Foodie Guide

A Is for Appetite Our A-Z Foodie Guide of Los Angeles

editor's note What did we do before we started taking photos of our food and sharing them on social media? Before avocado toast and $7 oat milk matcha lattes? Aside from the fact that the way we view food has slightly changed, food has always been a part of every culture. Sitting down to eat brings people together for laughs and good conversations—and sitting down with a glass of wine, surrounded by loved ones, is personally one of my favorite things to do. One of the greatest parts about Los Angeles is, in fact, the food. A melting pot of different cultures, LA shines with a variety of cuisines, flavors and dining experiences. From indulging in a mouthwatering brunch to devouring fresh sushi to finally making a reservation at that famous Michelin-starred restaurant, we’re sharing the best places to dine in all of the city—from A to Z. Whatever it is you’re craving, we’ve got you

covered. Call up your foodie friends and hit the town runnin’. Within this issue of LOCALE, our cover star George Lopez talks comedy and cuisine (pg. 36). Pizzana chef Daniele Uditi (pg. 30) and cookbook author Elana Horwich (pg. 28) dish their favorite gems in LA. Alyssa Wasko, founder and designer of DONNI., gives us the ultimate casual look for cruising around the city (pg. 78), and if you’re stumped on where to escape next, you’re going to want to read all about The Rustic Inn at Jackson Hole (pg. 102). Whether you’re spending these next few months in the sunshine at the beach or bundled in a cabin après ski (one of the many reasons to adore Southern California during this time of the year), I hope this issue sparks inspiration, teaches you something new or simply makes you really hungry. Dig in!

TAYLOR GORSKI Content Editor taylor@localemagazine.com | @taylorgorski

When meeting with an icon like George Lopez, one comes with a vague expectation of encountering an inflated ego. In the case of Lopez, however, these presumptions proved unfounded. Basking in the atmosphere of The Brews Hall, the comic legend was cheerful and fun to be around. His positive attitude had an influence on the rest of the crew, starting with photographer Jared Schlachet, who remarked, “George has a great personality. He really turned it on.”

Lopez’s instincts for humor seamlessly infiltrate most of his interactions, and even his throwaway jokes meet their mark. At one point, this writer accidentally wandered in front of the camera while checking out the menu of Chingon Kitchen, prompting Lopez to quip, “Looking to get in the shot?” Aside from highlighting Lopez himself, the shoot’s goal was to make The Brews Hall look appealing—which is no Herculean task, considering how sleekly attractive the structure is. Schlachet stated, “We were trying to capture this amazing ambient light.” Lopez seemed at ease here, which should come as no surprise, because The Brews Hall is designed to afford visitors an opportunity to let go of the workaday world’s stresses. “The Brews Hall is a wonderful location,” said fashion stylist Michelle Brookhurst. “All the Chingon Kitchen restaurants have a rich cultural aesthetic and so many artistic details in their design.” From an aesthete’s point of view, one couldn’t say it better, but makeup artist and hairstylist Aimee Circosta Pesendian tried by summing up the day’s adventure in one line: “This seems like a place I’d come to have a beer.”

OLDEST BAR IN VENICE

Ò I love Townhouse because it is a Venice bar through and through. Every city needs an old standard, and this is the spot. The first time I went, there was a comedy and burlesque show in the basement. I felt like it was 1920! There is a sticky old-world vibe that feels haunted (est.1915) that keeps locals coming back. Order a bourbon “you call it.” www.townhousevenice.com

RETRO VINTAGE VIBES

Ò Basement Tavern has this speakeasy vibe that you just melt into. They have live music, and it’s one of the only bars in Santa Monica that stays open ‘til 2 a.m. Indulge in a whisky cocktail; it’s the No. 1 bar seller of Buffalo Trace! I am a huge fan of the El Viejo—made with mescal, peated spray, agave and bitters. www.basementtavern.com

WORLD-CLASS

Ò Gwen is an old-world European butcher shop and elegant restaurant. My husband and I came here for our oneyear anniversary. We were greeted with complimentary champagne by one of the owners, Curtis Stone. Start with the housemade charcuterie. www.gwenla.com

Photographed By: Charlie Chipman | Illustrations By: Vicente Martí Solar

Ò La Vecchia Cucina is my favorite date night spot. Bartenders Scott and Kevin are masters at a vodka martini straight up and slightly dirty—a classic cocktail. After dinner, I love to indulge in their lemon hazelnut meringue with a double espresso and their housemade limoncello. This is a restaurant where you feel comfortable alone, on a date or with a crew of friends and family. Ask for Matt, Liz or Oliver, and Manager Tao will show you the way!

A LOVE FOR LA

What I love the most is the warmth I’ve received from Los Angeles. I’m an immigrant, and as an immigrant, you need to prove yourself to people. LA embraced me when we opened up Pizzana with so much love and warmth.

HIGH-PROFILE FLAVOR

Ò Spoon and Pork is a Filipino restaurant with a little bit of Latino influence. The food is just outstanding...simple food with a lot of flavor. I order the Patita, which is pig trotter. Your food is often brought to you by one of the brothers (Ray and Jay) who started the restaurant. www.spoonandpork.com

FRESHLY BAKED

Ò At Gjusta, I order a slice of square pizza—usually the one with mushroom, thyme and taleggio. The dough is so crispy—it reminds me of a slice I used to have in Italy as a kid. I like to go during off hours (around 7 p.m.) when things slow down, and they’re not too busy. www.gjusta.com

WHEN I’M NOT EATING ITALIAN FOOD…

Ò I love the queso tacos at Birrieria San Marcos. You can order a little bit of birria, which is a beautiful braised meat that you can dip the taco into. Even though they’re a food truck and relatively cheap, the care that they put into making even a simple cheese taco is amazing. @birrieriasanmarcos

CRAZY FOR BURRATA

Ò I’m a burrata lover, and I love Burrata House’s partnership with Di Stefano burrata, which is the best local burrata you’ll find. They make a simple sandwich that is packed with flavor. My favorite is the rosetta bread with prosciutto crudo, Italian olive oil, salt and pepper. www.burratahouse.com

Photographed By: Matt Misisco | Illustrations By: Vicente Martí Solar

Ò Felix Trattoria’s polpette is one of the most amazing appetizers I’ve ever had in my life. They’re unusual meatballs that are fried, not soaked in sauce. Pappardelle bolognese “vecchia scuola” is exactly how bolognese should be done. It’s a meat ragu and very traditional—it makes me feel at home. Evan is one of the most amazing pasta makers in the country. He’s an artisan just like me—he works everything by hand.

After four decades of delighting audiences, garnering accolades and breaking barriers in the entertainment industry, legendary performer George Lopez is making a name for himself in the food and beverage world. The venue for Lopez’s new passion project, The Brews Hall, is a strikingly modern, multifaceted food hall in scenic Torrance, which officially opened its doors in November 2019. Though the sleek new venue contains a handful of other restaurants (including a burger joint sponsored by sports commentator Colin Cowherd), its centerpiece belongs to Lopez. Diners in the mood for Mexican cuisine can sate their cravings at George Lopez’s Chingon Kitchen, a counter-top eatery which serves south-of-the-border fare with a twist, while beer-lovers might quench their thirst at George Lopez Brewing Co., a Latin-inspired brewery with one-of-a-kind offerings. the towering comedic talent who altered the television landscape with “George Lopez,” his autobiographical sitcom which aired from 2002-07 on ABC, everything begins and ends with family—even if those beginnings weren't easy. "I think that if you look at the definition of comedy, it's not when things go right; it's when they go wrong," says Lopez. "I was raised by my grandmother (Benita)...the whole attitude—the 'Why are you crying?’ vibe, 'Who do think you are?'—that was from her. Everything came with a disclaimer... If (I was) eating soup and didn't have a spoon, I'd ask for one, and she would say, 'Okay, that's your Christmas present.’ She was my muse."

Z

Benita was also an inspiration in the kitchen; her influence sparked Lopez's culinary ambitions. "In stand-up, I would talk about my grandmother keeping her salsa in a mayo jar with no lid...that stuck with people, so I did this as an opportunity to honor her because she was also a really good cook." While performing at the San Manuel Casino in Highland two years ago, Lopez received an opportunity to realize these edible imaginings when a representative of the venue reached out and asked if he would have any interest in opening a Mexican restaurant in their space. Lopez swiftly agreed, and Chingon Kitchen was born. "I started talking about the menu right away," recalls Lopez. "The tortillas, the taquitos, the carne asada... It was an easy fit." Having found his niche, Lopez linked up with Michael Zislis, an entrepreneur and restaurateur, whose Zislis Group owns properties like Shade Hotels and The Strand House. Zislis was set on expansion, and after considering a number of

other areas, the pair settled on Torrance as the site of the ambitious experiment. Lopez says, “The city of Torrance has been great... This area is perfect for us. There's parking, it's easy to find and it's very impressive what they've done with this space.” The space Lopez refers to is the former site of a Goodyear tire shop, which has been converted into a sprawling dining space that houses four eateries and two breweries. Outside stands a looming, 27-foot silo branded with the logo of Zislis's Buzzrock Brewing Co. Inside, you'll find rows of brass tanks (fermenting vessels), all filled with sudsy pilsners and stouts. Additionally, there's a charming outdoor patio and a row of games to entertain younger visitors. It is precisely this broad-scale appeal that Lopez feels will set Brews Hall apart in the area. "There's four food options here and a full bar...so if you come with kids, [everyone] can get what they want. As a comedian, I entertain a Latino audience with something that connects to them, but also something that's understood by everyone," explains Lopez. Lopez adopted this approach while selecting the food that would be served at Chingon Kitchen. The menu boasts traditional staples like tacos and burritos, as well as out-of-thebox offerings like artisan churros in cinnamon sugar and hand-hacked guacamole paired with fresh homemade chips from the comal. Chingon also provides for those with dietary restrictions through options like cauliflower tortillas and meat-free burritos. Lopez also insisted on authentic touches, such as a bucket of Jarritos Mexican sodas and a spiked horchata drink, infused with rum.

•One of Lopez’s most iconic jokes goes as follows: his grandmother says, “Go to your room,” to which he replies, “I don’t have a room.” Her response? “Then close your eyes.”

No Name, No Game •“Chingon” roughly translates to “badass.” Although Lopez states that its meaning is up for interpretation, “It’s a name I use in my stand-up...like ‘the King of Pop’ was for Michael Jackson, but for Latinos.”

“Sure, I see the end [of performing]. I do see the light at the end of the tunnel at some point. But to still be around and enjoy it is a beautiful thing.” —G E O R G E LO P E Z speaking of alcohol, the George Lopez Brewing Co. strives to realize an authentic, Mexicaninspired vision, pushing the flavor palate of their beer to new levels. This includes a grapefruit and lime IPA, an orange cream ale, a Horchata stout, a masa-inspired beer and, per Lopez, "a beer that tastes like the mix of El Presidente, Sprite and Brandy...which is a big drink in Mexico."

A

When asked about his favorite of all the choices offered at his Brews Hall outlets, Lopez takes a moment to consider, then returns with a surprising answer: "Probably the elote." The classic snack, most often doled out by street vendors, pairs grilled corn on the cob with mayonnaise, cayenne and chili powder, as well as a sprinkling of Cotija cheese. "When I was young, I saw people selling [elote] in the park, and I thought it was weird... Then, one day, I had one, and it was amazing. I want to bring that to the people here." The above notion sums up the motivation behind Lopez's art, whether it's food or comedy: a wish to expose the masses to his cultural touchstones in a way that never rings false or contrived. "I once saw a [stand-up comedian] going on stage, and he talked about his girlfriend. After the show I said, 'I didn't know you had a girlfriend.' He said, 'I don't. I just wrote material about it.' That really rang false to me, and I never wanted to do that. My [work] became my own." And so it has been since 1979, when a nervous 18-year-old from Mission Hills attended his first open mic. Now, 40 years later, Lopez is gearing up yet again for a brand new comedy special—his first

since 2017's “The Wall.” "All of my specials have a theme," he remarks. "The last one was political, but this one is more about minding your own business. Today we see...people calling the cops on kids selling water in the park or using the bathroom in Starbucks. We don't need to be policing other people. It's also about where we are as a country...and a bit about mortality." Sitting confidently amidst the looming Brews Hall floorspace that he was instrumental in bringing to life, it seems hard to fathom that Lopez would be questioning mortality. He appears to be a creator at the top of his game, expanding his empire into a whole new sphere of influence. But, though his love for comedy hasn't dwindled, Lopez says, "Sure, I see the end [of performing]. I do see the light at the end of the tunnel at some point. But to still be around and enjoy it is a beautiful thing." Still, Lopez grows excited when talking about his upcoming film projects, lighting up at the mention of No Man's Land, a modern Western in which he plays a driven Texas Ranger pursuing a young, white border patrol vigilante who shoots a Mexican immigrant before fleeing to Mexico. Despite a wellspring of opportunities ahead in the world of Hollywood, Lopez ultimately reserves his boldest future plans for Chingon Kitchen and George Lopez Brewing Co., outlets for which the cards read one thing: expansion. "This...is something I want to see grow. I'm looking to make it bigger," states Lopez. "Hey, maybe investors can even take it out to airports next.” And, even though he’s usually hilarious, it doesn't appear that the great comedian is joking this time.

“I work with people I can trust and know my standards for quality and sustainability,” he says. Several ingredients on the Best Girl menu are sourced locally. Seafood choices range from a half-dozen oysters to a fragrant, inimitable Portuguese fisherman’s stew. Chef Cimarusti works with fisheries, farmers and vendors up and down the coast. Over the years, he’s built steadfast relationships in the industry. “It all comes down to sourcing,” Chef Cimarusti explains. “We try to work with local vendors, and we’re lucky that—along the Pacific coast—there’s great diversity available to us.”

With plenty of restaurants popping up and boasting sustainable practices, Chef Cimarusti believes this approach is here to stay. “Shopping and eating sustainably should be important to all of us,” he says. “People are thinking about it more than they used to—it’s a movement that has gained momentum, and now there are so many environmentally conscious options out there.”

Eataly creates a marketplace experience rooted in high-quality and authentic ingredients. Eataly’s Head of Culinary for North America, Chef Denis Dello Stritto, goes into more detail. Q: Why are open, specialty marketplaces and food halls becoming increasingly popular? Chef Denis Dello Stritto: People are getting excited about marketplaces like Eataly because they can connect with all aspects of the food they are eating. They see people making the bread, they see a butcher cutting their meat and a chef cooking that meat in a restaurant. It’s a more immersive experience than just going to a restaurant. Q: Why should someone choose to visit a marketplace/food hall versus a standalone restaurant? DDS: At Eataly, you come and stay a while. You learn about the producers behind the products you are eating and buying, the authentic products directly imported from Italy, a recipe or cooking tip from one of our onsite experts and how seasonality affects Italy’s cuisine. Overall, you will have a better experience by knowing your food better. Q: What is something that everyone should experience at Eataly? DDS: A learning experience—customers often leave with a new perception and improved appreciation for Italian food and culture. Also, we don’t just want to share our food and culture, we want you to take it home. We cook what we sell, and we sell what we cook.

The miso salmon bowl features a delicate salmon fillet that’s topped with stir-fry vegetables, drizzled with spicy sriracha mayonnaise and served atop a cloud of steamed rice; the famous Spam Musubi & Saimin is a delicious homemade noodle soup with fried Spam, which is wrapped in flavorful edible seaweed. K Is for King’s Hawaiian TASTE THE SWEET FLAVORS OF THE TROPICS AT THIS LANDMARK BAKERY Since 1977, King’s Hawaiian offers customers a taste of tropical paradise with a menu chock-full of tropical cakes and traditional Hawaiian fare. Sweet and savory aromas, along with ukulele melodies make this family-owned Torrance restaurant and bakery feel like an island vacation—without the pricey plane ticket.

If you’re looking to taste the best of Hawaii, however, we recommend the Mix Combination Plate. With this dish you’re sure to get the most bang for your buck. Served family-style, the plate is packed with three mouthwatering meats: Huli Huli boneless chicken, marinated for 24 hours then charbroiled over open flames; teriyaki beef that is thinly sliced and chargrilled with housemade sauce; and the best pulled kalua pork, which is slowly smoked. The plate is served with steamed rice, homemade potato macaroni salad and a side of lomi salmon that resembles ceviche. Leave paradise satisfied—and possibly with leftovers! DR. PETER LEE is a renowned plastic surgeon and also the Founder and CEO of Wave Plastic Surgery Center, the largest practice of its kind in the nation. Wave took Southern California with such success that a new facility recently opened in San Francisco, with even more on the horizon. Dr. Lee uses his business to help bring more options to more people, paying special attention to individualized patient care. It’s safe to say that your beauty is in good hands with Dr. Lee and the team of doctors at Wave!

At the age of 14, Dr. Lee began attending a university for a special physics program, but before long, he decided that he wanted to work with something more tangible. Dr. Lee then turned his focus to medical school, in an effort to make a difference in peoples’ lives. He says, “[Plastic surgery] is not just medicine and science, but art and creativity as well—it all goes hand in hand.” Now, Dr. Lee is an award-winning plastic surgeon with international acclaim. He also travels to teach microsurgery, with an emphasis on minimal incision. Dr. Lee has a unique perspective on plastic surgery that rebuffs the pervasive vanity stereotype of the industry. He (and Wave, by extension) believes that cosmetic surgeries are primarily about increasing a patient’s quality of life. Having the ability to fix your flaws with surgery allows people to gain confidence and shed whatever insecurities they carry. According to Dr. Lee’s personal philosophy, “Aesthetic treatments are a cure for a lot of people who aren’t as confident, and when you do something to make yourself look better, it changes who you are.” 76 LOCALE MAGAZINE

ONWARD AND UPWARD • Wave has set its sights on expansion and plans to open up locations in the South and East Bay—after that, the company is off to take on the Big Apple! SPEC-TACULAR SOLUTIONS • At Wave Plastic Surgery Center, there’s a large focus on providing care for Asian-predominant surgeries like the double eyelid procedure. Dr. Lee saw a need for this specialization in the industry.

While Dr. Lee has worked with sick patients in the past and has even performed reconstructive surgery for people suffering from cancer, he enjoys his current occupation because, “In the cosmetic realm, you’re not sick—you’re healthy. You’re looking for improvement.” Dr. Lee sees the curative function of plastic surgery in his work, which he believes is often overlooked since the changes that occur appear only on the outside. What the common observer cannot see in cosmetic surgery patients are changes to their everyday happiness. “The gratification of increasing a patient’s quality of life is what I enjoy,” Dr. Lee explains. Whether you want to lose a few extra pounds or that wonky family nose you inherited, it’s important to never let the small things keep you from going out and enjoying life. As Dr. Lee puts it, “When we stop doing things is when we get older.” Dr. Lee’s spirit of improving a patient’s quality of life through cosmetic surgery translates over to the company model as well. Wave Plastic Surgery Center recognizes the importance of well-informed and singularized cosmetic surgery care, from the first interview to the last checkup. “We invest heavily in a variety of options,” explains

LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS • Wave Plastic Surgery Center has locations in Los Angeles, Irvine, Rowland Heights, Arcadia and San Francisco. Pop by for a 30-minute consultation with an expert plastic surgeon if you think cosmetic surgery might help improve your quality of life.

“[Plastic surgery] is not just medicine and science, but art and creativity as well—it all goes hand in hand.” —DR. PETER LEE

Dr. Lee, which is why Wave Plastic Surgery Center is set up to allow for specifically designed individual care, the likes of which are rare in cosmetic surgery clinics. Since Wave is so much larger than other plastic surgery companies, they can offer a much wider selection of procedures which, in turn, gives patients a chance to sit down and decide on the absolute best path for their foray into cosmetic alterations. “Something we stress [at Wave] is to feel out and get an answer from the patient,” he says. Dr. Lee and the doctors at Wave Plastic Surgery Center are aiming to do more with their skills than just alter a patient’s physical appearance— they want to empower people by giving them the control to change parts of themselves that hold them back in life. Wave has doctors from different backgrounds with varying realms of experience, but all of them are there for one reason: to help their patients experience life exactly the way they want to experience it. Dr. Lee’s humanistic approach to cosmetic surgery, as well as his success in his field, has opened a platform where anyone has the power to change anything they don’t like about themselves. “Wave covers all spectrums,” says Dr. Lee, “and we offer the most realistic, honest expectations.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 77

In a town where people love wearing flip-flops, five guys had an idea to revolutionize an overlooked everyday accessory. In 2009, socks were an underappreciated apparel category. Aaron Hennings—along with Jeff Kearl, Ryan Kingman, John Wilson and Taylor Shupe—saw an opportunity to inject personality into a product that would allow people to show self-expression. Soon enough, Stance was born and has changed the way we dress our feet ever since. 82 LOCALE MAGAZINE

“ WE WANTED TO ESTABLISH STANCE IN THE WORLD OF PERFORMANCE SOCKS BY SHOWCASING OUR PRODUCTS ON SOME OF THE MOST DEMANDING ATHLETES IN THE WORLD.” — AARON HENNINGS

One Wheel? No Problem • Each team member has talents, but not all of them can do circus tricks. Hennings continues to impress his staff with his unicycle skills!

“Socks were the last piece of apparel on the human body that didn’t have a branded category leader,” Hennings says, “so we figured it was time to claim it.” The idea to create Stance was rooted in the belief that an ignored product category could be disrupted and brought to life with a heavy dose of creativity. “We knew that great brands become category leaders by disrupting markets that have been neglected, asleep and ripe for innovation,” says Hennings. Hennings and his partners have deep roots in the surfand-sport apparel industry.

Prior to diving into the sock and underwear industry, he served as Art Director at Billabong for nine years. When deciding on a name for the business, the men focused on the connection to feet. “Stance has a double meaning for us, referencing both the physical positioning of the legs and feet during activities like skateboarding and basketball, as well as being an intellectual or emotional

attitude,” shares Hennings. The deeper meaning of Stance shines through at the company headquarters in San Clemente. There is space for employees to play and physically express themselves, whether it be on the skate ramp or the volleyball court. There are also more traditional artistic expressions throughout the space, such as murals, paintings and photographs. But the most unexpected feature at Stance headquarters? It would have to be “a custom-built Harley Davidson ’58 Panhead motorcycle parked in our front reception area...leaking oil,” says Hennings. The mantra of Stance is to embrace “the uncommon thread.” Within the first five years of business, they’ve helped turn socks into one of the most popular accessories worldwide. You can find Stance in 40 countries and counting,

“ WE WANTED TO BUILD A COMPANY THAT WAS A REFLECTION OF OUR PERSONALITIES AND CREATE A PLATFORM FOR THE THINGS WE LOVED.” — AARON HENNINGS

igniting global creativity. “We wanted to build a company that was a reflection of our personalities and create a platform for the things we loved,” shares Hennings. “Stance was born as partbusiness opportunity, part-fashion movement and part-entrepreneurial undertaking.” In 2015, Stance laid new ground by becoming the first official sock of the NBA. “We wanted to establish Stance in the world of performance socks by showcasing our products on some of the most demanding athletes in the world,” explains Hennings. “Basketball has a connection to both on-court performance and sneaker culture. The NBA was interested in our ability to provide a product to both markets.” Stance continues to provide the league’s 30 teams with branded designs, which are available for fans through retail outlets.

The mantra of Stance is to embrace “the uncommon thread.” “We are working with Chicago-based graphic design artist Cody Hudson as part of our ‘Untitled’ collection,” Hennings shares. Donovan Mitchell, a Utah Jazz player who is the latest Stance brand ambassador, is working with the company on limited edition socks that feature his favorite emoji and his own personal Spida logo. After all the success, Stance continues to be wellgrounded. “The greatest rewards have been the ability to bring creative ideas to fruition as well as build a brand and working environment that provides

deliverance from corporate confinement,” Hennings says. Is there any compliment that still gets Hennings fired up? Fans will send in photos of their new tattoos featuring the Stance argyle logo and tell the team how much they admire the brand. Now that’s modern brand loyalty! Consider yourself a Stance fan? Then get ready for oneof-a-kind products in 2020. Stance has some incredible technologies launching this year, featuring enhanced fabrics that place an emphasis on durability and softness. We’re ready for all the feels.

Undressing It All MEET LYNDSAY SOPRANO, THE HOST OF ALMOST BARE PODCAST WRITTEN BY: TAYLOR HAYNES PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: TAMAR LEVINE

Podcasts are a great way to learn about any topic under the sun–why not learn about sex during your commute to work too? “I want to help people learn about sex in a way that prioritizes love, tolerance and communication,” says Lyndsay Soprano, the host of Almost Bare Podcast. “I discuss current events and politics in relation to our sex lives, our rights and our sexuality.” The host’s conversations are certainly a far cry from that health class you took freshman year of high school and offer a relevant and refreshing look at sexuality in the country today. When it comes to questions about sex, relationships or–hell–even your own nether regions that you feel too squeamish to ask about, Soprano isn’t ashamed to broach sometimes-controversial topics that people aren’t always willing to discuss, ranging from porn to STDs to polyamory. The best part is that she approaches these topics with compassion and an open mind. “I want to be honest about my beliefs and transparent about my life experiences to help others out there feel more normal in their sexual experiences, beliefs and lifestyles,” Soprano says. Talking about sex, however, doesn’t always have to be raunchy or nauseating. While Almost Bare covers realms that might make you uncomfortable, it maintains a classy and approachable tone throughout. “Sexual health isn’t taught well in school, and social media influences so much sexual behavior,” says Soprano. “I feel it’s important to elevate the conversation in a lighthearted way that isn’t raunchy and gross.” Chances are you can gain something from every episode, regardless of your sexual experience. “I found my voice through this podcast,” says Soprano. “It can be exhilarating and scary, but I hope that by sharing my stories I can help others have the strength to share theirs.” At the core of Almost Bare, there’s an emphasis on open and honest communication and helping listeners have healthier conversations about their sexuality– both in and out of the bedroom.

Sixteen Going on Stardom FOR THIS FRESH-FACED STARLET, FOLLOWING HER DREAMS MEANS PUTTING IN THE HOURS WRITTEN BY: ALLIE LEBOS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: TIZIANO LUGLI

When Lizzy Greene was in second grade, her music teacher encouraged her to become involved in theater. Her knack for performing was obvious, and two years later, Greene was signed by an agent. “After going on my third audition, I booked ‘Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn,’ and before I knew it, I was on Nickelodeon,” explains Greene. Since then, she has consistently worked 10 hours a day, five days a week. However, her current project, “A Million Little Things,” has been her most impactful thus far. Greene loves a challenge. It’s emotionally taxing, and the deep places she is forced to go in order to play her character, Sophie Dixon, has led to her feeling more capable and evolved as an actress. “I’ll never forget when my friend, a casting director, told me before going into an audition that the most important thing was to ‘make people feel something,’” recalls Greene. “That’s what we’re doing with ‘A Million Little Things.’ The responses and tweets we get from the show mean everything.” Greene considers her transition from starring in a kids show to acting in a serious and heartfelt drama to be her biggest accomplishment as an actress. Without anyone ever sitting her down to explain the difference in technique, she was faced with the challenge

of learning on-the-job as she entered new territory. When asked where she finds her inspiration while acting, Greene explains, “I honestly find inspiration in everything, but most of all, I find it in my fellow actors. Being on set is almost like attending a master class for acting every day.”

No Days Off • On her days off, Greene prefers to keep busy. Whether it’s expressing herself through sketching, catching up with friends or playing soccer, Greene makes the most of her time. Star Child • Though she is only 16, Greene has been acting for more than half her life. After beginning her journey at age seven, Greene became a working actress just two years later at only 9 years old.

Though being a working actress has been a part of the 16-yearold’s life for quite some time now, she is still very much engaged in her role as a student. Due to the early start of her career, Greene has been homeschooled since she was in fourth grade. “Being homeschooled is both a blessing and a curse. I have had to make a lot of sacrifices when it comes to personal experiences like spending time with friends and other extracurricular activities,” says Greene. She recognizes, however, that with these sacrifices has come a great deal of understanding and respect for the industry that she is so passionate about and thankful to be a part of. With feature films on her mind, Lizzy Greene is sure to find success in any opportunity that calls.

If this setting sounds even slightly familiar, then it’s time to brighten up your workspace. Numerous scientific studies show there is a direct link between decreased employee stress levels in relation to displaying greenery around the office. In fact, when plants are present, individuals typically feel more at ease, resulting in increased productivity and motivation. So, why not include greenery in your office?

I

Sure, not all of us are gifted with green thumbs, but luckily, the creative team at Santa Ana’s Instant Jungle International is. Specializing in an array of plant types, including tropical foliage, traditional plants and even silk creations, Instant Jungle is a full-service wholesale and retail nursery that provides both interior and exterior designs, plant installation and plant maintenance. Interior Sales Representative Carol Grandy offers the 411 on the services this local exotic plant kingdom provides, along with advice on where to begin when developing a personal green haven. For those who may be more horticulturally challenged than others, it would be wise to opt for a plant that requires less maintenance. Grandy explains, “There are some plants that don’t require water on a weekly basis; however, they should be dusted, checked for pests and have any yellow or brown leaves removed.” She notes that dracaenas and pothos are easy to keep alive as they are very adaptable to interior conditions. Another important factor to take into consideration is the amount of natural light available in the intended space. Many indoor plants do not require an abundance of natural light, but some is certainly needed. On that note, some plants should be avoided entirely. “Anything that is meant to grow outside in full sun will not survive inside. You cannot acclimate an olive or citrus tree to interior conditions no matter how much your decorator wants you to!” says Grandy. Aside from aesthetic appeal, Grandy explains that these plush assortments also bring added benefits to individuals— mentally and physically! “There was a study by the University of Queensland in 2014 that found plants increase productivity [at] work by 15%,” Grandy notes. The study concluded that by incorporating plants in the workspace, employers were showing their employees that they cared about their welfare. “Plants create a more comfortable and enjoyable workspace,” Grandy says. 98 LOCALE MAGAZINE

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE GREEN AND SERENE Transform Your Workspace With Instant Jungle’s Tropical Foliage Installations

Believe it or not, beautifying the office by adding some decorative floral flair—married with varying shades of nature’s greens—can go a long way in transforming a dull workspace into a colorful, happy place. “We can customize any [arrangement] to fit our clients’ needs,” Grandy says. If you’d prefer to leave it to the experts, its 40 years of experience and extensively trained technicians make Instant Jungle your go-to for design consultation, installation and maintenance. Here, Grandy takes us step-by-step into the creation process of a wall installation piece for an office.

Step 1:

• It’s important to first get a feel for the space you are working with. Style, layout and mood all play a role in creating the desired ambiance. “I met with our clients to tour their facility and get a read on what they envisioned in their building,” Grandy explains. “I assessed the light levels, measured the spaces in each location, made notes and took pictures.” She recommends to “select something that fits the space and will survive with the amount of lighting available.”

Step 2:

• Once the overall look and feel has been determined, brainstorm ideas of the best plant options that will work in the space. “I was able to make several suggestions to them on the spot and [the clients] were very receptive,” Grandy says.

Step 4:

• Confirm which options are available and begin pairing your plants with complimenting accents. Grady says, “I sent our client images of several plant wall designs, so they could choose the plant pallet that they liked best [and] that would survive on their walls.”

Step 5:

• Finalize, install and maintain! “Plant maintenance is very important!” Grady explains that regular weekly maintenance is best, so try and make it part of your weekly routine. “Check and maintain the plant first thing Monday morning when you arrive…or make it the last thing you do on Friday before you leave.”

Step 3:

• Begin mapping out the plant of attack. “I went back to the office and selected which wall systems would work best in each location, along with containers and the right plane for each space.”

Crazy Little Thing Called Mod Revivals Furnishings and a Dreamy Airbnb Are a Match Made in Heaven WRITTEN BY: PATRICIA KEMP • PHOTOGRAPHED BY: RACHEL HOOPS

Palm Springs

Expert : Steven Henke Credentials: Director of Community Development, Revivals Step 1

• “Don’t be afraid of pieces that need a little work. Look for resale treasures at thrift shops and reupholster with new fabrics of colors, patterns and textures authentic to your style.”

Step 2

• “Go high and low. Splurge on a high-end item like a sofa that defines your space, and then surround it with inexpensive pieces, such as graphic throw pillows.”

Step 3

“Don’t be afraid of pieces that need a little work…”

• “The 1960s were all about going natural. Unstained woods are a huge part of the midcentury modern design, so look for pieces that show off clean lines of teak, walnut and rosewood grain.”

Step 4

• “Keep a running list of room and furniture dimensions on your phone. You never know when you’ll find the perfect furniture piece at an estate sale.”

Step 5

• “Shop what’s new to you. Revivals is a great source to find your personal ‘mixed-century vibe.’ Combine new pieces with thrift store finds from various decades. The end result will feel more personal. One of our customers took four peg legs from a 1950s sofa and put them on a new couch for a look that felt midcentury in a very modern way.”

Step 6

• “Be neutral like Switzerland. Midcentury designers loved earth tones like brown, rust and green with bright accent colors of red, blue and yellow.”

Step 7

• “Decorate on your timeline. Vintage hunting requires patience. The best home collections are built over time from different places like flea markets.”

The midcentury was all about shaking things up. Out with your mother’s matchy-matchy bedroom set. Primary pops of color and geometric patterns were in. Designers were also mixing materials like plywood, metal and glass for a sleek minimalist style. The Dream Home is a stunning Palm Springs Airbnb vacation pad (outfitted with new and used items from Revivals) that was designed to feel like you stepped into a time warp back into the 1960s. Steven Henke, the resale shop’s director of community development, offers tips on how to create your own sweet mod home. “You’re not living on the set of ‘Mad Men;’ it’s your place, so add your personality,” Henke says. 106 LOCALE MAGAZINE
