Optimism

abounds T

he month of May is like a good starter in a restaurant as it sets the tone for what’s ahead this summer.

Our sometimes dreary world comes alive with colour, neighbours chat over the garden fence, kids come out of console hibernation and play in the streets, the barbecue is fired up and that summer holiday gets closer and closer. Thankfully, this month marks the end of the election campaign. Is it me or do these things get more drawn out every time? Next time, can I suggest that we shut all the leaders in the jungle for the whole month with Ant and Dec, and vote them out one by one until we have a winner? Talking of politicians, I got a call from one the other day who complained of bias in one of our recent editions. So just to make it clear, we are an independent, privately owned company with no political ties. Our editorial standpoint is strictly neutral and in our humble view, there are some very good politicians out there of all hues, but sadly, not enough of them to make much of a difference most of the time. But hey ho, it’s May, so it’s time for optimism whoever gets in! See you next time

What our customers say We would recommend Borron Shaw to anyone looking to sell or purchase a property. The service has been 1st class and the team are a credit to the company, they cannot do enough for you to ensure a secured sale or purchase on a property in such a short period of time. Lisa Hampson – Up Holland

Whether buying or selling, what we look for in an estate agent is someone who acts more as a friend with expertise rather than a pushy salesperson, someone who is ready to impart their considerable local knowledge to ensure both buyer and seller get a fair deal. Over the last 5 years we have found Borron Shaw Orrell meet all our expectations. Jeff and Janet - Orrell

I contacted Borron Shaw to view a house and within six weeks I had moved in. During that time I was in the process of changing jobs so it was difficult to find the right mortgage. Have your say on homes This is how the old Abraham Guest School site could look like after plans for a major housing scheme there were unveiled.

Helena Partnerships has formally applied for planning permission to erect a building with a mixture of 2, 3 and 4 storeys with accomodation for 101 extra care apartments. They also want permission for 30 bungalows with associated access, car parking and landscaping. Helena have been granted a 125 year ground lease for the Orrell Road site, which the council says could have been sold off to private developers for around ÂŁ2m. Subject to permission being granted, council chiefs say construction will start before summer and be completed by the end of 2016. Papers lodged on behalf of the applicant cover a number of issues,

Heart fun day

planned

The number of deaths from heart disease in Wigan is falling - and a fun day planned for May is hoping to help drive down that figure even further. Health chiefs say that in 2003, there were 257 premature and preventable deaths related to coronary heart disease and strokes. By 2013 this number had reduced by about 50%. Smoking in Wigan has also been cut by a third. The Heart of Wigan campaign, launched in 2014, is helping to improve cardiovascular health in the

area. To continue the fight, Wigan Council’s public health team and the Heart of Wigan campaign are now encouraging healthier diets and better exercise routines. Professor Kate Ardern, said: “The Heart of Wigan campaign helps to ensure that fewer families in the borough experience the loss of a loved one at an early age. Our free Family fun day in Wigan Town Centre on Saturday, May 23, will further promote the benefits of good heart health and raise awareness through a range of fun activities.”

The jean

scene by Katie Wright

A

part from the odd designer who specialises in it, denim doesn’t tend to get much of a look-in on the catwalks, with high-end houses favouring textiles that command a higher price on the retail racks. But that all changed this season. Burberry led the charge, sending out about a dozen shrunken jean jackets. The Gucci show had a cowgirl inflection, mixing dark and light denim with brown leather, and even the usually uber-luxe Dolce & Gabbana showed faded ‘mom’ jeans, albeit encrusted with oodles of crystal). As such, you can get out your old vintage faves again, but for a much more modern take on the fabric - which originated in the French town of Nimes in 16th century (“de Nimes”, you see?) take your cue from Chloe, where a cooler, cleaner aesthetic reigned. It’s time to look beyond those well-worn skinnies and embrace spring’s fresh shapes, from the kick flare to the minimal tee. Mini or midi, buttoned down or zipped up, if you’re in the market for a denim skirt this season, it has to be A-line. A taut indigo mini is perfect for spring’s Seventies reboot. Pair it with a floaty gypsy top or tuck in a pussy bow blouse and finish with a sweet suede jacket. You’ll be wearing it all through summer too. A knee-length denim skirt offers more dress-up opportunities. Wear with a soft cream shirt and court heels if your office dress code allows, or add a boxy silk tee, gold cuff and strappy sandals for evening.

If you love the goes-with-everything versatility of a denim shirt, try a tee on for size. A faded round-neck T-shirt is the ideal accompaniment for leather, either tucked into a pencil or full skirt, or loose over black skinnies. Do the double by pairing a denim tee with jeans in a contrasting wash, then add pointed-toe heels and a studded or fringed clutch for an edgy after-dark look.

consultation event being held in May, Wigan Council say this isn’t the case. However, one is being planned and town hall bosses say once an event has been finalised, details will be circulated.

The route, which has been talked about on and off for many years, was finally granted £12.7m of government funding last year.

The proposed road was part of a council masterplan in 2008, in which it stated: “Establishing the link across the M6 between the M58, Wigan and Manchester will represent the missing rung in the ladder of east-west connections across the region. Missing east/west link between Wigan and the M6 Improving linkages to the M6 are crucial to the future economic growth of the Borough.”

If built, it’s likely the new scheme would start at the junction 26 roundabout and pass through the old Pemberton Colliery site and Poolstock to the new Westwood Park site. Although there has been talk locally of a

Orrell pupil admissions Orrell primary pupils who want to go to Shevington High School may find it easier to secure a place in future. Education bosses are recommending that specific mention is made to children living in Orrell in the school’s admissions criteria. A report due to be debated by councillors as Local Life went to press states that where Shevington High receives more applications than places, a fivepoint criteria will be followed. These cover include looked-after and previously

looked-after children, pupils who have older siblings there, children living in Shevington followed by children living in Standish Lower Ground, Appley Bridge and Orrell and finally children living nearest to the school. Interim education chief James Winterbottom said in the report: “The school receives around 20% of first preferences from pupils attending primary schools in Orrell and Standish Lower Ground. The online admissions application process for all schools in Wigan begins in September with the closing date set for October 31.

Learners in the

swim!

Four learners at a Pemberton training provider have been on the trip of a lifetime - swapping their studying for two weeks’ training in Malta. Sarah Gartland, Rebecca Whitling, Derek Pitcher and Liam Ashcroft travelled to Malta to experience working in a different country. They are all animal care learners at ProCo, based on Montrose Avenue. During the two weeks, learners completed a work placement at a cat sanctuary, where they feed, cleaned and groomed the cats as well as had the responsibility of completing health checks and rehoming the cats. Nina Daly, animal care tutor who travelled to Malta with the learners, said: “It was interesting for the learners to experience working in a cat sanctuary abroad with other young people from different countries. “Not only did this help the learners develop their animal welfare skills, it also helped their communication and team building skills, which will help strengthen their future job prospects.” The excursion is part of partnership work between ProCo and Everything is Possible, a non-for-

More international projects have been planned for ProCo’s learners. Viennese

whirl

by David Sudworth

Escaping to the city of Schubert, Schnitzel and Sekt has just got a great deal easier.

T

hanks to Billinge based Marken Travel and Jet2holidays great value city breaks direct to Vienna are now available from Manchester for local people.

The capital of Austria is known for its history, from the Gothic St Stephen’s Cathedral to the art nouveau splendour of the Secession. By day, you can enjoy a walk around the Ringstrasse, the circular road that will take you past many of Vienna’s attractions. St Stephen’s 343 steps seem daunting at first, but reach the summit and you will be rewarded with spectacular views. You could also follow in the footsteps of Orson Welles, who starred in the film The Third Man, and take a ride in one of the ornate gondola carriages of the giant Ferris wheel at the Prater, another of the city’s most famous landmarks. But don’t be fooled into thinking there aren’t other attractions to enjoy. It’s truly an historic old town filled with a vibrant modern atmosphere. To enjoy this, head to head into the ‘Inner Stadt’, the historic old town. And treat yourself to an einspanner, Viennese coffee topped with cream, and a slice of sachertorte, chocolate cake with apricot jam, at the iconic Cafe Central.

Sofa so

A

good By Jeananne Craig

t the end of a busy day, the sofa can seem an inviting place. While some are merely practical, sofas are all about comfort and relaxation. Don’t forget about your posture, though.

We all know that sitting up straight is important when we’re sitting at a desk - and sofas are no different. So show your spine some settee TLC, with these simple tips:

Don’t Slump If you slouch, or slightly hunch over, you’re likely to be piling pressure on your lower back as it has to cope with the weight of your upper body. You’ll need to strengthen your core and buttock muscles, so have a look at NHS Choices at www.nhs.uk/ Livewell/Backpain/Pages/back-pain-and-common-posture-mistakes.aspx

Support Your Lower Back If there’s a big gap between your lower back and the chair you’re sitting on, you may need to make some adjustments. This is something you should also keep an eye on if your job is desk-bound on. Try and make sure your knees are level with your hips by adjusting your seat, or find yourself a foot rest.

Feet On The Floor It’s highly tempting to cross your legs nonchalantly, like that posh couple on Gogglebox, when you’re watching TV (particularly if you have a glass of G&T in your hand). But this can put pressure on your lower back over time. So try and keep your feet on the floor and resist the urge to cross them or tuck them under you.

Avoid ‘Text Neck’ Many of us go from spending our nine to five bent over a computer keyboard to whiling away the evening hunched over a phone or tablet. In fact, smartphone users now spend an average of two to four hours a day with their heads lowered. This

can lead to that all too common feeling of being stiff and sore around your upper back, shoulder blades and neck. Save yourself a fortune on pricey massages and try lengthening your neck as you tuck in your chin as an exercise. Alternatively, why not go old school and give someone a call instead of texting them?

Don’t Get In A Rut When there’s a particularly gripping TV show on, it can be easy to develop the kind of rigor mortis seen in a Silent Witness corpse. But try and move around a bit to boost blood circulation. Shift position every half hour or so, or get up and walk around - even if it’s just over to the kettle and back.

Get The Family Involved Working on your posture takes time and effort, so why not get your partner, kids or friends on board for the posture crusade? When one of you looks at risk of slumping like a soggy-bottomed cake on Bake Off, give each other a gentle nudge. Your backs will thank you for it.

Financial planning

Time to give your investments a

spring clean by David K Barton APFS Cert CII(MP), Chartered Financial Planner and Managing Director

S

pring’s the time of year when people traditionally give their homes a thorough freshen up, removing any unnecessary clutter. It’s not just homes that deserve a thorough annual deep clean - investors should do the same with their portfolios.

monitor. In addition to making sure you have a well thought-through mix of assets, it is vitally important to closely monitor your individual funds, especially those which are actively managed since fund managers can drop the ball or change jobs.

The start of a new tax year is as good a time as any to stand back and calmly review your overall investment strategy. Even originally well-planned portfolios need to be periodically reviewed and rebalanced, as allocations to different asset classes and markets naturally drift over time. That can mean the risk-profile of a portfolio can change materially, and the portfolio no longer matches your needs or goals.

We believe the problem can be particularly acute amongst those investors who have lost touch with their financial adviser since the introduction of reforms to how financial advice is paid for, a period which has also seen many banks withdraw from providing financial advice.

Three steps for an investment Spring Clean The key criteria to consider when reviewing your portfolio are: • understanding the level of risk you are exposed to • knowing how well-balanced your asset allocation is • the quality of the underlying funds and stocks Many investors simply don’t regularly review their portfolios. They tend to buy investments as ad hoc decisions, hold … and forget. New funds are opened, rather than topping up existing ones which over time leads to sprawling portfolios that are difficult to

Pitching for

success David Sudworth talks to two Orrell RUFC stalwarts hoping to help deliver plans for new £1m community sports complex in the area

B

etween the two clubs, they’ve chalked up 225 years of serving the community. And for both Orrell Rugby Union and Winstanley Park Cricket Club, the future is looking bright as plans for an all-new £1m joint sports complex in the area are gathering pace. Despite rumours circulating in the area, the precise location is as yet unconfirmed. However, Local Life can reveal that in fact four sites have been considered within an approximate one-mile radius of Orrell’s old Edge Hall Road ground. It’s hoped that, ultimately, a planning application will be submitted to Wigan Council later this year.

“A real community sporting hub” A joint committee, comprising of members from both Orrell RU and Winstanley Park, are working on bringing the plans to fruition in what they hope will be a real sporting hub for this part of Wigan.

John Huyton (left) and Tony Havlin

In Orrell’s case, it will spell an end to years of being ‘homeless,’ having moved out of Edge Hall Road in 2007. The senior team now plies its trade in the South Lancs/Cheshire Division 2 League. For many on the outside, it looked like a massive fall from grace for a side which only a decade earlier had been playing professionally. But Orrell’s name is still widely respected, as club treasurer John Huyton has discovered. “I was at Twickenham once with my Orrell shirt on and one guy, who I’d never met before in my life, came up to me and said how pleased he was to still see Orrell’s name knocking around. We ended up having a beer together and I discovered he was actually from Bath.

55

the next generation of players,” says Tony Havlin, club chairman and former player. “This community sporting complex will act as rallying point. It will probably cost up to £1m but obviously that will be phased over a number of years.” Apart from grants from various sporting bodies, Orrell are also hoping to increase their membership.

“Next generation of players” Treasurer John, a former Heinz apprentice who played youth rugby for Orrell in the late 1970s, is setting his target at 450: “We’ve got around 365 members at the moment and they are drawn from near, like Orrell, Up Holland and Wigan, to far like Australia and France.

Action from Orrell juniors

“It’s like when we have our sportsman’s dinners, for us to get the likes of Damian Hopley is terrific. Damian played for Wasps and England, and is now chief executive of the Rugby Players’ Association, so to have him here, as we did recently, is a great coup.”

“People do have a real affinity for the club. Lots of ex-players are still involved and in fact there have been generations and generations of the same family playing for Orrell. One modern-day indication is the Huxley family, which has had eight members playing for Orrell.” For Winstanley Park Cricket Club, the move from its current base at Hall Lane also represents a positive opportunity.

Officials say that for rugby union to survive in a town where it is frequently eclipsed by rugby league, not to mention football, Orrell needs its own base.

As one of the town’s oldest sporting organisations, it was founded in 1878 by employees of the Bankes estate, such as gardeners, gamekeepers, joiners, stable hands who, in the club’s words, felt the need of other sporting entertainment than wrestling, whippet racing or pigeon fancying - some of the more common pastimes of the day.

“Union isn’t played in schools nowadays, and for a club like Orrell to survive, it needs to bring through

In a similar vein to Orrell, the club has had mixed fortunes. 20 years ago, with membership levels

Since leaving Edge Hall Road eight years ago, Orrell have been playing at St John Rigby College while the old ground is now used by Wigan Warriors.

56

The senior teams play in the Southport & District Saturday League and the West Lancs Sunday League.

Winstanley Park cricketers with Lord Winstanley in the 1980s

Orrell chairman Tony, who went to Up Holland Grammar, believes the move to a new, community complex is a win-win for both Winstanley Park, Orrell RUFC and the wider community: “Using the names of our two clubs to build a community sports complex is the perfect match. We are realistic in our vision, and not blinkered. Both clubs

dropping, it merged with nearby Garswood but kept the name. The club also suffered a five year hiatus with its junior section until it got back on track with the setting up of an under-nines team in 2008.

work well together.

“Roaring youth success”

“By all working together, we hope to create something which everyone is proud and can feel part of.”

Its youth set up is now a roaring success, and is recognised as Centre of Excellence by Lancashire Cricket Board and the Wigan Cricket Development Group, particularly for under 9s and 11s girls.

“For Orrell, the affinity people have for the club has helped enormously in the past eight years. We are holding our Annual General Meeting soon and we’ll be talking about our general plans there.

Orrell RUFC’s AGM is on Wednesday, May 6, at 7.30pm at St Luke’s Church Hall, Lodge Road, Orrell. For more information, visit www.pitchero.com/ clubs/orrellrugbyunion/

Orrell Rugby’s early days were a riot - literally! Orrell RUFC was founded in 1927 at a meeting held in the stables of J. C. Simpkins’ home in Chapel Street, Pemberton. John Simpkin was a student, and along with fellow scholars Jack Gaskell and Charlie Holt, they travelled daily by train to Liverpool. They were joined at Rainford by other students who eventually challenged them to a game of rugby. Two games took place at Walthew House Farm, using soccer

posts with wooden clothes props tied to the posts to form uprights. Two more games were played against Wigan Collegians, and Wigan Old Boys 3rd team, both games being played on the Donkey Field at Billinge. Captain against Wigan Old Boys was Bill Liptrot, who reported that the game was abandoned by the referee, Mr Peter Gore a Wigan school master, when rioting broke out between the players and spectators just before half time!

Shop buildings

revived

A row of abandoned shops in Ashton town centre are set to be regenerated. Five units on Wigan Road, next to Queens Nightclub, have been derelict for years, prompting concerns over the future of the buildings themselves. However, Robin Park Letting Agents Wigan Ltd, of Ayrefield Road, Roby Mill, have now been granted permission to turn them into residential accomodation. The proposal is for five houses with a rear extension at numbers 41 and 43.

The row of former shops in Ashton town centre

In reaching their decision, Wigan Council planners said the plans meet the policy of changing the use of former shops to residential properties, and that in their view it will not affect the vitality and viability of Ashton town centre.

Their report continued: “Each property can accomodate a parking space to the rear. The site is in a highly sustainable location with excellent public transport links and easy access to local shops and services.”

New recruits join regional construction firm Two engineering experts from Wigan have joined one of biggest housebuilders in the region. Highfield resident Lee Kindon joins Harbur Construction, based near Manchester Airport, from MCI Developments where he worked as an engineering manager. Lee has over 20 years’ experience at house builders including Persimmon Homes, Bovis Homes and Gleeson Homes. The 37-year-old will head up design and information management for Harbur’s growing number of projects. Andrew Sharkey, from Springfield, joins Harbur as construction manager from Persimmon Homes,

where he was responsible for a number of housing schemes across Cheshire and North Wales. The 47-year-old, who entered the industry as an apprentice joiner in 1983, has worked through the ranks to become a construction manager. He will oversee the firm’s construction developments including housing projects in Wavertree, Eccles and Prescot. Harbur recently completed work on a new multimillion pound affordable housing development which has transformed a derelict site on Borsdane Avenue, Hindley.

West Lancs issues alert over tree pruning Firms carrying out tree pruning in West Lancs are being urged to demonstrate to customers they have the qualifications and insurances to do the job. It comes after the local council put out a warning

to residents. Head planner John Harrison said: “It is important that contractors carrying out works to trees are properly qualified and insured to do the work and use the correct protective equipment.”

Heinz jobs loss link Bosses at Heinz in Kitt Green have denied that a fresh round of job losses are linked with its recent merger. The company announced that 71 posts would be going at the plant just days before it was revealed that Heinz would be buying Kraft, one of the largest food businesses in the world. In 2013, Heinz was bought by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital for £18bn. Trade union Unite claimed this move would put jobs at risk. But a spokesmanfor Heinz said: : “As part of our ongoing drive to increase competitiveness and improve efficiency we are investing in projects

denied to automate the movement of finished goods from the production line and also to further optimise our can-making operations. In parallel we also recently secured funding for a number of voluntary redundancies for non-management operations employees as well as factory based non-management distribution centre employees. This has resulted in a reduction of 71 roles through voluntary redundancy at the site. “Temporary staff make a valuable contribution to our Kitt Green operations such as during periods of high demand. “As we come out of the soup season, the need for temporary staff changes as we shift our production requirements.”

Wigan plans to be discussed at business event Wigan business leaders are being invited to an event to learn more about planned infrastructure schemes for the borough. Mike Worden, of Wigan Council, will give a presentation at the next Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Action For Business Wigan event. Mr Worden will introduce the Great Places group vision for the borough, which will include details about the Wigan road and infrastructure programme. Emma Barton, also from Wigan Council, will talk about the benefits of doing business in the borough. The event takes place on Friday, April 24, from noon-2pm at the Holiday Inn, Leigh Sports Village. Alan’s brand new

chapter David Sudworth meets a Winstanley globetrotter-turned-author who only started writing following a freak accident at home

A

s a Latics season ticket holder, having stood on the terraces since their nonleague days, Alan Rogers is used to suffering the ups and downs of life.

For decades, the Winstanley grandafather travelled to some of the world’s most far-flung places on business with Wigan mining machinery firm Gullick Dobson. Not that being far away could stop him from getting to the match. On one occasion, he’d just landed back in Britain with a severe case of food poisoning and he was under doctor’s orders to rest. However, that meant missing newly-promoted Wigan’s first-ever game in the Premier League. “There was no way that was going to happen so I got myself to the game. I don’t remember much about it because I was pumped full of medication but I just had to be there,” says Alan. “I even went to the FA Cup Final. I’m not one of these people who think football is a matter of life and death but I don’t mind saying that when the final whistle went, I did cry.”

Alan on his trusty laptop at home

There have been other stomach-churning moments for Alan. From being arrested at gunpoint in Dehli to an attempted mugging in Moscow’s Red Square, the former IT boss has got plenty of stories to tell. Which is just as well because when a freak accident at home left him with problems in his hands and fingers, he started typing on his laptop to keep them moving. This spurred him on to write his first book, Strikers Instinct, which has just been released. The plot revolves around two main characters who grew up in the same small Lancashire town but their paths only really crossed when they were thrown together by a violent incident at university. The two became lifelong friends and after years apart building separate careers, they both meet again in the town of their birth.

64

India, China, Poland, Siberia, Mongolia, Russia and all over the United States. “I could sit here for hours because some of stories I’ve got from these places are amazing. “About six years ago, I had an accident in the garden. I’d been pruning a tree, as I stood on the ground to admire my handiwork, I took a step back and fell over. Unfortunately, I fell onto a concrete gnome, the top of which went straight into my back.

“It missed my spine and vital organs by inches” Alan on the DW pitch with Latics’ Mario Melchiot One of them becomes a doctor while the other is a former successful head of a large IT company. The action moves from the boardroom to the football pitch and involves betrayal and devotion.

“I couldn’t feel my legs and I was really worried that I may be spending the rest of my life in a wheelchair. However, I’d been very lucky as it had missed my vital organs and my spine by a couple of inches. After a few days, the feeling came back but what the accident did do was trigger arthritis.

Hmm.. IT and football... could Alan’s book be more fact than fiction? “A few people have said that,” he laughs. “It is purely fictional - it’s not about Latics or me. When I was growing up, I was taught to write about what I know, so that has guided me, but it is definitely fictional.” Having grown up in Linden Street, Pemberton, Alan attended St Cuthbert’s and St John Rigby Grammar, before joining Gullicks in 1976, aged 18, working from their site in Birkett Bank, Scholes.

“One computer took up three entire rooms” “Back then, one computer took up three entire rooms and was about as powerful as just one modern-day laptop,” recalls Alan, now 56. “I was eventually made the Eurasian Head of IT for what eventually became Joy Mining Machinery and was lucky enough to work in countries such as

I contacted local radio DJ Tony Horne who is also an author. He put me in touch with his publishers and the book has now been released.”

“Doctors suggested I use a laptop” Alan retired from full-time work last year, and loves spending time with his family. He’s been married to his wife Jane, deputy headteacher at St Aidan’s, on Holmes House Avenue, Winstanley, for 33 years. In July, she’ll have worked there for 32 years. The couple have a son Chris, 30, a daughter Becky, 25, who is a teaching assistant at St James, a threeyear-old granddaughter, Evie. Alan is now working on his next book, to be titled Premier Instinct: “I never set out to write books but it’s something I’ve really enjoyed. It’s therapy in more than one sense of the word!” Strikers Instinct, published by Troubador, is now available as an e-book, priced at £3.99 per download, from Alan’s website www.gomonline. co.uk. James and the giant

on’t get James Martin started on the number of chefs on TV at the moment.

Yes, he may be a chef, and yes he may be on telly a fair bit, but he’s also rather fed up with seeing members of his profession clambering for their close-ups. “Fundamentally, I’m doing something I love,” reasons the Malton-born 42-year-old. “I never wanted to be on television, I didn’t go into this industry to be on TV, and unfortunately now, most chefs when you ask the younger ones, well, they just want to be on TV. It’s not about that.” While the statement seems to contradict Martin’s own TV engagements, including Saturday Kitchen and the second series of Home Comforts, filmed at his home and based on his new book of the same name, he insists his career is built on a rock steady love of food. “The industry is so important to me first, and the TV is secondary,” he adds. But it doesn’t sound like he’s in a rush to leave the small screen soon. Having taken part in BBC One’s Meet The Street, where he took famous people back to their hometowns to tackle loneliness in their area, he is evangelical about the power of TV. “I just think TV is such a magical thing, as it can change people’s lives and make you cry, make you happy,” explains Martin. “It’s an amazing thing, really. The more I do it, the more I enjoy it. I’ve been doing it for 20 years now and it’s just the best job in the world... but then I always want my other job.” And it’s his “other job” that really gets him buzzing. “I go back to my kitchen for normality, that’s my day job,” says Martin. But he loves the chance to “dive in and out”, and travel the country meeting foodies for work. “Meeting people is fascinating,” he says. “Whatever they do, wherever they’re from, whatever they’ve got, people are fascinating.” Home Comforts by James Martin is published in hardback by Quadrille publishing, priced £20. Beer-marinated

pork with chard gratin

69

Serves 6 Ingredients For the pork: 2tbsp sea salt 2tbsp dark brown sugar 1tsp black peppercorns 4 garlic cloves, lightly crushed 2 bay leaves 2tbsp yellow mustard seeds (1tbsp soaked in water overnight) 4 sprigs of thyme 4 sprigs of flat-leaf parsley 500ml beer, preferably a good ale 1-1.2kg 6-rib pork loin rack, French-trimmed 50g unsalted butter 100g brioche, roughly torn 1tsp English mustard powder 1tbsp brown mustard seeds, soaked in water overnight Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper For the gratin: 700g chard, chopped into 2cm pieces 2 large potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-1.5cm chunks 1 onion, sliced 50g unsalted butter 50g plain flour 400ml whole milk 200ml chicken stock 100g gruyere cheese, grated Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method Pour 100ml of cold water into a saucepan, add the sea salt and sugar and heat until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat. Now mix in 400ml of cold water, the peppercorns, garlic, bay, unsoaked yellow mustard seeds, thyme, parsley and beer. Put the pork loin into a large bowl or sealable bag then pour in the liquid and cover. Place in the fridge for 24 hours, turning occasionally. When ready to cook, preheat the oven to 200C/400F/gas mark 6. Remove the pork from the bag and pat dry. Heat a large frying pan over a medium heat, then add the butter and heat until foaming. Carefully seal the pork on each side until light golden brown, then transfer to a roasting tray. Roast for 15 minutes. Put the brioche, mustard powder and soaked yellow and brown mustard seeds into a food processor and blitz to a paste, then season. Set aside. Meanwhile, make the gratin: Layer half the chard and potatoes into an ovenproof dish, scatter over the onion, then place the rest of the chard and potatoes on top. Put the butter in a saucepan and melt, then add the flour and cook for a couple of minutes until light golden brown. Add the milk gradually, whisking until you have a smooth white sauce, then whisk in the stock and half the cheese and cook until melted. Season with salt and pepper, then pour the sauce over the chard and potatoes and top with the remaining cheese. After the pork has been cooking for 15 minutes, spread the brioche paste over the top. Decrease the oven temperature to 180C/350F/gas mark 4, then return it to the oven for 45 minutes to crisp the crumb and finish cooking the pork through. Place the gratin in the oven at the same time. Remove the pork from the oven and rest for 15 minutes, while the gratin finishes cooking. Carve the pork and serve with the chard gratin.

Taste test

Wild

thing! by David Sudworth

W

hat constitutes a ‘proper’ pub in 2015? Answers will vary but if there’s a log fire, beer garden and a homely atmosphere, we Brits are generally happy.

Fifteens At The Fox in Roby Mill is all that, but with a twist. For instance, this 17th Century establishment prides itself on the mismatching light fittings and furnishings, as well as an array of weird and wonderful old jugs. Shy and retiring it ain’t, but that’s why the locals love it. Opened by Wigan pub chain boss Tony Callaghan in late 2013, Fifteens At The Fox is in a fantastic location in the heart of Roby Mill. So the location and decor may be notable, but does the food pass muster? My colleague Nicola and I, fresh from a morning’s toil at the Local Life coalface recently, went to Fifteens for some lunch. It had been a good four years since I was last there, and was keen to see how it had been transformed. The menu was varied but not overloaded with too many dishes, which is always a good sign. Painful experience tells me that chefs who spread themselves too thinly rarely deliver. For starters, I chose the Aroncini while Nicola opted for the trio of mini fish cakes. My deep-fried saffron risotto balls were stuffed with mozzarella, and served with house salad and chilli sauce. What impressed me was how the Aroncini kept its circular shape, and crunch, even when under attack from my cutlery. The dainty saffron mixed with the sauce provided an entree which surpassed my own expectations. Head Chef Martin Windsor later told me the Aroncini was homemade, which made sense considering how robust and flavoursome it was. Nicola’s mini fish cakes looked delightful, and she reported that the taste matched the texture to make a perfect appetiser. The main courses consisted of Thai green tiger prawn curry for myself and venison steak in a black cherry jus for Nicola. For me, Thai curry is usually dicey ground. Fragrance is

75

the key word here, and yet time after time many places serve up bland, soup-like concoctions which do little for the palate. Not here though, this homemade dish oozed a fusion of delectable tastes which had the advantage of being non-overbearing without falling into an ocean of insipidness. Nicola’s venison, served with creamy mash alongside

worth asking. All in all, I’m pleased to have renewed my acquaintance with The Fox. In many ways, the new experience was more ‘fun’ – probably down to the quirky décor and varied menu. Going back to what I said at the start, what actually constitutes a ‘proper’ pub these days? Sure, it has all the traditional elements, but folk want a dash of individual panache as well, not a repainted Berni Inn. Tony Callaghan knows this and that’s why his venues always seem one step ahead. At Fifteens At The Fox, you can count on traditional values, but an ethos which is, much like the name suggests, a little wild at heart.

seasonal veg, was just what the doctor ordered for this most carnivorous of dinner time companions. Although I bristled at the thought of ‘eating Rudolph’ (don’t worry kids, it wasn’t really him) I did find the presentation a fine ambassador for this dish. Nicola was in a generous mood and allowed me a morsel of meat. Even though I’m not a natural venison fan, it was very agreeable and a special shout-out for the jus, which took the edge of the meat’s natural gamey flavours. For desserts, I had the chocolate brownie while Nicola chose the strawberry cheesecake. While fine specimens on their own, the coup de grace was the delightful ice cream, which riffs on a seasonal theme. Recently, the De Roma-sourced sweet was fused with Crème Egg, but it will have changed by now so it’s

Jack’s Tracks

Billinge

Circular by Chris Pearce

B

illinge is the home of the Lump, Merseyside’s highest point, and as a result of the high ridge that the Lump is part of, it also has its own micro-climate along with, believe it or not, its own type of rain! Billinge Rain is a fine drizzle that soaks you thoroughly and, according to my late Mum, would give you pneumonia if you continued to play out in it! This 8 mile Billinge Circular walk encompasses many of the older and picturesque settlements on the outskirts of the village; starting off through those low lying areas such as Chadwick Green and Birchley, right up to the heights of Brownlow and Bispham, before dropping down to the depths of the Goyt valley, near to the starting point. Park in the vicinity of the Masons Arms pub on Carr Mill Road (WN5 7TY), and head off in a southerly direction down Carr Mill Road for 150 yards. Just before a stone house on your right (117 Carr Mill Road) branch off to the right and follow the bridle way for approximately 400 yards. When you arrive at a junction in the track (where the gas pipeline is), turn right. The footpath eventually becomes Lime Vale Road and meets up, 400 yards later, with the main Birchley Road. Turn right, and after 25 yards turn left at the public footpath sign. Once you’ve passed the houses, the path dips downhill to a brook. Cross the brook and head uphill in the same direction away from the brook. Follow the path for 550 yards (bear left around the copse) and you’ll arrive at Rainford Road. Turn right and follow Rainford Road for 500 yards, then take the left turn into Red Barn Road. Follow this road for ½ mile until you reach Red Barn Farm. Turn left at the footpath sign just before the farmyard and go round the barn, and then take the footpath to the left of the second barn.

86

Follow that path away from the farm until you reach another post with multiple footpath signs – just carry straight on. Go over the stream, bear left around the edge of a field, and you’ll end up at Crank Road. Ignore the public footpath sign opposite, and instead turn right and walk uphill for 50 yards, then take the track on the left signposted Promised Land farm.

You’ll follow this track past Billinge Hall. Carry on, (ignore the footpath to the left) and follow this track uphill, past the new wind turbines, until you reach the derelict building on the left. Look out for a public footpath sign on the right and then hop over the stile onto a field. Start the steep climb up the hill, sticking to the left hand perimeter of the field, until you reach the top left hand corner of the field.

Turn left you’ll quickly spot an entry on the right by Manor House. Go down the entry onto Cob Moor Road, and follow this road in the same direction until you reach Upholland Road. Turn right for approximately 50 yards and then turn left, dropping down into Longshaw village. Follow the road right through the village for approximately 1/3 mile until you reach a sharp left hand bend with a double set of farm gates at different angles. Go through the first set of gates and follow this path for ¾ of a mile, skirting round the edge of Chair Wood, until you reach Wigan Road. Turn right along the main road for 400 yards until you reach Castle Cottages. Take the left turn by the footpath sign opposite the Cottages, and head down that track for 450 yards, through the farmyard of Maddox House, until you reach an L shaped copse of fir trees. Once you reach the far corner of the copse, look hard for a well concealed signpost. This directs you to a pathway running diagonally across the fields towards Barton Clough Woods. Once you get to the woods you’ll quickly cross Down Brook and then head uphill through the woods. Once you hit daylight again, follow the path Hop over the stile and stay on the same directional course until you reach a track by a gate. Turn right for 30 yards and go through the next gate. After a few yards the track splits; make sure you take the left turn following the track rather than the path on the right. Go downhill for approximately 250 yards and you’ll end up at Brownlow Farm. Bear right when you get into the farmyard and go through the hamlet of Brownlow until you reach Crank Road. Turn left for 50 yards and then take the public footpath on the right just before the first house. Follow the path downhill for just over 300 yards and you’ll eventually emerge onto Trevelyan Road.

88

in the same direction. You’ll pass Tatlock’s Hillock on the right and eventually arrive by Lower Billinge Lane Farm, on the Newton Road. Turn right onto the main road for 120 yards and then take a left at the public footpath sign towards Blackleyhurst Farm.

football pitch. Follow that path to its conclusion at Barrows Farm on Carr Mill Road and turn left. Go round the bend and the Masons Arms is 170 yards on the left hand side.

Just before the farm, turn right down the track. Ignore the next track on the left that takes you down the perimeter at the back of the farm, but take the next left 200 yards further on. Follow the track for approximately 350 yards to the T-junction. Turn left for 100 yards, and then turn right just before the coal spoil heaps, known locally as the Blue Hills. Follow the track for 1/3 mile in a southerly direction, and just after a sharp left hand bend there is an enclosed footpath on the right just before near a

Visit a garden designers Award Winner

garden! by Angie Barker

I

f you’ve ever wondered what a garden designer’s garden might look like, then come along to my garden on Sunday, 28th June. I am opening my garden for the second year running as part of the National Gardens Scheme. This organisation has been opening private gardens to raise money for nursing and cancer charities since 1927 and how much the NGS is able to donate is driven by the number of visitors that go to the gardens. The ‘Yellow Book’ is a directory of all the open gardens, there are several in Lancashire which open throughout the year and if you don’t have a copy of the Yellow Book, go on line at www.ngs.org.uk . There are all manner of gardens from village openings to roof gardens; tiny cottage gardens to rolling acres; allotments and even barges! I have to admit I am beginning to wonder why I ever proposed my garden for opening, as if I don’t have enough to do running a busy design business – and this year my daughter is getting married the week after! I think what it comes down to is wanting to share the pleasure which my garden gives me, with other people. And raising money for extremely good causes at the same time is the icing on the cake.

Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.

Entrance is £3.50 for adults, children free admission, and the garden opens from 11am through to 4pm. Car parking is available at the Dray King pub car park with a 5 minute walk from there. 40 Acreswood Avenue, Hindley Green, Wigan WN2 4NJ Please don’t expect to see Tatton Park or a Chelsea Flower Show garden, we have a small ordinary plot on a modern housing estate - but if you have the time, do come along - you may pick up some ideas for your own garden. And you could meet much maligned Hubby, his role on the day is to nip to the shop when we run out of tea bags. Hope to see you there!

Where the grass is

greener Imagine having a lush, green lawn without having to put in hours of backbreaking work. Thankfully, local lads Andy Ashcroft and Paul Bates have come up with the answer – low maintenance artificial grass! Started by a chance conversation while the two friends were chatting on the way to a game of five-a-side football. Turfcouk was born and now business is booming with plenty of satisfied customers who are taking advantage of this new technology. It’s not difficult to see why. The use of artificial turf is – if you’ll forgive the pun – growing, particularly in the UK. Once only the preserve of top sporting venues, it is now being used more and more in people’s gardens, particularly those who have young children, pets, busy lives or even mobility issues. Once the artificial grass has been expertly installed there’s no more worrying about cleaning up muddy footprints, spending hours weeding it or having to spend precious time at the weekend (when it’s not raining!) mowing the garden. Plus, it is child and pet proof, and feels almost as natural and beautiful as the real thing. “Everyone loves a freshly-cut lawn but these days, people don’t have the time to be able to spend hours working on the garden. It’s also quite deflating to spend time and effort on the lawn, and then have to do exactly the same things again a few weeks later just to keep it looking smart.

93

“There are also the cost and environmental benefits to artificial turf because you don’t have to use fertilisers or pesticides. And think of all the water you’ll save! With artificial turf, you can simply sit back and enjoy a green lawn which retains its colour all year around without having to spend money on it over and over again.” So if you are looking for an all-weather, durable solution to ensure that you get the best out of your garden, remember “The Grass is Always Greener With Turfcouk!”

Madness

M

ore than 35 years after they formed, Madness are stronger than ever. To prove the point, this summer North London’s nuttiest pop institution embark on the biggest tour of their career. The Grandslam Madness itinerary takes the band, led by singer Suggs, to perform at a selection of the nation’s leading sporting grounds including Haydock Park Racecourse on Friday, July 3, as part of the Jockey Club Live Presents an Evening At The Races. In the process of bringing Madness to the masses the tour will be a trip down sporting memory lane for Suggs, who first began exploring the UK as a (Chelsea) football fan before Madness first hit the road in 1979.

“It’ll be the greatest tour since Boudicca. We’ll be going across the countryside rampaging and pillaging. We have our people working on designing a chariot as we speak,” he laughs What are the qualities that make Madness endure? I think it’s because we genuinely do enjoy ourselves. You could see the joy in the early videos we made and hear it in the records. How do you keep the feeling of it being fresh? Traditionally, we don’t tour for months and months - we gave up on America and they probably gave up on us. This one’s special as no one has ever done something as big as this at sporting venues like this.

97

How will you keep yourself match fit? I have a suspicion that if I didn’t have a few tequila shots before I went on stage I wouldn’t be quite as lubricated in the joints. Tequila and orange juice is the secret of keeping those limbs loose. How well have you got to know England and how has it changed over 25 years of touring? It’s a funny old cliché but Madness always seem to do better in times of recession, not that we ever wished it upon anybody.

Are you looking forward to this tour? Of course! It’s great to do something new. Something not done before. And it really feels like a tour of the people in places where they can have fun – where we can have fun. Last time we played at Haydock we had a tremendous gig something like 20,000 people turned up and they were only expecting 10,000. Simply Red had held the record up to that point so I think we are the record holders for Haydock, returning as reigning champions.

#

Maybe during these periods people need a bit of cheering up and, without being trite, our raison d’etre has always been about livening up a dull day. That was the reason for calling our last album Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da - basically yes in several languages because there seems to be an awful lot of no, no, no at the minute and we could do with a lot more yes, yes, yes, particularly in the lower orders of society.

Porsche

Panamera by Tim Barnes-Clay

I

t looks like a bloated beast and occasionally it handles like one. The Porsche Panamera’s swollen exterior is more obvious at the back of the car; it’s too bulbous to look athletic.

But there is no disguising the ability of the vehicle. Two enormous tail pipes jut from the car’s stern like horizontal steel chimneys; these more than hint at the clout that the corpulent car is capable of serving up. The front of the Panamera is far more Porsche-like, with its sweeping curved bonnet and ever-so-slightly ‘hang-dog-eyed’ headlights. Approaching it from the front, or when peering down its long, wide, snout, its form starts to draw you in. Through its proportions alone, the Porsche Panamera stands out clearly in its market segment. It measures 1931mm (76.0in) in width and 1418mm (55.8in) in height, while its overall length is 4970mm (195.7in). And this particular oil-burner model can be recognised by the lettering ‘diesel’ on the front doors. Step inside, and the plush cabin reeks of cowhide. The sumptuous seating-for-four and lengthy legroom, both front and rear, provide the comfort you would expect from a car costing over £60,000.

99

taking four passengers from Lands End to Loch Ness without refuelling. Performance and low consumption are accompanied by smooth running and low emissions. An additional contributing factor is the auto start/stop function, which is de rigueur.

Indeed, every Panamera, has a high level of standard specification. This includes Porsche Active Suspension Management, which adapts handling to suit your preferred driving style. In ‘Normal’ mode the car delivers a blend of performance and comfort, and then there’s a ‘Sport’ setting where the setup is much firmer. The Porsche also comes with vivid Bi-Xenon headlights; parking sensors; tyre pressure monitoring; automatic dimming rear view mirrors; touch-screen satellite navigation and audio controls, as well as cruise control. In addition, the car is available with rear-wheel drive and uses a highly efficient eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

Porsche has never suffered from a poor image. Sure, like most automakers, there have been tiny blips in its history, but nothing detrimental. The arrival of the Panamera Diesel has definitely polarised the opinion of the petrolheaded purists though. Many don’t see it as a ‘proper’ Porsche, and its styling certainly doesn’t achieve universal acclaim. That said; it’s an awesome car to go long distance travelling in with three other’s to accompany you. You’re also bound to get lots of looks – but not always for the right reason.

The 3.0 litre six cylinder turbo diesel car is made for touring - that much is obvious. A View From The Lump Local gossip, gripes and goings-on I’m from Billinge, me Amid all the fuss about the Big Vote on May 7, there is also the small matter of local elections on that day too. It’s at times like this I pity the poor folk of Orrell/ Billinge who regularly have to endure the ‘“’I’m from Billinge, me’” line used in local candidates’ literature. Most are referring, of course, to spending the first three days of their lives on a maternity ward at Billinge Hospital, before being wheeled off to another part of our fine and pleasant borough. Let’s get this straight, being born at Billinge Hospital does not qualify you as a paid up member of The Billingers Club. Claiming otherwise will make you look desperate; never a good look for

any politico. And trust me, them Billingers are very picky about who they let in.

Crosstown traffic It’s one of the great conundrums of our time, ranking alongside age-old brainteasers such as ‘why is the earth round?’ or ‘what’s the point of Joey Essex?’ But after years of head-scratching, I have the answer as to why, every spring, roadworks spread like a rash right across the area. Once Burns Night is out of the way, you can’t turn a corner without being greeted by a parade of cones, temporary lights and a group of YTS lads in hi-vis waistcoats huddled around a patch of fresh tarmacadam (one clutching a rake, and three to ‘supervise’ him). They’ve been at it again recently on my road, causing tailbacks as long as the Grand Union Canal. Apparently, the reason for this mass chaos is two-fold. Firstly, we’re all driving too fast and noone is taking a blind bit of notice of the 20mph ‘zones’, so roadworks slow us down. And secondly, because oil prices have fallen through the floor, the JR Ewings of

this world need us to burn more of their four-star - and what better way than standing in a queue for half an hour going nowhere fast? I have all this inside info on good authority from a contact who has ‘proof’ the moon landings were filmed at Ashurst’s Beacon. I’m not so sure myself. I tend to believe it was shot at the DW Stadium, where - like the moon - there’s also no atmosphere whatsoever.

Because I’m app-y The youngest came round for tea the other day, and the subject of ‘modern technology’ cropped up. Deepest joy. As you’ll know, I’m perfectly happy with my turntable and collection of 45s, but that didn’t stop him droning on and on about the benefits of iPads. Having assured him my vision is perfectly fine, we then got onto the subject of Blackberries. Again, I protested that I’ve always found them a bit sour, so he then turned his attention to tablets. “Ah, I know all about these. They’re like mini, flat-screen computers aren’t they?” I replied. “No, ” he said. “I need two aspirins. Explaining technology to you has given me a blinding headache!”
