Custommake a perfect pair of shoes with Shoemaker Debra Hovel (pg. 54)—her avant-garde approach will have you striding in style and comfort. Pick out a stylish leather handbag designed with utilitarian simplicity made by Lili Tanner (pg. 52) in her studio in Twentynine Palms. Their Churro Waffle and Blackberry Custard French Toast are must-try dishes for every brunch lover. You’ll want to check out our traditional Drink Experts (pg. 85) where six selected bartenders share their passion for mixology and break down how they creatively used a given ingredient to create their featured libation. If you’re planning
In our Humanitarian Feature (pg. 101), learn how you can give back to the desert community and help better the lives of those in need by getting involved with these two inspiring nonprofits: AAP-Food Samaritans, who raise funds through their annual events to provide nutritional support for low-income people living with HIV/AIDS; and Well in the Desert, who strives to eliminate homelessness by providing job assistance, health insurance and food distribution. Don’t miss reading about our cover star (pg. 40), Candice Patton, who is shattering cultural norms in the entertainment industry and helping girls and women everywhere speak their truths. To sum up my Editor’s Note, I leave you with a quote by Anton Chekhov, a Russian playwright and short story writer: “People don’t notice whether it’s winter or summer when they’re happy.” To the wonderful people of Greater Palm Springs, as we frolic in the midst of spring, I hope you find your happy through every season.

Walking onto the property of La Serena Villas, it was easy to see how the boutique hotel lives up to its name. The cloudy morning sky left a perfectly still blue-gray reflection in the hotel pool, and the only things moving along the clean, white walls of the villas were the occasional breeze-blown leaves or fluttering shadows cast by the painted lady butterfly migration.
W
This tranquil atmosphere set the tone for what was happening inside one of the villas: Candice Patton was prepping for her photoshoot. No stranger to the buzz of a production team, Patton sat peacefully in her chair as Makeup Artist Crystal Tran and Hair Stylist Lauren Clark got the alreadystunning Patton camera-ready. “The moodboard [for the photoshoot] was really glowy, a little bit whimsical and just a gorgeous, Palm Springs-y vibe,” Tran explained. “Candice has got really beautiful skin, so I tried to do something clean with a little bit of a smokey eye [and] some sparkles on it. Then I got a lip that accentuated her natural lip color. She’s so gorgeous that it really doesn’t take much!”
wardrobe, Clark noted that the look she was going for with Patton’s hair was a beautiful, soft, textured wave. “She’s so nice,” Clark said. “So easy to work with and really personable!” Moving onto wardrobe, all anyone could see in the master bedroomturned-dressing room was an incredible selection of lovely pastel pantsuits and an array of to-die-for accessories. “I tried to go with everything that Palm Springs is: bright and colorful. I researched the hotel, so that helped with color—we’re sticking to cooler tones but we might be doing a little lavender at the end,” Wardrobe Stylist Teresita Madrigal disclosed. “Big earrings, bright colors and anything to make her beautiful skin pop.” With the stunning backdrop of La Serena Villas and a dazzling subject before him, Photographer Michael Wesley had plenty of inspiration to work with. Expertly posing, it was no surprise that Patton was comfortable in front of the camera, knowing when exactly to smize or to flash a Mona Lisa smile. From super suit to power suit, Patton’s cover-ready transformation was as seamless as it was beautiful—no superpowers necessary!

For Candice Patton, playing a leading role on a superhero show was a dream she never thought would be possible to achieve. “I think just being a black woman, it didn’t seem very possible,” she reveals. “So I don’t think that I had those dreams.” But after landing a main role on “The Flash,” Patton began to discover that this was only the beginning of discovering her true power. Born in Jackson, Mississippi and raised in Plano, Texas, Patton was taught from a young age how important it is to be driven for success—especially as a woman. “[My mom]’s always been the person that I’ve tried to be like. She was a working mom and I think she inadvertently instilled this idea of working hard and achieving for yourself. My dad worked, too, but I think it was really nice to see my mom also contribute to the household.” From there, that simple yet powerful example that her mother gave influenced Patton to become the woman that she is today. “It was a no-brainer that that’s what I would do. I would go to work and achieve for myself—so I’ve never really looked to a man or any other person to support me.”
B
After completing her education and receiving her BFA from Dallas’ Southern Methodist University, from which she graduated Summa Cum Laude, Patton followed her dreams and moved to Los Angeles. After a string of roles on various films and TV shows, some including The Guest, “The Young and the Restless” and “The Game,” she landed her most noteworthy role yet: Iris West. “Career-wise, I’m proud of not giving up. It’s not so much about where I am but just the sheer tenacity to stick with it,” Patton says. “‘Cause, of course, there were times I wanted to just quit and pack up and go back home and just do something else, but looking back I’m really proud that I’ve stuck with it.” All of her hard work and self-proclaimed tenacity has paid off. Through her role as Iris West, Patton has proven herself to be an integral part of DC’s TV domain. Even though she is the love interest of
Barry Allen (aka the Flash), West goes through her own character development and never wavers in her personal and moral strength. “She’s very strongwilled and strong-minded so we’ve always shared that in common,” Patton says with a smile. “She’s definitely a character that I have a lot of respect for and have fun playing.” Throughout the past five seasons of “The Flash,” West goes through her own trials, tribulations and even some surprising transformations (no spoilers here!). Not only is Iris West a hero in her own right, but she is also an incredible role model. “For her to not have powers and still be a hero, I think is really empowering to a lot of young women.” And she would be correct. The superhero world is predominantly made up of male characters with either natural-born powers, such as Superman, or with powers that have manifested via an external force like Green Lantern’s ring or a freak accident at Barry Allen’s lab. While superheroines appeared in American comics in the 1940s (around the time Rosie the Riveter made her debut), it took a while for the characters to be treated with the same heroic aptitude as their male counterparts—even a version of Wonder Woman was pushed into the homemaker role after the end of WWII saw most American women go from factory worker to housewife. In truth, superheroines weren’t really ‘commonplace’ until around the 1990s, but even then most leading, non-super female roles (especially love interests of the main hero) were often used as damsels, no matter how brave or strong of a character she was. Think about it—even the fearless and determined Lois Lane was regularly being caught mid-air by Superman after a villain had flung her off of a skyscraper.

“Career-wise, I’m proud of not giving up. It’s not so much about where I am but just the sheer tenacity to stick with it.” —Candice Patton Needless to say, female characters who played the hero’s love interest were oftentimes (and to no fault of their own) a form of weakness for the main hero. But thanks to a recent push in serious girl power, these roles are changing, and Iris West is an excellent example of that. “She’s pretty fearless despite not having any powers,” Patton explains. “I think we’ve done a good job showing over the past five seasons that she never lets that get in the way with her trying to get involved and be heroic in her own right, which I think is really, really cool.” For Patton, playing West’s character isn’t just about representing women—it’s also about representing women of color. “I was a huge Batman fan growing up and I love the idea of a superhero, but yeah, it wasn’t really something that I thought was possible [for me],” Patton says, remembering how most superheroes that she saw on TV were, for the majority, white males. “It’s kind of crazy that I’m here and that so many girls who look like me are believing it’s possible for them because they see so much more [representation] now.” “The reach that [the show has] had—that I’ve had— gets lost on me because we shoot in Vancouver and we’re kind of isolated up there,” says Patton. “But as soon as we land at Comic-Con or any of these huge events you see how much this show, these characters [and the representation of diversity] mean to people, and how it’s changed the industry and how it’s changed the superhero genre—yeah, it’s pretty incredible when I really sit back and think about it.” But Patton’s passion for making the future a better place for her fans didn’t stop there. “Caity [Lotz] and I, she’s on another DC TV show, we just wanted a way to connect with our fans in a more genuine way other than seeing them at conventions and only being able to give them a quick autograph and a hello and goodbye,” she explains. Upon meeting their favorite TV idols, “these girls would come up and share their experiences and tell [Patton and Lotz] how much [their] characters meant to them as young women.” Not only was it empowering, it was also a strong foundation for what Patton and Lotz did next: “We wanted to be able to give something back to them and to show them examples of how
we deal with life as women, and it’s become a community where people in general just share their experiences as women no matter what walk of life they’re from.” That community that Patton’s referring to is Shethority, an online community which she and Lotz established in order to create a safe, positive, empowering space for women (including “cis women, transwomen, genderqueer women and non-binary people who are significantly female-identified”) to share their experiences and support each other. Not only does Shethority serve as a day-by-day hub for anyone looking for a healthy dose of girl power, but the online community also sells merchandise which raises proceeds to be donated to foundations such as Girls Not Brides, Girls, Inc. and Girl Forward. Through this site, Patton’s main goal was to do her part in changing the dialogue of how women interact with other women. “I think media has pushed this idea that we are each other’s adversaries and I think the opposite is actually true,” Patton explains, saying that she believes that women, by supporting other women, create a stronger, healthier experience for everyone. “There’s just always been this narrative that women are in competition with each other and so I genuinely want to be a part in any way that I can to change that narrative by showing that anytime women come together and work together, it’s for the good of everyone involved.” And this is an idea that Patton hopes to continue and represent through all aspects of her career as well as her life. She wants her struggles and her successes to pave the way for the girls of the future. To the girls of the next generation, she wishes to offer this message: speak up. “I think as women, throughout history, we’ve been taught to be quiet and say less and there’s this movement of speaking up in general—whether it’s sexual assault or bullying or speaking up about things that you believe in,” says Patton with her head held high. “I think that’s where our power is and where it will be in the future. So I encourage everyone, but especially women, to continue to speak up even if it’s hard, even if your voice is shaking, even if you’re terrified. There’s power and freedom in speaking your truth.”

When a lady in a parking lot wanted to buy the simple leather clutch that Lili Tanner had made for herself, she knew she was onto something. That became the catalyst for what has now grown into a business. She now creates leather handbags and jewelry in her studio (open by appointment only) in Twentynine Palms, a city located in the middle of the Mojave Desert.
Mojave Musing
LILI TANNER CREDENTIALS: Handbag and Jewelry Designer, Lili T. California “It all comes out of my personal desire or need.”
Originally a writer, author and columnist, Tanner grew up in Switzerland and worked in advertising for many years before she found her true calling. Whether she is designing bags from the softest buttery leathers or making jewelry with precious metals and stones, her premise is always to create something she’d enjoy wearing first.
“I must really love the design and love wearing it. I discovered that if I’m really true to that, other people will love it too.”
“Simplicity done in a playful yet substantial way is how I would describe the jewelry. For the bags, the basis is always utilitarian simplicity with, again, a playful element be it color or a detail.”

You may be surprised to learn that it takes Shoemaker Debra Hovel about 40 hours to make a pair of custom shoes. Her avant-garde style can be described as either Marie Antoinetteinspired, complete with bows, frills and embellishments, or veer to the other side of the scale with exotic skins and contemporary shapes that look like they’d be worn sometime in the future.
One Step Ahead
DEBRA HOVEL CREDENTIALS: Designer, Maker and Founder, Debra Hovel Footwear “I prize color, unique designs and comfort that make men and women want to stride. No mincing along for me. Strong powerful movement.”
Before embarking on her career, Hovel and her husband, Richard, had a design consultancy company, which meant she had always been involved in researching trends and colors. With shoes, she took that experience and turned it into something that she was able to create with her hands—but to be worn on the feet.
“My shoes are made to wear without socks— lots of color and happy combinations. Tan, happy feet in nice leather-lined shoes are my idea of great California style.”
“I love designs with references to the past but with something unique that will make people stop and ask me where I bought those shoes. I recently made several pairs for myself that illustrate this idea.”
She’s a Natural • “Nature puts all colors and patterns together and that amuses me to do the same with shoes.” Sole-ly Yours • Hovel never designs the same pair of shoes twice. Each pair is unique.

Leathersmith Ray Lansburg started out with a graphic design degree but worked for many years with a master handbag maker/designer before embarking on creating his own brand, The Black Acre. His primary focus is creating men’s leather wallets in his studio—a fully renovated 1920s carriage house in his Fullerton backyard. From here, Lansburg crafts leather goods with a salt-of-the-earth sort of appeal—creating designs that have simple beauty yet are carefully constructed with meticulous detail in every stitch. And if you have been watching the new version of television hit, “MacGyver,” then you may have seen a couple of Lansburg’s goods: one of his belts was even crafted into a slingshot!

RAY LANSBURG CREDENTIALS: Designer and Founder, The Black Acre “My phantom wallet is a current favorite. It’s a long snap wallet with lots of cool subtle details inside.”
“My design philosophy is to always have a unique silhouette to every item and make goods that are fun to carry and use.”
“My main focus is men's wallets, particularly taking vintage styles, wallets you would have bought at a truck stop or swap meet, and reinventing them and decking them out with the best leather and hardware possible.”
School of Rock • Lansburg draws his style inspiration from rock and roll legends Lemmy Kilmister and Elvis Presley.

Yokishop’s philosophy stems from the Japanese term “mottainai,” a direct translation for “using the whole fish.” But for Designer Jeff Yokoyama, a veteran of clothing design for 39 years, it’s a business model.
Renew and Repurpose
JEFF YOKOYAMA CREDENTIALS: Designer, Yokishop
He creates unique clothing from existing products and materials that have been discarded in the market. Each pattern is created and each garment hand-cut and sewn in their Newport Beach studio with an aim to provide jobs and create a smaller carbon footprint. Selling directly to the customer as well as to a selection of handpicked boutiques in LA, Hawaii and Tokyo, their ethos is not only doing the right thing but also being different in the process.
Back to Vintage • “I get my inspiration from old clothing. This is a huge passion of ours as well as a huge responsibility.”
“I buy defected military shirts and jackets, from camo to khaki to just army green, and we repurpose those [materials] by putting different things on them from our other company called Mucho Aloha.”
“[My favorite item is] the beach towel hoodie. From the used beach towel, it becomes part of the body. Then I go to the Goodwill where they’re discarding tons of sweatshirts and purchase them for $2 a pound. I’ll use the sleeves, the hood, the rib, the zippers—I tear them all apart and add them onto the beach towel hoodie.”
Baked Goods • Over-production is not something that’s a part of Yokoyama’s practice. “We’re like a bakery,” he explains. “We make every day and then every day someone comes in and purchases something.”

Throw in the Towel • “All these hotels use towels like it’s nobody’s business,” Yokoyama explains. “We would love to collaborate with hotels and resorts across the country and make cool beach towel hoodies for them and their gift shops.” Less Is More • “We take things that are already here, already accumulated its carbon footprint, already had three or four gallons of water usage, and instead of throwing it away... we could all work together in repurposing product rather than buying more product.”

The uninhibited language used on her dainty jewelry presents empowerment to her and to her customers. Her jewelry is intended to be worn every day; she likes it to be reminder to persevere and be strong in whatever it is you’re going through in life—and all tinged with a tongue in cheek sense of humor that makes you proud to wear it.
“My very best work comes when I’m passionately frustrated about something whether it’s personal or something unjust in the world.”
“I want my designs to be worn by that single mom who needs something to remind her of her strength. Wilma & Frieda prides itself in serving “comfort food with a twist,” according to General Manager Carlos Calixto. They opened just five years ago at the Gardens on El Paseo in Palm Desert, which they now refer to as “the café,” while the newer Palm Springs location is known as “the restaurant, the bigger brother.” Originally, CoOwner Kelly McFall’s trips to desert eateries convinced her that they could do something different than what everyone else was offering. And so they did!

• “It’s our version of a Belgian Waffle, which is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with a little bit of vanilla,” says Calixto. “Once we make the waffle, we brush it with a little clarified butter, then we coat it with cinnamon sugar, like a churro. Before it goes out, it’s topped with a Madagascar vanilla creme anglaise drizzle. It’s one of our [best]sellers.”
• There is a talented chef at each Wilma & Frieda location—Chef Eddie Perez in Palm Desert and Chef Oscar Ayala in Palm Springs.

• “This is really our staple that we’ve been making since the beginning,” Calixto points out. “It’s a bread pudding-style custard. We take a pan and layer it with thick cut brioche bread and fresh blackberries in between and pour a vanilla custard over it. We bake it, then let it cool down. We slice it into pieces, then dip it into another French toast batter, place it on a flat top and sear it nice and hot. Then finish it off with fresh blackberries, blackberry sauce and powdered sugar.”

Excitement grew and the last rays of sun settled in between palm tree fronds. Something special was brewing behind the walls of a nondescript building in Palm Springs. The doors opened and suddenly diners were transported away to a different time and place. Guests walked into a dark room. Italian music blared overhead as red and blue neon lights set the mood. Guests were seated in red gingham tables, and a candlelit glow enhanced the intimacy of the event.

Established six years ago, PS Underground is one of the area’s most secretive dining and entertainment experiences. PS Underground invites strangers to fall into friendly camaraderie and enjoy a show like no other. What started as a dinner between friends has transformed into one of the most innovative and cutting edge experiences in the desert. Themes range from the avant-garde but always meet at the intersection of food and theater. During a season, four to five shows are put on every week. Its recent That’s Amore-themed event was hosted by Gilmore Rizzo.

What started as a dinner between friends has transformed into one of the most innovative and cutting edge experiences in the desert.
FOOD • PS Underground’s That’s Amore menu, an enticing Italian feast, will take you down memory lane!
DECOR • That’s Amore brought the Italian-American dining experience with red and white checkered tablecloths, retro table lamps and mood lighting.
The food menu is never revealed beforehand which further compliments the theatrical aspects. Teased with the smells of Italian spices cooking nearby, the buzz of delightful uncertainty among the guests filled the air.
PRICE • Pricing varies, but guests can usually take part in the dinner theatre experience and enjoy the multiplecourse meal for under $100.
Conversations flowed in the cozy space as guests dived into the first course, a salad with an Italian twist. Crunchy greens dressed in savory dressing, mozzarella balls, croutons and a fresh burst of flavor from cherry tomatoes popped into each bite. After an interlude, Rizzo’s wistful memories of his family threw guests into their own

nostalgic dream with the Italian Wedding Soup. The combination of wholesome veggies and handmade chicken meatballs was like a warm hug from nonna. The third and main course of the event, lasagna al forno, featured layers of cheesy goodness, flavorful meat, veggies and sauce. Rizzo ended his show with a bittersweet anecdote about his mother, and the final course reflected that sentiment—tiramisu, warm roasted grapes and a refreshing blood orange sorbet. After three courses of savory food, dessert served as a reminder that life is a lot like food—it can be sweet, filling and delicious, but the most important thing is the memories you make from it. 92 LOCALE MAGAZINE

When asked what encouraged the creation of his Maine Lobster Pot Pie, Chef Dervieux responded with the fact that he wanted to put a spin on the classic comfort food.
Speed Racer • Aside from cooking, Chef Dervieux likes to race vintage cars. Heard It Through the Grapevine • Cuistot received the Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator Magazine every year since 2005—an achievement the Cuistot family is deservedly proud of. Back to His Roots • When asked if Chef Dervieux ever visits the Motherland, he said, “I was [in France] last summer. I don’t go every year. When I do go, I get some new ideas… pick their brains.” Listen to Your Art • On the walls of Cuistot, you’ll find rotating artwork from French artist, François Lucet, which are available for purchase to take home.
This visit takes us to the vision-made-reality by Chef Bernard Dervieux at his French restaurant, Cuistot. You’ll receive a delectable tour of his Maine Lobster Pot Pie dish, a creamy fusion of French cuisine and Southern comforts. The unusual winter has detoured the painted lady butterfly migration path and they greet customers as they enter the warm eatery, which was modeled after a French farmhouse. The main reason behind this ambiance comes from lauded Chef Dervieux and his French roots. According to the chef, his successful Palm Desert enterprise was inspired by his upbringing in the countryside, which was full of meals made from seasonal ingredients straight from the garden or farm.
T
The Maine Lobster Pot Pie dish has a medley of fresh (primarily root) vegetables, is covered with flaky, delicious homemade puff pastry and is chock-full of the star of the dish: lobster. When first laying eyes on this scrumptious cloud of puff, you notice the toasted pastry overflowing the serving pie dish. Once you dig in and taste the chunks of lobster followed by bites of carrots, peas and turnip, you’ll be grateful to know that you won’t have to worry about eating for another day or two after this. It’s hearty, flavorful and oh-so satisfying. When asked what encouraged the creation of his Maine Lobster Pot Pie, Chef Dervieux responded with the fact that he wanted to put a spin on the classic comfort food. Along with that, he wanted to make sure the freshest ingredients were used. For this, he gathers much of Cuistot’s top-quality vegetables from local growing operations including Chino and the Coachella Valley, some of which have booths at the farmers market that takes place weekly right next to Cuistot. “We are very lucky that way,” Chef Dervieux noted. Cuistot is primarily situated at the mouth of El Paseo off of Highway 111 in Palm Desert. It was a vacant, 12-acre piece when Chef Dervieux broke ground in 2003. Previously, Cuistot had been in a smaller location on El Paseo since it opened in 1987. The current restaurant incorporates three separate indoor dining areas and two outdoor areas. You walk into the central dining space called Chef Bernard’s Room, a richly colored space dotted by white-clothed tables and a front row seat to what’s cooking in the exhibition kitchen.
The main dining area, called The Fireplace Room, welcomes you with the option of intimate booth seating, massive wood beam supports above and the focal point: a floor-to-ceiling fireplace surrounded with sentimental artifacts that include portraits of Chef Dervieux’s family. This is truly an inviting space. Should you be so lucky to visit Cuistot on a refreshing spring afternoon or evening, you may want to take advantage of the outdoor patio area. Surrounded by swaying palm trees that buffer diners from outside distractions and serenaded by the sound of flowing waterfalls and authentic French harmonies, this outdoor setting is a calming respite. Additionally, there is a heated patio outside of the opulent, marble bar top and a private Wine Room for intimate parties of 48 or less. Speaking of wine, the extensive wine list includes a heavy selection of French varieties from the Loire Valley, Rhône Valley and Burgundy, among others. The Maine Lobster Pot Pie is not the only favorite on the menu—Chef Dervieux stated the Skillet Roasted Veal Chop, Roasted Rack of Lamb and quail stuffed with sweet bread are worthy of a try as well. Cuistot is closed during the Valley’s off-season, typically mid-June through midSeptember. How does Chef Dervieux spend this time of reflection? It would seem that he is one of the few people who manage to make a living doing what they love to do—and still do! “I like to cook at home for my family,” he said. As they say: do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. LOCALE MAGAZINE 97

full of food—what might seem to us as normal and day-to-day are actually privileges that we can sometimes take for granted. Enter AAP-Food Samaritans and Well in the Desert, two nonprofits that are working hard to better the lives of those in need in the Greater Palm Springs area. Focused on improving the lives of those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, AAP-Food Samaritans throws annual events to raise funds to support their cause. As for Well in the Desert, their efforts to reduce or eliminate homelessness in Palm Springs have been an ongoing project since 1996. The next time you’re thinking about giving back to your community, consider sharing the love with these two incredible organizations.

Watching the Oscars at TRIO Restaurant in Palm Springs means glamour and generosity come together for an important cause in the Coachella Valley. Authentic Oscar memorabilia, golden feather boas, sparkle-tinged suits and laughter are always present at the event. The “Hollywood’s Biggest Night” Oscar Party is held annually at TRIO in Palm Springs and benefits the nonprofit: AAP-Food Samaritans. We got to attend the ‘orange’ carpet event and spoke with several members of the organization who are supporting and impacting the lives of those with HIV/AIDS.
Celebrities filled the TV screens as guests began to filter into the restaurant, and the scent of popcorn mingled in the air. Guests were given the celeb treatment as they walked down the orange carpet and got their pictures taken by the “paparazzi” with local drag queen and Palm Springs ambassador, Bella Da Ball. There was a cheerful and warm atmosphere. Guests hugged

and mingled with one another while an MC sold Oscar ballots. “We like to have fun while we raise money,” said Director Vicky Sullivan. According to Sullivan, the nonprofit centers around “honor, responsibility, respect and charity.” AAP-Food Samaritans sets the bar by “mainly being an incredibly giving organization.” “Traditionally, this weekend is slow for business,” explained Tony Marchese, owner of TRIO and president of AAP-Food
“
AAP-FOOD SAMARITANS KNOWS THAT LIVING WITH CHRONIC ILLNESSES PRESENTS A WHOLE NEW SET OF CHALLENGES, AND BY HELPING WITH BASIC NEEDS, THEY HOPE TO HELP MAKE THOSE DIFFICULTIES A LITTLE BIT EASIER.
A-List Buffet • The “Hollywood’s Biggest Night” 2019 menu was a feast! The six-course meal consisted of Little Benny’s Kettle Corn, butternut squash soup, Asian lamb lollipop (a ginger soy sauce marinated rack of lamb with goat cheese polenta), sundried tomato ravioli with vodka tomato sauce and fresh basil, surf & turf (featuring medallion filet mignon and jumbo shrimp with sour cream mashed potatoes) and Orange Ripieno, an orange sorbetto!
Samaritans. “So we decided to host this party for charity. It fills the seats and gives back.” For its 10th year, the event shined brighter than ever. “The goal,” Marchese added, “is to bring part of the Palm Springs community into [our] world.” While fun events like these are key in helping AAP-Food Samaritans raise money for its operational budget, the nonprofit receives no state or federal funding. Instead, special events like these, along with private donations, foundation grants and local support, help with fundraising. AAP-Food Samaritans began 28 years ago in 1991 as an AIDS Assistance program. Since then, the organization has expanded its reach and helps people with other severe illness such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and heart and liver disease. Their mission and goal is for clients to “continue to live their lives with dignity and self-respect.”
Through the Eyes of an Angel • The Jeannette Rockefeller Angel Program is named after the former First Lady of Arkansas. Levels of giving include: Angel, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium and Rhodium Angels! Silver Angel and up donors receive special benefits for their support!
AAP-Food Samaritans knows that living with chronic illnesses presents a whole new set of challenges, and by helping with basic needs, they hope to help make those difficulties a little bit easier. Every client is vetted for income (less than $18,090) and residency to ensure eligibility. Some are also randomly drug-tested. Each month they distribute vouchers to their clients that can be exchanged for food and household items such as toiletries. Food vouchers are redeemable at local Stater Bros. Markets. Since its inception, the charity has been able to help change the lives of more than 2,300 people in the Coachella Valley. Executive Director Mark Anton said, “It is important to give Photoshoot Location: TRIO 707 N Palm Canyon Dr Palm Springs, CA 92262 760.864.8746 www.triopalmsprings.com
back and help raise funds for those in need.” Anton started as a board member, and has been involved with AAP-Food Samaritans for the last 16 years, eventually becoming the Executive Director in 2009. “Fundraising is a major part of the organization,” Anton explained. “Fundraising is really challenging because there are so many good causes and we are in a relatively small valley. We are asking the same people for money all the time. We are trying to educate young people about philanthropy and how important it is to continue because a lot of the folks that are major donors are getting about in years.” Lively events, like those the AAPFood Samaritans put on, help attract young, new faces. Most of the people at the “Hollywood's Biggest Night” Oscars Party are those who aren't quite familiar with the work the nonprofit achieves. “Our goal isn't really about money, but to fill every seat we can,” Anton said. “But if...people [are] having a fun time while donating, it makes it a win-win for everybody.” Educating attendees plays a major role in these events to help retain potential new members. The “Evening of the Stars” is another major event that helps attract new donors. Celebrities like Cyndi Lauper, Barry Manilow, the B-52’s and Gladys Knight have all attended in the past. “I just want people to have fun and enjoy themselves,” Anton remarked. As CEO, Anton said that his goals for the organization is to “just keep clients fed. We used to have a calling list when the economy was low but now we are in a position to take more in.”

THIS NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION LENDS A HAND TO THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST WRITTEN BY: LYNNE EODICE
Well in the Desert gives hope, dignity and healthy meals to the homeless via its food and intervention programs. With a yearly budget of $450,000, the nonprofit organization receives donations from churches, foundations and generous individuals. From setting up Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations to van transportation to hot lunch sites, these services accommodate to socially and economically-challenged residents. In order to go indepth with Well in the Desert’s history and goals, we had the opportunity to catch up with President and CEO Arlene Rosenthal and talk about the importance of such an organization in the Coachella Valley and Greater Palm Springs overall.
W
“Well in the Desert was founded in 1996 by Dr. Wayne McKinney, a retired pediatrician from Hawaii,” Rosenthal explains. “He noticed that there were homeless people in Palm Springs and started a simple food program.” McKinney started out by giving hot meals to the homeless at a local church. He continued to do this for some time, but eventually he was forced to leave when difficulties started and the operation was moved to Sunrise Park in Palm Springs. 104 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Another important event is the Desert Jam Session, which features amazing musicians. This year, they will honor Gavin McCloud for his generous community involvement.
About 15 years ago, Rosenthal stepped in as the “interim” president at a time when everyone really wanted the organization to go away, she says. When she took over, she found that McKinney had kept the files in written form, so she updated this system. She also began grant writing and raised funds to save the organization financially. Rosenthal resurrected Well in the Desert and has led it to become the major grassroots, nonprofit organization that it is today. She says that she’s often amazed by all the amenities that Well in the Desert gives to the homeless. “We offer healthy, hot meals Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.,” Rosenthal says. Friends provide their homes and church halls for this purpose. Staff and volunteers cook at the Church of St. Paul’s in the desert each day, and people have the opportunity to leave with a sack lunch if they choose to. “On Saturdays, we have food distribution and about 200-250 families come to our site in Palm Springs.” Well in the Desert gives healthy food to disadvantaged families with children, seniors, handicapped individuals and anyone who can prove that they live in a
domicile. They also provide emergency food boxes to people who have run out of food. Additionally, Well in the Desert provides heating and cooling centers where the homeless can receive clean clothing and a shower during the day. In May, Well in the Desert will begin offering bingo and a movie to the homeless once a week. This organization helps homeless and low-income families gain health insurance and jobs and assist those who are eligible to apply for disability. “Some want to go home, so we verify with their family that they’ll receive them and that they’ll have a place to live,” Rosenthal says. “Then we purchase a one-way Greyhound bus ticket for them along with a $100 Visa card so that they’ll have some money.” With so many services under their belt, Well in the Desert continues to pave the way for battling homelessness. By spreading awareness and giving recognition to those who help the community, the organization strengthens the effort to reduce and hopefully eliminate homelessness in the desert.

Considered a true visionary, Hugh Kaptur played a significant part in the development of the architectural design for the Palm Springs community from the late 1950s through the 2000s. His designs are fluid and organic with features that add protection from the harsh elements of the intense desert heat. This first major exhibition of Kaptur’s work reveals his impact on midcentury architecture, and lectures and tours will complement this exhibition which includes Kaptur’s architectural models, photos, slides and other materials.
