Lancaster County is chock full of farms. This means that farm-to-table restaurants are plentiful, many of them are clustered in Lancaster City.

There is no set definition of a farm-to-table restaurant, but I think of them as restaurants that highlight local farm suppliers on their menu, or that use truly seasonal items in their cooking. I don’t want to see strawberries on menus until they available at farm stands, usually in May, and “no thanks” to asparagus in December.

The restaurants listed all strive to use local produce and meats and vary their menus according to the season. This list is not comprehensive, it’s simply a list of my favorites. There a plenty of opportunities throughout the county to find others to add to your own list of favorites!

rse Inn has been in operation since 1935, with several changes of over the decades.
The restaurant is on the second floor of an unprepossessing building just east of downtown Lancaster in an urban residential area. Owners Matt and Russell have kept the slightly disheveled charm of the original 1930’s with décor that includes old beer trays, horsey bric-a-brac, and stalls used as dining booths.
Tenderloin tips on toast with a red wine demi-glace is a longstanding favorite, as are the burgers, but the rest of the menu changes frequently to use the season’s best produce.

Summertime appetizers might include flash-fried kalettes with a spicy chili sauce, or burrata with roasted local beets. There is always one fish entrée available, sustainably sourced, prepared in the summer with a beurre blanc, sweet corn and tiny patty pan squash from Groff’s farm. Cocktails are inventive and also change often to make use of seasonal fruits and herbs.

If it’s on the menu, don’t miss the appetizer crepe cake, which changes seasonally and has lately been made with zucchini and Lindendale Farms’ goat ricotta. Cocktails feature house-made syrups and infusions, like the Lust for Gold: Darjeeling gin, golden cashew orgeat, mango acid, saffron, cardamom, banana rum blend, all clarified with Lindendale’s goat yogurt. It’s complex yet perfectly balanced, with a brilliant bit of gold leaf in the presentation.
