Editor's Note 104 Downtown Arts District

FROM BLASÉ TO “OH HEY!”

When Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum dominated the fashion industry through their dramatic yet iconic reality TV shows, my middle school self dreamed of rocking six-inch heels and couture dresses with all the grace and confidence that the legendary models had embodied. I went from flipping through channels to flipping through the pages of Vogue, completely and utterly enamored by the world of fashion. What mattered most to me wasn’t my appearance, but how I discovered my own style during a time when my self-identity crisis was at its peak. It’s not what you wear but how you wear it. The same can be said for this magazine, which I hope guides you through all the different poses of life like Banks and Klum did for me. Strap yourselves in for a shopping trip around Orange County, Los Angeles, San Diego and Greater Palm Springs with our Shoppe Guide (pg. 63), and then slow down and meet some local Shoppe Experts (pg. 51) who are dedicated to their (hand)craft. We’ll then introduce you to the incredible women of MADE by DWC in our Humanitarian Profile (pg. 80) before transporting you to our futuristic fashion photoshoot (pg. 72).

Once you seize your style, we’re calming our grumbling tummies with Cafe Gratitude’s vegan “Whole Bowl” in Meals Deconstructed (pg. 98) and getting a taste of Cal Mare’s Mediterranean Branzino (pg. 86). Then we’ll explore the Downtown Arts District (pg. 104) before crossing paths with Shelby and Sandy and their vibrant art in our Artist Spotlight (pg. 110). To round it all off, we’re escaping to the desert to marvel at the various exhibits at the Palm Springs Art Museum (pg. 114). The highlight of this magazine for me was meeting our cover star and pro athlete, Christen Press of the US Women’s National Soccer Team (pg. 40), who not only taught herself how to stay grounded during life’s highs and lows but also how to kick the expectations away. Our conversation still resonates with me, and to all the beautiful and strong women reading, I’m sure it’ll do the same for you. Los Angeles is not only rich in fame and luxury but also diverse in lifestyles and cultures. Whether bright or hidden, we are all gems, and there is no better place to polish ourselves than the City of Angels. As the woman behind the iconic smize will always say: “Never dull your shine for somebody else.”

In a room full of stars, Christen Press undeniably shined the brightest. There was a gravitational pull coming from her, whether by stares of admiration or a curiosity that prompted casual conversation. While most would recognize her on the soccer field by the number on her uniform, everyone on set knew the professional athlete by her aura—confidence, grace and profound strength.

I

When trying on different sporty outfits picked out by Stylist Sara Borgese and assisted by Kyle Kagamida and Gina Checchia, Press stood in front of the mirror with certainty and familiarity. She knew herself better than anyone, and when she sat down for hair and makeup, compliments only poured out from Hair Stylist Julia Savitskaya and Makeup Artist Ada Trinh for Press’ sweet and down-toearth personality. During our interview, Press never turned her attention away even though Savitskaya and Trinh danced around us to get her ready for the photoshoot. Press’ unwavering, magnetic, green eyes held me in place; not once did she hesitate with her words or her thoughts. Her focus was palpable, and throughout our conversation, it’s no wonder so many people

were allured by her presence. Intelligent, well-spoken and sincere, Press was that humble, all-around friend that you’d want to keep in your life forever. Each outfit came from an athlete’s dream wardrobe—Nike shoes, sports bras, workout pants and a tropical tracksuit—and each look was paired with a different monochromatic backdrop. For the first look, Press had her hair down and wore a uniform, holding a soccer ball comfortably against her hip. The second look offered more edge with an athletic jacket hanging off one shoulder. Savitskaya created two different ponytail ‘dos for the last two looks, bringing out Trinh’s natural-inspired makeup. Photographer Travis McCoy praised Press for her professional and calm demeanor, and in between shots, Press couldn’t help but break out a smile from the compliments. All the while, pop music played in the background, and even though the studio was small, the intimacy only amplified. As Kagamida fixed Press’ outfits with precision, she appeared as flawless as she was comfortable. Despite being on a tight schedule, by the end of the shoot, Press snuck in some shots outside the studio with McCoy before snapping a picture with me and smiling as though nothing could stop her.

LETTER TO... SISTERS WRITE A LETTER TO FUTURE DESIGNERS

Dear Future Designers, We are so honored to write you—you should feel so invigorated at this very moment in your accomplishments thus far. We write to you in the hope that you’re finally looking at this career choice as the one you’ve been called to be in—to be an example of true value systems and to stand strong in your foundation of virtues. Remember, fashion is more than just clothes—it’s an embodiment of expressing character. So, don’t worry so much if someone will like what you make. Get excited about how you’re going to help someone express themselves—on their best and worst days! Put your heart into each piece and think through the functionality so your muse is feeling confident in every way. Stay away from feeling like “you only work in fashion” and use your environment as a motivator to positively influence the business you are in. The difference between you and another designer isn’t competition—it is how you uniquely craft your story and what you are inspired by. Design isn’t about adhering to a set of rigid guidelines. It is about being unafraid to try. Often, we forget our purpose. Take the time to sit in silence, humble yourself and remember your purpose is ever-evolving as is our lives. If ever you feel lost, which you will, of all the loud voices to listen to, listen to God, your creator. Always know the path you are on but be prepared to pivot. You’ll come to find life is all about the pivot. Seek to be brave, wiser and more resilient. We all have the choice to fill our cups with worry, fear and anxiety, but isn’t it so much more fulfilling to fill it with joy, adventure and freedom?

An athlete is always on the move, and for pro soccer player Christen Press, there’s no stopping her adrenaline kick both on and off the field. From winning the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup with the US Women’s National Soccer Team to participating in the 2016 Summer Olympics, Press continues to run, aim and shoot no matter the number of victories and losses. With the spotlight following every moment of her athletic career, you might wonder how Press manages to contain the exhaustion solely within soccer matches. The formula to her physical and mental health is staying rooted and knowing when to slow down to catch her breath during life’s quiet moments.

In the city of Palos Verdes Estates, California, there was a family that was obsessed with soccer. Press and her two sisters started playing the sport, among many others, after their parents decided that learning about the principles of team dynamics was very important. “It was definitely a family affair with my mom and dad managing, coaching my teams, watching videos online, studying how to play soccer and understanding the rules—all of that,” Press recalls. “Before I was even in high school, we were like a crazy soccer family.”

I

Come high school, Press never really thought about shooting for the big leagues. Her goal setting was and still is in the present. During her younger years, she didn’t play for any of the US national teams, but once she attended Stanford and saw that her teammates were making the National Team, that’s when her perspective shifted. That shift led to a whirlwind of highs and lows. Press lost in the NCAA College Cup two years in a row despite becoming Stanford’s all-time leading scorer. After college, Press was drafted to magicJack in 2011 and hoped to attract the USWNT’s attention, but it wasn’t enough—even with ‘Rookie of the Year’ attached to her

name. Then in early 2012, the Women’s Professional Soccer league folded. Without another moment’s hesitation, the disheartened athlete packed her bags and moved to Sweden where she would sign with Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC. Though one opportunity slipped out of reach, another unexpectedly fell into her hands. Press let go of all the validations and expectations that she’d carried from back home and simply played for fun during her time abroad. A few months after signing with the professional team in Sweden, by a stroke of luck, the Head Coach of the USWNT, who is originally from Sweden, was visiting her native country and watched a few of Press’ matches. Shortly after, Press got her first call up. “It was such a good lesson for me because sometimes letting go is how you come into things,” she explains. “We try to force things in our life. We try to shove ourselves through these small holes. If we just let ourselves flow, we fit so easily.” Press believes there shouldn’t be a word for failure because everything is transient. “Nothing's finite,” she declares. “If you lose a game, you've lost—that's definite, but you haven’t failed because you’ll play another game.” By adjusting her mindset, Press has allowed herself to play more freely, and regardless of what happens, she has a strong hold on her sense of self.

Native Knowledge • For anyone who visits the South Bay, Press recommends going to Manhattan Beach. Hit up Fishing With Dynamite or Two Guns Espresso, her favorite restaurant and coffee shop, respectively. Story of Her Life • During high school, Press’ favorite courses were English and essay writing. She’s kept a journal since third grade and reveals that she has a high stack of journals at her parents’ house.

Pump It (Louder)! • When Press is gearing up for a workout, she puts on her playlist called CP 2.0 which is mostly rap music.

Women’s League • One of Press’ most inspirational athletes is Serena Williams. “The way she plays is amazing,” gushes Press. “She’s so powerful [and] so beautiful.” Around the World • While Press doesn’t have the travel bug, she loved living in Madrid and Sweden. Tuscany, Italy is on her list of places to explore.

Awards and victories are natural indicators of success, but for Press, success comes from the quiet moments after failure. “It's like the people who fail the most are the best,” says Press. “It’s a crazy thing to think about and I think in other realms of the world, it’s hard to accept that. But in sports, it's 100 percent about getting back up.”

A

And picking herself off the ground is exactly what Press did. “I think each time that I handled it, each time that I had grace myself, each time that I said I'm not gonna let someone else determine my own self-worth, my own value, I got better and I became a better player,” expresses Press. “I became a more joyous player.” As a seven-year veteran on the USWNT, Press feels fully embraced and loved by the team. “I think that just as much as I enjoy the sport and being technically good and physically good, I think even more than that, I enjoy feeling trusted and respected by my teammates,” she says with a smile. “And a lot of that stuff happens off the field. It happens when there [are] no cameras around in the quiet moments... that's the most rewarding part, I think.” That love and support not only emanate from her teammates but from the fans as well. With half a million followers on Instagram, Press thinks it’s all surreal. She keeps a careful distance from social media but at the same time, she can connect with her fans by sharing parts of herself and her truth. At the games, Press still can’t believe that “people are going nuts” over her and her team. Other than earning trust and respect from her teammates, the most rewarding part about the job is bringing joy to people. “Joy is underrated,” Press shares. “I think we have so many American goals of what you need to do to be happy, but actually, happiness should be the goal. To be able to give people reasons to celebrate, to spend time with their family, to laugh and to yell and to embrace that human experience—I think that is super cool, and seeing it in the stadiums is one of the best parts.” As someone who speeds along the field, Press admits she has too much energy. Over the years she has learned to expend that abundant energy in healthier ways.

Meditating and walking with her bare feet on the field before a match keeps her grounded. Coming to terms with stillness is especially important. “I've learned, specifically as an athlete, I used to have more of a mentality of, the more I do, the better I am,” Press explains. “Now it’s the smarter I am, the better I am, so [that stems from] managing what I'm doing on the field and what I'm doing off the field… It's very much become a holistic, allencompassing job.” The countdown to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup leaves even less time for Press to do anything non-soccer related. “You're only on the field for two hours,” states Press. “You've got 22 hours and you have to manage that time perfectly so that when you're there for two hours, you’re the best that you can be.” In preparation for the World Cup, Press believes that embracing every moment leading up to the event will build a foundation and strengthen her determination rather than letting stress take over. “You have to be ready because my experience in the last World Cup was that crazy things happened,” explains Press. “It's never going to be the way you think it's going to be so you have to be emotionally, physically ready for everything. And that's a really hard thing to do, but I think we can do it. I have full belief in our team. I have full belief in myself.” Press’ fighting spirit along with her neverending determination to become better plants hope in her team and the rest of the country that will cheer them on. Despite all the national and international acclaim throughout her soccer career, Press wants to remind the younger generation that “it’s not about being famous or being successful and having the world tell you that you’re great.” Passion is what will drive you to your end goal. “I think it's about being great for yourself and deciding that you're perfect and beautiful and that you [can] make mistakes and that doesn't take away from that,” emphasizes Press. “In sports, it's such a great opportunity to learn those things and to stay focused on the process on playing… More important than being a professional athlete is doing whatever you're passionate about. That's what I would like the world to know. Just find your passion.”

Rodriguez completed education in fashion in Miami and began designing custom clothing for celebrities. The shift to shoemaking was a natural process that came about from the relationships he cultivated with industry leaders and factories over the years in New York. With his move to Los Angeles, he decided to turn his passion into a business and opened Shoemakers of Los Angeles.

Yes, the Shoe Fits

MIGUEL RODRIGUEZ CREDENTIALS: Footwear Developer, Designer and Manufacturer, Shoemakers of LA “I design with an uncompromising aesthetic that’s comfortable and [has an] effortless feel.”

He now helps clients nationally for their footwear development needs, focusing on domestic manufacturing and technology. Not only is he able to create and develop any design from concept to prototype with a domestic and international capacity, but he can also create dream shoes and make your shoe business dreams become a reality.

“Shoes are a mix of fashion and sculpture. They’re mysterious and intriguing, like art.”

“Right now, I am designing the next collection of Runway Heels, a convertible heel that transforms from a low wedge into a high heel with a push of a button. Its technology and design make this one of my favorite collaborations so far.”

“I develop designs from ideas to reality, manufacture unique handmade products and teach the art of shoemaking and new technologies to help create dream shoes to life.”

A Nice Finish • Rodriguez’s favorite materials to work with are Turkish leathers. “The craftsmanship of the finishes on the leathers is so unique,” he says. Creative Minds Think Alike • “[I get my inspiration from] other creative minds in the art world, engineering, textile trends and my dreams from time to time.” Shoed in • “I’m a bit of an introvert,” Rodriguez says with a smile. “But I love talking about shoes.”

Founder and Designer Analisa Jimenez of Marloe began designing leather items back in 2014 with the goal of creating the opposite of fast fashion. Believing that great design and craftsmanship shouldn’t come with a hefty price tag, she produces hand-prepped and handmade leather goods with attention to detail.

Simplicity Is Key

ANALISA JIMENEZ CREDENTIALS: Founder and Designer, Marloe

Each bag is thoughtfully designed and handmade in Marloe’s Bellflower studio and always produced in small batches in order to help reduce waste and to create unique items. A big effort goes into using the majority of each hide to reduce their carbon footprint. Whatever isn’t directly used goes into scrap bins that are then used for small leather goods and their interactive community workshops.

“Just like our products, the name Marloe is timeless and can be carried over though ever-changing styles and trends.”

“I’ve adopted the Danish philosophy of design, which is ‘Everything should have a purpose.’”

“Marloe doesn’t mean anything significant to me personally, but rather, it’s a strong yet soft name that effortlessly represents the tone of my brand. I went through many options but Marloe stood out to me and looked well graphically while being a name that’s easily memorable when introducing it to a new audience.”

[Enter Your Style Here] • “I think, especially in LA where I spend most of my time, I clearly see that California style has no single category. It’s simply a matter of having fun, and getting creative with your wardrobe choices and owning it.”

54 LOCALE MAGAZINE

It’s All in the Framework • “I get most of my inspiration from modern architecture. So many iconic modern architects have figured out how to combine simple functionality and iconic design all in one and that’s what I strive for.” Best of Both Worlds • “I split my time between LA and Long Beach. One thing I love about LA is that it’s constantly changing and evolving; there’s always something new to try. In my hometown of Long Beach, I love the quietness and the sense of community. It is currently on this evolution of foodie-meets-stylist wave—so many new restaurants to try and so many boutiques to shop at.”

Leathersmith Ray Lansburg started out with a graphic design degree but worked for many years with a master handbag maker/designer before embarking on creating his own brand, The Black Acre. His primary focus is creating men’s leather wallets in his studio—a fully renovated 1920s carriage house in his Fullerton backyard. From here, Lansburg crafts leather goods with a salt-of-the-earth sort of appeal—creating designs that have simple beauty yet are carefully constructed with meticulous detail in every stitch. And if you have been watching the new version of television hit, “MacGyver,” then you may have seen a couple of Lansburg’s goods: one of his belts was even crafted into a slingshot!

Hide and Seek

RAY LANSBURG CREDENTIALS: Designer and Founder, The Black Acre “My phantom wallet is a current favorite. It’s a long snap wallet with lots of cool subtle details inside.”

“My design philosophy is to always have a unique silhouette to every item and make goods that are fun to carry and use.”

“My main focus is men's wallets, particularly taking vintage styles, wallets you would have bought at a truck stop or swap meet, and reinventing them and decking them out with the best leather and hardware possible.”

School of Rock • Lansburg draws his style inspiration from rock and roll legends Lemmy Kilmister and Elvis Presley.

Back to Black • When asked what his favorite color is, Lansburg’s answer was simple: “Black! Come on!”

56 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Have Some Class • Lansburg’s favorite place to shop is Snake Oil Provisions in Long Beach, a shop known for its “working classic” vibes and specially-selected menswear offerings. Can’t Rush Art • “Dealing with demand is a challenge—making hand-stitched leather goods takes time.” Golden State of Mind • “California style means anything goes, really. I think the key is finding what ‘anything’ means for you.”

“I would say I get most of my inspiration from movies and music. A lot of it comes from just drawing until shapes work together, and good tunes facilitate that.”

Yokishop’s philosophy stems from the Japanese term “mottainai,” a direct translation for “using the whole fish.” But for Designer Jeff Yokoyama, a veteran of clothing design for 39 years, it’s a business model.

Renew and Repurpose

JEFF YOKOYAMA CREDENTIALS: Designer, Yokishop

He creates unique clothing from existing products and materials that have been discarded in the market. Each pattern is created and each garment hand-cut and sewn in their Newport Beach studio with an aim to provide jobs and create a smaller carbon footprint. Selling directly to the customer as well as to a selection of handpicked boutiques in LA, Hawaii and Tokyo, their ethos is not only doing the right thing but also being different in the process.

Back to Vintage • “I get my inspiration from old clothing. This is a huge passion of ours as well as a huge responsibility.”

“I buy defected military shirts and jackets, from camo to khaki to just army green, and we repurpose those [materials] by putting different things on them from our other company called Mucho Aloha.”

“[My favorite item is] the beach towel hoodie. From the used beach towel, it becomes part of the body. Then I go to the Goodwill where they’re discarding tons of sweatshirts and purchase them for $2 a pound. I’ll use the sleeves, the hood, the rib, the zippers—I tear them all apart and add them onto the beach towel hoodie.”

Photos By: Hunter Cole

Baked Goods • Over-production is not something that’s a part of Yokoyama’s practice. “We’re like a bakery,” he explains. “We make every day and then every day someone comes in and purchases something.”

YOKISHOP 2429 West Coast Hwy, Ste 102 Newport Beach, CA 92663 949.351.5389 www.yokishop.com

“Across [many college campuses] there are [at least three] Starbucks. So, from the uniforms that are being discarded, we take the logos and make reusable coffee sleeves [for that campus].”

Throw in the Towel • “All these hotels use towels like it’s nobody’s business,” Yokoyama explains. “We would love to collaborate with hotels and resorts across the country and make cool beach towel hoodies for them and their gift shops.” Less Is More • “We take things that are already here, already accumulated its carbon footprint, already had three or four gallons of water usage, and instead of throwing it away... we could all work together in repurposing product rather than buying more product.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 57

What started as a personal project to sew a case for her laptop has now transformed into a fullfledged business. Case has a Masters in Arts Education and worked as a high school teacher for a decade before she took a leap of faith and changed careers.

JULIE RAIS ELLIS CREDENTIALS: Designer and Owner, Rais Case

With no formal training in sewing and design, Case found ways to use her background in art to guide her through the process that has slowly evolved into a study of quality, design and fashion. A mother of two as well as a wife, artist, traveler and conscious creator, she is passionate about designing the highest quality products that cultivate community and culture around local, handmade goods.

Words have always had a way of helping Sarah Foster, Founder, Designer and Chief Foul Mouth of BAD BAD, overcome some of her struggles. It’s with a sense of unapologetic, foulmouthed appeal that she set out to create a jewelry brand that showed her “badass” attitude with simple explicit words and messages of encouragement.

Swearing Is Caring

SARAH FOSTER CREDENTIALS: Founder, Designer and Chief Foul Mouth, BAD BAD “My favorite design is the Desire bracelet, particularly the one that reads ‘JUST BE YOUR FUCKING SELF.’”

The uninhibited language used on her dainty jewelry presents empowerment to her and to her customers. Her jewelry is intended to be worn every day; she likes it to be reminder to persevere and be strong in whatever it is you’re going through in life—and all tinged with a tongue in cheek sense of humor that makes you proud to wear it.

“My very best work comes when I’m passionately frustrated about something whether it’s personal or something unjust in the world.”

“I want my designs to be worn by that single mom who needs something to remind her of her strength. I want my work to be loved by a group of girlfriends who all wear the same design to stay connected while they support their friend through a difficult time. I want the everyday woman who’s working towards her personal goals to wear my work to feel badass.”

Photos By: Kambria Fischer

Stay Gold • Much of Foster’s work comes in rose gold, silver and yellow gold, but Foster’s favorite is the latter: “[Yellow gold is] warm, reminds me of the sun, honey and youth.” Sun-Settling Down • “[My favorite place is] any rooftop at sunset with drink in hand.” BAD BAD San Diego, CA 619.880.0260 badbadjewelry.com

“Being the face of the brand and putting myself out there in a way that’s honest and real but not too much has been a struggle for me. But I keep pushing myself.”

From Trench to Treasure • “In the beginning, I designed for professional athletes and brands like Nasty Gal and BuzzFeed. I also did commission work for multiple New York Times bestselling authors. I’m in the metaphorical life trenches with my customers and friends, so it’s easier and more real to design for them.” A Personal Touch • “I design for myself first and foremost unless it’s a custom order, of course. When it comes to creating from nothing, my best work comes from tapping into what I want to read and wear. It’s a personal process for me. I design to overcome my own internal struggles and fears.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 59

When a lady in a parking lot wanted to buy the simple leather clutch that Lili Tanner had made for herself, she knew she was onto something. That became the catalyst for what has now grown into a business. She now creates leather handbags and jewelry in her studio (open by appointment only) in Twentynine Palms, a city located in the middle of the Mojave Desert.

Mojave Musing

LILI TANNER CREDENTIALS: Handbag and Jewelry Designer, Lili T. California “It all comes out of my personal desire or need.”

Originally a writer, author and columnist, Tanner grew up in Switzerland and worked in advertising for many years before she found her true calling. Whether she is designing bags from the softest buttery leathers or making jewelry with precious metals and stones, her premise is always to create something she’d enjoy wearing first.

“I must really love the design and love wearing it. I discovered that if I’m really true to that, other people will love it too.”

“Simplicity done in a playful yet substantial way is how I would describe the jewelry. For the bags, the basis is always utilitarian simplicity with, again, a playful element be it color or a detail.”

You may be surprised to learn that it takes Shoemaker Debra Hovel about 40 hours to make a pair of custom shoes. Her avant-garde style can be described as either Marie Antoinetteinspired, complete with bows, frills and embellishments, or veer to the other side of the scale with exotic skins and contemporary shapes that look like they’d be worn sometime in the future.

One Step Ahead

DEBRA HOVEL CREDENTIALS: Designer, Maker and Founder, Debra Hovel Footwear “I prize color, unique designs and comfort that make men and women want to stride. No mincing along for me. Strong powerful movement.”

Before embarking on her career, Hovel and her husband, Richard, had a design consultancy company, which meant she had always been involved in researching trends and colors. With shoes, she took that experience and turned it into something that she was able to create with her hands—but to be worn on the feet.

“My shoes are made to wear without socks— lots of color and happy combinations. Tan, happy feet in nice leather-lined shoes are my idea of great California style.”

“I love designs with references to the past but with something unique that will make people stop and ask me where I bought those shoes. I recently made several pairs for myself that illustrate this idea.”

She’s a Natural • “Nature puts all colors and patterns together and that amuses me to do the same with shoes.”

“Most of my clients end up being people who buy art. They seem to understand that my shoes are functional art.”

Step in Their Shoes • “Some models have worn my shoes, but I don’t court celebrities. I want to see strong, confident people, men and women, happy people, people who maybe have had pain in their feet, striding along, smiling. I love the idea that my clients tell the story of finding me, having custom handmade shoes made for them and they have a unique story to tell.” Play Matchmaker • “I want to design shoes that feature a collection of different lefts and rights to be worn together as you wish, depending on your mood and outfit. Spread the Love

Heart and Sohl

Meet Meshell “Mimi” Sohl. She is the Founder and Owner of Mimi et Cie, a French-inspired jewelry boutique comfortably nestled in the quaint and charming Pasadena Playhouse District. With decades of industry knowledge and a zest for life that’s rarely encountered, Sohl is redefining the luxury experience in the realm of high-end jewelry. From miniscule details to seeing the big picture, Sohl spends countless hours planning every inch of the shop to ensure that her clients receive the highest quality of care in their Mimi experience. You can bet that each sparkle is accompanied with a whole lot of love!

• Sohl is a born and raised Pasadena native. She is passionate about giving back to her community in various forms of charity work. “I spread the love in all the ways I can,” says Sohl.

“Love is in the details”–a motto Sohl lives by professionally and personally. At Mimi et Cie, you may find a few chic necklaces with rare Tahitian pearls or one 6.35-carat, pristine yellow diamond ring on display, but there’s no shortage on love. Despite being a partner with some of the most prestigious jewelry brands in the world– Mikimoto, Roberto Coin and Parmigiani Fleurier to name a few–jewelry isn’t the first thing you notice when entering Mimi et Cie. To your right, you’ll be greeted with a delectable assortment of seasonal candy in various, elongated vases waiting to be enjoyed. The boutique’s Parisianesque designs and walls colored in a custom blend of cool blue with notes of pastel, known as the “Mimi Blue," will immediately make you feel welcomed and relaxed. After years of perfecting her craft as a jeweler while climbing the ranks of management and working for a large established jewelry store, Sohl felt that it didn’t need to be grandeur to sell a half-a-million-dollar piece. “It needs to be something that everyone feels comfortable coming to. I want people to feel like they’ve come home at Mimi et Cie,” shares Sohl. “I want them to feel like they’ve entered a world that is not stressful, not cluttered. It’s just a calm and soothing experience.” The idea to redefine the true luxury experience dawned on Sohl when she was in Paris in 2002. She was

the feeling–the blissful feeling of adoration and appreciation that stirs in the lucky person who opens a gift personally handpicked with every detail catered to suit the receiver’s lifestyle and taste.

Mimi et Cie–Sohl’s vision to combine luxury and love–came to life on Nov. 1, 2010, and has become a safe haven for her clients, whom she calls her second family. Sohl’s clients, who are all referralbased, will come in throughout the year, not even to buy jewelry, but to hang out and wind down with their favorite drink.

“I had a client call me and say I’m not doing jewelry this year, but I need a cactus. I let them know I’ve got it covered,” explains Sohl. “If it’s not jewelry, I still want them to give her something that she’s gonna be thrilled about!” Sohl’s genuine passion to do what’s best for her clients is the reason why they trust Mimi et Cie to find a jewelry piece that captures the importance of all their crucial life milestones.

“We do a lot of business with men who are buying for their significant other, hence the alcohol,” explains Sohl. A two-story, rusted gold stand occupies the corner closest to Sohl’s office and is where her regulars will find their favorite drink: the Macallan 12, WhistlePig 10, Grey Goose Vodka and so on. In her office awaits a wet bar stocked with Perrier, Champagne and a secret stash of Coors Light (a preferred drink for one of her clients). “It’s an interesting thing what we do–we start with these clients and we watch them get married, have kids and sometimes, there’s tears in this office, sometimes there’s laughter in this office,” shares Sohl. “We pour our hearts and souls into every single interaction, and there weren’t lots during our humble beginnings, but every single one was handled with white gloves and filled with love.” For Sohl, it has never been about selling jewelry; money is never the motivation. It’s all about

But if the occasion calls for gifting jewelry, which is almost always the case, clients can rest assured that Mimi et Cie only partners with brands that adhere to the highest standards of quality. “I touch every single piece of jewelry that comes into this store before I buy it,” shares Sohl. During the inspection phase, she takes on the perspective of her clients and runs each piece of jewelry through a series of tests for design and aesthetics to material and packaging. “It’s the best job,” raves Sohl. “I love people. I think people for the most part are so good and so kind.” And love is the steady heartbeat of Sohl’s that brings joy into the homes of her clients and keeps them coming back again and again to visit Mimi et Cie. After all, love is in the details. “The littlest details,” adds Sohl. LOCALE MAGAZINE 71

Stephanie’s Mantra “I had to realize that there was nothing I had to fear—absolutely nothing. I’m taking the opportunity and I’m running with it. So, being fearless is my thing,” said Gentry.

Like most people who move to Los Angeles, Stephanie Gentry had envisioned big dreams for herself and was determined to follow them. In March of 2018, Gentry moved from her North Carolina home of 13 years to find herself homeless on the streets of Skid Row. “When you hear LA, most people immediately think of Hollywood, but when you come from a place like Skid Row, it really changes your whole idea of what LA is about,” said Gentry. We never expect the worst, but great organizations like Made By DWC are here to help women like Gentry find hope and regain their spark.

Gentry’s life in Los Angeles would have been different if it hadn’t been for Made By DWC. Made By DWC–operated by the Downtown Women’s Center (DWC)–is a social enterprise that aims to serve and empower women experiencing homelessness by providing job training skills and transitional employment in the realm of retail and product creation. For Gentry, DWC turned one of her life’s hardest moments into an opportunity that helped her discover her talents and allowed her to reinvent herself. “The intensity, the need that’s out there in Skid Row—it’s heartbreaking,” recalled Gentry. “And to actually be someone who had to experience that, I’m grateful that there were places like DWC that were available to keep my mind situated on believing that I can get past this.” The Downtown Women’s 82 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Center provided her with stable housing which allowed her to reflect and gain clarity with life; Made By DWC sparked her purpose and gave her a career to call her own. As a mother of two, Gentry devoted her entire life to caring for her children, who are now both grown adults. She has always seen herself as just a mother. “I had no idea that it was available for me to think of myself as more than that,” she said. In the past, Gentry worked a number of jobs but never considered it to be a career. “I only did it because I needed to do it at the time,” she admitted. Once she had transitioned out of the homeless shelter and into DWC, Gentry started looking at her talents and interests. Made By DWC has two locations: Resale Boutique and Café & Gift Boutique. Their main mission is to

Together We Can The Downtown Women’s Center gave Gentry hope, encouragement and a sense of community. “It’s a rarity to actually have a place where women are all gathered together,” explained Gentry. help women get to a point where they need to be, described Gentry. The organization inspires women to become even greater than they already are. This past December, Gentry was hired as a Retail Associate for the Resale Boutique. “I don’t know what I did right, but they hired me and that was exciting! Surprising, too,” she exclaimed with a chuckle. Anyone who is lucky enough to cross paths with Gentry will immediately know the reasons for her hire. With her natural ability to make people feel welcomed, her kindness radiates through her sweet smile and her desire to help others. In the midst of the chaotic hustle on South Los Angeles Street, you’ll find the Resale Boutique, a brick-colored building with a beautiful art mural— known as “Teaparty” by Ann Alexandra Wolken— that displays women from all backgrounds, working alongside one another on a long kitchen counter covered with various foods. Near the top left corner, the word “LOVE” is in bold and filled with maroon red with cadet blue polka dots. The Resale Boutique offers a collection of vintage, contemporary and brand-named clothing items, shoes, purses and accessories for women, along with a small selection for men. As a Retail Associate, Gentry always looks forward to making the shop look its best and loves changing up the mannequins to provide outfit inspirations for her customers. “I love being able to come in and make sure that everything looks as fresh as it did from the day before,” she said. The layout of the store is neatly decorated with a variety of clothing racks and sections of shoes and

accessories, all organized by styles—business attire, casual and streetwear, office outfits, semi-formal looks, party dresses and so on. The diverse fashion displayed at the Resale Boutique is the type of closet Gentry wants to have at her house. All items are donations that are resold at an affordable price. It provides women who may be financially struggling with an opportunity to purchase brand-named clothes—Adidas, Steve Madden, Michael Kors—to help them feel confident for any occasion. Whether it’s a power suit for the office or a cocktail dress for a party, Gentry loves helping her customers find the perfect outfit to help them get where they need to be. Recently, she helped a young lady find a blazer to wear for her job interview. Shortly after, Gentry gave the young lady a phone call to see how the interview went. “She got the job,” said Gentry with a grin. “I wanted to make sure she knows that we haven’t forgotten about her. Even though she came here for one objective, we still need to stand behind her and support her, not just the objective.” Gentry continued, “That’s what DWC has shown me. Even when you walk out those doors with what you need, they are still there to support you along the way. I had to return the favor.” She’s already returned the favor and will continue to do so. In the near future, Gentry’s goal is to get into entrepreneurship in hopes to spread awareness and fight together with DWC in the battle to end women’s homelessness. She added, “I want to help empower women to move forward in their journey.”

Jewel of the Sea

FALL IN LOVE AT FIRST BITE WITH CAL MARE’S PASTA-BAKED BRANZINO

WRITTEN BY: JENNIFER PELLERITO

It’s easy to imagine a gentle Mediterranean sea breeze wafting through the impossibly lofty ceilings and curved arches that define the mood at Cal Mare. The latest West Coastmeets-Amalfi Coast fusion restaurant from Chef Adam Sobel contains an immaculate indoor pergola adorned with luscious bougainvillea and twinkling string lights. Tufted, cozy half-moon booths and peacock-blue midcentury stools frame an all-white marbled bar, just enough eye candy to tempt you into sipping down an Aperol spritz—maybe even two.

I

FOOD • Cal Mare’s menu offers a vibrant taste of coastal Italian cuisine infused with Southern California influences.

It’s a scene that would be enough to satiate your senses, if only your stomach didn’t need filling, too. Hunger is a blessing in disguise at Cal Mare, especially with a dish such as Chef Sobel’s signature pasta-baked branzino on the menu. “I wanted to try a new way of preparing a whole fish that is elegant to present tableside. Instead of the usual predictable salt-crusted whole fish, I invented a way to use very salted pasta dough instead,” says Chef Sobel. The pasta noodle wrap is key to retaining moisture in the fish as it cooks, allowing the seasonings to work their magic. The fish walks a tightrope between too salty and not salty enough, a balancing act that Chef Sobel accomplishes without wavering. Seasoned with fennel flowers, oregano and extra-virgin olive oil straight from Corleone, Sicily, the fish is soft, delicate and simply falls apart, providing a buttery mouthfeel enjoyed in every bite. If you need a sauce, three options await—an intense smoked butter, eggplant caponata and an awakening salsa verde infused with basil, cilantro and avocado. Even the flour used to make the pasta that wraps the fish

DECOR • An outdoor patio gives way to the energy of street-side La Cienega Blvd, while indoor seating provides the trendy atmosphere of a modern Italian kitchen.

NOTHING FISHY ABOUT IT • The branzino is sourced from Dock to Dish, an international network of small-scale fishermen working to make local, low-impact and sustainable seafood more accessible.

PRICE • Guests can enjoy cocktails, spritz and wine by the glass starting at $12, and indulge in main courses starting at $19.

VERDICT

“I genuinely love to make people happy with delicious, soulful cooking. Being able to bring happiness to others through the craft is what fuels me,” says the chef. Handmade pasta and brick oven pizzas spice up the air with the vibrato of diners who come near and far, begging to be whisked away by Cal Mare’s dreamy Italian ambiance. Top off your meal when the after-dinner digestif cart rolls by, serving up a variety of limoncellos and liqueurs to help settle the six courses you’ve just consumed—like only a true Italian would, of course.

Local Mixologists Show off Their Takes on Seasonal Ingredients

WRITTEN BY: DEANNA NGUYEN PHOTOGRAPHED BY: CALLIE BIGGERSTAFF Every drink that you see at the bar is one made with creative flavors and diverse ingredients. • The subtle spiciness of the N’Awlins Jambalaya perfectly complements the kick from the peppers and light sautee to the shrimp. “It’s a traditional, unbelievable jambalaya,” said Goldblum. You won’t feel guilty digging into the colorful display of cajun flavor as this comfort dish warms the belly and the soul.

The vibe at Rock & Brews is that of a summertime backyard party with friends. American regional food meets classic rock in the dining room of the original location in El Segundo. You don’t have to be into rock music to love this place; the family-friendly restaurant is suitable for kids, pop queens and foodies alike. We chatted with Bill Goldblum, Senior Vice President of Rock & Brews, about some new Cajun and Asian-inspired dishes on the menu.

• The dish is inspired by a recipe from the late New Orleans, Creole and Cajun specialty chef, Paul Prudhomme.

• The devilishly spicy coating on these wings will leave your fingers red and your mouth on fire. The skin is crispy even under the thick layer of spices and the meat inside stays perfectly moist, exploding into your mouth as soon as you bite into it. “You definitely must love spicy food to enjoy these wings,” Bill Goldblum explained.

N AT I V E KNOWLEDGE

• Rock & Brews uses Top Chef alum Bruce Kalman’s very own bread and butter pickles from BK Brinery to top the dish. They’re easily some of the tastiest pickles around and are the perfect way to accent the dish and combat the heat from the wings.

N’Awlins Jambalaya Ingredients: • Chicken • Red and Green Bell Peppers • Onions • Shrimp • Clam Juice • Garlic • Andouille Sausage • Rice

EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK • All menu development comes from the El Segundo location, where you’ll often see dishes that you won’t find at other locations.

FRESH OFF THE REGION • Rock & Brews uses top-quality, locally-sourced, fresh ingredients across their American regionalinspired menu.

BEER UP, FRIEND • Rock & Brews focuses on local breweries that have anywhere between 48-66 beers on tap and 100 different bottles for beer lovers. They rotate flavors on a regular basis so you can always try something new.

Cafe Gratitude named this dish the “Whole Bowl” because “it contains all of the nutritional elements that one would need to get through the day.”

#Blessed • “I’m vegan, and it’s been an incredible palette for me to work on for the past 10 years,” shares Chef Ellis. “Now we have seven restaurants—yeah, I feel really blessed.” Appetizing Affirmations • When ordering your food at Cafe Gratitude, use “I am” statements such as “I am Radiant” or “I am Invigorated.” Love Where You Work • “We have an aspect of transformation within the work environment,” Chef Ellis says. “People come to work and they feel, ‘Oh, I can be myself here,’ and feel supported by the community we are working for.”

The bowl is a gorgeous mix of a variety of deliciously good-for-you flavors.

F

Foodies, rejoice! Cafe Gratitude is serving up a

staple menu item that carnivores, herbivores and

omnivores can all

agree on. The Whole Bowl is Cafe

Gratitude’s take on a macrobiotic bowl, which, according to Executive Chef Dreux Ellis, has been on the menu

“since day one.” “It’s been the numberone seller on our menu for 12 years!” Chef Ellis says. “It’s crazy popular.”

A macrobiotic bowl, otherwise known as a Buddha bowl, is a convenient and tasty way to enjoy a macrobiotic diet, which stems from the Buddhist principle of yin and yang balance. “Traditionally, a macrobiotic bowl has a grain, a legume, a pickled item and usually a root vegetable as well,” Chef Ellis explains. “And then a sea vegetable—in our case it’s sea palm. Then we brighten it up with our Tahini dressing.” The root vegetable gets switched out seasonally, typically with a butternut squash for winter and garnet yams for the summer. “We tried other things, but those seem to be the crowd favorites, so I usually keep that switch-out,” explains Chef Ellis. Cafe Gratitude named this dish the “Whole Bowl” because it “contains all of the nutritional elements that one would need to get through the day.” Full of protein, carbs and good fats, the Whole Bowl has “all the elements of a complete meal,” which Chef Ellis believes is the reason why people gravitate towards it so much. The bowl is a gorgeous mix of deliciously good-foryou flavors. When it first comes out of the scratch kitchen, you instantly smell the intoxicating, earthy aroma of the adzuki beans and a garlicky bite from their house-made tahini sauce. Once on the table, you’re greeted by an amazing collage of color. The rich greens of the sauteed kale and strands of tender sea palm are only accented by the bright, warm jewel tones of the kimchee and the butternut squash. Served with a choice of quinoa, brown rice or both, each bite of the Whole Bowl offers a new mix of flavors and textures. The smooth, creamy butternut squash mixed with the slight chew of the grains comes alive with the acidic tang of the kimchee. The rich and delectable tahini acts as

a binding agent for all the elements of the dish. Bright and herbaceous, the tahini absolutely blossoms when mixed with the flavors of the bowl, particularly with the beans, butternut squash and sea palm, which offers a lovely, reminiscent taste of the ocean. The Whole Bowl is topped with almonds and sprouts, which brings a fantastic crunch to the softer elements of the bowl. The Whole Bowl is an incredible representation of the food Cafe Gratitude serves. “I love food that is fresh enough to have been cooked in a home kitchen,” shares Chef Ellis. “We’re a scratch kitchen and we make everything on-site, but it’s not fancy food. It’s well-done, handmade food.” Whether you’re a die-hard vegan or you’re looking for a healthier meal, Cafe Gratitude has a beautiful, plant-based menu that could impress even the biggest of meat-eaters. But Chef Ellis, a vegan chef, encourages a plant-based lifestyle for a number of reasons. “Personally, the benefits of a plant-based diet are a compassionate lifestyle first of all, and the health benefits are very clear—the reduction of heart disease and other degenerative diseases—and often the unspoken benefit of a plant-based diet is that it’s so delicious,” he explains. “There’s this perception out there that it’s a limited way of eating and it’s actually a rich and vibrant lifestyle.” Not only is there dedication to creating delicious food, but there is also a clear commitment to their community. “I love the fact that we are creating food that supports a number of things. It supports regenerative agriculture, animal welfare and a general sense of giving back as opposed to taking away,” Chef Ellis says. “That’s always been our primary operational mission since the beginning and it still is today.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 101

Make Art ARTISTS SHELBY AND SANDY ARE TUGGING AT STRINGS OF NOSTALGIA

Artist Advice • “Don’t look at it as, where you’re at is taking away from your art because whatever you’re in, you can learn to apply it to art,” advised Sandy to aspiring artists.

WRITTEN BY: ANNIE KIM PHOTOGRAPHED BY: TRAVIS MCCOY

T “This is our favorite thing. Art is job, hobby, escape and passion.” –Shelby

When entering the LA-based art studio of Shelby and Sandy, your visual senses are immediately greeted with splatters of clean, vibrant colors and playful patterns carefully laced in an intimate dance between nostalgia and fun. In the span of five years, Shelby and Sandy have brought a new layer into the coveted realm of art by painting classic characters and everyday items with a minimalistic look, fully dressed in a loud pop of euphoric color. They want their art to evoke happiness and melancholy, the kind that takes you back to the simple summer days of chasing after your local ice cream truck with the rowdy neighborhood kids.

“Sandy and I like to paint happiness into our painting. We’re easily able to draw from memories,” said Shelby, the older of the two with a goatee highlighted in a tinge of ginger. Brainstorming the vision of an art idea may come naturally to the imaginative pair, but their process to create a piece from start to finish is far from easy. From the canvas to the acrylic paint colors, everything is handmade from scratch and crafted by Shelby and Sandy. “We wouldn’t do anything sloppy or half-assed. We always like to make everything we do perfect,” explained Sandy with a halfsmile, as his animated mustache grooved along to the movement of his baby-like facial features. “We have to do it Shelby-andSandy-style.”

“We always like to make everything we do perfect. We have to do it Shelbyand-Sandy-style.” –Sandy Best Friends 4 Ever • The four brothers, each about four years apart, are best friends. They have a group chat that they regularly update. “Our mom kind of spaced us out so that she can enjoy us all. Enjoy us, have another. Enjoy us, have another,” chuckled Sandy. Got It From Their Mama • Shelby and Sandy’s mother was the big artist in the family. While they were still in strollers, she would take the brothers with her to attend museum shows and exhibit galleries. 110 LOCALE MAGAZINE

The talented artist duo, born and raised in Irvine, California, hit the trifecta of important b-lettered nouns—Brothers, Best friends and Business partners. Ever since they could remember, Sandy and Shelby have been making art their entire lives. They credit their picture-perfect family—mom, dad and a band of four brothers—as the fuel for their desire to tug at the strings of nostalgia.

To Shelby and Sandy, everything in, on or connected with their art piece becomes their art. Over the years, they started to produce their own special acrylic paint solution. Now, with a myriad of 209 color options that all match the standards of their exact hue and vibrancy, they essentially created their own acrylic crayon box. “We make it all. We build everything. It all matters to us,” Sandy added. When asked if they have ever been in a creative funk or artistic block, Shelby laughed: “The answer is no. This is our favorite thing. Art is job, hobby, escape and passion.” From building furniture to designing digital art to becoming an art professor later down the road, they are striving to do it all. They have truly mastered the art of, well, art. “I don’t think we can finish all of our ideas in 10 lifetimes,” exclaimed Shelby. “This is Shelby and Sandy’s world. This is just the beginning. We’re just getting started.”

The restaurant has been a Coachella Valley staple for over 20 years, and its service has gone beyond taking down orders. Considered a true visionary, Hugh Kaptur played a significant part in the development of the architectural design for the Palm Springs community from the late 1950s through the 2000s. His designs are fluid and organic with features that add protection from the harsh elements of the intense desert heat. This first major exhibition of Kaptur’s work reveals his impact on midcentury architecture, and lectures and tours will complement this exhibition which includes Kaptur’s architectural models, photos, slides and other materials.
