April Gardening Tips

C

lear the last of the winter bedding from containers and borders and, if you have not grown your own, buy new summer bedding for planting out once all fear of frost has past.

Once the fear of frosts has passed you can put out your hanging baskets and patio tubs full of summer bedding plants.

Continue to dead head any remaining daffodils and tulips but do not take off the foliage until it is brown and then feed with a liquid fertilizer.

Shade the greenhouse and damp down the floors on hot days after opening vents and doors. Prune spring flowering shrubs and clematis Montana.

Tie in new shoots of honeysuckle and clematis or if you have bare walls or fences now is a good time to plant new climbers.

When the danger of frost has passed plant out cannas and dahlias. Hoe the borders on a regular basis to prevent weeds from getting a hold.

At the end of the month plant up new pond plants and marginals in baskets. New water lilies that are not tall enough to reach the surface can be placed on upturned pots or bricks but be careful not to puncture the liner. Aim to have at least three quarters of the pond surface covered with leaves as

this helps to keep the water from turning green. Feed beds, borders and containers every two weeks.

Lawns If the edge of the lawn is looking particularly untidy after the winter re-cut edges with a half moon lawn edger for a really neat look. After that keep the edges tidy by clipping with long handled edging shears for a pristine look.

Mow on a regularly basis, lowering the height of cut gradually but raise it again during any prolonged dry spells.

If you haven’t already fed your lawn this spring, give it a feed of a high nitrogen lawn fertilizer to keep it looking green.

Fruit and Vegetables Put nets over any fruits that are about to ripen to stop the birds eating them.

Remove any strawberry runners so the plants put all their energy into producing fruit.

If a late frost is forecast cover stone fruits with a fleece at night but remove in the morning so that pollinating insects have free access.

Make sure that any fruit trained against a wall or fence receive enough water during

LOCAL ANSWER the fruit development stage. Plants can be in a rain shadow when up against a tall structure and will need extra watering.

To keep the codling moth from your apple trees hang pheromone traps amongst the trees. Continue with successional sowings of salad crops.

Sow the seeds of Runner and French beans into prepared rows outside or train then up wigwams if you have less room.

If you have not grown your own vegetables from seed you can buy small plug plants cheaply now and fill your garden with these.

If you don’t have a dedicated vegetable bed there are many attractive vegetables such as lollo rosso lettuce, swiss chard and even runner beans that look really good placed between flowering plants as they did in the old days to make a real cottage garden.

Wildlife Be careful when cutting hedges that there is not a bird’s nest in there being used at the moment. If there is leave the hedge uncut until the fledglings have flown the nest.

Neither the birds nor the hedge will suffer.

Keep the bird bath clean and topped up with fresh water.

Keep feeding the birds but make sure there are no large pieces that the mothers could take back to the chicks and choke them.

If you would like to attract the summer visiting birds such as swifts and housemartins you can buy special nesting boxes to put up in the garden. Swallows will make their own nests.

A FAMILIAR LOOK WITH LOTS OF IMPROVEMENTS - GREAT NEWS FOR ‘OUTBACK’ ENTHUSIASTS!

W

hile the 2015 Outback is a really effective update on earlier models, Subaru have cleverly retained the strong points that previous buyers admired so much.

The somewhat cautious redesign looks a bit sleeker but keeps the five-passenger crossover style and sticking to the familiar exterior design will still give Subaru enthusiasts a strong feeling of familiarity.

They should, however, be well impressed with the improvements that are presented within the 2015 model. It has gained about half an inch in length, a couple of inches in height and - in some cases -around 162 pounds in weight, a testament to the improved quality incorporated into the design.

Buyers have a choice of two trim levels; SE and SE Premium. SE comes with automatic LED headlights and headlight washers, cruise control, Active Torque Vectoring, 17inch alloys, heated front seats, electrically

adjustable driver’s seat and privacy glass, as well as a 7.0-inch touch-screen infotainment system that comes with satnav, Smartphone connectivity and a rear view parking camera.

Petrol SE models also come with a engine stop-start system and Subaru Intelligent Drive, which allows drivers to choose between different engine modes. SE

LOCAL ANSWER Premium adds a sunroof, keyless entry and push-button start, 18-inch alloys, leather seats and a powered rear tailgate.

Permanent four-wheel drive is standard on all Outbacks, and the car’s 8.7 inches of ground clearance is enough for almost any off-road trails that you’d care to venture down with baby on board.

What the Outback lacks, relative to the small SUVs, however, is a high seating position.

Even though higher than most cars, the Outback doesn’t tower over traffic like an SUV or crossover but the advantage of that is that the Outback drives like a car and you don’t have to climb into it.

Provided as standard on all Lineartronic Outbacks, Subaru’s brilliant ‘EyeSight’ safety technology uses two cameras mounted in front of the rear view mirror to detect vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and other potential hazards ahead, and includes pre-collision braking control and precollision throttle management, adaptive cruise control and lane departure and sway warning.

The new Outback offers a choice of two engines. A 2.0-litre turbo-diesel produces 148bhp while the 2.5-litre petrol unit creates 163bhp. The diesel engine comes with either a six-speed manual transmission or Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT transmission, but the petrol engine will only have the CVT gearbox.

While it is reasonably safe to say that drivers of this particular model won’t be too

bothered about the economic standards achieved, the car can nevertheless produce between 20 and 25 mpg in the city and between 25 and 33 on the open road, obviously depending on the engine size of your choice.

Price wise, Subaru - to their credit - have managed to keep the new version in the same price bracket as the outgoing model with the entry-level 2.0D SE Outback costing £27,995. The range-topping 2.5i SE Premium Lineartronic, meanwhile, will set you back £31,495.

It’s a bit hard to see how the minimal changes to the exterior will attract a great deal of new custom for the Outback, but the overall improvements will certainly please true enthusiasts and Subaru will probably be pretty confident that they will continue to retain their already wide customer base.

here are very few series around these days that one genuinely looks forward to with anticipation but the latest four-episode run of ‘Vera’ was certainly one of them.

Whoever chose Brenda Blethyn to play the part of the somewhat cantankerous and unconventional woman detective should be applauded for finding an actress totally capable of adopting both the North East persona and the accent as cleverly as she has. And that despite being born into a working class home in Kent and eventually ending up living in London.

We shouldn’t really be surprised at her ability, however, as her impressive list of awards and nominations include two Academy Award nominations, two SAG Award nominations, two Emmy Award nominations and three Golden Globe Award nominations, winning one.

In addition, she has won a BAFTA, an Empire Award and a Golden Lion and has earned a Theatre World Award and both a Critics’ Circle Theatre Award and a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for her theatrical work.

A wonderful actress who has achieved everything - and I’m sure she won’t mind

me saying this - on pure ability and not on Hollywood style looks!

Based on a series of books by Anne Cleeves, ‘Vera’ features as its central character Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope of the fictional Northumberland & City Police.

She’s a woman who lives alone, is obsessive about her work and - judging by her appearance - doesn’t have an ounce of vanity in her personality.

Her wicked sense of humour and her aggressive management style suggest she’s not trying to win popularity contests either, but her colleagues obviously respect her wonderful detecting abilities.

The series is filmed in the North East and often features the contrasting magnificence of the wonderful countryside with the darkness of other parts of the North East but it’s nevertheless a great advert for the area.

Storylines are excellent and the acting from every member of the cast is impressive. making it a series that simply has to be watched. If you haven’t actually seen it (where’ve you been?) take advantage of ‘Catch Up TV’ and do yourself a real favour.

A TRULY FANTASTIC EFFORT WHATEVER THE END RESULT!

A

s you read this you’ll be a lot closer to knowing Boro’s eventual fate than I do as I’m writing it. Due to early deadlines I only know that with just 2 games to go we are sitting third with only a point separating us from Watford and just goal difference preventing us from passing Bournemouth after a weekend that featured what seemed like the longest second half any of us have ever had to sit through (at Norwich, of course.)

‘Boro have been simply magnificent since the Watford defeat and have done absolutely everything we could have asked of them. And even if their efforts in the remaining two games don’t turn out to be enough we should all be incredibly proud of what Aitor Karanka and his team have achieved this season.

It would be easy to start looking back at ‘what might have been’ at this point and blame incidents like the ludicrous goal given to Blackburn or the ridiculously one sided game against Leeds where we came away with nothing, but to be fair the real truth is that we weren’t good enough on the day to take points - or even a point - out of the Bournemouth and Watford away games.

A draw at either would have meant our fate was now in our own hands. A win from either would have virtually put us up. A win at both and we would now be Champions. But that’s all water under the bridge and we just have to pray that the fantastic performances of the

last couple of weeks can be repeated against Fulham and Brighton and that one of the other two - or preferably both - draw or lose one of their remaining games. If that doesn’t happen we can start planning for the play-offs and - let’s be honest - the lottery they represent.

If ever a man deserved to have his enormous investment in both time and money come to fruition it’s Steve Gibson. We have all shared the disappointment he must have felt over the past five or six seasons but all we have had to invest is the entrance money that gives us - in a lot of cases anyway - entertainment and the pride of supporting our club. To him it has to be much more than that but he hopefully realises that despite the sometimes dire performances under Southgate, Strachan and Mowbray no-one has ever turned on him as other club’s fans have with the likes of

We all know how much the club means to him and perhaps my favourite match-day poster that first came to light at The Millennium Stadium is the one that simply shows a picture of Steve and the caption ‘One of Us.’ But it’s not only Steve that deserves a great end to the season. Our away support this year has been easily the best in the league and all those thousands of fans who have travelled up and down the country week after week have genuinely put all those ‘stay-away’ fans who will almost certainly return if we make the Promised Land to shame. What is even more admirable is that there is never an ounce of trouble from our away support and their contribution is universally admired by home support everywhere.

So, for your sake and for Steve’s I have already said a thousand prayers for a satisfactory end to a fabulous season. If anyone up there is listening let me thank you in anticipation!

APPLE CRUMBLE CHEESECAKE INGREDIENTS 150g plain flour, 50g caster sugar 100g butter (diced), 1 egg yolk 1/2 tsp lemon rind 25g desiccated coconut (toasted) 2-3 tbsp iced water Crumble topping 120g plain flour, 35g caster sugar 80g butter (diced), 100g pecans (toasted and chopped) Utensils: 9 inch spring form cake tin.

FILLING: A) 3 green apples, 50g caster sugar 1 tsp lemon rind, 2 tbsps lemon juice 1/8 tsp cinnamon powder, 1 tsp plain flour 2 tbsp raisins 100g macadamia nuts (chopped and toasted)

B) 500g cream cheese (at room temperature) 100g caster sugar, 1 tbsp lemon juice 30g cornflour, 250ml UHT whipping cream 3 eggs (beaten)

METHOD: 1) Preheat oven at 180 degree celcius.

Place flour and sugar in a mixing bowl.

Add in butter and mix until mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add in egg yolk, lemon rind and coconut. Add in water a little at a time until mixture binds. Press mixture into a 9 inch loose base cake tin. Prick holes with a fork.

Bake in oven for 12-15 minutes.

2) Filling: Peel and core apples, cut into pieces. Place remaining filling (A) in a pan. Cook over low heat until thickened. Set aside. Reduce over heat

3) Beat cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Add in sugar, lemon juice and cornflour and beat until creamy. Add in the cream. Add in eggs until combined.

5) Pour half the cheese mixture onto the baked base. Spread the apple filling and sprinkle with macadamia nuts. Top with the remaining cheese mixture.

6) Sprinkle topping to cover the surface of the cheese filling. Bake in water bath for one hour. Turn off oven and leave cake in oven for another half an hour.

Remove cake from oven and leave to cool. Refrigerate until set before serving.
