MIAMI MAGIC WR I T TE N BY VA NE S S A VA STAG
Anyone who’s grown up on the Gold Coast will agree that the lifestyle here is nothing short of spectacular. The daily invitation to soak up the sun on white sandy beaches, frolic in the waves of pristine surf, explore the sub-tropical mountain ranges for hikes, spot wildlife, uncover secluded waterholes for a refreshing mountain swim, makes this city a true adventurer’s paradise.
We take a tour of a little slice of the GC - a bustling, funky suburb positioned smack bang in the centre of the strip that claims a section of the oceanfront between Burleigh Heads and Nobby’s Beach, and is home to quite a few of the historic landmarks that help put the Gold Coast on the map. Right now, it's all about the magic of Miami!

HISTORY Miami State High School is the Gold Coast’s second oldest established State School. Famous for its giant, iconic and now heritage-listed Hollywood-style sign, plastered across a 50m high rocky slope with the first original words reading “HI MIAMI HIGH” rebranded now to simply “MIAMI HIGH”. Twenty years ago, surfing was actually a subject that you could take among many other unique classes. These days the school offers Southeast Queensland’s first and only Aviation subject in the senior syllabus. Of course, we also can’t mention this fabulous little suburb without mentioning its famous Miami Ice factory. Established in 1947 after reusing remnants of disused World War II army huts, the Miami Ice Factory’s signage became a familiar landmark where its giant sun (wearing sunglasses), known as Mr Sunny decorated its Gold Coast Highway frontage. It’s also where our brilliant Aussie pop star John Farnham made one of his top hit music videos “Two Strong Hearts”, featuring the front of the Miami Ice building. Even though the building was demolished and replaced in 2013 with a large residential Hotel, the developers decided to keep the iconic name Miami Ice and there are still remnants of some of the old machinery kept as relics. What’s worthy of a side note, is the craftily named Chinese and Malaysian restaurant next door at the Outrigger Resort called Miami Rice. Quirky for sure but the food won’t disappoint.

WHERE THE COOL KIDS GO Anyone growing up in Miami in the 80s that had any skill on a skateboard would surely be seen at the Pizzey Park Skate bowl. It was a definite feature for all ages to leave some skin behind on the steep and slippery concrete graffitied curves. Modified in 2021, it received a million-dollar cash injection with the new site featuring an Olympic standard upgrade. A whopping 4800 square metre site which includes a pro bowl and half bowl with 3ft-5ft transitions, banks, hubbies, stairs, ledgers, rails, fun boxes and more. A definite day out for any family members young and old who know how to roll, on any kind of wheels. In fact, scattered all around this area are a plethora of recreational clubs and sports facilities – from The Miami Tennis Club and Pickleball Centre to the Gold Coast Masters Football Association, and everything in between - not to mention the connected extensive open spaces for walking, running and cycling, playgrounds, off leash dog parks, and outdoor BBQ areas. You’ll find something for everyone in this indoor and outdoor sports haven.
Pizzey Park
FOOD, DRINKS AND ENTERTAINMENT If it’s great eats and entertainment you’re looking for, Miami does not fall short of some truly magical and mouth-watering experiences. Don’t go past the delicious wood fire bakery breads and pastry treats for breakfast or lunch at Paddock Bakery; an indoor and outdoor café experience sitting right on the cusp of the suburb. This old refurbished Queenslander is now home to a vibrant and bustling, cottage garden style, bakehouse and has become a true foodies delight. Literally everything on the menu is recommended. Hitting the beachfront is one of the most popular things to do here on the GC. One of the very few cafés that sit adjacent to the beach is Miami’s own Piccolo Espresso. A popular morning coffee jaunt and a brilliant breakfast or lunch pit stop if you’re on two legs, two wheels or even four furry paws. There’s room for everyone to sit back, enjoy the views with great coffee and great food. Then of course there’s the Miami Marketta - popping up on the scene in 2011 as a super grungy, vibing night market, food stall, Granddad Jack's

live music venue extraordinaire. Boasting an awesome selection of international flavours and cuisines from various street-style stalls. However, it’s not just the eats that are amazing, you can wash it all down with any beverage of choice as the venue is also licensed and scattered with multiple bar areas serving all kinds of boutique local beers and wines as well as some international favourites. Combined with epic live music and ticketed events - with some big-name international artists gracing their halls – makes this a place one to keep on your radar for a great night out. Also on the must-do hit list is Grandad Jack’s Craft Distillery. A tale in and of itself about the Gold Coast's first and only craft Gin, Vodka, Whiskey & Liqueur distillery established by David Goulding AKA, Grandad Jack. What makes this distillery such a unique experience is the homage paid to David’s life, with each different spirit inspired and named for his life experiences. This craft distillery is one of seven scattered internationally that offer a range of award-winning spirits and liquors for tours, tastings and even the ultimate experience of making your very own bottle of gin. A thoroughly enjoyable experience from a family-owned and run business. As for experiences and exploration, this sweet little suburb has a fantastic line-up – from filling your boots in the cooler months at the Ugg Australia factory, to getting your hands dirty at Miami’s Stone Studio - a community pottery and studio café where you can take a pottery class, buy some great homewares, connect in the café, or even sign up as a studio member and take your skills to the next level. Whatever your desire, this professional studio will have you covered, even if it’s temporarily in clay. For something more adventurous, go deep with the Gold Coast Dive Centre and Marine Training College, hit the surf with Australian surfing adventures for some lessons, or even shape and design your own surfboard with S-LAB. There are adventures and activities to keep you busy all year round and that’s just a few tricks that Miami has up its sleeve. But don’t take our word for it, come and discover for yourself the true magic of Miami!

AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE When a skydive went wrong, Emma Carey literally fell 14,000 feet from the sky. In 2013, Emma Carey flew to Europe with her best friend Jemma Mrdak. They were 20-years old and had been dreaming of the trip for years. Skydiving was also a dream of Emma’s, and five days after arriving in Europe, she leapt from a helicopter over the Swiss Alps. The elation and excitement of what she describes as “One of the best moments of my life,” quickly turned into her worst nightmare, with the realisation that something was wrong. They weren’t slowing down; the parachute hadn’t opened. “While I was falling to the ground, I had been so petrified of dying that it never crossed my mind there could be something even worse,” says Emma. But as she lay in agony, face down on the ground, pinned under the instructor, she realised that she couldn’t move her legs. “Worse than the physical pain, was the heartbreak,” she says. “I had to live in this body for the rest of my life and I had ruined it.” Emma was airlifted to hospital, where a doctor informed her that she had crushed her spinal cord, and broken her sacrum, sternum, L1 vertebrae and pelvis. He told her she would never be able to walk again.
in her mind. She attributes being conscious throughout the fall and impact, and genuinely thinking she was going to die, for her deep gratitude in being alive. "A bad situation can turn into the best thing that ever happened to you, if you make it," she says. Emma shares her story in her best-selling book, The Girl Who Fell From the Sky, and recently spoke at TEDx, Currumbin. Her popular Instagram account has 192,000 followers, who see her face beaming off the screen as she lives her best life – jet skiing, surfing, riding a bike along the coastal paths of Palm Beach, and travelling to exotic locales around the world – including Antarctica. “I’ve found a way to see beauty in absolutely everything… and feel a kind of happiness which I had never experienced before my accident,” says Emma. And it is this mindset of gratitude, self-acceptance and taking nothing for granted, that inspires her legion of followers. In June 2023, Emma and Jemma returned to Lauterbrunnen to mark ten years to the day since the accident that transformed her life. In a moving post we see Emma bathed in sunshine in a

Yes, I put a lot of work into my physical therapy, but no amount of sheer willpower can force a nerve to work when it is severed… it really came down to sheer luck in the way my spinal cord was damaged.” She adds, “If positivity, resilience and determination were all it took to heal a damaged spinal cord, not a single person I’ve encountered in a wheelchair would still be sitting down.” More than a journey about learning to walk again, Emma’s story is about embracing life with enthusiasm, and finding beauty in every moment. Through her words and images, she invites others to share in her excitement for living and the joy that has become her reality. Follow her @em_carey, or head to her website emcarey.com.
"I’VE FOUND A WAY TO SEE BEAUTY IN ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING ….AND FEEL A KIND OF HAPPINESS WHICH I HAD NEVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE MY ACCIDENT” In the dark days that followed, a thought kept running through Emma’s mind. The morning of the accident she had planned to go for a run along Lauterbrunnen’s picturesque walking trail, but hadn’t bothered. “I was angry with myself because I didn’t do the thing I loved most in the entire world while I had the chance, and now it seemed I never would again.” Reaching for a notebook she wrote down the five words, ‘If you can you must,’ which would become a kind of mantra for her. “If there’s something that we want to do and we have the ability to do it, we must while we have the chance… we think we have forever, but we don’t,” she explains.
beautiful alpine field, sharing thoughts on what she would tell her younger self. “There’s a future and you are in it and it’s brighter than anything you’ve felt before, I’m so glad you stayed so I could live it.” Inspiring is the first adjective that comes to mind when you hear Emma’s story, but she likes to make it very clear that she doesn’t hold some kind of secret cure to healing. “It’s not something you can manifest, or
Two weeks after the accident, Emma had an epiphany, “I remember laying there and vividly thinking, you can be paralysed and miserable, or be paralysed and try to create a fulfilling, exciting life regardless,” she says. And that shift in perspective has defined her journey ever since. Back in Australia a few months later, something miraculous happened. Emma began to experience movement, and gradually over the next year – despite never regaining feeling from the waist down – she began to walk. Fast forward ten years and Emma describes herself as a walking paraplegic. While there has been a lot of focus on the fact that she learned to use her legs again, what she is most proud of is the difference 13

Cali Beach Club
WR I T T E N BY K I R R A S M I T H
The Gold Coast has long been known as one of the most awe-inspiring coastal cities in the world. Set on over 30 kilometres of sparkling golden beaches, we’ve created a thriving culture around the surf, the sun, and the sand - along with the allure of a cold beer at the end of a long, hot day that is. 18
DISCOVER
Until recently, there has not been a place where locals or visitors could laze under an umbrella with a bar only a few steps away and a sparkly body of water even closer. But all that has changed since the ever-popular beach club has arisen in our midst. Over the last few years our social media feeds have been filled with friends and family frolicking in the Mediterranean. Lazing on sun loungers, cocktail in hand, soaking up that sweltering European sun. Which is lovely for them but jealousy-inducing for the rest of us. At least it was until umbrella-laden beach clubs began popping up across some of our favourite beaches - becoming the perfect addition to a city centred around a salty lifestyle. Cali Beach Club is perched four stories above Surfers Paradise Blvd and is Australia’s largest rooftop restaurant and bar encapsulating everything a good beach bar should. There are four pools to choose from, luxe VIP cabanas with daybeds, countless sun loungers, two incredible restaurants, several bars, a beach volleyball sandpit, and an outdoor cinema. Just a stone’s throw from the heart of Surfers Paradise, Cali Beach Club is the ultimate day/night poolside experience.

It’s as close as you’ll find to a beachside Greek island club - but with a little something special you won’t find anywhere else. You’ll find yourself kicking back beneath a white umbrella or on a daybed or cabana with a choice of two heavenly pools, separated by a runway no less and multi-million-dollar views. The impressive space is the brainchild of Gold Coast hospitality royalty Patrik Gennari and The Gennari Group, so you know every single detail has been accounted for. Once you’ve had your fill of basking in the sun, cocktail in hand you’re invited to head next door for a fine dining feast at the poolside’s sister restaurant MĀRE. Soak Bathhouse - Mermaid Beach This elegant urban bathhouse in Mermaid Beach promotes the benefits of bathing as a form of self-care, stress relief and as a wellness ritual that’s enhanced by social connection. After suffering the effects of burnout on her health and relationships, CEO and co-founder, Alexis Dyson, was inspired to embrace a more holistic approach to wellness, and wanted to create a space where others could too. And so, Soak Bathhouse came into being as a place where people who are feeling frazzled can press the reset button.

SPOTLIGHT
A SHINING LIGHT WR I T T E N BY A L I S O N B O NE
Ever wondered about those purple recycle bins you see around the Gold Coast? Set up by Hearts of Purple – a charity that helps people at high risk of domestic violence – the Purple Bin Program is helping reclaim lives, one 10 cent container at a time. Mostly hidden behind closed doors, domestic violence is one of those things that no one wants to talk about but the dangers are real, as Michelle Beattie learned from first-hand experience. Around the time she became a victim, another woman, Theresa Bradford, was murdered by her ex-husband, who subsequently committed suicide, leaving four children parentless. Realising there wasn’t a system in place for people in high-risk situations, Michelle was galvanised into action, quit her job as a nurse, and in 2017 founded Hearts of Purple with Co-Director Carolyn Choyce. The small team includes a nurse, lawyer, investigator & security manager, and intelligence analyst and with the help of volunteers, aims to break the cycle of abuse, and create a safer and more secure environment for those affected by domestic violence. While domestic violence can happen to anyone, figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show one in four women have experienced intimate or family violence, are six times more likely to be hospitalised, and four times more likely to be murdered by an intimate partner. Michelle adds some startling statistics of her own, “38 women were murdered in Australia in the first 30 weeks of 2023, in acts of domestic violence.” She explains, “Hearts of Purple is not a standard domestic violence service, it’s more like a specialised unit.” The high-tech security watches that the organisation provide can sound alerts, contact emergency numbers, and stream live video, while the team can also sweep for tracking and listening devices, hide victims and do extractions in high-risk situations. Their high-risk packages also help people escape dangerous situations and to rebuild their lives through provision of financial assistance, tracking devices, food parcels, relocation services and accommodation. With no government funding, Hearts of Purple relies on donations alone and in March 2020 set up the Purple Bin Program. They now have 700 bins across Queensland collecting 10 cent recyclables. From little things big things grow and enough money was collected by September 2022, to purchase a block of land. Their next goal is to build four two-bedroom houses on the property for domestic violence survivors. The initiative also aims to create awareness in the community. “Times are tough, people will donate to fluffy koalas or to breast cancer research, but when it comes to domestic violence, it’s hard to get people to donate,” says Michelle. “I suppose its confronting, people don’t want to talk about it, but the bins are a conversation starter.” As well as collecting your recyclables for Hearts of Purple, you can make financial donations, set up a fund raiser, and donate items like smart phones and prepaid sims, school uniforms and children’s toys, clothing, homewares, and electrical goods or volunteer your time. “We are making changes and we are saving lives. If anyone out there can just help us get these houses built, we'd be so appreciative,” says Michelle. Check the website donations page to see how you can make a difference. heartsofpurple.org 24
If you are facing a violent situation at home, Michelle advises, “seek help from the police immediately, and try to collect evidence.” What if you suspect a friend or work colleague may be a victim of domestic violence? “You have a duty of care and need to report it,” says Michelle. Red flags to look out for include, “someone who was happy go lucky and suddenly their behaviour changes, or a colleague that starts coming to work early or staying longer and doesn’t want to go home.” And if you hear your neighbour screaming for help, “don’t turn a blind eye, pick up the phone and call triple 0,” she adds. “You may not want to get involved but you can remain anonymous.”

Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Club
CURRUMBIN BEACH VIKINGS SURF CLUB You can’t get a closer spot on the Gold Coast to the ocean – nay, Australia – than Currumbin’s iconic Currumbin Surf Club. When big swells hit the coast, it actually cuts off from the rest of the coast. The car park fills with sand, and you’ll need a 4WD just to secure a parking spot. There’s no better place to come to impress your friends, you can eat (or drink) and stare through floor-to-ceiling windows at surfers taking on waves only metres in front. There’s also a front deck to get even closer. This is also the place to come each Anzac Day when thousands gather for a dawn service that’s telecast live on Sunrise. Three meals a day are served seven days a week. The burgers and steaks are great, but you’ll find fancier fare too. currumbinslsc.com.au
PALM BEACH SURF CLUB Another spot (and in one of the trendiest suburbs on the Gold Coast) that’ll blow minds: walk to the top of the stairs on entry and the surf is just there. Sit out on the covered al fresco patio for meals cooked by the Clubs Queensland Chef of the Year for 2023 and you’re only two metres from the sand. The food’s great but you can also cash in on some specials, like two for $25 fish and chips on Mondays, or $2 oysters every Tuesday, or $22 steaks on Wednesday. There’s always a friendly collection of locals, though travellers in the know come here because there’s no bar or restaurant closer to the beach in Palm Beach. While it’s also a peaceful place to dine, don’t miss some live music looking out across the dunes.

A recent renovation has really opened up the interior, or you can sit out on the deck, above the dunes. You can’t go past their legendary grain fed rump steaks. The restaurant has won Best Dining awards by Keno & Clubs Queensland while chef Jeremiah Abrogah is a former Club Chef of the Year winner. RAINBOW BAY SURF CLUB You just can’t beat this spot for any bar or restaurant setting anywhere in Australia. Built right above the only beach facing north on the Gold Coast (meaning you’d have sheltered conditions year-round and a helluva sunset every night), the ocean deck here has the best vantage point you could dream of to watch surfers take on the mighty waves of one of the world’s best surf beaches below (Snapper Rocks). This is one of Queensland’s most iconic buildings – it’s 61 years old – and has been the setting for generations of Gold Coasters’ weddings. Thongs are allowed (of course), and the emphasis is always on casual (though it’s never shabby). Enjoy a $17 roast night on Mondays and Tuesdays, and a happy hour between Monday and Friday offering $5 schooners. Or turn up for Sunday afternoon sessions featuring some of the coast’s best musicians.

KURRAWA SURF CLUB Kurrawa Surf Club set the standard for surf clubs all over Australia after its fancy $16 million make-over in 2017. Sleek stone steps lead to a dining room with 230-degree views right out over the beach, and there’s ocean views from every table. The bar’s great too, and if you fancy a flutter, there’s also a gaming lounge. But the beach views are what this club’s about. Eat award-winning food that won’t break the bank – there’s specials on meals such as cottage pie with mashed potato or lamb kofta with Mediterranean couscous salad and mint yoghurt for $17 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays – or try dishes made in the club’s special Spanish charcoal oven, like twice-cooked pork belly. The club is built not far from the heart of entertainment hot-spot, Broadbeach, and it’s close to some great accommodation options. kurrawasurf.com.au Kurrawa Surf Club

A PASSION FOR COFFEE & CONNECTION Rachel Follan’s journey into the world of coffee began at the age of 15, whilst working as a barista during high school. Unbeknownst to her, those several years in her after-school café job, would ignite a life-long passion for specialty coffee. It was Follan’s experience of living and working in Canada however – and the lack of a decent coffee – that solidified the importance of the humble little coffee bean in the founder's life. Despite the challenges she faced in 2020 to get home, Follan’s determination to return and continue working as a barista in Burleigh Heads eventually prevailed. Finally, getting back into the local coffee scene, she found her passion for the craft reignite. By 2021, an apprentice coffee roaster position was secured and marked the beginning of a journey into coffee appreciation and preparation. With her role came the ever-increasing desire to learn more about coffee, its origins, and its impact on agriculture and society growing stronger, understanding the art of coffee roasting, and supporting coffee farmers became Follan’s priority. Then, with the encouragement of her dad, Follan began brainstorming ideas for her own business. But it was the funny little sketch of a kookaburra named Kev, that jumped off the page and brought the idea to life – a brand was born. Starting small, the massive amount of support Follan received exceeded her expectations. “I would often joke that once my friends and family had bought a bag of my coffee, it would all be over… what I didn’t expect was an overwhelming love for not only the brand, but the magic beans too” she says. These days, Whyld Coffee can be enjoyed at Commune Espresso - one of Burleigh's wellknown cafés, which serves the brand exclusively. Additionally, a partnership was formed with the popular coffee van, Little Nova, a staple at big events and festivals in town. What sets Whyld Coffee apart from other roasters? Perhaps it’s that 100% Certified Organic Coffee is exclusively used. Or that the beans are sourced and combined meticulously by Follan - the house blend, 'Solstice,' combines beans from Colombia, Ethiopia, and Brazil to create a smooth and balanced espresso - who, as a one-woman show, roasts, picks, blends, and packages all the coffee by hand. It could also be that single-origin offerings are frequently rotated, with a focus on beans from micro lots that allow for the sharing of the farmers' stories. We think the standout, however, is Follan’s commitment to genuine human connection, and her firm belief that excellent coffee goes hand in hand with fostering meaningful relationships. thatswhyld.com.au @thats_whyld_coffee

RIDING HIGH There’s not that many places in Australia where you can still ride a horse to the pub, lucky for us Byron Bay is one of them, thanks to Zephyr Horses Pub Tours which include brunch or lunch at the North Byron Hotel. WR I T T E N BY A L I S O N B O NE
I have walked, cycled, driven, and been driven to the pub, but arriving on horseback via a trail through the lush tea tree forest must go down as my most memorable entrance. “We refer pretty loosely to the pub,” says founder of Zephyr Horses, Kate Noller, on their pub tours, “but the North Byron Hotel is so much more than that. The venue and the vibe is amazing, then there’s the food; I think a lot of people are really surprised by how good it is.” My Sunday Brunch Tour starts at the atmospheric Zephyr Horses ranch, on the edge of a tea tree lake in North Byron. I am paired with Bobby, a gorgeous chestnut mare who is thankfully quite chilled, as I haven’t been on a horse for years, and I soon settle into that distinctive bouncy rhythm that comes with riding a four-legged creature. It’s quiet in the forest, but for the crunch of leaves under hooved feet, the wind whipping through the tree tops, and the sound of crashing waves in the distance. The trail leads through patches of littoral rainforest and dense subtropical tea tree forest carpeted with bright green bracken and native grasses, before suddenly emerging in bright sunlight just behind the hotel. We cause a bit of a stir as we tether our horses to the rails and take a seat in the tropical garden that brims with vibrant edible flowers, continental herbs, chilli bushes and passionfruit vines. “A pub tour is a great way to connect with nature in Byron Bay – it makes you understand why people are so passionate about the land,” says Jedd Rifai, Licensee of North Byron Hotel. It’s also a perfect fit with the creative menu that focusses on locally sourced ingredients. Café style brunch dishes include a Brookfarm Granola 30
Bowl, Bacon & Egg Burger (with free range eggs from up the road), and Ricotta Hotcakes with whipped honey ricotta, seasonal fruit and agave syrup. I opt for a tasty and nutritious Barefoot Bowl, packed with broccolini, greens (freshly plucked from the garden), seeds and nuts, topped with perfectly poached local eggs and zaatar. Sipping my coffee, I look around to see families, young couples with their dogs, a group of women celebrating a birthday, and our horses munching contently on hay. Kate is right, it’s much more than a pub. Since taking over North Byron Hotel two years ago, Jedd has been on a mission to transform the venue into a communal meeting place; and there’s something for everyone, including Kids Club during summer holidays, generous happy hours, and live DJs on Friday and Saturday nights for a more up for it crowd. The fire pit in the centre of the flourishing garden also sets the scene for monthly Open Sky Barbecues in collaboration with a local brewery or distillery, with offerings like wood roasted kingfish, local king prawns and porchetta. Brunch over, we ride back into the sun dappled forest, our departure from the pub as memorable as our arrival. Zephyr Horses also offer Saturday Pub Lunch Tours, and kids pony rides at the hotel (check website for details), as well as signature Forest to Beach Tours. If you ever dreamt of riding a horse on the beach, at sunrise – it would be hard to find a better place than the most easterly tip of Australia to do it. zephyrhorses.com | northbyronhotel.com.au

BLACK HOPS BREWING This brewery started with three Queensland blokes – Dan, Eddie and Govs – who got together at a pub and discussed an idea to brew a stout. The beer tasted pretty good, so the mates thought they’d launch it commercially. When the US video game, Call of Duty, came asking for a special beer for the launch of new product, Call of Duty II, Black Ops III, the rest was history. Now they run a Burleigh Heads brewery that’s rated among the top five in Australia. You’ll find it just two blocks from the waves at Burleigh Point.

Gone are the days where fast fashion reigns supreme, particularly on the Gold Coast where conscious, healthy lifestyle choices abound. With those has come the rise of a slew of locally born, ethical fashion labels creating intentional collections filled with beautifully made pieces that surpass trends and last far longer than a season. WR I T T E N BY K I R R A S M I T H
Creating an ethical fashion label involves making conscious choices in design, sourcing, production, distribution, and consumption, with the goal of promoting fairness, transparency, and responsibility within the fashion supply chain. This can include using eco-friendly materials, ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions for workers, minimizing waste and pollution, and promoting animal welfare, seeking to create a more positive and responsible impact on both the industry and the world at large. Today ethical fashion is less a movement and more the norm, particularly within emerging brands. In Australia alone there are countless fashion and accessories brands committed to sustaining an ethical practice when it comes to designing and manufacturing their collections and excitingly, a number of those brands were born right here on the Gold Coast. Peony Swimwear is one such brand and one of the Gold Coast’s first when it comes to creating with ethical practices front of mind. Owner Becky Morton kick-started one of Australia’s most beloved swimwear brands at the Coast’s premier fashion and lifestyle markets, The Village Markets. Born in Burleigh Heads and now reaching the farthest corners of the world, Peony Swimwear follows a progress-over-perfection model when it comes to sustainability. Their commitment to ethical fashion is derived from a deep love of the environment and local community. Their approach is “to create consciously, engage in ongoing reflection and continually drive progress towards sustainability, circularity, inclusivity and transparency”.

All pieces are made from recycled materials, packed in compostable and biodegradable materials and all excess stock and samples are donated to social enterprise Worn For Good. These practices, along with plenty more have earned the brand a Carbon Neutral status and, with Becky at the helm, the business continues to progress as a leading ethical fashion label. Outland Denim is another Gold Coast-born brand committed to the care and protection of the planet and its people. Founded in 2011 as a way to combat the human trafficking trade by creating a haven for its survivors, and with a passion for good jeans, Outland Denim also became the first Australian, and second denim brand globally, to become B Corporation™ certified meaning the brand a is leader in the global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy. Not only that, every Outland Denim piece is made with the cleanest raw materials sourced from across the globe with care and integrity by designers who are passionate about sustainability. They prioritise sustainable, vegan-friendly raw materials, and biodegradable packaging and all staff are given fair, safe and fulfilling employment. Each year Outland Denim releases a detailed report outlining the full extent of their social impact so absolutely nothing is hidden from consumers. They are a brand truly leading the way when it comes to ethical fashion and one for the Gold Coast to be extremely proud of.

Committed to sourcing and producing jewellery with a lower impact on the environment, YCL uses moissanite stones over diamonds as they are not mined meaning there is no risk of unsustainable gem mining, lack of rehabilitation to the environment, exploitation of human labour, or direct support of conflict. Prae in Tugun’s Cornerstone Stores precinct is home to a carefully curated collection of sustainable fashion, accessory and lifestyle brands and is the first of its kind on the Gold Coast. SAFELY SUNKISSED WRI T TEN BY KIRRA S MI TH
Queensland summers are synonymous with sunshine and time spent outdoors and, for as long as we’ve been known as ‘the sunshine state’, so too has the quest for the perfect year-round tan. Now more than ever though, we’re being warned about the risks associated with increased exposure to the sun, particularly in a place like the Gold Coast where she’s beaming down on us more often than not.

Fortunately, the Gold Coast is also the birthplace of several world-class brands who have created some incredible products to both protect our skin from the sun and safely give us that sweet, sun-kissed tan we so desire. Nikki Mitchell is one Gold Coaster creating industryleading products in the world of self-tan. She is an awardwinning beautician and makeup artist who has worked with countless international celebrities, sports stars, musicians, and influencers throughout her 20 years in the industry. Nikki’s foray into the world of entrepreneurialism came after realising she was waiting too long for her tan to develop, and not being able to find a brand that could emulate that perfect golden glow. And so, she created a world-first - the 15 Minute Tan At Home - which quickly skyrocketed in popularity and is now used worldwide by the likes of Adele, Mandy Moore, Jennifer Lawrence, Anna Paquin and our favourite local, Chloe Fisher.
Nikki Mitchell
Her product range also includes a 1 Hour Tanning Mousse, Cucumber Hydration Face Tan Mist, Dry Oil Instant Bronzer, a Coconut Tan Extender and Gradual Tan, as well as a range of products for professional use. Find out more about Nikki’s awe-inspiring work at @nikki_mitchell_skin. Bella Bronze Tan founder, Jasmine Scarr first started her mobile tanning business in 2007, and whilst it was a success, Jasmine wasn’t completely satisfied with the products she was using on her clients. “After being in the sunless tanning industry for seven years I wanted to make a difference to the way tans looked, developed and what formulas were being used. I started researching the brands I was using and was blown away by the nasties in them” she says. These days Bella Bronze, offer a range of self-tanning products made of natural and organic ingredients in their purest forms – 100% vegan, cruelty-free and without any nasty smells. Try the 14% Ultra Dark Violet Mousse enriched with plenty of hydrating ingredients to give you that “just got back from Europe” glow, the 12% Mocha Self-Tanning Mousse renowned for its true-to-colour formula, or the 2in1 Gradual Tan enriched with cocoa and shea butter and a hydrating Face Tan Mist. And with products used in over 1200 salons globally, Jasmine knows a thing or two about the benefits of safe tanning. “Spray tans are UV free, take less than 10 minutes to apply and last over a week. We are finding so many sun bakers are making the change to a safer alternative to getting a healthy glow.” With salons located in Biggera Waters, Mermaid Beach, and Brisbane, it’s so easy to just pop in whenever you need a tan top up.

Eco Tan is a certified organic skincare brand created at Gold Coaster Sonya Driver’s kitchen bench over a decade ago. Today, the brand is beloved world-wide for not only their range of organic tanning products but skincare too. Face Tan Water helps to clear your skin while delivering that sparkly glow, Hempitan Body Tan Water is supercharged with natural ingredients and offers the darkest tan in the range, Cacao Tanning Mousse delivers a natural honey bronze glow, Invisible Tan is a luxurious moisturiser and tanning cream, and Winter Skin is a gradual tan and hydrator for natural, glowing skin. Eco Tan’s range also includes an Exfoliating Glove and Applicator Mitt as well as an at-home Spray Tan Kit. Everything you could possibly need for the look of a natural tan without the nasty sun exposure. Find Sonya and the team at @ecotan. It goes without saying that the allure of a sun-kissed glow should never outweigh the importance of safe sun tanning. THE LANGHAM The Langham – built in the sand dunes in a quiet little enclave between Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach – was always going to be a huge deal. It cost $1.4 billion to complete (it’s split across three towers) and is the first absolute beachfront hotel built on the Coast in 30 years. But it lives up to the hype, and then some. Guests can relax with a cocktail at the bar by the lagoon-style pool, while stylish rooms all look out over either the surf, or the green hinterland. There’re two great restaurants on-site too, including one of the world’s best Cantonese restaurants, T’Ang Court (its Hong Kong cousin has three Michelin-stars). langhamhotels.com/en/the-langham/gold-coast/

Come summertime, the fondly nicknamed “Tally Creek” is absolutely heaving with rubber-ringers, swimmers and cabanas. This caravan park is waterfront and protected and offers views to the leafy and culturally significant Burleigh Headland to the east and the hinterland to the west. You’ll find a boat ramp and netted swimming hole opposite, three on-site swimming pools (heated seasonally) and a patrolled surf beach just round the corner. While the park has waterfront cabins, the Tallebudgera Creek Tourist Park is perhaps best known for its camping – offering prime creekside spots for caravans and campervans, plus barbeques, a playground, rec room and even a tennis court.
You can spot the Nobby Beach Holiday Village by its distinctive 35-metre blue and yellow waterslide that snakes round the park on the Gold Coast Highway. While the slide is guaranteed to keep the kids happy for hours, the village also offers a hub of games, movies and a kids club room, not to mention its very own “Ninja Warrior” playground, and a dedicated program of activities during the school holidays. Grown-ups are more likely to be enticed by the two heated pools, barbecue spots, and crucially, the seaside suburb of Nobby Beach, just a short dash across the road, with its trendy strip of bars, speakeasies and eateries.
If you can’t be bothered cooking – or you’re dying for a coffee – then a short walk under the bridge will take you to the Tallebudgera Surf Club and to the sweet treats of Custard Canteen bakery. If you do enjoy a BYO situation, there are camping and caravan sites too.
Just a stone’s throw from the screams and thrills of the Gold Coast’s famous theme parks is this family heaven. In fact, it could’ve even been designed by a kid. BLENDING BEAUTY AND EDUCATION Robina has a new beauty and hair salon unlike any other - Nature’s Escape. At first glance it might appear to be just another salon, but a closer look reveals an extraordinary secret that sets it apart from the rest. Nature’s Escape is a nurturing hub for budding talents in the realm of beauty and hairdressing, operated by TAFE Queensland students under the watchful eye of their experienced mentors. It offers a one-of-a-kind fusion of relaxation and education.
Nature's Escape is also a member of the Sustainable Salon initiative which is the first comprehensive resource recovery program designed for the salon environment. Through the program most of the salon’s waste is recycled and hair clippings go towards cleaning up oil spills, while ponytails go to create wigs for cancer or alopecia patients.
Located on level 1 of TAFE Queensland’s Robina campus, Nature's Escape offers an array of high-quality barbering, hairdressing, and beauty services to the public at prices that make self-pampering accessible to everyone.
So, next time you're due for a rejuvenating facial, blow wave or even a beard trim for the gents; consider booking an appointment at Nature's Escape. Your visit isn't just about self-care; it's about nurturing the talents of tomorrow while being mindful of our planet.
The best part is it’s not just about getting a haircut, a facial, or a massage; it's about being part of someone’s vibrant learning experience.
And if you’re a student aspiring to become a beauty professional, TAFE Queensland's Robina campus is where dreams take shape and careers take flight. It's where the classroom meets the real world. Here the students are the stars of the show, and you’re invited to be a part of the magic.
TAFE Queensland Gold Coast education team leader, Gabrielle Marotte said students are supervised by fully qualified hairdressing and beauty therapy teachers who guide them through the intricacies of their craft. “With the teachers’ expert supervision, students gain confidence and finesse as they interact with clients and tackle the challenges that arise in professional settings,” says Ms Marotte.
For bookings call (07) 5581 8392 from 8am–4pm, Monday to Friday.
“You might find that your haircut or facial takes a little longer than expected, but that's because the focus isn't solely on speed but on delivering quality results that meet industry standards” she adds. “We rely on the support of the community to assist our students in developing the skills necessary to become a fully qualified practitioner and every client is truly appreciated and cared for by the students.”

Throughout the year, Nature's Escape has an evolving menu of services. This means that each visit could be a unique experience, as you witness students' growth and skill development, offering a fresh perspective every time. The availability of services also changes with the academic term, depending on student progression and educational delivery. “It’s competency-based training, so once the educator deems them ready to do practical, they would start on clients,” says Ms Marotte. Don’t expect these salons to look like your typical classroom setup; they're fully functional beauty centres, complete with all the equipment you'd expect in a professional setting. From hairdressing stations to nail bars and beauty therapy rooms, these facilities offer an authentic experience.

THE STAFFORD BROTHERS: FROM GOLD COAST TO GLOBAL SUCCESS

THE ARTS
Get ready to turn up the volume and dive into the electrifying world of the Stafford Brothers! With their infectious beats and chart-topping hits, this dynamic duo has been taking the music industry by storm. From their latest buzzworthy track "Bruk Up" to their unforgettable collaborations with artists like Lil Wayne, the Stafford Brothers are a force to be reckoned with. In this exclusive interview, we chat with Chris, one half of the dynamic duo, delving into their inspiration, upcoming projects, and their deep connection to the vibrant music scene of the Gold Coast. I N TER VI EW BY KA R E N K I NNE R S LY
"Bruk Up" has been generating incredible buzz from fans and critics alike. Chris, can you share what sets it apart from your previous releases?
You've also worked with some incredible artists throughout your journey. Who’s one of your most memorable collaborations?
Bruk Up features Kris Kiss from England who was also on another one of our songs “Detonate.” We really focussed on a sound that we could play in our sets. We also collaborated with Deorro, G4bba feat. Alè Kumá – Cascabel, and we got to debut the song on the Main Stage of Ultra in Miami with Deorro, which was a huge moment for us this year!
One of our most memorable collaborations was with Lil Wayne. Working with an iconic artist like him was huge for our career. It’s still one of our most successful songs and it happened early on when we moved to America. I remember flying from Australia to LA to film the music video for “Hello”. Straight from the airport to film in our house with Christina Milian, Lil Wayne, loads of people and two live kangaroos!
As GC locals, what do you love most about calling this place home - how has it influenced your music and overall lifestyle?
We love the weather and the beach. Our music has always been uplifting and happy and I would say the weather is a huge part of that. We are also into keeping fit and the Gold Coast is one of the best places in the world to do that. We believe it’s all about a balance of extremes. Out partying late and then sweat it out at the gym or beach. The Gold Coast boasts a vibrant music scene. How has being a part of this community shaped your career and artistic vision?
The Gold Coast is where our career began. We’ve run club nights, owned nightclubs and played countless festivals that have shaped our sound over the years. The reason we’re still DJ’ing is only because of the amazing Gold Coast community supporting us and giving us a career. The scene has constantly evolved, and we have forward-thinking world-class venues that take advantage of the amazing weather the Gold Coast has to offer. I also think the Gold Coast cultivates a great local music scene with Radio Metro. It supports Gold Coast and Australian artists, and they are on point with their musical selection. You've performed in various cities around the world. Are there any venues or festivals that hold a special place in your hearts?
Ibiza always holds a special place for us. We went there for the first time years ago and that influenced the sound we DJ’d. When we came back to the Gold Coast, we started running a nightclub and playing the sound we’d heard there. We are still going back and were there in Ibiza this year for three months.
Who is your biggest inspiration in the music industry?
I respect a lot of the artists like Tiesto, and David Guetta who have had such long careers. To achieve the success they have already had and continue to be at the top of the game is impressive. I look for inspiration everywhere so I am also inspired by the new wave of artists that are coming through. The music industry is constantly evolving. How do you stay ahead of the game and continue to innovate in your sound and performances?
Seeing other artists perform can spark an idea or add to our performance. These days, social media is a way to be ahead of the game. Everything is constantly evolving. If you look at the example of how we consume music, it has gone from vinyl, to CD’s, to downloads, to today’s streaming industry. Everyone had to evolve. AI will be something that will change the music industry. We have no idea how it will yet, but we will have to evolve and adapt to the new technology. The best thing to do is not resist it, open your mind to the change and learn. You’re either going to be left behind or you can adapt, innovate, and evolve. Can you give us a sneak peek into any exciting projects or collaborations in the pipeline?
We have a new song out soon called “Turn Up The Volume” with Taylr Renee. We’re pumped about the song as it’s a new direction in sound. We’re constantly evolving, and this will lead into a more uptempo sound for 2024. Finally, what's next for the Stafford Brothers? What goals are you currently pursuing?

A major focus for us is Jack MGMT. It’s our management company that looks after nine artists such as Timmy Trumpet, Restricted and Dimatik. Check it out on www.jackmgmt.com. We have made many mistakes in our career because we didn’t have guidance. We learnt from those mistakes and our goal is to guide our artists, so they don’t make the same ones as us. LOCALE FAVES: Favourite beach Around the North Burleigh/Miami area is our go to. Favourite local coffee spot M.A.I.D. - An amazing hidden coffee shop that does one of the best espressos on the Gold Coast. Without question, it has the best barista on the GC! Favourite place to escape We always go to our parents’ house to escape. Our Mum “Trish The Dish” is an amazing cook and always puts on an amazing home cooked meal. Time with friends and family at our parents’ house is the best way to unwind and we always roll out of there full after eating far too much! Favourite local restaurants or places to dine Rick Shores is a winner when we come back from overseas. We always over order on the bug rolls and dumplings. We always get the chicken sandwich at Tarte in Burleigh (and maybe a burrito if we’re over ordering with Nate Myles!) Social Eating House and the Lamb Shop always gets a run in Broadbeach. Special mention to “Trish the Dish" who is our private chef for home cooked meals. Favourite spot to chill and have a blast with family and friends? We seem to never chill when we are on the Gold Coast and always end up out somewhere. Cali Beach is always a great time, and we always seem to end up at Nightjar. If we did chill it would be on Burleigh Hill … and then end up at Nightjar.

FOUNDATIONS OF JOY

THE ARTS
Bursting onto the scene in joyous colour and cementing herself as the literary darling of the country, is the Gold Coast’s own Holly Ringland. Raised on the southeast coast of QLD – childhood memories of the Broadwater in the 80s and 90s front of mind as she writes the stories that have captured our hearts. WRI T TEN BY DONN A R I S H TO N -P OT TER
With the breathtaking Lost Flowers of Alice Hart gripping us all on page and screen - and with the likes of Hollywood royalty Sigourney Weaver taking up a leading role in the miniseries aired on Amazon Prime - Ms Ringland was never going to slip quietly under our radars. Effervescent and warm – one must only Look around at the crowds at the writer’s festivals, or at her recent national book launch, to see that collectively, we are enamoured. Her writing itself is indicative of her personality – honest, down-to-earth, openhearted, and something altogether magical. She’s the self-effacing talent who’s been caught off guard by the overwhelming response to her work, something she’s been slogging at in earnest since 2014 but which truly began as a seed planted by her beloved mother at the age of three. The enchanting, The Seven Skins of Esther Wildling followed The Lost Flowers as Ringland’s second novel, and now she has gifted us The House That Joy Built, her first foray into non-fiction – encouraged by her publisher, Catherine Milne, who saw she had so much more wisdom to impart. The cover alone bursting with as much joy as the butterflies she wears on her arms and in her hair. This is not, she emphasises, a step-by-step guide to creativity (plenty has been said on this subject already), nor is it a manual on finding joy for that matter - it purely is Ringland’s personal experience about how she discovered joy through her own creativity, and the blocks she had to push through to get there. In saying that, this book is utterly transformative and offers a jump-start for the rest of us whose desire to create is flattened by fear. ‘What if fear wasn’t the first thing we listened to?... What if we didn’t listen to all the reasons we can’t do something?’ she ponders.
‘bad’ ideas, of being ‘too much’. Creativity she believes, is our path out of that darkness. The directions we need are hidden inside our choices. This book is an invitation to return ‘home’ to the creative place we resided in with ease in our childhoods. After living between Australia and the UK for ten years, Ringland has been based in the Yugambeh region of southeast Queensland since 2020. It is here she finds sanctuary; and in a gloriously renovated 1968 Olympic Riviera caravan named ‘Frenchie’, in her mother’s garden, she writes. In all she does, Ringland is warm, relatable, and fully present. She lays her heart out in her work presenting her vulnerabilities and fears as a gift - and encourages us all to do the same. “When I write about joy,” she says, “I’m not only referring to the kind of joy that feels good… I am talking about the joy that floods us… that moves us to tears. The joy of feeling purpose and meaning… The joy of being understood, of feeling seen… The joy of naming what shames us, and the joy of believing we’re still, in all our imperfections, loveable. I’m talking about the joy of feeling.” The House That Joy Built is a voice calling to our hearts in slumber. Wake up! We can do the thing that scares us. We can open ourselves to joy in all its facets. It is a way back into our imaginations when we are stuck creatively. After all, “We are never as alone in our strangeness, as we think we are” says Ringland, “and we are often so much braver than we think.”
Written in just 70 days, Ringland defied her own inner critic, pushed through her fears and the looming dred of imposter syndrome, took lessons from a donkey sanctuary (read the book you’ll understand), and forged a glorious multi layered handbook in multi colour. This book is an invitation to become conscious that creativity is a home within us. We all have it. It’s in the clothes we choose to wear each day, the meals we decide to cook. It resides in how we love, how we parent, how we choose to use our voice. Creativity is already there; it is, she says, “what we have to offer each other in a world that’s burning – it’s a powerful act of resisting cynicism and scarcity. To choose to make art when there’s so much grief, despair, suffering, cruelty and tragedy in the world, is to choose to connect with the best parts of ourselves and each other as humans.” Hitting me square in the solar plexus is Ringland’s notion that creativity is the home we give our grief. It’s a place to rest our hearts and our hurts; “Joy and grief are inseparable” she says. “A house built by joy is one that would give grief a home”. It’s profound in its simplicity and truth. Ringland is one of us. And like us, she too has felt the gripping fear of vulnerability, of criticism and judgement from others, of not being good enough, of having 63

Sun, sea, surf… the Gold Coast is famous for many things, but not historically its art scene. Mint Art House - a collective of creatives - is helping to change the Glitter Strip’s reputation.
It may be the last in a row of warehouses but stepping through the doors of shed number 5 is like discovering a secret portal. This is Mint Art House where 14 creatives have sliced up the floorspace into mini studios in Burleigh Heads. At its mouth stands a white-walled gallery space bordered on one side by a large wooden bar; and overhead a large oil painting depicts the resident artists in party mode. Formed in 2019, the “Minties” are a motley crew of creatives that form part of a Gold Coast art scene that is quickly gaining pace and recognition. “I finally felt like there was a community of people like me,” says co-administer and resident Camille Manley on discovering Mint. “As an artist it can be a little bit of a solo or lonely venture, but in a space like this, it’s a collaborative environment. So many good ideas have been born just through having chats with each other. [We’re] stronger together.”

"I FINALLY FELT LIKE THERE WAS A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE LIKE ME,” The artists all chip in for rent, then use the shared gallery space to put on shows or to host workshops for the public, ranging from children’s workshops to life drawing sessions, as well as a Saturday gift shop. Plus, unlike your typical art gallery, visitors are invited to walk through the bowels of Mint to see the works in progress. “We didn’t realise people would want to see our studios,” Camille says with a laugh. “But wandering around the back you can have a look through Steve’s stash of oil paintings or all of Shmick’s spray paints, it’s fun to see how different people work.” The artists at Mint are at various stages of their careers - from emerging to established - and Camille says it is very democratic. “No one person is in charge,” she says. “And what I love about it is there’s this sense that you don’t have to leave the Gold Coast to become successful. Something like Mint is an important cog in the wheel of allowing artists to live where they love, and still be successful.” Ultimately, Camille says, Mint is there to celebrate the Gold Coast, its creatives and the art scene. “We’ve got some amazing artists on the Gold Coast,” she says. “We have this part of the city that is more diverse – the Gold Coast can be more than just surfing, shopping and theme parks.” @camillemanley_art Camille Manley
STEVE GORMAN Oil painter Numbats, phone boxes, carparks, pubs and cows – Steve Gorman (48) has a rather eclectic subject selection. But one constant theme is his long-standing love for the Glitter Strip. Predominately self-taught – using “mum’s oil paints” – the Dean Cogle portrait prize winner (2023) seeks to capture the drama and poetry in suburban Burleigh, often at night and in heavy shadow: a moonlit carpark, a Holden midburnout, a moody pub portrait. It is also Steve’s painting of his fellow Minties that proudly hangs above the bar - a celebration of friendship and the collective. “It is rare to get that many people in the same place and to all get along famously,” says Steve. “It’s fun, and you just want to turn up… which is the biggest hurdle in painting.” @gormanism

EMILY ROSE HASTIE Pyrographer Emily Rose Hastie (31) has an unusual practice. Instead of canvas or papyrus, she prefers to scorch her works straight into natural timbers, working with everything from chopping boards to giant single fins and wooden bird’s eggs. Using an electrified wood-burning iron, her pyrography paintings are inspired by local flora and fauna and her hometown coastline. Recently, Emily created larger-scale installations for SWELL Sculpture Festival including a 1.4m egg (A New Dawn, 2023), and a 2.6m-high surfboard fin (Ne Plus Ultra) – the latter earning her top honours for both the Emerging Artist and People’s Choice awards in 2022. So, what does she love about Mint? “It’s become a family,” says the founding member. “Mint is about connection, and there’s a definite communal energy that’s imbibed in the place. People feel the synergy when they come in from the outside, it’s something special”. @emilyrosehastie

RICHARD SCOTT Illustrator A self-confessed blow-in, the London-raised artist Richard Scott (41) now calls the Gold Coast home. In a sea of surfies and tradies, Richard struggled at first to find his people. His first visit to Mint was to take in an exhibition. “I was really impressed,” he says, “it was a proper hub and a real eyeopener because I was just sketching up at home, alone, when the kids were asleep.” Answering a call out for a new artist to join the collective, Richard was minted a Mintie in 2021. And from there things started to come together, with those sketchbooks turned into a solo show (Idle Hands), along with pieces in Currumbin’s SWELL Sculpture Festival (with the giant golf ball Fore!) and the Surface Street Art Festival in Miami. Today, the Gold Coast herself is his main muse. “When I got here, I became interested in the history of the city and the coast,” he says “and I realised that the best parts weren’t being celebrated.” Through his paintings and pen and ink illustrations, Richard looks to champion the coast today, using them as a way to understand and pay homage to his new home. @richard.scott.draws
