121 Gift Guide
THAT’S A WRAP!
®
EDITOR'S NOTE The holiday season is here and admittedly, it’s my favorite time of the year. Sometimes, I’m with my mom’s family making my grandma’s famous homemade mashed potatoes, and other years I’m hanging out with my dad’s family, hoping I end up with the best gift from the white elephant gift exchange. Although how I spend the holidays changes from year to year, it still feels perfect because I’ve come to realize it’s more about what you do with where you’re at, who you’re with and what you have. I hope this issue inspires you to come to the same realization for your own holiday season. Flip the pages and take a lesson from our six Escape Experts (pg. 41) who really know how to turn places into head-turning spaces. Whether it’s how to make a centerpieceworthy floral bouquet or transforming your nursery into the must-see room of the house, you can learn it all. Expecting your holiday to be Griswald-like? Our Escape Guide (pg. 47) has the perfect list of what to eat, see and do to keep the
family happy. Hint: we even listed the best places to stay so you don’t have to bunk with your brother. Our cover star, Lauren Bosworth, is the epitome of how to make a name for yourself. This woman is all about making moves and after reading her story, (pg. 110) you will be inspired to channel your inner #girlboss and do the same. No more overdone family recipes. It’s possible to put a twist on a traditional meal that will leave everyone happy, even the one who invented the recipe. Don’t trust me? Take it from Chef Arthur Gonzales in our Meals Deconstructed (pg. 100). When it’s time to shop, flip to our Gift Guide (pg. 121). We literally laid out what you can get every person in your life whether they are the “I’m happy with whatever you get me!” type or the person with exclusive, expensive taste. No matter how you spend your holiday, I hope you make it memorable—after all, the best place to be is exactly where you’re at.

Lauren Bosworth is a pro in front of the camera, even if she doesn’t think so. “I’m not a model, I don’t know how to make this look natural,” she laughed as photographer Travis McCoy snapped away on the patio of Gracias Madre, our set for the LA November cover story. She may not be a model, but Bosworth’s natural golden glow made every shot look like second-nature, as if she’d been doing this her whole life.
L
In a way, she has. Since her start on “Laguna Beach” in high school, Bosworth was propelled into the entertainment industry and in front of the camera. Still, her humble hesitancy reflected what we’ve all come to love about Lauren: her down-to-earth vibes that make her feel more like a friend you’ve known for years than a cover star you only met a couple hours before. “Lo was so personable and engaging from the minute she walked on set,” said hair and makeup artist, Chelsea Gehr, who kept Bosworth’s makeup natural with warm tones to complement her features. “She knows what she likes and that is all in the confidence she carries herself with—all the qualities of a true role model and business woman.”
Bosworth’s eagerness to be part of the creative process was a highlight for everyone on set. Wardrobe stylist Kaylee Jackson brought a vibrant selection of fall finds that Bosworth immediately snapped to post on her Instagram story. “Lo was hands-on during the entire shoot with helping to select the clothing and accessories for each look,” Jackson said. “It let her personal style shine through.” With gorgeous shades of yellow, orange and pink, Bosworth made Gracias Madre’s already-beautiful monochrome backsplashes and brick walls come to life. “Lo can seriously rock any color,” Jackson continued. “I wanted each look to have a colorful, effortless California vibe, and she definitely nailed it!” This was evident with every one of McCoy’s shots, even the testers. With his keen eye for photography, McCoy captured Bosworth’s refreshing and confident energy in every look. “Lo was amazing to photograph,” McCoy said. “She brought so much fun energy to the shoot.” That energy lasted throughout, from an early 7 a.m. call time to when the shoot ended four and a half hours later. Then, she was off to meetings for the rest of the day, channeling the #girlboss attitude that makes her the perfect cover star for our November issue.

It doesn’t take much to find inspiration in a city that’s full of dreamers like Los Angeles, but no one, even the most clever of the creative bunch, is completely immune to the occasional bout of stagnation. From a breakup that ignited a love of welding to the magic behind the nurseries of some of Hollywood’s most anticipated babies, we chatted with six of the city’s experts—designers, artists, CEOs and hoteliers alike—about what they love most about their enviable professions, and how they keep the passion alive.

The MAN WITH A PLAN
RICK GLUTH
Credentials: General Manager, Hotel Angeleno GREAT EXPECTATIONS • The upcoming lobby renovation will be focused on creating an environment where guests want to hang out, work and socialize in a setting that will give you the feeling of being a true Angeleno.
SHAPE-SHIFTING • “Our ‘We’re Not Square’ culture is not just our tagline, it has a literal connection (the building is cylindrical in shape) and figuratively it’s our approach to how we want to deliver our guest experience.”
GLUTH’S PHILOSOPHY • “Be authentic, genuine, consistent and pay close attention to the details.”
For Hotel Angeleno General Manager Rick Gluth, an after-school job working in a hotel as a means to escort his girlfriend to prom turned into a career. Stepping in nearly nine years ago for the redesign of Hotel Angeleno, Gluth made it his mission to provide outstanding customer service. “We are always thinking of new ways to differentiate Hotel Angeleno from the pack and keep our service delivery fresh.” With stunning 360-degree views of LA, this hotel makes for a perfect stay. “We live and work in a great city for inspiration. There is a great deal of new supply and renovations that enables us to evolve the design and refine our guest experience.”
The DESIGNER
NICOLE CASWELL Credentials: Design Consultant, California Closets INTERNATIONAL INSPIRATION • “I try to go to places like Paris, the South of France and Italy, where I’m able to study and enjoy food, music, colors and architecture at every step. Design is not only something you see, it is felt.”
CLOSET HACKS • “Change out your closet seasonally and store items in bins or storage spaces. It is also fun to unpack bins and be surprised to see what you have!”
California Closets was an easy choice for design consultant, Nicole Caswell. Starting her career as a florist, Caswell moved to Italy to marry her husband (couple goals!) and studied architecture and design for three years before moving back to the States. With a knack for spatial creativity, Caswell finds her passion in designing a personal oasis for her clients.“What I love most about my job is that it is never the same from day to day,” Caswell said. Now with 20 years of design experience under her belt, she’s dishing on her dream closet design and sharing her top tricks to help us all stay organized. 42 LOCALE MAGAZINE
FAVORITE PROJECT • An acquaintance needed an organized and functional space for her family. “After a year, almost every room...had a California Closets system. I felt immense gratification knowing I played such a large part in helping improve their home.”

The ENTREPRENEUR
ARIEL KAYE
Credentials: Founder and CEO, Parachute FIND IT OUTDOORS • “I’m always inspired by the outdoors and the casual beauty of the Southern California landscape. Bike riding, sunset yoga or a quick walk to the beach always boosts my creativity.”
ALWAYS WELCOME • “My goal is to always design welcoming spaces. My home is full of items that create a cozy and relaxing environment—oversize pillows, throws, a gallery wall full of personal photos and artwork.” MIX ‘N’ MATCH • “Today, people are designing their interiors as a whole, not room by room. I like when pieces can be mixed, matched and layered across all rooms.”
For Ariel Kaye, Founder and CEO of modern bedding brand, Parachute, a trip to Italy changed everything. While staying at a boutique hotel on the Amalfi Coast, Kaye fell head over heels for her sumptuous sheets and began a quest to find a similar set back home. Seeing a gap in the bedding market, Kaye put her 10 years of brand development experience to work and created her line of high-quality home essentials, designed in signature soft tones to combine comfort with luxury. “Starting a business is the wildest ride imaginable,” said Kaye. “Becoming a founder has been a completely transformative experience—and I love it!”
GAGA DESIGNS 818.366.8787 www.shalenasmith.com Photoshoot Location: PORTER RANCH, CA
The NURSERY DESIGNER
SHALENA SMITH Credentials: Founder, GaGa Designs
INSPIRATIONAL MOMS • “I look to my clients as my resource. Most of them are already in a creative industry so it’s about translating their ideas in a way that’s decorative and tells their story.”
ON TREND • “Creating unique accent walls are my favorite right now! From wood paneling and molding to wallpaper and murals, I can’t get enough!”
For preparation for a new baby, GaGa Designs has everything covered. “Most parents don’t think of baby safety from a crawling perspective, so I’ll literally crawl around the room on the floor to see what [babies] see,” said Founder of GaGa Designs, Shalena Smith. Gaga’s services help new parents with everything from designing an elegant nursery, stocked with top-of-the-line decor, to arranging for pediatricians and doulas. After a chance encounter led her to her first high-profile client, Wayne Brady’s wife, word got out and today, the devoted mom of two counts the tots of big-time celebs like Mariah Carey and Tamera Mowry among her faithful clients.
FAVORITE PROJECT • “Sean [P. Diddy] Combs’ nursery for his twins [with Kim Porter in 2006]. It was the entire west wing of the house. How could you not enjoy decorating a space that big?”

The FLORIST
SPENCER FALLS Credentials: Founder, The Unlikely Florist TAKE A LOOK AROUND • “I’ll look to the space for inspiration. I'm inspired by my surroundings so I'm always curious what I could create in a particular space that I couldn't create anywhere else.”
FLOWER POWER • Spencer’s favorite? The Protea—a flower that has around 1,600 species!
FAVORITE PROJECT • “I made a flower room in San Francisco at the beginning of the year. It was pretty sick to conceive such a thing, and then to realize the idea.”
A lot can change in two and a half years. For Spencer Falls, The Unlikely Florist, creating a business out of selling flowers from a van seemed, well, unlikely. “I had no idea that I was starting a business,” Falls said. “I needed to make a living, had a van and knew there was this street called Abbot Kinney that was crawling with people.” Not your typical dozen of roses, Falls’ unique selection is unlikely as well. Incorporating a surprising variety of lesser-known stems to create artisanal bouquets and transform event spaces, Falls puts his own stamp on the floral market.
The WELDER
MEYGHAN HILL Credentials: Founder, (wh)ORE HAüS Studios DREAM PROJECT • “I would love to explore the idea of a boutique hotel where each room is themed… so I can design the furniture and bring in an amazing band of misfits I’ve found in the maker community.”
ENDLESS INSPIRATION • “I tend to fall in love with a material, and like anyone with a crush—I see it everywhere. I also am hugely driven by fashion, and I am a voracious reader.”
Breaking up is hard to do, but it opened the floodgates of creativity for Meyghan Hill, Founder of (wh)ORE HAüS Studios. To channel her emotions, the former model began to literally rebuild her life in the form of handmade furniture before throwing herself into the craft of welding. “[As a female welder], I feel grateful I live in a society that allows me to just be a welder...I was pleasantly surprised at how feminine I found the trade to be.” Studying under a group of auto mechanics, Hill cut her teeth on discarded scrap metal before ultimately merging her new skill with her love of craftsmanship. 44 LOCALE MAGAZINE
ALL TIME FAVORITE • This piece makes for fun and interesting parties at her studio—a Ouija Board! “The asymmetrical base is one of my favorites…I decided to have a Ouija Board pattern laser-burned into the stone and built a brass planchette.”

Local Chefs Show Off Their Take on Seasonal Ingredients
Chefs in California are lucky to have bountiful produce year-round, but this fall, these four chefs are focusing on the best of the season’s harvest: sweet potato and squash. Locals and travelers revel in the bountiful farm-fresh and seasonal ingredients chefs prepare in Los Angeles, and we reached out to some of the city’s very best to see what they have cooking in their kitchens. Creating a dish with their own unique twist, Chefs Lunetta and Dreux Ellis accepted the challenge of a dish centered around squash while Chefs Gonzalez and Aliaga tackled the sweet potato.

find an awe-inspiring design that matches the glory of Chef Ray Garcia’s tantalizing dishes. “When we design, it’s directly related to what the chef will be cooking. It hits the notes and tone of what’s happening on the plate,” says Jason St. John of Bells + Whistles interior design firm, who, alongside Co-Founder Barbara Rourke, formulated the concept behind the interior. “We wanted it
to feel like it was someone’s home. It’s more authentic than just, ‘Oh, this is what Mexican restaurants are: chips, salsa and sombreros.’” St. John and Rourke crafted their vision by calling on motifs rooted in Mexico’s rich and legendary history. For the back patio dining area, the designers created the illusion of the outdoors by constructing a wooden pergola engulfed in a canopy of lights and leaves.

Bold colors, serapepatterned pillows and handpainted pottery make the rest of the interior flow seamlessly. Look up and you’ll find a collection of molinillos, traditional wooden whisks used to make hot chocolate, hanging from the ceiling. Each molinillo features
its own star-like pattern, creating an unusual element when combined all together. “For most of our projects, we tend to use black and white or more natural color palettes, so it was a fun experience for us to really go for it with vibrant colors,” says Rourke. “It’s an homage to the spirit of Mexico.”

There’s nothing more important than taking care of our health. With health-consciousness at an all-time high, there’s been an upswing of positive changes brought about by yoga, meditation and physical wellness practices. But Sara Cullen, CEO and founder of GEM, has made it her mission to change the way we talk, and think, about vitamins. Cullen is one of the masterminds creating better ways to live a healthy lifestyle with her femalefocused vitamin brand, which is shaking up the vitamin industry with a new shape, transparent ingredients and real food.

GEM started in 2017 when Cullen was going through her own intense health journey which included breakouts, inflammation, testing out new diets, months of allergy tests and, eventually, taking vitamins—all of which were unsuccessful in relieving her ailments. But, the lack of a solution sparked the idea to start her own entrepreneurial journey. “I had always been a skeptic of vitamins, but [after] learning I had been deficient in key nutrients I turned to supplementation to help fill the gaps in my diet,” said Cullen. This turn to vitamins led her to be shocked at how unregulated the vitamin industry was—full of artificial, synthetic, over90 LOCALE MAGAZINE

processed, mislabeled junk—and motivated her to propose an empowering, transparent solution. “I couldn’t find anything I trusted, so I decided to build my own,” stated Cullen. “My obsession led me to figure out ways in which we can better diversify and complete our nutrition with real food in cleaner, more delicious ways.” Forty prototypes later, GEM was born. They chose a name that would evoke what the brand is at its core—a gem. Cullen followed her passion for women’s health and nutrition to make supplements that aren’t branded as diet pills or a way to get skinny, but rather a way to better nourish the body. “Women have different anatomies than men,” said Cullen, “We need different things. We need to nourish ourselves differently.” GEM vitamins are here to create a supplement that raises women up, instead of beat them down. Cullen added, “A healthier, more empowered womankind is better for everyone.” GEM is completely transparent with their ingredients and, unlike other supplements on the market, they are regulated by the FDA, “because we’re real food,” emphasized Cullen. “Women always know what they’re putting in their bodies when they take GEM,” she added.
A lot of products brag about how they stand out from the rest, but GEM sets itself apart from the wave of traditional and unregulated supplements from the very moment you open the container. You won’t find the familiar capsules or gummies you’ve taken in the past. Instead, you’ll find a cube of 100 percent real food, real nutrition and real health. “I hope by seeing vitamins in a different format they not only question what a vitamin should look like, but what they’re made of, where they come from and how they’re built,” said Cullen. GEM has come a long way from launching their first of 40 prototypes. What’s new in GEM vitamins’ journey? They just launched their 30-day monthly subscription packs in September with two flavors—peppermint and lemon, and are constantly brewing up new ideas. They’re a brand to watch for many reasons: their passion for improving and nourishing women’s lives, their trailblazing efforts in creating a real and true vitamin, and, of course, their fearless leader, Sara Cullen.

—CHEF ARTHUR GONZALES
As a first generation
A
American, Chef Arthur Gonzales is making his mark in the restaurant world through combining his German heritage with his Oaxacan roots to create his very own brand
of food that is authentically inauthentic in fusion. Born and raised in Southern California, Chef Arthur’s introduction to gastronomy took place in his childhood kitchen where his grandmother artfully crafted a symphony of sabores (Spanish for “flavors”) each and every night. It was here that Chef realized his affinity for food was much more than just an interest. “I felt like I had a story to tell,” he said. And thus his journey began.
After an injury left him sidelined at his firefighter job, Gonzales decided to enter the wild world of restaurant work. As the story goes, he started as a dishwasher and slowly worked his way up, taking advantage of any extra work he could get his hands on to prove himself worthy of the big leagues. He educated himself through experience, soaking up any advice he received like beer to a borracho bean. “Every chef finds their place in the kitchen, whether you’re a sous chef, a banquet chef [or] an executive chef,” Gonzales said. “Find your niche, find what really gets you motivated and you just go after that.” He did. And Chef Gonzales’ culinary quest led him to critically-acclaimed chef, Eric Distefano. The two became fast friends culminating in Gonzales being named chef de cuisine at Distefano’s successful New Mexico restaurant, Geronimo. The Santa Fe way of life seared itself into Chef Gonzales’ soul, and its culture inspired him on a personal and professional level. Eventually, Chef’s appetite for autonomy was sated with the opening of his restaurant Panxa in 2015. When you walk into Panxa (pronounced pawn-zah), you are transported to a whimsical world of war horses, wildly creative dishes—like the Stacked Enchiladas—and a window into Chef Gonzales’ mind. The name Panxa, which is Catalan for belly, provides that additional x-factor (literally and figuratively). “We were all just sitting around one day and someone asked the question ‘How do you want your food to affect people?’” said Gonzales. “The first thing it affects is their belly—and it just kind of evolved from there. There’s a huge Spanish influence in the Southwest so I looked up the definition and thought it fit.” The menu at Panxa is a mezcla or mixture of mixtos tequila and moles and margaritas—oh my! When it comes to creating a dish, Chef Gonzales is always changing, experimenting and improving.
To him, the evolution of a dish is never complete. When it comes to creating the perfect paradox of a simple yet complex dish, there is no better example on the menu than the Stacked Enchiladas. This is a dish that embodies the essence of Gonzales with each layer of flavor another chapter to his story. “This dish is my interpretation [of a classic] with my own influences,” explained Gonzales. The dish, served a la carte, combines impossiblytender, eight-hour braised short rib perched on tortillas made in-house and then stacked, almost like a New Mexico version of a Napoleon. Each layer is delicately dusted with cotija, a Parmesanlike cheese that gives the dish an unmistakable umami, and a confetti of queso Oaxaca. The stack comes swimming in a red and green sauce mirroring the Mexican flag as a subtle ode to its roots. The tasty tower is topped with a sunny-side up egg and a sprinkling of cilantro. “I added these enchiladas to the menu because I wanted to highlight some of the wonderful New Mexican dishes and flavors that I fell in love with while living in New Mexico, while also featuring a dish that Californians could relate to,” he explained. “As a chef, I want to touch every palate on your tongue, every taste bud.” In Chef Gonzales’ cooking, there are no shortcuts, no cheat codes. Each dish at Panxa embodies time, balance and purpose. Even the decor is deliberate with its nod to the culture of New Mexico. From the turquoise accent wall to the aprons that pay homage to the adobe homes of Santa Fe, Panxa is the definition of soigné. “For me, being here in California, I wanted to bring chef-driven food. I didn’t want to have tablecloths; I didn’t want it to be so formal,” Gonzales said. “I want people to feel like they’re in my house, but they’re getting a meal from a badass chef.” Well done, chef, well done. Gasparian first entered the scene as a YouTube sensation, whose fan-favorite videos paved the way for her own lifestyle brand and line of cosmetics, Pérsona Cosmetics. With over 10 years as a professional makeup artist under her belt, she took to social media to share her vast beauty wisdom on a platform with great potential. "After discovering YouTube, I realized that I could bring my knowledge and love of the makeup world to a much larger audience through blogging and social media," Gasparian shares.

With a combined social media following of one million, her digital success is undebatable. Upon Pérsona's unveiling, the makeup artist and beauty blogger was able share her love of cosmetics with her audience in a more interactive way. However, as Gasparian can attest, becoming a public figure comes with certain burdens. "It's a lot of responsibility knowing young girls follow and look up to me, so I try and be extra careful with what I post or say," she says. "But of course, it is also very exciting to know that I am empowering girls to go after their dreams." Gasparian's success makes her a trailblazer in the beauty industry, especially in the Inclusive Beauty movement. As the mainstream media has been criticized for historically overlooking women of mediumskin tones, Gasparian works with some of the industries biggest names—Clarins, Estée Lauder and Neutrogena—to encourage and show women how to highlight their natural beauty with products that
are affordable and inclusive. Not only is Gasparian collaborating for change, but she’s also creating it as well, managing to develop eye kits, eyeshadow palettes, liquid lipsticks and highlighters that complement a range of skin tones. Founding Pérsona Cosmetics is a milestone in her career. The success of launching her own makeup line didn’t come quick or easy. Ever since she was a little girl watching her mom work in a salon, Gasparian was inspired to be a part of the beauty industry. Getting to this point in her career has involved a great deal of hard work, from studying at Makeup Designory (MUD) and working at MAC Cosmetics in the earlier stages of her journey to rapport-building with her audience and creating a community among her followers. "A huge factor in the blogging world is trust,” says Gasparian. “Starting my own brand was always a goal for me, so once I felt that I had a stable community of followers that trusted me and believed in what I was doing, I knew it was time to make that goal a reality. And so, Pérsona was born!"
The line's first season consisted of some of the cosmetic industry’s most popular products: three matte shades of liquid lipstick, 12 hues of eye pigment—both matte and shimmering—in a compact palette and three different tints of millennial-adored highlighters. The line's popularity (highlighter sales are limited to three per customer) is a likely indication of the greatness to come. Meanwhile, each of her products is infused with her personal taste and vast knowledge of makeup. Each of her beach-themed highlighters bears a special significance to the bubbly California woman. "I love the beach and that glow you get after spending a few hours under the Cali sun," Gasparian says. "I wanted to replicate that glow with my highlighter collection. As far as shade names, each of these beaches [Laguna, Zuma and Del Mar] are very near and dear to me. I have such beautiful memories soaking up the sun and relaxing on these beaches!" Pérsona Cosmetics demonstrates Gasparian’s ability to attune to the industry's beauty trends. From shimmering highlighters perfect for accentuating cheekbones to musthave matte lipstick and eye pigments picked for complementing brown eyes, Gasparian’s makeup line successfully taps into cruelty-free and ethical cosmetics, two themes that are shaping the contemporary beauty market and aiding the industry’s emerging push for the future of cosmetics. Now a seasoned boss lady, Gasparian continues to be thrilled by the process. "Aside from launching the brand, all the positive feedback has been the most exciting part for me," she says. "It's always so nerve-wracking to hear what people think of your product, especially with the world of social media. But every comment, story, direct message and review is always so exciting and makes the whole process worth it."
Sona’s Skincare Routine STEP

The opportunity to provide feedback should be the green light to give Pérsona Cosmetics a try. When else will we have the opportunity to influence the future of the brands we love? Gasparian welcomes everyone, whether they’re a makeup pro and new to the cosmetic world, to try her products with video tutorials about how to use Pérsona Cosmetics to “get the look” whether it be an everyday look or a dramatic smokey-eye for a night out. "We have some very exciting new developments for Pérsona Cosmetics in 2018 and 2019," she says. As for the future of Pérsona Cosmetics, Gasparian leaves us with the promise of more to come, and we’re ready for it—clean makeup brushes, new beauty blenders and all.

Lauren Bosworth has been a little busy these days. With reality TV far behind her, the SoCal native has been able to focus her energy on building businesses around one of her most treasured values: championing women. Now with a successful female wellness company, a podcast she co-hosts with her two besties and a thriving blog to her name, Bosworth fosters an empowered community with the spirited passion she’d always planned to bring into the world. You may think you know all there is to know about Lauren Bosworth, but the 32-year-old boss babe is only getting started. Although Bosworth’s entrepreneurial ventures are less than four years old, her keen intuition with business speaks to a drive she’s had since high school. “I’ve always been interested in being an entrepreneur, and using my voice has always felt second nature to me,” Bosworth said. “But one day when I was still in high school it really clicked for me that I wanted to be a positive force in my own life, and as a daughter, sister and friend. Since I had this platform, I wanted to be able to use it for something good.”
A
In fact, Bosworth may have been one of the first from those early days of reality TV to use her platform for a greater purpose. In 2009, when “The Hills” was still airing and Bosworth was already an MTV household name, she launched her blog, The Lo Down, with a few of her friends. It began as a place for newsworthy content, with articles written by her peers studying journalism. Over time, the blog shifted to a more lifestyle-focused beat based on how she saw the world around her. But it also lent a helping hand in deciding what was going to hold weight in her life. “I was still on television when I had the realization that it was not the path for me,” she said. “I strongly disliked not being able to have a say in my own narrative. So when the show was coming to an end, I made the decision to take back control of my destiny.” A decision that set her on the path to where she is now, as an outspoken, yet humble ally in empowering women. First, through co-hosting the podcast Lady Lovin’ with her two friends Jilly Hendrix and Greta Titelman, where they share their advice and experiences in love, career and personal growth.
Then, through Love Wellness, where she continues her role as founder and CEO of the company. Love Wellness, which offers women natural, safe and doctor-recommended personal care products, came about for Bosworth after a period of chronic health issues. Frustrated with products on the market that were doing more harm than good, she began her own research into the industry. “A lot of traditional feminine hygiene brands are actually full of chemicals that are distressing for the female microbiome,” she said. “I realized there was a huge space and category for a new company to try to change the self-care culture and discussion.” And it has. Love Wellness’ brand has challenged the industry by bringing products like pH-balancing cleansers, vaginal health kits and skin-care vitamins to the table with bright, colorful packaging and a clear dialogue on the ingredients they use. They’re the kind of products that you want to reach for in the morning and products that you don’t feel embarrassed about having in your medicine cabinet. For Bosworth, that was no mistake. “The onus is really on brands and consumers to both create and demand better products,” she said. “I’m very passionate about giving women a new experience in this category because frankly, we deserve it.” But what makes Bosworth so successful in business is her sincere interest in helping all women, not just those that already embrace their bodies openly. “I’m acutely aware that not everyone is ready to adopt the language and culture we’re trying to create, and that’s okay,” Bosworth said. “We’re not trying to force or pressure anybody. We want to be here for the women looking for a brand that represents who they are without fear, whenever they’re ready to do that.”

• Bosworth’s love for tacos— specifically ones from Baja Fish Tacos— had her joking about opening her own taco stand one day.

“I want to maximize the time that I have on this earth and do good with that time.” —Lauren Bosworth lead the charge of their own life,” she said. “I think I know more women that own businesses than not, at this point.”
With that mindset, it’s no surprise why Bosworth has hit her stride. Still, even she is no stranger to the self-doubt and criticism that many women can experience in their careers. Though she’s worked hard to launch her business, she can’t help but consider her position as a stroke of luck. “Anyone with the right message and basic set of skills can use their voice to change the world. Ten years ago, that wasn’t the case; you had to get lucky and land on a TV show like I did. Literally, I got lucky,” Bosworth said. And while her time in the entertainment industry often portrayed her in a light that made her feel uncomfortable, Bosworth said, “I very much know that I’m in the position I am today because I was granted that opportunity.”
Female empowerment is popular these days. In most cases as a way of life, a value that companies and influencers use their platforms to promote and discuss within their communities. But in others, female empowerment can be used as a phrase, something to tack onto products or content as a way for a company to remain relevant. The meaning can get muddled. But without a doubt, Bosworth’s mission to champion other women is something she comes by naturally. Whether it’s through sharing her advice on Lady Lovin’ or creating new products for Love Wellness, Bosworth doesn’t just talk about female empowerment; she authentically rallies for it in every part of her life.
She may be right. And it would be easy to attribute her achievements to the luck of landing on a television show. But by doing so, you ignore Bosworth’s obvious, natural knack for business. When she first launched Love Wellness, she ran the company on her own for 18 months. “Everything from conception to design and execution fell on my shoulders,” she said.
“The more women [who] take the risk to start a business continue to inspire those around them,” Bosworth said. “Women are no longer satisfied with the general 9-to-5 anymore. There’s been a huge awakening that we can do it, that the only person stopping you is yourself.”
Not only did this prepare Bosworth for when she was eventually ready to hire, but it also affected her view of every part of the process. From the creative side to the operational and administrative, Bosworth has a tenacious drive that fuels every move she makes. It’s not luck that’s propelled Bosworth to where she is now. It’s her intuitive nature, her unmatched work ethic—her very own, innate qualities that have carried her all the way to the top. And a group of irreplaceable friends. “So many of my friends are business owners making their own mark, and it’s inspiring to see that,” Bosworth said, “Everyone is so successful in their own right, and we’ve still been able to maintain positive friendships with each other.” Now in their early 30s, Bosworth and her closeknit group of friends have “gotten over the hump” of heartbreak, loss and change that comes with transitioning from your 20s to your 30s. It’s a period of time that Bosworth admitted can be difficult, but saw every hardship or setback as a chance to better herself. “It’s a compounding effect really, because I know so many people now who’ve made the decision to
And as for herself? Bosworth is still fueled by the simple promise she made as a 16-year-old in high school. “I want to maximize the time that I have on this earth and do good with that time. Whether it’s empowering women through business, being a thoughtful friend, daughter and sister, or trying to do my part to take care of the earth we live on,” Bosworth said. “I’m fortunate to have the lifestyle I lead. I have the ability to start a business, to speak to millions of people, and most people don’t have that chance. I’m trying to take advantage of that opportunity for the betterment of everyone, not just myself.” Turning her dreams into actions and making big changes in her life, like packing up and moving to New York City in 2012, has come with many challenges. But Bosworth has always looked at each big decision as a chance to grow, even if it feels a little scary in the moment. “One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that nothing is permanent, we’re constantly evolving,” she said. “I’m looking forward to what’s coming next, understanding that half of the adventure is not knowing what that is just yet.”

There is no better company than that of a furry, four-legged friend. As man’s best friend, dogs provide a significant companionship that many are unaware they need, and only a few are rewarded with. For Lori Weise, founder and president of Downtown Dog Rescue, those who need dogs the most are the sole reason she founded the shelter in 1996. With the help of dedicated volunteers, Weise works endlessly to provide lowincome Los Angeles pet owners and dogs with the attention and support they need and deserve.
T
For Downtown Dog Rescue, finding dogs a happy home is just a scratch below the surface of greater issues Weise has faced since opening of the shelter. What first began as a small operation intended to spay and neuter the dogs of low-income or homeless owners in Skid Row, with the help of founding member and secretary Richard Tuttelmondo, later turned into an establishment at an abandoned tow yard in 2013. “It was all we could afford,” said Weise with a humble laugh as she remembered the initial stages of Downtown Dog Rescue. But little by little, the nonprofit shelter was transformed into a home filled with a warm atmosphere for its canine residents. Weise and the team keep the dogs on a predictable schedule in order to avoid causing anxiety for the dogs. Every dog is in tune with the routine and aware of the no barking policy while in the kennel. However, there is always time for fun, and unlike most shelters, Downtown Dog Rescue encourages the dogs to leave their cages to play and interact on a daily basis, as they believe this helps dogs relieve aggression and become social. Although shelters can be thought of as a place that houses abused dogs, that is not the case for this rescue. The majority of the dogs at Downtown Dog Rescue are there due to their owner’s economic conditions and financial neglect. Weise strongly believes shelters are meant to provide help, and not guilt owners who are unable to properly care for their pets and are forced to surrender them. 136 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Extending a Paw • Weise will soon be a certified counselor and wants to implement a people and animal support system to help owners and animals with trauma.
A dog’s loyalty and intelligence can make for great protection—their natural instinct makes for a great, reliable bodyguard. But what is often overlooked is the healing therapy and support they can provide to their owners. Weise realized that in many instances, pets were the only thing that brought happiness and encouragement to people who were homeless or living in temporary housing. With this in mind, Weise and the rescue set out to deliver veterinarian aid once a month with their mobile clinic to low-income communities in Skid Row and Compton. By providing vaccines, spay and neuter, and other case-specific surgery to dogs in need, the shelter has helped well over 5,000 pet and owners stay together. Even greater, the shelter has helped to significantly reduce euthanasia rates for often-overlooked breeds, like pit bulls, in the county shelter in Compton. “[The mobile clinic is] helping people who don’t have anywhere to turn,” shared Weise. Downtown Dog Rescue asks for nothing in return when it comes to providing aid through their mobile clinic, no IDs or contracts are required. “If they’re willing to stand in line at 8 a.m., it means they care,” Weise said. The rescue volunteers work endlessly to provide those in need with numerous resources, whether it be tenants facing pet-related discrimination to people in need of housing, Downtown
Dog Rescue partners with legal centers, food banks and counselors to lend a hand anywhere they can. Weise and Downtown Dog Rescue aim to find loving homes for all animals in the shelter and recommend those who are looking to adopt to fully get to know the animal before adopting, to prevent pets from being returned. Weise suggests visiting the pet two or three times as an effective way of seeing if the pet is the best fit for you. “Pick a dog that suits your lifestyle, not just because it's sad,” said Weise. While the shelter has found success in becoming organically sustainable since its establishment, the future holds great potential for Downtown Dog Rescue as Weise says she hopes to develop a program in the next three years that aims to train qualified shelter dogs as service dogs and pair them with veterans to provide trauma and recuperation support. Currently, Weise is expanding the mobile clinic’s reach and will soon add Watts to their list of monthly stops. For Weise, her mission has always gone beyond simply opening a shelter. “This is more than just animal welfare or rescuing dogs,” Weise said, recalling when she was nominated as a CNN Hero, “It’s social welfare. It’s social justice.”

Alexa Meade does not have any room in her medicine cabinet to store her contact lenses. This is not a cause for concern. The cabinet is, in fact, a gift shop; open it and behold an arrangement of items for sale. Meade’s bathroom closet guards the portal to a neon spandex jungle. Her house stairs, painted in rainbow order, are lined with mirrored film. The result is a reverberating, rainbow hallway ascending to infinity—or Wonderland. Meade refers to this as “the fun house,” her own hometurned-test kitchen for experimental optical illusions and, well, fun. “The main artwork I’m known for involves paintings on people and three-dimensional objects to make them look like a two-dimensional painting,” Meade explains. “What people don’t know is that I create a multitude of artwork and projects unrelated to my main body of work. I’m always creating. I’m always making things.” As one of today’s most sought-after installation artists, “making things” became Meade’s calling after dismounting a fast track in political science. She interned on Capitol Hill well into her undergraduate years at Vassar College, and even worked as a press assistant on Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. During her senior year at Vassar, she had, as she puts it, “the seed of an idea” to apply black paint on shadows she saw outside, not in a studio. “I was curious to know what it would look like to put paint on a shadow. In 2009, I tried painting shadows on my friend. It did interesting things with spatial depth cues, and all of a sudden my friend looked like a painting. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I looked at the camera and I thought that there was something wrong with the camera, rather than this was something new that I had stumbled upon by accident.” Call it an accident or an epiphany, the shadow genesis ignited Meade’s ardor for this untraditional art. The world might as well be Meade’s mobile fun house, existing in between spaces not unlike her subjects, people with pulses, patience, and, with their consent and her genius, paint in their ears. “It’s so dynamic, and it allows for so many more possibilities than the traditional static painting,” Meade discusses. “In my work, you can physically move through the space, and from every possible angle it will look like a two-dimensional painting.” One truly must see Meade’s body of work in order to comprehend the what of its process and performance. Her art is part painting, part sculpture and as previously stated, part performance, when a live person participates as a canvas-come-to-life. Take her collaboration with dancers Lil Buck and Jon Boogz. Together, they created a short film, “Color of Reality,” which weaves the story of gun violence and racial tension in America through Meade’s painting and Buck and Boogz’s choreography. A favorite piece for Meade, the film
garnered the “Art as Impact Award” from CNN Great Big Story and was included in the National Civil Rights Museum “Freedom Awards Ceremony.” In addition to “Color of Reality,” Meade literally dipped her hands in the music video industry with Ariana Grande’s track “God Is a Woman.” The video’s director, Dave Meyers, contacted Meade with a request to paint Grande in an abstract bath of colors. This concept drew from a project Meade collaborated on with performance artist Sheila Vand titled simply “Alexa//Sheila.” “The idea was to take this ‘Alexa//Sheila’ aesthetic and have Ariana in the center of a liquid painting. Part of the inspiration for the colors in the ‘God Is a Woman’ painting came from a Georgia O'Keeffe painting [‘Grey Lines with Black, Blue and Yellow’].” Not even 20 seconds into the video, Meade’s stamp appears, O’Keeffe’s influence evident with Grande’s subtle arm movement signaling a small wave of pink paint. “I think it’s really cool there was this female artist, Georgia O'Keeffe, who made a painting that has inspired yet another painting reinterpreted by two female artists now almost a century later.” Indeed, Meade’s art celebrates the play of illusion and interaction. One cannot help but smile while staring at her subjects in their settings, all arranged as props and characters gone swimming in a Van Gogh. Paint reacts differently to various surfaces, save for skin and clothing, but Meade thrives in improvising with her materials not unlike how she taught herself to paint when she moved back into her parents’ basement post-college. “It took a lot of hard work to build my career, and while they perhaps saw how hard I was working, they still didn’t really believe that it could be a viable career path,” she explains. “One of my proudest moments was when a friend of theirs had seen my artwork online and told them, ‘Wow, I love Alexa’s artwork.’ Something clicked for them that this wasn’t just something I liked to do, but this was something that other people liked to see.” Impacting the modern art world aside, she lives as her own piece of performance art with paint almost permanently decorating her jeans in her studio, from a camera’s lens, on a music video set and in her very own fun house.
