OPENAIRE

editor's note It’s hard to believe that exactly one year ago I was slurping down a Bloody Mary in my ski boots at the base of Big Bear Mountain. My only predicament at that point in time was one Bloody Mary or two? And then, wham. There is nothing like a worldwide pandemic to make your cocktail consumption worries feel petty. Fast-forward a few months and there we stood (six feet apart)—in the thick of it. Sadly, there is no Pandemic for Dummies book. And while this sh!t storm may have ripped the rug right out from under us, it surely didn’t diminish our sense of unity, creativity and will to create hysterical memes. We know what it feels like to be in it together. The sense of community, from neighborhoods to nations, has been nothing short of extraordinary. I’m proud to say that I work for a company that has fought in the trenches, right beside those who needed it most. We’ve helped local restaurant owners keep their businesses afloat, shop owners keep their doors open and numerous other SoCal businesses who needed a helping hand. We believe that now is the time for generosity.

Within the pages of this issue, you’ll find a foodie guide full of “awardwinning” family-owned restaurants that have worked hard to keep our dining scene alive and well. From the best breakfast in town to datenight destinations to dream about, this guide is an ode to Southern California’s diverse and innovative culinary community. (pg. 71) Flip beyond the guide to our shoppe section for our favorite clean beauty products (pg. 102), handcrafted jewelry (pg. 116) and an inside look at a plant company that’ll turn your thumb green. (pg. 118) Our alive and escape sections are chock-full of interior design tips, off-the-grid places to explore and chic hotels that’ll make you want to stuff your suitcase. (pg. 177) Wherever you find yourself this spring, I hope this magazine becomes your bucket list—a guide for your 2021 adventures. Whether it be taking your taste buds to a new restaurant, exploring a new neighborhood, remodeling your home or finding ways to support our local businesses, there is no better time to branch out, be generous and show gratitude. Happy reading!

Like most other companies, we had to pivot in 2020. Fredrik Eklund’s LOCALE cover shoot was no exception, where three of our team members attended the photo shoot outdoors, masked up and stayed sixfeet apart. The location, a stunning $38 million home in San Clemente that The Eklund Gomes Team has listed, was an ideal, openair and breezy set for the afternoon ahead. Coastal Cool • Eklund’s presence was felt throughout the whole day. He’s tall, put together, witty and kind. The New Yorker in him merges flawlessly with his new California-cool lifestyle. He cracked jokes in the different shoot locations, shouting from the balcony, “I feel like I’m Romeo on this balcony! I’m starting to feel like I should buy this home.” His fun personality brightened everyone’s mood. Ocean Views • With the entire shoot having to be outside, it couldn’t have worked out better; the property featured panoramic ocean views, a sparkling swimming pool, Mediterranean architecture and a grassy lawn with games. Surfers were riding the waves just below the home, and the sun was shining on everyone. “Even just being outside of the home was breathtaking! You had a sweeping, 360-degree view that left everyone on set in awe,” says production coordinator Lauren Lewellen.

San Clemente

That’s a Wrap • Concluding the shoot, Eklund was all-in to jump onto the floating swan in the pool— all while wearing a suit. It was definitely the highlight of the whole shoot, and Eklund agreed, exclaiming, “This is the best part of the day! Can we do it again tomorrow?”

Real estate mogul Fredrik Eklund is a force to be reckoned with. From being the No. 1 broker in New York to his major real estate expansion in California, it seems there isn’t anything Eklund can’t accomplish—all while still managing to succeed beyond belief. The 43-year-old Bravo TV star, who stars in the entertaining reality show “Million Dollar Listing New York,” made his move from the Big Apple to Los Angeles in July 2019. Since then, he’s been rapidly expanding his real estate business, The Eklund Gomes Team, in the Los Angeles area. This past fall, the team made their way down to Orange County—while it was bound to happen, the business decision came quicker than anticipated. “OC wasn’t in my immediate plans,” Eklund says. However, he received an email from eager real estate agents Seth Nelson and Ariana Gaffoglio; they met the next day at Hotel Bel-Air, and the connection was instantaneous. “I’m very intuitive; we instantly clicked. They felt like family right away,” Eklund explains. The Eklund Gomes Orange County Team was born just days after. “Now I’ve been down to Orange County once a week and selling a lot.” Orange County is, of course, one of the most expensive real estate markets in the country. The $38 million home in San Clemente listed by the team was the location for Eklund’s LOCALE cover shoot. While the home boasts incredible views, stunning architecture and exhibits a charming Mediterranean feel, the 450 linear feet of oceanfront is Eklund’s favorite aspect of the property. “With my help, we are looking to expand more down here [Orange County]. I’ll probably end up living down here one day!” he says. This year, he hopes to be the No. 1 team in Orange County, and they are already well on their way.

So, how did Eklund get to where he is today, selling some of the most sought after real estate in the country? His journey began in New York City. “All I knew was I wanted to be successful in New York. I was very drawn to the energy of New York... reinventing myself and working my ass off. But, I didn’t really have a plan,” Eklund recalls. He moved from his hometown of Stockholm, Sweden to New York City at the age of 25—without knowing anyone. After the move, his new friends in New York suggested he give real estate a shot. With two sides to his personality (one being an analytical and business side and the other being, as Eklund puts it, colorful and eccentric), it seemed that this was an ideal career path for Eklund. “You gotta have both [sides], I think. You have to entertain your clients; you have to make it fun and spread good energy—nobody wants to work with a lazy, angry broker!” Eklund states. He goes on to explain that the task of buying a house is stressful, and it’s his job to make it fun. “So, I got my license, and I was just trying it out. I have to say, I’m lucky in a way because New York—at the time—was very undervalued. It was about to see an incredible explosion in new development, pricing, activity...becoming almost the capital of the world at that time. This was in 2003 and 2004, [so a few years] after Sept. 11, the city was really coming back strong, and I just jumped right into it. I was lucky,” Eklund explains.

....New York or LA? • “LA,” Eklund bluntly states.

Vacation Vibes

• When it comes to time off, Eklund shares, “My favorite place in the world is The Brando resort in Tahiti. We go there multiple times a year—that is my dream place!”

“It is difficult, and it can be exhausting because I take it so seriously. I’m super competitive, a perfectionist and a control freak, so for me, why go into a market if you’re not going to basically be No. 1?”

B

—Fredrik Eklund

But his success isn’t all attributed to just luck. Eklund studied at the Stockholm School of Economics before moving to the US, and he even founded an internet company and worked at an investment bank back in his past life. A few years after his arrival in New York City, he co-founded The Eklund Gomes Team at Douglas Elliman in 2010 with John Gomes, which now has offices in Manhattan, Beverly Hills, Brooklyn, Miami and Laguna Beach. It seems as if he’s always had the grind and grit it takes to prosper. Across the country, from coast to coast, Eklund manages to stay on top. In markets like New York City, Miami Beach and Beverly Hills—where real estate is competitive, lavish and jaw-dropping— Eklund succeeds. He sells luxurious homes to some of the most influential people in the world. “It is difficult, and it can be exhausting because I take it so seriously. I’m super competitive, a perfectionist and a control freak, so for me, why go into a market if you’re not going to basically be No. 1?” Eklund says. He does it right and does it to be the best—not just the best for himself, but the best for his clients across the various markets. Eklund recalls the feeling of being scared when he moved to the States and then having the same feeling when making the cross-country move to California. His advice is to just do it; go after your dream. “Usually, it’s not people who say no to us; it’s our own insecurities and our own, maybe laziness [that’s in our way, which makes us] feel content where we are,”

Eklund says. “I think everyone is walking around with this dream, and you just gotta do it. It’s very difficult and it’s very scary, but in my opinion, it always pays off because if it doesn’t pay off the way that you thought it would, it will pay off in a different way,” Eklund says. In addition to having an astounding career, Eklund is the proud father of threeyear-old twins, Milla and Freddie. While his career and personal life are now in harmony, it took a couple of years for him to get to this point. “It was not easy—I’m not going to sugarcoat it. I’m lucky because I have such a good team at work; [my husband] Derek is amazing; I have nannies—I have an army of assistance. I could never do this without all of those people,” Eklund says. “The kids grow up so fast; they have to take priority over work because work can always be done at a later stage—or in my case, an earlier stage—but the kids, I only have one shot at.” Eklund’s optimistic outlook, larger-thanlife personality and diligence have led him to this prosperous point in life. He’s someone who truly lives life to the fullest, diving into adventure and lighting up a room. “This life is so short; it’s like a blink. I think we’re given a limited period of time to really enjoy ourselves but also to really experience a lot of different emotions and things—and not material things. So, how are you going to do that? How are you going to take advantage and really feel gratitude for the time that you’re given?” Eklund expresses. He’s found his cool California groove and finally feels at home in the Golden State. Only time will tell what the next chapter holds for Fredrik Eklund.

Last year, we moved into packaging beer (rather than just draft). As we spread our footprint, people will be able to find our beer on shelves throughout San Diego and beyond. For more info on our evolving list of local retailers, visit www. latchkeybrew.com/retailers.

“Latchkey is unique on three levels: our approach, our variety and our maniacal focus on quality. From the onset, Latchkey was designed to be a local business with a vision to serve the San Diego and adjacent markets.”

SOMETHIN’ TO TACO ‘BOUT

Ò Royal Rooster in Mission Bay took over what used to be a hole-in-the-wall breakfast and burger joint that served the people getting on and off fishing boats. Now it’s owned by Chef Cory Rapp, who is fulfilling his dream of selling tacos on the water. Cory worked under Michelin Chef Thomas Keller, so his version of “tacos” is special and usually consists of meat that’s been smoked for hours, and just about everything is made from scratch. www.royalroostersandiego.com

HAPPY HOUR HOT SPOT

Ò High Dive in Bay Park is owned by former craft beer pro Ryan Glenn, so you know the beer is good. As an “upscale dive bar,” their menu features bar food with a twist. Everything from their burgers to their Chicago beef is superb, but if you’re feeling adventurous, order The Kraken—two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (the buns), bacon, gorgonzola cheese, caramelized onions and a half-pound burger patty! www.highdivesd.com

TAKING THE LEAD

Ò Owning a business is challenging and stressful, but there is a lot of joy in creating something from nothing and helping provide jobs to the community. While it sounds great to “be the boss,” it’s not for everyone. Knowing that your decisions and actions have real repercussions that affect people’s livelihoods is daunting, but at the end of the day, it’s all worth it. www.latchkeybrew.com

LOVE FOR THE CRAFT

Ò The San Diego craft beer community has over 200 breweries, making it the most saturated craft beer market in the world. In any other industry, this would create a cutthroat (eat or be eaten) competitiveness. But because this is a labor of love for many people involved and everybody takes a lot of pride in their work, it is more supportive than anything else. We may not share recipes, but at the end of the day, we stand behind one another. www.latchkeybrew.com

Ò Tucked behind the airport on Harbor Island, Tom Ham’s Lighthouse is a San Diego institution that has been around for decades. Not many locals are familiar with it, but the ones who are do swear by it. Due to where it sits, you look back across the San Diego skyline rather than looking out across the Pacific. Most people know it for its brunches or event space, but the view is amazing, the food is superb and their staff always remembers faces.

Best Mexican THIS ALL-NEW TAQUERIA IN TUSTIN IS BRINGING LATIN FARE TO FOODIES ACROSS OC

It is easy to find greattasting Mexican food in any area of Orange County, but Chefs Philip Tangonan and Peter Kwock are going straight for your heart (and taste buds). These chefs want to make it clear they put their heart and soul into every dish they serve at the all-new Hermosa Taqueria in Union Market Tustin. “The world is in need of love right now. We are concentrating on sharing love for our community with really great food and hopefully, that will bring comfort.”

Written By: Erica Johnson • Photographed By: Niki Cram

I

Chef Tangonan previously worked at popular OC spots like The Cannery in Newport Beach and Catal Restaurant in Downtown Disney. Chef Kwock’s passion comes from cooking for family, and his love for Latin cuisine started from enjoying the traditions of friends and family. The two bonded while working side by side, catering for private dinner parties and events, which then led to the perfect creative partnership.

Food • Hermosa Taqueria demonstrates a respect for Latin food while crafting its own individual recipes. Dig into an assortment of Latin cuisine with a twist!

Decor • Traditional with a colorful interior, Hermosa Taqueria will make you feel as though you just stepped off the plane in the Riviera Maya—especially when you see the beautiful ‘Belleza Brava’ portrait on the wall by artist RL Parole.

Best Birria Tacos

With the opening of Hermosa Taqueria, these two culinary masters have the opportunity to showcase their talents and extensive knowledge of Latin food. In addition to great tacos, you’ll get to enjoy

Price • Take advantage of the restaurant’s daily specials with tacos starting at $4.50. Otherwise, you can expect fairly moderate pricing.

housemade salsas, hand-pressed tortillas, al pastor, Birria—all the best Latin flavors to satisfy any and all emotions. If you think Hermosa Taqueria is just another taco shop, think again. “We keep what’s traditional, but we like the idea of making unfamiliar things familiar,” Tangonan explains. Get ready for tortillas with Gochugaru (Korean Chili Flake), mild roasted tomato and hot aji amarillo salsa and even duck confit pupusa with curtido (pickled cabbage salad). There are also vegetarian options for those looking to keep it plant-based. “We want people to see how passionate we are about our food,” says Tangonan. So if you’re ready to try something new, Hermosa Taqueria is the place to chow down. 82 LOCALE MAGAZINE

LOCAL INSIGHT

• Prefer a more traditional taco? Then keep it classic with Tu Madres’ carne asada or pollo asado tacos, which come topped with grilled onions, cilantro and lime.

• While Mexican food tends to air on the heavier side with refried beans and cheesy enchiladas, the Tacos al Pastor offers a flavorful, yet lighter approach to the traditional. Savory shredded pork coupled with the sweetness of caramelized pineapple chunks give these tacos a unique piquancy, while the pickled red onion and crispy leeks work to round out the flavor, adding a nice crunch.

• The mind behind the restaurant (and its tasty food) is local chef and entrepreneur Andie Hubka, who now owns a total of four culinary concepts in the desert. While her free time is sparse, she still manages to give back to her community, working closely with organizations like FIND Food Bank. Best Takeout THESE LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS’ FARM-TO-FRONT DOOR CONCEPT IS THE FRESHEST IN TOWN Written By: Andrew Smith | Illustration By: Vicente Martí Solar Photographed By: Kenneth Alexander Scott Farm-to-table has grown in popularity in recent years. But what happens when the tables disappear? Outside-the-box thinking led two local valley entrepreneurs to an inside-the-box solution...literally! Tony Marchese was feeling the effects of the pandemic at his restaurant, Trio, in Palm Springs. “I had to start looking at alternative business models,” he explains. He teamed up with local farmer, Mark Tardos, who was similarly confronted by the drop in demand from restaurants. They came up with CV Harvest Box. “It’s farm-tofront door,” explains Marchese, a service that collects produce from a multitude of local growers, packages them, and ships them out to customers' homes. “Some products are picked on Thursday and delivered on Friday,” adds Marchese. “You can’t get any fresher!” In a global, chain-store economy, we tend to forget the bountiful agriculture that exists in our own backyard. With three growing seasons, the Coachella Valley is blessed with an abundance of fruits, vegetables and dates. “We’re very lucky to have some amazing local products,” adds Marchese. It’s a billion-dollar industry that employs around 12,000 people.

Marchese dubs the program “locally integrated,” elaborating: “eat local, buy local, support local. Everything's about trying to keep the money right here within the valley.” Additionally, it allows consumers to dodge the crowds, delivering a treasure chest of the finest, freshest produce each week. Sample mixes include dates, Indian eggplant, live cilantro, Dino kale, Ruby Red grapefruits, Fuyu persimmons, microgreens, organic pomegranates and strawberries. “We’ve also started adding small businesses to bring a wider variety,” adds Marchese. Ancillary offerings include baked goods, cookies, salsas, sauces and oils as well as prime steaks. Some ingredients are even bundled into complete DIY Moscow mule and Bloody Mary kits.

Best Produce

Every box also comes with a featured recipe, or you can explore a multitude of local chefs on social media that put their own weekly CV Harvest Box deliveries to work. “It’s a fun project, and it just keeps growing,” enthuses Marchese. With its emphasis on the local economy and ecology, there’s so much to respect about CV Harvest Box. It’s also guaranteed to brighten up your kitchen and culinary creativity.

On the Side

• One of Marchese’s side projects is his role as coproducer of the Palm Desert Food & Wine Festival. “It’s awesome to bring all the celebrity chefs to the Coachella Valley,” he explains.

Delicious Donations

• Beyond supporting local agriculture, CV Harvest Box also donates food to the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, local school districts and organizations for low-income farmworkers.

Humble Beginnings

• Marchese began his restaurant career in Chicago when his father, an Italian immigrant, helped him open a pizzeria.

SOMETHING TO SHOW

I love that I am getting to build something I love with my mom that I know would make my grandparents so proud.

3 LOCAL BUSINESSES I LOVE WORKING WITH: 1. Frolic and Sage 2. Black Love 3. Your Sunday

CLOSE TO THE HEART

Ò Feels like a shameless plug, but Post 21 truly is my favorite small business. It started as me and my mom building the place we wanted to shop, and it has turned into much more. Post 21 is truly making it easier to shop Black and is helping to change the narrative around what to expect from Black creatives.

COFFEE + CREATIVES

Ò Hilltop Coffee and Kitchen is one of my favorite businesses to support. It’s cool, the food is bomb and it gives creatives a place to go and zone out. My favorite thing to order is the short rib grilled cheese. But when I want to be fake-healthy, I go with avocado toast. Pro tip: add shrimp! www.findyourhilltop.com

VERY VINTAGE

Ò Melrose Trading Post is one of the best places to shop in Los Angeles. You can’t haggle here like you would at your typical flea market, but you get a very LA vibe that you also won’t get at your typical flea market. I love that it takes place once a week; the food is great, and they have music to entertain the kids while you eat. www.melrosetradingpost.org

STAY AT JUNE

Ò Hotel June has a dope midcentury modern vibe with great food and a chill pool. It’s a redo of a hotel I remember partying at when I was in college. So for it to be so cool now as an adult makes me giggle and enjoy it even more. Order the uni tacos; they are not something I’d normally order, but they are bomb. www.thehoteljune.com

LET’S GO TO THE BEACH, BEACH

Ò I love grabbing a bite at Playa Provisions then taking my ice cream to go and walking on the beach. The food and vibe here are great, and I love how hidden it is. The best part about this place is really just its location and proximity to a great residential part of the beach. Local tip: they have a speakeasy in the back. www.playaprovisions.com

“Being exposed to all sorts of reconstructive surgery, you’re able to really open your mind and see how you can create things and solve problems in very challenging situations.” —Dr. Grover

DR. GROVER Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and Founder of Grover Aesthetics

With over 25 years in the business, Dr. Sanjay Grover, MD and FACS has cemented himself as one of the top plastic surgeons in Orange County. A specialist in aesthetic surgery of the face, nose, breast and body, Dr. Grover is known for his deep expertise in cosmetic procedures and a courteous demeanor. The board-certified surgeon offers an array of plastic surgery, medical spa and laser treatments at his practice, Grover Aesthetics. Whether through a breast enhancement or tummy tuck, Dr. Grover takes deep pride in his ability to help patients achieve their desired appearance. 106 LOCALE MAGAZINE

The Orange County native found his calling in the medical field early on. The son of a surgeon, Dr. Grover always had a passion for science and being able to help people. As an undergrad at UCLA, he served as an EMT, which further sparked his interest in medicine. Dr. Grover considered pursuing cardiac surgery or orthopedic surgery, until he discovered the world of plastic surgery during medical school at the University of California, San Diego. “When I rotated on plastic surgery during my third year, I just found [it] to be really exciting,” says Dr. Grover. “You’re exposed to all aspects of the human body from the face to the toe; men and women; adults and kids; and everything from very technical, highly challenging reconstructive surgeries to all aspects of cosmetic surgery. I’m very particular and type A in my nature, so plastic surgery seemed to be a nice fit.” Dr. Grover completed his residency training in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery at Stanford University before taking an additional fellowship in Aesthetic and Oculoplastic Surgery at Paces Plastic Surgery Center in Atlanta. His extensive training and exposure to different medical situations provided him with valuable skills and learnings that he utilizes today. “Plastic surgery is a blend of technical skills and artistry,” he explains. “Being exposed to

all sorts of reconstructive surgery, you’re able to really open your mind and see how you can create things and solve problems in very challenging situations. That’s why I think it was a really nice transition over to cosmetic surgery.” After his training, Dr. Grover opened a practice in Beverly Hills with another surgeon and gained experience working with celebrity clients and performing rhinoplasty. The doctor and his wife, Nina Grover, Esq., decided to relocate to Orange County to raise their family. He then founded Grover Aesthetics in Newport Beach and has been operating this private practice for the past 21 years. Grover Aesthetics provides a full collection of services for the face, nose, breast and body, including facelifts, liposuction, microneedling and injectables. While the center offers a variety of surgical and noninvasive options for men and women, Dr. Grover says his most requested services include rhinoplasty, breast augmentations, mommy makeovers and body contouring. Grover Aesthetics also prioritizes expanding its capabilities by using new techniques and integrating new technology and devices. For example, Grover Aesthetics was the first Orange County center to offer Emscuplt Neo, a noninvasive body contouring technology that removes fat and builds

Out of Office • Off the clock, Dr. Grover loves to spend time with his family. He is learning how to surf with his sons and enjoys tennis, skiing and pickleball. Date Night • The Grovers love to travel and dine in restaurants around town, such as Marché Moderne, Maestro’s Ocean Club and CdM. Staying Involved • Dr. Grover is a member of societies like The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and The American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He enjoys his involvement in these organizations because it enables him to interact with leaders in his specialty and discuss the latest techniques. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work • Nina Grover has played an important role in running and managing the practice throughout the years as a Plastic Surgery and Medspa Practice Director. She also helped design the look and feel of the new office and AAAASFaccredited surgical center, Grover Surgical Arts.

muscle. “We are a one-stop shop [for] plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery aspects as well as non-surgical aspects,” says Dr. Grover. He spends three days a week performing surgeries and uses the other two days for consultations, post-operation appointments and injections. Dr. Grover relies on his plastic surgery and medspa team to provide a high level of client service, care and enjoyment through all stages of the patient’s journey. “The level of quality that exists [at Grover Aesthetics] and the attention to detail is really indicative of how we want someone’s plastic surgery or non-surgical experience to be,” says Dr. Grover. By focusing on providing excellent patient service, he was able to grow his business by word of mouth and establish himself as a top surgeon in the area. Grover Aesthetics’ attention to detail and patient care has especially shined through during the pandemic where business has been busier than ever and the waitlist has never been fuller. “[People] are working from home now and not traveling for work, so they have the time to recover [as well as] the funds available to help cover the cosmetic surgery,” Dr. Grover explains. While business is booming, he relishes these opportunities to deeply connect with and assist patients. With 25 years of experience in his profession, Dr. Grover still eagerly looks towards the future, which involves deepening his expertise with novel technologies and techniques, strengthening relationships with industry leaders and continuing to make a difference in his patients’ lives. “The most rewarding part, by far, is being able to help—through surgical and nonsurgical operations—change a person’s life, their level of confidence and self-esteem. You can really make a huge impact on someone’s life,” he says.

Spruce Up Your Home (and Mood) With Plants Delivered Directly to Your Door WRITTEN BY: LAUREN MCCARRAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: KELLY BOITANO AND THE SILL

Houseplant enthusiasm has been steadily on the rise, especially now that people spend more time at home. “Plants make people happy,” says Eliza Blank, founder and CEO of The Sill. Her words are simple yet deeply truthful. Plants provide a connection that many people need right now. The Sill offers a one-stop shop to buy your new green friend, learn how to keep it alive and join a like-minded community. Plants can be ordered online and delivered directly to your door.

“The Sill is not only about home decor or just selling you plants; we’re here to connect people with plants,” Blank says. She believes happiness stems from the relationship that develops from taking care of your houseplants. Growing up, Blank’s mother and grandmother were avid gardeners. She describes plants as the backdrop to her life. Before becoming a houseplant connoisseur herself, Blank was a brand manager in New York City. When she moved from her hometown in Massachusetts, nature’s absence in the concrete 118 LOCALE MAGAZINE

jungle struck Blank physically and emotionally. Without access to garden centers, she had trouble finding knowledgeable people to teach her how to care for her greens. Challenging personal experiences, shopping for plants and seeking a likeminded community planted the seed for The Sill, and a brilliant idea began to grow. Education is an integral element of her business: “Having a relationship with plants can truly be transformational. There’s something about learning a new skill that unlocks the essence of personal growth in someone. It’s a reminder of our capacity to learn new things at any age. Watching a plant grow creates a feedback loop, which I think is critical to why people find such satisfaction in plants.” The Sill hosted several in-store workshops that have gone virtual since the beginning of the pandemic. Each workshop now can host hundreds of people versus the 10-to 12-person capacity in the shop. The classes vary from Humidity 101 and Artificial Lighting to Winter Plant Care and more. Navigating this past year has been both challenging and rewarding for Blank and The

Sill. “Making sure the business stayed healthy and was growing is a huge accomplishment,” she says. Blank stays motivated by pushing boundaries and pushing herself. She’s most proud of being an inspiration to young women who have followed her journey and aspire to become entrepreneurs. “As I’ve gotten past challenges and hurdles of growing this business, I’m interested in how far I can go. Not for personal gain, but to break barriers and be a role model,” Blank states.

Back Time WAIT, YOU’RE HOW OLD? WRITTEN BY: BRITTANY LAWRENCE PHOTOGRAPHED BY: ERIK ISAKSON

Getting older is inevitable, but Forever Ageless, a center for regenerative and aesthetic medicine, is here to help you eliminate signs of aging so you look and feel your best. Located in beautiful Newport Beach, Forever Ageless offers an array of services from skin-tightening and microneedling to lasers and thread lifts. Founder of Forever Ageless and Board-Certified Physician Dr. Joe Cerni has hand-selected five treatments that can boost your confidence and give you that coveted youthful glow.

G

DR. JOE CERNI Founder of Forever Ageless and Board-Certified Physician

“Our Forever Young treatment uses a broadband light and is the first and only treatment designed to delay aging in all skin types…” —Dr. Joe Cerni

SKIN ON POINT • “Morpheus8 is radio-frequency needling, using needles with heat energy that penetrate the skin to start the healing process to create more collagen. This minimally invasive treatment helps tighten the skin and has little to no downtime.”

PERSONALIZED PROCESS

GLOW LIKE AN ANGEL • “Our Halo Laser treatment features a two-in-one laser. One laser is used for a superficial peel, while the second goes deeper into the skin, stimulating new collagen, targeting discoloration and wrinkles and repairing sun damage.”

At Forever Ageless, each treatment is performed with meticulous care and is customized to meet your unique needs. The result? A look that is exceptionally fresh and natural. After your treatment, shop an assortment of proven skincare products that work to diminish signs of aging.

TURN UP THE HEAT • “Profound is another type of microneedling that is slightly more aggressive and has around five to seven days of downtime. A needle will penetrate the skin

and heat the area to 67 degrees for three seconds, stimulating collagen and elastin production.” TURN BACK THE CLOCK • “Our Forever Young treatment uses a broadband light and is the first and only treatment designed to delay and reverse aging in all skin types. There is no downtime with this procedure and it’s great for ages 30-60.” Forever Young is a treatment to repeat every four to six weeks!” NEED A LIFT? • “A thread lift uses MINT absorbable sutures with bidirection cogs to lift sagging tissue. The thread will dissolve in about three to four months but leaves behind the patient’s own, new collagen. It’s great for brows, eyelids and lips, and the results last about a year.”

1

CHISELED CHEEKS • Ami’s dubbed cheek fillers “the liquid facelift” because they address not only the cheeks, but the eye area and nasolabial folds— aka smile lines. As Ami puts it, “Once I fix that, everything flows together.” 2

LUSCIOUS LIPS • “There’s a right filler for every individual,” Ami says. Volbella is ideal for those over 40 who want something more subtle, while millennials striving for plumpness and volume should opt for Juvederm Ultra or Ultra Plus.

3

JOVIAL JAWLINES • To reduce a prominent square jawline, Nurse Ami recommends Botox, which relaxes the muscles along the posterior jaw. “Once you relax those muscles, it creates that sought-after egg shape or V-shaped face,” Ami explains.

When it comes to matters of the face, you want to go to the experts: the professionals at the Physicians Center for Renewal. With 18 years of experience in cosmetic injection, the Physicians Center for Renewal’s Aesthetic Nurse Specialist “Nurse Ami Ami” has trained cosmetic surgeons and nurse practitioners across the nation. These are her five favorite treatments to help you look and feel your best in 2021.

Pucker Up • For patients seeking the heartshaped cupid’s bow look, ask Nurse Ami for her “flip and drop” treatment, which entails flipping the upper lip and dropping the lower lip.

122 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Two-in-One Special • According to Ami, Botox treatment on the jawline area not only creates a more feminine aesthetic, but it relieves teeth grinding at night. “If you have a TMJ disorder, it kills two birds with one stone,” she says.

4

CHINS ARE IN • Recently approved by the FDA, baseline chin filler treatments elongate and slightly project the chin, completing the ideal V-shaped look and feminine harmony with the rest of the face. As Ami says, “It’s sin not to have a chin.”

5

A BLISSFUL BRIDGE • Ami recommends those considering a nose job to try Voluma first, as modern-day fillers easily alleviate gaps, humps and bumps on the bridge of the nose, creating a smooth slope. “A little drop of filler on the nose creates an immediate and dramatic effect,” she adds.

“There’s a right filler for every individual.” —Nurse Ami

PASSION-DRIVEN PAINTER HEMALI VADALIA FINDS HER SENSE OF BELONGING ON A PATH ASTRAY FROM TRADITION

MORNING PAINT-MEUP

Vadalia’s painting snacks of choice are plantain chips. “Somehow, painting really makes me hungry, and I love munching during painting breaks!”

Expectation’s harsh grasp on our future often beckons us towards our non-existent crystal ball, inadvertently impacting our ability to fully focus on growth in the present. Taking advantage of the now while embracing the unknowns of the future is the mantra of India-raised artist Hemali Vadalia, whose creative journey required a huge leap of faith and the ultimate stray from tradition. Entering the workforce as a computer programmer, Vadalia’s feelings of unfulfillment prompted her to leave her job and open up to the possibility of the safer traditional route—marriage and a family. Shortly after, she realized her true passion lay in the world of storytelling, art and creation—a career which would go completely against her culture’s tradition. “Education is very important in Indian families; however, art is still not accepted as ‘real’ education,” she explains. Regardless, a passionate Vadalia received her master’s

degree in animation. While immersed with art, she became fascinated with painting. She then went on to study classical realism in Florence, Italy. After her formal art education, a multitalented Vadalia hoped to intertwine her love of animation and painting, but she wasn’t entirely sure where to start. As if it was meant to be, she stumbled upon an invitation for artists to work on what would become the first-ever feature-length animated painted film. After an intensive training and testing process, Vadalia was selected to work alongside a team of artists in Gdańsk, Poland, to paint and animate for the 2016 Oscarnominated film “Loving Vincent”. With each second of the film being comprised of 12 frames, Vadalia composed and animated seven whole shots, completing a grand total of 358 unique paintings for the nowbeloved film.

“I carry a small diary with me 24/7. All events that are too

powerful, I need to write them down.”

FINE-TUNED

“Sometimes I prefer silence when I am doing something for the first time and figuring things out, or I’ll even play movies just to listen to the dialogues in Hindi if I miss home. My music playlist is a mix of ’90s Bollywood, 2000s pop and hip-hop.”

Vadalia’s creative journey stands as a true testament to the rewarding nature of staying true to your passions, which can oftentimes require endless patience, faith and perseverance. “Sometimes it’s difficult to find motivation when you’re just looking at your progress from last week to this week. But when you look at it from two years before and now, you want to keep working at it,” she says. Peering into her crystal ball, Vadalia confidently shares that she’s in no rush to figure out her ultimate end goal. “I am still working towards it. I want to learn to articulate and organize thoughts and express myself. Life happens so quickly that we miss taking note of the little things, and it is often in those small things that happiness lies. I am trying to be more attentive to those moments and paint them.”

Spring A DAY ON THE GREEN AT SILVERROCK IS A DAY WELL SPENT

WRITTEN BY: LYNNE EODICE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: CHANNING BENJAMIN

SilverRock Resort is a challenging, 7,239yard Arnold Palmer Classic Course owned by the City of La Quinta. As you play this course, you’ll enjoy astonishing views of the Santa Rosa Mountains, large native bunkers and beautiful water features. SilverRock is open to the public—both to La Quinta residents as well as visitors of the Coachella Valley. In the past, Golf Magazine ranked SilverRock among the “Top 10 New Courses That You Can Play,” and it’s been honored with Zagat America’s Top Golf Courses Award. SilverRock has also played host to four Bob Hope Classic Tournaments from 2008-2011.

GRAB A BITE

• “The golf course was built by the city of La Quinta in 2004,” explains Randy Duncan, PGA general manager and director of golf at SilverRock. It was built as a course for the local residents to play at an affordable price, and at the same time was suitable to host a PGA tournament. “We’re now entering our 17th year,” says Duncan. “We have a wonderful golf course, and La Quinta residents pay about a third of what non-residents pay to play it.”

• The SilverRock Grill offers outdoor dining in a picturesque location and is open for breakfast and lunch. “We’re at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains, so you’re overlooking fairways, a large lake and wildlife,” says Duncan, adding that they have a great menu and a talented chef. “We order fresh produce and have the best beef,” he remarks. And this restaurant is equally popular with locals who don’t play golf. So whether you’re looking for a place to brunch with a view or you just finished a round of golf, The Grill is the ideal place for a bite.

LOCAL INSIGHT • Construction for two neighboring hotels, the Montage and Pendry, will begin in the spring. A conference center and new clubhouse are also being built to make SilverRock a destination golf resort.

LOCAL INSIGHT • Jhonattan Vegas was a young rookie from Venezuela who became an international icon for golf fans after winning the Bob Hope Classic at SilverRock Resort in 2011.

Planet B Your Guide to Going Green in the City of La Quinta

WRITTEN BY: TAYLOR HAYNES

[ Craving a desert escape but worried about your vacation’s impact on the environment? In the age of climate anxiety, you may want to keep your escape as eco-friendly as possible. One way to keep tabs on your excursion’s emissions is through your “carbon footprint,” which is the total number of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide or methane, our actions generate. According to The Nature Conservancy, the average carbon footprint for Americans is 16 tons— four times that of most other nations. Among the biggest emitters are gasoline cars, meat-heavy diets and air travel. Here’s how to escape to the desert while keeping your carbon footprint in mind.

Swap Out Disposable Plastic Bottles for a Trusty Reusable One

4

Why? Plastic is really bad. Enough said. [ Not only does it choke sea life and contribute to the horrifyingly massive Great Pacific Garbage Patch, plastic is a fossil fuel itself. Plus, manufacturing plastic takes a ton of energy, releasing carbon and other gases in the process. You know what’s hipper, more convenient and will last longer? A reusable bottle!

Don’t Forget to Pack Your Hiking Boots

Why? A low-cost, low-carbon way to experience the desert. [ La Quinta hugs the foothills of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains, making it a prime spot to hike and explore. Trails wind through the rugged desert

landscape, dip into dry riverbeds and climb in elevation to offer spectacular views of Greater Palm Springs. It can get toasty in La Quinta and the surrounding region, so make sure to bring your reusable water bottle and a hat.

5 Go Vegan for the Weekend Why? Animal products come with a big carbon footprint. [ Not only should you eat your greens, but it turns out that a plant-based diet is greener too. Try eliminating animal products during your weekend in La Quinta. Cork and Fork, a restaurant specializing in small plates, is a great place to start. Their vegan menu features a variety of tasty dishes like veggie-loaded tacos and pizza made with tofu cheese!

Why? Our future could depend on it. [ You can’t miss the expansive wind farm just outside of Greater Palm Springs. The San Gorgonio Pass wind farm is one of three of its kind in California and contains 2,100 snow-white turbines lining Interstate 10. Did you know that the biggest turbines can generate enough power to run more than 1,500 homes? For now, the turbines are mostly used to stabilize the power grid in times of high demand, such as during heat waves.

Wind Power Is Nothing New • Modern wind turbines are newer, but people have been harnessing the power of the wind for thousands of years. For instance, ancient Egyptians used wind-powered boats to travel along the Nile River. LOCALE MAGAZINE 147

Dr. Rene Dell’Acqua General and Cosmetic Dentist

AT DELL’ACQUA DENTAL STUDIO, YOU’LL BE PAMPERED FROM TOOTH TO TOE

WRITTEN BY: LESLIE GONZALEZ PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NATHAN COX

No one would ever call their dental visit a spa-worthy experience—unless they’re a patient of Dr. Rene Dell’Acqua from Dell’Acqua Dental Studio in Palm Desert. For Dr. Dell’Acqua, dentistry is more than a profession, it’s a passion—one she believes can change people’s lives one smile at a time. “I have a flair for helping people achieve their goals, which, for most people, is to have a beautiful smile,” she explains.

N

Dr. Dell’Acqua has been working in cosmetic dentistry for 25 years, and during that time, the good doctor has made it her business to make her patients feel comfortable and relaxed. That’s where the complete spa experience comes in, featuring treatments like aromatherapy and foot massages. It’s a service that builds trust among Dr. Dell’Acqua, her staff and her patients. “I think where we stand out has to do with how [patients] feel when they’re in our office; they feel comfortable. They don’t feel intimidated.” Dell’Acqua Dental Studio does everything from

general dentistry to porcelain veneers, which is a side of dentistry that Dr. Dell’Acqua says is akin to craft and artistry. “I’ve always been an artist,” says Dr. Dell’Acqua. “I feel like it’s relevant in dentistry because you’re using your hands. It’s very artistic, and to be really good at cosmetic dentistry, you really have to have some artistry in you.” Although she is revered for her artistry and spa-like quality service, she’s also known for the connection she makes with her patients. “Everyone feels like they’re known here,” she says. “We know who they are. They know that this is a special place where they feel like those good old-fashioned relationships exist.” Making a difference in people’s lives is her true aspiration and ambition. She believes a smile is what can make a difference—not just in appearance, but in their confidence as well. “I’ve had patients cry; they tell me how much this has changed their life or is going to impact their life… That’s my absolute favorite part of what I do.”

Runs in the Fam • Dr. Dell’Acqua grew up under the influence of her orthodontist father, whose work and influence inspired her to go into cosmetic dentistry. Fun and Games • When she isn’t changing lives with her famous “Dell’Acqua smile,” her passion outside of work is playing polo. Time Well Spent • Dr. Dell’Acqua spends plenty of her own time focused on the community, as she is involved with local charities and has served on the board of directors for numerous organizations.

He really represents the change that is happening that we desperately need. I love the diversity, the culture and the way San Diego is evolving and progressing,” says Ott.

Love for Sun Diego

On the Horizon

• Chef Keller sources ingredients from Specialty Produce and Hamilton Meats— two companies owned by families originally from Coronado. “Sean works with them too to get all of his fresh-squeezed juices,” says Ott. “Now, more than ever, it is important to keep these small businesses going.”

• “San Diego is very peaceful,” says Ott. “There is a lot of spirituality and sunshine. Just feeling the sun on my skin is heavenly, especially after living in Chicago for so long. It nourishes my soul.”

This story starts in the seventh grade. We know, most people want to forget their middle school days, but bear with us. The ending is well worth it.

• “The San Diego community is

• Originally, The Blank Table team planned on expanding to Orange County and even LA, but when the pandemic hit, their goals were put on pause. “Our plan is to start doing dinners in San Diego again and then move our way up the coast,” Ott explains.

“It’s a full sensory experience.” Alexandria Ott and Frederick Keller met at Coronado Middle School, where they sparked a friendship that would last more than 20 years. Fast forward and you’ll find Ott in Chicago running Chrome City—her own creative agency—and Keller working as a chef in restaurants around the world and on multi-million dollar yachts. Turns out, these two know how to hustle. Despite their success stories, a few years ago, Ott decided to leave her fast-paced life in Chicago behind, moving back to her old San Diego stomping grounds. When she got there, however, she felt a sense of disconnection. “I had been gone for seven years, and when I got back, I didn’t know how to connect with the city,” says Ott. But if there was anyone who could make things happen, it was her and Keller. So with a will to shake 152 LOCALE MAGAZINE

things up and give people the opportunity to connect, the duo decided to tap into an untouched territory in San Diego: experimental pop-up dinners. Enter The Blank Table—a bi-monthly dining platform designed to transform the San Diego cultural experience. “People are craving real connections more than ever, so we set out to provide a setting where people from all different walks of life can sit down, converse and share ideas face to face,” says Ott. But The Blank Table is far from any Monday-morning meeting. With the accomplished Chef Keller behind the menu, expert mixologist Sean O’Connell behind the bar and designer Katie Jayne Sprenkle setting a table that’ll take your breath away, each event elicits a magical mood. “It’s a full sensory experience,” she says. “It’s not just about the food; there is always music and a theme.” While Ott plays hostess, Chef Keller and mixologist O’Connell work behind the scenes, crafting cocktails, pairing flavors and perfecting the presentation.

and oysters topped with grilled pineapple chutney and moved onto decadent dishes featuring tuna carpaccio, seared scallops and yellowtail, finishing the evening with a serving of sweet buttermilk panna cotta. Since the first event in June 2019, The Blank Table has hosted at a variety of different venues across San Diego, including a former skatepark-turned-art studio, a private dock on Harbor Island and a family-owned nursery in Mission Hills. When the pandemic hit, however, the crafty team of four shifted their MO to fit the current climate, using their talents to curate private dinners for those who crave connection during a disconnected time. In other words, instead of hosting, The Blank Table comes to you!

“I love the element of surprise,” says Ott. So to keep things interesting, the team decided to not release the location of each event until the morning of. Oh yeah, and nobody knows who’s coming. That’s right—strangers dining with strangers at a secret location. Sounds odd right? Well, that’s the point. The Blank Table offers guests a chance to step out of their comfort zone and sit next to someone that is making San Diego tick.

“It’s about [the person hosting] now,” says Ott. I talk to the client, try to understand their vibe and do a lot of research on who the dinner is for.” For example, for our last client, I found out she had traveled the world, so we did different cocktails and flavors from the countries she had visited. I am really into researching the person and making it feel like everything is unique to them.” Clients can choose between four pricing options with the choice to add beverage pairings and floral and decor design. “It’s a great way to spoil people,” says Ott. “Fred’s food is dynamite, and the amount of work that Sean does to match the food with the flavors of the cocktails is magic. They go all out.”

The first dinner took place in Pacific Beach at a secluded garden space called Yard & Sea, and it was an immediate sellout. “We had guests enter through an alley. People were like, ‘Where am I?’ Then they walked into this beautiful, decked-out space,” explains Ott. The menu featured an amuse followed by three carefully curated courses and dessert. Guests started with champagne

With hopes to resume their pop-up events this year, Ott and her team continue to provide ways for people to connect. Whether it’s preparing an intimate celebration for a couple who had to cancel their wedding or orchestrating an incredible birthday dinner, The Blank Table remains a beacon of hope in a disconnected, everchanging society.

“Our goal is to give 7,500 boxes by the year’s end, but there is no reason why it can’t be 20,000 and we can’t get boxes sent all over the country.” —Harry Bagramian

The gift box, ornate and festive, and packed with toys for a girl her age, was from Project Giving Light, a nonprofit organization. Founded in 2017 by husband and wife Harry and Kim Bagramian, Project Giving Light delivers memorable birthday parties and gifts to homeless and unstably housed children across Orange County and beyond.

Kind Hearts • Not only does Project Giving Light host memorable birthday parties for homeless children, but they also organize drives for food, clothing, school supplies and backpacks.

Initially made up of the Bagramians and their two young children, Project Giving Light had small, humble beginnings. The idea was born after the couple spent time helping children deemed homeless by the county at Skyview Elementary. “I felt like these children were not being celebrated,” Harry Bagramian explains, noting the obvious difficulties of their life circumstances. “For some reason, it just hit us. We, too, had children who were young, and I said, ‘I think these kids need to be celebrated on their birthdays.’”

I

Over the last four years, Project Giving Light has celebrated over 1,500 kids on their birthdays. Their most formidable endeavor over the last eight months has been their new birthday box program, which permits volunteers to fill decorated, corrugated boxes with items for boys and girls of varying age ranges. Once filled, volunteers can send them directly to Project Giving Light, and their team will deliver to one of their many locations all across California. While the efforts of many non-profits have been at a standstill during the pandemic, Project Giving Light has defied all odds by expanding, providing desperately needed PPE (personal protective equipment) like N95 masks and sterilized gloves to Orange County hospitals as well as establishing a monthly grocery store gift card program to help over 100 local families. “We’ve been trying to be adaptable, agile and as helpful as we can to local families during these difficult times,” Bagramian explains. With the help of their biggest partner, the Orange County Foster Care Agency, Project Giving Light was successful in giving 200 birthday boxes to children in August of 2020 alone. “We’ve heard such great feedback from some of the social workers. It really gives you perspective on what these kids are dealing with on a daily, weekly or yearly basis,” Bagramian adds. To address the rife and pressing issues of poverty, Project Giving Light has extended their outreach to the city of Los Angeles. They’ve partnered with Union 160 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Following the same ethos, Project Giving Light aims to give these kids a consistent, loving experience on their birthday, and the only way to make that a reality is through the consistent donations and volunteer hours of others. “We want 2021 to be a year of explosive growth,” Bagramian explains. “Our goal is to give 7,500 boxes by the year’s end, but there is no reason why it can’t be 20,000 and we can’t get boxes sent all over the country.” According to Bagramian, donors and volunteers contribute not only to giving these underprivileged children hope and happiness today, but also to creating enduring memories for them in their future. “No matter our circumstances, all of us can look back on the good and the bad things that have happened to us, but when someone or something impacts you in a meaningful and significant way, that changes you and makes you feel loved. PURE BARRE OFFERS LOW-IMPACT, HIGH-INTENSITY WORKOUT CLASSES SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE

Orange County Pure Barre Owner Monica Grubin owns five studios in the area: Huntington Beach, Irvine, Mission Viejo, Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, which has been Grubin’s original studio for 12 years. “Before Pure Barre, I worked in Orthopedic Surgery and was attending Physician Assistant School,” says Grubin, “but once I found the Pure Barre Technique, I realized this workout was what the fitness space was lacking and could solve orthopedic problems before they needed surgical intervention.”

The studios offer three different classes, not levels. “I think that is my favorite aspect of Pure Barre; it is literally for anyone,” explains Grubin. Members of all different experiences will be in one class together. “We don’t have levels, as you can really go at your own pace,” she explains. “If you need to take a break, take a break. You focus on your own body and movements.”

The three classes offered are: Classic, a full body workout with a series of low-impact, high-intensity movements; Pure Empower, more cardio and interval training; and Pure Reform, resistance-based training, targeting major muscle groups. “I honestly don’t have a favorite class,” says Grubin. “It just depends on the day. Women tend to feel different every day according to our cycles. The three classes are a good mix of all workouts.” As for this past year, it’s no secret that fitness centers have had to change how business is run. “We’ve gone virtual, with virtual class offerings. We have new regulations in place— as many fitness centers do—like temperature checks, distancing and sanitation procedures,” explains Grubin, ”but we also have a CASPR air filter, so all air being pumped into the studio has been purified.” The studios are also able to control their exposure, as locations are only about 1,000 square feet. Plus, class sizes are small and must be registered for, so the studio is able to know who attended which class. “We are able to keep it safe,” assures Grubin.

• If you have children and want to invest for their college education, look into a 529 plan. This is specific to education. The funds grow tax-free, and when they are used to pay for education, the disbursement is taxfree as well. Invest in Yourself • Classes, training programs or other educational opportunities can be very valuable. You can improve upon, or add to, your set of skills. This can make you more productive, a more valuable asset in the workplace and can also help you feel better about yourself. Invest in the Markets • “Anyone can do this,” says Kuhn. “There are all sorts of platforms, such as Schwab, Fidelity, Betterment and Vanguard. Any of these allow you to invest in the equity markets or the bond markets, even if you only have a thousand dollars.”

Acing It This La Quinta Tennis Director Shows Us How He Lives His Life off the Courts

La Quinta NAME: Kevin Connolly JOB TITLE: Director of Tennis at La Quinta Resort & Club

3 FUN FACTS ABOUT LA QUINTA RESORT & CLUB:

RESIDENT OF: Palm Desert

1. The Tennis Club was the original location with a 7,500 seat venue for what is now known as the BNP Paribas Open. 2. The resort is spread across 45 acres of lush gardens. 3. We have 41 pools on property!

LOCAL LIVING: 29 years

DISTANCE YOURSELF

At La Quinta Resort, we’ve been social distancing since 1926! The property is massive, but at the same time, there’s the charm and feel of a bed and breakfast, making it a popular desert destination for locals and visitors.

“There is so much pride at La Quinta Resort, as everyone there soaks up the magic of our famed property. I still walk around in awe everyday…”

FOR THE HEALTH OF IT

Ò Luscious Lorraine’s has hip decor with great vegan food! It’s centrally located in Palm Desert, and their variety of options are limitless. I love to support Lorriane because of her passion and her unparalleled product. I’m usually grabbing a Beyond Burger; you can’t go wrong, however, with any of the choices. There’s also a healthy grocery store (Harvest Health) in the adjacent complex. www.lusciouslorraines.com

COZY UP

Ò When it comes to cocktails, I’m more of a mocktail fan, and I’ll consume anything with blueberry acai! My other favorite “beverages” of choice include green tea, cappuccinos with oat milk and Sambazon. I love to enjoy a drink by the fireplace at Sparrows Lodge on a chilly night. With its rustic, Tuscan vibes, this hidden spot in Palm Springs is relaxation at its finest. www.sparrowslodge.com

GO VEGAN OR GO HOME

Ò Chef Tayna’s Kitchen is a great spot for an al fresco meal; it has a city vibe with a limitless vegan menu! The variety, creativity and uniqueness of Tanya’s makes it a hidden gem. Pro tip: you’ll definitely need GPS to find it, and you’ll be hooked after the first visit. www.cheftanyaskitchen.com

WHEN IN DOUBT, HIKE IT OUT

Ò Painted Canyon Trail in Mecca, CA is one of my favorite hikes! Getting there is an adventure in itself, but once you’re there, the climb up the “ropes” is harrowing fun. It’s definitely a challenge, both mentally and physically, but you’re rewarded with the view from the top of the canyon. It’s a life-changing experience to pull this hike off. www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/ painted-canyon

Ò When you visit Pappy & Harriet’s in the middle of the high desert, you’ll think you’ve landed on another planet. Surrounded by Joshua trees and rugged landscape, this iconic music venue is like no other spot in our desert. For a small Western-themed venue, iconic musical acts perform here on a regular basis. I’ve seen Chvrches & Diiv in concert at Pappy’s! Call up Google Maps, dress warm and arrive early.

This Reimagined 1950s Icon Combines Surf Culture and CoastalChic Amenities for an Exceptional Escape Dreams really do come true at The Surfrider Hotel, Malibu. Perched just above the fabled Surfrider Beach, this intimate boutique hotel is made up of 20 rooms, a library, a guest-only rooftop bar and a farm-to-table restaurant. Earthy tones and reclaimed teak floors elicit an authentic beach house feel. Owners Matthew Goodwin, a California-born architect, and Australian wife Emma Goodwin marry design-forward elements and unparalleled hospitality—two things that give The Surfrider its splendor. “Make Yourself at Home” is the hotel’s motto, and after a night spent in one of their custom-designed beds, you might just make plans to move in. This, my friends, is barefoot luxury at its best.

All in the Details

Each board is handmade by local shapers and comes in vintage pastel shades taken from 1960s surf magazines. Post-surf sesh, rinse off in the heated outdoor shower and head up to the rooftop bar for a hand-crafted cocktail.

Farm to Table • With wellness at the forefront, The Surfrider menus feature dishes with organic and sustainable produce that is sourced directly from local farmers. The roof deck bar and restaurant are exclusively for hotel guests only, and the food is worth the room alone. Insider tip: order one of the Surfrider picnics and take it to the beach for lunch.

The Ultimate WFH Office Revamp

San Diego

La Casa Azul Design Brings Chic and Functional Style to Home Offices and Beyond WRITTEN BY: KERI BRIDGWATER • PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: REZA ALLAH-BAKHSHI

“I’m not a designer focused on status or spending money. Working with people, you’re involved in these intimate areas of their lives— from personal finances to their bedrooms—so being able to create this connection and develop relationships has really resonated.” —Juaneice Munoz

How to Create a Chic, Sophisticated Home Of fice Juaneice Munoz’s Tips for Designing a Functional Work-From-Home Space

Step 1

Write down your goals. • “The first thing we do on any project is to write down the main goals you want to achieve with the space. Like, how do you see yourself using the room in a few years? Will it still be an office? It pays to think ahead.”

Step 2

Create a budget. • “Decide how much you want to invest. This informs where you can go shop and what sort of pieces you will be able to include, such as custom builtins versus stackable storage. I personally love a high-low mix and am not above a good HomeGoods trip.”

Step 3

Expert : Juaneice Munoz Job Title: Founder and Principal Designer, La Casa Azul Design 186 LOCALE MAGAZINE

With remote work set to continue into the foreseeable future, it’s past time to graduate from the kitchen table and create a stylish at-home office with these easy-to-follow tips. Founder and Principal Designer of La Casa Azul Design Juaneice Munoz shares how to revamp your workspace and create a clean, functional and sophisticated place for your next Zoom call.

Rapid Fire With the Expert

Come up with a concept. • “This is where you’re thinking of your color scheme and the elements that you’ll need depending on how you want the space to look, feel and function. Perhaps you

want to make it more of a library space, or maybe you’ll put a daybed in there and go more bohemian.”

Step 4

Design schematics. • “The measuring tape is your friend here! Figure out where the built-ins might be going, what size desk you can fit—I want to stress this part because it’s where most mistakes are made. When you’re designing something, you get excited and start making purchases, but oftentimes, what you buy is too big or isn’t going to fit through the door.”

Step 5

Finishing touches. • “You don’t want it to feel like a commercial office, so this is where you can personalize things with art and accents. It’s also the best place to make edits. Either pull back or add things—maybe you need a plant in one corner or another chair to help balance things out.”

The Next Big Renovation Trend? “Neutral color palettes; black window frames.” The Trend to Lose? “Overly modern farmhouse.” Color of 2021? “Azul blue, of course.” Dream Project? “A boutique hotel.”

Piece of Advice for a New Homeowner

“Select staples and big pieces first, and don’t be afraid to splurge a little.”

Repeating THE GUILD HOTEL IN DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO BLENDS HISTORIC CHARM AND LUXE ACCOMMODATIONS WRITTEN BY: CARMEN VARNER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: THE GUILD HOTEL, SAN DIEGO

The Guild Hotel stands as a refurbished reminder of the history of downtown San Diego. At nearly 100 years old, the historic landmark shows off its personality with modern rooms that host a myriad of details, going beyond just a cozy bed. The Guild works with area artists, offers local craft beer and boasts a chic, urban space for San Diegans to enjoy.

Making History

Ú Built in 1924 and reborn in 2019, The Guild Hotel is the reimagined rising phoenix of San Diego’s iconic Armed Services YMCA building. The hotel aims to combine history with the modern era. There’s a mesh of old and new, exposed brick with stories to tell and rooms equipped with modern technology like smart TVs and Bluetooth audio. The entire hotel drips with character for a unique hospitality experience rooted in nostalgia and modernism.

Ú Natural light, leather

tufted headboards and curated art give The Guild’s guest rooms a local and luxurious flair—each created with a different type of traveler in mind. The top-notch Penthouse Room includes epic rooftop patio views of San Diego, Little Italy and San Diego Bay, while the Artisan Room has historic floor-to-ceiling arched windows with velvet drapes, rose gold lamps and custom desks. Each room is elevated by plush and thoughtful amenities like GarnierThiebaut bedding, Maison Margiela Paris bath amenities, a handheld steamer, an ionic hair dryer and more.

Ú The openness of The Guild Hotel’s Grace Garden makes it a serene focal point and urban outdoor event space. The Grace Garden Terrace is landscaped with succulents, olive trees and Carolina Laurel cherry trees, making it a serene spot for an outdoor wedding, meeting or al fresco dining. It’s a beautiful hideaway amongst the buzz of downtown. Spend the day relaxing under the trees and stay to witness the magical city skyline come sunset. 4

Inspired Architecture

Ú The historical terracotta and custom iron detailing of the Renaissance-style exterior remains as a memory of the building’s architects, Lincoln Rogers and Frank Stevenson. However, the revamped interior of the hotel breathes modern architectural life into the building. For example, the nearly 100-year-old YMCA basketball court was transformed into the elegant Grace Ballroom with tall ceilings, bright windows and white brick.

5

All in the Details

Ú The Guild stays true

to its past with historic details, such as original tilework, high ceilings, elegant archways and exposed brick walls. 6

Bells and Whistles

Ú The gym is open 24 hours a day and is equipped with Peloton bikes; guests can also access the rooftop pool at Broadway Athletic and Swim Club.

7

Pups Welcome

Ú Bring Fido! The hotel

has pet amenities like bowls, treats and a dog bed to welcome your furry friend. 8

Unmatched Hospitality

Ú Hotel designer

Sormeh Rienne preserved and framed one of the building’s initial blueprints, which was discovered in a wall during construction. It now hangs in the lobby! 9

Local Flair

Ú This boutique hotel

has plans to partner with local artists, artisans and museums in 2021 to create a rotating art gallery in the rooms. 10

Strike a Pose Ú Find inspiration

1

STEAM IS A MUST FOR CRUST • From Thermador to Gaggenau, Chef Kimberly swears by steam ovens for baking. “They’re so innovative and versatile,” she says. “Plus, if you want to get that great artisan crust on your bread, you actually need steam.” 2

OH, THE DINNERS YOU’LL SMOKE!

3

SOUP DU JOUR AND SO MUCH MORE • “An automatic blender like the Wolf Gourmet Blender not only makes great purees and smoothies, but safely blends hot soups ready to serve,” Chef Kimberly explains. “Just throw in steamed veggies with your choice of stock!”

• Smoke and grill meats with the Hybrid Grill. “Grills like the Kalamazoo not only allow you to grill food with gas, but infuse more flavors like charcoal, wood chips or wine with a smoke box,” Chef Kimberly says.

Do Your Research • Before investing in a luxury appliance, a one-on-one demo can be scheduled with Chef Kimberly in PIRCH’s indoor or outdoor lab. “I cook for you, discuss the product and compare it to others,” she says.

Known for their experiential retail and culinary howtos, PIRCH works with each client to refine both their kitchens and cooking skills in their five picturesque showrooms across Southern California. “Some clients bring their own dough to test out which oven bakes their bread best,” enthuses Kimberly Ayala, the executive chef at PIRCH who teaches people how to cook using PIRCH’s luxury appliances. Here are her five best cooking tips along with the appliances that make them easy as pie. “An automatic blender like the Wolf Gourmet Blender not only makes great purees and smoothies, but safely blends hot soups ready to serve.” —Chef Kimberly Ayala

Simplify the Process • Between their in-house chefs and sales advisors, PIRCH understands how imperative a kitchen’s design is. “Layout determines efficiency and convenience,” Chef Kimberly explains.

4

AUTONOMOUS OVENS • Electric ovens and wall ovens, such as the Miele, have wireless pro thermometers that make roasting chicken fool-proof. “Just set it to 165º, and you won’t have to check the temperature. You’ll be notified when it’s ready.”

“The home cook should always invest in tools that make cooking great food easier.” —Chef Kimberly Ayala

5

SPEEDY HEATING • For the on-thego home cook, Chef Kimberly recommends a speed oven, a convection oven and microwave that allows you to cut cooking time by nearly half. The speed oven by Dacor even has an air frying function; no more taking up extra counter space. “The home cook should always invest in tools that make cooking great food easier,” she adds.
