MAKING THE ISSUE The core elements of a typical yoga experience—community, positivity and stillness— are amplified through a commitment to excellence at Russell Simmons’ TantrÍs yoga studio in West Hollywood. From a valet to a full hair salon within the two-story space, Simmons brings ancient yoga teachings to impressive modernity at his chic location. His activewear collection lines the walls of the studio, encouraging guests to fully embrace the TantrÍs experience as a way of life, rather than a mere fitness class. Beyond the luxuries of Simmons’ critically acclaimed studio, yogis will be happy to know that countless works of yoga literature are shelved on TantrÍs’ second floor. A stunning lounge full of these books beckons guests upstairs, where I interviewed Simmons on a large bean bag outside the two heated studio rooms. As community is encouraged in this space, Simmons said passing hellos to energetic teachers coming up and down the stairs as we spoke. This aspect of TantrÍs highlights the studio as a no judgement zone, welcoming people of all backgrounds to change their minds and their bodies in a positive environment. Even photographer Travis McCoy felt the good vibes of the space, saying, “I have been a fan of Russell’s since I was a kid. He was so nice and gave us a lot of his precious time. It was an honor to shoot such a legend.” Where the typical yoga studio can be a daunting space, Simmons emphasizes comfort on all levels at TantrÍs. It wasn’t until I took a class that I understood why these lush elements were necessary—to remove all distractions and focus on the stillness found through yoga.

A NOTE FROM OUR

PUBLISHER Home has never had an address for me. From my earliest recollection, our family was loading up a moving truck nearly every year. Mostly, we moved around the same city, usually less than a few miles from our previous address. We had a couple of larger moves, including a move my senior year of high school that took me from my home state of California to Flagstaff, AZ. The desire to change homes so rapidly must be genetic. My dad was a mover, his dad was a mover and from what I can tell our family has always been on the move. I have carried on with this tradition, and as of writing this, I am now living in my 35th house in the last 38 years.

years since, she has become my cheerleader, support system, travel partner, stepmom to my children, fiancé and now wife. I now cannot imagine existence without her and any day away from her is a day away from home.

Home has always been more of a feeling. Home is the way you fold your towels, the way the house smells when your mom is cooking and the people you choose to snuggle on the couch with. Home is where the people I care the most about are.

We were lucky enough to catch up with the upcoming star of Showtime’s “Shameless,” Perry Mattfeld (p. 72), witness the beauty of a company working to help feed those less fortunate (p. 64) and show you how to add some sparkle to your New Year’s (p. 92).

Erin, if you are reading this for the first time or the fifth, I hope these words I stole from Edward Sharpe ring true to you and become more real as the years wear on, “Home is wherever I'm with you.ˮ Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming. In this Home///Away issue, we will help you stock your bar cart (p. 94), upgrade your closet (p. 68) and give you our ABC's of home decor and travel (p. 37).

On Oct. 20 my definition of a home changed forever. Even though my fiancé Erin and I have lived together for almost five years and had been engaged for more than two, the celebration and ceremony on that date in October made home mean so much more to me. It’s now how we fold our towels, the way our cooking makes the house smell and the snuggles on the couch with our family that will mean home to me for the rest of my life. Erin Frances Price did not exist to me before Feb. 5, 2012. I didn't even know the day before that I needed her, but in those five

Within 26 stories, we also talk to one of our favorite local chefs in the friendly confines of their own kitchen (p. 84), give you an insider’s look at the Melrose Trading Post (p. 127) and talk with celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Marc Mani about his incredible work (p. 102). We hope you can find plenty of our suggestions helpful and we hope you tap some of the local companies we recommend in this issue to make your house feel like a home.

EXPERT: Jihan Zencirli CREDENTIALS: Owner of Geronimo Balloons

MONDAY ¢ Many Mondays I'm returning from working in New York where I have a second office, or in another city/country and no matter what time I land, I always leave the plane hungry and can get a meal in K-Town. TUESDAY ¢ I'm running to the public library to get some books on CD for my car. I'm the last person in the world to rent them, but I love driving around listening to a David Rakoff book of essays. I'll grab something to drink across the street at Nice Coffee, the new project by Tyler Wells of Handsome Coffee Roasters. nicecoffee.com WEDNESDAY ¢ I never plan any meetings on Wednesday, as it's my catch-up day for all the things I didn't get to finish over the weekend when I was traveling or working. And if I'm feeling self-indulgent, I go to Larchmont Beauty Center to get lost in the rows of supplies and then go browsing at vintage clothing store, Recess, on La Brea. larchmontbeauty.com recessla.com THURSDAY ¢ If I have a business meeting, I try to always suggest Figaro Bistrot on Vermont in Los Feliz, since the outdoor seating is really bustling and energetic and it

feels good to be in the thick of it all. After, I'll head to Skylight Books and then poke my head into New High Mart for their curated supplies and deadstock goods. figarobistrot.com skylightbooks.com FRIDAY ¢ I try to go to museums on Friday and this week I'll go to the Hammer Museum. I also enjoy their shop more than any other museum store, and an early dinner of Plum Ochazuke at Morinoya on Olympic Boulevard, before heading to La Cienega to a comedy show at Largo to see my crush Nick Kroll. hammer.ucla.edu restaurant-morinoya.com SATURDAY ¢ I grew up going for Saturday morning drives and I still get up at 6 a.m. and see where my car takes me. My favorite place to go to is Sierra Madre to wander the trails around Mary's Market. If I'm really feeling up for it, I’ll go to the Huntington Library Gardens, the best museum membership in my wallet, and explore a little or just lay on the lawn in the shade. SUNDAY ¢ Sunday nights, when I'm in town, I host a comedy night at my studio with Ramy Youssef. We call it @iloveujustthewayur and somehow trick retired SNL people to come to perform every once in awhile.

Los Angeles is home to a collection of talented innovators who are paving the way for unique products and amazing designs that give consumers a different twist for their homes. From a surfboard shower to a company that transforms retired aircraft into artistic furniture to an interior designer who will transform your home into a bohemian wonderland, these home experts are transforming the way we design.

31

Hans Thadhani FOUNDER OF STRAND BOARDS

Q: The surfboard shower is so unique. What inspired you to create it? Hans Thadhani: Strand Boards were born out of a need. We live close to the beach and we were remodeling our home. With three kids under five, we wanted a water play feature for the days we didn’t want to go to the beach. For the days we did go to the beach, we wanted a place to wash the sand off before coming inside. Lastly, we wanted to bring the beach vibe home and what better way to do that than with a surfboard? We thought ‘surely someone makes these?’ But we didn’t like anything we saw out in the market quality or looks wise. We made a shower exactly to our liking and specifications. Enter Strand Boards! Q: What other products do you have available? HT: Strand Boards has since expanded

into making other items out of boards from surfboard chandeliers to surfboard furniture. Q: What goes into creating a surfboard shower? Where is the best place to set one up in the home? HT: Since we incorporate the plumbing into all the showers, this makes for a nice clean back of the surfboard. It then gets a special process of layers which is why we are able to offer customization of colors and naming your board. We then ask our clients if they want to mount it to their structure or make it a stand-alone feature. It’s actually very simple to mount and we send you instructions and the hardware too! So really the best place to set up a surfboard shower is up to the client. It could be as simple as using a hose if you don't have access to hot and cold water lines.

Teryl Ciarlo LANDSCAPE DESIGNER

Q: What brought you into this line of work? Teryl Ciarlo: When I was growing up, I spent most weekends at my grandmother’s property. She had two acres in Palos Verdes Estates filled with fruit trees, tons of roses, lovely brick planters and sprawling grass. I loved that place. She always hosted garden parties, and as a young child I would climb the trees, pick fruit and help her cut roses. I think her passion for indoor/ outdoor living inspired me. When I was older, it became a hobby to help friends plan out their gardens, and then eventually I started to really learn from a landscape contractor who was doing fabulous houses in Malibu. She hired me to help her and I was hooked! Yet another female that inspired me about the beauty of houses and gardens. I guess you could say I have always had a green thumb. Plain and simple, gardens make me happy! Q: What part of garden design are you most passionate about? TC: I think I am most passionate about

the placement and positioning of the garden design process. I am really into making sure each corner of the garden counts. A lot of thought needs to go into the process so that there is no wasted space. Details are my passion. Q: What is your process like? Any tools that you cannot live without? TC: My process is to make sure that the homeowner is happy about indoor/outdoor living, which is so important in California. Everyone has their wish list and I try to incorporate that into the space. Some people want a sports court, a fire pit and a gravel garden with a farmhouse table for outdoor dining, and sometimes there is not enough room for all of it! I also try to encourage my clients to become eco-conscious and environmentally aware. Our future depends on it. One of the most important things that I cannot live without is outdoor lighting. Lighting is everything. It makes the garden feel magical.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS • Teryl loves outdoor kitchens for entertaining and impromptu cocktail parties, and belives it is always important to have them placed properly to optimize function.

Dave Hall

FOUNDER OF MOTOART

Q: What inspired you to start MotoArt? Dave Hall: We started this business because we saw a lot of our favorite aircraft disappearing. We didn’t set out to make a career of it; we set out to preserve aviation history from being scrapped forever. Making something artistic and fun gave us this opportunity. Q: What are your go-to tools when it comes to working with such tough materials? DH: Working with these vintage aircraft takes hours of fabrications. Some of our pieces can take up to 300 plus hours. Q: What projects are you most excited about at the moment? DH: We just finished the main art piece for the new

County of San Luis Obispo airport. It was eight months of planning and design. The installation was flawless, and we had happy customers. The project consisted of using two Gulfstream airplanes, and the engine cowling off a Boeing 747. Q: Do you think more people should start upcycling? Any advice for the newbies? DH: Yes. I think upcycling is quickly becoming more popular. When we started our company 17 years ago, there wasn’t really anyone doing it. For someone who is looking to get in the business, my advice is to find things in multiples. Nothing is more difficult than spending a lot of time on a piece, then marketing and selling it, to only realize you have one to work with.

REDUCE, REUSE • MotoArt crafts furniture and accessories from salvaged airplane parts in order to make home furnishings like desks, couches and coffee tables.

IN TUNE • She once planted a rose garden for Burt Bacharach!

SLEEP EASY • Lay your weary head on creations like a C-124 Cargo bed or a 747 Jetliner bed!

highlight! It allowed me to combine my skillsets and interests, and enabled me to reach a lot of people, encouraging them to live wild and creatively. Plus, it was a ton of fun to work on—I got to collaborate with other incredible creative souls who inspire me immensely, like Dabito, Emily Katz, Adam Pogue and my sis, Faith Blakeney. Q: What is your biggest source of inspiration when it comes to your projects? JB: Inspiration is everywhere: observing pattern, textures and combos/contrasts in nature, researching the history and art of various cultures while traveling, and my family. Q: What is your rule of thumb when it comes to approaching a project? JB: Decorate wild!

Photoshoot Location: Los Angeles, CA

Q: What is your style/aesthetic? DB: It would be modern/minimalist. ‘Less is more,’ we would say. It’s like bringing Bauhaus design to the 21st century, but including human interaction. It’s about how someone lives in a space and inhabits a space. Q: What is your biggest source of inspiration? DB: Traveling. Seeing new things and experiencing new things. It doesn’t have to be design; it could be good music, good food and spending some time with friends.

DESIGNER, ARTIST, AUTHOR AND FOUNDER OF THE JUNGALOW Q: Your recent book, “The New Bohemians,” is full of awesome ideas and tips for the home. What inspired you to write it in the first place? Justina Blakeney: Thank you! When I first pitched the project, there wasn’t an existing home decor book that really focused on the way that I loved to live—full of color, eclectic, collected, full of life, plants and creativity—and any books that did feature homes in similar styles were more photojournalistic, but did not give readers help or guidance as to how to translate the look in their own home.

Q: What brought you to architecture in the first place? Dan Brunn: From a young age, my grandfather used to bring [LEGO] sets home, and I would come up with my own construction ideas. In high school, there were some architecture classes, and I really fell in love with it. It just felt like something natural to me.

GO WILD • This summer/ fall, The Jungalow launched an athleisure line with Beyond Yoga, a collection of furniture with Living Spaces and their signature fabrics on Fabric.com and Calico Corners.

Q: What are you working on now? DB: We’re working on a bunch of projects. We have in construction right now a condo in Westwood that’s combining two units into one that’s 6,000 square feet total. We just completed a coffee shop on Melrose and La Brea, which [opened] in mid-September, and we’re working on a house up in Sunset Plaza that’s 12,000 square feet. It’s a courtyard scheme that’s revolving around an olive tree in the middle, and all the rooms around it have incredible vantage points and views of nature. The allure of Hollywood entices many, but only a few make it to the top. It’s a turbulent business, made for those most dedicated to their craft or those with an unwavering work ethic. When an LA local can make it in the film and television industry, and then turn around and become a top selling, multi-million dollar real estate agent, one should be inspired.

One man who has done just that is Craig Knizek, CoManaging Director/Partner of The Agency’s Sherman Oaks and Calabasas offices. The producer of Sony/NBC’s “Mad About You,” and the original associate producer of “The Simpsons,” Craig made the transition to real estate after a 20-year career in entertainment.

“I love seeing first-time buyers and families reaching for their dream home. It’s an honor to be their trusted guide.” — C R A I G K N I Z E K

Though you may think the two industries stand far apart from one another, Knizek would disagree. “I learned to exert incredible attention to detail [as a producer],” he explains. “In creating content, conducting business or making a deal, every thought, every email—it all matters. I also learned that I had to work harder than anyone else, and to understand the creative temperament of artists, which is similar to understanding the sensitive mentality of a home buyer/seller.” Real estate felt like a natural transition for Craig, who was already building and renovating spec homes with his wife, designer Allison Knizek. In fact, they have built 14 homes to date since 2002. This longstanding passion led to Knizek’s transition to The Agency. Mauricio Umansky and Billy Rose founded The Agency fueled by a passion and desire to offer their clients better representation and unsurpassed service. With a star-studded team, including Knizek, The Agency has redefined the business of real estate, modernizing and advancing the industry by fostering a culture of partnership and collaboration. “It’s truly an entrepreneurial enterprise that fits my temperament,” Knizek says. The majority of Knizek’s business covers the San Fernando Valley, from Hidden Hills to Toluca Lake, but he has clients all over LA, including Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Los Feliz and Beverly Hills. Although he closes plenty of deals under $2 million, a larger portion of Knizek’s business is migrating upward toward more expensive homes. According to Knizek, Encino is one of the hottest spots in LA to buy right now. “[This area] has

large lots, which yield large homes in this era of zoning restrictions. Large homes afford affluent buyers the amenities they seek—wine cellars, movie theaters, gyms, guest houses and that rarest of attributes—land.” While land, a finite resource in our bustling city, is one of the most coveted commodities in LA real estate right now, Knizek said he still feels we’re in a seller’s market. “A good house is what everyone wants, more so than an affordable or ‘cheap’ house at a bargain. Today’s world demands people work harder, and they want to spend their precious time with family, not necessarily putting in sweat equity to renovate their home,” he asserts. “Plus, by working so hard and enjoying financial success, most buyers want and deserve a lovely home.”

As for his own version of home, Knizek and his wife have lived in Sherman Oaks for 21 years, raising their two daughters in the neighborhood. With a generous lot size, the couple utilized their experience of building homes to construct a beautiful guesthouse that was featured in the Wall Street Journal, with an incredible backyard where the family can relax and spend time together. “My wife is an incredible designer, and we’re constantly renovating rooms and redesigning space within the house,” Knizek says. “I strongly believe in the American dream and am so heartened daily by getting the privilege to witness firsthand the fruits of this incredible system,” he continues. “I love seeing first-time buyers and families reaching for their dream home. Captain Mando CAPTAIN OF THE CATALINA EXPRESS Q: What drew you to work in the ferry business? Captain Mando: I grew up on the water. When I was 18, I always wanted to work on a boat and Catalina Express hired me as a deckhand. I had no experience, but I had a great mentor who took me under his wing. It was my calling. I’ve been doing it for 27 years now. Q: What is your favorite part about working for Catalina Express? CM: People are friendly and the crew is like my family. I met a lot of good people here, and it opened up more doors for me, like working on a tugboat on the side. Q: What is your favorite activity to do on Catalina? CM: I fish on the backside of the island with a lot of my friends who have boats. I do a lot of watersports, including snorkeling and spearfishing. Q: If you could travel by boat anywhere, where would you go? CM: Maybe the Virgin Islands or Greece. I’ve always wanted to do something like that. Maybe when I retire, I can rent a boat and just go sailing. It seems like the ocean has always called to me.

I-SEA-YOU • Captain Mando has told himself that he would stay away from the water when he retires, but he always gets an itch to go back if he stays away for too long. I’M ON A BOAT! • For contests, events and promotions sign-up for the Catalina Express monthly e-news at CatalinaExpress.com.

Sarah Zurell CHIEF BRAND OFFICER AT PAVEMINT PARKING APP Q: What inspired you to create Pavemint? Sarah Zurell: I love solving real life problems with human powered technology, and so when I met Randall Jamail, Pavemint’s CEO, I knew parking was a problem I could help solve. Thirty percent of city traffic is caused by people looking for parking, and that comes to 4.2 billion tons of CO2 every year just in LA alone. If people know where they are going to park before they leave their house, they won’t have to spend 20 minutes looking for a space, and their cars wouldn’t pollute our air. And who doesn’t love cleaner air? “IF PEOPLE KNOW WHERE THEY ARE GOING TO PARK BEFORE THEY LEAVE THEIR HOUSE, THEY WON’T HAVE TO SPEND 20 MINUTES LOOKING FOR A SPACE, AND THEIR CARS WOULDN’T POLLUTE OUR AIR. AND WHO DOESN’T LOVE CLEANER AIR?” —SARAH ZURELL

reservations vary from $5 to $100, and it all depends on demand and where the space is located. In Silver Lake, you might pay $5 for a few hours, whereas if you were going to a Ram’s game at USC, you might pay up to $100. Typically beach city spaces go for around $10 to $30 for the day. Q: What are your hopes for the future of Pavemint? SZ: Pavemint is so much more than a parking app. We are working to make it easier to drive an electric vehicle, as well as working with the city to make parking lots into parks and integrating Pavemint into self-driving cars so people can drive around like a VIP.

I spend most of my disposable income on travel. That’s what drew me into the industry. You get perks, and it’s good to be involved in something you like to do. There are hotels everywhere, so it doesn’t really matter where you live there is opportunity. Q: What is your favorite aspect of your job? KC: My favorite thing about my job is that working at a boutique hotel we are not very restricted by guidelines. I get to really express myself. I’m in charge of the brand of our hotel, so it feels like my personal hotel. Q: What has been the most interesting moment during your time at Avenue of the Arts? KC: Everyday is interesting. One of the things about the hospitality business is that it is always evolving and things are always different. We get rock bands to cast and crews of Broadway shows to royalty from the Middle East to giant parties to small private wine dinners. There’s always something happening. Since we’re in such a unique location in a city that’s a center for cool, it’s really good to be a go-to place for those kinds of things.

WALK THE WALK • Costa Mesa being “the center for cool” as Chouinard says, the Avenue of the Arts Hotel is only about a five-minute walk to the Segerstrom Center of the Arts. WORTHY CONTENDER • Chouinard says the biggest challenge is standing out amongst big names, and with a Marriott and a Westin only a five-minute walk away, the challenge is even more pronounced.

Amanda Szabo FOUNDER OF RESORTPASS

Q: What inspired you to create ResortPass? Amanda Szabo: There are so many resorts in San Diego and all I wanted to do is lie by the pool, have a drink and go in the hot tub at hotels near where I live. I didn’t feel comfortable sneaking in, so I’m thinking these pools are empty a lot of the time; so why can’t I pay just to be there? I hadn’t been able to do that because hotels didn’t have a system, so I connected these two sides by providing that system for hotels to benefit from hotel day-guests. Q: Which hotels have accepted and began selling ResortPass? AS: There are a few. The first one was the Estancia La Jolla Hotel &

Spa. They had a beautiful pool and a really nice spa. They benefitted from locals looking to use their pools and cabanas. Other hotels include the Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa and the Paséa Hotel & Spa, as well as hotels in Hawaii, Texas, Florida and Arizona. Q: What is the best part about creating a way for people to have a “daycation”? AS: It makes me happy that people can enjoy luxury. They don’t have to sneak around, and the pass allows them justifying going to a hotel. It opens up more opportunities to people, and I look forward to allowing them the opportunity to experience it.

Kathrin and Brian Smirke OWNERS OF WE ARE IN OUR ELEMENT Q: What is the Dome in the Desert? Katherine Smirke: The Dome is a secluded house in Joshua Tree. It is a place of solace and solitude that can be rented through Airbnb. Q: What inspires you to create these spaces? Brian Smirke: Before we had the Dome, we were in LA buying properties and fixing them up in terms of how people were going to live in them. The Dome gave us the ability to create a space totally devoid of what other people wanted. Knowing that it wasn’t a full-time residence, we didn’t have to be totally practical. We could design the spaces in a more interesting way and do it purely to our likes and dislikes. That was what inspired us to continue; it’s such a creative process.

“IT’S NOT A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE JUST COME TO SLEEP; WE TRY TO CREATE A MOOD AND ALLOW THE GUESTS TO EXPERIENCE THE DESERT IN OUR EYES.” —KATHRIN AND BRIAN SMIRKE

Q: What makes you different from other homes on Airbnb? BS: What makes us different is that we buy some of the most run-down

properties and fix them up with budget restrictions. We can reenvision and create the way we like. We like creating an experience for our guests. It’s not a place where people just come to sleep; we try to create a mood and allow the guests to experience the desert in our eyes. Anyone can book a hotel, but we don’t think they would be able to feel as connected. Q: What is your favorite part about the Airbnb business? KS: Doing this stuff is great because it gives us opportunities to be creative. Once it’s done, we have time to pursue other things we’re interested in. Of course, we have to keep in touch and see if everything is flowing smoothly. We give our guests a lot of privacy, but we enjoy hearing about their experiences. Some people even get engaged at the Dome, or have other life altering experiences. Some people have even bought their own places in the desert because they loved it so much; it makes it so special.

Destination VACATION Hotel Paseo is About to Be Your Favorite Palm Desert Getaway

WRITTEN BY: AMEIHIA TURINGAN PHOTOGRAPHED BY: GEORGE DUCHANNES

Known as a city where “snowbirds” come to escape the cold of winter, Palm Desert is adding a new place for them to relax in. Hotel Paseo, the newest venture in Palm Desert, invites you to check in for a stay at its establishment. Nestled in the Coachella Valley, Hotel Paseo is the first luxury hotel to be built in Palm Desert in 30 years. The Autograph Collection hotel contains an array of amenities and experiences to guarantee that you’ll have an enjoyable time. “[Ten years ago], our owners saw that there was something missing in the El Paseo shopping district; they thought that a luxury hotel could anchor and complement the shopping area,” said General Manager Gil Reyes. Described as an “homage to the effortless style of the Golden Era” by Reyes, the hotel is meant to provide a warm and fun environment that “empower[s] visitors and locals to find their path.” Inside the hotel, guests can check into one of the 150 rooms or the renovated 25-foot vintage 1950s Airstream Cruiser trailer located on the backyard lawn. All rooms are decorated with local artwork and equipped with smart TVs to stream Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora and YouTube. “It's uniquely in a position to incorporate modern technology to the overall guest experience,” said Reyes. Along with the lodgings, the hotel boasts a spa, restaurant, fitness center and pool. At the spa, you can relax with couples massages, manicures and pedicures. To eat, guests will be served breakfast, lunch, dinner and happy hour at Chef Andrew Copley, Juliana Copley and Tony Marchese’s AC3 Restaurant + Bar, which specializes in new American cuisine with global twists and serves cocktails, California craft beers and wine. The hotel also has an expansive workout room featuring new equipment, bicycles, morning yoga and tai chi classes as well as a pool to help guests burn off a few calories. After swimming a few laps, you can treat yourself to the cabana bar or play lawn games with the bocce ball court, cornhole or shuffle board. If you decide to venture out and soak in the desert sun, the hotel is located right in the premium shopping, dining and art gallery destination of El Paseo. Reyes recommends that visitors also watch performances at the McCallum Theater, see animals at The Living Desert and play golf at Desert Willow Golf Resort, as all three will have a partnership with the hotel. With all these incredible amenities close at hand, what are you waiting for?

P L AT E F U L Cheeky is Helping the Hungry One Plate at a Time

WRITTEN BY: JUSTIN SEDGWICK PHOTOGRAPHED BY: JOE NARDELLO

Speak to any Silicon Beach entrepreneur and they’ll gladly serenade you with a grandiose story about how they came up with the idea for their “world-changing startup.” These stories often feature the entrepreneurs becoming enlightened at events like Burning Man or Coachella, or discovering their newfound passion for philanthropy while trekking across the globe. For PJ Brice, the founder of the tableware company Cheeky, he found his inspiration for his startup at an unusual but groovy place: a concert by none other than “The Dude” himself.

“My wife Kimmy and I were attending a Jeff Bridges concert when he stopped to talk about hunger in America,” Brice said. “We were shocked to learn (at the time) that one in eight people don’t know where their next meal is coming from. It’s not just homeless people who face food insecurity. When someone must decide to skip a meal so they can afford their electricity bill, that is a problem. It’s a problem that we can solve.”

M

Brice took it upon himself to find a solution to that problem by starting Cheeky in 2014. The company offers “modern tableware with a witty spirit,” with each item having a serene, fashionable design, a stark contrast to the white and empty colors of other tableware items. “We initially saw an opportunity to disrupt the boring disposable table top industry with design and innovation. Simultaneously, we saw an awesome opportunity to raise hunger awareness and make it easy for people to make a difference,” Brice said.

SCRUM AND TACKLE u Brice originally came overseas to America to play rugby. #INSPO

Roy Choi for his talent and creativity with his dishes.

The specific way Brice and his team make a difference is by giving the monetary equivalent of one meal to the hungry every time someone purchases an item from Cheeky. “I’m very thankful that my family always had food on the table growing up and now. I couldn’t imagine being in a situation where I couldn’t provide a meal for my family, which is why it’s great that organizations like Feeding America and No Kid Hungry exist so they can help provide meals to those who need it,” Brice said. In its short existence, Cheeky has already seen massive success, much of it stemming from an exclusive partnership with Target. Brice said there was a conceptual discussion with an executive at the retail giant who shared Brice’s love for ending hunger. Six months after that discussion, the brand was launched chain-wide. “Working with Target on this project has been a dream. Cheeky is a brand that offers Target’s guests a fun, innovative option that makes life more enjoyable, and Target’s partnership has made it possible for Cheeky to generate more than 15 million meals in less than three years.” Brice said the company is in the middle of an expansion plan, where they will sell in other brick and mortar stores and on digital platforms. its name. Not so much a term used in regular American dialect, ‘cheeky’ is a very popular adjective for our friends across the pond. Which makes sense why Brice, originally from Great Britain, chose the name. “When I was 22, I landed in LA and saw the sun, the sea and the sand. It took me about 15 seconds to fall in love with California. I do miss England a great deal, which is why I go back on a regular basis to spend time with family and friends. I’m very proud and happy to say that California is now my home.” Now a SoCal resident with his wife and three children, Brice says he keeps himself incredibly busy outside of his Cheeky responsibilities. “When we’re not traveling to watch our son’s ice hockey [or] our daughter’s ballet recitals, we love to travel, dance, cook, hike, ride, laugh and play!” Starting a new company and making it successful, let alone on the level of Cheeky’s success, is immensely difficult. But Brice said the company has thrived because of the shared passion between him and his partners. “Starting any new business can be daunting. I was fortunate in that I have incredibly hard working and talented partners that share my vision for creating awesome brands that give back. I also am thankful to have the love and support of an amazing wife and family who believe in making a difference.”

Hang It Up, Before You Go-Go CALIFORNIA CLOSETS CAN HELP YOU DESIGN A CLOSET THAT WOULD MAKE CARRIE BRADSHAW BLUSH

WRITTEN BY: REBECCA GRAZIER PHOTOGRAPHED BY: JOE NARDELLO

Looking to spice up your closet space? California Closets offers custom designed closets that can fit anyone’s space and style needs. California Closets uses a software called ClosetCad Pro, that allows the designer and client to create their dream closet one component at a time. The designer starts by dragging and dropping the partitions and the very top shelf, then building from there.

L

Clients have the option of choosing from the most basic type of closet with shelves and partitions or going with a completely decked out, Carrie Bradshaw type of closet. However, it’s not so much about the simplicity than it is about how the client wants the space to work for them. For the main structure of the closet, clients can choose from a variety of different finish options ranging from classic white to the upgraded Tesoro™ Collection which is exclusive to California Closets and imported directly from Italy. Now, this is where the real fun starts. After choosing the type of finish, clients are able to select upgraded drawer and door fronts with gorgeous patterns and glass inserts, clear glass or leather shelves and a range of contemporary to luxurious handle options. They’re also able to choose stunning quartz countertops, angled shoe shelves, numerous lighting options—pretty much all the accessories a closet would ever need. Pull out belt racks, tie racks, jewelry trays and hamper rods can be added in as well. If you can think of it, they probably have it.

Q&A WITH CALIFORNIA CLOSETS DESIGN CONSULTANT

Kristina Alcocer

Q: What is your inspiration when designing? Kristina Alcocer: We have this amazing showroom with our design studio. It’s beautiful. Once you open up all the different drawers and see all the different colors and materials that we have, you can start pulling it all out and putting it all together to a vignette, which is kind of your drawing board of what you can possibly play with. That’s kind of where my inspiration comes from, and I also just look at other beautiful closet ideas that I see on Pinterest. Q: What is the process for designing a closet? KA: That’s the fun part. During the initial consultation, that’s where we first start off with just talking to the client, understanding their needs and making sure that we are a proper fit for the client. Then we measure the space and we actually sit down on the first consultation with the client, open our laptops and plot it all into our ClosetCad Pro software. It’s a really collaborative process. Q: What is a typical day for you? KA: My day is always different, and that’s what always makes it really interesting and fun. Pretty much, I have one to two 70 LOCALE MAGAZINE

appointments set for the day, and I visit the client’s home and I manage my time around that. So it’s kind of always changing, but it’s what keeps it interesting. [I have] multiple projects that are always going on, so even though I work from home, it feels like I have a very social job because I have so many clients that I’m working with. Q: How would you describe your style? KA: I’d say that my style is that I like to keep the closet very balanced. I want it to look good, and I try to start off with a focal point of that closet and then I work my way out from that point to kind of build the rest of the space around it so it can all fit together. Q: What’s your favorite part of the closet? KA: That is a tough question because my favorite is probably how the closet comes together as a whole. But, if I had to choose a favorite, it would probably be a tie between floor to ceiling angled shoe shelves behind beautiful glass doors or a large island with a quartz countertop. I commonly use these as a main focal point in the closet and then everything else comes together from there.

Clients have the option of choosing from the most basic type of closet with shelves and partitions, or going with a completely decked out, Carrie Bradshaw type of closet.

Chandra Gilbert's love affair with cooking began at age five when gifted an Easy Bake oven along with an economy sized supply of cake mixes for a birthday present. Gilbert went to work right away, baking cakes and toting them around in a red Easy Rider wagon for profit. "From an early age, I had an appreciation for cooking, baking and commerce," they said. While studying English Literature in college, they worked as a server in several restaurants, and soon jumped from front of the house to kitchen, eventually leaving college to enjoy a long and successful culinary career.

“I enjoy classic holiday dishes too. My family is from the Midwest, pumpkin pie, roast turkey— love it all.” —Chandra Gilbert

With a resumé that includes everything from working as a pastry chef for Alice Waters' Café Fanny in Berkeley, to a cheese maker at Cowgirl Creamery, Chef Gilbert decided to open the original Gracias Madre in 2009 in San Francisco with Café Gratitude founders Matthew and Terces Engelhart.

W

In 2014, Gilbert became the Executive Chef of the plant-based Mexican restaurant, Gracias Madre, in West Hollywood. They see cooking "as an expression of love." Whether at the restaurant or at home, Gilbert feels the most comfortable in the kitchen, creating healthy seasonal dishes for patrons, friends and family.

Between the passing of Gilbert’s father at age 40 from hardening arteries and having a partner who practices veganism, Chef Gilbert decided to make a change in their eating habits, and now enjoys an 80 percent vegan diet. "Eating vegan is cholesterol free dining,” they said. Inspired by their new healthy habits, family members took note and began to modify as well. "Everyone knows plants and vegetables are good for you. Adding them to your diet will add positive health benefits. On top of that, there are environmental benefits," said Gilbert. We visited Gilbert at home and in the kitchen to see this chef in action. "Cooking at home allows for

MAKE THIS: Chef Gilbert’s At Home Go-To Seasonal vegetables like tomatoes, Tuscan melons and roasted beets with oil, garlic and salt, or as Gilbert calls it "the Holy Trilogy." BUTTERNUT SQUASH TACOS • 3 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 2 lbs winter squash, such as butternut or banana squash, peeled and cut in half inch dice • Salt to taste • 1 to 2 chiles chipotle in adobo (to taste), removed from the adobo and minced • 1/2 cup vegan nacho cheese • 1/2 cup toasted pumpkin seeds • 3 avocados cubed • 12 corn tortillas RECIPE: 1. Heat half of the olive oil in a large, heavy cast iron or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add half the squash in a single layer. Turn the heat down to medium. Cook five minutes or until the squash is nicely browned on one side; shake the pan to turn the squash or use tongs. Cook for another five to 10 minutes, shaking the pan often or stirring with a wooden spoon, until the squash is nicely browned and tender when pierced by a knife or fork. Season to taste with salt, then transfer to a bowl. Repeat with the remaining olive oil and squash. 2. When the second batch of squash is tender, return the first batch of squash

to the pan and stir everything together. Add the chipotles, and toss in the pan for one more minute. Remove from the heat, stir for a minute and then stir in the nacho cheese. 3. To heat the tortillas, fill the bottom of a steamer with 1/2 inch of water, and bring to a boil. Meanwhile, wrap the tortillas in a heavy kitchen towel, and place in the steamer basket above the boiling water. Cover tightly and steam one minute, then turn off the heat but do not uncover. Let stand for 15 minutes. 4. Take warmed tortillas and top with the squash. Sprinkle on the pumpkin seeds and avocado, garnish with cilantro and enjoy.

more flexibility. You are freed up from client based demands. In the restaurant, you need to acquire ingredients in mass quantities. At home, I get to shoot from the hip and be adventurous. I can revel in the moment of the season, buy fresh ingredients from local markets like the Santa Monica Market and create fast dishes for myself or friends; off the cuff," said Gilbert. After a long day at work, you may think a chef would want to go home and have someone else cook for them, but not Gilbert. Throughout the day, Gilbert doesn't eat large meals— mostly tasting small bites and sauces. "I look forward to sitting down at home and enjoying a full meal," they said. Inspired by the earth, Gilbert judges a successful meal based on consumption, "If people ask for more, you know it's a hit. If a dish keeps coming back untouched, there's been a breakdown," said Gilbert. "I am truly inspired by the people who work with me. It is important for me to highlight their contributions. I would be nothing without them," they added. In the bright Beverly Hills kitchen, Gilbert whipped up a fresh, spicy guacamole mixed with pomegranates, butternut squash tacos and a pumpkin flan that will send you over the edge—food so good and without the guilt. You may not be a vegan, but Chef Gilbert’s cooking will make you strongly consider it.

Also on hand was Gracias Madre’s beverage director, Maxwell Reis, who prepared a soothing Lion’s Tail Cocktail. One sip will make you want to curl up near a fire and read a good book. Following in the holiday tradition, Gilbert plans on cooking Christmas tamales with raisins, pineapple and apples for friends and family. “We also do ones with butternut squash. I enjoy classic holiday dishes too. My family is from the Midwest, pumpkin pie, roast turkey—love it all,” they said. Forks at the ready!

VEGAN NACHO CHEESE: • 1/2 cup cashews soaked overnight and drained well • 2 chiles chipotle • 3/4 cup water • 1/2 tsp salt • 1 Tbsp lime juice • Blend very well MEZCAL LION'S TAIL: • 2 oz. HONORABLE MENTIONS

Rock and Brews skillfully combines two prominent parts of American culture: hamburgers and rock and roll. What began as a simple idea shared by five founders who live and breathe music has grown into a chain with 20 locations across the United States. This rock-themed restaurant specializes in classic comfort foods, such as burgers, wings and hot dogs with an artful, gourmet twist. Rock and Brews offers a family-friendly environment that captures the essence of the Rock ‘n Roll era. You may come for the rock concert experience, but even more legendary than the music is Rock and Brews’ food.

R

Once you cross Rock and Brews’ opening gate, you feel as if you have entered an outdoor concert venue. Iconic music posters and records line the walls, building the “Great Wall of Rock,” and TV screens spark nostalgia by displaying scenes from rock and roll history. Their open-air patio is decorated with hanging lights and contains rows upon rows of picnic tables. The main body of the restaurant resembles a warehouse and is filled with bar stool tables and picnic tables. The seating arrangement creates an intimate atmosphere, which speaks to the importance of coming together over things that are easy to agree on: good music and great food. The comfortable, good-natured ambiance makes Rock and Brews the perfect restaurant to gather family and friends. Once you have assembled your crew, sit back and have a look at Rock and Brews’ menu. Each section of the menu

KISS ME You know your dining experience will be truly rock inspired when two of the five partners of the Rock and Brews restaurants are Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, members of the renowned band KISS.

reflects the concert theme with titles like “Headliner Sandwiches,” “Opening Acts” and “Classic Hits.” No matter your selection, you are sure to encounter a mouth-watering bite. Although you cannot go wrong with any of the menu items, their Craft Burgers section should catch your eye. The menu features eight burgers, but for those with an affinity for spice, look no further than the Fire Roasted Green Chili Cheeseburger. The foundation of every burger is the patty, and at Rock and Brews, the burgers are fresh ground and hand formed. Iceberg lettuce, red onion and tomato are carefully tucked under the grilled patty. A layer of, not once, but twice melted Pepper Jack cheese is then draped over the meat. The fresh vegetables make an audible crunch when you bite into them, while the cheese adds a creamy yet spicy nuance to the burger. The ingredients listed thus far may have already decided your order, but the burger’s namesake ingredient makes this dish unforgettable. Poblano peppers, a mild Mexican chili pepper, are roasted to perfection then added as the cherry-on-top to the burger. With just the right amount of spice, the peppers are the ingredient that make this burger distinct from any other. The burger is then finished off with a drizzle of a Chipotle aioli sauce that will have you licking your fingers. What better frame to encase this masterpiece than a toasted sesame brioche bun? The bun is both crispy on the toasted side and soft on the inside, the proper texture to seal in all the flavors. As a final touch, each burger is pierced with a wooden skewer to hold in all the savory ingredients.

Ten, nine, eight...you know the countdown, and it’s just around the corner! There’s no holiday quite like New Year’s Eve—the gold, the glitter and that midnight kiss. But what really makes New Year’s Eve great isn’t the chance to start over, it’s having your friends, family and loved ones surround you as you celebrate another year together. And what better way to celebrate than with New Year’s Eve inspired decor and tasty drinks to top off the night.

MAKE A TRULY BITTER • 5 oz Truly Spiked &

Sparkling Grapefruit & Pomelo • 1/2 oz Campari • 1/2 oz Cointreau • Juice From a Lemon or Orange Wedge • Grapefruit or Orange Wedge or Twist for Garnish

First things first, you can’t let your guests go thirsty, and you definitely don’t want to find yourself thousands of calories deep from sugary cocktails—not to mention the hangover that will ensue the morning after. Your best bet? Opt for a light

calorie drink with only one gram of sugar. Truly Spiked & Sparkling offers you the best of both worlds— delicious flavors like Grapefruit & Pomelo, Colima Lime, Lemon & Yuzu and Sicilian Blood Orange and for only 100 calories. Yes, you read that correctly, 100 calories, one gram of sugar and a whole lot of amazing. Last but definitely not least, you’re going to need a playlist to keep the night going. You’re obviously going to have Queen Bey to grace your list’s presence, but don’t forget about the classics like “Auld Lang Syne,” the Mariah Carey version (obviously). You can even round up the top hits of the year and reminisce about where you were when “Look What You Made Me Do” hit the radio. Now all you have left to do is grab your crush, watch the ball drop and ring in 2018.

104 LOCALE MAGAZINE

It’s true that you get what you pay for when you visit Dr. Marc Mani. It’s also true that his work speaks for itself. What makes celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow recommend him to her millions of fans on Goop.com? What made Forbes Magazine name him as one of the country’s 10 leading plastic surgeons? The reasoning not only lies in his skill, but also in a hidden talent that anyone who hasn’t visited his office might not expect. At his home in Beverly Hills, it is easy to miss a small, detailed sketch of a young child hanging above the couch. Even as a young boy, he exhibited mastery with a pencil in hand, and that unassuming sketch suddenly became remarkable as he revealed he was the artist. With accuracy and a likeness that seemed as though it was done by a pro, it was a shock to hear he was only nine years old when it was completed. “My mother was an artist and her mother was an artist. Art was always in my blood and in my genes,” he said. “Since I was four or five years old, I was pretty much able to draw what I saw.” Fast forward to 2017, and that pencil has been replaced with a scalpel. His father was a surgeon, and a self-made one to boot. Having left India on his own to pursue his dreams, his father was granted a scholarship from Cambridge University in England. Mani, born and raised in Abilene, Texas, wanted to follow in his footsteps. Once accepted into Harvard, Mani dove head first into the most technically difficult field of surgery he could study: cardiac. It wasn’t until he saw a big reconstructive surgery on his plastic surgery rotation as a medical student that he fell in love. “Everything kind of crystallized…I remember that specific moment when I knew that this was what I needed to do. It was kind of like a calling,” he said. “In plastic surgery, we operate from head to toe. We can operate on any part of the body, including the brain or outside the brain, and a lot of people don’t understand that.” But, on reflection, Mani revealed the underlying truth that brought aesthetic surgery to the forefront when it came to choosing his field of concentration. “What really got me into plastic surgery is that fact that I’ve always been able to draw and paint faces in particular,” Mani said. He knew that art would enhance his vision of beauty and humanity. When starting his private practice, he dedicated himself to doing more. He felt like it was something he had to do in order to strengthen his work. “I depict things in very realistic form. I never thought I would use it in my profession, but it ended up helping me in getting better results,” he said. It’s surprising to him that most people cannot see the relationship between his practice and art. Mani explained that the photo realism aspect is what is most applicable to plastic

surgery. “My style is accuracy, but at the same time, when I am painting from the heart, I want to show an emotion. It stirs something in you when you see it.” In a sense, his understanding of the human form is intensified each time he brings pen—or pencil—to paper. He focuses on what he knows: human faces and bodies. “I love human beauty and capturing it is my goal.” Surgery is his “zen place.” But when it comes to art, he calls it an “obsession” or a “compulsion.” He noted that art “takes me more time because I'm so perfectionistic.” Whether with his creative process or in practice, he takes his time and the result is beautiful, subtle and flawless. Mani’s appreciation of facial anatomy and the accuracy and the artistry of doing surgery has gained him the deserved reputation of achieving results that look very natural. “It’s not for everybody; it’s definitely a personal choice. I don’t really envision a plastic world. I think we should be more real. I guess what it leads to is my overall philosophy, that plastic surgery is something that we do that should be a deception. That’s the art of it—the art of deception. It is a part of our biology. It’s a nerdy approach that I have.” His skill has brought on the development of a new treatment aimed at achieving those artistically beautiful results that Hollywood stars crave. MIST, or Minimally Invasive Stromal Transfer, involves emulsifying the fat from your own body to isolate the stem cells and inject them into the areas of concern. In other offices, Mani notes that “people are getting it from other sources like animals, but the best source is your own.” It regenerates new tissue, with a result that starts working within six months, and the effects are permanent and realistic. “You can see the patient's skin is brighter, more healthy looking and younger,” said Mani. Ultimately, it all comes down to Mani’s passion for people and the trust his patients have in his expertise. With honesty and an ethical approach that can sometimes be lost in the industry, Mani has established direct connections with his clients that will keep them coming back for more. “I think that your best potential is measured in how you help people and what you leave behind,” he said. Sounds like a stroke of genius.

Where would you go if you could leave the frenetic pace of city life behind? Could you reach paradise and attain a state of bliss in only 25, 50 or 80 minutes? Imagine a pristine world where the power of touch allows you to nourish and restore the body and mind amidst white-washed linens, intoxicating aromas and the raw and natural materials that connect us to the earth.

The NOW in Santa Monica was conceptualized to bridge the gap between luxury and affordability, while never compromising its quest to deliver a heavenly experience at a cost that makes massage and personal wellness a tangible reality. “The interiors for The NOW were inspired by [the] nature and raw, idyllic beauty of Tulum, Mexico,” states Co-Founder Gara Post. With a background in design and a dedication to wellness, it is only fitting that the space would reflect the

power of nature and its significance to relaxation. “We wanted to incorporate as much nature indoors as we could and to make each space feel divine and connected in its own way,” said Post. Clients may opt for The Journey room— the dedicated hand and foot space where one can choose to be social and chat with friends or unplug from the world, don an eye mask and float away into their happy place. For a full body massage experience, retreat to The Moment room and unwind to calming sounds and healing hands. If you choose to add in an aromatherapy oil—for only $10, why not?—it will allow for improved skin health and a passage to a world beyond the rigors of daily life. You can also add on Muscle Recovery Gel that will whisk away soreness. Whatever you choose, nirvana is within easy reach when you know exactly where to find it.

“I could instantly picture each piece placed lovingly in my home, and had to stop myself from emptying my envelope of cash I brought along for the trip.”

MY NAME IS COURTNEY HALVERSON and I am an actress living in Echo Park. I've been a fan of vintage shopping since I was a teenager, and now

that I'm a fashion and lifestyle blogger as my side hustle, I get to shop for blog stories I'm working on. One of

my favorite spots to hit up is the Melrose Trading Post, a program of the Greenway Arts Alliance. It's not as

massive as some flea markets, so it's totally manageable for a Sunday morning trip, plus it always seems to have the best vendors.

Makers and Smiths Sometimes I stumble across a booth that just gets me— and boy did this one deliver. With a massive selection of gorgeously sourced home goods like wooden spoons and speckled pottery, I could instantly picture each piece placed lovingly in my home, and had to stop myself from emptying my envelope of cash I brought along for the trip. www.makersandsmiths.com @makersandsmiths

Geometric Fossils

Single Stitch LA

Even though I've managed to kill about 40 percent of the succulents that have entered my home, I still love buying more. And all the better when they come in a cute container like the ones at Geometric Fossils. I love how artists are able to create and sell their own lines direct to the public, and these containers were crazy cute.

Chances are, if you're at the trading post, you're looking for vintage clothing. Rather than having to comb through a giant vintage store, you can instead try your hand at booths with smaller curated collections. I always love to stroll the aisles of the flea market, and when I see a faded vintage tee hanging in a booth, I make a beeline over. Yes, please!

“Who knew that succulents planted in old beer bottles could look so chic?”

Drunken Succulents No flea market trip would be complete without a stop in to see some fun kitschy works, and the display at Drunken Succulents fits the bill. Who knew that succulents planted in old beer bottles could look so chic? I had a great time combing through the selection, and finding different ones that fit people in my life. www.etsy.com/shop/ drunkensucculents @drunkensucculents

“These colorful bath bombs caught my eye at once, and I am unashamed to say that I smelled every single one.”

Koi Skin and Bath It's no secret I love baths. And while I tend to associate flea markets with all things vintage, there are often a number of booths with great homemade skincare and bath products. These colorful bath bombs caught my eye immediately, and I am unashamed to say that I smelled every single one. Who doesn't love some good pampering? www.koiskinandbath.etsy.com @koiskinandbath

Winter is Coming • When Sunday rolls around, whether it’s “Game of Thrones” or any other HBO series, Courtney loves putting on a face mask and having potstickers and wine while she watches dragons, wolves and zombies...oh my! Fuel Up • After the Melrose Trading Post, she recommends walking over to Canter's for lunch because their Matzah ball soup is to die for.

Tapestry Guru Sometimes when I spot a booth at the flea market, my first thought is, ‘How on earth did they manage to fit all of this merchandise into a van to get it here?’ This guy had a huge selection of tapestries perfect for adorning a wall, using as a bedspread or even for a fun picnic blanket. Plus, they make for a good background for photos! @tapestryguru

From A Pro • Courtney’s biggest tip is to wear a dress or a skirt so you can easily try on denim and other pieces without having to cram into a small fitting room.

Fairchild on Fairfax by John Fairchild Melrose Trading Post is home to many artists selling their work, but the spread at the Fairchild on Fairfax booth was impressive. With hundreds of large scale original works and dozens displayed around the booth and overhead, it's a great spot to hit up if you've moved recently and are hoping to decorate some blank walls in your new space.

Denim Heaven Co. Another vintage flea market staple are the denim booths. Most booths specialize entirely in denim, and have seemingly endless racks and piles of it, and Denim Heaven was fully stocked. I love love love denim, so this booth turned into a bit of a time-suck for me in the best way possible. @denimheavenco

Uncle Rush Has A New Mantra: Slow Down and Be Present WRITTEN BY: RACHEL VENSAND PHOTOGRAPHY BY: TRAVIS MCCOY

With a plethora of impressive titles like Chairman and CEO of Rush Communications, co-founder of Def Jam Records, creator of Phat Farm apparel, bestselling author and film producer on his resumé, entrepreneur Russell Simmons has two surprisingly simple secrets to success—yoga and meditation. At the core of Simmons’ financial prosperity and spiritual wellness is a devotion to veganism, sobriety and the teachings of 2,000-yearold scripture, “The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali,” which drastically helped him navigate the anxiety and insomnia that once ruled his life.

College Life

Russell Simmons founded Def Jam in 1984 with Rick Rubin, who was a college student attending NYU at the time. The duo combined a couple thousand dollars each to start the record label in Rubin’s college dormitory.

“I want people to realize that there is scientific proof that the Asana practice and the movement of the breath reverse the aging process and make you happy.” —Russell Simmons

138 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Simmons, also known as Uncle Rush, tells LOCALE, “I used to think that anxiety drove me, but it’s actually hurtful. Most people think that when they have insomnia or anxiety, it’s probably from their passion for their work— it’s not. It’s just the mind fluctuating, and when the mind fluctuates it creates sadness. A quiet mind creates happiness. And so we work for a quiet mind. Everything we do—every toy, or car or thing we buy is something we’re trying to quiet. And it doesn't work. You’ll find that nothing on the outside will make you happy; it’s a focus on presence and awareness that brings happiness.” Simmons’ devotion to a holistic practice of the yoga sutras is essential to his presence and awareness, and is, therefore, a key element to his happiness. However, Simmons’ journey to enlightenment didn’t begin with a fancy trip to Bali or an unreasonable, cold-turkey detox. His road to these profound changes began like it would for all of us, after Simmons hopped in on a yoga class with friend Bobby Shriver.

S

Simmons takes us back to his first yoga practice exclaiming, “I felt high as shit when I came out! I thought I was going to just get a workout, but I felt a presence and so at ease. I came to class for two months straight after that. I went in thinking that there were so many cute

girls there, and I never thought that I would get so addicted. I shouldn’t use the word addicted, but I was really… appreciative of the practice.” Simmons’ fateful first class inspired a sense of stillness, which was absent from his early career, while he and partner Rick Rubin were founding Def Jam Records. Understandably, signing the likes of Run D.M.C., The Beastie Boys and LL Cool J called for serious celebration. But the partying left Simmons unfulfilled, and he found himself working twice as hard for half the result. After experiencing the high of yoga, Simmons explains that cutting out drinking and drugs felt like a natural progression toward happiness. He elaborates, “Of course doing drugs, drinking alcohol and eating animal products are not good for you. When you

LOCALE MAGAZINE 139

“When you meditate in the morning, you have a clear head and an elastic state of happiness that you can work on throughout the day. And that’s better than waking up after a late night of drinking, right?” —Russell Simmons become more present, subtle things start to matter. Drugs and alcohol become less important, and happiness from purity and presence becomes your pursuit.” After taking his first class, Simmons was hooked on the pursuit of stillness. This pivotal first class was led by yoga legend Steve Ross, owner of Maha Yoga in Brentwood, and host of his own yoga show “Inhale” on the Oxygen network. His instruction left such a powerful impression on Simmons that 22 years later, Ross now teaches classes at the mogul’s boutique yoga studio—Tantrís in West Hollywood. Tantrís is a passion project for Simmons, where traditional devotion and chic modernity intertwine under the roof of the two-story, 8,000 square foot “center for yogic science.” One-half devotional chants from the Krishna Das scripture and one-half hiphop from the likes of Nas and Notorious B.I.G. comprise the soundtrack pumping through the speakers at Tantrís, where Simmons suggests that EDM has too high of BPM to work harmoniously with the practice. While Tantrís offers heated and nonheated classes, even the studio’s radiant infrared heat sets it apart from its competitors. The heat at Tantrís is meant to be restorative rather than suffocating, offering healing benefits like reducing inflammation and expelling toxins from the body. Because Tantrís combines heated practice with an emphasis on devotion and meditation, it’s different from other studios in Los Angeles which Simmons remarks “are like gyms.”

140 LOCALE MAGAZINE

The mogul imparts his Midas touch on each detail at Tantrís, where a juice bar, pH-balanced showers, alkaline water, valet parking and an Aveda concept drybar salon all cultivate a yoga experience that’s in a league of its own. These luxuries are designed to mitigate any distractions from the physical practice or the Asana and the spiritual practice of meditation, which are both essential to cultivating Simmons’ sense of presence. He elaborates on the importance of presence, saying, “When you focus on stillness, the effort [of the practice] becomes the ease and what promotes happiness and presence. So yoga is a practice that teaches you to be more present. Presence drives me. It gives me ideas and innovation and happiness. Everything comes from presence.” Written on the wall inside both studios at Tantrís is a reminder of its holistic vision, which encourages students to adhere to “devotional study, daily practice and karmic duty” in order to achieve stillness. Simmons is no exception to Tantrís’ daily practice guideline; while yoga is rarely the only thing on his to-do list, twice-aday meditation and daily practice of the Asana are non-negotiable. Simmons tells LOCALE that his personal relationships have drastically improved since making daily meditation and practice a priority. With Tantrís, Simmons raises awareness about the scientific evidence that suggests a devotion to the yoga sutras is an instruction manual for happiness.

The Big Screen

In 1985, Russell Simmons expanded Def Jam to include a film with its first picture “Krush Groove.” The film is a rap musical loosely based on Simmons’ life.

Get Money

In 1999, Russell Simmons sold his share in Def Jam to Universal Music Group for $120 million.

Common Ground

“When you become more present, subtle things start to matter.” —Russell Simmons

142 LOCALE MAGAZINE

In 2002, Russell Simmons was appointed chairman of the board for the Foundation of Ethnic Understanding, an organization which focuses on improving relations between the black community and Jewish citizens and relationships between Muslim and Jewish individuals.

“When you focus on stillness, the effort [of the practice] becomes the ease and what promotes happiness and presence.” —Russell Simmons

He elaborates, “We have scientific proof that meditation and yoga ward off cancer and alleviate anxiety that is causing sickness in the body. I want people to realize that there is scientific proof that the Asana practice and the movement of the breath reverse the aging process and make you happy.” At Tantrís, the physical practice of the Asana goes hand in hand with the calculated breathing of meditation, which instructors lead students through at the beginning and end of each class. Meditation provides for the stillness and presence that allows Simmons to enjoy spiritual wealth, which he explains in his book “Super Rich: A Guide To Having It All” as essential to cultivate before enjoying monetary wealth. In his most recent book, “Success Through Stillness,” Simmons dives deeper into the connection between meditation and spiritual wealth, finding it equally as important to presence as karmic work and physical practice of the Asana poses. He elaborates, “When you meditate in the morning, you have a clear head and an elastic state of happiness that you can work on throughout the day. And that’s better than waking up after a late night of drinking, right?” Simmons expands his multi-million dollar empire by practicing transcendental meditation, a mantra-based practice taught to him by visionary Bob Roth. The yoga guru’s teachings, influenced largely by what the Maharishi taught, have had a direct impact on one of Tantrís’ vision to demystify the falsehood that meditation is an unattainable, impractical stress reliever. Roth is the current CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, which brings the wonders of meditation to veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress

disorder, survivors of domestic violence and over 500,000 at risk youth in over 35 countries around the world. While Simmons sits on the David Lynch Foundation’s board, this is merely one of his numerous philanthropic endeavors, which complete his circle of yogic practice through karmic duty. Simmons extends the sense of community at Tantrís to the rest of the world via his support of numerous charities including PETA, the AIDS charity (RED) and U.S. Doctors for Africa. His devotion to karmic duty has led Simmons to spearhead his own philanthropies, including the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, Foundation for Ethnic Understanding and Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation. As of late, the mogul has also donated over 150,000 water bottles to the ongoing crisis in Flint, Michigan and attended town hall meetings. Simmons and the Tantrís team frequently host classes with a karmic conscience, choosing environmental, political and social causes to support in tandem with the practice of yoga. 2017 has seen an ongoing partnership with yoga instructor and activist Seane Corn’s “Off The Mat Into The World” organization, and a celebration of Earth Day to support WeTap.org, among countless more which promote a sense of worldly community beyond the walls of Tantrís. By living and breathing Tantrís’ mission, to exercise “devotional study, daily practice and karmic duty” in his everyday life, Simmons takes the high road to spiritual and financial success. So each time you hesitate to try something new, remember that Russell Simmons’ ability to abolish fear and live in the present began on a random day with just a yoga mat and an open mind.

ELI WEHBE CREDENT IA L S : PART N E R AT WAR W I CK

Eli Wehbe is a well-versed nightlife entrepreneur, and has now taken on the role of partner for Warwick. A special and sincere sense of hospitality and unique club atmosphere is what Eli and his partners have created at Warwick, and clearly his passions have paid off. He’s the perfect example of taking your natural gifts and using them to pursue a career path that you love. Q: What has been your greatest strength in creative and business endeavors? Eli Wehbe: I think my biggest strength is being a people person; it’s a naturalborn gift. I stick to my own personal vision and take so much pride in that. I can’t say it enough, focus on your vision—that speaks for itself. Q: Where did you draw your inspiration from for the design of Warwick, the idea

in general as well as the interior decor and setup? EW: Sylvain, David, JT and myself wanted to create a meticulously designed and curated space that is refined and exclusive, yet also comfortable and unpretentious. The space was designed to be easily reconfigured for a wide variety of events ranging from charity galas to concerts and movie premiere after parties. Warwick’s design aesthetic blends old and new materials and design styles in order to create a sense of timelessness and unpredictability. Q: What did you want to be when you were younger? EW: Initially, I wanted to be a firefighter, but quickly realized I wanted to work with people in a different way. Ultimately, I ended up working for a nightclub close to my hometown and realized that I was born with a gift to be a generally accommodating person. Naturally, I had a sense of hospitality and I ended up having a vision to do something in the nightlife space, which is what brought everything full-circle. Q: What drink do you order to relieve some stress? EW: I don’t really drink on the job; however, if I were to come in as a guest, my definite recommendation would be the Moscow Mule. The mixology program at Warwick is super refined and is sure to impress. You will never be disappointed!

COLIN T. MCCARTHY CREDENTIALS: CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND VP, ROGUE COLLECTIVE

Colin T. McCarthy is the Creative Director and Vice President of Rogue Collective, a brick & mortar and online experience focused on premium, ethically produced products and well-made lifestyle goods, now with a flagship store in Downtown LA's Arts District. He might not be an LA native, but he brings his bold and original New York style with him to the West Coast through his clothing and design. Colin grew up with a passion for the arts, but was unsure of his true medium—that all changed when he discovered his interest in fashion and channeled that passion into creating designs of his own at Rogue Collective. Q: How did you get started as a creative director? Colin T. McCarthy: I’ve always wanted to create because I grew up in a very artistic house. It wasn’t until I moved to [New York City] right out of college that I really identified the fashion world as where I wanted to be. I had always really, really loved the art of branding, fashion and personal style, but didn’t yet fully understand that passion. Spending many years on the creative side of opening and running restaurants, as well as boutique shopping locations, I picked up skills that serve me well on a daily basis.

Q: What did you want to be when you were younger? Do you think your previous interests influenced your career path? CM: I would say yes, but indirectly. Like most of us, I’m still searching for ‘what I want to do,’ to be honest. That said, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have an opportunity like this to do something I truly love. When you have that kind of love for what you do, it never really feels like work and it makes the long hours much, much easier. I throw myself at a project and don’t come up for air until I absolutely have to. Q: What is your favorite thing about what you do? CM: Having the opportunity to talk about clothes and business models all day is a dream come true. Two of my favorite subjects on earth. In the ‘discovery’ phase of concept creation, ideas are very lucid and evolved tremendously over a very short period of time. Having a hand in these conversations is priceless. Q: If you hadn't gone into business and weren’t a creative director, what would you be doing? CM: Honestly, I have no idea. In both [New York City] and LA I’ve been in and out of the fashion and restaurant worlds. The restaurant industry is another that I respect immensely, but Rogue Collective is my heart and soul. This is where my passions [lie] and that drives me [to] push harder each and every day to help this concept take flight. If I had to choose though, commercial real estate and the restaurant business are both fields I’ve considered in the past.

Imagine a world where we didn’t constantly cut each other down and belittle each other,” he said.

DEVIN LUCIEN CRE D E N TI AL S: DJ AN D PRO D U CE R

Devin Lucien is an extremely talented LA producer and DJ known for playing some of the most exclusive and exciting locales. He has had a passion for music since he was young, and found his soul instrument the first time he touched a turntable. His individual style and talent have only grown since then, and he has grown into one of the most sought-after DJs in the business. Q: What inspired you to become a DJ? Did your love for music start at a young age? Devin Lucien: I was always a huge music fan. I grew up during the beginning of the MTV music video era, so my parents would just make VHS tapes of the music videos and put them on to keep me busy for hours. They also had a vast record collection. I loved Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna when I was very young. Then, of course, I was a huge 2pac, Dre and Snoop fan as I got a little older. Being exposed to all that really shaped the way I listen to music even to this day.

Q: What advice would you give to someone following their passions? DL: My advice to anyone following their passion in music is never stop working and take any gig you can at first. Never think that any gig is below you until you've reached a place that you consider success. The key is to put in those 10,000 hours and you can do anything you want.

Q: What has been the biggest challenge you have faced when pursuing your passions? DL: Finding a balance between playing what people want and expect to hear at a club and what I think they should be listening to. I grew up truly loving music and nothing makes me feel the way I do when I hear a new song that moves me. The challenge is finding a way to expose them to new music while giving them the hits they want to keep them interested. Q: How has your career of DJing changed throughout the years? DL: My career has changed a lot throughout the years. The gigs have gotten bigger. The clients and brands I work for have gotten bigger. I've had the opportunity to work for artists, musicians, athletes and politicians that I really respect. That is the biggest trip of it all. You see these people that have shaped your creative energy through the years, and here they are requesting that you entertain them.
