Meet Mary-Ellen, LNG Canada’s Community Liaison Officer in Kitimat Mary-Ellen Proctor
Welcome Welcome to InFocus, LNG Canada’s newsletter designed especially for you and your community. In this and future issues, we’ll share the latest information about the proposed LNG Canada project. This includes information about the proposed project such as timelines, community events, consultation activities, andannouncements. Your feedback is important to us and as the proposed project progresses, it will help to inform our project planning process. If you have feedback on this newsletter or ideas for stories, please let us know. We look forward to hearing from you!
When I first joined Shell and the proposed LNG Canada project in 2013, I was excited to be chosen to serve as the Community Liaison Officer for Kitimat. This is my home and it’s important to me that everyone throughout the community has an opportunity to learn about LNG Canada, ask questions and voice concerns.

It’s a role I’ve played throughout my twentyyear career in developing community-level social services programs. It was something I did as the Health Director working with First Nations and other north coast communities, and while serving as the Executive Director for the Fort McMurray Family Crisis Society. The reason I’m proud to represent the proposed LNG Canada project here in Kitimat is that I can help make a difference in our community, as well as to share the benefits and potential impacts this proposed project will bring. It’s a unique opportunity, as well as a challenge, but I’m confident it will result in a mutually-beneficial relationship for all involved – community members, First Nations, small business – and local municipalities.

Shell, PetroChina, KOGAS and Mitsubishi are proposing to build and operate LNG Canada – a liquefied natural gas export facility in Kitimat, B.C.
The proposed LNG Canada project is undergoing a thorough environmental assessment (EA), which includes consultation with First Nations and the public. LNG Canada recently participated in a 30-day public comment period which included open houses hosted by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO). The purpose of the comment period was to seek input on LNG Canada’s draft Application Information Requirements (AIR), a document that describes the studies, methods, and information that will be required in our future Application for an Environmental Assessment Certificate. More than 108 community members attended the open houses on November 27 and 28, 2013, in Kitimat and Terrace. They provided an important opportunity to hear directly from community members about the issues most important to them. Among those that emerged as key interests included
housing, jobs and training, the environment, project design, as well as opportunities to learn more about the LNG industry. Additionally, 41 comments were submitted to the EAO during the public comment period. LNG Canada is appreciative of those who took time to participate in the public comment period and share their input. This input will be considered as LNG Canada works with the EAO to finalize the AIR. Based on the final AIR, we will complete our studies and assess the environmental, social and economic aspects of the proposed project in support of developing our Environmental Assessment Certificate application.
