NOW SERVING: SKID ROW

Does it sound dramatic if I say food has never let me down? (Okay—maybe once when I got food poisoning on a flight back from New York—but hey, forgive and forget). Serious talk—pasta and steak kept my family and me happy during our weekly “Sunday night dinners,” that chocolate ice cream my best friend bought me got me through a breakup and now, it’s coffee and brunch that bring my friends and I together. Our Foodie issue was made with Los Angeles in mind. No one does eats and drinks like the City of Angels. Are you ready to order? We’ll start with cocktails crafted by some of LA’s finest bartenders—our Drink Experts (pg. 47)—who know how to raise the bar and create Insta-boomerangstory—worthy drinks. From there, we’re hitting up the best pizza, sushi and tacos in town. We have the right places mapped out in our Foodie Guide (pg. 55) including the tried-and-true taco trucks, the hidden gem pizza places to the authentic sushi restaurants. Have food restrictions? We do, too—check out our “Make the Swap” section and show your friends just what you eat when you’re gluten-free or vegan.

It’s obvious we have a great food scene in LA, but let’s not forget about those who live in the city, too. As the second-most populated city in the nation, we have to look out for each other and LaRayia Gaston, founder of Lunch On Me, is doing just that in Skid Row, making her and her nonprofit our Humanitarian Profile (pg. 72). There’s no shortage of powerhouse women in the city. Our cover star, Nicole Ari Parker, has built an empire for herself, to say the least. She talks about what it takes to make it in Hollywood as an actress, a wife and mother in our cover story (pg. 34). The next time you’re about to meet someone for food or drinks, pick up this issue, choose a place and explore the tastiest food LA has to offer. Gave up on your first New Year resolution? Here’s another one for you: get out more. Stay up late to visit that cute speakeasy or wait in line to try the new burger joint that opened up. I’ll be doing the same! Oh, and one last thing—tip your waiters and bartenders.

An unbreakable work ethic can be spotted a mile away. For Nicole Ari Parker, there simply isn’t a light switch that turns her passion for her work on and off—it’s instilled in her personality through and through. Her focus and professionalism came together on the day of the shoot, a perfect counterpart to the deep intensity of the plush, velvet-upholstered furnishings at Poppy.

A

Wardrobe Stylist Sara Borgese selected looks that complemented Parker’s powerful stature and elegant demeanor. “Jewel tones look amazing on her,” said Borgese. “Her skin tone is just so gorgeous on the silvery-metallic pantsuit.” Plunging necklines and plenty of shimmer kept pace with Parker’s dynamic poses. For hair, Stylist Kiyah Wright went in a burgundy-brown direction. “Nicole has these beautiful green eyes,” said Wright. “That always leads me into the direction of color.” The loose, rock-star layers gave Parker a look that matched the uninhibited, curling fauxfoliage hanging from the ceiling above inside the nightclub. “We

were going for a clean, fresh look, inspired by the beach,” said Makeup Stylist Astrid Monzon. Although the ambient lighting inside the nightclub was rather dim, photographers Jared Schlachet and Joe Magnani commented: “It’s always tough to light in a club that’s dark, and then make it look not-so-dark. It’s a delicate balance.” The moody lighting added to the sultry atmosphere, along with hypnotic beats playing in the background. Quite frankly, to say the least, Parker killed it. Later on, during our interview, I saw a side of Parker that was also easygoing and profoundly perceptive. She allowed room for vulnerability, openly sharing stories from both her personal and professional life. Despite the backto-back schedule that a successful actress like Parker has, she took the time to respond thoughtfully, with the crystal-clear clarity that only someone who’s an expert in their field can command. Lucky for me, her natural poise, ability to laugh and steadfast determination is irresistibly infectious.

LETTER TO KATE RAMOS WRITES AN OPEN LETTER TO HER YOUNGER SELF

Hey Girl! This year you’ll turn 23. You don’t know this now, but this past year was one of the most eventful of your life. You graduated from college, got hired as the Sous Chef at Mustard’s Grill, moved to Napa Valley, met the man who would become your husband and started on your journey that led you here, to an older, more refined version of yourself. I know you’re terrified. I know you feel clueless and alone. I would urge you to tell people that. Being vulnerable is way better than the snarky jerk routine you fall back on to hide your fear. It’s okay to not know stuff. When you ask questions what you’re really saying is, “I’m confident and brave.” Ever since you were a little girl you wanted to be a chef—and you did it! Now you’re here and realizing that restaurant kitchens make you miserable. Well, what if I told you that it will one day lead you to create your own food media brand, ¡Hola! Jalapeño, a successful food blog that has allowed you to have the family you’ve always dreamed of and still do what you love. I’ll warn you; it’s not going to be seamless, however. You think these years as a chef are the hardest, but they’re not. Motherhood will challenge you far more than your toughest day in the kitchen ever did. I beg of you to ask for help. That guy you are currently dating will end up being the best thing that ever happened to you. He loves you more than you can possibly understand. Tell him what you need, please.

“In my chef’s coat, I was 23 years old and working as a Sous Chef at Mustard’s Grill in Napa Valley, CA.”

There are three things I want you to know that I wish I had understood when I was your age. First of all, you deserve the moon and stars and everything in between; never tell yourself otherwise. Secondly, nothing ever comes out of playing the victim. You can mourn the loss of what you imagined life would be, but only for a little while, then you must move on. And lastly, life has a way of being inconceivably benevolent when you believe in your inherent gifts. You must trust with every inch of your being that God made you exactly how you are, on purpose. Don’t waste a minute wishing you were someone else.

Now, as a veteran member of the Hollywood elite, Parker has taken on the role of Giselle Barker in “Empire,” launched a nonprofit organization and started her own business, all while balancing home life with her husband and two children. Look up Parker’s name in the dictionary, and you’ll likely find this definition: power woman; determined; unstoppable. As with most good things in life, the journey takes time. After achieving her degree, Parker went to countless auditions. She was relentless and started landing a few small roles in the early years of her career. “It’s a hitting-the-pavement kind of gig,” Parker said. “You have to keep going.” At times, when she was turned down for a role, her parents were there for her through thick and thin. “I could hear my father’s voice telling me, ‘You need to get up,’” Parker said. “When I did three or four callbacks for a job, I could hear my mother’s voice saying, ‘You did the best you could. Feel good about that.’”

No doubt, you’d also see a photo next to Parker’s name in the dictionary. Tall, poised and irresistibly alluring, she holds an aura of confidence that comes from years of experience in the entertainment industry. Naturally perceptive, Parker knows what’s happening in all corners of the room, showcasing a rare sensitivity to how all the wheels in motion work together. It’s no wonder that she’s woven her way through Hollywood, with even more yet to unravel.

N

The journey to fame for Parker started at a young age. At her childhood home in Baltimore, Maryland, she would dress up and entertain her parents’ friends whenever they came to visit. “I would even make a curtain with the rope and draw it back,” Parker said. “When I think back, I was a producer, basically, and a director, as well as an actor!” From there, Parker’s love for storytelling evolved into pursuing her degree at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. “I like bringing people together,” Parker said. “That’s what happens in movie theaters, in Broadway theaters, in school gymnasiums—there are all these people who come together to use their imagination and go on a creative journey.” While performing on stage in school, she was drawn to the way an audience would respond to her through laughter, tears and applause. “It’s almost like being a rock musician who loves touring more than they love the studio,” Parker said. “It’s because of the feeling of the people.”

It’s easy to see that the inner strength Parker radiates today roots back to the perseverance she upheld from the very beginning. After seven years in the industry, Parker landed her big break on the TV series, “Soul Food,” based on the 1997 film, Soul Food, which ran for four seasons, and soon the stars seemed to align. The set of “Soul Food” also happened to be where she met her husband of 13 years, Boris Kodjoe, who serendipitously played Parker’s love interest in the show. Soon, Parker’s breakout role sparked the first flames of the fire she’s known for today. And, the heat is rising. Parker’s character, Giselle Barker, in the hit TV drama “Empire,” came on in the fourth season as Eddie Barker’s (Forest Whitaker) ex-wife. Parker said, “I got a call saying, ‘Do you want to play Forest Whitaker’s ex-wife on “Empire?”’ I said, absolutely. It was a hit show and an Oscar winner in one phone call.” Soon after, the writers decided to make Giselle a recurring character on the show for the fifth season.

What’s in a Name

• Parker’s nickname, “Bones,” was coined by her father when she was a kid due to her slim frame and slender physique.

Guilty Pleasures

• The sweet treat she can’t get enough of? Chocolate with hazelnuts. Her favorite kind is Milka, which Kodjoe’s mother brings straight from Germany when she visits.

Fresh From the Oven

• Parker loves baking! Whether it’s creating a butter pound cake or putting her spin on an Austrian Linzer Torte, Parker loves to whip up delicious goodies with her daughter, Sophie, in their kitchen.

It’s a Tear-Jerker

• Parker has a soft spot for the movie “Annie,” and in particular, the scene where Annie walks into Daddy Warbucks’ mansion and she thinks it’s her job to clean the entire house until she realizes she’s there to stay—it gets Parker every time!

page 39

As the season unfolds, Parker’s character develops on screen. “I came in as the side piece who got lucky, married a mogul, then got divorced, and is in a crisis because his money is going down the drain,” Parker said. “When it was time to write for the fifth season, the writers wanted to find a way to discover the other side of a character like that.”

A

“Empire” has created major buzz since its 2015 debut, changing television as we know it today. The show follows the story of a family’s power struggle as they feud over who will gain control of the hiphop music and entertainment company, Empire Entertainment. Critics have raved over the show, and each season brings in even more viewers globally. “You have an African American cast breaking those barriers and getting those numbers,” said Parker. “That’s very important for this industry to witness.”

skills that you might not have.” For Parker, it’s about finding a partner who knows every day isn’t going to be perfect—there are going to be fights—it happens. The most important thing is to be on the same page about making it work, no matter what. Not only that, but Parker has also found it’s important to have separate interests outside of your relationship, too. “So that when you come home, you’re not making that person the curator of your happiness,” Parker said. “You have to bring some level of your own happiness to the table.” Last but not least: “And you know…you have to remember to make out!” Ask Parker about her entrepreneurial endeavor, the Gymwrap, and a flicker of excitement will appear in her eyes. “I was just trying to solve a problem—I wanted a band that could deal with all of my own personal hairstyles,” she said. “I blow my hair out and I want to keep it for a few days, but I don’t want to miss working out.” Problem solved. Parker made the Gymwrap in her kitchen with her daughter, and the rest is history. The Gymwrap can now be found in four major retailers and online.

When she’s not on the set of “Empire” in Chicago, Parker spends her time at home in Los Angeles with Kodjoe and their two children, Sophie and Nicolas. How does Parker find balance between work and family life? Actually, Parker said, “There really isn’t any balance. Our children are our priority in this world. We want to be present for them as much as possible.” As soon as “Empire” wraps for the week, she’s jet-setting back home to help her kids with math homework and tuck them into bed at night. Being there for them is what makes everything else in life fall into place.

Even better, part of the proceeds from the Gymwrap benefits the Sophie’s Voice Foundation, a nonprofit founded by Parker and Kodjoe with the mission to help individuals and families affected by spina bifida. Their daughter, Sophie, was diagnosed with spina bifida at birth, a medical condition that affects the spine. But if you met Sophie, Parker said, “You would just see a bright, happy, bossy big sister to Nicolas. You wouldn’t know she has a high-maintenance lifestyle. It’s her normal.”

So does an unshakable marriage. Parker and Kodjoe have been together almost 14 years after hitting it off on the set of “Soul Food.” “We just took our time and got to know each other,” said Parker. “We were friends who fell in love.” Parker recalls an anecdote: Long before they began dating, Kodjoe came right in her dressing room and flat-out said, “You know we’re going to be married with two kids someday, right?” Parker laughs, “I looked at this gorgeous man and I said, ‘Sure, yeah, yeah, definitely.’” Who knew they’d be exactly where he predicted only a few years later? Above all, Parker says she believes that marriage is about wanting to make it work through the many ups and downs that life brings. “I’m married to someone who wants to be married,” Parker said. “You have to be ready for that kind of life. Marriage is commitment, sacrifice, time put in and communication

At the end of the day, Parker is driven by her positive outlook and enduring resilience. “I’m not afraid to ask questions about what I still don’t know,” she said. Much is on the horizon in the year to come for Parker, as she’s already started to make strides in the direction of producing, directing and writing. Even if a new endeavor doesn’t go as planned, she believes that there’s knowledge to be gained through the process. “[People] often think they need to wait for someone to give them the green light, or have someone to back them up,” said Parker. Her advice: “Produce something first, no matter how small it is. Even if you fall on your face, you’re just that much smarter, because you tried.”

Are You Cereal? CHRISTINA TOSI BRINGS MILK BAR’S CRAFTY CONCOCTIONS TO LOS ANGELES

CHRISTINA TOSI Founder + CEO of Milk Bar

WRITTEN BY: CHARLOTTE FARRELL PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: MILK BAR Imagine yourself at age five or six, picking up a demolished bowl of cornflakes with your clumsy, pudgy hands. As you slurp the cereal milk, it spills over on each side, splattering all over your cheeks, the table and onto your super cool light-up sneakers. But it doesn’t matter. This is the best part. That infused milk is simply beautiful, sweet perfection.

I

In 2007, Christina Tosi was two years into being a part of the Momofuku family. After plenty of tinkering and testing, her Cereal Milk™ Soft Serve was born, and the rest is history—an iconic, sugary, delicious history. Since then, the Founder and CEO of Milk Bar has set her sights on expansion and development—it’s only natural for the culinary creative genius to dream big. With locations throughout New York, stores have found new homes in Boston, Washington D.C., Las Vegas, Toronto and now our beloved Los Angeles. “LA is one of the most gritty, inspiring, individualistic cities. It’s been incredible to live and work here over the past few years, immersing myself in the culture and dreaming up what Milk Bar LA will be,” said Tosi.

Expect the classics, but staying true to Tosi’s flair for the inventive and independent spirit, the LA spot will feature exclusive menu items inspired by Milk Bar’s NYC origins and its new home in Cali. Standouts include sweet and savory breads like the Pastrami and Rye Bomb, Pepperoni Bomb, Elote Cornbread (also gluten-free) and more. Fill up on the Pineapple Fo’ Sho Whip, a tangy, dairy-free, pineapple-lime soft-serve inspired by Disneyland’s version. Or try Ritzy Business, a buttery cracker cone filled with your choice of soft serve and layered with strawberry sauce, cracker crunch and freeze-dried strawberries. *Starts drooling* Another variation that sets LA apart from NY is the classroom space with windows that open up to an expansive kitchen and R&D lab where guests can watch the team do their magic. And if your timing is right, they’ll serve up never-before-seen, freestyle menu items. Tosi sums it up perfectly: “The result is a Milk Bar like no other, a collection of all our gathered inspiration in one 4,000-square-foot spot. It has all the OG elements and spirit of our New York roots, plus tons of new innovations and surprises that capture the magic of its distinctly West Hollywood neighborhood.”

RISE AND SHINE • Gluten and dairy-free items are on deck, and the menu also features coffee options including Milk Bar’s specialty lattes that combine products like Milk Bar Birthday Cake and Cereal Milk™. THEY SEE ME ROLLIN’ • Exclusive to LA is the first ever Milk Bar Ice Cream Truck. Book it for your next event so guests can enjoy soft serve and other treats.

Local Mixologists Show Off Their Take on Seasonal Ingredients

WRITTEN BY: EMILIE KEFALAS PHOTOGRAPHED BY: CALLIE BIGGERSTAFF, MANASA MADISHETTY AND MATT MISISCO

When it comes to bar basics, we’re creatures of habit and comfort, which often arrives in our glasses via preference and routine. We followed several local bartenders mixing business with pleasure—and bourbon with agave (among other kindred spirits)—in the name of stirring things up across LA's bar scene. The results are stunning and sippable concoctions for all palates. Whatever your cup of tea, or glass of booze, in this case, a mixed drink invites melodious surprises beneath an umbrella of bubbles and orange peel garnishes. It might inspire you to mingle more with your liquor selections.

HAM & YEEZY

THE KINGSLEY

Dine at SOUTHEND and you can basically trick your tongue into believing you’re in Venice—Italy, that is. Enjoy the Kinney with a flavorful basil pesto and crushed Roma tomatoes. Rest assured, you’re in good hands, the chef crisps the pizza to perfection.

Cannoli imagine one more slice, please. Who says NY has the only good pizza in America? Not us. Vito’s Pizza hits a high note that so many others just can’t reach. Skip the red sauce and go for The Sophia Loren with caramelized onions, goat cheese, arugula and pine nuts. Yum!

All hail peppers, especially when it’s on a pizza. Jon & Vinny’s take on Italian cuisine becomes its own language, mixing traditional favorites with trendy West Coast influences. For when you want to go classic, the Ham & Yeezy should be your goto with smoked mozzarella and fresh red onion.

Yes, Koreatown and pizza can be said in the same sentence. As a matter of fact, it’s no surprise that Bulgogi beef plus mozzarella cheese makes for the most satisfying combination, ever. But don’t just take our word for it, go try it for yourself.

After biting into a life-changing Belgian waffle in Europe, 26-year-old Owner Sara Ho made it her mission to spread the light airiness of an authentic dessert waffle with everyone she knows. Opening À La Waffle allowed the Los Alamitos native to test and perfect the sweet authenticity of an often-overlooked dessert. “We don’t put anything on the menu unless it tastes incredible,” Ho said. With over 10 uniquely-created Belgian waffle desserts to choose from, Ho has successfully converted several dessert haters into plate-licking regulars who will never look at a waffle the same way again.

• Every waffle begins with a two-day process to make the batter and ensure it meets the airiness of a true Belgian waffle. Never too sweet, the strawberry shortcake waffle will melt in your mouth as your tongue switches between savoring the creamy buttercream and devouring the tart, fresh strawberries. Pro-tip from the owner: this dessert pairs wonderfully with their Iced Vanilla Milk.

All or Nothing • Gaston says that happiness starts with passion and drive. “Whatever you’re doing, you have to give it your all. And then muster up even more. Find a way to replenish what you tapped out, and then give that, too.” Next Up • The current goal is to create brick and mortar spaces like a yoga studio and a coffee shop as a platform to provide employment and enjoyment for homeless citizens and foster youth. Gaston asks for a simple donation of $10 a month to make the idea a reality.

LaRayia Gaston woke up one morning and decided to feed 500 people. Gaston, the inspirational driving force who would go on to found Lunch On Me—an organization made up of dedicated volunteers who collect leftover food from restaurants around greater Los Angeles and personally deliver it to the homeless citizens of Skid Row—called some friends, chose a Saturday on the calendar and decided to devote the day to feeding the often-ignored crosssection of Downtown LA with nutrient-rich foods.

L

“I said, ‘Let’s pay for it, I’ll buy it,’” she recalls of the vegan pizzas and pressed juices that became the inaugural meal. Through word of mouth alone, 100 volunteers showed up that first day. Overwhelmed with gratitude for the positive response, Gaston decided to forge ahead. “I was able to facilitate people coming down to Skid Row who would never come down to Skid Row. So I said, ‘Okay this is great. Let’s do it again.’” According to the statistics provided by the organization, homelessness in Los Angeles has increased 75 percent in the past six years, and an estimated 51,188 citizens are currently without shelter. By the same token, 30-40 percent of uneaten food goes to waste, on average. Lunch On Me, a fully grassroots endeavor, has created a systematic method to merge the disconnect in both areas by redirecting 74 LOCALE MAGAZINE

waste (of nutritious and organic foods, no less) to struggling members of the community for just 89 cents per meal. Solely dependent on the kindness of volunteers and donations, it is without a doubt one of the purest ways to contribute to the charitable fabric of the LA community. “Lunch on Me was created out of love, and it is 100 percent tangible now,” says Gaston. “It was something I thought about, and I didn’t allow it to stop with my thoughts. I wasn’t meditating on it, I was handing out plates.” Giving back is a fundamental concept that is deeply rooted in Gaston’s spiritual core. To hear her speak, the deep devotion she has for community service goes beyond admirable belief in a cause, it’s practically ordained. “It’s an overwhelming joy,” she says. “It doesn’t feel earthly, it feels beyond that. It’s so liberating as a spirit, it’s a true expression of the internal self. There was a time in my life that I couldn’t even feed myself as a struggling artist, and now I can feed 10,000 people a month.” Lunch On Me aims to reapproach the community as a whole, from the ground up. With her volunteers, Gaston throws monthly block parties, incorporating healthy living in the form of yoga, breathwork, essential oils as well as inviting barbers and manicurists to perform beauty and grooming sessions on the spot.

negative stereotypes around homelessness, and foster kindness and compassion. “They are in tough circumstances, but these are beautiful people who just want to be seen and understood,” she says. “The biggest challenge is getting people out of their own fear to be of service. We’re asking people to be uncomfortable, to do things that they might be resistant to do.” Gaston operates with an active desire to generate change, repair a fractured community and heal shared traumas through wellness, nutrition and self-care. She is steadfastly committed to her convictions and tireless in her motivation. “I showed up,” she says simply. “It’s not a magic trick; there’s no way around it. I did the work. I spent hours on Skid Row talking to people, finding out what the needs are. Begging people to be kind and generous, begging people to love without reason.” It’s that love without reason that Gaston most hopes to spread through her work. For those who ask how they can make a difference, her answer is simple. “Micro gestures,” she explains. “I’ve dedicated my life to it. Don’t make [donating] a seasonal thing, make it part of your everyday life to be kind, to be loving, to be of service.”

And then there’s the issue of alienation from the mainstream community. Gaston hopes to eradicate LOCALE MAGAZINE 75

It’s a cozy space that serves up some of the city’s best coffee as well as healthy breakfast and lunch selections. Their latest addition is a cute boutique in the back of the store. Los Angeles is a mecca of the arts, entertainment and celebrities. People from all over the world want to know what it’s like to live in California and Los Angeles in particular. Downtown LA is a beast of its own with so many different districts, neighborhoods, people and cultures. Every type of business can be found in DTLA which makes it so unique. Located south of Interstate 10 and surrounded by bustling streets lies the creative space of STRAPPED and the owner who is making strides in the clothing industry with his motorcycle culture-inspired line that oozes grit, texture, street and quality craftsmanship.

NO PLACE LIKE LA • “[My] favorite part of being downtown is the sheer amount of life! Every walk of life and community is here.” NOT JUST FOR TUESDAYS • Wiseley’s go-to? Tacos Mexico! "They are the best tacos place in LA, hands down.” Don’t let the exterior fool you!

A man dressed in a distressed white shirt detailed with spray paint and paired with a gray sweater greeted me at the door with a huge smile. Tucked away in an unsuspecting building, Jordan Wiseley, founder and designer of STRAPPED, walked us into the company's creative space. I was immediately engulfed in the glorious aroma of leather. Wiseley felt like an old friend—humble and down to earth. It was only the first week of January and Wiseley’s phone was beeping non-stop, an indication that his business is taking off. This entrepreneur has a packed schedule as he plans on revamping his website, has a movie in the works with his production company, is rebuilding a custom 2001 Ducati 748 bike inspired by a WWII p-51 Mustang plane and, of course, is growing his clothing business and having his first ever pop-up show at Project in New York. "We just want to do all of the things we like to do,” Wiseley said. “You can suffer through a job you don’t like or you can hustle and do the things you do like and make money and keep pushing. We’ve always been on that train."

"WE JUST WANT TO DO ALL OF THE T H I N G S W E L I K E TO D O. YO U C A N SUFFER THROUGH A JOB YOU DON’T LIKE OR YOU CAN HUSTLE AND DO THE THINGS YOU DO LIKE AND MAKE MONEY AND KEEP PUSHING. WE’VE A L W AY S B E E N O N T H A T T R A I N . " —JORDAN WISELEY

Wiseley got his first taste of clothing design back in high school with his old friend, A.J. Cutler, who is now in charge of all the digital media for STRAPPED. "I wanted clothes I couldn’t afford, so I had to make them,” Wiseley said. “If it wasn’t a necessity, our parents wouldn’t go out and buy it for us." Growing up on a small farm in Oklahoma, Wiseley was feeding horses early in the morning and then was off building, fixing and riding bikes, which taught him how to use his hands at an early age. Starting with dirt bikes and "anything with a motor," he was emerged in the motorcycle and biking culture—a life and clothing style that intrigued Wiseley. "Racing, in general, is an expensive hobby and I wanted these cool clothes, so we made them because we didn’t have [anything] like that," Wiseley said. It’s his fascination with the grittiness of the attire, the leather, straps, all of the colors and the jerseys that have inspired this highly-praised clothing company. "Working with my hands and fixing things was always—” his phone beeped again and Wiseley realized that his upcoming show in New

York was only days away and he had shipped most of his designs to display at Project NY, which will put his company in the position to be carried at retailers around the world. When asked what the biggest reward was from his clothing line, he chuckled. “The clothing line has been the biggest test. There is so much technicality in this game. I always ask ‘Why?’ and ‘Why are we doing this so inefficiently?’ There seems to be a disconnect,” Wiseley said. “So [I’m] constantly challenging the industry standard. Humility is probably the number one thing that I’ve learned. It doesn’t matter how clearly you can see something [because] there is a way to do it. We’ve really had to humble ourselves and learn." Wiseley is hands-on with the production of his line, even down to having ownership in his supply chain of leather and denim. His passions and his intent for his brand shows in the quality of craftsmanship of the pieces that were displayed in his workshop. “The hardest part of retail is dealing with your inventory. I wanted to have a really good relationship with my manufacturer and launder." Angelenos, take note—the genuine leather and imported silk that’s worked into their jackets for their leather, reversible and unisex denim jackets, are on trend. Spending a better part of a year in the shop at least three to four days a week with the cutters and pattern makers and learning to handmake items one by one has been beneficial. STRAPPED has had custom pieces on some of today’s hottest stars and artists—landing on celebrities, influencers and stylists like Taylor Swift, Cozz, AJ Mitchell, Keith Powers and Ugo Mozie. Wiseley’s designs, stitching, buckles and logo-stamped buttons are a work of art themselves. It’s no wonder why they’ve been seen in commercials and collaborations for different artists’ tours. STRAPPED is rooted in Downtown LA’s culture. “I love texture and that’s the one main thing I try to convey," he explained. And he does. Whether it’s the graffiti art along the walls, the train tracks that run through the area, urban roads or the mecca of cultures that exist in the city, Wiseley draws inspiration from all of it, creating a feel to his clothing as unique as the city of Los Angeles. ALIVE Most models are used to facing rejection, but where some might see roadblocks, Deddeh Howard saw an opportunity. Born in the African country of Liberia and raised in Cote D’Ivoire, Howard moved to Los Angeles at the age of 19 with a dream of pursuing a modeling career. After being turned away by several agencies claiming they “already have a black model,” she decided to take matters into her own hands. With her photographer boyfriend behind the lens, Howard recreated major ad campaigns featuring white models, recasting herself in each shot and comparing the images side by side, launching what would become The Black Mirror Project. Seeking to raise awareness about the lack of diversity in the modeling and entertainment industry, Howard created an inspiring platform to fight for equal representation for women of color. “The project was created to inspire women like me who don’t feel represented or beautiful,” says Howard. “My goal is to keep inspiring, helping and spreading the word of diversity because I truly believe that we all matter.” Already an Instagram-verified lifestyle blogger and YouTuber, Howard was able to shine a light on her cause through social media— showcasing women of all colors and ethnicities and increasing their visibility while garnering a loyal following. Word of Howard’s mission spread and the project quickly went viral, sending her on a bonafide publicity circuit. While Howard believes there is still work to be done to achieve equal representation, thanks in great part to the popularity of her vision, the industry is beginning to listen.

Model Behavior

“It starts with the brands demanding that diversity [should be] featured in their campaigns,” Howard explains. “What they demand, the market will deliver. It also takes the vision to represent the world we live in today and not just a limited scope.” Howard says she’s grateful for the outpouring of support she’s received from the media and from fans around the world. The “baby steps” she’s witnessed toward greater inclusion is a beacon of progress for women across all industries and professions.

A

Trust Your Gut • For Gregson-Williams, being healthy is about feeling healthy: “A lot of it is about how you feel, and there are a lot of things that connect that.”

ALIVE

The life of a dancer is not a simple one. Sassy GregsonWilliams spent most of her young adult life practicing professional ballet, dedicating at least eight hours a day to her training. During these years of practice, performance and competition, she found herself getting injured quite often and needing to find ways to keep her body strong and healthy during her recoveries. This lead her down a path of food education, recipe creation and ballet workout transformation all wrapped up in her successful business: Naturally Sassy.

T

108 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Gregson-Williams’ background in ballet, combined with her passionate pursuit of health education, has transformed her into a health expert, equipped with a rare perspective and interest in helping women feel confident in their bodies. GregsonWilliams started to take her health into her own hands, ironically, when she was injured from ballet. While she hung up her pointe shoes in 2016, her intuitive drive propelled her into a new spotlight. What many would find to be a major setback, Gregson-Williams saw as an opportunity. She became a food editor at her sister’s magazine, which led to the creation of her blog, publishing a cookbook, making a line of nutrition bars at Whole Foods and her ballet blast global online workout studio. One of Gregson-Williams’ goals is to help people understand food is a tool for their bodies, and to deter others from believing that words

like “calories” and “carbs” are scary. She compared one’s body to being as unique as a fingerprint, no two are exactly the same, which means that no two react the same way to the foods they are given. GregsonWilliams champions for everyone to “never get caught up in someone else’s ‘healthy’” by listening to their own bodies and then taking their individualized steps toward healthier living. Her time as a dancer taught her a lot about how misinformed she was about food and her body’s relationship with food, and now she’s using her wealth of knowledge to help others foster healthier relationships with the food they eat and to make sure they understand that “the way you look is not your worth.” For Gregson-Williams, sustaining a healthy eating lifestyle begins with meal prepping, and educating ourselves on what we are putting into our bodies. She agrees that often a person’s relationship with food is determined by the amount of time they have and are willing to dedicate to it, which can be made easier by making thoughtful meals ahead of time. Gregson-Williams believes that “one of the biggest misconceptions

For GregsonWilliams, sustaining a healthy eating lifestyle begins with meal prepping, and educating ourselves on what we are putting into our bodies. about health is that it is limited to how you eat and how frequently you work out—a lot of it is about how you feel, and there are a lot of things that connect that.” She says ‘health’ is really about “the art of life.” Gregson-Williams’ time training in ballet was one where she had little to no education about the foods she was eating or what she was putting into her body, and one where she felt like she “didn’t have a relationship with food at all,” a sentiment that is the complete opposite for her now. Gregson-Williams says what catapulted her into being a health pro was that she wasn’t one, and that she feels so adamant about practicing a healthy lifestyle now “because she went through a crazy transformation and directly used those tools for other women in a larger picture.” Her journey started from just trying to help herself, to helping small groups of women—including other injured dancers and moms pre- and postchildbirth—to helping thousands through her recipes and workouts on her popular blog and app. GregsonWilliams’ growth in connecting with all of these people was a slow build, but she never stopped dreaming about the impact it could have. She encourages people to “keep the teenage optimism forever, don’t put limitations on what you’re capable of.” For her, her business flourished because she simply didn’t know where or when to stop. Gregson-Williams and her work are trying to break the traditional idea of “perfection” in order to encourage people to form healthy relationships with food and with their bodies. She’s making health, in both food and physical form, more accessible, and the characteristic of confidence more attainable, simply by starting with education in these areas. It took all poise and strength of a ballerina to create Naturally Sassy, and now Gregson-Williams is giving those two traits to all of the people who come in contact with herself, her business, or her food. Confidence, grace, and a healthy plate are enough to change anyone’s life, and Gregson-Williams’ story is a perfect example.

Sassy’s Tips for Meal Prepping Like a Pro TIP

1

• “Spend one day making all of your lunches for the rest of the week, or make an extra serving of whatever meal you’d like each day and save it for the next.” TIP

2

• Make three salads every week! “Not just leafy, green salads, but real, whole food salads that have a grain as a base, and then keep sides separate to mix up for different combos.” TIP

3

• “Use a variety of foods to avoid getting bored. With peppers, there are all sorts of kinds to use or test out. It’ll let you try something new and challenge you to be more creative.” TIP

4

• Think you don’t have enough time? “What do you value more, your time in the hour or the money you’re spending on food during the week eating out? Most people want to save money and do it in less time, which is why meal prep is a great option.” TIP

5

• “If you just spend three hours on a Sunday, mostly waiting for things to cook, you can have all of your meals done for the rest of the week.”

Palm Desert’s first luxury hotel to be built in over 30 years, Hotel Paseo, has been making lasting impressions since its opening in March 2018. Dubbed as one of the most Instagrammable hotels of the region, this midcentury modern-themed hotel is an artistic dream. In short? Everything you want in a getaway is right here at Hotel Paseo. “Hotel Paseo offers guests once-in-alifetime experiences,” says Judy Esterbrook, Director of Sales and Marketing. If Hotel Paseo wasn’t already on your bucket list, it will be once you’ve read this.

AIRSTREAM, YOU STREAM • In the hotel’s backyard sits the fully-restored, vintage 1950s trailer featuring a queen bed, kitchenette and patio—complete with an awning and Adirondack chairs. The Airstream is available for events and receptions, and will soon be a room that guests can book overnight.

SPA-LA-LA • In need of decadent relaxation? Spa La Lé is a must on your agenda, including their signature 24-Karat Gold Drench treatment—this age-defying facial includes real gold! “This is a truly relaxing experience, where we focus on the whole journey for our guests,” says Esterbrook.

• Just a few steps away from Shops at El Paseo, Hotel Paseo is your ultimate girls weekend getaway. Stay in the Glamour Room with a mixology bar and Hollywood-style mirror for getting ready. Then, take your celebrations poolside in your private cabana— facial mist by Lather included!

• True to the district’s local art history, Hotel Paseo has its own art gallery which is comprised of curated pieces mostly from local artists. Esterbrook states “It’s an eclectic collection, from the canvas works in the lobby to the fun, thought-provoking pieces that line the hallways.”

Soak in Silence • You don’t know relaxation unless you’ve booked the Oasis Spa Room— complete with a soaking tub in the middle of the room to enjoy right after your spa treatment. Game On • Take your competitive side to the lawn for a friendly game of shuffleboard or cornhole. Hotel Paseo’s lawn is stocked with fun outdoor games for the whole squad!
