A NOTE FROM OUR

PUBLISHER This is the eighth time I have written my publisher's notes for our July issue. I had to pause after writing that for quite some time. How did 10 percent of my life go by in a flash? When I wrote this the first time, I had just left a perfectly good job, hired my first employee, Ashley Smith, and rented 400 square feet above Kéan Coffee. All while spending every waking hour of the previous 90 days selling advertisements, setting up delivery locations, taking pictures and preparing for our first launch party. I was exhilarated and exhausted. I was afraid and full of hope—I was naive. Upon reflection, I don't believe that any other cocktail of emotional and physical state would have propelled me through the first year. My first publisher’s notes were certainly influenced by my then nine year old son’s affection for the "Dork Diaries" as I described my perfect day. (See photo.) Looking back at what I thought was cool eight years ago is probably the same feeling you get when you see yourself in bedazzled True Religion jeans in (hopefully) an old photo. I can kind of remember why I thought those things were cool, but it was long before so many more cool things were available. So much has changed in Orange County since that first edition, beginning with my perception. My perfect day now looks very different. Our breakfast and brunch game has been elevated, and now I choose Habana over Cappy's. I still go to Al Cap's on the peninsula, but there are at least 10 new coffee joints vying for the caffeine crown. Nightlife has switched from Scott's (now Water Grill), Rudy's and The Crow Bar to Mesa and SOCIAL. I want to go paddle boarding, but I still don't have a board and not sure how much I would go if I did. I still love TK Burger, in fact, I had one this week, but I am now more likely to eat a veggie burger or salad, which if the rumors are true, I will be able to get my combo salad from Ho Sum Bistro again very soon. That guy back then was overworked and stressed out at his previous job and just wanted a day to have fun. His perfect day was a day off.

My perfect day now includes: Ò Waking up early and sending emails. Ò A walk with the F-word (Fiancé). Ò Waking up Makena, taking her to singing lessons and tucking her into bed. Ò Chaperoning sleepovers of three or four girls and making coconut pancakes. Ò Searching for the perfect Instagram picture. Ò Motivating my sales team with longwinded speeches. Ò Flipping through a new issue our talented Art Director, Reilly, has finished. Ò Listening to editorial pitches. Ò Talking with my son about college. Ò Party planning like J-Lo in the Wedding Planner. Ò Trying out a new restaurant and breaking my habits. Ò Listening to new music—the newer, the better. Ò Planning vacations. Ò Snuggling on the couch with my family. Today is so much different, but it is still perfect. How did we get to eight years? Day by day. P.S. Speaking of change, my partner and COO, Ashley Smith, who married my longtime friend and Senior Market Manager, Mike Smith, just had their first baby. We would like to welcome Scout Leo Smith, born June 7, 2017 at seven pounds, five ounces and 19 and a half inches to the LOCALE family.

MAKING THE ISSUE Walking into the pristine, white castle-like mansion in the Hollywood Hills on a hot April day, I have to admit, I was a little nervous. I was about to meet Laila Ali—like the Laila Ali. I grew up with my dad having a framed “Impossible is Nothing” poster of her father, the late Muhammad “The Greatest” Ali iconically standing over Sonny Liston. I was raised on the phrase “impossible is nothing” and so was Laila—crazy. When she humbly introduced herself, I fought the urge to bang on the kitchen countertop like a drumb and yell, “The champ is here!” The home where we photographed was absolutely stunning. Provided by THE AGENCY and SPACE, the five bedrooms, sparkling pool and the clear views of the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory Park were so quintessential LA. After a full day of shooting, I was ready to move in. When I was done touring and vigorously posting on my Instagram story with stylist Melissa Souza, it was time to pick Laila’s looks. Souza said she first caught up with our inspirational cover star to talk wardrobe while Laila was on a field trip with her kids: “[That is] something I applaud her for since she’s in the spotlight as a celebrity.” Souza continued to say that even though Laila is in the spotlight, she is very relatable. “Working with her on set, it was easy to see why she’s such a role model;

she has amazing drive and passion. The pieces chosen were selected to meld Laila’s active lifestyle with her strong, sexy, girlboss vibe.” Photographer Jeff Farsai said this wasn’t just any other shoot. “I was about to meet and photograph a legendary female athlete, and businesswoman,” Farsai thought while preparing for the day. “Laila Ali showed up like a boss and straight took care of business with style and confidence,” Farsai continued. “Her team was rad, her looks were fire and the location was dope! She is hilarious and so fun to work with.” Laila’s all-star team, which included celebrity makeup artist Autumn Ingrid Moultrie and powerhouse hair stylist Robbi Rogers, executed flawlessly and had fun while doing it; when I put on Spotify’s ‘90s R&B Throwback playlist on all-around sound throughout the house, dance moves were busted and song lyrics were sung with a reminiscent tone. Growing up as a female athlete, you yearn for idols to look up to, to push you, to inspire you. Laila was that for me then, and now; I may be a former basketball player, but as a woman with a champion-like spirit, Laila Ali is still all those things for me and more. I hope you enjoy her story and it moves you to continue to fight for the things (and people) that are important to you.

MONDAY ¢ Set the tone for the week! One of my busier days. Mondays include working out, teaching two classes, meetings, fixing bikes, and if I can squeeze it in, I try to get some time with my baby boy, Kingston! The menu changes daily, so you never know what to expect! I recommend dining with a friend that enjoys sharing plates. If avocado mash isn’t your thing, the cheese and charcuterie samplers never disappoint. www.sidedoorcdm.com SATURDAY ¢ I’m an early riser, even on the weekend. So, to start the weekend right I recommend a visit to Laguna Beach for second breakfast at Zinc Cafe & Market before walking through the Farmers Market. I can't leave without a bag of frozen prosciutto empanadas from Sergio's to keep the family fed during the week! www.zinccafe.com SUNDAY ¢ A mellow morning is in order, which calls for a visit to the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. I love the themes of education and preservation throughout the institute. Afterward, depending on the tides, my family visits the nearby Dana Point tide pools to see what creatures we can find. We take great care to respect the sea animals and use only gentle touch, if any at all. Usually, we have an easy time finding limpets, hermit crabs and sea anemones. www.ocean-institute.org

“MY OLDEST CLIENT IS 94—PILATES WORKS FOR EVERYONE.” —Darci Brawley

DARCI BRAWLEY OWNER OF PILATES ON PURPOSE

Q: What inspired you to open Pilates on Purpose and why did you choose that name? DB: The years that I spent in the physical therapy clinic provided invaluable experience while working with those with injuries and developing treatment plans. I saw very clearly that Pilates was a better solution almost every time. When I developed a considerable following, I realized that I had a gift! I felt it was my responsibility to share. Serving others with this knowledge and experience is my divine gift, passion and purpose. The philosophy of balancing the body from the inside out has only expanded. We live longer. To ensure quality and vitality of life, we must strengthen and maintain as well as manage stress. Mindful 56 LOCALE MAGAZINE

movement is what Joseph Pilates taught so long ago and it’s even more important now. Q: Can you explain what the Reformer is and how do you help newcomers get accustomed to it? DB: The design of the Reformer is genius—it can be assistive or resistive. There are about 900 exercises available on this one machine. Our Reformers are state-of-the-art Balanced Body Wood Reformers with towers. We recommend that our new clients have an initial private session. We evaluate the individual and their needs, then apply Pilates exercises accordingly. By the end of the session, the new client has a basic foundation on which to build. Q: How can Pilates help someone with physical issues or limitations? DB: It can fix back pain. This is my specialty. I effectively use Pilates-based movements coupled with other modalities to achieve lasting results for my clients. What is amazing about Pilates is that the platform is applicable for someone with limited movement due to injury all the way to someone that could perform in Cirque du Soleil. Be it golfers, surfers, volleyball players…they all see amazing improvements with Pilates. Even those with breathing difficulties due to pregnancy or in the process of rehabilitation, we provide modifications to facilitate their progress. My oldest client is 94! Pilates works for everyone. Q: Your philosophy is “Body, Mind and Soul.” Can you explain the meaning behind that?

DB: So, here’s a little Darci-ism for you: 'The Human Body: Divine Design. Crappy Use.' Let’s give ourselves a break! At Pilates on Purpose the soul can be nourished as the body is supported and positively challenged. I believe the greatest stealer of joy is the external comparison that we all do subconsciously. The most impactful part of the practice is transitioning to consciously focusing on and acknowledging a divine connection within. This leads to the best place on earth—a place of gratitude! Q: Why is Pilates beneficial for both men and women? DB: Men may not think that Pilates is for them, until they start. I have found men to be the most loyal, consistent clients once they begin. They seem surprised to discover that they can move pain-free, improving their focus and drive. The mental discipline that comes with Pilates and the power they feel makes them devoted clients. For women, many are looking to reclaim their physical health. They may want to get strong, but dislike the idea of 'bulking up' by lifting weights. Pilates gives you those long, lean lines, toned arms, tightens your ribcage and core. It’s a freeing feeling to have your clothes fit better and to feel good all the time. As Joseph Pilates said, 'the mind, when housed within a healthful body, possesses a glorious sense of power.' Let’s be healthy, strong, and take the world on!

Photographed By: Erik Isakson

Q: With all the ways there are to exercise, what first drew you to Pilates? Darci Brawley: Our body is our instrument through which we experience life. Being asthmatic as a child, I know the importance of breath control and awareness. Finding that Pilates made so much sense, I obtained my Pilates certification through Balanced Body, and then continued to refine my practice. To further my knowledge, I worked in a physical therapy clinic for the next seven years. I was exposed to many different kinds of bodies and movement patterns that needed different treatment options, not to mention the aging populous and the explosion of technology exasperating improper posture!

“DOWN THE ROAD, WE HOPE TO SEE BUILT-IN MONITORS AND VISUAL DISPLAYS THAT SHOW KEY PERSONAL METRICS (HEART RATE, BLOOD PRESSURE AND CALORIE LOSS) WHILE SITTING IN THE SAUNA.” —Ken Arsenian

LEE BRAUN & KEN ARSENIAN

OWNERS OF PERSPIRE SAUNA STUDIO

Q: How are infrared saunas different from steam and dry saunas, and what benefits do they offer? LB: Infrared safely warms your core temperature two to three degrees rather than steam or dry saunas that only warm the air around you. Infrared saunas are providing a far more penetrating detox than the surface level sweat you are getting at a traditional sauna. KA: Our saunas allow you to stay in for 40 minutes and recognize the core benefits of relaxation, detoxification and weight loss. Q: With technology continuing to improve, what advancements can we expect in the sauna industry?

LB: The next steps will add more feedback on each client's sauna session. Calorie watches, sweat/toxin analysis and heart rates are all things we aim to be able to track in the future. KA: We work very closely with our sauna manufacturer and are always trying to raise the bar when it comes to technology. Down the road, we hope to see built-in monitors and visual displays that show key personal metrics (heart rate, blood pressure and calorie loss) while sitting in the sauna. Q: What do you hear people say about the saunas at Perspire? LB: The best things we hear people say are how much the saunas have helped them with specific ailments or simply how nice of a break it is from the daily grind. My personal favorite compliment is when I am told our front desk team is so friendly! KA: We constantly hear great feedback from our customers. Some have used the detoxification component to help beat addiction, rid the body of toxins (such as chemotherapy) and others use our saunas to help achieve fitness goals, which is always rewarding to hear.

Photographed By: Nathan Whelan

Q: What drew you to the sauna business? Was it something you always wanted to do? Lee Braun: Ken and I jumped on board very early on after trying infrared saunas for the first time. After some first-hand experience at how great we felt afterwards, we knew people would gravitate towards the service. Ken Arsenian: I tried it once back in the day and was hooked; the way I felt afterwards was amazing! At that point, I knew we had something special that we needed to grow into a business for others to benefit from.

”‘AMERICA’S GOT TALENT’ WAS THE BEST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE.” —Sofie Dossi

SOFIE DOSSI

CONTORTIONIST, HAND BALANCER AND AERIALIST

dream of? Sofie Dossi: I was 12 years old and watching Cirque du Soleil videos on YouTube, seeing girls bending and twisting and thought, ‘Hey, I can do that!’ I’ve always been naturally flexible but never thought it was anything unique until then.

Q: How would you describe your experience on “America’s Got Talent”? SD: ‘America’s Got Talent’ was the best experience of my life. I decided to audition at the last minute so it was a crazy, amazing whirlwind from the start. I faced the challenge of creating new acts that had to dazzle each and every time. It pushed me beyond the boundaries of what I ever

thought I could do. To be challenged like that in front of millions of people was a feeling that I can’t put into words. I loved it all. The producers, crew, judges…everyone was absolutely the best.

Photographed By: Erik Isakson

Q: When did you first realize that you were able to do things with your body that most people can’t even

Q: What is the most challenging move that you like to do? SD: I love to do my back arch when I bend my legs, then cross them, then straighten them horizontally—all while spinning without stopping! Q: What are people's reactions when they see you perform for the first time? SD: People are shocked and totally not expecting to see me do what I do, especially because I’m so young. I usually get, ‘How did you ever discover you could do that?’ or ‘How is that even possible?’ They’re always even more surprised to hear that I’m self-taught.

“BE ADVENTUROUS AND TRY IT! IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, TRY IT AGAIN, WITH A DIFFERENT TEACHER AND/ OR DIFFERENT STYLE.” —Kori Strobl Photographed By: Randi Slusher

KORI STROBL, NICOLETTE DAVID & SHINA CHEN

OWNERS OF HB YOGA COLLECTIVE

Q: HB Yoga Collective offers many services including yoga. How did the idea come about for it to be “collective”? Kori Strobl: As yoga students and teachers, we have come to understand that yoga was never intended to be a complete ‘workout.’ While you can certainly get that lovely curve of muscle at your shoulder or slimmer legs in many of the classes we offer, our focus is on supporting our clients with their overall health and well-being. We created a diverse schedule in order to help meet the needs of our clients so they could have a complete experience with one membership. Q: What advice do you have for someone who has never taken yoga before? KS: Be adventurous and try it! If you don’t like it, try it again, with a different teacher and/or different style. The long-term benefits of yoga are only now beginning to be studied, documented and measured across many different demographics. Yoga is for everyone, although every style or teacher is not. There is a place to start for everyone and the benefits of yoga do not discriminate. While one of the many benefits of yoga is increased flexibility, it is not a prerequisite to be flexible to start yoga. Q: What inspired you to open HB Yoga Collective? KS: After the former studio closed its

doors, there was a distraught community of yoga students that felt lost and really disappointed that their beloved community was being dispersed. These members ran with it when I pondered out loud that maybe I would take over the space. They started writing checks to me personally before the corporation was formed or the business plan was written. These same members are the ambassadors for the studio, shouting its praises wherever they are and celebrating and welcoming every new face like a missing piece of our community. Volunteers from the community helped us renovate the studio and continue to be a key aspect of our studio and staffing. We might be the ‘owners’ but the studio is most definitely a collective effort created and sustained by and for the community. Q: What are the benefits of meditation and why should someone try it? KS: The benefits of meditation are numerous, but here are some of the scientifically measured benefits of a regular meditation practice: lessens worry and anxiety, increases optimism, relaxation and awareness, reduces blood pressure and many more. The list of benefits speaks for itself and certainly provides enough reasons why someone should try it.

“WHILE YOU CAN CERTAINLY GET THAT LOVELY CURVE OF MUSCLE AT YOUR SHOULDER OR SLIMMER LEGS IN MANY OF THE CLASSES WE OFFER, OUR FOCUS IS ON SUPPORTING OUR CLIENTS WITH THEIR OVERALL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING.” —Kori Strobl

“WITH WATERCOLOR I WAS REALLY DRAWN TO THE MOVEMENT AND MAGIC THAT HAPPENS WITH PIGMENT WHEN TWO WET AREAS OF PAINT TOUCH EACH OTHER.” —Jenna Rainey Photographed By: Andrea Domjan

JENNA RAINEY OWNER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF MON VOIR AND AUTHOR OF “EVERYDAY WATERCOLOR” Q: How did you first become interested in art? Jenna Rainey: With watercolor I was really drawn to the movement and magic that happens with pigment when two wet areas of paint touch each other. Watercolor has a mind of its own and it's so fun to watch. Q: What would you like people to know about your new book, “Everyday Watercolor”? JR: The book is going to be packed full of not only watercolor techniques and how-tos, but also color and foundational aspects of art in general. The book will start with all the basic techniques and color theory, then move into daily paintings that build on each other. Starting basic, then growing in complex forms and shapes. Mon Voir www.monvoir.com @monvoirco

Photoshoot Location: Irvine, CA

Q: How important is social media for your success? JR: Social media has played the biggest role in my success. I started posting my work on Instagram back in the day, and within six months of doing that I was able to quit my job at a financial planning office. Still to this day, I'd say about 70 percent of our clients find us through social media. Q: What are your favorite things to paint in watercolor and why? JR: Florals! I grew up in a house where my mom was obsessed with gardening and explaining to me all of the different types of roses in her garden, what those purple flowers were, etc. So I just know them well from growing up around them and becoming comfortable with their shapes. I also like to paint landscapes when I have extra time on my hands.

“FIND SOME FRIENDS AND TAKE TURNS SHOOTING EACH OTHER OR COLLABORATE ON CREATIVE CONCEPTS—THAT'S WHAT WILL KEEP YOU STOKED.” —Robbie Crawford Photographed By: Giuseppe DeMasi

ROBBIE CRAWFORD GOPRO ACTION CAM SPECIALIST

Q: What weather or ocean conditions make for the best photos? RC: Surface conditions and light are probably the most important. With good light and glassy surface conditions, even a one-foot wave can be beautiful. Then it kind of depends on whether you're shooting empty waves or an actual surfer. When shooting empty waves, a lot of times a smaller wave can actually tend to create a better image, as there tends to be less imperfections. When it comes to shooting a surfer, you want the wave Robbie Crawford www.robbiecrawford.com @robbiecrawford

to at least be big enough that the surfer can comfortably stand in the barrel and still have room. Q: How has being a professional bodyboarder given you an advantage in terms of photography? RC: The funny thing is that a lot of the best surf photographers in the world were bodyboarders. I think because bodyboards are best suited for heavier waves that barrel and you wear fins. So just take away the bodyboard and add a camera and you've got someone who's comfortable being in the barrel with fins on. All you have to do then is point the camera and push the button. Q: What tips do you have for aspiring action cam photographers? RC: Most importantly, have fun! Find some friends and take turns shooting each other or collaborate on creative concepts—that's what will keep you stoked. Don't worry too much about getting a bunch of followers or making money off your images; if you create great content then this will come naturally. Even if that never happens, as long as you're having fun with your friends and enjoy creating, then you're already winning. The people I've known that get wrapped up too much in followers or money tend to end up bitter and lose the love—and you never want to lose the love.

Photoshoot Location: The Wedge Newport Beach, CA 92661

Additional Camera Accessories Provided By: AquaTech Imaging Solutions, aquatech.net

Q: What inspired you to get into GoPro action photography? Robbie Crawford: My friend Russell Hoover (who used to shoot me when I was on the other side of the lens) talked me into buying a GoPro HD1. I started stand up surfing at The Wedge and he suggested that I should put one on the front of my surfboard and film myself getting barreled. After shooting a couple of clips, I realized my style was horrible so I threw it on a stick and started shooting my friends instead. That was really cool because my whole life, I grew up with all these weird photographers who didn't even ride waves coming to The Wedge and taking pictures of me and my friends and they'd never let us see any of the pictures. So I was like, ‘Perfect! I'll shoot the photos and hook my friends up.’

“WE ARE LIVING A KIDS DREAM RIGHT NOW, PLAYING PIRATES FOR HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE DAILY!” —Edward Bangasser Photographed By: Nathan Whelan

EDWARD BANGASSER SHOW MANAGER AT PIRATE’S DINNER ADVENTURE Q: How did you become a pirate and what responsibilities are involved with that title? Edward Bangasser: Over the years I have been involved with film, television and stage productions throughout America. Nine years ago, I was invited to an audition at Pirate’s Dinner Adventure, where I was asked to learn fight choreography, sing, give a ‘cold reading’ and demonstrate other skills that would be utilized in the show. From that first meeting, I have performed in more than 3,000 shows, learned seven different roles, acquired new skills and have been blessed to work with some of the finest people in the stunt industry. Q: The show features sword fighting and amazing stunts. How long did it take to learn everything for the show? EB: First off, we look for performers who may already have special skills, such as acrobatics or martial arts. If invited to join the cast, each performer is assigned a trainer who will meet with them for 12 hours in a four week period. They are taught the blocking of the show and all the fight choreography that pertains to Pirate’s Dinner Adventure 7600 Beach Blvd Buena Park, CA 90620 714.690.1497 www.piratesdinneradventure.com

their character. Once they are cleared by their trainer, the new hire must then walk the show manager through the entire show before they are given a part. They will perform for a live audience while the trainer watches and takes notes. If all goes well, they are officially a pirate! Q: What tips do you have for aspiring pirates? EB: Most people will come and watch our show and say ‘Hey, I would love to do what you guys do!’ My advice to people looking to join our crew—train! You need a very high level of physical fitness to be able to safely execute the stunts that we do on a nightly basis. Strength and endurance are the backbones of our show. You can't be afraid of heights, and you have to love what you do! We are living a kids dream right now, playing pirates for hundreds of people daily! Q: What is the most dangerous stunt? EB: The most dangerous is the two-man spinning ladder routine because you cannot make any mistakes or you will get severely injured. Come and watch Pirate’s Dinner Adventure and you can see for yourselves!

PALM SPRINGS Written By: Quintan Valles

No California road trip would be complete without a pass through the bright and beautiful city of Palm Springs. There’s just something about that diamond of the desert that pulls you in and makes you want to stay for a while to soak up the warm weather, rich culture and the spectacular sunbaked scenery. We have taken the liberty of mapping out the most exciting activities, the best bites and the sweetest places to stay in the city.

RIDE THE AERIAL TRAMWAY

The Indian Canyons hike is a beautiful example of natural landscape in the Greater Palm Springs area. Whether you are a nature enthusiast or simply need a break from the hustle and bustle of city life, it allows you to experience Native American culture and the breathtaking scenery of the desert landscape.

If you want to see Palm Springs, and I mean really see Palm Springs, then take a ride on the sky-bound Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. See the city and the surrounding natural landscape like never before as you and your pals ascend two-and-a-half miles in a rotating tramcar. So hop in and leave your cares, worries and fear of heights behind.

If you’re a dog lover with a penchant for the extreme, the Wolf Mountain Sanctuary is just the place for you. It is a nonprofit organization that seeks to preserve the wolf species and create a more complete understanding of these majestic creatures. Get your fill of furry friends that are kind of like your dog at home, if your dog was big, gray and could probably eat you.

FACTS ABOUT THE CITY The Santa Monica Pier was originally created for the disposing of sewage. Santa Monica is named Silicon Beach for the various tech companies located there. The original ferris wheel was auctioned off to a bidder in Oklahoma City.

California is a state of endless beauty, from scorching deserts and towering ancient trees to the Golden Gate Bridge and the Hollywood Sign; there is no limit to the beauty the state has to offer and there is no better place to road trip than on the end of Route 66 in Santa Monica. This city is where authentic tacos and Ethiopian food can be consumed on the same day, but still the best part may be the fact that you don’t have to leave California to embark on an incredible road trip! Laila “She Bee Stingin” Ali competed in her first world title fight on Aug. 17, 2002 against Suzette Taylor at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. Before the fight, the shaky camcorder footage zooms into Laila’s face: “The way I look now, is the same way I’m going to look after the fight,” she says confidently touching her flawless face. Her styled French braids pulled back in a braided ponytail were meant for resistance, maybe. Lauryn Hill and Tupac echo off the dressing room’s walls as Laila throws punches in the air quickly, shifting her feet side to side—uppercut, jab, jab, right, dodge.

“When I know I have done everything in my power to be ready for the moment, I am able to let go of any fear or doubt and have faith in knowing that all I have left to do is my best. I pretty much face every challenge with that same attitude.”—Laila Ali 88 LOCALE MAGAZINE

The fight begins and as the time ticks away, Laila is in full swing. The crowd started to roar, “Ali! Ali! Ali!” The chant matched the last name on her white, shiny shorts and it only added fuel to the fire; Laila started hammering body punches left, left, right, right. She TKO’s Taylor at 1:11 in the second round to earn the International Boxing Association (IBA) Middleweight belt and continues her undefeated record. At 19 years old, Laila flipped on a Mike Tyson fight, saw two women boxing on the undercard and fell in love with the sport, prompting her to follow in her late legendary father, Muhammad Ali’s footsteps. A “Psh, I can do that” attitude enticed her to get into the ring with some of the greats, but she left the ring as the greatest. Now, in 2017, Laila isn’t throwing punches for promos anymore; she’s fighting a different fight. “People are getting sick due to what they are eating, environmental toxins and poor lifestyle choices,” Laila says about fighting for causes that she’s passionate about, such as the health and wellness epidemic we are facing. “I aim to inform people about ways they can take control of their health and inspire them to start living a healthy lifestyle.” SPORTS BRA PROVIDED BY: Champion www.champion.com LEGGINGS AND JACKET PROVIDED BY: Lukka Lux www.lukkalux.com

For this fight, there’s no championship belt waiting for her

at the end of a knockout; there’s hope, inspiration, and, overall, a healthier generation. “It’s a priority for me to stay healthy,” Laila says. “I’ve been at my best when I was boxing, so I know what it takes to get there.” With that being said, she’s fully aware that her lifestyle has changed. With constant screen time on national TV shows like “The New Celebrity Apprentice,” a hubby and two kids, she doesn’t have the mounds of time that she used to strictly dedicate to training. Nowadays, she takes it as a challenge. “It’s fun to find new ways to stay fit,” Laila says. She sways between a three to four mile run to High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and spin classes; regardless, she says, she aims to find that healthy balance. “What I have learned over the years is that one way of eating or working out does not work for everyone. It's important to educate yourself and listen to your body so that you can figure out what makes you thrive personally,” she says.

Tune Into Laila

• Her newest endeavor is her health and wellness podcast, “Laila Ali Lifestyle,” where she has candid, straight-forward conversations. “I’m able to talk about what I want to talk about, who I want to talk to, [and] the way that I want to talk to them,” Laila says about using her podcast as a platform. Above anything else, it bares witness to healthy conversations about fitness, balancing the mom act, eating clean, mental health and everything in between.

“I learned a lot from watching my dad, watching how he treated people. Kids watch what we do and not just what we say.” —Laila Ali Another way that Laila thrives is cooking in the kitchen. A passion that sprouted at the age of nine has since grown into a true love for food. “My mom didn’t really cook a lot, but I loved to eat,” she jokes. “That’s what inspired me to get in the kitchen myself.” Spaghetti, eggs and pancake basics turned into her now craveable Creole-inspired dishes like gumbo and oven-fried chicken. She’s gone on to compete (and win) on the Food Network’s celebrity rendition of “Chopped,” which she notes as one of her biggest accomplishments, has been featured as a judge on shows like “Beat Bobby Flay” and “Chopped Junior,” and was the host of “Late Night Chef Fight.” So, for lack of better words, she knows her stuff.

WWMD?

• Who does she grab her inspiration from? “With my dad being Muhammad Ali, people used to ask me, ‘Who was your role model growing up?’ and I’d say, ‘My dad.’ I’ve always placed him on such a high pedestal,” Laila says. Now, when she’s in a situation that challenges her integrity, she ponders, “What would Michelle Obama do?” Other inspirational women include Oprah, Shonda Rhimes, Billie Jean King, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Dana Torres.

Mom Instincts

• She admits that being a mother is a huge responsibility; it’s a whole different feeling when you wake up in the morning. She also confesses that she’s losing sleep over the idea of when her son Curtis Jr. grows up, moves out and starts dating: “Oh my gosh, I am going to be the mom from hell. There won’t be a girl who is going to be good enough for my boy,” she says jokingly, imitating her worried self-talk voice. “He’s only eight [years old].”

We’ll get the opportunity to get a taste in early 2018 when Laila is set to release her cookbook “Food for Life” where she’ll put a healthy, nutritious twist on all of the dishes you love. “We can enjoy food and be healthy at the same time,” she says. During her boxing career, she had to figure out what it took to be the absolute best. She surrounded herself with a powerful team to help her get there, and that included a nutritionist. “He really taught me the value of eating food as fuel.” And kids need that fuel, too. Laila has had countless partnerships with organizations that teach this concept to children to try and fight childhood obesity, an epidemic that has more than tripled since the ‘70s in the US, according to the CDC. Her goal is to equip kids with the knowledge of the importance to not only know what goes into their bodies, but to establish a need to get outside and physically move their bodies as well. The Women’s Sports Foundation, which Laila once held the

presidential office of, exemplifies just that—girls empowering girls to go out there and continue to kick butt in sports and living a healthy lifestyle. “The work that The Women’s Sports Foundation is doing to advocate for female athletes has been instrumental in making sure female athletes have a voice,” Laila says noting that women’s athletics have come so far, but there’s still work to be done. “We must continue to uphold Title IX and make sure that female athletes get equal opportunities in collegiate and professional sports.” Sydney, Laila’s six-year-old daughter, started playing baseball this year, donning the only pigtails on the co-ed team. The importance of girls—all kids for that matter— playing sports is unmatched, Laila says, “I understand how beneficial participating in sports is. You learn skills such as discipline, accountability, self-confidence and more, which can be applied to other areas in life. Girls who participate in sports are also less likely to drop out of school and engage in harmful activities.” Laila, who went pro at the age of 21, and her husband Curtis Conway, who is a former NFL wide receiver, says that there is no pressure on their kids to be professional athletes, instead, they simply encourage their children to participate. Regardless, they’ll be cheering fiercely on the sidelines. When asked what her favorite part about being a mom is, the question lingers in the air for a moment; she even repeats it back. “It’s just so rewarding,” she says after a brief pause. “We have so much responsibility raising a little human being; you’re raising someone who can change the world.”

“It’s fun to find new ways to stay fit.”—Laila Ali She says this coming from a unique perspective because her father actually did it; he actually changed the world. Renowned boxer and humanitarian Muhammad Ali struck down social barriers and made an impact worldwide all while floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee. “It’s not just one of those things where you say to your kids, ‘Oh you can change the world!’” she clarifies, “No, no, no you can change the world. Like for real. That’s what we do,” she laughs. Confidence, spirituality, sense of purpose in life and compassion for others are some of the elements she aims to instill in her kids, like her parents instilled in her at a young age. Ultimately, she says, kids learn by example. “I learned a lot from watching my dad, watching how he treated people,” she says. “Kids learn from watching what we do even more than listening to what we say.” As for Laila’s kids, if they were able to see her in her prime 24-0, 21 knockout-boxing career, they’d have the same idea of their mom today as an entrepreneur, author, inspirational speaker, health and wellness expert—and the list goes on. “I go after what I want,” she says. “I don't let fear and doubt stop me. Instead I prove to myself, and others, that I can achieve anything I put my mind to. Then, of course, I'm willing to do the hard work it takes to be successful at my goals.” This mindset isn’t anything new. Even before boxing was in the picture, Laila had already taken classes at Santa Monica College and soon started her own business. “I've always been independent and ambitious,” she says. “I went to cosmetology school while I was in high school and earned a license to be a manicurist. I built up my clientele and had my own salon by the time I was 18.” Through this first venture, she realized that if she had a vision, a plan and added in some hard work, she knew she could accomplish anything. Whether it was putting on her tap shoes for “Dancing with

the Stars,” co-hosting shows like “We Need To Talk” on CBS Sports Network and “All In With Laila Ali,” an extreme sports meets human interest inspirational series, she continues to use her platform to not only be a prodigious example for her family, but for all women to look up to and aspire to be. Notably, Claressa Shields, the 22-year-old two-time Olympic gold medalist boxer, goes on record saying that she first picked up boxing gloves because of Laila. Claressa’s dad, a former boxer, told her the story of how Laila followed her dad’s footsteps and pursued boxing, so she was eager to do the same. And in 2016, after her second gold medal win in Rio, Claressa was awarded the Women’s Sports Foundation Sportswoman of the Year for an individual sport, bridging the gap of what was, to what is. That famous, noteworthy last name of “Ali” has become synonymous with iconic, champion and philanthropic, but Laila says she’s not done yet. “I don't think much about my legacy because I am too busy dealing with right now,” she laughs. “But I will always live my life with integrity and compassion for others. I want to be able to live life to the fullest by evolving into the person I am destined to be. I allow myself space to learn and grow and hopefully will have a positive impact on others during my lifetime.” It would seem that with great genes comes great responsibility; in order to live out this lifestyle, it takes courage, resilience and a large helping of intentional self-confidence. “I was confident in my abilities every time I stepped into the boxing ring,” Laila says about channeling her fighter mentality in everyday life. “My confidence came from my preparation. When I know I have done everything in my power to be ready for the moment, I am able to let go of any fear or doubt and have faith in knowing that all I have left to do is my best. I pretty much face every challenge with that same attitude.” The challenge to continue to fight for others—girls, children, women, moms, everyone—may seem like an impossible feat, but impossible? That’s nothing.

Can You Smell What The Rock is Cooking?

• A celebrity guest Laila hopes to have on her podcast—Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. “He is someone I want to speak to because he was an athlete, like me, but he’s been able to crossover and still be a positive person and a positive role model. He didn’t sell himself out; I admire that.”

Meet Two-Time Gold-Medalist Water Polo Attacker Courtney Mathewson

WRITTEN BY: ELAINE MORGAN CUTTING | PHOTOGRAPHED BY: GIUSEPPE DEMASI HAIR & MAKEUP BY: HEATHER BALAAM

From the first match at the 2016 Rio Olympics, USA Water Polo Attacker, Olympic veteran and Orange County native Courtney Mathewson knew the USA team was going to go home with the gold. What she didn’t know, was how soundly they would defeat their competition, quite literally blowing them out of the water. It was an exciting follow up from a monumental first-time gold victory in the 2012 London Olympics and for Mathewson, it was the culmination and perfect ending to her long and wildly-successful water polo career.

95

“You’re putting your body and mind out on the line just to get pounded every single day… if you don’t give 100 percent, then you’re not making your teammates any better. You’re battling every single day because you want to improve yourself and your teammates.”—Courtney Mathewson

Mathewson began swimming competitively at five years old. Her friend was on the team so she wanted to join, and she enjoyed every moment. Three years later, Mathewson was introduced to water polo and it was love at first sight. Admittedly, she was most attracted to the co-ed aspect of the activity, but she was also intrigued by a sport played in the water, so she signed up and immediately excelled. “I love how competitive it is,” says Mathewson. “It’s fast-paced and aggressive, but it also has a skill and an art to it, if played at the right level.” From there, Mathewson’s love and dedication for the sport increased, and there was no doubt that she had a knack for it. She competed in Jr. High and club teams, and by her freshman year at Canyon High School, she was already receiving letters from universities. However, there was only one school that Mathewson’s heart was set on— UCLA. In fall of 2003, she was registered as an official Bruin, where her competitive water polo career continued to grow. While she was on the team, UCLA women’s water polo won the school’s historic 100th national championship, and Mathewson knew her love for the sport would go beyond the collegiate level.

F

The road after college to the 2012 London Olympics was a long and strenuous one. She was one of the youngest members on the USA team. Training was long and rigorous and Mathewson was pushing herself every day. “Water polo was everything I thought about,” says Mathewson. “I designed my life around it. My family, my husband; it was just water polo and what can I do to prepare myself that I would be in good physical shape.” However, just before taking off for the beginning of the 2012 Olympics, disaster struck in the form of a torn ulnar ligament and flexor in Mathewson’s left arm, leaving her 96 LOCALE MAGAZINE

severely injured. Deep in denial about the extent of her injuries and unwilling to give up her spot on the Olympic roster, Mathewson played through the pain of her recovery and made it to London, where the team took gold for the first time in USA women’s water polo history. Despite the elation of this incredible victory, Mathewson was disappointed in her performance. “You always dream of how you want to perform at the Olympic games and I think this was a huge setback for me,” she says. So, Mathewson began the journey again, reaching towards the 2016 Olympics in Rio. With a gold medal already in place, the coaches were stepping up their game and this renewed determination showed itself in practice. The women trained hard for 18 months, six and a half hours a day, six days a week, constantly pushing past physical and mental boundaries. Training consisted of intensive weight lifting, running, heavy swimming, team and individual meetings, psychology classes and, of course, polo strategy. It was exhausting work, but Mathewson took it one day at a time. “My teammates and our coaching staff are the ultimate inspiration,” says Mathewson. “You’re putting your body and mind out on the line just to get pounded every single day… if you don’t give 100 percent, then you’re not making your teammates any better. You’re battling every single day because you want to improve yourself and your teammates.”

Let’s Go Ducks! As an Anaheim native, Mathewson and her husband are huge Anaheim Ducks fans. Since his family has season tickets, they attend games often and show their support proudly.

Playing Tourist With a tight schedule at the Rio Olympics, the team didn’t get a lot of time for sightseeing. But Mathewson was grateful for the brief opportunity to visit Christ the Redeemer. “It’s breathtaking in person,” she says. “You always see pictures of it, one of the wonders of the world, and then to actually see it in person, it gave me the chills.”

This battle was well fought, and by the time the USA women’s water polo team made it to the Rio Olympics, they already had the gold in their sights. “We were just better prepared, more focused, more determined,” says Mathewson. And this determination showed up in every single game. They beat every opponent spectacularly, crushing their opposition by as high as 10 points. In the gold-winning game against Italy, team USA won 125. “At the beginning, we said we played really well,” said Mathewson. “Then on reflection it was more like ‘No, we actually dominated everyone at that tournament’ and I think that was just a testament to the way we prepared.” Travel Bug Mathewson’s professional polo career has instilled a deep love of traveling. She is a proud sufferer of the “travel bug” on which she blames her polo career. “That’s something water polo has given me that I would have never done if I had a normal 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. job,” says Mathewson. “I’ve had the privilege of traveling all over the world and seeing some really cool spots.”

After this all-time career high, and after 22 long years of the intense sport, Mathewson is finally finished with competitive water polo and after intense reconstructive surgery on her shoulder, it seems her body agrees with her. But, with two Olympic gold medals locked safely away, Mathewson is happy to try something new. Currently, her sights are set on returning to school to gain her teaching degree and go into special education. More immediately, Mathewson and her husband are expecting a baby girl in September and they couldn’t be more excited for this next stage in her life. “I feel really good about the success I’ve had and it’s very fortunate to be part of all the teams that I was,” says Mathewson. “It’s nice to close that chapter and move on to something else.”

LEAGUE

OF THEIR OWN Harness Your Inner Jedi at the Lightspeed Saber League

Since the ‛70s, Star Wars has made a momentous impact on the world. As the franchise grows, with new movies and even its own place in Disneyland, fans continue to honor the saga in exciting and unique ways. After Episode VII was released, the lightsaber community blossomed, and the small training group from Irvine known as Knight Club became the Lightspeed Saber League, “the fastest light-based weapon combat in the galaxy.” With bases in Los Angeles, Irvine and Orange, the league combines fans’ love for Star Wars with elements of tango and stick fighting. However, lightsaber fencing isn’t just a bunch of Star Wars fans playing around; it is an athletic and intense spectator sport. “I created the sport of Lightspeed-sabery (or Lightspeed-saber fencing) and the League to fix the major problems in modern fencing, and so that the world would finally have a form of lightsabery that was fun to watch, fun to play, safe, athletic, and true to the idea of the lightsaber as presented on-screen, with zero choreography,” said Founder and Head Coach, Cang Snow.

WRITTEN BY: NICOLE HAKIM PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NATHAN WHELAN

REBEL ALLIANCE Orange is the central point of the league, but Irvine is the largest base operated.

COME TO THE DARK SIDE

As of 2017, the Lightspeed Saber League has about 40 regular members throughout its three bases and sometimes hosts members from other organizations that come and go. The environment is extremely welcoming, so those looking to join the league have no need to feel scared or apprehensive. Everyone is fairly new, and no one is an expert, so every

member learns, teaches and grows with everyone else. In addition to a friendly environment, new members must expect to sweat a lot as the sport is exciting and intense, and it will definitely leave them trying to catch their breath as they eagerly await their next match. When it comes to matches, the length varies. If two members are merely sparring, the duel can last as long as they want, but if they are facing off in a match, it usually lasts around five to 10 minutes. Two members donning the necessary equipment, a fencing mask, a durable lightsaber, padded gloves and comfortable clothes, start off in a fencing box and gesture to each other. These gestures are friendly and can be a fist bump, a salute, a blade tap or a high five—all of which are encouraged between rounds to keep the match friendly and fun. “There's nothing like watching a beautiful exchange of blades, a narrow-escape, a perfect feint, etc.,” said Snow. The league follows a point system that is enforced by a referee, and any contact to the saber hilt or any part of the body counts as a point to whoever lands it. There are no prizes in the general matches, but both members are left with a sense of pride at the end of the match for having competed so well. As a fun and exciting way to spend your evenings, the Lightspeed Saber League offers Star Wars fans a way to come together and share a memorable experience. If you're still hesitant about joining just remember what Yoda said, "Do or do not, there is no try."

Prospective members can join the group through Facebook, and once they have all the necessary equipment, they can find a base through the website to get started.

ISLANDS ARE EXCITING, encapsulated worlds that inspire some of the

greatest stories ever told—”Gulliver’s Travels,” “Swiss Family Robinson” and “The Odyssey,” to name a few. Growing up an avid reader, my imagination often wandered to outlandish, far away locales in the middle of the sea. I even sketched many of my own treasure maps, complete with erupting volcanoes and lurking sea serpents. Years later, I finally got the chance to realize my childhood fantasies of nautical exploration, just off the Southern California coast in Channel Islands National Park.

My girlfriend and willing adventure partner, Mallory, and I arrived at Ventura Harbor an hour early for our 11 a.m. departure. The morning sun was gentle and a soft breeze carried with it a hint of salt, the perfect recipe for an excursion on the high seas. We joined a queue of bird watchers and sugar-rushed kids outside of Island Packers Cruises, all of us anxious to board the double-decker catamaran docked below. For almost 50 years Island Packers has been the facilitator of education, recreation and scientific research on all five of the Channel Islands. We were about to set sail for the largest, Santa Cruz, where we would be camping for one night in Scorpion Canyon Campground. Once everyone shuffled on and the all clear was given, the twin engines rumbled to life and we scooted our way out of the port. A sea lion lounging on a buoy lifted a fin as he rolled over, undoubtedly wishing us bon voyage. The shoreline grew fainter and the motor really opened up, sending strong gusts ruffling through my hair. White splashes erupted from the ocean surface as dolphins played in our wake, much to the awe of every passenger. The captain’s voice scratched over the intercom, informing us that for every visible dolphin, there were likely four more concealed beneath in this

enormous pod. Nutrient rich waters that surround the Channel Islands create a sanctuary for biodiversity and the largest concentration of marine mammals on Earth. In addition to several different dolphin and porpoise species, 27 different whales have been seen there, offering a year-round spectacle for nature lovers. An hour passed by and the boat anchored in the azure waters of Scorpion Harbor, where you can rent kayaks and paddle around rocky spires. After retrieving our gear, we set out on the quarter mile hike to the campground, taking in the towering sea cliffs and ranch house relics of a bygone era. We were carrying provisions for the next 24 hours, along with sleeping bags and a tent, so the straps of our backpacks weighed especially heavy on our shoulders as the temperature rose. While both day trips and camping are an option on all of the islands, only Santa Cruz is equipped with running water; be extremely prepared if you plan to stay overnight and if you pack it in, pack it out. We stopped to grab a map and check out the airconditioned visitor center, where exhibits tell the story of Santa Cruz’s rich, layered history. For over 9,000 years before European contact, the Chumash people occupied the island and traversed the channel in plank canoes to trade valuable

What’s in a Name?

• Santa Cruz Island’s name came from a Chumash Indian who found a staff and returned it to the priest who had left it. To show their gratitude, the Spaniards called the island “La Isla de Santa Cruz,” which translates to the Island of the Sacred Cross.

shells and pelts with other tribes on the mainland. During the Civil War, an estimated 24,000 sheep roamed the surrounding hills and valleys as ranchers strained to meet the skyrocketing demand for wool. Smugglers even exploited the desolate coastline to stockpile their loot, adding intrigue and lore to the region as only pirates can. Papery bark crinkled softly underfoot as we reached our campsite in a welcoming grove of eucalyptus trees. Not long after setting up, we received our first visitor, a sniffing island fox with a creased left ear. Santa Cruz is home to a resurgent population of this native canid, found nowhere else in the world. After being nearly wiped out, they now spend the day scavenging for scraps of careless campers, so we locked our food up before heading out on a hike. From the campsite, there are several trails that branch out to various extents of the island, like Montañon Ridge and Potato Harbor, but those were a huge time commitment, so we opted for the short loop to Cavern Point, a picturesque climb high above the shore. It was the ideal spot to watch the sun set along the length of the coastline, as vibrant orange shifted to a deep fuchsia, and pinpricks of light began to appear in the heavens. The sky darkened and we made our way back to the beach to settle in for an

hour or two of stargazing. There, 20 miles from the nearest city lights, the cosmos could be appreciated in its full splendor. The Milky Way rose out of the southern sky like the arm of a glimmering colossus, its band a complete arc across the inky darkness. Some easily recognizable constellations peered down at us as well: Orion’s Belt, the Big Dipper and Sagittarius. The next morning, Mallory and I set out on a trek across the island to Smugglers Cove, determined to make the most of our remaining time. Though strenuous, the views along the way were unmatched; the rich earthen hues of the mountains clashed with vivid aqua blues and green swaths of vegetation. A dip in the waves was a refreshing reward, but the cobblestone beach made sunbathing an uncomfortable endeavor. In the waning minutes of our island excursion, we lounged by the rocks at Scorpion Anchorage, soaking our tired feet while awaiting the ferry’s return. There’s something humbling about sitting on the shore, waiting to see a boat materialize on the horizon. It strengthened my appreciation for the remaining wild places on the planet. Whether you choose to visit for a day or stay for a week, Santa Cruz Island is an extraordinary opportunity to create your own story.

LOCALE MAGAZINE 109

Everyone has a plan or idea of what they want their life to look like. You continue down this path, stumbling over small obstacles and challenges that come your way to try and achieve your “perfect life.” Then something happens that takes you completely off your desired path and into new, uncharted territory. Fear and uncertainty are all around, leaving you with the choice to either be consumed by it or to rise above. This is a story of one man who was ripped from his planned life and unwillingly put on a completely different course. This is the story of the tenacity of the human spirit and the generosity of another man who came alongside to help with the unexpected journey. Just over five years ago near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Jonas Letieri was happily living his life and surfing as much as he could. Being in the water and surfing was like magic to Jonas; it was what he loved and where he found great joy. He brought this joy to his local church. One day, the church needed a new sign to be hung—three stories up. Volunteering for the task, Jonas climbed up and started to install the metal sign with both hands. And then his life changed forever. He accidentally touched a power line resulting in an electric current charging through his body and throwing him off the building. He woke up in the hospital to find he was on the road to recovery but with one change—he had lost both his hands and part of his arms.

J

Jonas made a full recovery from his injuries and began to figure out what his life was going to look like now without full arms and with no hands. Everything had to be relearned, be it eating, getting dressed or driving. In the midst of figuring all of this out, he also put on his list learning how to surf again. For Jonas, it wasn’t a question of if he could surf, it was a question of how he was going to surf. So he told his 110 LOCALE MAGAZINE

father of his plan, took his board to the ocean, hit the water, and paddled out. His dad thought he was crazy but supportive. How was he possibly going to surf? And it wasn’t easy. For over a year, Jonas tried to find a way to make it work. He could catch a wave, but popping up to a standing position was proving to be difficult. After innumerable unsuccessful attempts, one day he did it—caught a wave, stood up, and rode it. And at that moment when he was riding the wave, he got his life back. But the challenges still remained, so he kept searched for solutions. Cue stand up paddle boarding. It made sense due to the fact that Jonas wasn’t having problems catching waves, he was having problems standing up. With a SUP, it is a non-issue. However, the new struggle was how to paddle without the use of his hands. Once again, his father was unsure about it all, but he wasn’t going to stop Jonas. With his help, they were able to make some modifications to a stand-up paddle at home using a PVC pipe they found in the backyard. Using his invention, he was able to draw the blade back and propel himself forward. The top of the paddle could be used as a handle to give the other arm leverage. It wasn’t ideal, but it worked. Without missing a beat, Jonas started to enter and compete in SUP

events. As it turns out, he is a true talent in the sport. The years of surfing combined with being a trained athlete allowed him to keep up with the pack and be competitive. This got the attention of lots of people, but one person, in particular, saw Jonas race one day and was in the position to help make his paddling even better. It happened during a SUP race in Idaho, where difficult whitewater conditions caused all the paddlers in one heat to fall off their boards after the first large drop. All the paddlers ended up in the water, except Jonas. He came paddling down the river around the buoy seemingly unscathed by the conditions. When the crowd saw this, they stood up and started chanting his name and cheering him on to victory. One of the spectators in the crowd that day was Jim Terrell. Remembering it still brings tears to his eyes. “If you were there that day, you saw something great,” Jim recounts. A native of Ohio and a four-time Olympic canoeist, he has extensive experience competing around the world and knows a lot about paddling. Now as the owner of Quickblade Paddles, he lives in California and designs paddles. After seeing Jonas, he thought, if Jonas could do as well as he did with a homemade

His loss could not put a dent in his plans, and when people watch him race, they are inspired by his love of the sport and the joy he brings. paddle, how much better could he be with a custom paddle? So Jim set to work, making designs and prototypes until he came across a paddle design that he thought could work for Jonas. He kept the concept of the rings around the shaft of the blade that Jonas had on his homemade version, but added a curved surface as a handle that allowed Jonas to have greater control of the paddle and transfer more of his energy into the water. He brought Jonas up from Brazil to California to give it a try. With some tweaks along the way, Jonas walked away with a brand new paddle that was exactly what he needed to up his game. When Jim looks back at how he came to know Jonas, he is overwhelmed by the perseverance of this stellar athlete. In Jonas he sees a human being who wants nothing more than to be on the water. His loss could not put a dent in his

plans, and when people watch him race, they are inspired by his love of the sport and the joy he brings. But while others may be focusing on his disability, Jonas is just focused on the race. That’s not to say that it’s always easy, but the same sheer determination that got him back on the water after the accident carries him through each event and any difficult conditions. Although Jim may have helped Jonas by designing a paddle, Jim feels like he has received the true gift. He believes he is fortunate to have been a part of Jonas’ journey. Jonas’ life may now look very different than what he dreamed of years ago, but there is a crowd of people on this new path cheering him on. Jonas agrees, “It’s crazy, but the accident was the best thing that happened in my life. I thought everything was gone, but it’s not at all. I have so much more now.”

Cali Conscious This Local Band is Bringing a Breath of Fresh Air to Southern California WRITTEN BY: IAN HAYS PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NATHAN WHELAN

Their music focuses on not just curating a positive sonic vibe, but lyrically bringing socially conscious messages to the world—and they have the track record to prove it.

There are plenty of bands solely focused on trying to make it big. Often, that tunnel vision pushes everything else to the side. When fame is the only goal, an “it’s all about me” mindset tends to develop. Cali Conscious is not one of those bands.

every summer, and they also play at spots like Marine Room Tavern in Laguna Beach and Pacific City in Huntington Beach. This summer, they are playing a set of nine shows at Descanso Beach Club on Catalina Island, bringing their vibes to the high seas.

The Orange County locals play what they call “barefoot beach reggae.” The music is breezy and always accompanied by a positive message. The band officially took shape around 2010 when founder, Justin Ratowsky, met singer/multi-instrumentalist Diogba “Dig” Gbye. Gbye came to the states from Liberia and the two instantly hit it off over their mutual love for classic reggae artists like Bob Marley and newer staples like Iration. As the years went on, more members came on board to flesh out harmonies and add in varying instrumentation like the trumpet and keys.

For Cali Conscious, playing music is only one piece of the puzzle as the band practices what they preach. Their music focuses not only on curating a positive sonic vibe, but also lyrically bringing socially conscious messages to the world—and they have the track record to prove it. From 2012 to 2014, they organized and hosted a monthly beach cleanup in Huntington Beach. Then in 2013, the band collected $5,000 from their tips and donated it to the construction of a clean water well in Ethiopia. Using music as the root to link local and global activism, Cali Conscious has taken what it means to be in a band to a new level.

Cali Conscious are regulars at Dana Wharf’s Live Music Harbor Cruise

The Experts: Paulina and Josh Lackey

Credentials: Owners of Rollin’ Creamery

Power Couple: The Lackeys were the first locals to bring this Thai-style ice cream to Orange County.

When Paulina and Josh Lackey got married, they quit their jobs and took off on their honeymoon for nine months. Nearly one year and 19 countries later, they returned to the US with more than just a great Instagram feed; they came home with dreams of starting a business. While visiting Thailand, they first learned about and tried rolled ice cream, something they had never seen in America. The idea is something not commonly found in the United States: take a single serving of a liquid ice cream base and pour it on a freezing metal pan. Add whatever toppings you’d like and then mix it vigorously with metal paddles while the mixture freezes. Once frozen, using the metal paddles, the ice cream is peeled off the pan in thin layers that naturally roll up. Take a few of these ice cream rolls, put them in a cup, add some more toppings if you’d like, and voilà, you have Thai-style rolled ice cream. This variation on the chilly treat has spread like wildfire throughout Thailand and Asia and has now made its way to Orange County with the Lackeys’ unique ice cream shop: Rollin’ Creamery in Fountain Valley.

“WE CAME BACK AFTER BEING GONE FOR NINE MONTHS WITH NO JOBS AND NO MONEY AND WANTING TO START A BUSINESS.” —JOSH LACKEY

It’s not your typical ice cream shop. Nothing is pre-made. There is not an array of different flavors laid out in a freezer for you to select from. In fact, there isn’t any ice cream at all—there are just three metal pans waiting for the next order. Instead of pointing to the scoop you want, you order off a menu of different combinations of flavors and mix-ins that have been tried and tested. Once an order is placed, the staff goes into action creating quite a ruckus with the metal paddles mixing and churning the liquid cream until it is ready to be made into the delicate rolls of frozen goodness. It is truly a sight to behold. The result is both unique and delightful. But how Paulina and Josh went from honeymooners to small business owners is a story as interesting as the ice cream they are selling. 120 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Q: How long did it take to go from concept to opening? Josh Lackey: We came back from traveling in August of 2015 and officially opened Rollin’ Creamery in January 2017. We came back after being gone for nine months with no jobs and no money and wanting to start a business. It was very difficult to convince people to help us with something they had never heard of. We were showing them the concept and pictures but with no luck until we finally found a location that would work with us. Q: How do you explain the style of ice cream you sell at Rollin’ Creamery? Paulina Lackey: It’s Thai-style rolled ice cream. We take our fresh mixture of cream and add their toppings, freeze it in front of them and it turns into ice cream. Then we roll it up. JL: It’s an ingenious idea for the night markets that are common in Thailand. If you want to sell ice cream and have a wide variety of flavors, you can’t bring out huge tubs of ice cream and scoop them out. So with this, you can make any flavor you want to on the pan as needed. Q: What are some of the flavors they have in Thailand? PL: Very similar to here. Lots of tropical flavors of course but they

also have Oreos and stuff there too. So something like cookies ‘n cream is very popular. JL: Actually the very first Thai rolled ice cream we ordered, I ordered the mango and [Paulina] ordered the Oreo but we ended up getting a combination of both. PL: It was mango ice cream with Oreos in it—it wasn’t bad, surprisingly! Q: What’s the difference between ice cream in Thailand and what you are making here? JL: A lot of the ice cream in Asia, especially at the night markets in Thailand, is powder based. The reason for this is just a matter of refrigeration as having fresh milk is easy to spoil in the heat. That quality is not what we can make here, so we use fresh milk. Q: What is in the ice cream base that you use here? PL: It’s an ice cream mixture that we have created specifically for the store. In any case, it’s best experienced in person so you can watch the milk being frozen and turned into neat rolls. It is truly culinary artistry at its finest and most delicious.

Creme & Sugar is owned by Joanna Czikalla, who always wanted to own a shop. It was either that or become a rock star, and when the opportunity presented itself, she took it. She started out with things like coffee, ice cream, and cake—baked from a recipe that she got from her mother and grandmother, who Czikalla also credits her love of anything whimsical, for the inspiration of her menu and ideas. Having gone to Disneyland nearly every weekend when she was younger, she aims to take the fairy tale feel she adores and share it with her customers.

With flights of red, white, rosé and red blend wine, you’ll be the happiest you’ve been all week. Feeling daring? Opt for the Blind Flight, also known as Oehl Flight, a blind tasting named after the artist who created the artwork in the restaurant. You can even add a bruschetta pairing for only $4 to any of the flights. Angelina’s isn’t your average Italian restaurant, not only for their incredible fare, but also because of their perspective on how people should be treated. They believe that family is of the utmost importance, and not just the family you were born with. This ideology extends to friends, neighbors, coworkers and, you guessed it, guests of the restaurant. So when you dine at Angelina’s, you’re dining with family.

THE FATHER OF SURFING

Escape to Hawaii With Duke’s Mai Tai

Ò Duke’s Huntington Beach is named after Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, world famous surfer and swimmer. He won multiple Olympic medals in swimming, setting records along the way. He is also credited with bringing surfing to the masses and popularizing it everywhere that the ocean meets sand.

HAWAIIAN HIATUS

Don’t Touch

Mai Drink Southern California is known for its pristine beaches and beautiful weather. But there is something about Hawaii that calls out to mainlanders. The water just seems a little bluer; the warmth in the air is just a little friendlier. Hawaii is synonymous with vacation. Unfortunately, we can’t just take a vacation whenever we want to the island paradise. But, Duke’s Huntington Beach is the next best thing to a Hawaiian vacation. The restaurant is located along PCH, a stone’s throw from the water. On the beach below, you can see volleyball players, surfers and frequent suntanners. The restaurant is designed with upscale and chic beach bungalow décor. But what completes the Hawaiian vacation experience is their famous Mai Tai. The cocktail is served in a festive

glass fashioned in a Polynesian tribal mask style. It also comes complete with a mini toothpick umbrella and pineapple slice. But looks will only get you so far. It is the taste that really transports you to your favorite island resort. Duke’s Mai Tai is a trade secret. But, it does boast fresh Hawaiian juices and two kinds of rum. This expert blending not only quenches your thirst but slowly relaxes your muscles until your dining room chair is as comfortable as lounging on a white, sandy beach. Duke’s Mai Tai is also carefully crafted to pair well with their menu items. A Duke’s Mai Tai accompanied by their Crab Cakes and Preserved Lemon Remoulade? It’s a meal fit for anyone dreaming of that tropical paradise on a Tuesday afternoon.

Ò You can stop by every Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for “Waikiki Wednesdays.” There’s live ukulele music and assorted entertainment.

SPIRIT OF ALOHA

Ò Duke’s and the T S Restaurants family run “Legacy of Aloha,” their charitable organization. It is “grounded in the spirit of giving without an expectation of receiving anything in return” with a focus on community outreach. They work to curb hunger, assist the elderly, save the environment and positively promote Hawaiian culture within each restaurant’s local community.

But what completes the Hawaiian vacation experience is their famous Mai Tai.

WINEMAKER K Y L I E H U F F M A N SPILLS ON THE ‘COOLEST JOB IN THE WORLD’

WRITTEN BY: CARLI CRITCHFIELD PHOTOGRAPHED BY: ERIK ISAKSON

Expert: Kylie Huffman Credentials: Head Winemaker at Rancho Capistrano Winery College Living: Kylie started making wine during her senior year at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Orange County wine lovers—discover the taste of Napa, Tuscany and Temecula Wine Country in South Orange County! That’s right, Rancho Capistrano Winery in San Juan Capistrano will transport you there. Kylie Huffman, the winery’s winemaker, goes in detail with us about what it takes to be a winemaker and all the greatest wines that will make you feel like you are sitting under the Tuscan sun when you are really around the corner from your own home. So sit back, relax and pour yourself a glass.

“It really is the coolest job in the world.” —Kylie Huffman

World Traveling Wine After graduating from college, Huffman completed a series of internships at wineries in San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, New Zealand and Australia. Beach Babe Huffman grew up by the beach and didn’t know much about wine until Cal Poly.

“Our goal at Rancho Capistrano Winery is to have a new wine to try every time you come in.” —Kylie Huffman

Q

Your wine options are quite vast. How do you come up with the wine menu?

Kylie Huffman: Our goal at Rancho Capistrano Winery is to have a new wine to try every time you come in. A lot of our decisions are based on quality of the fruit that is available. I can tell from the beginning if a wine is going to be really good simply by taste and smell. It's so exciting! The final steps of winemaking often entails blending, which will also dictate if we have a new wine, by blending different proportions of different varietals.

136

LOCALE MAGAZINE

Q: What is the process behind making a new wine? KH: For new wine I begin by transferring the must (grapes, stems, skins and seeds) into a stainless steel tank through a pump. I will inoculate with yeast to ensure a thorough fermentation process of about two weeks. The yeast converts the sugar into alcohol, CO2 and the aromas and flavors of the wine. Where all the magic begins! It smells incredible by the way! Q: Do you prefer red or white wine, and which wine is your favorite on the list right now? KH: I love both. It depends on what I'm doing, where I am, the weather and my mood. I am usually drawn to reds more than whites. I am a sucker for a big bold complex [Cabernet]. My favorite wine right now is the new Mission Grenache. It's the perfect red for summer because of its light body and chalky, yet oaky palate. We also have an amazing new Zinfandel that literally brings a smile to my face when I sip it. Q: Winemaking sounds like a great job. How did you get into it? KH: It really is the coolest job in the world. I considered culinary school after college. A degree in wine/Viticulture

would have served as a complement to cooking. I was required to complete an internship at a winery while at Cal Poly, and once I started working at a winery, I fell in love. There was so much to learn! Working with your hands, the physicality of it, the freedom, the connection to nature, the art, the business, following the tides or seasons; it feels natural. Q: What is the best food pairing with your favorite red wine? White? KH: I love pairing our Pinot Noir, Romeo with our Pan Seared Salmon or any of our fresh fish catch of the day. Our Kale Chicken Caesar salad pairs perfectly with our crisp mineral, Mission Pinot Gris. Q: What is included in the wine club? KH: If you live in Orange County, you need to become a Rancho Capistrano Winery wine club member. Members receive two bottles of wine a month, two free glasses of wine every time you come in, a 15 percent discount on all other bottles you purchase and access to the best and most beautiful outdoor patio! We are a full functioning restaurant and our food is delicious. What other winery can you be a wine club member and visit every day and drink free wine?

Leggings have become the most versatile piece in every closet. To take your legging game to the next level, Goldsheep’s stand-out leggings are here to help you make a statement.

Started by Keri Wilson, Goldsheep is not about taking the safe route; they know it’s better to stand out than to blend in. Growing up in Orange County, creativity was always a part of Wilson. From spray-painting murals and sewing her friend’s clothes, the idea for Goldsheep was always there, but it truly came to life in New York. “I used to walk to work every day in the city and see thousands of black [leggings] walking. I thought it looked so boring. I would also notice all the street art throughout the city. I started taking pictures of the street art and the idea came to me that it would be so awesome to have this art on my legs. I made my first prototype in my bedroom,” said Wilson. Each legging is unique since they are handmade when they’re ordered. “Every print is a photograph or piece of art created in

our shop in Costa Mesa. I think at this point it’s very easy to spot a Goldsheep print because it's super bright and fun and is like pop art on legs,” said Wilson. For Wilson, coming up with designs is a fun task and she sees art in the ordinary. “I honestly get my inspiration everywhere.” Not only do they want to dress everyone in fun prints, they also want to give back. One of their newest collections is inspired by Girl Scouts and proceeds go to benefit Troop 6000 in New York, which is made up of young girls in the New York shelter system. Goldsheep is manufactured in Orange County, bringing it back to Wilson’s roots. Mainly available online, you can find leggings in 17 locations around California. Goldsheep expanded to include shirts and accessories so you can polish off your look. Once you start, you won’t be able to stop buying these soft, trendy leggings—nor will you want to.

BACHELOR PARTY

• Nothing completes a “Bachelor” night like a glass of wine, friends and a comfy pair of leggings. Throw on The Final Rose leggings from Goldsheep for your next “Bachelor” viewing party.

TALK OF THE TOWN

• Goldsheep has been featured in various outlets including “The Ellen Degeneres Show” and “Good Morning America.”

DESIGNATED DRIVER TRAVIS JOHNSON AIMS TO CHANGE THE GOLF APPAREL GAME

WRITTEN BY: IAN HAYS

PHOTOGRAPHED BY: ERIK ISAKSON

Expert: Travis Johnson Credentials: Founder and President of Haus of Grey Wise Words: If Johnson could give his 16-year-old self any advice, it would be, “Don’t be so hard on yourself.”

Bellflower, CA native Travis Johnson was born with a 9-iron in hand. Golf has been his lifeblood since youth. He played for UCLA in college and went on for a stint in the pros. It was then that Johnson changed directions and decided to get into the game of golf apparel. He first founded TravisMathew, eventually selling. Over the past several years his focus has been on all things Haus of Grey. We caught up with the golfer/entrepreneur to discuss golf, his journey through clothing apparel and how Haus of Grey is set on changing everything golf apparel can be.

“MY PARENTS WERE GREAT ROLE MODELS. VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING I AM INVOLVED WITH TODAY STEMMED FROM THEM—GOLF, APPAREL, COMMUNITY.” —TRAVIS J OHN SON

Q: WHEN WAS THAT “AH-HA” MOMENT THAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START YOUR OWN GOLF CLOTHING LINE? Travis Johnson: Traveling worldwide is not easy; you’re on the road for three to five weeks at a time, lugging around your golf clubs and an additional 50-pound bag of apparel. There wasn't one brand in our market that offered a simple solution towards making traveling easier while preserving style and quality. Golf apparel was one dimensional. I thought, ‘How awesome it would be if a brand created apparel styled and designed for wear both on and off the course?’ 146 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Q: What was your childhood like? TJ: My parents were great role models. Virtually everything I am involved with today stemmed from them—golf, apparel and community. Q: Did golf come naturally to you? TJ: Golf came very naturally to me. My first golf tournament was at Gene List Par-3 Golf Course. I was five years old. I happened to be paired with local talent, Eldrick Woods, later known as Tiger. My pop took a photo of us as it was symbolic of my first tournament and is now a keepsake. Q: How did your peers and family react when you broke the news you were leaving golf to launch a golf clothing line? TJ: Honestly, my friends didn't take me seriously. However, once I created it, they quickly jumped on board. My family was supportive from the get-go. But my dad still asks me regularly, ‘So, when are you going to start playing again?’

Q: What was it about the state of golf clothing that you were looking to impact the most? TJ: Two things: enhancing the relationship between the golfer and their favorite brand of apparel and adding to the community surrounding the game. A personal mantra of mine is, ‘Capture culture by design, while promoting community through brand.’ I knew at that time the industry was ripe for a new name with an authentic vision. Q: Since 2012, you’ve focused solely on Haus of Grey. What is your approach to the brand? TJ: Haus of Grey serves as our holding company to our men's and women's house brands, Matte Grey and Heather Grey. This allows Haus of Grey the opportunity to take on additional projects within our areas of experience like brand consulting, design, distribution, event organizing, management, manufacturing, marketing, sales and/or sourcing. As for Matte Grey and Heather

“HONESTLY, MY FRIENDS DIDN'T TAKE ME SERIOUSLY. HOWEVER, ONCE I CREATED IT, THEY QUICKLY JUMPED ON BOARD.” —TRAVIS J OHN SON

Grey, they're mature and focused on building and serving our modern recreation community. Q: What do you believe sets Haus of Grey apart from other golf apparel? TJ: We have a loyal and active customer and partner base. Without our supporters, we wouldn't have grown as fast as we have. We strive to constantly improve and enhance our products and services. How we achieve that is a bit of our secret sauce, but it falls within the components of our brand DNA— ingenuity of products, quality customer service and a shotgun approach to marketing. Q: There wasn’t a large market for women’s golf apparel. Was this a factor in putting an emphasis on that? TJ: Having both a men's and women's

brand allows us to curate an even more direct message and focus within each brand. Our Heather Grey voice and product line can be elegant, yet strong. Q: What is one piece from Haus of Grey that best exemplifies the brand? TJ: Our Traveler Pant is by far the best combination of fabrication, fashion, fit and function. This pant offers the least wrinkling fabric I've ever worn. It’s classic with a modern heather blend. It’s not too narrow and appropriate for the office. The pant also features our center-back fifth pocket perfect for media devices, like the smaller golf range finders.

The Hotline Bling Charger, a Peptopink old-school cell phone shaped version, is inspired by Drake’s hit song.

There is nothing more stressful than when your phone is on two percent right as you’re trying to capture the perfect picture or hail an Uber. Portable chargers can be pricey and usually not very aesthetically pleasing, but now there's WattzUp Power! Co-creators Richard Vaughn and Wallace Vu started out with a sourcing and production company. WattzUp Power became an idea when they were working with Asics/Onitsuka Tiger to create 3D sneaker USB flash drives. Soon enough, the concept for a sneaker shaped power bank was being drawn up. The first ever chargers were released as a partnership with Asics/Onitsuka Tiger in the summer of 2015, and WattzUp Power officially came to be later that year. WattzUp Power chargers are anything but ordinary. They aim to connect with the people buying them, providing designs that are fun and differ from the simple tube or brick power banks that are already out in the market. They even had special edition chargers with celebrities like DJ Khaled and Kinjaz to brands like Vans and Nickelodeon giving the chargers an extra edge.

Q: What first drew you to interior design?

Summer Meddock: I’ve always had a love for design and creating something from start to finish. I’ve always admired people who were in the industry but never really thought I would start my own business. It wasn’t until a year and a half ago where I really started to consider what this would look like through the business I had before, which is also a business in the home decor realm. I knew I wouldn’t be doing that forever because I built everything by hand. When I put that business on hold, I got the vision for an interior design business that turned into Meddock Interiors. 176 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Q: Tell us about starting your own company while being a mother of three. SM: It’s crazy, to be totally transparent, but also a blessing because it allows me to have that avenue and outlet for creative expression other than teaching my kids and being a mama. It really allows me to have a break and differentiate between the two, because I’ve always been a person that enjoys working, being creative and being hands on. Q: How do you balance your growing company with motherhood and life? SM: Balance is a tricky thing. For us, we own a couple of restaurants, which my husband manages, so between the two of us we try to maintain open communication. We also try to make sure we have our work time and our family time. We go to church, we hang out after, we try to have our friends over so our kids can play with their buddies and we have our adult time. Q: What inspires you when coming up with a new design? SM: When it comes to decorating a client’s home, they really inspire me because they know what they really like. Sometimes it may take them a little time to figure it out, but what they are hoping to achieve really inspires me. Also, if I’m out and about in nature, sitting on the sand and totally relaxing, that tranquil setting also helps me hear from God about new ideas for my vision, projects and next steps. Those quiet moments help me see the bigger picture that ultimately leads to all the baby steps in relationships and projects. Q: What's the biggest challenge you've had to overcome with interior design? SM: You realize you don’t know everything, so you really have to position yourself in a humble way in that you are learning and have to ask questions and gain wisdom and understanding

from people who have already walked that journey. And just being totally honest with yourself in that I don’t know it all and that’s totally okay. I don’t think you ever stop learning so the humble approach is key. Q: What trends do you see today that will be long lasting in the interiors world? SM: This probably stems from my own personal style, but I hope we will always see the mix of clean and modern lines and textures with rustic charm. You see a lot of reclaimed items and wood elements. I think the mix of this with clean modern, like a concrete exterior on a house and a rustic fence around the yard, will always be around in some capacity. Q: What is your favorite space that you have designed and why? SM: Honestly I’d have to say LOCALE’s office, because we infused it with color and pattern and it just was really fun. I also love the transformation of Project Spielman because we just turned this home into a beautiful, classic, warm and refreshing space for the family. Q: For those looking to revamp their space, how do you suggest they get started? SM: I think the first item to always figure out is what you want the space to do. Do you want to create an environment with lots of seating for entertainment? Do you want to create a space with lots of extra storage because you have kids and need to conceal all the toys and mess kids make throughout the day? How do you want the space to work? Once you address that, you can go through and clean out what you don’t need, which is usually the hard part for people because sometimes we cling to things and associate them to memory. Then from there, it really gives you a fresh picture of what the capabilities are in the room. It opens the door for a new perspective.

“You realize you don’t know everything, so you really have to position yourself in a humble way in that you are learning and have to ask questions and gain wisdom and understanding from people who have already walked that journey.”—Summer Meddock

California kids usually have one thing in common: a deep love for the water. For Cooper Waterman, founder of Float Naked, an entire life spent in and around the water led to a brilliant idea—fabulous floats for everyone!

Waterman was born in LA, but his family relocated to Santa Barbara when he was a kid. Playing at the beach, soaking up the sun and always being in the ocean was standard. Every summer, his family would head to the East Coast to visit relatives. Even though the beaches were different, the fun and frolic were still the same. Growing up in such an idyllic way would prove to be the catalyst that changed his life. In 2016, after spending over a decade in and around the entertainment industry, Waterman wanted something more, “I wanted to produce something tangible

Making quality, durable pool floats in gorgeous colors and patterns seemed like the perfect way to have fun and make good use of his experience with beach living. Waterman knew that Float Naked could bring a special twist to the luxury pool float market: “We knew we could complement the industry and yet still retain our unique style,” said Waterman. Needless to say, Float Naked has received an incredible response in a short period. Starting out with an online store and an Instagram following, Float Naked will soon be available in select stores around the US and Australia. A new collection for summer 2017 is available, and a collaboration with Parker Palm Springs is currently in the works. Float Naked also plans to put together a percentage of sales to donate to Oceana and the Surfrider Foundation in the near future. Waterman is enjoying all the success that Float Naked has brought. “It’s a really exciting time now. We try to keep our growth as organic as possible, but we never know what that tipping point will be,” said Waterman.

When summer—or rather, summer weather—comes around, all we want to do is head down to the beach for a day of surf and sun. Of course, what fun is going to the beach without having something to eat? Bringing your own meal can be fun and creative, but sometimes it’s better to let someone else do the work and make sure you and your friends have a relaxing time, clinking glasses together and enjoying a tasty meal. The only way to make the experience even better is by having the beautiful ocean in your sights while you munch down on a Sunday brunch. Opened in 2015 and named one of Orange County’s Top 10 New Restaurants of 2016, BLK Earth Sea Spirits in Huntington Beach may just be the perfect place to have that satisfying and relaxing meal with a view. BLK offers a variety of excellent summer items on its menu that will make any brunch fantastic, including crab legs, fresh fruit, and, of course, the bloody mary bar. The restaurant is large and open thanks to its many windows, which provide the area with lots of natural light and give off a peaceful atmosphere that helps guests feel more at home. However, the thing about BLK that really gives it its summer glow is the view of the ocean gently lapping against the shores. It’s the icing on the top of the cake, and ultimately, creates an experience that is unique, comforting and lovely for friends and family.

Interview With Executive Chef Jesus Munoz

Q: Out of all the dishes, which is your favorite to prepare? Jesus Munoz: I love to make all my dishes. Especially the steaks. There is just something about the concept of steaks and seafood. Q Which dish bests captures a beachy/summer feel, and why? JM: Summer has to be seafood dishes. It’s what people are looking for when it’s summertime and it’s hot; they want something refreshing. Q: Describe the perfect brunch. JM: It all depends on the location; we are near the ocean, so it has to be seafood. We also have a bar station that is just for the bloody marys. There are all kinds of items like bacon, olives, cheeses; a lot of stuff that goes with the bloody marys.

Q: Where do you draw your inspiration from? JM: I love food. I love what I do. I love to produce new dishes and I love when I see the faces of the people enjoying what I’ve made for them; that is the inspiration for me. Q: When you’re not in the kitchen, whose cooking do you enjoy the most? JM: I have to cook my own food to enjoy my dishes, but really, I have really good cooks. They have a passion for what they do. Q: Are there any new additions coming to the menu that customers can look forward to? JM: I am working on a couple of them. It will be secret, so we will see what the people think when we present it to them.
