Editor's Note

102 How to Make

DESERT DAYDREAMS

Dear Reader, Not only does this book mark the beginning of my favorite time of year, but it also marks the 101st issue produced by LOCALE Magazine. As you can imagine, turning 101 is a big deal, so at the turn of this significant milestone, I couldn’t help but be reminded of fellow 101-yearold—my great grandma, GG. GG was born in 1918 and has lived through world events that most of us only know of due to our history textbooks. Her family emigrated from Portugal, then lived on and worked a rural farm in California’s Central Valley. She grew up in that countryside, fell in love with her high school sweetheart and then raised a family of her own. Two generations later, she helped raise me, and my childhood was full of stories of her spirit and stubbornness (two things she was never short on) as well as her signature pearls of wisdom. So when it came to building this issue, I tried to keep those pearls in mind, and I hope you can find them as important as I do: 1. “Find what you love to do.” Through these pages, we have found so many different passions to bring to you. From the “visual optimism” that is Leslie Schneider’s Instagram page (pg. 48) to tips from Dani Nagel on how to transform your home into something mod and magnificent (pg. 102), this issue is

chock-full of artists, creators and business owners who have made a career out of their true callings. 2. “So long as you’re healthy and have your family, that’s the main thing.” We hope this issue finds a home inside yours throughout this holiday season; that it’s thumbed through by friends and relatives as they cozy-up on your couch, finding all the things they want to try while with you—whether it’s the creative culinary works of Andie Hubka (pg. 114), planning a trip together while reading our Hotel Guide (pg. 69) or creating a few Lillet cocktails (pg. 129). 3. “Just have fun.” There are three people gracing the pages of this issue that sum this up perfectly. The first two are husband and wife, Ray and Melissa Perko, who have built a life and a business by “treasure hunting” (pg. 134). The third is Cover Star James Maslow (pg. 54), who talks about what it’s like to find authenticity in his art—while splashing around in a pool, of course. So to those of you reading this, I hope that both GG and this issue leave you feeling inspired, especially in this season of reflection and upcoming change. I hope that you find your passions, and I hope that as you’re surrounded by the ones you love, you’ll cherish the health and time that you share. But most importantly, don’t forget to have fun. After all, “that’s the main thing.”

Happy Reading,

JORDAN NISHKIAN Editor jordan.n@localemagazine.com | @wordsbyjordan

MAKING ISSUE the

COVER

Photographed By: Nick Isabella, nickisabella.photography @nickisabella.photography Model: James Maslow, www.jamesmaslow.com | @jamesmaslow Location: Palm Springs, CA Written By: Ameihia Turingan, iridescentglimmer.wordpress.com | @ameihia Styled By: Neil Cohen, neilcohenstyle.com | @neilcohenstyle Groomed By: Libbey Lazarus, kissandmakeupnow.com | @libbeylazarus Shorts Provided By: Towne Palm Springs, Allview, www.towneps.com

In our conversation, James Maslow spoke with candor about his journey and opened up about the goals for his new music. Speaking with him and hearing his new music provided a pivotal view of his perspective on the industry and his good-natured personality. Maslow displayed confidence and frankness, sharing how his past experiences and selfreflection on his next steps all add up to the person he’s become.

I

As one of the first interviews where Maslow had the opportunity to reveal this new stage of his career, the passion was evident in his voice as he opened up about LTX and shared key moments about the new song “Did You Forget,” which I had the chance to listen to before its official release. Whether talking about music or movies, his excitement was palpable during the interview, and it was even more amplified during the photoshoot. Maslow displayed his lively energy on set in Palm Springs. Despite the 110-degree heat, he was smiling, posing and having a great time on camera. Maslow’s personality and demeanor made a positive impression on members of the photoshoot team, like Groomer Libbey Lazarus. “James and I bonded over two products I used while grooming him for this shoot:

the eye cream from TwinMedix called ‘Pro:Refine Eye Corrector’ and the brown sugar lip scrub from Sara Happ,” says Lazarus. To prepare for outfit changes, Wardrobe Stylist Neil Cohen was at hand with pulls from local Palm Springs retailers. “Shooting in the summer heat of Palm Springs is never easy. However, James was a great sport [and] did whatever [was] necessary to get the shot,” says Cohen. “Luckily the feel for the shoot was a casual, Palm Springs feel. I used color, prints and stripes—all with a slight vintage vibe.” Like with Lazarus, Maslow and Cohen bonded over a product; this time it was the color pink. Instead of Cohen’s pink shorts, they decided to go with Maslow’s own pink jeans for one of the outfits. Meanwhile, Photographer Nick Isabella prepared to capture Maslow throughout the house, from the doorframe to the lounge chair by the pool. Isabella was dedicated to taking the perfect shot of Maslow, even if it meant getting in the pool himself to snap a unique angle of the cover star. Turns out, the pool was the most refreshing place to be after a long day in the Palm Springs sun, and Maslow wrapped up the photo shoot with a backflip into the water.

Tucked away in a narrow unit on Park Boulevard, local plant shop EDEN bursts forth with a lush indoor jungle of gorgeous greenery handpicked by CoOwner Stephanie Reed herself. “I love picking out all the plants,” Reed says with a smile in her voice. “We don’t preorder anything, so I get to go to a lot of local north county wholesalers and pick out the best of the best.”

T

The quality of the plants is evident even when you first step through EDEN’s doors. Even the air itself seems to change, wrapping patrons in a clean, pleasant humidity. “People always say, ‘Oh, the air is so clean! It smells so good in here!’” Reed says. And there’s a good reason: “More than half of the plants in EDEN are air-purifying plants.” Not only does EDEN promote healthy, beautiful indoor spaces, it also promotes peace of mind—without that boutique price tag. “I really want our store to be for people who don’t necessarily have a lot of money—college students, stay-at-home moms, people who just want to add a little bit of life to their space without breaking the bank.”

“Houseplants are a lot easier than people think!” —Stephanie Reed

Although many attribute the store’s success to the family’s green thumb, Reed insists, “Houseplants are a lot easier than people think! When people go online and they’re reading all this insane amount of information, it can seem daunting, but really, it’s not that hard.” The family business began when Reed, along with her mother, sister and brother-in-law, bought Northpark Nursery, and “about six months or so into owning it,” they opened EDEN. “We noticed that indoor plants were becoming trendier,” she explains, “which is something I really grappled with: it is trendy. It’s very fueled by social media, so I get a lot of people [who] want the trendy plant, and the trendy plant is now something overpriced.” Instead, Reed makes a point to introduce her customers to other plants to ensure that they’re making the best choice for their space and their wallet: “I’m always trying to remind people that there are so many pretty plants that aren’t trendy, that aren’t overpriced, that are easy to care for. Just because you haven’t seen it hashtagged a billion times, doesn’t mean it’s not worth having.” While there are plenty of studies that back up the physical and psychological benefits of plants, Reed thinks it’s a personal experience. “I don’t know if plants just make people kinder or if just being surrounded by nature naturally creates a calm,” she discloses. “Either way, it’s all good vibes from here at the store!” EDEN 4636 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92116 619.431.5095 | www.edengardenhome.com 52 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Singer-songwriter and actor James Maslow believes it is important to develop and redefine your identity. In the past year, Maslow has spent time recalibrating and setting the stage for the next decade of his career. He first achieved success early on as a teenager on the Nickelodeon show “Big Time Rush,” but now, Maslow has found his unique place in the world of entertainment and gained the ability to shape his identity and art. After more than a decade in the business, James Maslow is creating art that is authentically, unapologetically and unequivocally himself.

Maslow first discovered his passion for singing and acting in his childhood. After feeling like his artistic side wasn’t being developed in regular curriculum, he attended the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, where he explored different mediums of storytelling. “I wasn’t really sure of what my identity was, so I jumped into this performing arts school and found myself just falling in love with entertaining,” says Maslow. “I found that my passion really laid in being in front of the camera on the acting side and [pop music], instead of the musical theater and traditional choir genre that I was raised with.”

M

Pursuing his passion for acting and music led him to his 2009 breakout role in “Big Time Rush” and the band of the same name. This opportunity launched Maslow into stardom and the first chapter of his success. Post-“Big Time Rush,” Maslow took a variety of acting roles, from reality television to movies, and shared music, from LPs to covers on YouTube. In all these experiences, he gained valuable insight to his identity and the type of artist he wanted to be. “I’ve taken a real hard look at where I want to go, who I feel that I am as a person, what I want to talk about in my music [and] what acting projects I want to do,” remarks Maslow. “So much has changed in this past year, and I think [it’s] all for the better.” To pivot into this new chapter of his life, Maslow started a music project called LTX. He co-created it with his best friend Eugene Ugorski (also known as Trifør), who is a producer and talented violinist that Maslow describes as “one of the most successful instrumentalists in the world.” The independent project focuses on electronic dance music and pop-

dance music. While the duo has a combined 30 years of music experience, Maslow and Ugorski feel that LTX is their best work yet. “We’re having so much fun with this, and we’re dancing to it,” Maslow says. LTX shared their new single, “Did You Forget,” on Sept. 13. When creating LTX songs, the pair found success when Ugorski began the songwriting process with instrumentation. “He’ll come with all the medley chords. It just sparks another train of thought [by] starting a song with such a high level of musicality,” says Maslow. The focus on musicality works with “Did You Forget,” making the finished product anything but a forgettable track. You’re quickly drawn into the song by Maslow’s strong and impressive vocals that are full of conviction when speaking about a rocky relationship. Maslow’s confident delivery of the lyrics pair perfectly with the upbeat, catchy electronic sound that is woven throughout the song. The engaging electronic beats, which take center stage at opportune moments, elevate the song into a danceable track that will make you move whether you listen to it in your car or live in a crowd full of people. The memorable hook and foot-tapping rhythm will have you saying “did you forget?” long after the song ends. While the track is fun and danceable, closely listening to the lyrics reveals the passion and heartbreak that inspired the song. “Did You Forget” represents an experience that Maslow went through. He hopes the song is relatable to people who have felt like they’re giving more in a relationship than their partner. “[It’s about] that issue: ‘Did you forget where we’ve been and did you forget how much I love you?’” says Maslow.

“Go out and do anything you enjoy and anything you’re going to be good at.” —James Maslow

STAYING FIT • Fitness is extremely important to Maslow, and he plans to start sharing his workout videos on YouTube. “Results are only going to come from consistency,” he advises. “So it’s better to get in something every day [rather] than one big workout a week.” GAME ON • Maslow found his recent role as a popular YouTube video gamer in We Need to Talk interesting because it was outside of his comfort zone. To prepare for this role, he did a lot of research, played a lot of video games and thought back about his childhood, playing games with his brother and friends. 58 LOCALE MAGAZINE

FAVORITE SONG AT THE MOMENT • [“Who Knows”] is one of his favorite songs that he’s ever written, and he loves playing it on the piano. “It’s a song about a pretty heartbreaking experience, but when I play it...I don’t listen to it and get sad. I listen to it and get pumped because if I got through that, I can get through anything,” Maslow says. SURFING IS UNIVERSAL • Maslow’s favorite surfing experience was in Rio de Janeiro, when he accidentally got into the way of another surfer and tried to have a conversation with him despite the language barrier. “[It was] one of the coolest conversations I’ve ever had where we kept trying to explain to each other what we did in like [a] really broken Spanish, Portuguese [and] English conversation.” DREAM ROLE • Maslow vows that he will play a superhero one day. “The little kid in me wants to do that, and I think that’d be a hell of a lot of fun,” he says. LOCALE MAGAZINE 59

“I just have to do what I enjoy. I just have to put out music that is authentic to me and write about things that I actually know and I believe in.” —James Maslow The pair aims to create unique listening and in-person experiences for fans by releasing new content and hosting live events. The LTX show in São Paulo, Brazil, on Sept. 14 demonstrated their vision to create incredible events that combine DJ sets and live vocals. “We may start [with a] DJ [set] and then transition to me singing over DJ-ing tracks and the electronic vibe,” describes Maslow. “Then [we] transition to a completely instrumental, traditional show with guitars, drums [and] keys.” Maslow hopes to emphasize this unique movement from turntables to stripped-down instrumentals by having Ugorski play the violin at a future show.

T

EARLY STARTS • Maslow and Ugorski both earned musical success at a young age: a teenage Maslow with his Nickelodeon debut and an eightyear-old Ugorski with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra.

To inform his audience of new projects, Maslow often shares new developments through Instagram stories, YouTube vlogs and Twitter Q&As. While he enjoys being connected, Maslow is also learning how to navigate boundaries with his personal and professional life. “I’m continually allowing myself to break down these barriers in my personal life and the rest of the world,” he remarks. “When I started, there wasn’t this type of expectation from fans to be able to see directly into my...personal life—like my dating life. All that just didn’t exist.” Maslow was encouraged to keep those areas separate at the beginning of his career, but nowadays, he is becoming less reserved online. He hopes to bring in his fans’ input with the new music and projects. Along with LTX, Maslow has started pursuing movie and television roles that are meaningful to him. He has a few upcoming films, including indie comedy We Need to Talk (which Maslow considers one of the best scripts he’s ever read), as well as World War II movie Wolf Hound, where he plays Captain David Holden. Not only did his role in Wolf Hound fulfill one of his goals to participate in a period piece, but the film was significant to Maslow because it allowed him to play a pilot whose storyline mirrors a similar experience that his own grandfather went through in the war. As a multitalented actor and singer, Maslow shares the excitement and frustration that comes with pursuing both passions. He has balanced these interests for years and knows he will always do both in every stage of his career. He likes that his

60 LOCALE MAGAZINE

schedule does not allow for much downtime and enjoys the transition from set to tour. However, his extremely busy schedule sometimes means that he has to pass on interesting roles or auditions. To mitigate this, Maslow has plans for the future. “My long-term goal is to build up enough success in both lanes that allows me more freedom to dictate what I do and when I do it. And I think that’s the ultimate fulfillment—the freedom to choose,” says Maslow. When finding new roads to fulfillment, Maslow has started to think outside of the traditional path an actor or singer takes. He recently discovered a passion for television hosting, and he really enjoys his host role on the CW talent show, “The Big Stage.” He will also be starring in My Boyfriend’s Meds which hits theaters Feb. 21. Before this experience, he never thought about doing nontraditional roles due to advice he received as a young adult. “When I was a younger man, I had an agent where, when I was offered opportunities to host, [said] ‘No, no, no. Actors don’t host,’” remembers Maslow. “And in a way, I’m kind of grateful to have gone through that because it’s developed my opinion, which is [that] I highly disagree. Go out and do anything you enjoy and anything you’re going to be good at because people look at that and think, ‘Oh shit, I like that guy or that girl. I like what you’re doing here.’” Maslow values curiosity, personal fulfillment and authenticity through this next phase of his career. He continues to explore new ways to share art and connect with his audience. With this new era, Maslow is energized and excited about what’s to come. While he is curious to see how his fans and the general public react to LTX, Maslow won’t measure success solely on others’ validation. “I just have to do what I enjoy. I just have to put out music that is authentic to me and write about things that I actually know and I believe in. You can’t put something out, going, ‘I’ll only be happy if this is huge,’” says Maslow. “No, I’m gonna put it out because I’m happy with the music [and] what I’m doing with my life. I’m happy [to be] working with my best friend, and I genuinely think it’s the best stuff I’ve ever done, so all I can do is cross my fingers and hope that other people feel the same way.”

Though their first names are the same, Bennion Deville Homes Co-Owners Bob Bennion and Bob Deville each provide their own unique industry knowledge and hands-on leadership approaches to those working at their brokerage. Bennion Deville Homes is a full-service brokerage focused on providing agents with the latest in marketing and technology platforms to ensure that every client’s experience is truly exceptional. What started as just eight agents in 2001 has now expanded to nearly 1,000, with Bennion and Deville proudly serving as role models and leaders of the boutique brokerage. “At Bennion Deville Homes, we are only as good as our agents and staff within our company,” explains Deville.

Deville first obtained his Broker’s License in Washington State back in 1991, noting his love for real estate first inspired him to purchase and upgrade various properties. “I began buying single-family properties and, if they didn’t have central air or a fenced backyard, I would add that,” reminisces Deville. He quickly became familiar with local market trends, and his real estate portfolio increased substantially. He adds, “What started as just a hobby turned into a pretty profitable venture and, at one point, I had about 35 to 40 properties.”

Power in Numbers • Bennion Deville Homes is the leading Coachella Valley real estate brokerage with 15 desert offices and nearly $2.4 billion in sales volume in 2018.

“I had never been to Palm Springs and, during the weekend we visited, we bought a house.” —B OB DEVILLE

It wasn’t until 1993 that Deville met Bennion in Seattle, which ultimately lead to the creation of the full-service brokerage we know today as Bennion Deville Homes. Bennion grew up in the Pacific Northwest, where he always enjoyed checking out local properties for sale and architecture in general. Bennion explains, “Every weekend I would go look at houses and realized I had a passion for real estate.” After obtaining his license in 1988, Bennion sold properties until ultimately forming a team with Deville in Seattle in 1993. One weekend, after he purchased a property in nearby Sun Valley, Idaho, Deville received a call from Bennion, who was planning to scope out a few properties in the Greater Palm Springs area that coming weekend. “I had never been to Palm Springs and, during the weekend we visited, we bought a house,” recalls Deville. The two fell in love with the region quickly and decided to learn more about the promising area. Bennion admits, “We are real estate addicts, so, of course, we started looking at real estate in Palm Springs.” Motivated to truly immerse himself in the desert’s real estate market, Deville obtained his California Broker’s License. He joined a local Palm Springs company, and over the next couple of years became an expert of the region’s market and, more importantly, created a sense of trust between him and the community.

Then, in 2001, Bennion and Deville opened up their own brokerage with the central mission of creating a client-first real estate experience through education, support and the empowerment of their network of real estate professionals. The full-service boutique brokerage quickly became a household name within the desert, greatly contributing to the overall elevation of real estate services within the Greater Palm Springs region. “We never planned on having a company as big as it has become,” says Deville. “When we started, we thought we’d have 15, maybe 20 agents. The reason it took off is because we were fresh, new and very professional.”

“We are real estate addicts, so, of course, we started looking at real estate in Palm Springs.” —B O B B EN N I O N

Bennion explains his thought process as a fellow leader, saying that he and Deville hire new agents based on integrity and overall attitude. As leaders of the brokerage, both men understand that in order to provide clients with a truly exceptional experience, they as leaders must first create an uplifting work environment for agents. Now, nearly 19 years later, Deville and Bennion are thankful for the successful expansion of Bennion Deville Homes. Being in charge of such a successful company isn’t an easy job and both owners are constantly reminded of the importance of staff feedback and support. Deville adds, “We never make a decision within the company without first discussing amongst ourselves how it will best serve our agents.” Looking towards the future, both Bennion and Deville plan to continue their focus on providing a truly unprecedented client experience through their comprehensive sales and marketing services. More importantly, Bennion Deville Homes wants to continue making clients’ dreams a reality through world-class innovation, collaboration and a genuine love for real estate.

SAN DIEGO BEST OF THE WESTS

For the

World Traveler Who’s Homesick for California You don’t have to travel to the Palace of Versailles to experience French antiques and tapestries, Persian rugs and crystal chandelier decor, as The Westgate Hotel San Diego offers all of that and then some. Situated in the heart of downtown San Diego, the 223-deluxe room (160 of those are kings) hotel offers an exodus to another world, waiting with open arms for the ideal staycation hug. And since that hug comes in a world that is decidedly French-inspired, it makes perfect sense that The Westgate offers a restaurant that is très chic. French-style architecture and decor spill over into The Westgate Room, where you’ll find savory beef tenderloin, as well as an array of seafood from lobster to Bay scallops paired with Baja Prawn. Delicious California cuisine with French influences certainly supports The Westgate’s emphasis on wellness, as stimulated taste buds and warm bellies are evidence of that. But The Westgate Hotel takes it to a whole new level with its AquaVie Spa. There are few places in the heart of a major city where you can find relaxation, peace and quiet, but the AquaVie Spa not only offers just that within its private walls, but also advanced wellness treatments. Since health is a theme for staycationers at The Westgate, you won’t be disappointed by the 40,000 square feet of “sleek custom-designed workout spaces” at the AquaVie Fitness + Wellness Club. Not only does it offer 200 cardio and weight machines, which eclipses most local gyms, but also spin classes, pool access and even a running track on the fourth floor, all of which allow you to zone out while you workout, and zone in on stunning downtown San Diego views. A GO O D WALK. . . SPO ILED? Ú Mark Twain said, “Golf is a good walk spoiled,” but he should’ve added that if the first tee is a short walk from your bed, golf becomes a walk improved. For the

Local in Search of the Perfect Staycation The friendly Westin staff offers a free shuttle service within a five-mile radius of the resort, and within that area is Carlsbad Village and no shortage of activities and food to keep you occupied. But that’s assuming you’d even want to leave the resort in the first place, as the Mediterraneanstyle hotel offers everything from entertainment to first class relaxation. After a day out at the beach or golfing at the adjacent The Crossings 18-hole golf course, you may want to take time to treat yourself at the Ocean Pearl Spa. Their healing body treatments are enhanced by products and methods inspired by the sea, relaxing visitors with services such as the Vitamin Sea Massage or the Mermaid Facial. And of course, what day would be complete without a world-class dinner eaten while watching a stunning sunset view? The 20|Twenty, named for the picturesque, near-panoramic view of the western sky, will have you warming up next to a fire pit while the ocean breeze kisses you as it blows through your hair. Locallysourced food is the restaurant trend these days, but 20|Twenty is a class above, proven by their constant rotation of ingredients and cocktails based on the best locally sourced ingredients. For the casual eater and drinker, The Westin Carlsbad also offers the 7 Mile Kitchen, which serves pizza and beer on tap—‘nough said. But the designers of this coastal retreat had Southern Californians in mind when they included a complete rental service for athletic gear. So if you want to use “forgetting your runners” as an excuse for not working out during your staycation, you’re fresh out of luck.

If Walls Could Talk THESE LIVING WALLS ARE BRIDGING AGRICULTURE AND DECOR FOR A NATURAL FLAIR

Stay Palm

• “I’ve always been intrigued by fishtail palms,” Wallace muses. “It’s one of those plants where you either love them or hate them.”

Plant-setter

• Wallace reveals the next trendy plants are Philodendron Monstera, Calathea varieties and Fabian Aralias.

WRITTEN BY: JANE ADLER PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NATHAN WHELAN

In the plant kingdom, one man reigns as king of the jungle. That man is Greg Wallace. Nearly 40 years ago, a seed was planted that Wallace grew into a blooming—eh hem— we mean booming business. Stemming from his own Southern California roots, Wallace took over an Orange County botanical business in 1980 and, what started as a simple side gig, developed into four decades of working in the field of plants, and his company, Instant Jungle, is still thriving today.

I

Instant Jungle is an industry leader when it comes to the latest plant furnishing trend: living walls. These installations act as living, breathing art that can complement any personal or public space. When it comes to choosing your living wall, there are three different types of applications (tray, module or TerraScreen wall) to consider after deciding whether the plants will live inside or outside. Design concepts and aesthetic are meticulously mulled over, and a method to frame the wall and how it will adhere to its new vertical home are picked. Depending on which system is chosen, a living wall can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to install from start to finish. Instant Jungle works hand-in-hand with landscapers

and customers to ensure that the wall is functional, aesthetically pleasing and matches its surroundings. This form of agricultural art can range in scope from a single wall to an entire rooftop and everything in between.

Greg Wallace CEO, Instant Jungle

“Plants create a nice environment and ambiance and they just really enhance [an area]. We stage with plants to soften things, make them look warm and friendly,” says Wallace. While the living walls still remain one of the top trends in the flora field, Wallace acknowledges that “architectural plants are really popular again…[they are] coming back and making a stronger statement because it also kind of ties in with the drought-tolerant trend.” If you recall, droughttolerant plants began sprouting like weeds with all sorts of species of succulents invading the industry. Wallace jokes, however, that “we’ve had rain and we have short-term memory,” so he predicts this trend may soon be watered down, so to speak. Wallace explains, “The cool thing is we can use anything that is on the property. We have different decorative containers. We have different ways to wrap [our plants]. We offer underplanting so you can do a forest, a jungle…we can create the whole element or illusion, whatever you want to create.”

A road trip

through the Canadian Rockies has always been on my bucket list, but it seemed so daunting that I postponed it until I was better equipped. Little did I know that there is something there for even the most novice of adventure seekers. From the turquoiseblue lakes and the towering jagged mountains to the abundant wildlife amid dense forest, this drive was undoubtedly the most scenic of my life. And if you’ve driven on the 74 Freeway in the summer months, navigating the stretch between Banff and Jasper is a piece of cake.

Banff Stay Ú A 90-minute drive from the Calgary airport, this little resort town is a perfect home base for exploring the surrounding area. Stay right in the heart of downtown at Mount Royal Hotel to be close to plenty of shops and restaurants, or for epic views of one of Banff’s most famous glacial lakes, experience the luxurious Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. MOUNT ROYAL HOTEL 138 Banff Ave, Banff, AB T1L 1A7 Canada 866.606.6700 | www.banffjaspercollection. com/hotels/mount-royal-hotel FAIRMONT CHATEAU LAKE LOUISE 111 Lake Louise Dr, Lake Louise, AB T0L 1E0 Canada 403.522.3511 | www.fairmont.com/lake-louise

Explore Ú Take the Banff Gondola to soak in a panoramic view of six mountain ranges from above. Pro tip: take the first gondola at 8:30 a.m. to secure a parking spot and have the viewing deck almost completely to yourself. The two most famous turquoise glacial lakes in the area are Lake Louise and Lake Moraine. Going later in the day in the summer (after 4 or 5 p.m.) is encouraged if you want to ditch the crowds, and since there is daylight until about 10 p.m. in the summer, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the sights. If you’re feeling adventurous, take on The Devil’s Thumb climbers’ trail—a 7.4-mile hike with an elevation gain of 2,897 feet—for an incredible view of both lakes at the top. If you’re like me and begin panting profusely at the slightest incline, the 1½-mile hike to Fairview Lookout at Lake Louise is good enough to catch a sight from above. STARTING LINE Ú When planning your trip, note that there will most likely be no snow or ice in the summer, but driving in the winter is a completely different story. If you are not experienced in driving through snow, I recommend going from June through August. If you are going back to Calgary, you will be taking the same road back, so plan for stops on the way up and the way down. We did the Icefield experience on the way up and explored Peyto and Moraine Lake on our way down.

PAY THE FEES TO SAVE THE TREES Ú Be sure to pay the Banff National Park and/or Jasper National Park fees when driving into the city. It’s easy to drive past the toll booths; there are open lanes for cars that already have passes, so keep an eye out. If you don’t have your ticket on your dash, you will be fined. WHY SO BLUE? Ú As a glacier melts into a lake, it scrapes the bedrock, creating sediments or glacial silt that causes the water to appear bright turquoise and milky.

The two most famous turquoise glacial lakes in the area are Lake Louise and Lake Moraine. Jasper Ú Once you finally make it to Jasper, book a stay at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, or for a little more rustic feel, drive a little further north to the secluded Overlander Mountain Lodge. Enjoy breakfast at the Sunhouse Cafe before making your way to Maligne Lake, one of the most Instagrammable places in Jasper National Park. FAIRMONT JASPER PARK LODGE 1 Old Lodge Rd, Jasper, AB T0E 1E0 Canada 780.852.3301 | www.fairmont.com/jasper

The Icefields Parkway Ú As you make your way up toward Jasper, you can catch a glimpse of Bow Lake from the road, and Peyto Lake is only a short 10-minute hike (and well worth the stop). The Icefields Parkway is the road between Banff and Jasper. It takes about 2 ½ hours to traverse, but you will want to stop about every five minutes because the views are that amazing, and you might spot a bear like we did! You can’t miss the receding Athabasca Glacier as you drive down the parkway. Ride in one of the massive buses up onto the glacier to see it up close or take a quick look at the bottom. If

you aren’t afraid of heights, a little bit down the road is the Columbia Icefield Skywalk, where you can step out onto a glass platform separating you from a 918-foot drop. Both of these experiences require a checkin and tickets at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, so book in advance. Also, keep in mind that these experiences will take a few hours, so be sure to factor that in when planning your day. Saving the World One Home at a Time

“Off the grid doesn’t mean rustic,” explains Ida Alwin, one of the owners of Baltic Sands Properties, an environmentally sensitive desert design company. The idea of fully sustainable homes was born in the winter of 2016, when Ewa & Jacques Marais came to the desert to visit Alwin, their niece. Today, Alwin is Owner and Operations Manager of the company, and Ewa Marais is the CEO. Marais is an interior designer whose work has been featured in many décor magazines and has designed homes for many years in South Africa. Alwin comes from a career in TV production in London. Her love for the desert brought her to Johnson Valley, California, where she built a prototype sustainable home.

“They’re completely solar powered… We use minisplits—one of the most energy efficient products on the market—to heat and cool the homes.” —Ida Alwin

“We were always interested in environmentally-sensitive housing, but Ida approached us with a business plan,” Marais says. “My husband and I thought it was a really great idea. Who better to partner with than somebody who’s as passionate about it as Ida?”

According to Alwin, Baltic Sands homes are completely 100 percent off-grid, and each has its own well. “They’re completely solar powered,” she points out. “We use mini-splits—one of the most energy efficient products on the market—to heat and cool the homes.” In addition to their ability to control the temperature in individual rooms, mini-splits utilize air purifiers, she adds. They’re powered by solar panels, and energy is converted from the solar panels to the homes. Each home also comes with its own backup generator.

According to Alwin, Baltic Sands homes are completely 100 percent off-grid, and each has its own well.

“We were always interested in environmentally sensitive housing.” —Ewa Marais Home Sweet Home • Who is Baltic Sands’ ideal home buyer? “Because we’re not building in highly populated areas, they’re usually vacation or secondary homes,” Alwin states. “Or people who run businesses like Airbnb.” Good for All • Marais notes that as their company expands, they would like to build homes for people in various economic brackets. “In the future, we could build sustainable low-cost cabins for communities in rural areas.” 94 LOCALE MAGAZINE

The first Baltic Sands home, JT1, sold very quickly as an Airbnb property, and JT2 is currently on the market at $799,000. Both have sleek, contemporary designs, an open floor plan and high ceilings. Two more sustainable homes are being designed in nearby Pioneertown, in addition to a third in Joshua Tree. “We have a strong vision,” says Alwin. “We want to bring off-grid, sustainable living to a mass market.”

“ALL OUR EMPLOYEES ARE TRAINED TO BE ‘GOLDEN’

EVERY DAY. WE’RE FRIENDLY,

By the luck of the draw, JEF BAUER fell into the gaming industry. While attending the University of Nevada in 1987, the journalism student applied as a “sportswriter” at Harrah’s Reno. He quickly learned that he would be writing bet tickets for the casino’s race and sportsbook. What started as a summer gig turned into a career that has spanned more than 30 years. At Augustine Casino, Bauer continues to up the ante as general manager at one of Coachella Valley’s favorite local casinos, which includes 800 slot machines, eight gaming tables, two restaurants and two bars all serviced by nearly 400 employees.

WARM, WELCOMING AND A REAL VALUE. NO ONE

ELSE IN THIS MARKET IS

GOING AFTER THAT, AND WE CONTINUE TO OWN IT.” —JEF BAUER

Bauer worked his way up the ladder in leadership roles at Harrah’s Entertainment, Majestic Star Casino in Indiana, Golden Casino Group in Colorado and MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa at Lake Tahoe, Nevada where he was handson in nearly every corner of operations— from front of house at restaurants and nightclubs to overall marketing strategies.

B

Bauer became an in-demand player in the gaming industry due to his innate ability to take fledgling casinos and transform them into high-performing entertainment destinations, which was precisely why he was brought on as the head honcho at Augustine Casino in 2013. Over the last six years, Bauer ushered in structure and stability with new leadership, putting the enterprise on an upswing. He was also instrumental in boosting staff morale by working with the tribe to raise team members’ hourly pay and add a company-matched 401(k) retirement plan. 98 LOCALE MAGAZINE

RAISE THE STEAKS Ú From firsttime guests to returning regulars, Bauer recommends budget-friendly food options at the Casino’s two restaurants, Menyikish Grill and Café 54, which offer $3.95 burger or taco lunch combos. Weekends roll out a sensational seafood buffet including all-youcan-eat baked lobster tails, filet mignon, Duck à l’Orange, New York Steak, prime rib, crab legs and dessert.

FAMILY MATTERS Ú In his downtime from Augustine Casino, you’ll find the father of three, with one more on the way this fall, and his wife hiking and exploring the Coachella Valley, playing tennis, enjoying music and movies and spending quality time with family. GIVING BACK Ú Every December, the Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians hosts a holiday toy and food drive at its casino to benefit local families. The Ophelia Project, Coachella Valley Boxing Gym, Martha’s Village and Galilee Center are just some of the local charities the tribe supports year-round. All combined, the tribe contributed $4 million to Coachella Valley philanthropic initiatives over the last 15 years.

OVER THE LAST SIX YEARS, BAUER USHERED IN STRUCTURE AND STABILITY WITH NEW LEADERSHIP, PUTTING THE ENTERPRISE ON AN UPSWING.

Adding these benefits to health coverage, paid time off and free shift meals led high-turnover jobs to become careers with longevity. “The last 20 years of my career have been focused on turnarounds. Anytime an operation seems to be on the backslide—and that can be from a number of factors, from the economy to leadership—that’s usually when I’ll get the call to come fix the problem,” Bauer said. “But even before eyeballing changes, I like to learn the market, learn the customer, learn the team and then after that assessment, make the changes that are going to move the operation forward.”

A

Under Bauer’s leadership, Augustine Casino is enjoying record-breaking prosperity and was twice named Business of the Year in 2015 and 2017 by the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce, as well as garnering favorable local reader poll and business awards. “We’re a local’s place. Our entire strategy is to provide the best value to our customers that we possibly can. And that is how we compete— 100 LOCALE MAGAZINE

with value and service,” Bauer explains. “All our employees are trained to be ‘golden’ every day. We’re friendly, warm, welcoming and a real value. No one else in this market is going after that, and we continue to own it.” Although Augustine Casino is on a roll, Bauer’s not ready to cash in his chips just yet. As a farm kid from South Dakota who connected with Native American culture since his youth, Bauer feels at home with the Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians, who built more than just a successful gaming empire in the Coachella Valley. In addition to the 25,000 solar panels that power the casino, the tribe operates a 33-acre sustainable organic farm growing Medjool dates, romaine lettuce and other vegetables on tribal land. “One of the reasons I’m still here is because I love this tribe,” Bauer said. “I really love the way they’ve innovated, they’ve persevered and the way they treat their casino workers. The tribe is on a resurgence because of the prosperity of the casino and I love being a part of that. I’m really proud to work for them.”

Dream a little dream of the Dazey Desert House in Palm Springs. Teeming with playful colors and patterns, the rental home is the interior masterpiece designed by Danielle Nagel. As the entrepreneur who started the wildly popular clothing company, Dazey LA, Nagel recently dipped her toes into a new endeavor: interior design.

The Dazey Desert House is the first product of Nagel’s culmination of creative talents. Originally designed by notable architect William Krisel, the home vibrates style at its core.

“It was pretty much turn-key when we got it,” says Nagel. “We loved the orange door and the orange accents. It’s so inline with my super colorful clothing line.” A butterfly roof that brings in an abundance of natural light is the icing on the cake. The supporting windows gradually grow in size as the roof curves up at a triangular incline. “All these details that were just beautiful, simple and clean really made the space unique and functional,” Nagel raves. The home’s thoughtful design, rooted in modernist history, felt like an instant fit to Nagel, whose family is from the area. Originally, Nagel and her boyfriend, Phillip Butler, had been looking to purchase in Los Angeles, but when the pair was in town for Modernism Week last year, the idea to invest in a reasonably-priced vacation home came to life. “It was just the cutest house I had ever seen,” Nagel says. “All the architects are household names in this community. It’s like owning a piece of art.” The house is rented out for vacationers to enjoy, but it also serves as a photoshoot space. Nagel’s knowledge from photographing her own clothing line has informed her design, allowing her the insight to keep the space cohesive— while also dynamic enough for separate shots. Sprinkled with eclectic, old and new furnishings and décor, the Dazey Desert House is every midcentury lover’s dream come true, and then some. “Midcentury design—there’s nothing like it. It was an era where they put so much thought and care into all of the details,” she says. Nagel describes how she took a step away from the norm and infused a harmony of deep oranges, reds and blues into the design. The color theme makes its way through each room as a unifying thread, along with geometric motifs reflected in starburst mirrors and casual mud cloth throw pillows. The end result is an energetic space bursting with optimism, yet still enough room for a subdued respite from the all-encompassing desert heat. 104 LOCALE MAGAZINE

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN MOD-INSPIRED ART WALL Danielle Nagel’s Step-By-Step to Creating the Perfect Midcentury Gallery Art Wall

T

The wall in the Dazey Desert House, engages every visitor in an alluring dialogue. The visual interchange between pattern, shape and color enriches the space with pleasant chatter that makes you want to join in on the conversation. After just one glance at Nagel’s design, you’ll be convinced that walls do, in fact, talk.

The eight pieces of artwork that comprise the Desert House’s gallery wall were originally created by Nagel’s late grandmother. As a special tribute to her, Nagel made the gallery wall the standout feature of the home; it’s the part of the house that always prompts a discussion, she says. How did Nagel create such an eye-catching gallery wall? We uncovered a few of her tips.

Step 1:

• “Establish a loose theme. For example, [in the Dazey Desert House] they’re all portraits of women and florals. I specifically picked these pieces because they all had a similar color story. So, they’re all tied together by their colors and the subject.”

Step 2:

• “You want to make sure you get art in different sizes to give some variety, otherwise, your gallery wall is going to look pretty sterile and boring!”

Step 3:

• “If you want to mix it up, you could definitely have an art print thrown in. I would just say to make sure you have at least a complementary piece to tie it all together.”

Step 5:

• “If you have Photoshop skills, I actually took a picture of the arrangement on the ground, and then I superimposed it on the wall to make sure I liked it.”

Step 6:

• “Try to keep it within a square shape—but also have some pieces stick out a little bit. For example, if you have a piece sticking out a little bit on the top right, you should probably have a piece sticking out on the lower left just to balance it, but also make sure it’s not too perfect-looking.”

Step 4:

• “Make sure you lay it out on the ground the way you want it to be and photograph it before you put it up on the wall. It’s also helpful to measure the distance between [the frames]. You’re already putting so many holes in your wall, so it helps to get it right.”

Sprinkled with eclectic, old and new furnishings and décor, the Dazey Desert House is every midcentury lover’s dream come true, and then some.

Bennion Deville Homes Agents Ryan Pylypow and Constantine Kolytiris are proudly showcasing this 4-bedroom and 4.5-bathroom estate. Pylypow describes the location of the property by explaining, “You’re 15 minutes from the airport, 20 minutes from Downtown Palm Springs and 10 minutes from El Paseo.” Architect David Prest, of the esteemed Prest Vuksic Architects, designed the contemporary masterpiece with the goal of paying homage to the picturesque desert landscape surrounding the estate. Prest Vuksic Architects may sound familiar due to the architecture firm’s impressive portfolio of projects, including the Living Desert Zoo, that can be seen throughout the valley and beyond. Prest nicknamed the property Star Point due to the home’s elevated positioning, which is 800 feet above the valley floor. Situated on one of the highest lots within the Mirada Estates community, 45 Sky Ridge Rd was designed to accentuate the extensive city views, while still maintaining a sense of privacy and tranquility throughout the home. Upon exiting US Highway 111 onto the palm tree-lined Frank Sinatra Drive, individuals curve uphill and are greeted by the 24-hour guard-gated entrance into the Mirada Estates community. Within eyesight of Mirada’s gated entrance is the breathtaking Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage, a pristine desert oasis with an abundance of amenities, including a world-class spa, fitness center and exceptional concierge services. Once through the neighborhood’s front gates, it’s just a short distance up the hillside to arrive at Sky Ridge Road. Star Point is situated at the end of the cul-de-sac, with a commanding desert-toned stone facade and stucco finish adorning the exterior

entrance to the estate. Verdant droughttolerant landscaping decorates the estate’s tan exterior, creating a beautiful juxtaposition of color. The home itself encompasses 6,586 square feet on the 0.77 acre lot, allowing for a generous amount of both indoor and outdoor living space. Slate steps welcome individuals toward an ornate metal and glass door entrance, constructed of translucent glass and framed with camel-colored wood trim. The door opens up to a serene central courtyard with a beautiful turquoise contemporary water feature to the left of the stone pathway. To the right, desert plants border the pathway, guiding individuals towards the floor-to-ceiling glass-paneled wall. One panel opens to allow immediate access to the central room. Once inside, the eye is immediately drawn to the endless views of the valley below, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling pocket doors lining the wall of the great room. With the simple push of a button, the pocket doors glide open, allowing the indoor and outdoor spaces to seamlessly coexist as one. “Being able to open those walls of glass and look out on that view, whether it is daytime or nighttime... It’s just an amazing vista,” says Pylypow. A sleek, abalone-colored fireplace and light cherry wood floor adorn the central living space, emanating a sense of coziness and pure relaxation. In addition, a custom-built wet bar, with room for five guests, provides the homeowner with an area to entertain. The estate’s furnishings were custom-designed by esteemed interior designer Jeff Jurasky, with the goal of ensuring every piece properly complemented each unique space. Star Point is being sold furnished per inventory, indicating buyers have the option

of purchasing the home with the custom-built furniture. Adjacent to the central living area is a dining room that seats 10 individuals comfortably. Floor-to-ceiling windows face outward toward the nearby mountains, allowing guests to truly enjoy the serene desert landscape from the convenience of the dining room. Craftsman stonework reappears in the kitchen, complete with custom-built, birchcolored cabinets and updated stainless-steel appliances. A central island with beigecolored granite countertops provides the homeowner with additional seating options. The master bedroom, located just down the hallway from the great room, is a dream come true with its numerous luxury amenities. From the double-sided central fireplace to the magnificent wood backdrop over the master bed, every detail was carefully designed with leisure in mind. Three additional bedrooms within the estate provide the homeowner with the ability to accommodate visiting guests. Upon exiting through the multiple glasspaneled pocketing doors, individuals are charmed with one of the most essential aspects of any luxury desert home—an infinity pool. The watery oasis is framed by the same stone found in the kitchen, along with colorful, drought-tolerant greenery that creates an essence of natural vitality. Two separate outdoor fireplaces are added to the list of amenities, providing individuals with a place to gaze up at the stars and roast marshmallows. 45 Sky Ridge Road is truly a one-of-a-kind contemporary masterpiece, exemplifying elevated desert living. The phrase “You can’t have your cake and eat it, too,” doesn’t really apply here, does it? In fact, it looks like you can have your cake, eat it and reap its benefits too. Tura is the perfect brew with the benefits of kombucha and the crisp bite you expect from an alcoholic beverage. While all kombucha naturally contains alcohol, Tura takes an additional step to create this certified organic, gluten-free kombucha that is four percent ABV and only 120 calories, making it the best alternative to beer since beer itself. Tura was developed by a humble team of kombucha enthusiasts led by Product Developer Annette Fritsch. Brewed in small batches

It’s that spirit and dedication that birthed Tura’s natural greatness.

From an early age, Andie Hubka always knew she wanted to cook: “It was a passion. I read cookbooks instead of comic books.” Growing up in Los Angeles, she worked through various restaurant positions, enrolled in culinary arts school and started her own catering business. Since moving to the desert, Hubka has opened Cooking With Class, Cork & Fork and Heirloom Craft Kitchen, soon to be followed by Tu Madres Grill & Cantina. It’s a portfolio of creative, contemporary concepts that are shaking up tradition and generating quite a buzz on the eastside of the Coachella Valley.

F

It’s not often a story flows as naturally as Hubka’s. While catering, Hubka started conducting classes in other peoples’ homes—that inspired Cooking With Class, a fun, “recreational cooking school,” with dinner included. When the adjacent building became available, Hubka used it to add wine dinners. That idea grew into Cork & Fork, serving “international small plates and interesting wines.” While Cork & Fork is an elevated, evening concept, Heirloom was created to offer a faster, more casual version of that. And, when the Mexican restaurant next door to Heirloom closed, Hubka saw the opportunity for Tu Madres. 116 LOCALE MAGAZINE

She’ll bring that same philosophy to Tu Madres. “It’s modern Mexican—lots of seafood, healthy, vegan options, prepared with fresh, organic ingredients.” Hubka has spent a great deal of time in Mexico over the past year, and it’s a scene that inspires her. “Mexico’s culinary scene is off the charts. It’s not Mexican food like Americans understand it. It’s very Mediterranean, beautiful, clean food, a lot of local produce and fish. At some restaurants, everything on the plate has come from within a mile. You can’t get any fresher than that.” An entrepreneur with four restaurants, Hubka is also an active philanthropist, working with charities like FIND Food Bank. She frequently auctions herself as a guest chef, one recent suitor donating $12,000. She’s almost halfway to her goal of raising $1 million.

Hubka’s concepts are modern, creative and international with an emphasis on fresh, organic ingredients. Everything is made from scratch and she loves the valley’s “tremendous” local agriculture. “In terms of produce, the valley has everything.” Her affinity for local ingredients includes a stint as spokesperson and chef for the California Date Commission. “Not many people were into dates back then, but now they’ve become a part of the modern food lexicon.”

Having spent her formative years in Los Angeles volunteering for some of the area’s best chefs and working glitzy events like the Academy Awards, Hubka arrived at a Palm Springs scene that lacked energy. “When I first started, there weren’t many interesting restaurants. It was mostly steakhouses and hotels.” Now, it’s changed. “Palm Springs has arrived as a culinary destination, but there’s still a need on this side of town. My goal is to provide people with interesting restaurants on the valley’s east side.”

AT

Her philanthropy also reaches the next generation. In addition to fundraising and special events, she offers internships to four students of the La Quinta High School culinary program every year. Most of those students work for her after graduation or have gone on to culinary school. “It’s been very rewarding. I love working with the kids and they’re great employees.” Hubka has two daughters, and finding the right balance is challenging. Working alongside her husband and juggling between the restaurants and the kids, they try to take advantage of any time they can. “This last year was the hardest work year in my life. As soon as I open the new restaurant, I plan to step back and be a little more balanced.” She’s been judicious to create a workable formula. All her restaurants are within a one-mile radius and are based on a model of “easily manageable, smaller footprints.” In order to develop and grow, Hubka travels frequently. She lauds Los Angeles as the best food city in the country, and travels internationally, always bringing back a variety of new ingredients. “Travel really translates into how we change our menu. It’s the best way to be part of the growing trends. You have to experience the food. It’s an expensive hobby, but it’s the best way—and it’s fun.” Hubka’s constant quest for knowledge is reflected in her dynamic cuisine, and it’s something she goes out of her way to share. From an entertaining cooking school to two selfpublished cookbooks, she shares her recipes freely. “A lot of chefs I interned with weren’t into sharing secrets. I try to be the anti-chef and say, ‘Here’s everything you need to know.’” Stay tuned; Hubka isn’t done yet. “I’m going to keep going until I can’t anymore. My goal is to bring great food to the valley and put the valley on the map as a culinary destination.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 117

“It’s Southern Italian cuisine,” General Manager Carlos Rocha explains. “Simple, traditional ingredients like tomato sauce, and light on the garlic.”

Rocha went on to explain that it’s a common misconception about Italian food being heavy on garlic, while creamy dishes are more common in Northern Italy. “Mario’s dishes are simple, with a light touch of garlic, olive oil, tomatoes and vegetables,” he adds. They do prepare some dishes from Northern Italy, but it’s predominantly Sicilian. Rocha recommends the seafood, which is simply grilled with a touch of garlic and olive oil. The dover sole is particularly appealing, as the servers debone it tableside. Another favorite is the Mediterranean sea bass, prepared all’isolana—grilled then finished in the oven with tomatoes, black olives and a white wine sauce. During our visit, Rocha featured the bavette all’astice and the filetto al peppe verde as dishes he calls “representative of Mario’s cuisine: simple, delicious, and hugely popular.”

FOOD • Il Corso serves an authentic variety of Southern Italian cuisine, from woodfired pizzas and pasta, to steaks and grilled seafood. SWEET BEGINNINGS • Chef Mario Marfia’s first restaurant was Tiramisu, which should give you a serious hint at what dessert to try.

DECOR • It’s an LA progressive buzz: rustic stone walls and wooden floorboards, with transparent glass dividers, an open kitchen and a precisely curated dining room.

Bavette all’astice is a lobster pasta dish. They take a Maine lobster tail, chop it and sear it, adding cherry tomatoes, arugula, linguine pasta and a white wine sauce. The shell of the lobster tail decorates the dish. The pasta is cooked perfectly al dente, and the lobster is tender, mild in flavor, with a lightly smoked char from the pan. It’s a nice blend of oil, sweetness and smoke against the tasty flavor of the lobster.

PRICE • Dinner prices run from $20 pastas to the $90 shareable beef Florentina. Lowerpriced items are available in the bar and during lunch.

The filetto is an eight-ounce prime filet mignon topped with a green peppercorn sauce. The sauce is made up of shallots, brandy, butter and a secret medley of

additional ingredients. The steak has a lightly charred outer and perfectly tender, soft interior—it’s an exemplary cut by itself. The dish is served with mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus that just epitomizes the concept: fresh, crisp and lightly charred, with a delicate seasoning of olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper. The filet and the sauce combine to find that perfect balance of rich, decadent flavor without being overwhelming. Il Corso’s breads, pizza dough, pastas and sauces are all made from scratch. Be sure to stick around for the signature homemade tiramisu or cannoli. Chef Marfia and his son, Claudio, are both pastry chefs. Delizioso! 118 LOCALE MAGAZINE

PINK YOUR TEETH INTO MOROCCAN AND MEDITERRANEAN-INFLUENCED DISHES

The Mediterranean concept and French brasserie setting are what attracted Executive Chef Jason Niederkorn. “My backbone is modern French. We start from there and decide which direction to take it, whether it’s a Moroccan influence or a Mediterranean influence,” Chef Niederkorn says.

He describes his menu as “ingredientdriven,” with products that “you’re not going to find anywhere in the valley.” Most of the fish is line-caught and flown overnight from where it landed, and the oysters come directly from the source rather than a distributor.

WRITTEN BY: ANDREW SMITH • PHOTOGRAPHED BY: LAURA PERKINS

FAMOUS TRACES • The hotel and restaurant were designed by Martyn Lawrence Bullard, known from the Bravo TV series “Million Dollar Decorators” and Channel 4’s “Hollywood Me.”

“Some of the ingredients are second to none in the area,” adds Chef Niederkorn. With an eye towards freshness and creativity, the menu receives a major quarterly overhaul. But there are mainstays, signatures and local favorites.

• Chef Jason Niederkorn has crafted a fresh and creative mix of Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisine.

DECOR • The décor is one of the Coachella Valley’s mustsee attractions, drawing on the Palm Springs post-modern era.

The Pink Cabana hosts an outstanding weekend brunch and a more casual lunch, but it’s the dinner menu that epitomizes the more creative, upscale elements. The Cabana Meze is a popular appetizer; it contains grilled yogurt naan, hummus and cured, pasteurized olives, which are all aged and prepared in-house. “It’s a fun dish to share and you’ll see one on almost every table,” notes Chef Niederkorn. The harissa chicken is a favorite and mainstay among the dinner entrees, epitomizing much of the restaurant’s ethnic influence and authenticity.

PRICE

Chef Niederkorn’s personal favorite is the tagine of Colorado lamb shank. “It’s a dish I first created 10 years ago. I was really drawn to the balance of sweet, spicy and sour flavors.” Tagine is a classic Moroccan dish—typically a stew of spiced meat and vegetables—slow-cooked in a round dish

with a tall, conical lid. Chef Niederkorn’s tagine is a slow-braised lamb shank, prepared in the traditional style and served in the same earthenware that gives the dish its name. He has the proprietary harissa spice blend prepared locally and does not divulge the full ingredients. Although conceived as a lamb dish, Chef Niederkorn first introduced it to the restaurant as a beef short rib. Now, the dish is served exactly as it was created. With a variety of seafood, steaks and vegetarian options, The Pink Cabana is a showcase of creatively crafted cuisine. It’s a theme that extends to the bar, too, where you’ll find handcrafted cocktails infused with fresh and unique ingredients, artisanal liquor and esoteric wines. 120 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey is unlike any sushi you’ll ever experience. As one of the world’s top sushi chefs, Chef Engin Onural both respects and transcends tradition. At Sandfish, he’s incorporating his second passion— Scandinavian cuisine.

FOOD • Sandfish’s menu is an entirely unique fusion of Japanese sushi and Scandinavian culture.

“It’s a fusion entirely unique to Chef Engin,” General Manager Omar Diaz enthused. Chef Engin frequently travels, bringing back an assortment of ingredients to incorporate into his cuisine. The Scandinavian experience starts with the décor and scatters accents across the menu. There’s a traditional sushi menu for purists, but the real flair is in the signature rolls and dishes. Our tasting started with scallops on the half shell, garnished with walnuts, a yuzu vinaigrette and sea beans. The scallops were tender and nicely chilled with a sweet, lightly salted flavor, and the yuzu vinaigrette offers a light zest, while the walnuts and sea beans (actually greens, not beans) offer a crunchy and salty contrast. It’s a dish that’s light and refreshing, perfect for the desert climate. Next was the octopus carpaccio with preserved lemon, citron oil, herb oil, chives, microgreens and sesame seeds. The octopus (from Thailand) has a fresh, clean taste with a hint of sea salt. The chives and microgreens lend a nice touch of spice and a crisp texture. Chef Engin is a big advocate for his microgreens. “They’re my most expensive ingredient, intensely flavored and highly nutritious,” the chef raves. It’s another light, fresh dish that plays well against the citrus, herbs and greenery. The Sandfish Roll is their bestseller; it’s got both the name and a show-stealing

presentation. Spicy tuna and crab meat make up the roll, which is then topped with a forestry of microgreens, green onions and lightly fried potato threads. It’s then drizzled with spicy aioli, teriyaki and black truffle zest. The spicy tuna—mixed with Sriracha and pure Japanese sesame oil—is a highlight. Chef Engin explains that Japanese sesame oil “doesn’t have the burnt flavor you find in other versions.” The sushi is exceptional, and the combination of microgreens and truffle zest bring an extra element of decadence.

• Chef Engin is a creative genius, preparing the best sushi you’re likely to experience.

Chef Engin calls Sandfish “a whiskey bar that serves sushi.” With an extensive Japanese whiskey list, sake and a highly knowledgeable bartender, you’ll find infinite permutations to elevate your experience.

La Famiglia • You won’t find a revolving door of staff at Ristorante Mamma Gina. Chef Tony Gonzales and so many of the 55 employees have been working here for years, even decades, to the point they know their regulars’ favorite pastas and treat them like famiglia. Red vs. White • The myth of only drinking a full-body red wine in cooler months and chilled white wine during the summer is an outdated notion. Owner Olivia Pierattoni said, “It’s really based on your preference, what you like, regardless of the season.” Ristorante Mamma Gina offers an extensive list of both red and white wines from local California wineries to Italian vineyards.

Old World Italian tradition is alive and well, and perhaps the most delicious part of the Mamma Gina experience. Most menu items have been savory staples, including the Veal alla Zingara, since Chef Tony joined the restaurant when it opened in 1986. A dozen ingredients go into making this carne dish, one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes. Fresh vegetables including red and green bell peppers, onions, mushrooms and capers are sautéed in extra virgin olive oil. Parsley and garlic, along with a dash of salt and pepper, complement the tender veal glazed in white wine and homemade tomato sauce. Dinner is also balanced with sides of whipped mashed potatoes and sautéed garlic spinach.

Then a young college student, Chef Tony was jogging on El Paseo in the mid-’80s when he bumped into a man cleaning the storefront windows at Mamma Gina’s. With some cooking experience at his previous job, Chef Tony asked if the restaurant was hiring. Indeed it was, and with just days away from the grand opening, help was needed in the kitchen. Chef Tony was hired on the spot by the window cleaner himself—Owner Piero Pierattoni. That chance encounter on the street led to a culinary career for Chef Tony that spans more than three decades. “People think it’s unusual I’ve only had two jobs in my lifetime,” said Chef Tony. “But here I am, 33 years later and I can’t think of working anywhere else.” Chef Tony mastered the old recipes Piero brought to Palm Desert from his Tuscan homeland. Now as head chef, he oversees a dozen kitchen staff training them to cook with the same devotion to every dish, from the linguine alla puttanesca to the signature Capellini Piero, just like he learned from Mamma Gina’s beloved owner. It’s that attention to detail, from perfecting a plate of half-moon ravioli to spot cleaning windows, that Piero brought to the table, making Ristorante Mamma Gina a favorite among families to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays and other life milestones with loved ones. Since his passing, Piero’s legacy of uniting families over food lives on through his daughter and current Owner Olivia Pierattoni, her brother Jake and mother Kathleen, who continue to run the restaurant—as well as Chef Tony, who is keeping the Tuscan tradition alive in the kitchen.

Art From the Heart

• In addition to home accessories inspired from Melissa and Ray’s world travels, ZENSE Home also features statement jewelry pieces by a local Coachella Valley designer.

• Want to liven up your living space? Melissa recommends adding a pop of color: “Desert hues are generally neutral and beige. Bright accent colors can make a big impact.”

If the name ZENSE sounds familiar, that’s because you’ll recognize the specialty women’s boutique on El Paseo next door owned by Penny Gundry. ZENSE Home is an extension of the accessory enterprise, run by Gundry’s daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and her husband Ray. Within their own shop, Melissa and Ray try to offer truly uncommon decor, just as her mother offers incredible statement jewelry. “We really try to unearth unique outside-the-box pieces,” said Melissa. “It’s got to speak to us in a playful, fun way.” The first-time look inside ZENSE Home could be perceived as an art gallery. The open-concept showroom is flanked on both sides with white shelves holding colorful, curious objects. There’s a lot to visually digest, from rainbow-splattered ceramic elephants to a pair of green and yellow ceramic gummy bears. The pieces are so delightfully original, and they beckon you closer to examine them. For instance, a vase might have the illusion of glass, but upon a second look and soft touch—and to much surprise—its rubber material won’t shatter into a hundred pieces if you drop it on the floor.

You might call Melissa and Ray Perko interior designers, or maybe art entrepreneurs, but ‘home decor aficionados’ is perhaps the most colorful way to describe this Palm Desert couple. That’s because the Perkos are collectors and sellers of some of the most eclectic home accent design pieces on the market, scouring the globe in search of uncommon objects that liven up living spaces and bring it home to ZENSE Home. 136 LOCALE MAGAZINE

The openconcept showroom is flanked on both sides with white shelves holding colorful, curious objects.

Fun pieces like this faux-glass vase are part of the ZENSE Home collection, personally selected by the Perkos from artisans around the world. The zanier the better—much of the pieces are brilliant, bright and pop with color, reflective of this spirited couple’s personalities. As a team, Melissa and Ray both agree to like something in order to feature it in the store. Luckily, the couple has a lot in common, like their eccentric taste in art and interior design. Melissa and Ray met in 2008 on El Paseo while Ray was managing Bud Johnson Design. They crossed paths often and romance blossomed. They married in 2011 and became business partners in November 2018 with the grand opening of ZENSE Home. Eight years later, the couple is still as affectionate as newlyweds, celebrating their summer anniversary in Las Vegas. Being surrounded by delicate objects all day, Ray would blow off steam by racing motocross bikes. Last year, he was injured in a horrific accident and landed in the hospital with a broken back. These days, Ray’s time is spent at the store curating art pieces rather than tearing it up on the racecourse. Recovered but retired from the sport he loved, Ray’s focus shifted back to his passion for art, and he geared up for the store’s second season. Still, the accident had a profound effect on Ray; he sees each day as a gift and is grateful to grow the store with Melissa. His gratitude is evident as he strides around the gallery floor elated about porcelain cherries, which he predicts will

be a hot seller this season. “Artificial fruit is really popular right now. And look at this,” he said, picking up pottery of red, green and yellow peppers in various sizes. “People appreciate their uniqueness. Even though we’re on El Paseo, we’re for every price point.”

“Even though we’re on El Paseo, we’re for every price point.”—Ray Perko

Ray is also taking more chances in life, like taking a working trip over the summer to Europe. Before the accident, he had little interest in traveling, but now that he’s fully recovered, the couple embarked to Paris and Florence hunting for unique treasures for the start of the store’s second season. What they brought back has remained a secret until the store’s reopening in October. Melissa and Ray are excited for the rush of the fall season and eager to lure shoppers in with their rare finds. Oftentimes, returning customers bring in photos of a piece purchased from the store’s collection to show the owners how well it accents their home. “I just love that,” Ray gushed. “I love to see how people make it their own.” “It’s the loyal clientele that keeps us going. We love the people; they’re friends,” added Melissa. “What’s our goal for the future? Longevity. We want to be here a long time. It’s really a neat street.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 137

Revvin’ up the Revero RIDE IN STYLE WITH THE 2020 KARMA REVERO GT

WRITTEN BY: AMEIHIA TURINGAN

Since its inception five years ago, Southern Californiabased KARMA Automotive has aimed to help shape the future of driving through its vehicles and business direction. With the 2020 luxury electric hybrid KARMA Revero GT, KARMA Automotive offers new levels of innovation by utilizing improved design, technology and performance capabilities for higher functionality.

Origin Story • The original KARMA Revero was based on the Fisker Karma, incorporating much of its original design and aesthetic.

New Beginnings • KARMA Automotive started in 2014 and is headquartered in Irvine.

T

A BMW TwinPower Turbo, three-cylinder, in-line engine powers an on-board electric generator to keep the Revero going for up to an additional 280 miles, giving the car a total range of up to 360 miles. The enhanced technology found in the 2020 Revero GT also improves zero to 60 miles per hour performance; the car will hit that mark in 4.5 seconds, nearly a full second faster than the model it replaces. “We created a world-class electric [hybrid] vehicle drive system that delivers the performance and packaging requirements

of the new Revero,” says Bob Kruse, KARMA’s Chief Technology Officer. “Alongside a series of other technological advancements, the new 2020 Revero is as fast as it looks.” In terms of interior design and function, KARMA Revero’s interior comes with sixway adjustable seats. Each vehicle can be customized to the customer’s liking as the Scottish leather comes in eight different colors and three multi-colored themes. The Revero is equipped with features like 3D touch steering wheel controls, parking assist and an eight-speaker audio system for a quality driving experience. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa and Google Home help Reverso drivers and riders stay connected on the road. “The KARMA brand is driven in part by owner experiences that are both personal and special,” says John Maloney, KARMA’s Chief Revenue Officer. “We believe ownership is about more than just our beautiful Revero GT—it’s about becoming part of our brand and connecting with those who stand behind it.”

Show and Tell • KARMA Automotive showcased the Karma Revero GT, along with the KARMA Pininfarina GT and KARMA SC1 Vision Concept at Auto Shanghai in April 2019.

The 2020 KARMA Revero GT is an electric hybrid vehicle that the company calls “a bridge to the future.” KARMA’s team of designers and engineers worked on the new car to provide essential redesign, technology improvements and elevated aesthetics. The new Revero is now 357 pounds lighter due to its aluminum base structure, and a refined dual-motor electric propulsion system that increases all-electric range up to 80 miles when fully charged.

“We really want to change the CBD market and our community with our products. And we have a number of ways we’re doing that with our innovation, our unique products and the charities we work with.” —Todd Erwin, Co-Founder of NanoCraft CBD

ALIVE

In a new market scene that is literally ablaze with a constant influx of new products, San Diego-based NANOCRAFT CBD has set themselves apart from others trying to make a name for themselves in the cannabidiol arena. Not only do they use top-quality, hemp-derived CBD products scientifically engineered for “the athlete in all of us,” but NanoCraft also sets itself apart with their dedication to philanthropy through their charitable organization, NanoCraft Kids.

Going With the Flow • The idea for NanoCraft CBD was actually born out of Erwin and McKellar’s original idea for a business venture—they wanted to create and market CBD-infused coconut water. As they worked to develop and scale their business idea, they branched out beyond just creating a line of waters into a full range of CBD products.

“We really want to change the CBD market and our community with our products,” says NanoCraft CBD Co-Founder Todd Erwin. “And we have a number of ways we’re doing that with our innovation, our unique products and the charities we work with.” Erwin and his business partner, Stefan McKellar, founded NanoCraft CBD three years ago with an ambitious mission. They wanted to change the perception of CBD products and help people see the benefits they provide. They wanted to disassociate from the negative stigma that has attached itself to marijuana and identify as an industry leader in the health and fitness market. Simple education was one of their greatest obstacles—consumers needed to know that CBD products aren’t synonymous with weed. “We really want to stop people in their tracks. We need to be able to address the misconceptions and be able to tell people, ‘No, this isn’t the same thing as weed. CBD is different, and here’s why, in order to get them to recognize the benefits of our products,” Erwin explains. 160 LOCALE MAGAZINE

H2-Oh! • NanoCraft waters will soon be available in three varieties: CBD water, CBD Energy water and CBD Recovery water. These waters are gluten-free, vegetarian, organic and non-GMO. They contain only CBD derived from hemp. What’s Next? • As the market changes to adapt to the widespread use of CBD products, Erwin and McKellar are hoping to get their products on the shelves of big box stores like CVS, Wal-Mart and GNC, as well as popular gyms and fitness centers.

THC vs. CBD • Tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol are the two primary cannabinoids that occur naturally in marijuana plants. THC is the agent responsible for the “high” that recreational marijuana users experience. CBD, on the other hand, is nonpsychoactive and does not have these effects.

“We work hard to make sure that every part of our user experience is excellent, from our packaging to our website, and of course the taste.” —Stefan McKellar, Co-Founder of NanoCraft CBD

By harnessing the health benefits that CBD offers, without the “high” that THC provides, the pair believes they can blend science and nature to benefit everyone’s well-being. Their line is unique and varied, including soft gels, enhanced water, supplements, pain sticks and drops. This variation promises a safe introduction to CBD products that new users can be comfortable with as well as a range that those who are more familiar can explore. “What we want people to see is that they’ve got options. The hope is that people can use CBD to reduce their dependence on the drugs that do harm. You hear of people getting hooked on Xanax and opioids—these people are just looking for relief. And while everybody is different and nothing is guaranteed, some people are seeing great results using CBD without the unwanted side effects,” McKellar says. While promoting health benefits and fostering education and understanding around CBD is very important for Erwin and McKellar, they also aim to be a leading brand in the CBD market that consumers could trust. “We like to think of ourselves as the Nike of the CBD market,” notes McKellar. “We are a top-tier brand that provides a top-quality product. We work hard to make sure that every part of our user experience is excellent, from our packaging to our website, and of course the taste.” In order to build trust in their brand, NanoCraft CBD makes science-based information readily available to consumers via data-based blogs and research on their website. NanoCraft CBD also 162 LOCALE MAGAZINE

heads the second-largest CBD education group on Facebook. Additionally, the company has dedicated itself to philanthropy, contributing $1 from each product sold to charitable organizations, such as the Mauli Ola Foundation and Child Hunger Sucks, through NanoCraft Kids. “We wanted to make sure that we could put something back into the community with what we were doing. The two organizations that we work with are really focused on helping out kids and that’s really important,” McKellar explains. “We’ve already been able to give about $10,000 [through our charitable organization] so far this year. We’re hoping to reach our big goal of being able to donate $100,000 by the end of the year. We’re on track to reach that and I really think we can.” While the popularity of CBD continued to grow rapidly over the last several years, the use of CBD health products by athletes and other individuals is still under question. NanoCraft CBD is doing their part to bring awareness and promote the benefits that CBD promises. Fortunately, the athletics industry is making strides by connecting NanoCraft CBD sponsorship agreements with athletes in a variety of sports including surfing, tennis and golf. “There were times when we were literally bootstrapped, trying to make this happen. We had to keep pushing through all of that. And we couldn’t do it without the team we have here,” says McKellar. “We’ve been able to surround ourselves with people who have our same vision. And we’re so lucky for that—none of this would be possible without them.”

A Work of Architecture THESE FIVE MODERNISM WEEK PREVIEW EVENTS HAVE US MAD FOR MOD

WRITTEN BY: LYNNE EODICE

Crazy about midcentury modern architecture? Can’t wait until the main event in February? Then plan on coming to Modernism Week’s Fall Preview, held Oct. 17-20 at various locations throughout the Coachella Valley! The annual 11-day festival will take place in February 2020, but in October, you can preview the main event with walking and double-decker bus tours, visiting fabulous midcentury homes in a variety of neighborhoods and enjoying evening cocktail parties. Over the past several years, the Fall Preview has grown immensely in popularity. This weekend is chock-full of activities, but here are five that you won’t want to miss.

C

BUS AROUND YESTERYEAR • According to Bob Bogard, spokesperson of Modernism Week, the Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tour is “Modernism Week’s signature tour.” You’ll ride by major commercial and civic buildings and some awesome residential desert properties during this 2 ½-hour, open-air bus tour. “Tour highlights include William Krisel’s House of Tomorrow, Donald Wexler and Richard Harrison’s Steel Development Houses and E. Stewart Williams’ legendary ‘Twin Palms’ estate—the former residence of Frank Sinatra,” Bogard explains.

A CORNER OF TIME • This year’s Cul-de-Sac Experience theme is Cul-de-Sac A-Go-Go! “From the moment you enter this secluded circle in the iconic Canyon View Estates, you’re transported to 1966,” Bogard says. “William Kriseldesigned homes are on tour, curated collections of classic vehicles are in the carports and driveways, and there are go-go platforms for our very own Cul-de-Sac Dancers to shake things up.” A new feature of the Cul-de-Sac Experience is a guided tour of the redesigned, drought-tolerant garden and pool areas. FLY ME TO THE HOME • “[Frank Sinatra’s “Twin Palms” Estate Tour] is always one of the most popular events of Modernism Week’s Fall Preview,” Bogard points out. Designed by modernist architect E. Stewart Williams in 1947, the former home of Frank Sinatra is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation (PSPF) will be onsite to answer questions on this self-guided tour. So, make a plan to see this home that’s been described as “great midcentury design combined with Hollywood lore.”

KAPTUR THE MOMENT • On Friday, Oct. 18, PSPF will present “Recognizing Modernist Architect Hugh Kaptur” at Kaptur Plaza. On Saturday, Oct. 19, you’ll have the chance to tour a newly refurbished Kaptur structure, Palm Springs Fire Station #4 in south Palm Springs. You can also tour the John and Bessie Macy residence, a post and beam home designed by Kaptur. “On Sunday morning, Kaptur will be the focus of a talk called ‘The Architecture of Hugh Michael Kaptur’ at the Palm Springs Cultural Center,” adds Bogard. VINTAGE VENDORS • “You’ll have the opportunity to purchase vintage 20th century modern furniture, artwork, sculptures, glass, silver, ceramics, rugs, posters, lighting, fashion, accessories and more from more than 40 exhibitors at the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale,” says Bogard. The show is open to the public on Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 20, with an early buying preview party on Friday, Oct. 18. You should be able to find all things midcentury modern at this event!

It’s Not Market Science COACHELLA VALLEY’S BIGGEST ADVERTISING AGENCY IS A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH

WRITTEN BY: DR. PAULA TRIMBLE-FAMILETTI | PHOTOGRAPHED BY: RUDI WEISLEIN Sitting behind her desk loaded with files, Kyle Radke spreads her hands wide and says, “This is a working office. I am not an executive watching what others do. I like being involved in every stage. These people don’t come here to be creative; they are creative. This is all I have ever wanted to do. I have loved the business of advertising since I was 10.”

S

Jones Agency has grown up with the Coachella Valley and is celebrating their 60th year as the leading, original and uninterrupted marketing firm in the Inland Empire.

Bosswoman • “The best, worst or funniest compliment I have ever gotten was from my dad. He said, ‘You have accomplished so much in your career; just think what you could do if you were a man.’”

When you enter the office, the first thing you notice is that every surface—except for the conference table and desks—is covered with awards. Hundreds of them. And that’s not counting the awards that have been retired to storage. Jones Agency is the most awardwinning agency in the Coachella Valley. At this year’s American Advertising Federation competition, Jones Agency had 15 entries for consideration. They won 17 awards in those 15 entries, as one of their videos moved into higher and higher categories. Radke points out that seasoned professionals (not old people) at Jones Agency are great for their clients. Their tagline, “Experience the Difference,” is the cornerstone of who they are. This full-service

agency offers strategic planning, creative media production, digital public relations, marketing, social media and more. Jones Agency has grown up with the Coachella Valley and is celebrating their 60th year as the leading, original and uninterrupted marketing firm in the Inland Empire. They have grown with the marketplace, along with every business that has set roots in the Coachella Valley. They know where companies are going in the future because they have been there in the past. Committed to their partnership with clients, Jones Agency will only take one client per category at any given time. “How can you trust someone who is marketing the competition?” Radke inquires. The agency decides on the best client in a category—whether it’s a casino, realtor, candy company or consignment store. If the client is not successful, the agency is not successful. “If we do it well, it is a win-win for both of us,” explains Radke. Everything is about the emotions of the consumer. What is right for them? What products or services are right for them? How will a message that is created resonate with them? Radke says the merits of a successful campaign are creative storytelling based on truth and performance. “We work with our clients as partners, getting deep into their business through trust, collaboration and open dialogue,” says Radke. “I like to think of this agency as high-tech delivered through high-touch.”

Creative Path • Radke says, “In college, I majored in art and minored in dance. My dad said to me, ‘Dear God, please take a typing class.’”
