Insider’s Guide to Retail Shopping STORY AND PHOTOS BY LINDSEY MCCALLUM I have a list of boutiques that I turn to when I am in need of a little retail therapy. It might be because I need something new for a special event, a night out, or a unique gift item. Sometimes I just want to treat myself, but I always want to support local business owners.

Fashion & Accessory Stops in Lititz Atlas General Store 46 E Main St, Lititz atlasgeneralstore.com

This shop has cute and affordable jewelry options that are on-trend but in a classic way that is easy to wear. My personal favorite right now is the selection of Rifle Paper Company hair accessories. They dial up any outfit and the headbands can be worn all day without discomfort. There is something for everyone here so make this a stop if you are doing any gift shopping. In addition to the variety of accessory options they also have home décor, kitchen and bar goodies, stationary, puzzles, beauty, the list goes on!

Heavenly Soaps & Scents

33 E Main St, Lititz heavenlysoapsandscents.com

Of course, they have gorgeous soaps and candles but the back half of the store has a surprisingly cute selection of clothing and toys for babies and toddlers.

The shop offers the latest trends and also classics that never go out of style, all without breaking the bank. Boutique1780 is size inclusive, and also has shoes!

Unique Styles in Downtown Lancaster 334 N. Queen St, Lancaster telltaledress.com

This is like a dress treasure hunt, look for vintage beauties that you can’t find anywhere else. Shopping here reminds me of a vintage Anthropologie because you can find some true gems in this little shop. 45 N. Market St, Lancaster ellicott.co

BellaBoo

32 N. Queen St, Lancaster bellabooonline.com

For babies and kids, this is the spot. This shop has the cutest kids’ clothing, pjs and shoes, always the best brands that you may not have heard of. BellaBoo’s items are comfy and durable, plus, they have the best selection of toys, games, and puzzles.

Three Little Birds Boutique 1200 Gilbert Way, Ste D11, Lancaster tlbboutique.com

This is really my go to for all occasions: date night, important work meeting, lunch with friends, etc. You’ll find familiar brands like Free People, Z Supply, Marine Layer, and Steve Madden, but also will be introduced to new brands every visit. I found my favorite pair of work pants (professional and comfortable, I’ll take all the colors please!), and my new favorite jeans (thanks to a denim event they hosted with Liverpool), and most exciting is their own brand JoFlower. JoFlower clothes are designed and made by the owner with gorgeous floral patterns and luxurious fabrics. My favorite top is a JoFlower that I’ve worn to work events, charity dinners, and casually with jeans. I cannot say enough about this place, including that there is an area for little ones to sit and read or color so they stay happy while you browse. They have a new custom line launching at the end of the year, called Strait Laced. I saw a sneak peek they shared on social media last summer and I already have the wide leg, paper bag waist trousers on my wish list!

JUST BE-TWEEN US

Fun Spots in Lancaster for Tween Kids STORY AND PHOTOS BY HOPE BROCIOUS My daughters and nieces are ages 7 to 12 and already they are picky about activities because they are suddenly just too cool for most things. Many activities in Lancaster County are geared either towards little kids or much older teens, making it hard to find fun things to do with tweens. I took my daughters and nieces on a tween activity exploration and here are the places we all loved the best.

Decades Lancaster

438 N Queen St, Lancaster decadeslancaster.com At Decades Lancaster, you are in for a boutique bowling alley experience with a retro flair! Decades Lancaster is located within the historic 15,000-square foot Stahr Armory. The bowling area features six lanes with lovely chandeliers overhead. My kids got a kick out of the bowling pins on strings, or string pinsetters. They also thought it was cool that the ball traveled between the lanes up the shoot to the ball return instead of underneath the floor. Decades has large couches for relaxing between your turns, and a wooden table between lanes for food and drinks. My kids were living their best life with the full-service food and drinks to the lanes while we bowled. And the food was great! I recommend the Decades burger but make sure you upgrade to the truffle fries…they were outstanding. The fried soft pretzel bites with cheese sauce and agave mustard were also delicious to snack on while we bowled. Not a bowler? You don’t have to bowl to order food. They have a large bar in the arcade area and a seating area if you want to dine restaurant-style. Decades has a huge selection of retro arcade games. My kids were a bit taken aback by the image quality of the games but had a fun time trying the classics, especially Pacman. Pro tip: Decades Lancaster is 21+ after 8:30PM. If you plan a visit, I suggest reserving a lane or getting there earlier, closer to the time they open. It is possible that you may have to wait for a lane, but that will give you time to explore the arcade.

Rocky Springs Entertainment Center

1495 Millport Road, Lancaster | rockysprings.net Rocky Springs Entertainment Center sits on the grounds of the former Rocky Springs Amusement Park. While the park has long since closed, Rocky Springs Entertainment Center occupies the former site. They have bowling, laser tag, an arcade, and the best little restaurant all in one building. Our trip there started off with bowling. Each lane has spacious and comfortable seating for large groups, so if you are bowling next to someone else, you don’t feel like you are on top of them. They also start glow bowling at 4:30PM so we got the full experience without having to be out until midnight. They have large screens with music videos playing and along the top of each lane, they have vintage photographs of the old amusement park. Laser tag was also super fun, but this is only offered Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We had an odd number playing, so instead of splitting into two teams, it was every woman for themselves. A true reminder of how competitive my kids really are! The inside of the arena is amusement park-themed to pay homage to Rocky Springs’ history. You can dodge shots from your opponents between Penny Land, a carousel, and other attractions you would find at an amusement park. The playing field gives off that abandoned park feel, but without being too scary. Outside of the laser tag arena is a decent sized arcade. My kids were set loose with $10 on their game cards and had a blast running from machine to machine to rack up tickets to cash in for prizes. Attached to the bowling alley is Red Pin Bar & Grill. I was

impressed with the modern, industrial look of the space that opened out onto a large patio. Given that we are at a bowling alley I was surprised when the waiter said their signature dish was their crab cakes. But, for the sake of research, I indulged in the Lump Crab Cake Sandwich. It was delicious and was easily one of the best, if not the best, crab cake I have ever eaten. They also have a good selection of gourmet burgers, salads, pizzas, and more. My kids ordered the traditional fare off the kid’s menu. Usually, they only ever finish about half of their food, but they devoured every bite of their meals along with the pretzel bite appetizers served on a wooden board made to look like pins set up in a lane. The desserts are also to die for. They had a seasonal Apple Butter Cake that I tried, and the apple butter was made fresh there as well. There is also a bar with plenty of beer and mixed drinks. My favorite? Rumspringa…appropriate for Lancaster County’s Amish roots. We spent about four hours at Rocky Springs Entertainment Center, but honestly, we could have stayed even longer. The kids had such a great time! Pro tip: Plan a visit during the weekend to do all the attractions. During weekdays, there are bowling leagues some nights, so it may be a bit difficult to secure a lane. cont’d

Local Picks HOME AWAY FROM HOME HOLIDAY COOKIES BY MAGGIE NOON | ILLUSTRATIONS BY BAILEY WATRO

One of my favorite holiday traditions is baking with my family to make the perfect holiday cookie tray. However, if you’re visiting you probably didn’t bring your oven, so I’m taking you around Lancaster County to assemble your very own holiday cookie tray with what I think would be amazing top-notch selections.

S. Clyde Weaver sclydeweaver.com

East Petersburg - 5253 Main Street, East Petersburg Manheim Township - 1509 Lititz Pike, Lancaster Farmer’s Market Stands in Lancaster County, including Bird-in-Hand Farmer’s Market, Central Market, Lancaster County Farmer’s Market, Root’s Country Market

Sand tarts are a key component to the holiday cookie tray for anyone local to PA Dutch country. These paper-thin treats are so light that you can eat quite a few without regret, which is good because their mouth-watering flavor will leave you wanting more! Sand tarts are not, in fact, as dry as sand as the name might lead you to believe. They are crisp with a sugared sweet top and a buttery finish. S. Clyde Weaver has the best sand tarts around so make sure to stop in for a batch of theirs.

My favorite type of cookies to make for the holidays are iced sugar cookies. At Zig’s, you can find these year-round. The cookie portion of these is fluffy and almost cake-like. They are chewy, moist, and topped with the perfect amount of not-too-sweet buttercream icing. Decorated with seasonal sprinkles, these cookies will take you right back to your childhood. While you’re at Zig’s, be sure to grab their Russian tea cookies. They look like little snowballs which is perfect for your holiday cookie tray. These bite-sized treats are coated in powdered sugar and taste like pure butter. They have a touch of crunch from chopped nuts but are mostly soft, quickly melting in your mouth.

Manheim Township - 1573 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, Intercourse - 23 Center St, Intercourse, Hershey - 121 Towne Square Dr, Hershey

Taylor Chip is a favorite local cookie store that offers seasonal flavors in addition to their everyday treats. Last year their seasonal offerings included peppermint mocha, gingersnap, maple pecan, apple pie, and toasted coconut. Seasonal flavors aside, their snickerdoodle cookie tastes like the holidays regardless of the time of year. It is cinnamon forward with a nice crumble. Like all of Taylor Chip’s cookies, it has an ooey gooey center with slightly crispier edges. My all-time favorite cookie of theirs is the salted caramel pretzel. The cookie’s buttery brown sugar flavor melts in your mouth and is topped with a not-too-sweet caramel drizzle and thick pretzel pieces for an extra crunch that hits the spot.

Conway Social Club

STORY AND PHOTOS BY SALLY REYNOLDS Mention speakeasies and you’ll conjure up old films where thirsty guests knock on secret doors. A small panel opens in the door and two eyes peer out and the visitor must say the password. That speakeasy vibe can be found in several places in Lancaster. These bars don’t have bright signs and shining windows, they are up a flight of stairs, in a cellar, or behind a nondescript door. But step inside and each one offers a fun take on Lancaster County’s impressive cocktail scene.

Conway Social Club

28 E. King St., Lancaster conwaysocialclub.com To find Conway Social go to Annie Bailey’s Irish Pub and look to the right for a black, unmarked door. Knock on the door knocker and wait a moment for the host to bring you upstairs to the dark and clubby interior. The main attraction here is a list of impeccably inventive cocktails organized in menu chapters such as The Garden, The Meadow, and The Library. Conway Social is probably the most adventurous cocktail bar in the city and rivals anything you’d find in New York or Philly. A recent favorite was Dill on the Garry: Hendricks gin, aquavit, fennel, dill, Solerno blood orange liqueur, cucumber, and merengue. The result is pale opaque green, richly herbaceous and refreshing. The food choices are excellent too.

Thistle Finch Burley Bar

417 W. Grant St., Lancaster | thistlefinch.com Drive down an unprepossessing side street and find the bland metal door across from a skate shop to enter Thistle Finch’s Burley Bar. The cocktails here are fewer in number than Conway Social and more traditional. I had the Beekeeper (yes, gin again): Market Alley Barrel-Rested Gin, chamomile honey, lemon, and celery bitters. It was tart and a little sweet, light, and restorative. The food menu is simple, featuring burgers, handhelds, salads, and snacks. If they are offering the Cuban sandwich when you go, get it. It’s the best Cuban I’ve had in Lancaster, with rich ham and pork beautifully balanced by snappy pickle and mustard, pressed on a fresh roll.

Tellus 360

24 E. King St., Lancaster | tellus360.com Tellus itself is hard to miss. It’s a dominant building on East King Street and on weekend evenings there is likely to be a line to get inside. Tellus is huge with rooms on three floors and a rooftop, but you are heading to the basement. Walk past the bathrooms to the end of the nondescript concrete corridor and enter the wooden door on your left. Inside is a cozy space with a wall of old vinyl albums. There are party lights, a dart board, board games, wooden tables, booths, and a small bar. The scene here is like a party in a friend’s living room, if you have really hip friends. The cocktails are standard, and the food is casual fare from several vendors. I had a gin and tonic and it was fine, but you’re not here for fancy cocktails, you came in search of a speakeasy vibe and a fun time, and you’ve found it.

Proof

30 N. Queen St., Lancaster prooflancaster.com Walk slowly along Queen Street and keep your eyes out for the small “Proof ” sign above a metal staircase descending below street level. Take the stairs down and enter a space that combines sleek modern furnishings with rustic stone walls. The cocktails at Proof are less extensive than at Conway Social but similarly intriguing. Since I am a dedicated gin fan, I ordered the South Frog: tomato and basil infused Bluecoat gin, house-made parmesan vermouth, and long hot pepper olive oil, which made a spicy, savory, and herby sipper, with hints of pizza flavor. The food here is outstanding, making Proof a worthwhile destination even if you aren’t a cocktail drinker.
