It’s a Vibe Incorporating florals and pops of purple and green, stylist Melissa Souza says, “When choosing looks, I always think about the talent wearing the pieces and really try to hone in on their style. Of course, with editorial, a major factor to account for is the mood and theme of the shoot.” Hair and makeup artist Jennifer Mau says, “With this look and the vibe that they are going for, I thought it would be fun to do that kind of pompadour look. He has really great hair!” Thinking Green Larracuente poses in front of a succulent wall in a simple green sweater while looking directly into the camera. He then lays on a rug in a cream top and plaid jacket, as photographer Andrea Domjan stands above him on a ladder to get the perfect, dreamy shot. “I wanted the pieces to come alive on their own but also highlight the location and—of course—Brandon’s own vibe. I’m really torn between favorites!” says Souza. That’s a Wrap Music from Khalid blasts throughout the shoot, as the camera snaps a variety of images. In order to crack an even bigger smile, Fiancée Jazmin Garcia steps into the background to be Larracuente’s main focus. As the shoot wraps and the last shot of the day is taken in the on-site greenhouse, the team applauds one another to celebrate a successful morning of creativity. Brandon Larracuente shows up to his cover shoot right on time, wearing a salmon pink jumpsuit with his fiancée by his side. “I think the older I’ve gotten, the more comfortable I’ve become at just wearing what I feel like fits me in the moment,” Larracuente says with a smile. This outlook goes far beyond his personal style; it shows throughout his acting career and how he’s grown to be so comfortable in his own skin. Flashback to his freshman year of high school, where Larracuente was cast as the lead role of Danny Zuko in “Grease.” After that, he began to shy away from acting, as there was an aspect of negativity associated with it. “I was ridiculed, in a way, by my friends about being a part of the thespian side; [it was] just frowned upon for some reason,” explains Larracuente. “I would go for commercials periodically throughout high school, and I remember one time in specific, I booked a commercial. I filmed it, and one of my peers at school told me, ‘I saw you on a commercial last night,’ and I denied it. I was like, ‘No, that wasn’t me.’” It wasn’t until after high school when Larracuente realized that he wanted to devote his life to acting and go full-force into the industry. “After high school, I booked the show called ‘Bloodline,’ where I finally began to pursue my passions and my interests and my dreams without really caring about what others thought of me,” he says. After playing the character Ben Rayburn on “Bloodline” from 2015 to 2017, Larracuente was cast in the movie Bright on Netflix—one of his most interesting and challenging roles to date. “I played an Ork, which is a mythical creature. I had to learn Orkish—which is a made-up language,” says Larracuente. Playing this character involved getting into prosthetics every day for 15-hour days; it would take about an hour to get in costume and an hour to take it off. There was also a dialect coach on set to help learn and practice the language his

66 LOCALE MAGAZINE

character spoke. According to Larracuente, “It was very fulfilling and rewarding because it was so challenging.” He also had the incredible opportunity to act alongside one of his dream co-stars, Will Smith, during this film. Larracuente was then cast in “13 Reasons Why” as Jeff Atkins. He initially auditioned for a different character, since Atkins isn’t in the original book that the series is based on. Because of this, it allowed Larracuente to really build the character as he saw fit. Atkins was a leader—a classmate who stuck up for other people. “I related to Jeff in a way because he was a friend I wish I would’ve had in high school,” Larracuente explains. At age 21, Larracuente moved across the country from Florida to Los Angeles, a challenge that allowed him to grow as a man and human being. “I had dreams and aspirations of moving out here [to California]. Not at 21, it would’ve been many years later, but due to booking ‘13 Reasons Why’ I was kind of forced to speed up the process,” he says. Although home was always a call away, he tried to minimize depending on his family. “I felt like the more I relied on Mom and Dad, the less of a man I was or the less I grew. I’m a firm believer that [people grow] through hard times,” Larracuente explains. Expressing there were times he struggled and didn’t know how he was going to pay rent, he always figured it out in the end. “I would not change anything because it’s given me the passion and the drive that I need to keep on waking up and facing every day,” says Larracuente.

Dreaming Big •While Larracuente had dreams of being a professional baseball player in high school, he realized he couldn’t deny his passion for acting any longer.

Travel Bug •Larracuente’s favorite city is Barcelona. “We went to Spain two years ago, and I had a phenomenal time,” he says. “We rode bikes around the entire city. I love the culture, the food and the people.”

“After high school, I booked the show called ‘Bloodline,’ where I finally began to pursue my passions and my interests and my dreams without really caring about what others thought of me.” —BRANDON LARRACUENTE Now in his latest role, Larracuente plays eldest child Emilio Acosta in the new Freeform show, “Party of Five,” a reboot of the popular ‘90s drama. While there are some similarities to the original, this version shows the Acosta parents being deported to Mexico by ICE agents (in the original, the parents are killed in a car accident). This leaves 24-year-old Emilio Acosta with a heavy responsibility of having to step up and take care of his four younger siblings, rather than going off and pursuing his music career. The show exhibits an emotional, human perspective of political issues that the United States is facing today. “I’m Latin and grew up in a very Hispanic culture, so it helps to get that sense of who [the characters] are and the Hispanic community,” says Larracuente. “It helps build and add elements and layers to the character that maybe somebody who is not Latin may not have.” There’s something Larracuente can take away and learn from every role he’s portrayed. “I think every character that I’ve had thus far, I’ve been fortunate enough to relate to them in some way shape or form.” Larracuente wants to be remembered as somebody who does good and impactful work. “I’m really passionate about things that make people think and make people either leave a theater or go to bed at night thinking about things a bit differently than maybe prior to watching the show,” he says. And with that attitude and mindset, he has big dreams and hopes for the future generation of those in the film industry. “I hope for more inclusivity for all ethnicities and cultures. We’re on the right track, but there’s always room for improvement.” Larracuente expresses that the younger generation should continue to strive for big dreams no matter how big or small they may seem. “I think that we

need to continue to give confidence to the younger generation who is coming up now because they are the ones that are going to be ruling the world one day when we’re long gone,” he says. Aside from his growing fame and following of over 1 million fans on Instagram, Larracuente is just a normal 25-year-old going after his wildest dreams. When he has a break from filming, you can find him reading a book, drinking tea in the morning, hiking with his pup or laying on his couch watching “This Is Us.” He also recently proposed to his long-time girlfriend, Jazmin, in Yosemite National Park. “It was a very intimate moment; it was at the end of filming. I had been filming for about three or four months, and we took a little trip to Yosemite, and it was just us. It was us in a cabin, and it couldn’t have been more perfect,” says Larracuente. The two are a force to be reckoned with, as they support one another’s aspirations of acting, producing and writing while living together in North Hollywood. Brandon and Jazmin recently hired a writer for the original they are currently developing. They are also striving to adapt a New York Times best-seller. Solidifying the love and support for one another, she encourages Larracuente the morning of the cover shoot, bringing a light of positivity and smiles to the set (and stealing a few kisses in between looks). In five years, Larracuente hopes to have had his first directorial debut, whether that’s a short film or an episodic. And in 10 years? “I hope to be comfortable. I hope to have a family. I hope to be in a position where I can choose projects that fit what I need as a human being but also what my family needs.” With what he’s accomplished in just these past few years, there’s no doubt that these goals will be met—and exceeded. Brandon Larracuente is just getting started.

Eli Marmar and Martin Kim, co-founders of Freewaters, have designed eco-friendly footwear for all seasons—sandals, shoes, boots and house slippers included. “Sandals continue to be our biggest category, and we offer everything from classic leather styles to adventure sandals and slides,” says Marmar. But footwear is not all they are planning and designing. Every pair sold from the day they started has helped support clean drinking water projects. “To date, we have completed 85 projects in Haiti, Kenya and the Philippines in partnership with our grassroots partners Framewrx, UntilThen and Primer Group,” says Marmar. Aside from their clean water projects, Freewaters also makes sure their products are sustainable and eco-

friendly. “From our beginning, we have insisted on water-based glues and PVC-free rubber,” says Marmar. They also introduced responsibly sourced leather, as leather tanning has generally been a very water- and chemical-intensive process. “We partnered with an award-winning tannery where 100% of the water used is naturally purified by on-site wetlands,” Marmar says. The duo describe their footwear as being for “global citizens,” meaning people who want to explore new places and connect with different people and cultures. “Being a global citizen is different than being a tourist,” explains Marmar. “It’s about being authentically interested in and aware of how other people live and wanting to be a part of the solution to the struggles they may be facing.”

OC FRESCA OFFERS A FRESH TAKE ON SOUTH-OF-THE-BORDER FARE

This past October, the quaint beach town of San Clemente welcomed OC Fresca, a fresh-faced coastal restaurant serving Latin-inspired bites and boozy agua fresca cocktails. Situated across from the Ole Hanson Beach Club, OC Fresca established itself in a quirky historic building just steps from the water. “Think back to the ’70s, when people would go on surfing trips to Mexico and South America and come back and try to replicate the cuisine,” explains OC Fresca General Manager Pedro Robles. With a menu chock-full of unique south-of-theborder snacks and shareables to go with a wide range of cold-pressed frescas, this new addition to the SoCal foodie scene is here to stay––and make waves.

FOOD • From frescas and tacos to shareables like the queso fundido and shrimp ceviche, OC Fresca goes beyond the traditional.

While Mexican restaurants are a dime a dozen in Southern California, OC Fresca brings a mixed-culture approach to the fare they serve. From best-sellers like the achiote shrimp and crispy buffalo cauliflower tacos to traditional Peruvian dishes like the lomo saltado, OC Fresca incorporates a variety of flavors from South American countries. “It’s a little bit of everything,” says Robles. “Our empanadas are made by one of our guys who’s from Colombia, but they also have a little Argentinian flavor with the chimichurri.” The freshness doesn’t stop with the food. OC Fresca’s signature cocktails are made with cold-pressed juices using real fruit. “Some restaurants say, ‘We have fresh juices,’ but they get it from the gallon,” explains Robles. Unlike other restaurants, OC Fresca has a glass-walled kitchen on site that’s dedicated solely to juicing. Guests have the opportunity to watch as fruits like mangoes, berries, watermelons and pomelos

It reminds me of my abuelita’s house in Mexico.” In addition to the traditional Spanish accents and beachy wooden interior, the space incorporates funky patterns and bright pops of pink, orange, yellow and blue. The expression that we “eat with our eyes” is certainly true in the case of Black Tap. You may know this cult eatery more from the photos you’ve seen on social media than by its name. Lucky for us, they’ve brought their culinary delights to SoCal, so we can taste it all for ourselves.

• Chef Parker created the award-winning Greg Norman burger for Black Tap’s first location in Soho. Five years later (and with locations in 15 countries), it’s still on the menu and a fan favorite.

Black Tap got its start in the Soho district of New York City in 2015. After expanding across Manhattan, they’ve now made their way to the West Coast. Known for their award-winning burgers and colorful CrazyShake milkshakes, their newest outpost is embracing a California vibe.

• The Strawberry Shortcake CrazyShake was inspired by Chef Parker’s favorite dessert as a child and is sold exclusively at Black Tap’s Anaheim location.

• Chef Parker’s secret culinary talent? He has great French cooking techniques and loves preparing Vietnamese cuisine—two skills he picked up from his stepmom, who is a chef as well.

Corporate Executive Chef Stephen Parker is leading the team at their Anaheim location in Downtown Disney. We caught up with the chef to find out how Black Tap is crafting burgers, wings and beverages in its new SoCal spot while staying true to its NYC roots. Chef Parker was drawn to the restaurant industry at a young age. After receiving his Master’s degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management at Fairleigh Dickinson University, he spent 300 days in Switzerland, broadening his cooking repertoire. Upon his return to the Tri-state area, he started working for Chef Michael Fiore at his restaurant in New Jersey. In 2015, he had an opportunity to consult with the Black Tap family. One of the burgers he developed for their first Soho location is still on the menu today: The Greg Norman burger, named after one of golf’s greatest and most colorful players. “I loved developing this burger. It was the first great burger I found and loved. It’s all about the combination of Australian Wagyu beef, fresh arugula and a creamy house buttermilk with dill,” says Chef Parker. 118 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Since joining Black Tap in his current role, Chef Parker has worked tirelessly to develop new and exciting items for the menu. “We are a modern American diner, or luncheonette. We want our restaurants to feel familiar, comfortable, but cool. If you’ve ever had ramen before, it’s probably safe to say that you’re a fan. A bold statement, I know, but if you’ve experienced ramen in its most authentic form, then you understand just how alluring the experience can—no—should be. From the stacked layers of aromas that gracefully stimulate the senses to the light cascade of steamy broth touching your tongue and finally, that delightful feeling of the long, gooey noodles making its way from palate to belly. Yes, ramen done right is an experience, indeed, and it’s the type of experience you can expect from Fountain Valley’s Ryu Ramen.

Upon entering Orange County’s latest ramen establishment, you cannot help but become pleasantly enthralled by the wonderful display of Ryu team members cranking out piles of freshly prepped noodles, stationed in what is known as the “Noodle Room.” Owner, creator and Chef Ryu Isobe explains, “We have an open kitchen which allows guests not only to see the food being prepared but to feel the energy of the kitchen as they dine. And I also wanted my cooks to be able to see the joy they give people with the work they do.” Similar to how precious works of art are showcased in museums, the noodles are openly on display for guests to observe, as the noodle preparation is an art form in itself. “We are dedicated to being a from-scratch kitchen. We make a claim of serving authentically prepared ramen, and a huge part of this is making our own noodles,” explains Chef Ryu. Because Ryu prepares its noodles in-house, there is an element of control in everything—down to the flour, water PH levels and even the thickness of the noodles. “You will notice that the noodles here at Ryu Ramen are thinner than most other ramen restaurants, and that is on purpose. The thinner the noodle, the more noodles in a bowl, creating more surface area for the broth to cling to, which is a large part of how our ramen is so flavorful.” With a colorful list of masterful creations to choose from, Ryu Ramen has something for everyone to enjoy, but the Ooh Mami Ramen is an absolute must-try. “The Ooh Mami Ramen is our most flavor-forward ramen,” says Chef Ryu. Prepared with ingredients that are made with the time-

honored tradition of the Japanese ramen masters of the past, Chef Ryu decided to incorporate enticing elements that would take ramen to the next level. As the broth is the soul of the bowl, the flavors are united with tastes and textures that are made from a rich and creamy Tonkotsu pork broth, consisting of a special garlic and tangy Gochujang miso paste, all entrenching the delicate noodles, juicy ground beef, kikurage mushrooms, toasted sesame and chopped scallions (you can also choose from rich pork belly chashu, tender chicken breast or organic tofu). This festival of flavors is topped with the secret ingredient that is often found in authentic Japanese ramen: “Mayu.” Ryu’s is made in-house by using the traditional method of slowly cooking garlic in oil on low heat for an extended amount of time. This creates sweetness while also adding a charred element to the oil. When asked for the inspiration behind opening a restaurant, Chef Ryu responded, “I just took my commitment to quality, authenticity and innovation and applied it to ramen… I wanted to share that with the world.” He concludes: “Ryu Ramen is the accumulation of all my lessons learned from mistakes I’ve made, new ideas and quality standards I have developed that for one reason or another was not able to implement at other restaurants I have been a part of. A silver Lamborghini Huracán drifts throughout Lamborghini Newport Beach, burning rubber and doing 360-degree spins while gracefully passing high-class cars awaiting to be sold. At the wheel sits Stina Hübinette, a renowned stunt driver with years of experience in road, endurance and time racing. The video of her Huracán drifts was posted online and has since become a viral sensation.

A

Hübinette is a Northern Sweden native who grew up driving go-karts in the summers and riding sleighs in the winter. When her boyfriend at the time (now husband Samuel Hübinette) earned his green card in 2001, Stina came to visit Southern California in 2004 and chose to stay. Samuel, who’s also a stunt driver, used to work as a driving instructor where he’d help clients of car manufacturers drive on-track. While attending many of these driving events, Stina became knowledgeable about the road and learned how to pull in good lap times. Recognizing her natural abilities, Samuel became invested in putting Stina behind the wheel.

“He saw the potential in me and thought if I started road racing to build up my reputation as a good driver, I would make it to the Hollywood industry as a stunt driver,” Stina says. She performed well in many road racing events, having earned a spot on the podium in several, and eventually got a break in commercials. “I’ve been blessed to be super busy with different manufacturers, and I love every job I do.” Since then, Stina has been featured in a variety of commercials as a stunt driver, including a Super Bowl commercial for the Audi e-tron, and she doubled for Maisie Williams in “Game of Thrones.” Most recently, she performed as a stunt double for Naomi Scott in the new Charlie’s Angels movie. I guess you can say she has officially made it to Hollywood.

filmmaker Nirvan Mullick, the day began with an errand—to stop by a used auto parts shop in East LA for a door handle. For 9-year-old Caine Monroy, it started with getting his cardboard arcade open and ready for business in front of his family’s shop. It was a chance encounter that would turn into a viral video and the documentation of how a small act of kindness and a spark of creativity can transform into an incredible blaze, benefitting millions. This was the beginning of Imagination.org.

When Mullick met Monroy and saw the ingenuity and raw creativity of his cardboard arcade, he knew he had to share it with the world. Mullick spoke with Monroy’s father, the owner of the used auto parts shop, and began to interview and film for a 10-minute video called “Caine’s Arcade.” That Sunday, Mullick filmed the last portion of the video: a flashmob to come and play at the arcade, which resulted in a wave of overwhelming support across the internet as well as in LA itself. Shortly after the film was published, it went viral. “What was unexpected was the response to the film,” Mullick says. “I got thousands of emails from parents and teachers showing me pictures of kids starting to make arcades out of cardboard after watching the movie...asking, ‘What can we do to foster their creativity?’” Unlike some humanitarian efforts, Imagination. org wasn’t a lifelong vision; it was the result of pure kismet, and a few days after Mullick saw the public’s reaction to “Caine’s Arcade,” both in views and in outreach, he “decided to try to make a non-profit to support more kids like Caine and make creativity a core social value [and] really foster the creativity in every child.” Fate continued to work in Mullick’s favor; the then-unnamed effort began receiving grants, and the organization blossomed. “We didn’t have any programs at the time, and

now we have multiple,” he explains. “Our first program was the Global Cardboard Challenge, which invited kids around the world to make anything they could imagine with cardboard, and then on the anniversary of the flashmob we did for Caine, [we started] Global Day of Play, [which prompted communities to have] flash mobs for their kids who were building things out of cardboard.” There’s no doubt how impactful these programs have been. Since Imagination.org started Global Day of Play in 2012, they have had over one million kids participate. The organization was also starting to get noticed. “We started getting invited to speak and share our story at conferences and various events for different companies,” notes Mullick. And it was at one of these conferences where Vans heard their story. “[Vans was] thinking about their first International Checkerboard Day to really foster creative expression,” Mullick explains. The two companies found a connection through cardboard, and their partnership led to an incredible event, which premiered on Nov. 21, 2019, as well as a jaw-dropping donation of $1 million. “That million dollar grant is going to really help us go to the next level with all of our programs,” he says.

“It means over 100 new chapters in countries around the world, including China, France and for kids in refugee camps,” Mullick continues. “[And] we’ll be expanding our upcycling materials through our Trash 4 Teaching Division and our STEAM Programs.” But it doesn’t stop there. Imagination.org plans to launch a program where the organization will team up with retailers to add a “ReImagine” symbol on their boxes “that will invite kids to reimagine the box before they recycle it.” Imagination.org has an endless stream of ideas on how to benefit the lives of children around the world that parallels the spirit of that creative little boy in “Caine’s Arcade”—and it should! Monroy, now 17, is still a big part of the organization and wears the official title of Junior Board Member, serving as a reminder that a little ingenuity goes a long way. “It’s really about the combination of imagination and creativity,” Mullick says. “Imagination is the ability to dream up something that maybe hasn’t existed before, and creativity is the ability to actually create what you imagined.” Mullick keeps this sentiment close to Imagination.org’s mission and future goals. “What we want is to raise this next generation and give them the creative confidence to build the world that they imagine,” he explains, “but then also raise the next generation of problem solvers who can help us imagine the world that we can build together.”

It’s staggering to think that the number of people left homeless in Southern California alone totals over 50,000. With organizations like the Illumination Foundation, whose sole purpose is to combat the concerning problem of homelessness, those most vulnerable to the epidemic are able to find relief. With their headlining fundraiser, OC Chef’s Table, which took place on March 1, the Illumination Foundation is able to concentrate its efforts into healthcare and creating more emergency and permanent housing where it is needed most.

Magic in the Making

• This year, the Illumination Foundation honored Gensler Newport Beach, one of the largest architectural firms in the world, and Bob Dalton, CEO of Sackcloth & Ashes, a mission-driven company that strives to ease the burden of homelessness by donating blankets to homeless shelters. Together, their efforts in fundraising, volunteering and bringing awareness to the issue of homelessness are an illuminating inspiration to us all.

• Every year, the Disneyland® Resort lends its Grand Ballroom for the evening’s festivities for a night sprinkled with lots of fairy dust and a dash of salt and pepper. The space is transformed into a unique wonderland with extravagantly set tables put together individually by the featured chef’s team, providing a unique experience within the event itself. Even Mickey himself drops in for a little fun!

A Million Miracles

• Last year’s event was a tremendous success and helped raise over $1,000,000 that went toward the renovation of emergency homeless shelters in the communities that desperately needed it.

Ever since she was little, Maria Isles wanted nothing more than to be an interior designer and to own her own shop. And while life initially took her off-course from that dream, by the time her son was old enough, she went back to interior design school. That was eight years ago. Since then, Maria finished school, and she and Max found a space to turn Maria’s business goals into reality. “We found this little space on old Newport

Boulevard. It was so cute, so ramshackled...it was perfect!” “Max is a woodworker and furniture maker,” Maria notes. “He’s awesome at fixing anything. We revamped the whole store; now I do my interior design out of here. We have our style, so customers and other designers can shop our look, and we have a lot of Max’s pieces in here, so they can get an idea of what they can [have] made by him.” It’s easy to see why a marriage between an interior designer and a furniture

maker seems almost too good to be true. “When I started interior designing, I found that a lot of our clients needed one-of-a-kind pieces or custom furniture,” Maria explains. “[Max] can make anything—I was so lucky. I’d ask, ‘Can you make a coffee table in a week?’ And he’d be able to whip it up! He’s so talented—it was the perfect combination for us to start a business like that.” Isles Interiors is not only a culmination of the couple’s talents and skill sets, but of their styles as well. “It’s so nice to design [pieces] together with the client’s input,” she shares. “It all works out really well.” “It’s fun to bring out a story for the client—whether it’s the room or the whole house, it just really has to flow,” she explains. To achieve that, Isles Interiors’ process relies on finding or creating one-of-a-kind pieces that tie it all together.

Brooks and Jenny Crawford share more than a marriage—they share a business and a passion to combine their skills to create beautiful spaces. “At the beginning of January 2019, we started this adventure fully selfemployed, and it’s been great so far,” Brooks says. And while Jenny was always supportive of Brookside Design behind the scenes, her true niche in the company swiftly made itself apparent.

“When Brooks started in January...I was helping him with social media and background things,” Jenny explains. “But then we decided to do photoshoots of his projects to really build our portfolio.” Upon seeing outdoor furniture à la Home Depot paired with her husband’s stunning work, Jenny decided to pull everything out and stage it herself for the shoot. When the clients saw the decor transformation, they were amazed, making her “realize that there was a real niche

Since then, the pair has been proudly offering clients the entire package—literally. “You’re not just seeing a landscape installation, like hardscape and plants,” Brooks says. “It’s all those furnishings that give the space that magazine-quality look, which everybody wants!” “It takes really great taste and curation to create that composition,” he continues. “That’s where Jenny has been really amazing.” Interacting with the couple, it’s clear to see that the bond they share is the epitome of what a healthy marriage looks like, and they’re proud of the efforts that they’ve put into that. “Working together has forced our relationship to grow—running a business is a pressure test on your marriage,” notes Brooks. “I really enjoyed growing with Jenny this last year. It

For Sara and Rich Combs, what began as a cross-country road trip to escape the daily grind turned into a booming project, dedicated to helping others reconnect with themselves and with nature.

“without questioning it,” they bought The Joshua Tree House. While it originally began as a home for them to reset and work on their own projects, the Combs soon found success in listing their home as an Airbnb.

“We really fell in love with Joshua Tree on that trip,” Sara says. “After we went back [home] to New York, we kept thinking about how good it felt there, how creative we felt there with the open landscape.”

“We realized other people were craving a space like that as well,” Sara shares. “We eventually opened it up full-time for bookings, and then we fell in love with creating spaces for people where they can reconnect with nature and have that time to reset.”

The couple was drawn back to the California desert, and 172 LOCALE MAGAZINE

From there, the couple began renovating more spaces and taking on more projects, which has, in turn, shone a light on how they work together as a team. While both share a similar aesthetic, Rich is more detail-oriented, and Sara is more big-picture. “Even when we were [painting] in high school and college, Sara would always work with all these really big brushes and use her entire arm,” Rich explains. “Then I would come in with a very small brush and paint the little details.” While both their business and personal relationship sound worthy of a storybook, the journey hasn’t been without its obstacles. In 2019, the pair took on their largest and most challenging project yet: The Posada in Arizona. “We got this property in Tucson that was an old, abandoned inn, and we wanted to renovate it,” Sara shares. “It was the biggest space we’d ever done, and we just went for it because it felt perfect.” They soon found

Plants blur the line between indoors and outdoors. that perfection doesn’t come easily. The property was draining both their energy and finances, and the space was simply not cooperating with them. Now the couple is taking a well-deserved break—“resting, relaxing and reconnecting,” the Joshua Tree way.

THIS SOCAL COMPANY IS SHAPING THE ART OF POTTERY AS WE KNOW IT WRITTEN BY: DIEGO E. GAXIOLA PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NIKI CRAM Founded over 45 years ago, ARCHPOT is a family-owned small business behind the design and creation of breathtaking fire and water features and gorgeous pottery, found in a multitude of locations around the country. “Something a lot of people don’t know, being a smaller family business, is that we are in some pretty well-known hot spots. The Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Fashion Island and Pelican Hill in Orange County and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC,” explains ARCHPOT’s General Manager Tim Hall. An Orange County local, Hall, reminisces of his humble beginnings, detailing how the company transformed from a wholesale nursery to a highlyreputable manufacturer.

Thinking back to his childhood, Hall states, “I have always been creative and originally wanted to become an architect.” After Hall and his family moved from Mission Viejo to Tustin, he began to shadow his father, immersing himself in the art of pottery creation and familiarizing

himself with the challenges often faced when running a business. “The family business started off with plants—we were a wholesale nursery. Later came the marriage of plants and imported pottery, creating Architectural Pottery in 1989,” he says. Hall attributes a lot of his creativity to others’ creations on social media. “People inspire me. I like to see what is out there, and I ask myself how I can do better. How can I put a product out there that people will want in their home or business space?” In 2019, 30 successful years later, the family decided to rebrand the company, unveiling the name ARCHPOT. “Of course, in every family business, there are challenges. Any challenge we have had has resulted in growth,” explains Hall. With the continued expansion of the company, Hall and his team are able to focus on delivering products that truly distinguish themselves from others in the market. From the material and finish process to ARCHPOT’s utilization of high-tech and lightweight cement, the company is constantly striving to create products that exemplify expert craftsmanship. Overseas Inspiration • When Hall was just 17, he took a trip to Greece where he watched handthrown pottery being shaped. It was at that moment he realized the creation of pottery was indeed an art form. In the Works • Currently, ARCHPOT is working on custom Belize fire tables for the historic Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. “We are taking such pride in this project because of the historic location.”

A San Diego State alum, Clasen kick-started her post-college career in advertising before setting her eye on the sky for a brief stint as a flight attendant, which was a way to guarantee her travel itch would get scratched. She grounded herself after 3 years and made her way into the surf industry as an instrumental part of bigname companies like Raisin Swimwear, Roxy and Paul Frank. Clasen went on to co-found a company called Alice Supply Co.—a line of hip housewares that took your everyday items and candy-coated them in color. This was Clasen’s intro to the world of interiors, and she rode the wave into the industry and never looked back.

Clasen launched her career as an interior designer six years ago and has quite literally branded her name into the business (seriously, she owns a brander). Clasen just does things differently. She puts the “fun” in functional and thinks imperfect is exciting. She loves to pair old and new, borrowed and blue and is always striving for that “big wow moment” in a space. Clasen often opts for oversized anything to give a project some pizazz and infuses her love of surf culture into her designs. Attention to detail is in her DNA, and every square inch of a room—from the floorboards to the ceiling beams—is fair game for extra flair. Clasen is someone who can’t help but color outside the lines, and the result usually falls somewhere between cool and crazy. “I owe it to my clients to give them creative and new–I don’t just want to play my greatest hits.” And people are obsessed. From hello to yellow, everybody is living for Clasen’s local-gone-loco design style that you can find plastered all over Pinterest. Clasen can go bright and light or moody and modern, but she always finds a creative way to incorporate elements of the ocean to pay homage to her hometown. She does this through playing with textiles like macramé or mudcloth to add dimension and texture to a room, sometimes even DIYing it to get the exact look she wants. But what really sets Clasen apart is her ability to get to know her clients, find their quirks and unique subtleties and then customize her creations accordingly. Whether it’s framing a forgotten flea market find, hanging a gallery wall of guitars or unveiling an installation featuring a family catchphrase, Clasen personalizes every project with pride and does so with a huge infectious smile on her face. Attempting a coastal cool makeover can often leave you shell-shocked. If you’re feeling un-shore of yourself, check out these tide and true tips from expert Raili Clasen to avoid looking like a fish out of water.


Step 1:

• Name Your Project. “That’s the first thing I do when I start a project... I name it in my own mind–I don’t even tell anybody. Everything we put in the house has to fit into that name.”

Step 2:

• Begin With a Blank Canvas. “Paint everything white and bring in natural elements; create as much natural light as possible. Bring in natural elements like any kind of woods. Oak is very chic, but I am loving pine and plywood at the moment. It’s very kitschy, but it translates really well into coastal.”

Step 3:

• Pick a Personality Piece. “Whether it’s art, a mural, a gallery wall or maybe it’s an installation like the ‘Count Your Blessings’ wall I had in my house, you need a personality piece.” Clasen loves to use oversized prints or Almond Surfboards to create a “big wow moment.”

It’s being excavated from beaches in Mexico and other places,” General Manager Kurt Bjorkman explains. The sand is used in bunkers on the golf course, for bocce ball courts and also in sandbags.

Ú Partnering with the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, The Ranch at LB hosts an educational camping experience for children from the Inland Empire during the summer months. Most of the children have either never seen the ocean or have never camped. Waterman’s Ball and other local charitable fundraisers are also hosted on-site throughout the year.

All of the water on the course is reclaimed water—saving 90 million gallons of water a year. “If you’re a golf course in California and you’re not using reclaimed water, you’re going to have a really tough time, especially during drought season,” Bjorkman says. 4

Ú “The Thurston family homesteaded this entire canyon in 1871. They were here for a long time and then eventually moved into Laguna,” says Bjorkman. Towards the back of the property is a two-acre parcel that is home to the very first Girl Scout Camp in California, dating back to the 1920s.

you’re first taken down the road of old Southern California. Paintings of your favorite places before they were populated inspire a conversation around “how it used to be.” Eventually, you find yourself in the rotating gallery viewing pieces from Mary Blair, the imagineer at Disney behind Dumbo, Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland. It may not be the Louvre, but as you leave, a feeling of pride for California art puts some pep in your step on the way to your next stop. The door swings open to a burst of excitement inside Provisions Bottle Shop. Young dads sip on IPAs next to their kids while couples toast a glass of cab at the bar. Settling in the window seat up front, you order a glass of wine to accompany some charcuterie. The walking and perusing for the day subsides with sips of sauvignon blanc, as you watch the passersby out the window. While noshing on deviled eggs with a slowly building buzz, you welcome the French style of your day—or better yet, Orange style.
