Locale Magazine is one!
It has been the most amazing year falling in love with the region I live in all over again, getting to know so many faces and businesses, and most importantly, showing off this amazing place to the locals and the visitors who flock here.
Being a Tweed Coast local, I chose to spotlight beautiful Cabarita (as the first of many stunning towns in this region we will continue to bring attention to) because to me and my beautiful family, this is summer. That headland, the glimpse of aqua ocean as you round the bend, surfers bobbing on their boards, and a truly vibrant little town bordering the beachfront.
I feel honoured to have met so many wonderful people behind some of the region’s most inspiring brands – businesspeople, makers, artists & creatives making the Northern Rivers the vibrant area it is.
I would also love to acknowledge my fabulous team - my editor, Donna, and the talented writers who have come alongside me and helped grow this idea into the flourishing magazine it is now. Without them I would not be able to produce these amazing pages.
After the year we’ve had, this issue is all about that Summer Lovin’ vibe we all know and seek – and in that title we pay homage to the beloved Olivia Newton John, whose ‘happy place’ was this land we call home. We were privileged to sit down with the beautiful Trudi Jaye, Olivia’s business partner and co-founder of Retreatment Botanics, to talk about changing an industry and why Australian botanicals are the ultimate ingredient for creating high efficacy natural skincare.
We’ve also included a much-needed wet weather plan because we know how temperamental Mother Nature can be! And what’s summer without some seafood and sparkling wines?! So, we bring you the best of both from Ballina to the border, in our pick of top restaurants, casual eateries and fabulous bars to check out along the way.
So, grab your picnic rug and head to the beach to enjoy reading our 5th issue - it is a bumper edition. Summer is here, get out and enjoy the Northern Rivers in all its glory. Enjoy the Locale love!

THE CHARM OF CABARITA BEACH
WRITTEN BY: KYLIE MICTHELL-SMITH
The picturesque coastal town of Cabarita, nestled between Pottsville to the south and Kingscliff to the north was voted Australia’s best beach in 2019 (10 Best Beaches - Brad Farmer AM, Tourism Australia) and we can understand why.
FEATURE 8
Image: Coastal Visions Photography
There’s a certain charm to this quintessential beachside village, with an array of independent shops, funky bars, global eateries, and a unique range of accommodation options to choose from.
The crowning glory of Cabarita is the stunning Norries Headland, home to an epic surf break and magnificent cliff top walk that sweeps across the Tweed Coast to the valley and mountains beyond. The beachside village has community at heart and welcomes visitors with open arms and minds.
The bustling high street is made up of a major supermarket and independent shops, including Caba Social, Fuel Bakehouse, Get the Scoop, No. 35 Kitchen and Bar, The Burrow, and Mist Gallery to name a few, with the stunning Tulum Home and award-winning restaurant Paper Daisy at Halcyon House bookending the strip.
As the sun rises over the coastal town grab a coffee at one of the many cafés and take
a stroll along main beach south towards the majestic headland and be immersed in nature as the coastal pathway meanders up the cliff.
For the budding surfer out there, the main beach has a clean long wave and for the more experienced paddler join the masses at Little Cove to catch that elusive set. If people watching is more your thing, the headland is the ideal place to reverse park your car and stay awhile.
The stairs that take you to the top of Norries Headland are ideal for fitness fanatics to run up and down, with panoramic views and a likely whale spotting from the top, an added bonus. Grab a takeaway lunch to enjoy on the headland with a choice of burgers, Japanese, Thai, baked goods, and health food options. After lunch take a bike ride or leisurely walk north along the beach pathway that joins Cabarita to Casuarina, with plenty to see and do along the way.
For those long hot days that turn into balmy ‘summer loving’ nights take a picnic on the point to capture the ocean breezes and stunning views across the Tweed Coast. Lay out a spread of local produce from the surrounding farms and pair with a locally brewed beer or botanical gin. Stay at The Hideaway glamping site for a chic camping option by the sea. Nestled on a parcel of land adjacent to the beach, you’ll feel like you’re camping but with all the deluxe trimmings of a resort stay.
Accommodating families, couples, and group bookings, with funky shipping containers upcycled into common areas, cruiser bikes and festoon lighting, it’s the ‘happening’ place to stay.
The award-winning Halcyon House is located beachfront in the centre of town and is as decadent as it is retro and relaxed in style. The luxe boutique rooms have been lovingly fitted out by Brisbane designer Anna Spiro, complementing the coastal charm of Cabarita.
FEATURE 9 SUMMER 2022/23
The hotel’s restaurant, Paper Daisy, has landmarked the region a destination for food - within a year of opening it was awarded a Hat as Australia’s best regional restaurant. Perfect for a long lunch by the sea or to enjoy a locally infused, botanical cocktail on the deck as night is falling.
For luxury apartment stays boasting ocean views, stay at Caba Break or The Beach Cabarita Apartments. Decked out with all the mod cons, the open plan, spacious design is ideal for families, with all the conveniences located close by.
Home to one of the most picturesque beaches and best surf breaks in the land, Cabarita has managed to retain its natural charm. A town where time and memories have stood still - reminiscent of a 50’s sun loving past with endless summer days and locals committed to preserving the natural environment and growing organically into the futurecreating a deep and beautiful sense of place.
Being voted ‘The Best Beach in Australia’ comes with a certain notoriety and popularity, but that’s the thing about Caba’, it beats to its own drum. As the town grows so does the community spirit and commitment to keep Cabarita special.
Whether you’re driving along the Tweed Coast Road heading south or cruising the motorway north from Byron Bay, Cabarita is central to all that the Tweed Coast and Valley has to offer. The ideal place to base yourself as you explore the stunning natural assets and food bowl of the Northern Rivers.

SUMMER LOVIN’ SKIN
WITH AUSTRALIAN BOTANICALS
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
It took one audacious vision and years of determination for two women to create change within an industry giant. Till then it had seemed impossible, but when the paths of Aussie icon Olivia Newton-John and skincare specialist Trudi Jaye crossed in 2015, their shared devotion in empowering women to seek beauty ‘from the inside out’, saw them join forces to create a unique product that would touch the world.
The late Olivia Newton-John was the cofounder of Gaia Retreat & Spa - a healing space in the beautiful Bundjalung hinterland of Byron Bay. Olivia had built it into one of the country’s leading wellness retreats - and Trudi Jaye joined the company after spending eleven years in New York, working and fine tuning her skills and experience in the skincare and wellness space. Olivia, passionate about inspiring women to feel confident in themselves, wanted to create a skincare range that provided natural solutions for all their skin concerns. Essential to her were products that were not only of an incredibly beautiful, high-end standard, but were also 100% results focused. It was here she turned to Trudi whose wealth of experience in the beauty and wellness industry was a perfect fit. “A holistic approach is integral to confidence” says Trudi, “this is where Olivia and I connected and were both deeply passionate.”
The product range took years to research and develop; integrity was of the utmost importance, as were clean ingredients that would transform the skin. Together, Olivia and Trudi were intent on creating the highest-efficacy formulas, rich in potent active ingredients, without toxins or harmful practices. They found all they needed in Australian botanicals.
FEATURE 12
“ “
“Our natives are special because they have not only evolved under harsh conditions over millions of years but thrived by developing intense defence systems. Australian botanicals (more so than anywhere else in the world) store amazing levels of antioxidants, and it is the potency of these natural ingredients which are transformational. Kakadu Plum for example, is the world’s richest source of natural vitamin C, and we find it here, in our own backyard.”
Whilst embracing Australia’s rich plethora of plants made sense, it was the sophisticated extraction method that took the potency of the ingredients to the next level. “We have harnessed cutting edge technology to preserve the molecules as they exist in the plant. By keeping them intact they stay highly potent and active and means we’re working with the design of nature, not against it.”
Another point of difference was that the range had to be vegan, cruelty free, ethical, and use zero palm oil. For Olivia – well known for her animal rights advocacy and dedication in campaigning for the natural environment – removing palm oil was nonnegotiable.
RETREATMENT BOTANICS - a truly divine,
professional-grade skincare range - which is the first in the world to be palm oil free and 100% certified by the Orangutan Alliance. All products are also certified Vegan, Cruelty Free and Australian Made. Creating an awareness for change in the industry may be the big picture mission for Retreatment Botanics, but just as important to its founders was its everyday use and the outcome to heal, protect, and rejuvenate skin health. The products address a range of skin issues, from hyperpigmentation to fine lines and wrinkles and all formulas utilise a high concentration of vitamins and antioxidants naturally found within Australian native botanicals - proving that you can get amazing results from skincare and be kind to the planet.
Trudi, the innovative force behind the formulation, branding and fast-growing success of the range, was also passionate about adding the restorative and healing properties of pure essential oils. “It was important to create a true sensory journey in every Retreatment Botanics product and for them to carry holistic benefits to their use as well as the physical ones.”
“The world is insanely busy” she adds, “and people are losing a real sense of
connection to self. A skincare ritual helps us to slow down, to surrender our stresses, inspire our spirit, and ultimately to love and appreciate our bodies.” It’s obvious this brand is so much greater than a skincare range. And, with Trudi Jaye at the helm of Retreatment Botanics, we know Olivia’s vision and legacy is in safe hands.

YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE WE ARE MAGIC PAYING HOMAGE TO AN ICON
OCEAN WARRIORS
WRITTEN BY: ALISON BONE
Based at a sanctuary on the banks of North Creek Ballina, the team at Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue (ASTR) are on a mission to reduce the human impact on marine life through RESCUE, REHABILITATION, EDUCATION, AND RESEARCH. Their interactive tours are perfect for kids, or anyone who wants to learn more about protecting our precious marine environment.
One of the best things about living in the Northern Rivers is the incredible marine and river wildlife that we share space with. Sadly though, human impact takes its toll, and from the period 2019 – 2021 alone, Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue (ASTR) carried out 1349 seabird rescues, 349 turtle rescues and 81 sea snake rescues.
We visited the peaceful sanctuary to meet General Manager Olly Pitt, who has been involved with ASTR since 2013. She explains that climate change is the biggest threat to marine life right now. “As the sea warms it becomes more acidic, which affects the seagrass beds – an important food source for turtles. Less turtles, means less food for sharks, who play a vital role in keeping nature in balance through their role as apex predators.” The rise in extreme weather events associated with climate change also causes multiple threats to all marine life. Floods contaminate the water, killing fish and destroying habitat, but drought is equally devastating as it lowers fish stock and reduces breeding grounds.
At a more local level, Olly adds that “Entanglement in fishing lines and hooks is the greatest danger, particularly for seabirds.” ASTR saw a huge spike in seabird entanglements during the covid era, with so many people taking to fishing as a permitted outdoor activity. While seasoned fishermen know what to do when a bird
gets caught on a hook or line, amateur fishermen are more likely to panic and cut the line, leading to a slow painful death for the bird.
So, what can we do to reduce our impact on wildlife? “We can’t all be eco warriors, but as a community we can learn from our mistakes and do better,” says Olly. Starting with being more conscious about what we consume, as plastic ingestion is another big problem facing marine life. We all know the drill - reduce, reuse, recycle. And when it comes to fishing, the message is strong, “don’t cut the line” - call the ASTR hotline. Education is key and interactive sanctuary tours are a fun way for kids to learn how to protect the environment, and to meet the rescued marine life, including permanent resident, Frankie the freshwater turtle – the sweetest, friendliest little turtle you could ever imagine.
Olly’s passion for her role and the animals she rescues is palpable. “You don’t save the world by saving one animal, but you can change that animal’s world,” she says, while acknowledging that it’s not always a happy ending for the rescues. “You can only do what you can do.” Her favourite part of the job? “Release days just don’t get old,” she says with a smile. “It’s exactly the same feeling every time, that moment they go, you get that OMG feeling… we changed that animal’s life.”
A volunteer organisation, ASTR partners with the Lewis Foundation and donations are always welcomed, especially now with plans to rebuild the turtle hospital. You can also come for a tour ($8), or sign up as a volunteer. For more information check the website seabirdrescue.org.au And call 0428 862 852 for emergency rescue.
“YOU DON’T SAVE THE WORLD BY SAVING ONE ANIMAL, BUT YOU CAN CHANGE THAT ANIMAL’S WORLD.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!
WRITTEN BY: DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
Everyone loves a celebration but isn’t there something truly special about first birthdays. A celebration of making it through the sleepless nights, the worries, the stumbles, the growth and all the firsts.
Locale Mag is the brainchild of Karen Kinnersly, a talented designer with 25 years’ experience under her belt who, after seeing so many local businesses struggle during the COVID lockdowns, spent her sleepless nights dreaming up a crazy idea — a creative way to help support the community of artisans, growers, restaurants, and makers around her.
“I loved living in this beautiful area and just wanted to show everyone we still had so much to offer. The idea of a print magazine during COVID seemed utterly ridiculous, but I wanted something people could pick up, to feel, to be inspired by – in my mind I saw beautiful imagery and stories that that celebrated the abundance of creativity, lifestyle, beauty and wonders this region has to offer - the allure of “Living like a Local” for visitors, and something extra to discover for those of us who call this place home.”
Alongside Karen’s design prowess, a small gaggle of fun, fabulous and endlessly gifted local writers have gathered to become a team - seeking out the curious, the courageous, the dazzling and most delightful hidden gems in our region - hoping to give our readers, some fresh eyes and inspiration when it comes to getting out and about in the area.
Of course, wcould never have predicted how this year would play out and, with edition #2 coming out just as the floods hit, things looked dire. Yet, on the back of the worst floods in history, our team were encouraged by endless tales of courage and bravery in the face of such devastation, and it only made us more resolved to shine a light on the amazing stories out there - the businesses and communities, the artists and individuals who banded together to pull each other through.
Now, as the end of one full revolution of the sun is upon us, we’ve been taking a moment to look back and appreciate all the fabulous people we’ve met, stories we’ve uncovered and businesses we’ve discovered, and we felt a celebration was in order. So just like a
grown-up mag we threw ourselves a cover shoot, collaborating with some of our favourite business discoveries this year – the ever-talented and delightful Sal Singh, who shot our beautiful cover and team images, the artistic genius that is Wandering Folk provided their magical picnicware, and the fabulous Ginger Picnics showed us exactly how a picnic on the headland should be done! Topping off that glorious day was a beautiful gift from the gorgeous team at Daughters of India who treated each of us to one of their stunning, summery dresses to wear.
And, as we twirled in our floaty dresses, the sun shone, the ocean sparkled, the surfers surfed, and we captured the essence of everything we love about living here in this special place and vowed to do it all over again next year.
So, raise a glass with us if you will, and together, here’s to many more!

Taking up prime real estate, the thriving precinct delivers an exciting line-up of local retailers and international brands, spanning dining, fashion, beauty and art.

One of the laneway’s most anticipated openings is popular Asian diner Light Years, which relocated from its original location in Lawson Arcade. The Jonson Lane iteration welcomes an expanded food and drinks menu, executed by new Head Chef Joachim Borenius (ex Mjølner, Sydney). Bold and playful flavours shine in their signature share plates and unique cocktails, and juxtapose the restaurant’s refined, contemporary interiors designed by Sarah Ellison and Studio Plenty.
A short stroll down the bustling laneway brings visitors to Pixie Food & Wine, a coastal Italian eatery by the Light Years team, including restaurateurs James Sutherland and Kim Stephen (Light Years, Moonlight, Frankies), together with Head Chef Matteo Tine (previously of Grossi Florentino). The restaurant combines Byron Bay’s leisurely ambience with upmarket city dining, bringing a modern and coastal twist to traditional Italian cuisine.
After a laid-back lunch, diners can relax over a vino or two at the new Parisian-inspired natural wine bar from the group at Byron’s Luna Wine Store, Bar Heather. Expect a locally focused and snackheavy menu, paired with some of the world’s best wines.
Locals warmly welcome the arrival of Byron Bay’s newest hair destination, Bloe. It’s the first blow-dry salon for Australia’s leading hair agency EdwardsAndCo and offers complete glam services for a night of wining and dining in Jonson Lane.
When it comes to fashion, contemporary clothing and lifestyle label Nagnata delivers with its first Australian flagship store. The brand’s spirit comes to life in an LED-light gallery-like showroom where the clothes and colours speak as art. Paying homage to the brand’s ecoconscious sensibilities, materials are naturally sourced and handcrafted. Australian-owned leisurewear connoisseurs Venroy and Deji Studios also take up residency in the laneway, along with premium international lifestyle brand Saturdays NYC.
The architectural design of Jonson Lane leverages Byron Bay’s unique coastal setting and relaxed lifestyle, providing a thriving laneway-style retail experience. Drawing on existing vegetation, Myers Elliot designed the laneway to be the development’s focal point, with resident balconies sitting above creating a sense of community and buzz for visitors and residents alike. Not to mention being in the heart of Byron Bay, a short stroll from the beach and minutes from the supermarket and nearby cafés and shops. Jonson Lane redefines the way locals live in Byron Bay and is set to become the hottest precinct in town. Indulge your senses in this buzzing food and retail experience, designed for the community and loved by all.

Every year 1 billion plastic bottles are bought, used once, and thrown away across Australia. Shockingly, research finds that 89% of these bottles end up in landfill or worse, the ocean – that’s one truck of garbage every single minute into our oceans. This is where Mike Smith comes in – a top bloke with the audacious aim of eliminating single use plastics from our households.
Mike founded Zero Co in 2019 after coming up with an idea to make planet-friendly personal care and home-cleaning products
that get conveniently refilled after use. Based locally, this Northern Rivers company with a global conscience, is on a mission to ‘UNTRASH THE PLANET’ one plastic container at a time. Making the products user friendly and trendy at the same time has opened the market for Zero Co to boldly take some ground on the War on Waste Movement. How does it work? Inside your first order from Zero Co, you’ll find a set of forever bottles made from ocean, beach and landfill waste and a set of refill pouches
made from recycled plastic. It works by a four-step process: you order, they deliver, you return using the reply-paid satchel and they refill. Saving the planet has never been more convenient!
Zero Co also make it super simple for the consumer with a user-friendly website, plenty of refill options and a deliver straight-to-your-door service. A new product range is updated regularly on the website and include added environmental extras like stainless steel pegs and recycled fibre dish clothes. And, if you get stuck, a ridiculously friendly team are always on hand to chat to.
Besides being single-use plastic free, all products are made in Australia using plantbased formulas with no harmful chemicals, and are vegan, cruelty-free, and grey water safe. And now that Zero Co is available in Byron Bay Woolworths, as well as various IGAs and a growing list of boutique retailers across the Northern Rivers, it really is that easy to give single-use plastic the flick and to be part of the solution. Want to do more? There are a host of ways to get involved with Zero Co, through Work Waste Challenges, Sustainable Schools programs and even Untrashed Eco Tours. Check out the website for more details. We have to start somewhere… what better time than now!

A FARM AND A TABLE
WRITTEN BY: KYLIE MICTHELL-SMITH
to Table’ and ‘Paddock to Plate’ are the buzz words of todayput simply it means fresh, locally sourced food delivered to your table.
Take a drive from the Tweed Coast into the Tweed Valley along the picturesque Cudgen Road and you’ll experience one of the newest and most authentic ‘farm to table’ restaurants the region has to offer. Perched high above the Cudgen Plateau, Farm & Co popped up recently and is a stunning indoor/outdoor venue set on a 52-acre working farm.
Local family the Kettles began ploughing the fertile land back in 2002, previously an avocado farm. “We grow food using sustainable practises. We aim to reduce food mileage, our carbon footprint and we don’t use harmful chemicals. We believe this is the future and the best way to grow and support healthy communities” Farm & Co owner Michelle Kettle said.
Michelle grew up around a family of gardeners and, with a Bachelor of Health Science, she knows her stuff from the ground up. Currently studying biological and organic farming, her passion is real food delivered direct from the source.
Farm & Co’s mission is to educate, grow and share wholefood to the local community and visitors alike. Bringing up four children of her own in and around the
family farm, Michelle knows the future of her farm is in safe hands.
Experience the farm’s pop-up produce store where you can source organic fruit and vegetables, fresh eggs, farm honey, sourdough bread and locally made condiments, plus a whole lot more. Wander around the property at your leisure and meet the farm’s friendly animals along the way, it’s highly likely you’ll spot Michelle harvesting her latest crop.
The towering sunflower fields dotted around the farm are a popular place to grab that perfect Instagram shot as the sun sets over the rolling pastures, with dreamy mountain views and the ocean as the backdrop.
The newly opened ‘Farm & Co’ restaurant is the place to be for a long lunch, offering an authentic dining experience and a menu bursting with local produce, direct from the surrounding farms to your table.
The organic setting is all about the land, looking out onto the lush paddocks and undulating landscape you get to see where your food is coming from.
A team of hospitality pros have been engaged to spearhead the launch of the
new ‘Farm & Co’ venture ensuring top notch service, good food and welcoming vibes. Heading up the team is Mark Wilson from local hospitality group Perfect Last Bite. (Formerly of Spice Den, Taverna, Bombay Cricketers Club, Osteria fame –now Ancora, The Acre Boomerang Farm and Lolita’s Mexican Cantina).
Along with the talented Rachel Duffy (Former General Manager at Icebergs Dining Room, Bondi) and current co-owner of award-winning Italian restaurant No. 35 in Cabarita.
Add to the mix Manager Tim Coleman (formerly of 3 Chef Hatted restaurant Rockpool in Sydney), a wine enthusiast with front of house charm and a wealth of knowledge, and you’ve got yourself an experienced team where no stone or particle of soil will be left unturned.
The impressive Kitchen team is headed up by Executive Chef Armando Enriquez Icaza from Mexico who also oversees Lolita’s and the weddings for the group. Working alongside talented Chef Amy Brown (formerly Rick Shores) together they have created a delicious wholefood menu with a contemporary twist of local flavours.

Farm & Co restaurant aims to educate, inspire, and nourish guests with an authentic farm and food offering. The Locale team were fortunate enough to attend the recent tasting plate preview and by all accounts it delivered on food, service, and setting – oh, and did we mention the natural wine list is the bee’s knees.
With a styled fit out the open plan dining room has a rustic chic feel, complimented by warm hues, glass sliders and country style furnishings that reflect the natural surrounds.
Devouring the menu one fluffy Pizza Fritta at a time, our food journey begun with a deli style array of local cheeses, cured meats and house made pickles. The main course comes out on rustic wooden boards and there’s plenty to go around. Generous portions of locally sourced lamb and sweet potatoes are topped off with lashings of house made spicy horseradish jus. The talented chefs are busily preparing food before your eyes and with a friendly front of house team, it’s an enjoyable experience from the moment you enter the farm gate.
The tasty sides menu is literally a virtual walk around the farm and includes roasted carrots, charred broccoli and smokey potatoes. To finish we devour a dessert of our dreams, orange and almond cake with white chocolate, milk crumb and kumquats sourced from local farmer Buck, down the road.
That’s the thing about Farm & Co, it’s a whole community vibe, creating a
connection to the land through food; it’s all about the people, the place. Where time is not of the essence, and you can take it slowly, unwind and savour the unique flavours of the Northern Rivers.
Farm & Co is a short drive to an array of stunning beaches dotted along the Tweed Coast, a great place to walk off your long table lunch. Stay awhile and take a short drive further along from the farm, where you can visit a tropical fruit farm, brewery and gin distillery.
Northern Rivers is home to an array of award-winning dining options and is in a natural food bowl that sits within the vast green caldera. Blessed with an ideal climate the region grows some of the freshest and unique produce in the country.
Visit Farm & Co and spend the day getting to know your farmer, shop at the local produce store, gather your family and friends and book a long table food and farm experience to sample all the region has on offer. Farm & Co have created a unique tasting menu that is affordable and delicious at the same time.
Bravo to Michelle and her family for growing the food we love to eat and for engaging a specialised local team of hospitality pros like PLB Group to oversee the restaurant.
We’re excited to watch this latest kid on the Northern Rivers foodie block grow into a sustainable future and beyond. Discover more at farmandco.com.au Images by Jess Kearney

HOT OFF THE GRILL: MOONLIGHT BRINGS JAPANESE HIBACHI TO BYRON BAY
Bay Lane has recently welcomed Moonlight, a moody Japanese Hibachi grill and wine bar offering traditional Japanese cuisine and beverages, along with textured, monochromatic interiors.
Moonlight Hibachi Grill and Wine Bar is an intimate 45-seat restaurant and bar delivering modern Japanese and biodynamic wines picked according to the luna cycle.
The venue features Japanese-inspired architecture accompanied by a range of textures like plasterwork, stainless steel, concrete, cork, and timber, while the venue’s lighting has been designed to narrow your focus to artfully plated dishes.
The menu takes flavours from classical Japanese cuisine and reinterprets them into unexpected and punchy dishes, which rotate regularly. Broken into three sections, the offering includes a raw bar, featuring seafood classics like tuna and kingfish, and watermelon with ponzu and shiso; Hibachi with yakitori and scallops; and sides, including furikake fries and a
pickled cucumber dish which is not to be overlooked!
The wine list, curated by Sean Duncan, holds true to authentic Japanese influences with an offering of biodynamic wines picked according to the lunar cycle: crisp and aromatic to pair with the raw dishes, and vibrant, textural wines to match the smoke-driven flavours of the hibachi.
The cocktails menu showcases highballs made from homemade soda and natural garnishes with an extended offering of saké from some of the oldest breweries in the world, and for the seasoned drinker, an enviable range of Japanese whiskies.
Moonlight is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 5pm to late. moonlightbar.com.au

BAR CRAWL
NORTHERN RIVERS STYLE
WRITTEN BY: ALISON BONE
Fancy a drink? There is no shortage of great pubs in the Northern Rivers, but where do you go when you are more in the mood for innovative cocktails, boutique wines and an intimate bar experience. From atmospheric hole in the wall joints to breezy balconies and sumptuous lounges, here’s some cool venues to quench your thirst this summer (just don’t forget to designate a driver!)
Ballina to Lennox Head
Cooled by an afternoon breeze, The Wharf Bar and Restaurant is right on the waterfront in Ballina and offers a good selection of local spirits and beers. Can’t decide what to drink? Order The Paddle, featuring four different cocktails from the regions best-loved distillers - Brookies, Tintenbar Distillery, Husk Distillery & Lord Byron. Then stroll along the river to Mezza Lounge Bar and Restaurant, where a spacious terrace sets the perfect scene for a classic cocktail.
Heading north to Lennox Head, Mr Tipsy’s has a lively tropical Asian vibe with its evocative dragon murals and parasoladorned wall. Standout signature cocktails include the Nashi Pear and Cinnamon Sour. Prefer something spicy? How about the Chilli Bee with house-infused chilli vodka, Triple Sec, pineapple, kaffir lime and
agave? Across the road, Shorty’s Restaurant and Bar is an atmospheric hole in the wall bar, serving up local ales and spirits, as well as delicious craft cocktails like the Ginny Hendrix with elderflower, mint, cucumber, sage, and lime.
Byron Bay
The epitome of coastal chic, Loft Byron Bay has ocean views from its bright and breezy balcony on Jonson Street. Enjoy the cruisy vibe with a refreshing Watermelon Summertini, Gogi Sling or locally brewed beer, and take advantage of two daily happy hours with $14 Margaritas (4-6pm), and 2 for $20 Espresso Martinis (9-10pm). Looking for live music? Wander across the road to The Beach Hotel, where bands and DJs create a lively buzz every night of the week.

Loft Byron Bay Shortys DINE 32
Cellars is an alluring boutique wine bar around the corner on Bay Lane, serving up an impressive selection of organic and biodynamic wines from around the globe. Byron newbie, Bar Heather, further up on Jonson Lane, also focuses on natural wines – showcasing small independent wine producers to a lively soundtrack of Afrobeat and late era disco. And for a stylish Mediterranean lounge bar experience complete with live DJ sets, there’s no going past The Mez Club – think Greek Islands with a splash of Morocco thrown into the mix.
Murwillumbah to Burringbar
The drinking scene in Murwillumbah has long been dominated by grand old Art Deco pubs, but times are changing and exciting new things are afoot. For classy signature cocktails served in an elegant atmosphere, Tweed River House is a must, with their newly opened Lawn Bar the perfect spot for balmy summer evenings under the stars – try the Spritz made with Davidson Plum Liqueur, pinot gris, cranberry and strawberry gum leaf. Another lovely spot is the balcony at Regent Cinema – a gorgeous art deco building in the centre of town. The bar serves up organic/biodynamic wines and signature Slushie Margaritas, accompanied by live music on Saturdays from 6-8pm. And don’t miss the Spangled Drongo Brewery. When we visited it was a funky
pop-up bar within the M|Arts Precinct, but their new venue (right under the Regent Cinema) is scheduled to open in January and promises a cool industrial/skate vibe. Fiercely local, Spangled Drongo is making its mark and building a steady following with its sustainable and ethical approach to brewing. If beer isn’t your thing, try one of their exquisite cocktails, like the Lychee Caipirinha. Also within the M|Arts Precinct is stylish Bistro Livi, with a classy wine list that focuses on minimal intervention wine producers.
Continuing the wine theme across to Burringbar, The Brooklyn Tasting Room offers a cellar door style experience, serving up natural wines from some of the finest wineries in the world. There’s an impressive selection of craft beers too!
Cabarita to Tweed Heads
Back on the coast, Cabarita Beach SLSC Bar has great views and makes a lovely spot for a weekend drink, but for a more quintessential bar experience infused with a laid-back Cabarita vibe, settle into a booth at The Burrow. Local beers on tap include their own recently released Burrow Bitter, and the cocktails are fabulous – the Caba Colada, made with local artisan Soltera Blanco Rum will get you in a holiday mood. Open mic jam nights here are a blast.
In Kingscliff, soak up the retro vibe at the Pot and Pint, a European-inspired bar specialising in craft beers. Tequila
Tuesdays means $15 Margaritas all day, and you can catch live music on the weekends. Finally, if you prefer to create a ‘bar at home’ situation, head to Rob Roy Deli and Drinks on Bay Street, Tweed Heads. Run by a sommelier and a chef, you will find an incredible selection of wines, beers and spirits plus great deli items and readymade meals to snazz up a night in.

THE YOUTHFUL SOUL OF CABA
things coffee and food really took root. “Cabarita reminds me so much of the Caribbean Coast.” says Liv, “It’s a place where the mountains meet the sea. It can’t help but evoke that uplifting holiday vibe.”
But it’s not all holidays for this savvy businesswomen who has tirelessly poured her heart and soul into raising the bar when it comes to a vibrant café experience along the Tweed Coast.
It may have taken a cosmic pull to bring her here, but Cabarita also needed the youthful energy and joy that Liv and her amazing team bring to the beach strip. For Liv Brady, growing up in a large family meant food brought everyone together. And it’s those fond memories of her childhood - her dad’s luscious veggie garden and the buzz of her mum’s coffee shop in her country hometown of Dalby - that planted seeds for her future career. But it was her extensive travel through Europe and an exploration of the luscious coastline of Costa Rica where her love of all
Liv’s first foray in cafés was The Palm in Pottsville, which was a steep learning curve in business but, with a team of loyal and talented staff behind her she created a buzzing vibe that was a massive hit with the locals. “At first people thought I was too new to the town and too young, but I learnt I had to really back myself and just keep showing up.”
And it was this drive, determination, and unwavering insistence on heeding her inner guide that ultimately led Liv to Caba Social – an established local hotspot since 2019. “When Caba Social came up for sale it was divine timing, and exactly the opportunity for growth I needed at this point in my life.”
What’s more, Liv’s passion for getting involved in the community means she has exciting plans for Caba Social. And we can’t wait to see what goods she will serve up next.

FOR THOSE WHO WANDER

Wandering Folk is all about the journey, dreamy days spent wandering the world, picnic rug in hand. Born by the sea, imbued in nature, a reflection of that quintessential nomadic lifestyle - each handcrafted rug tells its own story.
SHOP 40
PREMIUM PICNIC ESSENTIALS, CRAFTED FOR YOUR EVERYDAY ADVENTURES
A tale of an artist who grew up in the Northern Rivers, living a life of adventure with her family, from sunlit mornings by the beach to starry nights spent by the campfire. A romantic in love with the great outdoors, but with a hankering for some creature comforts too, she drew inspiration from the natural surrounds to create otherworldly designs.
After completing a Bachelor of Arts in Textile Design at RMIT in 2011, Sharnee Thorpe began designing as a freelancer for various well-known Australian fashion and homewares labels (you’ll still find many of her hand drawn creations patterning the frocks and fashion of local fashionistas like Nine Lives Bazaar), but it was ultimately a rainy camping trip in 2015 that inspired her to produce a designer rug that would be pretty and practical at the same time. A piece of art that would travel with you wherever you may roam.
Fusing whimsical patterns with vintage florals Wandering Folk was born and has since become the go to brand for hand painted rugs as well as a bespoke collection of picnic essentials such as the stunning cushion range, adorned with Sharnee’s signature prints.
The design process from start to finish is a journey that begins with something that
catches Sharnee’s eye – vintage prints, a piece of art from a bygone era, trinkets and artifacts collected along the way. Sharnee is ever inspired by friendships, tales told and exploring lands far and wide. A mood board evolves as the story unfolds and the artist weaves her magic on her hand-painted designs. It is this collection of curiosities and experiences that is the heart and soul of Wandering Folk.
What began as a one woman show, Wandering Folk has grown with each year’s success and now employs a small team of enthusiastic wanderers who, together, have created a local company with a global conscience. Committed to being part of the solution not the problem, their motto is ‘Buy less, Choose Well, Make it Last’ - helping to preserve the natural environment by using sustainable fabrics like recycled cotton and hemp.
As a conscientious local company Wandering Folk also supported the recent floods by raising $100,000 to donate to the GIVIT Floodraiser campaign and are a proud 1% for the Planet partner, who regularly donate to rainforest rescue.
A natural collaborator, Sharnee shares her creations with her small team - which includes her partner Arthur in the role of Operations Manager - for their valuable
input, and once the designs are agreed upon, suppliers are engaged in the process and high quality and durable fabrics are sourced.
Wandering Folk are unique in design and stand the test of time. Like a magic carpet ride, the rugs take on a life of their own, evoking an opulent world of beauty, destined to become a cherished item for all those with gypsy souls.

THE INTUITIVE BEAUTY OF MUD
Mud Australia brings beautiful handcrafted porcelain homewares to the Northern Rivers, with its bright and expansive new store in the leafy creative hub of Habitat Byron Bay.
With its minimalist yet elegant handcrafted porcelain homewares, Mud Australia has built a cult following both here and abroad and is a firm favourite with food stylists and everyday design lovers the world over. “Inspired by the beauty of the region, and by so many people doing great things around design and environment, the team felt a really strong connection to the Northern Rivers,” says Mud Australia founder Shelley Simpson. “Habitat, with its sustainability ethos that aligns so closely with our own business values, made it the right place to open our 10th store,” she adds.
Noticing a gap in the market for timeless, durable homewares, Shelley founded Mud in 1994, creating her first pieces in her garage. The brand has come a long way since then, but each piece – now made with Limoges porcelain clay – is still handcrafted, using a highly nuanced and hands-on process, as well as hand-mixed quality pigments and glaze. “The beauty of our pieces can be attributed to the human touch which combines experience with intuition,” says Shelley. “There is an honesty to our creations, that you can’t replicate with machines.”
Mud Australia homewares make a stunning addition to any table, but unlike some handcrafted ceramics, they are also lightweight yet robust, and designed for
everyday use so you can pop them in the dishwasher too. Clear glaze is applied to the interior of each piece, leaving the exterior with a vitrified stone-like surface that becomes smooth with handling, while palettes vary from brilliantly bold to muted neutrals.
Handmade in Australia, all production happens in the purpose-built Sydney studio to maintain consistency and high quality. “We believe in conscious and responsible consumption, and this starts with good design,” explains Shelley. “Sustainability is in our DNA, our products eschew seasonality, complement any interior and are made to last, with new additions designed to complement existing designs,” she adds. Proudly carbon neutral, Mud also works closely with local producers, incorporates rescued clay, and uses solar panels, composting and strict water filtration at its headquarters.
Passionate about the growth of emerging and established artists, Mud was the major sponsor of the 2022 North Coast Mud Trail – an initiative that supports the community of professional ceramic artists who live and work in the region.
While the Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize (SSCP) awards a mentorship and cash prize of $10,000 to an emerging artist each year, so they can further pursue their ceramics career.
“Byron Bay is a special place for my family and I always open stores in places I love to visit,” Shelley says. “This is our first regional store, and we are grateful for the support from the local community.” So, if you are in the area, drop by the store to browse the extensive range of porcelain homewares and lighting alongside a curated selection of cutlery, glassware and linens from likeminded brands

SUMMER IN STYLE
WRITTEN BY: KATELYN REW
The relaxed lifestyle of the Northern Rivers often calls for transitional fashion pieces that can carry you from the beach to the café to your favourite dinner spot. Denim, linens, and statement tees complimented by salty beach hair and bare feet on long lazy summer days. Or perhaps you prefer a soft, flowy silhouette as you sip on cool beverages and watch the world go by? Whatever your aesthetic, there are so many talented local designers and accomplished brands in the area that we really are spoilt for choice. Here we’ve highlighted four labels which caught our eye for different reasons: historical significance, iconic status, eco-consciousness, and pure engineering perfection. We’re excited for you to discover - or perhaps rediscover - these inspiring local brands.

Golden Breed
Golden Breed
A name synonymous with surf culture, the Golden Breed label is one of the last remaining 100% Australian-owned surf companies. Proudly calling Byron Bay home, the brand’s journey began in California in the 1960s when beach culture was taking off. Virile young board riders, illuminated in a golden hue by the Californian late afternoon sun, were known as the ‘golden breed’. Everything about this label captures the good vibes and vintage nostalgia of bygone days. Think classic surf wear and relaxed, casual ‘fits best worn with no shoes as you stroll along sandy beaches or check the surf from the headland. A historical icon, not just in the waves, but also a global influencer in the Skate and Motocross scenes. This pioneering brand covers all the summer essentials, from clothing and accessories to board hire, purchase or repair - everything you need to get outdoors and amongst the waves. goldenbreed.com.au | @goldenbreedsurf
Thrills
Thrills was born on the open road, a child of motorcycle culture, underground music and vintage aesthetics. Originally hailing from the USA, founders Brooke, Tabitha, and Ryan – a trio who shared a mutual love of vintage motorcycles - relocated to the Northern Rivers in search of a simple life. Stepping foot on Aussie shores and finding that their beloved bikes weren’t readily available in this part of the world, prompted the friends to consider importing them from the USA and Japan, and thus began their business idea. To accompany this venture, a small t-shirt collection was also created and, proving successful, led to the birth of a clothing line. Fast forward a decade, and Thrills has practically become an unofficial uniform in the Northern Rivers, a tribute to this iconic brand’s impact on local fashion. They make a real effort to manufacture their garments sustainably and are a proud 1% for the Planet partner. So why not grab a few Thrills pieces, and who knows, maybe it’s time to get behind the wheel of your very own customised Harley. Hang ten easy riders.

Afends
Afends is less a brand and more a way of life that calls people to think outside the box and question everything. With the punk and hardcore movements at its core, founders Declan and Jonathan’s original creative endeavour was a screen-printing business that made band merch. Surf and skate culture was injected into the movement in the 2000s, and the designs evolved to showcase this inception. Opening their first concept store in Byron Bay back in 2009, Afends is now a major player not just in the Northern Rivers but also globally. Impassioned by social impact, their vision for a sustainable future is backed by eco-friendly practices. Receipts are emailed, paper bags are recyclable, and you won’t find any single-use plastic in any of their stores. They also ensure that the retailers they work with share these commendable values. It is a breath of fresh air to find a company living up to its own inspiring brand philosophy, ‘Sustainability through innovation, action, and positive change. Be defined by what you create. Not what you destroy.’

Epøkhe
Founded in 2012 by a filmmaker and two professional surfers, it’s no wonder Epøkhe is the epitome of cool. The trio loved the outdoors but could never find premium eyewear that felt comfortable and provided adequate sun protection, so they designed their own. Epøkhe has been revolutionising the eyewear industry for over a decade with each new campaign video reminiscent of arthouse cinema. Established with no investors and no one to answer to apart from themselves, the brand continues to act as a platform to support the team’s surf, design, art, and film endeavours. Unparalleled in style, all frames are handcrafted and ethically produced with the finest sustainable materials, ensuring each design is engineered to perfection. Through their world travels and influential network of friends and peers – all creatives and progressive surfers – Kai, Dion and Mitch have a constant source of inspiration for new designs that are sure to entice customers for many years to come.

THE VALLEY OF RAINBOWS
FROM ADVERSITY COMES CHANGE
With a love of the ocean and the natural environment, Matt Corby is a quintessential Aussie singer/songwriter. Inspired by a generation of indie rock, folk and acoustic music that’s deeply embedded with alternative, blue-eyed soul vibes, he’s an artist who has managed to metamorphose as the tide has changed.
Now living in a serene location in the Tweed Valley, Matt’s emerging with a new sound. After his family was affected by the floods early this year - their own property ravished by the unrelenting waters - he’s proven that through adversity comes creative change, penning and producing his latest single ‘Problems’ in the aftermath.
In a serendipitous moment Matt Corby’s latest song comes on the radio, “It’s not what we are used to from Corby but we’re going with it” announces triple J’s afternoon presenter.
So what makes Matt Corby tick and where is he now? Our publisher Karen caught up with the artist to find out.
Matt, thanks for talking to us. It’s been a while, what have you been up to?
I have been working hard behind the scenes writing and producing with a variety of different artists. And I’ve enjoyed it so much that I built a studio and started a small record label… I’ve also had a couple of kids and had time with the family.
You live here in the Byron Hinterlandhow long have you been here and what was it that drew you to the area? I’ve been up here almost 7 years. My partner is a nurse and from this area, and it was way easier for me to come up to her than for her to come to the south coast where I was living. The area is beautiful.
Living like a local in Byron Bay, can you let us in on some of your faves?
Favourite beach to visit?
Hastings Point
Place to grab a coffee?
It’s a tie between Black Drop (Pottsville) and Keith (Murwillumbah) Any secret locations to unwind? Yes (wouldn’t be a secret if I told you though)
Shoutout to your favourite restaurant?
Another tie - Bistro Livi in Murwillumbah or Ciao, Mate! In Bangalow. There are so many great places though.
Where to a grab drink? I’m a dad of two, so at home!
You and your family, like so many here in the Northern Rivers, were affected by the terrible floods earlier this year. How did these events impact your lives and the new music on your album?
We lost our house in the floods, the water got into our place by a couple feet. It’s been a slow process fixing it, but thousands of others are in the same situation. Coincidentally we were supposed to start working on some new music the day that the floods hit. I’m so thankful that the studio is separate to the house. While the new stuff doesn’t have much to do with the floods in subject matter, they were a key motivator for me to make this next record great.
I love the new single “Problems”, Can you tell me a little about the track and the story behind it?
It’s my cynical view on things. Me and my buddy Chris Collins, who’s an exceptional songwriter/producer/muso, were getting together once a month to go surfing and writing, and this song came together after a great surf at Hastings.
You have launched your own independent record label, ‘Rainbow Valley Records’. Can you tell us a little more about the label, the type of sounds you are creating and the talent you have signed on?
The label was intended originally to launch our friends more than anyone, who were incredibly talented but didn’t have the confidence to seek out help for their gifts. We love to be as diverse musically as we can, so at this point in time, we’ve signed four acts - ranging from country to hip-hip, to psych rock - which all stand alone in their genres. We’ve even signed a traditional Tibetan singer which is an exciting project to look out for next year.
What’s your weekend ritual; where would we find you and what would you be doing on a typical Saturday/Sunday when not touring?
Either surfing - I enjoy a good sesh out at Hastings Point if it’s not too busy - or having a bit of beach time with the fam, catching up with our friends in the area.
THE ARTS 52
BANGALOW FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS
WRITTEN BY ALISON BONE
Bringing world-class cinema to the picturesque Byron hinterland, Bangalow Film Festival promises 10 days of international premieres, cult classics, fascinating documentaries, and some old-time faves (Strictly Ballroom anyone?)
Bringing the local community together to celebrate film in a creative, inclusive, family-friendly event, the Bangalow Film Festival firmly challenges the notion that you need to be in a big city to watch quality cinema and new releases. “At the core of the festival is a love of cinema and the belief that watching a film with other people deeply changes the way we are able to experience the film itself,” says Festival Director, Christian Pazzaglia.
Taking place from 12-21 January, this year’s eclectic line up has something for everyone. From surf culture in Africa, to artist activism in the US, to visually spectacular environmental documentaries, as well as plenty of family-friendly events. Films will be screened indoors and outdoors with lots of fringe action going on too, including art exhibitions, live music, panels, and special guest appearances. Films will be screened at historic A & I Hall and pop-up venues around town, while Woods in the Arts Precinct will create an enticing food hub with lots of local food and drinks on offer.
In its third year, the Bangalow Film Festival was born out of the pandemic, the vision of three creative people who were missing out on all the things that weren’t happening. “Looking back, it was a pretty reckless decision to start a festival during Covid in 2021, with restrictions constantly looming, but we wanted to create something unique in Bangalow, and
for Bangalow. The response from the local community went well beyond our best expectations” says Christian.
Highlights for this season will include 2022 Venice Film Festival Winner, All The Beauty and the Bloodshed, a riveting film following artist Nan Goldin as she takes on the Sackler family, the pharmaceutical dynasty widely blamed for sparking the US opioid epidemic, and, making its Australian premiere, Wade In The Water: A journey into black surfing and aquatic culture - a compelling documentary delving into 1000 year old surfing traditions from Senegal to Angola.
For music lovers, Australian film, The Last Violin, is a heart-warming story following Harry Vatilioti – considered Australia’s greatest violin maker – as he makes his 800th (and final) violin. A world premiere, the screening will be followed by a concert with a renowned Australian violinist playing the violin from the film. Nature lovers will be spellbound by two stunningly photographed documentaries The Hidden Life of Trees and The Mushroom Speaks. While anyone who fancies a glass of vino will enjoy Living Wine an inspiring film about organic wine producers in California.
Of course, no film festival would be complete without some French drama. Rodeo is set in the motocross culture of suburban Paris featuring Julia, a fiercely independent misfit with a passion
for biking who takes on the boys’ club. Back on home soil, Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom, the quirky low budget Australian film that became a cult classic will be presented in an eye-popping new 4K restoration to celebrate its 30th anniversary. While Sweet As, makes its Australian premiere - a coming of age story following an Indigenous teenager as she discovers photography during a trip in Western Australia.
Art exhibitions include a collaboration between local First Nation artists Mel Ladkin and Nickolla Clark and an accompanying short film. And for the kids? Everyone’s favourite rabbit rock ‘n’ rollers, Bunny Racket have an exciting new audiovisual show that that promises to be truly surprising.
Keen to support the event? Become a friend of the Bangalow Film Festival by pledging a donation which will secure you a double season pass plus extra tickets to be used across the festival. For full event program check bangalowfilmfestival.com. See you there!

TIM BAKER ON FINDING PEACE AND PATTING SHARKS
WRITTEN BY KYLIE MITCHELL-SMITH
Let’s start with a little bit about yourself, your journey as an editor of surf mags to renowned author
I did an old-fashioned newspaper cadetship at the Melbourne Sun, while completing a BA in Journalism at RMIT, then ran away to work for Tracks surfing magazine in Sydney. Stayed there five years and then got poached by the opposition Surfing Life and moved north again to the Gold Coast. I lasted there five years before I quit my job to write a biography of 1978 world surfing champion Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew.
Describe how you see surfing, the lifestyle, the culture
Surfing has been through a remarkable transformation in my lifetime, from parents seeing it as a road to drug addiction and delinquency, to a recognition of its profound therapeutic powers. It absorbs us into something greater than self and can teach humility, balance, acceptance, resilience.
Where are some of the most epic spots you’ve surfed from Northern NSW to the Gold Coast?
The stretch of coast from Noosa, on the Sunshine Coast, to Angourie on the NSW north coast, must be one of the most wave-rich regions in the world. A series of a dozen or more pointbreaks all extend out from the energy centre of Wollumbin (or Mount Warning) like spokes in a wheel, shaped by a massive volcanic eruption 25 million years ago. I’ve had memorable surf sessions at most of those points over the years.
You’ve interviewed and written about some inspiring people over the years - what’s it like to write about yourself in comparison?
Much harder. I’ve always encouraged my interview subjects to be as candid as possible but it’s very different when you are the one being vulnerable. It’s terrifying.
The title of your most recent book ‘Patting The Shark’ has meaning, tell us about that
I was diagnosed with advanced, stage four, metastatic prostate cancer 12 days before my old mate Mick Fanning had his infamous run-in with a Great White Shark at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa. As I watched the footage, I felt like I was going through a slow-motion version of his experience and that I’d need to draw inspiration from him and his readiness to fight off his attacker. The original title of my book was ‘Punching The Shark’. Over time I realised this was a flawed approach and if survival was my only goal I would always be on tenterhooks, sweating on every blood test and scan result. I decided the goal wasn’t so much to punch the shark but rather to pat it, to make your peace with it. I had no sooner had this epiphany than I was scrolling Instagram and saw a post of Mick Fanning literally patting sharks, diving with a marine conservationist known as “the shark whisperer” so he could face his demons and make his peace with them. That felt like cosmic encouragement that I was on the right path.
Holistic health is close to your heart, what does that mean for you?
Treating the whole person and not just the tumour as most oncologists do. Holistic cancer care would involve empowering patients to take an active role in managing their own health, the tools to make informed decisions on treatment options, and supportive therapies like exercise, nutrition, stress reduction, emotional support, to help mitigate the toxic side effects of treatment, improve
quality of life and, in some instances, improve their prognosis. My personal self-care mantra is: Remember to take your M.E.D.S: meditation, exercise, diet, sleep.
Where do you find inspiration – what lights you up?
Obviously, the ocean and the coast - really skilled surfers, people who appear to have mastered a lifestyle based around their passions. I love music and seeing a great musician doing their thing is another profound joy, I think people who shed inhibitions and societal judgements and just do what makes their heart sing are the most inspiring.
We recently caught up with award winning local author, journalist, and storyteller Tim Baker, to talk all things surf culture and life off the back of his latest book ‘Patting the Shark’ - an intimate tale of his own journey of living well with prostate cancer.
Tim Baker.

THESE ARE THE GOOD OLD DAYS
WRITTEN BY TIM BAKER
The classic, quasi-spiritual surf film Morning of the Earth is screening around the country to packed houses. Shortboard pioneer and master shaper Bob McTavish’s boards are in high demand. Surfers are moving to the country, growing their own food and “getting back to where it all began, when life was simple, no rip-off people, and it was fun”.
Hang on! Is this 2022 or 1972? That quote comes from the soundtrack to Morning of the Earth and captures just how neatly surf culture is turning full circle. After an era of crowds, competition and commercialism, many surfers seem hungry to reexperience that cosmic dawning of a new coastal lifestyle, rejecting the grim nine-tofive work ethic of their parents to embrace a more idealistic world view based around connection to nature, nomadic #vanlife fantasies and the esoteric lessons of a life built around wave-riding.
And northern NSW is ground zero for this movement, as it was 50 years ago when city bound surfers first migrated to the region, fuelled on stories of perfect point breaks, cheap old farmhouses to rent and a pristine natural environment.
While the cheap old farmhouses are long gone, and crowds have intensified, most of the other elements of the “country soul” surfing dream are still here to be enjoyed. That pristine natural environment, incredible waves, warm water, sand bottom points and those rolling green hills that seem to go on for ever. The North Coast surfing lifestyle inspires an almost
religious fervour, attracting devotees of what 1966 world champion Nat Young once termed “The Church of the Open Sky”. This should hardly come as a great surprise to anyone. Surfing is almost by nature a spiritual pursuit, that somehow became subsumed by the materialistic mania of the past 50 years. As surfers age and pine for the innocence of their youth, and a new generation reared on the romantic nostalgia of surfing’s so-called “golden era”, as environmental and geo-political dramas play out daily, it’s little wonder that many of us hark back to simpler times. Surf culture is in the grip of a romantic time warp. Long hair and beards, retro boards, vintage fashions, kombi vans and veggie gardens abound. While the entire world has changed around us, surfers at least can paddle out into the ocean and connect to a cultural continuum that can trace it roots back through millennia to ancient, traditional, Polynesian culture. Some of this is faddism and has been ruthlessly commodified and monetised like every other passing cultural quirk. But at its heart, there is some substance to this wave of surf nostalgia. Surfing is a beautiful thing to do. While flying along a moving wall of water on a sliver of foam and fibreglass, it is literally impossible to ruminate on the multitudinous stressors of the modern world – the bill we haven’t paid, the sting of a recent marital spat, career or parenting conundrums, climate change and Putin’s aggressions. We are immersed into something greater than
the self. Past and future drop away. It’s all about the present moment. Whales breach, pods of dolphin ride waves and launch skywards, sea birds glide on the updraft of ocean swells. In such moments, it is easy to conclude that all is right in the world.
As if to highlight this surf cultural phenomenon, a new book titled Neverland by long-time north coast local and social historian Tricia Schultz documents the profound impact surfers have had on the region since their original influx in the ‘60s and ‘70s. The neatly dressed young surfer on the cover with his bushranger beard, sitting on the boot of his well-preserved vintage car looks entirely contemporary, like he might have made your soy latte at a hipster café this morning. In fact, he’s one of the wave of American surfers drawn to this land of milk and honey, Roy Meisel, who arrived from California with his wife Diana and $2000 to start a new life in 1971. Throughout its pages, the dishevelled and nomadic young surfers featured would be considered the height of cool today.
While real estate prices might have skyrocketed, and Hollywood stars and Instagram influencers now rub shoulders with counter-culture surfers and fire-twirlers, this ancient land, sacred Bundjalung country, continues to speak to us and bestow its idyllic lifestyle.
As 1978 world surfing champion Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew once said to, “If you’re here and you’re surfing, these are the good old days”.
Everything old is new again as surf culture is gripped by a romantic time warp
THE ARTS 55 SUMMER 2022/23
Image: Surfing in Melanesia Photo by Ted Grambeau
We talk to Nicole Abbott from Coastal Abode Properties, our go-to local real estate expert and property styling maven, about her exciting boutique service and the stabilising of current market trends.
THE TIME IS RIPE
TO LIST YOUR REGIONAL PROPERTY
There’s no denying the heat has come off the property market across the country. This inevitable downshift has resulted in slower sales, falling house prices and wary buyers holding off as they take stock of interest rate hikes and economic uncertainty.
While the Northern Rivers is not immune to market changes, our region continues to fare better than big cities like Melbourne and Sydney, where house prices declined more rapidly this year.
The property market is challenging to predict right now. Corelogic reports the fall of pricing has begun to ease in some areas, though it’s too early to claim an upturn.
In the absence of a crystal ball, one thing is certain—the COVID led property boom may have ended, but demand for homes along our stretch of the Aussie coastline remains strong.
Yes, for-sale signs are soaking up more sun than usual, but properties that have sat idle on the market are starting to move as buyers and sellers shift their expectations.
And while some buyers wait cautiously in the wings, savvy property hunters understand that the Tweed Coast is backed by a history of steady capital growth, making it a solid choice for buying and investing.
If you’re considering selling, now is the time to start the conversation. It pays to get out in front before more stock becomes available, buyers are spoilt for choice, and the pace of the market picks up again.
The first step is to schedule a conversation and appraisal to your pre-Christmas to-do list to get the ball rolling. Choose an
agent who can paint a realistic picture of the potential sale price from a local perspective, and help you prepare for the Summer listing season.
The next step is to maximise the appeal of your home and showcase it in the best light by repairing, replacing and repainting where necessary.
Styling is the final, often underrated step before listing. Engaging a professional property styling service, like Coastal Abode’s Style & Stage, can help buyers tick off wants and needs from their home bucket list.
The Tweed Coast is a tropical haven serving up an enviable lifestyle, and your property listing should communicate that. As eagle-eyed property stylists, we can work with you to create big ticket areas, like a second living space, dreamy outdoor alfresco, study nook, playroom, or parent’s retreat.
Giving buyers a sense of how their life might look and feel in your home is worth every penny at sale time. This marketing approach is extremely effective in driving healthier outcomes and has helped us to set sales records in Koala Beach and Seabreeze Estate, Pottsville.
As local, in-the-know agents, we can accurately appraise your property and support you through each stage of the selling process.

COASTAL VISIONS PHOTOGRAPHY
Photographer Paget Thomson has spent years travelling and photographing the world, merging his passion for surfing with his passion for ocean art photography. With the majority of his images being taken on the majestic Tweed Coast, Thomson’s deep love for the ocean and the art of photography is clearly evident in his body of work. From this great love emerged the Coastal Visions Photography Gallery in Cabarita Beach. Opened in 2011, mere footsteps from white sands and clear blue waters, Thomson sells his artworks to both local and international clients. After ten years of running the Gallery and café, he sold the café side of the business to cultivate a beautiful work/life balance with his family. Having spent thousands of hours on the local beaches in pursuit of the perfect image, Paget Thomson has captured our magnificent area in the most masterful ways. Customers have the opportunity to view and purchase his stunning photography online or from the beautiful gallery space. Each artwork comes in various mediums, including framed prints, canvas and acrylic prints.
