How to Make

DAZED AND AMUSED

Dear Reader, Not only does this book celebrate my favorite time of year, but it also marks the 102nd issue produced by LOCALE Magazine. As you can imagine, turning 102 is a big deal, so at the turn of this significant milestone, I couldn’t help but be reminded of a fellow centenarian, my great-grandma, GG. GG was born in 1918 and has lived through world events that most of us only know of due to our history textbooks. Her family emigrated from Portugal, then lived on and worked a rural farm in California’s Central Valley. She grew up in that countryside, fell in love with her high school sweetheart and then raised a family of her own. Two generations later, she helped raise me, and my childhood was full of stories of her spirit and stubbornness (two things she was never short on) as well as her signature pearls of wisdom. So when it came to building this issue, I tried to keep those pearls in mind, and I hope you can find them as important as I do: 1. “Find what you love to do.” Through these pages, we have found so many different passions to bring to you. From the “visual optimism” that is Leslie Schneider’s Instagram page (pg. 32) to tips from Dani Nagel on how to transform your home into something bright and beautiful (pg. 62), this issue is

chock-full of artists, creators and business owners who have made a career out of their true callings. 2. “So long as you’re healthy and have your family, that’s the main thing.” We hope this issue finds a home inside yours throughout this holiday season; that it’s thumbed through by friends and relatives as they cozy-up on your couch, finding all the things they want to try while with you—whether it’s helping out your community like Khloe Kares (pg. 136), planning a trip together while reading our Hotel Guide (pg. 49) or creating a few Lillet cocktails (pg. 101). 3. “Just have fun.” There are two people gracing the pages of this issue that sum this up perfectly. The first is Julie Pinzur, who’s bringing nostalgia back in style with her shop, Mokuyobi (pg. 116). The second is Cover Star Nick Bateman (pg. 36), who talks about what it’s like to own your craft and live your life—regardless of the labels others try to put on you. So to those of you reading this, I hope that both GG and this issue leave you feeling inspired, especially in this season of reflection and upcoming change. I hope that you find your passions, and I hope that as you’re surrounded by the ones you love, you’ll cherish the health and time that you share. But most importantly, don’t forget to have fun. After all, “that’s the main thing.”

Happy Reading,

JORDAN NISHKIAN Editor jordan.n@localemagazine.com | @wordsbyjordan

The sound of barking isn’t something that’s often heard at a typical LOCALE shoot, but today is a special day. Sharing the spotlight with our cover model, Nick Bateman, are five precious pups from local rescue organization Bark n’ Bitches, who are as adoptable as they are adorable.

T

Rambo, a four year old boxer/ American bulldog mix, waits patiently in the wings as Bateman finishes up in the makeup chair, getting lastminute touch-ups by our on-set hair and makeup artist, Jennifer Mau. “Sleeves are a little long, eh?” Bateman notes as he steps into his first look of the day, letting the first hints of his Canadian roots slip out. His eye for detail is sharp, as he inspects the cuffs of his jacket and adjusts the hidden clip that keeps his dress shirt from buckling. Once fully outfitted in a snappy navy suit with an open-collar pink dress shirt (plus a pocket square for added flair), Bateman and his four-legged costar mug for photographer Corey Wilson, making quite a pair. Up next, stylist Joseph Rene slips Bateman into a gray turtleneck sweater, layered under a sky blue blazer with sleek dress pants. Reclining in a camel-hued, midcentury-modern leather chair, Bateman works the vintage vibe, which is given a modern twist as kicky white tennis trainers win the footwear

debate, beating out a pair of traditional brown leather dress shoes. The scene is complete when twin tenweek-old pitbull/boxer-mix puppies Shai and Tal are set loose to scamper around the set, joining Bateman and covering him with kisses in their matching bow ties. For the cover shot, Bateman suits up in his own geo-patterned smoking jacket and matching pants, putting 11 years of professional modeling to good use, as he runs through his arsenal of poses and steely expressions, transitioning seamlessly from pensive to cheeky, irreverent to happy-go-lucky. Finally, Bateman plops down on a tufted white leather sofa, clad in a honey-colored corduroy blazer. Hopping deftly onto his lap is Preacher, a sassy husky/German Shepherd mix who is barely out of puppyhood at 1½ years old. Styled in a red and black plaid kerchief, Preacher takes playful nips at Bateman’s hands as the camera snaps away to document this dynamic duo, while fellow canine pal Cali, a senior pit bull who’s all of 11 years old, waits patiently nearby, eager for treats. We hope this shoot will serve as a friendly reminder that there are plenty of homeless pups around Los Angeles who are in need of a forever home. If any of our featured pups are no longer available, we welcome you to visit Bark n’ Bitches to be united with your perfect companion.

SPOILER ALERT: THERE’S MUCH MORE TO NICK BATEMAN THAN MEETS THE EYE. THE 6.4 MILLION PEOPLE WHO FOLLOW HIM ON INSTAGRAM MAY SEE A SHIRTLESS HUNK-TURNED-FAMILY MAN, BUT THE MULTIHYPHENATE MODEL-ACTOR-PRODUCER HAS BEEN WORKING TIRELESSLY BEHIND THE SCENES ON A CONTINUOUS STREAM OF PROJECTS IN PRINT, FILM, TELEVISION AND (NOW) MUSIC SINCE HIS EARLY DAYS AS A TEEN MODEL. AT 32 YEARS OLD, BATEMAN HAS AMASSED NOT ONLY A SERIOUS SOCIAL MEDIA FOLLOWING, BUT ALSO A STRING OF PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS; NOT TO MENTION, AN IMPRESSIVE BODY—OF WORK, THAT IS!

As a boy growing up in the small town of Burlington, Ontario, Canada, Bateman didn’t initially have aspirations to work in entertainment. Raised by a supportive single mother, he focused his energy on martial arts, winning four world championship titles in his teens and opening his own karate school by the age of 20. Unlike many models, Bateman pursued a higher education, using his modeling profits to fund his schooling at a university in Vancouver. However, when the recession hit and student enrollment dropped, it was time to forge a new path.

A

Bateman began dabbling in modeling at age 17 after a friend entered him in a catwalk as a joke during a championship competition in Miami. It turned out to be no laughing matter, as it led to meetings with Calvin Klein and a plum campaign with Abercrombie and Fitch, which most millennials will fondly remember as the pinnacle of youth fashion in the mid-aughts. With his face featured on shopping bags and in malls across America, the 6-foot-4-inch model’s career blossomed, leading to three-month stints in New York City, Miami and Milan. However, the desire to spread his wings and explore other avenues—namely acting and producing—took hold as his enthusiasm for a solo modeling career started to wane. “[Modeling is] lonely,” Bateman says. “If you’re a successful model, you’re traveling all over the

world from agency to agency, place to place, and you’re alone 90 percent of the time. And as soon as you learn your angles and your poses and get what the photographer needs, it’s time to move on.” Acting, on the other hand, excites Bateman, giving him a chance to flex a different kind of muscle. “Acting is something that you train for,” he explains. “It’s similar to martial arts; you have to keep your acting muscle going or you’re not going to perform well.” That desire to constantly improve and evolve is what has led Bateman to continue to forge new paths and find success in so many areas. After being introduced to Israeli-Canadian film producer Niv Fichman, Bateman found his entrée into the acting world, in the form of a stunt role that transformed into a full character part in the 2011 Sundance indie film, Hobo With a Shotgun. Fully bitten by the acting bug, Bateman continued to star in a variety of film and television projects, finding a niche in romantic comedies, including Winter Wedding, The Matchmaker’s Playbook and the 2019 Hallmark romance, A Brush With Love. Eager to delve into meatier territory and show a broader range of skills, he’s also been inspired to write and pitch his own passion projects, which tackle heavier social and cultural issues like police brutality and domestic violence. And then there’s music.

LOCALE MAGAZINE 39

By providing exposure to smaller Canadian music groups through his online following, Bateman began to create relationships in the music world, stoking a growing interest in producing songs through collaborations with vocalists and musicians, including the single “Red Flags,” with singer Jocelyn Alice and producer Elijah Woods (not to be confused with the actor of Lord of the Rings fame).

B

In addition to coordinating the tracks, Bateman played a prominent role in inspiring the song’s composition, cementing his position as an industry jack-of-all-trades. “I hate how people are labeled,” he says. “I’m not Nick the Model, or Nick the Actor; I’m a human being. I can do whatever I want if I try, and if I work at it.” It’s this passion for forging new creative paths and disdain for labeling that has Bateman refusing to be pigeon-holed. “My idol, who I’ve always looked up to, is Forrest Gump,” he adds. “I love that anything he wanted to do, he just did it blindly, with passion.” That blind passion is what brought Bateman to Los Angeles five years ago, along with the support of his now-wife, Maria Corrigan. Their relationship began like any good Hollywood meet-cute. Back in Canada, circa 2008, Nick discovered Corrigan on Facebook and sent her “a winky face.” Although he didn’t get the response he had hoped for, fate stepped in two weeks later when Bateman’s buddy convinced him to join in on a night out at Emma’s Back Porch, a popular local watering hole. Sure enough, the girl from Facebook was there, enjoying the evening with friends of her own. “She walked over and said, ‘Are you the guy who sent me that winky face?’” Bateman recalls fondly. By the end of the night, Bateman had won her over, and the two “pinky-swore” to meet again. And meet again, they did. The two tied the knot this past July 17, their eleventh anniversary, in a stunning affair at the Calamigos Ranch in Malibu. The pair was feted by family and friends, with a pint-sized VIP in attendance: their nearly one-year-old son, Chase. “He’s the happiest kid in the world,” Bateman beams while describing his little one. “It’s so fun to see him grow and watch him experience things for the first time. I’ve had more fun doing this than any of the other years of my life.”

“IT’S SO FUN TO SEE [CHASE] GROW AND WATCH HIM EXPERIENCE THINGS FOR THE FIRST TIME. I’VE HAD MORE FUN DOING THIS THAN ANY OF THE OTHER YEARS OF MY LIFE.” —NICK BATEMAN

Having grown up without a strong paternal presence in his own life, Bateman is all the more excited to finally be a father himself. “A lot of people see [having one parent] as a negative thing, but I had such an amazing mom. She always taught me that I can do anything I want, so not having [a father] didn’t really affect me growing up because she was both.”

H

Becoming a family man has changed Bateman for the better, although it came with a price. His social media following took a hit, with a loss of nearly 300,000 heartbroken fans who jumped ship after discovering his picture-perfect personal life. “It didn’t matter to me,” Bateman shrugs. “I didn’t want to keep misrepresenting who I am. It’s this whole fantasy thing: people unfollowing you when they think you’re not available anymore…but now people tell me all the time that they follow me just to see pictures of Chase.” Hiding his personal life was a challenge when moving to Los Angeles five years ago with his long-time love. Quitting her job as a cardiovascular tech, Corrigan joined Bateman on his professional journey from Canada to LA, which eventually led to opportunities for her as an influencer in the social media world. Presenting himself as a single man about town in the land of youth and beauty was an adjustment, but his relationship with Corrigan has remained strong, withstanding the temptations of Hollywood.

“She just has such a beautiful heart,” Bateman gushes. “To me, a personality is so much more important [than looks]. I would see beautiful girls here, but she was so much more beautiful to me just for who she was. She’s so giving, she’s trustworthy and she’s always been there for me. You can’t teach someone how to have a good heart. You either have it or you don’t. I got so lucky that I found someone who’s from my hometown and really relates to me.” In the future, Bateman plans to document more of his family life on Youtube, giving fans an inside look at his daily life with Corrigan and baby Chase. “I don’t get any sleep,” Bateman laughs when describing fatherhood. “And when we do have a babysitter, there’s really no leisure time; we’re just catching up on work. Some people might feel trapped by that, but I love it. Every time I leave, I wish I were back home. My life is pretty much all about my son now.” As for other future endeavors, Bateman plans to continue with more music, as well as more acting and modeling, which continues to be his bread-and-butter. Always carving new avenues for himself, Bateman’s career is brighter than ever and always promises something new. “If I want to do something, I just do it,” Bateman says. “Two years from now, I could be doing something completely different and totally loving it.”

SAN DIEGO BEST OF THE WESTS

For the

World Traveler Who’s Homesick for California You don’t have to travel to the Palace of Versailles to experience French antiques and tapestries, Persian rugs and crystal chandelier decor, as The Westgate Hotel San Diego offers all of that and then some. Situated in the heart of downtown San Diego, the 223-deluxe room (160 of those are kings) hotel offers an exodus to another world, waiting with open arms for the ideal staycation hug. And since that hug comes in a world that is decidedly French-inspired, it makes perfect sense that The Westgate offers a restaurant that is très chic. French-style architecture and decor spill over into The Westgate Room, where you’ll find savory beef tenderloin, as well as an array of seafood from lobster to Bay scallops paired with Baja Prawn. Delicious California cuisine with French influences certainly supports The Westgate’s emphasis on wellness, as stimulated taste buds and warm bellies are evidence of that. But The Westgate Hotel takes it to a whole new level with its AquaVie Spa. There are few places in the heart of a major city where you can find relaxation, peace and quiet, but the AquaVie Spa not only offers just that within its private walls, but also advanced wellness treatments. Since health is a theme for staycationers at The Westgate, you won’t be disappointed by the 40,000 square feet of “sleek custom-designed workout spaces” at the AquaVie Fitness + Wellness Club. Not only does it offer 200 cardio and weight machines, which eclipses most local gyms, but also spin classes, pool access and even a running track on the fourth floor, all of which allow you to zone out while you workout, and zone in on stunning downtown San Diego views. For the

Local in Search of the Perfect Staycation The friendly Westin staff offers a free shuttle service within a five-mile radius of the resort, and within that area is Carlsbad Village and no shortage of activities and food to keep you occupied. But that’s assuming you’d even want to leave the resort in the first place, as the Mediterraneanstyle hotel offers everything from entertainment to first class relaxation. After a day out at the beach or golfing at the adjacent The Crossings 18-hole golf course, you may want to take time to treat yourself at the Ocean Pearl Spa. Their healing body treatments are enhanced by products and methods inspired by the sea, relaxing visitors with services such as the Vitamin Sea Massage or the Mermaid Facial. And of course, what day would be complete without a world-class dinner eaten while watching a stunning sunset view? The 20|Twenty, named for the picturesque, near-panoramic view of the western sky, will have you warming up next to a fire pit while the ocean breeze kisses you as it blows through your hair. Locallysourced food is the restaurant trend these days, but 20|Twenty is a class above, proven by their constant rotation of ingredients and cocktails based on the best locally sourced ingredients. For the casual eater and drinker, The Westin Carlsbad also offers the 7 Mile Kitchen, which serves pizza and beer on tap—‘nough said. But the designers of this coastal retreat had Southern Californians in mind when they included a complete rental service for athletic gear. So if you want to use “forgetting your runners” as an excuse for not working out during your staycation, you’re fresh out of luck.

For many of us, the mere mention of a good happy hour is enough to spread smiles and spark inspiration. But you can take it to the next level in the desert, where the hour is happiest when it’s dipped in a pool while staring at a stunning backdrop of purple mountains and clear skies. PLUNGE is La Quinta Resort & Club’s adults-only pool, and together with Veuve Clicquot, they host a high-spirited soirée, Aprés Swim. The HH menu features bubbling libations sure to keep you refreshed while you chill hard at this super cool swim lounge. We recommend the local fave, the La Quinta Cooler made with mint, cucumber and the drink of the hour—Veuve Clicquot. Come dressed in your poolside best or whatever you’re comfortable in! The laid-back vibe is open to anyone with an interest in a good time. Escape your day or start your night at Aprés Swim every Thursday through Saturday from 3-6 p.m., with Fridays and Saturdays reserved for resort guests only.

Dazed & Amused Moroccan Meets Art Deco Decor in Dazey LA’s Dazeywood Penthouse WRITTEN BY: JENNIFER PELLERITO • PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: DANIELLE NAGEL

Expert : Danielle Nagel Credentials: Founder, Owner and Designer, Dazey LA

Welcome to Dazey Den, the latest venture by Danielle Nagel, the entrepreneur behind the wildly popular clothing company, Dazey LA. If you haven’t already heard, Dazey Den is Nagel’s newest undertaking into the world of interior design. Lucky for us, her latest creative endeavor is only just beginning to blossom.

W

Creativity can barely be contained within the walls of Nagel’s latest project, the Dazeywood Penthouse—an apartment in Los Angeles’ Beachwood Canyon. The 2,000-square foot apartment sits on the top floor of a Spanish-style triplex. Nagel and her boyfriend, Phillip Butler, decided to move into the space after designing their Dazey Desert rental home in Palm Springs. “After spending time at the desert house and then coming back to our relatively small, little, uninspired apartment in LA, we were like, we should really use the money we’ve been able to make with the rental, and just get a spot that we really, really love in LA,” says Nagel. She took the opportunity to design their new apartment as a space that potentially could be rented for photoshoots, although those plans eventually fell through. Now, the Dazeywood Penthouse is the space that Nagel and Butler call home. “It’s such a game-changer: living in a space that you’re really inspired by, especially as a designer,” she says. Naturally, Nagel dreamt up a grand color scheme that entirely transformed the space. Using paint by DunnEdwards, Nagel and Butler painted the apartment in pink, yellow, blue and green shades. Surprising as it may sound, the colors flow cohesively from room to room without skipping a beat. A fusion of glam furnishings and bohemian accessories tie the look together. The space now represents a shift in Nagel’s personal design aesthetic. “Even as a t-shirt designer, I’m doing more funky, Art Deco, ‘90s, artsy kind-of design, versus my super ‘70s stuff that I was doing a few years ago,” she says. Nagel’s selection of artwork hits this point home—a Matisse print complements the pink wall opposite, and one of Nagel’s own whimsical print designs incorporates the same color scheme. In the living room, soft pink walls and a sage-green tiled fireplace come together with a statement rug—a vintage Moroccan that features both colors effortlessly. “We wanted it to be very bubbly and chunky and soft and pink,” Nagel says. “There’s some midcentury touches in our new apartment, but it’s very Moroccan meets Art Deco—it’s super fun.” 64 LOCALE MAGAZINE

HOW TO COMMIT TO COLOR Make Your Apartment More Awe-Worthy With the Power of Pigment

T

The power of color is a strength that Nagel knows how to wield in fashion, art

and design. Featuring bold colors in every room, the apartment is emblematic of Nagel’s identifiable signature style—fearless, feminine and uplifting. “When you

really commit to a color, that’s when you’re going to make something awe-worthy,” says

Nagel. Steeped in funky, Art Deco and ‘90s-inspired décor, the design infuses lush, velvety

textures in sunny yellow, bubbly pink, sage green and baby blue. How can you get the look? We spoke with Nagel to get the inside scoop.

Tip 1

• “It’s okay to mix different shades. If you’re going to mix shades, mix a lot of different shades so it looks intentional.”

Tip 2

• “Test swatches—it will blow your mind how different it looks on the wall versus a swatch. Even just one shade up or down can have an entirely different look. Our room was shockingly bright [yellow]; it wasn’t cute! But then we went with a slightly more gold, subtle yellow and it looked so much better.”

Tip 3

• “Not being afraid of color and just going for it is a statement in of itself. It does tie everything together because it’s so bold. It’s all so bold.”

Tip 6

• “We have green in our living room and green in Phillip’s office. We have pink in the kitchen, and also my office is blue and pink and then we have pink in the living room. You can tell there’s a theme throughout.”

Tip 7

• “Accent walls are a great way to start exploring color. They’re easy to paint and paint back or paint different—it’s just one wall. If our entire room was yellow, the whole room would have a yellow hue that bounces off the walls. What’s great about an accent wall is it doesn’t really mess with the light in that room as much.”

Tip 4

• “Pulling together inspiration from images and different Pinterest boards can really help get a clear vision of what colors you want.”

Tip 5

• “It can be really helpful to keep [colors] in the same tint. Our kitchen and living room are both lighter shades of pink and sage.”

If you haven’t already heard, Dazey Den is Nagel’s newest undertaking into the world of interior design.

A road trip

through the Canadian Rockies has always been on my bucket list, but it seemed so daunting that I postponed it until I was better equipped. Little did I know that there is something there for even the most novice of adventure seekers. From the turquoiseblue lakes and the towering jagged mountains to the abundant wildlife amid dense forest, this drive was undoubtedly the most scenic of my life. And if you’ve driven on the 74 Freeway in the summer months, navigating the stretch between Banff and Jasper is a piece of cake.

Banff Stay Ú A 90-minute drive from the Calgary airport, this little resort town is a perfect home base for exploring the surrounding area. Stay right in the heart of downtown at Mount Royal Hotel to be close to plenty of shops and restaurants, or for epic views of one of Banff’s most famous glacial lakes, experience the luxurious Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. MOUNT ROYAL HOTEL 138 Banff Ave, Banff, AB T1L 1A7 Canada 866.606.6700 | www.banffjaspercollection. com/hotels/mount-royal-hotel FAIRMONT CHATEAU LAKE LOUISE 111 Lake Louise Dr, Lake Louise, AB T0L 1E0 Canada 403.522.3511 | www.fairmont.com/lake-louise

Explore Ú Take the Banff Gondola to soak in a panoramic view of six mountain ranges from above. Pro tip: take the first gondola at 8:30 a.m. to secure a parking spot and have the viewing deck almost completely to yourself. The two most famous turquoise glacial lakes in the area are Lake Louise and Lake Moraine. Going later in the day in the summer (after 4 or 5 p.m.) is encouraged if you want to ditch the crowds, and since there is daylight until about 10 p.m. in the summer, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the sights. Rent a canoe for an hour or enjoy one of 68 LOCALE MAGAZINE

the many hikes around the area. We rented a canoe at Moraine Lake, as it seemed to be less crowded and just as picturesque. If you’re feeling adventurous, take on The Devil’s Thumb climbers’ trail—a 7.4-mile hike with an elevation gain of 2,897 feet—for an incredible view of both lakes at the top. If you’re like me and begin panting profusely at the slightest incline, the 1½-mile hike to Fairview Lookout at Lake Louise is good enough to catch a sight from above. Eat & Drink Ú If you’re a whiskey drinker, Park Distillery Restaurant & Bar is a must-stop. Be sure to try the Plain of Six Glaciers cocktail served with their housemade Park Glacier Rye, or try a Skoki Lodge, served with their Park Maple Rye and a scorched piece of wood on top of the glass to give it that smoky flavor. Maybe even take a bottle or two home with you to go along with a pizza from The Bear Street Tavern. Don’t forget their signature chili oil and honey mixture to dip the crust in! [The Icefields Parkway] takes about 2 ½ hours to traverse, but keep in mind you will want to stop about every five minutes because the views are that amazing, and you might spot a bear like we did! COLUMBIA ICEFIELD DISCOVERY CENTRE

STARTING LINE Ú When planning your trip, note that there will most likely be no snow or ice in the summer, but driving in the winter is a completely different story. If you are not experienced in driving through snow, I recommend going from June through August. If you are going back to Calgary, you will be taking the same road back, so plan for stops on the way up and the way down. We did the Icefield experience on the way up and explored Peyto and Moraine Lake on our way down.

PAY THE FEES TO SAVE THE TREES Ú Be sure to pay the Banff National Park and/or Jasper National Park fees when driving into the city. It’s easy to drive past the toll booths; there are open lanes for cars that already have passes, so keep an eye out. If you don’t have your ticket on your dash, you will be fined. WHY SO BLUE? Ú As a glacier melts into a lake, it scrapes the bedrock, creating sediments or glacial silt that causes the water to appear bright turquoise and milky.

The two most famous turquoise glacial lakes in the area are Lake Louise and Lake Moraine. Jasper Ú Once you finally make it to Jasper, book a stay at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, or for a little more rustic feel, drive a little further north to the secluded Overlander Mountain Lodge. Enjoy breakfast at the Sunhouse Cafe before making your way to Maligne Lake, one of the most Instagrammable places in Jasper National Park. FAIRMONT JASPER PARK LODGE 1 Old Lodge Rd, Jasper, AB T0E 1E0 Canada 780.852.3301 | www.fairmont.com/jasper

The Icefields Parkway Ú As you make your way up toward Jasper, you can catch a glimpse of Bow Lake from the road, and Peyto Lake is only a short 10-minute hike (and well worth the stop). The Icefields Parkway is the road between Banff and Jasper. It takes about 2 ½ hours to traverse, but you will want to stop about every five minutes because the views are that amazing, and you might spot a bear like we did! You can’t miss the receding Athabasca Glacier as you drive down the parkway. Ride in one of the massive buses up onto the glacier to see it up close or take a quick look at the bottom. If

you aren’t afraid of heights, a little bit down the road is the Columbia Icefield Skywalk, where you can step out onto a glass platform separating you from a 918-foot drop. Both of these experiences require a checkin and tickets at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, so book in advance. Also, keep in mind that these experiences will take a few hours, so be sure to factor that in when planning your day. If Walls Could Talk THESE LIVING WALLS ARE BRIDGING AGRICULTURE AND DECOR FOR A NATURAL FLAIR

Stay Palm

• “I’ve always been intrigued by fishtail palms,” Wallace muses. “It’s one of those plants where you either love them or hate them.”

Plant-setter

• Wallace reveals the next trendy plants are Philodendron Monstera, Calathea varieties and Fabian Aralias.

WRITTEN BY: JANE ADLER PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NATHAN WHELAN

In the plant kingdom, one man reigns as king of the jungle. That man is Greg Wallace. Nearly 40 years ago, a seed was planted that Wallace grew into a blooming—eh hem— we mean booming business. Stemming from his own Southern California roots, Wallace took over an Orange County botanical business in 1980 and, what started as a simple side gig, developed into four decades of working in the field of plants, and his company, Instant Jungle, is still thriving today.

I

Instant Jungle is an industry leader when it comes to the latest plant furnishing trend: living walls. These installations act as living, breathing art that can complement any personal or public space. When it comes to choosing your living wall, there are three different types of applications (tray, module or TerraScreen wall) to consider after deciding whether the plants will live inside or outside. Design concepts and aesthetic are meticulously mulled over, and a method to frame the wall and how it will adhere to its new vertical home are picked. Depending on which system is chosen, a living wall can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to install from start to finish. Instant Jungle works hand-in-hand with landscapers

and customers to ensure that the wall is functional, aesthetically pleasing and matches its surroundings. This form of agricultural art can range in scope from a single wall to an entire rooftop and everything in between.

Greg Wallace CEO, Instant Jungle

“Plants create a nice environment and ambiance and they just really enhance [an area]. We stage with plants to soften things, make them look warm and friendly,” says Wallace. While the living walls still remain one of the top trends in the flora field, Wallace acknowledges that “architectural plants are really popular again…[they are] coming back and making a stronger statement because it also kind of ties in with the drought-tolerant trend.” If you recall, droughttolerant plants began sprouting like weeds with all sorts of species of succulents invading the industry. Wallace jokes, however, that “we’ve had rain and we have short-term memory,” so he predicts this trend may soon be watered down, so to speak. Wallace explains, “The cool thing is we can use anything that is on the property. We have different decorative containers. We have different ways to wrap [our plants]. We offer underplanting so you can do a forest, a jungle…we can create the whole element or illusion, whatever you want to create.”

RAISE A GLASS TO TURA ALCOHOLIC KOMBUCHA FOR A HEALTHIER ALTERNATIVE WRITTEN BY: RAPHAEL MADRID PHOTOGRAPHED BY: JOHN GLOVER STYLED BY: JACLYN KERSHEK

It’s hard to believe that just 10 short years ago, the only libation choices widely accessible to us were regular ol’ beer and the variety of hard alcohol we are quite familiar with. Times have truly changed for the better with microbreweries and distilleries sprouting up in just about every able town in America. Now, the variety has ascended to the pinnacle with the addition of Tura Alcoholic Kombucha.

The phrase “You can’t have your cake and eat it, too,” doesn’t really apply here, does it? In fact, it looks like you can have your cake, eat it and reap its benefits too. Tura is the perfect brew with the benefits of kombucha and the crisp bite you expect from an alcoholic beverage. While all kombucha naturally contains alcohol, Tura takes an additional step to create this certified organic, gluten-free kombucha that is four percent ABV and only 120 calories, making it the best alternative to beer since beer itself. Tura was developed by a humble team of kombucha enthusiasts led by Product Developer Annette Fritsch. Brewed in small batches

Before the creation of Tura, Fritsch found joy in experimenting in the complexities of kombucha’s fermentation. As a thirdgeneration yogi, meditation practitioner, student of Ayurveda, avid kombucha drinker and curious brewer, Fritsch wanted to craft a great tasting, hard kombucha that would fit within her lifestyle and the lifestyle of many others living well. “While I have dedicated most of my life to fermentation, I’ve found that kombucha fermentation is one of the most unique, given the interaction of different types of fermentation working harmoniously together— all to create something refreshing and delicious!” said Fritsch. It’s that spirit and dedication that birthed Tura’s natural greatness.

It’s one that reminds diners of pasta made by momma—except this one has turmeric, which adds a punch to the cozy cream sauce, taking it to the next level. Enter the headliner of the dish: the seafood. Tossed with the uni cream sauce and the sofrito blend, rigatoni noodles meet wondrous and copious amounts of seafood. Lobster, shrimp, squid, bay scallops and mussels showcase the bountiful harvest found in the ocean and create a unique texture and flavor palate. One of the stars of Herringbone’s delicious menu is the seafood pasta. It combines everything fantastic about Herringbone: a fresh take on seafood mixed with cozy and familiar flavors. Crafting this seafood pasta takes a bit of time, but it’s a process filled with love and intention that is totally worth it. This seafood pasta is like nothing else, and Executive Chef Nicholas Cataldo describes it perfectly. “It’s combining a lot of different flavors and elements to create a warm and homey feel,” he explains. “Most seafood pasta dishes are bland and boring. We put some luxury items, uni and lobster, to give it an elevated class level.” Chef Cataldo begins with a sofrito mixture that combines onion, bell peppers, garlic, olive oil, celery, lemon and salt to create a flavorful, sweet yet slightly acidic blend to add to the uni cream sauce. Skull Is in Session

THE OWNERS OF MERCADO BRING CONTEMPORARY FLAIR TO TRADITIONAL DISHES

September marked the opening of Mercado Manhattan Beach, the fifth location of the restaurant chain founded by owner Jesse Gomez and his partner, Chef Jose Acevedo. The pair’s collaborative fingerprint permeates the entire 7,000-square foot space, reflecting their personalities and style. “We call [Acevedo] El Nopal when he’s angry,” Gomez admits with a smile. “It translates to cactus or prickly pear, maybe even knucklehead. But it’s all good. It’s not really anger; it’s pure passion.”

S

WRITTEN BY: ELISE EDWARDS • PHOTOGRAPHED BY: PHILIP GUERETTE

KILLER ACCENTS • All of Mercado’s restaurants feature artists’ depictions of skulls. Pasadena has skulls constructed of bullets, Hollywood has skulls painted on skateboards, LA’s canvases are created with fire and smoke and Manhattan Beach features eerily muted craniums by Belgium artist Johan Van Mullem.

• An incredible fusion of family recipes passed down for generations and modern culinary mastery.

While these two may share a sense of humor, their food is no joke. Unlike some Mexican restaurants where rice and beans are piled high as though through obligation, each ingredient at Mercado is purposeful. Acevedo’s attention to detail launched his obsession with finding the best produce sourced from farmers markets, along with meat and fish from top suppliers.

DECOR • Mercado challenges the notion of the brightly colored traditional Mexican restaurant by making the Day of the Dead motif feel hip.

His favorite dish to cook is a recipe that has been in his family for 40 years, and it is (not surprisingly) one of his most popular. The carnitas, a slow-cooked pork that is braised in orange juice, peppercorn, garlic and water for three hours, then fried and coated with caramel to seal in the flavor, is an undeniable masterpiece. “Carnitas in Mexico are all salt. No sweetness,” Acevedo says. The meat is prepared every two hours at the restaurant to ensure its freshness and is served with homemade corn tortillas, slivers of onion, guacamole and cauliflower seasoned with chile morita.

PRICE • If you appreciate the true skill that goes into creating great food prepared with quality ingredients, you won’t mind that they charge more than the average Mexican restaurant.

Also try the Mexican kale salad, featuring queso fresco and cotija pesto bread crumbs, tamales topped with crema fresca and cilantro. Pair it with the spicy cucumber margarita infused with housemade jalapeno purée.

At Mercado, the extreme care that goes into the food also extends into the décor. No corners were cut in creating this stylish yet comfortable space outfitted with leather booths, industrial chandeliers and wooden accents. Look carefully and you’ll notice cacti hidden in murals throughout their restaurants. Here’s a hint––at Mercado Manhattan Beach, the cactus resides near the restrooms; it’s thoughtfully placed next to a heavyset version of Gomez’s dog. “It’s all about creating partnerships with people who get who you are,” Gomez says. “When we need to be here seven days a week, we are. When we need to fix things, we do. We’re leaving our mark and creating a legacy.” 98 LOCALE MAGAZINE

VERDICT • With craft cocktails, an extensive wine list and quality food, Mercado is poised to become a neighborhood staple.

We wait longer so the ripeness produces a richer, deeper flavor for our recipes.” Be sure to try the quail confit, “carnitas-style!”

Wear, Recycle, Repeat SHOPPING SUSTAINABLY HAS NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD

WRITTEN BY: JAMEE LIND PHOTOGRAPHED BY: TAE KWON

For some, it’s the authentic faded wear of a nice pair of jeans from the ‘80s that brought them into the world of vintage clothing. For Greg and Ricky Kaplan, used clothing is a way of life. The brothers are partners at American Recycled Clothing, a wholesale vintage clothing retailer that is redesigning the way clothing companies think about used apparel.

F

It’s been a journey for the vintage entrepreneurs, to say the least. Being in the vintage clothing business today equates to a warm, eco-friendly welcome from many, but starting a wholesale vintage clothing company in 1992 was met with a lot of resistance. Unlike today, when a stellar knitted sweater from the ‘70s provides distinct vintage clout, the ‘90s were less open to the idea of used clothing. “It was very taboo up until the last five to 10 years. There was a lot of hesitation about wearing anything pre-used [or] pre-worn,” Greg said. However, what was previously looked down upon has more and more become a unique closet staple. “The world is changing and

is becoming more accepting of what people once considered as trash,” Greg said. Flash-forward to 2019, and their business idea has not only expanded sustainable fashion options but has blossomed into a new way of revamping vintage threads—7 million pounds of vintage threads to be exact. Now with three warehouses of vintage goodies, the brothers have moved past typical 21st-century manufacturing routines by taking old clothing and reshaping it into their own. Continuously getting in unique products, as well as releasing some of the old clothing that they specially stored, American Recycled Clothing is staying ahead of the new with the old. “We have goods we’ve been sitting on for 10 years that come back in focus,” Greg said. “We have a very diverse and complex supply chain.” He went on to explain that the world is becoming more open to what they do for sustainability and people being more conscious about what they are wearing and where it’s from. With an always-growing used consumer market, the brothers plan to continue to scale up, one vintage thread at a time.

For George LaBoda, co-creator of menswear and men’s lifestyle platform Gents Lounge and the face of polished yet subtly rugged city-style brand Atlas and Mason, Downtown LA makes for the perfect creative canvas. As a downtown local—and a bonafide man-about-town—LaBoda took us around for an up-close and personal glimpse inside his perfect day in DTLA, and we happily came along for the ride.

F

11:15 a.m. CoCo Fresh Ú What better way

to cool down after a morning workout than by sipping on a cold beverage? Rip a page from LaBoda’s book and try a specialty tapiocabased boba tea, or stay hydrated with a handsqueezed mixed juice, a frothy latte or a creamy smoothie. “They make some of the best boba drinks in DTLA,” LaBoda explains. “I always get the mango green tea!” COCO FRESH 735 S Figueroa St, Ste 119 Los Angeles, CA 90017 213.372.5532 www.cocofreshdtla.com

9:30 a.m. Bespoke Cycling Studio Ú To kick off the day, a blast of cardio is the first order of business. Nestled inside the bustling downtown retail hub known as FIGat7th, Bespoke’s Los Angeles flagship location offers a full schedule of high-intensity spin classes, featuring carefully curated playlists that allow you to get in the zone as you sculpt your body. “I love taking spin classes at Bespoke,” says LaBoda. “It’s a great way to break up your normal workout routine and get in some great cardio.” BESPOKE CYCLING STUDIO 735 S Figueroa St, Ste 105, Los Angeles, CA 90017 213.228.2828 | www.bespokecyclingstudio.com

Don’t Even

One of LaBoda’s biggest fashion “don’ts” is over-accessorizing. “When guys first start putting on suits, they want all the accessories,” he explains. “So they’ll have the cufflinks, the tie bar, the lapel pin, the big flower, the pocket square…and it can just be too much.”

2:30 p.m. Ohana Poké Co Ú Lunchtime calls for some satisfying fare—with a kick!

Creating a custom poké bowl from the mouth-watering buffet of savory spices, rice and creative toppings, LaBoda opts for a tuna bowl with a half-rice, half-kale base, loaded with kimchi cucumber, ginger edamame, crispy garlic and scallions. “Ohana Poké is great for a quick, healthy lunch or even dinner to go,” LaBoda says. “My go-to is their Fire Tuna which is even hotter than the Spicy Tuna. I love spicy food, so the hotter, the better!”

With his whistle wet and palate open, the next round of oxtail agnolotti arrives, marinated in a bone marrow butter and speckled with beef tendon chicharrones. This paves the way for the Bay King salmon, served atop a quinoa salad and a melange of summer vegetables. “Faith and Flower has it all—great food, great drinks, and atmosphere for days,” says LaBoda. “When you visit, be sure to order the English milk punch. Julie Pinzur Founder and Creative Director of Mokuyobi

Senzogaeri Mokuyōbi FOR JULIE PINZUR, EVERY DAY IS THROWBACK THURSDAY

WRITTEN BY: REED RYLEY GRABLE Rising behind a cartoonish mock-up of Mount Fuji are bright lines reminiscent of the sun’s rays. It evokes a sense of curiosity and wonder, provoking an eagerness in its viewer to pursue and explore. This is the logo for Julie Pinzur’s Mokuyobi, a clothing company hidden in South Pasadena which aims to put the fun in functionality.

With her company, Pinzur wanted to bring forth the world she had in her head and apply it to those around her.

• Pinzur enrolled in the Parson’s School of Design in New York and earned a degree in illustration, she then had the ability to create what she envisioned. Her senior project was a robot dress—a bright blue dress with switches, knobs and buttons.

Mokuyobi came from humble beginnings; Pinzur’s interests in sewing stemmed from when she was young, and

With her company, Pinzur wanted to bring forth the world she had in her head and apply it to those around her. “The whole idea is this: I felt like this stuff didn’t exist—like the stuff I like didn’t exist. Like cute, and not too cutesy... cool, but not, like, bad… It’s very rad and awesome. I wanted to expand that world I didn’t see at all.” A major inspiration came after she spent time studying abroad in Japan, which provoked her to apply bright colors, futuristic designs and even 1980s and ‘90s cartoons to her work—as Pinzur puts it, a “culmination of all her interests.” In fact, “Mokuyobi” is Japanese for the word “Thursday,” which Pinzur says is the absolute best day of the week. Why Thursday? Because with Thursday, there is still anticipation and excitement for the upcoming weekend that hasn’t yet been tapped into. “So, it’s about the anticipation—that feeling of being excited, and that’s what I’m trying to chase. When you see Mokuyobi, I just want for you to be excited.” In other words: Pinzur wants her buyers to look at her clothing and think, “Yes, this is where I want to be!”

Bright Ideas • “Sometimes I’ll just see something and it’ll make an idea spark,” Pinzur explains, “and I try to imagine whatever that imaginary thing is and make it.” 116 LOCALE MAGAZINE

School of Thought

The niche company produces bright, colorful garments with illustrative designs on an array of items, ranging from watermelon-inspired fanny packs to funky-colored backpacks, noodle doodle shirts and crown-shaped hats. As the company grew from being a project in then-19-year-old Pinzur’s home to a full-fledged brand sold in retailers as big as Urban Outfitters, Pinzur has pushed herself with each creative design. “Each thing I make, I think, ‘That was cool… but this next thing…’” Pinzur says, as the company’s style and direction evolved. “I’m always trying to up myself.”

as she grew up, she would constantly have ideas she wanted to apply but hadn’t the artistic skill to pursue them. Now, Pinzur has all she needs to bring her whimsical creations to life; all of the work she produces is done by hand, starting with the print designs and then the textiles.

A Rev-olutionary Idea SOUTH BAY BMW IS CUTTING EDGE, NOT CUTTING CORNERS WRITTEN BY: DASH FINLEY • PHOTOGRAPHED BY: PETER KOVAL

In many circles, Southern California is considered the car capital of the world. With an estimated seven million vehicles on the road, it’s no wonder that the area is home to the most car dealerships in the United States. So, how is any individual dealership meant to stand out in the face of such voluminous competition? Enter South Bay BMW—a dealership with a unique approach to selling cars that has successfully managed to set itself apart from the crowd, all under the watchful eye of its forward-thinking general manager, John Hall. “It’s a neighborhood dealership,” says Hall. “A staple in the city of Torrance and the South Bay...we try to make a culture. Our owner Danny...takes such pride in this location.” Indeed, that’s Danny McKenna, patriarch of the McKenna Cars network—a family business stretching back over 50 years with nine separate dealerships. Despite this collection, Hall says, “South Bay BMW is our flagship.” From the get-go, Hall knew that he was taking the reins of something special. “The difference that we have...comes from the details...and [from] giving the customer an experience,” says Hall. Hall’s passion for cars is the natural crescendo of a young life largely focused around the automotive world. “I grew up abroad in Europe and primarily lived between England and Italy,” he shares. “But I remember being two years old, and cars were a fascination. I was obsessed with car shows, car magazines, collecting cars...” After graduating college, Hall moved to Los Angeles and responded to an ad in a newspaper for a job at a local dealership. Hall landed the job and quickly moved up the ranks, eventually securing a fixture position.

Today, Hall is able to put his depth of knowledge to good use with South Bay’s triad of top-shelf car brands. Each one of these labels brings something different to the table, providing customers with the widest possible pool of options. Per Hall: “BMW is iconic...the crossbreed of luxury, performance and safety. BMW is the one who starts the trends...as a benchmark for other brands, by way of design or technology. For Hall and his team, it’s all about creating a meaningful and pleasant customer experience. He explains that “when you purchase a vehicle, you want that smile on that customer’s face. South Bay is a great community of people who are warm and friendly… The businesses here are so attached to the community, and so are we.”

Hall of Famers • Hall struggles to pick his favorite car out of all the vehicles on the lot, but he eventually settles on the greenfriendly BMW I3 (his daily commuter), as well as the X5 SAV. Then, for Mini, he goes with the classic John Cooper Works threedoor hardtop; for Volvo, he selects the hybrid XC60/ XC90.

“How do you not acknowledge a person just because they’re on the streets?” —Khloe Thompson

It took Khloe Thompson over an hour to get from her home in Orange County to our interview in Downtown LA. She used that time to get her homework done. She then grabbed an armful of clothes in preparation to pose for photos and answer questions in sweltering 90-degree heat. When I offered to assist with her wardrobe, she said, “I’m fine; I’m used to it.”

I

“She’s not your average 12-year-old,” her mother, Alicia, offered up. That much is clear. Thompson is the mastermind behind Khloe Kares, a non-profit dedicated to helping others that she launched at the tender age of nine. It all started with a homeless woman she passed by on her way to school each morning. “I wondered why she was out there and felt badly for her. I wanted to do something,” Thompson said. 138 LOCALE MAGAZINE

With her grandmother’s help, Thompson went home and sewed 25 bags that she filled with essentials. The first bag went to the homeless woman she came to know as Michelle, who served as her initial inspiration. “I was a little nervous,” Khloe admitted, “but I introduced myself and gave her the bag. She kept saying, ‘T hank you’ and ‘God bless you.’ It felt like the best day ever.” Soon, Thompson and her family found themselves sewing more and more bags while, at the same time, reaching out to friends and family for donations over Facebook. To date, they estimate they’ve donated over 5,500 bags. “I’m not nervous to go up to people anymore,” said Thompson. “I realize that they’re regular people. It’s just like talking to your best friend. That’s how I treat them.” In addition to assembling and handing out bags, Thompson speaks out about her mission with people all over the country. From the Mark Leadership Conference at Rutgers University and a crowd of 70,000 at The Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, to numerous Boys and Girls Clubs that she hit during a cross-country service tour, she has no problem sharing her goals. And her reach doesn’t stop in the US. In 2016, Thompson was invited to Ghana by a group of girls whom she now visits on a yearly basis. She managed to raise enough money to build a six-stall bathroom facility and filtered water pump in their school, and she plans to continue doing the same work at different schools each year. “I mentor the

Sharing Is Karing • “It’s important for me to help people because I want everyone to feel like there’s someone who cares about them,” Thompson explained. Perseverance Is Key • “I’ve learned a lot about running a business. It’s a roller coaster. Sometimes I don’t think I’m going to have enough bags finished in time or have enough money or supplies, but there’s always a part of me that knows I can do it,” Thompson said. “My advice to others is: don’t let your fears stop you. Just keep pushing even if you’re scared.” Dream It, Believe It • In Ghana, Thompson made vision boards with the girls. It’s something she does for herself each year as part of her New Year’s resolution. “I always have Paris on there,” she said. “I know I’ll get there someday.”

girls, they send me letters and sometimes we have video chats. Ghana is one of my favorite places to visit, and we’re always sad when I leave.” Luckily for both parties, after being gifted an acre of land by the chief of a village there, chances are she’ll get to spend more time in the country. Her dream is to eventually build a community center on the property with an attached Airbnb to generate income and keep it flourishing. Thompson’s schedule is so jam-packed that in fifth grade, she started being homeschooled. It’s a change her mother said she welcomed. “She knew if she were homeschooled, she could help more people. My youngest child is in regular school, but that just wasn’t Khloe’s path. I never wanted anyone to think I was pushing Khloe, but this is who she is. She has an incredible way of connecting with people. When she hands out those bags, she starts intimate conversations that make everyone feel important at that moment.” While most of us can see what a unique quality that is, especially for a child her age, to Thompson, it’s just second nature. “I once gave a bag to a woman at a women’s shelter, and she asked for a hug. When I hugged her, she burst into tears and said she hadn’t been looked at or acknowledged in so long,” Thompson recounted. “That was upsetting to me. How do you not acknowledge a person just because they’re on the streets?” Khloe Kares estimates it has helped tens of thousands of people so far, and there’s no plan to slow down. If Thompson has her way, she will eventually open a community center in Los Angeles where she can employ as many people as possible and give them the skills they need to start new careers. “They could clean up or help in the kitchen. There will be so many job opportunities, and it will be a place for all ages where everyone will feel welcome.”

The Colors of His Energy

Bali on the Brain • Bali remains Deren’s favorite place on the planet. Being there was a catalyst for him becoming an artist, so it always has this magical feel every time he goes back.

“BORING” ISN’T IN ARTIST MADSTEEZ’S VOCABULARY

WRITTEN BY: AUBREY FREITAS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: MADSTEEZ

He has provided his colorful twist to art pieces on Prince, Stan Lee, Shaq and Amelia Earhart (to name a few). He also worked with Nike to create a signature series shoe, designed a line of Evisu jeans and created art on snowboards with the ski company Armada. His portfolio is just as decorative as his art itself.

Los Angeles is one of the greatest art hubs in the world for all genres, mediums and people pursuing their passions. One artist, Mark Paul Deren (aka MadSteez), is adding a fluorescent touch of his own to the LA area and throughout the world. Deren is an artist whose particular medium includes murals that span the length of walls easily over 100 feet— his imagination seemingly just too large to fit a canvas of anything less.

Deren hopes that his art “leaves you feeling a sense of happiness and can inspire you and your day.”

Deren’s inspiration for such unique color use comes from a rare condition in his left eye that is considered a form of blindness, but it allows him to see “wild colors, gradients and kaleidoscope prism effects,” all of which he emulates in his art. Out of This World • Deren has been in talks for painting in space, but he isn’t sure he will be able to make it on a spaceship due to his fear of flying. 99 Problems, But a Beat Ain’t One • Deren’s creative process must involve music. He usually has a song on repeat for days, but when he’s in a song slump, he puts all 99 of his Pandora stations on shuffle to make the most genius DJ. 140 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Deren’s passion for art began when he had a quarter-life crisis at 20 years old that led to quitting his job and traveling to both Bali and other places throughout Europe for several months. This was his first time traveling the world, and he says his eyes were “woken with a bleeding sense to create.” When he returned home, he did just that, painting unbelievably vibrant and imaginative murals all over the US and beyond that would make even the Mad Hatter blush. Deren’s inspiration for such unique color use comes from a rare condition in his left eye that is considered a form of blindness, but it allows him to see “wild colors, gradients and kaleidoscope prism effects,” all of which he emulates in his art.

According to Deren, street art offers more “space and freedom, where you can really stretch out,” allowing the artist to “change the landscape of the entire area.” Deren hopes that his art “leaves you feeling a sense of happiness and can inspire you and your day.” Street art also fosters a sense of community—to the extent that the people of North Park in San Diego made local and national news trying to save Deren’s WEENosarus Rex from being painted over. Deren “had no idea [his art] would even last a month, let alone eight good years,” or mean that much to the neighborhood. In the future, Deren will be working on a lineup of commissioned art pieces, and his next 24 months are booked with special projects that are hush-hush. We will all just have to wait and see what enchanting madness Deren has up his sleeve, or rather, in his mind.

Dirt by Day, Date by Night THIS FORD RAPTOR CLEANS UP NICELY WRITTEN BY: JAMEE LIND PHOTOGRAPHED BY: AKIN ODEBUNMI MODELS: KATIE BOZNER AND JEREMY GRINACOFF OF BRAND MODEL & TALENT AGENCY, www.brandtalent.net

Sitting in your office parking lot Monday morning, spotted with the mud and the toils of the weekend, is your customized Ford Raptor. You’re obviously upset about the dirt, but you can’t be brought down too far when you know what lies underneath that dried inch of sand. Your only actual worry is getting it cleaned before your dinner date later on tonight.

S

But again, you know that the dirt can be managed; your expectations, however, cannot. When you’re trucking through the dirty bliss of an open California backroad, or zooming past the city lights of downtown, you need a vehicle as diverse and complex as yourself. You already know that the factory presets of a modern-day truck inhibit your free-flowing lifestyle and limit the travel capabilities of both you and your vehicle. That’s why you went with a customized KG Custom Ford Raptor in the first place, to hint at how bold you actually are compared to those around you. A customized Ford Raptor is considered “the best truck in the market,” according to Ruben Pina,

General Manager at KG Custom. Built for both athletes and other high-end professionals, Pina notes that this is a car no one is going to be able to not notice, and that’s exactly what you’re going to need to impress your date tonight—just cleaned up a little first. “In the social way we live, it’s a car that really pulls to our attention,” Pina said, furthering on about how their Ford Raptor caters to the needs of every highend driver. From cold air intakes to customizable brakes, the KG Custom design brings its clients the ultimate horsepower. “You have function, aesthetics and aggressive styling,” said Pina. “Contractors, construction, athletes, guys that want to go surfing— it’s the best, all-around getaway truck.” The car wash is squeezed in after your last meeting, something you were never too worried about in the first place. You are a little worried about how the date will go, but more excited to see what’s in store for the night, with your freshly cleaned customized Ford Raptor making it a much smoother ride (and first impression).
