This Desert Dweller is Giving Us All the Home Decor Envy ®
EDITOR'S NOTE I have a black-and-white print in my home that reads, “Work hard so you can shop harder.” It’s one of my many life mottos; it pays proper homage to my shop first, ask later lifestyle. When I was little, I used to think my grandma’s home was the mall because we’d go shopping so much. “This is where GiGi lives!” I’d say walking through the mall’s automatic doors. Now, that I’m attempting to ‘adult,’ I’d say not much has changed. I own too many shoes and my romper collection is getting out of hand. For this Shoppe issue, we brought you our favorite trends from back in the day in Year We Go (pg. 51), a group of men with some serious style (pg. 31) and a fashion spread that details why it takes us women so long to get ready (spoiler alert, it’s because we’re sipping Lillet Rosé) (pg. 67).
We also met up with our Shoppe Profile, Janelle, where ‘all roads’ lead to handcrafted fashion (pg. 62) and the blogger of Cosmic American who takes us on a stylish tour of all our favorite spots in Joshua Tree (pg. 75); they’re super cool, trust me. We are totally fangirling over our cover star, Ross Mathews, and his contagious smile. We’re used to seeing him on live TV, and our Los Angeles Editor Charlotte did a really great job bringing his story to life. Flip to see how we captured his out-of-the-box personality and exactly how much he loves Palm Springs (and the Seattle Seahawks?) (pg. 42). P.S. We have a new Greater Palm Springs Editor, Marissa! Drop a nice note in her inbox and say hello!

Set atop the only rooftop pool scene in the Greater Palm Springs area, the surrounding views and mountainscapes at the Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs were presented exactly how they should be; from high above the hubbub and with a quiet atmosphere that forces you to slow your roll and take a deep breath— maybe the first real one you have taken in a long time.
S
Ross Mathews, the TV personality, podcast pro, author and more, was happy to spend some time in the presummer sun as we snapped shot after shot trying to capture a personality that truly cannot be contained in one image. The atmosphere was playful and full of joy, just like Mathews as he laughed and equally made us giggle through the entire process. Photographer Andrea Domjan said, “I very much enjoyed working with Ross; he is such a sweet and very funny guy. He is a natural in front of the camera so it was very easy for me to take portraits of him that reflect his personality. For most of the shots I used one studio light to compensate the bright Palm Springs sun.” Stylist Neil Cohen, who was the mix master on set, used pieces that best showed off Mathews’ sense of style with some added flair, adding, “Working with Ross was as fun as you’d think it would be!” As the shoot wrapped, Mathews didn’t skip a beat. He was off to enjoy some fun in the sun with friends nearby, while the crew parted ways ready to take on the traffic home with a smile on their faces. Anyone who has met Mathews knows he has this effect on people, and I was grateful my commute was filled with a lot more positivity and a bit less yelling at the guy who cut me off.

I’m like a gay cartoon version of a human being, so it was a little different,” he said. But even Ross can’t pigeonhole his official title. “My career is a little unorthodox. What am I? Am I a TV host? Am I a comedian? Am I an author?” he asked. “I want to be a little bit of all of it. I don't think that you have to be in a box. I'd love to do something unexpected next. Is it a cooking show? A game show? Why is there a box for me? I’m not going to put myself in one, so we’ll see what happens!”
O
One project after another, the man is relentless in his ability to keep up with demand. He attributes his stamina to his involvement in theater, debate and journalism back in the day.
“There were certain things growing up that really taught me work ethic more than confidence. I mean, I was stupidly confident,” he said with a laugh. “I never worried about getting on stage in front of people, but what theater and debate and journalism taught me was a strong work ethic. I remember realizing that if you rehearse and you practice and you put in the work, you get the reward. I [thought] ‘Oh that's how it works.’ I have called upon those skills in my life far more than I've called upon geometry or algebra.” In other words, Ross was destined to be in front of an audience rather than behind a desk, nine to five. In discussing Ross’ impressive resume, he feels he shines brightest under the pressure of being in realtime. “My favorite thing is doing live television,” he explained. “I’m not good at ‘take two.’ I'm not good at faking it and that’s why I don't do tours or stand up because I don't like saying the same joke over and over again. I like the energy of live. I like embracing the mistakes.” He has an innate capacity for cleverness and quick-wittedness that brings out the best in people, be it with celebrities or the average Joe. It is difficult not to open up to Ross as though you have been friends for years. There are no false pretenses, no angles and no shrewdness. He described his sense of humor as harmless. “There's never a victim at the end of my joke, and that's by design because I've been the butt of people’s jokes before and it's just mean. What if I made
a joke about somebody and their grandma saw it? I wanna make sure grandma is gonna be okay,” he joked with sincerity. Having seen that dark side of the industry, Ross never lets it burden his spirit. “I just struggle,” he sighed. “I just try, you know? It's tough. It’s long hours. It’s a lot, and you try to balance it all and you are only as good as your last project. You've just gotta be in the fight. I don't know how people get a big head in Hollywood because all you are is made humble every day. You're told ‘no’ every day. You're told you're too fat, you're too thin, you're not ‘this’ or ‘that’ enough. I don't know how people get big egos, but they do!” Dealing with those egos has become second nature to him. “I understand celebrities because I've been interviewing them now for almost 20 years,” he said, describing his time on “Celebrity Big Brother” as an example of how to tiptoe around difficult personalities. “That's why I did so well [on the show] because I knew how to deal with these people. You have to compliment them, you have to listen, you have to think they have great ideas.” And no matter what might be going on in Ross’ brain, you would never know if he has any jitters or fears being in front of the camera or in the face of big names in Tinseltown. “I don't get nervous; I get excited. If I'm nervous, it's for something that's important for others, like when I hosted the GLAAD awards,” an awards show that honors multiple media branches and their representation of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, of which he has hosted six times. “That makes me nervous because I want to do right for them. I don't get nervous for myself because if I bomb I’m like ‘Okay, great,’ I go home, who cares. But I want it to be good for the people.”

Speaking to his involvement in the LGBTQIA+ community, Ross has been an integral part of the shift in attitudes and acceptance in his many years on America’s small-screens. “From the first day on Leno I knew that that was happening,” he said, referring to his initial start on the show in 2001. “Think about how different TV was then. I knew the audience was going to laugh at me, so I had to make them laugh with me by the end. I had to never apologize about who I was and I remember thinking on that first day, ‘Oh my God, some kid somewhere is watching this and seeing this.’ Now we're at a point where I was just on CBS—one of the most mainstream networks—for ‘Celebrity Big Brother,’ and America voted me as their favorite. So, think how far we’ve come. It's amazing,” he said with a smile and that lovable twinkle in his eye.
S
He is no stranger to the plight of those feeling trapped in the expectations of traditional sexual orientations. “I see my role as being what I didn't have growing up as a kid, which is someone who is on national TV with a national platform being unapologetically themselves and telling me at home that I was fine just the way I was,” he said, “I remember growing up and looking at TV, looking out my window in my little farm town and not knowing what a grown up gay person looked like. Imagine being that kid and thinking ‘Can I be a grown up? What could my life be like? Will I be alone? Will I have to keep a secret my whole life?” Regardless of how far we have come, kids are still burdened with stigmas and fear. Ross wants them to listen up: “I understand if you look around and you look out the window and you feel like there’s nobody like you, but I want you to know that you just have to go a couple neighborhoods away and there are communities of people who won't just tolerate you, but instead they'll celebrate you.”
The celebration continues as Ross’ future shows no signs of losing its current speed. Fan favorite “RuPaul’s Drag Race” is in its 10th season, and viewers can’t get enough of all the sass and shenanigans. “Drag Race is a phenomenon. I’m so proud to be on that show. I think it’s the best show on TV,” Ross said as he straightened up in his seat, looking tall, tanned and fabulous. Oh, and that tan? You can thank the Palm Springs sunshine for that. Ross’ love for the desert runs deep, as he gushes about the first time he came to Palm Springs: “I thought, ‘This is home,’ so I did everything I could to get a house here, and now it’s been seven years and I am here every single second I’m not working [in LA].” The people made a big impression on him, too: “Everyone here is happy because they're either on vacation or they're old and gay and fabulous, or they're people who like all of that stuff. It's rare that you bump into someone in a crappy mood in Palm Springs.” As the man about town, Ross loves maintaining the 50-pound weight loss he achieved two years ago by going on three-mile walks every day around the city: “I’m like Belle in Beauty and the Beast; I say, ‘good morning, good day, bonjour’ to all the neighbors.” He is also a huge fan of trivia at Toucans every Friday, going to QUADZ for show tunes on Friday and Saturday nights and heading over to Shanghai Reds for the fish tacos. “Grilled, not fried, because look at my body,” he boasted as he pointed to his abs. When asked if he plans on eventually being a full-time desert dweller, he answered with an emphatic “Yes. Yes!” Until then, don’t hesitate to say “hello” if you spot him strolling down Palm Canyon Drive or lounging on a floatie by the pool with a cocktail in hand. In the meantime, we will watch as he continues to steal our hearts with his sincerity and social prowess.

They say fashion evolves in cycles; everything old is new again, and what goes around, comes back around. In 2018, many of the “best ofs” from the past decades are making an appearance once again, but with a fresh new spin that’s relevant and now. With the bright colors of the ‘70s, edginess of the ‘80s, everything plaid from the ‘90s and let us not forget the early 2000s with pops of bubblegum colors and bare midriffs à la Britney Spears. Today’s twist on decade couture will give you life this fashion season, and we’ve got the 411 on how to put these looks together.

Concealed behind a small storefront window on a side street in Yucca Valley sits textile and ceramic artist Janelle Pietrzak and her partner/welder Robert Dougherty’s “stordio,” All Roads. Named after the relationship between the co-owners, their motto is, “No regrets, everything leads you to who you are now. All roads led us to each other.” If you are there on a day when the studio is open, you’ll find Janelle at one of her many looms creating beautiful and intricately designed cloth and tapestry. On the other side of the glass, you’ll find an array of yarns, weavings, t-shirts and more.

Janelle describes herself as, “a strong, independent woman.” She started down her creative road at the Virginia Commonwealth University where she majored in fashion design, before working in New York as a design assistant, then in Philadelphia where she sourced fabric at Anthropologie. Eventually, she made her way to Los Angeles, where her job in the fashion industry demanded a lot of creative energy. “My job left me no time for my own creative pursuits. That is when I started weaving. After 11 months of weaving, I quit my job to weave full time,” she said. But this creative didn’t sit still for long. Just a few years ago, Janelle started taking ceramic classes as another creative outlet, which she now combines with many of her textiles. In July of 2017, Janelle and Robert made the move out to Yucca Valley, and with the cost of living being much less, they’re able to have plenty of space to create both physically and mentally. “In Los Angeles my studio was in my house and I didn’t want [it there]—I wanted to work in a shop-like, public space. In Los Angeles, I could never afford a storefront like we have here.” Not only did they meet other
creatives in their new home, but Janelle also found inspiration in the landscape, plants, colors and textures of the desert. “In Yucca Valley, we can live the dream life,” she explains. All Roads is a creative collective; not only does the studio display the work of Janelle and Robert, but also the artwork of their creative friends. “Either we made it or it was made by someone we know,” she said. In fact, the happy face and peace sign t-shirts sold in the studio were designed by Robert’s 12-year-old daughter, Ava. The “stordio” also donates $5 from the sale of every shirt to Inner-City Arts in Los Angeles, a nonprofit that offers arts education to children in the heart of Skid Row. As for the future of All Roads, Janelle explained, “I don’t even know where I will be in 10 months. I have goals, but so much happens by chance.” As for now, Janelle will continue to be inspired by the landscape and colors that change through the seasons, informing her design and texture of her textiles. “Textiles connect people culturally. It is the oldest craft in the world. The process has not changed in centuries. It is like a common language.” And All Roads’ language is one we are ready to learn. LOCALE MAGAZINE 65

MOON WIND TRADING COMPANY
Hi, I’m Geneva and I’m a desert rat. My family and I traded the modern conveniences of our bright, vibrant San Diego neighborhood to move to the unincorporated community of Joshua Tree a little more than two years ago and we haven’t looked back since. Some people might think Joshua Tree is in the middle of nowhere, but they’d be surprised how hip this town actually is. Since the area is home to so many creatives, we have got some seriously great shops to check out. Much like the area itself, they run the gamut from super cool to super quirky in the best possible way! 76 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Native Knowledge • Colony Palms Hotel is pup friendly and welcomes all dogs.
All good chefs have incredible cooking abilities, but only great chefs have courage; courage to turn a list of ingredients into crowd-pleasing menus and transform produce into vibrant works of edible art. As Executive Chef Nick Tall nestles into his second year at the Purple Palm restaurant in the historic Colony Palms Hotel, he puts it all on the line as he takes his loyal patrons deep into a culinary rabbit hole and introduces them to a world full of gastronomic enchantment.

Early Start • Chef Tall began working in the restaurant industry at the age of 15. Home Away From Home • The Palm D’Or was Frank Sinatra’s parttime home.
For decades the magic of Palm Springs has captivated the likes of those seeking to escape the daily routines of a busy life. The history embedded into this small, but thrilling desert city is deeply rooted in Hollywood’s glamorous lifestyle that embodied the silver screen’s top performers, singers and even gangsters from the late 1930s. From poolside lounging and martini-drinking afternoons to lively nights at private speakeasies, hotels have been the main attraction, especially the few that have withstood the test of time like the Colony Palms Hotel. Since its opening in 1936 by gangster Al Wertheimer, a member of the infamous Purple Gang, the hotel’s Spanish colonial architecture served as a meeting place for mobsters, and later as a retreat for Frank Sinatra. Fast forward a few different owners, name changes and a major renovation, the Colony Palms Hotel has grown to be a Palm Springs staple and known in particular for its restaurant, the Purple Palm.
“
“IT'S DEFINITELY THE LOCALS THAT ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO US BECAUSE WE WANT TO SEE THEM COME BACK.” —NICK TALL
Under the direction of visionary Chef Tall, the Moroccan-decorated Purple Palm offers a dining experience solely focused on providing a creative, ultra-seasonal menu that is sure to make a loyal patron out of any diner. At first glance, the menu may seem pretty straightforward, but by avoiding the traditional gourmet-fare terminology found on high-end menus, Chef Tall has made his more approachable by using simple wording to describe his dishes. “The menu itself is really stated simply, so when people get the food, they get really surprised,” said Tall. Tall enjoys challenging himself to develop fresh ideas by using key components to create sophisticated tastes for each dish. “I would call the dishes a deceptive simplicity. They seem simple, but when you start to eat them you realize there are many layers. We usually focus on a few ingredients and use them in many different ways,” Tall added. By grilling, puréeing or pickling the same vegetables in one dish, Tall believes the consistency of a few ingredients is the only way to fully experience its taste.
Tall gathers inspiration from both his Floridian roots, where the Latin and Caribbean flavors formed an essential presence for his palate, and the oriental cooking skills he acquired when he was sous chef at Amber, one of Hong Kong’s top Michelin-starred restaurants. This diversified flavor profile is always present in his rotating menu of culinary delights. Although Chef Tall loves making all his dishes, the duck dumplings are one of his favorites. “I love dim sum from my time in Hong Kong. So we always make sure we have some kind of dim sum on the menu,” said Tall. For his savory duck dumplings, Tall uses thinly sliced, roasted shiitake mushrooms and grilled Chinese garlic chives mixed with a rice wine vinegar infused inhouse with Sichuan peppercorns served with a smoked chili oil and garnished with fresh herbs and orange zest. Ultimately, Chef Tall’s biggest influence is his current location in Palm Springs, which is always as local and seasonal as possible. “We really started to make a great reputation with the local people. It's definitely the locals that are very important to us because we want to see them come back,” Tall said. As the Purple Palm’s standing has quickly grown into one of distinction for their constant inventive approaches, Chef Tall aims to stay away from popular trends at all times in his kitchen. “I want to make sure that all of my dishes are unique and original; I don’t ever want to copy a trend. I rather set trends and create my own path instead of finding out what other people are doing because I really want the people that come here to have a unique experience and have something they can’t get anywhere else,” Tall said. As the art of fine dining continues to expand into all corners of this magical desert city, Chef Tall hopes that one day the Purple Palm will have wide recognition as the greatest restaurant in Palm Springs.

BREAKFAST, LUNCH OR DINNER, THIS AVOCADO FLATBREAD WILL BE YOUR NEW GO TO

WRITTEN BY: MARLY BERGERUD PHOTOGRAPHED BY: YASIN CHAUDHRY
LOCALE MAGAZINE 93
The Avocado Flatbread, Chef Wambach’s signature creation, is a way he shares his passion for flavor and it is savored daily by guests as a unique culinary experience. When asked what was behind the creation of the Avocado Flatbread, Wambach said, “I felt there was a need for something other than avocado toast.”
GLOBETROTTER • Before joining the Kimpton family, Executive Chef Wambach trained with many distinguished chefs and brought his knowledge and passion to top-notch restaurants around the globe.
He went on to retrieve all of the ingredients from the kitchen and enthusiastically began to describe his preparation of the dish. He begins with turmeric dough that is made from fresh yeast, turmeric, fine flour and semolina flour, brushed with garlic oil then seasoned with sea salt and placed into the pizza oven for its initial browning.
SWEET CALIFORNIA • The New York native is a fan of Palm Springs. “I love the outdoor culture, the scenery is amazing and Palm Springs is close to major cities, mountains, the ocean, a national forest and so much more.”
Once Wambach removes the toasted flatbread from the oven, he places a few sections of pre-sliced, fanned shapes of avocado on top, adds salt, a few serrano chilis and a special spice mix (coriander seeds, poppy seeds, sesame seeds and hazelnuts) to provide a crunch with delightful flavor. Next, the spice mix is dusted on top of the avocado, which gives the flatbread a toasted background and unique flavors. The chef then described that he layers the two rows of pre-sliced and avocado pieces with julienned radishes on top, adds toasted pumpkin seeds and another layer of spice crunch on the soft dough.
NATIVE KNOWLEDGE • 4 Saints, the Coachella Valley’s only rooftop venue with a panoramic 270-degree view of the valley, offers a variety of different signature cocktails, local brews and a curated wine list all designed to complement Chef Wambach’s contemporary American cuisine.
Then, when you think that must be it, he sprinkles the avocado with a touch of additional extra virgin olive oil and a little micro sorrel. The micro sorrel is a favorite herb. “[It] has a distinct acidity on the flatbread and provides a nice lemon burst in your mouth that has flavor,” he said. He finishes this beautiful dish by cutting the avocado pieces into six pieces and finally serves Juniper Table’s Signature Avocado Flatbread.
An ethereal architectural gem awaits your experience at the Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs where urban enhancements meet epic scenery with transcendent mountain views. One of the locals’ favorite spots is Rowan’s refreshing seventh floor rooftop pool and bar, the hub of the action at Palm Springs’

highest entertainment venue. Here, you may savor a leisurely brunch prepared by Rowan’s Executive Chef Stephen Wambach. Or after work you may find it extremely relaxing to just bask in the brilliant sunsets while enjoying your cocktails before dining at one of the hotel’s two chef-driven restaurants, Juniper Table. The views from the restaurant span across the very active downtown streets of Palm Springs and the panoramic vistas of the majestic San Jacinto mountains.
It’s everything Chef Wambach described it would be; the flatbread was soft and the combination of flavors along with the crunch of the amazing spice mix and ample spread of avocado was scrumptious—a dish you won’t want to share. It only leaves you wanting more. Juniper Table, located on the main floor of the hotel, provides you with Chef Wambach’s inspiration behind his fresh and simply prepared fare served for breakfast, lunch and dinner. “It is rustic Mediterranean inspired with a focus on freshness using vegetable-forward dishes such as white asparagus gazpacho,” he said. His lunch provides interesting salads and a dinner service with lighter bites such as simply prepared fish and vegetables. “I travel far and wide to bring in fresh fish and local vegetables,” Chef Wambach added. For dishes like the delicious Avocado Flatbread, and other tantalizing items on the menu, you just have to come try them for yourself.

Think vodka layered with savory Fino Sherry, stirred with a housemade blend of distinct brines and a hot pepper tincture. Certainly, one to spark conviviality and conversation, this take on the speakeasy classic takes dirty out of the olive jar and into the light.

SMaRT Education Teaches Kids That Robots and Science are Cool
WRITTEN BY: RACHEL VENSAND PHOTOGRAPHED BY: KENNETH ALEXANDER SCOTT
Coachella Valley native Maria Wren is passionate about providing an encouraging space for kids in her community and beyond to explore the wonders of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). As a mom, Wren recognizes that childhood learning is a hands-on exploration and translates this philosophy into the business model for her nonprofit SMaRT Education. Together with co-founder Liberty Naud, Wren founded SMaRT (Science, Math and Robotics Technology) Education in 2010 to provide before and after-school programs, workshops, summer camps, field trips to nearby science destinations, hands-on building projects and more for K-12 students.
“WE LOVED THE WAY THESE COMPETITIONS WERE SO FOCUSED ON LETTING THE KIDS DO THE EXPLORING, AND LETTING THEM ASK AND ANSWER QUESTIONS FOR THEMSELVES.” —MARIA WREN
Wren noticed a lack of these programs for kids back when her son Diego began first grade at Palm Desert’s then newlyformed Ronald Reagan Elementary School. She explains, “There were no extracurricular programs in place, and we were lucky to just have books in the library.” With the growing popularity of their club, Naud and Wren began to realize the need for engaging extracurricular resources that got kids’ noses out of textbooks and into real life scenarios. Wren elaborates, “We loved the way these competitions were so focused on letting the kids do the exploring, and letting them ask
and answer questions for themselves. We really felt that it was a great way of teaching our kids some of these soft skills that we always talk about but are hard to build into a classroom lesson.” A cornerstone of SMaRT Education’s philosophy is to give youths firsthand experiences with potential career paths to which studying STEAM can lead. Wren and Naud provide a pathway for motivated students to learn more about the world around them. Wren comments, “I like to think that some of the trips we take maybe opens somebody’s eyes to something they didn’t even know they loved.”
Winner, Winner • SMaRT Education began as an afterschool competitive robotics club. Well Rounded • While SMaRT Education began in the STEM realm, the nonprofit eventually expanded to embrace STEAM, which honors STEM as an artform. Native Knowledge • Maria Wren starts getting calls about SMaRT Education’s summer camps as early as January, so don’t wait!

DOING MORE TOGETHER DESERT AIDS PROJECT’S CEO TALKS COMMUNITY EFFORTS AND HOW YOU CAN HELP
WRITTEN BY: QUINTAN VALLES PHOTOGRAPHED BY: DEAN MAYO
The Coachella Valley is a vast, beautiful stretch of land filled with a diverse and vibrant population. The people that call the desert their home have a fierce love for this area and those they share it with. However, with a significantly wide disparity in income levels, it is clear that this beloved community is in need of not only people with big hearts but also big dreams, strong minds and hard-working hands to help those who are down on their luck. Coachella Valley needs people like David Brinkman, CEO and President of Desert AIDS Project (DAP), and those that nobly donate their time and effort to be a part of the team at DAP.

Desert AIDS Project is a Federally Qualified Health Center in Palm Springs that has been seeking to help those living with HIV. “DAP was ‘founded in love’ by a group of volunteers in 1984,” explained Brinkman. “We have always been led by a grassroots community in action.” DAP has grown their staff to almost 200 members with volunteer numbers reaching as high as 550! This has allowed DAP to serve over 4,000 clients, some of whom are not HIV positive, as the health center is not limited to treating only individuals living with HIV.
T
“It is, in short, about the long-term health of our entire community,” Brinkman said. DAP is one of the most comprehensive HIV/AIDS service providers in the US. As a health service provider, it is thriving with volunteer hours being logged at more than 76,000 last year. The organization keeps its eye on health trends and has recently broadened its attention to the emerging threat of Hepatitis C in the community. At a time when the number of individuals living with HIV/AIDS is staggering, it is people like those at DAP who give a sense of comfort, hope and importance. DAP also seeks to help those who are unaware that they have been infected with HIV, and launched the Get Tested Coachella Valley program where more than 80,000 residents were tested for HIV and 500 were found to be positive. In this way, DAP is a seriously proactive force in protecting the health and well being of it’s community. It is not just reacting to a recognized threat, but actively seeking potential threats and ensuring that those who would otherwise fall through the cracks and go without treatment are not left behind. If you are feeling like this project is something you would like to be a part of but simply do not have the time to volunteer, you can lend a helping hand by taking a trip to Revivals Stores to do

some shopping. That’s right, you can assist in DAP’s mission while decorating your home with a mixed-century modern aesthetic via new and resale furniture from Revivals Stores. Revivals has reinvented resale by adding a collection of new furniture and accessories while remaining a destination for bargain hunters and anyone seeking unique pieces for their home. With three locations, this exceptional resale store is staffed mostly by volunteers who support the mission of DAP The newly revamped Palm Springs location is also making waves. “We are very excited about our recent Revivals Store renovation in Palm Springs. The added space has allowed us to expand both resale assortments and our collection of new furniture and accessories,” says Brinkman. “One-hundred percent of all profits from Revivals Stores goes to support client services at Desert AIDS Project, but the store is also a community space for our clients who volunteer and shop there.” The store also regularly donates mattresses, home goods and clothing to those in need while supporting a variety of other local nonprofit organizations. In collaboration with designer Christopher Kennedy, Revivals donated the furnishings for the bedrooms of Sanctuary House, a transitional home for LGBTQ youth aging out of the foster care system. The partnership of DAP and Revivals Stores strengthens the mission of ending HIV while providing a great opportunity for concerned individuals to donate their time and gently used clothing or home goods to the cause. Volunteering can begin with just four hours a week and furniture/clothing donations are always needed. “We welcome anyone with an interest in supporting our mission to volunteer at DAP Volunteers are the heart of everything we do,” adds Brinkman. Whether you donate your time to DAP or your clothes to Revivals, supporting this incredible cause is time well spent.
From the Top • For the sixth year in a row, Desert AIDS Project has earned a “Four Star” rating from Charity Navigator putting them in the top five percent of nonprofits rated. Only the Best • Revivals has been voted best furniture store, best resale store, best vintage clothing store and best thrift store by residents of the Coachella Valley.
"
The growth of DAP is not only due to the overwhelming number of volunteers looking to make a difference in their community, but also the hard work and expertise of Brinkman. He joined the team in 2006, and since his arrival the organization has seen growth like never before. It was under his leadership that DAP gained its status as a Federally Qualified Health Center and increased its volume of staff, volunteers, services and budget by 100 percent.
That’s right; you can assist in DAP’s mission while decorating your home with a mixed-century modern aesthetic with furniture from Revivals Stores.

From movies to childhood visits at the zoo, the awe that comes from seeing wild, exotic animals in real life is a feeling most can relate to. If you’ve ever been curious about what goes on behind the scenes at the zoo, or have ever wanted to get your hands on a cuddly fennec fox, Dr. Andrea Goodnight, veterinarian at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens has a story or two to tell. She never has a typical day, but if she did, it would look a little something like this.
108 LOCALE MAGAZINE
“[My favorite part of the day is] the end of the day. Sitting back and thinking about what worked, how I helped the animals, what I am going to do tomorrow. I also like doing surgeries.”
ROOM TO GROW The Living Desert incorporates approximately 1,352 acres.
“I try to see the animals when they don’t need treatment so they do not have an adverse reaction to me and I can get to know them.”
“Zookeepers are on the frontlines. They get to know the animals and will call me if they see a problem. This is a team effort. If a zookeeper comes in with an emergency, we drop everything and care for that animal.”
“[Red flags include] changes in attitude, activity level, not reacting, more picky with food, lying in a corner and drinking more water or less water are the subtle observations. Not so subtle are wounds or blood.”
“I honestly have not picked a favorite here, yet. Of all the animals I have ever worked on, my favorite, hands down, is the California condor.”
“Our exams are a little different. Wild animals are not used to being handled. We anesthetize the bigger animals and teach cooperative training. Cooperative training trains the animals to allow us to put our hands on them. For example, we have a zebra that will open its mouth on command.”
“Shortly after I arrived, an Arabian oryx had dental issues. I worked with an equine dental specialist. We met via email and hashed out a plan to help her. When he arrived here, he did a lot in her mouth, including filing down the abnormal growth of her teeth. I did the rest of the exam. We worked well together. There is great cooperation between zoo veterinarians.”
“In the summer we don’t do any extra exams. We add misters, ice blocks and shade.”
“The unpredictability [is most challenging with medical procedures]! I may have an idea, but I don’t know what is going on with that animal. There is so much that we just don’t know yet. We do the best we can to care for the animals. LOCALE MAGAZINE 109

“The best week of my entire life.” That’s what she said on the day we left Mexico after a whirlwind week of wedding activities and nuptials, and it was exactly what I needed to hear. When we were engaged two years earlier, we struggled to pick an exact date because both of us liked the idea of being engaged. We also had the hardest time imagining what the perfect wedding would look like or even where it would be. As with most newly engaged couples, we scoured Instagram feeds, wedding websites and asked for advice from friends, pouring hours into finding the perfect place to say “I do.” After what seemed like thousands of hours searching, nothing felt like “us” and we nearly gave up. Once we stopped looking, we discovered there was another way. Sometimes you are inspired and sometimes inspiration finds you. Mexico feels like a second home to me and Erin. We love taking last minute road trips to Rosarito, feeling the pressure instantly leave our bodies as we cross the border. We head to Tulum regularly to experience a laid back, coconut-watered-down version of Los Angeles and have flown south to Cabo and Todos Santos for everything from restorative couple weekends to full-blown, outrageous birthday celebrations. It was on one of these trips to Todos Santos, sipping on tequila and not thinking about our wedding, that it hit us—Mexico. We almost said simultaneously, “We need to get married in Mexico.”

Where we got married in Mexico was just as important to us as getting married in Mexico, so the search began again. Tulum was too far and Rosarito too close. Todos Santos was just the right distance and oh-so romantic, but lacked the hotel space we thought we needed. With 100 guests as our target, we wanted to find a place that was easy and inexpensive to fly to and could accommodate everyone at one resort. It was also our goal to find a location that felt like Mexico, not the modern, gentrified and reimagined version, but truly authentic—think Saltillo tiles and bright colors. Lastly, we wanted it to be oceanfront with an amazing pool. The Sheraton Grand Los Cabos, Hacienda Del Mar ticked all of our boxes. It was 114 LOCALE MAGAZINE
close to the airport and close enough to the city for our friends to make nightly excursions. Its oceanfront pool was large enough that we often came downstairs to find 40 or 50 of our friends swimming or riding the shore-breaking waves. Plus, the property was large enough that you weren’t bumping into someone around every corner. We flew from Orange County to Cabo San Lucas about one year in advance to view the property in person and they catered to our every need. They helped us arrange the flowers, DJ, rooms, transportation, cakes and food. They even arranged a wedding coordinator to answer all of the questions we didn’t remember or know to ask. We left after that weekend confident that we wouldn’t have anything to worry about.

Erin made the trek from Orange County to Los Angeles where she had arranged four appointments in one day at various bridal showrooms. Her sister, Amber, and two of her bridesmaids, Karina and Jacquelyn, joined her. Her last appointment of the day was at Grace Loves Lace, an Australian company with a bohemian boutique in Venice. They served the girls endless Champagne and berries. Erin tried on dress after dress but it was starting to look like she wouldn’t find the right one that day—then she spotted it. It was hanging in a corner, something she wasn’t sure she would like at first, covered in French lace with a long train. As soon as she slipped it on, she immediately knew. All the girls loved it as well and could tell Erin did too. She began beaming as soon as she put it on. Erin is a firework junkie. We often position ourselves on the Fourth of July in a spot that allows us to watch as many shows as possible at the same time, tapping each other the entire time saying, “Oh, look at that!” There is little in this world that makes her as happy as the explosion of a firework. Edson from Cabo Fireworks Company gave me the controller to start the show. I’ll always remember the look on my new bride’s face when I handed over the controller. This will always be one of my favorite memories. She pushed the button and seconds later we had fireworks exploding over our heads for three full minutes, although it felt much longer. 124 LOCALE MAGAZINE

TRENDS GONE BAD “Shoes tucked under hanging clothes on the floor—when you can’t see what you have, you can’t wear it! Visibility and accessibility is so important in a closet design.”

Designing a closet as unique as you are is no small feat. Whether you have a spacious walk-in or a small coat closet, organization and design are key to creating a comfortable and appealing home for your clothes and accessories. And just like your favorite designer threads, closets have trends too, often mirroring that of the rest of the home to create a cohesive look. The trend is modern, which according to Erin Hardy, National Design Manager at California Closets, is “a clutter-free space with a timeless finish palette of materials, clean lines, and a place for everything.” Hardy shared valuable tips with us on how to stay on trend and achieve your best closets at home.

SMALL BUT MIGHTY “It’s really astounding how much ‘space’ you can gain with a closet system, even a basic one, at that! Storing seasonal items elsewhere is also a great way to maximize limited space.”
