Glamping Sleep Under the Stars in Style

editor's note I need a vacation. There—I said it. Yes, I’m working from home in my pajamas with my dog on my lap, so no, I don’t really neeeed one. But my gosh, I want one! And during a year like this, we all deserve to get the heck out of town. After six-plus months of being cooped up along with several disastrous events, 2020 is starting to feel like a monster under the bed that won’t stop spooking me. Unfortunately, life doesn’t come with a fast-forward button, so we’re forced to befriend that roommate monster. Now hear me out, I’m no Debbie Downer; I don’t want to dwell on the faults of 2020. After all, the holiday season is officially in full swing, and there is nothing more enchanting than a warm bite of pumpkin pie, the sound of a crackling fire and that cheerful feeling of togetherness. And if you’re anything like me, I love to be home for the holidays— but this year just feels different. So we’ve pieced

together an issue packed to the brim with some of the most splendid staycation spots in SoCal. From cozy cabins and waterfront resorts to glamping getaways and dreamy desert retreats, this guide is sure to turn you into the ultimate escape artist. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find an assortment of holiday gifts for everyone on your list. Whether it’s a new watch for dad (pg. 78), snazzy jewels for mom (pg. 60 & 62) or toys for the tots (pg. 84), this guide has it all. Adorning the cover of this issue is master illusionist Zach King, who dives deep into his humble beginnings and how he works his magic. Prepare for some smoke and mirrors, my friends! (pg. 40) Wherever you find yourself this season—home or away—I hope this issue tickles your travel bug and sparks a sense of joy. Southern California is truly a special place, and despite this year’s many trials, we can always be thankful for where we live. Cheers!

Zach King is a man of mystery. With a handful of illusions up his sleeve for the LOCALE cover shoot at Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa Rancho Mirage, we weren’t sure what this digital creator would pull out of his metaphorical hat. Turns out, he truly is the “king” of illusions. Under the (Cocktail) Umbrella • The team decided to try to beat the Palm Springs heat by starting off at the pool. In bright green Mr. Turk trunks and a cashmere hoodie, King lounged around with a huge smile on his face and cocktail in hand. “The direction I got from the mood board, which I loved, was very colordriven,” says wardrobe stylist Neil Cohen. “The poolside look was too cool—the clothing gave it this youthful, playful and fun edge.” Mirror Mirror • Dressed in a GUCCI corduroy jacket, King played around with three different mirrors and thus, three different versions of himself. “Our favorite setup of the shoot was the cover shot with the three mirrors,” says co-photographer Joe Magnani. “We liked that it was not only a technical challenge to shoot, but that it was a chance for us to collaborate with Zach and the staff at LOCALE.” House of Cards • With picturesque views of the desert from King’s penthouse, the team set up for the last look of the day. Building a house from a deck of oversized cards, King posed in a purplehued suit. “The ‘side stripe’ by BJ Gray was by far my favorite look of the day. It feels modern with a hint of magician in there,” says King with a smile. Written By: Lauren Lewellen

3 REASONS I LOVE WORKING AT THE LIVING DESERT ZOO AND GARDENS:

RESIDENT OF: Palm Desert

1. We have a top-notch and educated team. 2. I love watching little kids have their first encounter feeding giraffes. 3. After a long day, I have the whole place to myself!

LOCAL LIVING: 7 years

GETTING BACK UP

“We started 2020 by celebrating our 50th anniversary and opening our new Australian Adventures [exhibit] only to have the pandemic knock the air out of us. But we caught our breath, regrouped and found a way to move forward with our mission of desert conservation.”

OFF TO THE ZOO

Ò The Living Desert is a world-class conservation organization and a cultural jewel right here in the Coachella Valley. There is nothing better than an early morning walk through the gardens, watching the desert animals. The Living Desert also manages 1200-plus acres of wilderness nature reserve behind the zoo, which has several hiking trails with different levels of difficulty.

DEDICATED TO THE JOB

Ò I have spent my entire career as a conservation biologist working to share my love of animals and the pressures the natural world is under with the public. At The Living Desert, more than 100,000 school-aged kids get to hear that message every year. My hope is that they will grow up and make good decisions about the use of natural resources and protect natural habitats. www.livingdesert.org

SUGAR, SUGAR

Ò When I have time for more than lunch at my desk, I like to push my Toyota Supra through its paces on the curves of Hwy 74 and go up the hill to get some of the best barbeque brisket this side of Texas. Jalapeño cornbread and freshly made pies from The Sugarloaf Cafe will twist your arm to give up the keto diet. www.thesugarloafcafe.com

SEE YOU AT SEYMOUR’S

THIS YEAR HAS TAUGHT ME…

We have to be willing to change on a dime; you have to be openminded and willing to change to keep up with what’s around us. It’s been a crazy but rewarding year where we’ve recreated, rebranded and grown stronger.

DIG IN

Ò Palm Springs’ Rooster and The Pig is an industrial-style eatery that serves fresh Vietnamese-American dishes with amazing flavors. The owner and staff are great! I supported them during the pandemic because the restaurant is usually hard to get into because it’s small with limited seating.

RISE AND SHINE (AND EAT)

Ò Cheeky’s in Palm Springs is my go-to spot for a decadent breakfast. Grab a seat on the patio and order the custard cheesy scrambled eggs or the buttermilk and fresh corn pancakes with blueberries. COMMUNITY LOVE

Our community has shown up for us in incredible ways during the pandemic. The overarching lesson from 2020 is that change is really the only thing we can count on. FOR ZACH KING , IT ALL STARTED WITH KITTENS WIELDING LIGHTSABERS. Before he rocketed to fame as an acclaimed Internet creator, a pioneer in the art of “digital sleight of hand” and the third-most-followed account on TikTok, King was creating tutorials for the editing software Final Cut Pro.

The year was 2011; King had managed to build a loyal following on YouTube, dispensing tips of the trade in the area of visual effects. “People started asking me to make little short films before my tutorials as a demo to see...the effect in context,” says King. This particular week, the lesson at hand was a lightsaber effect, and King saw an opportunity present itself in the form of a pair of kittens his roommate had recently adopted. He whipped up a 15-second video in which the two felines engaged in an acrobatic, Star Wars-inspired battle, titled it “Jedi Kitties,” and uploaded it to YouTube. The next morning, King was awoken by a call from his parents; the video had amassed over three million views and was being featured on “Good Morning America.” Zach King had officially gone viral—and it certainly wouldn’t be the last time.

T

Rewind to the mid-1990s, when King was growing up in Portland, Oregon. Born to a father of Chinese descent and a half-Austrian, halfNicaraguan mother, King and his three sisters were homeschooled and encouraged to follow their “extracurricular” passions from a young age. King developed an interest in filmmaking at the age of seven, inspired by making-of specials featured on his favorite VHS tapes. “I would watch how they made the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park or how they created E.T. via animatronics,” recalls King. “The fun of making movies was the tactile element. We had a farm to play on, and I’d do pyrotechnics and explosions for my little movies.” Enlisting his sisters to operate the cameras and boom, King continued his cinematic experiments until graduating high school. He applied to Biola University’s film school, only to be rejected. He sat in on classes but felt unchallenged and started posting on various filmmaking forums. Soon, he developed

a business model to create his tutorials, setting him on the path that led to the kittens, the lightsabers and, ultimately, success. Fast forward back to 2011, where an emboldened King was pondering his next move. “The question posed was: ‘Can I do this again?’” states King. “I got into a rhythm of making a video every Friday and... that launched me into my first YouTube career path.” By 2013, King’s videos were regularly racking up tens of millions of views on YouTube, and that’s when a new platform emerged, quickly developing an intensely passionate following—Vine. King was immediately taken with the nascent video app’s “categories” feature, which allowed him insight into which niche his content fit into. Says King, “I couldn’t do comedy or animals or crafts, but...I saw this tab that said visual effects and magic and thought, ‘I can do that.’” And that is precisely what King specializes in: a synthesis between filmmaking and magic with a focus on optical illusions, drawing inspiration from early silent filmmakers like George Méliès, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. King waxes: “They were doing mattes, clones, jump cuts... those early, short nickelodeons are reminiscent of the work I did on Vine.” Indeed, utilizing Vine’s six-second time limitation to his advantage, King honed his craft and pared down his content. “It forced me to sharpen the idea,” states King. “I challenged myself to create one video per day for 30 days, and by the end of that time...I had almost as many followers on Vine as I did on YouTube.” But just as King was hitting his stride on Vine, the platform flatlined, ultimately being discontinued by Twitter in late 2016. For King, however, this came as no surprise: “There was no way to monetize on Vine...and at the time, I was building my team and hiring a staff. Snapchat and Instagram were getting big at the time, so eventually the audience just wasn’t there anymore.”

43 LO C A L E M AG A Z I N E

AROUND THE WORLD •In 2016, King and wife Rachel Home competed in “The Amazing Race 28,” a season specifically featuring online creators. He placed sixth in the overall standings.

FAMILY MATTERS •King’s eldest son Nathan was adopted, and since then, he has become a major proponent of foster care. In fact, King plans on fostering another child soon, stating, “People say it takes a saint, but anyone can do it.”

JUST PLANE AWESOME •After becoming obsessed with radiocontrolled airplanes in college, King eventually graduated to the real thing, earning his pilot’s license to fly a singleengine Cessna.

UNDER THE SEA •One of King’s favorite hobbies is free diving for lobsters off the cliffs of Malibu, venturing out at 11 p.m. on winter nights to scour the tides for crustaceans.

“SOMETIMES IT’S GOOD TO BE GIVEN BOUNDARIES… THE THEME YOU’RE CREATING FOR CAN BE A SPRINGBOARD FOR REALLY FUN IDEAS.” —ZACH KING

It was around this time that King signed up for a little-known app known as musical.ly, which was mostly home to lip-synching videos. Though King’s clever VFX illusions weren’t exactly a perfect fit for the new platform, he was charmed by how much fun its users appeared to be having. As the years went on, musical.ly rebranded as TikTok, and it eventually became a bonafide force to reckon with in the digital arena with King leading the charge as one of its most inventive personalities. “There’s a bit of ‘early adopter’ benefit there,” admits King. “But... TikTok’s algorithm is great for letting us know which content is interesting enough to go out to more people, then expanding it to a bigger audience.”

I

As with Vine, King came to relish the limitations imposed by TikTok’s 15-second time limit, and its reliance on timely trends. “Sometimes it’s good to be given boundaries,” muses King. “The theme you’re creating for can be a springboard for really fun ideas.” One of King’s personal favorites of his recent TikToks employed a “Narnia effect” to transport King, as well as his wife Rachel and their two children, seamlessly from one location to another. Per King, “We start off in the living room in a blanket fort, then I pull off the back sheet, and when we go through, we’re on this mountaintop in Lake Arrowhead.” Despite resembling an impressive digital effect, the teleportation was created practically, as King built an identical blanket fort set on top of the mountain to accomplish the uninterrupted match cut. King considers this brand of project to be an extension of filmmaking, but as someone who practiced magic in high school, he can also see tendrils of that discipline in his work. “The audience will sometimes call this magic,” says King, “but I don’t know if a kid today would be able to see the difference between what I do and what David Copperfield does. It’s about the sense of wonder they get out of it.” If it seems King is interested in the perspective of his youngest fans, it’s no coincidence, as he admits that his entire creative process was altered by the arrival of his kids. “At their ages now—three and a half and two and a half—they’re starting to become conscious, and they believe all these amazing,

crazy things,” he recalls. “I really want them to believe in themselves. That sense of imagination has translated into my videos... Early in the writing process, it’s easy to say ‘no, we can’t do this.’ But having kids has allowed me to say ‘yes’...and it’s led to some of my best ideas.” Clearly, King has found an incredible outlet for his creativity on TikTok, along with nearly 100 million other users in the United States. In recent months, however, the platform has become a lightning rod for controversy over the way its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, handled secure data. Citing privacy concerns, President Donald Trump ordered ByteDance to find a US-based buyer for TikTok or face being forcibly shut down. TikTok was then spared in the nick of time after entering a partnership with tech giant Oracle and Walmart. But amidst this chaos, King remains unhindered. “I see it with tunnel vision,” he reports. “I’ve seen apps go through these seasons of controversy...but as a creator, you find ways to connect with your audience in ways that aren’t dependent on any one app.” In recent years, King has also attempted to elevate other Asian voices in the online creator community. Early in his own journey, King was taken out for burritos by famed, “first-wave” YouTuber Freddie Wong, who offered some much-needed direction along the path to a sustainable career. “Since then, [I like] finding ways to mentor people with a similar cultural background and guiding the next generation of storytellers,” states King. But what’s next for King himself? When asked whether he’d consider moving into traditional models of media like feature films, he remains circumspect: “When I got out of film school, my dream was to make something for the big screen. Now I make things for the smallest screens...the goal then was to reach the largest possible audience, and that was how it was done. The model is evolving, but what I want to do as a filmmaker is still to connect with the viewer in an emotional way.” With TikTok’s future no longer in jeopardy, and King reaching the heights of his creative powers, it appears likely that the gatekeepers of the film industry may end up needing him more than he’ll ever need them.

Grab Your Clubs! It’s Time to Par-Tee WRITTEN BY: KAYLIN WAIZINGER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: PARK HYATT AVIARA RESORT, GOLF CLUB & SPA ILLUSTRATIONS BY: VICENTE MARTÍ SOLAR

Perched above the Batiquitos Lagoon sits the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa, a sophisticated Spanish-colonial escape spanning across 200 acres. This luxury Carlsbad resort celebrated a grand reopening in October following an over $50 million renovation, debuting a variety of fresh dining concepts, two transformed pool areas, reimagined guest rooms and more. There’s no doubt—$50 million certainly buys a lot. But even before the property’s revival, the Park Hyatt Aviara’s Arnold Palmer-designed, 18-hole golf course stole the show. And let it be known: it still does. The Aviara Golf Club features a memorable layout of par 72 over 18 holes and is uniquely sculpted around rolling hillsides, lush greenery and distinctive bunker and water challenges. The course meanders through a

beautiful botanical garden with cascading waterfalls, native wildflowers and tiered rock formations. Take your eyes off the scenery for a hot sec and you’ve got yourself an exciting and challenging course with nearly 300 feet of elevation change! Like other Arnold Palmerdesigned courses, the Aviara Golf Club offers golfers a tough yet fair course to play on. The tree-lined fairways are near perfect with most having some slope, contour or undulation. Challenge yourself with a series of uphill and downhill shots into well-guarded greens or take a risk with the course’s several birdie opportunities! After the round, you and your crew can retreat to the resort’s two-story clubhouse with locker services, a bar lounge and the decadent Argyle Steakhouse with outdoor balcony seating. Golf novice or not, it doesn’t get much better than this.

On Air • Chef Anthony Copley, his wife Juliana, and his son host live-stream cooking classes and tutorials every Thursday night via Your Dirty Apron. Viewers can comment or ask questions in real time, and he uses simple tools to create dishes accessible to everyone regardless of experience.

—Chef Copley of flavors ready to warm your soul and lift your spirits. “As you put your fork into the creamy corn, you get the grainy polenta texture mixed with the sweet corn flavor. Then the scallops are like silk topped with chunky tomato,” he explains. Cutting into the seared scallops is like cutting into butter. The paradox of delicate and rich with a subtle sweetness is mind-blowing. It’s impossible not to devour each tender morsel. The scallops don’t require much in preparation, only a bit of salt and pepper. The secret is how it’s seared; timing is everything. It’s the difference between light and silky and something not so palatable.

Below the Surface • Copley took three years off from being a chef to teach scuba diving. He worked for surf/lifestyle brand, Quicksilver, in the Great Barrier Reef.

nestled in Old Las Palmas, Palm Springs against the backdrop of the Santa Rosa Mountains. With an acre of outdoor dining space, it's the perfect place to dine, unwind and spend time yearround, even amidst a pandemic.

The distinctively elegant cuisine is marinated in a laid back "aloha" vibe, culminating in a casual gourmet affair. In other words, it’s fine dining without the overcoat. Owner and award-winning Executive Chef Andrew Manion Copley masterfully curates each meal. His distinguished culinary style is rooted in French cuisine and blended with profound influence in Pacific Island flavors. 104 LOCALE MAGAZINE

As part of Cary Grant’s former estate, guests experience the ultimate mix of old Hollywood desert charm and upscale dining. Although limited indoor dining in California has been permitted since September, Copley’s continues to utilize their outdoor space and keep the inside off-limits. “Inside only seats 50 people, and that’s without social distancing. We can do 150 outside,” Chef Copley explains. The massive outdoor dining area is a rare perk for any restaurant, leaving plenty of space to have a socially distanced meal. Aromas of spices and herbs hover in the air, tempting your senses and creating an atmospheric celebration of culinary euphoria. Diners can enjoy intimate dinners, host an event or hang out by the fire pit. Chef Copley has a varied and worldly background in food. His menu items are a showcase of the collection of influences from his travels. One of his favorite subjects to work with is seafood. A seasonal favorite is the scallop plate—a unique merging

The mushroom vinaigrette’s earthy essence complements the sweet puréed corn. The creamy corn is reminiscent of polenta, but only on the surface. Ginger gives this sweet purée a warm and welcomed depth. The dressing is a blend of local mushrooms, garlic and mustard, mixed with parsley, chives, basil and tarragon. Both are the kind of unusual pairings that Chef Copley excels in, bringing an unexpected balance to the plate. Garlic and ginger is one of his favorite combos. “It’s rare for me not to use garlic and ginger; you can ask anyone who knows me,” he says. Many things separate Copley’s scallop plate from others, including tarragon. He believes it is an underutilized herb in the world of food, making it precisely the kind of surprise element he likes to mix in. Hints of garlic and black licorice round out the robust flavor in the plump tomato relish. Copley encourages a glass of white wine, such as sauvignon blanc, to complement his seared scallops and also suggests it be enjoyed as an appetizer. “Once you have all the flavors going, the mushroom vinaigrette kicks off your saliva glands and gets you ready for your next dish,” he says. Creating such dynamic plates has become second nature to Chef Copley. “I still read a lot of cookbooks and dig into archives, then I tweak the old recipes and create new ones. It’s refreshing,” he says. Following his culinary curiosities worldwide has given him a rare perspective on preparing foods and crafting new recipes. His adventurous persona is reflected in his innovative flavor pairings and tasted in every dish.

La Quinta FOOD • Traditional seasonings and sauces pair perfectly with the authentic homestyle preparation.

On Sept. 15 in the heart of Old Town La Quinta, TQLAS Agave Bar & Grill opened her doors, offering an authentic taste of Mexico. “Mexico is such a vibrant culture with its colors, art, drinks and food,” says co-owner Nancy Prieto. “We want to bring that feel and taste to Old Town.” The new establishment doubles as an agave bar, specializing in tequila and mezcal craft cocktails. With over 75 100% agave tequilas and 20+ mezcals, there is no shortage of something to sip on. Each drink is even served in a beautiful hand-blown glass from Guadalajara!

DECOR • Upbeat, adobestyle setting showcasing regional Mexican art with an extensive and vibrant outdoor patio.

For eight years, Nancy and her husband Sebastian Prieto owned and operated a successful restaurant/bar in Rosarito Beach, Mexico. “I am originally from Mexico City, and my wife fell in love with my culture,” says co-owner Sebastian. They spent time in Oaxaca, Veracruz, Acapulco, Puerta Vallarta, Guadalajara and many other cities and states. But after moving to the Coachella Valley, the pair decided to expand on their experiences abroad, eventually opening TQLAS.

PRICE • Entrees range from $15-$22, but the daily happy hour (3-6 p.m.) offerings are a total steal!

In It Together • Edward and Eleanore Weiner’s original store was named Leeds, which was created by combining the first two letters of both of their names. In 1981, they retired and sold their company to their son, Terry Weiner, who has since taken the business to new levels.

As the president and CEO of Leeds & Son, Terry Weiner often begins his day before the sun comes up. For example, an auction in Monaco that features rare watches can be part of his schedule. “High-end watchmaking is on par with fine automobile manufacturing or fine art,” according to Weiner, who serves as one of six US ambassadors for the “Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie,” a Swiss organization that promotes and serves the art of watchmaking. “I hope my legacy will help to cement the next 73 years.” —Terry Weiner

116 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Weiner’s early influence in the jewelry business began with his parents, Edward and Eleanore Weiner. “They started their first store near what is now Laughlin, Nevada,” he remembers. “My father worked on the dam, and my mother set up a little store along the Colorado River. That was right after World War II.” The store name Leeds came about by combining the first two letters of both parents’ names. His parents eventually owned jewelry stores in California and Arizona, and as a college student, he worked in a jewelry store to offset his expenses. “One year, while visiting my parents in Palm Springs, my father became ill,” he explains. “I agreed to stay and work for them until he recovered. I only agreed to stay for 60 days. Somehow, that turned into 40 years!” Weiner purchased Leeds & Son from his parents when he was young. “I never thought of myself as a CEO until the company grew into a much larger business. When we grew into a multi-store group, my responsibilities and skill sets were forced to evolve.” He says that as a CEO, the duties are

clearly defined, and that it’s a pretty simple formula: “You do anything and everything to succeed and take care of your employees and clients.” Their mission was to evolve into a company that sells the highest-quality gems and timepieces with integrity and fair value. “We strive to be the leaders in professionalism and innovation,” he adds. When asked about what has been most rewarding about his career, Weiner responds, “Honestly, it’s still the sense of being part of the community fabric. There are many generations of Leeds & Son clients.” He explains that there are some families in the Coachella Valley with four generations that continue shopping at Leeds & Son. “In 2018, I sold my other stores to one of the largest jewelry companies in Switzerland,” says Weiner. “I excluded Leeds & Son from the sale because I wanted to keep our original store independent and continually in family hands.” Weiner is enthusiastic about the store’s new look. “In the summer of 2021, our El Paseo store will undergo a complete remodel. While many brick-andmortar stores are closing or stagnant, we are excited about elevating the shopping experience.” Weiner and his family have been continually operating a retail store in the Coachella Valley for 73 years. “I hope my legacy will help to cement the next 73 years,” he states. What is Leeds & Son forecasting for new jewelry and watch trends? Weiner says, “We are known more for merchandising classics and not fads. Therefore, we focus on extreme quality and ageless style.” And what should a person look for when looking for a jeweler or deciding where to buy their next watch? “Integrity, longevity and knowledge,” he concludes. “Reputations are earned, cultivated and tirelessly protected.”

Extended Stay? Yes, Please! •Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal offers a fantastic alternative for those that would rather work on a patio in Mexico than at the dining room table. Stay a week or longer and get a 30% discount, or stay for a full month and get a week for free!

Speak the Language •Most of us know how to say the basic Spanish greetings. If you want to learn more about the Mexican culture, however, Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal offers a Spanish Baja Cultural Immersion package. Participate in three 90-minute Spanish classes and learn about Mexican traditions! Educational Support •The resort is bringing virtual educational programming to guests by partnering with national tutoring service, TakeLessons. Your personal concierge can help arrange a virtual meeting with a dedicated education guide to develop a custom program that meets the needs and goals of the student. Be sure to take advantage of programs like private tutoring, live and pre-recorded classes, kids activities, virtual field trips and adult guest-only classes!

My wife and I love adventure, travel and discovering new places and cultures. Fortunately, we have visited dozens of countries around the globe over the past decade and typically spend our free time planning our next escape. I found myself wondering several times over the past six months if we would ever travel again; it was a constant source of consternation. The decision to travel, once we were able to, did not come easy. We weighed numerous factors, including the flight’s length, availability of direct flights and how safe we would feel once we arrived. Over the years, Mexico has been our most frequent destination. We decided to make Cabo San Lucas the destination for our first vacation since the pandemic began for a few different reasons: the short (two-hour) direct flight, the fact that we had both been learning Spanish and—mostly—our love for the food, culture and people of Mexico. From the moment we landed until the time we left, we knew we had made the right decision. We arrived home feeling safe, rested and ready to plan our next excursion.

Test Your Courage •Looking to make the most of your trip? The resort offers a variety of curated experiences, such as swim classes with a whale shark, snorkeling with a sea lion and surf lessons!

5 MUST-TRY RESTAURANTS: El Farallon •Enjoy a tasting flight of champagne paired with sea salts from the cliffside Champagne Bar. Dig into a romantic five-course dinner while watching the sky change colors and listening to the waves crash below.

Acre •A full hour’s drive north and off a mile-long dirt road, we found Acre—a beautiful property lined with treehouses, rescued animals and modern bohemian elegance.

SUR Beach House •SUR serves the best sushi we have ever had. There is a beach club where you can rent chairs and swim with beautiful views of the Arch of Cabo San Lucas.

Don Manuel’s •The main restaurant at Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal has amazing views, great food and entertaining live music at night. A “mesero” made sure to stop at our table each time we dined to teach us a few Spanish words! but nothing we saw looked like the place we would find ourselves at: our magnificent resort.

We rented a car when we landed and made the 45-minute drive south through the desert to Downtown Cabo San Lucas. We had visited Cabo San Lucas many times before but had never stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, where we would be staying for the next five nights. As we listened to our navigation, we were guided on a series of lefts and rights that took us through the heart of downtown. There were casinos and nightclubs (mostly closed) along with restaurants (mostly open),

W

We arrived at the resort’s gate and saw nothing but a mountain. Where was the hotel? The guard checked his list, found our name and instructed us to drive through the mountain. We drove hundreds of yards through a tunnel that was lit by dozens of chandeliers. It cut straight through the mountain, leaving the city noises behind and transporting us to a side of Cabo we did not know existed. In front of us was 24 acres of beachfront property framed by the Pacific’s beautifully blue waters. We had arrived.

Talay •This tiny Thai food trailer might seem out of place in a posh resort like the Montage Los Cabos, but sitting at picnic tables under the lights was an ideal date night.

Worth the Flight •With fast Wi-Fi, multi-bedroom casitas, complimentary breakfast, a private chef dining experience and more, there are so many reasons to visit Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal.

We had booked the Estrella Suite on the fourth floor at Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal. Before we could checkin, we secured our masks, had our temperatures checked and then were escorted to our room, which was sealed with a notice that it had been cleaned properly according to the Hilton CleanStay guidelines. Our host made sure to point out (without touching a thing) that all surfaces had been cleaned—from the TV remote to the light switches—immediately reassuring our safety and health.

“We left feeling stressed and returned feeling blessed.”

The Estrella Suite has a living room, dining room, bedroom, an enormous bathroom with a soaking tub and a private dip pool. I knew by looking at my wife that she was thinking what I was thinking: we may not have to leave our room at all. Adding to this sentiment was the fact that they offered room service breakfast in the pool on a floating raft, supplied a new bottle of tequila each day, and you could see the waves breaking on the sand from every corner of our suite. We left feeling stressed and returned feeling blessed. After six months of solitude, the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal proved to be exactly what we needed. We felt safe during our entire trip, cared for by the staff and cannot wait to return. We are so happy to feel safe traveling again.

WESTERN CHIC MEETS BOHEMIAN BLISS AT THE DESERT YACHT CLUB IN YUCCA VALLEY

WRITTEN BY: KAYLIN WAIZINGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY: TAE KWON, THE DESERT YACHT CLUB AND AIRBNB

Why camp when you can glamp?! Yucca Valley’s Desert Yacht Club offers adventurers a whimsical escape with an eclectic mix of vintage art installations, dreamy desert landscapes and a rustic, Western feel. Whether you’re looking for a remote spot to unwind with your s/o or you’re on the hunt for the picture-perfect photo op, this bohemian abode is here to make all your daydreams come true. Forget your air mattress and your flimsy tent—glamp the day away under the warm Yucca Valley sun!

WESTERN ELEGANCE • Owned and operated by artist Alessandro Giuliano, the Desert Yacht Club’s ambiance is a fusion of Western-chic decor and Italian style. With art installations throughout, you’re sure to fall in love with the campsite’s vintage vibe. Throughout the space, you’ll also find funky furniture pieces, such as a cushioned daybed built with wood pallets, an outdoor bar, patterned couches and a mirrored glass egg that reflects light in all directions. A rustic Airstream along with teepee-style tents serve as spots to rest,

while two boats sit perched on a desert ridge, offering guests a place to enjoy a cool breeze as the sun dips behind the mountains.

THE ADVENTURE IS YOURS • The DYC is not simply a place to stay, but a place to explore. With so many nooks and spots to hang, it’s easy to make it feel like home! Pack some booze and practice your mixology at the bar or take a dip in the aboveground pool. Glamping with friends? Snap photos on the boat or pull up some chairs around the campfire. It’s what you make it!

Meet the Hosts • The DYC is home to one furry and one feathered friend: Pippo the black cat and a rascally roadrunner named Elvis, who’s frequently caught stealing Pippo’s kibbles. Picture-Perfect • The Desert Yacht Club is a popular destination for filming movies and music videos. Playboy once did a shoot here as well! On-Screen Inspo • The boat installation is dedicated to Fitzcarraldo, a movie written and directed by Werner Herzog. His wacky and unusual adventure is what inspired the name for Giuliano’s DYC project.

OFF-THE-GRID

L

• Love the idea of getting lost? Well, you just might. The Desert Yacht Club certainly lies off the beaten path, giving guests the benefit of absolute privacy and dark night skies— perfect for stargazing. Most everything on the property is solar-

powered, while propanefueled lanterns illuminate the tents and trailers. If you’re a “need-towatch-Netflix-in-airconditioning” kind of person, then this off-grid oasis may not be for you. If you’re looking for inspiration or a secluded escape, however, the Desert Yacht Club is the place to be!

The Proper Perspective •indiGO CEO Kelly Wolf says, “We try to look at everything from our clients’ point of view. When you do that, it makes it really easy to make good decisions that are beneficial for both the customer and the company.”

NOW CELEBRATING THEIR 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY, INDIGO AUTO GROUP WAS FOUNDED IN 2010 BY TODD BLUE IN HOUSTON, TEXAS. THE COMPANY THEN ACQUIRED DESERT EUROPEAN MOTORCARS (DEM) IN 2013. OVER THE YEARS, THE COMPANY HAS EXPANDED AND UPGRADED THE DEM CAMPUS IN RANCHO MIRAGE, HAS ACQUIRED OTHER DEALERSHIPS AND RECENTLY CELEBRATED THE GRAND OPENING OF THEIR NEW PORSCHE SHOWROOM IN PALM SPRINGS. ALL THEIR FACILITIES ARE STATE-OF-THE-ART, AND THEY’VE ADDED MORE BRANDS TO THE ORIGINAL LINEUP, OFFERING ALMOST ANY BRAND OF UPSCALE AUTOMOBILE ONE MIGHT WANT.

N

According to both CEO Kelly Wolf and DEM General Manager Jason Cammisa, it’s not only the high concentration of wealth in the Coachella Valley that makes it a perfect location for indiGO, but also the celebratory culture. “People may have businesses, homes, lives all over the country, but the desert is where they come to celebrate their success, to kinda let their hair down and have fun,” says Wolf. “With that comes a nice automobile.” Just driving around the desert, you’ll spot a half dozen Bentleys, two or three Rolls-Royces, a Lamborghini and so on—something that is less common in most other parts of California (or the country).

A

“The desert is just a really unique place,” says Cammisa. “Some people feel there’s a spiritual aspect to it. The desert is a fun place to shop for your car, not only because we have all these amazing brands in one location, but because we are pretty informal and low-pressure.” 130 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Giving Back •indiGO is involved with several charities and events in the Coachella Valley. December sees the indiGO Auto Group Drive 4 Kids event at the BMW Performance Center, benefiting the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Foundation. They also donate to The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, Desert AIDS Project and the Bianca Rae Foundation.

indiGO attracts buyers from all over the country, including nearby Los Angeles, which is the largest car market in the world. At indiGO, shoppers can enjoy a unique and relaxing buying experience—plus the Coachella Valley offers the best test drive routes imaginable. The luxury car manufacturers have also demonstrated their high regard for the Coachella Valley and indiGO. The new Porsche showroom was built in conjunction with Porsche engineers. Called Destination Porsche, the Porsche Palm Springs location is the first of its kind in the world. It was launched at the global Porsche dealer conference held in Palm Springs in 2019, and as part of the event, Porsche introduced the new 911 model—the first time in their history that they had ever released a new 911 in the United States. The new, ultra-sleek 2020 Rolls-Royce Ghost was first displayed at DEM this fall Sept. 2-8. Until then, it had never been showcased to the public.

At indiGO, shoppers can enjoy a unique and relaxing buying experience.

When it comes to attention to detail and the customer, indiGO puts their best foot forward with white-glove service, meaning any specific individual need of the customer is met. The Porsche Palm Springs showroom, among its many amenities, has a full non-alcoholic bar, fresh bakery goods that are brought in daily and a play area for the kids.

W

When it comes to attention to detail and the customer, indiGO puts their best foot forward with white-glove service, meaning any specific individual need of the customer is met.

Lamborghinis to Landscaping •For General Manager Jason Cammisa, free time isn’t too common. But when he does have time to unwind, he puts his green thumb to use. “I love working in the yard. I love plants. I love landscape design. It’s really fun for me,” says Cammisa. Tight Knit •indiGO is not just a team, it’s a family, according to Cammisa. “We’re all friends. We help our people to grow to be the best they can be.” When the pandemic is finally over, Cammisa hopes to sit down at Mastro’s Steakhouse in Palm Desert with his fellow coworkers and enjoy a big steak.

According to Cammisa, a new and noteworthy auto is the Lamborghini Sian—a visionary look at a 12-cylinder sports car. Among the “firsts” introduced in this 819-horsepower supercar are hybrid technology, drivability and the use of a supercapacitor for energy conservation. It accelerates from zero to 100 kph (60 mph) in under 2.9 seconds, and its top speed is 350 kph. It is a limited series of only 19 cars, and every one has been sold. The new Rolls-Royce Ghost is earning its name as the most refined car in the world, as it is the company’s most up-to-date fourdoor sedan and is completely revamped from its predecessor. To begin with, only about 30 of the cars will be coming into the country, and indiGO is taking deposits for these. Beginning in 2021, the Ghost will be in normal production. The McLaren Elva is intended to deliver the most thrilling driving experience of any vehicle with performance

unmatched by its competitors. The design creates aerodynamics that make a windshield unnecessary (the car literally doesn’t have one). An add-on windshield is available for states that require one for registration. It is the lightest, most dynamic car ever produced and the production is limited to 149 worldwide. The Aston Martin V12 Speedster, a tribute to the 1959 Nürburgringwinning DBR1, is another open-cockpit car. There will be only 88 of them produced worldwide, 10 of which will go to this country. indiGO will receive at least one of these. It has a 5.2 liter V-12 twin turbo engine and a full carbon-fiber body. The Bentley Bentayga is an update to Bentley’s first SUV. The 2017 Bentayga was the first luxury exotic sector SUV, but this new model has been completely redesigned. As an essential business, indiGO’s service departments have remained open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The sales departments are now open as well, adhering to strict safety procedures. Employees are constantly monitored for any symptoms, cars are disinfected prior to and after servicing or test drives, the showroom is regularly disinfected, temperature sensors monitor visitors, masks are mandatory and distancing is maintained.
