Crazy Little Thing Called Mod Revivals Furnishings and a Dreamy Airbnb Are a Match Made in Heaven

editor's note Goodbye, 2019. For many, you were a year of trials and tribulations, of tremendous highs and lows. You were tumultuous to say the least, but don’t worry— we don’t blame you. There must be a lot of pressure being the last representation of your decade. But, as they say, hindsight is 20/20. Much like any new year, 2020 ushers in a feeling of beginning, of hitting the proverbial reset button. But the start of this new decade feels even more refreshing—like the shocking but welcome chill of jumping in the pool after soaking in a hot tub. In the wake of February, LOCALE is keeping the kick-off of the Roaring ‘20s going strong. Not only do we have some amazing new looks in this issue—most notably our huge A-Z Foodie Guide, encompassing all things tasty in Greater Palm Springs (pg. 63)—but we also have incredible faces and places gracing our pages. Among them is Jeremy Smick and Samantha Caltagirone from Thick as Thieves (pg. 106), Mark Anton from

AAP Food Samaritans (pg. 122) and Steven Henke from Revivals (pg. 142). Although they all do very different things and share their very different stories, what unites them is a passion to serve others while making the world a more sustainable, more wholesome and more beautiful place. Finally, we have the gorgeous and brilliant Paige Spiranac on our cover at the sunny Hotel Paseo, where she tees up to chat about anti-bullying, women’s empowerment and, of course, future plans. What better way to swing into the new year than that? Whether you’re sitting in a coffee shop, seeking solace in your favorite chair at home or taking us with you in your carry-on during your next big adventure, I’d like to make a toast to the LOCALE team, to 2019, to 2020 and, of course, to you. So raise your reusable coffee tumblers, your end-of-the-day wine glasses and your travel-sized sodas, and cheers to a year well-spent and to a year full of surprises and possibilities. We’re looking forward to sharing it all with you.

Photographed By: Travis McCoy, travismccoy.com @travis_mccoy_photography Model: Paige Spiranac, @_paige.renee Location: Hotel Paseo, 45400 Larkspur Ln, Palm Desert, CA 92260 Written By: Lauren McCarran, asaltyblue.com | @lomccarran Styled By: Neil Cohen, neilcohenstyle.com | @neilcohenstyle Hair & Makeup By: Danielle Brucklacher, www.faceandhaircandy.com | @daniellestyleshair Dress Provided By: Saks Fifth Avenue, Rococo Sand, www.saksfifthavenue.com Sunglasses Provided By: Oliver Peoples, www.oliverpeoples.com

Dressed in a light blue jumpsuit with a cappuccino in hand, Instagram influencer and former golf-pro Paige Spiranac is a natural beauty in cashmere at Locale’s Palm Springs cover shoot. During the shoot, Spiranac continued to wow in every look she tried on, garnishing attention from every angle—even Spiranac’s husband, couldn’t help shouting, “Who’s that hottie?” from their hotel balcony, which overlooked the set.

D

G-L-A-M With Hotel Paseo’s Glam Room at her disposal, hair and makeup stylist Danielle Brucklacher decided to go with a simple loose curl and natural makeup for Spiranac’s close-up. Despite the name of the dressing room, Brucklacher shared after the shoot that she loved “all the glam looks,” but her favorite by far was “the comfy cozy look in the airstream.” The Perks of Being a Wallflower “Up on the wall, hands down,” says wardrobe stylist Neil Cohen when asked about his favorite location on set. In high heels and a flowing baby blue dress, Spiranac was escorted up a ladder where she twirled and moved across an 8-foot concrete wall with a bright yellow, cursive “California” scrolled across it. “I love how she was able to move and make the dress move… She danced with the clothes,” Cohen notes.

Palm Desert

Good Enough to Eat For the cover shot, Spiranac was dressed in a flirty, maxi dress with a colorful leopard print that popped against the bright yellow background. “It was so much fun to wear and it was really pretty,” Spiranac says. “I also got to pose with some fun food props.” Her accessory? A big, juicy hamburger from AC3 that had everyone on set drooling. Written By: Lauren Lewellen

Ò Over the years, we’ve really enjoyed Shame on the Moon. It really is a neighborhood restaurant where many of our friends gather from time to time. Anything that Milan and his crew do on the grill is delicious, and their staff is friendly and experienced. www.shameonthemoon.com

EAST MEETS WEST

Ò Wang’s Chinese Cuisine in Cathedral City is a small local restaurant with fresh food and a very kind staff. It’s terrific for a quick dinner or take out—I really like their spare ribs and shrimp egg foo young; you have to try it and see for yourself. www.wangschineseca.com

KEEP IT SWEET

Ò Lulu is great for people-watching from the patio, on the terrace and at the busy bar—and the food is delicious. Start out with a tasty fish chowder that’s chock-full of seafood, followed by perfectly cooked escargot (oh yes, I dip the fresh-baked house bread in the butter sauce). Then try a superbly prepared fillet of fresh Atlantic salmon, and finish it off with Lulu’s signature triple chocolate cake.

ROSEWATER

Healthy, but Make It Fun!

Ú Next time you’re cooking, why not include CBD? Thanks to oils and crystals, adding a dash or a sprinkle of CBD to your favorite meal is easy to do. And since there’s no THC, you’ll be able to feel full and zened out—without getting the munchies. 4

East Meets West

Ú With bold flavors and healthy ingredients, Middle Eastern food is making its way into the homes of millions. One flavor that’s stealing the spotlight in particular is rosewater. A staple in traditional Middle Eastern ingredients, rosewater can add a bright, floral hint to pastries, proteins and cocktails.

With two million followers on Instagram and over 94,000 subscribers on YouTube, you can’t ignore the endearing vulnerability and the effortless cool-girl vibe of golf influencer PAIGE SPIRANAC. She is a stunningly audacious powerhouse of talent, sophistication and brilliance, and she has proven to be a formidable force with more to offer than meets the eye. Her critics have underestimated her impact and have unsuccessfully tried to diminish her accomplishments, but she’s just getting started. 54 LOCALE MAGAZINE

A LITTLE BIRDIE TOLD US •The pace of play is her biggest golf pet peeve. “If a round takes too long, I’m not playing,” she says in a partially sarcastic yet serious manner. She’s also bothered by people who take the game too seriously and are overly strict with the rules.

“The people who talk about me don’t really know me.” —PAIGE SPIRANAC Behind the bombshell image is a talented and bright young woman who’s looking to modernize the game of golf and bring optimism to the internet. Spiranac's love of golf has led her on a journey she never could have imagined, and it is far from the end. With new business ventures ahead and a legion of dedicated fans, there's no stopping her from continuing to push boundaries and knock down barriers.

B

Spiranac was born into a family of athletes; her father played college football, and her mother was a professional ballerina. She was bound to thrive in sports, so after sustaining multiple injuries that ended her dream of becoming an Olympic gymnast, her father introduced her to golf. Bullied as a young girl, Spiranac found solace in golf and loved the solitude it provided. But even after bringing a monumental victory to her college team (she took San Diego State University to its first-ever Mountain West Conference Women’s Golf Championship her senior year), continuing to grow a loyal fanbase and beginning to play professionally in 2016, she was disappointed by the culture of the game. "I always felt like a bit of an outcast," Spiranac says about being a woman in a maledominated sport. "You don't feel like you're respected or that what you do matters."

APPAREL PROVIDED BY: St John www.stjohnknits.com

Being a beautiful woman overshadowed her talent as a golfer. Spiranac was often slutshamed and criticized for her choices—and still is to this day. Whether it's for what she's wearing on the course or a photo she posts on Instagram, the judgment comes regardless. "The people who talk about me don't really know me,” she explains. “I really had to find a good support group outside of social media and golf. I relied on them heavily." LOCALE MAGAZINE 55

“I try to be as open and honest as possible. Social media is a highlight reel, so I try to talk about everything—the good and the bad.” —PAIGE SPIRANAC

The criticism still gets to her on occasion, but she aims to stay true to herself. Many critics question whether she deserves her praise as a golfer, and many believe she uses her looks to get attention—an obviously dated opinion on how a woman should act and dress. Spiranac has handled contemptuous comments with poise and humor, and rather than giving in, she is leading a new generation forward with a more powerful message.

T

"Women can be anything they want," Spiranac says. "I hate comments that question whether I'm a model or golfer. Why can't I be both? I am so many things. I try to be myself. Everyone feels empowered in different ways." Her sentiments could not be more truthful, and they set vital precedent for younger generations. Spiranac stopped playing golf professionally after her first year. "I needed a mental break," she explains. "I don't think I'm done forever, but I wanted to try something different. Golf was my life for a long time. It's nice to actually enjoy it now.” Spiranac continues to gain attention for her undeniable beauty and enviable physique, but her upbeat personality and sunny disposition are gaining supporters by the thousands. YouTube has become a powerful platform for the professionalgolfer-turned-influencer, and it has allowed her to build a channel where her followers can hear her golf tips, follow along with a quick workout and get to know her on a more personal level. She often films videos off of the course and invites her audience into her own home and heart. Spiranac touches on some heavy subjects, including personal stories of her struggles with 56 LOCALE MAGAZINE

being bullied. Her intimate experiences prompted her to become an ambassador for The CyberSmile Foundation, a nonprofit anti-bullying organization. She has devoted exponential hours helping to raise awareness and funds for anti-bullying, a cause that is and will remain very dear to her heart. She also delves into her battle with anxiety and how she manages stress and panic attacks. "CBD oil has been a life changer—even my dog takes it," Spiranac says. "Working out, eating right and other little changes make such a big difference. I've really come to manage it." In sharing intimate details about her life, she hopes to shine some of her positive light onto those who can relate and might be struggling as well. She wants to give people a place of hope and provide support for anyone that feels alone or isolated. Her affirmation is in being authentic; that's how she creates her happiness. Although she loves to connect with her fans on a deeper level, Spiranac prefers to keep things light-hearted and fun. Her end goal is to provide a cheerful, sunny-side-up kind of escape for people. "Life is really hard sometimes,” she notes. “I want to be goofy, have fun and make people smile." Her content inspiration not only comes from her own experiences, but from conversations with friends and suggestions from her subscribers as well. Spiranac curates 100% of her social media content herself. She appreciates having complete control over what she's broadcasting and how open she chooses to be. "I like to be as authentic as possible,” she explains. “When I upload, it's me who shot it and edited it, and it's me responding [to comments]."

LET ‘EM TALK •Spiranac realized her image would always be a topic of conversation when she posted a picture of herself in a black turtleneck with black leggings, and critics still thought she was dressed “too sexy.”

ROOM FOR GROWTH •Spiranac has never thought of herself as a role model. “I’m not quite the role model I want to be yet. I am in the sense that I’m true to who I am, and I haven’t changed,” she says. “I can be a better role model. I want to be as great as I can be.”

ON THE GRIND •She stays busy with her current and upcoming projects but never feels overworked. “I’m very passionate. When I wake up, I’m excited to work. I want to do more. I love what I do,” Spiranac explains.

NOT SUPERSTITIOUS... BUT A LITTLESTITIOUS •When playing golf professionally, if Spiranac had a great round, she would eat the same breakfast she had that day, believing it might bring her luck.

Through vlogging, Spiranac found a new outlet for spreading positivity. In her videos, she's buzzing with eagerness and always emphasizing the importance of never changing who you are to fit in. "I try to be as open and honest as possible,” she says. “Social media is a highlight reel, so I try to talk about everything—the good and the bad."

T

Spiranac is currently working in partnership with iHeart Radio on a podcast which will center around lifestyle and golf (much like her YouTube channel), but with more in-depth conversations and a lack of topic restrictions. “A lot of people have misconceptions about who I am or who I want to be," Spiranac explains. "People will get to know me a lot better [through the podcast].” During her golf career, she always felt like a bit of an outsider and was often mistreated. And yes, she will be telling these stories and dishing out all the juicy details on her podcast. In turn, she will undoubtedly ruffle some feathers, but that honesty is why she is so well-loved. In the past, Spiranac would filter herself and not speak of milestones in fear of being judged, but she's ready to talk fully uncensored and clear up any false impressions of who people think she is. Also on the agenda: featured guest spots! Listeners will get to hear her riff with some pals from her golf days! Further expanding her influence, Spiranac is teaming up with USA Today Sports to launch a new website where she will write about life, fitness and, of course, golf. All of her content will live together on one site, which means easy access to her golf tips, life advice and fitness inspo. A roaring voice for a new generation, Spiranac is encouraging women to be who they are and not compromise themselves for anyone. She is proof that a woman can be empowered while embracing her sexuality and femininity. Her positivity is infectious, and her dedication to making the internet a better place is inspiring. If there’s one thing you can always count on, it’s that Spiranac will bring a smile to your face—one blog, vlog or podcast at a time. LOCALE MAGAZINE 59

E Is for Ecological CITRUS & PALM PROVIDES SUSTAINABILITY AND ELEVATED TASTE

Name: Paul Hancock Job Title: Executive Chef, Citrus & Palm

Indian Wells

Chef Hancock has been the executive chef at Citrus & Palm since 2016, and he’s had an ecofriendly influence on the restaurant with his efforts to think globally and act locally. Supporting small farms is his primary way of reducing his culinary footprint. “I want the freshest ingredients I can get my hands on,” says Chef Hancock, about buying from local farmers. “I’d rather have things that grow naturally. I don’t need a perfectly round apple; I care about how it tastes.” All of the fruits and veggies on the menu are locally sourced—some can be found right in the hotel’s own lush garden. Even the variety of meat on their menu is of the highest standards, such as the heritage breed of pig in their signature entrée, Mangalitsa Tomahawk Pork Chops. “I want to share an experience and tell a story with the food,” Chef Hancock explains, referring to his provisions. He believes in simplicity and fewer ingredients, reducing waste and elevating taste.

“I’d rather have things that grow naturally. I don’t need a perfectly round apple; I care about how it tastes.”

Paul Hancock is the culinary composer of Citrus & Palm at Miramonte Indian Wells Resort & Spa, a Curio Collection by Hilton. For Chef Hancock, it all started on a small island off of North Carolina, where he remembers a passion for food simmering inside him. He followed his curiosity to many places, including the French Alps, where he did his chef apprenticeship at L’Auberge de L’Eridian. Finding a home at Citrus & Palm, Chef Hancock marinates his French cooking techniques with his southern hospitality to give diners a fresh culinary experience, all while practicing sustainability.

include teppan shrimp, tempura, filet mignon, steak, calamari and chicken teriyaki, along with a variety of sushi offerings. “Our tiger prawns are very popular too,” adds Chef Jose Valdez. Kobe Steak House doesn’t skimp on portions, either. Included with dinner are a shrimp appetizer, white rice, miso soup, vegetables and a dessert of green tea ice cream or sherbet. Besides being highly trained at teppan cooking, Kobe’s chefs are a lively bunch. Chef Valdez slices an onion on the grill, creating a “volcano” by lighting a flame in the center.

TEPPAN-STYLE COOKING THAT ENDURES THROUGHOUT THE YEARS Kobe Japanese Steak House has been a staple in Rancho Mirage for 40 years. Not a lot has changed during this time, as this traditional Japanese restaurant maintains a loyal following of customers and snowbirds who come for the great service and teppan-style cooking.

The teppan shrimp appetizer is tender and grilled to perfection. The ginger sauce for vegetables and spicy mustard for steak provide tasty accompaniments, and their teriyaki sauce is made in-house. A little lemon, butter, soy sauce and just the right amount of time on the grill results in tender medium-rare steak, scallops and chicken teriyaki—all bursting with mouth-watering flavor. “There are no secrets,” Chef Valdez says when describing Kobe’s simple, tried-but-true cooking preparations. Museum, Persimmon Bistro offers a convenient diversion for tourists and hungry locals alike. Equal parts espresso bar, wine bar and French bistro, this eatery presents a variety of culinary options. Owner Art Vasquez crafted a menu inspired by his passion for wine country, craft beer and home cooking.

u The Parker is one of Palm Springs’ headline hotels, but Counter Reformation is its sinful little secret. So hidden, you might take a couple of wrong turns before heading into this modernday speakeasy. A name drawn from a 16thcentury religious movement also hints towards an elevated approach to counter service with indulgent tapas and esoteric wines.

u Since opening in 2015, Rooster and the Pig has become a local favorite for authentic Vietnamese cuisine. A slight detour from the main strip, it’s a convivial scene of bustling energy. Owner and Chef, Tai Spendley, serves up a variety of dishes inspired by the street foods of his homeland, adding his trademark to the cuisine with fresh, local ingredients.

FOOD

FOOD

FOOD

u Sip wine with housemade hummus or enjoy fresh, vibrant lunch items like albacore tuna salade Nicoise and the jamón serrano panini. Vasquez ensures each charcuterie board is its own unique curation.

u Quail eggs with caviar and creme fraîche is a plate

of decadent debauchery. Other guilty pleasures include fresh-shucked oysters, “faux” gras, beef carpaccio and jamón ibérico, which is sliced to order.

u Start with the spicy okra or butternut squash roll. Fermented jasmine tea leaves make for an intriguing salad before moving onto signatures like the sautéed eggplant and shaking beef.

DECOR

DECOR

DECOR

u With the bustling ambiance of a Parisian bistro, the jungle-inspired wallpaper and a quaint outdoor patio situated in the sculpture garden, this rustic cafe is a visual delight.

u Other than the imported Spanish confession booth, it’s bar seating only in this dimly lit, narrow room. Counter Reformation is an intriguing balance of 16th-century eeriness and bright modernism.

u A minimalist open space features repurposed wood tables and an array of Vietnamese and local collectibles. Everything from the flatware to the charming decor has a quirky, individual touch.

foodie /// guide

Directions:

1. In a medium bowl, add the cubed chicken and toss with the lime juice and sea salt. Stir well and set aside.

3. In a large sauce pot, melt the coconut oil over high heat. Add the mustard seeds. When they begin to pop, reduce the heat to medium and add the chopped onions, diced green chilies and turmeric. Stir frequently until onion is soft and translucent (about 5 minutes). 4. Add garlic & ginger, letting fry for 30 seconds. Stir in spice mix and tomato purée, combining well. Add the chicken and let brown, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes.

5. Pour in 4 cups of water. Bring to a rapid simmer for 10 minutes. Add the tamarind and continue simmering until the liquid has reduced by half and has a thick, saucy consistency (about 40 minutes).

On a busy week, chefs might crack open more than 7,000 eggs to feed the omeletobsessed clientele. That’s a lot of yolk for hungry folks!

FOOD u For a poached eggy twist on the popular salad, try the Caprese Benedict with tomato, mozzarella, arugula, hollandaise sauce and pesto basil drizzle on a toasted English muffin.

DR. PETER LEE is a renowned plastic surgeon and also the Founder and CEO of Wave Plastic Surgery Center, the largest practice of its kind in the nation. Wave took Southern California with such success that a new facility recently opened in San Francisco, with even more on the horizon. Dr. Lee uses his business to help bring more options to more people, paying special attention to individualized patient care. It’s safe to say that your beauty is in good hands with Dr. Lee and the team of doctors at Wave!

At the age of 14, Dr. Lee began attending a university for a special physics program, but before long, he decided that he wanted to work with something more tangible. Dr. Lee then turned his focus to medical school, in an effort to make a difference in peoples’ lives. He says, “[Plastic surgery] is not just medicine and science, but art and creativity as well—it all goes hand in hand.” Now, Dr. Lee is an award-winning plastic surgeon with international acclaim. He also travels to teach microsurgery, with an emphasis on minimal incision. Dr. Lee has a unique perspective on plastic surgery that rebuffs the pervasive vanity stereotype of the industry. He (and Wave, by extension) believes that cosmetic surgeries are primarily about increasing a patient’s quality of life. Having the ability to fix your flaws with surgery allows people to gain confidence and shed whatever insecurities they carry. According to Dr. Lee’s personal philosophy, “Aesthetic treatments are a cure for a lot of people who aren’t as confident, and when you do something to make yourself look better, it changes who you are.” 104 LOCALE MAGAZINE

“Wave covers all spectrums, and we offer the most realistic, honest expectations.” —DR. PETER LEE

ONWARD AND UPWARD • Wave has set its sights on expansion and plans to open up locations in the South and East Bay—after that, the company is off to take on the Big Apple! SPEC-TACULAR SOLUTIONS • At Wave Plastic Surgery Center, there’s a large focus on providing care for Asian-predominant surgeries like the double eyelid procedure. Dr. Lee saw a need for this specialization in the industry.

While Dr. Lee has worked with sick patients in the past and has even performed reconstructive surgery for people suffering from cancer, he enjoys his current occupation because, “In the cosmetic realm, you’re not sick—you’re healthy. You’re looking for improvement.” Dr. Lee sees the curative function of plastic surgery in his work, which he believes is often overlooked since the changes that occur appear only on the outside. What the common observer cannot see in cosmetic surgery patients are changes to their everyday happiness. “The gratification of increasing a patient’s quality of life is what I enjoy,” Dr. Lee explains. Whether you want to lose a few extra pounds or that wonky family nose you inherited, it’s important to never let the small things keep you from going out and enjoying life. As Dr. Lee puts it, “When we stop doing things is when we get older.” Dr. Lee’s spirit of improving a patient’s quality of life through cosmetic surgery translates over to the company model as well. Wave Plastic Surgery Center recognizes the importance of well-informed and singularized cosmetic surgery care, from the first interview to the last checkup. “We invest heavily in a variety of options,” explains

LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS • Wave Plastic Surgery Center has locations in Los Angeles, Irvine, Rowland Heights, Arcadia and San Francisco. Pop by for a 30-minute consultation with an expert plastic surgeon if you think cosmetic surgery might help improve your quality of life.

“[Plastic surgery] is not just medicine and science, but art and creativity as well—it all goes hand in hand.” —DR. PETER LEE

Dr. Lee, which is why Wave Plastic Surgery Center is set up to allow for specifically designed individual care, the likes of which are rare in cosmetic surgery clinics. Since Wave is so much larger than other plastic surgery companies, they can offer a much wider selection of procedures which, in turn, gives patients a chance to sit down and decide on the absolute best path for their foray into cosmetic alterations. “Something we stress [at Wave] is to feel out and get an answer from the patient,” he says. Dr. Lee and the doctors at Wave Plastic Surgery Center are aiming to do more with their skills than just alter a patient’s physical appearance— they want to empower people by giving them the control to change parts of themselves that hold them back in life. Wave has doctors from different backgrounds with varying realms of experience, but all of them are there for one reason: to help their patients experience life exactly the way they want to experience it. Dr. Lee’s humanistic approach to cosmetic surgery, as well as his success in his field, has opened a platform where anyone has the power to change anything they don’t like about themselves. “Wave covers all spectrums,” says Dr. Lee, “and we offer the most realistic, honest expectations.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 105

Define Zense • Gundry came up with the word “Zense” one night over a glass of wine while brainstorming a name for her store with her husband. In her words, it’s the “Eastern practice of integrating the five senses to achieve ultimate harmony and fulfillment.”

Roughly twelve years ago, Perko came to her mother and said, “I would love to work at Zense!” Surprised and delighted, Gundry brought her daughter to the store—not to work, but to observe. “I wanted her to learn the trade. I told her, ‘Sit on this bench and absorb everything about the business,’” Gundry remembers.

What makes Zense a unique boutique? That depends on who you ask. “You created it,” Melissa Perko nods to her mother. “Yes, but you took over,” Penny Gundry is quick to reply. The mother-daughter duo, business partners and owners of the pillar jewelry and accessory shop on El Paseo in Palm Desert share an inherited passion for fashion and design that didn’t skip a generation. Gundry handles much of the creative merchandise, while daughter Perko oversees the dayto-day tasks of managing the store. Together, they operate one of El Paseo’s most distinctive treasure troves—a place where community meets an ever-changing gallery of collective adornment.

W

112 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Even with her mom as her boss, Perko didn’t receive special treatment. She sat on that bench, watched her mother’s fluid interaction with shoppers and learned valuable customer service skills. “The hospitality my mother shows...she’s just so inviting to people. It really is what makes her a great success,” Perko says. After about three months of bench time, Gundry gave Perko her first shot at working the showroom floor. Little by little, Perko took on more responsibility. Gundry says Zense has “evolved into this wonderful business that Perko now manages and controls.”

Girl Power • Established in 2001, Zense has the prestige of being one of the most sustainable women-owned businesses on El Paseo, the famed Palm Desert street, for nearly two decades.

“At Zense, you dress yourself in beautiful, wearable art. At Zense Home, you dress up your home with beautiful, imaginative objects.” — M E L I SS A P E R KO

After years of decorating homes for clients, Gundry craved more creative satisfaction than choosing shades of textured white wallpaper. Driving down El Paseo one day, she noticed a “For Lease” sign in the window of a quaint storefront; it was then that inspiration struck. She had the design chops but knew very little about retail. Determined to make her dream come true, she made the leap from interior decorator to entrepreneur. “I stuck my head in and thought it was perfect. It was just four walls, but I knew I could create a magical space here,” Gundry says—and enchanting it is. On the walls of Zense, you’ll find wearable art in the form of statement jewelry, designer handbags and eclectic accessories in shades of gray, hues of blue and glimmers of green. Featured pieces are commissioned by Gundry from European artists and designers from her overseas excursions during the desert’s offseason. Now, as an equal business partner, Perko joined her mother on a trip to France and Italy last summer to lend her expertise and design eye in an effort to help stock the shelves with new merchandise that is an amalgam of both their styles.

A Beautiful Balance • Perko says her mother is more “outside-the-box,” while Gundry says Perko takes a more “conservative” design approach, creating a unique mesh of treasures in their overall Zense collection.

“We travel to Europe looking for our inspirations,” Gundry says. “Sometimes, we’re on the same page, and we’ll gravitate towards the same designers that we see. Then there are other times Melissa will say, ‘Oh, this is fabulous!’ and I’ll disagree. And she’ll say, ‘Trust me, this will sell.’”

“Melissa tones down my craziness, so it balances pretty well.” — P E N N Y G U N D RY

“And it does!” Perko points out. Mother and daughter each have their own interesting insight on the other’s design style. Perko labels her mom as more edgy and “outside-the-box,” mixing materials like meshy metals, rubber and resin, while Gundry says her daughter takes a more “conservative” approach, juxtaposed with bold pops of color. “Melissa tones down my craziness, so it balances pretty well,” Gundry says. “It just works,” Perko adds. While they differ somewhat on design styles, Gundry and Perko do share a few things in common. Outside of Zense, they spend time shopping (of course!). “We love fashion; we love shopping,” Perko says. They also love dogs. Gundry is the owner of four pooches, including Miss Pearl, an older Labradoodle and retired Zense shop dog. That role is now assumed by Perko’s Shih-poo puppy, Buddy, who comes to work with her every day and greets customers. The future of the Zense franchise continues to look bright, as Perko and husband Ray opened Zense Home in 2018. Located next door, the fun and colorful home accessory shop is an extension of the Zense empire, which features unique accent pieces from rainbow-splattered ceramic frogs to rubbery glass-like vases. “At Zense, you dress yourself in beautiful, wearable art. At Zense Home, you dress up your home with beautiful, imaginative objects,” Perko explains. Both boutiques have an alluring impact on El Paseo that attracts shoppers from around the globe to the ritzy desert shopping district. “People here travel the world, and they get what we’ve got going on here at Zense,” Gundry explains. With her daughter by her side, there is no doubt both Zense stores will continue to thrive. LOCALE MAGAZINE 113

“We really want to focus and work hard on drawing younger people into the fold—explaining to them how important it is to be charitable and philanthropic.”

To some of the general public, picking up groceries or stopping for take-out on the way home from work may seem ordinary. So much so that we often forget to acknowledge the great sum of charitable organizations who work year-round to bring these commodities to those less able.

—MARK ANTON

How to Help • AAP is always looking for volunteers or donors. Anyone can apply for either via their website, www.aidsassistance. org/volunteer

For nearly 30 years, the AAP – Food Samaritans organization has approached the hunger crisis among low-income people living with HIV/AIDS with integrity, bringing year-round meals and food supplies to Coachella Valley residents who would otherwise struggle or barely get by. A full decade after the initial 1981 reports of the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic, AAP sought to fix a problem that had gone unattended for far too long.

Giving Back • Outside of Evening Under the Stars, AAP hosts several other charity events throughout the year, ranging from a Fourth of July benefit to fundraising events at the illustrious O’Donnell house in Downtown Palm Springs, which are responsible for a considerable portion of their annual donations.

In 1991, the founding year of AAP, the federal compensation for patients too ill with HIV/ AIDS to work standard jobs was nearly non-existent. AIDS was the leading cause of death among men aged 25-44, and the toll continued to increase in numbers for men, women and children for years after. To say there was a dire need for charitable intervention is an understatement. When Gloria Greene, owner of Gloria’s Restaurant in North Palm Springs, began to notice the number of people living with HIV/AIDS who were knocking on her restaurant door and asking for leftover food increased dramatically, she took action. After some thought, in-depth conversations and planning with her friends, Jeannette Rockefeller and Joanna Jakway, AAP was born.

W

Providing nutritional support for over 2,500 recipients since its inception, AAP has since become the driving force in feeding the low-income population of the Coachella Valley living with HIV/ AIDS and other chronic illnesses—most recipients being those who otherwise may not have had access to fresh food or toiletries while battling their health complications. At the forefront of the organization, CEO Mark Anton has overseen charity duties for the past 18 years. Throughout his time with AAP, Anton has slowly worked his way from board member to chairman, and eventually to executive director.

Thirty and Thriving • Over the past 30 years, AAP – Food Samaritans has helped over 2,500 low-income Coachella Valley locals living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses who are incapable of working a standard job due to their health.

“A dear friend of mine asked if I would like to be a board member for AAP. I immediately said yes because my ex-partner had just passed away from HIV-related complications, so it really resonated with me… I thought, ‘If I could do something to help just one person, it would all be worth it,’” Anton explains. “So I became a board member, and it just kind of snowballed from there—18 years later, I’m still here.” The standard recipient of an AAP donation is granted a food voucher worth $150 per month to cover basic expenses they otherwise may not have been able to afford. The company has since expanded its coverage to assist those unable to work

due to other illnesses besides HIV/AIDS. As of 2020, AAP is equipped to serve as many as 500 Coachella Valley clients per month. “We’ve provided a source of food and other necessary toiletries to some of our recipients for nearly 30 years. Unfortunately, while some of our beloved recipients have since passed away, we also offer our services to many younger people in the Coachella Valley who are sick or otherwise unable to feed themselves,” explains Anton. Without the help of federal or state aid, AAP relies on the generosity of the community, raising 100% of all income from private donations and fundraising events. Perhaps their largest and most popular event, the annual Evening Under the Stars gala, which is already booked for May 2 of this year on the O’Donnell golf course in Palm Springs, gives the donation-capable public a glimpse into what the charity is all about while raising funds to continue their work. “We really want to focus and work hard on drawing younger people into the fold—explaining to them how important it is to be charitable and philanthropic. That’s our biggest goal outside of feeding those in need. We never want to turn away any clients that may need our help,” says Anton, regarding the goals of AAP. “Most of us are fortunate enough in one way or another, so it’s important that we help.” Meeting those goals is exactly what Anton and the AAP board members and volunteers have accomplished through the organization’s mission and efforts. “I’ve always thought of myself as a compassionate person, but it’s easy to unfairly judge people,” Anton remarks. “Every day, I learn how important it is to be understanding of people and their situations. That’s what I’ve learned most.”

Each year, Empire Polo Club hosts hundreds of thousands of polo spectators, concert-goers and event attendees. The world-renowned grounds are home to arguably the area’s most popular annual music event, Coachella, and it’s country counterpart, Stagecoach. Starting in January, the immaculate fields come to life with polo matches—complete with the famous Pretty Woman champagne divot stomp. But there is so much more to Empire Polo Club than polo and concerts; within the walls lie some of the most beautiful spaces that are brimming with rich Coachella Valley history.

Year-Round Extravaganzas • Beyond the entertainment, you can find a bustling agricultural business at Empire Polo Fields, yielding bermudagrass, lemons and famous Coachella Valley dates. During the winter season, equestrian activities are in full swing with breeding and training; some horses even hit the field for polo matches in January. Expanding the Empire • Set to unveil in 2020, Empire’s Grand Oasis, a new venue in Thermal, will feature Empire’s signature

polo fields as well as waterfalls, tiki bars and a sprawling estate home. The grounds hosted the first-ever 4xFAR music festival in January, featuring outdoor activities and live performances. Pretty as a Painting • Renovated in 2015, Medjhool Lake, one of the most scenic areas at Empire Polo Club, was inspired by paintings of Monet’s gardens in Giverny, France. This 10-acre setting features statues, Japanese footbridges and stone walkways, all reminiscent of Monet’s works. A charming tiki hut is a favorite lakeside spot. Jamming out Since 1993 • Most think Coachella was the first music event at Empire, but Pearl Jam first graced the stage in 1993, playing to nearly 25,000 fans. This concert is said to have blazed the trail for Coachella, which debuted in 1999. Mayor Lupe Ramos Amith says, “Empire Polo Club has placed Indio on the International map... as the ‘City of Festivals.’”

Troy Kudlac, Founder and Broker of KUD Properties

History in the Making KUD PROPERTIES EXPANDS WITH A NEW OFFICE SPACE, KEEPING PALM DESERT BEAUTIFUL WRITTEN BY: REX LEE SEARCEY • PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NATHAN COX

A prominent player in Coachella Valley real estate and architecture, Troy Kudlac and his company, KUD Properties, have a special passion for midcentury modern design. They began remodeling and repositioning blighted midcentury modern houses in the Coachella Valley in 2010. Their most inspired and well-received project has been the construction of eight new Desert Eichler houses (using original plans from renowned modernist Joseph Eichler) in Palm Springs.

A

“Now that we’ve been in the space for a few months, it feels like home and we can’t remember anything different.” —Troy Kudlac

As KUD Properties was growing out of their small business space, Kudlac and his wife Amy were looking for a new, larger space to lease. He had been driving past a particular building in Palm Desert for years; he liked the look and was very intrigued by it. When he discovered that it was up for sale, he was very interested. Though KUD had no plans to buy at the time, it had always

been a long-term goal. After evaluating the opportunity, they made an offer to buy the building, and it was accepted. With a keen eye for midcentury modern architecture—developed through years of experience—Kudlac felt “there was something there,” so he began to investigate the building’s history. Kudlac says he was “REALLY excited” to discover that it was designed by Walter S. White, an eminent modernist architect and industrial designer who worked in the Coachella Valley in the 1950s. In terms of the company’s focus, he says the building was “right up [their] alley.” Having been originally built for Valley Lumber, subsequently occupied by Maytag and then a preschool, the building had been altered over the years. Kudlac decided to restore it to its original design. After three months of work, KUD was able to move in this past July. “Now that we’ve been in the space for a few months, it feels like home, and we can’t remember anything different,” Kudlac explains. “Modern design and architecture will always be relevant.”

Well-Aquainted • KUD Properties has 25 years of real estate experience in the Coachella Valley. Bringin’ in the Big Bucks • As an agency, KUD sold $200 MM since 2016. More to Come • There are currently 18 cutting-edge architectural homes built or underway.

RESIDENCE IN RETROGRADE THE ELVIS HONEYMOON HIDEAWAY THROWS IT BACK TO THE PINNACLE OF MIDCENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE

WRITTEN BY: DIEGO E. GAXIOLA PHOTOGRAPHED BY: KENNETH ALEXANDER SCOTT & PROVIDED BY: BENNION DEVILLE HOMES

It isn’t too often that a property is listed for sale with as much history as 1350 Ladera Circle, located a few blocks from North Palm Canyon Drive. The lot is situated in the prestigious community of Vista Las Palmas, known for decades to attract the rich and famous. Originally built for esteemed Palm Springs developer Robert Alexander and his family in the early ’60s, the estate serves as a pristine example of quintessential elements distinct to midcentury modern design. In addition, two separate parcels bordering 1350 Ladera Circle are for sale, allowing buyers the rare opportunity to own the entire cul-de-sac.

“The House of Tomorrow”... powerfully exemplifies the key components of midcentury modern architecture.

Bennion Deville Homes agent Scott Histed is responsible for representing the property and is eager to showcase this historic estate. The home was designed by famed Palm Springs architect William Krisel, who was responsible for the development of nearly 2,000 residences in the Greater Palm Springs area. The estate was originally built for Robert and Helene Alexander and gained notoriety after being featured in multiple 1960s publications, dubbing the home “The House of Tomorrow.” The residence gained even more popularity after Elvis and Priscilla Presley spent their honeymoon at the home in 1966. Today, the home is still referred to as the “Elvis Presley Honeymoon Hideaway” and has been featured in Architectural Digest, Time Magazine and The Travel Channel.

Circle’s architectural design was utilized as inspiration during the development of two “Upstairs Suites” at Elvis Presley’s Graceland Mansion.

If you’re traveling southbound on North Palm Canyon Drive, you’ll make a quick right onto Via Las Palmas, the main drive leading into the renowned Vista Las Palmas neighborhood. Upon passing the Old Las Palmas main entrance sign, you’re welcomed with a seemingly infinite amount of palm trees and pristine gated residences lining either side of the street. While discussing the characteristics of the Vista Las Palmas neighborhood, Histed explains, “It’s ranked the most expensive price per square foot in all of Palm Springs.” Continuing on your journey down Via Las Palmas, you will ultimately reach the serene Ladera Circle cul-de-sac. “The House of Tomorrow” stands out in the center and powerfully exemplifies the key components of midcentury modern architecture.

The distinctive roof reigns over the residence’s unique floorplan, evoking a sense of curiosity to those admiring the home. Histed points out the significance of the butterfly-shaped roof by stating, “Alexander was known for incorporating butterfly roofs in his developments.” From the street, circle-shaped stairs zigzag up the front yard, guiding you towards the front gate. The stairs themselves are part of an elaborate stone waterfall feature, allowing one to admire the gently flowing water as they walk. Entering through the front gate, you are met with a secluded courtyard that’s filled with a variety of vibrant plants and shady trees. The front of the home, seen from the courtyard, features a stone facade and floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing you a glimpse into the lively interior of the home. At night, the lights of the interior fill the courtyard with warm light, welcoming all who enter the grounds of the estate. Once you enter through the grand main entrance, you are met with calming tones of ivory on the walls and similarcolored Terrazzo flooring. To the left of the front entrance is one of the most magnificent interior spaces of the estate, the central living and dining room. A stone wall frames the circular living space, and floor-to-ceiling windows provide the space with an abundance of natural light. A beige-colored custom sectional lines the interior stone wall, providing ample space to entertain or simply enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning. In the middle of the living room is a circular fireplace, precisely marking the center of the space. The whitepaneled fireplace hangs from the ceiling, allowing guests sitting in both the living and dining room areas to enjoy the view. Slightly

elevated above the living room is a lightfilled dining area where the floor-to-ceiling window trend continues, offering guests an uninterrupted view of the glistening backyard pool and lounge area. The sliding glass doors found in the living room lead out to the relaxing backyard. A pentagon-shaped pool can clearly be seen when entering the patio area with the San Jacinto Mountains peeking out just above the property’s treeline. A variety of mature trees provide the backyard with shade from the hot desert sun. However, grass can be found in case you and some house guests were looking for an ideal place to get your tan on. Once entering back inside through the sliding doors, you can quickly make your way to the kitchen. The kitchen has a simple, yet unforgettable design to it— all-white custom cabinetry and a circular center island. Similar to the fireplace found in the living room, the kitchen’s range hangs from the ceiling, which is another element often found in midcentury modern design. Though the estate has five bedrooms, the most spectacular of private rooms is the master bedroom suite. The bedroom features a picturesque view of the exterior desert thanks to the four windows adorning the bedroom wall. The master bath features a tranquil bathtub and a black-and-whitetiled bathroom floor. An opportunity to own a property as unique and historic as “The House of Tomorrow” is an event rarely seen in Palm Springs. Whether you’re looking for a new address to call home or an amazing investment opportunity, one thing is certain: 1350 Ladera Circle is a property fit for “The King” or queen! LOCALE MAGAZINE 141

Crazy Little Thing Called Mod Revivals Furnishings and a Dreamy Airbnb Are a Match Made in Heaven WRITTEN BY: PATRICIA KEMP • PHOTOGRAPHED BY: RACHEL HOOPS

Palm Springs

Expert : Steven Henke Credentials: Director of Community Development, Revivals Step 1

• “Don’t be afraid of pieces that need a little work. Look for resale treasures at thrift shops and reupholster with new fabrics of colors, patterns and textures authentic to your style.”

Step 2

• “Go high and low. Splurge on a high-end item like a sofa that defines your space, and then surround it with inexpensive pieces, such as graphic throw pillows.”

Step 3

“Don’t be afraid of pieces that need a little work…”

• “The 1960s were all about going natural. Unstained woods are a huge part of the midcentury modern design, so look for pieces that show off clean lines of teak, walnut and rosewood grain.”

Step 4

• “Keep a running list of room and furniture dimensions on your phone. You never know when you’ll find the perfect furniture piece at an estate sale.”

Step 5

• “Shop what’s new to you. Revivals is a great source to find your personal ‘mixed-century vibe.’ Combine new pieces with thrift store finds from various decades. The end result will feel more personal. One of our customers took four peg legs from a 1950s sofa and put them on a new couch for a look that felt midcentury in a very modern way.”

Step 6

• “Be neutral like Switzerland. Midcentury designers loved earth tones like brown, rust and green with bright accent colors of red, blue and yellow.”

Step 7

• “Decorate on your timeline. Vintage hunting requires patience. The best home collections are built over time from different places like flea markets.”

The midcentury was all about shaking things up. Out with your mother’s matchy-matchy bedroom set. Primary pops of color and geometric patterns were in. Designers were also mixing materials like plywood, metal and glass for a sleek minimalist style. The Dream Home is a stunning Palm Springs Airbnb vacation pad (outfitted with new and used items from Revivals) that was designed to feel like you stepped into a time warp back into the 1960s. Steven Henke, the resale shop’s director of community development, offers tips on how to create your own sweet mod home. “You’re not living on the set of ‘Mad Men;’ it’s your place, so add your personality,” Henke says. 142 LOCALE MAGAZINE
