Inside Semihandmade Is Making Makeovers Affordable

Palm Springs

editor's note Well, it’s no secret—2020 hasn’t exactly been off to the smoothest start. But if anything, it’s been an exercise to see the brighter side of things. During times of uncertainty, I catch myself hearing my mom’s advice: “It’s not ‘I have to,’ it’s ‘I get to.’” While this advice usually came in the form of turning “having to do chores” into “getting to take care of a home,” it’s travelled with me in my adult life, and taken up residence as this year’s motto. For example: instead of worrying about work, it’s an opportunity to be more at rest. Instead of succumbing to fear, it’s an opportunity to seek knowledge (the real kind from actual experts, please), and instead of mourning what you don’t have, it’s an opportunity to be grateful for what you do have. While we’ve all been adjusting and putting the health of our loved ones and ourselves first, it’s imperative that we don’t forget the incredible independent businesses in our community. Show your support for Greater Palm Springs businesses and thumb through our Shoppe Guide (pg. 53), where you’ll see

the artists and makers who are creating goods that’ll lift your spirits and add life to your home and wardrobe. I feel so blessed to have such incredible people in this magazine. Among them are a chef who’s bringing delicious Vietnamese fusion to Palm Springs (pg. 86), a young and brilliant artistic director for the Palm Springs International Film Festival (pg. 110) and an interior stylist who is restoring a historic home back to its former midcentury glory (pg. 134). Actor Clive Standen, a personal hero of mine, is also gracing the cover of this magazine, and I truly hope you love his kind, impactful words as much as I do (pg. 38). In times like these, please remember to think and be conscious of those around you. As cliché as it sounds, we truly are all in this together. Stay healthy, support one another and choose joy. For now, I hope this magazine brings a smile to your face and an opportunity to escape any worries you may have.

As always—happy reading,

Yucca Valley

The day of Clive Standen’s photoshoot began with blue skies, brisk, 45-degree weather and a dirt road off the beaten path. Music filled the airstream at The Desert Yacht Club, as hair and makeup stylist Aiprll Patino and stylist Neil Cohen got Standen photo-ready for the day. The group, accompanied by Pippo the resident cat, walked out to the Stargazing Boat, parked on the peak of a hill, where Standen was ready to soak up the sun—and the spotlight. Leading Man “I am in the middle of Joshua Tree, shooting in the beautiful surroundings, and I’ve got Mumford & Sons playing in the background with some lovely people and great clothes,” said Standen. “This is pretty much the perfect day!” An Idyllic Setting The Desert Yacht Club was an incredible location for the photoshoot, not only for its plethora of backdrops and helpful staff, but for its natural surroundings as well. “I love how surreal this location is,” Patino said. “It’s gorgeous— the clouds, the sky, the landscape—it’s beautiful, it’s bizarre, it’s amazing.” Nothing But Blue Skies “Clive was so kind to everyone and eager to try different looks, locations and poses,” LOCALE’s production coordinator, Lauren Lewellen, said. “When the production team arrived the night before, it was pretty windy, but we woke up to blue skies. It’s been a perfect day with the perfect team and the perfect subject.” Desert Daydream “Anytime you’re shooting out near Joshua Tree or Yucca Valley, I’ve always felt that it was a dreamland,” photographer Tae Kwon said as he was setting up between shoot locations. “You can just do whatever.” And with a subject like Standen, who was eager to climb around and experiment, the results were nothing short of incredible.

SOMETHING SWEET

Ò Hands down, Brandini Toffee is the best place for locally made sweets. I usually take several boxes with me to Italy for my friends. Their traditional toffee is addictive, and I’m a fan of supporting local entrepreneurship and manufacturing. They also offer tours of the manufacturing facility in Rancho Mirage! www.brandinitoffee.com

PIECE OF MY ART

Ò The best thing about working with local gallery owners is that they know your taste and are willing to source pieces from around the globe for you. We are very fortunate to have so many fine galleries in Palm Desert and along El Paseo. Walking the galleries in Palm Desert is a wonderful way to spend a day.

THE FINER THINGS

Ò For me, Ralph Lauren on El Paseo is a favorite luxury shop in Palm Desert. For gifts, however, I love Bottega Veneta. I am a fan of quality, and there is no better culture of fine craftsmanship than fine Italian merchandise. www.shopelpaseo.com

TAKE A HIKE

Ò I love hiking the Cross Trail. It does not take a lot of time, but reaching the summit gives you a fabulous view of both the Coachella Valley and the golf course at Stone Eagle. It can be done fairly quickly and is a great way to start your day. alltrails.com/trail/us/california/the-cross-trail

Ò My two favorite places for a luxurious meal are the Canyons Steakhouse at Bighorn and La Spiga. I enjoy both for the quality of their food and the ambiance. Living in the desert, I prefer dining outside, and both venues have fabulous outdoor environments. I live in Italy about four months a year—La Spiga gets it right. The food is authentic, and it is my home away from home.

I love the detail of the hidden pencil sharpener under the drafting desk, which doubles as the dining room table. www.psmuseum.org/visit/frey-house

PARK IT

Ò Another artsy location in Palm Springs is the Parker. The use of bold colors, high-end touches and great service make this an oasis in the desert for visitors and locals. The decor truly captures the oldschool charm of Palm Springs while still presenting as contemporary. www.parkerpalmsprings.com

SIGHTS TO SEE

Ò Three homes famous for their architecture are: Jim Isermann’s all-steel, Donald Wexler-designed home, Dennis and Molly Yares’ Lance O’Donnell-designed home and Linda Usher and Malcolm Lambe’s Larry Booth-designed home. All three are architectural masterpieces!

Ò One of the artsiest spots in Palm Springs is the Sparrows Lodge. Incredible artwork and decor inside and out make this hotel a must-see in Palm Springs. The tranquil, rustic, cabin-like design is mixed with contemporary touches, such as period furniture and cement floors. The openended barn centerpiece is a great place to gather for happy hour.

Towne is in The Shops at Thirteen Forty Five, a design collective of 14 boutiques in a 1955 E. Stewart Williams-designed building. The Shops are always evolving...we love the exchange of ideas and the collaborative creative experience while working with our fellow shop owners.

HEDGE YOUR BETS

Ò Hedge Palm Springs is tucked away in an industrial area of Cathedral City— it’s not a place you would just stumble across. We send people to their gallery to see an incredible collection of vintage furniture and contemporary art. On the surface, Clive Standen is what you’d picture as the definition of manliness. He’s played warriors, is an athletic champion and does his own stunts. Get to know him a little better and you’ll find that beyond the biceps and the beard is a caring father of three, an ambassador for marine life and someone who loves singing along to Mumford & Sons. In other words, Standen represents less of what it means to be a “man’s man” and more of what it means to be a man of the modern age.

Already very active with Muay Thai boxing and professional stunt training, Standen’s acting career began in his teens, which was around the time his mother had decided to go back to school so she could teach drama therapy to children with Down Syndrome. “I was 16 and very impressionable...and I really looked up to my mum and all the [21-year-old drama students] she was working with,” he says before cracking a smile. “At the same time, there was also a girl I really liked...and that’s where it started.”

A

With the support of a mother and teachers who believed in him, Standen decided to take the idea of acting professionally more seriously. “I’ve always been that person where you give me an incentive and I suddenly get tunnel vision, and I ride toward that goal,” he explains. From there, he decided to take classes to further his education on the subject but was disappointed by the amount of armchair knowledge the courses required. “I couldn’t just do theater, which was frustrating to me at the age of 16. I was like, ‘Why isn’t there a course that is practical to being an actor?’” Standen recalls. “A lot of the courses were all theory...and I had already read all the books that were on the syllabus. So I did a year of theater studies and [then] dropped out—I didn’t want to be a historian, I wanted to be an actor.” Standen found his place in performing arts courses, which not only allowed him to practice his craft, but it also let him explore the more physical side to performing, and this is where he was able to tie in his knack for athletic training. “It all came in handy for the stunts I do now!” he says. “I’m a little insane and crazy and a bit of a lunatic when it comes to stunts.” Needless to say, the combination of his acting and physical training fared well for him in his career. Best known for his role as Rollo in “Vikings” and Bryan Mills in the “Taken” TV series, Standen’s acting career has taken him around the world, through ancient and modern times alike. When he wasn’t sword fighting in Camelot or throwing axes in Kattegat, he was pulling off a heist in Rhode Island or getting hit by a car (then stealing said car). “It’s simply not true that you just walk into jobs,” Standen explains. “Usually you get cast for what your strength is. I’m a very physical actor; I have a very physical presence, and I got into acting to play numerous different characters—and characters that were far removed from myself.” “I don’t actually like playing onto type,” he continues. “But usually, that one audition you get right at the beginning of your career is the one where people go, ‘I can just see him playing that role!’ I think I was thrown into the historical epics, the dramas that are more physical, and now I can branch out.” His roles have all been very different characters to play, but there is something Standen loves about each of them: they are flawed. “I don’t think anyone’s perfect,” he says. “There’s something I hold on to and think about quite a lot: in Chuck Palahniuk’s ‘Fight Club’ (the book), the first time the main character sees Tyler Durden is on the beach, and he’s getting driftwood and shoving it in the sand…” The passage Standen’s referring to continues: “What Tyler had created was the shadow of a giant hand. Only now the fingers were Nosferatu-long and the thumb was too short, but he said how at exactly four-thirty the hand was perfect. The giant shadow hand was perfect for one minute, and for one perfect minute Tyler had sat in the palm of a perfection he’d created himself.” (Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club). “The point of that scene in the book is all you can expect from perfection is a moment, and if you look for anything more, you’re going to be disappointed,” Standen explains, “and I think human beings are the same. You can have many moments of perfection in any one day, but you have to look for them and appreciate them.”

LOCALE MAGAZINE 43

Extracurricular Activities When he’s not working, Standen is an acting ambassador for Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

He’s Got the Beat “I did a lot of contemporary dance training,” Standen shares, “and I think it actually helps with the choreography of fighting and the sword play—you pick up the moves and your movement ability is so much better.”

Parental Guidance “We have this little game around the dinner table now where I go, ‘Say one good thing about your day and one bad thing about your day,’” says Standen, “and none of the other kids or anyone around are allowed to question that bad thing… It’s about being readily available to communicate your feelings with the people you love.”

Location, Location, Location Some of Standen’s favorite filming locations have been in the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland and Tybee Island in Georgia.

Nice Handiwork Standen is a former international Muay Thai boxer, a fencing gold medalist and is ambidextrous with a sword.

Standen never shies away from his characters’ flaws. Instead, he embraces them, letting those imperfections add texture and humanity to the roles. Aside from being flawed, the roles throughout his career have all tended to be rough around the edges. Whether he’s played the honorable knight, the battlehungry viking or the vengeful ex-CIA operative, they can categorically be called men of violence. However, Standen’s most recent role of Anthony Lavelle in “Council of Dads” is a change of pace.

S

“There seems to be a big thing about toxic masculinity,” Standen says. “There’s nothing wrong with a man who cries and expresses emotion. And I wanted Anthony to be a hugger, a kisser. He’d hold his heart on his sleeve: when he’s angry, he’s angry; when he’s emotional, he’s emotional, you know?” Over the past few years, the term “toxic masculinity” has become an undeniable buzzword. The term not only challenges how our society sees men, but how our society shapes these men as well. It’s an idea that’s been around since the ‘80s, and it’s just now catching on in the mainstream. While the current rhetoric may seem like it’s mostly focused on calling out men for being

predatory or too aggressive, the term was originally created to question why our society raises our boys to feel shame for emotional expression, to utilize violence as an indicator of power and to be overtly self-reliant, among other points. While his warrior-type roles haven’t necessarily been poster boys for today’s idea of healthy masculinity (presumably due to the time periods the stories are based in), Standen has attempted to bring a more relevant portrayal of modern masculinity to his present-day characters. But not everyone has been on board with it. “I did have some time on ‘Taken’ [during] a very emotional scene...the scene felt very much like the scene in Se7en with Brad Pitt yelling, ‘What’s in the box? What’s in the box?’” Standen shares. “And I played the scene really emotionally—I had tears in my eyes— and the director came up to me and went, ‘Can we do another take? But can you stop the tears, because tough guys don’t cry.’” Despite this note, Standen felt strongly about this scene and continued to deliver an emotional performance, but by the time production was finished, each one of Standen’s tears had been edited out.

In a stark contrast, Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, the producers of “Council of Dads,” were seeking the opposite from their actors. “One of the reasons I signed on [to ‘Council of Dads’] was Tony Phelan saying, ‘Let’s just stamp out this toxic masculinity,’” Standen says. “And I told him that story, and he said, ‘Well, you’re not going to get that from me.’”

I

The NBC show, which aired this past March, follows the Perrys, a family that has just lost father and husband Scott Perry to cancer. In his remaining months, Scott had created a Council of Dads to help take care of his five children after he’s gone— from driving lessons to words of wisdom. “It’s been really great to play a character that’s emotionally ready,” says Standen. “There’s a lot of violence and gratuity in the world right now... and ‘Council of Dads’ has a really positive message, and it’s full of joy...and optimism about moving on, and finding humor through grief, and it’s about who shows up. It really mirrors the modern family today, I think.” Aside from its relevance, one reason Standen believes the show will resonate well with its audience is because he has seen the parallels between the story and his own reallife experiences firsthand. “‘Council of Dads’ works on so many levels, but what’s interesting to me, especially with my character, is the role of a father in our society,” Standen explains. “My dad left when I was eight years old, and I haven’t seen him since. I had an amazing man who stepped in and took over that role, and I don’t like calling my stepdad my stepfather—he’s my dad. Anyone can be a father, but it takes a strong man to be a dad.” “‘Council of Dads’ is about a man who dies of cancer...but it doesn’t have to be about death; there are lots of families out there where dads just walk out, they leave or they’re away on business for very long periods of time,” Standen continues. “So on one hand, it’s about the role of single moms and how hard they work, but it’s also about how important the role of a father figure is.” On-screen, Anthony Lavelle is a man without a family, whose superpower would be “the ability to talk to children on their level.” Standen describes his character as the “cool uncle” that kids can trust and talk to, but he’s still able to fill in as the strong male role model. “But what’s interesting is that he’s never had anyone love him,” Standen shares, “and he needs this family as much as they need him.” Another way that Anthony paralleled reality is that Standen plays the best friend of a man battling cancer, a role he has played in real life. “My best friend—best man at my wedding, best friend I have in my whole life—was diagnosed with cancer, and he was very, very ill,” Standen says. When he originally met with Rater and Phelan, who wanted him for the part of Anthony, Standen pitched himself to play the role of Scott Perry, who dies in the first episode. “I start crying in my interview with them, going ‘I’m not sure I can play this role because my best friend is dying of cancer, and I don’t want to be the guy on TV playing the best friend.’ And they said, ‘Well, maybe this is why you need to play this character.’” This is a man who has fallen backwards off a three-story-high wall (on purpose), but the role of Anthony daunted him on a much deeper level. “Most of the roles I’ve played in my career have been far removed from me,” he explains. “It’s very hard for me to go, ‘This is me. I’m playing myself.’” But Standen remembered advice he had received in drama class: if you’re scared of a role, you should play it. Fortunately, Standen’s friend is now in remission. “He’s a lot better now,” he says, “but it was terrifying at the time.” Standen’s hope for ‘Council of Dads’ is that it sparks real-time conversations within families and creates a platform where difficult, but important subjects can be broached. He believes that an open line of communication is key—not only to strong, inclusive families, but to raising the next generation as well. “It’s about communicating. There’s a lot of anxiety and depression and things that people are ashamed to talk about, and I think it’s important to vent by talking,” Standen notes. “And again [it comes back] to who shows up...about loving yourself and living in the moment,” he says with a grin. “All you can expect from perfection is a moment—so live that moment!” LOCALE MAGAZINE 47

“All you can expect from perfection is a moment, and if you look for anything more, you’re going to be disappointed, and I think human beings are the same. You can have many moments of perfection in any one day, but you have to look for them and appreciate them.” -Clive Standen

“I love the design process. Placing and replacing different designs until I’m happy with the final pattern takes hours and is so much fun. My absolute favorite part, though, is adding finish to the final product and seeing all of the grain come to life beneath the different finishes. My Patriarchy Portrait illustration and my Sunburst Mosaic are my favorites—I never tire of looking at them.”

“For us, making things provides a break from our hectic world. It’s an opportunity to unplug and truly enjoy the process— not just the end result. That’s what we’re really into; it’s not just going through the motions of making something, it’s experiencing each step of the process, both as an effort to improve your skills and to just zone out.”

The company uses natural, environmentally sustainable materials, such as bamboo, silk, organic cotton and vegan leather. Future materials may include hemp and agave. Hayling describes the overall theme as “feminine, effortless—that whole California ease with a Bohemian touch to it. We want to be known as being conscious of the environment, holistic living

and spirituality.” Odero describes the neutral white and soft, natural colors as “desert-esque and beachy,” reflecting the purity and spirituality of nature. They carry ready-to-wear selections for the everyday lifestyle. “Our signature piece is the kaftan,” says Hayling. “It’s very free-flowing and easy to wear, so many of our customers bring it when they travel. It’s very flattering to many body types.” They also offer pieces specifically designed for the individual, tailored to their measurements and perfect for special occasions like weddings or red carpet events. For the women who make the clothing, Hayling says, “It’s all about fair trade: making sure we’re paying a living wage, providing comfortable conditions with time off as needed.” For customers, the company offers retreats, yoga and community initiative activities.

1. “You will almost always catch me in a hat since I view hats as an extension of my personality. Janessa Leoné hats are the perfect accessory to edge up an outfit with the bonus of protection from the sun.” 2. “These effortlessly cool LOVE Binetti sundresses are colorful, flowy and playful, making it easy to switch from poolside to festival grounds.” 3. “The key to getting from stage to stage is a comfortable shoe. I love these Golden Goose Sneakers because they are an elevated take on the classics that work with dresses, skirts or cutoff shorts.” 4. “A jumpsuit, like the OVERLOVER jumpsuit, is like a blank canvas that allows you to style it in any direction: bold or simple. Keep it fresh by adding statement earrings from Robin Mollicone or a bandana from Ozma.” 5. “In a festival setting, it’s important to be able to transition from a hot day to a cool night. A La Prestic Ouiston duster gives you the versatility you need and is the best way to add that eye-catching finish.”

RINTS + PATTERNS

Palm Springs

Meet Candice Held, Fabric Design Guru

> Candice Held began by designing one-of-a-kind dresses made from recycled vintage scarves in 2001, and soon, celebrities like Beyoncé, Halle Berry and Britney Spears were among her clientele. It was difficult to keep up with the demand when her distribution grew to over 50 boutique accounts here and in Europe. She says, “Working with so many scarf prints and colors while designing my vintage line inspired me to begin designing my own silk scarf and textile prints.” Held and her husband relocated to Palm Springs from Los Angeles in 2013. She says that her designs “are inspired by the California desert and beyond.” Her limited-edition garments and accessories are handmade in California, using imported fabrics and silk scarves printed with her original textile designs. How does she create her products? “I’m always gathering inspiration—from nature to architecture to runway shows to movies and on and on,” Held explains. “When I design a new collection, first I put together a theme and a color palette. Next, I create original studio artwork elements by drawing and painting with gouache and watercolor.” Using those elements, she creates scarf and allover fabric layouts in Photoshop. She then sketches the silhouettes and assigns fabrics to be printed with each design. After that, she drapes, sews and creates patterns. “[My designs] come 100% from me,” she explains, adding that her vision is clear, beginning with the product and advancing to the boutique decor and the editorial campaigns for each collection. 68 LOCALE MAGAZINE

IT MIGHT LEAD MANY TO ASSUME THAT THE VIETNAMESE CRÊPE IS FRENCH TOO, BUT IT’S QUINTESSENTIALLY VIETNAMESE.

Double Dose • You can also experience Chef Gardner’s Asian cuisines at his sister restaurant, Roly China Fusion, which opened in fall 2019. Authentic Origins • 533 Viet Fusion was founded by Ahn Ho Rock, who fled Saigon in 1975. The name “533” refers to the US Navy ship that saved her and 300 refugees.

“We have traditional bún bò, mixed with pad thai, as well as a Japanese-style spring roll bar,” explains Chef Gardner. He also brings his own background in French cuisine, noting the heavy influence that colonization played in Vietnamese culture. “That’s where the original bánh mì came from,” he adds. “The French took traditional Vietnamese ingredients and threw them into a baguette.”

W

It might lead many to assume that the Vietnamese Crêpe is French too, but it’s quintessentially Vietnamese. Predating colonization by a few centuries, its origin is commonly traced to central Vietnam, later making its way to the streets and restaurants of Saigon.

The Vietnamese call the dish bánh xèo, which translates to “sizzling cake,” a reference to the sound of the batter hitting the hot surface of the pan. It’s a spectacular dish to observe both on the plate and in the kitchen as the chef simultaneously prepares the crêpe and the filling in separate woks. Chef Gardner describes his take as “traditional with minor variations.” The dish looks like an omelet, stretching the width of the plate, atop a bed of leafy greens. It’s a bright-yellow golden hue, just lightly browned. The filling of pork, tiger shrimp and sautéed vegetables bulges from the sides. It’s an exciting presentation, awakening the senses. There are multiple elements to savor. The pork is succulent and sweet with a hint of spice and a light Asian barbecue char. It’s marinated in lemongrass, tamari (a gluten-free soy alternative) and ginger; it’s then grilled, cut into slices and stir-fried. The tiger shrimp is briefly seared, maintaining its juicy texture. It’s all sautéed with bean sprouts, carrots and scallions—a bright medley of fresh vegetables—with just a hint of mint and citrus. You might think you’re on familiar ground with the crêpe, but it’s not egg-based. Instead, it’s a traditional mix of rice flour, coconut milk and turmeric. “Many restaurants buy packaged bánh xèo mix,” explains Chef Gardner. “We make our own daily. It’s fresh and adds a little more sponginess to the crisp texture.” It’s wafer-thin—crisp but soft— with a light, savory and earthy flavor.

Already full of flavor, the accompanying nuoc cham dipping sauce cranks things up further. It’s a fish sauce, which is infused with rice vinegar, garlic, red pepper and passion fruit purée. It’s thin and citrusy with an astute balance of sour, sweet and salty flavors as well as a light kick of spice. “Traditionally, you’d break it up into small pieces, wrap it in the leaf lettuce and dip it in the nuoc cham,” informs Chef Gardner. “A few of our customers do that, but most just eat it with a knife and fork, myself included.” While each part of the dish is a showcase in flavor, it’s a combination best taken as a whole. Get traditional, roll up your sleeves and get messy with it. With its unique presentation and approach, the Vietnamese Crêpe is as much a conversation piece as it is a meal. Indeed, the social element is half the fun at 533 Viet Fusion. The fast, casual vibe is set against Palm Springs modern decor and ambient music. The minimalist interior and rows of tables encourage interaction. With a bar and a spring roll counter in the same room, it’s lively and energetic. The full bar features an array of craft cocktails with drinks like the Guava Mojito and Thai Basil Lemon Drop, offering a perfect complement to the Vietnamese Crêpe. Other culinary favorites include the chile-braised ossobuco and the fried chicken, both armed with their own Vietnamese twists. But the Vietnamese Crêpe is its own unique experience that’s sure to wow you on your next culinary escapade to 533 Viet Fusion.

When it comes to bar-hopping in Palm Springs, the notion can be quite daunting. And while your squad may seem to know how to handle their booze, the night usually results in one too many vodka sodas. So the next time you plan on hitting Glitch for a beer and a game of Donkey Kong or Bootlegger Tiki for some rum-filled cocktails, make sure you’re fully equipped and ready to sip! Pack your bag with these four bar crawl essentials for a night you (might) never forget.

Rice and pasta: the two big carbohydrate components of so many dishes in so many cuisines. They may be common, but at the hands of a talented, creative chef, they can be used to create dishes that are truly uncommon. Chef Drew Davis of Catalan Mediterranean Cuisine in Rancho Mirage has created a menu full of outstanding dishes. Two of those offerings, the paella mixta and the black spaghetti and rock shrimp, represent both his talent and the rich versatility of rice and pasta.

• Black spaghetti gets its stunning ebony color and unique flavor from squid ink mixed into the pasta dough. According to Chef Davis, “It has a sort of salty, ‘oceany’ flavor.”

• Visually striking and distinctly delectable, this dish starts with black spaghetti imported from Italy and features rock shrimp, which has a sweet, succulent flavor and firm texture that’s similar to lobster; there’s also ‘nduja, a type of spicy, soft Italian pork salume. “They complement each other and work well with this pasta,” Chef Davis explains.

• The paella mixta is Chef Davis’ version of this classic Spanish dish. In addition to the traditional spices, such as saffron, Chef Davis says, “One thing that makes ours unique is our addition of smoked paprika.” With its enticing assortment of shellfish, chorizo and chicken, his delicious paella is exceedingly popular with Catalan’s patrons. 102 LOCALE MAGAZINE

THE RIGHT RICE

• For his paella, Chef Davis uses only Valencian Bomba rice imported from Spain. He says, “If you’re going to make authentic paella, you have to use the Bomba rice. I wouldn’t use anything else.”

Paella Mixta Ingredients: • Bomba Rice • Chorizo • Chicken • Calamari • Shrimp • Clams • Mussels • Clam Stock • Tomatoes • Peas • Garlic • Onions • Chives • Saffron • Paprika and Smoked Paprika • Piquillo Peppers

• Except for certain items like the octopus, which is imported from the Mediterranean Sea, Chef Davis says, “We want to get as many ingredients as possible locally, for freshness and quality.” The menu changes seasonally, depending on availability.

MORE THAN A MEAL • Chef Davis and the staff strive to create an atmosphere that makes coming to Catalan a social experience. Elements that contribute to this are the pleasant, intimate inner courtyard and the tapas bar.

RARE TREATS • Catalan has offerings unique in the area, including Spain’s Jamón Ibérico, recognized as the best ham in the world. Chef Davis jokes, “It’s like serrano ham on steroids.” And a real experience is their whole roasted suckling pig dinner.

Meet Lili Rodriguez, the New

FOR REEL, THOUGH Artistic Director of the Palm

Springs International Film Festival

WRITTEN BY: GENE PIETRAGALLO PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NATHAN COX

With a consistent explosion of artistic output in the Coachella Valley, the only forecastable climate for new and exciting local artistic endeavors is a skyrocketing increase, so long as the right minds are up for the task. Queue Lili Rodriguez; the newly appointed and youngest artistic director in the history of the Palm Springs International Film Festival! Rodriguez, who supervised the entirety of the 2020 PSIFF, was creating a buzz amongst the local art and film scene even before she hosted what was quite possibly the biggest event in the festival’s history. With the 2020 Palm Springs International Film Festival now in the rear-view mirror, the desert has time to reflect on the future of the festival and the Coachella Valley’s film and art scene as a whole.

LOCALE MAGAZINE 111

alive /// profile

“The Festival is a local favorite and a staple of the Coachella Valley. I myself am a local, so I’ve incorporated more local elements…” —Lili Rodriguez

As far back as she can think, Rodriguez has always been a film enthusiast, and chasing that passion has led her to an exceptional role in the industry. From graduating with a major in film studies at UC Irvine in 2008 to being appointed as the latest artistic director for the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Rodriguez has become a crucial organizer behind the Palm Springs International Film Society since first joining in 2014. 112 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Following her graduation from UC Irvine, Rodriguez returned to the Coachella Valley in order to pursue a career while staying close to her desert roots. Starting with a job as a projectionist at the Cinemas Palme D’Or in Palm Desert, Rodriguez’s depth in the local film community grew until she was hired as a guest relations assistant for the PSIFF in 2014. Several position changes and six years later, Rodriguez has become one of the youngest artistic directors in the history of the festival and has even raked in the highest number of film submissions throughout the history of the Palm Springs International Film Society. Rodriguez couldn’t have been appointed at a more critical time. With cinematic giants like Joker (for which Joaquin Phoenix won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actor) and Parasite (which made history with its multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture) creating global buzz beyond ordinary expectations, her first year on the job may have drawn one of the largest crowds yet for the PSIFF.

“Seeing everything finally come together is rewarding beyond expression,” says Rodriguez. “The entire team has worked so hard for months, and we finally get to enjoy the fruits of our labor.” PSIFF predecessors and contemporaries have only pushed for Rodriguez’s success. “The Festival needed a full-time employee that exclusively programmed, developed and operated Palm Springs International Film Society programs,” explains Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “Lili lives for film. The improved performance of ShortFest under her direction has been nothing short of remarkable.” The PSIFF has been a staple in local Coachella Valley history since its inception and enthusiastic promotion in 1989, and Rodriguez plans to expand upon that local inclusion with her new position. From putting an emphasis on student film screenings and internship programs through the Palm Springs International Film Society to showcasing three new films in a local

spotlight premiere during the festival, Rodriguez is keeping true to the history of local filmmaker admiration the Society has always been recognized for in its 30-plus years of existence.

A Good Cause • The PSIFF, a nonprofit organization, has a mission to “cultivate and promote the art and science of film through education and cross-cultural awareness.” For Reel? • After its inception in 1990, the PSIFF has established itself as the first stepping stone to the Academy Awards. Short and Sweet • PSIFF ShortFest, slated for June 16 of this year, is the largest short film festival in North America.

“The Festival is a local favorite and a staple of the Coachella Valley. I myself am a local, so I’ve incorporated more local elements: a local jury, expanding the local spotlight and inviting the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus for a special performance after for our Gayla presentation,” notes Rodriguez. “I think it is very important to have the community involved in the festival they love so much.” The amount of work and consideration that goes into a festival of this magnitude is unparalleled. From the Awards Gala to the yearlong submission process (which requires a dedicated team of reviewers), the PSIFF is no small feat. “The planning for this year’s Festival started almost immediately after [the Festival in] 2019,” Rodriguez notes. “Our programmers leave the Festival and start watching films for next year’s submissions.” Without question, the PSIFF is on course for a 2021 return with Rodriguez in her full directorial glory. In the meantime, film enthusiasts can look forward to ShortFest, an annual PSIFS event showcasing a collection of incredible short film submissions, slated to take place this June.

Rodriguez has become a crucial organizer behind the Palm Springs International Film Society since first joining in 2014.

At Lighthouse Dispensary in Palm Springs, the customer is met with a showroom of colorful packages lined and displayed for the consumer’s pleasure. Rattan chairs huddle together, ready to hear your innermost thoughts and secrets. They congregate beneath the eyes of cheerfully framed prints, setting the upbeat mood not far from the dispensary’s snug coffee bar, BluebirdDays. Beyond the “lux” factor, Davis thinks beyond the traditional dispensary mindset by creating a healthy relationship between the consumer and the health benefits surrounding cannabis. He says it’s not just about getting high; it’s about wellness and aiding clients with the best product for their everyday use. Customer service shines the brightest at Lighthouse. The reps are uniformed and armed with a refreshing casualness that makes them friendly and approachable. Lighthouse’s staff is prepared to give their clients the down-low like a homeroom teacher introducing sex ed. They welcome newbies and veteran users alike, flaunting everything from edibles, flowers, tinctures, CBD creams and even cannabisinfused beverages. The hope is to annihilate the negative preconceived notion that cannabis is for those showcased on the evening news. For Davis, the shop experience is more than just a high—it’s showing customers more than one shade of green and offering an experience that goes beyond a smoky haze. Although competition in the cannabis industry is skyrocketing in California, Davis is far from concerned. Lighthouse Dispensary is one of the leading cannabis retail chains in Southern California. By September 2020, customers can expect more than just a showroom. The magic begins with the opening of Lighthouse Dispensary’s lounge; the goal is to create recreational spaces where customers can either smoke or consume their choice of product in the heart of Downtown Palm Springs. For this budding industry, it’s all good vibes and high hopes.

• Palm Springs has changed—we don’t just mean the rainbow flags or the Instagram-worthy pink door, we’re talking about the blossom of a new industry: marijuana. And no, it’s not the kind you find in your brother’s sock drawer.

• The cannabis industry raked in $3.1 billion in 2019, and it’s forecast to rise to $7.2 billion by 2024. With such financial growth, it’s no wonder many entrepreneurs set their eyes on a budding opportunity and are dipping their hand into a newer, greener frontier.

Un-fore gettable THE STUNNING SILVERROCK GOLF COURSE IS A HOLE-IN-ONE

WRITTEN BY: GILES STUART PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: CHANNING BENJAMIN

We seldom get the chance to feel the lift of ascension into the heavens. At the slope of the Santa Rosa Mountains, however, whether you’re a pro or novice, teeing off at SilverRock golf course will make you feel as close to the sky as any champion. The horizon forms endlessly as you raise your gaze, blues interrupted only by the beautifully orchestrated landscape. A symphony of primary colors sings as your backswing proves your 9-iron a baton and you maestro to your own satisfaction.

...TEEING OFF AT SILVERROCK GOLF COURSE WILL MAKE YOU FEEL AS CLOSE TO THE SKY AS ANY CHAMPION.

Tucked in Nature • Headed by the team at Arnold Palmer Designs, the 7,239 yards over 200 acres offers golfers massive bunkers and stunning waterfalls, coupling the landscape’s seamless blend of fairways and native flora. Guests can retire in any of SilverRock’s 335 rooms between the Pendry and Montage hotels. For those seeking a more palatial sanctuary, the hotel also provides resort-style homes and condominiums for exclusive lodging. Midday solar refuge is available in the temporary clubhouse, and all new facilities are slated for completion in early summer 2021.

A Look Back in Time • For four years, SilverRock Resort served as home to the PGA’s Bob Hope Classic (2008-11). But, much like rookie Jhonattan Vegas claiming the final 2011 title, the course proved anything but sophomoric. Earning national recognition in 2005 from Golf Magazine as the only California course on their “Top 10 Courses That You Can Play” that year, along with Golf Week’s award for “Best Municipal Golf Course,” has no doubt helped to solidify the city of La Quinta’s title as “The Gem of the Desert.”

What’s to Come • SilverRock is making huge expansions by adding four-star and five-star luxury hotels in the construction of the Pendry and Montage, respectively. Expect new branded Pendry and Montage residences, a conference center, and a City of La Quinta venue site coming soon.

Cookin’ up Good Times

• The SilverRock Grill will offer a finedining experience with an unparalleled sense of tranquility. I’d ask, ‘Can you make a coffee table in a week?’ And he’d be able to whip it up! He’s so talented—it was the perfect combination for us to start a business like that.” Isles Interiors is not only a culmination of the couple’s talents and skill sets, but of their styles as well. “It’s so nice to design [pieces] together with the client’s input,” she shares. “It all works out really well.” “It’s fun to bring out a story for the client—whether it’s the room or the whole house, it just really has to flow,” she explains. To achieve that, Isles Interiors’ process relies on finding or creating one-of-a-kind pieces that tie it all together.

1. Have a good relationship with your client. 2. Map out your story and your plan. 3. Don’t deviate from the plan! 4. Find unique or custom pieces.

From Max’s conscious selection when it comes to materials to Maria’s enthusiasm for antique and reclaimed pieces, the couple is putting an environmentally friendly stamp on a style that is uniquely and completely theirs. “We mesh really well together,” Maria says. “It’s fun being creative with him!”

“When Brooks started in January...I was helping him with social media and background things,” Jenny explains. “But then we decided to do photoshoots of his projects to really build our portfolio.” Upon seeing outdoor furniture à la Home Depot paired with her husband’s stunning work, Jenny decided to pull everything out and stage it herself for the shoot. When the clients saw the decor transformation, they were amazed, making her “realize that there was a real niche

These High School Sweethearts Are Bringing Desert Dreams to Life Joshua Tree

For Sara and Rich Combs, what began as a cross-country road trip to escape the daily grind turned into a booming project, dedicated to helping others reconnect with themselves and with nature.

“without questioning it,” they bought The Joshua Tree House. While it originally began as a home for them to reset and work on their own projects, the Combs soon found success in listing their home as an Airbnb.

“We really fell in love with Joshua Tree on that trip,” Sara says. “After we went back [home] to New York, we kept thinking about how good it felt there, how creative we felt there with the open landscape.”

“We realized other people were craving a space like that as well,” Sara shares. “We eventually opened it up full-time for bookings, and then we fell in love with creating spaces for people where they can reconnect with nature and have that time to reset.”

The couple was drawn back to the California desert, and 130 LOCALE MAGAZINE

From there, the couple began renovating more spaces and taking on more projects, which has, in turn, shone a light on how they work together as a team. While both share a similar aesthetic, Rich is more detail-oriented, and Sara is more big-picture. “Even when we were [painting] in high school and college, Sara would always work with all these really big brushes and use her entire arm,” Rich explains. “Then I would come in with a very small brush and paint the little details.” While both their business and personal relationship sound worthy of a storybook, the journey hasn’t been without its obstacles. In 2019, the pair took on their largest and most challenging project yet: The Posada in Arizona. “We got this property in Tucson that was an old, abandoned inn, and we wanted to renovate it,” Sara shares. “It was the biggest space we’d ever done, and we just went for it because it felt perfect.” They soon found

A Nod TO MOD How Krys Melo Is Bringing Midcentury Design Into the Future WRITTEN BY: JORDAN NISHKIAN • PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: KRYS MELO

D

“During the time I was growing up, a lot of the TV shows and movies were starting to be based on the ‘50s and ‘60s, like Dirty Dancing and Cry-Baby, and I just fell in love with that whole style,” interior stylist and design consultant Krys Melo says. “I don’t know what it was about it, but it really resonated with me.” Midcentury modern design resonated so much with Melo that she and her husband decided to integrate the style into their daily lives—but their biggest project by far is renovating and restoring a 1958 Krisel in Rancho Mirage’s Tamarisk Ranchos Community.

Expert : Krys Melo Credentials: Interior Stylist and Design Consultant

The events leading up to the purchase of this home can only amount to chance. “When we went house shopping, we were just looking for something that had potential,” she explains. “We weren’t looking for a notable architect or a notable house or neighborhood.” After looking for about six months with no luck, she decided to finally scope out an open house for a listing that, no matter how many times she had scrolled past it online, kept popping up on her search results. That listing, with a confusing picture of a backyard facing the street, turned out to be exactly what she and her husband wanted.

T

“As soon as we pulled up, we got it. We fell in love with it,” she says. “The whole neighborhood is designated historic... and it’s a hidden gem! There are 16 houses and a courtyard, co-op style. The Marx Brothers lived here, the Sinatras lived here, famous producers all bought homes here, but we didn’t know that when we first came to see it!” The home still had some of its original character, but other than that, it had been stripped down and gone through a heavy ‘90s remodel. “So now we’re trying to peel all of those layers back and add more of the late-’50s character back into it,” Melo explains. While the remodels and restorations are still ongoing, Melo remains optimistic and passionate. Her big project this summer is the kitchen. “We are teaming up with a local cabinet-maker and our contractor to create our own spin on a traditional Krisel kitchen,” she notes. “So we’re pulling ideas from custom Krisel kitchens like the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway and other houses in the area. We’re trying to make it look really cool and cutting edge—what ‘cutting edge’ would have looked like [in the ‘50s].” “We keep joking that we’re bringing it back to ‘58, what ‘houses of the future’ looked like in ‘58,” Melo laughs. “But now, it’s accessible because we have smart homes and robotic vacuums and all these ideas that they had back then! So, we’re pulling all those ideas and bringing them into reality—it’s not just a concept anymore.” 136 LOCALE MAGAZINE

HOW TO BRING VINTAGE RESTORATION INTO THE 21ST CENTURY Krys Melo’s Tips for Balancing Old and New Finding the balance between old and new ultimately comes down to personal preference. Some homeowners may want to get rid of everything and start fresh, but this runs the risk of tearing down bits of history. Others may not touch anything at all, but this will make it difficult to keep the home technologically, ecologically and economically updated. While Melo is well aware that living in a “time capsule home” is not for everyone, there’s beauty to be found in the original foundations. “This is how you really live,” Melo explains. “You can still keep that midcentury style and all of [the] flair and the vintage touches, but still very much live in the now.” Here are Melo’s tips on how to restore a vintage home while keeping it fit for 2020:

F

Step 1:

• “Decide what’s important for you to keep, that way you know what to upgrade and what original features you want to restore a little better.”

Step 2:

• “Figure out how to work around [the features you want to keep]. We have a yellow vanity in one of our bathrooms—it’s not something I would’ve chosen, but I like that it’s original—so now I’m decorating around that to make it look intentional.”

Step 3:

• “We went around saying, ‘We don’t necessarily like this tile even though it’s original. Let’s start looking for era-appropriate tile to replace the old one so it doesn’t look out of place.’”

Step 5:

• “Windows in the ‘50s are cute, but they’re horrible for energy efficiency! We’re trying to make the home’s windows and doors look original while keeping energy efficiency and sustainability in mind.”

Step 6:

• “We’re trying to make the house as earth-friendly as possible. We’re also not throwing anything out—we’re donating and making sure nothing goes to waste.”

Step 7:

• “We’re doing little cosmetic DIY projects, like painting tile with epoxy paint or using car wrap on cabinetry, just to make everything fresh until the later stages of the remodel.”

Step 4:

• “We’re sourcing a lot of fixtures, tile and wallpaper that are new. We don’t have to try to find things that are vintage, but they still have that vintage flair. People get overwhelmed when they think they have to go to estate sales to find vintage styles, but there are a lot of companies that are bringing those styles back.”

“You can still keep that midcentury style and all of [the] flair and the vintage touches, but still very much live in the now.” —Krys Melo

THIS SOCAL COMPANY IS SHAPING THE ART OF POTTERY AS WE KNOW IT WRITTEN BY: DIEGO E. GAXIOLA PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NIKI CRAM Founded over 45 years ago, ARCHPOT is a family-owned small business behind the design and creation of breathtaking fire and water features and gorgeous pottery, found in a multitude of locations around the country. “Something a lot of people don’t know, being a smaller family business, is that we are in some pretty well-known hot spots. The Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Fashion Island and Pelican Hill in Orange County and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC,” explains ARCHPOT’s General Manager Tim Hall. An Orange County local, Hall, reminisces of his humble beginnings, detailing how the company transformed from a wholesale nursery to a highlyreputable manufacturer.

F

Thinking back to his childhood, Hall states, “I have always been creative and originally wanted to become an architect.” After Hall and his family moved from Mission Viejo to Tustin, he began to shadow his father, immersing himself in the art of pottery creation and familiarizing

himself with the challenges often faced when running a business. “The family business started off with plants—we were a wholesale nursery. Later came the marriage of plants and imported pottery, creating Architectural Pottery in 1989,” he says. Hall attributes a lot of his creativity to others’ creations on social media. “People inspire me. I like to see what is out there, and I ask myself how I can do better. How can I put a product out there that people will want in their home or business space?” In 2019, 30 successful years later, the family decided to rebrand the company, unveiling the name ARCHPOT. “Of course, in every family business, there are challenges. Any challenge we have had has resulted in growth,” explains Hall. With the continued expansion of the company, Hall and his team are able to focus on delivering products that truly distinguish themselves from others in the market. From the material and finish process to ARCHPOT’s utilization of high-tech and lightweight cement, the company is constantly striving to create products that exemplify expert craftsmanship. Overseas Inspiration • When Hall was just 17, he took a trip to Greece where he watched handthrown pottery being shaped. It was at that moment he realized the creation of pottery was indeed an art form. In the Works • Currently, ARCHPOT is working on custom Belize fire tables for the historic Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. “We are taking such pride in this project because of the historic location.”

To state that midcentury modern design is highly esteemed in the Coachella Valley falls under the category of “Duh.” As any truly fine specimen of midcentury modern architectural design should, the home at 70684 Placerville Road in Rancho Mirage beautifully exploits all of the attributes of this desert valley that make it such a desirable place to live and vacation. It is currently on the market for an asking price of $2,588,000. Built in 1957, this midcentury modern home is the epitome of minimally elegant desert living. It was designed by Joseph Pawling, a master builder who was well-known in the Coachella Valley, designing and building many noteworthy homes in the area, primarily in the 1950s.
