Herb Your Enthusiasm Harvest to Home Is Here to Revamp Your Healthy Lifestyle
editor's note Goodbye, 2019. For many, you were a year of trials and tribulations, of tremendous highs and lows. You were tumultuous to say the least, but don’t worry— we don’t blame you. There must be a lot of pressure being the last representation of your decade. But, as they say, hindsight is 20/20. Much like any new year, 2020 ushers in a feeling of beginning, of hitting the proverbial reset button. But the start of this new decade feels even more refreshing—like the shocking but welcome chill of jumping in the pool after soaking in a hot tub. This month, LOCALE is kicking off the Roaring ‘20s in a big way. Not only do we have some amazing new looks in this issue—most notably our huge A-Z Foodie Guide, encompassing all things tasty in Orange County (pg. 65)—but we also have incredible faces and places gracing our pages. Among them is Douglas Davidson from The Brown Buffalo (pg. 154), Mike Saraylian from Harvest to Home (pg. 148) and Carol
Grandy from Instant Jungle (pg.158). Although they all do very different things and share their very different stories, what unites them is a passion to serve others while making the world a more sustainable, more wholesome and more beautiful place. Finally, I was lucky enough to meet with our cover star, Brenda Song, who is every bit as lovely in spirit as she is on-screen. I truly hope you find her words as memorable and impactful as I do. Whether you’re sitting in a coffee shop, seeking solace in your favorite chair at home or taking us with you in your carry-on during your next big adventure, I’d like to make a toast to the LOCALE team, to 2019, to 2020 and, of course, to you. So raise your reusable coffee tumblers, your end-of-the-day wine glasses and your travel-sized sodas, and cheers to a year well-spent and to a year full of surprises and possibilities. While Production Manager Lauren Lewellen walked the restaurant with photographer Travis McCoy and his assistant, Joe Elgar, I set up at a cozy, well-lit dining room table with makeup artist Lexi Kleyla. Shortly after Kleyla laid out her brushes and palettes, Song arrived—megawatt smile and firm handshake in tow.

Even though she came in bare-faced with “day-old hair,” she was still radiant. Kleyla, however, was ready to enhance Song’s natural beauty into coverworthy glam. “For Brenda’s fabulous look, we wanted to create something sophisticated and fun to showcase her personality,” Kleyla said. “We had so much fun creating these looks!” As Song got ready for her close-up, Herringbone and McCoy got ready for her. While McCoy and Elgar tested their equipment, Herringbone’s team created a table’s worth of food and drinks that looked as beautiful as they tasted. By the time I had completed my interview with Song (and took a second to chat about what we thought of “The Great British Bake Off” finale), Kleyla had finished her glam, and it was time to get into wardrobe. Naturally, everything Song slipped into looked amazing on her, and with wardrobe stylist Melissa Souza’s selections, there wasn’t a bad choice in the bunch. “We were going for a very chic, luxe, high-end look,” Souza said. “She kind of has this rock ‘n’ roll vibe to her!” Throughout the shoot, Song was open to everything, from trying on different looks to posing with different foods— “Just try everything!” she said. “You never know what’s going to look good!” After shooting throughout the restaurant in different jewel-tone outfits and sampling goodies from the menu, Song had nailed her photoshoot—ending it in the best way she knew how: “That’s a wrap!”

Ò The last beer I had was Nerf Herder from Pizza Port, an English mild ale. This beer is light, but it has some darker, toasted chocolatey flavors. I think the best thing about beer is that there is a perfect style for every food pairing. There isn’t just one food that is best served with beer; however, there’s a specific beer or beer style that can elevate any food dish.

You could try to put Brenda Song into a box. You could see her for her Asian American heritage. You could see her as the ditzy hotel heiress from a beloved Disney sitcom. You could typecast her, take her for face value and keep her in the boxes of roles she’s played before. You could do all that—but you’d be wrong.
In truth, underestimating Brenda Song is probably one of the biggest mistakes you could possibly make. She’s blessed with a magnetic personality, a sharp intellect and an effortless beauty that no one can deny, but, on top of all that, she has a willpower and work ethic that have taken her (and her career) to new heights.

“I’ve never not remembered a time when I didn’t want to be performing,” she says. “I started in this industry very, very early. I was 3—almost 4 [years old]—in the Arden Fair Mall in Sacramento, and in the middle of the mall, they were doing this model search.” A talent scout watched Song mimicking their catwalk and approached her mother, giving her the “whole spiel.” Song’s mother, unimpressed by the presentation, finished up at the mall and took the soon-to-be starlet home. “My parents had me very young,” Song explains, “so they were very, very young and very, very poor. My grandparents, at the time, thought that to get on TV, you had to somehow get into the TV.” But even from a young age, Song was the decider of her own fate. “A few weeks later, I was really sick, and all I could talk about was this acting school, and I wouldn’t take my Robitussin. I know I was only 3 or 4, but I was talking, and I wouldn’t shut up,” Song says. Struggling to get her chatty (if not persistent) granddaughter to take her medicine, Song’s grandma struck a deal with her: “‘If you take this medicine, I will take you to this acting school.’” “So my grandma took everything out of her savings, which was $527, and took me to this acting school—which, obviously, wasn’t legit,” she recalls. “But through them, I met a real agent.” From there, Song kept pushing for her career. She began with print work right away, then around her sixth birthday, her family found another agent and moved to LA; shortly after, Song booked her first commercial. “Even after I booked my first series, my mom used to joke, ‘We have to go back when you stop working!’” notes Song. “It didn’t even become a career until I was 16,” she says. That year, her mom, a four-time breast cancer survivor, was diagnosed for the first time, Song had just booked “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” and she had just gotten accepted into college. “I loved school—I was an overachiever, and my dad was a second-grade teacher—and my dad said, ‘Hey,
if you want to do this, this has to become your career.’” Up until that point, performing was an “after-school activity” or a reward, but her father’s advice was to either go to college and figure out what she wanted to do, or to go all-in with performing. “At 16, I made the career choice,” Song explains. “I just never thought about doing anything else.” Although we know the story of her aspiring career has a happy ending, it was not without its hurdles. “I had to learn rejection at a really young age,” she says. “[It came from] auditioning [as a kid] and knowing that people weren’t even looking up because I wasn’t blonde-haired, blue-eyed— because I didn’t fit the image.” “Of course there were speed bumps,” she says. “Going into auditions, I knew I couldn’t play Harrison Ford’s daughter; it was very limited.” But with her pragmatic, after-school approach to performing and her parents’ support, Song stayed motivated. “My mom would always say that there was only one me, and if they’re not looking for me, it’s okay. There are more than enough opportunities out there, and I can’t change who I am, and do I want to?” she explains. To this day, that mentality gets Song through the rejections and tears, as well as the moments when she doubts her choices. Even recently, she found herself at a crossroads in her career, where she was questioning what was next and where exactly she fit in. She had played a plethora of roles through Disney, including the iconic London Tipton in “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” and Wendy Wu in Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, as well as various TV shows and movies. Song saw Disney’s “color-blind casting” as a gift. When she originally booked “Suite Life,” she was actually going in to play Maddie, a smart, sweet hotel employee. Ashley Tisdale, Song’s blonde peer, was going in for London, the hotel heiress—but the producers decided to switch their roles. According to Song, “They truly were just casting for who was right for the part.” And while London’s character goes against the way Asian Americans are typically portrayed on-screen, she fell into other boxes when it came to casting. “When I was on ‘Suite Life,’ all the roles I kept getting offered were these ditzy roles,” she explains. “And then when Wendy Wu came about, people would ask, ‘Why would you jump into the stereotype of Asians doing martial arts?’”

But Song didn’t see it that way. Aside from having a second-degree black belt, Song wanted to play the part because of how the main character, Wendy, struggles with how her heritage differs from American culture. “I was walking out of one stereotype and into another—and that’s always the case—I think everyone is stereotyped in some way,” she says. “But it’s about letting those go and doing projects you’re passionate about, regardless of what everyone else thinks about it.”

So when she found out that bestselling novel “Crazy Rich Asians” was being made into a film, she was eager to audition to be part of the cast—only to find that she wouldn’t be able to audition for any of the roles. “They thought I wasn’t right for it,” she explains. “I was like, ‘The lead character is in her mid-to-late-20s, an Asian American, struggling—how am I not right for it?’ And they were very honest and said that my image was, basically, too whitewashed.” For anyone who’s seen Crazy Rich Asians, it’s clear that one of the primary achievements of the film is how it opened up more Asian American representation in the industry. For too long, the only roles for Asian American and Pacific Islanders tended to be smaller parts that played to certain tropes. Roles like the alluring but deadly Dragon Lady, the wise martial arts master, the meek, quiet nerd and the foreigner speaking in almostunrecognizable broken English are not only offensive and limiting, but they’re also stale and uninteresting. “Some actors don’t fit into those roles—I don’t fit into a lot of those roles,” Song explains. “Even though I do martial arts, I have a hard time playing an assassin or a ninja! That’s just not who I am...and for a while that was the only part in mainstream movies that I could audition for.” Fortunately, there is a movement for AAPI representation in the industry, and it’s making headway—especially thanks to popular movies like Crazy Rich Asians, Always Be My Maybe and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Needless to say, after years of being overlooked for her race, Song was blindsided by the sentiment shared by Crazy Rich Asians’ casting department. “I felt like I was being punished for having worked in this industry for so long,” she says. “I didn’t understand, and it really hurt me. I was very confused.” “I don’t ever expect anyone to hand me work—I just want my day in court,” Song shares. “I have auditioned for so many things that weren’t right for me. A lot of the roles that I booked were not written for a minority—I’ve booked roles that were written for boys—but for something that I thought was so right for me, and I couldn’t even go read for it… It really discouraged me. I thought, ‘If I can’t go read for this, then what am I doing?’” Despite her work to break out of being cast or not cast based on her minority status, she felt that she had broken through
one box, only to have been put into a different one. “I felt like I was being judged on my past work, and I fought so hard to get away from that already,” she explains. Then, for the first time in 26 years, Song took time off. “I was in such a weird place. It was the first time in a long time I had felt discouraged,” she admits. But there’s nothing a little travel, self-reflection and new outlook can’t fix. “I came back with this mentality of, ‘I am who I am.’ I am so grateful for every yes and, also, for every no because it made me who I am—not just the actor that I am, but the person that I am.” Two weeks after returning to work, she had booked the lead role (Jennifer) in Netflix thriller Secret Obsession, and shortly after that, she booked Madison in Hulu’s “Dollface;” a role which she says perfectly represents where she is in her life and the type of actor she wants to be. “It’s so much fun,” Song gushes. “[Madison] is such a straight-laced, has blinders on, never stops talking, very type A personality that I’ve never gotten to play.” Not only does she feel a deep connection to her role, but she also loves the storyline and creation process behind “Dollface.” The story is about a group of women in their mid-to late-20s that is (refreshingly) written by an actual group of women in their mid-to late-20s. “They’re writing about their lives—this is not people writing about what they think is happening out there—this is people writing about what they do every day.” From defying the monolith with London and embracing the struggle of cultural identity with Wendy to playing an emotionally-charged Jennifer and a dry-witted Madison, Song has undoubtedly proven that she goes beyond typecasting— by race or by genre. “I’ve been very fortunate with my roles,” she notes. “It hasn’t been about my nationality or my ethnicity, and I really appreciate that because I definitely believe that both sides of the story need to be told: the story of the struggle of being Asian American [and] roles about just being a girl in LA...not defined by our culture.” Song is looking forward to seeing the industry transform into a more diverse, more inclusive space—not just for Asian Americans, but for all minorities as well. “My biggest thing is for the next generation to have something I never had, which was seeing yourself on TV at a young age, knowing that anything is possible,” she says. It’s important to her that kids feel that they are “represented in some way, shape or form,” and that they have opportunities and hope. “It’s okay to be down and to be confused about what you want, but at the end of the day, you have to be honest with yourself and know that you can’t change other peoples’ opinions of you. And it’s not up to you!” she explains. “I’m really proud of my resume, of the actor I am and the person that I am—and I know I have a lot of work to do on both aspects, but I’m proud of the woman I am. I worked really hard to be her.”

In a town where people love wearing flip-flops, five guys had an idea to revolutionize an overlooked everyday accessory. In 2009, socks were an underappreciated apparel category. Aaron Hennings—along with Jeff Kearl, Ryan Kingman, John Wilson and Taylor Shupe—saw an opportunity to inject personality into a product that would allow people to show self-expression. One Wheel? No Problem • Each team member has talents, but not all of them can do circus tricks. Hennings continues to impress his staff with his unicycle skills!
“Socks were the last piece of apparel on the human body that didn’t have a branded category leader,” Hennings says, “so we figured it was time to claim it.” The idea to create Stance was rooted in the belief that an ignored product category could be disrupted and brought to life with a heavy dose of creativity. “We knew that great brands become category leaders by disrupting markets that have been neglected, asleep and ripe for innovation,” says Hennings. Hennings and his partners have deep roots in the surfand-sport apparel industry.
Prior to diving into the sock and underwear industry, he served as Art Director at Billabong for nine years. When deciding on a name for the business, the men focused on the connection to feet. “Stance has a double meaning for us, referencing both the physical positioning of the legs and feet during activities like skateboarding and basketball, as well as being an intellectual or emotional
shoppe attitude,” shares Hennings. The deeper meaning of Stance shines through at the company headquarters in San Clemente. There is space for employees to play and physically express themselves, whether it be on the skate ramp or the volleyball court. There are also more traditional artistic expressions throughout the space, such as murals, paintings and photographs. But the most unexpected feature at Stance headquarters? It would have to be “a custom-built Harley Davidson ’58 Panhead motorcycle parked in our front reception area...leaking oil,” says Hennings. The mantra of Stance is to embrace “the uncommon thread.” Within the first five years of business, they’ve helped turn socks into one of the most popular accessories worldwide. igniting global creativity. “We wanted to build a company that was a reflection of our personalities and create a platform for the things we loved,” shares Hennings. “Stance was born as partbusiness opportunity, part-fashion movement and part-entrepreneurial undertaking.” In 2015, Stance laid new ground by becoming the first official sock of the NBA. “We wanted to establish Stance in the world of performance socks by showcasing our products on some of the most demanding athletes in the world,” explains Hennings. “Basketball has a connection to both on-court performance and sneaker culture. The NBA was interested in our ability to provide a product to both markets.” Stance continues to provide the league’s 30 teams with branded designs, which are available for fans through retail outlets.
The mantra of Stance is to embrace “the uncommon thread.” “We are working with Chicago-based graphic design artist Cody Hudson as part of our ‘Untitled’ collection,” Hennings shares. Donovan Mitchell, a Utah Jazz player who is the latest Stance brand ambassador, is working with the company on limited edition socks that feature his favorite emoji and his own personal Spida logo. After all the success, Stance continues to be wellgrounded. “The greatest rewards have been the ability to bring creative ideas to fruition as well as build a brand and working environment that provides

Meryl Kern is an entrepreneur, a wife, mother, grandmother and a breast cancer survivor. So, yeah, she’s pretty badass. After beating a stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis in 2015, Kern found herself at a deficit—she was cancer-free but wasn’t sure what would come next. She knew life as a patient but did not know how to navigate life as a survivor. So, she did what she does best. She found her purpose. She channeled her energy into a new business endeavor; one that would help others in a way that she, herself, needed help. Kern launched Liftique with the goal of providing a nurturing environment for women of all shapes, sizes and ages. Liftique is more than just another spot to get ‘pretty,’ or to try to look 20 years younger; it’s a culture of caring individuals aiming to help women get their mojo back and to look and live their best at the age they are.

“It’s important to me to help other women and to be able to offer non-surgical alternatives that will help women look, live and feel their best,” Kern explains. When Kern looked into the mirror after she finished her cancer treatment, she didn’t recognize the person staring back at her. She longed to find a non-surgical solution to make her look more like, well, herself. When she founded Liftique, she made a concerted effort to adopt innovative, non-invasive technologies with minimal downtime and, most of all, naturallooking results. “I’m trying to allow women to look good at the age that they are at; it’s not about looking differently or 30 years younger,” Kern says. “It’s about looking good for being 60, for being 50, for being 40.” Kern is a creator who cares, a pioneer with principles. She is always looking for the newest technology, so she can offer her customers the best of the best. “We’re always going to use the latest and greatest,” says Kern. Currently, Liftique’s menu of treatment options includes everything from radio-frequency technologies to fractional CO2 lasers, which are all customized and tailored towards the client. That’s what she calls the Meryl Method: knowing that a onesize-fits-all approach would never provide the quality of results that she demands. And with Liftique Blush, the branch of Liftique dedicated to pelvic floor health and vaginal health, Kern touts a “treat to complete” promise—a pledge many businesses shy away from. “Whatever you want to do, we’re right beside you, and we’re here to help and guide you,” Kern reassures.
With a prior career in advertising and marketing, Kern could sell ketchup to a woman wearing white gloves, but it’s her dedication to her clients that really sets her apart. “If I can talk to one woman and have my words resonate and help, my day is complete. I love being around all of these great women who walk through our door. Every woman has a story to tell… It’s given me purpose.” Kern has sparked a sensitive dialogue about life after cancer and has been the catalyst for countless conversations surrounding stigma and sex. “Life is different after cancer,” she admits, but it has given her “purpose and perspective.” After her firsthand experiences, Kern has learned that perceived weakness is actually a huge advantage. “I am not a weak person. I have faced adversity and come out the other side. Yes, I am emotional at times, but that doesn’t affect my ability to get a job done.” In fact, it’s her emotional attunement that has allowed her to make such deep connections with her clientele. Kern knows how to get below the surface, and we’re not just talking treatment-wise. She is helping people look better, function better and, in turn, feel better. As for what is next for this business-owning bootstrapper? Well, the sky’s the limit. She hopes to open more Liftique locations and continue to be a resource for women who are looking to become their best selves. If you do things Meryl-y, life will be but a dream.

“A lot of athletes want to continue to be able to do their activities, and as we age, we want to continue to remain athletic. Regenerative medicine is the best fit for patients of that mindset,” says Dr. Sonny Rubin of Newport Regenerative Medicine. A double-board certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain management specialist, Dr. Rubin has been personally practicing for 20 years. Dr. Rubin leads a team of regenerative medicine specialists dedicated to lessening chronic pain and treating injuries through therapies that allow the body to heal itself naturally. Throughout his own life, he’s been a devoted tennis player, swimmer and runner. Dr. Rubin has suffered from sports-related injuries himself, so he understands how it can be a harrowing experience.
His experience working in operating rooms during surgeries has also helped lead him to his current practice. “I started treating patients at the trauma center at USC and UCLA. I was dealing with catastrophic injuries; I would put patients to sleep for knee replacements, shoulder surgery, [and] knee surgery,” Dr. Rubin says. “[Regenerative medicine] was a natural evolution of my practice… being a naturalist at heart myself and wanting to offer patients an alternative to narcotic pills, steroids or surgery. I wanted to give back to my patients exactly what I would want for myself and for my own family members.” Steroid injections can reduce inflammation and help the affected tissue but cannot offer complete healing to the injury. Instead, Dr. Rubin takes a non-invasive approach toward pain management. An example of the practice’s offerings is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, which is a non-surgical injection of the patient’s own blood, harvested and separated in a centrifuge. PRP therapy can minimize pain and promote fast healing of the affected area. Newport Regenerative also implements the evolving medicine of stem cell therapy and prolotherapy. We’re approaching injuries or ongoing pain from a non-surgical, non-narcotic approach. [An] anti-inflammatory, naturalist, regenerative approach,” Dr. Rubin says. Since regenerative medicine is a fairly new and investigative form of therapy, Dr. Rubin finds many patients dealing with pain and injuries who are not aware of its science. While he informs it’s no quick-fix, his practice offers a healthy alternative to masking pain. Off the 73 freeway, a gray building juts from the ground, surrounded by what
appears to be an overgrowth of plants. On closer inspection, succulents adorn the building and surround a sun-faded green sign, which reads: “Organic
Vegetable Gardens—Green Walls—
Succulent Art,” and just below, “Harvest to Home.” This is the headquarters for Mike Saraylian’s ever-expanding business, which services the Orange County
region in a variety of gardening practices and plant art. Starting from humble
beginnings 10 years ago, Saraylian has
seen the art of self-gardening progress from being perceived as a sort of
hippy practice, to one that is becoming
ingrained in our culture. Harvest to Home has helped lead the march for this homegrown lifestyle.
Much like a seed, his hobby budded into a business.
It all began shortly after the 2008 recession. Saraylian previously held a job in the marble and granite industry, but with the economic crash, he felt it was time for something new. Though he had no previous experience with gardening (“I hadn’t even planted a plant before,” he jokes), Saraylian saw the act as something potentially beneficial for him. “I quit my job, having no idea what I was doing, but I was geared more towards healthy living,” Saraylian says.

Saraylian began his own garden on the rooftop of his Newport Beach home. As he tended to the garden and watched his seeds grow, he recognized the power of this new hobby. “It’s interesting and therapeutic to see the fruits of your labor grow.” Eventually, he had over 3,000 plants—all on his rooftop. “I’m pretty sure the neighbors thought I was out of my mind...or growing pot,” he jokes. Much like a seed, his hobby budded into a business. While Saraylian’s rooftop served as the greenery, his garage became a woodshop and the living room turned into an office. Soon, he was developing a clientele who wanted a garden on their property as well. 150 LOCALE MAGAZINE
HOW DO YOU PICK? Ò Harvest to Home carries a huge variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs. While at the typical supermarket, a consumer can only find two different types of cucumbers. At Harvest to Home, one can find over ten different varieties!

Ò Harvest to Home recently installed a 20-foot wide succulent mural in a Venice home. The mural looks as though it’s a painting, with wide swirls that resemble brushstrokes.

Harvest to Home developed the goal to “impact people’s lives positively through their diet.” The company now services well over 100 residential homes and several businesses, and it continues to grow. In fact, since the opening of their showroom in Costa Mesa three years ago, the company has seen an upward growth of 60%. More people are craving the greater nutritional value gained from having their own garden and the knowledge of knowing where their food came from.

The company currently has around 10 employees who maintain the gardens of their clientele weekly. They install garden beds, plant fruit trees in old wine barrels and set up teepeelike structures that plants, such as peas, can cling onto and grow. At their Costa Mesa headquarters, a garden is on display, which acts as a window to the garden a potential client can have. On the wall hangs a succulent mural in various hues of purple, blue and orange. In the corner, a wine barrel grows with thyme, and a fledgling spearmint pops from behind. Passionfruit grows above on an overhead trellis, while various herbs nestle at the foot. Wooden beds of beets, onion and carrots line a dirt pathway, and a stilted bed of berries lays at its end.
An automated owl, which scares off the pests, keeps watch over it all. Though Saraylian admits that they are a luxury service, the company is known for offering free gardening classes and featuring a robust website with information about all of their fruits, vegetables and herbs. “Everyone should be growing something because it’s just such a beautiful lesson,” he says, thanks to the profound impact his own garden has had on him. Among his favorite herbs are lemongrass, lemon thyme, and lemon verbena, which he uses to brew tea. “You’re putting a part of the garden in your body,” he says. Recently, Saraylian and his team revamped a garden found at Top of the World Elementary, Saraylian’s childhood school in Laguna Beach, in an effort to give back to the community. When he attended school there as a child, there was a tiny garden in the back, which no one knew existed. Now, there’s “one of the most beautiful gardens” that Saraylian has ever seen at a school. Since its installation, the school has constructed a curriculum around the garden. “This is becoming the norm,” says Saraylian. “It’s very fulfilling, and you can see that’s where the future is going.”

GAXIOLA • PHOTOGRAPHED BY: ED VISIONS Douglas Davidson, founder of the Costa Mesa-based design firm known as The Brown Buffalo, is incorporating his extensive understanding of the apparel industry into the designs of his innovative backpacks and travel goods. While discussing the impressive portfolio of brands he’s worked with throughout his career, Davidson dives into what first sparked his interest in the business. While living in Whittier as a teenager Shawn Stussy gave him a pair of shorts. “Looking back, that pair of shorts was such a pivotal moment in life,” Davidson notes. He quickly fell in love with the shorts, but didn’t have the financial means to continue buying this brand-name item. He explains, “I learned how to take the shorts apart and study the patterns. I would [then] go to discount stores and buy all the oversized pants I could find.” What started as a simple mission to try and recreate a favorite pair of shorts rapidly turned into a driving passion in Davidson’s life.
“Eventually, I got my first real job at a company called No Fear in San Diego,” he says. After one of the owners noticed Davidson casually sketching during his lunch break, he was presented the opportunity to design a name tag for the owners. Ultimately, after moving on to designing racing gloves and driving shoes for No Fear, he was asked to design his first bag. Today, Davidson is continually inspired by the knowledge he’s obtained during his travels, while also embracing artists like Spanish Surrealist painter Salvador Dali and Southern California’s popular Chicano street style. Like Dali’s masterpieces, each piece designed and manufactured by The Brown Buffalo team exemplifies immaculate attention to detail, whether it be the amazing compact exterior or the seemingly endless interior features. Davidson’s former boss once said, “If you can become great at one thing, you can become great at other things.” Now, all these years later, Davidson has proved that becoming great at one thing can truly yield success in many other areas of life.

Teenage Art Fanatic • While still in high school, Davidson enrolled in one of the ArtCenter College of Design’s Saturday courses. He began sitting in on various classes and was fascinated with the array of talented illustrators on campus.

If this setting sounds even slightly familiar, then it’s time to brighten up your workspace. Numerous scientific studies show there is a direct link between decreased employee stress levels in relation to displaying greenery around the office. In fact, when plants are present, individuals typically feel more at ease, resulting in increased productivity and motivation. So, why not include greenery in your office?

Sure, not all of us are gifted with green thumbs, but luckily, the creative team at Santa Ana’s Instant Jungle International is. Specializing in an array of plant types, including tropical foliage, traditional plants and even silk creations, Instant Jungle is a full-service wholesale and retail nursery that provides both interior and exterior designs, plant installation and plant maintenance. Interior Sales Representative Carol Grandy offers the 411 on the services this local exotic plant kingdom provides, along with advice on where to begin when developing a personal green haven. For those who may be more horticulturally challenged than others, it would be wise to opt for a plant that requires less maintenance. Grandy explains, “There are some plants that don’t require water on a weekly basis; however, they should be dusted, checked for pests and have any yellow or brown leaves removed.” She notes that dracaenas and pothos are easy to keep alive as they are very adaptable to interior conditions. Another important factor to take into consideration is the amount of natural light available in the intended space. Many indoor plants do not require an abundance of natural light, but some is certainly needed. On that note, some plants should be avoided entirely. “Anything that is meant to grow outside in full sun will not survive inside. You cannot acclimate an olive or citrus tree to interior conditions no matter how much your decorator wants you to!” says Grandy. Aside from aesthetic appeal, Grandy explains that these plush assortments also bring added benefits to individuals— mentally and physically! “There was a study by the University of Queensland in 2014 that found plants increase productivity [at] work by 15%,” Grandy notes. The study concluded that by incorporating plants in the workspace, employers were showing their employees that they cared about their welfare. “Plants create a more comfortable and enjoyable workspace,” Grandy says. 160 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Step 1:
• It’s important to first get a feel for the space you are working with. Style, layout and mood all play a role in creating the desired ambiance. “I met with our clients to tour their facility and get a read on what they envisioned in their building,” Grandy explains. “I assessed the light levels, measured the spaces in each location, made notes and took pictures.” She recommends to “select something that fits the space and will survive with the amount of lighting available.”
Step 2:
• Once the overall look and feel has been determined, brainstorm ideas of the best plant options that will work in the space. “I was able to make several suggestions to them on the spot and [the clients] were very receptive,” Grandy says.
Step 4:
• Confirm which options are available and begin pairing your plants with complimenting accents. Grady says, “I sent our client images of several plant wall designs, so they could choose the plant pallet that they liked best [and] that would survive on their walls.”
Step 5:
• Finalize, install and maintain! “Plant maintenance is very important!” Grady explains that regular weekly maintenance is best, so try and make it part of your weekly routine. “Check and maintain the plant first thing Monday morning when you arrive…or make it the last thing you do on Friday before you leave.”
Step 3:
• Begin mapping out the plant of attack. “I went back to the office and selected which wall systems would work best in each location, along with containers and the right plane for each space.”
