A small incision is made, and a tiny camera, known as an arthroscope, is inserted, allowing surgeons to view the joint on a screen and address problems with precision. This procedure is beneficial for various knee injuries, including torn ligaments, misaligned patella, torn meniscus, cartilage issues, and more. The preparation involves medications and fasting, while anesthesia options include local, regional, or general anesthesia.

During the procedure, sterile saline is pumped into the knee to improve visibility. The surgeon utilizes the arthroscope to explore the joint, possibly making corrections with small instruments. Risks, though rare, encompass bleeding, infection, and complications associated with anesthesia. Specific to knee arthroscopy, there’s a risk of blood clot formation, joint infection, stiffness, or injury to knee structures.

Recovery from knee arthroscopy is relatively swift. Most patients return home on the same day with instructions to use ice packs, elevate the leg, and change dressings to reduce swelling and pain. Follow-up appointments and prescribed exercises help with a full recovery.
