There are few things I love more than food. Family, friends and my cat aside, there’s truly nothing better than the warm, tingly feeling that comes with the first bite of an amazing meal (unless it’s an amazing meal with those family, friends...or cat). You know those people who go for the light parfait for brunch? The people who only get one sushi roll at dinner? Yeah, I’m not one of those people. If you’re not either, then this Foodie Issue was made for you. I hope you brought your appetite because this year’s Foodie Guide (p. 71) is biting into the best pizza, sushi, tacos and everything in between that Orange County has to offer. The tried-and-true, the hidden gems, the unlikely heroes—chances are if you’ve cried over a mouth-watering meal somewhere, we’ve included it. We also talked to the expert chefs who craft these incredible dishes, including Five Crowns’ Alejandra Padilla (p. 84). Chef Padilla showed us her must-have tools while she’s throwing down in the kitchen. I normally save the cooking for the professionals, but after reading, I’m ready to sharpen my knives and get to work.
But first, dessert. We were excited to talk with this issue’s cover star and baking extraordinaire, Rosanna Pansino (p. 56). The YouTube star opened up about her successes and failures, and how a passion for baking led to cookbooks, crazy creations and one of the most successful baking shows on YouTube. On the topic of unstoppable women, our Shoppe Profile on Seea’s Amanda Chinchelli (p. 126) is a must-read. The women’s surfwear company not only brought fashionable, yet practical wetsuits to the game, but also practiced eco-friendly ethics in the process. And we got a peek into the colorful, clay world of Luna Reece Ceramics (p. 172). Consider our shopping carts full. It’s true, it is the time of year where you’re supposed to start fresh with a new diet or workout regime, but my personal resolution is to continue exploring the bountiful food, shopping and artistic options Orange County has to offer, head—and stomach— first. So I’ll save you a seat while you uncover them all for yourself, and I’ll see you at happy hour!

Even though this was Ro Pansino’s first photoshoot with multiple outfit changes, she handled the day smoothly and looked radiant in every look. Stylist Kimmy Erin Kertes’ clothing rack was filled with jewel tones, pinks and powdery blues. “Rosanna’s personal style is as bright as she is and I wanted the palette to reflect that, even in the winter months,” says Kertes. “It was fun to reenact a week in her life from baking, to business meetings, to writing, to red carpets and meet-ups and parties.”

And for Pansino, a photoshoot is just another day in the life. In between shots from photographer Andrea Domjan, Pansino’s expressive face never faltered. She turned to smile and posed for a behind-the-scenes video. Onset, Pansino was simultaneously larger than life and down to earth. She sat on the porch swing with her dog, Cookie, on her lap. Pansino joked about trying to find good poses with her short legs [she’s four-foot-ten like her Grandma] as Lauren Montgomery touched up her soft glam makeup. Pansino even did pilates exercises sitting on the countertop.
“We had a super fun shoot with Ro at this beautiful house in Manhattan Beach,” says Domjan. “Although that day it was a little gloomy, it couldn’t stop us from creating beautiful images of her and her cute Frenchie, Cookie.” Being on set and speaking with Pansino afterward provided a pivotal glimpse into her outlook and vibrant, bubbly personality. While the Manhattan Beach house brought charming personality and character to the photoshoot, the room did not come alive until Pansino stepped in. “Ro is one of those individuals who people instantly gravitate toward. She is charismatic, genuine, intelligent and so very kind. It’s easy to see how she grew such a huge following”, says Montgomery. After the busy four-and-a-half-hour photoshoot, Pansino sat down right away for an interview. While talking about her YouTube beginnings, Pansino had to pause to get a snack before continuing our conversation. Cookie, sitting in her stroller next to Pansino, perked up at the smell of peanut butter.

Yes, you feel that your vocal ability doesn’t amount to “pop star” level, and you may not have the body you strive so hard for, like the girls on the cover of magazines—but don’t worry Nadia, you’ll learn someday. I love how driven and ambitious you are. No dream is too big for you. When people ask you what you want to be when you grow up, your answer is always “a star!” What do stars do? They shine light. And you love being a light in people’s lives. You are going to enter a world one day where your job is going to be about the way you look and it will mess with your head, but don’t compare yourself to others! Rosanna “Ro” Pansino is best known for whipping up tasty desserts online. With a bubbly personality and sunny disposition, she’s filmed hundreds of videos on her “Nerdy Nummies” show since June 2011. From Frozen to “Game of Thrones”, she turns pop culture iconography into cakes and cookies. With over 10.8 million subscribers on YouTube, she is one of the platform's star bakers, creating content for her audience to consume and providing recipes so they can try it at home. Pansino’s role in the YouTube community, and her visibility on and off the platform, have only grown with each new video. Since her first video on baking a yellow fondant, Super Mario Star cake, she has become a star in her own right.

Before finding success as a YouTuber, Pansino pursued a career in the entertainment industry. She worked multiple jobs in Hollywood, including a set production assistant role before finding her calling on camera. “I was trying to find a home in entertainment and it naturally happened that [being] in front of the camera was easier [for me] than some of the jobs behind,” says Pansino, who would accidentally mix up coffee orders as a set PA due to dyslexia. While working on television, she spent her free time on YouTube. “I first started creating videos on YouTube just for fun,” says Pansino. At the time I wasn’t thinking about it as a career or business. It just was to get more comfortable in front of camera and have a creative outlet.” She was inspired by her friends who created videos full-time and was attracted to the variety of roles and skills involved in creating a video. “You were basically an entire production team in one person,” she remarks. “You were the producer, editor, host, marketer… you were everything.” Pansino created videos as a hobby, finding a balance between her television career and a medium that satisfied her creative self. But other people were not happy with the divided attention. As a member of the Screen Actors Guild, her agent pulled her into a meeting and gave her an ultimatum: quit YouTube or else. Pansino tried to persuade him. “I said there’s value here and I don’t think it needs to be one or the other,” Pansino shares, after reminding him that she booked her last commercial because the casting director’s daughter loved her YouTube channel. “New media and old media, I don’t think you really need to pick a lane. I really had the foresight eight years ago [that] you could do both and there was a symbiotic relationship.” Unfortunately, the agent did not agree. “A week later, I got a letter in the mail that they dropped me,” says Pansino. This action made her decision to pursue YouTube full-time easier. While she could have continued
to work on her TV show without representation, Pansino decided to focus all of her energy into creating her own content. “One of the main things I love about YouTube is you can be yourself and have full creative control over what you create. Because of that, I am able to show that it's okay to be yourself,” she says. Through trial and error, she perfected her techniques and evolved her channel. For Pansino, the idea to focus on baking wasn’t a conscious decision, but one cultivated through viewer response and desire. The Super Mario Star cake video, which has since amassed over 8 million views, was the catalyst for the “Nerdy Nummies” series. “It was the first time the community really got excited and I got a huge response,” says Pansino. “[They] said, ‘We want more of this. No geeky baking show exists on television or online, you’d be the first. Please create a geeky baking show, we would love this.’ So I did.” Besides her talent and creative concept, an important part of Pansino’s growth has been her willingness to listen and engage with her community. Because of YouTube’s interactive nature, she hears from her audience immediately after a video goes live. She’s built solid relationships with her Fansinos and fulfills their requests. “Something that’s really important is listening to your community whenever you’re building a business whether it’s online or offline,” Pansino remarks. “Whether it’s your customers or your clients, listening to their feedback and actually applying it.” Pansino is a content creator who is consistent, diligently posting her videos and sticking to a schedule on a regular basis. She doesn’t experience creative blocks, writer’s block or burnouts. “My problem is much the opposite where the creativity never shuts off,” she says. “It’s a wonderful thing but it also has its own set of issues where I don’t sleep a lot. It keeps me up at night.”

Her creative tick and lack of burnout are assets when you consider how much time and effort goes into producing a video. At the early stages of her YouTube, she would spend over 100 hours to make a six-minute video. After coming up with the concept, she would shop, source ingredients, test the recipe, bake the item in stages for the camera, shoot the recipe and edit the video. “When I did it all myself, I was producing one video every two weeks and the community wanted more content on a regular basis,” she says. To keep up with the demand for her content, Pansino considered her bottlenecks and hired additional hands to help her. She brought on a fast video editor and a food producer to help her bake in stages. Pansino assumes a creative director role where she comes up with ideas, tests recipes and decorates the baked goods. Her team still spends over 100 hours on each video, but the hours are divided more efficiently. With a creative and truly full-time job, one can wonder about work-life balance, but Pansino found a solution. “I think in the beginning there was no balance between work and personal life so I decided to integrate all of the people I cared about into work [by hiring them],” says Pansino. “It’s set up for longterm now, like a marathon versus a sprint. My life is not compartmentalized into two categories. It’s all together and it makes me personally very happy.” Setting up her business for the long-term has helped her pursue other projects. In 2018, Pansino arrived at a series of milestones: reaching 10 million followers, receiving the coveted YouTube Diamond Creators Award, releasing a Wilton baking line and publishing her second cookbook called “Baking All Year Round.” Pansino spent a year and a half working on “Baking All Year Round.” This cookbook features twice the amount of recipes as her 2015 cookbook “Nerdy Nummies” and is far more personal. It centers
around the motif of holidays which, as Pansino excitedly shared, was inspired by her community who wanted recipes to make for significant holidays and events. Pansino learned how to bake from her grandma at four years old so holidays were an important time to celebrate family. She dedicated the second cookbook to her parents and featured them in the book for the first time. “All the little blurbs before the recipes start are either little personal stories about the food or about the food and a memory,” says Pansino. “I, for so many years, have made baking tutorials so this is the first time I’ve opened up and made stories within a cookbook. So it’s just more special to me.” Along with opening up in the cookbook, she’s started to open up more online. As her audience has grown, the fans want to know more about Pansino and her personal life. “The [baking was] all I did because that was what the community wanted and was interested in,” she remarks. “My community still loves baking but they also want to get to know me more.” She started to expand her content, sharing fun videos of her playing games, collaborating with friends and providing more insight into her life through vlogs. “I really, truly am flattered and embarrassed by that because I never thought I’d be that interesting that someone would want to get to know,” says Pansino. “I [recently] started to create more content that was personal and I have loved it.” Empowered by her community, Pansino continues to shine both online and offline. While 2018 was an incredible year for her, there’s no doubt that 2019 will be even better. While she can’t disclose her upcoming projects yet, you can count on her to share the latest updates and baking creations on her channel. “I am super excited to focus on things my fans have been heavily requesting over the last year,” says Pansino. “I’m showing more of my life in my videos and branching out in fun and exciting ways. Even though I've been making videos for almost nine years, I'm feeling more energized than ever.”

It was a trip to the US that originally sparked Szandra Szabó’s interest in launching her own business. Szabó, who was born and raised in Szeged, Hungary, realized her passion for Hungarian desserts could truly be appreciated in the US as well. Today, Szabó, along with her business partner, is the founder, head pastry chef and CEO of House of Chimney Cakes, a bakery offering an assortment of the mouth-watering dessert known as a chimney cake. A chimney cake can best be described as a Hungarian sweet bread, consisting of a crisply-baked exterior with a light and doughy, hollowed-out interior. Once the sweet bread is baked and taken out to cool, any remaining heat trapped in the interior escapes from the top of the cake, creating a look similar to a chimney releasing smoke. Though this dessert can be mistaken for a churro or doughnut, it is far from the two due to the many organic, and some vegan, ingredients House of Chimney Cakes utilizes in their recipes. The desserts can either be enjoyed by creating your own from a variety of toppings and soft-serve flavors, or you can choose from the scrumptious signature creations Szabó has meticulously formulated. One signature creation that continues to gain popularity is the Everyday Birthday Cake. “The children inspired us to create this option because they love something cute and it has a birthday candle too,” Szabó says. The Everyday Birthday Cake consists of a traditional chimney cake cone, filled with an ice cream interior and colorful toppings like Fruity Pebbles and rainbow sprinkles. The final (and most exciting!) component of the Everyday Birthday Cake is the mini cupcake topped with a birthday candle that is carefully positioned at the peak of the chimney cake. Once this impressive chimney cake is completed, customers can ask for their candle to be lit—don’t forget to make a wish! Now, after one year of being in business, House of Chimney Cakes is looking forward to what the future has in store, and our guess is it’s going to be pretty sweet!

Since it’s opening in 2016, El Mercado Modern Cuisine has taken the Orange County foodie scene by storm. With an elevated menu of delicious dishes, unique cocktails and a cozy atmosphere, El Mercado has brought the attention back to Downtown

Santa Ana. The restaurant, which serves up modern cuisine, gives off a contemporary feel that also embraces a traditional touch. General Manager Jose Cerrudo and his business partner Fernando Franco said the concept was to “go back to the basics like in the [old] days [and] do a lot of things from scratch,” resulting in the use of real wood for many items. As for the black tables and chairs
throughout the restaurant, they brought in an architect to bring their vision to life. “We wanted little imperfections like back in the day,” said Franco, embracing the subtle discoloration of the tables and chairs. And for a touch of color? As a man with his own vision, Franco explained how the marble-textured, purple walls of El Mercado came from his own idea to choose a color that wasn’t a part of the original
palette. “There were only sepia, black, white and silver. Purple is for more eccentric people who know what they want. They don’t really mind what the other people think about them.” Made with a tossed, marble plaster, the color comes from a mixture of others to bring an apparent sheen during the day and an even more pronounced shine at night from the reflection of the dim, inviting dining lights—
which happen to be influenced by Franco’s grandmother’s living room. “[She] used to only have one light in the living room,” Franco shared. Every element of El Mercado is intentional and through both major and minor details, Cerrudo and Franco continue El Mercado’s homage to those lost days through decor, intentional imperfectness and life-changing cuisine.

Going to the beach is a great way to relax but finding a swimsuit that fits well, looks good and showcases your personal style can be challenging and stressful. It can be even tougher for female surfers who also consider the functionality and performance of a garment before heading to the beach. Longboard surfer, founder and fashion designer Amanda Chinchelli decided to tackle this challenge and create a brand that was both functional and fashionable for female surfers. Thus, Seea was born.
• Chinchelli’s favorite design is the best-selling Hermosa swimsuit. The sweetheart neckline and colors represent so much of the brand’s connection to surf, style and sun protection.
“I created Seea for myself in the beginning,” says Chinchelli. “I was very frustrated with what was out there as far as technical, performance-driven swimwear that looked good [and] was more on the fashion side. As a woman surfer, I saw a lot of other companies out there had male designer[s] or were maleoriented companies that were trying to reach out in that business.” Chinchelli emphasizes fashion, form and functionality with her designs. She founded Seea in 2011 and develops performance-driven and sun-protecting swimwear for women and children in cool, colorful designs and patterns. Inspired by femininity and the graceful dance of surfing, Chinchelli wanted to create products that focused on surf function but did not compromise

style. Her products are feminine, comfortable and fun. The retro-modern shapes of the swimsuits fit Chinchelli’s taste more than logo-emblazoned swimsuits commonly found on the market. “Because I’m a longboarder, I’m really attracted to the retro vibe and vintage feel,” says Chinchelli. Before moving into swimwear for women, Chinchelli worked in menswear and action sports. She got her start in the apparel industry working in Italy. She then moved to San Francisco with her husband where she worked as a product developer and designer for a skateboard company, while on the side she freelanced and created accessories. After a move to San Clemente, Chinchelli noticed the hub of swimwear factories, manufacturers and suppliers in the area and felt the wheels start turning. She knew it was the right time and place to start her own business. Even though Chinchelli had never designed for women besides herself before, she used her design experience and product development knowledge to transition to swimwear. Since swim is so technical, she taught herself the language and techniques to construct and produce garments that fit properly for a variety of movements and purposes. Along with style and fit, Seea focuses on sustainability. As a smaller company that produces domestically, Chinchelli sees the designs move from sketches to tangible products. Since the design studio is next to the factories and warehouses, she is extremely conscious of all the effects that growing her business, increasing production and utilizing more fabric have on the planet. “To me, it’s kind of impossible not to consider the impact that manufacturing and fashion has on the environment. It’s one of the most polluting industries that we have,” says Chinchelli. “You can’t just
produce beautiful things. You have to be aware of where these beautiful things go and how they get made.” Seea uses recycled fabrics and local factories to reduce its carbon footprint, ocean pollution and landfill usage. Chinchelli has used fabrics such as recycled polyester made from plastic bottles, recycled nylon from Italy and upcycled cotton that makes towels. She started expanding the company’s use of Yulex, a natural rubber, to replace neoprene for warmer suits. She’s also looking toward upcycling constructed garments so they can be reused for other purposes instead of ending in landfills. “That’s the most important way we want to go. To minimize waste and how we produce it,” remarks Chinchelli. When creating a new collection, Chinchelli draws inspiration from memories, places and textiles. The Seea Spring and Summer 2019 collection was inspired by Brazilian rainforests, islands, rhythms and nostalgia. Chinchelli grew up on the island of Ilhabela, Brazil, where she developed her love and connection to the ocean. Visiting the island again for her mother’s 70th birthday inspired her to create the new line which debuts in the spring. While each season brings new inspiration for a collection, Chinchelli maintains the signature colors that her customers love and listens to feedback from her team and customers. She describes the process as a collaborative effort and asks the women on her team to test the fit of the garments. “It’s really great to see the fit in different body types and I think that’s really important,” says Chinchelli. “That makes me really happy to hear that we can cover a lot of different body types and we are not just catering [to] slim, beautiful, perfect, young women [who] can wear small bikinis.”

While the educational influence of The Ecology Center is apparent, the pure and unadulterated beauty of the property makes it unique to its surroundings. “If you create a space that’s really beautiful and really inspirational, that’s how you get the conversation started,” explains Zaidman.
Walking up to The Ecology Center, located in the heart of San Juan Capistrano, is like stumbling across an agricultural oasis transporting you to a land of flora, fauna and farm-fresh fun. Of the many paths you can take, all roads lead back to the 142-yearold farmhouse which acts as the epicenter for all things ecology. We begin our tour of this horticultural utopia with Jonathan Zaidman at the helm. Zaidman is the regional expansion director for The Ecology Center and the innovative mind behind their latest educational offering, the Road Trip program.

Before delving into this new wonderland on wheels, Zaidman explains the founder of this decadeold organization “envisioned it as a model for sustainability in the home place, in the workplace and in the community.” The goal was and still is to inspire sustainable practices using simple solutions. This educational facility encourages hands-on participation to learn the tools for thriving on planet Earth. Their mantra is to educate through experience, which guarantees “meaningful moments for engagement every single day.” The Ecology Center and its mobile counterpart are all elements of a larger, multi-faceted entity that aims to teach willing individuals how to cultivate their own renewable lifestyles. They are marrying innovation with simplicity to teach approachable lessons that children and adults alike can adopt and apply. The center plants the proverbial seed
The desire to share this truly one-of-a-kind place is what led to the conception of the Road Trip program. The original concept was first imagined back in 2016 as an iteration of The Ecology Center on wheels. If people couldn’t come to The Ecology Center, then The Ecology Center could come to them. With accessibility at the forefront, Zaidman set out to foster this dream to fruition. In a twist of fate, he came across a company in his native San Diego that was selling doubledecker buses imported from the United Kingdom, one of which would soon act as the exoskeleton for this ambitious undertaking. Zaidman and his talented team went to work designing an interior that replicated the functionality of the bus’ brick-and-mortar muse, The Ecology Center, only on a much smaller footprint. The extensive build-out process required that everything from the skylight to the side door be built to spec, all while demonstrating interesting and innovative solutions. say. The entirely custom creation is adorned with 800 watts of solar panels, which powers all of the electrical elements of this behemoth botanical marvel. The bus itself runs strictly on biodiesel, an alternative fuel that can be sourced directly from various vegetable and cooking oils. The bus officially put the pedal to the pavement this past April and has since traveled all over Southern California transforming any parking spot into an ecological adventure. In 2018, the bus wrapped its first inaugural year on the road. The first season saw residencies at 12 schools with over 5,000 students of various social and economic backgrounds reached. In total, the bus has influenced over 11,000 people, having appeared at four festivals, two children’s museums and now, a full semester deep dive in a single school district in Encinitas, California. The bus itself has no shortage of eyecatching features. From the largerthan-life skylight to the colorful exterior, this mobile museum is leaps and bounds beyond your standard school bus. The Road Trip program promises to leave students and teachers alike feeling nourished with knowledge and confident in taking
the lessons learned and applying them to real life. The success of the bus has been all-organic, so to speak, relying on its interactive displays, kitchen classroom, handson DIY stations and more to bring about transformative experiences in communities near and far. “The real vision now is to focus on deep integration and impact through educational programming, connecting these communities with the common goal of spreading sustainable conventions with this bus as our catalyst for change,” says Zaidman. The focus of the bus, which is always being piloted and adjusted, is to have it be a more permanent part of a single community rather than a fleeting fixture with an ever-changing location. When it comes to people getting involved, the bus is always looking for dedicated volunteers to assist with set up, take down, events and general maintenance. Another way individuals can help is by signing up as a member of the Ecology Center, buying into their farm share community supported agriculture (CSA) program, and then ultimately actually making sustainable changes in their own life. “Give more than you take and together, we can inspire change.”

Aran Antunez is a Costa Mesa native whose passion for coffee and designing stunning works of latte art can be admired at Common Room Roasters, a specialty-coffee roastery located in Newport Beach. Antunez recalls how he originally began working in the coffee industry back in high school when he was approached by a good friend who managed a popular coffee shop near his home. Antunez began working at the coffee shop, allowing him to familiarize himself with the processes that result in the creation of outstandingly-delicious coffee. “As I was learning more about it, I started to realize I was pretty good at it and picked it up from there,” Antunez said.
Antunez has made his mark in the coffee industry thanks to his dedicated commitment to constantly learning and further mastering his passion for all things coffee. Seasonal Offerings • Common Room Roasters focuses on the rawness and purity of the coffee assortment they offer at the roastery. Latte art, an art form Antunez has truly mastered, is a detailed method of preparing coffee by carefully pouring microfoam into a shot of espresso. A barista is then able to embellish the microfoam with a design of their choice, resulting in a one-ofa-kind work of drinkable art. When it comes to Antunez’s inspiration while creating his masterpieces, he often chooses a specific design, allowing him to focus on components like symmetry and contrast to ensure his latte art always provides an excellent representation of years spent perfecting his craft. His love for latte art, as well as coffee in general, has motivated him to travel to different parts of the country to grow as a barista, business manager and latte art connoisseur. Throughout his career, Antunez has participated in Coffee Fest three times, an annual event he was chosen for due to his impressive background in latte art design. “I’ve competed twice in Portland and once in Seattle,” he said. When asked what inspires his designs, Antunez explained, “Growing up, I surrounded myself with a lot of people who were artistic.” That creative upbringing now helps to further motivate and guide him in his current role as the business development manager for Common Room Roasters, mainly focusing on customer relations, promoting the Melbourne-inspired brand, and, of course, ensuring his meticulously-designed latte art can continue to be enjoyed by the coffee-loving community. One of the chronic diseases the clinic focuses on is cancer. Before treatment, a screening includes “a mandatory genomic sequencing to determine cancer mutations and mutation burden,” said Dr. Dien Nguyen, ND. Get the Wheel Turning
When you enter the Luna Reece workspace, you immediately feel at home. That could be because it is the primary residence of owner and artist Andrea Luna Reece or because of the warmth and welcoming spirit she exudes. Her workspace is outwardly an oxymoron of organized chaos. Reece herself is the perfect paradox to her environment. She is the definition of a cool girl with her thick-rimmed glasses, red lipstick and collection of tattoos that tell a story of another lifetime.

Reece is a ceramics savant of sorts, referencing various kiln techniques and briefly touching on the chemistry that goes into her glazes. You can tell she is no amateur when it comes to the artistry behind her craft. The shelves are lined with greenware, a term she uses loosely to reference clay that has been shaped, but not yet fired, and finished pieces waiting to find their final home. And while her finished pieces would make any mantel proud, they are also perfectly imperfect in their handmade mystique. “With clay, you can’t be a perfectionist because there is so much out of our control,” Reece explains. “I mean I think you can do certain things to hone in on your skills and get better, but I don’t think anything is ever perfect.” Reece recalls a fond childhood memory of a toy wheel gifted to her when she 174 LOCALE MAGAZINE

was 6 or 7 years old. She remembers what it was like to create something out of nothing, using her favorite tools: her hands. This passion resurfaced as a student at Long Beach State, where she pursued her BFA in ceramics. “I love that [ceramics are] handmade, and it’s my hands touching them,” she says. “That’s why I love clay so much—it’s that direct contact. With a painting, there is a paintbrush between me and the canvas or a pencil or piece of charcoal whereas clay has that direct connection.” Armed with a needle tool and a sponge, Reece put two hands to the wheel and never looked back. And here we are, nearly a decade after she made ceramics her full-time gig, in a room filled with finished pieces inscribed with her initials, all bound for various local shops and vendors. In this corner of creativity, Reece doesn’t reference a famous artist or social media account for inspiration. She doesn’t recall an old professor or exhibit she once visited. Reece finds inspiration in her peers, her cohorts, even her competition. “All my maker friends out there chasing after their dreams—they inspire me, lift me up, let me complain, let me rejoice, hold me accountable and truly root for me,” explains Reece. While her pals provide her inspiration, Reece’s interests allow for ingenuity. She pulls from nature, the ocean, gardens and plants, architecture and vintage finds— to name a few. And while these areas provide an endless amount of imagery that can act as a catalyst supplying her subject matter, nothing is ever translated
literally. Everything is skewed through her visual lens. “Let’s take the rainbow, for example. I didn’t reinvent that. I didn’t make up the rainbow. It already exists in nature and on other pieces,” she says. “I just adopted it to my interpretation of that rainbow. It is filtered through me and onto my pieces.” Reece lights up her studio, which appears to be dripping in clay like ice cream on a sunny day. It mimics a Salvador Dali-like illusion, which is perhaps a metaphorical ode to how easy it would be to lose track of time in this creativity cavern. She favors a velvet, matte black glaze and a blushed pink veering on coral color, the perfect contrast of her hard and soft sides. Working early in the morning or late at night, she enjoys cleaning her space before creating, a nod to stripping down to that proverbial blank canvas. But when it comes to actually putting the pedal to the metal, Reece, like all artists, can feel overwhelmed, underinspired and ill-prepared to invent. To overcome this creativity block, she often has to find a way to reconnect with her work. “Sometimes I just need to sit in [my studio] and visually look around or just start making without an agenda or a goal and see where it takes me,” she notes. Perhaps another source of inspiration stems from a sign that hangs lazily in the center of her studio proclaiming “Comparison Is the Thief of Joy.” When questioned about it, Reece admits that she keeps this mantra in her back pocket as a constant reminder to always do her own work in her own way, without the influence of others.
