BREAKFAST AT GOLIGHTLY’S
I love food. Serve me up some melt-in-your-mouth sashimi, decadent truffled mashed potatoes or even a greasy slice of ooey-gooey cheese pizza and I will be your new best friend. To me, there are few things in life as amazing as finding your new favorite restaurant or taking the first bite of an undiscovered dish. It’s like exploring the cuisine of the world with your taste buds!
macarons and magical unicorn cakes! Whether you’re a chocolate-loving traditionalist or prefer more eclectic flavor profiles, you’ll find the perfect dessert in their La Quinta shop. Of course, living in the Greater Palm Springs area isn’t just about great food, we also have amazing events! We spoke with this issue’s cover star and local celebrity, Kelly Golightly (pg. 38) about her role in Modernism Week, her philanthropic work and, yes, even her favorite places to eat and shop in Palm Springs.
If you are a culinary adventurer like myself, explore the globe with our Palate Passport (pg. 59) a guide for local foodies that will take you from Italy to Japan, all without leaving the comfort of home (or going through customs). Try some of the best tacos in the Coachella Valley, or dine on the freshest and most traditional dishes from Japan right here in the desert. Of course, we haven’t forgotten about those all-American favorites—from barbecue to burgers, you’ll find it all in these pages. And you can’t complete a meal without topping it off with an ultra, crazy-delish dessert. If you have a sweet tooth like I do, check out the sugary goodness at Tiffany’s Sweet Spot (pg. 68) where Greater Palm Springs local and “Cupcake Wars” star Tiffany Thorpe is serving up cake pops,
For fellow fashion mavens, check out what makes Desert Hills Premium Outlets (pg. 85) the must-shop destination for some of SoCal’s most popular influencers. If you love a great designer piece as much as I do, check out their fashion finds from retail stores like Theory, Saint Laurent, rag & bone and Fendi. Plus get their insider picks for the best places to shop, pieces to buy and names to add to your closet this year. While you’re likely recovering from the overindulgence of the holiday season, I encourage you to get outside and explore the dining and shopping options in your own neighborhood. You may be surprised where your local restaurant can take you!

From the moment Kelly Golightly opened the door and welcomed us into her beautiful, midcentury-modern home we knew we were in the right place. Golightly led us from room to room showing us her beautifully-designed space. Photographer Travis McCoy noted the glamour of the home, saying ”Wow, most places we go to for a shoot have one or two great locations for me to set up, but I could set up anywhere in this house.”
F
The house was photo-ready and Golightly was prepped for the big day. “I’ve already moisturized,” she explained as she hopped joyfully into the makeup chair located in her stunningly-appointed bathroom. Brian Bond, the makeup artist, was the consummate professional, and because of Golightly’s food sensitivities and autoimmune illness, Googled every ingredient in the cosmetics he used on her skin to be sure she was safe. Because time was at a premium, it was necessary for hair stylist, Malena Villavicencio to stand on a stool to do Golightly’s
hair while Bond worked his magic. Both Villavicencio and Bond worked simultaneously to make sure Golightly’s hair and makeup were perfect for the cover shoot. And then there were the clothes! Golightly chose from a rack of elegant, perfectlysized tops, slacks and dresses. “I love this!” and “Oh, this shirt will be delightful with these slacks!” were just a few of her bubbly declarations as she went through the sartorial options with wardrobe stylist, Kaylee Jackson. “Kelly was down to wear any and all prints, colors and stripes I brought to set and really pulled off the retro vibe with ease. She was a delight to work with and brought such a fun, positive energy to the day! Plus, her dream house is beyond gorgeous,” explained Jackson. Not to be outdone in her own home, Golightly’s own closet also drew exclamations of amazement from everyone who entered. The team had a marvelous day with Golightly, her husband, Fred Baby, and their fur baby, Odee Golightly. As Kelly would say, “Stay tuned,” and see what is coming next.

One look at her glamorous, midcenturyinspired home, and you know she is serious about her passion for the bygone era. Examples of her zeal for the time period are sprinkled throughout her home—the vintage record player in the living room and the book of Slim Aarons’ photographs lying open to the iconic photo titled “Poolside Gossip.” Golightly and her photographer husband, Fred Moser, even captured the reunion of Helen Dzo Dzo Kaptur and Nelda Linsk, the fabulous women from the iconic Slim Aarons photograph, 45 years later for a special talk with Nelda during Modernism Week.
O
Golightly, a self-described “Air Force brat,” fell in love with Palm Springs on a cross-country road trip. Her husband— known to her fans as Fred Baby—surprised her with a night at the Viceroy Palm Springs which was designed by one of her favorite designers, internationally-recognized, American designer Kelly Wearstler. “I fell in love with everything about Palm Springs, and one night turned into three nights, turned into three weeks, turned into three months. Every time we got in the car to leave, I said, ‘Turn around, I can’t do it!’ Palm Springs was pulling me to her.” Drawn to creative pursuits, Golightly attended the School of Communications at The University of Texas at Austin. Writing was her first love, and she originally planned to write professionally for television or a magazine. As it turned out, she started her blog when she finished college so she could write about what was of interest to her without limitations. Now with over 100,000 followers across social media, she’s an icon within her city and a modern muse for women looking to add a touch of glamour to their home or wardrobe. Inspiring others to create their dream life, Golightly focuses on the intersection between color, charm and glamor as her catalyst. Her goal is to share all the beauty and personality of Palm Springs. “Front doors are colorful, backyard pools are charming and cocktails around the pool are glamorous. Palm Springs is such a happy place,” she explained. “I hope by sharing all the beauty and color of Palm Springs I can inspire others to create their dream lives. It seems like a fantasy, but it is not [about] how you were brought up or where you lived. You can create the life you want. My first bedroom was a closet, so it doesn’t matter where you came from.” Golightly got her start as part of Modernism Week when she was selected in 2013 to be a member of the Mod Squad (not the hippie detective television show that ran from 1968 through 1973). This Mod Squad is an elite group of influencers and press chosen to share highlights from Modernism Week on
social media.“I loved sharing the midcentury architecture and colorful doors with my followers around the globe! A virtual trip to Palm Springs for those who couldn’t be there in person.” As part of The Mod Squad, she continued sharing the highlights of Modernism Week for two more years in 2014 and 2015. In 2016, she was one of the designers chosen to create a room in the Christopher Kennedy Compound: The Palm Springs Modernism Week Show House. With her background in fashion, she transformed the master dressing room in the Show House. The dressing room was dubbed “The Glam Cave,” and channeled the glamour of the Beverly Hills Hotel in the ‘50s and ‘60s, embracing the art of dressing. The show house was featured in many publications, including Traditional Home magazine. In 2016, she also curated a photo exhibit that was displayed at Community and Meeting Place, the hub of Modernism Week. With the success of her 2016 Show House room, Golightly’s house was chosen as the home of the Christopher Kennedy Compound: The Palm Springs Modernism Week Show House in 2017. This time the designers turned her 20-room, Spanish Colonial home into a midcentury-modern marvel. She did design one room in the house which she named the “Glamily Room” a glamorous take on a family room. The house has been appropriately named Villa Golightly. Unfortunately, in 2018, her participation at Modernism Week was limited due to an autoimmune illness. As happy and vivacious as Golightly is, she must contend with health issues and food sensitivities stemming from two autoimmune diseases: Hashimoto’s and Celiac. “We have had to completely overhaul our lifestyle. We used to love to eat out and travel, but now we have to make all our food at home,” she explained. “That stopped us from traveling for a few years as we figured out how to navigate this new life.” Of course, Golightly made lemonade from lemons. She and Fred Baby bought a Mercedes Sprinter Van that she designed in Golightly blue, which she describes as “almost Tiffany blue, but not exactly,” and white. Now she has a complete kitchen on wheels to take on the road trips that she loves so much. “I feel like I’ve gotten my freedom back,” she said. “I am excited to be exploring again—our favorite pastime—and I hope it helps inspire others with similar struggles and health issues to think outside the box and give them hope.” When she first started blogging, Golightly never anticipated that health would be something she would be writing about. By opening up about what she is going through, both in her physical and mental health, she has received countless notes from readers who are experiencing similar struggles. “I wish

An upcoming book, a TV project and product collaborations are in the works! She can’t share all the details yet. We will just have to stay tuned! SHOP TILL YOU DROP • “There are so many incredible vintage shops and thrift stores in Palm Springs,” says Golightly. Spaces, Revivals, Angel View and The Fine Art of Design are great for vintage; for new items try Trina Turk Residential and Christopher Kennedy. GLOBAL GOLIGHTLY • Golightly is drawn to destinations that are inspiring both for their breathtaking beauty and fabulous design: Capri, Cannes, Rome, Paris and Provence have her heart.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS • Golightly was a guest style expert on ˮThe Martha Stewart Showˮ and got to meet some of her design heroes—Jonathan Adler, Trina Turk and Kelly Wearstler. FAVORITE RESTAURANTS • “I love Melvyn’s, for the history and the fact that it was the old stomping grounds of the Rat Pack,” notes Golightly. Also on her list is the charming garden setting of Birba’s and the groovy, colorful design of Jonathan Adler’s Norma’s at the Parker. FAVORITE WORKOUTS • Golightly loves the simple things when it comes to workouts. Swimming in her pool or walks with her husband, Fred Baby, and their fur baby, Odee Golightly. Getting outside in the sunshine and fresh air, which Palm Springs is so well suited for. For her mental health, she practices Kundalini Yoga.

none of us had to go through it, but the upside has been that a community has formed, allowing us to lean on each other and share information,” she said. “Everyday I respond to at least one email or direct message to share what has worked for me in the hope of helping someone to live a much happier and healthier life.” Holly Golightly, a character in the 1961 romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the actress Audrey Hepburn, provide great inspiration for her. Discussing the film character, Golightly said, “She is just so charming, childlike and delightful. She found love and built a life for herself in a glamorous place.” Reflecting on Ms. Hepburn’s philanthropic work after her film career, Golightly disclosed her feelings on philanthropy. “Philanthropy is a two-sided thing. On one side it is good to share, and if other people know we are sharing, they might be encouraged to do the same thing. On the other side, we have a great concern for homeless children. People in my family have been through it, and that is something we don’t talk about.” In this spirit of philanthropy, $100,000 from tours and events at the Christopher Kennedy Compound Show House went toward architectural perseveration and education, including scholarships to local students. A life full of philanthropy, fashion, design, color and charm, has allowed Golightly to realize the beauty and glamour of the Palm Springs lifestyle. But ultimately, for Golightly, working with her husband and connecting with readers to inspire them to live their dream lives is the most rewarding. Stay tuned to see what 2019 has in store, as Golightly and her husband plan to be even more involved in Modernism Week in the coming years as they strive to give back to the community that has given them so much.

You Want a Piece of This? TIFFANY’S SWEET SPOT IS MAKING LIFE SWEETER ONE UNICORN CAKE AT A TIME
WRITTEN BY: SIERRA CHAPDELAINE PHOTOGRAPHED BY: LAURA PERKINS
The thought of sugar alone makes our mouths water; this craving always leads us into Tiffany’s Sweet Spot.
Whoever said gravity was the hardest thing to defy obviously never had a sweet tooth. The thought of sugar alone makes our mouths water; this craving always leads us into Tiffany’s Sweet Spot to be satisfied after we inevitably give in. All fresh and made to order, owner and baker Tiffany Thorpe serves up a wide variety of delightful desserts, from cupcakes, cookies and cakes to cinnamon rolls, cake pops and macarons. Although known for her cupcakes, she also makes lovely cakes as well—most notably the Unicorn Cake, which tastes just as magical on the inside as it looks on the outside. The best part? The color scheme and flavor are your choice! Thorpe uses both a delicious American buttercream and an Italian Meringue on the base of the cake before her team fashions the enchanting ears and horn out of a tender, delectable fondue that your Insta-feed needs.
W Unique-orn • The inspiration behind the Unicorn Cake came when Thorpe was searching for a birthday cake to make for her daughter’s seventh birthday. After making it and posting a photo, everybody had to have it. Close Quarters • The team at Tiffany’s may create largerthan-life creations, but they keep their baking squad small with just seven employees! Home Base • Before her sweet success in the Coachella Valley, Thorpe started on a smaller scale, originally selling desserts out of her kitchen.
Aside from this edible, mystical creature, Tiffany’s Sweet Spot serves a variety of other cakes as well, these ones being more subtle and simple, but delicious nonetheless. With countless flavors and colors to choose from, these grab-and-go, celebration-style buttercream cakes are perfect for any occasion, and Thorpe is more than willing to write a little something special on it for you! However, if your eyes are bigger than your stomach, Tiffany’s Sweet Spot has 21 diverse flavors of cupcake options to choose from. With everything from a traditional chocolate cupcake to complex flavor profiles such as tres leches (which happens to be their best seller), you can consider your sweet tooth covered no matter the craving size. But the hometown bakery has spread its roots out further than just its La Quinta home. Tiffany’s Sweet Spot has become such a master in the sweets world that they were even featured on Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” to battle it out among other cupcake connoisseurs! Thorpe, a mother of four, notes her children were a substantial reason as to why she started the business to begin with. It is a business that was started out of pure love; love that is embedded in each and every dessert that is curated in the charming little bakery. You won’t find specialty desserts like these anywhere in the Coachella Valley.

The Living Desert showcase the best selections from wineries across various wine regions. “We developed menus around the wines. For whichever season or month, we focused on ingredients that made sense during that time,” says Executive Chef Michael Milligan. Each evening of the series is designed by a theme. Whether ‘Classically Cool,’ ‘Locations,’ ‘Zinfest’ or ‘Country’ themed, guests can expect a menu curated with fresh, seasonal
items. For example, ‘Locations’ honors winemaking traditions from around the world. Paella is served alongside red wine made with grapes sourced from Spain; likewise, an Italian-style red is paired with veal-stuffed cannelloni. The food forms the foundation for the flavors of the accompanying wine, rather than overpowering them. “We tried to keep the number of ingredients low, so you don’t have all these battling flavors with the wine,” Chef Milligan
describes. And to ensure an effortless dining experience, Chef Milligan and the sommeliers from the featured winery attend each dinner. Hosted in different locations across the zoo grounds, the Winemaker’s Series brings guests indoors and outdoors for an experience integrated with the surrounding scenery. The Santa Rosa Mountains serve as a romantic backdrop on Savannah’s Landing, while The District Commissioner’s
House offers a stunning indoor dining experience. Don’t be surprised to hear distant howls or squawking from a few of the zoo’s residents—animal encounters do happen. “It’s a neat way to experience the zoo in a new way,” Milligan says. “It gives an opportunity to showcase what [the zoo] is able to do from a culinary perspective.” Just make sure the giraffes don’t sneak the zucchini roulades off your plate!

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but gemstones and other semi-precious stones are becoming a popular alternative. Contrary to the traditional diamond, gems provide more variety in terms of color and cut for first-time buyers, making each jewel a truly unique purchase. Paul Emerson, owner of Emerson & Farrar Fine Jewelry, provided his expert opinion about these dazzling stones and why they should be an essential part of your fine jewelry collection.
“The lovely thing is seeing how rubies look and feel on your skin. Even the stones themselves have a lot of qualities, colors and influence, so it’s fun to look at the historic aspects of how rubies fit into jewelry collections.” —Paul Emerson

I’m Nikki Prendergast, a fashion and lifestyle blogger now splitting time between Huntington Beach and Palm Springs. My husband and I have been escaping to the desert for as long as I can remember, and since buying a home in Palm Springs in 2017, we’ve made it our mission to explore all that the area has to offer. We love the midcentury-modern vibes, the desert views, the restaurants, shops and the fact that we can bring along our vizsla pups, Weeze and Wilma, to so many places. This time, I’m sneaking off to El Paseo in Palm Desert, located in the middle of the Coachella Valley, for some shopping, dining and maybe a little pampering.

Inspired by the timeless silk scarf and stocked with the most beautiful scarves, caftans, vintage sunglasses, midcentury-style jewelry and more, Candice Held screams Palm Springs luxe. You may know cannabis by a flurry of different names, but to HOTN Cultivation Co., what matters most is the quality and the assortment of products the shop can offer its customers. After three years of research, experience and building relationships in the industry, the shop has built a remarkable reputation and inventory. No matter what sort of product you’re looking for, it’s safe to say that HOTN has all the know-how and variety that a cannabis connoisseur could ever hope for.

EDUCATION STATION • The budristas’ expertise and dosing knowledge allow them to recommend the best products for the customers’ needs. “We pride ourselves with how we educate before we medicate,” says Fierro.
By looking extensively into their vendors’ growing processes and providing their budristas with valuable product knowledge and training, HOTN has created a place where both the recreational beginner and the seasoned patient can find and learn about new, high-quality cannabis products. And according to Co-Founder Rob Fierro, many of the crowd favorites come in the form of an edible. From mints and candies to pastries and drinks, HOTN’s 100 percent state-law compliant edible selection has a little something for everyone. According to the budristas, edibles offer great micro-dosing options, which new consumers are interested in. “We have micro-dose options like mints so you’re able to dabble, or a sparkling water that’s hop-infused with cannabis for those who want to try a different way to wind down after a long week,” notes Fierro. Among the mints and the Lagunitas Hi-Fi Hops drink are an assortment of pastries, which are freshly made from Kaneh Co, and an array of gummies that are perfect for beginners and those who are looking to micro-dose—as well as satisfy a sweet tooth! “You don’t have to be a smoker to enjoy cannabis,” Fierro says. All you need is to be open to learning about and trying something new.

Reset, Restore, Renew WE TRIED THE 21-DAY NUTRITION JUMP START FROM LIVE WELL CLINIC AND IT CHANGED OUR OUTLOOK ON HEALTH WRITTEN BY: DR. PAULA TRIMBLE-FAMILETTI • PHOTOGRAPHED BY: KENNETH ALEXANDER SCOTT
It was difficult to enter into Dr. Sonja Fung's Live Well Clinic’s 21 Day Nutrition Reboot without great trepidation. A 21-day cleanse? What could I eat? What would I have to give up? Would I have to drink some icky shake or juice? Those questions were answered the minute I opened the 21 Day Nutrition Reboot guidebook. The program is an extensive guide that focuses on the self-care and renewal of your body, starting with what you put into it. Filled with delicious recipes and restaurant suggestions, the guidebook is a supportive introduction to the foods to be enjoyed and, yes, even the things that are off the table, so to speak, for 21 days, while you restore yourself for 2019.

WEEK TWO
WEEK THREE
• The Reboot walks you through every step of the process, with tons of knowledge to keep you feeling your best as you start out. I began learning my new way of eating starting with my yummy, morning shake. I made some adjustments as the week went on based on the suggested food list and my own personal preferences.
• I am eating like a gourmet and feeling great. The recipes from the guide are all easy and delicious—roasted butternut squash soup, Mexican-style shrimp cocktail and grilled halibut with sweet potato “fries” are just a few of my favorite dishes.
• This will not be the end of my new eating plan; I feel great! Goodbye sugar cravings! The protein powder and green superfood are two ingredients I will keep in my pantry for a quick meal replacement, snack or energy drink before the gym.
Changing It Up • Lunch changed from a sandwich to a salad with homemade dressing, which was surprisingly easy to make from recipes in the guide. Pro tip—chop your veggies at the beginning of the week so you can easily assemble your lunch.

Getting Started
The program is an extensive guide that focuses on the self-care and renewal of your body, starting with what you put into it.
Eat Like You Mean It
Keep It Up!
New Year, New You
Dining Out • Good news! I can still go to restaurants! Tommy Bahama— among other local restaurants— has several items on their menu that are compliant with the 21 Day Reboot. The best part is there’s no guessing on what to eat, it’s all listed in the guide.
• The guidebook provides insight into how what we eat directly impacts how we feel, internally and externally. I am glad to have this tool in my good health toolbox for those times I overindulge. This program has so much to offer for continued good health.
Filled with delicious recipes and restaurant suggestions, the guidebook was a supportive introduction to the foods I would be enjoying.

For Missoni Lanza and Marlys Yvonne, the women behind Ara Pilates + Movement, Pilates is not just another workout alternative, it’s a lifestyle. With its clean, sophisticated and natural aesthetic, Ara invites you to decompress, relax, renew and heal. What better place to practice this than the laidback, desert oasis community of Greater Palm Springs? Lanza and Yvonne are ready to open their doors to take the intersection of mind and body wellness to exciting heights at their new studio in Indian Wells.
Ara Pilates + Movement started over 1,000 miles away in the city of Seattle. “We both were teaching in Seattle at the same studio, but we didn’t really know each other,” Yvonne says. “I had started working with a small group of private clients in a home studio at my apartment.” At the same time, Lanza was looking to branch out into home studios. After coming across Yvonne’s website, Lanza decided to contact her, and they met up for coffee. A partnership and a friendship were born. “It was kind of the first time we really met,” says Lanza. “So it was like, ‘Yeah sure, I’ll go into business with someone I know nothing about, but her vibe is cool, so sure let's do this!’” By June 2017 they had opened their first studio. With Ara, they both wanted to 118 LOCALE MAGAZINE

have dynamic, effective training, but with the luxury of a spa, “Pilates is a luxury service but sometimes it’s still being treated like a gym assembly line,” says Lanza. “You can’t connect to your body when you are around that many people. We want to change people’s lives, so why not create a setting where people can succeed.” This connection is important to them. Both arrived in the world of Pilates to heal their own bodies. When Lanza was involved in a head-on collision, Pilates helped her recuperate. “I avoided knee surgery and ailments through Pilates, I saw someone here [named] Shary Harrison, and she helped me heal, and I became obsessed with it.” Yvonne is a former professional ballerina, and discovered the world of Pilates when she suffered a rib injury. “My partner dropped me on my back,” Yvonne shared. “Going from dancing every day to laying down for two months every day was just completely life-shattering.” When a new business space development plan fell through, Yvonne and Lanza pursued their goal to open a new location in the Greater Palm Springs area. “We saw the opportunity of the desert,” Lanza says. “This place is a destination for wellness, and there isn’t really anything that caters to that demographic, so we saw it as a wideopen opportunity.” Ara was created with a unique vision in mind. “We are not looking at Ara as just a brick and mortar, we are looking at it as an entity and [are trying] to share this movement with as many people as possible through the studio, online videos, retreats, workshops and more.” They’ve carried out that vision into the look of their new location.
With handmade equipment constructed out of wood paired with adobe white upholstery, Ara’s new location doesn’t feel like a first, it’s a space with an elevated feel. It’s not just the interior that sets Ara apart from other studios, Lanza and Yvonne make their clients a priority, making notes of any complaints, restraints and goals of their members. Ara focuses on incorporating modern scientific research into their teaching to maximize the benefits to clients. “Certain moves that were used in the past are found not to be good anymore,” Lanza says. “But our team of instructors are highly qualified and have extensive continued education. Our staff has taken it upon themselves to take additional workshops over their years as teachers. Some of their areas of expertise include anatomy, gait patterning, prenatal + postnatal care, athletic conditioning, neuromuscular disorders, trauma and pain management.” One of the initial concepts behind Ara was to provide members exceptional knowledge and instruction. At Ara Pilates + Movement Studio, intimacy is key with treatment rooms. The studio will have three separate areas to conduct lessons at the same time—one small classroom and two private rooms. “Your environment affects your mood [and] your nervous system, so creating that clean space was important.” Both are proud to own a women-run, self-funded business. It is a way to show others that dreams are achievable, and to prove the saying they both stand by, “If you have the vision to do something, you can make it happen.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 119

CHECK YOUR SCORE • “You should be aware of your credit. That should be a big bullet point. A good credit score is important to lenders, especially when people are buying their first home.” 2
GET TO KNOW THE DESERT • “Know your market. Know your options and where you want to end up. You want to be an educated buyer. If you’re a client, you want to buy a home; you don’t want to get sold a home. There’s a big difference. At the end of the transaction, you should be very happy.”

GO DIRECT TO THE SOURCE • “Make sure that you’re working with a direct lender. That way, you’re not paying unnecessary fees and points. A direct lender will help reduce some of those costs. Make sure you’re using a lender that offers first-time home buyer programs.”

Anthony “Bermuda Dunes” Bauer, a highly successful broker associate with eXp Realty, has some great advice for anyone who wants to purchase their first desert home. “I know all the secret and best spots in the valley,” he explains, finding great success in showing people homes in neighborhoods that they might normally overlook. If you’re serious about buying your first desert home, here are some words of wisdom from a 22-year veteran of the Greater Palm Springs real estate market.

PLAN THAT BUDGET • “Start off by getting a prequalification. That way, you know exactly what you can afford. Most first-time home buyers buy a house on a payment, not a price. So it’s whatever you can afford in your budget, and shop accordingly.”

BEFORE YOU MOVE • “I always recommend houses for sale to be staged. If they’re empty, it’s worth the investment. You’ll get a better rate of return if you get a staging company. It’s always a plus.”

Dawn’s fitness journey began as a child. Growing up, her mother always worked out to popular VHS tapes of Jane Fonda or Kathy Smith, women who were always moving and looked happy and free. For Dawn, it was like looking at a dream. “I wanted to do that,” she says. For a class assignment in the first grade, she decided to make her own workout tape, recording it in her living room and then performing it in front of her class. “I loved it,” she recalls. “Back then I either wanted to be an artist or be a personal trainer, and I lost my way, but then I found my roots, and I went back into it.” Throughout her life, fitness has helped her find her center, especially when going through difficult times. “It was fitness that helped me shift my mindset and set goals that I thought were attainable and I could reach,” Dawn says. “I’ve never really worked out for the physical benefits, it’s about how it makes you feel mentally.” She applied what she learned through fitness to other parts of her life, pushing herself to obtain goals, try new things and get out of her comfort zone, “like taking a chance, or taking a risk and doing something that makes you uncomfortable,” she adds. For both Dawn and Katrina Scott, her Tone It Up co-founder and best friend, female empowerment and support was always one of the core elements of the company. “Katrina and I always push each other to follow our dreams and keep that path that we are on,” Dawn says. “We started with the vision of being able to create a community of women, because for both Katrina and I, fitness changed our lives in such a positive way. It became this breakthrough to overcome a lot of things.”
#Goals
• “I like to create a short-term list and a long-term goal list, revisiting every day and crossing them off. Making a list will make your goals feel attainable.”
Dawn was in her 20s when Tone It Up started, but the community of support she built allowed her to grow and evolve as a person over the years. “Sharing our stories has helped me grow and have a voice, too. A lot of women were tired of living on the surface and just ready to talk, not only about happiness and success, but our personal struggles and how we are growing because of them.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 127
Tone It Up, she explains, is a place where women can feel supported and empowered to make better lifestyle choices. “[We] provide women with the tools to have a lifestyle where they can live their happiest life.” For Dawn, fitness was always part of the career plan. “I always envisioned it, even as a little girl,” she says. But it wasn’t easy. “I had a lot of family issues that left me feeling lost. I turned to drug abuse and suffered depression for 10 years,” she explains. “I lost my self-worth and I had selfdoubts.” She said self-talks helped her persevere. “Whatever you say to yourself, you listen to it, so it’s about positive self-talk, telling yourself that you can achieve it—you can achieve anything— and then going after it.” Now, in moments of stress or anxiety, Dawn focuses on her patterns. Skipping a workout or meditation for a day is ok, but two or more means she knows she needs to get back at it, reflect on everything she has already overcome and power through. “I now know that ‘You can overcome anything, you’ve already gone through everything, you can do it, it’s not that big of a deal. Just keep moving.’” Part of maintaining her healthy lifestyle is knowing when to take a break—and a change of scenery never hurts! When Dawn needs a reprieve, her Palm Springs home is the perfect place to help her find her center. “Palm Springs is an oasis in the middle of the desert,” she says. “Life just slows down here.” Here, she can escape from the daily rise and grind from Los Angeles, where she is based, and breathe. “Palm Springs is my getaway, I love the mountains, the pool [and] the fresh air,” she explains. “There is an energy about the mountains that just reinvigorates you all over.” Dawn and her husband, Bobby Goldstein, real estate agent at The Agency, Palm Springs and Venice Beach, fell in love with the lifestyle. “We engulfed ourselves at places where the Rat Pack hung out,” she says. For the couple, as soon as they pull onto Highway 111, the Frank Sinatra tunes turn on and martinis by the pool become the norm. 128 LOCALE MAGAZINE
Her new Palm Springs home radiates with this distinct personality. Dawn and Goldstein are both fans of midcentury-modern architecture and their home is replete with these details. “We became obsessed with it. Our house was built in 1959 and we remodeled it ourselves,” she notes. “It was a bit of the ugly duckling in the neighborhood,” adds Goldstein. But the couple was attracted to the fact that the bones of the midcentury-modern home were still there, even after a 1963 extension that added a casita. The layout allowed them to have their privacy, even when guests visit.
“Palm Springs is an oasis in the middle of the desert. Life kind of just slows down here.” —Karena Dawn
The casita’s interior design is bathed in saturated hues inspired by Verner Panton and 1970s Space Age design. Multicolored, psychedelic-patterned walls, vinyl discs of Fleetwood Mac and Frank Sinatra, rich garnet carpets and lush plants wrap around corners to decorate the space. “It’s half planning, half collecting to focus on what we truly wanted to do. Although it’s period-correct with the rest of the house’s interior, the casita explores a different design trend of the time,” Dawn explains. “Each year we go to Modernism Week in Palm Springs, and usually buy one special piece,” Goldstein says as he points to a tall globe lamp on display by the sofa. In the main house, warm glam and metallic accents dominate the inside. “Although the house is midcentury modern, we chose the late ‘60s, early ‘70s interior design,” he adds. “It’s just a little more fun [and] comfortable than structured midcentury. We went periodcorrect on the outside but on the inside we want to have fun—we want to walk into a room and feel it.”
