he BMW Performance Driving School West opened last year but the racetrack hasn’t cooled down yet. BMW’s West Coast school shares a driving course with The Thermal Club, which is like a country club for cars. Adam Seaman, an instructor at the school, discusses how to get a handle on driving well and drifting fast.

Q: How is it taking drivers out on the Thermal track? Adam Seaman: On a day-to-day basis it’s nothing for us to see Ferraris and Lamborghinis and McLarens pull through the parking lot. And then something else that’s very different from the East Coast facility is we have access to real, true racetracks. It’s the difference between going to a go-kart track, Frankie’s Fun Park, and going to a real racetrack. Q: So what sets the BMW driving performance school apart from other driving schools? AS: First of all, we have— and I’m a firm believer in

this—the best instructors in the world. Our instructors go through extensive training before they’re ever allowed to instruct. Our cars are 100 percent factory; we make no changes to our cars. It’s just like you would get from a BMW dealer off the showroom floor. It’s a testament to the durability of the car. Q: What’s the driving course like? AS: We have our own personal facility with a track. It’s got 1.3 miles of actual track and then it has a large 15-acre black lake. And then we have a 350 foot in diameter polished concrete skid pad over there. For our larger programs, we have access

to the large racetrack, the Thermal track, which is almost four miles of track as of now. Q: How would someone benefit from enrolling in a driving school program to learn performance driving? AS: It’s fun, first of all. When you come out, you get to drive somebody else’s BMW hard. But also, these skills can be applied to the real world. Say you have people coming in from the north where it snows a lot, well, we’re gonna take you out on the skid pad so when you lose grip in the snow you know how to recover from that. We also have basic car control schools called car control clinics.

That’s where we do a lot of real world skills like emergency lane changes and emergency braking. We do it on a closed course so that you know once you get out there in the real world how the car is going to react. Q: What are the most popular driving packages? AS: One of our best sellers is going to be the one- and two-day M school. The two-day school is much more in depth. Our teen school is probably the most important school we do. It isn’t maybe the school the instructors like to do the most because the students can be a handful, but it is the most important school we

Teens need some sort of extra instruction behind the wheel besides the Auto Club driving school where they teach you how to back up in a straight line and do a three-point turn. Q: What’s the hardest lesson for drivers to learn from the program? AS: You need to look farther ahead; you need to look past the car ahead of you. I still have to remind myself to look where I want the car to go, not where it’s going. And then

the second thing after that, everybody wants to learn how to drift. That’s what my background’s in, so when I introduce myself and say, “Hey, I’m a drifter,” they say, “I wanna learn how to drift.” And everybody struggles with it because drifting is about 90 percent where you’re looking. Q: How did you get into drifting? AS: I started the wrong way when I was a teenager, doing it on the streets. And I realized pretty quickly as tickets added up and I wrecked

I picked up a sponsor, I kept that sponsor for almost nine years and I earned my professional license. So I have my professional license as a performance drift driver. Q: What makes playing golf in La Quinta different from anywhere else? Randy Duncan: Near perfect weather and pristine course conditions along with the local Santa Rosa Mountains create a unique and very picturesque background for golf. When you play golf in La Quinta, you are usually following in the footsteps of PGA tour players since many of the golf courses here have been part or are currently part of the PGA Tour schedule. Q: What advice would you give the novice golfer? RD: Take lessons early. Most beginners begin playing golf without learning the proper technique and basic fundamentals and eventually get frustrated and quit because they’re not having fun. Most golf

courses offer Get Golf Ready programs that are geared toward beginners and are usually done in group formats that are very affordable. Q: Business and golfing have been linked together for many years. What is it about the game that makes it the perfect setting for doing business? RD: Many business deals are done while playing a round of golf. Golf typically takes 4-5 hours to play so it’s a great opportunity to spend quality time with a client or potential customer in a nonformal environment. There is a bonding that happens when you golf together and that is why golf has been so popular for doing business. Q: What is the most challenging part of the game? RD: Seems like an easy game—just hit a little white golf ball that isn’t even moving. The longer you play golf you quickly

understand that you are usually your worst enemy while playing and it’s easy to fall in love with this internal challenge. All it takes is hitting one good shot and experiencing the feeling of hitting it square or flush, and you will spend countless attempts trying to recreate this feeling. Q: What is your favorite set of golf clubs and why? RD: All the golf clubs today are great. You can’t go wrong with any of the big club manufacturers. Equipment has come a long way and it comes down to personal preference. I would say that if you do buy clubs, spend a little extra money to get properly fit. Just like buying an expensive suit, you need to get fitted properly to ensure that the clubs will work for your build and ability. Q: In the game of golf, what is more important: confidence or competence? RD: I would say

competence when you are starting out. You need to learn the basic fundamentals first. As you become an experienced golfer, confidence will take your game to another level. Q: Describe a perfect day of golf. RD: A perfect day of golf for me would include playing with people you enjoy being around. Playing in ideal weather conditions. Playing a golf course that is well-designed. Playing a golf course with wellmanicured playing surfaces (greens, fairways, roughs, etc.). A course where the customer service is high and it has all the amenities (GPS golf carts, grass driving range, restaurant, etc.). Pace of play is fast and on time. Good beverage cart service while playing your round. Good 19th hole or grill room to go to after your round to commiserate about your round.

When you get tired of tanning by the pool and sipping margs, there are plenty of day trip destinations in the Coachella Valley waiting for you. Whether it’s Instagramming the colorful boulders of Salvation Mountain or expanding your mind inside the Integratron, the Coachella Valley offers no shortage of spots to visit, all within driving distance of your stay in La Quinta. Don’t be deceived, there’s much more to the Southern California desert than sandy tumbleweeds. So hop in your car, turn on the AC and get ready to explore.

Ò For a dose of the spiritual, Salvation Mountain is the place to go. Lovingly constructed and cared for by Leonard Knight until he passed away in 2014, Salvation Mountain is 50 feet of adobe, straw and donated paint along with some found objects. The painted mounds and grottoes of Salvation Mountain are Leonard’s reminder to visitors that “God is Love” and beauty is best found through simple devotion. Now, Salvation Mountain Inc. preserves and displays Leonard’s masterpiece, so visitors can continue their pilgrimage to the beloved murals. Be sure to bring some paint in Leonard’s honor. Love Is All You Need: Leonard Knight originally envisioned Salvation Mountain as a patchwork hot air balloon to spread his message of love.

Ò Declared a national park in 1994, Joshua Tree has 12 nature trails, five day hikes and two riding and hiking trails. Park rangers lead “I Speak for the Trees” walks, where visitors can learn about the park’s iconic (and namesake) trees. You can also explore the backcountry roads by mountain bike or 4-wheel drive vehicle. This time of the year, the sun sets early in the park, around 5 p.m., giving you a better chance to observe the desert’s nocturnal wildlife: bighorn sheep, kangaroo rats, coyotes, snakes and black-tailed jackrabbits. At night, you’ll also have a chance to view the Milky Way without the interference of city lights.

Ò Follow the good vibrations toward the white desert dome and you might think you’ve stumbled upon a second Griffith Observatory, but actually this is the Integratron. Nowadays, the Integratron is primarily used for 60-minute sound bath sessions, in which crystal bowls and music provide sonic healing. Musicians, astronomers, yoga and meditation groups, scientists and sound therapists all flock to the Integratron. George Van Tassel, engineer and UFOlogist, was partly inspired to build the Integratron by telepathic communication with Venusian extraterrestrials.

Winter Is Coming: Tuesday, Dec. 22 is the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year. Use this chance to view the Orion constellation and nebula, which is best seen in December.

During the winter months, the Panamint Mountains are often snowcapped and spring and summer paint the valley in droves of wildflowers. A trip to Death Valley calls for being extra bad: driving along Badwater Road, checking out the salt flats of Badwater Basin (which is the lowest point in North America) and exploring the badlands. Zabriskie Point is the perfect sunset spot, and at night you can explore the sand dunes under a full moon or go star watching during the new moon. Dead Man Walking: Feeling spooky? Ò Sometimes an accident can lead to a good thing, like in 1905 when a leak in the Imperial County irrigation system created the Salton Sea. Nearly two decades later, the Salton Sea has become known as a hotspot for speed boat races and other aquatic sports. Each year, 1 million travelers visit the Salton Sea, which is California’s largest lake and the third largest saline lake in the nation. The Varner Harbor jetty lets fishermen catch unlimited amounts of tilapia and the Salton Sea is also a major destination for migrating birds. A Dash of Salt: Around 600 tons of salt are deposited into the Salton Sea each year by irrigation water from the Colorado River.

WRITTEN BY: NICK CIMARUSTI

alf an hour from La Quinta there’s a time capsule waiting to be unearthed: Palm Springs. While cities outside Coachella Valley have adopted generic tract homes over the years, Palm Springs has retained its trademark technicolor palette that attracts artists and visionaries from far and wide. Every year around President’s Day weekend, Modernism Week, an 11-day festival, celebrates the architects and designers behind the midcentury modernism movement that defines Palm Springs style. Modernism Week kicks off with an opening night party and gives visitors an insider look at the stories and families behind every building. Lisa Smith, executive director of Modernism Week, shares what to expect from this year’s festival (Feb. 11-21) and how best to enjoy the two-weekend excursion that’s worth taking a few extra days off work. (Hey, it’s educational!) Q: What’s your favorite part of Modernism Week? Lisa Smith: That’s a really loaded question, I hope you know! We have about 250 events, so it’s really hard to pick a favorite. I think the thing that I enjoy the most is the double-decker architectural bus tours. We bring in the big red buses from Los Angeles so people get to ride in this lovely open-air setting and they get a full city tour of the architecture of Palm Springs. And you get this unique bird’s eye view because you can peek over the high hedge walls in some of the more exclusive neighborhoods.

Q: How would you define midcentury modern? LS: Midcentury modern really has to do with architecture and design in that immediate post-World War II era that spans from the late ’40s into the late ’60s and it’s everything from architecture, industrial design, fashion, cars and vintage music— everything having to do with that period of design and lifestyle. Q: Why do you think midcentury modern design and architecture is such an iconic part of the Palm Springs area? LS: I think Palm Springs has a really special archive of authentic

midcentury modern architecture. These homes were built in the period as primarily weekend retreats for people living in Hollywood and Los Angeles. We have this wonderful treasure trove of architecture that has been protected and preserved over the years. So I think that’s what’s different than in a lot of communities where the buildings were torn down. Ours have been largely celebrated and restored. Q: What’s new in February for Modernism Week? LS: This year we will be taking tours to some other outlying communities and we’re

calling that our Outer Limits series. We’re going all the way to the Salton Sea and we’re also going a bit west to the Museum of Pinballs, which is in Banning and not open to the public. It’s an amazing private collection of over 900 restored and fully functional pinball machines. We’re looking at really expanding the boundaries of modernism in Palm Springs this year. Q: What are you most excited for during this year’s Modernism Week? LS: We’ll be giving a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars honoring an architect named Richard Harrison. He

was the business partner of Donald Wexler and their projects are very well known throughout the valley. So we’ll be honoring Richard Harrison as well as a midcentury modern architect who is still living, William Krisel. He is probably most known for his beautiful Twin Palms neighborhood, which he designed. We’re working with the neighborhood group to create a street naming dedication for him. It’s a great honor to acknowledge the work of these midcentury modern architects and to have their participation during the festival.

Exercising and Exploring La Quinta By Way of Pedego Electric Bikes

Ò

There’s no better way to explore the magnificent, sprawling La Quinta desert than by renting a bike from a favorite neighborhood shop, Pedego La Quinta Electric Bikes. You’ll really get a sense of the neighborhood and surrounding areas as you pedal your way through the beauty and culture all around you. Bryan Newman and his team will be more than happy to assist you in choosing the right bike and helping you get started. If you’re new to the world of electric bikes, you may have a few questions and concerns before getting started. Newman is kind enough to answer any questions and help you get on track for your journey. Pedego La Quinta Electric Bikes offers guided tours, themed group rides and progressive dinner rides that can be scheduled or set up as a private event. Here’s what you need to know and why you should be excited about your next adventure.

Q: How do electric bikes work? BN: Pedego bikes run on a 500watt rear hub motor with lithiumion batteries to give you the best performance. Throttle assist bicycles are simply pedal bikes, but can be ridden like a scooter, cutting the use of the chains, which makes it a great safety feature in case of any problem. Pedal assist bikes are activated with an LCD screen and sensors in between both pedals.

“We’re looking at really expanding the boundaries of modernism in Palm Springs this year.”

Q: Are you still getting exercise with these bikes, though? BN: This system promotes exercise. All you do is turn the screen up or down, letting it know you need help, and as you pedal it will help you slightly or abundantly.

—LISA SMITH

Q: Which parts of Modernism Week are the most popular? LS: Definitely the bus tours are the most popular; they sell out pretty quickly. There’s the tours of the Sunnylands centers and gardens, which is the Annenberg estate and property in Rancho Mirage. We’ll have probably close to 30 neighborhood tours and the guests actually get to go inside these private residences, which is a wonderful thing, to get to meet the homeowners. And the nighttime parties are always one of the things that sell out pretty quickly as well.

Q: What’s the trickiest part of putting together Modernism Week? LS: Probably not blowing it into a month-long event. That’s the temptation because there’s so many wonderful events and tour opportunities. I think the trickiest part is the scheduling so that we’ll have multiple tours, lectures, events and programs going on throughout the day. We really want to give people the opportunity to do everything that they want to. We’ve maxed out every hour that we can and yet people come back for more. We haven’t reached that limit yet.

Q: What are the benefits of an electric bike over a traditional ride? BN: The benefits of a Pedego versus a regular bike are its stability, along with being able to ride much further than you would on a regular bicycle. Q: What are some of the best places to ride the bikes to in the area? BN: La Quinta is by far the best place to ride a Pedego, from Old Town La Quinta to Bear Creek Trail. The area is beautiful and safe for beginners and experienced riders. Q: Are any specials available at the shop? BN: During summer season we have rent one, get the second free, weekly/ monthly rental deals, free delivery and pick-up for rentals and service, and year round, free promotional items are given with the purchase of any bike. Tours are also available during cooler months.

Q: What are the best times to rent bikes? BN: The best time to rent a Pedego is from October to May, although they do make it enjoyable to ride in the hotter months as well. Q: Can anyone rent a bike? BN: You must be at least 16 years of age to ride a Pedego, but there are options like the Cargo Stretch and the Tandem to fit your little ones with you. Q: What made you want to start this business? BN: The reason I decided to get into this business was because the quality of Pedego is amazing, and the support the headquarters has to offer is as good as its bikes! Also, being a local, I wanted people to enjoy the desert in a different way, see things they wouldn’t see if it was on a regular bike, explore and go further. Q: How did it all come together? BN: I was introduced to the product in January 2015 and simply knew it was the type of business I wanted to get into. Everything took off from there. Q: What made you open your shop in La Quinta? BN: I chose to open my store in La Quinta because I am a resident and absolutely love the area. The rapid speed the city is growing and the fact that people come here to spend half of their time lets me know how valuable La Quinta is. Q: What is your favorite thing about your neighborhood? BN: My favorite thing about the neighborhood is the people. There is such a sense of community here; you feel safe and welcome.

Q: What kinds of bikes are available for rent at your shop? Bryan Newman: Well, we actually have three different bikes available for rental: pedal bikes, throttle assist bikes and throttle/pedal assist bikes. They come with different battery options to accommodate the needs of any rider.

he nonprofit Living Desert Zoo & Gardens promotes desert conservation through education, preservation and appreciation. It’s easy to appreciate all this impressive attraction has to offer, from gardens that represent over 1,400 different species of plants, to hiking trails, to an authentic replica of a Northeast African village, or the Living Desert’s live, lifelike dinosaur show. The Living Desert has something for everyone. Even if you’re not an aspiring botanist, zookeeper or paleontologist, you’ll walk away having learned something cool—and who doesn’t love unleashing their inner kid every once in a while? Due to the expansiveness of the park, we recommend you treat yourself and your friends to a shuttle ride with a private driver. The shuttle will take you to the exhibits and attractions faster, and the driver has insider knowledge when it comes to what’s new and exciting or what events are happening at the park when you visit. The Private Safari and Boxed Lunch package—complete with a private guide—is also a great way to take in the park. No matter how you do it, you’ll love exploring this Palm Desert gem, and you’ll feel good about the fact that your $19.95 general admission fee is going right back to nature.

Book an animal encounter. The Safari Tour, which includes park admission, a guide and personal tram, and a tour of the zoo’s exhibitions—including the state-of-the-art animal hospital—is a mustdo. But the highlight is undoubtedly the tour’s animal encounter, which grants you 30 minutes of up-close-and-personal time with an animal of your choosing and its keeper. Feedings and trainings are available on select tours and only during select times.

Take in the zoo’s plein air art collection. The zoo boasts an impressive collection of 49 paintings by 22 artists, some of whom are world-renowned California artists.

The collection reflects the popular French Impressionist style of painting en plein air, which many Californian artists adopted at the beginning of the 20th century to capture the picturesque California coastline. The exhibition includes works from the 1900s to the late 1930s—14 of which depict the Coachella Valley—and it’s located in the Stephen B. Chase Administration Building.

Check out the Living Desert’s model trains. There are currently more than 3,300 feet of track laid for the Living Desert’s awe-inspiring model train display. A team of Living Desert volunteers built the entire railroad, along with the world’s longest G-scale trestle, which is

Pack your sneakers and a bottle of water and get some exercise before you take in the exhibits. The view makes it worth the effort. Visit the Wildlife Hospital and Conservation Center. This state-of-the-art facility was built in 2002 to provide top-notch medical care for the zoo’s animals and an educational opportunity for the zoo’s guests. Here, you can do everything from watching an animal’s medical procedure or examination and learning about the zoo’s animal care practices, to viewing snake skins, antlers and horns, to taking in interactive exhibits. Catch a showing of Zoorassic Park. This recently opened attraction offers a 25-minute live stage show that features what the zoo calls a “trio of Hollywood-caliber dinosaur characters.” The life-like dinosaurs were designed by the Chiodo Bros., a Hollywood creature-making company whose works have also been featured in films like Elf, Critters and Gremlins. Don’t forget to take a selfie with the enormous tyrannosaurus rex, which growls, stomps and blinks, and is an impressive 15.5 feet long from nose to tail.

Take a ride on the endangered species carousel, Marilyn’s Merry-Go-Round. Another excellent selfie opportunity exists at this attraction, which features 30 of the animals represented at the Living Desert. Catch a glimpse of the elusive roaring cat at the Monarch of the Desert jaguar exhibit. Visit the largest cat native to the Americas: the jaguar. Jaguars are rarely seen in the wild, and this exhibit provides an opportunity for up-close viewing of this mysterious creature. You’ll be led along a subtropical forested trail as you journey through this themed exhibit into an abandoned silver mine, past rusty trucks and an empty miner’s cabin. This exhibit is fascinating because it parallels the jaguar’s native habitat, where the desert meets the tropical deciduous forest of southern Sonora.

Take a safari at the Village WaTuTu. Ever dream of going on safari in Africa? Well, you don’t have to go far to experience the thrill and beauty of safari while you’re visiting the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens. At Village WaTuTu, you can observe an impressive selection of animals such as hyenas, leopards, tortoises and camels. Village WaTuTu is also a perfect place to taste African regional cuisine or grab an ice cold beer, or even shop—the Kumbu Kumbu Marketplace offers an exotic array of handcrafted African goods, such as beads, hand-painted fabrics and jewelry.

LA QUINTA COVE TO LAKE CAHUILLA TRAIL Distance: 2.9 miles Experience Level: moderate Elevation change: 548 feet Ò This hike is perfect for early risers, as the trail is very exposed and offers little shade, making it one hot hike in the afternoon! This beautiful but fairly short hike offers spectacular views, giving you a little bit of everything to look at on the trail: Mountain views, a peek at the Quarry Golf Course and the picturesque sight of Lake Cahuilla. Don’t be tempted to sneak onto the green for a quick nine, though; accessing the golf course from the hiking trail is strictly prohibited! With amazing views of the Coral Reef Mountains and Santa Rosas, we’re sure you will want to stay the course from La Quinta Cove to Lake Cahuilla Trail. BEAR CREEK OASIS TRAIL: Bear Creek Canyon Trail and Bear Creek Trail (aka Cave to Palm Oasis) Distance: 4.5 miles Experience Level: Bear Creek Canyon Trail, advanced; Bear Creek Trail, beginner/intermediate Elevation change: 1,989 feet Ò The Bear Creek Canyon Trail is one serious hike and definitely not for the faint of heart. Only do this trail if you are an experienced hiker looking for a challenge. While this trail is one you’ll want to share with everyone, you’ll have to leave your four-legged companions at home; no dogs are allowed. At the end of the hike lies a palm tree oasis that is worth the trip—and no, it is not a mirage. There are two trails in the Bear Canyon Oasis: the Bear Creek Canyon Trail on the south end, and the northwestern Bear Creek Trail. The Bear Creek Canyon Trail is the more difficult of the two, and Bear Creek Trail is more suitable for those looking

for a leisurely experience. On Bear Creek Trail you will come across joggers, families with children and those taking a pleasant walk with stunning scenery. As Bear Creek Canyon Trail is a longer, more difficult hike, we recommend starting early to avoid the heat and providing yourself ample time to finish the hike.

BOO HOFF TRAIL Distance: 8.8 miles Experience Level: advanced Elevation change: 1,916 feet Ò The Boo Hoff Trail trail takes you deep into the wilderness, and is a great hike if you’re looking to escape technology—there’s no Wi-Fi or cell phone reception. This trail should only be tackled by experienced hikers. An equestrian group called the Desert Riders—the trail is named after the group’s founder—improved the historic trail to make it suitable for those looking for a great hike. The best time to hit this trail is a few days after rain, as the ocotillo desert plant comes to life with vibrant green leaves that brighten up the trail. And you’re in luck if you hope to glimpse wildlife: Bighorn sheep roam the area, which are great to post on your Instagram account, but please keep your distance! You will also see a plethora of barrel cacti and have incredible views of the Salton Sea, San Jacinto and San Gorgonio. If you are an experienced hiker looking for an even more difficult hike, continue to the Guadalupe Trail, but take plenty of supplies. If that’s not for you, stay on the Boo Huff trail and head toward Lake Cahuilla. Shuttles can be arranged for pickup at the end of the trail, or you can loop around Lake Cahuilla for a total roundtrip distance of 12 miles.

Messy Hands, Giving Hearts La Quinta’s Old Town Artisan Studio Provides Space for Art & Healing

ant to play in the clay? Or make your own glass jewelry? Or volunteer your time to a worthy cause and have fun doing it?

The Old Town Artisan Studio is serious about shaping hearts and minds through art. Founded on the premise that everyone benefits from the creation of art, the La Quintabased clay and glass studio, a nonprofit organization, strives to bring positive and enriching art experiences to the Coachella Valley community. Focusing on at-risk youth, seniors of limited means, and other underserved segments of the Coachella Valley community, the program brings art to those who need it most, and who are trapped by lack of transportation, financial ability or opportunity to experience the healing power of art. Old Town Artisan Studio offers an impressive selection of in-studio classes. For children and youth, there’s a free introductory class, a beginning level as well as an advanced youth ceramics class and a youth drawing class. Adult artists may explore mediums in popular classes that range from wheel throwing and hand building to sculpture, glass art and jewelry. There’s something creative for everyone. In 2014, the Old Town Artisan Studio provided almost 5,000 art experiences in the community and is on track to do more of the same this year. In July, the studio opened its new location at 78-134 Calle Tampico, Ste 160. The new space in the shopping center with the new Jules Market has increased visibility and lots of foot traffic. Beyond the classes in ceramics and glass at the La Quinta studio, the studio delivers classes off site at its partner facilities and other locations, including

The Old Town Artisan Studio serves the eastern Valley through Father’s Heart Ranch, Fred Young Labor Camp, the Ophelia Project, Coachella Valley Unified School District projects, Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella, Mecca, Indio, Palm Springs and La Quinta, DACE and Raices Cultura and more. The studio serves Desert ARC, AngelView and SafeHouse of the Desert, all resident populations with special needs or issues. projects, as well as a special needs class from La Quinta High School, and the studio is partnering with the Girl Scouts to provide outreach to several schools focused on girls at risk. For many of these people, accessing the Studio offerings is difficult. They might be unable to drive, too young to drive, or simply have no access to transportation. Public transportation in the eastern Coachella Valley (one of the key constituencies) is almost nonexistent, and most of its residents cannot afford private transportation. In order to reach those clients, the studio created an innovative studioon-wheels program that could take the experience

Through the generosity of two families, the studio purchased a new service van equipped with six potters’ wheels and all necessary supplies to offer classes off site. The studio on wheels will reach those most in need, those who have the least resources and those who are most at risk. Old Town Artisan Studio relies heavily on volunteers and donors for funding, but it’s clear when speaking with Art Director Stefania Ford that it’s a pretty incredible gig. “We have volunteers that come from National Charity League, mothers and daughters who volunteer together, roll out slabs of clay and create bisque pieces to

be painted by children. The volunteers definitely don’t have to know what they’re doing when they first start, but they learn quickly, and then they love the work, knowing it helps kids and seniors. We have an 83-year-old volunteer who comes in and wedges clay, makes birdhouses, and it gives her purpose and a sense of accomplishment. She’s an amazing artist and a very giving person. Working with clay has been one of the highlights of her life since she was a young woman. We also love when teachers volunteer, or anyone with teaching experience. It’s an amazing place, really a community,” Ford said. When asked how people can get involved with the Studio, Ford replied: “Take our art classes!

We are also always looking for people who are willing to go out in the van and volunteer with our various outreach programs. And there are classes and events and fundraisers happening all year round. Call us or come see us!” The studio hosts themed holiday workshops around almost every holiday, and workshops that are specific to the season. For Halloween, the studio has an event at The Living Desert; for Christmas, it’ll cut out hundreds of clay gingerbread men and try to reach every single nonprofit it works with to give everyone the opportunity to paint a Christmas ornament. She’s very passionate about the subject. “The kiln-based arts— ceramics and glass—are becoming lost arts in our modern culture. School administrators beset with budget cuts have stripped art education from the curriculum. Worried about potential liability issues, they’ve also removed kilns or shut them away to prevent problems because they don’t have teachers experienced in the art and science of kiln firing and management.

Q: How has The Chateau at Lake La Quinta branded itself as an essential Coachella Valley resort? Chris Chmielak: The Chateau has brought a unique element to the valley. There’s a sense of seclusion and privacy; it’s almost residential. The Chateau has a very upscale home feeling. We’re professionally designed. The design is known to be called chic or New French, very contemporary. We have a very comfortable but avant-garde feeling. One of the key features of The Chateau—really, compared to any other property throughout the entire Coachella Valley— is we are situated right on a 26-acre, man-made lake. All guest rooms have direct lake views, private patios or balconies. We have two bungalows that are slightly located off the main building that have balconies directly over the lake edge. We have a

24-hour pool and jacuzzi, which guests really enjoy. Q: How does The Chateau at Lake La Quinta cater to the diverse interests of its guests? CC: We are only 24 rooms, so we’re very boutique. With limited amenities, I think what we really do well to embrace people from all walks of life are the little details you’ll find throughout the property. When it comes to the linens in the rooms, we have spent many hours selecting the proper linens for the guest beds. The product amenities in the rooms are very special. We’re currently featuring Bvlgari White Tea. When you come in, there’s a lot of energy put into the vibe, the lighting, the music, the smell of the property. Q: When’s the best time to visit The Chateau at Lake La Quinta? CC: Our peak business times are November

through May 1, because the weather is so perfect in the desert. But again, in April, May, June, September and October our weekends are very busy. We have a lot of European travelers who like the heat. And people from San Diego or LA in the June gloom tend to gravitate toward the desert for some sunshine. Q: How is The Chateau’s history incorporated into the present? CC: The Chateau was built in about 1998. It was known to be a 13room bed and breakfast operated by an individual proprietor offering limited service. There was a little hot breakfast provided in the morning for a couple of hours and that was it. If you wanted lunch or a can of Coke you’d have to get in your car and drive down the 111. So, after renovations, we are now 24 rooms. The existing rooms were completely refreshed, and bathrooms and showers

totally redone. Now we’re a luxury boutique hotel, and with the transition in classification entitles you to a lot more service and food and beverage. Q: What sets The Chateau at Lake La Quinta apart? CC: The Chateau is a little bit of old and new. Our clientele is very eclectic. Now we’re getting younger people and older clientele in their 50s and 60s who are still feeling young. When the guests get here and check in, they say, “Chris, it’s beautiful online and we read the reviews and everything sounds really nice, but when you get here you have not fully understood how special The Chateau is.” We’re seeing a lot of repeat guests that are coming up every other weekend or once a month and telling their friends. Q: What’s new that we can expect to see at The Chateau at Lake La Quinta? CC: We’re opening

All these fruits will be incorporated in all the craft cocktails that will be assembled at the bar in Melange. We also have a self-serve wine dispenser. Our sommelier on property has handselected very special wines—wines that either have a special story or have a special rating—so the hotel guests have the opportunity to dispense wine at their leisure throughout their stay at The Chateau. The majority of the Melange seating is outside on our paver patio, which is right on the lake. The 45-acre resort offers an assortment of distinct casitas, suites and villas, and houses 41 pools on the vibrant-colored and lush grounds. For tennis fans, the best time might be during the BNP Paribas tournament that takes place just up the road from the resort. Music lovers might prefer to visit during the Coachella music festival, a short ride from the resort’s doors. Simply put, the best time to visit La Quinta Resort & Club is now! Q: How do you incorporate the storied history of La Quinta Resort & Club? TS: In the early 1920s, San Francisco businessman Walter H. Morgan was drawn to the region—a place natives referred to as the Land of Eternal Sun. He envisioned a tranquil retreat that captured the essence of quiet hacienda-style living. He purchased 1,400 acres from the native Cahuilla Indians, enlisted the renowned architect Gordon Kaufmann and scores of artisan craftsmen to make his dream a reality. Quaint casitas and a cozy dining room sprung up from more than 100,000 hand-formed adobe bricks and 60,000 roof tiles. Morgan called this place La Quinta. The brightest Hollywood stars came, seeking the solitude of La Quinta. Greta Garbo wanted to be left alone. Clark Gable came to party with friends. Frank Capra found inspiration here and returned to his Shangri-La of screenwriting again and again, eventually making it his home. Q: What sets La Quinta Resort & Club apart? TS: La Quinta Resort & Club is the original desert hideaway at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains and has been a refuge for Hollywood luminaries and travelers since 1926. While you could easily spend a week lounging beside one of 41 pools that sit steps from your door, the lush 45-acre resort offers so much more. La Quinta Resort & Club invites you to play the five championship courses, indulge in an afternoon at Spa La Quinta, savor creations of top chefs in one of seven restaurants, shop, play tennis or simply relish the luxury of doing nothing at all. Morning Glory

From Bed to Breakfast, the Best Morning Meals in the La Quinta Area WRITTEN BY: NICOLE FERA

Ò

It’s true what they say, ya know: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast jumpstarts your metabolism and fuels your body for the rest of the day. This meal also awakens your taste buds to something pretty special if you’re dining at these favorites spots around La Quinta. We’ve compiled a list of the best spots to kick off your day along with our favorite things on their menus. From the classics such as pancakes and waffles to crêpes and short rib benedicts, we’ve got something for everyone at places you’ll instantly love. Let’s remind ourselves why breakfast is the absolute best way to start another glorious day in the sun.

Louise’s Pantry

PANCAKES

Ò Louise’s Pantry is the place to visit when you’re longing for a home-cooked meal and friendly faces. This place is as historic as it is charming and has been serving amazing dishes to the community since its opening in 1946. Back then it was a simple lunch counter in Palm Springs, but has now grown into a family favorite in La Quinta. Though the location has changed, Louise’s is still as beloved as the day it opened. If there’s one thing you need to try while visiting this cozy establishment, it’s their pancakes. The pancakes are served light and fluffy

Make sure to order a stack or try one of their other delicious dishes and add a pancake on the side. Who says you can’t have your pancake and eat it, too? JAMBON FROMAGE CRÊPES

Ò If there’s one thing the French have given us, it’s some pretty amazing food—and Americans can’t get enough. Between French fries, French toast and French bread, it’s easy to fall in love with any foods with French in the title. And we can get a taste of France in Palm

Springs without having to jet to Europe (although we wouldn’t mind that plan, either). One of our favorite French dishes is a classic: the thin, tasty, mouthwatering crêpe. The French version of a pancake has never tasted as good as the ones being served at the adorable FARM restaurant in Palm Springs. From sweet to savory this place has got all your crêpe needs covered. Try one of their Jambon Fromage Crêpes, known to us as ham and cheese, or their Nutella & Fraises (strawberries) for something to brighten your day. If you’re feeling extra indulgent, order a savory crêpe as your meal and share a sweet one for a decadent dessert to end your meal just right. One bite and you’ll know you’ve struck gold at this quaint Palm Springs gem.

LOUISE’S PANTRY Feeling adventurous? Order the pancake sandwich, which comes with two pancakes, two eggs of any style and your choice between bacon and sausage. Breakfast overload complete.

CLASSIC BURRITO

Ò There are few things more appetizing for breakfast than a classic burrito. The burrito is all the best parts of a morning meal rolled into one easy handheld dish. Eggs, bacon, veggies, cheese, hash browns, you name it, and you can load it into a burrito that is not only satisfying but perfect for those of us who might need a hand in the early hours. Egg Café in La Quinta has one of the best burritos around to fuel you for the long desert day ahead. This place also has your health in mind, serving organic eggs and local fresh greens and fruit to accompany your meal. Another Egg Café favorite is the Avocado Surprise, which includes grilled avocado and basted egg. Egg Café is the place to visit when you want to grab something that’s going to fill you up without the guilt or the weighed-down feeling a great brunch can often bring. THE EVERYTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK

Ò Twenty6 is a restaurant you can find

inside the La Quinta Resort & Club with an impressive atmosphere. This beautiful restaurant has plenty of seating both inside and outside with a welcoming seat waiting no matter when you choose to dine. Although all the items on their menu are delicious, first-time diners need to feast on something special, known as Everything But The Kitchen Sink. This is the perfect meal to kick off a day of hiking and other outdoor activities. The Everything But The Kitchen Sink can also be your saving grace if you had a few too many the night before and are craving everything on the menu that you can fit inside your stomach. Be honest, we all know the feeling. This Twenty6 classic comes with corned beef, potatoes, peppers, onions, cheddar cheese and over easy eggs, and probably has your mouth watering just thinking about it. reminds us why we love breakfast and brunch so much. On the top floor of the El Paseo shopping center, this place has a great funky vibe that makes you feel at home the second you walk in. The good vibes will draw you in, but the amazing food will keep you coming back for more. This place is only open for breakfast and brunch from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, so you know they have their dishes down to perfection. They focus on delicious dishes, and they nail it in every category. Since you can’t possibly have everything on the menu (although it doesn’t hurt to try), we suggest ordering Mark’s Short Rib Eggs Benedict and getting a taste of the good life. This morning treat comes with two eggs on a housemade English muffin, short rib, housemade hollandaise and topped with sautéed arugula. Pair this baby with potatoes and you’ll have a meal that will keep you smiling for hours.

PB & C WAFFLE ’WICH

Ò Although it’s hard to pinpoint our favorite thing about Norma’s, the fact that you can order breakfast any time might take top prize. Norma’s is at The Parker Palm Springs, a beautiful resort that boasts amazing views both on and around the property. Norma’s has outdoor seating so you can begin or end your day with a cool breeze or some serious sun, depending on when you choose to visit. While you’re there, order their waffles, particularly the PB & C Waffle ’Wich. It’s a chocolate waffle that comes topped with peanut butter and toffee crunch filling. However, if you don’t possess a sweet tooth, you can get something simpler with their classic crispy Belgian waffle, which is equally as delicious. LOCALE MAGAZINE La Quinta 2015 - Eat/Drink

Copper Mining The Moscow Mule is the Perfect Beverage to Drink While Cooling Down in the Desert WRITTEN BY: NICOLE FERA

Ò

In recent years, an abundance of Moscow Mules have turned up in dive bars, restaurants, lounges and anywhere else locals visit for a happy hour drink. Moscow Mules are easy to spot because they’re usually served in copper mugs that make as much of a statement as the gingery, minty, lime-infused cocktail. Bartenders often have a love/hate relationship with this tasty drink because it requires a bit of TLC each and every time. hether you’re visiting La Quinta for a desert getaway or find yourself lucky enough to call this area home, you might need recommendations on where to bring one of your best friends. I’m not talking about your gal pal who loves to catch up over drinks or your buddies who are looking for a spot to watch the game. I’m talking about the one who is the first to greet you in the morning, always shows you unconditional love and is probably walking around your house right now cleaning up the crumbs from this morning’s breakfast. Yes, I’m talking about your No. 1 pal, your dog. More and more places have become pet-friendly over the years in La Quinta, and we want to share some of the best spots around with you. Here are the places you need to know about that are just as excited to have your dog visiting as they are you.

Ò Spencer’s Restaurant is one of the nicer places

in Palm Springs that will allow you to bring your dog on the patio if you don’t want to leave them home on date night. Maybe it’s the fact that the restaurant was named after the owner’s Siberian husky or simply the fact that they recognize that any experience can be enhanced with a best pal by your side. Danny Matz of Legacy Jewelry Co. is the Man to See About Jewels E X P E R T: DANNY MATZ C R E D E N T I A L S : OWNER, LEGACY JEWELRY CO. WRITTEN BY: RANDA AKEEL PHOTOGRAPHED BY: ADAM GENTRY

Legacy Jewelry Co. 78-010 Main St Ste 110 La Quinta, CA 92253 760.564.4900 legacyjewelrycompany.com

fter moving to California from Chicago in 2010, 28-year-old Daniel Matz opened his ideal jewelry concept in La Quinta in early October 2013. Legacy Jewelry Company is a highly customer-oriented jewelry store that takes pride in providing each client with unique fashion jewelry from all over the world and quality customer service. Matz’s expertise comes from growing up in the jewelry industry as well as being a Gemological Institute of America graduate. He believes the success of a jewelry store is based on trust and loyal relationships with his clients. An unbreakable positive attitude enabled him to make his dream jewelry company a reality. His extensive experience in the jewelry business is what makes Legacy Jewelry Company a legacy of its own by being one of the desert’s premier jewelry destinations.

Q: What has been your biggest strength when it comes to your role as the owner of Legacy? Daniel Matz: Connecting with people at the most basic level of what they need. I have a full-service store here, and that’s for a very, very important reason. I want to be able to do anything and everything that I can for any customer that walks in the door. Being that go-to guy is my biggest accomplishment for any customer that I can become that person for. I try to make the jewelry industry simple and approachable for people; this is not something they deal with or think about on a regular basis. Every time a customer comes in and walks out the door they should feel like, “I trust this person.” That’s what has kept me in the business. Call it some deep-seated, psychological need to please people, but that’s really what it’s all about. The best feeling I get is when somebody leaves my store happy. For me, that is the biggest accomplishment.

had a chain of jewelry stores in Chicago for about 30 years. I was raised in it and around it, so it has always been a part of my life. I went off to college and became a gemologist in Carlsbad and then everything fell into place. This was always the dream to have my own store.

Q: How did you get into the jewelry business? DM: I was pretty much born into it. My father

Q: What makes Legacy Jewelry Company different from other jewelry companies? DM: When you come in here, you’re going to get me. You’re not going to get one of my sales people, you’re going to get a chance to talk to me. If you’re not talking to me, you’re talking to somebody I trust implicitly. I think people appreciate that because they know that I am here to answer their questions. In any business like that, it is good to know a guy and when you know a guy in the jewelry industry it could mean saving a lot of money and headache. I like to imagine that when jewelry comes up in a conversation that my customers can say, “Hey listen, I know a guy that can take care of you.” My goal is to be “the guy.”

So even as a teenager and a very young adult, The Legacy Jewelry Co. was something that I was building in my mind even before it had a name, a storefront, anything at all. It was an idea, a compilation of ideas that I garnered from every customer I helped, every store I had the good fortune of working in. By the time I had the wherewithal to actually create this dream, I had a lifetime’s worth of ideas to pour into it. This isn’t a store, it’s the fruition of a young man’s dream to deliver the perfect jewelry concept. Q: What does your company thrive on? DM: I want to be your go-to for everything from repairs and custom jewelry, to the guy you come see before those big occasions throughout the year. So I thrive on the fact that my customer can sleep at night knowing they’ve got me, and I sleep knowing I can depend on them. Q: How do you fuel your drive to run Legacy day in and day out? Q: What is the meaning behind the name of your company? Any significance or history behind it being called “legacy”? DM: Legacy is an homage to my family. Legacy to me has become a very loaded word over the last few years. This store is a legacy of my family and is the legacy of the previous generation. You also realize that people’s jewelry is often a symbol of their legacy. It is what they pass down and keep for their entire life. Jewelry should be a lifelong purchase. Everyone wants to have a legacy, and jewelry is just one way to do that. Everything we do in my store is attribute to that. It is all in the name of Legacy. Q: What are your future goals and aspirations for Legacy Jewelry Company? DM: The goal of this store is to support a family and a town. That is a small business at its core. The goal is to be reputable, successful and to make a mark and become a hallmark in this town. It’s something I saw my family do back home in Chicago. By the time my dad retired, he had become a staple for the town, and that is where I see Legacy Jewelry Company in the future in La Quinta. I want to be “the guy” and the goal is to be a staple.

These Spas & Salons Have Everything You Need to Brave the Weather

La Quinta Arts Foundation’s Arts Under the Umbrellas featuring over 80 artists in Old Town La Quinta

WRITTEN BY: MARIE SPADA

Ò

When it comes to beauty, there are few things that destroy all of our hard work faster than the harsh elements of the weather: brutal heat and sticky humidity. Fortunately, La Quinta is full of experts who can help combat the heat so you look your best all year long. Whether your skin needs a pick-me-up, your hair needs damage control, or your nails are crying for a makeover, there is a spot that can keep you looking your best. Here’s where to go and the services to try at our favorite La Quinta spots for all of your beautifying needs.

Alankara Aveda Salon 78100 Main St La Quinta, CA 92253 760.777.8188 alankarasalon.com

Ò When looking at a photograph, what’s the fastest way to tell if it was hot that day? No, it’s not the sun or the clothes. It’s the hair—the frizzy, uncontrollable, horrific hair. At Alankara Salon, you have access to the best services and products available to keep your locks tamed and your selfie game on point. Alankara Salon offers an array of facials and hair treatments to help keep you looking your best when the temperatures are high and dry. For your hair, try their Damage Remedy Botanical Treatment. The treatment takes about 30 minutes, and they process and spray your hair, then wrap it in a hot towel with the treatment sealed inside. This treatment repairs any damage caused by overexposure, sun damage or chemical damage. When it comes to fighting the daily fight against humidity, try their Smooth Infusion Line of styling products aimed at combating frizz. The Smooth Infusion Style Prep protects your hair from the heat of the blow dryer and other styling tools, and provides 12hour humidity defense. If

you like to straighten your hair, try their Smooth Infusion Natural Straight product, which coats the cuticle of the hair to smooth down strands and prevent frizz and flyaways. If you need a lighter product, try the Smooth Infusion Nourishing Style Cream, which provides smoothness without extra weight. To keep your style in place, finish your look with the Smooth Infusion Control Force, which is a strong hold hairspray that allows you to brush your hair without it flaking. The spray also provides 12hour humidity defense. All Tressed Up Blow Dry & Beauty Bar 73-655 El Paseo Palm Desert, CA 92260 760.568.4526 getalltressedup.com

Ò The experts at All Tressed Up Blow Dry & Beauty Bar provide both makeup and hair services (but not cut or color—this is strictly a styling salon) to keep you looking your best all day and night. To keep damage to a minimum, these blow dry stylists do as much styling as possible with a brush and dryer, rather than relying heavily on other hot tools, such as a curling iron or straightener. For a popular style that is heat-proof and humidity proof, try their braids. Popular for Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals, braids are a great way to keep you cool by keeping your hair off your neck, and they hold

up well in the elements. If braids aren’t your thing, try beach waves for the perfect “I woke up like this” look that will last. All of their Kenra and Moroccan Oil products offer heat defense as well, so there’s minimal damage during styling, and the great outdoors will meet its match. Prestige Nails and Spa 79835 CA-111 Ste 104 La Quinta, CA 92253 760.863.5215

Ò With so many nail muses (Vanessa Hudgens, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, to name a few), it’s hard to know what the next nail trend is going to be. Round? Square? Almond? Oval? Coffin-shaped? (Yes, that’s a thing!) Prestige can do it all. For winter, the ladies at Prestige recommend going with orange-reds, silver, neutral colors or blush pink. Stuck on black? Put it away— black is so two years ago. For young clients, they are seeing an increase in the hot new coffin shape and flat stiletto nails (these nails are not pointed, so there’s no unintentional eye-gouging here, folks!). For more mature ladies, a rounded and more oval shape is the way to go. Acrylic and gel nails are still popular, but they don’t recommend going with the matte finish. Matte nails don’t come out as evenly as they do in photoshopped magazines, and if they add a third coat of polish, it gets too thick, so just give it a hard pass.

Spa La Quinta 49-499 Eisenhower Dr La Quinta, CA 92253 760.777.4800 laquintaresort.com/spa-fitness

Ò Spa La Quinta has an array of services sure to keep you looking your best in the hot, dry weather. With state-of-the-art amenities and services, consider Spa La Quinta your personal oasis. Hydration is key, and Spa La Quinta can keep you and your skin hydrated to keep your glow. For the whole body, try the Spa La Quinta Quench Ritual, a service that hydrates from head to toe with hand-harvested shea butter. The service begins with a hydrating scrub followed by a body wrap, then a hot oil scalp ritual and finally a massage. This treatment is the ultimate luxury; talk about heaven in a spa! For your face, try their HydraFacial Treatment. Impurities are extracted and dead skin cells are removed to reveal your most polished self. A variety of serums are used to cleanse, hydrate and moisturize the skin. This service is offered in 30-minute, 50-minute, or 90-minute treatments. Don’t forget to show your feet some love! The La Quinta Signature Pedicure soaks your feet in an aromatic cleansing bath, and then they scrub away dead skin cells with an exfoliating sugar scrub. Relax with a shea butter foot massage followed by a mask of hot towels and paraffin treatments. Top off your twinkly toes with nail polish and put your best foot forward!

ALANKARA AVEDA SALON : For a weekly or biweekly treatment you can do at home, try the Smooth Infusion Deep Conditioning Mask to keep your hair looking its best all year.

Native Knowledge: If you’re looking to cool off, try the Cold Plunge Fountain in the tranquil spa courtyard. Soothing fountains cascade around you, making for the ultimate in relaxation. PRESTIGE NAILS AND SPA: If you aren’t sure which style is for you, the ladies at Prestige are experts on all things related to nail trends, and they’ll get you all squared away (see what I did there?).

Ò Although most people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I would have to disagree and say that coffee comes first. Always. That’s why the first stop on your La Quinta journey is going to be Old Town Coffee, where you can enjoy more than just a great cup of java. The old town section of La Quinta is awesome because it is truly a picturesque little village area where you will feel right at home and take in all of the neighborhood’s beauty. You can enjoy some fresh organic caffeinated drinks, smoothies, bagels, quiches and other great breakfast snacks either inside or outdoors on their lovely patio. you’ve taken your dog for a nice, long walk or spent an hour enjoying the views around you. Now that you’re awake and ready, it’s time for breakfast. When you’re looking for a hearty, delicious meal in the morning, there’s only one place to visit and that’s Wilma and Frieda’s. This cozy little hot spot is a go-to for locals and visitors alike, which the food and atmosphere instantly confirm. You’re going to want to fuel up for a day of fun so make sure to get your fill. We suggest their short rib benedict, building your own fully loaded omelet or indulging in something sweet like thin-cut French toast. Desert Hills Premium Outlets 48400 Seminole Dr Cabazon, CA 92230 951.849.6641 premiumoutlets.com

Ò The Cabazon Outlets are 65,000 square feet of retail heaven, tucked in the desert between the San Rosa and San Gorgonio Mountains. Shopping with a view! The outlets are also set up in an open, outdoor space, which is one of the things I love about shopping in California: You can soak up the sun no matter where you are,

even on a shopping spree. The outlets have some of the biggest names that we all know and love, with prices you’d never imagine. Aside from having great deals, Cabazon Outlets also offers special packages for its loyal shoppers. I don’t know any other place where you can shop at discounted prices and enjoy additional savings with a Savings Card or Shop & Play Package. Both of these are available, along with additional information, at the customer service station. It’s definitely a wise investment to pick one up before heading into any of the stores because you never know what kind of coupons you might get and souvenirs you can find for those you left at home. The Oasis Poolside Bar and Grill has got you covered for both as you work on your tan and prepare for the rest of the day. Keep in mind that a hike is in your future so don’t drink yourself into a sleepy state, there’s lots more to come on this adventure! That’s why Burgers & Beer’s lively atmosphere and awesome happy hour menu are just what you need right now. Happy hour starts early, too, which is perfect for keeping today’s itinerary right on schedule. Happy hour is 3-7 p.m. here and includes food. Burgers & Beer provides drinks, a bite to eat (I’m always thinking of food) and a chill, laidback atmosphere where you can meet up with friends. However, this is your chance to gather everyone together for a refreshing Moscow Mule and get a hike planned so you will be enjoying the unforgettable desert sunset while you get your workout on.

Hike From La Quinta Cove to Lake Cahuilla la-quinta.org

Ò There are lots of great hikes in this area, but one of the most beautiful and best choices for a quick day hike begins at La Quinta Cove Oasis. If you follow the hiking trail to Lake Cahuilla, you will be hiking about five miles in total, a solid way to work off the food and drinks you’ve been enjoying all day. You will hike along the Santa Rosa Mountains as you make your way to the lake. This hike and others in the surrounding area are fairly easy, making them ideal to walk or bike and perfect for whomever would like to come along and take in the great outdoors. You can even bring your dogs if you’d like to make it a family affair. Just make sure to bring lots of water and your camera because you’re going to want to capture the moments as the sun sets along this awesome hike. Ò Now that you’ve worked up an appetite,

it’s time to keep the day going and head over to the Palm Springs Aerial Tram. This is the world’s largest rotating tramcar and that fact alone is enough reason to stop and check it out. I’m all about the best of the best and the views of the Chino Canyon at the top are definitely worth seeing. The ride up is only about 10 minutes, and you’ll be blown away once you get there. Plus, it’s another opportunity for a great meal. If you’ve had an opportunity to clean up after the hike, then you might want to take this time to dine at Peaks restaurant. This is a fine dining restaurant at the top of the tram that has delectable food and, of course, views for days. If you aren’t looking for something fancy, there is also the Coachella Valley Pines Café for a quick bite at the top or a drink at The Lookout Lounge. It’s nice to know there are options for how you want your evening to go. Either way, the views are what bring the people in and it’ll truly make you appreciate just how beautiful this desert valley is.

Organic, nitrogeninfused ice cream might be something you’re not familiar with, but you’re about to fall in love. No preservatives and no additives make this the freshest ice cream you’ll probably ever have. Nitroinfusions employees freeze the ice cream right in front of you with liquid nitrogen, and there’s an abundance of flavors to choose from. Not an ice cream person? Aside from possibly making a grave mistake, fear not. Nitroinfusions has lots of other desserts including a brownie sundae and amazing crêpes. Grab something sweet, recap the laughs and adventures you had on today’s amazing trip and head back to your resort for a well-deserved night of rest. You earned it.

HIKE FROM LA QUINTA COVE TO LAKE CAHUILLA: Although you want to enjoy the sun setting, make sure to time it out so that it’s happening as you are heading back to where you started. The hike isn’t strenuous, but you don’t want to be caught in the dark in unfamiliar territory. A flashlight is always a great idea in case you do find yourself wandering back after sunset.
