In his remarks at the ceremony held at Africa House, Government House, Kano, Kwankwaso said the appointment of the new emir was based on his wealth of experience, commitment and by virtue of inheritance. Kwankwaso disclosed that the appointment of Sanusi Lamido as the new Kano emir was not on political grounds. According to him, Sanusi Lamido’s name was among those on an earlier list submitted to the kingmakers, contrary to accusations that his name was smuggled in by the Kano governor.

Kwankwaso stated that all the six contenders for the throne were good friends of his and they all deserved to succeed the late Emir Bayero, but one had to emerge. Kwankwaso requested that the new Kano emir treat the late Bayero’s family with humility, respect and take them as his own. The Kano State government had built houses at Sharada Quarters in Kano for the family members of the late Bayero, saying that the state government would embark on the renovation of the Emirate House. According to Kwankwaso, the keys to the houses would be submitted to Alhaji Mahe Bashir (Walin Kano) for onward issuance to the widows of the late emir. In his remarks shortly after he was awarded the letter of appointment, His Highness, the emir of Kano, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, CON, gave thanks to Allah who made him the 57th emir of Kano and the successor of the late Bayero. The emir of Kano called on the people of Kano to be calm and peaceful and to shun all forms of violence. The emir said that he was not chosen because he was the best among the contenders, but that it was by the will of Allah that he was made the emir of Kano. Sanusi Lamido said, “I am so close to late Emir Bayero than to my father. My first wife that I am with for the last 20 years was the daughter of late Bayero. I grew up under his care and share bed with the Turakin Kano, Nasiru Ado Bayero for ten years.” According to him there was no rift whatsoever in the royal family, neither among the royal sons and daughters. The new emir urged the people of Kano to support him and do whatever was necessary to avoid bad deeds. He assured the people that peace would continue to reign in the state and called on the people of Kano not to allow outsiders use them to destroy their home state. Shortly after the new

emir received the letter of appointment, the royal fathers present bowed before the emir to indicate their acceptance and respect. APC accuses PDP of inciting violence in Kano The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the PDP of inciting the violence that followed the announcement of the new emir of Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi on Sunday, in an apparent attempt to destabilise the state and urged the Kano State attorney-general to prosecute all PDP officials involved in the act. In a statement issued in Lagos on Monday by its interim national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the statement issued by PDP’s publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh congratulating one of the contenders long before the Kano State government announced the new emir was premeditated and calibrated to incite violence. It wondered why a ruling party that had access to Kano or any other state government, would rush to the media to congratulate a contender who had not been selected, without contacting the selecting authority to ensure the veracity of whatever news it may have heard. Kano protest: We were misled – PDP The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday ‎stated that it made an innocent mistake by congratulating Alhaji Lamido Ado Bayero as the new emir of Kano. The PDP, in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Chief Oliseh Metuh, was reacting to a statement by his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart, Lai Mohammed, who called for the arrest of the PDP spokesman for inciting unrest, following their congratulatory statement. The PDP however said it was shocked by the APC statement. “It is public knowledge that we made an innocent mistake but immediately withdrew it and tendered an unreserved apology well before the official announcement of the new emir was made.” Protest erupts again after Sanusi turbaned as emir of Kano Meanwhile, hundreds of youths protested yesterday in Kano against the appointment of former governor of the CBN Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the emir of Kano.
