The Little Pink Truck That Could How LENITA by GRITA Transcended its Floral Roots and Became a Vessel for Inspiring Connection and Cultivating Community

editor's note We began making this magazine a few months back when there wasn’t a question of uncertainty. A lot has changed since our pitch meeting where the editorial team excitedly presented ideas for our Shoppe Guide. The team is thrilled to see how the issue came together. It showcases truly incredible people in our community, from savvy entrepreneurs to passionate individuals sharing their love for their work. But now, more than ever, small businesses need our love and support. Everyone could use a helping hand and a little extra kindness. Within the pages of our Shoppe Guide (pg. 53), we’re shining the spotlight on shop owners, artisans who handcraft everything from candles to jewelry, creative ceramic pieces to liven up your space, cozy sleep essentials and a variety of other irresistible goods. If you need weekend plans, 2nd & PCH (pg. 102), LENITA by GRITA (pg. 114) and a

hunt for Yeastie Boys Bagels (pg. 88) are all definitely worth checking out. Looking to revamp your home? Raili Clasen (pg. 132) and our Design Duos Feature (pg. 121) will be sure to spark some major creativity. And if you’re searching for an inspirational story, read about Homeboy Industries, the largest gang rehabilitation center in the world (pg. 104). It’s been an unexpected couple of months, but I’m going into the rest of the year with optimism and a fresh perspective on life. So smile, not only because the sun is shining, but because you get to live and experience the beauty of California each and every day in a community of inspiring and creative individuals. Whether you’re reading this over your Sunday morning cup of coffee or your Monday night glass of cabernet sauvignon, thank you for taking a second out of your day to read our words and each other’s stories.

Yucca Valley

The day of Clive Standen’s photoshoot began with blue skies, brisk, 45-degree weather and a dirt road off the beaten path. Music filled the airstream at The Desert Yacht Club, as hair and makeup stylist Aiprll Patino and stylist Neil Cohen got Standen photo-ready for the day. The group, accompanied by Pippo the resident cat, walked out to the Stargazing Boat, parked on the peak of a hill, where Standen was ready to soak up the sun—and the spotlight. Leading Man “I am in the middle of Joshua Tree, shooting in the beautiful surroundings, and I’ve got Mumford & Sons playing in the background with some lovely people and great clothes,” said Standen. “This is pretty much the perfect day!” An Idyllic Setting The Desert Yacht Club was an incredible location for the photoshoot, not only for its plethora of backdrops and helpful staff, but for its natural surroundings as well. “I love how surreal this location is,” Patino said. “It’s gorgeous— the clouds, the sky, the landscape—it’s beautiful, it’s bizarre, it’s amazing.” Nothing But Blue Skies “Clive was so kind to everyone and eager to try different looks, locations and poses,” LOCALE’s production coordinator, Lauren Lewellen, said. “When the production team arrived the night before, it was pretty windy, but we woke up to blue skies. It’s been a perfect day with the perfect team and the perfect subject.” Desert Daydream “Anytime you’re shooting out near Joshua Tree or Yucca Valley, I’ve always felt that it was a dreamland,” photographer Tae Kwon said as he was setting up between shoot locations. “You can just do whatever.” And with a subject like Standen, who was eager to climb around and experiment, the results were nothing short of incredible.

On the surface, Clive Standen is what you’d picture as the definition of manliness. He’s played warriors, is an athletic champion and does his own stunts. Get to know him a little better and you’ll find that beyond the biceps and the beard is a caring father of three, an ambassador for marine life and someone who loves singing along to Mumford & Sons. In other words, Standen represents less of what it means to be a “man’s man” and more of what it means to be a man of the modern age.

Already very active with Muay Thai boxing and professional stunt training, Standen’s acting career began in his teens, which was around the time his mother had decided to go back to school so she could teach drama therapy to children with Down Syndrome. “I was 16 and very impressionable...and I really looked up to my mum and all the [21-year-old drama students] she was working with,” he says before cracking a smile. “At the same time, there was also a girl I really liked...and that’s where it started.”

A

With the support of a mother and teachers who believed in him, Standen decided to take the idea of acting professionally more seriously. “I’ve always been that person where you give me an incentive and I suddenly get tunnel vision, and I ride toward that goal,” he explains. From there, he decided to take classes to further his education on the subject but was disappointed by the amount of armchair knowledge the courses required. “I couldn’t just do theater, which was frustrating to me at the age of 16. I was like, ‘Why isn’t there a course that is practical to being an actor?’” Standen recalls. “A lot of the courses were all theory...and I had already read all the books that were on the syllabus. So I did a year of theater studies and [then] dropped out—I didn’t want to be a historian, I wanted to be an actor.” Standen found his place in performing arts courses, which not only allowed him to practice his craft, but it also let him explore the more physical side to performing, and this is where he was able to tie in his knack for athletic training. “It all came in handy for the stunts I do now!” he says. “I’m a little insane and crazy and a bit of a lunatic when it comes to stunts.” Needless to say, the combination of his acting and physical training fared well for him in his career. Best known for his role as Rollo in “Vikings” and Bryan Mills in the “Taken” TV series, Standen’s acting career has taken him around the world, through ancient and modern times alike. When he wasn’t sword fighting in Camelot or throwing axes in Kattegat, he was pulling off a heist in Rhode Island or getting hit by a car (then stealing said car). “It’s simply not true that you just walk into jobs,” Standen explains. “Usually you get cast for what your strength is. I’m a very physical actor; I have a very physical presence, and I got into acting to play numerous different characters—and characters that were far removed from myself.” “I don’t actually like playing onto type,” he continues. “But usually, that one audition you get right at the beginning of your career is the one where people go, ‘I can just see him playing that role!’ I think I was thrown into the historical epics, the dramas that are more physical, and now I can branch out.” His roles have all been very different characters to play, but there is something Standen loves about each of them: they are flawed. “I don’t think anyone’s perfect,” he says. “There’s something I hold on to and think about quite a lot: in Chuck Palahniuk’s ‘Fight Club’ (the book), the first time the main character sees Tyler Durden is on the beach, and he’s getting driftwood and shoving it in the sand…” The passage Standen’s referring to continues: “What Tyler had created was the shadow of a giant hand. Only now the fingers were Nosferatu-long and the thumb was too short, but he said how at exactly four-thirty the hand was perfect. The giant shadow hand was perfect for one minute, and for one perfect minute Tyler had sat in the palm of a perfection he’d created himself.” (Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club). “The point of that scene in the book is all you can expect from perfection is a moment, and if you look for anything more, you’re going to be disappointed,” Standen explains, “and I think human beings are the same. You can have many moments of perfection in any one day, but you have to look for them and appreciate them.”

Extracurricular Activities When he’s not working, Standen is an acting ambassador for Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

He’s Got the Beat “I did a lot of contemporary dance training,” Standen shares, “and I think it actually helps with the choreography of fighting and the sword play—you pick up the moves and your movement ability is so much better.”

Parental Guidance “We have this little game around the dinner table now where I go, ‘Say one good thing about your day and one bad thing about your day,’” says Standen, “and none of the other kids or anyone around are allowed to question that bad thing… It’s about being readily available to communicate your feelings with the people you love.”

Location, Location, Location Some of Standen’s favorite filming locations have been in the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland and Tybee Island in Georgia.

Nice Handiwork Standen is a former international Muay Thai boxer, a fencing gold medalist and is ambidextrous with a sword.

Standen never shies away from his characters’ flaws. Instead, he embraces them, letting those imperfections add texture and humanity to the roles. Aside from being flawed, the roles throughout his career have all tended to be rough around the edges. Whether he’s played the honorable knight, the battlehungry viking or the vengeful ex-CIA operative, they can categorically be called men of violence. However, Standen’s most recent role of Anthony Lavelle in “Council of Dads” is a change of pace.

S

“There seems to be a big thing about toxic masculinity,” Standen says. “There’s nothing wrong with a man who cries and expresses emotion. And I wanted Anthony to be a hugger, a kisser. He’d hold his heart on his sleeve: when he’s angry, he’s angry; when he’s emotional, he’s emotional, you know?” Over the past few years, the term “toxic masculinity” has become an undeniable buzzword. The term not only challenges how our society sees men, but how our society shapes these men as well. It’s an idea that’s been around since the ‘80s, and it’s just now catching on in the mainstream. While the current rhetoric may seem like it’s mostly focused on calling out men for being

predatory or too aggressive, the term was originally created to question why our society raises our boys to feel shame for emotional expression, to utilize violence as an indicator of power and to be overtly self-reliant, among other points. While his warrior-type roles haven’t necessarily been poster boys for today’s idea of healthy masculinity (presumably due to the time periods the stories are based in), Standen has attempted to bring a more relevant portrayal of modern masculinity to his present-day characters. But not everyone has been on board with it. “I did have some time on ‘Taken’ [during] a very emotional scene...the scene felt very much like the scene in Se7en with Brad Pitt yelling, ‘What’s in the box? What’s in the box?’” Standen shares. “And I played the scene really emotionally—I had tears in my eyes— and the director came up to me and went, ‘Can we do another take? But can you stop the tears, because tough guys don’t cry.’” Despite this note, Standen felt strongly about this scene and continued to deliver an emotional performance, but by the time production was finished, each one of Standen’s tears had been edited out.

In a stark contrast, Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, the producers of “Council of Dads,” were seeking the opposite from their actors. “One of the reasons I signed on [to ‘Council of Dads’] was Tony Phelan saying, ‘Let’s just stamp out this toxic masculinity,’” Standen says. “And I told him that story, and he said, ‘Well, you’re not going to get that from me.’”

I

The NBC show, which aired this past March, follows the Perrys, a family that has just lost father and husband Scott Perry to cancer. In his remaining months, Scott had created a Council of Dads to help take care of his five children after he’s gone— from driving lessons to words of wisdom. “It’s been really great to play a character that’s emotionally ready,” says Standen. “There’s a lot of violence and gratuity in the world right now... and ‘Council of Dads’ has a really positive message, and it’s full of joy...and optimism about moving on, and finding humor through grief, and it’s about who shows up. It really mirrors the modern family today, I think.” Aside from its relevance, one reason Standen believes the show will resonate well with its audience is because he has seen the parallels between the story and his own reallife experiences firsthand. “‘Council of Dads’ works on so many levels, but what’s interesting to me, especially with my character, is the role of a father in our society,” Standen explains. “My dad left when I was eight years old, and I haven’t seen him since. I had an amazing man who stepped in and took over that role, and I don’t like calling my stepdad my stepfather—he’s my dad. Anyone can be a father, but it takes a strong man to be a dad.” “‘Council of Dads’ is about a man who dies of cancer...but it doesn’t have to be about death; there are lots of families out there where dads just walk out, they leave or they’re away on business for very long periods of time,” Standen continues. “So on one hand, it’s about the role of single moms and how hard they work, but it’s also about how important the role of a father figure is.” On-screen, Anthony Lavelle is a man without a family, whose superpower would be “the ability to talk to children on their level.” Standen describes his character as the “cool uncle” that kids can trust and talk to, but he’s still able to fill in as the strong male role model. “But what’s interesting is that he’s never had anyone love him,” Standen shares, “and he needs this family as much as they need him.” Another way that Anthony paralleled reality is that Standen plays the best friend of a man battling cancer, a role he has played in real life. “My best friend—best man at my wedding, best friend I have in my whole life—was diagnosed with cancer, and he was very, very ill,” Standen says. When he originally met with Rater and Phelan, who wanted him for the part of Anthony, Standen pitched himself to play the role of Scott Perry, who dies in the first episode. “I start crying in my interview with them, going ‘I’m not sure I can play this role because my best friend is dying of cancer, and I don’t want to be the guy on TV playing the best friend.’ And they said, ‘Well, maybe this is why you need to play this character.’” This is a man who has fallen backwards off a three-story-high wall (on purpose), but the role of Anthony daunted him on a much deeper level. “Most of the roles I’ve played in my career have been far removed from me,” he explains. “It’s very hard for me to go, ‘This is me. I’m playing myself.’” But Standen remembered advice he had received in drama class: if you’re scared of a role, you should play it. Fortunately, Standen’s friend is now in remission. “He’s a lot better now,” he says, “but it was terrifying at the time.” Standen’s hope for ‘Council of Dads’ is that it sparks real-time conversations within families and creates a platform where difficult, but important subjects can be broached. He believes that an open line of communication is key—not only to strong, inclusive families, but to raising the next generation as well. “It’s about communicating. There’s a lot of anxiety and depression and things that people are ashamed to talk about, and I think it’s important to vent by talking,” Standen notes. “And again [it comes back] to who shows up...about loving yourself and living in the moment,” he says with a grin. “All you can expect from perfection is a moment—so live that moment!” LOCALE MAGAZINE 47

“I love the design process. Placing and replacing different designs until I’m happy with the final pattern takes hours and is so much fun. My absolute favorite part, though, is adding finish to the final product and seeing all of the grain come to life beneath the different finishes. My Patriarchy Portrait illustration and my Sunburst Mosaic are my favorites—I never tire of looking at them.”

“For us, making things provides a break from our hectic world. It’s an opportunity to unplug and truly enjoy the process— not just the end result. That’s what we’re really into; it’s not just going through the motions of making something, it’s experiencing each step of the process, both as an effort to improve your skills and to just zone out.”

WHIMSY + ROW 12801 Venice Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90066 424.500.2405 www.whimsyandrow.com

Founder Rachel Temko studied sustainable fashion while in school, and after seeing the limited options available, she decided to create her own brand. “Our story began with vintage and supporting other brands,” Temko explains. “When we transitioned into creating our own ecoconscious collections, we took a pledge that every decision we made would be the most sustainable option.” Being that the fashion industry is the thirdlargest polluter in the world, all items at Whimsy + Row undergo a strict regimen for sustainability.

WRITTEN BY: ALLIE LEBOS PHOTOGRAPHED BY: CHARLIE CHIPMAN

“Made in limited-run batches in Los Angeles, our clothing is handmade

under ethical conditions, using the most sustainable materials,” states Temko. “We produce everything locally, use low-impact dyes, zero water printing, recycled water, upcycled fabrics and fabrics made with natural fibers like linen, Tencel, certified organic cotton and cupro.” Through the efforts made at Whimsy + Row, nearly two million hours of light bulb energy have been saved, along with almost 500 pounds of waste. “Without sacrificing style, fit and quality, we are an attainable and approachable eco-conscious brand. We’ve got the best of both worlds,” says Temko. While Whimsy + Row has plenty of options when it comes to giving your wardrobe a stylish yet conscious upgrade, Temko’s favorites are their Flora Pants, Jordan Jacket, Maya Top, Linen Valentina Sets and Lola Dress.

1. “During spring and summer, we offer Boy Smells, which are amazing candles that have been flying off the shelves.” 2. “Saint Luis is a brand we carry in Recess. The one that stands out the most to me is Jacques Marie Mage. JMM has a cult following with specific frames selling out before they even hit the floor.” 5. “Assouline has done a great job bringing an assortment of coffee table books that range from a watch collector’s dream to the history of the cigar.” 6. “Proenza Schouler, a staple for most women, released the new collection of their White Label with us. [Lost & Found] is a Bohemian-inspired time machine that transports you back to an era when quality eclipsed quantity.

Jamie Rosenthal Founder, Lost & Found

When Jamie Rosenthal opened her first Lost & Found location 20 years ago, she wanted to give Los Angeles a taste of what the world has to offer. “My father was a shoe designer and manufactured in Italy and around the world in the ‘60s and ‘70s,” says Rosenthal. “My aesthetic is influenced by this period in design and fashion, and where it

intersects with the intellectual and social ideals of this time.” Rosenthal prioritizes craftsmanship and offers a rotating inventory of European fabrics, art and furniture. She is thoughtful in her shop selections and hopes that her pieces “invoke a sense of curiosity and a human connection that does not exist with many mass-produced products and chain stores.” Lost & Found has now expanded to three locations. Like the treasures that take sanctuary inside their walls, these concept stores continue to stand the test of time and gently remind us that beauty doesn’t always fade. Rosenthal continues to remain curious and in motion, always on the hunt for hidden gems across the globe. WRITTEN BY: NICOLE JEFFRIES PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: LOST & FOUND

ban.do Provides Products with Purpose

> What would life be without fun prints and patterns? Thanks to popular lifestyle brand ban.do, we may never have to know. Back in 2008, Jen Gotch, founder of ban.do, started her own business by handsewing one-of-a-kind hair accessories that featured vintage gems and trims from various thrift stores and flea markets. According to ban.do’s Senior Creative Director Ali LaBelle, “Things sure have changed over the last 12 years! Since the start of ban.do, we’ve evolved into a lifestyle brand and make a whole lot of products, including stationery, apparel, drinkware and bags.” While ban.do strives to inspire their customers with state-ofthe-art products, LaBelle says, “Our product design team draws inspiration

from so many places, but ultimately, we are inspired by our customers...We make and sell things we genuinely use and love.” Being that they curate an array of products and items, intention remains the focus behind anything crafted and sold at ban. do. “What sets us apart is that with everything we do—from designing and customer service to the brands we choose to partner with—we do with intention. We want to give our customers the tools to be their best...the idea is that we’re bringing joy and optimism into their day,” explains LaBelle. While ban.do promotes an impressive selection of lifestyle products, some customer favorites include ban.do’s yearly planners, notepads, intentionsetting necklaces and graphic tees.

“WHEN YOU EAT THE WHOLE THING, YOU DON’T FEEL THE GUILT AFTERWARDS LIKE YOU WOULD IF YOU PUT DOWN A 16-OUNCE NEW YORK STRIP.”

HE’S A PRO Chef Salvatierra went to culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu. He spent over four years at the neighboring J Nichols Kitchen in Marina del Rey before coming to Stark’s. SPOT STARK’S Find Stark’s in the parking lot that also includes Pure Barre and Pavilions Grocery Store, right on the corner of Mindanao Way and CA-90.

W

When it comes to eating out, sometimes you want a scene, and sometimes you want something that feels like home. Meet Stark’s, a home to those who desire both.

All the stars align at first sight. Amid other restaurant-goers, you’ll find a match at first taste at Stark’s. A highlight of the menu is the roasted vegetable salad, an entree (or even a starter to share) that will leave you satiated in both mind and body. “I just love the pureness of the ingredients,” says Chef Alfie Salvatierra. “They’re not manipulated in any way; they’re just speaking for themselves.”

—CHEF ALFIE SALVATIERRA

The salad combines the earthy flavors of roasted cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes and Brussels sprouts with a roasted red pepper and cashew romesco. Drizzle with a pomegranate vinaigrette and you’ve got yourself a salad that smells and looks as beautiful as it tastes. In keeping with Stark’s laid-back California coastal approach, the roasted vegetable salad brightens the day much like a warm ocean breeze. Seasonal, exploratory textures radiate with rich vegetable flavors, heightening the intensity of the dining experience. Vegetarians and meat-eaters alike can enjoy a dish that delivers on its promise to be hearty, flavorful and filling. “[First,] you have the crispness of the vegetable,” says Chef Salvatierra. “Once you get into the cashews, then you’ve got a different texture and a different layer. It’s that nuttyness, the roast from the red bell peppers, and then the olive oil that just finishes and gives it a nice sheen and flavor.” Sure, all the ingredients look pretty on a plate, but there’s a lot more than that. There’s depth, dimension and density all tossed together, particularly in the way the greens accent the colors present in the bold red pepper and—an even more daring—purple cauliflower. Combined, the salad becomes an intellectual powerplay; a tried and true delight. While the roasted vegetable salad is considered to be on the lighter side, it still delivers a muchneeded sense of fullness. Unlike other salads, this one isn’t only for cutting calories—it delivers on flavor too. “When you eat the whole thing, you don’t feel the guilt afterwards like you would if you put down a 16-ounce New York strip,” Chef

Salvatierra says. Yet, thankfully, you still feel full. Why does “healthy” always have to equal “starving” or “unsatisfying?” Wait a minute… it most definitely doesn’t have to be that way! In fact, at Stark’s, “healthy” is synonymous with mindblowing, give-me-more goodness. Naturally, most would say that a dish this good comes together through collaboration. It’s especially true in this case, explains Chef Salvatierra. “I’m very fortunate to have a great team on my hands,” he says. “This really does define teamwork at its finest. From front to back, they really work cohesively.” Just as intriguing as the food is the seductive interior at Stark’s. Dim lighting provided by bronze table lamps and hanging pendants give the space an alluring glean. As a refresh of the old Jerry’s Deli location, Stark’s stands out as a home away from home, glowing with warm wood tones that fill the space with an undeniable atmosphere that can only be witnessed to be truly known. “For me, as a chef, I just have one goal: I want my guests to walk in from beginning to end and say, ‘Wow, that was a good meal,’” says Chef Salvatierra. Much like a whisper, the buzzing scene at Stark’s is felt best within close distance. Stop by to fill up all your senses in a place that spins with modern charm and comfort. In a world of its own, Stark’s feels much like a dream that seems almost too good to be true. Until, yet again, you wake up and realize reality may be an even better version of the dream you first imagined. “Food should inspire a memory,” says Chef Salvatierra. “All we’re trying to do is give people a new memory.”

The Game Over Ingredients: • Scrambled Egg • Bacon • Tomato • Cheddar Jalapeño Schmear • Cheddar Bagel

F I R ST B O R N FAVO R I T E THE GAME OV E R

• This hedonistic heavyweight combines the bagel and breakfast sandwich with stunningly satisfying results, pairing a luscious cheddar bagel with fluffy scrambled eggs, crisp bacon, fresh tomato and a thick “schmear” of zesty jalapeño cream cheese. “Game over, for me, exemplifies what we are,” reminisces Fox. “My goal was to create...an egg and cheese flavor bomb on a bagel.” YEASTIE BOYS BAGELS 1.855.569.2699 yeastieboysbagels.com @yeastieboysbagels Photoshoot Location: ALFRED COFFEE MELROSE PLACE 8428 Melrose Pl Los Angeles, CA 90069 88 LOCALE MAGAZINE

• The Game Over is the very first sandwich that Fox ever made when he was putting together the Yeastie Boys concept. No wonder it holds such sentimental value!

O

One menu item that isn’t on LA’s list of hometown favorites is the good ol’ fashioned bagel. This absence was noted by Evan Fox, who turned his irritation into inspiration when he cofounded the now beloved Yeastie Boys bagel truck in 2014. “I lived in New York for a while and being Jewish… I was really surprised because there weren’t that many bagel options [when I got here]. I wanted to put a spin on the type of food I grew up eating,” says Fox.

The Lox Deluxe Ingredients: • Smoked Salmon • Scallion Schmear • Tomato • Red Onion • Capers • Sesame Bagel

Five years later, one truck has turned into three, and Yeastie Boys has become a ubiquitous force in the LA street-food scene. But, according to Fox, the root of this success can be traced back to two iconic sandwiches.

DRIVIN’ AROUND TOWN

T H E LOX D E LU X E

• Though Yeastie Boys is all about experimentation, this sandwich hews closer to old-school deli tradition with its time-tested blend of smoked salmon, scallion cream cheese, tomato, red onions and capers, all mounded atop a sesame bagel. “It’s got to be a staple,” remarks Fox. “The lox is something versatile and classic. It’s Yeastie 101.”

2

A NEW WEIGHT CLASS

• Fox used the Lox Deluxe as a test subject for an experiment known as “The Heavy,” which involves the inclusion of a crisp, fried hash brown in the middle of the sandwich. Patrons loved the idea, and, today, one can order any sandwich on the menu “Heavy” style.

• Fox says he loves the “guerilla-style” quality of the food truck game and lists Kogi BBQ and Leo’s Tacos among his favorites. Nonetheless, he likes to think of Yeastie Boys as less of a food truck and more of “a street food experience...its own thing.”

BETTER BE HUNGRY • Another favorite at the truck is the signature Reuben sandwich. This beast is piled high with an exclusive brand of pastrami, which hails from Ugly Drum––an independent meat outlet founded by Erik Black, who works as an accountant by day. “If you want the craziest pastrami you can find, this is it,” muses Fox. “I buy 30 pastramis at a time like a drug dealer.”

BAGELS FOREVER • Fox’s ultimate aspiration for Yeastie Boys is not to turn the brand into a traditional bagel shop, but to open a drive-through one day. For now, though, he’s launching a latenight munchies menu consisting solely of pizza bagels! LOCALE MAGAZINE 89

Words of Wisdom •“If you don’t transform your pain, you’re just going to keep transmitting it,” states Father Greg. “The opposite of that is a cherished person will find their way to the joy of cherishing. So that’s kind of the principle of this place.”

FATHER GREGORY BOYLE

The largest gang intervention, rehab and re-entry program in the world, Homeboy Industries is a place for hope. Each year, Homeboy Industries helps 9,000 people transform their lives. Offering a variety of social enterprises, programs and services, men and women are given the opportunity to change their lives—a second chance.

T

The mission at Homeboy Industries, housed in a building situated on N Alameda and Bruno in Downtown Los Angeles, is “to provide hope, training and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women, allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community.” Started by Father Gregory Boyle in 1988, the nonprofit organization has expanded and grown over the years. “We started with a school, then we added a jobs program, then we added little businesses––I guess you would say. And then the bakery was the first social enterprise. Then, tattoo removal,” Father Greg accounts. “We added all of those aspects, but the main thing is that it’s about a community of tenderness.” The doors are open for all at Homeboy Industries, and nobody is forced to be there. It’s a decision an individual must make for themself. “It won’t work otherwise,” explains Father Greg, “So, having said that, people relapse all of the time. People start to look at their trauma, and then they end up getting high or something—they color outside the lines or they return to the gang life. But they receive a dose of what this life is. In the old days, we used to say, ‘Well, maybe they’ll come back.’ Nobody says that anymore; we all say, ‘They’ll be 106 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Future Plans • What’s next for Homeboy Industries? “I think we’re always interested in residential. That will be something down the line. Because 60% of gang members are homeless, we’d love to rectify that and help with that situation,” Father Greg explains. A Powerful Read • Father Greg’s book, “Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion,” accounts his compassionate stories and experiences from the gang capital of the world.

“You don’t go to the margins to make a difference; you go to the margins so that guy will make you different. You don’t go there to reach them; you go there to be reached.” —FATHER GREGORY BOYLE

back.’ Because they always come back— absolute and total guarantee. In fact, everyone that runs this place are people who came back. Once you have a taste of this, it’s compelling.” Two-thirds of the senior staff at Homeboy Industries are graduates of the 18-month re-entry program, which is offered to over 400 women and men every year. The employee count stands at 176, and there are 125 professional volunteers. The dedication, understanding and support from Father Greg and those who are involved in and a part of Homeboy Industries is riveting and inspiring. He believes that gang violence is a community health issue. Systematic decisions are made without understanding the reason for the problem. “The outsider view drives the inside of our policy and the inside of how we see things. That’s part of the issue; we make these decisions from the outside looking in. ‘Why would a kid join a gang?’ ‘Oh, I know, he thinks gang life is exciting.’ Well no, absolutely no. And yet that’s the outsider view trying to rationally come to some conclusion. That’s the kind of thing that drives how we respond in terms of policy and such, which is a problem. You want people to have more reverence for how complex their lives are, and then have more humility as they come here and listen,” explains Father Greg. Father Greg sits in his office, located at the forefront of Homeboy Industries, where he can look out and see all who is there. It’s an office completely covered in photos–– with the Pope, with Barack Obama, with lives that he’s transformed and lives that have transformed him (and a sign that reads, “Chillin with my homies”)—and an office where he speaks with these people about their lives and futures. Individuals are cooking meals next door in the kitchen at Homegirl Cafe, serving tables, cleaning the building, working at the shop selling Homeboy merch, giving tours and sitting in the main room waiting to speak with Father Greg. “You don’t go to the margins to make a difference; you go to the margins so that guy will make you different. You don’t go there to reach them; you go there to be reached,” says Father Greg. “And by allowing yourself to be reached and allowing yourself to receive who he is, then everybody sort of inhabits their mutual dignity, and that’s the dynamic. So that’s what you hope for.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 107

Candice King and Kayla Ewell are just your average 30-somethings—and by average, we mean starred on a hit CW series called “The Vampire Diaries” and have amassed over 7 million combined followers on Instagram. But you would never know that when listening to their hugely popular podcast, Directionally Challenged. The vibe they have created with their two-season series is akin to a chat with a best friend over a glass of wine. It’s coffee talk meets spilling the tea, tackling everything from surface level to below the skin topics, sparking a sliding scale of dialogue that ranges from lighthearted to intellectual.

“Sometimes you just bond with someone, and you go through parallel experiences in life, and we found ourselves going through life changes together,” says King. The two describe how our society of contrived social media posts and snapshots of glimpses into a person’s curated life have created a false narrative, especially for two career-driven women going through the throes of love, marriage and the baby in the baby carriage in the world of entertainment. So they wanted to add a dose of reality to an industry that tends to lack authenticity. Enter: the podcast. Podcasts are the ultimate vehicle to relay information to an audience these days. They don’t play by any rules––you can listen whenever; you can pause, play, rewind. It’s a no strings attached relationship. This is perhaps why there has been such a surge in their popularity. “Podcasts can fit your schedule; you don’t have to change your schedule for it. When you need to escape or need a little bit of wisdom or uplifting, just to have that resource and be able to put your earbuds in––it’s a little bit like a friend,” explains Ewell. Crossing over into their 30s provided perspective and an understanding of different walks of life, but this mature mindset came at the price of the blind confidence that infiltrates the 20-something stage. Directionally Challenged is the answer to the ever-present question, “What now?” This podcast aims to

address everything you think you should know by now but without the ego of pretending to already know it. King’s thought of “If we feel this way, there has to be others that feel this way too” is the cornerstone of every conversation they have. “What’s been really beautiful is we’ve been able to engage with our audience,” says Ewell. King coattails with this description: “It’s incredible what you can do when you’re not listening to the reasons why you shouldn’t do something. It’s just noise, and we do live in a really noisy time. Sometimes, you just have to jump in. The worst that can happen is you learn a big lesson and maybe you fail, but failures are often the most important thing to lead you to something great in life.” When it comes to picking the right people to bring on their podcast, Ewell and King have had to adopt a somewhat self-serving mentality to best benefit their listeners. “We found ourselves initially feeling like we had to get certain guests, but then we realized that that’s not what we’re interested in. We wanted to find and figure out things in life that we felt lost in, so we bring guests on that interest us that we find in our local community or are making a difference on a broader spectrum. That’s what makes our hearts sing.” It does take a village, though, as Ewell and King admit that they rely on an amazing team of producers, editors and collaborators to get the job done. But what started off as just a “let’s see how this goes” endeavor has bloomed into a catalyst for change with a cult following. Sure, they started this for themselves, but close to 3,000 five-star reviews prove that this passion project is one hell of a pursuit.

As for the future of this podcast, well, that just depends on what new life questions arise for the duo, but you can surely expect more honesty, less filters and the same amount of sass.

Creative Collaboration For This Husband and Wife Duo, It’s What’s on the Inside That Counts

Newport Beach

“I love our location. It’s so fun to get to know the whole design community out there!” —Maria Isles

Names: Maria and Max Isles Job Titles: Owner/Designer and Woodworker/Furniture Maker, Isles Interiors

E

Ever since she was little, Maria Isles wanted nothing more than to be an interior designer and to own her own shop. And while life initially took her off-course from that dream, by the time her son was old enough, she went back to interior design school. That was eight years ago. Since then, Maria finished school, and she and Max found a space to turn Maria’s business goals into reality. “We found this little space on old Newport

We revamped the whole store; now I do my interior design out of here. We have our style, so customers and other designers can shop our look, and we have a lot of Max’s pieces in here, so they can get an idea of what they can [have] made by him.” It’s easy to see why a marriage between an interior designer and a furniture

maker seems almost too good to be true. “When I started interior designing, I found that a lot of our clients needed one-of-a-kind pieces or custom furniture,” Maria explains. “[Max] can make anything—I was so lucky. I’d ask, ‘Can you make a coffee table in a week?’ And he’d be able to whip it up! He’s so talented—it was the perfect combination for us to start a business like that.” Isles Interiors is not only a culmination of the couple’s talents and skill sets, but of their styles as well. “It’s so nice to design [pieces] together with the client’s input,” she shares. “It all works out really well.” “It’s fun to bring out a story for the client—whether it’s the room or the whole house, it just really has to flow,” she explains. To achieve that, Isles Interiors’ process relies on finding or creating one-of-a-kind pieces that tie it all together.

1. Have a good relationship with your client. 2. Map out your story and your plan. 3. Don’t deviate from the plan! 4. Find unique or custom pieces.

From Max’s conscious selection when it comes to materials to Maria’s enthusiasm for antique and reclaimed pieces, the couple is putting an environmentally friendly stamp on a style that is uniquely and completely theirs. “We mesh really well together,” Maria says. “It’s fun being creative with him!”

5. Make the space look like the client!

Brooks and Jenny Crawford share more than a marriage—they share a business and a passion to combine their skills to create beautiful spaces. “At the beginning of January 2019, we started this adventure fully selfemployed, and it’s been great so far,” Brooks says. And while Jenny was always supportive of Brookside Design behind the scenes, her true niche in the company swiftly made itself apparent.

“When Brooks started in January...I was helping him with social media and background things,” Jenny explains. “But then we decided to do photoshoots of his projects to really build our portfolio.” Upon seeing outdoor furniture à la Home Depot paired with her husband’s stunning work, Jenny decided to pull everything out and stage it herself for the shoot. When the clients saw the decor transformation, they were amazed, making her “realize that there was a real niche

You pull everything out of the space, you sort like items, you purge what you no longer need, love or use and you come up with a creative plan for how you’re going to install it back in... then you create that system in a new way, and that’s what sticks.”

Names: Sara and Rich Combs Job Titles: Creators, The Joshua Tree House

For Sara and Rich Combs, what began as a cross-country road trip to escape the daily grind turned into a booming project, dedicated to helping others reconnect with themselves and with nature.

“without questioning it,” they bought The Joshua Tree House. While it originally began as a home for them to reset and work on their own projects, the Combs soon found success in listing their home as an Airbnb.

“We really fell in love with Joshua Tree on that trip,” Sara says. “After we went back [home] to New York, we kept thinking about how good it felt there, how creative we felt there with the open landscape.”

“We realized other people were craving a space like that as well,” Sara shares. “We eventually opened it up full-time for bookings, and then we fell in love with creating spaces for people where they can reconnect with nature and have that time to reset.”

The couple was drawn back to the California desert, and 128 LOCALE MAGAZINE

From there, the couple began renovating more spaces and taking on more projects, which has, in turn, shone a light on how they work together as a team. While both share a similar aesthetic, Rich is more detail-oriented, and Sara is more big-picture. “Even when we were [painting] in high school and college, Sara would always work with all these really big brushes and use her entire arm,” Rich explains. “Then I would come in with a very small brush and paint the little details.” While both their business and personal relationship sound worthy of a storybook, the journey hasn’t been without its obstacles. In 2019, the pair took on their largest and most challenging project yet: The Posada in Arizona. “We got this property in Tucson that was an old, abandoned inn, and we wanted to renovate it,” Sara shares. “It was the biggest space we’d ever done, and we just went for it because it felt perfect.” They soon found

“I owe it to my clients to give them creative and new—I don’t just want to play my greatest hits.” —Raili Clasen

Raili Clasen is a gal who oozes California cool. Even the Orange County native’s everyday ensemble is indicative of her trendsetting design style, pairing classic pieces like jeans and a striped tee with her signature checkerboard sneakers for a look that is timeless with a twist. This is her approach: make it pleasing but with tons of personality. Clasen is known for mixing coastal and contemporary elements to create a new category of interior design that marries midcentury with maritime.

Name: Raili Clasen Job Title: Interior Designer, RailiCA Design

A San Diego State alum, Clasen kick-started her post-college career in advertising before setting her eye on the sky for a brief stint as a flight attendant, which was a way to guarantee her travel itch would get scratched. She grounded herself after 3 years and made her way into the surf industry as an instrumental part of bigname companies like Raisin Swimwear, Roxy and Paul Frank. Clasen went on to co-found a company called Alice Supply Co.—a line of hip housewares that took your everyday items and candy-coated them in color. This was Clasen’s intro to the world of interiors, and she rode the wave into the industry and never looked back.

A

Clasen launched her career as an interior designer six years ago and has quite literally branded her name into the business (seriously, she owns a brander). Clasen just does things differently. She puts the “fun” in functional and thinks imperfect is exciting. She loves to pair old and new, borrowed and blue and is always striving for that “big wow moment” in a space. Clasen often opts for oversized anything to give a project some pizazz and infuses her love of surf culture into her designs. Attention to detail is in her DNA, and every square inch of a room—from the floorboards to the ceiling beams—is fair game for extra flair. Clasen is someone who can’t help but color outside the lines, and the result usually falls somewhere between cool and crazy. “I owe it to my clients to give them creative and new–I don’t just want to play my greatest hits.” And people are obsessed. From hello to yellow, everybody is living for Clasen’s local-gone-loco design style that you can find plastered all over Pinterest. Clasen can go bright and light or moody and modern, but she always finds a creative way to incorporate elements of the ocean to pay homage to her hometown. She does this through playing with textiles like macramé or mudcloth to add dimension and texture to a room, sometimes even DIYing it to get the exact look she wants. But what really sets Clasen apart is her ability to get to know her clients, find their quirks and unique subtleties and then customize her creations accordingly. Whether it’s framing a forgotten flea market find, hanging a gallery wall of guitars or unveiling an installation featuring a family catchphrase, Clasen personalizes every project with pride and does so with a huge infectious smile on her face. Life is really a beach with Clasen by your side. 134 LOCALE MAGAZINE

HOW TO MAKE: DESIGNING A COASTAL -CHIC SPACE Raili Clasen’s 6 Steps to a California Cool Space

A

Attempting a coastal cool makeover can often leave you shell-shocked. If you’re feeling un-shore of yourself, check out these tide and true tips from expert Raili Clasen to avoid looking like a fish out of water.

Step 1:

• Name Your Project. “That’s the first thing I do when I start a project... I name it in my own mind–I don’t even tell anybody. Everything we put in the house has to fit into that name.”

Step 2:

• Begin With a Blank Canvas. “Paint everything white and bring in natural elements; create as much natural light as possible. Bring in natural elements like any kind of woods. Oak is very chic, but I am loving pine and plywood at the moment. It’s very kitschy, but it translates really well into coastal.”

Step 3:

• Pick a Personality Piece. “Whether it’s art, a mural, a gallery wall or maybe it’s an installation like the ‘Count Your Blessings’ wall I had in my house, you need a personality piece.” Clasen loves to use oversized prints or Almond Surfboards to create a “big wow moment.”

big bulbs and brass accents. Try trading ocean blues for bright yellows for a modern take on coastal cool design.

Step 5:

• Opt for Functional Furnishings. “I’m nontraditional in that I bring everything close together–I call them conversation pits.” Clasen also believes that “rugs are for comfort; I love cushy.”

Step 6:

• Be Open. Clasen is a big fan of “freestyle” when it comes to finishing touches. From pottery to pillows to plants, she recommends testing out different textiles.

Step 4:

• Light It Up! “I love oversized lights.” Clasen tends to opt for over-the-top light fixtures with

Fire, Water and Stone Midway City

THIS SOCAL COMPANY IS SHAPING THE ART OF POTTERY AS WE KNOW IT WRITTEN BY: DIEGO E. GAXIOLA PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NIKI CRAM Founded over 45 years ago, ARCHPOT is a family-owned small business behind the design and creation of breathtaking fire and water features and gorgeous pottery, found in a multitude of locations around the country. “Something a lot of people don’t know, being a smaller family business, is that we are in some pretty well-known hot spots. The Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Fashion Island and Pelican Hill in Orange County and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC,” explains ARCHPOT’s General Manager Tim Hall. An Orange County local, Hall, reminisces of his humble beginnings, detailing how the company transformed from a wholesale nursery to a highlyreputable manufacturer.

F

Thinking back to his childhood, Hall states, “I have always been creative and originally wanted to become an architect.” After Hall and his family moved from Mission Viejo to Tustin, he began to shadow his father, immersing himself in the art of pottery creation and familiarizing

himself with the challenges often faced when running a business. “The family business started off with plants—we were a wholesale nursery. Later came the marriage of plants and imported pottery, creating Architectural Pottery in 1989,” he says. Hall attributes a lot of his creativity to others’ creations on social media. “People inspire me. I like to see what is out there, and I ask myself how I can do better. How can I put a product out there that people will want in their home or business space?” In 2019, 30 successful years later, the family decided to rebrand the company, unveiling the name ARCHPOT. “Of course, in every family business, there are challenges. Any challenge we have had has resulted in growth,” explains Hall. With the continued expansion of the company, Hall and his team are able to focus on delivering products that truly distinguish themselves from others in the market. From the material and finish process to ARCHPOT’s utilization of high-tech and lightweight cement, the company is constantly striving to create products that exemplify expert craftsmanship. Overseas Inspiration • When Hall was just 17, he took a trip to Greece where he watched handthrown pottery being shaped. It was at that moment he realized the creation of pottery was indeed an art form. In the Works • Currently, ARCHPOT is working on custom Belize fire tables for the historic Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. “We are taking such pride in this project because of the historic location.”
