IT’S A COOK-OFF!
®
EDITOR'S NOTE Fitness and I have a long-standing love/hate relationship. I’ve tried it all: CrossFit, spin, yoga, HIIT—I would go on, but do you really have time for that? In a nutshell, I have never really found my “thing” when it comes to being active. I go through phases, as we all do in every facet of our lives— hello, Juicy Couture tracksuits—but nothing has really stuck. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It means I like innovation. I love a challenge and the newest thing that will tone my glutes and keep my attention at the same time. And that kind of mentality has made its way into other parts of my life as well, be it in my career, relationships, style, etc. This issue is all about breaking free from monotony and shooting for the stars with your fitness, work, fashion or travel goals. And a hashtag is not included, because each of us is our own dang role model. We want you to get off your seat and move, think, get inspired and make a difference, so to kick things off, we’re chatting with our Alive Experts (p. 39)—aka some kick-ass women making waves in their industries—to find out why
that glass ceiling is nothing but a flimsy piece of tissue. Our cover star, actress Martha Higareda, is pretty killer in her field as well, proving brawn, brains and beauty is the ultimate triple threat (p. 80). We also want to keep your workout goals in check, showing you some targeted moves for each of the major muscle groups in our Get Fit Guide (p. 49). Strong is the new sexy! And if you needed more to get you pumped about this issue, we have chefs battling it out over what they think is the best way to use a tomato in the summertime in our Foodie Experts (p. 69). Plus, drool over a deconstructed take on a seriously gorgeous tuna dish in Santa Monica (p. 74). What about a day’s worth of adventures on the Amalfi Coast-like Catalina Island (p. 115)? Do we have your attention yet? So what makes my endorphin levels shoot through the roof? Doing whatever the hell I want, be it running on the beach, hopping in a boxing class, reading a book or just taking a bath and resting my weary bones. The point is to “Just do it”–for yourself!

Interviewing an accomplished actress like Martha Higareda was anything but just an interview. It was as if we had known each other for years and were catching up on each other’s lives. Higareda was as interested to learn about me as I was to learn about her, asking where I lived and grew up. That’s how incredibly humble she is. Who knew movie stars could be so casual? It was surprising, to say the least.
I
During the photoshoot, I found myself becoming less nervous as Higareda joked with the team, allowing us to snap photos as she posed for the mighty camera. Then I remembered, she’s one of Mexico’s top actresses and has starred in some of my favorite films—and here I am about to interview her! Photographer Jared Schlachet noted, “We had a great time photographing Martha! She was effortless in front of the camera. Everything about the shoot came together amazingly. Martha is beautiful
and brought her amazing energy to set and there is nothing more you can ask for! We also had an amazing team that all shared in the vision and helped this shoot come to life.” Wardrobe stylist Teresita Marie pulled together the stunning looks for the shoot, while beauty stylist Brian Bond enhanced Higareda’s already gorgeous features. She chose the best place to take a seat inside the lobby of the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel—a comfy couch. As the rays of light illuminated the beautiful lobby, Higareda’s warm brown eyes widened as we practiced our Spanglish, laughing at her childhood memories. As our interview concluded and we selfied away in the lobby, Higareda didn’t just speak of her trajectory in the film industry, but rather told a story filled with determination of turning dreams into reality. She wasn’t just an incredibly talented actress, but a caring human being who was making her way in the world as a strong, vegan Latina.

Bring the Action ACTION BRONSON SHARES HIS LOS ANGELES MUST-EATS
EXPERT: ACTION BRONSON CREDENTIALS: Rapper, Author, TV Show Host and Star of “Fuck, That’s Delicious” on Viceland
WRITTEN BY: CHARLOTTE FARRELL
When Action Bronson touches down in LA, he wastes no time soaking up the rays and living up to his foodie-reputation. “I spend a lot of time on the Westside. I like the beach...when I come out here I just relax and barbecue and just enjoy everything that California has to give,” he said. He went on to break down his top hits. “In Santa Monica, there's this place called Bay Cities. It’s like the Italian deli equivalent of something that would be in New York...they have all kinds of beautiful things,” he said hungrily as he listed them off one by one—great olive oil and bread included. You can take the man out of New York, but, he explains, “I’m always looking for something [that’s] a part of home, like Wexler’s [Deli].” In the opinion of the expert, the bagels are on par with those of the Big Apple. He gets a shmear of cream cheese, tops it off with a little Golden Osetra Caviar and voila! Bronson bagel perfection.
In his eyes, the city isn’t really defined by one particular type of cuisine. “LA is really spread out, you know? But there are a lot of amazing neighborhoods here that are very close-knit. You have that a lot in Queens.” From coast to coast, Bronson makes the most of his surroundings and explores every city’s culture the best way possible: through his stomach.

And for the times he wants something other than that NY-style grub? “I would just go to Phillipe’s and get a French dip...that’s really it. That’s what you need to do.” But sometimes, he craves something with a bit of a kick. “I think Cha Cha Chicken is fire too,” he said, asking me if I had been myself. “It’s right on the beach...it’s like this Cuban, Jamaican, different kinds of Carribeanstyle fire.” To Bronson, it’s places like these that define SoCal cuisine. “Little chill spots...family spots.”

“Use the power of being a woman to actually drive the ideas behind your company. There’s been a huge shift toward women-owned and women-led businesses. I think businesses can come out of the feminine experience and what it’s like being a woman and needs we have uniquely. Listening to your female intuition and not shying away from that allows you to be a successful woman in business today.” —Sabena Suri “No matter what, as much as we heard ‘No’ from anyone, we were still all so truly grounded in the idea. LAZY DAISY Ò We get it. Sometimes you can’t squeeze in a workout. Here are some sneaky ways to work your abs on those days you are stretched for time: 1. When sitting at your desk, contract your ab muscles, pulling your belly button towards your spine. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 10 times. 2. Another great ab trick to try at the office is to lift your feet off the ground, holding for 10-15 seconds at a time, 10 times. You can start off lifting one foot at a time if needed.

HARD CORE 1
“From plank, simply move down to the elbows. Keep the same long line of alignment from your heels out through the crown of your head. If you’re feeling spicy, slowly lift opposite arm and leg. Hold this for three cycles of breath. If that’s too nuts, simply dip your heels and hips to each side, slowly.”

"PARIPURNA NAVASANA" BOAT POSE
“Firm your sit bones to the ground. Grab behind your knees and radiate your sternum to the sky. Keep your shoulder blades squeezing together and play with lifting a foot off the floor to the height of your knee. Then try both feet. Now let go with the hands and start to lengthen your legs.”

CRYOZONE Ò A great way to repair muscles by promoting natural healing is a cryotherapy session at Cryozone Santa Monica. "LOLASANA" PENDANT POSE
“Kneel on both knees and sit upright on your shins with your hands framing your legs on the ground. Push down so hard that your butt lifts up off your heels. Then try lifting one foot off the ground at a time. Eventually, build your way up to lifting both feet off the ground at the same time. You can use free weights, books or yoga blocks underneath the hands to access lifting the legs off the ground more easily.”
5
EXTENDED TABLE TOP
“Start on your hands and knees in tabletop position. Then extend your arm out in front of you, as if you are shaking somebody’s hand and lift the opposite leg. Hold the lift for a minimum of five cycles of breath. As you lower the arm and leg, be mindful of your abdominal movement and attempt to place the hand and knee on the ground at the same time. Repeat on the other side.”

BUNS OF STEAL 1
USE YOUR LEG
“The same way we lift weights to tone our biceps or other body parts to effectively get every corner of the ‘seat,’ as we call it in Pure Barre, is to let the leg be the weight. You want to effectively use the butt to lift the leg up and down like a weight.”
2
SMALL MOVEMENTS
“Go small when using just the glutes, rather than giving the body the option to have stronger muscles take over.”
3
TUCK YOUR HIPS
“Use opposing forces to get the most out of your glute workout. By tucking your hips under, sliding your leg back and then lifting, you get the most out of the work that is being done. You want to isolate the glutes.”
Photographed By: David A. Hernandez | Hair & Makeup By: Heather Balaam | Model: Madison Ashley of Brand Model & Talent, www.brandtalent.net
4
HEAVY TAILBONE
“By keeping your tailbone heavy you are protecting your back and making sure most of the work goes into the butt instead of the back, which is a common mistake when doing anything related to the seat section.”
5
SUPPORTING LEG
“Most times in seat section, the supporting leg works as much as the working leg. It’s a dual exercise so you are getting work on both sides even though it feels like all the movements are coming from one leg at a time.”
6
KEEP IT IN YOUR CORE
“Core is key for proper alignment and ensures that you are focusing on all the right points of contact. It starts at the core to hold the body in the correct spot so you can just focus on making the movements come from the seat.”
7
STRETCH IT OUT
“Stretching is just as important as all that work. In order to see best results, you need to stretch the glutes after you work them. This will lengthen the muscle and give you the best results. Everyone likes to skip out on stretching but it is so important!”
NATIVE KNOWLEDGE Ò Pure Barre is offering a free week to new clients and if you take three or more classes, you’ll get $20 off your $99 intro month at all four locations.

SHOULDER BLADE RETRACTIONS
“Starting on all fours, shoulders stacked over wrists and hips stacked over knees. Keep core engaged. Without bending the elbows, squeeze your shoulder blades together. Then create the action of pressing the floor away and pull your shoulder blades apart, like you are puffing up your upper back. Then repeat by retracting shoulder blades (squeezing together) then pressing away. To make this exercise harder, come into a plank pose with knees off the ground.”
AquaVie Fitness + Wellness Club: Photographed By: Nick Isabella | Styled By: Janelle Arreola | Hair & Makeup By: Lisa Leedy | Model: Loree Rapp of Brand Model & Talent, www.brandtalent.net
2
PUSH-UPS
“This one is really basic but it’s one of the best. Work on form. Don’t worry about going all the way to the floor, instead focus on [keeping the] core engaged and squeezing your shoulder blades together as you bend your elbows. See how many you can do with perfect form instead of how many total reps you can do. [This] can always be done on the knees to make it easier.”
3
EXERCISE BAND CURLS & EXTERNAL ROTATION
“Using an exercise band, place the center of one foot (for easier) or two feet (for harder) on the middle of the band with the handles in each hand. Stand tall, shoulders pulled back. Imagine as if you have a book on your head. Curl the band half way up, pause, then externally rotate arms by pressing thumbs away. Keep elbows close to the body. Bring arms back in and lower back down.”
4
ROW INTO TRICEP EXTENSION
“Using a bench (or two chairs if at home) place the same knee and hand on the bench. Kickstand the other leg so that hips are level. Using a dumbbell, draw elbow in towards ribs, pause there and extend arm straight for the tricep extension, bend back in and return to starting position.”
5
COMBINE ARMS IN FULL-BODY MOVEMENTS
“To get extra arms work, hold weights in hands and do shoulder presses while lunging. Or in between sets of lower body or abs do a small set of push-ups. Yoga is also another way to tone arms. Find different ways to incorporate them into your workouts. One of my favorites is a squat with a bicep curl into a shoulder press.”
DO WORK Ò When it comes to home workouts, Elyssa likes the TRX. “My favorite piece of equipment is the TRX Trainer. It can be pricey, but it’s worth the investment. You can do a whole body workout and take it with you when you travel.”

A Handmade Tale SLOANE ANGELL WANTS THE ARTS TO INSPIRE, ONE PIECE OF POTTERY AT A TIME

His hands are his most used tools, but water, earth and fire are each needed in balance for a finished piece.
Over the past century, Culver City has been home to artisans and dreamers. Midmorning, on any given day, you’ll find ceramicist Sloane Angell tucked into a workspace on a friend’s property, wielding clay. He’s not a slow riser; in fact, he’s been up for hours managing his seasonally permanent clothing line, Mercer Market. A wayfarer’s life by design, Angell’s schedule consists of traversing across a variety of passions. “Having a few different tasks is better suited for me. I’m not good at being bored. It’s nice when I reach a threshold of work in one direction, I can bookmark it, go on to something else and kind of keep the excitement up,” he said. Angell’s days most often end with a peaceful walk on LA’s many paths or preparing dinner while waiting for his wife, Ruby, to return home.
O
60 LOCALE MAGAZINE
Angell encountered clay early, but it was decades before it became a part of his life’s work. His hands first made contact with the medium during high school. Unconvinced that art could sustain him, Angell attended the prestigious Tulane University to study business, minoring in fine arts as a nod to his craft. While missing home, he retreated to a pottery course where he and clay were reunited, but perhaps more as a space to house his homesickness. After a few successful years in business, Angell switched directions and studied menswear at Parsons School of Art and Design. Conceptually, Mercer Market was in the works. Once or twice a month, as a form of meditation—more like a tangible expression of his creativity—Angell headed to a shared studio in Hell’s Kitchen near his apartment to work with clay. Always evolving, Angell later partnered up with an Australian friend and began an import company of curated Australian clothing and home goods. Through this kinship, he met his now Aussie wife, who understandably couldn’t commit to New York winters. Cue Los Angeles. After settling in LA, and when Mercer Market’s operations were under control, Angell found he had a bit of free time left in the day to do with as he pleased, which ultimately led him back to ceramics. From contentious teachers to less-than-ideal studio experiences, Angell had plenty of reasons to have forgotten clay; instead, the momentum kept building until he eventually realized it could not only be a hobby, but also a thriving livelihood. After briefly studying under Los Angeles potter Mirena Kim, and
an esteemed apprenticeship with Japanese potter Akio Nukaga, he claimed his own style and Sloane Angell Studio was born.
Big Moves What Angell lovingly refers to as his ‘gorilla clay studio,’ is likely to expand soon. Look out for his upcoming projects yet to be unveiled!
Inspiration Fuel Angell loves Blue Bottle Coffee to give him energy for long days in the studio. He is also a huge fan of Leo’s Tacos Truck— their tacos El Pastor is his favorite.
Over time, his pieces evolved into more sculptural works with function being an afterthought.
Originally, Angell worked from a place of functionality, wanting to create stoneware, which was needed but also infused with beauty. Over time, his pieces evolved into more sculptural works with function being an afterthought. Each piece is one of a kind, as he prefers them that way. Much of his work is commissioned by interior designers to create unique pieces, which are one-offs for the client. This way, they are able to be involved in the process, as he keeps their vision in mind while the piece comes to life. In fact, though he’s certainly done mass production projects, such as creating the tableware for Gjelina’s new Japanese-concept restaurant MTN, he finds that during this replication he’ll need to “make something without thought,” as he describes, to keep his creative thirst satiated. Angell approaches his pottery as he would a fashion garment. Beginning with mood boards and sketches, considering color, or lack of, and shape. When satisfied with his preparation, he makes a few prototypes to find the silhouette he desires and the process to achieve it. The process from concept to bone-dry is a lengthy one. “A ceramic piece has a truly long life,” Angell explained. His hands are his most used tools, but water, earth and fire are each needed in balance for a finished piece. When asked about a project he hasn’t done but thought about, Angell becomes quiet. “It’s kind of an odd project because it would bring a lot of sadness, but I want to make an urn. I like knowing that unless my ceramics are broken they’ll long outlive me…creating the home for someone’s remains is kind of putting your faith in the artist to make something that will last an eternity, or at least in their mind,” he said. “It’s not something I’m looking for, but it’s one thing I’ve thought about as the ultimate nod of respect if someone asked me to do that.”

There’s nothing more nostalgic than eating a fresh, vine-ripened tomato. The experience may be reminiscent of afternoons in a vegetable garden, a simple reward after a day’s hard work or, perhaps, memories of home-cooked meals. Tomatoes make their star appearance at farmers markets in the early summer, promising a season of healthy, colorful cuisine. To celebrate the beginning of tomato season, two talented LA chefs— Adam Cherney of A.O.C. and Nathan Peitso of FARMHOUSE—demonstrate how they incorporate this classic ingredient into their meals. With refined creativity and presentation to impress, they prove the tomato—when used thoughtfully—is anything but common.

You’re Bacon Me Crazy THE ULTIMATE PALATE PLEASER LIES IN THIS DROOL-WORTHY DUO WRITTEN BY: SHEILA ESTANIEL PHOTOGRAPHED BY: VICTORIA WALL HARRIS
The culinary world has seen an explosion of bacon-centric appetizers, main courses and even desserts—bacon-flavored milkshakes, anyone?—featuring the tasty cured meat as an ingredient. In fact, Americans have been borderline obsessive about adding it to literally almost everything. Never forget that bacon-flavored diet soda was a real thing at some point in human existence, and let’s not even talk about how many bacon-infused air fresheners or lip balms hit the market. This is why we are equally obsessed with this Thick Cut Nueske Bacon Benedict.
Gift Some Grub • Forgot to get your bestie a birthday present? You can order a gift card for as low as $20 and as high as $1,000 so your foodie-friend can fill up on the good stuff.
So what makes bacon our bae in the foodie culture? The human tongue can taste five flavors: bitter, sweet, sour, salty and a super flavor that causes an addictive neurochemical response called umami—aka savory. Bacon has six types of umami, so you can imagine why taste buds happy dance like they’re Beyoncé shooting a music video when the umami compounds enhance each other with each bite. As good as it is, they actually taste even better when paired with beer. Yes, the surprising combination is a Tinder match
made in heaven, because bacon is inherently salty, and the bitterness in beer tames some of the salt and fat content, providing a refreshing balance. This is why festivals and all kinds of food pairing events—big and small—dedicated to bacon and beer have popped up all over the country with attendees flocking in droves. Curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to test this concept out one Sunday Fun Day at Manhattan Beach staple, Rock’N Fish. Ordering the Thick Cut Nueske Bacon Benedict on a toasted English muffin and poached free range eggs from the brunch menu, I looked over at the water from the open air patio where I sat and decided a bottle of Corona Extra would help us with our little culinary adventure. The pilsner-style lager with its crisp and well-balanced hops and malt proved to be an excellent choice because it cut through the thick bacon’s fatty richness and tempered the decadence of the creole hollandaise sauce. It also brought out the sweetness of the luxurious bacon. Our plates were done in no time. Everything tastes better with bacon, and bacon tastes better with beer. Cheers!

Vine is the perfect location. Now add the talents of
Executive Chef Zach Dallesandro and his delectable Blackened Tuna with festive seasonal vegetables, and you have the recipe for a locale that is
appetizingly priceless. “In Santa Monica, our guests love great seafood and fresh produce—this dish is
a perfect combination of both, not to mention the colors really jump off the plate,” said Dallesandro.
The Blackened Tuna dish is made from fresh Ahi tuna, a unique blackening spice blend, basil purée, garlic and onions atop a bed of fresh corn, zucchini, edamame, baby Patty Pan squash, tomatoes, pancetta, a drizzle of olive oil, and a dash of salt and pepper. When creating the signature dish, Dallesandro had to consider the local tastes and palates in addition to the many European and international travelers who frequent the hotel. A balancing act, indeed, but Dallesandro has the experience and talent to fuse the exact amount of piquant boldness without overpowering the dish, making it palatable for any spice tolerance and ideal for introducing visitors to flavorful California cuisine. “For this entrée, the fresh vegetables take the place of a traditional starch which makes this a great option for our guests looking for a gluten-free option,” Dallesandro added. Ocean & Vine’s relaxed elegance is the perfect canvas for Dallesandro’s culinary vision. A circular dining room with muted shades of blue and gray, heated by a central fireplace to keep the ocean chill at bay, sets the stage for stunning sea views. With dual degrees in culinary and baking arts, the young Dallesandro made restaurant waves soon after graduation. With a keen eye to the realm
of hotels and hospitality, he served as a culinary trainer with Marriott, followed by a stint at Hilton before joining forces with Loews Hotels. First in Miami, then Washington DC where he was Director of Food and Beverage as well as Executive Chef, and worked alongside Iron Chef José Garces. Since touching down at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel, Dallessandro has transformed what was once, as he explained, “a little too stuffy and not approachable” French hotel restaurant into the more laid-back waterfront café it is today. A passionate supporter of sustainability and locallysourced ingredients, Chef Dallesandro was inspired by California’s casual beach lifestyle and multicultural landscape and flavors. Impressed with how much Angelenos care about their food and what goes into it, he insists on the highest standards of food integrity. All ingredients are selected fresh daily, are sourced from the highest quality providers and can be traced each step of the way—from purchase to the butcher to the plate. Ocean & Vine is no ordinary hotel restaurant, but an oceanfront bistro where both locals and visitors gather to savor the global cuisine that has become synonymous with Los Angeles.

Known as the world’s cinematic capital, Hollywood can be a challenging city filled with the struggles of “making it” for actors from all backgrounds attempting to leave their footprint on the bumpy road to the silver screen. But one of Mexico’s leading ladies, Martha Higareda, is taking the small screen by storm as she has found huge success starring in the Netflix original sci-fi series “Altered Carbon.” Living in Los Angeles and quickly rising to her full potential in Tinsel Town, Higareda's immense talent, can-do attitude and gifted visualization skills are behind her prolific career as an actress. When Martha Higareda was a 9-year-old girl watching a TV show in her home in the southeast state of Tabasco in Mexico, she realized her life’s calling—acting. She immediately told her sister of her plans. “It was in that moment that I was able to see myself as an actress,” said Higareda.
her teens, she realized her dream of becoming an actress was closer than ever. She waved goodbye to her potential career in communications as she journeyed into the world in front of the camera. "For me, there was always a plan A. I always felt something inside me telling me it was all going to work out. I have no idea what I would have done had it not worked out," she wondered.
With a smile that can light up even the darkest room, her petite stature in no way represents her presence. It is impossible for her to go unnoticed, and it’s clear why she has a successful career, as she has produced, written and starred in some of Mexico’s top box-office hits.
Higareda has shined on the big screen in highcaliber performances that have resonated with loyal fans throughout her beloved Mexico in films such as Amar te Duele, Te Presento a Laura and her recent film, No Manches Frida. But for this superstar, an international career was never far behind as she’s worked alongside prominent actors like Keanu Reeves in the film Street Kings and Kevin Costner in McFarland, USA.

Raised in a traditional Mexican home, her family created a welcoming haven full of creativity and imagination, allowing her inner artist to emerge from a young age. Her mother, Martha, who would later become an actress, often entertained the family with puppet shows on a small stage in their home, and her father Jose Luis, a therapist and writer, influenced her love for the craft. Family is everything to Higareda. It is what fuels her strength, drive and passion. "I want them to have a really good life,” she said, picturing the faces of her three siblings and parents. Filled with dedication, Higareda began taking acting classes during the evenings while attending college in Mexico City. After landing her first role in
Shortly after deciding to move to Los Angeles and landing her first American TV series role, she was faced with devastation as the show was canceled due to the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike. Considering her apartment was paid in full for a year, she remained positive and took screenwriting classes. She would later return to Mexico with three exceptional movie scripts. Higareda has always loved and appreciated the LA culture, ever since her first visit at the age of 14. Permanently moving to the city would be another dream come true for her. “I’ve always been a person

[who] loves anything that’s different and embraces it, and I’m fascinated by people. I came to this city and found all this diversity and found just so many things that LA has to offer. I love how different it is when you go Downtown or go to Venice Beach. It’s a fun city,” she explained. When Higareda isn’t eating her favorite food—that being Mexican, staying true to her roots—she turns to sushi. “I definitely like eating sushi. I think [that] in the whole country, this is the best place to eat sushi,” she added. However, after visiting the Amazon Rainforest, Southeast Asia and animal slaughterhouses, Higareda was exposed to a shocking reality that would ultimately lead her to change her perspective on food consumption and planet conservation. “Really, I eat very little sushi because I’m vegan. I think it’s the only way that we can help the planet,” said Higareda. At the age of 13, Higareda’s parents gave her a book by renowned motivational author Wayne Dyer that forever changed her view on life, and she has since become skilled in the art of visualization. “I had a board with my dreams [on it] and I had a cutout of Keanu Reeves. Then, I came to the US, got an agent and then did Street Kings. I’ve been doing it since I was little, but now I do it even more,” she said. She would later encounter the same fortune during her audition for “Altered Carbon,” as she was shocked to see the book by the same title on her yearly list of books to read.
As an admirer of the sci-fi genre, the Mexican-born actress jumped at the opportunity to portray the tough, street-smart detective Kristin Ortega in the series. “The key is to make it personal,” mused Higareda on relating to her character’s vulnerability and strong persona. Although excited about the role, the part left her feeling immensely responsible, as she wanted to create an honest character that accurately represented Latino culture. Higareda’s career in Hollywood is one to keep an eye on, as her projects continue to focus on unique characters. “Something that I like to look for [in] roles are finding characters who aren’t perfect. That they have a conflict they must overcome in the film and that they are incredibly bold and brave,” said Higareda. Currently, she is developing a cross-over movie with Sony, writing a TV show and starring in “Queen of the South.” Higareda strongly believes anything is possible and gives this advice to those looking to follow their dreams: “I know maybe somewhere there’s someone [who] dreams [of becoming] an actress, musician or whatever,” she imagined. “I really do believe that if you put your heart into it and visualize it as if it was happening today, you can do it. Even if your family or friends say you’re not going to make it, if you really believe that you’re going to make it or do it somehow, I think it can happen.”

At some point in every woman’s life, she’s stood in the mirror and wondered why she didn’t look a certain way. Be it skin issues or not reaching the unachievable standards set for women, it’s almost impossible not to fall victim to this mindset. Whitney Tingle and Danielle DuBoise, founders of Sakara Life, were no different. “[Sakara Life] didn’t start out as a business, it really started as a solution to our own needs,” Danielle explained.

• Sakara is sanskrit for “with form.”
As childhood friends, Danielle moved to New York to study medicine, and Whitney made the move after she finished college to work on Wall Street. “Whitney and I hit rock bottom right around the same time,” Danielle said. Having struggled with severe, cystic acne since she was young, Whitney tried everything from lasers and antibiotics to cutting out foods with no relief. She was hopeful that New York, a city filled with top doctors and dermatologists would provide her with what she needed to rid her of the painful acne, only to find the same answers she was given before. “She just felt like no one was helping her get to the root cause and that was really her lowest low,” Danielle said. Around that same time, Danielle, who struggled with her body image, hit her low as well. “I remember being 9 years old and trying to hide diet pills in the cart at Costco when I was shopping with my mom,” she explained. “I had been informed by those around me and 90 LOCALE MAGAZINE

culture and magazines that I didn’t look like I should in a way that manifested over the years to come and I [started to rely] on diets. It was never really about my nutrition or my health; it was really about my waistline.” Before she was about to graduate, Danielle decided to participate in a 21-daylong retreat in Arizona that included a one-week water fast, followed by eating only raw foods for the duration. Once she returned, she was diagnosed with gut issues, pneumonia and a low immune system. “That was really my ‘ah-ha’ moment where I just realized that I was so willing to go to these extremes because of this body I thought I had to have or that I didn’t have,” she said. “I had strayed so far from this idea that food is nourishment and food is medicine.” Although she had been studying medicine, she was never required to take a nutrition class, so she switched paths and changed her focus. Doing so gave Danielle the opportunity to learn about the gut and microbiome, the bacteria in your gut that dictates everything about your health from your hormonal balance and energy levels, to how many calories you absorb from your food. “The way to eat for a healthy gut and microbiome is to get as many fresh plants into your diet every single day and to get a variety of color, which means a variety of nutrients,” Danielle explained. After learning about the importance of the microbiome, she and Whitney devised a meal plan for each other based on the science behind it, which helped form Sakara’s nine pillars of nutrition. After just two weeks, they started to see results. “It was the first time in 12 years that [Whitney’s] skin finally started to clear after trying so many things. worrying about what not to eat, when really the solution was I needed to focus on what I should eat.” After seeing tangible results, Whitney and Danielle shared this newfound information with their friends, who obviously wanted to get in on it. Once they had several clients, they took note of the importance of providing a ready-to-eat product, rather than offering just recipes. “We decided to try and make it a business. We had no idea what we were doing. We were really broke. We threw a dinner party and we sold tickets that raised about $700...that’s really how we got started,” Danielle recalled. Once word got out, Sakara Life took off. “If you create a product that really changes lives, it spreads like wildfire,” Danielle said. And spread it did! Organically reaching celebrities like Lily Aldridge, the company grew from the founders cooking in their kitchen in 2012 to now employing 100 people and delivering across the continental US. “We deliver fresh so nothing is frozen. Everything has to look beautiful, it has to taste really good and it has to deliver results,” she said. In fact, within just three to five days, you can expect to see your skin glowing and a reduction in bloating, and within three weeks you’ll experience a biological and sociological change that will last for weeks to come. The best part? There’s no calorie counting and no guilt—all they ask is that you put your trust into Sakara Life and you will see real results that customers across the nation have experienced. “It’s really a personal journey. For me, the empowering part of this journey is [that] food is supposed to make you feel better, not worse,” Danielle said. “We invite you to get to know your body a little bit better and really learn how to listen.”

Barbie World • Before Jeff started working for Aloha for People, he designed the packaging for Barbie. Love at First Festival • Brian met Emily at the music festival Outside Lands and they married not long after.
What do you get when you mix three people from SoCal with varying degrees in construction management, fashion merchandising and graphic design? The answer is a group of humanitarians working together to change the world through their clothing business. We always ask ourselves how many people it takes to make a difference, and, in this case, the answer is three. Or at least it starts with three, and then branches out to the many people involved in creating clothing threaded with a greater purpose.

Ruff Life “It would be fun to make dog bandanas with the excess fabric from our clothing one day,” says Emily.
Native Knowledge • You can find the full list of retailers that carry Aloha for People on their website, but now you can also visit their brick and mortar shop in Redondo Beach!
Aloha for People was founded in 2016 by Brian Poage and Emily Sansom, two lovebirds that connected at a music festival and shared a passion for sustainability and global consciousness. Their third member, Jeff Michaels, first joined the team to temporarily assist with logo creation and marketing, but the more he got involved, the more he wanted to be a part of the project long term. And the result of their combined efforts made it all worth it; when Aloha for People launched on Kickstarter two years ago, they raised about $8,000 in the first 24 hours and the full $25,000 in 30 days. The company started its humanitarian efforts with Guatemala to provide clean drinking water by installing filters in schools that would last for two years. Brian says that the inspiration for Aloha for People came from “having a friend in LA that was from Guatemala [who] told [us] about the water crisis that existed there,” he explained. But it never really hit home until they started to do some research on their own. Emily said that “the more [she] talked to [her] friend about the water situation there, the more [she] learned about their drastic need for help.” They explained that waterborne illness is the leading cause of death for children there and that a huge percentage of the water isn’t drinkable, making it an important issue to address. They also pointed out that Guatemala has a mixture of three different cultures in one area, with a huge textile industry and an affinity for cotton, sparking the idea to take on the water crisis and create clothes at the same time.
Photos - (left) Photos provided by Aloha for People (right) Photos by Tae Kwon
Since starting their work with Guatemala, they have expanded their efforts to include Nepal and Hawaii, as well. They are partnered with different organizations in each country that specialize in sanitary water solutions: Ecofiltro in Guatemala, Wine to Water in Nepal and the Surfrider Foundation in Oahu. These partners are working alongside Aloha for People to make a difference one shirt at a time, as each purchase provides a minimum of two years of clean drinking water for a person in need. But their work goes beyond their dedicated team by helping to create more jobs. Not only in Los Angeles where every shirt is made, but also in the different countries they are working to help. The fabrics they use in Guatemala and Nepal are hand-woven by locals and in Hawaii, they’re designed on-island. The business’ main goal is “trying to help people in places where there is a cycle of poverty,” Brian says. “And the best way to do that is through education and employment.” Jeff credits this combined creative process to “doing stuff [Aloha for People] loves, while people in other countries are doing it for their cultures and histories, which they love,” he added. The Aloha team is passionate and motivated to help people both locally and internationally through fostering a way to participate in authentic and historical work. Jeff said that Aloha for People “actually started out not as a clothing company, but as a design for helping people.” This group of young, inquisitive individuals’ quick, four-month business plan turned into a long-term success story, proving that altruistic businesses can make positive impacts in the world. They opened a store of their own—The Aloha Bungalow—in Redondo Beach this summer to expand their efforts. They also wish to partner with a couple more countries in the next 10 years to have an even bigger global impact. Aloha is a way of life for the company, spreading compassion, love and care to everyone who comes in contact with their brand. And with their products, they help to restore life in areas where basic survival has been threatened. Now that’s one powerful shirt.

I fully believe that healthy habits can create long-lasting change along with the support of a community like Instagram! Recently, my boyfriend and I had the chance to visit the beautiful Catalina Island. I went once in eighth grade and have always wanted to go back. I have fond memories of swimming with Garibaldi fish and relaxing on the sand, but never knew about the other amazing outdoor activities available. It’s the perfect little destination for someone who loves adventure and wants to stay active!

The Aerial Adventure is a whole course that they let you take at your own pace and own difficulty level. Definitely the best full body workout you can get on the island! You also climb and swing your way through eucalyptus trees. How amazing is that? It’s like your own personal jungle gym, except you’re suspended in the air! I would suggest going first thing in the morning when the air is cool.
