MAKING THE ISSUE In honor of Modernism Week, and the love Greater Palm Springs has for midcentury modern architecture, we shot the Cover Story at Desert Eichler #1, a home modeled from Joseph Eichler’s stunning development plans. Our writer Chelsea shared, “Going into the article, I had very little knowledge about midcentury modern homes. Writing about Modernism Week gave me the opportunity to explore the different segments within midcentury modern culture and developers such as Joseph Eichler.” LOCALE is thrilled to be showcasing Modernism Week in our Cover Story. The rich history, stunning architecture and character found in each midcentury home is what makes Greater Palm Springs even more of a unique and highly sought after destination. Our photographer Natasha used subtle lighting, enhancing the bright desert skies. For shots of the exterior, she used a “silver bounce as fill with the sun back and/or side, lighting Sofia.” This was a beautiful complement to the scenery and our amazing model, Sofia. “To complement the gorgeous light pouring in from the glass doors and windows,” Natasha opted for a subtle strobe light (Hensel Porty with softbox) for the indoor shots. Natasha used a Canon 5D Mark III with a 24-70 2.8 lens. Stylist, Neil Cohen noted that “the really clean lines of the house were a perfect backdrop for Trina’s prints.” With Trina Turk being known for “color and vintage looking prints,” photographing our model in a Desert Eichler with the bright and beautiful designs of Trina, this shoot was a home run across the board. Sleek and straight hair, paired with a subtle berry lip by Brian Keller was a flawless move and aesthetically complementary to the home.

A NOTE FROM OUR

PUBLISHER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER "Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." —John F. Kennedy I do not believe that change is inherently good or evil, but I do believe it’s necessary. I seem to prefer change big and all at once. A month after you read this I will have completed my seventh year at Locale Magazine, the longest tenure of my career. I must live in dog years because seven to me often feels like 50. Seven years ago, the magazine I delivered out of the back of my Jetta was the freshest most artistic magazine Ashley and my minds could imagine. Seventy percent of a decade later, blessed with the artistic stylings of our Art Director, Reilly; talented contributors; and a rarely satiated team of editors, we have created a new version of Locale Magazine for 2017 and we hope it takes you quite a while to get used to. Look for these New Looks: 1. Larger cleaner logo that takes up the entire width of the magazine. 2. A not-so-subtle change in fonts throughout. 3. The addition of article descriptions on the front cover. 4. A bigger spotlight on our Native Knowledge local stars. Some things change, yet others remain the same. The parts we kept are those that have always made us stand out, in our opinion: The belief that content is king and our readers should never be able to (or want to) finish an entire issue in one sitting. If the number of stories is any indication, this issue

boasts 25, the most amount of content we have ever fit into this many pages. Our EAT///DRINK issue cover feature is contrarian to President Kennedy's quote from the outset of this article. Our cover is a throwback to avocado colored appliances and geometrically tailored roof lines. We shot this modern day replica of a midcentury modern story line at a new home built from midcentury Eichler plans. Our friends at William Grant & Sons set us up on the dream culinary blind date with Anthony Bourdain to talk about his new show “Raw Craft” (p.30), we talked “favorite drinks “ with several local experts in "Clink, Drink and be Merry" and take the latest and greatest looks from Beyonce’s fitness line Ivy Park for a run in “We Run The World” (p.76). Before we are done, we show you everything we love about the burgeoning foodie scene in our oversized guide "What New Years Resolution?", take you inside the minds of nine local culinary leaders in “Chef’s Table” (p.35) and inside the glass walls of a midcentury modern stunner that recently hit the market "Midcentury Playground." I agree with President Kennedy's quote that started this story and I would like to steal a portion of it in closing. I too believe firmly that "change is the law of life." Wishing you change in 2017.

RAW TALENT

Anthony Bourdain Discusses His Latest Show “Raw Craft” WRITTEN BY: XAN ESTIN At William Grant & Sons’ The Balvenie’s “Raw Craft” series in September, we had the opportunity to interview a culinary creative alongside a brand that fits his own well. The Balvenie comes to be through curated craftsmanship, from a distillery that grows its own barley and utilizes its traditional floor maltings. Anthony Bourdain is a man who puts in all the work, curates each experience he displays and has created a brand that many know and respect. Anthony Bourdain, chef, author and documentarian, opened up about his personal influences, the lessons he has learned along his journeys, as well as exclusive details of master craftspeople by bringing us The Balvenie’s “Raw Craft.” Q: You refer to your featured artists as “marinating in training.” How long does it take for them to become masters of their craft? Anthony Bourdain: Boy, that depends on what they’re doing and I think you’d get wildly divergent answers from the various craftspeople. There’s a Japanese term ‘Shoshin’ which means ‘beginner's mind.’ I know a lot of artists’ do say they have not reached that point and will never tell you they feel they have mastered it. For a lot of people I believe it’s an ongoing process. In the Japanese way of looking at things you try to show up everyday assuming you know nothing. Q: According to you, how does one become the master innovator of a craft? AB: I do Jiu Jitsu, and if you do a thing 10,000 times maybe you’ll get good at it. Repetition, repetition, repetition. Q: What is the distinction between science and magic of a finely tuned craft? AB: I will never know the answer to that question, but I don’t know that I want to. The best moments on the show are when you lose sight of that difference. You think, ‘Wow!

30

LOCALE MAGAZINE

I’m not sure what this is or how it happened.’ There was a moment in the knife making process where you see this wave of heat suddenly work its way through the knife and you think, ‘Whoa! Dude.’ The craftsman is explaining scientifically what’s happening but it doesn’t make any difference. It still looks like magic to me. Q: You referred to crafts as ‘the gateway to the soul.’ Does that mean you can always recognize a master based on their innovation? AB: I think so. The best craftspeople always use their personal vision, voice, preferences, and passions. It is impossible for them to not put that imprint into their product. You see it certainly in Elizabeth Brims’s [blacksmith] work. All of them feel this is the way it should be and there’s a distinctive feature that sets them apart from others who are working in the same area. Q: All of these valuable tools are exemplary in their innovative area of focus. What is the key to pursuing artistry with such determination? AB: A little twinge of insanity, perhaps. Don’t discount it. Whatever it takes. It is an insane urge to write a book. It's a foolish enterprise. Normal people wouldn’t do such a thing. What would drive you to work a year or years on something that probably will not pay off? Why would you think anyone would be interested in listening to your story? It takes an abnormal personality to persevere up against that kind of logic. I think these are not ordinary people that set themselves apart. A little touch of insanity. Q: What’s next for “Raw Craft”? AB: We are looking at a whole new group of craftspeople. All of them are very exciting, and we shall see.

TONY THE TV PERSONALITY You can also catch Anthony Bourdain on shows like “No Reservations” and “Parts Unknown.”

COOK LIKE TONY Bourdain is an author of numerous culinary escapades, but his latest “Appetites: A Cookbook” is his first cookbook in over 10 years. Flip the pages to discover his finding from traveling (and tasting) the world. You’ll be sure work up an appetite.

Greater Palm Springs is not just a popular destination for poolgoers, resort loungers and golf lovers, but home to some of California’s best restaurants. Locals and visitors alike indulge in the flavors of Greater Palm Springs—from unbelievably fresh sushi, to succulent barbecue and decadent dishes with global inspiration. We have gathered eight of the most talented and creative chefs and restaurateurs from Greater Palm Springs to find out what inspires and drives their careers, as well as what dish they can’t live without in their own backyard.

Q: If you could eat one thing in Greater Palm Springs for the rest of your life (not from your restaurant), what would it be?

WP KITCHEN + BAR 73130 El Paseo Palm Desert, CA 92260 760.568.2700 www.wolfgangpuck.com

Erik Dandee EXECUTIVE CHEF, WP KITCHEN + BAR Q: How do you personally or your restaurant stand apart from the rest in such a large industry? Erik Dandee: That is how the restaurant and menu were designed, with food and drinks you wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else around us. We try very hard every day to create a unique experience that you will only find here. Engrained in everything that we do is the level of service and hospitality we strive to bring our dining clientele. Combine that with locally sourced ingredients from Crows Pass Farm out of Temecula, CA for example, and harvesting the freshest vegetables, fruits and cheeses from the Certified Farmers Market each Wednesday and Saturday. That is essentially the framework chef Wolfgang Puck has really built his foundation on.

Q: If you could only use three ingredients for the rest of your life, what would they be? ED: Black garlic, Calabrian chili, and tomatoes. Q: What does it take to run a successful restaurant? ED: Complete guest satisfaction, from the moment they walk in the door. I think it’s very important as a chef, manager, server, bartender, hostess, really any team member that contributes to the entire operations, to not only have an understanding of our guests, but to cater to their tastes for a memorable experience with us, every time.

ED: That would have to be corned beef and latkes from Sherman’s Deli & Bakery. One of the best things I have had here. 36 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Chuck Courtney, EXECUTIVE CHEF, EIGHT4NINE RESTAURANT & LOUNGE Q: If you could eat one thing in Greater Palm Springs for the rest of your life (not from your restaurant), what would it be? Chuck Courtney: Sherman's Deli Matzo Ball Soup. Q: How do you personally, or your restaurant, stand apart from the rest in such a large industry? CC: As a team, it is our attention to detail, going the extra step—food from scratch, excellent caring service, paying attention to presentation, both in the front of the house and with the plate of food. This sends subtle messages to our guests that add up to a great experience. Q: If you could only use three ingredients for the rest of your life, what would they be? CC: Good bread, good butter, and sea salt (don't tell my doctor!).

Frank Decker HEAD CHEF, PEAKS RESTAURANT Q: If you could eat one thing in Greater Palm Springs for the rest of your life (not from your restaurant), what would it be? Frank Decker: Sushi. I could eat sushi every day. I love the different textures and flavor combinations. Never gets old. Q: How do you personally, or your restaurant, stand apart from the rest in such a large industry? FD: All of us have a love for what we do here. We try to use the best ingredients to

make the best products we can. If something isn’t up to our standards we won’t use it. And you can’t beat the view.

Drew Davis CHEF AND OWNER, CATALAN MEDITERRANEAN RESTAURANT Q: If you could eat one thing in Greater Palm Springs for the rest of your life (not from your restaurant), what would it be? Drew Davis: The Bacon Flight at Cheeky's. Q: How do you personally, or your restaurant, stand apart from the rest in such a large industry? DD: With our unique menu. I like to change the menu four times a year in order to work with the best ingredients the season has to offer. Giving our guests a nice element of change helps them move out of their comfort zone and try something new. As a family owned and operated business we like to treat our guests and staff like family. Q: If you could only use three ingredients for the rest of your life, what would they be? DD: Salt, pepper and pork. Q: What does it take to run a restaurant successfully? DD: Passion, simplicity and changing with the trends.

Q: If you could only use three ingredients for the rest of your life, what would they be? FD: Pork shoulder, rice and garlic. Three ingredients with almost endless possibilities. Q: What does it take to run a restaurant successfully? FD: Passion, dedication and the ability to think on your feet.

Arthur L. Vasquez: The Venue Roll at The Venue Sushi Bar & Sake Lounge in Palm Desert. Q: How do you personally, or your restaurant, stand apart from the rest in such a large industry? AV: Personally I have a strong local small business ethic. 99.9 percent of the restaurants I frequent are local. In most cases they are owned by very close friends or business partners. Engin Onural OWNER AND SUSHI CHEF, THE VENUE SUSHI BAR & SAKE LOUNGE Q: How do you personally, or your restaurant, stand apart from the rest in such a large industry? Engin Onural: Me and my restaurant go hand to hand. What makes me and my restaurant stand apart is the way I think and see the world. I travel a lot, get inspired and implement that inspiration to my dishes. We are definitely not a traditional sushi bar nor have a traditional mindset. Q: If you could only use three ingredients for the rest of your life, what would they be? EO: Micro greens, Sockeye salmon and cucumber. Q: What does it take to run a restaurant successfully? EO: I wish I could give you a recipe. It does not exist. What I mean by that is each day you may face with a brand new challenge and you will need to fix it. But what I can tell you is you must have the following built in to you: 38 LOCALE MAGAZINE

1. Passion, you must have a passion for food and the industry. 2. Accept the relationship. You will have mad non-regular work hours, no regular holidays or days off. You will be working when your friends are out and about. They will swing by the restaurant to say hi. 3. Be a good mentor, there will be good and not so good people working for you. This does not change, you must be a constantly good leader to them and always show them which road to take, how to improve themselves. 4. Obviously, you have a dream to achieve by opening your restaurant and whatever that dream is, your team needs to understand and support it. They will be a big part of it. 5. Whatever your position is at the restaurant be the best of it. Be the best dishwasher, be the best host, be the best server, be the best chef...

Q: If you could only use three ingredients for the rest of your life, what would they be? AV: Great olive oil, fresh seafood (any), and fresh herbs. Q: What does it take to run a restaurant successfully? AV: I’m still learning (laughs). A willingness to operate on your own terms. Lead with your heart. Never refuse to look at the world for R&D (Research & Development) and lastly, never put a plate of food in front of a guest that you would not serve to your mother!

Q: How do you personally, or your restaurant, stand apart from the rest in such a large industry? PH: Our goal is to focus on technique, use indigenous products sourced locally or grown on property, and to create and experience with Food and Beverage. Q: If you could only use three ingredients for the rest of your life, what would they be? PH: Egg, ginger and citrus.

Brett Maddock EXECUTIVE CHEF AND OWNER, THE GRILL ON MAIN Q: How do you personally, or your restaurant, stand apart from the rest in such a large industry? Brett Maddock: (As) Chef and Owner, I spend quite a bit of time out front taking orders and creating special dishes for guests. I always have daily specials, so when I get to know my guestsʼ palate, I can create something for them personally. These are the building blocks I use to create the features. I will be talking to one of my local guests and they will say ”When are you getting Scallops?“ My response will be “When are you coming back? I will have scallops that day.” Q: If you could only use three ingredients for the rest of your life, what would they be? BM: Very tough question. I will say garlic, olive oil and lemons. they are used a lot in cooking, especially on fresh ingredients. One of the best salads I have on the menu, The Israeli, is simple. Cucumber, tomato, olives, red peppers, cilantro, feta, lemon, salt, olive oil, black pepper. Its chopped and tossed, simple and fresh.

Q: What does it take to run a restaurant successfully? PH: In my opinion, to run a successful restaurant takes many talents. You have to have passion, tenacity, analytical, talent, and a tireless desire to enjoy serving others. It’s not just location, location, location anymore. People travel to spots where they are recognized, treated well, and given hospitality, and able to enjoy a great product which consists great food and service. Smiles are free!

Q: What does it take to run a restaurant successfully? BM: For me to be successful in the business I need my wife Elena and family to understand and support the hours and dedication needed. Elena is here with me daily and I am grateful for that. Need to understand a P&L and budget, this is where a lot of restaurants fail. I have an amazing bookkeeper I have known for 10 plus years. Multitask! Your brain can never stop. The local community here has supported The Grill in season and out of season. Because of them we are open all year! THE PERFECT TRIO Q&A WITH MARK VAN LAANEN: EXECUTIVE CHEF AND CO-OWNER, TRIO RESTAURANT

Photos - L’Atelier Cafe: Bhadri Kubendran

Q: Chef Mark, you’re bringing the comfort of the Midwest and the style of California to Palm Springs. Tell us a little about what inspired you to bring this concept to the area. Mark Van Laanen: When we were originally looking at Palm Springs, we saw the need for a place with great energy, a spot for the locals, and comfort food. Tony [General Manager/Owner TRIO] and I are both from the Midwest so we created that home, that hub where Palm Springs eats - we took the best parts of the Midwest and brought it to Palm Springs.

Steak and Mac ‘n Cheese. I also love my wines. We have some great new wines on our list, check out the Foxtrot Pinot Noir from Okanagan BC, and Elouan from Oregon. Q: What are comments from customers that you live for? Any moments that stood out? MVL: Once an older woman came up to our host stand, asked if I was the owner, and told me, “I LOVE COMING TO TRIO—it makes me feel young!” That made [Tony and I] feel great.

Q: What does a day as TRIO’s head chef look like? MVL: Tasting! There’s so much tasting. We ensure throughout every step of the way our foods have been prepared correctly. There’s a lot of ordering food, making desserts, managing my kitchen staff and getting to know our guests.

Q: Can you describe the process of compiling a menu / theme? How long does it typically take? MVL: It isn’t a long process if you start off with a good base. Once you start off with a good base, you could build from there. Both Tony and I are from the Midwest and I had a restaurant in Door County, Wisconsin that was more American-style. For TRIO, I took what worked in the Midwest and gave them a Palm Springs twist.

Q: Tell us about your personal favorite dishes and drinks on the menu! MVL: Our Number 1 seller is our Pot Roast. It’s delicious, I love it. I also enjoy our Harris Ranch Skirt

Q: What is your favorite breakfast or brunch item at TRIO? MVL: My favorite brunch item is our Corn Cake with poached eggs... They are delish!

The entire Sunday brunch buffet featuring everything from a fresh seafood display (including crab legs, oysters, and large shrimp), a dessert bar with countless sweet options separate from the array of fresh baked goods, an omelet station to whip up your favorites, a local honey bar, dried fruits and nuts, fresh fruit, charcuterie, sushi, a roast station, and for an additional cost, a Bloody Mary bar.

Q: What makes these three unique? TH: All of these represent a taste of Palm Springs, from the fresh dates found on the pizza, the use of farmers market fruits and vegetables found in the pickled beet dish to the bountiful selection found on our breakfast buffet with fresh local seafood, fruit, and more. Q: Your Lamb Burger is a popular dish. What makes it special? A Decadent Dream Come True Ò Le Paon Restaurant is an elegant and upscale dining experience for couples, special occasions or for anyone seeking a memorable night out. Although the dessert menu here is extraordinary and I highly suggest ordering one (or three!) of everything, it's their famous Raspberry Souffle that has my mouth watering just thinking about it. "Tastes like Paris." "To Die For." Those are the things I think I actually heard myself saying out loud as I was licking the crumbs off the bottom of the souffle dish. Made with the freshest of fresh ingredients, this fluffy, ultra decadent, dream come true is made mostly from raspberries and sugar. It puffs over the rim ever so perfectly and is golden brown on top yet pink all over. Topped with a dusting of powdered sugar and the famous R logo atop, it's very reasonably priced at just $12. ...IN CASE YOU’RE STICKING WITH YOUR RESOLUTIONS

WRITTEN BY: TYLER HAYCOX | PHOTOGRAPHED BY: BHADRI KUBENDRAN & JULIE JONES

Q: Can you explain what makes this dish so healthy? Paco Solano: The healthy dish that I will be preparing is the Chilean Sea Bass topped with a great fruit salsa and served with red potatoes and steamed vegetables. This dish is very healthy because Sea Bass is very low in calories and is an excellent source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Q: What is your go-to meal at your restaurant? PS: My go to meal would definitely be any of our chef specials. The chef specials change nightly and always feature the freshest fish available to us as well as meat. The specials as well as our menu incorporate seasonal flavors that really come together beautifully. One of my favorite dishes that I like to prepare is the Halibut. I often prepare a tortillacrusted halibut with avocado relish. I enjoy this preparation because it has a Mexican flair to it and embodies the fresh flavors of the west coast.

4 GRILLED SHRIMP & VEGGIE CAPRESE Ò Bonta Restaurant offers a plate full of protein, Vitamin B12 and selenium all at your fingertips. Their Grilled Shrimp & Veggie Caprese is not only filled with great nutrients, but served with some yummy veggies and a fig balsamic drizzle. Yum!

Q: You have worked your way from busser to restaurant owner and executive chef. What inspires you to work hard and succeed? PS: From the very start, when I first began cooking, I knew that I wanted to own my own restaurant. I set that goal for myself, and since then I worked 25 years to achieve my goal. Now that I own my own restaurant, I plan to continue setting goals for myself and grow as a person and a businessman. I also have five children who I want to be able to inspire. I want my kids to know that no matter where you start in life if you work hard enough you can achieve your goals, and that the only person who can stop you is yourself. My children are getting older now—they are in college and pursuing their careers. And when things get difficult for them I always tell them, "If it was easy, everyone would do it." MONKEY BUSINESS WILLIAM GRANT & SONS’ MONKEY SHOULDER MAKES AN IMPRESSION WRITTEN BY: JORDAN LIGONS PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NATHAN WHELAN

William Grant & Sons’ Monkey Shoulder is a blended malt Scotch whisky that mixes well with almost everything. A Monkey Mojito, Old Fashioned, Monkey Coke—pick your poison. Legendary Malt Master David Stewart decided one day to make history by creating the world’s first triple malt, a combo of Speyside’s Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie single malts. Thus Monkey Shoulder was born—the smooth operator we know and love. You don’t have to be an expert mix master to concoct one of these monkeys up, this bottle’s versatility is at your fingertips. Cheers!

TRIBUTE TO MALTMEN • The name “monkey shoulder” roots from a condition that old school maltmen picked up from working long shifts of manual labor. Their arms would hang down a bit like a monkey’s, hence the term.

f there were ever an argument for mindful eating, the Short Ribs Benedict at Wilma & Frieda is the perfect argument. You can taste the buttery goodness of the English muffin, made in-house the night before. Enjoy the crispy outside and the airy, almost cake like, inside with just a hint of the smell the popcorn, created from the cornmeal it is dusted with. Take a spoonful of the warm Hollandaise Sauce that is light and lemony with just a little kick at the finish. Savor the short rib meat which is braised for 12 hours in beef broth, red wine and mirepoix, and as owner Kelly McFall describes it, “The holy trinity of onions, carrots, and celery.” This is all blended together and added to the meat, creating a rich, flavorful delicacy. Five ounces of this delicious meat are on every Benedict served. Now sample the fresh, sautéed arugula and the peppery tang of the vegetable. Finally, slide your fork into the constructed Benedict and watch as the rich and golden fresh poached egg mingles with the decadence of the Hollandaise Sauce. Delight in this meal with your senses of sight, smell, and taste.

Spears takes things that are familiar and puts his own twist on them. The feedback allows for him to gauge the popularity and make adjustments.

Q: How did you and Kelly team up? Chad Spears: I answered an advertisement on Craig’s List. Kelly McFall: And I got lucky. CS: I was impressed at the orientation by the best cup of coffee I ever had. KF: I didn’t think he was going to show. He was not enthusiastic and would not make eye contact, but his knowledge impressed me. Q: Why did you decide to make English muffins in house? CS: Kelly forced me. We had to arm wrestle. (he grins) KM: Before we opened, vendors told us it would not be possible to make our own English muffins, among other items, on our menu. They gave us packaged items. I went home and made the muffins to see if it could be done and Chad made them better. We make over a thousand muffins each week. We also make 90 pounds of jam per week. Q: Your food has been described as, “craveable.” What does that mean to you? CS: Our regulars, people who come back again and again and order the same thing. It feels good to see

our regulars and see them often. Craveable food is food you want to come back for. Q: In your entrance you feature a picture of your Short Ribs Benedict pared with your signature Bloody Caesar. How do they compliment each other? CS: The acidity of the drink balances the richness of the Short Ribs Benedict. KM: Chad knows the taste of ingredients and how they will interact with each other. Q: Is there anything else you want us to know? KM: We have a good time doing what we are doing. We spend a lot of time at work and if we are not enjoying it, we shouldn’t be doing it. Q: Are there restaurants you particularly enjoy? CS: Venue is the only sushi place I will eat. KM: I also like Eight4Nine. Both Venue and Eight4Nine pay attention to quality ingredients and freshness. Finally, Kelly says, “We eat like fat kids on a Tuesday. We are very spoiled here.”

Up and Coming:

Ò Kelly and Chad are continually inventing new dishes. Recently Kelly suggested churro waffles with cinnamon sugar and Madagascar vanilla creme anglaise. Chad has created another benedict using spaghetti squash instead of a traditional english muffin. Both say the creations are endless.

Quality Control:

Ò The Duroc ham used by Wilma and Frieda’s is leaner and more flavorful. “We never want to serve ’just food.’ It needs to be the freshest, highest quality, with the best care in preparation.

Native Knowledge:

Ò Before joining the team at Wilma and Frieda, Chad worked at Tommy Bahamas, and Roy's Hawaiian Fusion.

Chef Chad Spears characterizes himself as, “A man on a mission.” He continuously experiments with what might be considered dinner friendly foods to make them more breakfast friendly. He is not limited by traditional interpretations of classics. A recent eggs Benedict special was constructed of goat cheese polenta in place of the English muffin. Swiss chard, fennel, and leeks substituted for the spinach of traditional eggs Benedict and the dish was finished with a black pepper and kale Hollandaise Sauce.

I want people to feel as though they’ve been invited to a party in my home.” —Chris Malm

Summer of 2017 will mark more than the end of another season, but the 10-year anniversary of one of Palm Springs’ most beloved restaurants. Jake’s Palm Springs is celebrating this accomplishment thanks to the ceaseless attentions of Co-Owners Chris Malm and Bruce Bloch, alongside gifted Head Chef Mario Curci. The devoted group firmly established Jake’s as a community gathering place for relaxed and refreshing outings, a place that guests can come to unwind and have fun while they sample the exquisite California cuisine. Jake’s has welcomed guests for nearly a decade, and we congratulate them on an impressive achievement. Another 10 years is sure to be in their future! 58 LOCALE MAGAZINE

BLOODY MA RY HEAVEN : u For one of the desert’s most unique Bloody Marys, you’ll need to try one of Jake’s—complete with bacon and horseradish steeped in vodka. Yum!

“Tucked away like a gem in the crown of Palm Springs, Jake’s outward appearance fills visitors with a sense of lightness and enchantment.”

hris Malm and Bruce Bloch began Jake’s in 2007 after falling in love with Palm Springs. On a weekend vacation from New York City, they jumped at purchasing a condo and began setting the groundwork for their new endeavor, a restaurant plan that would become Jake’s. They both were, and continue to be, passionate about food and dining. Chris, especially, had the restaurant industry “in his blood.” He worked in restaurants throughout high school, which put him through Cornell University to earn his degree in Hotel Administration. In New York, Chris built a career with the JeanGeorges Vongerichten’s restaurant group, a chef whom New York declared the single most influential person on the way New York dines. Co-Owner Bruce Bloch had a successful career in New York advertising, which came in handy when the duo decided to embark on a new journey in sunny California. With Bruce’s advertising and branding expertise, Jake’s image was overwhelmingly positive for an emerging, and continuing, culinary icon. Now, nearly 10 years into their enterprise, the partners have built Jake’s into something of a Palm Springs empire. In the past few years alone, Jake’s has been recognized by OpenTable as a “Contemporary American Neighborhood Gem,” one of the top “100 Best Al Fresco Dining Restaurants in America,” and a “Top 20 Palm Springs Restaurants” by FlipKey. Chris and Bruce seem to have seamlessly hurdled over the obstacle most restaurants fail to overcome, and with flying colors.

Their success is also due to the silent third partner, Jake. Though you might have seen the restaurant’s namesake around the courtyard, Jake was perhaps most likely focusing on his chew toys in the upstairs office, as a happy West Highland terrier. Unfortunately, the team lost Jake last February. However, the team is happy to have a new four-legged friend around, Jackson—who is a direct descendant of Jake. Chef Mario is yet another reason for Chris and Bruce’s success. Nearing eight years of partnership, Chris says Chef Mario is a vital component to Jake’s. Since he joined in 2009, the menu has been propelled towards greatness, which guests can sense in every bite. The group is “all about the food.” Putting excellent food on the

table is their abiding passion, continuously earning them much deserved accolades. In fact, even though the restaurant closes for the summer season, they retain 90 percent of their friendly and passionate staff. Nothing reaches the menu before first being tried, tested, and teased to its prime state. There’s nothing this group of inspired individuals love more than welcoming guests into their home and earning their gratification. Making sure everyone walks away happy and satisfied with their experience is a continuous goal of Jake’s, and is recognizable in every aspect of their business. Tucked away like a gem in the crown of Palm Springs, Jake’s outward appearance fills visitors with a sense of lightness and enchantment. Seeming very California chic, you’ll notice the sunny outdoor patio under shady crisp white umbrellas. Should you so choose, your group may dine in the impeccably designed interior dining room which overlooks the Uptown Design District, or out in the open patio. This popular dining spot is always warm, even on those sweetly chilling desert nights, making it a perfect destination for an intimate gathering with friends and family. “I want people to feel as though they’ve been invited to a party in my home,” Chris says, while Bruce says laughter is “one of the best sounds” he loves to hear in the restaurant. An American bistro of this caliber surely slips up somewhere, right? Well, we certainly haven’t found any weak points. Chef Mario’s menu brings out the sophistication in this Palm Springs destination, with seafood starters like the Lobster Tempura or Firecracker Calamari. Delight in the Cioppino or traditional American recipes elevated to new heights such as the Chilean Sea Bass and Filet Mignon. If you want to try everything, take part in the three-course dinner special with a starter, main course, and a dessert of your choice (we recommend the Banana Toffee Crunch Cake!). Open Tuesday through Saturday, visit Jake’s for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. They even offer take-out for fans who are on the go. If you have a pet, bring them along and enjoy your meal on the patio. Reservations for brunch and dinner are highly recommended as the restaurant is a crowd pleaser, and there are only so many tables to share.

The third would have to be sweet vermouth because it's a timeless classic and there are so many variations; much like red wine, but it represents almost everything prohibition. Q: What is your favorite drink to make at your restaurant? GW: My favorite drink to make is something we've recently created named "Ginger's Island,” where ginger is the star of the show. This vodka drink features our housemade ginger-cayenne simple syrup which adds punch,

spice and sizzle to the drink—and our cocktail list! Q: What makes you, or your establishment stand apart from the rest? GW: Two things that set Pacifica Seafood Restaurant apart from the others are our spectacular rooftop dining terrace and our impressive international vodka bar. The rooftop terrace boasts magnificent views of the Coachella Valley, which is the perfect back drop while indulging in our international vodka bar featuring over 140 vodkas from 19 different countries! Q: Where do you draw inspiration from? How do you exhibit it at work? GW: Inspiration for me comes from many different inlets such as industry magazines, the food networks, local restaurants and bars, hometown San Diego's Gaslamp District, beach cities and north county, and of course, my family. All of these sources keep me and the restaurant current with trends (although my four boys would argue that I'm anything but current!).

Scott Winant DIRECTOR OF FOOD AND BEVERAGE, INDIAN WELLS GOLF RESORT Q: If you could drink one thing in Greater Palm Springs for the rest of your life (not from your restaurant) what would it be? Scott Winant: Water. Q: What are your three can’t-live-without spirits to mix with? SW: Any brown spirit, they are just so versatile and the possibilities are limitless, with taste profiles that are unique, unlike vodkas. Mandarin Napoleon, a blend of cognac and mandarin oranges. It has a bold distinct flavor and really enhances every cocktail used in. Chambord, I don’t know why, but I like so many, never get tired of raspberries and it can be mixed with any type of spirit to make a delicious cocktail. Q: What is your favorite drink made at Vue Grill & Bar? SW: Our Denny Booths Berry Bramble: Wild Turkey 101, simple syrup, fresh blackberries, Chambord and lemon juice. This cocktail is named after one of our regular

guests who passed away last year and Wild Turkey was his favorite spirit. Q: What makes you, or your establishment stand apart from the rest? SW: Our amazing selection of whiskeys. Over 250 now with 180 bourbons and 70 whiskeys from around the world (French, Irish, Scotch, Canadian and Japanese). Q: Where do you draw inspiration from? How do you exhibit it at work? SW: In life, I draw inspiration from my kids, they are my reason for going to work each day. At work, I draw inspiration from my staff, both front of house and back of house, who show up every day to work with a genuine passion to see this restaurant succeed. In 15 years and at several different properties, this staff from top to bottom exhibits more passion and professionalism than any I have been around.

John Lotz CO-FOUNDER, DESERT DISTILLING Q: If you could drink one thing in Greater Palm Springs for the rest of your life (not from your establishment) what would it be? John Lotz: Armando's Palm Desert—the house margarita is fantastic and there is a limit of two per person. Q: What are your three can’t-live-without spirits to mix with? JL: Vodka, rum and gin. We make them all and are really proud of them.

Q: What makes you, or your establishment stand apart from the rest? JL: We for one are a distillery and the only one in the valley.

Q: Where do you draw inspiration from? How do you exhibit it at work? JL: Other distillers, bartenders pushing the limits on new drinks and liquors. We have a tasting room to display our spirits also we go out to local festivals and events.

FRONT OF HOUSE MANAGER, LA RUE BISTRO Q: What makes you, or your establishment, stand apart from the rest? AM: Our incredible wine list! We have the basic staples that most patrons are familiar with, but also so many that many have never heard of! I promise that we have a wine that would suit everyone’s palate! And, not to mention, a great assortment of draft beers and full bar! We've truly got the full gamut.

Q: What are your top three go-to varietals? AM: My top three go-to varietals are chardonnay, zinfandel and a good GSM blend. All three are extremely versatile within their varietal, which makes them easy to pair in a variety of ways!

Q: Where do you draw inspiration from? How do you exhibit it at work? AM: I draw inspiration from all of the other wine enthusiasts out there! Reading wine spectator and other rating magazines. Taking trips to to wine regions around the world and broadening my horizons, and most of all, continuing to taste! I exhibit my inspiration by trying to engage my customers and educate them on new wines, or even refining their palates on the basics.

Q: What is your favorite wine at your restaurant and why? AM: My favorite wine would have to be our Dry Creek Zinfandel—I have always been a zinfandel lover, or better known as a "zinner!" The black pepper spice, mixed with juicy berry flavors always perks my palate! 64 LOCALE MAGAZINE

OWNER, BAR Q: If you could drink one thing in Greater Palm Springs for the rest of your life (not from your restaurant) what would it be? Donovan Funkey: The Little Owl at Seymour’s. It's delicious. Q: What are your three can’tlive-without spirits to mix with? DF: Whiskey. Always. It's my favorite spirit. Amaro—amaros can have a lot of different flavor profiles so they're always fun to add to cocktails. Angostura bitters. You can't make a proper old fashioned without them—and they're delicious on their own! Q: What is your favorite drink to make at your restaurant? DF: Probably whiskey sours. They're a bit time consuming, but they always initiate crowd comments. People always want to know what drink we are making when we use egg whites. And it's super tasty and looks rad.

Ali Mayo Q: If you could drink one thing in Greater Palm Springs for the rest of your life (not from your restaurant) what would it be? Ali Mayo: My current favorite beverage is a wine cocktail—the best of both worlds! Brut sparkling wine, with a Uncle Val's Botanical Gin float. Sort of my take on a french 75—unbelievably refreshing and perfect for the desert.

Donovan Funkey

Q: What makes you, or your establishment stand apart from the rest? DF: I think we are a happy medium. Part cocktail bar, part high volume party bar. We make good drinks but don't take ourselves too seriously. Q: Where do you draw inspiration from? How do you exhibit it at work? DF: I take inspiration from food. I read a lot of cookbooks and only watch cooking shows on TV. We make a lot of weird cocktails, but you won't see them that often. If you see some weird green juice or brown syrup behind the bar, ask about it though.

Q: What is your favorite spirit made at your distillery? JL: I would have to say our vodka made from Red Winter Wheat. It's a long process from grain to bottle, we do it all. First we mash the grain which is in the form of flour all the time adding enzymes to break down the starches to sugars. Then on to the fermenter tanks for a couple days. After that we do a striping run in-still which makes the whole distillery smell like baking bread. Then we re-run our spirit two more times through the still to get the desired alcohol proof. After that our vodka gets a cold filter and carbon filter to bring out the ultra smooth taste.

Frank Castleforte LEAD BARTENDER, THE LOOKOUT LOUNGE IN PEAKS RESTAURANT Q: If you could drink one thing in Greater Palm Springs for the rest of your life (not from your restaurant) what would it be? Frank Castleforte: A prickly pear margarita, it is the perfect libation after work. Q: What are your three can’t-live-without spirits to mix with? FC: Elderflower, it is the perfect finish to our handcrafted cocktails. Any flavored vodkas, they are great to mix with, as well as great on their own. Rye, a cousin of bourbon, every bar needs a quality rye. Q: What is your favorite drink to make at your restaurant? FC: The perfect drink for the cold winter season, the Roja Warmer, a mixture of Roja Raspberry Tequila, black raspberry liqueur, and hot apple cider. The finishing touch is a skewer of apple slices and fresh raspberries. Q: What makes you, or your establishment stand apart from the rest? FC: Our location is what makes us unique, being 8,516 feet above the Coachella Valley. Also, we use local ingredients for our restaurant and bar. Q: Where do you draw inspiration from? How do you exhibit it at work? FC: I draw inspiration from my guests, as they take in the majestic surroundings of Mt. San Jacinto with their family and friends. I create memories with my guests, I make sure they have a good experience, and it never feels like work.

Brent Engel BAR CURATOR, ROOSTER AND THE PIG Q: If you could drink one thing in Greater Palm Springs for the rest of your life (not from your restaurant) what would it be? Brent Engel: Hmmm … that's very difficult. However, I can say that if I could drink at one place in Palm Springs for the rest of my life, it would be Seymour's in Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. It's got such a comfortable but strong vibe and the drinks are great. Those bartenders really know what they're doing. Q: What are your three can’t-live-without spirits to mix with? BE: Gin, mezcal and rum. I could live with substituting a good mezcal in almost all drinks that call for whiskey. Smoky mezcals nicely fill in where Islay scotches would traditionally live. Gin can usually satisfy the vodka and aquavit drinks while rum opens all the tiki doors. Q: What is your favorite drink to make at your restaurant? BE: Gin gimlet. I've never met someone who doesn't like a classic gimlet.

Q: What makes you, or your establishment stand apart from the rest? BE: As a team, we have pretty deep experience from many sides of the service industry. Both Tai and myself started as dishwashers. We're vigorous in justifying everything we do. It all has to make sense on many levels. We consider accessibility, comfort, pricing, utility, and freshness before we move forward with an idea whether it's regarding the food, drinks, service, or relationships with our suppliers. Q: Where do you draw inspiration from? How do you exhibit it at work? BE: I always try to remember that people simply want to go out and have a nice time. We all have the same basic desires. If the food is good, the drinks are satisfying, the service is genuine, and the price is fair, then people will usually be appreciative of a place that puts all those things together. Remember, it's just dinner. It doesn't have to blow your mind, it just has to make you feel good.

Shagadelic J OS H AGLE Creates Some of Palm Springs’ Most Fun and Retro Artwork

WRITTEN BY: GABRIELLA LAYNE PHOTOGRAPHED BY: JANE CHOUTEAU

Expert: Josh Agle

Credentials: Painter, Illustrator, Designer of Shag Favorite Piece: “The one I’m working on now!”

Josh Agle is the heartbeat of the art scene in Southern California. Now universally known by the name Shag, the legendary artist has earned his acclaim for using vintage illustration art forms and aesthetics to convey poignant, contemporary messages about society. But don’t let his edgy attitude and sly sense of humor fool you — he’s a family man at heart, who celebrates a mellow SoCal lifestyle residing in a midcentury home tucked away in a wooded valley. In 2009, Shag opened a self-titled store dedicated to his highly popular works. Today, it continues to be a must-see attraction for tourists and native Californians alike. And at the peak of his career, Agle maintains a passion for his work that makes it clear he doesn’t intend to slow down anytime soon. He sat down with LOCALE Magazine to discuss his career, the inspirations behind his work, and how he merged his artful spirit with an entrepreneurial mindset that pivoted his worldwide appeal.

71

Q: How did you begin painting/illustrating and what inspired your first piece of artwork?

Josh Agle: I have been painting and drawing since I was a young child, so I don’t have a memory of my first piece of art. I do remember my first piece of “Shag” art, which I painted in 1989 for a band album-cover. I wanted to capture a vintage jazzy cartoon style with a little flat cubism thrown into the mix.

FIRST SHAG: u Josh’s first piece of Shag art was in 1989 for a band album cover. COVETED COLLABORATIONS: u Some of Josh’s awesome collaborations include: Disneyland, Playboy, Paul Frank Industries, CocaCola, and the City of Palm Springs. WHAT’S IN A NAME? u Shag is simply the last two letters of Josh’s first name combined with the first two letters of his last name, Agle.

Q: Your art merges retro illustration inspirations with a contemporary edge that speaks so well to modern day society. How did you hone in on defining your signature aesthetic? JA: In my paintings I try to capture the spirit of commercial illustration from the 1950s and 60s and use that to say contemporary things about our culture and society. The art has a dark sense of humor and the occasional macabre detail that wouldn’t have been used in the midcentury decades. The style, which some call retro, is simply the clothing on top of the actual heart of the painting—the themes and narratives behind the pieces of art. Q: What is the key message that you’d like people to take from your artwork? JA: I don’t think there’s a single distinct message, but there are recurring themes: the joys and dangers of consumerism, the importance of relationships and friendships to counterbalance the material world, and the importance of play and leisure to depressurize the responsibilities of adulthood.

“I wanted something memorable to sign on my art; it wasn’t my intention that people would call me Shag, but over time that’s what happened, and now the Shag name is much better known than my original name.” —Josh Agle

Q: How does your art and personal style merge to inspire your approach for Shag? JA: My earliest paintings were aspirational; I was painting things I wanted to own, places I wanted to be, and situations I wanted to take part in. As my career as an artist progressed, I was able to make my real life look more and more like the paintings. I live in a midcentury house full of the same kind of furniture and art you see in my paintings, complete with a partyfriendly swimming pool and hillside view. Q: What’s the story behind the name ‘Shag’? JA: Shag is simply the last two letters of my first name, Josh, combined with the first two letters of my last name, Agle. I wanted something memorable to sign on my art; it wasn’t my intention that people would call me Shag, but over time that’s what happened, and now the Shag name is much better known than my original name. Q: What inspired the initial opening of Shag, and what were some of the challenges you faced along the way? JA: My business partners in the Shag Store, Jay and MiShell Nailor, established an important gallery in Palm Springs, M Modern Gallery, around 2003. The gallery, which sold the work of many artists, began to see my share of their sales increase over time to the point where most of the gallery’s income came from my art. In 2009, Jay and MiShell proposed we open a gallery dedicated specifically to my work. I said yes, mainly because I thought it would be fun to design an interior! I also told them I wanted it to be called a “store," and not a “gallery," because I wanted to create merchandise based on my art, and I didn’t want to exclude people who weren’t specifically interested in buying art from coming into the store. Since the establishment of the Shag Store, the biggest challenge has been the need to create new art and merchandise continually. I don’t want people coming into the store and seeing the same things over and over, so I spend a lot of time thinking about new products and art. Q: You’ve enjoyed the opportunity to participate in major collaborations to recreate classic works from your own artful interpretation. What has been your favorite collaboration to date and how is your creative process different when working on these projects? JA: My favorite collaborations have been the work I’ve done with Disneyland. My own art was inspired by the attraction posters in the park, so when they approached me to work with them in 2003, I was both honored and a bit apprehensive. Since then, the art and products I’ve designed for Disney have become very collectable and sought after, and the

Disney connection has enhanced my own career as well. Q: How have you been able to create such meaningful relationships in your industry to make these collaborations possible? JA: My collaborations with companies such as Playboy, Paul Frank Industries, Coca-Cola, and the City of Palm Springs all came about because of people I had met who either worked at or represented those companies and were fans of my art. Q: What are some emerging trends you’re noticing in the art space that you’d consider incorporating into your own works? JA: I’ve noticed that natural materials and textures are making a comeback: grasscloth wallpaper, sisal flooring, wood paneled walls. I plan on incorporating some of these trends into my work. Q: What is your favorite piece that you’ve created to date? JA: I always say my favorite piece is the one I’m working on right now! Once I’ve finished a painting, I feel like I’ve lost some of the emotional connection I had with it while I was creating it, and I transfer that energy to whatever I’m planning next. I’ve never had a problem letting a painting or piece of art leave my studio once it’s completed. Q: Who is your favorite artist and how have they inspired your work? JA: I don’t know that I could say I have a favorite artist, but I do have favorite artists from each era. My pre-renaissance favorite would be Hieronymus Bosch. My early modernist favorite is Picasso. My abstract expressionist favorite is Mark Rothko. My favorite artist working right now is probably Jonathan Paul, who does pop-art inspired sculptures, but I could have a new favorite tomorrow. Q: How has your artwork and overall aesthetic evolved over time, in your opinion? JA: My art and aesthetic have evolved—the paintings and art have gotten grander and embraced a sense of scale that the early work didn’t have. I’ve abandoned a lot of the kitschier elements I used to paint, like skeletons wearing tuxedos or animals in evening wear to focus more on situations and characters that actually exist. Q: What advice do you have for artists who’d like to make a full-time career doing what they love to do? JA: I’d say to paint or create what really makes you happy. Don’t try to follow trends or paint things you think people will buy, but create art that is fulfilling and important to you as an artist. People will sense that you’ve put all your artistic energy into the work and will respond to it accordingly.

“I don’t think there’s a single distinct message, but there are recurring themes: the joys and dangers of consumerism, the importance of relationships and friendships to counterbalance the material world, and the importance of play and leisure to depressurize the responsibilities of adulthood.” —Josh Agle

he hired well known architects, such as Anshen + Allen, to design the plans and homes he built. Eichler was also seen as a visionary in that he built his homes with the middle class in mind. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe, the signature style of an Eichler home is plenty of natural light, as his homes were built with the intention to “bring the outside in.” He did so with the addition of skylights and large windows where residents could view atriums, and other features such as gardens and pools. The style of these homes is now referred to as “California Modern,” and are still admired today.

“We have added more home, neighborhood and architectural tours; world-class lecturers presenting about design-related topics ranging from Mexico City Modern to the architecture of John Lautner; and exclusive access to private residential properties that are rarely open to the public,” says Lisa Vossler Smith, Executive Director of Modernism Week. Not only does Modernism Week provide midcentury modern admirers with a unique way to appreciate the design of these homes and buildings, but it also brings a great deal of pride to the residents of greater Palm Springs.

Brought to Palm Springs by KUD Properties, the exclusive builder of licensed Desert Eichlers in Palm Springs, the Desert Eichlers are made up of five unique homes. Each carefully created in order to preserve Eichler’s original plans, the only minimal changes made were to meet code requirements, “We’ve tried to think about what he would do in every way. For example, the wood siding on the exterior of the Bay Area homes wouldn’t fare too well in the desert heat. A smooth coat stucco was the alternative with some fry reglet metal detail in the theme of the original wood siding,” says Troy Kudlac, Founder and Broker at KUD Properties.

“Residents and city officials have worked together for many years to identify, protect and restore the historic and architecturally significant properties in Palm Springs and surrounding cities,” says Smith. The planning and production of the events are done in part by local community groups and organizations. The investment made by the community comes full circle as the millions of dollars generated from the ticket sales are given directly back to them.

While building the Desert Eichlers, KUD Properties worked closely with the community, “We’ve made all efforts to use products from the local community and have teamed up with many businesses, photographers, artists, etc. to provide a product that the community is proud to call their own,” says Kudlac.

For those attending Modernism Week for the first time, Smith recommends checking out the Community and Meeting Place (CAMP) upon arrival. Open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., CAMP is free to visit and provides attendees with everything from information and ticket sales, to culinary and cocktail mixology demonstrations. Guests can also listen to daily design talks and view films in the CAMP theater. Although all 250 events offer unique experiences in a wide variety of topics including fashion, modern garden tours, and, of course, architecture, there are a few that are among the most popular, “Our top event continues to be the Modernism Week Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tours because they offer a comprehensive and entertaining overview of the exteriors of Palm Springs’ finest architecture from the upper deck of an open-air modern double decker bus.” Signature Home Tours, Neighborhood Tours, and the Modernism Week Show House: The Christopher Kennedy Compound, are also incredibly admired. With these events offering tours inside midcentury modern originals, newly constructed “new century modern” designs, and current architectural masterpieces, it’s not surprising that these events have become so well-liked among guests. Included in Modernism Week is Eichler Day on Feb. 18, featuring homes that were built based off the plans of developer Joseph Eichler. Having built over 11,000 homes in California between 1949 and 1966, Eichler was a pioneer as

Of the five homes, Desert Eichler #1 has become the most popular, as it was the first 21st Century Desert Eichler. Completed in Feb. 2015, the new owners purchased the home within hours of it being on the market. Not only was it featured on Eichler Day that year, it was also written about in publications like the LA Times. The house comes complete with an atrium and circular pool that has breathtaking views of the mountains. On Eichler Day, guests are able to visit Desert Eichler #1 along with the two most recently built Desert Eichlers. This event will include a panel and film in addition to the tour of the three homes. Troy Kudlac will speak in the panel along with other Eichler experts. After the panel, the film People in Glass Houses: The Legacy of Joseph Eichler will be shown and immediately followed by the tour. As a festival loved by both tourists and locals alike, Modernism Week brings midcentury modern aficionados an exciting 11 days to commend and observe this vintage style. All the while, donating the money raised back to the community. Giving its guests the opportunity to visit homes that are otherwise not available to the public, Modernism Week is unique, charitable, and a “cultural phenomenon.”

WRITTEN BY: CARLI CRITCHFIELD PHOTOGRAPHED BY: BIANCA SIMONIAN

Expert: Max Rodriguez

Credentials: Owner and Founder of Max Rodriguez Art

Double Take: Max has a twin brother, Felipe, who is also an artist.

Immigrating from Havana, Cuba at just seven years old, Max Rodriguez and his family not only faced a foreign place to live but also faced a major language barrier. These challenges did not stop Max from driving down his road to success, though. From Cuba to New Orleans to California and from fashion designer to artist, Max is an inspiration and proof that the only real obstacle that can stand in the way of your prosperity is yourself.

“Because of my graphic and fashion design background, I am inclined to design my paintings so that they feel elegant and decorative in a home, while masquerading veiled stories in every one of them.” —MAX RODRIGUEZ

Your bio on your website emphasizes a lot on your memories of your childhood in Cuba and how they have been a great influence for your artwork. What about Cuba or Havana specifically gives you the most inspiration for your artwork? Max Rodriguez: Cuba has been an influence of a colorful culture, Spanish late 19th and early 20th century architectures, Afro-Cuban religion and folklore, midcentury post-modern style and design. And, to add to all that color, a complex historical palette of struggle, endurance and survival that allows me to draw my stories and those of my family into my art. It has inspired all my artwork. My first full series was abstract focusing on land and sea and about my immigration. I don’t want all my work to be obviously related to my background in Cuba, but each piece is a part of my story. Whether I’m painting figurative or abstract, my experiences are deep, and sometimes veiled into the storytelling of my heritage.

Q

Q: You talk about you first finding your talent as an artist when you were five years old when your mother took you to an art class. Did you know then that this is what you wanted to do when you got older? MR: As young as I can remember, my parents would buy us all kinds of drawing materials that my brother and I would make paper cutouts of villages for our toys, as well as drawing family characters and with coloring paper to make clothes to dress them. I didn’t realize that I would make that a career choice, but we were always painting or drawing on anything we could put our hands on. My brother is my twin brother and he is an artist as well and my first figurative show was actually a dual show with him in Los Angeles. Q: When you were in school at Academy of Art University in San Francisco studying 102 LOCALE MAGAZINE

graphic design, did you still pursue your artistic talents with a canvas and paint brush? And why SF? MR: While studying in San Francisco, my focus was graphic design, which later evolved into fashion design. I painted very little then except for private works in my own home. I needed to work for a living and art was just a hobby then. I made the move to San Francisco because New Orleans was too small of a town and felt too slow pace, San Francisco was fantastic for me. My studies in graphic design helped me expand in fashion and was the core of the start of my career. Q: How would you describe yourself as a fashion designer? And is that description the same as an artist? MR: Great question! I feel my attraction to designing clothes with elegant lines, unexpected color and textural patterns— with couture traditions—is infused into my paintings today. Because of my graphic and fashion design background, I am inclined to design my paintings so that they feel elegant and decorative in a home, while masquerading veiled stories in every one of them. Q: What caused you to shift careers from fashion designer to a full-time artist? MR: The fashion industry at the time was facing a big turn-around and I thought it was time for a change. While I was designing clothes I was also working as a muralist and decorative artist, which allowed me to be self-employed and establish my own business, which I loved! I thought it was time to focus more on that and I could always go back to fashion. Q: It seems like you really enjoy using different materials when it comes to your artwork. Which materials are your favorite to use? MR: I truly enjoy the challenge of working with plaster on all my works. It allows me

to sculpt and build texture in addition to metallic leaf to give my paintings more depth and hints of Art Deco and modern interpretations of midcentury. Q: Do you have a favorite piece that you’ve done and what about it speaks to you? MR: One of my favorite pieces is Siempre Esperando (Always Waiting), a figurative painting of a lone man standing or waiting to make the decision to move forward or stay behind—a position we all find ourselves at various points in our lives that will bring change, good or bad. Q: What made you decide to move from Hollywood to Palm Springs? MR: I needed to expand my thoughts and mind to expand my work, and Palm Springs had both the skies and peace I desired. I had lived in Los Angeles for 25 years and the economy was changing. My mom lived close to Palm Springs and the community was great; Los Angeles wasn’t profitable for my work anymore and Palm Springs had a lot of opportunities. It was a good transition for me. Q: Any new and upcoming projects you are working on? MR: I am currently working on a few art consulting commissions for restaurants and a Los Angeles condominium complex that will house my paintings on 12 floors. Q: Your story and success as an artist are inspiring. What piece of advice do you have out there for people striving to become an artist? MR: I would tell beginning artists to paint honestly from what they know, paint from their hearts and create a life around art. It’s a rewarding and humbling experience to share. I also want them to know that it’s very possible to have a successful career in art. There are so many different avenues of art and for them to continue to expand and learn.

For the Love of Art Max went to Academy of Art University in San Francisco to study graphic design. This later turned into a passion for fashion design. “My studies in graphic design helped me expand in fashion and was the core of the start of my career,” he said.

Coming Up Next Rodriguez says he is currently working on a few art consulting commissions for restaurants and a Los Angeles condominium complex that will house his paintings on 12 floors. We can’t wait to see how those turn out!

RAE HOPE OF

Bianca Rae Shines Into the Lives of Children and Animals in Greater Palm Springs

WRITTEN BY: CHELSEA RAINERI PHOTOGRAPHED BY: JANE CHOUTEAU

From being voted Best TV Personality in Palm Springs, to creating a charity that benefits both shelter animals and young girls, Bianca Rae is truly bringing a “Rae of Hope” to those in need. Her mission is to give a voice to the voiceless by using her platform as a news anchor. In doing so, she has successfully saved countless lives of dogs and cats and given young girls the confidence and knowledge to become strong women. Bianca’s story is one of compassion, hard work, and above all, believing in herself despite opposition.

107

s a Chicago native, Bianca dreamed of one day moving to California. While attending the University of Missouri, she traveled to Hollywood during her summers to intern at E! Entertainment and KTLA. During her senior year, she attended a Journalism convention in Las Vegas to meet news directors from West Coast TV stations for critique and advice. Little did she know, this would be the beginning of her career. The fifth person she spoke to at the convention was the Assistant News Director at KESQ, the station Bianca works at now. She was flown out for an interview and offered the job on the spot, fulfilling her dreams of moving to California.

A

Bianca filled her early days in Palm Springs with volunteer work. As she was working at a local shelter, she met a dog named Jack. Although she had plans to adopt a dog later in life when she was settled down, she decided to adopt Jack at 22 years old. “All I can say is there was some soul-deep connection,” admits Bianca. She may have saved him, but he provided her with companionship when she was homesick. Adopting Jack launched Bianca into the world of philanthropy. She read about charities, and started volunteering with local non-profits. Having always wanted to create her own charity, Bianca felt that her next step was to create a mission statement and move forward with her goal. By using her influence as a news anchor, she was able to create a charity, the Bianca Rae Foundation (BRF), surrounding her two passions: children and animals. Feeling that these two groups are often overlooked, Bianca uses the spotlight that is put on her to her advantage, “Because of my job as a public figure, people listen to what I have to say. That is a big power and responsibility that I

have, therefore I am very delicate and precise about the message I send.” BRF hosts various events to aid in rescuing shelter animals and teaching young girls about leadership, health, and inner beauty. This includes events like the Faith, Hope, and Pups fundraiser taking place on Feb. 19 at the Empire Polo Club that benefits designated animal rescues. BRF is also part of the No Kill Coachella Valley Initiative, which is made up of public shelters and private animal welfare organizations to reduce the killing of animals in shelters. These initiatives include transporting animals from kill shelters to nonkill shelters, an event that was funded by BRF. In order to benefit young girls, BRF created the Rae of Hope Retreat where middle school girls come together to learn about leadership, self-love, and anti bullying from newscasters of KESQ. The retreat gives girls the opportunity to learn from strong female role models and mentors. While Bianca not only runs her own charity, she also volunteers for other charities as well. This could be intimidating to some, but

Small Screen, Big Dreams: Being a news anchor in Palm Springs has given Bianca incredible opportunities. She was fortunate enough to interview Matthew McConaughey at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, “He was very fun to talk to and we had a great rapport.” She also interviewed Reese Witherspoon and did extensive research on her films and production company in preparation. “I knew an interesting little fact about her English teacher that I could tell she was shocked I knew, she even got a bit teary-eyed during our interview… It was really a special moment,” says Bianca.

“People often tell me I'm too naïve in life and live with rosecolored glasses on, and I take those as huge compliments because I believe the world needs more of that.” —Bianca Rae

Bianca is able to balance her time between her job, foundation, and volunteer work. Using her planner and notes app on her phone, Bianca makes sure to write down everything she plans on doing, and is also very diligent about following through on her promises. She attributes her success to her family and her team, who she always makes time to see, “I believe you make time for people who are important to you.” Knowing that success in her career and in her foundation go hand in hand, Bianca sees her organization growing as her career does, “I cannot imagine having this career and influence that comes with it without doing something impactful,” says Bianca. Regardless of where her journey takes her, Bianca plans to continually help shelter animals and young girls to see their full potential. Ten years from now, Bianca hopes that adopting a pet will be the only option people will have, “I hope my foundation can play some part in breaking down stereotypes and letting people know shelter pets are not always aggressive and mean.” She also hopes that

public figures and celebrities will increasingly advocate for pet adoption. In regards to her mission for young girls, she hopes that in 10 years she is able to have a farther reach in her impact, and be able to bring in high profile speakers, “I'm very excited for the future of the Bianca Rae Foundation.” As for others who aspire to join the nonprofit world and one day create their own foundation, Bianca advises to find something that speaks to your passion and can have a unique impact. She also recommends reading plenty of books on leadership, management, and non-profits. By not ever letting others’ doubt stand in the way of her dreams, Bianca continues to move forward in her quest in helping shelter animals find homes and being a role model for young girls.

“Because of my job as a public figure, people listen to what I have to say. That is a big power and responsibility that I have, therefore I am very delicate and precise about the message I send.” —Bianca Rae

Go Getter: Bianca’s favorite quote is a line from a Sugarland song, "I ain't settling for anything less than everything." With Bianca’s aspirations, she never looks at obstacles as problems. She’s always able to find a way to make her dreams work, “How else would a 24 year old be able to sit at Thanksgiving dinner with her whole family and say "I think I'm going to start my own foundation.”

Looking Forward:

The 4th Annual Rae of Hope Retreat will take place Sept. 23 at the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort and Spa. Registration opens this upcoming summer at BiancaRaeFoundation. org.

Native Knowledge: The No Kill Coachella Valley Coalition is comprised of various animal rescue organizations throughout the Coachella Valley, one of which is the Bianca Rae Foundation. Bianca’s foundation has become part of the transport sub committee, and has funded three successful transports to the Oregon Humane Society.

“People often tell me I'm too naïve in life and live with rose-colored glasses on, and I take those as huge compliments because I believe the world needs more of that,” says Bianca.

Hello, GOOD-BUY D AV E K I B B E Y Achieves Success in a Buyer’s Market WRITTEN BY: NANDA DYSSOU PHOTOGRAPHED BY: BIANCA SIMONIAN

EXPERT: Dave Kibbey CREDENTIALS: Real Estate Professional FAVORITE CHANNEL: HGTV

David Kibbey, one of the top real estate brokers in the desert, has always been interested in architecture. A native of the area, he first used his knowledge of the desert to become a real estate investor, then turned his passion for helping others find their dream homes into a second career in home sales. He owns Dave Kibbey and Associates, and he is also a broker with HÔM Sotheby's International Realty. Dave lives in Palm Desert in a beautiful, 1990s Mediterranean style home that he fully remodeled.

FAMILY FIRST: Ò Dave is married, father of 6, and the grandfather of 9. DESERT COMMUNITIES ACCORDING TO DAVE: Ò Rancho Mirage attracts corporate leaders with its luxury homes in gated communities. Ò Palm Desert has the best shopping, dining, and entertainment. Ò La Quinta is a historical neighborhood going through great growth, giving homes lots of value appreciation. Ò Indian Wells offers super highend communities to those ready to enjoy a country club lifestyle.

Q: WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE? Dave Kibbey: I have always been interested in architecture. After I had sold another business, investing got me interested in sales and my wife and I bought some rental properties here and in Hawaii. I love helping people achieve their real estate goals. 114 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Q

What field of home sales do you specialize in? DK: I am primarily a listing agent working with sellers. I also work with buyers and sell about 30 percent of my own listings, too. At any time I carry between 25 and 40 listings in my inventory.

Q: How did growing up in the desert affect your process as a real estate sales professional? DK: I know the area like the back of my hand; I know the pros and cons of each city and their particular neighborhood communities. There are few communities in the desert in which I haven’t sold a home over the years. When a buyer tells me what they are looking for, I can match them with the area that meets their needs very quickly. My areas of expertise are Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, and La Quinta. Q: What are some features your buyers are looking for? DK: The statement “less is more” is used quite frequently today. They want open floorplans, less walls, less compartmentalization. Easy living.

Few buyers want the formal dining, formal living; they prefer to have a large open great room with bedrooms on each side, a great yard space, private pool space, and view. Q: Do you find that sustainable living trends affect what buyers are looking for now? DK: Very much so. People are becoming much more energy and water conscious. The funny thing is, luxury buyers can afford all the electricity in the world, but they are still very energy conscious, and do not like waste. A lot of new homes are being built with solar panels. Most of the new landscapes we are seeing here in the desert are complete with deserts capes and small patches of grass, if any. Q: What about home sizes, are they looking for McMansions or smaller homes? DK: Many homeowners are definitely downsizing. The sweet spot in luxury is between 4,000 and 5,000 square feet. They don’t want the 7,0009,000 square-foot homes anymore, except for the ultra wealthy, who still buy extra large properties, but those can take a long time to sell.

“Buyers who have been sitting on the fence are now coming to us now before mortgage rates are bound to go up. It is absolutely a great time to buy.”—Dave Kibbey Q: What styles of new homes are popular now? DK: Modern with walls of glass, open floor plan-less compartmentalization, top of the line appliances and finishes. I represent a new small modern home subdivision in Rancho Mirage called Makena – named after Makena Beach in Hawaii – where 10 new custom homes are being built. They are in the 2.8 to 3 million dollar price range, offering big views and super high-end finishes. Q: How has the process of buying and selling changed over the last few years? Does the advent of social media influence the way people buy homes? DK: Very much so. For example, my staff posts

every home I list or sell, any price reductions or changes to the status of a property on Facebook, and the effect is amazing. I sold five homes this year from listing them on Facebook. I used to also post videos to my YouTube channel to educate people about the process of home buying and selling, but recently I’ve switched over to writing reports on market trends. I post these market updates at the end of each month on my website, and clients and prospects really appreciate that. Q: What has been happening in real estate recently? Are we in a buyer’s market or a seller’s market? DK: We are still in a buyer’s market, and I see

that trend continuing, for one specific reason: inventory levels in many price segments far outpace demand. Interesting - as soon as the elections were over, it was like a switch had been flipped, and buyers just started coming out of the woodwork. We had a very busy holiday season last year when November and December are usually very slow. From talking to people, it’s clear that buyer confidence levels are up. That confidence carried over to this year. Buyers who have been sitting on the fence are now coming to us now before mortgage rates are bound to go up. It is absolutely a great time to buy.

Palm Springs real estate is getting a flipping great makeover thanks to Eric and Lindsey Bennett, home flipping powerhouse couple with small town charm. The couple has turned their love of flipping real estate into a home renovation show, “Desert Flippers.” Connecting over dreams to own, renovate and flip real estate, each half of the Wisconsin couple was in the middle of a remodeling project when they met. After just two months of dating, they completed their first investment flip and used the money earned to move across the country to sunny California. Along with their belongings they brought their love and love for flipping real estate. Lindsey and her brother Mike (“Uncle Mike” as he’s known on “Desert Flippers”) vacationed in Palm Springs as kids and developed a love for the windmill-adjacent city. Lindsey learned all there is to know about real estate sales and design by assisting her cousins in the highend luxury market. Eric is a Loan Officer, proficient in financing real estate as well as foreclosure and the distressed property market. Stemming from a line of successful real estate brokers, developers and commercial real estate owners in Wisconsin, it’s no wonder this couple has what it takes to make a successful home renovation show. From capturing hearts on game shows, to inspiring the masses through commercials, to HGTV, this couple is not camera shy. After a commercial they filmed

together, they were contacted by Glass Entertainment Group to make their own reel of their house flipping escapades. “It seemed like the best of both worlds,” says Lindsey, “working to flip properties and film together.” HGTV bought a full pilot episode and loved it so much they ordered a full season!

They battle desert perils from three-digit temperatures, to black widow spiders, to scorpions, to rodents, to fire ants. “The stakes can be high,” says Lindsey. “The market is volatile, but the profits can be great.” Palm Springs offers a wealth of variety for the Bennetts to flip. The couple remodels all kinds of houses in the desert – everything from midcentury modern to classic California ranch homes. Lindsey’s brother “Uncle Mike” is involved in the show, sometimes the voice of reason when it comes to certain aspects of house flipping. Three kids into their marriage, Eric and Lindsey balance family and HGTV life. They enjoy working together as a family, capturing candid moments on film for eager viewers to enjoy. “So, here we are today,” says Lindsey. “Eric has his dream jobs financing, flipping and filming real estate and I'm blessed to be home with my kids in down time and working in real estate and filming with my family. Interview With

Co-Owners Willie Rhine, John Paschal and Chef Chuck Courtney

Q: What inspired your love for food? Chuck Courtney: My parents were good cooks and I was always in the kitchen helping. They would have swanky cocktail parties and I would pass the tray of hors d’oeuvres. Food was sharing and entertaining. When I got older I watched cooking shows. Graham Kerr and then “Great Chefs” on PBS. Willie Rhine: I started my career in the hospitality industry with a 100 seat theater. I later worked as general manager for two successful restaurants. I enjoyed putting all the people in all the right places. It is exciting to do the same thing here in our space. We can create the perfect setting for two or 200. In many ways it is the same as running the theatre, my job is to direct the show and put everybody in the right spot. CC: Yes, there are many aspects of the restaurant business that correspond to show business. We cater to all the senses.

Described by co-owners Willie Rhine, and John Paschal as, “Our little home,” Eight4Nine embraces the fun and unique history of Palm Springs. From the original floor in the entrance, which announces the history of HOUSE 849, to the magnificent courtyard gates, the restaurant speaks for itself. Whether you are planning a wedding in the Grand Corridor, a small party in the Gypsy Room, or an intimate dinner on the outside patio, you are sure to enjoy the setting at EIGHT4NINE. 120 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Q: What sets you apart or is particularly unique to your restaurant? JP: We have Willie and they don’t. WR: Our setting sets us apart. Not many places can throw a party for six or 200 and do it well. CC: Our creative team, as a whole, sets us apart. Q: What is next for you? WR: Catering. We took the time necessary to allow the restaurant to run smoothly before we introduced catering. I have catered events throughout the valley for almost 15 years and I am very happy to say we are starting off to great success. Our guests can now experience, the same quality of food and service at our place or theirs. We provide the same quality food and bring the same team from the restaurant, ensuring the best possible experience for life's most memorable moments.

John Paschal

Q: What would you recommend to a firsttime guest? CC: The four-course dinner. It is great price and gives our guests a chance to sample different items. I would also recommend our 26-ounce ribeye for two. It is served with truffled potato planks. WR: One of our best kept secrets is our brunch. My favorite is our Scottish breakfast, it is the only one in the Coachella Valley. JP: I would also recommend some of our bar food. We have fried pickles and Southern fried bacon. Q: Why should a couple come here for a romantic Valentine celebration? CC: Our Valentine’s menu is a combination of our regular menu and several items that are special for that day. WR: A couple can enjoy a romantic booth for two, a table by the fireplace or request their own setting and experience any type of dining. JP: Eight4Nine is the perfect location for a Valentine’s celebration. We have room for everybody's mood or personality. We offer something for everyone’s dining experience. Fun, whimsical, romantic—we offer it all. Q: Your team is just as important as the food and decor of your restaurant. What makes your team special? CC: The team is huge! Great service goes a long way. I am in the back of the house. If one thing is off, it comes across to the guests.

Willie Rhine

Photos - John Paschal & Willie Rhine: Arturo Gonzalez

Q: What is your favorite item on the menu? CC: Having to pick a favorite menu item is like having to pick a favorite child. I developed the menu and have an attachment to every item on it. I guess it depends on how I am feeling at the time. For example, today I feel like the Lobster Macaroni and Cheese. WR: The Scottish Steelhead, followed closely by our Ahi Poke bowl! John Paschal: Our Chili Relleno. The batter is so light and fluffy and that cheese! When you cut into the Relleno the cheese just oozes out. It is so good! We use a really good cheese. I know, I pay the bill. I don’t want to sound cocky but we have the best burger in town. Oh, and the Carne Asada…

WR: We have a staff of a little over 100. Many of them have worked for me for more than a decade. The staff is crucial to the success in the restaurant business. You must have all the elements from the person who greets you at the door, to the bus staff. JP: Having staff with you for more than a decade says a lot in the restaurant business. Willie has done a great job putting this staff together. It seems like family. Happy employees translate to happy guests.

Willie 4 the Community: Willie Rhine believes it is greatly important to give back to the community. EIGHT4NINE proudly hosts many fundraisers for local nonprofits. Willie sits on the board of The Coachella Valley Repertory Theater and is a member of the advisory council of Sanctuary Palm Springs. Along with his life partner, Albert Gonzalez, he is a member of The Desert Aids Project’s Partners for Life and the Aids Assistance Program’s Jeannette Rockefeller Angels Program. Rhine and Gonzalez are also founding members of The Center’s Ocotillo Club.

Dean Sipe has an MBA in Marketing, as well as 12 years of sales and marketing experience in the telecommunications industry, real estate, and other fields. He has lived in nine cities in 10 years including Boston, New York, Chicago, Detroit, and Luxembourg–before sunny Palm Springs irrevocably stole his heart. Q: HOW DID YOU CHO OSE PALM SPRINGS AS YOUR HOME? Dean Sipe: Like many of my clients, I was drawn to the area because of its wonderful climate, diverse community, and beautiful architecture. I moved here full time in 2005. I owned a second home here, a midcentury Alexander, and then I moved to a gated community in Seven Lakes Country Club, also because of the midcentury architecture. 124 LOCALE MAGAZINE

What attracted you to the real estate business? DS: I have always been in sales selling global telecommunications. I also liked architecture, especially that of midcentury homes, so real estate seemed like a natural choice. After talking to several agents, it became clear that I couldn’t continue moving as much as I did earlier, and that I would need to establish roots, live in the community I am representing. Palm Springs has everything I was looking for in a community, so I took an opportunity with Pacific Union, and then joined Sotheby’s International Realty. I have been with them for seven years.

Q

Q: What kind of real estate do you specialize in? DS: I specialize in residential real estate, and my focus is on midcentury, modern and contemporary homes. In my opinion, a true salesperson can sell anything, yet it helps to have an affinity for the product which they are selling. As I have an affinity for contemporary, modern and midcentury architecture, the greater Palm Springs area was a natural fit for me. Q: What cities do you cover? DS: My representation spans the entirety of Coachella Valley. I believe for any real estate agent the primary focus tends to be where they live. My focus is in Palm Springs because I live in the city and because I am a midcentury and modern architecture connoisseur.

Q: What is your take on the current state of US real estate? DS: So far, 2017 has been a great year for real estate. We are all working with the new value propositions, keeping in mind that buyers are looking for value, not fluff. I'm coaching my sellers to focus on the value through buyers' perspectives and their sold home is proof of success. Q: What changes have you witnessed in the Palm Springs market? DS: When I started nine years ago, most people were looking to Palm Springs as a retirement community, where they could just relax and enjoy the sunshine. They are still doing that, yet I think the recession caused people to reassess their lives and priorities. Now, many people are not looking to retire in the true sense of the word. Palm Springs is attracting a more active audience who enjoy museums, golf, hiking, biking and other sports in better weather. Palm Springs offers that with its downtown, country clubs, outdoor living and shopping. It’s the perfect area to switch from city to resort lifestyle. Q: What are the most desirable locations in the desert right now? DS: It is hard to narrow it down as this depends on personal preferences, however, the city of Palm Springs is attracting a lot of attention due to the investments that have happened over the last few years. Downtown is being rebuilt, and people are very attracted to the energy brought

DEAN’S TOP 3 TIPS FOR A QUICK HOME SALE: 1. Clean and paint your home 2. Staging makes or breaks the sale 3. New appliances, solar panels, and low-maintenance landscaping can really sell a home

WORLD TRAVELER Sipe got his first passport at age 29 and shortly filled two of them by traveling around the world.

“ PA L M S P R I N G S I S B E C O M I N G H O M E TO A T R U LY D I V E R S E G R O U P O F P E O P L E .” — D E A N S I P E

Q: Do you see many first-time homebuyers? DS: First-time buyers dropped off a little after the recession, yet we're starting to see more firsttime buyers recently. Still, most of our clients are looking for vacation properties to use part-time. Since it is so easy to get to Palm Springs from San Francisco or LA or Seattle, we are getting more and more clients from there.

Q: What are some of these features? DS: People are interested in low-maintenance curb appeal. You don’t need to get rid of your grass and have only desertscape. You can do a lot with plants and artificial turf that give a resort feel and are also easy to maintain. Other things people love are pockets or areas of lifestyle. Whether it’s a courtyard with a firepit or a side patio for a conversational area, a BBQ or cocktail area, those things are always of interest to buyers because they can see themselves and their friends in the home having various types of fun events.

Q: What are buyers looking for in a Palm Springs vacation home? DS: Currently, people are looking for a finished product to go with a specific lifestyle. For example, the true midcentury enthusiast wants to see architectural authenticity and Palm Springs has a wonderful concentration of midcentury architecture. Also, most home buyers want three to four bedrooms. As many buyers are still working, an office or den is desired while still having enough bedrooms because people enjoy having friends and family visit. Open floor plans are hot on people’s list, and they also like modern appliances and upgraded bathrooms.

Q: What else should sellers do before putting their homes on the market? DS: If we get down to the basics, clean your carpet, clean your tile, and paint your house. A lot of people don’t like to do those things because they are an effort, and we want to present the home in the best condition. Most buyers cannot see themselves in a home that’s dirty and dated, so cleaning and painting are very cost-effective ways to make your home appeal to them. After that, staging is extremely valuable. Then we get into the more costly steps, like upgrading appliances, adding solar panels, and other steps, which a seller may or may not want to do.

Q: Would you suggest upgrading all homes before putting them up for sale? DS: To a certain extent. What I would suggest to sellers above all is to stay true to the architectural style of their homes. If you have an old Spanish property, don’t try to make it contemporary. Be authentic to the property you are in. Also, buyers are looking for features that add value not only to their homes but to their lives, too. Value can be added by defining spaces for life...work space, eating space, entertainment and lounging spaces are key. And outdoor space is key!

Q: Do you suggest taking these steps despite the costs? DS: I do. As my father used to say, everyone is willing to do 99 percent, yet very few will go the extra one percent. What I would suggest to sellers is to go the extra percent. I guarantee your property will sell a lot faster and at a lot higher price if you are willing to do that. Also, buyers are a lot more sophisticated and knowledgeable now than they were before because of all the information they can find online. It is important for sellers to keep up with the market as well, and listen to their realtor.

by such investment. It’s also driving in a younger – 20s, 30s, 40s – generation, too. Palm Springs continues to grow as a home and destination for a truly diverse group of people.

Powdery, white, soft sand beaches, clear blue water and amazing restaurants sounded exactly like the vacation we needed. Luckily for us, all of this and more, was waiting for us at the Shangri-La Resort in Boracay. Boracay Island in the Philippines is a four mile long slice of heaven that will deliver on all of your luxury stay vacation dreams without breaking the budget. We landed at the closer of the two airport choices that service Boracay, Caticlan Airport. Almost everyone that lands at this airport must take one of the multiple ferries from Caticlan to Boracay—everyone except Shangri-La Resort guests. The Shangri-La is the only resort on the

island that offers a private bus and boat service that takes you directly from the airplane, to a VIP lounge, to a private dock with a private boat waiting that delivers you to the resort. Even though we spent time exploring the entire island including the renowned Puka Beach, and the tourists filled 2.5 mile long White Beach, we found the most enjoyment within the boundaries of our resort. The resort has pristine private beaches, water sports rentals and a resort pool and bar that rivals any luxury resort in the world. We left the resort twice and both times we asked for a shuttle, the staff were surprised we were leaving the resort. There really isn't a reason to leave.

And finally, the notorious and legendary world famous aviator/producer/billionaire recluse Howard Hughes owned this estate. “This is a trophy home,” says HÔM Sotheby's International Realty's agent Leonardo Montenegro. “It's a one-of-a-kind because of its pedigree.” Since the architect is unknown, this home offers a 'Golden Days of Hollywood' connection. The ideal buyer for this estate is “someone who loves Hollywood history, a collector of sorts, who loves the idea of walking in the footsteps of Howard Hughes and sleeping where he slept,” says Montenegro. “Or someone who wants a trophy home and is looking for a one-of-akind [property]—an architect or designer, or architecture/design enthusiast who appreciates this type of architecture.” True to the architecture of the period, the three-level home is sexy and unique.

It was designed to take advantage of the incredible views of the valley and the mountains with the use of glass walls and its back to the road to ensure complete privacy. The carport, living area, kitchen, and two bedrooms en-suites are on the main street level and the upper bedroom and kitchen wing is only a few steps above the living and second bedroom area, with a third bedroom wing down a flight of floating stairs. The pool area is on a lower level yet, down another short stairway from the lower bedroom level. And the third bedroom ensuite, along with the spa, are on the lowest level, with the pool only a few steps below. “The house is a time capsule in which the owners have kept the integrity of its design and architecture,” says Montenegro. While the home has been substantially updated with new flooring and a third HVAC unit, the space maintains many of the original high-end appliances of the era like the oven, cooktop, and vintage tile in the classic ‘50s green. Because the house sits up high at the base of the mountains where Bob Hope's and Steve McQueen's homes are, along with the Elrod houses, this house possesses

incredible views from inside and outside the home. With amazing features like massive glass walls; amazing design and architecture; pool, spa, bar, and three separate outdoor lounging levels, you’re sure to feel as though you’re living the Hughes billionaire lifestyle. Be sure to grab a martini and lounge under the brightly colored pool cabana to fully encapsulate a day in the life of the film tycoon and create your own personal paradise. However, with the ample lounging space on the decks and by the pool, you’ll have to invite all your friends over to have drinks with you! It’s the perfect outdoor setting for entertaining with lounge chairs galore, a barbecue, and hammock. If you like the solitude but still want access to all of fabulous Palm Springs shopping and nightlife, you’re in for a treat. The privacy of this location in Araby Cove is extremely quiet and tranquil, yet less than five minutes from shopping, restaurants, cafes, museums, more. What more could you possibly want for your Palm Springs getaway home? With this location, it’s also a great property to use as a vacation rental when you’re away.
