EDITOR'S NOTE with when I travel. To learn how to bring a little of your vacation home with you, check out our Room Essentials (pg. 70), where the interior designer of Sands Hotel & Spa shows you how to recreate your favorite destination decor in home.
How do you escape? For some it’s a weekend brunch with the ladies, while for others it’s a getaway to a beachside paradise. For me, it’s always been time spent vacationing with my family, whether it’s a short week away to soak in the sun, a holiday spent by the fireplace surrounded by kitschy Christmas decorations, or a trip overseas to immerse ourselves in a new culture, together. In these pages, I hope you find your new way to escape. Discover some international destination inspo in our Escape Feature (pg. 65) and pick your new favorite Cabo hideaway. Or if you prefer something a little further from home, see why Omnia Bali is the ultimate party hub (pg. 42). Vegas-style entertainment included! When your family comes to visit for their own holiday retreat, show them the best SoCal has to offer with our Escape Guide (pg. 53), a step-bystep guide for the best food, shops, hotels and must-see destinations each city has to offer. From your club-loving cousins to your golfing grandpa, we’ve got everyone in the family covered. There’s nothing I love more than finding fun souvenirs to fill my home
Nothing says family like a homemade meal cooked by mom. In our Meals Deconstructed (pg. 95) see how Executive Chef and Owner of Chúla Artisan Eatery, Katherine Gonzalez, recreates her mother’s classic Huevos Rancheros with an elevated and organic spin. (Ed. Note: Next time you stop at Chúla, don’t head home without a jar of the house-made, roasted tomatillo salsa—literal perfection!) Of course, the holidays aren’t complete without a little gift giving. Our Gift Guide (pg. 119) will help you with your seasonal shopping, whether you’re buying for your BFF who loves anything name brand or your aunt who can’t help but host Insta-worthy parties. We promise you’ll find something for everyone. For the international explorers and holiday homebodies (and everyone in between!), I hope this issue will motivate you to find your own personal escape. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Never meet your hero. It’s a well-known adage that feels even more relevant in a time of Instagram influencers and YouTube personalities, but if you’re a fan of Kandee Johnson—toss that advice right out the window. From the moment she stepped into the Palm Baum for our October cover shoot, Johnson was best friends with everyone on set, from the photo shoot coordinator to the social media assistants. She’s one of those celebrities you’ve got to meet to believe.
N
The pink home in Desert Hot Springs was the perfect setting for Johnson’s cover shoot, confirmed by her excitement the moment she walked through the door. Immediately tossing a record onto the home’s millennialpink record player, she danced around the room as she changed for hair and makeup, rocking out as hair stylist Chris Dylan and makeup artist Spencer Barnes transformed her into our dream-worthy cover model. “This is my first cover!” she gushed excitedly as Barnes brushed eyeshadow along her eyelids. First cover shoot or not, Johnson worked like a pro. With every click of the camera, photographer Andrea Domjan announced that it was the perfect shot. “We spent a fantastic day at the Palm Baum, which reminded me of a life-size Barbie house. It was the
perfect location to shoot with Kandee,” said Domjan. “She is one of the nicest people I have ever worked with. The creative team was phenomenal; we had an amazing time creating her images!” Johnson agreed. Every image was her favorite, every outfit was the best, and as she chose her next look with wardrobe stylist Teresita Marie, she couldn’t help falling in love with everything on the rack. "Kandee is a sweetheart. I wanted to bring options that matched her online personality—fun, bright and full of life,” explained Marie. “Luckily it was a great match. We wore gowns, we wore pantsuits, we wore swimsuits and we wore it with eloquence. She was open, talkative and so enjoyable to work with. The entire beauty team was a blast and I felt that it was a dazzling successful day. A match made in rainbow heaven.” By the end of the day-long photo shoot, Johnson never lost her bubbly personality, encouraging the crew to take a group photo with her. Although it was her first time to Palm Springs, as she packed up her belongings and made her way back to the car, she was already planning her next trip to the desert—and we can’t wait to have her.

ESCAPE The BROKER
JOHN HEALY
Credentials: Managing Broker, California Lifestyle Realty
NATURE AND NURTURE • “I find creativity in assisting nature and architecture to come together,” says Healy. “[Like] working with clients or builders to design a custom home that focuses on bringing the outside in.”
TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK • “It’s a true pleasure for me to work with our team in developing our office into one of the best in the desert,” says Healy. “It’s a privilege to work with such a wonderful team at every level in our company.” SPANISH HEART • Healy’s favorite architectural style? “Spanish colonial,” he says. “I love the arches, tile roofs and multiple roof elevations in the design. It provides a warm, homey interior space for entertaining.”
The role of Vice President and Managing Broker of California Lifestyle Realty is a dream come true for Healy. Since his appointment, California Lifestyle Realty has flourished with over 50 realtors, becoming one of the best offices in the Greater Palm Springs area. Healy contributes this success to his team but knows the beauty of the desert naturally draws in buyers. “[Greater Palm Springs] offers a quiet, relaxed but elegant atmosphere with all the convenience of [a] large metropolitan city and none of the congestion or big city issues. It’s not a coincidence that so many US Presidents, countless celebrities and multiple billionaires have all chosen this valley to call home.” CALIFORNIA LIFESTYLE REALTY 50200 Avenita Vista Bonita La Quinta, CA 92253 760.564.1200 www.californialifestylerealty.com THOMBOY PROPERTIES www.thomboyinc.com @thomboyproperties Photoshoot Location: PALM SPRINGS, CA
The PRESERVATIONISTS
DEEANN MCCOY AND JACKIE THOMAS Credentials: Co-Owners, Thomboy Properties DYNAMIC DUO • They are a perfect pair, affectionately referred to as the “Budget Buster” and “Design Queen.”
FINDING INSPIRATION • “[If] we love it, it can come from anywhere— a hike in the desert or the blue sky itself,” says Thomas.
Thomas and McCoy built a business on their love and affection for the desert. “With every project, we aim to take the authenticity and beauty of the past and reimagine it to align with how people live today,” says Thomas. This is apparent in the way they look for the idiosyncratic details in the structure of a home, what they call “the soul of a place.” They speak of their process as a daily conception of what it would be like to live in each one of the homes they design, every element accounted for in functionality, feeling and expression. 46 LOCALE MAGAZINE
HOARDER HOUSE REMODEL • “It’s always hard when asked to pick a favorite project, it’s like asking us to pick a favorite cat. That said, I would have to say the hoarder house we did on Camino Real,” said McCoy. “It was...in such disrepair that when the listing agent showed it to us he asked if he could wait outside!”
The INTERIOR DESIGNER
FRANK GILL
Credentials: Owner and Interior Designer, Frank Gill Design WEAR WHAT YOU LOVE • When you meet Gill for the first time, he asks that you wear something you love to share your personality and interests, it helps him to have a sense of your style when designing your space.
NATURAL WONDERS • “I love the contemporary style and warm, earthy tones inherent to Palm Springs, that make for a beautiful, neutral palette whilst allowing for pops of color,” says Gill. “I always add pops of color.” CLIENT CREATIVITY • “My client is my greatest source of inspiration. Knowing the client is what defines my entire design philosophy,” says Gill.
The first time Gill felt called to embrace home design, he was looking at a book about homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Oddly, Wright passed away the day Gill was born (make of that what you will), and he has since felt kindred to his work. Gill’s work spans the Estates at Marriott Desert Springs to high-end homes in Cypress Heights. “Architecture makes up the bones of a home,” says Gill. Then with his eye and heart for design, he ensures his clients’ homes “manifest their vision while leaving no detail unfinished, down to the design of the dishes.”

Kurt Cyr knows Greater Palm Springs. For over 100 years, artists, designers and celebs alike have flocked to the area as a creative outlet. Taking a tour with Cyr’s Palm Springs Mod Squad is to experience the creations, history and impact they left behind—all through the eyes of an experienced, passionate guide. As he puts it: “The world comes to Palm Springs.” And when they come, Cyr guides visitors through the people and places, the glamour and the architecture that makes the Greater Palm Springs area so special.

PAT AND JACK WOOD
Credentials: Co-Owners, Encore Consign + Design Studio
FINDING INSPO • When the Woods need an extra dose of inspiration, the dynamic duo looks no further than Dorothy Draper who said, “I always put in one controversial item, it makes people talk.”
PICKING FAVORITES • The duo doesn’t have a favorite piece. Instead, Pat says, “we get exciting consignments from different people, different places, different designers every day, and all of these pieces find a second life when combined in different settings to create a unique, emotional experience.” ALL IN THE BIZ • “We’re inspired by a passion for business and curate consigned art and furniture offerings in the valley,” says Pat Wood.
Pat and Jack Wood created Encore in 2011 after they moved to the desert in 2000 from Calabasas, California. At Encore, they offer their buyers a 360-degree view of creativity—especially when looking around their showroom. This pair looks for furniture that offers unexpected combinations and arrangements designed to engage. The store itself houses 23,000 square feet of one-of-a-kind furnishings and accessories. “Our strength is our vast assortment of hand-picked treasures— Tuscan to modern, contemporary to Santa Fe and beyond— we have pieces that will blend perfectly across all of the architectural nuances of Palm Springs,” says Pat Wood.

TAIB LOTFI AND KENYA KNIGHT Credentials: Co-Owners, Soukie Modern FOLLOW YOUR ARROW • “Choose the things that bring you joy. If you have a dream, sit with that. Understand how you feel about it,” says Lotfi.
MIDCENTURY MAKEOVER • “Recently we remodeled our midcentury modern home, called Soukie Kasbah, into a lifestyle representation of our brand,” says Knight. “The house is filled with incredible vintage pieces sourced in Palm Springs and Morocco.”
Soukie Modern harmonizes the cultures of Palm Springs and Marrakech into one, beautiful collection, representing a “Collective Casbah,” merging kindred worlds of design with vintage Moroccan rugs and pieces for the home. “At Soukie Modern, we find inspiration right here in Palm Springs, with our own whimsical twist just a little left of center,” notes Knight. To explore Soukie Modern is to absorb the passion of two beautiful people with hands reaching out to offer more than design, here energy is manifested in hand-woven rugs, blankets and more. 48 LOCALE MAGAZINE
CULTURE CREATORS • Knight and Lotfi develop their ongoing vision called Palm2Palm. Two palms signify a pair of trees, one in Palm Springs and the other in Marrakech, offering friendship between cultures. “Two cities [that] are actually on the same latitude,” explains Knight.

KNOW WHEN TO STEP AWAY • “When we find ourselves stuck creatively, we take a break. We distance ourselves from the project, but we can talk about it and inspire each other, so we eventually dig ourselves out.” —Howard Hawkes

Self-proclaimed “not purists,” designers Howard Hawkes and Kevin Kemper of H3K Design are not simply restoring midcentury-modern homes, they are reinventing them. “We love the aesthetics of midcentury-modern architecture, but lifestyles have changed. We consider the whole house and lifestyle of the clients,” said Hawkes. Taking inspiration from their surroundings, H3K’s style preserves vintage architecture and gives it a modern twist.

TEAM EFFORT • “Always remember that color is only part of a decorating scenario. Textures, materials and scale all work together to create the perfect room or vignette.” —Howard Hawkes

“When most people think of Mexican food, they think greasy and fattening. But at Chúla, the Mexican food we serve is clean and fresh.”
See Ya in the Fall! • Gonzalez only serves the freshest ingredients, which is why she closes Chúla down during the summer months to take her restaurant on the road, where the produce is in season. Save the Planet • Chúla’s carbon footprint is almost nonexistent. They don’t use canned foods, recycle all bottles and use excess vegetable scraps to boil down into a broth.
Who doesn’t crave a weekend getaway to Mexico? A spicy combination of bold flavors and evocative music sounds like the perfect escape, but we can’t always find time to make that trip. Thankfully, Chúla Artisan Eatery is home to the same robust flavors of Mexico and is a much shorter, and healthier, expedition. Chúla is the embodiment of authentic Mexican food, creating healthy, organic versions of bona fide, Mexican dishes from locally-sourced, farm-to-table ingredients. One bite into the prominent Huevos Rancheros dish and you'll begin to wonder if you are still on the US side of the border.
W
—Katherine Gonzalez
With their Huevos Rancheros, Head Chef and Owner Katherine Gonzalez dug up her Spanish roots to give you a little taste of her culture. “We used to eat this all the time when I was young,” says Gonzalez. “My mother is the inspiration. I wanted to create something special and embrace my family heritage.” Chef Gonzalez deconstructed the Huevos Rancheros dish, a popular dish that displays a rich flavor profile with dynamic ingredients including colorful cactus tortillas as a base, topped with creamy, pureed black beans and house-made turkey chorizo seasoned with ground cinnamon, Spanish paprika and red chile powder. Gonzalez then adds a roasted garlic tomatillo salsa and fresh avocado. The dish is then topped with poached, cage-free eggs, queso fresco, red chile oil, housemade onion jam for a burst of flavor and local, fresh microgreens as garnish. “When most people think of Mexican food, they think greasy and fattening,” says Gonzalez. “But at Chúla, the Mexican food we serve is clean and fresh.” And that it is. Gonzalez is quite the advocate for healthy food and goes beyond just buying fresh ingredients, but even substitutes for healthier food alternatives and cooking styles. “Instead of using traditional chorizo, which is pork, we opt for leaner meats such as chicken and turkey,” says Gonzalez. “Our beans are slow-cooked and never refried. The dates and onions from our onion jam are slow-cooked as well, a cooking method that helps to preserve the nutrients and flavor.” Chúla is also vegan and gluten-free friendly, making the restaurant a popular spot with those who have dietary restrictions, but still want vibrant, flavorful food. Gonzalez suggests pairing the Huevos Rancheros dish with a delicious raspberry mimosa, made up of Chúla’s house-made raspberry syrup, sparkling Cava and fresh mint for a refreshing contrast to the savory flavors of the dish. Together, the pairing makes for a superb brunch.
But Chúla offers so much more than just delicious meals. A lovely, cafe-style restaurant in the heart of La Quinta, Chúla creates a bright, open atmosphere for their guests with a mix of modern and rustic touches. Gonzalez put in a beautifully vibrant, casita blue bench that runs across the entire back wall. “We have [the same] casita blue-colored lining around the windows in our home, I love the color so much and wanted to bring a little part of our home to Chúla,” says Gonzalez. The statement piece is the first thing to catch your eye upon walking in—after the aromas catch your nose, of course! Most everything in Chúla is recycled or repurposed. Gonzalez’s mission to create a restaurant with a healthier purpose can be seen beyond their food and in decor items including the tables made from a repurposed gazebo, linen made from organic cotton, and the wine and beer bottles, which are saved to be repurposed as drinking glasses. “People can tell the difference when you give them a fresh product,” says Gonzalez. She said she believes in giving the community extra love through food and an inviting atmosphere, which is the kind of mindset she considers so important to embrace. Chúla offers many more clean, authentic Mexican dishes, such as their renowned tamales, topped with a poached egg, all stemming from childhood experiences or recipes. “When I was younger, my mother used to make tamales with a poached egg on top for breakfast, and I would be upset because all of my friends were eating things like Froot Loops and other fun cereals,” says Gonzalez. “But everything came full circle, and now I love the dish, I appreciate it more and I eat it all the time.” The name of her restaurant, Chúla, can mean ‘beautiful’ in Spanish, but the name also represents Gonzalez’s childhood. “My mother nicknamed me Chúla when I was a young girl, and I now call my own daughter Chúla,” says Gonzalez. “That is why I chose the name for the restaurant, especially being that my mother inspired it, but also because the food we serve here is beautiful.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 97

home where they could help with her son, and she could put some money aside. “I was having such a hard time being a single mom doing makeup,” she says. “I put all my stuff in storage; I’m driving, crying all the way home, leaving, going back to Nevada…the whole drive home thinking ‘I’m leaving the city where all of my dreams are, I’m literally leaving the place where this career’s going to happen.’” Life, of course, works in mysterious ways—what she admittedly saw as a failure turned into a godsend. Turning to YouTube as a creative outlet on the suggestion of a friend, she found a home on the video platform and now boasts over 3.9 million followers on YouTube alone. “If I hadn’t moved there I never would have started [on] YouTube. It’s like I was being pulled backward in a slingshot, but I couldn’t see it at the time,” she speaks honestly. “I was like, ‘I’m going backward, I’m going away from my dreams,’ but it’s… what catapulted me further. I never would have dreamed the blessings that I would have from doing YouTube when I started. That was one of those moments where I felt like I was a failure, but it really was the biggest stepping stone to a blessing I had no idea would even take place.” Johnson counts her blessings every day. Anyone who follows her on social media can see that the family-oriented, mother of four uses her platform as a way to connect, uplift and inspire her followers. After her father’s death, she used YouTube as a way to not only heal herself but those around her. “Right after my dad died, I remember thinking the good he would want me

Tim Burton’s Masterpiece u Johnson has transformed herself into everyone from Barbie to Thor, but for her, one creation will always top them all. “Edward Scissorhands will probably always be a favorite because it was one of the first ones that I did. It was so crazy!” said Johnson. Celebrity Fangirl u In 2010, at Fred Segal in Hollywood, Johnson heard someone singing her name. “I turn around, I hear it again— it’s Brandy. Brandy was singing my name!” cried Johnson. They stopped to take photos together, but she was starstruck for the rest of the day. Teen Beauty Queen u Johnson has been playing with makeup since she was 13 when her mother gave her her first Elizabeth Arden cosmetic kit. Using the palette, she made her own concoctions by mixing colors and blending eyeshadows with her chapsticks.

to take away from this would be to comfort others who are hurting in the same way,” she explains. “As soon as I posted about my dad passing, hundreds and hundreds of people sent me emails and comments saying…‘thank you so much for making me feel not alone, thank you for your words of encouragement,’” she says. “So for me, any pain that I’ve gone through, I want to use it to comfort others who are feeling the same way, and to me, that’s the greatest blessing of any pain that you go through.” Helping others through similar difficulties using such a beautiful and creative medium might be what Johnson finds so fulfilling about the work she does. She’s connected with terminal cancer patients, girls who have been bullied, and fans who have lost friends, family and loved ones. People who come to her platform in search of a way to feel beautiful leave with a sense of connection and deeper understanding. “The first email I got that made me start crying…was a girl that said she was going to commit suicide, but she wanted to look beautiful when people found her body,” she starts as she begins to tear up. “She Googled how to look pretty, and for some reason, my YouTube video came up at the top. She wrote [to] me and said ‘I just want you to know, that I was planning on taking my life… and I found your video. It’s eight hours later, and I saw your story and what you’ve been through, and how you’ve kept going. You’ve inspired me that I can keep going too.” As she glances up at the ceiling trying to keep her tears from ruining her makeup before the cover shoot, it’s clear Johnson’s appreciation for makeup goes deep beneath the superficial surface that so many attribute to the beauty industry. For Johnson, her focus on external beauty feels like a reflection of self, a way to bring inner beauty to the surface. “I think that is the gift of what I get to do and really at the heart of why I became a makeup artist. Seeing the beauty that you can bring out, it’s always there. Even

though people look at makeup as this superficial something that people are doing, it really is more about the internal,” she explains. Makeovers with Kim Kardashian and collaborations with Too Faced aside, Johnson becomes somber as she speaks quietly about the fans she meets and how mothers pull her aside to tell her what a positive influence she’s had on their child’s life. “It is the most rewarding thing to know that you’ve been able to have that impact, and to me, that’s greater than any award or accolade that I could ever receive, just to feel the difference that I’ve been able to make. At the end of the day, life is short, and I just want to touch as many people as I can and inspire them and make them feel loved and make them feel happy! There’s no greater reward than that for me.” With such a dedicated fan base and so many career successes, Johnson won’t be taking a break any time soon. “I have a bunch of projects in the works that I’m so excited to work on,” she starts. “I have wanted to write a book for years since way before even YouTube, so there will be a book in the works.” She hesitates for a moment before she smiles coyly like a child with a juicy secret. She hints at a makeup collection then a fashion line, toting a passion for shoes and accessories. “I mean I want to do everything! I don’t ever want to limit myself or think that I’m like a one-trick pony!” No one could ever consider Johnson a onetrick pony. The influencer has had her hand in almost everything recently, and it’s clear she can’t stop, won’t stop. Even as we talk, the image she posted on Instagram only moments ago has hundreds of comments from fans showing their support and excitement for her first magazine cover. She glances at her phone with a smile, “I’m so honored that I have this platform to use to inspire people, and everything I do I want to make people feel good, inspire them to be positive, give them hope and add fun! I just want to add fun to people’s [lives]!”

Todd Blue has always been an admirer of European sports cars. After working almost two decades in other industries, Blue’s passion quickly became his vocation when he changed his career focus and founded indiGO Classic Cars in 2006. Buying and selling these rare and collectible sports cars to fellow enthusiasts did not feel like work to Blue. “I consider the automobile business my vocation and my passion. For my entire life I had been fascinated with cars; I have collected cars and originally focused my collection (and business) on post-war, European sports cars from the late 1940s-1970s,” Blue said.

Entering each showroom can be exciting, and the excitement grows when you stand in awe at the impressive collection of these amazing automobile brands. At indiGO Auto Group’s campuses in Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage, visitors can enjoy lavish, beautiful and original designs, all in one place. From the brands we represent and services we offer, our number one goal is a white glove guest experience. We call it activating customer ownership.” The mission of indiGO Auto Group is to assure there is always a boutique environment and a white-glove guest experience. Charitable Living indiGO Drive4Kids, co-created by Todd Blue and Kelly Wolf, has a history of supporting great causes: 2012-2014 • Over $110,000 for Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers 2016 • Over $48,000 raised for The Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center • Over $40,000 raised for The Bianca Rae Foundation’s Rae of Hope Retreat.
and service to his customers that he always desired as a consumer. “I wanted to protect experiential ownership and honor the heritage of the brands we represent. If our team shares the passion I have for automobiles with our existing and new customers, we have done our job,” Blue noted. Additionally, Blue shares his passion with his community through several charitable ventures, including his own indiGO Drive4Kids which has partnered with the Texas Children’s Hospital, The Bianca Rae Foundation’s Rae of Hope Retreat and The Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center. “With each decision that we make as a company, we evaluate how to better serve the local communities, economy and charitable organizations,” he said. “We’re constantly seeking new opportunities to get involved and give back to the community, which is why we began our annual Drive4Kids event.” This Dec. 2-3, indiGO Auto Group
is also sponsoring The Jerry at The Madison Club in honor of a good friend and customer of his, Jerry Weintraub, to benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation. So what’s in the future for indiGO Auto Group? “The most exciting thing to catapult indiGO is our opening of a new, 40,000-square-foot Porsche facility in Palm Springs. There are currently four generations of Porsche facilities and the new one we are opening is a Generation 5—the first of its kind in the world,” Blue explained. “It will even include dedicated environments for each Porsche model sold. Porsche Palm Springs will be unlike any dealership ever built in the world.” The all-new Porsche Palm Springs will open to hosting over 500 Porsche dealers from around the world who will visit Palm Springs in January of 2019. ‘Wow,’ is usually the first reaction people have when they walk onto the 80-year-old homestead of the Old Town Artisan Studios in La Quinta. This three-acre property has become a compound filled with flowers, fountains, bright umbrellas, outdoor seating, rock walls constructed of native stone, old growth trees and an abundance of artistic activity. Thomas Burns, Executive Director of the Studios describes the campus as, “our unique home. It is not a traditional school or art facility it is an oasis for creative people.”

The nonprofit Artisan Studios was started in 2009 by Victory and Richard Grund as part of Victory’s healing process from a personal tragedy. The Grunds believe in the healing powers of artistic expression. The lack of art facilities and the closing of art classes in public schools were catalysts for the creation of Old Town Artisan Studios. “I believe in this vision 100 percent,” says Thomas Burns. “Victory and Richard want to give back to the community and express themselves through art. They believe art is healing and has a lasting, positive effect. That resonates with me. I know how important art has been in my personal healing.” People come to this creative oasis to share in the experience. There is no target demographic. Anyone who walks through the gates is welcome to come and get involved in the arts. “Our mission is to empower people. We are born very creative, but our environment and other factors get in the way of our creativity. Here we allow the creative process to happen. Kids can be kids. Adults can be adults. It all just happens naturally.” Classes are taught at a level that meets each student’s needs. Younger children are given the opportunity to get their hands on clay, while older children and adults are instructed in ceramics and sculpture. For adults, drawing, watercolor and fused glass are some of the classes currently offered,
How Can You Help? There are many ways the community can get involved. Volunteers are needed for everything from cleaning, administration, or helping with events and classes. Donations are also greatly appreciated. Upcoming Fundraiser A fundraiser is planned for Nov. 29-Dec. 18. Miniature masterpieces donated by local, regional and statewide artists will be on exhibit in the Leland Gallery. Outreach for the Holidays Beginning Saturday, Nov. 24 the campus will be transformed into Gingerbread Lane with lights and beautiful holiday decorations.
as courses continue to expand. “Anytime an instructor comes to us who is passionate about their art, is an expert in their field and embraces our mission to give back to the community through the healing power of art, then I want to add their class,” says Burns. With their Hearts for Art Mobile Program, an entire art department can be taken anywhere. “I love our mobile art studio,” says Burns. “We can take our entire clay studio, put it on wheels and go anywhere in the Coachella Valley.” Ivanna Diaz-Hansen, outreach instructor, loads and unloads the van every day for the classes she teaches on the road. “She has a passion for people and wants them to experience getting their hands into clay,” says Burns. The van serves all of the communities in Coachella Valley, from Palm Springs to Thermal and Mecca. “Many times donors will ask that the van visit a specific organization; the boys club, veterans services, a senior center and we go and serve that community.” All of the Studios’ expansion is a result of generous donations. Future projects and plans are to build a music and performing arts center as well as 24 professional, working artists studios. “We would love to become the center of art activity in the Coachella Valley with professional artists coming and going all the time,” explains Burns. The expression, “Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life,” is a perfect description of the work environment at Old Town Artisan Studios. “We are trying to create surroundings where people can come and have fun and express themselves through art,” notes Burns. “It is such a pleasant place, surrounded by waterfalls and palm trees. It is relaxing but exciting at the same time because of all the creative activity that is going on here.”
