FRIDAY NIGHT FUN

First, Second, Third, and Fourth Fridays are special around Lancaster

Lancaster County is many things. Of course, it’s the home of the Amish, a place where you can see horse-drawn buggies rolling through bucolic farmland. But the county also contains a bustling city, with quirky shops, galleries, nightclubs and nationally renowned restaurants. Lancaster was once known as the “Munich of America” and has recently seen that brewing heritage revived in the thriving craft beer scene. And shoppers have plenty to do here. whether they’re interested in outlet malls or antiques dealers. For families or foodies; craft beer fans or history buffs; shoppers or music lovers, Lancaster County is a great place to visit. Thanks for joining us!

While Lancaster is best known for Pennsylvania Dutch specialties like pork and sauerkraut, scrapple, chicken pot pie and fasnachts, we also have a small but vibrant taco scene. Are Lancaster tacos as authentic as what you’ll fi nd closer to the Mexican border? Maybe not, but find offer great food at reasonable prices and that doesn’t matter. These family-friendly restaurants offer are worth a visit when you’re in town.

SUMMER/FALL 2022

Tacos in the city Cocina Mexicana

115 N. Prince St., Lancaster THE FOOD Cocina Mexicana was Lancaster’s fi first rst Mexican restaurant. Service is helpful and the setting cannot be beat. Reliably fresh and tasty, the standard tacos are all worth ordering: al pastor, carne enchilada, carne asada, pollo, carnitas, chorizo and lengua. For something a little diff different, erent, try their arabes tacos; strips of grilled pork with an unusual sour chipotle sauce and sauteed onions, these are tangy and just a bit spicy. Their Their fi fish sh and shrimp tacos are on point with pristine seafood and crispy slaw. The The menu includes a full range of tortas, enchiladas, burritos, platters and, of course, guacamole and salsas. Do not miss dessert! Their Their flan, flan, when they have it, is the best in the county. PLAN YOUR VISIT The restaurant is in a cluster of artsy businesses ringing a The hipster outdoor patio. For an adult-oriented summer day in the city, spend the afternoon visiting the art galleries along gallery row on Prince Street and the shops in the 300 block of Queen Street. Stop into Cocina Mexicana for an early taco dinner, then trot next door to see a movie or show at Zoetropolis, an arthouse theater and restaurant/bar. After your movie, saunter over to Columbia Kettleworks’ 2nd Gear Taproom and sip a freshly brewed kirsche weisse on the patio. Not ready to go home yet? Wander back to Zoetropolis’s bar for a cocktail made with charcoal-infused grey vodka, among other locally distilled spirits.

Tacos in Lititz

Chilangos Mexican Restaurant 56 N. Broad St., Lititz

THE FOOD Chilangos’ staff are welcoming and while the restaurant is often crowded with customers, the team works quickly. Classic Mexican tacos are served in a bright, lively dining room in the back. Chilangos has excellent carne asada, chorizo, lengue and al pastor tacos. In an uncommon twist, their chicken tacos use grilled chicken (not roasted) for an exceptionally juicy and savory result. Chilangos also off offers ers birria tacos. Birria is beef that is slow-cooked until it is meltingly tender then piled on a soft corn taco shell with cheese and quickly pressed on a hot griddle. Cilantro, lime and onions are served on the side and add brightness and texture when sprinkled into the warm birria taco. Th Thee menu also has guacamole, homemade salsas, tortas, nachos, tamales, burritos, quesadillas and fajitas. PLAN YOUR VISIT Have a family day in Lititz by taking the kids to Lititz Springs Park to feed the ducks and play on the playgrounds. Grab a tasty taco lunch at Chilangos, then walk around town to check out the shops: Aaron’s Books, Wilbur Chocolate and Outback Toys are perfect for the kids. At Julius Sturgis Preztel Bakery, take an historic tour and roll your own soft pretzels. Grab an ice cream cone along Main Street and go home tired and happy.

Tacos in the western ‘burbs

Tequila Mexican Grill Bakery and Store

805 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster

THE FOOD Tequilas is a small restaurant with a shop stocked with a brightly colored Mexican items like purses, shoes, jewelry, and decor. Staff is friendly and happy to explain any menu items. The taco portions are generous – my three barbacoa tacos were so stuffed with tender beef, cheese, cilantro and onions that I could only finish two. The barbacoa was served with a beef consume dipping sauce sprinkled with cilantro and minced onion, and so tasty I finished as if it were soup. The al pastor tacos had the expected pineapple but were delightfully spiced up with a bit of added chorizo. Carnitas were also a winner, with slow-cooked pork. Tequilas also offers seared fresh tuna tacos, a Tex-Mex option that was also generous in portion but much lighter. The rest of the menu contains all the standbys, from guacamole to nachos, burritos, enchiladas, tortas, and platters. PLAN YOUR VISIT There is nothing to plan; you come to Tequila’s for the food, not for any nearby adventures. The restaurant is in a nondescript building along Rohrerstown Road, a busy suburban thoroughfare. Tequila’s is within easy driving distance of downtown Lancaster, Penn Medicine Lancaster and Park City Center mall but Tequila’s is worth a visit, no matter where in Lancaster County you’re coming from.

BY VICTORIA BOTSWICK

Warm weather is upon us and there is nothing better than ending the day with an ice-cold glass of …. cider or mead? Across Lancaster County cider and mead options seem to be popping up everywhere. Here are three of the hottest spots to cool down with one of these refreshing beverages.

VISIT LANCASTER

SUMMER/FALL 2022

Artifice Ales & Mead 55 N MAIN ST, MANHEIM

Artifice Ales & Mead offers a unique drink for those with an adventurous palette: mead. Mead is made with fermented honey and tastes similar to a lightly sweet wine. As a beer enthusiast, I was hesitant to order an entire glass of mead. Fortunately, Artifice offers four-glass flights so that you can mix and match small pours of both mead and beer. I was pleasantly surprised by Artifice’s peach mead that tasted like a fruity ray of sunshine. Artifice’s food was equally enjoyable, my favorite being the maple roasted brussels sprouts which were caramelized and crispy. My dining partner described these sprouts as “the only way I would eat them!” Artifice offers a comfortable environment for an evening out or a relaxed afternoon with friends. Artifice is owned and operated by the same team that runs Meduseld Meadery in Lancaster, where you can drink mead, throw axes, and enjoy the occasional sight of a man in a kilt.

Wyndridge Farm Tasting Room 398 HARRISBURG AVE, LANCASTER

Wyndridge Farm Tasting Room offers locally made beer and cider on the northern edge of Lancaster city. This is Wyndridge’s second outpost; their original restaurant and brewery/cidery is in Dallastown. Wyndridge’s Lancaster location provides an array of ciders and beer on tap, but the widest assortment is found in their canned cider. Wyndridge has a seasonal selection of summer ciders including mojito and my personal favorite, pineapple mango cider. Their flatbreads were just right for pairing with cider, especially the hot pepperoni flat bread topped with ricotta and hot honey drizzle. Worth noting is that Wyndridge Farm Tasting Room is a half-block north of the Warehouse District Beer Garden at 555 N. Charlotte St. After enjoying ciders at Wyndridge, stroll down to the Beer Garden for additional libations, a game of cornhole, food trucks, and live entertainment.

The Fridge

534 N MULBERRY ST, LANCASTER

Located on Mulberry Street near both Wyndridge and the Beer Garden, The Fridge is a hangout for those who appreciate excellent craft beer. The Fridge’s wide selection of craft ciders includes Levengood’s, a crisp local staple. What I love about The Fridge is that you can sample hand crafted drinks from across the county and across the globe without leaving the building. If you see something you want to try later, you can buy a mixed six-pack to take home. I particularly enjoyed a Salt and Sand margarita cider made by the inventive Graft cidery in the Hudson Valley. Graft has been a driver of cider innovation in the U.S., launching flavors such as rhubarb spritz, Moscow mule, salt gose, sake plum, kombucha, and many more. Some of their ciders are in cans printed with a fantasy story series that you can enjoy while you sip. And the artwork on Graft cans is a whimsical window into a world of nomads, tiger-sharks, and castaways. These ciders are worth seeking out and The Fridge is where to find them. With your cider, enjoy The Fridge’s thin-crust pizza topped with mushrooms, kale and gruyere. Or, try the Bat Out of Hell all-natural hot dog with bacon, arugula, tomato, and spicy hell aioli. Hell yeah! SUMMER/FALL 2022

VISIT LANCASTER

SUMMER/FALL 2022

Small towns across Lancaster County love Friday nights. And who can blame them? After a long work week, there is nothing more enjoyable than hitting up your favorite small town’s unique businesses and events. Here are all the towns celebrating Fridays in Lancaster County.

Second Friday

Third Friday

As one of the Coolest Small Towns in America, historic Lititz celebrates the second Friday of each month with downtown shops and eateries staying open extended hours. Many businesses offer live entertainment, refreshments, giveaways, special sales, and more. Spend the evening hours watching the sidewalks come to life and linger through the streets enjoying the opportunity to browse stores and boutiques as the summer sun sets.

During the months of May through September, Downtown Lancaster City comes alive with the sound of music on the third Friday of the month between 5 pm and 8 pm. Music Friday is hosted by the City of Lancaster and Music for Everyone. You can visit many of the city’s retailers, restaurants, and other various outdoor spaces to catch live music acts performing. You can also catch free concerts at Binn’s Park during the summer months at the 100 block of North Queen Street. If you love music, check out the monthly schedule for Music Friday at https://lanc.news/fridays to find where your favorite types of music will be played. Enjoy time seeing what the city has to offer alongside the sounds of some amazing local musicians.

LITITZ; SHOPS AND EATERIES OPEN UNTIL ABOUT 9 PM

ELIZABETHTOWN; 4 PM – 7 PM

First Friday

DOWNTOWN LANCASTER CITY; 5 PM – 9 PM

Downtown Lancaster City’s First Friday is a must if you are a fan of arts and culture. The city is home to so many great art galleries and studios that stay open later for the festivities. You will find many of the city’s boutiques and retailers are also open late, as well as museums such as The Demuth Museum. Many of them offering special entertainment for the evening. There is also plenty of great food venues to grab a bite to eat for dinner while you stroll the city. While Downtown Lancaster’s First Friday is geared more towards adults, the Lancaster Science Factory does offer free admission to 70+ interactive exhibits, which is great for kids and adults alike. SUMMER/FALL 2022

I am a native of Elizabethtown and in recent years it has really gone through a “glow-up.” Within walking distance of the town square you will find so many small businesses selling consignment and new clothing, gifts, toys, candy, home goods, and so much more. There are also many fabulous restaurants – including a brewery – to grab a bite to eat. Every second Friday of the month, nearly all the stores in town open their doors to participate in the monthly themed event and scavenger hunt. It is truly a family-friendly and kid-friendly event. The scavenger hunt takes you through the town’s cute collection of shops where you collect clues or answer trivia questions. Once complete, you hand in your form at The Candy Unicornium for the chance to win the grand prize. Second Fridays also include other fun things for kids to do, like face-painting or characters related to the theme of the event. We visited during the Alice in Wonderland theme and got to meet the Queen of Hearts and check out the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Table, as well as the square’s flowerbeds decorated with special flowers with faces from the film. You may even get to grab some delicious chocolates and other candy from Mars Incorporated, which participates in community events. Elizabethtown’s Second Friday celebrations are amazing for kids, but also great for adults who want to be able to browse stores while their children look around for clues and trivia questions. It is a win-win for the whole family.

MUSIC FRIDAY IN DOWNTOWN LANCASTER CITY; 5 PM – 8 PM

Fourth Friday

MOUNT JOY; 5 PM – 8 PM

Mount Joy is a cute, small town with its fair share of shops, bakeries, and restaurants on Main Street. Like many other Friday events, these businesses stay open later and offer special sales during the event. Each month has a different theme, but still gives the opportunity for visitors to explore all Mount Joy has to offer in the later evening hours.

COLUMBIA; 5 PM - 8PM

Mount Gretna BY MAGGIE NOON | PHOTOS BY VINNY TENNIS

Mount Gretna is one of my favorite small town destinations in the summer. The large old trees and quaint cottage houses make it feel like a whimsical forest escape. It feels like a grown-up summer camp and has a magical ability to make you forget any worries and truly relax. Here are some of my favorite places to visit when I’m there:

Jigger Shop

202 GETTYSBURG AVENUE, MOUNT GRETNA JIGGERSHOP.COM

Mt. Gretna Hideaway

40 BOULEVARD STREET, MOUNT GRETNA MTGRETNAHIDEAWAY.COM

The Mt. Gretna Hideaway is a restaurant and bar with a large patio for outdoor seating. The outside atmosphere at the Hideaway is more relaxed, like a family friendly sports bar, while the dining room inside is more upscale. They have everything on the menu from wings to filet mignon so there will be something that everyone will love. I personally recommend the Mount Gretna Lake Water cocktail and their blackened Cajun chicken pasta. The restaurant and bar also hosts events and live music throughout the year, which could be an added bonus to your visit

The Jigger Shop is open daily from Memorial Day until mid-September. I love the old-fashioned soda shop vibe and hanging out with friends on the covered porch. While the shop does offer food, it’s really known for ice cream. I’m an avid ice cream lover, so I can’t pick just one favorite sundae, but the signature Jigger is their specialty. The Jigger is two and a half scoops of French vanilla ice cream, with either chocolate or butterscotch (my choice) topping, whipped marshmallow, and Jigger nuts. If you get nothing else, this sweet treat will hit the spot.

Mt. Gretna Lake & Beach

130 LAKEVIEW DRIVE, LEBANON MTGRETNALAKE.COM

Mt. Gretna Lake is like having a local beach getaway but much closer to home. It’s open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend and is super family friendly with lots of activities. There are diving boards, a volleyball court, picnic areas, and a snack bar. You can also rent inner tubes, canoes, and beach chairs for the day. Right now, the lake is limiting capacity so all daily admission tickets must be pre-purchased online.

Mt. Gretna Outdoor Art Show & Summer Craft Show

101 CHAUTAUQUA DRIVE, MOUNT GRETNA MTGRETNAARTS.COM & MTGRETNASHOWS.COM

The Mt. Gretna Art Show & Summer Craft Show are technically two separate events, but they happen simultaneously and are just a short walk apart during the third weekend of August. The Art Show is a juried show, meaning that you must be selected to display your work there. The show takes place in the main area of the small town under shade from hundred-year-old trees. In addition to seeing art of every variety from over 150 artisans, there is a gourmet food court and live entertainment. Just down the road, close to where you’ll park for both events, is the Summer Craft Show. At this event you’ll find any and everything, from handmade doll clothes to metal sculptures and paintings to pottery, there is certainly something for everyone. SUMMER/FALL 2022

Unlike pedestrian crosswalks in urban areas, vehicles have the right-of-way at trail crossings and are not required to stop for you. Be safe! Wait to cross roadways until there is no traffic and you can do so safely.
