EDITOR'S NOTE I’ve always been one to stay up to date on trends. This is something I’m particularly proud of when strutting around in a new outfit, but usually end up regretting a few years later. The what-was-I-thinking moment happens quite often when looking back on photos from high school—even my early Instagram photos can be cringeworthy. But sometimes, not always, I nail it with a timeless piece that I wish I still owned. Past fashion trends play a big part in our lives and truly set the overall tone for a decade—the ‘70s with flowy, carefree outfits, or even all the way to the early 2000s with bare midriffs and low-rise jeans. Whatever decade you grew up in, you probably have a favorite trend attached to a fond memory—mine would definitely be my pleated Limited Too skirt with the hot pink, bedazzled top I wore to my first middle school dance. I warned you, cringe-worthy. For this year’s Shoppe Guide (p. 83), we decided to switch things up a bit and really focus on some of our favorite trends
from the 1970s to the early 2000s. This was no easy feat for a room of editors all born in the early ‘90s. Having only really experienced the fashion trends of one of these decades, we really had to roll up our sleeves and get researching—which felt a lot like shopping. All in a day’s work! We also made a few changes to our Shoppe Experts (p. 67), which features seven stylish men throughout Orange County speaking on their outfits and what fashion means to them. Love all things makeup? Flip to our Fashion Spread (p. 101) that highlights natural looks with brands like Glossier. If you’re planning your spring vacay but not quite sure what to pack, make your way to our Escape Expert piece (p. 180) where we sat down with Justine Cuenco of REVOLVE and got all her favorite packing tips for your next big trip. Now, I know you’re supposed to love all your children equally, but I must say—this Shoppe issue is definitely one of my personal favorites and I hope you find that it’s yours, too.

COVER

We started 2018 off with a bang with our January cover, Tia Mowry. A girl boss in her own right, Mowry is making moves in the industry. For our OC April magazine, we switched gears to highlight a local legend who’s changing the game in baseball—Mike Trout of the Angels.
W
We were ecstatic when we learned that we were going to feature this baseball superstar. Sports writer, Tonya M. Huffman, conducted an interview with Trout where she was able to get in depth with him about his life and sports career. After Huffman’s interview, there was only one thing left to do—get an incredible photo of Trout for our cover. We flew out our esteemed photographer, Michael Wesley, to Tempe, AZ to get the shot. "While watching Mike Trout in action the day before the shoot, it became obvious what all the buzz on this guy is about. He has a certain confidence that transcends into his swagger on the field, so I knew he’d be an exciting subject to photograph,” Wesley said. Whether you’re a baseball fanatic or you’re really just here for the Shoppe Guide, be sure to dog-ear the page—you won’t want to pass this feature up. —Chelsea Raineri, Editor

WRITTEN BY: JORDAN LIGONS
The Shoppes at Carlsbad is a fashion (and foodie) lover’s dream! If you haven’t stopped by in a few years, prepare to be 'shook' by the elaborate renovations that completely refresh the property. Rouse Properties has added more upgrades and revamps to the property since breaking ground in late 2016. Over 100 retailers are housed in The Shoppes and it seems like the gift that keeps on giving with more to come! Like the 24,000-squarefoot Forever 21 that’s set to open in late 2018 and numerous restaurants being added to their “tenant mix.” There’s plenty of activities to do here to add to your iCalendar. Watch the latest Rom-Com at Regal Cinemas, splurge on the semi-annual sale at the newly upgraded Victoria’s Secret, round up the kiddos for an adventure day at ocean-themed children's play area, or grab your best buds and hit up happy hour at hot spot Yard House—whatever it is, a weekend trip to The Shoppes at Carlsbad is a must.

Deluca Trattoria is a local haven that welcomes strangers with a glass of wine and an authentic, Italian dinner. The key here is history and heritage, and with a motherand-son team working together on everything from sourcing the best ingredients to serving the most exquisite wines, you can see, feel and taste the love that has gone into every aspect of the restaurant. Andrea Francesco and his mother Gabriella bring rustic, fresh Tuscan cuisine to the South Bay, infusing their Florentine origins into the surfer scene of the beach city, and locals can’t get enough. “Like a snowflake, all Italians have their own take on the classics, and we feel the need to share our old-world heritage.”

Lighter and better for my feet during the long work day.” “So, the hat I wore is from a beer brand named House Beer. They are a premium lager beer company founded and based out of Venice Beach. Our barbershop is graciously provided with cans to serve our of-age and partaking customers with icecold beer during their haircut appointments.”
“The jeans I'm wearing are from a local brand named 5.11 Tactical. They fit so well [and are] stretchy, comfortable and durable. Realistically, working in the barbershop requires comfortable clothes that you can wear for 10-12 hours a day while standing on your feet.”

They say fashion evolves in cycles; everything old is new again, and what goes around, comes back around. In 2018, many of the “best ofs” from the past decades are making an appearance once again, but with a fresh new spin that’s relevant and now. With the bright colors of the ‘70s, edginess of the ‘80s, everything plaid from the ‘90s and let us not forget the early 2000s with pops of bubblegum colors and bare midriffs à la Britney Spears. Today’s twist on decade couture will give you life this fashion season, and we’ve got the 411 on how to put these looks together.

Tucked away in the corner of a quiet shopping center in the heart of Costa Mesa, Salty Blonde Cut Co. is the hidden gem making a statement with its vast windows that clients gravitate to with ease. The entrance of the salon presents a hip, bohemian vibe that welcomes you in—and also gives you a bit of design envy, thanks to Jesi Haack Design. “I like that the salon is open and clean, but feels very welcoming and it doesn’t feel stark. I also love that all of my salon’s stylists are an amazing team and they work together very well, so you can feel that energy at the salon,” Brittany said. Ever since she was little, Brittany was obsessed with styling hair, so it didn’t take her long to decide to become a hairstylist. Having started her career by working in various hair salons for over a decade, Brittany finally made the decision to let her
Although the salon’s name may seem straightforward, there’s much more to it than meets the eye. “The word ‘salt’ has so many meanings to me. It comes from one of my favorite scriptures in the Bible, ‘Be the salt and the light,’ so to me, that is pouring into the community and showing good with your actions,” Brittany said. And showing good is exactly what Brittany has done. Salty Blonde Cut Co. is an eco-luxe salon where Brittany carefully hand picks sustainable hair products. “Two of our lines are vegan—one is very sustainable. They have their own farms in Italy where they farm for most of their ingredients, so I try to pick products that are green to the environment,” said Brittany. The salon also recycles hair, used foils and hair colors making Salty Blonde Cut Co. even more friendly to Mother Nature; “The hair gets used for third world countries to make pillows and mats, the products never get to the

“IF I CAN SERVE SOMEONE A FISH THAT’S JUST BEEN OUT OF THE WATER A FEW HOURS VERSUS A FEW DAYS, WHY WOULDN’T I?” — B L A K E M E L LG R E N
NATIVE KNOWLEDGE • Mellgren and his team just launched a short, monthly documentary series highlighting the behind the scenes people that make Craft House so special.
Blake Mellgren has created a neighborhood cornerstone with Craft House. More importantly, he has helped create an ever-evolving beacon for culinary growth in Dana Point, challenging customers to trust the food rather than the façade. Craft House is, as its name suggests, about crafting greatness. 118 LOCALE MAGAZINE
BEST BOSS AWARD • Mellgren closes his restaurant for about 10 days at the beginning of the year to give his staff a vacation and to let them recharge their batteries to get ready for the new year. BLAKE MELLGREN’S FAVE LAGUNA FOODIE SPOTS • Three Seventy Common • Driftwood Kitchen
Now the chef and proprietor of Craft House, Mellgren grew up in the restaurant industry, cooking in kitchens in LA and New York before returning home to Orange County. Outside of Laguna and Newport Beach, however, Mellgren found the rest of the region to be a “food desert.” Searching for a way to fix how neglected southern Orange County was, Mellgren opened Craft House in early 2016. With a team of chefs, most of which have backgrounds in Michelin-star kitchens, Mellgren is truly crafting an experience unlike anything in the area. The menu is New American in definition but defies conformity in the best way possible. As Mellgren puts it, “We do kind of fit that ‘New American’ bucket, but Craft House is an expression of everyone that makes up our team. It can be me or my two sous-chefs expressing ourselves through food, or the guys in the bar expressing themselves through drinks. We are what our influences are.” Mellgren beamed with pride as he discussed his respect not just for ingredients, but where they come from and serving them to the community in the most delicious way possible. “We work closely with Harbor Fish Company and you know those guys bust their butts to get us great fish...If I can serve someone a fish that’s just been out of the water a few hours versus a few days, why wouldn’t I?” Mellgren said.
Craft House offers the perfect representation of Mellgren—when you dine at Craft House, you instantly feel like family. “I think most people hear ‘Craft House’ and assume we just do craft beers but that’s not it at all,” he explained. “It’s about the craft of hospitality. It’s the craft of welcoming people in and taking care of them.” It’s no surprise that the chefs he looks up to are Sean Brock and Richard Blais. They, like Mellgren, excel in the art of taking care of their customers, rather than just cooking for them. Expressing a sense of home through food explains why his favorite item on the menu is the meatloaf with collard greens, inspired by his grandmother who’s from Tennessee. As he puts it, “Everyone in my family is a part of that dish.” Mellgren understands that he’s asking for trust from his diners, but those who’ve already tried Craft House are reaping the benefits of what is truly a wonderful restaurant. “At the end of the day, it’s about expressing ourselves through food. It’s not about making money, it’s about giving who we are through food and if you can’t put that vulnerability on a plate, then what’s the point?” he asks. Not only is Mellgren’s food great, but his honesty and passion are what sets Craft House apart. It’s not just a place where you want to eat—it’s a place you want to be a part of, and Mellgren is inviting you to do just that.

Crackin’? “TOP CHEF” RICHARD BLAIS’ TEAM ARE KILLING THE FRIED CHICKEN GAME WRITTEN BY: JORDAN LIGONS PHOTOGRAPHER BY: DAMIEN NOBLE ANDREWS STYLING BY: TERESITA MADRIGAL GROOMING BY: LISA LEEDY
Visiting The Crack Shack, one bares witness to the hype that this spot possesses. And trust us, the hype is legitimate. The restaurant seems to come alive with families kicking off the weekend by playing corn hole and co-workers clinking on their lunch break at the bar. Dogs are barking and the automated sound of cockadoodledooing adds to the background noise of what seems like the new 17th Street neighborhood spot.
V
This marks the third Southern California location of the beloved restaurant with a fourth on the way in Century City. “It has this amazing layout and vibe, as well as a really great cocktail and beer program, centered around local craft beers,” says Culinary Director Jon Sloan. “It has an outdoorsy feel with urban elements. It’s a smart and whimsical take on food and a way to look at chicken from a different lens.” Together with Founder and CEO Michael Rosen and “Top Chef” star Richard Blais, The Crack Shack team has hatched

a droolicious concept that’s spreading like wildfire. Why The Crack Shack works, Blais says, is because it sits in the happy-medium of whitetablecloth establishments and mom-and-pop shops. “There’s no pretense here,” Blais adds. “The food is as good as you can get; it’s fine-dining food, but it’s super casual. You can come in here in your boardshorts, t-shirt and sunglasses and have a good time.” He also doesn’t neglect to say that this restaurant is very much chef driven. Sloan hails from Blais’ Juniper & Ivy—the San Diego-based spot that serves fancier fare. He wants to assure you that you’re getting top-notch food. The famed fried chicken recipe is made with a labor of love: marinated in buttermilk, pickle juice and “crack spice,” a heaping unique blend of herbs and spices. Are you drooling yet? Stop by one of the hottest fried chicken joints in Costa Mesa when you want to get down on some grub that’s made with delicious intention. Bring a friend (or two) and a heaping appetite to the new kid on the block, The Crack Shack.
NATIVE KNOWLEDGE The Crack Shack opened its third location in Orange County late last year and has plans of opening a new location in Century City soon. NOT A FAN OF FRIED CHICKEN? There’s still plenty of yummy menu items for you to enjoy on their menu. The Sea Señorita is a delicious seared tuna option or indulge in their salads, slaw and deviled eggs. CHEERS! The Crack Shack also has an impressive cocktail list alongside a beer list that shines light on local craft breweries.

Located in Newport Beach, Olea serves up food inspired by California wine country to its bustling, lively dinner crowd. Opened in November 2017, Olea’s lovely design elements reflect the vision of its owner Russ Bendel and Partner/Executive Chef Jared Cook to create the type of restaurant that they’d want to dine in and visit. Built from the ground up, the team had an opportunity to design the restaurant to suit their needs from the large, open kitchen to the outdoor patio seating and the huge bar in the center of the restaurant.
L
—JARED COOK
Not to mention, Olea has charming decor elements from dark colored walls and furniture to the wooden logs in the ceiling, which represent Olea’s emphasis on cellar, craft and cook. Olea is Bendel’s third California wine-country cuisine concept after the awardwinning Vine Restaurant & Bar in San Clemente and Ironwood in Laguna Hills. The Olea menu holds similarities to its sister restaurants but it’s distinctive by adding a European twist to the winecountry food. The restaurant serves tasty items such as Signature Crispy Meyer Lemon & Honey Duck Wings, Jidori Chicken Schnitzel With Wild Mushrooms and the Duroc Pork Osso Bucco—a hearty, comfort meal. “Osso buco,” which means “bone with a hole” in Italian is a classic, popular Milanese dish made of veal shanks braised in vegetables, broth and winebased sauce. Instead of following conventionality, Cook used the traditional recipe as a starting point, but went with his instincts to make the Olea Osso Bucco his own. The foundation of his sauce is a tomato, slow-roasted with garlic and herbs, which creates a sweet, caramelized tomato flavor that contrasts nicely with sherry vinegar. Cook also substituted veal shanks for Duroc pork, which he describes as an “amazing product” with “unbelievable quality.” When he first started making the dish, he chose to use this breed of pork because of its high quality, fuller depth of flavor and it stood out from all the veal Osso Bucco.
mouth meat that carries the delicious herbs and vegetable flavors of the broth. When plating the dish, he adds texture with soft but not overcooked farro, instead of a creamy risotto or polenta. “I kind of took my own route with the organic farro and a mixture of vegetables to kind of make it not only unique, but a little more in the style of what we do, which is very vibrant, fresh and seasonal produce to go with it,” said Cook. “I just do what I feel with it and still try to respect the origin of the dish at the same time.” Since the opening of the restaurant, the Duroc Pork Osso Bucco has been a popular entrée with customers. As the seasons change, Cook may add another spin on the Osso Bucco as using fresh seasonal ingredients is important to Olea. “[The Osso Bucco] has stayed on the menu and as I do with a lot of things, I will seasonally change the setup,” Cook said. “Rather than change the protein, I will update it seasonally with whatever is fresh and at its peak.” The Osso Bucco is a great representation of Olea’s European flair on wine country and it’s a perfect dish to have with a drink. While the chef is partial to white wine, he also suggests that the Osso Bucco will pair well with red wine, cocktails and whiskey drinks. “I really think that there’s almost no wrong answer,” Cook said. With a multitude of flavors and endless drink combinations, be sure to make your reservation and enjoy this hearty meal tonight.

DIRTY PROGRAM MARTINI
A staple in Costa Mesa’s effervescent bar scene, Mesa serves up a refreshing roster enabling spirit lovers of all persuasions to experiment with inventive drinks. Bar Captain Ryan Crabtree’s spotlight on seasonal strawberries is a summertime must. He draws on the structural lift of Hendrick’s Gin, the fresh strawberry, finishing with a splash of hedonistic alchemy from elderflower in perfect proportion.
The Noble Experiment’s Dirty Program Martini brings on the brine for those in the mood for a mouth puckering trip. Think Reyka Vodka layered with savory Fino Sherry, stirred with a housemade blend of distinct brines and a hot pepper tincture. Certainly, one to spark conviviality and conversation, this take on the speakeasy classic takes dirty out of the olive jar and into the light.

In 2014, Chef Bill Bracken was sitting at Starbucks contemplating his next move when the ah-ha moment came. After enjoying a career creating gourmet meals for the “rich and famous” as an executive chef, it was time to start a new chapter and Bracken knew he wanted to make a real difference. “I was planning on opening a for-profit restaurant but I also wanted to honor my calling to feed people in need,” he said. Sitting at that Starbucks, Bracken saw a food truck drive by and the vision became clear.

BRACKEN’S KITCHEN has become, as Bracken says, “a modern-day chuck wagon” for the hungry in Orange County. “We feed the homeless but we also try to reach those that are on an economic cliff, struggling to buy food and still be able to take care of basic necessities. Instead of people wasting money on transportation to get to us, we can bring the food directly to those that need it most.” Partnering with churches and other non-profit agencies gives Bracken the ability to announce where and when “Betsy,” the bright-red food truck, will be in to feed those in need. “The truck keeps us connected to the community; we know who we are feeding.”
The term “Food Insecure” refers to the nearly 400,000 people who struggle with hunger, including 177,650 children, in Orange County each month. With 48 percent of children in Orange County receiving free and reduced lunch at school, it’s clear that the need for households to eat nutritious food on a daily basis is a desperate one. Bracken’s Kitchen has become beloved in the neighborhoods that it serves and the delicious, healthy meals provided are sometimes the only actual meals the people will have that week. “Most do not have a way to cook some of these foods and sometimes don’t even know what some of it is but we make amazing, delicious meals and they love it all.”
T
One issue that Bracken is passionate about is wasted food. With the staggering statistic that 40 percent of all food produced in the US is wasted, according to their website, the solution seems clear—find ways to recover that food and turn it into healthy meals for those that need it. “When people think of recovered food, they think of bread that didn’t sell at the local grocery store, but it goes way beyond that. There are

thousands of pounds of organic, restaurant-quality food that ends up in the trash for various reasons. It happens a thousand times a day, all over the country. One of our goals is to be the recovered food kitchen for all of Orange County,” he said. Bracken is also offering a culinary training program for those that would like to learn the skills necessary to find employment in the food industry. “We started doing it for young adults but we take anyone that wants to lift themselves up,” says Bracken. This program is valuable for Bracken’s Kitchen as the training provided helps the students learn how to prepare and serve the meals for the food truck, “They are providing meals for the very people and locations where they originally came from.” Given that the idea of a food truck feeding those in need is a rather unique one, there has been much support and help along the way. Bracken is quick to acknowledge those that helped him to make it all happen. “I have been blessed with so much support and wisdom from great people.” Betsy was actually a Christmas gift from Bruce Hecker of Bruce’s Gourmet Catering, the premier caterer for the

movie and event industries. Established nonprofits and vendors such as The Illumination Foundation, Working Wardrobes, Waste Not OC, LA&SF Specialty Produce Company, Newport Meat Company, Edinger Medical Group and Santa Monica Seafood have all played a hand in bringing up Bracken’s Kitchen. The success of Bracken’s Kitchen in the last three years has made growth necessary and Chef Bracken is currently looking for a new, larger facility and will be adding more volunteers to the 250 already involved. “The sweet spot would be five food trucks and a good balance between philanthropy and catering,” he added. According to Bracken, “The best part is being able to have this avenue to make a difference in the world. It’s funny—Betsy and I are the same, we used to feed the rich and famous and now we feed the hungry and homeless.”

I started my YouTube channel over a decade ago because I needed a place to upload projects for film school. YouTube was this hot new platform that all the kids were using so I jumped on the bandwagon. Growing up in Orange County with a ton of sisters, I’ve always loved makeup. I watched a lot of people with the same fascination, so eventually filming the makeup myself felt natural. I never intended to gain a huge following on YouTube—that’s why my username is so hard to remember. Here’s a few tips if you decide to give YouTube a try!

TIP #1
STARTING POINT
A lot of people put so much pressure on themselves to make the perfect video that they just never start; they’ll spend so much time planning and drawing moodboards that it's easy to get discouraged. I think the hardest part is just doing [it], so if you can get past filming, you’re already halfway there!
TIP #7
TIP #5
GOOD THINGS TAKE TIME
NERDING OUT
I’m a total nerd, so when I’m fascinated by anything I’ll dig deep and do my research. It’s so fun learning new things and I think the learning aspect of the everchanging world of YouTube is what kept me enthralled for so many years.
“I never intended to gain a huge following on YouTube— that’s why my username is so hard to remember.” —Christine Nguyen
TIP #2
SHOT ON IPHONE Some of my favorite YouTubers shoot their videos from their phones! So many people think they need to drop a load of dough on the newest DSLR when the truth is that it’s really just the quality of the content that counts.
With beauty tutorials I find that the more I do them, the easier they get! Keep a notepad with talking points if you feel you might get stuck. TIP #6
A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS
TIP #3
ONE STEP AT A TIME For me, it’s really tough to prep for a video, film the video and then edit it all in one sitting. My mental capacity just can’t handle that. Break everything up in a couple days or so.
TIP #4
LOOSEN UP
It's so cheesy but whenever I’m having fun and making a video, it really shines through. When I’m making a video just to have content out there, I can feel the tension and it’s just no fun to watch. 150 LOCALE MAGAZINE
TIP #8
Some of my favorite brands include Glossier, MAKE Beauty and Dr.Jart+; I love the no-makeup, makeup look.
KEEP IT FRESH
If something is trending and you try to make a video about that topic, it’ll just be too saturated and that can leave you feeling unmotivated.
TIP #9
TIP #10
Like so many things in life, you really just have to love what you’re doing in order to move forward and feel fulfilled.
People are infinitely fascinating; I learn so much just from sharing a meal with someone. Through those interactions, fresh ideas come and it’s easier to find motivation when someone else is holding you accountable.
DO IT FOR LOVE
JUST KEEP CHATTING
#SELFIE APPROVED With floor to ceiling windows overlooking the city, Astoria at Central Park West illuminates your residence with soft, natural lighting, perfect to snap a photo!
TIP #11
MENTAL PREP
I don’t know if it’s just me but if I’m in a funk, filming a video will take so long and editing ends up being brutal. Mentally prepare yourself a couple hours before so that you’re not too scatterbrained or drained.
TIP #12
CONSISTENCY IS KEY
It’s like when you used to watch your favorite cartoons at a certain time on a certain day because the program only plays during that slot. I’m not so consistent but my favorite YouTubers are very much so and I can always rely on them for fresh content. With that comes trust and then attachment. So when they disappear for a week or so, I start to miss them.
TIP #13
TAKE NOTE
Go to a museum, flip through art books, do anything to keep your mind stimulated. With that new knowledge, save ideas in a notebook. I find that handwriting with doodles works best for me but when I don’t have that notebook with me, I’ll just use the notes on my phone. I look back on my notes often when I’m stuck.

MIKE TROUT’S LAST NAME MAY BE THE SAME AS THAT OF A GILL-BEARING AQUATIC VERTEBRATE, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO BASEBALL, HE’S NO FISH OUT OF WATER. As Trout’s father was a former professional minor league slugger, naturally, it was in Trout’s genes to one day grace the baseball diamond. With Trout honing his skills at an early age, practice did indeed perfect and sculpt him to be the player he is today, and is steadily becoming. The major league world was ecstatic to catch this Trout when he entered the pros in 2009. But before he got caught by a Major League Baseball (MLB) team, during his days of youth, he fished around on smaller home plates to find his place in baseball and cultivate his craft.
156 LOCALE MAGAZINE
Following in his father's footsteps, as a child growing up in New Jersey, Trout first shagged fly balls with Millville Senior High School students and served as the baseball team's bat boy. Eventually, he began playing Little League Baseball where it was discovered that he was years ahead of his youth-league teammates in terms of skill and demeanor. This lead him to play an array of positions on the baseball field. If he wasn't burning fastballs over the plate, he was stationed at shortstop, and in honor of his favorite player, Derek Jeter, he wore jersey number two. Trout had a role model and in turn, is happy to be a role model to others. “Growing up, I wanted to be like Derek Jeter. Now, as kids look up to me in the way I play the game, the way I respect the game, it makes you feel good,” he said. “If you’re a kid, having somebody look up to you and knowing that you can come out of Millville—come out of South Jersey, New Jersey in general—puts good positive vibes in a kid’s head. You know, if I can do it, anybody could do it.”
F
Trout went on to play travel ball with Tri-State Arsenal, one of the premier programs in the Northeast at age 14. Under his father's tutelage, Trout developed sharp instincts and solid skills that he later displayed at Millville Senior High School as an athlete who's versatility shined as he played basketball, football and baseball. His blinding speed caught
everyone's eye. As a senior, Trout hit 18 home runs, a New Jersey high school record. Throughout his high school campaign, Trout earned two letters in basketball and three in baseball. Upon graduating in 2009, the school decided to reward Trout’s jersey number to the baseball's team captain, beginning in 2012. Trout was happy and humbled to have represented his school well enough as a student athlete that his jersey number would be of importance. “High school is home for me, and I was tremendously honored by the gesture. I had a blast during my time there, and I’m still close with a lot of my teammates and coaches,” said Trout. When it came to deciding his future after high school, both colleges and professional baseball scouts alike wanted to catch him as a recruit. Initially, prior to the 2009 MLB Draft, Trout took an offer from East Carolina University, committing to play baseball at the collegiate level. But Greg Morhardt, former Los Angeles Angels' East Coast scout who played in the minor leagues with Trout's father, had his eye on the young recruit. He was grateful when he was drafted by the Angels 25th overall in the draft. “It was pretty cool to be in a MLB Network studio and considered to be a top draft pick out of high school. I wasn’t really concerned where I went, I was just thrilled to be drafted by a big league club,” said Trout.

But first he had to make a pit stop. His minor league resume spans a total of four teams, and he showed out. He was the youngest recipient in the history of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award at age 19 and was named the Minor League Player of the Year back to back in 2010 and 2011, rightfully becoming the Angel’s top prospect. Then, the call you wait for your entire career happens, a call to play with the big boys. “When this happened, I called my parents. We had a special moment when I told them. I can’t explain the surreal feel. It really was a true realization of a boyhood dream to play in MLB,” said Trout. After the majors caught Trout, his talent became larger than life.
B
Throughout the 2012 season, he smashed home runs, stole bases in bunches and made highlightreel plays in the outfield. He robbed people of home runs with his agility and speed to make leaping catches. In fact, in May and June, he scored runs and reached bases more than anyone in the league. He also appeared in his first American League All-Star Game during his rookie season. He received the Jackie Robinson Award, the Heart and Hustle Award, took home the Silver Slugger
Award and won a Fielding Bible Award. “I have so much respect for this game and want to do things the right way,” said Trout. “Anything else that comes my way is just a bonus. I am honored to even be mentioned.” In spite of earning wonderful accolades, Trout focuses on the outcome of playing professional baseball and where it could potentially lead. “It’s great to get individual honors, but I play the game to win. Basically its playoffs or bust,” said Trout, envisioning his future.
“
“YOU KNOW, IF I CAN DO IT, ANYBODY COULD DO IT.” —MIKE TROUT
He has true qualities that engender his comparisons to MLB greats, but as a young slugger who is still growing and developing his game, he continues to rack up stats and accolades. He himself is a prospective legend, yet flattered to hold a candle to legendary players like major leaguer Bryce Harper or speedsters Rickey Henderson, Mickey Mantle and Kirby Puckett. “To be mentioned in the same breath as such legends is an amazing, humbling feeling. It is a tremendous honor,” he said. Being a legend in progress also lends itself to earning monikers. In reference to retired Angel Tim Salmon, Trout has been called “Prince Fish,” “God's Gift” and “King Fish 2.0.” And with attending Millville Senior High School, coupled with his swiftness, he later adopted the nickname Millville Meteor.
159
During the 2014-2017 MLB seasons, Trout continued playing up to par, earned more accolades and appeared in more All-Star Games. Some of these years even afforded him Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors. “I am flattered and humbled to be able to accomplish so much early in my career. I work hard at getting better, and I take pride in that. Accolades come if you work hard,” he said. Trout says he’s happy to play for the Los Angeles Angels, and as a professional, there are some goals he hopes to preserve and others he hopes to accomplish. “The Angels have been a great organization and everything has worked out. I always want to improve, keep learning, keep interacting with fans and playing the game the right way. This is the way I was brought up by my parents,” then he added, “Oh, did I mention win the World Series? We want to accomplish this goal above all.”

diamond, namely a “Most Valued Philanthropist.” By autographing memorabilia for charity events, making some child’s day by posing for a selfie, or agreeing to grace a sick or terminally ill patient with his presence, his philanthropy efforts are salient. Trout is an active participant in the Angels Baseball Foundation's monthly visits to the Children's Hospital of Orange County and is the new ambassador of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. In 2014 when Trout was a Players Choice Award winner, he divided his $20,000 grant between two foundations. One day he hopes to start a foundation of his own. “You have to give back. In addition, I have been able to give back to the high school I attended and was proud to do that for sure. Fans are what keep the game going. I love to be involved in the community whenever I can.” Maybe there’s something in the water, but people love Trout. With all his noteworthy accolades so early in his career matched with his passion for philanthropy, we know Trout will be in the league a long time and we can’t wait to watch; truthfully, we all want to be like Mike.

Ride THE NO DOUBT MEMBERS TEAMED UP WITH AFI LEAD SINGER TO CREATE A SUPERGROUP
WRITTEN BY: IAN HAYS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: STEVE ERLE
When it comes to the best acts rooted in Orange County, No Doubt is always at the top of every list. The band cemented its stature as a legend years ago. Blending the funk of ska, energy of punk and solid pop smarts to create a sound uniquely their own, the late ‘80s/early ‘90s was theirs for the taking.
The band knew from the start they wanted Davey in on the project. “He immediately said yes. So we sent him four instrumental tracks. Within a day or two, he had already sent back all the initial vocal ideas, homedemo style. It was so efficient and surprising, we were blown away. The ideas were so compelling. One of those first songs was the single ‘Kill For Candy.’”
As drummer Adrian Young puts it, “We were at an age where we were excited to just play. Looking forward to the next show was the biggest deal at that time. We played a lot of fun shows with a lot of really good bands on the bill.”
With the release of their self-titled debut in 2017, the band embarked on a tour, doing everything from standard shows to major festivals like Coachella. There were no real nerves about releasing the new music. For the band, the new wave influences were a natural progression. The surprise for fans was all part of the fun.
As the scene grew, No Doubt went international. But as the new millennium wore on, the band eventually went on break. It wasn’t long before the itch to play came back. Thus, the experiment known as Dreamcar began to unfold. This supergroup is comprised of No Doubt members Tony Kanal (bass), Tom Dumont (guitar) and Adrian Young (drums) and famed AFI lead singer, Davey Havok. With alternative rock roots, the members of Dreamcar honed a sound influenced by ‘80s new wave.
As Adrian explains, “With Dreamcar, we didn’t do this to go out and try and make a bunch of money. We did it as a passion project. And that’s still the case. It’s coming from the heart, and I just love it.” For 2018 and beyond? The band is looking to start playing some live shows again and recording new music. The fun for Dreamcar is just beginning.
Early Days • “We didn’t have management or a record deal at the time. It was just an experiment. But after about 20 songs demoed, we knew that this was going to be a band,” Adrian said. IN THE DRIVER'S S E AT This Female-Run Business is Changing the Way You Think About Auto Companies WRITTEN BY: IAN HAYS

For eight years, OC Autos has made a name for itself, proving that their 75 years of combined auto experience is the real deal. But, OC Autos is not just about being a trusted business or making a dollar; it’s about actively engaging with the community to improve lives. And none of this would be possible without Bushra Salman. A property manager by trade, she never had much interest in auto sales and servicing like her husband. But a move to Houston, TX changed that.

OC Autos is not just about being a trusted business or making a dollar; it’s about actively engaging with the community to improve lives. Lunch is Served • If you drive along Harbor Boulevard on any given Saturday, chances are you’ve seen, smelled, or heard the barbecues that tend to pop up around lunch time outside the OC Autos office. Relief on Wheels • With ROW, individuals or families in need can share their story about how a car would be able to benefit them and then the OC Autos team vote for the candidates. Native Knowledge • OC Autos mechanics host free weekend classes on a variety of topics relating to basic auto upkeep and knowledge for when you take the car in for servicing.
“In 2003, we moved to Houston and that’s where we fell in love with diesel trucks. Everybody has one out there. People use them not just for work, but exciting things like camping and fishing. It made me realize it really brings families together,” she said.
“I wanted to take things one step further and make some real social change in the local community. I had a lot of guys come and give me ‘pointers’ for this industry or new salespersons trying to push how others did things. I made it a point not to be like other dealers; stuck with it since day one. In the beginning, it was very difficult to be taken seriously. I realized this was going to be different and more challenging than anything I’d ever done,” she explained.
“
In 2010, Bushra and her husband moved back to California. She wanted to bring this new-found love to the Golden Coast. Bushra lead with a steady hand. With the assistance of her majority female management staff, they studied the car sales trade and diesel trucks. But while there was not much competition business wise, being female-run and doing things differently ruffled some feathers. 166 LOCALE MAGAZINE
“I wanted to take things one step further and make some real social change in the local community.” — B U S HR A S A LM A N
Bushra and her team dealt with sharks, doubters and misogyny. But as word spread of their expertise in diesel trucks, so did the appreciation for the fresh direction their business was taking. It’s not about getting the biggest profit margin. Bushra and her team understand people will save for decades to buy one of these trucks. She has stated she doesn’t need nor want to make an exorbitant profit off a sale. Mechanics and salespeople know from day one that upselling is forbidden. For servicing and sales, they print out breakdowns of all charges, happily explaining the profit margin. They have become the second and final opinion shop. Transparency is the key component of OC Autos’ culture. The work of Bushra and her team looks beyond what it means to be a diesel-truck dealership.
They were the first in California for chemical testing the diesel trucks and verifying theirs are ‘Titan Certified.’ It’s like a key blood test for the vehicle, the ultimate background check. The trend of doing these tests at other California dealers came about because of OC Autos. Trends are outliers until they show they work. And while their competitors are happy to capitalize on this success, OC Autos is already two curves ahead in the road. For OC Autos, everything is truly run like a family. For out-of-towners coming to pick up their diesel truck, OC Autos will show them around town, take them to lunch—a genuine welcome. They go beyond the numbers and earnestly engage the human element of their business. It’s allowed them to not just grow as a dealership and shop, but positively impact those around them. As for the future, Bushra has some big plans. “We are looking to heavily invest in a new, user-friendly app,” she adds. “We also are looking into custom trucks. The diesel truck community likes to make their truck ‘their truck.’ And beyond that, going global. I am looking to prove the stereotype wrong. The purpose has to be beyond just sales. It’s revolutionary. We’re very proud of being unique.”

Reality Check
OCULUS VR IS UPGRADING HOW YOU EXPERIENCE YOUR FAVORITE GAMES AND MOVIES
WRITTEN BY: IAN HAYS
T
The future is VR. The future is now, and the future kicked off in Irvine. Oculus VR is the virtual reality company making waves and always being one step ahead when it comes to VR technology. By the time Mark Zuckerberg acquired Oculus VR, the company was already on an upward trend—and this just ignited the explosion.
Ç Oculus Go
Currently, Oculus can boast that its Rift + Touch combo is the “most technically advanced consumer VR device on the market.” Not sure if you can find something you’ll love on VR? There are over 2,000 apps available on their platform with more than 100 million app downloads to date. There are over 300 Touch titles alone and the numbers keep growing. In fact, the number of developers building apps on the Oculus platform has doubled since this time last year. People can’t get enough of the VR experience. So what makes Oculus so special? With Rift, Oculus tackled one of the toughest hurdles for a true VR experience—a sense of presence. The Rift technology is all about fully immersing yourself in the game, movie, app, etc. The key is the “low-latency constellation tracking system.” Essentially, it is a type of positioning system that uses infrared IR LEDs in the headset to communicate with a base. This allows for the incredible visual clarity, making the experience feel more real and decrease the chance of motion sickness. The Touch—or the handheld controllers—technology is no different. The design is contoured to be intuitive and fit with your hands’ natural movement—placing you even further into the VR world you are exploring.
Changing Things Up Æ Through the VR for Good Creators Lab, Oculus launched an initiative “leveraging VR and 360 degree film to drive meaningful social change,” partnering with non-profit filmmakers.
For Oculus, this is just the start. With the pace of technology and a consistent demand from consumers, VR is here to stay and will only become more and more integrated, giving people brand new worlds to discover.
Challenge Accepted Æ With the High School 360 Challenge, schools and students use 360 degree video technology to highlight their communities and inspire change where it is needed most.

MICK FANNING, ALSO KNOWN AS “WHITE LIGHTNING,” DIDN’T BEGIN HIS SURFING CAREER THE WAY YOU MIGHT THINK. YOU MAY IMAGINE AN EAGER LITTLE GROM CHARGING THE SHORE WITH HIS BOARD IN HAND, READY TO SHRED THE BEST HE CAN. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE FOR FANNING. “BEING THE YOUNGEST, [MY BROTHERS] HAD TO LOOK AFTER ME. THEY ALL WANTED TO GO TO THE BEACH SO I GOT DRAGGED ALONG AND DRAGGED OUT THE BACK ON A SURFBOARD,” HE REMEMBERS. WELL, THANKS TO THE BIG BROS, FANNING WOULD LATER COME TO SECURE THREE WINS AT THE ASP WORLD TOUR.

GONE TOO SOON Æ If Fanning could surf with anyone, it would be the late Andy Irons. “Surfing with him was amazing. He would push you so much but also made it so fun, talking rubbish the whole time.”
Before he was surfing professionally, Fanning was a burgeoning soccer star. He continued to surf at the same time, picking up a sponsor with Quiksilver. “I was heavily into soccer at the time. I got approached by Quiksilver and started getting free product. As history shows, soccer was no longer a priority but it was seriously like I met Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny together,” he jokes.

Surfing would eventually take the mainstage in Fanning’s life when he was 13. “I got sponsored by Quiksilver and that was it. I thought I was going to be a pro surfer. Nothing else mattered really.” During the superstar surfer’s first year on tour, Fanning, 22 at the time, took fifth place in the world, earning him the ASP—Association of Surfing Professionals—Rookie of the Year. From then on, the trophies continued to roll in. In 2003, Fanning took fourth place in the world. It was widely predicted that he would snag the world title the following year. However, life had other arrangements, as Fanning tore his hamstring off the bone in a free surfing accident. He was forced to get surgery, preventing him from entering competitions for six months.

When faced with being broken both physically and emotionally, he gave himself a pep-talk. “You have two options, you either tuck your tail in or you rebuild yourself and turn into a champion,” he thought. Upon returning to the world of competitive surfing, Fanning secured a gripping win at Snapper Rocks and placed third by the end of the Championship Tour. LOCALE MAGAZINE 173
When it’s time for competition, Fanning makes sure to get into the right headspace. “For me, I always try to be calm, confident and focused on my job. I try to quiet the mind and surf from my center,” he explained. And it works, because when you watch Fanning surf it’s like a beautiful dance. He makes it look so simple and graceful as he twists and turns while flowing along massive waves. “A lot of it is just getting the body switched on. Just before I paddle out I like to visualize as well,” Fanning said.

For surfers, it’s about connecting with the energy of the sea as well as getting in touch with mother nature and learning what to expect. “Some people have a sixth sense when it comes to reading and feeling the ocean. You can definitely feel the change in energy in swells and density in the water. I guess the easiest way to explain it is like a quarterback reading a game of football and feeling the to and fro of who is winning. We are doing it with nature, but you never beat her,” he laughed. In 2007, Fanning claimed his first ASP World Tour title of his career, beating out rival pro surfer and reigning champion Kelly Slater. During the year, Fanning kept to himself focusing on the tours and competition. At the time surfing was a free sport. There were typically no routines or pressures to train. But since then, it’s changed. “It’s so much more professional these days. When I first got on tour it was all ‘happy go lucky’ where now it’s a full time job.” Fanning adapted to the evolving environment of the sport, which made for no surprise when he won a second ASP World Tour title in 2009, once again beating Slater. Fanning loves watching others succeed, too. One of his favorite moments was watching one of his best friends, Joel Parkinson, win a world title in 2012. “For me, I was just so proud of him, I watched him achieve a life long goal.” The camaraderie is real, and so in line with Fanning’s character. Following his best friend’s win, Fanning secured himself a third 2013 ASP World Tour title. He continued to win in other competitions the following year, including the 2014 J-Bay— Jeffreys Bay—Open title. During his return to the J-Bay in 2015, things took a turn for the worse. Just minutes into the final, a fin was spotted right next to Fanning as he sat waiting to catch a wave in the water. What followed made headlines around the world. Splashing occurs, then suddenly he disappears. The moment was seen by thousands on live television and all over the web, with real life reactions by the commentators capturing the shock and fear of the attack across the beach. For nine seconds, he disappears from view. A shark took some interest and got caught in Fanning’s leash. He did what most would forget to do in fear. He put the board in between himself and the shark, fending it off with multiple punches. Thankfully, Fanning got away unscathed; he was shaken up, but in one piece. However, the attack didn’t keep him down for too long. Shortly after the incident, he was back in the water. “I got itchy feet sitting on the couch after 10 days of not

surfing. Sure it was scary but I took it as a once in a lifetime thing. After 36 years that’s the only close encounter I’ve had and hopefully the last.” Spoiler alert: it wasn’t. While Fanning was surfing J-Bay in July of 2017 during a competition, there was another shark sighting. Although no attacks happened, he and another surfer were pulled from the water well in advance. The irony lied in the fact that this particular incident happened almost exactly two years after the 2015 encounter. In 2016, Fanning decided to take some time off from the sport, choosing to compete in select competitions. After the attack in 2015, the loss of his brother in the latter part of the year and 14 straight years of touring called for some reflection. In this period, he learned a great deal. “I learnt to be a passenger in life. All my life I have tried to control everything and in that year, I finally let someone else drive. It was a great feeling and I learned a lot [through] observing others and myself.” In 2017, Fanning returned to competing, including the 2017 World Championship Tour. Jeffreys Bay, South Africa

At this point, it’s more than competition that brings him to the water. It's a place for him to clear his head. “The ocean is so powerful in the fact that it has so much healing powers for so many things. Surfing will always be apart of my lifestyle for this reason,” he said. As for the future, Fanning is looking forward to a book that he and photographer Corey Wilson have been working on. When it comes to spreading the good word about his passion, he gives this advice to anyone looking to learn how to surf: “Take your time, don’t rush and have fun.” Surfboard or not, that is a piece of advice we can all adhere to in all walks of life. If you fancy travel, then you most likely enjoy being immersed in foreign cultures. Imagine a dwelling that displays beautiful art, peculiar architecture and has a host of stories tied to its history. Add in comforts fit for a king and a surrounding area rich with delicious food and activities, and you got the Taj Mahal... in San Diego. “Taj Mahal” is a fitting nickname for the five-bedroom house. Its real name, Casa de las Joyas, or House of Jewels, was named by its architect, Herbert Palmer. An aristocrat with roots to the British Crown, Palmer arrived in Maryland to work as an engineer, eventually changing paths to architecture and moving to California. He borrowed from both Spanish Colonial and Mughal-style architecture to create the unique home. Located outside of the Taj Mahal is a stunning, tiled lap pool with a beautiful view. Dwellers can watch the sun dip below
the horizon on the deck, at the firepit or even within the towering domes. The interior is decorated with scripture and philosophical words to live by such as, “The eye that sees delightful imagery illumes the mind to deeper mystery.” This couldn’t be truer when applied to Taj Mahal owner Bibi Kasrai, who keeps the 1927 home in excellent condition. “The house was in ruins when I got it with enough fungus to feed a lab,” Kasrai said. Years later, Kasrai has restored her “work of love” back to its original form. In 2014, she registered on Airbnb, opening up the Taj Mahal to explorers of the world. An avid wanderer herself, Kasrai connects with people of many cultures by speaking eight languages and through her wonderful cooking. Although it is no longer listed on Airbnb, it is still worth driving by to experience its glory. The House of Jewels is truly an adventurer’s dream.

“The best week of my entire life.” That’s what she said on the day we left Mexico after a whirlwind week of wedding activities and nuptials, and it was exactly what I needed to hear. When we were engaged two years earlier, we struggled to pick an exact date because both of us liked the idea of being engaged. We also had the hardest time imagining what the perfect wedding would look like or even where it would be. As with most newly engaged couples, we scoured Instagram feeds, wedding websites and asked for advice from friends, pouring hours into finding the perfect place to say “I do.” After what seemed like thousands of hours searching, nothing felt like “us” and we nearly gave up. Once we stopped looking, we discovered there was another way. Sometimes you are inspired and sometimes inspiration finds you. Mexico feels like a second home to me and Erin. We love taking last minute road trips to Rosarito, feeling the pressure instantly leave our bodies as we cross the border. We head to Tulum regularly to experience a laid back, coconut-watered-down version of Los Angeles and have flown south to Cabo and Todos Santos for everything from restorative couple weekends to full-blown, outrageous birthday celebrations. It was on one of these trips to Todos Santos, sipping on tequila and not thinking about our wedding, that it hit us—Mexico. We almost said simultaneously, “We need to get married in Mexico.”

Where we got married in Mexico was just as important to us as getting married in Mexico, so the search began again. Tulum was too far and Rosarito too close. Todos Santos was just the right distance and oh-so romantic, but lacked the hotel space we thought we needed. With 100 guests as our target, we wanted to find a place that was easy and inexpensive to fly to and could accommodate everyone at one resort. It was also our goal to find a location that felt like Mexico, not the modern, gentrified and reimagined version, but truly authentic—think Saltillo tiles and bright colors. Lastly, we wanted it to be oceanfront with an amazing pool. The Sheraton Grand Los Cabos, Hacienda Del Mar ticked all of our boxes. It was 196 LOCALE MAGAZINE
close to the airport and close enough to the city for our friends to make nightly excursions. Its oceanfront pool was large enough that we often came downstairs to find 40 or 50 of our friends swimming or riding the shore-breaking waves. Plus, the property was large enough that you weren’t bumping into someone around every corner. We flew from Orange County to Cabo San Lucas about one year in advance to view the property in person and they catered to our every need. They helped us arrange the flowers, DJ, rooms, transportation, cakes and food. They even arranged a wedding coordinator to answer all of the questions we didn’t remember or know to ask. We left after that weekend confident that we wouldn’t have anything to worry about.

Erin made the trek from Orange County to Los Angeles where she had arranged four appointments in one day at various bridal showrooms. Her sister, Amber, and two of her bridesmaids, Karina and Jacquelyn, joined her. Her last appointment of the day was at Grace Loves Lace, an Australian company with a bohemian boutique in Venice. They served the girls endless Champagne and berries. Erin tried on dress after dress but it was starting to look like she wouldn’t find the right one that day—then she spotted it. It was hanging in a corner, something she wasn’t sure she would like at first, covered in French lace with a long train. As soon as she slipped it on, she immediately knew. All the girls loved it as well and could tell Erin did too. She began beaming as soon as she put it on. GRACE LOVES LACE 1510 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA 90291 424.238.8190 | www.graceloveslace.com

Q: How do you communicate with the bridal party? How do you make sure they will love the flowers if they only see them by email? RL & PL: We love to have phone calls and get in touch with the bride and groom so we can chat and make sure we understand their vision. Most of the brides will already [have] a file with pictures they downloaded from the internet or a Pinterest board, so we ask to see it and based on the pictures they share with us, we send the flower proposal with our own work similar to the vision they have. MAKING THE MEMORIES
Q: What is the most important part of the wedding to capture? Beatriz Hernández: For me, the essence of the couple is everything. I like to show their personalities as well as how they are as a couple. For example, in Erin and Erik’s video you can sense how much love they have and it just makes the video flow.

W E D D I N G P H OTO G R A P H E R Q: What is so special about wedding pictures from Mexico for a destination wedding? Fabi Rosas: More specifically, Cabo is an amazing place for a wedding: the natural landscape that surround us combined with the nice weather we usually have and the magnificent sunsets creates the perfect setting for a wedding photoshoot. Q: What is every couples favorite photo that you take? FR: Without a doubt, brides love to see the reaction of the groom looking at them for the first time, walking down the aisle, all dressed in white. The grooms 200 LOCALE MAGAZINE
prefer photographs that capture funny moments like the garter toss. Q: Do you have a special story from Erik and Erin's wedding to share? FR: When I got to the room where Erin was getting ready, I found her with thousands of emotions and feelings going on in her head. She was really nervous, excited and happy. She seemed to be crying a little but she really did not want to—she was worried about messing up the makeup. These kind of intimate moments are the ones I am very thankful to be part of. At the end, when she saw Erik for the first time, a beautiful smile appeared [on] her face.

We didn't direct them much because they just blend together so well; that makes the shots beautiful. The first dance was very emotional with Makena singing and fireworks were amazing! Q: How many cameras do you use to capture the event? BH: We have two videographers, three cameras and one drone pilot.

There were so many memorable events at our wedding. There were fireworks and fully clothed pool parties, s’mores on the beach and wave womping. I can say that out of all the weddings I have attended the one thing people don’t mention after is the food. After our wedding, and even talking to our guests upon returning home, it was all they talked about. They loved our

ice cream cart, custom Mexican beer bar and taco stations. They loved the wheelbarrow of Mexican candy and open-fire grilled meat. Chef Cristian offered a five-course, gourmet sit-down dinner when we met with him, but that wasn’t our style. What he created for us was a casual, foodie environment that felt curated from our tastes and got gold stars from all of our guests.

Energized from the exchange of vows on the beach at sunset, guests were escorted to the pool deck outside the reception area for tray-passed appetizers, a beersof-Mexico bar and a custom-crafted margarita. They enjoyed their drinks and bites while being serenaded by a traditional mariachi band dressed in white to match the bride and groom. After the cocktail hour was finished, the party was ready to start. Guests made the short walk to the reception area, which had panoramic ocean views and 204 LOCALE MAGAZINE
was decorated with cafe lights, flowers and rustic wood furnishings. The bridal party was welcomed by guests with the DJ playing “Now That We Found Love” by Heavy D and The Boyz, and the new Mr. and Mrs. Hale were introduced as we strolled into a round of applause with “Hold On, We’re Going Home” by Drake. We moved to our sweetheart table against the ocean and the party began in full. Then we had our first dance to the song “Latch” by Disclosure and Sam Smith that was sung beautifully by our daughter Makena.

Erin is a firework junkie. We often position ourselves on the Fourth of July in a spot that allows us to watch as many shows as possible at the same time, tapping each other the entire time saying, “Oh, look at that!” There is little in this world that makes her as happy as the explosion of a firework. Edson from Cabo Fireworks Company gave me the controller to start the show. I’ll always remember the look on my new bride’s face when I handed over the controller. This will always be one of my favorite memories. She pushed the button and seconds later we had fireworks exploding over our heads for three full minutes, although it felt much longer. 206 LOCALE MAGAZINE

MADE IN
America IT’S A BIRD, IT’S A PLANE, NO; IT’S ARIA FXE WRITTEN BY: RAPHAEL MADRID If you’ve ever been inside a concept car from a major manufacturer, there’s a chance that the Aria Group is responsible for the body of that devilish beauty. They’re the phantom company that works with brands to bring unique, eye-catching concepts to life. Sure they’ve worked with Porsche, Ford and Tesla, but they’ve also partnered with Disney’s Cars and Paramount Pictures’ Transformers films—this 23-year-old design company is not your average kid on the tech block. Like anyone trying to make their mark on the world, the Aria Group isn’t looking to limit themselves to what they’re known for. The design, engineering and manufacturing group based out of Irvine has emerged from the shadows from its work behind the curtains to come center stage by manufacturing their first completely American hybrid supercar.
I
The Aria FXE is the speed-demon hypercar of your dreams, with a 1,150 horsepower, supercharged V8 engine, supported by two axial flux induction electric motors—this beautifully sculpted bolt of lightning on wheels can take you from zero to 60 by the time you count to three. Aria’s hypercar is fast, that’s without question, but it’s speed isn’t the only reason it’s turning heads. The FXE wants to compete in the same coliseum as the supercars of European origin. “When you think about cars of this caliber, what brands usually come to mind? Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani—all European, right? We want to change that,” Design Director Nicholas David said.
IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT There will be two versions of the hypercar going into production: an all-wheel and twowheel drive version. I CAN SEE YOUR HALO Aria Group has also produced a model of the Warthog vehicle from the Halo video game series.
In a world where the rarest and most soughtafter supercars herald from across the pond, the Aria FXE faces an arduous uphill battle. To be willing to clash against the Goliaths of the automotive industry is part of what makes this vehicle that much more worthy of our attention. Limited to 400 units going into production, this American-born roadster will not be easily attainable. “This is the challenge we face, but you don’t climb Everest just to stay at the base camp. You climb it to get to the top. We’re a small, humble company, but we don’t want to come as far as we have to just stop now. We respect what our European friends are doing, but we want to climb to the top,” President and CEO Clive Hawkins said. From start to finish, every piece and detail of the Aria FXE is built in-house with the desire to prove the superiority of American engineering.

Seaside Sanctuary KICK IT IN CAMEO IN A HOME YOU’LL NEVER WANT TO LEAVE
WRITTEN BY: SI SI PENALOZA PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: BRIAN LIBERTO
In the blue chip enclave of Corona Del Mar’s Cameo Shores, style and solidarity endures over flash and frivolity. Friends converge around common interests— surfing, sailing, yoga, wine—gathering around a terrace fire pit after a Sunday hike. Consider this a masterclass in how to commune on the Pacific; the art of making summer evenings as spine tingling and worthwhile as possible. For the first time in a decade, a prized spot in this coveted community has become available. This newly constructed estate on Milford Drive is alluring enough to reel in even the most jaded real estate aficionados.

GET ELEVATED This home comes with an elevator for guests; this may come in handy for those stiff mornings when yesterday’s leg day goals turn on you.
KEEPING UP WITH THE GROSSES If one puts a premium on posh neighbors, billionaire businessman Bill Gross of the Segerstrom family has a home here in Cameo Shores. Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf also purchased here in 2015.
This home on the celebrated platinum coast comes with year-round access to your own private beach, ideal for impromptu sunset soirees and 13,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor living. In a view-driven market like Newport Beach, it doesn’t get more premium than this—a panoramic perspective of the sandy beach, white cap surf and Catalina Island in the distance. The value proposition of this estate comes down to the number 15. It’s both golden mean and common denominator: 15 rooms, 1,500 steps to the sand, 1,500-bottle wine cellar and 15,000 feet of indoor/outdoor living for a list price of around $15 million. The contemporary, two-level residence sprawls over approximately 10,000 interior square-feet, encompassing six bedrooms, all en-suite and two powder rooms with custom finishes. A sleek foyer opens to a fully upgraded open kitchen with ocean views leading to a great room, formal dining and a rather impressive outdoor entertaining space. Your inner Tony Stark lights up at the sexy, six-vehicle subterranean garage. Needless to say, homes of this footprint and stature in such an esteemed zip code are exceedingly rare. The lower level is stacked with custom features including a movie theater, bar lounge, art room and gym. The most swoon-worthy feature? An alfresco wet bar grotto leading to a Jacuzzi spa perched dramatically over the beach, a sun-kissed sanctuary surveying distant ribbons of sand
lapped by the rolling sea. Designed with rosé-all-day reunions in mind, this is the hidden sweet spot where you can shuck fresh oysters on your wet bar as a tangerine sunset illuminates the sky. It's hard to recall the rest of the world exists when there’s pillowy soft Kumamotos on deck. The showstopper? A platform outdoor space that leverages its prime position perfectly, worshipping the sun and fresh air, a podium made for pleasure at the beach. Framed by lush terroir, the terrace is where it’s at—infinity pool overlooking the ocean, grill station and enough open space for a significant sculpture or art installation. The sheer sprawl cries out for Sol Lewitt or Anish Kapoor. Not to say your early Richard Serra won’t do in a pinch. A sophisticated mix of polished stone and glass, the open floor plan transitions seamlessly from indoor to outdoor entertaining with ease. Here, luxury is more a feeling of open space than mere gilded gold leaf. It’s that delicious sensation of getting cozy by fireplaces in nearly every room and breakfast in bed under cathedral-vaulted ceilings. The master suite boasts a trophy case of amenities—his and hers walk-in closets outfitted with custom cabinetry, a bathing pavilion worthy of Beyoncé and a private terrace to take in the views. Kick back and relish in a fine Riesling as the majestic magic hour takes hold at dusk. With the epitome of business in the front, party in the back, the exterior buttons
up for maximum curb appeal at the main door, but reveals a hedonist’s playground in the rear. Succumbing to such spoils is like sliding down a wish-granting lamp—a master closet you could park a Mercedes G Wagon in and a cinema complete with a candy bar. Designed to maximize natural light and the endless sea, high ceilings throughout results in a bright, airy impression throughout the interior. If luxury homes could win Oscars for best performance in a leading layout, we give it to 121 Milford, clinching the win on its high cheekbones alone. How does such a lavish lair worthy of a James Bond love scene come into being? When it comes to high net-worth clientele with lofty ambitions in Newport Beach, Brian Liberto is the king connector of coastal builds in this elite arena. Part gladiator, part real estate consultant, he has shown grit and grace in mentoring the Milford stakeholders through all aspects of creating value in this unparalleled project. Cameo Shores looks and feels like a wondrous campus for the wealthy and well connected. Stroll around the corner from this Milford Drive estate and you’ll find the renown Portabello Estate, an architectural landmark listed at a cool $76 million in 2006. Forbes once named it one of the 10 most expensive homes for sale in North America (only oligarchs need apply). Enchanting doesn’t even begin to cover it.
