THE MAGIC OF POTTSVILLE
Bookmarking the southern end of the scenic Tweed Coast is a once-sleepy village where locals greet each other by name and community spirit runs deep. Now humming with energy, Pottsville is home to thriving businesses and families seeking a slice of paradise. As the birthplace of LOCALE Magazine, this picturesque town is also the wellspring of inspiration that drives us to capture the beauty and wonder of regional living.
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER

HISTORY
Families have long been drawn to Pottsville’s idyllic location, perfectly situated between the Gold Coast, Byron Bay and the lush Tweed hinterland. Set on the banks of the sparkling Mooball Creek, Pottsville is a town rich in history and natural beauty. Originally a tea tree swamp within the Bundjalung Nation, its abundant resources - fish, shellfish and diverse wildlife – sustained and fostered strong connections among neighbouring Indigenous communities for generations.
In the 1920s, Archibald “Bill” Potts and his wife, May, acquired 54 acres here, naming their home overlooking the creek “Elanora”- now Pottsville’s enviable beachfront avenue. While the town was first known as Potts Point, the name was later updated to avoid confusion with its Sydney counterpart, officially establishing Pottsville’s distinct identity on the Tweed Coast.
Today, Pottsville retains its charm, honouring its historical roots while embracing newcomers who share a passion for coastal living.
STAY
For those coming to visit, Pottsville offers a range of welcoming accommodations. Tweed Holiday Parks operates two familyfriendly sites with options for camping, Surfari-style glamping and cosy cabins. For a more traditional stay, Pottsville Beach Motel, features updated amenities, a pool and a convenient location in the heart of town. All accommodations are close to the beach, the creek and the shops, perfect for soaking up Pottsville’s laid-back coastal atmosphere.
EAT
A stroll through town reveals a thriving dining scene that has blossomed in recent years. Pipit, the town’s Hatted restaurant, has placed Pottsville firmly on the culinary map, drawing foodies from all over for a taste of Chef Ben Devlin’s innovative, locally inspired dishes that celebrate the region’s seasonal produce.

Across the road, Betel Delicate, a long-standing favourite, satisfies Thai cravings with authentic plates bursting with flavour, while the small-but-mighty, Izakaya Potts serves up Japanese fare that rivals the region’s best for freshness and taste. For casual vibes, the Pottsville Sports Club draws in the bowling crew and hosts a raucous Thursday night trivia, while Baker and Farmer is the spot for Friday afternoon margaritas. Café by day, bar by night, it’s our team’s go-to for celebrating each new LOCALE issue hitting the stands.
For a more laid-back bite, the town’s two pizzerias and fish and chip shops are tried-and-true Friday night staples. Grab your takeaway and head up to the headland for one of life’s simple pleasures - enjoying a relaxed meal, and maybe even a whale sighting, under the sunset’s painted sky.
Cafés are the lifeblood of small towns and Pottsville doesn’t disappoint. Corner Stop, Two Brothers and Black Drop buzz each morning with regulars catching up over sticky chai’s or perfectly brewed flat whites. Newer to the scene, Hummingbird Bakery & Gelato tempts even the most disciplined with its fresh-out-of-the-oven baked treats, like loaded Nutella-filled doughnuts, that have the weekend crowds queueing for something sweet.

PLAY
Pottsville may not be a shopping mecca, but that’s how we like it. Dune Designs and Homewares - the town’s sole boutique - satisfies our fashion needs, drawing both locals and tourists with a curation of our favourite labels.
Outdoors, however, is where Pottsville shines. With abundant natural beauty and recreational spaces, it calls to lovers of the sun and sea. Surf culture is strong here, with local beaches offering reliable waves year-round and surfers savouring the beauty of less crowded breaks along the coastline.
Fishing is also a local favourite; Mooball Creek, a prime spot for catching flathead, whiting and bream, is accessible even without a boat. The creek’s tidal nature making it ideal for wading and fishing from sandbanks, while cheeky pelicans wait nearby for an expectant feed. Nature lovers also have much to explore - from the serene walking trails of Pottsville Environmental Park to birdwatching spots along the coastline.
Ambrose Brown Park is a hub for community gatherings, especially during summer. Here, families barbecue under shady trees, kids play in the playground and community events are hosted. On any given evening, you’ll also find the local sports fields alive with rugby, cricket, soccer and tennis, while the community hall thrums with dancers. And every second Sunday, the town comes together for Pottsville Markets, a lively buzz of stalls offering fresh produce, crafts and unique wares, capturing the town’s warm community vibe.
Just a short drive away, Hastings Point Headland offers yet another beautiful vista. With views that stretch up and down the coastline, this spot has called to manyHollywood filmmakers included - for its glorious outlook and tropical vibes. Popular with the campervan crowd, surfers scouting for waves, and picnicking families gathering to take in (in my humble opinion) one of the country’s most stunning outlooks.
But want to know one of Potty’s best kept secrets? It’s the magic of the estuary - fondly called “The Creek” by locals. A crystal-clear oasis where the white sand and turquoise waters invite hours of relaxation and play. At high tide, the creek becomes a postcard-worthy paradise, alive with kayakers, paddle boarders and locals floating along the refreshing current - a perfect remedy for humid summer days.
In Pottsville, life isn’t complicated; it’s a tapestry of beach days, community spirit, and simple pleasures that remind us of what matters most.

BLUESFEST TAKE A BOW
As the '80s electro scene gave way to the grunge era, a fledgling blues event in Byron Bay welcomed legends like Charlie Musselwhite and Canned Heat to its modest stage. Over the next 35 years, that humble gathering transformed into Bluesfest—a globally celebrated institution. Now, in April 2025, the festival is gearing up for what could be its final act, promising its most electrifying lineup yet. Amid the excitement, a bittersweet question lingers: is this truly Bluesfest’s last bow?
WRITTEN BY LISSIE TURNER
Spread across 300 acres, Bluesfest’s sprawling stages will host over 200 performances during five unforgettable days. For locals, the festival is far more than a musical event—it’s a vivid thread in the fabric of life, weaving together creativity, connection and unforgettable memories.
This region isn’t just a backdrop to Bluesfest; it’s a creative powerhouse, with more artists per capita than nearly anywhere else in Australia. For rising star Budjerah, a proud Coodjinburra artist, making his Bluesfest debut on home turf in 2025 is a longheld dream come true. “I grew up listening to blues and soul music,” he says. “Since me and my cousins, who are my band, were little, we dreamt of being on the Bluesfest stage. It’s held on our traditional Bundjalung country, so it’s extra special to us.”
Budjerah’s connection to the festival runs deep. “For my 16th birthday, I saw Lauryn Hill perform. It was epic—she’s one of my musical heroes. That experience made me dream bigger. I spent a lot of my early days practicing and working hard, hoping one day to play at the festival. If I didn’t get this gig, it would have been a huge regret. It’s been on my list forever!”

For veteran performer Ash Grunwald, Bluesfest stands as the pinnacle of musical experiences. Preparing for his eleventh appearance, he reflects on its unique magic. “It’s the Holy Grail,” he says. “The mix of internationals with the cream of the Australian scene is unmatched. Playing to 10,000 cheering fans is an experience you’ll never forget.”
Bluesfest is more than just music—it’s a living archive of stories. Lifelong friendships have formed, careers have been ignited, and soul-stirring moments have left a lasting impact. Locals speak of marking time by the legends who’ve headlined and the serendipitous sightings of icons at local beaches or cafés. Beyond its star-studded lineup, Bluesfest is renowned for its on-stage spontaneity. “The collaborations!” exclaims Bay FM presenter Karen Eivers. “Artists calling each other up on stage— it’s electrifying, and you know how lucky you are to witness it. The joy is contagious.”
Excitement is already building for this year’s lineup, hailed as the festival’s most spectacular yet. Headliners like the legendary Crowded House, hip-hop icons Hilltop Hoods, and acclaimed singer-songwriter Vance Joy lead the charge, joining a dynamic mix of festival icons and rising stars. This blend of nostalgia and fresh talent promises an unforgettable experience. And when Hilltop Hoods take the main stage, it’s bound to be one of the most unforgettable moments in this region’s massive musical history.
For Byron Bay Mayor Sarah Ndiaye, Bluesfest’s impact extends far beyond the music. As a former volunteer and lifelong fan, she speaks passionately about its cultural and economic significance. “Bluesfest is a training ground for so many artists and creatives,” Ndiaye says. “From SAE students learning lighting to locals working in every area of the festival—it’s a platform for emerging talent and a chance to hone skills, get inspired, and make lifelong memories.”
Economically, Bluesfest has been a powerhouse, contributing over $775 million to Byron Shire and more than $1.1 billion to NSW inbound tourism. Yet, Ndiaye emphasises its deeper legacy as a cultural incubator and community builder. Although her personal highlights include unforgettable moments, like being pulled from the crowd to sing with Taj Mahal in 1994 and, more recently, Michael Franti, she says, “It’s actually the friendships with fellow volunteers that makes Bluesfest impossible to miss.”
While the excitement for 2025 is palpable, the possibility that this could be Bluesfest’s swan song adds a bittersweet edge. When COVID silenced the music scene in 2020, the festival’s absence left a void. Its triumphant return in 2022 brought a wave of collective joy. Karen Eivers vividly recalls Paul Kelly’s opening performance of “Finally Something Good,” and the emotion that followed. “There were tears from both artists and the crowd. Paul wiped his eyes and said, ‘Finally, we’re here. Finally, something good.’ The crowd roared—it was a moment of shared relief and joy.”
This year, as fans prepare to celebrate what could be Bluesfest’s final bow, there’s a shared sense of gratitude for all it has brought to the community—and a lingering hope that this isn’t truly the end. Whether Bluesfest continues beyond 2025 or not, its legacy is undeniable. It has forged lifelong friendships, launched careers, and brought the world’s best music to the Northern Rivers’ doorstep.
As the festival gears up for its biggest event yet, the energy is electric, the memories are cherished, and the community’s love for Bluesfest burns brighter than ever. When the final notes fade into the Byron Bay night, one truth will remain: Bluesfest is more than just a festival. It’s a celebration of music, community, and the creative spirit that defines Northern Rivers. Whatever the future holds, the magic of Bluesfest will echo long after the stages go dark.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO TREV
One of the greatest Ironman champions of all time, the Gold Coast’s Trevor Hendy dominated the sporting world in the 80s and 90s. But it was a shift in mindset - from winning at all costs to winning on all levelsthat brought him the greatest fulfilment. These days Trev is all about motivating and inspiring others to reach their own goals.
WRITTEN BY ALISON BONE
For a supreme athlete, crowned six times as Australian Ironman champion and four times world champion, Trev Hendy is surprisingly humble. He is also seriously inspiring, which is why he thrives as a motivational speaker, retreat facilitator, life coach and personal trainer. Switching from Ironman events to kayaking in a quest to chase gold at the 2000 Olympics, Trev found the victories started to feel hollow. “I realised that I liked people more than I liked winning, and suddenly the gold medal didn’t mean anything,” he says. Retiring from professional sports in 1998, he never looked back.
The father of four, Trev still lives on the Gold Coast, with his wife Jo. His seven-year stint as president of the Surfers Paradise Lifesaving Club, a role that he describes as “a really beautiful opportunity to give back,” ended in 2023, but the club that he has been a member of for 48 years is still close to his heart. As is the Gold Coast itself, “It’s the perfect environment to live the type of life and lifestyle that I want to live, and to feel the feelings that I want to feel,” he says.
So Trev, your priorities have clearly changed since the days when you dominated the sporting world. What gets you out of bed now?
I often say that there are no ordinary moments, that life actually has magic available all the time, it’s just whether we're in the right frequency to receive it. It’s like searching for a radio station you know, am I tuning into it or am I in the static? I love waking up and going, what can I do today to get more of those radio stations lined up, and remove more of the static for both myself and for others. These days it all revolves around helping other people tap into the magic.
One of the ways you do that is through your Breath and Breakthrough Retreats, can you tell us about that?
I do a lot of personal development work, and along with Kane Johnson - former AFL captain for Richmond, and Mark Kluwer, a breath specialist who worked with Wim Hof for quite a while, we’ve been running off grid men's retreats. We help men get from their heads to their hearts, basically to get back from all their struggles in life, open themselves up and get back out into the world. We mostly do men’s retreats, but they have been so popular that we are now doing some women’s and mixed retreats as well.
So, what led you to facilitate men’s retreats?
When I was coming through sports everything was about mind and body. You know, if you can really train your mind to train your body, you can achieve anything. But I got to a point where my mind was so strong that I was kind of walled off. Then,
suddenly my body was falling apart, everything was crumbling and I realised there were other things that I needed to learn. Like that it wasn't just about body and mind, it was also about soul. I had to learn to become vulnerable and when I did that, I had this incredible turnaround in my life and that is something I wanted to help other people with.
“I REALISED THAT MY PURPOSE IN LIFE WAS CONNECTING WITH HUMAN POTENTIAL, RATHER THAN HUMAN PERFORMANCE, AND MADE THE SHIFT FROM WINNING AT ALL COSTS TO WINNING ON ALL LEVELS.”
But what it ultimately came down to, was this calling with my two great mates, Kane and Mark. We could talk about anything and be super emotional with each other; and it's like, wow, other people don't have what we have. Other men don't get to talk about their feelings and release them and move on from them. In fact, a lot of them are self-medicating. They’re gambling, drinking, taking drugs, suffering with depression and withdrawal, and there's a lot of suicide. We hold a really good space, and have an amazing record of, I would say 100% of people going, ‘my life just completely changed’.
You have a mantra, ‘the conditions are always perfect,’ can you expand?
When I first started competing I saw that the winner gets the girl, the prizes, the respect. So I decided I'm going to have to be the winner. And it was amazing because that tapped me into a power and into my potential. But then I decided I didn’t just want to win, I wanted to perfect the Ironman race, so I needed to be able to do it in any conditions and in whatever order was

drawn out of the hat. With that shift in mindset, I was able to say to myself, the conditions are always perfect, the order is perfect. That allowed me to embrace the conditions rather than resist them. In two years, I went from never winning a race to world champion.
And how do you relate that to life beyond the ocean?
By embracing what's happening, rather than hoping for things to be a certain way, you bring out the best in yourself. Sometimes it's beautiful here on the Gold Coast and it seems like paradise. Other days it's a howling cyclone, or whatever it is. But the conditions are always perfect, the only question is, what are they perfect for? So some days, the conditions in life teach you forgiveness, patience or determination. Or they may teach self-love, or to be selfless and look after someone else.
Ultimately, when I lost my way in life and got into some pretty dark places, the conditions were still perfect. Because I had to learn that it was more about the heart than it was about the head - it was about my emotions and the things that I’d suppressed and run away from. And I had to go back and look at that original feeling that I wasn't good enough unless I was the winner. From there, everything served its ultimate purpose, which was to teach me about what was really important in life.

CREATING RIPPLES OF CHANGE
The Northern Rivers is often described as ‘paradise’ with its beautiful beaches, its hinterland forests and mountains. Visitors flock here to experience the region’s natural beauty and spirit, and thousands of people move from the cities to make this place their home.
But as anyone who lives here knows, it’s not a paradise for everyone. Sadly, the Northern Rivers is also home to high rates of domestic violence and homelessness; with over 1,300 domestic violence-related assaults reported in 2023, and more than 2,300 women seeking support from homelessness services.
Confronting these challenges can seem immense, but the Northern Rivers Community Foundation (NRCF) is stepping up to make a difference. Among its impactful initiatives, the Women’s Giving Circle is empowering local women and girls and driving real change across the community.
Founded in 2003, NRCF is a communitybased philanthropic organisation that connects donors to critical causes across the Northern Rivers. Working alongside over 350 grassroots organisations, NRCF provides vital support for social and environmental initiatives. With transparency and accountability at its core, NRCF ensures donations go where they’re most needed. The Women’s Giving Circle, one of its standout initiatives,
leverages collective giving to tackle the issues facing women and girls in the region.
“The beautiful thing about the Women’s Giving Circle is that we’re a collective of women from all walks of life, united by a heartfelt wish to support positive change in our communities,” says Amy Colli, Coordinator of the Giving Circle. “When you see the statistics, it can feel overwhelming, but giving together amplifies our impact and eases that feeling of helplessness.”
The Women’s Giving Circle operates through a simple yet powerful collective giving model. Each member donates $1,000 annually (or $20 weekly) to a pooled fund, with half going directly to projects that support women and girls in need. The other half is invested in the Northern Rivers Women’s Fund, an endowment ensuring resources for future projects.
More than financial support, the Giving Circle creates a space for women to connect, learn, and make a difference together. At its annual Pitch Night, local nonprofits present their programs and members vote to determine how the pooled funds are allocated. Each member’s vote holds equal weight, giving everyone a voice in deciding which initiatives receive support.
At the recent 2024 Pitch Night at the Brunswick Picture House, the room buzzed with energy as over $50,000 in funding was awarded. “There’s so much love in the room when we come together,” Amy reflects. “Knowing you are part of something bigger is incredibly powerful.”
The true impact of the Women’s Giving Circle is seen in the lives it changes, providing meaningful support to women and girls facing adversity. This year’s Pitch Night finalists included Haus of Armour, Women Up North and Human Nature Adventure Therapy. Each organisation received funding, with the major grant of $35,000 awarded to Human Nature Adventure Therapy’s ‘Empower Her’ project.
The ‘Empower Her’ project is set to provide 90 therapeutic sessions for young women aged 14-18 who have experienced trauma from sexual or domestic violence. “When young women experience trauma in their childhood, their dreams and their passions and their brilliance just get squashed by their inability to heal that trauma,” says Jen Parke of Human Nature Adventure Therapy. “There's a whole lot of understanding now about if you invest in women, then you truly invest in our society… This is where change can happen.”
The other finalists, Haus of Armour and Women Up North, are also
addressing critical needs. Haus of Armour will offer styling sessions for women who have survived family violence, helping them rebuild confidence and reclaim their identity. Women Up North will conduct ‘Empowering Self-Defence’ workshops, equipping women with mental, emotional, and physical resilience.
“I love the idea that it's women getting behind women, supporting women and really addressing the need in the community of where women are being affected,” says Haus of Armour’s Kate Jackson. “We need that.”
For the 130+ members of the Women’s Giving Circle, the most rewarding part is witnessing firsthand the lives transformed by their collective efforts. The Giving Circle represents more than philanthropy; it’s a movement of women creating waves of change—empowering each other and building a more connected, resilient community.
“We’re not just addressing immediate needs,” says Amy. “We’re helping build a future where everyone in the Northern Rivers has the chance to thrive. Our goal is to foster resilient communities where people have the support they need to live fulfilling lives.”
The Women’s Giving Circle demonstrates the transformative power of collective giving. When women come together to support one another, their impact grows exponentially. Every dollar donated, every vote cast, and every story shared contributes to changing lives in the Northern Rivers. For those looking to make a meaningful contribution, the Giving Circle offers an inspiring path forward.

BOTTOMS UP
Scenic drives on country roads, a sun-bleached Californian surf mecca and a fiercely protective Australian bird. What do they all have in common? They’re namesakes and inspiration for some of the Northern Rivers’ most exciting new breweries and distilleries. Among them, you’ll find old mates brewing boozy kombucha, a female-led distillery shaking up the status quo, and a Byron Bay favourite that’s enjoying an aboveaverage amount of ‘buzz’.
WRITTEN BY CHRIS ASHTON
BIRDS OF ISLE
Murwillumbah is a key hub in the Northern Rivers’ sugarcane industry, with trucks bouncing on dusty roads hauling freshly harvested cane stalks common sights from June to December. Naturally, this homegrown bounty also makes the town prime territory for another hot commodity: rum.
Several distilleries, including Husk and Cabarita Spirits, are turning local cane juice into liquid gold, and amassing a devoted following in the process. One of the latest is Birds of Isle, from Chanel Melani and Sally Carter, which is not only adding a female perspective to a typically male-dominated industry but embracing one of the region’s lesser-known Indigenous ingredients.

Dotted along Australia’s East Coast, the Bunya Pine is recognisable for its bullet-like shape and mammoth pinecones, the latter regularly tipping scales at 20kg. And inside, a hundred or more smooth, buttery-flavoured nuts, which act as the signature element in Birds of Isle’s debut rum.
This first release, a light and dry column-distilled rum with notes of burnt sugar, roasted nuts and creme brulee was unveiled in December 2023, while their second will emerge in around 18 months, as a three year-aged rum.
Favourite way to drink: On ice, or in a classic daiquiri of Bunya nut rum, fresh lime and some simple syrup. birdsofisle.com.au
BYRON BAY SPIRITS CO.
No, Byron Bay Spirits Co. is not new. The distillery from Luca Bolzoni and Marshal Rubinstein has been concocting spirits and ready-made cocktails since 2019, many of them gracing shelves in bars, restaurants and bottle shops around the region.
Though best known for honey vodka, gin and liqueur, all of which were inspired by the owners past careers working with bee keeping innovators Flow Hive, their full lineup including a naturally flavoured triple sec, arancello and delightful dry gin is worth diving into.
What is newsworthy, however, is the brand-new cocktail venue: Byron Bay Spirits Lounge, which opened in October 2024. Years in the making, the lounge and adjacent distillery and canning facility are a natural progression for the brand, having long outgrown their original distillery.

Housed in the appropriately named Hive precinct of Byron Arts & Industry Estate, next door to Stone & Wood, visitors can swing by for tastings and tours, enjoy lunchtime or afterwork cocktails, and leave with a bottle or two under their arm, of course. It’ll soon offer cocktail masterclasses, alongside distilling and liqueur-making classes.
Favourite drinks: Limoncello and Coffee Liqueur, both created in honour of Bolzoni’s grandparents. byronbayspirits.com
VENTURA BREWING
From school friends to travel buddies and now owners of a brewery, Dom Hurley and Shanu Walsh from Ventura Brewing have a lot of history. Now, they’re creating an exciting future, with the addition of a tap room for good times, drinks from the source, and enjoying the sunset over Wollumbin-Mount Warning taking their business to the next level.
Founded in Shanu’s garage in 2018, Ventura walks a different path from most craft breweries. For starters, there are no crisp lagers or fruity IPAs here. Instead, it’s all about boozy kombucha, made using a natural double fermentation (not spiked with alcohol, as with others in the market) and infused with fruits, herbs and botanicals.
“It’s a clean and fresh alternative to drinking beer, wine or cider,” explains Hurley. “It’s also lighter on your stomach than beer, as it doesn’t have all the grain that’s found in beer,” meaning they’re gluten free.

The Murwillumbah industrial estate tap room – open since August 2024 – has quickly found its tribe, thanks to its chilled vibe, leafy courtyard and impressive outlook over the cane fields, backed by a delicious array of up to 12 seasonal, limited release and core drinks.
Favourite drink: Lavender Lemonade, a limited release that’s been upgraded to the core range.

SPANGLED DRONGO
The name ‘Spangled Drongo’ is an evocative one. A generation of Aussies will likely hear the voice of TV staple Home and Away’s Alf Stewart when they read it. But it’s not an insult – it’s a bird, one known for its protective nature and willingness to take on predators twice its size.
It’s also the namesake of a craft brewery in Murwillumbah, just around the bend from Ventura, and a rather fitting one at that, given the owners are independents ‘taking on the big guys'. It works with the branding too, which co-founder and brewer Brian Kiss von Soly describes as “very punk rock, skating and antiestablishment, but with a heart of gold.”
Cutting his teeth at well-known breweries like Balter and Stone & Wood, Brian’s passions are beer and sustainability, and Spangled Drongo combines both. A percentage of all beers sold goes to Australian Wildlife Conservancy, which works to protect native animal species and the habitats in which they live.
Since relocating to their industrial estate location in June 2023, following the devastating 2022 floods that damaged their original downtown Murwillumbah venue, the boys have been brewing a range that includes a Pale Ale and a Lager, with plans to introduce a third beer in the new year. A tasting room is also in the works.
Favourite drink: With just two beers in the current range, you can’t go wrong. spangleddrongo.com.au
WINDING ROAD DISTILLING CO.
“We’re always tinkering; always doing things”, says Mark Awad of Winding Road Distilling Co. who, alongside wife Camille, has been producing small-batch whiskey, rum and gin from their humble distillery in Tintenbar, near Ballina, since 2017. And they must be doing something right, given the glittering trophies and awards now lining the office shelves.
On that noble list are accolades for the Coastal Cane Pure Single Rum, made from first-press Northern Rivers cane juice and awarded Best Rum at the 2023 Australian Distilled Spirits Awards, and the highly coveted Hinterland Single Malt Whiskey.
As for the constant tinkering, a couple of unique whiskey expressions and a vodka will soon enter the mix, with these imminent arrivals falling under a special ‘50 Mile’ label, as a nod to the radius in which all ingredients were sourced.
Winding Road will also launch a new era with its longawaited tasting room mid next year, which Awad says will be ‘a jewel in the crown for the Northern Rivers’. In the meantime, their spirits can be found online and at local farmers’ markets.
Favourite drink: A Rum Old Fashioned, with simple syrup, angostura bitters and an orange peel garnish.

MARKET DAZE
Over the past decade, our Northern Rivers farmers' markets have seen an undeniable boom - blossoming into thriving community hubs that nourish the body and feed the soul. These markets celebrate the dedication of local farmers and artisans who work tirelessly to bring fresh, vibrant produce to our tables. Supporting them means investing in our local economy and honouring the unique beauty of this region. Markets like Mullumbimby and New Brighton invite us back to a simpler, more connected way of life, where familiar faces and a shared sense of community flourish. As bustling crowds gather each week, it’s clear our local Farmers’ Markets have become cherished places at the heart of Northern Rivers life.
NEW BRIGHTON FARMERS’ MARKET
The river sparkles as you step from your car, then head toward the colour and movement that is the New Brighton Farmers’ Market. In terms of size, this might be the little sister to Mullum’s farmer’s market, but it’s been running for longer, and in its intimacy and cruisy beachside atmosphere, manages to provide an experience every bit as joyous. At its heart, live music flows from a small stage, drawing groups of friends, families, and seated clusters of locals, often with kids dancing in front. Nearby, in the Kiddies’ Plot, children immerse themselves in free arts and crafts activities.
The air is filled with tempting aromas—fresh coffee and hearty breakfasts from Nomadic Kitchen, where former River Café chef Rob de Costanzo whips up silverbeet and ricotta omelettes with sourdough, cauliflower cheese pies, and strawberry galettes. You’ll find Scratch Patisserie’s famous pastries, delicate buckwheat crepes, smoothies, juices and berries to nibble. Crabbes Creek Woodfired offers hearty ancient grain loaves, while Breadicine supplies gluten-free vegan delights. There’s cheeses, artisanal pasta, smoked olives and huge Brunswick River oysters —and that’s before you even reach the produce stalls.
Beyond the market’s central hub are tables for dining and socialising, and a path that leads closer to the river, where tables overflow with bananas, vibrant greens, herbs, and colourful root vegetables. A gentle, salty breeze floats in from the beach, and the lush green oval shimmers nearby. Here, there’s truly all the time in the world.
New Brighton Farmers’ Market is in River Street, New Brighton and is held every Tuesday from 8 – 11am

MULLUMBIMBY FARMERS’ MARKET
Clouds drift lazily above in a bright blue sky; the showground is bathed in sunshine. There’s the bearded hula-hoop man in rainbow colours, tirelessly whirling. On grassy embankments shaded by trees sit groups surrounded by calico bags spilling produce. People everywhere, queuing or wandering or standing in clusters, chatting to stall-holders, the atmosphere unhurried. There’s live music at each end, and shady trees where friends eat and gossip, straw baskets and beards, dreadlocks and tattoos, silver-haired men and women in sandals, and infants in strollers.
A local institution since 2010, the Mullumbimby Farmers’ Market has earned international acclaim, featured in The New York Times and Time Out Magazine. Locally, it’s been recognized as Delicious magazine’s “Most Outstanding Farmers Market in Australia” and has graced the screens of Channel 7’s Sunrise and Destination Flavour. Home to over 70 stalls, it’s a vibrant and fascinating atmosphere – a harmonious mix of hippy and sophistication.
Set out like an alleyway, the main artery takes you from one end to another where you’ll pass produce stalls whose trestle tables groan with seasonal fruit and vegetables and herbs – heirloom tomatoes and exotic mushrooms, leafy greens and berries. Past the pasture raised eggs, you’ll find fresh pasta and dried spices, there’s fermented and native foods, macadamias and briny olives and oozy farmstead cheeses, the jars of mouthwatering smoked fish rillettes, perfect for spreading of course on the chunky loaves of fresh sourdough sold at a nearby stall. And we can’t forget the sticky sweet pastries and sourdough doughnuts – a treat to eat while you wander - perfectly paired with a fresh coffee, juice or Matcha.
Then there are all the food outlets: Taiwanese dumplings, Japanese, Argentinian or French creperie, Indonesian or vegan. From the exotic to the familiar, the culinary world is yours to explore.
Mullumbimby Farmers’ Market is at the Mullumbimby Showgrounds every Friday from 7 – 11am.

LOADS OF LOVE
Beacon Laundry in Bangalow isn’t just a commercial laundry; it’s a social enterprise with a transformative mission. Focused on creating jobs, providing career pathways, and offering a supportive environment, Beacon opens doors for those excluded from mainstream employment. It provides steady work, purpose, and tailored support for individuals facing long-term unemployment, addiction recovery, mental health challenges, and the impact of regional floods. As Mel Sass, a People and Pathways Coordinator, says, “There’s a magic that happens here. People come to work, often struggling or broken, and we watch them come back to life.”
Beacon Laundry operates by a profound motto: “We don’t employ people to do laundry; we do laundry to employ people.” Their goal is to offer not just a job but meaningful work and tailored support to help employees transition to long-term employment. It’s a stepping stone—a stable place where individuals rebuild their lives, develop new skills, and regain confidence. With access to emotional, mental and physical wellbeing programs, and a support team with backgrounds in psychology and social work, employees receive help to overcome barriers, whether related to mental health, addiction recovery, or work-readiness.
Why a laundry? Positioned in a tourismrich area where accommodations constantly need laundry services, Beacon Laundry fills a clear gap in the market. Before its inception, many businesses were sending linens out of the region to Coffs Harbour or Brisbane. Now, Beacon meets local demand while providing
accessible jobs for those facing significant challenges. The best part? There are no barriers to entry – no resume required, no interviews, no reference checks – just a willingness to work and grow.
For many, Beacon Laundry is a lifeline, offering more than just a paycheck. It provides stability, purpose, and a chance to reimagine the future. Through steady work, employees build self-esteem and have time to tackle personal challenges with a compassionate team. The goal isn’t for people to work in the laundry forever but to build confidence and skills needed to move on when they’re ready. Beacon is a stepping stone – providing support and filling gaps along the way.
“WE DON’T EMPLOY PEOPLE TO DO LAUNDRY; WE DO LAUNDRY TO EMPLOY PEOPLE”
The results speak volumes. Less than a year in, there’s already a waitlist to join Beacon’s team. Employees earn fair wages in an environment prioritising personal growth. It’s a win-win: contributing to a local business while reclaiming their lives. As Mel shares, “It’s incredible to see people begin to dream again.”
Beacon’s impact isn’t limited to Bangalow. With the success of this first location, a new laundry has opened in Adelaide, with further expansion planned.
In regions with high unemployment, Beacon provides not just jobs, but hope, empowerment and opportunity. This innovative enterprise proves that
a people-first approach can create powerful results, and seeing individuals thrive is proof of its success.
For those inspired by Beacon’s mission, there are many ways to get involved. Whether through donations, volunteering or partnership, supporting Beacon Laundry means helping people rebuild their lives and take steps toward a brighter future. Visit their website or follow them on Instagram to learn more and join the movement that’s changing lives, one load of laundry at a time.

ESKA
Extending the glamour of Mermaid Beach’s The Oxley 1823, a bustling dining precinct, is its latest eatery, Eska — a homage to the finer things in life. Dishing up sashimi, oysters and caviar alongside champagne and far-too-drinkable cocktails, the seafood bar whips top catches into works of art.
The headliner is the two-tier seafood platter, crammed with oysters, bugs, scallops, prawns, tuna tartare and salmon sashimi, plus there’s a raw station to salivate over and fluffy fish “sandos” that hit the spot. Visitors often take their spoils to go but two-seater tables and an intimate bar overlooking the kitchen facilitate lengthier hang outs.

MIAMI FISH MARKET
A hidden gem in hipster-cool central, Miami Fish Market is a haven for hard-to-source slippery suckers. It’s best known as a supplier for at-home dinner parties — think Western Australian brilliant blue marron, or yellowfish tuna from South West Rocks — but the secret is there’s an oyster and sashimi bar right on site.
The team even throw the odd cameo on the grill, such as pearl meat out of Western Australia’s Kimberly region and abalone skewers. No matter what the guest star is, the menu always impresses.

SWOON-WORTHY STAYS
When it comes to holidaying in the Northern Rivers, forget everything you think you know about vacation rentals. Oceanstays is flipping the script, setting a gold standard that’s as refreshing as a salty dip at Yamba Main Beach. With over 80 properties ranging from beachside bungalows to luxurious penthouses, this isn’t just about a place to sleep—it’s about creating a holiday that dreams are made of.
What sets Oceanstays apart? For starters, their obsession with cleanliness borders on artistic. Every surface gleams and every detail sings of care. And it’s not just about polish—it’s about presence. The Oceanstays Hosties are on a mission to make every guest feel like royalty, with round-the-clock support and a knack for making the extraordinary seem effortless.
The properties themselves? Let’s just say they don’t believe in holding back. Spacious homes kitted out with luxury linens, Leif bathroom products, and kitchens that would make a MasterChef judge swoon are just the start. Whether you’re splurging on a sprawling coastal retreat or opting for a cosy surfer’s hideaway, the experience is consistently elevated—and, dare we say, addictive.
But Oceanstays isn’t content to just provide killer accommodation; they’re also building a movement. Their Instagram account is a treasure trove of wanderlust-worthy images, peppered with high-profile collaborations and irresistible competitions that leave followers double-tapping like mad. Their artist-in-residence program? Absolute genius. Inviting creatives to soak in the coastal vibes and turn them into art has given Oceanstays properties a cultural gravitas that few can match.
And then there’s the “Superhost” status, with glowing reviews across all 80+ properties—a testament to the love and care poured into every guest experience. Guests rave about the personal touches, seamless service, and homes so immaculate you’d think they were straight out of a design magazine.
Of course, none of this would matter if it didn’t come with heart. And Oceanstays has plenty. Their ethos is rooted in connection— connecting guests with unforgettable experiences, stunning
properties, and a region they’ll want to revisit again and again. It’s a refreshingly human touch in a market that can sometimes feel, well, transactional.
So, whether you’re in the mood for a glamorous escape or a laid-back beach retreat, Oceanstays promises a holiday where you don’t just visit the Northern Rivers—you live it, love it, and (probably) Instagram it.

IT’S A DATE
Whether you're celebrating an anniversary, keeping up with a weekly tradition, or taking someone special out for the first time, date night is a cherished ritual for couples. Fortunately, the Northern Rivers offers an abundance of romantic spots where you can celebrate your love.
WRITTEN BY KATE REYNOLDS
From the best steak you’ll ever eat in the heart of Byron, ocean views accompanied by a limoncello in East Ballina, or award-winning food that’s made with love (and seasonal produce) in Carool, get ready to mark your next date night on the calendar. These five hot spots have all the makings of a great night out with your other half. Good food? Tick. Cosy atmosphere? Tick. A little something special? Absolutely.
EMBER, BYRON BAY
If your love language includes smoky, chargrilled wagyu steak that melts in your mouth, then Byron Bay’s Ember will be the ticket to your heart (and location of your next date night). Think sustainably sourced meat seared over hot charcoals for that distinct smoky flavour, paired with a few fresh and zesty sides and a glass of good plonk from Ember’s extensive drinks menu.
Whether you want the works (aka their five-course degustation with matching wines), something tasty off their grill menu or even a carefully crafted tipple in their cocktail lounge, Ember is the perfect backdrop to a foodie-lovers date night.
Perfect for: date nights. Easing into a first date with great vibes, excellent service and mouthwatering dishes. emberbyronbay.com.au
CAPICHE, EAST BALLINA
Italian food, excellent cocktails and sweeping views of the ocean – need we say more? Capiche is where to go when you want a bit of wow-factor. Settle in with one of their banquet menus (with optional wine pairing) or go à la carte and enjoy everything from woodfired bread and zucchini flowers to fresh pasta with ragu and tiramisu.
While there’s no bad time to enjoy Italian food, Capiche is best enjoyed in summer, where a dinner-date is accompanied by a twilight-hued Shelley Beach (preferably with a limoncello in hand). Inspired by seaside Italian living, Capiche is la dolce vita at its finest, right here in the Northern Rivers. You might even spot dolphins and – depending on the time of year – whales while you enjoy your meal.
Perfect for: special occasions and ocean views. Romance 101Med vibes and magical views.

POTAGER, CAROOL
Nothing says romantic like venturing through the lush Tweed hinterland and into the picturesque countryside of Carool. Your destination? A gorgeous paddock-to-plate, multi-awardwinning restaurant by the name of Potager. Here you’ll find everything is crafted with love – from the seasonal menu to the handcrafted tables you’ll sit at, and the handmade plates created by local potters. There’s a five-course tasting menu offering both an omnivore option, as well as a vegan/vegetarian menu, and many of the fruit, veggies and herbs used in their dishes come straight from their own garden. Oh, and they’re a Hatted restaurant, too.
Potager want you to know one thing – that all their food is served with love, and what more could you want in a date-night destination?
Perfect for: summery vibes/impressing your discerning foodie date.

SEFA KITCHEN, BYRON BAY
Tucked away in Byron Bay's Habitat precinct, Sefa Kitchen brings a vibrant taste of the Middle East to the Northern Rivers. If the name rings a bell, that’s because it’s a beloved Bondi staple, and now its crowd-pleasing cuisine has made its way here. Expect a fusion of smoky flavours and bold spices, with a wood-fire oven and open-flame grill at the centre of the action. But if you're hoping for a formal, buttoned-up dinner, think again. Sefa Kitchen is a full-on sensory experience, where you’re encouraged to dig into share platters and fresh manaqeesh bread with your hands. Add some Middle Eastern-inspired cocktails, and you’re in for an unforgettable night.
Perfect for: something a bit different/hands touching while sharing in the rustic fare.

ISOLA WINE BAR, BALLINA
This little wine bar sits right on the waterfront of the Richmond River; blink, and you might miss it. Isola is intimate (yes, that’s code for tiny), making it perfect for date nights where it’s just you, your loved one, and a delicious glass of wine. Because there’s nothing worse when you’re trying to spark up conversation and can’t hear your date talking, right?
Open Wed-Sun, you can pop in for sundowner, snag a seat at the window and watch the pelicans glide across the water, blissing out in the serenity of it all. Or opt for their wine and food-pairing menu; choose between three- and five-course bites at change with the seasons, paired with carefully chosen wines. Isola also doubles as a wine store, so if you enjoy your tipple, you can also take it home with you.
Perfect for: intimate, cosy dates/getting up close. isolawineshop.com

LIQUID GOLD
It’s happy hour somewhere, right? Muddling peak summer ingredients (hello, stone fruit season) together with the finest hard stuff, the Gold Coast’s best bars ripple with expert mixology this time of year. Spanning sunshine-friendly classics and crafty seasonal fusions, the region’s most vibrant cocktails are guaranteed to spark serious holiday vibes. Let us shine a light on the menus worth driving up north for.

CADILLAC SUPPER CLUB
Escape the subtropical heat at Cadillac Supper Club, the southern beaches’ outstanding speakeasy. Just a skip from the surf, the moody venue serves as a hipster-cool, Art Deco-laced homage to the northern hemisphere’s notorious underground restaurants – but there’s nothing dark or dated about the drinks. The Sour teams Yellow Chartreuse and gin with limoncello, while their Long Mac mixes coffee tequila and macadamia liqueur with cold brew.
Palm Beach | cadillacsupperclub.com
JUJU
The once-loved Rubi Red Kitchen and Bar is now Juju, the Gold Coast’s hottest new bar and restaurant. The real magnet, however, is its rooftop cocktail bar, serving a killer roll call of creative concoctions right over the buzz of Mermaid Beach’s
well-trodden bars and eateries. Standout picks include the Spicy Angel with tequila, rockmelon, passionfruit and Midori (a 90s throwback we never knew we needed) and for dialled-up heat, choose the Hottest Juju with chilli mango gin, tequila and watermelon juice.
Mermaid Beach | jujumermaidbeach.com.au
MOUSTACHE
Is it really summer without discovering a new, all-toosmashable margarita? Consider your mission complete at Moustache, a bustling small bar in Mermaid Beach’s village that nails summer classics. Half-rimmed with sea salt, squeezed with fresh lime, crammed with ice cubes and splashed with one of the Gold Coast’s tastiest takes on the crowd-pleasing Tommy’s Margarita, it transports you directly to Mexico’s famed cantinas.
Mermaid Beach | @m.o.u.s.t.a.c.h.e
ROSELLA’S
A long-loved LOCALE favourite across the road from dazzling Burleigh Beach, Rosella’s is the king of imaginative sips and attentive service. Find a cosy booth, pull up a bar stool or grab a table by the road — these drinks will have you floating in no time. The Fantales, a mix of rum, chocolate and caramel, paired with a melt-in-your-mouth home-made ‘Fantale’ choccy, is a no-brainer, while the Jellurgal cocktail, combines gin, bunya nuts, pineapple and passionfruit marigold for a refreshing twist.
Burleigh Heads | rosellasbar.com.au
LARS BAR AND GRILL
There’s magic cooking in the kitchen at Lars Bar and Grill but it’s the shaken and stirred delicacies that bowl us over. Dust off the sand from your bake session at Nobby Beach, just a short stroll down the road, and step inside for elegant thirst-quenchers. Showstoppers like the Beach Side with agave spirit, pineapple juice and Blue Curacao, and the Dragonfruit Martini with gin, watermelon and dragon fruit, scream utter escapism, but our favourite tried-and-tested? The Spatula, adored by the bar crew themselves, mixed with spiced rum, egg and Amero Montenegro for a pillowy light and creamy surge of summer.
Nobby Beach | larsbarandgrill.com.au
KIRRA BEACH HOUSE
Grab a seat in one of the rooftop cabanas and kick your heels up — Kirra Beach House is the city’s most iconic summer destination. And while the views out to Surfers Paradise are jaw-dropping, the cocktail menu is dripping in deliciousness. If you’re blessed with a sweet tooth, the Iced Vovo with coconut tequila, pineapple, berries and strawberry is a dream come true, while The Far Eastside with mango chilli gin and fresh mango is universally irresistible.
Coolangatta | kirrabeachhouse.com
LULU
Let your hair down at Lulu, a rooftop bar in the heart of Surfers Paradise. Famed for its bottomless brunches, staged every Sunday, the rowdy party palace throws high-octane holiday vibes. Think frozen slushie cocktails speckled with rainbow lollies, vividly hued sips dotted with edible flowers and Aperol Spritzes everywhere you look. DJs spin tunes long into the evening so booking an overnight stay is highly advised.

Despite their modern marketing approach, Pottsville Properties remains grounded in values of integrity, trust, and commitment to the local community.
Katie and Shannon’s strong ties to Pottsville provide a deep understanding of the area’s evolving real estate landscape. STYLE GUIDE
Getting dressed is something we do every day, yet some days feel harder than others. Ever stand in front of a full closet and think, “I have nothing to wear,” or “my body has changed; I don’t know what suits me anymore”? You’re not alone. With endless online shopping options, it’s easy to feel discouraged when reality doesn’t match the campaign images. Maybe it’s time to revisit the charm of in-store shopping, where trying on clothes—and getting an objective opinion—can make all the difference.
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
During a recent visit to Byron Bay label Auguste, a brand that understands the power of personal style, I found exactly that. Founded by local Ebony Eagles, Auguste embodies a relaxed yet sophisticated Northern Rivers vibe. With timeless silhouettes and sizes from XS to XXL, pieces are designed for every shape and age. “Our designs are inspired by the beauty that clothing can bring,” says Ebony. “Each piece is thoughtfully crafted to boost confidence and celebrate individuality, capturing that special moment when you truly feel beautiful in what you wear.”
Stepping into the Auguste store, stylists like Lila are there to guide you through their collection with expertise and warmth, helping you uncover pieces that resonate with your individuality. Lila understands that, for many, fashion can feel intimidating, especially as bodies and tastes change over time. “Auguste’s pieces are for everyone,” she assures me. “Style isn’t something you lose with age. It’s about embracing where you are now, making small shifts that still feel authentic. And sometimes,” she explains, “it just takes fresh set of eyes to find what really works.”

Lila’s daily experience seeing the clothes on so many body types means she can often pinpoint what will suit even before the customer does, suggesting subtle tweaks that make a huge difference. Her approach isn’t about changing someone’s look but about enhancing it—like suggesting shorter hemline for us short girls, so we don’t get swamped in fabric.
Auguste’s range is also refreshingly versatile, with pieces that can be mixed, matched and dressed up or down. This thoughtful approach makes Auguste more than just a clothing store. For Ebony, clothing should evoke ease and confidence, designed to flow naturally through life. “I really feel like our designs resonate here because they prioritise comfort and authenticity, blending seamlessly with the relaxed lifestyle of the region. Each piece is crafted to move easily from beach to street, offering effortless sophistication that complements the Northern Rivers’ essence.”
As for Lila and the team at Auguste, the most rewarding part of the job is seeing customers light up when they find something they love. “It’s wonderful to see someone look and feel like themselves in a piece,” she says. This shared sense of accomplishment transforms shopping at Auguste into an experience, helping customers reconnect with their personal style.
Sometimes, dialling down the noise of TikTok trends and Instagram ads is all it takes to rediscover clothing that feels right for you. So next time you feel overwhelmed by endless online choices, disconnected from your style or uncertain about what suits you, head to Auguste for an in-store styling session –it could be just the refresh you need.

COLOUR ME IN
The clothing we wear has immense impact on how we feel and present ourselves. Yet, while fashion trends come and go, there’s a simple way to ensure you feel radiant and self-assured no matter what. LOCALE recently spoke with qualified colour analyst Rachel Turner – AKA Rach The Magpie – about the power of colour and discovering your ‘season.’
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
In decades past, getting your ‘colours done’ was as popular as Tupperware parties. Fast forward, and TikTok has revived the trend for a new generation. For Rach however, colour analysis is more than just a fleeting trend—it’s about understanding the psychology and science of colour’s effect on us. But how does this translate into what we wear and how others see us?
Rach’s journey into colour wasn’t straightforward. After a corporate career, her creative side began to pull her in a new direction. As an accomplished artist, Rach founded Rach the Magpie, inspired by her love for all things shiny and vibrant. But it was her mother’s personal experience with colour analysis that that shifted Rach’s focus.
“My mother, who was a healthcare worker [and wore a uniform] her entire career, struggled with identity after retiring,” Rach explains. “Having her colours done was transformative. She became so much more confident.” This profound change inspired Rach to leave the corporate sector to help others rediscover their confidence through colour.
Rach’s own move from the UK to Byron Bay prompted a similar epiphany. Trying to fit into the coastal aesthetic, she adopted neutral, summery tones but felt disconnected from herself. “I didn’t feel like me,” she laughs. Discovering she was a ‘winter’, a season characterised by bold colours like black, white and hot pink helped her reclaim her sense of self, and she now helps others do the same.
“There’s nothing like seeing someone light up when they find their perfect colour,” Rach explains. Her consultations use fabric drapes to show how different hues interact with skin tones and eye colour, creating what she calls a “visceral reaction.” The right colours enhance natural radiance; the wrong ones can dull it.
“Once you see it, you can’t unsee it,” she adds with a smile.
But Rach’s work isn’t just about appearance—it’s about empowerment. She shares stories of clients who experience shifts in their lives after discovering their power colours. "Some clients say they receive compliments and feel more confident at work just by wearing colours that reflect their true selves," she says.
For many, Rach’s consultations are transformative, changing not only how they look but how they feel. Her warmth and enthusiasm create an uplifting experience, encouraging clients to experiment with their wardrobe. “You don’t have to throw away everything black,” she reassures. “Just start playing with other colours and notice their effect on your energy and interactions.”
By the end of a session, clients often feel ready to embrace a more vibrant self. One client summed it up perfectly: “Rach helped me see I don’t have to hide behind certain colours—I can let myself be seen. I felt challenged, in a good way. Maybe it’s time to let a little more light in.”

EXCAVATE AND EDUCATE
INSPIRING YOUNG MINDS THROUGH HANDS-ON ARCHAEOLOGY

At the beginning of 2024, Virtus Heritage embarked on a mission to ignite curiosity and bring history to life for young learners. Now, the team is proud to introduce Educate, a series of archaeology-themed kits designed for primary school students. These kits offer a rich, interactive experience that reveals the wonders of archaeology and highlights its role in uncovering and understanding our past.
Each kit is crafted sustainably by skilled local artisans, featuring hand-painted wooden artefacts made from upcycled wood. Local craftswoman Codie Craig from Sunlit Folk has carefully designed these pieces to reflect actual archaeological finds, adding authenticity and creativity to classroom learning. The kits are designed for groups of 5-10 students and come with a wooden crate and specialised wooden tools handmade by Grace Gallagher from Little Wriggles, encouraging students to ‘excavate’ artefacts buried in sand and record their findings, mimicking real archaeological fieldwork.
Currently, Excavate and Educate each delving into a unique historical perspective:
• Aboriginal Cultural Heritage: Inspired by Virtus Heritage’s excavation work on a shell midden in East Ballina, this kit immerses students in Aboriginal cultural heritage. It includes artefacts representing species found in middens, along with materials to teach the significance of these items within Aboriginal cultures and histories.
• Maritime Heritage: Focused on maritime archaeology, this kit explores the world of shipwrecks and coastal heritage. Students uncover artefacts related to historical wrecks and learn about the importance of preserving our coastal heritage. The artefacts in this kit are designed as puzzle pieces that students assemble, each revealing important aspects of maritime life and history.
To reinforce learning, each kit is accompanied by a comprehensive lesson plan developed by local educator and Virtus Heritage team member, Caroline Ephraums. The plans align with school curricula, ensuring students gain key insights and educational outcomes. Each kit includes artefact recording sheets, informative posters, and creative activities such as designing badges, completing a maze and colouring pages to keep the fun going after the lesson.
For an enhanced experience, schools can also arrange for a Virtus Heritage archaeologist to lead the lesson, guiding students through the excavation process and sharing firsthand archaeological knowledge.
To bring the Excavate and Educate your classroom, please contact Virtus Heritage at info@virtusheritage.com.au. Let’s inspire students to dig deeper into the stories of the past and foster a lifelong passion for discovery.

Exciting news!
Virtus Heritage now offers educational dig kits, perfect for schools and community groups. These kits come complete with delivery and in-class archaeology resources.
Virtus Heritage is dedicated to making history come alive for the next generation!

TAKE ME TO THE SURF
Set gracefully above Main Beach, The Surf Yamba invites you into a world where thoughtful design meets genuine hospitality. This 12-room boutique hotel delivers a sophisticated coastal escape that captures Yamba’s laid-back charm and natural beauty. Whether you're soaking up panoramic rooftop views or relaxing in beautifully curated ocean-inspired rooms, The Surf provides an experience that is effortlessly luxurious yet refreshingly unpretentious.
Family-owned and operated, the heart of this retreat is Garry, the front-of-house manager. With over 25 years of international hotel experience, Garry personifies the warmth and professionalism that make this hotel special. The Mayne family have holidayed in Yamba for decades and owned The Surf for nearly 15 years.
Originally a 1940s motel, The Surf underwent a striking transformation during the COVID-19 lockdowns. The vision for the new build was brought to life by Sydney’s Design King Company, who were inspired by the graceful lines of 1930s cruise liners. The hotel’s curved architecture and bright white exterior beautifully capture Yamba’s coastal light, while Mediterranean touches – striped awnings, terrazzo tiles, and lush greenery –infuse a sense of timeless elegance. The result is a blend of modern sophistication and coastal charm, seamlessly integrated into Yamba’s picturesque surroundings.
Inside, the rooms feel like blissful retreats with natural textures and soothing ocean hues. Light timbers, seagrass panels, and soft tones create a calming ambiance, while every modern comfort is thoughtfully provided. From the complimentary mini bar stocked with locally sourced treats to organic body products by Leif Australia, The Surf has gone the extra mile to create a memorable stay. The views are the real showstopper, with oceanfront rooms offering indulgent simplicity.
Throughout the hotel, stunning artworks by Elizabeth Barnett and Caroline Walls enhance the spaces, while contemporary breeze blocks catch the sparkling afternoon light. But perhaps the most standout feature of the design, is the utilisation of the expansive rooftop space, which offers panoramic views stretching from Iluka to Angourie. The northern end boasts a heated plunge pool and sun loungers, while the southern end features a cosy clubroom and lush greenery. Guests can enjoy complimentary Allpress coffee, Love teas and Byron Bay cookies, making it an ideal spot to unwind. The telescope for whale watching, adds a touch of magic to the experience.
The rooftop space has become a sought-after venue for intimate gatherings, offering breathtaking views and versatile spaces for special moments. The Surf offers a unique blend of coastal beauty and elegant design, making it a go-to destination for those seeking more than just a holiday.
Location is part of The Surf’s charm. Situated on Queen Street, it’s within walking distance of Yamba’s best cafes, shops, and the iconic Pacific Hotel. Complimentary surfboards, umbrellas, and beach chairs are available for guests, allowing them to dive into the coastal lifestyle with ease. Lekker E-bikes are also offered, making exploring the area even simpler. The hotel’s proximity to everything, while still feeling tucked away, is part of its undeniable appeal.
The Surf Yamba is luxe without feeling pretentious, stylish without feeling showy. It’s a place where every detail has been carefully considered, and yet it all feels effortless. And in a town as blissful as Yamba, what more could you want?

ISLE AWAY
Dreaming of an island holiday? Why head abroad when our own backyard serves up turquoise waters, unspoilt beaches and lush bushland in abundance. Trade long-haul flights for laid-back days, where palm trees sway, whales breach and the ocean sparkles in the sun. Whether you're after a relaxed weekend or an adventure-packed family getaway, paradise is just a ferry ride away. LOCALE went to explore two of our own island destinations and discovered you could have all the magic of an overseas holiday, without leaving the country.
DISCOVER TANGALOOMA
Looking for a tropical getaway with all the serenity of Fiji or Bali but without the passport dramas and airport chaos? Tangalooma Island Resort on Moreton Island offers just that, only two hours from the Gold Coast and a short 75-minute ferry ride from Brisbane. Locale’s publisher, Karen, recently enjoyed a three-night mini-escape here with her daughter, discovering a paradise that felt worlds away from everyday life.
WRITTEN BY KAREN KINNERSLY
The adventure begins at Brisbane's ferry terminal. If you’re not in a 4WD, the resort offers secure parking, making the ferry ride feel like the true start of your holiday. The weather was spectacular, and we were assured by the friendly resort manager that, "It never rains at Tangalooma.” We were ready for a good dose of vitamin D.
As Moreton Island comes into view, the sight of the towering sand dunes, stretching as far as the eye could see, is awe-inspiring. This third-largest sand island is wild, pristine, and spectacular.
Our accommodation—a hotel suite facing the bay—offered uninterrupted views of the deep blue water. Every morning, we enjoyed coffee on our balcony, the peaceful surroundings setting the perfect holiday tone. Tangalooma caters to all types of travellers, from families to couples, with various room styles from resort units to bungalow villas.
Booking island activities early was a top tip, so we signed up for an ATV quad bike adventure, snorkelling at the Tangalooma Wrecks, and parasailing. The options for activities are endless –from sand tobogganing on the dunes to wildlife tours, sunset cruises, and glass-bottom kayaks to marvel at the reef’s marine life. Whether you’re into thrill-seeking or laid-back beach lounging, Tangalooma has something for everyone.
Our first adventure—ATV quad biking—was an adrenaline rush. We zoomed along sandy trails, taking in the island’s sweeping views and elevated vantage points. After a quick safety briefing, we spent 45 adrenaline-packed minutes zipping through dunes and zooming along the beach. For an extra shot of relaxation, lounging by one of the resort's two pools was the perfect counterbalance to our high-octane fun. With the sun warming our skin and the ocean in the distance, we were living the island dream.
Evenings at Tangalooma are just as magical. Sunset cocktails on the Wheelhouse Deck were a must, followed by a meal at the resort’s Beach BBQ restaurant. Grilled Moreton Bay bugs—a local delicacy—were a highlight. For more variety, Tangalooma offers several dining options, all serving fresh and flavourful dishes.

The next morning brought our snorkelling adventure at the famous Tangalooma Wrecks. A guided tour took us by boat to the wrecks, where we plunged into crystal-clear water teeming with marine life. We spotted schools of vibrant fish darting through the wrecks, and the occasional turtle lazily swimming by. The guides ensured everyone felt comfortable, providing equipment suited to all skill levels. The marine diversity around the wrecks is astounding, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a wobbegong shark hiding among the wrecks.
When you’re not booked in with activities the golden sands of Tangalooma’s beach are perfect for relaxing. The calm waters of the bay make for perfect paddleboarding conditions, and we rented a board for a peaceful few hours on the water, occasionally spotting marine life beneath us. But the island’s most special experience has to be feeding the dolphins at dusk. Tangalooma’s dolphin-feeding program, in place for over 30 years, lets you hand-feed wild dolphins, offering an unforgettable close encounter with these intelligent creatures. We had the chance to feed “Rani,” one of the regular dolphins, and even saw “Eclipse,” a young dolphin born earlier this year..
Another must-visit dining spot is Fire and Stone, an Asianinspired restaurant that delivered a fantastic culinary experience. And no evening is complete without a stop at the resort’s bar for a fun round of bingo, adding a playful touch to the night.
The last morning of holidays always brings a little melancholy. We were able to fit in one last stroll along the beach, walking the 1.5 km stretch to the Tangalooma Wrecks, where we soaked up the island’s natural beauty one last time. And, as if the holiday gods were smiling down on us, our ferry ride home featured an unexpected whale-watching bonus—seeing a mother and calf surface near the boat was the perfect farewell.
Tangalooma Island Resort has quickly become our favourite island escape, offering the allure of a tropical paradise without the hassle of long flights or logistical headaches. Whether you’re after a quick three-night break or a more extended getaway, this stunning local gem is the ideal destination. We’ll be back soon for sure.

AHH STRADDIE
North Stradbroke Island, affectionately known as Straddie, or Minjerribah in its traditional name, is a beloved local destination that perfectly blends natural beauty, cultural heritage and laid-back charm. Just under three hours from Tweed Heads, it’s the world’s second-largest sand island, offering a mix of stunning coastlines, diverse wildlife, and deep historical roots. Whether you’re after adventure, relaxation, solo exploration or family fun, Straddie has it all in spades.
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
There’s something about stepping onto the Sealink ferry at Cleveland—the salty breeze on your face, the sound of waves lapping against the hull—that gets the holiday vibes going. And with two options: the 25-minute passenger ferry or the 45-minute vehicle ferry, the trip across the water allows for a moment of pause to inhale the sea air and leave your worries behind.
Once on the island, there are three main towns to explore: Dunwich, Amity Point, and Point Lookout, each with its own distinct charm. Dunwich offers a glimpse into the past with the North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum. Amity Point, known for its calm waters and stunning sunsets, is ideal for camping and unwinding. And Point Lookout, the island’s most popular
spot, boasts breathtaking beaches, picturesque coastal walks and welcoming cafes.
The significant appeal of this place is the coastline, where beaches are nothing short of breathtaking. The island’s coastline is dotted with hidden coves, clear waters and expansive sandy stretches perfect for swimming, surfing, or simply lounging with a good book. Cylinder Beach and Home Beach, two of the most popular spots, offer safe swimming conditions and spectacular views of the Coral Sea. From May to November, lucky visitors might even catch a glimpse of migrating humpback whales breaching just off the coast. For adventure seekers, Straddie offers plenty of water-based activities. You can join a snorkelling tour to explore the waters around Peel Island or paddle out on
a kayaking trip with Straddie Kingfisher Tours, where you might spot dugongs, turtles and dolphins.
Beyond the beaches, Straddie’s deep connection to the land runs deep. The island is home to the Quandamooka people, its traditional custodians, who have lived on Minjerribah for over 21,000 years. Their connection to the land is palpable, and visitors can learn more about their rich history through cultural sites and the ancient shell middens scattered across the island. The North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum in Dunwich is a must-visit, housing fascinating artefacts and stories that bring the island’s past to life, including a giant whale jawbone that washed ashore decades ago.
Here you’ll discover the gripping stories of shipwrecks and skeletons found on a beach, lost cargos and dynamite explosions – it's everything an island tale needs. You’ll also learn about early settler life and the island’s time as a quarantine station and asylum, offering fascinating insights into Straddie’s unique and sometimes tumultuous history.
The island’s community is small but vibrant, with around 3,500 permanent residents who are fiercely protective of its natural beauty. Despite development pressures, Straddie remains largely untouched, with no buildings over three storeys, a testament to the islanders’ determination to preserve Straddie’s unique character.
Artists, inspired by the natural beauty, are also a big part of island life. Delvene Cockatoo-Collins, a Quandamooka woman, expresses her connection to the island through ceramics, textiles and prints, sharing the stories of her family’s lived experiences on Minjerribah. Her works capture the essence of the island, reflecting the natural environment and its deep cultural significance.
Another artistic treasure on the island is Jennie Truman’s Point Lookout gallery– Cloudfish – where you’ll find her stunning paintings beautifully capture the colours of Straddie’s coastline in saturated teals and sea foam blues, deep magentas and ochres. While you’re there, pop next door to The Blue Room Cafe, owned by the same family and serving up some of the island’s best treats—think giant double-stuffed cookies, mountainous moist carrot cake with lashings of cream cheese icing and pots of spicy chai tea. It’s the perfect spot to relax and immerse yourself in the island vibe.
Straddie’s natural landscapes are also home to a diverse variety of wildlife, including 450 native animal species, 43 of which are rare or threatened. The island’s wetlands, unique to Moreton Bay, support a rich ecosystem, including migratory birds that travel from as far away as Russia. It’s not unusual to see kangaroos

lounging on front lawns or koalas perched lazily in roadside trees, a reminder of the island’s abundant wildlife.
For those keen to explore more, Straddie’s coastal walks offer stunning vistas and chances to spot wildlife. The Whale Walk at Point Lookout – a boardwalk walking path with platformed stops along the way – provides great vantage points for whale watching, while the North Gorge Walk, perhaps the island’s most popular trail, is a gentle 1.5 km walk with steps, offering panoramic views of the coastline. For those wanting more, the island’s myriad inland bush tracks reveal equally expansive views and awe-inspiring scenery. The new 2.2 km Mount Vane walking track, a partnership between the Quandamooka People and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, is a new addition to the island’s extensive trail network. This track links with existing trails within the Naree Budjong Djara (My Mother Earth) National Park, creating a 10 km loop of bush walks through the island’s lush interior.
Straddie offers a range of accommodations – from beachfront campsites to resorts and serviced apartments – and modern amenities like a police station, doctor’s surgery and small markets offering fresh produce, but it remains delightfully free from over-commercialisation. The balance between development and nature is well-guarded, ensuring the island remains a peaceful retreat for all who live and visit here.
What makes North Stradbroke Island so special is its simplicity. A slower pace that invites reconnection with nature and a moment to stop and savour life’s small pleasures. In our own backyard, Straddie offers everything you could want from a tropical island getaway: pristine beaches, rich wildlife, deep cultural heritage and an undeniable magic that keeps visitors coming back time and again

COASTAL BLISS
During our recent stay on North Stradbroke Island, we were hosted by Dolphin Accommodation at the Waves apartment complex, and from the moment we stepped inside, we knew we were in for something special. Perched right on Cylinder Beach at Point Lookout, the apartment offered everything we needed for a perfect coastal escape.
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
From the moment we arrived, the breathtaking ocean views set the stage. The kids eagerly claimed their rooms while we found our way to the spacious balcony, where an inviting outdoor nest chair quickly became my favourite spot. There, I could unwind with a good book, warmed by the afternoon sun and lulled by the rhythmic crash of waves—a melody that set a relaxing tone for our stay.
Waves Apartments is a boutique beachfront complex situated just meters from the sand, making its location unbeatable. Each morning, we were greeted by nature’s wonders—whales breaching in the distance, dolphins playfully diving close to shore. Observing these majestic creatures from our balcony felt like a gift and added an extra touch of magic to our holiday.
Inside, the apartment’s design and amenities were crafted for comfort. The three-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom layout allowed everyone space to relax, while the fully equipped galley kitchen made meal preparation a breeze. Yet, with the Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel restaurant and bar next door, we had the best of both worlds, enjoying quiet family meals or simply relishing the ease of a nearby dining options. The indoor-outdoor living space, with bifold doors leading to the balcony, made the apartment feel open and inviting, the perfect place to unwind while savouring the stunning coastal views.
With everything we needed right at our fingertips, from the complex pool to direct beach access just steps from our door, we found ourselves slowing down and enjoying life in the moment - spending our days swimming, strolling along the coastline and losing ourselves in holiday novels. In the afternoons, we’d indulge in ice creams while exploring the local shops and galleries. There’s a sense of simplicity on North Stradbroke Island, with just enough to do without feeling rushed or busy.
That’s exactly how we like it—laid-back, surrounded by nature, with time to reconnect as a family.
Penthouse 15 at Waves Apartments, with its unbeatable location and modern comforts, was the ideal base for our island getaway. The convenience of underground parking meant we could easily explore the island, though with so much beauty right outside our door, we found ourselves lingering, reluctant to leave our beachside haven.
For those seeking a tranquil escape steeped in natural beauty, Dolphin Accommodation and Waves Apartments offer an unforgettable family holiday experience.

JK-47 ON MUSIC, BROTHERHOOD, AND THE JOURNEY AHEAD
Locale Magazine catches up with award-winning rapper JK-47, a proud Bundjalung and South Sea Islander from Tweed Heads. With his new single "BLAKT OUT" and upcoming EP A Road Less Travelled, JK-47 shares the powerful connections, personal stories, and deep-rooted pride that shape his music.
INTERVIEW BY KAREN KINNERSLY
Your latest single, "BLAKT OUT," radiates a sense of brotherhood and celebration. What was the spark behind this track, and how did your connection with your brother Chiggz shape its vibe?
This song is about those moments when you’re on top of the world and everything just feels right. Having my older brother Chiggz on the track makes it even more special—this one’s for the family.
"BLAKT OUT" brings back the nostalgia of cruising in your first car with the music blasting. Do those every day, relatable moments often inspire your songwriting?
BLAKT OUT is a celebration of good vibes and brotherhood. The track paints a vivid picture of cruising in my first car, a
‘blakt out’ Holden, with music cranked up and the crew in the back. It also reflects the close bond between my brother and me. Our connection hopefully comes through in the song’s energy and lyrics. It’s the essence of feeling good and looking good with the mob by your side.
"A ROAD LESS TRAVELLED" feels like a deeply personal body of work. What do you hope listeners connect with the most?
It’s exactly that, taking the road less travelled to get to the destination. However the listener interprets it, whatever they’re going through and whatever they need to do to get to their own destination, taking the road less travelled is the way to do it.
Growing up on Minyugmbal / Goodjinburra country in Tweed Heads must have left a mark on your music and identity. How has your upbringing shaped the sound and message of your art?
Life was challenging – raised in a single-mum home, with siblings that all had needs. Times were tough, but full of love too.
We’re curious—who’s your biggest musical influence right now, and how are they shaping your current sound?
I listen to Little Simz – I’ve been listening to her album “No Thank You” and drawing a lot of inspiration from a female’s perspective.
As an Indigenous artist in the Australian hip-hop scene, you’ve become a role model for many. How does it feel to hold that position of influence and impact?
It always humbling. It's also about making sure your cup is full to pour from. It’s a blessing.
You’ve been steadily rising in the Australian hip-hop scene. What’s next for you in terms of live shows and new projects?
After a long time, I’m about to hit the road for my “Regrowth Tour”. I'm so happy to share my music and love with everyone. Grab your tickets!
What are some of your goals as an artist? Do you plan to take your music to the global stage?
I’d love to hit all the communities on this Continent first, then yeah – if that’s Gods will.

Connolly’s studio, a cosy bungalow with French doors that open to sweeping valley views and the distant ocean, is set within an idyllic landscape alive with bearded dragons and butterflies. Here, under an open sky, he weaves the lush, saturated blues and greens of his surroundings into each work. His canvases bloom with flowers and haunting faces appear. “Are they self-portraits?” I muse. “Possibly,” he smiles.
Connolly first made waves with a commission by famed hairstylist Jay Edwards for his iconic Edwards & Co. salons. Since then, his large-scale murals have adorned some of the country’s most prestigious spaces. From high-end restaurants and hotels to shopping malls and private residences, Connolly’s symbolic and emotionally resonant style has left a lasting impression, with highprofile projects at places like The Calile Hotel and Sydney’s Mecca Cosmetics flagship store. His ethereal designs have even found their way onto Husk Distilleries’ gin bottles.
At the core of Connolly’s work is an organic connection to nature. His vibrant murals, marked by fluid, floral motifs, act as a bridge between indoor spaces and the world outside, inviting viewers to consider themes of growth, transformation and the interconnectedness of all life. Connolly’s approach is intuitive and free-flowing, guided by an inner vision that allows his creativity to unfold naturally. His signature style, rich in blues and greens, reflects themes of evolution and delicate beauty, lending each mural a soft, ethereal quality as if nature itself is taking root within the urban landscape.

Recently, Connolly’s work has been shaped by personal loss. The passing of his dear friend, Tessa, left a profound mark, and in his studio, the butterflies in his garden have become poignant symbols of her presence. They find their way into his work as a tribute to her memory. “They’re like reminders that she’s still here,” he reflects. This journey through grief has shaped his recent collection, imbuing each piece with a raw, emotional quality that offers his audience a glimpse into his personal healing.
After a sabbatical in Bali, a place he considers his spiritual home, Connolly returned with a renewed vision. “Spending time in another culture reshapes your perspective,” he shares, appreciative of Bali’s karmic approach to life. “It brings you back to something good, something that’s in us all.” Bali’s peaceful Hindu practices and slower pace allow him to tap into creativity away from materialism and closer to inner peace. “I feel an expansion after I’ve been there, less urgency,” he reflects. “Sometimes stepping away from the day-to-day busyness is necessary; it lets you sink into your creativity.”
Back home in the Northern Rivers, Connolly is reinspired, his studio now filled with drying ceramic pieces awaiting glaze. Venturing into ceramics and exploring new, nature-inspired designs on wearable art has given him a fresh sense of possibility. “Branching into a 3D medium is refreshing and exciting,” he says, explaining how this exploration has revitalised his creative energy. After his recent collection’s themes of grief, this new direction feels liberating, allowing him to reimagine his creative boundaries.
For Connolly, art has been a saving grace, offering him both an anchor and a path to healing. In a world where everyone carries their own challenges, he believes that art has the power to disarm, to connect and to heal. “Art has a way of transcending, of becoming something we all need,” he reflects. Through his work, Connolly hopes to share that gift with others, reminding us of the beauty in transformation and the quiet peace that both nature and art can bring.

WEAVING HISTORY INTO THE PRESENT
A groundbreaking exhibition by Arts Northern Rivers, Bulaan Buruugaa Ngali, celebrates the rich tapestry of indigenous weaving traditions, while also marking a poignant homecoming for ancestral artefacts.
WRITTEN BY ALISON BONE
In a powerful reclamation of cultural identity, the Bulaan Buruugaa Ngali exhibition sees woven artefacts displayed on their ancestral grounds — Bundjalung lands in the Northern Rivers — for the first time. Touring major regional galleries of Grafton, Lismore and Tweed, the exhibition aims to reconnect individuals with their ancestral roots through shared artistic practices.
Bridging ancient traditions and wisdom with contemporary expressions, the Bulaan Buruugaa Ngali exhibition combines nine intricately woven Bundjalung ancestral bags from the Australian Museum collection, with ten newly commissioned works by contemporary artists from Bundjalung, Yaegl, Gumbaynggirr, and Kamilaroi communities. “It’s a unique showcase and an exciting homecoming, one that weaves our history into the present,” says Kylie Caldwell, curator of the exhibition.
Of deep cultural significance, indigenous weaving practices date back more than 50,000 years, with the use of different grasses, barks and pigments creating regional variations. Woven objects such as mats, bowls and dilly bags or ‘dili’, have practical purposes, but are also items of beauty. In addition, weaving has traditionally been seen as way to share cultural knowledge, and connect people with country.
Contemporary works on show include ‘Dili’ by multidisciplinary artist and curator, Bindimu, a Bundjalung, Gugu Yalanji, Gooreng Gooreng, Melanesian woman. She explains, “the process of weaving a dili begins with the plants and the place, a conscious and cautious collection. This dili embodies the sacredness of this embryonic relationship, a process that intricately weaves together multiple ecosystems.”

Also on display is ‘Dyinda on Country’ by Bundjalung/Yaegl artist Krystal Randall, who has designed wearable art from raffia, emu feathers and paper cortege, representing matriarchs on country. “I have envisioned matriarchs wearing these pieces in special ceremonies, dancing and taking the younger generation out on country to gather pieces, and to show them how to weave and make their own cultural wear,” she says.
Renowned arts and cultural leader, actress and director, Rhoda Roberts AO, has also created a piece for the exhibition, entitled, ‘Continuous Persistence’ which is made of lomandra grass harvested on country. “Weaving is more than art, it’s an essence of the circular rhythm that can be continuous and has been crafted from the provisions of country. We have returned full circle, to the old ways where once our grandmothers gathered under the trees, weaving,” she says.
A catalyst for the exhibition, the book 'Bulaan Buruugaa Ngali... we weave together', was written and compiled by Roberts and Caldwell. Visually stunning, it brings to life inspiring stories of weavers and elders, while also exploring historic museum collections, traditional plant species and harvesting techniques. “For me personally, weaving is listening and hearing the stories. It’s getting the knowledge from our old people, elders and custodians who often didn’t have a voice in this history of this country. That gives you such strong sense of strength and belonging and pride. It’s a reawakening,” says Roberts. Published by Arts Northern Rivers, the book follows four years of workshops with local weavers, who shared their knowledge and techniques with Aboriginal communities across the Bundjalung region, and in so doing helped revitalise age old weaving practices.
Weaving history into contemporary narratives, Bulaan Buruugaa Ngali empowers current and future generations to embrace their cultural identities through art. Catch the exhibition at Grafton Regional Gallery from 21 December 2024 to 9 January 2025, Tweed Regional Gallery from 22 February to 27 April, and Lismore Regional Gallery, from 12 September - 9 November 2025.
