Glamping Sleep Under the Stars in Style
Under Canvas
editor's note It’s personally my favorite time of year—when there seems to be a little extra spark of joy in the air. The days are shorter with cozy nights spent at home, warm coffee drinks sipped on cool mornings and time to reflect on the past year while looking ahead to the future. And yes, we all know, what a year it’s been. In this issue of LOCALE, we present to you A SoCal Wish List, chock-full of dreamy escapes so you can start planning your much-needed 2021 vacations, staycations and weekend getaways, all while browsing holiday gifts for everyone on your list. Whether you’re searching for a glamping experience at a National Park (pg. 60), an island adventure (pg. 70) or a quaint seaside getaway (pg. 54), you’ll be making your travel bucket list in no time. ‘Tis the season for all things merry and bright! We take a look at how local restaurants have persevered
and pivoted this year (pg. 113), how to make a few festive holiday cocktails (pg. 131) and what goes into making a raw, vegan pumpkin spice cake from a beloved local “unbakery” (pg. 123). Our stunning cover star, Cedrice, graces the front of our issue— discussing authenticity and living unapologetically (pg. 42). Through her musical journey (as a contestant on Season 18 of “The Voice”), Cedrice shares a powerful story of self-discovery and identity. This year has taught us the importance of community and the fact that even if you have a plan, life has its bumps in the road, and you just gotta go with it. We adapt, we learn, we grow. Thank you for sticking with us and supporting our local community. Cheers to the holiday season and the year ahead. Happy holidays!

After Cedrice’s cover shoot one thing was made clear— everyone absolutely loved working with her. Her kindness, beauty and positivity radiated throughout the entire afternoon. She was a dream subject in the most stunning setting. Ray of Sunshine • Twirling around in a free-flowing dress on the staircase of the charming Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa, Cedrice is an absolute vision in yellow on the day of the cover shoot. Smiling from ear to ear, she dances around to the music that echoes from the speaker as the photographer snaps away. “The yellow dress from Van De Vort has a special place in my heart,” says wardrobe stylist Janelle Arreola. “The carefree style of the dress fit Cedrice’s personality perfectly!” Down to Earth • Earthy tones and neutral colors gave each look a natural, unrefined elegance. “Doing Cedrice’s make up was such a delight. She is a beautiful woman inside and out,” says makeup artist Natalie Bohlin. “She is an amazing talent, yet so down to earth!” She’s A Natural • “Her energy was authentic!” exclaims photographer Michael Wesley. “She brought a certain vibe on set, and as a musically creative person, she was equally as talented at immersing herself into the location and moment—a photographer’s dream!” Written By: Lauren Lewellen

“The Voice” Found Her, and She Found Her Voice CEDRICE’S JOURNEY TO DISCOVERING (AND LOVING) HER AUTHENTIC SELF WRITTEN BY: JORDAN NISHKIAN /// PHOTOGRAPHED BY: MICHAEL WESLEY STYLED BY: JANELLE ARREOLA /// MAKEUP BY: NATALIE BOHLIN
LOCALE MAGAZINE 43
There are many words you could use to describe Cedrice [Webber]: intelligent, kind-hearted, beautiful, talented—but the one she would probably agree with the most is authentic. scale of society,” she continues. “It was long, straight hair, and that equaled feminine.”
But this authenticity didn’t come naturally to the singer at first. At the age of 10, the same time her parents were going through a divorce, the singer was diagnosed with alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that caused her hair to fall out.
B
“When I lost my hair, I was looking for something to identify with,” she explains. “I looked in the mirror and didn’t like what I saw. My hair was falling out in clumps, and everyone was teasing me. I didn’t look like I belonged anywhere—I just kind of looked like this little awkward being.” Cedrice retreated into the desire for normalcy.
While the wigs made her more comfortable with her appearance, they were itchy, hot and highmaintenance. So, when she was older, she decided to join her mom on a quick errand to the store without a wig or headscarf just to see how she would feel. “I hated it,” she says. “I was like, ‘Everyone is staring at me; what’s wrong with me?’ Everyone stared and my mom kept whispering to me, ‘Everyone thinks you’re so beautiful.’” Despite her mother’s encouraging words, she still felt the need for her wig. She kept working on going wigless, though, with small steps like going out to get the mail, walking the dog and eventually going back to the store. “I would take all these little quick trips in order to inch my way out of feeling uncomfortable without my wig,” Cedrice explains, “so as I gradually stepped away from the wig, I started stepping into myself.”
At the time, she was enrolled in a performing arts school to sing. When her parents divorced, she stopped singing and began paying more attention to what wigs she was wearing to deflect attention from her hair. “I learned how to fit the mold of everyone else in order to not stand out,” says Cedrice. “I didn’t start singing again until I got past the wigs and the autoimmune disorder.”
“I didn’t have a choice when I was 10 years old to keep my hair—it just came out,” she continues, “and I had to face myself in the mirror and decide how long I was going to keep this act up.”
For years, the singer wore wigs to fit in, but she found that in the process of concealing her alopecia, she was concealing herself as well. She noticed that whatever wig she was wearing that day would dictate how she expressed herself in other ways, including how she spoke.
Something that helped Cedrice with this transition was music. “With music, when you’re on stage, people don’t care. They expect you to be different and unique,” she says with a smile. “It’s a different expectation when you’re an artist—you’re free to be whoever the hell you want to be—so I gave myself the permission to do that when I became a singer.”
“I really used hair to cover myself up. My hair determined how I spoke to people, how I moved my body and how I dressed,” Cedrice says. “I used to wear a particular style—long, straight and dark.” While this wig resembled her Filipino mother’s beautiful locks, Cedrice knew that this look strayed from her natural hair. “Back in the ‘90s, there wasn’t a lot of promotion of natural hair—which is deeply rooted in me because I’m also Black,” she explains. Growing up during a time where natural hair wasn’t really supported (it wasn’t until this year that the CROWN Act, which forbids discrimination against natural hair, was passed in California), Cedrice was often teased when she wore a wig that resembled her natural hair texture. “So the hair that I chose to wear was appropriate for the larger
Cedrice’s journey into her musical career began when she was 24 years old. Although she was enrolled in a university with a major in communications and a minor in theater, she didn’t feel that she was on the right path. “I didn’t really feel the calling to do anything in particular,” Cedrice explains. “I was kind of searching for something to be passionate about.” Then one day on campus, Cedrice was humming a tune when a musician approached her, asking if she was a singer. She told him that she sang, but didn’t consider herself a singer—but he wanted to hear her sing a few bars, which, of course, she nailed.

“I feel like I have the responsibility to turn the narrative around for my people.” —Cedrice
He invited her to join his band, which was a welcoming opportunity for her. Before this, she had joined a Pacific Islander music club, a gospel choir and theater on campus, but had never quite felt that she truly belonged to any of them.
H
In her 2017 TEDxSan Diego Talk, “Tell Me About Your Identity Crisis,” Cedrice recalls this experience of trying to figure out where she could really fit in. “I was confronted with more obstacles: I didn’t speak Tagalog, so I wasn’t Filipino; I wasn’t dark enough to be considered Black; I certainly didn’t look White,” she explains. Like most people with “multiethnic ambiguity,” Cedrice felt that she wasn’t enough of one thing and struggled to find where she belonged. This new band, however, was a mixture of genres— R&B, jazz, hip-hop and soul—and that helped Cedrice find her rhythm. She was able to see the universality of music, and that has helped her communicate and share herself with the world ever since.
This newfound authenticity opened Cedrice up to new opportunities, including her time on “The Voice” (Season 18), which allowed her to grow as an artist. “As far as my music goes,” she says, “I would be a lot less interesting if I hadn’t gone through the identity challenges that I’ve been through.”
Cedrice reflects this in “Woman,” a song she wrote two years ago, particularly in the line: If I am the only one / I am the only one telling the truth. “If I wasn’t going through any challenges at all, no one would be able to identify with me,” she explains. “I’m human. I have to have some sort of substance behind my music—behind what drives me.”
In a time when content is so easily accessible due to the internet and social media, representation is a powerful and necessary element, and Cedrice has become an honest and empowering representative to several types of individuals, including people with alopecia, multi-ethnic individuals and new musicians. “It really does humble me when people say that I’m a role model or that I’m interesting,” says Cedrice. “I know my life, I know what I’ve gone through. The fact that I’m growing from all of that and people appreciate me sharing my adversity, it’s really, really humbling and it’s really great.”
“In a way, I definitely identified with music because I was looking for something to identify with. I was looking for something to hold me above water, and music was that for me,” Cedrice continues. “And it’s elevated me to so much more than I expected.”
“You know, everyone can front like they’re perfect on Instagram and social media,” notes Cedrice. “I think there’s something really powerful about the anti-hero— I’m not necessarily the anti-hero, but I most certainly am not perfect, and I’m okay with sharing that.”
Now with her music, her presence on “The Voice” and her growing social media platform, Cedrice is doing her part to share her story in hopes of helping others who have experienced or are experiencing similar challenges. “Sharing my struggles keeps me accountable for who I am and what my journey is,” she says. “I wasn’t given these gifts and these challenges to act like everything’s great and dandy and that I’m perfect. I’m here because I’m supposed to be sharing my struggles and giving other people inspiration to share theirs and to be okay with that.”
With a career that’s only just beginning to fully blossom, the singer and actress is happy and ready to bring her talents, authenticity and sense of identity with her into the spotlight. “I feel like I have the responsibility to turn the narrative around for my people… I love that I represent myself as a person who is confident, for the most part, in my own skin—to walk out without hair—and to help be a role model for those who are struggling with alopecia. I love that I can be a Filipino woman and a Black woman on TV and represent someone with poise, grace and eloquence,” Cedrice says. “I really do see myself as a vessel: there is so much that I have to learn...and I choose to identify with someone who has been given gifts, a platform and opportunities to communicate with people, to have fun and to live my life unapologetically and inspire people through that.”

Grab Your Clubs! It’s Time to Par-Tee WRITTEN BY: KAYLIN WAIZINGER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: PARK HYATT AVIARA RESORT, GOLF CLUB & SPA ILLUSTRATIONS BY: VICENTE MARTÍ SOLAR
Perched above the Batiquitos Lagoon sits the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa, a sophisticated Spanish-colonial escape spanning across 200 acres. This luxury Carlsbad resort celebrated a grand reopening in October following an over $50 million renovation, debuting a variety of fresh dining concepts, two transformed pool areas, reimagined guest rooms and more. There’s no doubt—$50 million certainly buys a lot. But even before the property’s revival, the Park Hyatt Aviara’s Arnold Palmer-designed, 18-hole golf course stole the show. And let it be known: it still does. The Aviara Golf Club features a memorable layout of par 72 over 18 holes and is uniquely sculpted around rolling hillsides, lush greenery and distinctive bunker and water challenges. The course meanders through a
beautiful botanical garden with cascading waterfalls, native wildflowers and tiered rock formations. Take your eyes off the scenery for a hot sec and you’ve got yourself an exciting and challenging course with nearly 300 feet of elevation change! Like other Arnold Palmerdesigned courses, the Aviara Golf Club offers golfers a tough yet fair course to play on. The tree-lined fairways are near perfect with most having some slope, contour or undulation. Challenge yourself with a series of uphill and downhill shots into well-guarded greens or take a risk with the course’s several birdie opportunities! After the round, you and your crew can retreat to the resort’s two-story clubhouse with locker services, a bar lounge and the decadent Argyle Steakhouse with outdoor balcony seating. Golf novice or not, it doesn’t get much better than this.

SEASON’S GREETINGS WELCOME TO THE 112TH NEWPORT BEACH CHRISTMAS BOAT PARADE!
We are bringing the magic of the holidays to your home this season, with the 112th anniversary of the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade. Hailed by The New York Times as one of the nation’s top 10 holiday happenings, we are delighted to share our “Christmas card to the world” from Dec. 16-20 at 6:30 p.m. nightly. You’re invited to watch as Newport Harbor sparkles and shines during this merry celebration!
W
VIRTUAL VIEWING For the first time in its 112-year history, there will be an option to view the parade virtually, giving the world a front-row seat to the annual Southern California spectacular. The virtual viewing experience will take place on multiple platforms including web, social media and the city’s local broadcast channel NBTV and will run all five nights of the parade. The show will include the parade’s entirety: the Ring of Lights home competition, entertaining interviews with participants and spotlights on the Grand Marshal frontline heroes and local charities.
NOTES ON SAFETY Out of an abundance of caution and safety, organizers have canceled regularly scheduled events including the opening night event at Marina Park and opening and closing night fireworks. Guests should expect safety message signage 96 LOCALE MAGAZINE
To ensure a safe visit, please follow Orange County and state guidelines by physically distancing, wearing a mask and regularly washing your hands. The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade is hosted by the Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce—a dedicated group of members who provide support for the chamber’s special events. We would like to thank our presenting sponsors, Simple Green and Davey’s Locker as well as our community sponsors, the City of Newport Beach and Visit Newport Beach. Find more information on the Christmas Boat Parade and Ring of Lights at www. christmasboatparade.com and Chamber of Commerce happenings at www. newportbeach.com. A LOOK BACK AT THE HISTORY OF THE NEWPORT BEACH CHRISTMAS BOAT PARADE
DEC. 17, 2020 Newport Beach Fire Department The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade began at the turn of the century. John Scarpa, an Italian gondolier, and Joseph Beek, a developer of Beacon Bay, the Balboa Ferry Line and the principal force in the early development of Balboa Island, arrived in the Newport Harbor area over 100 years ago. These two men established what was then called the Tournament of Lights, an event that would continue for the next century and become a cherished tradition.

In 1946, the Newport Beach City employees had outfitted a barge during the holiday season and installed a lighted 98 LOCALE MAGAZINE
In later years, the Beek family came to the front again and provided one of their ferryboats for the floating Christmas tree celebration. Gradually, each year, other lighted boats fell in line behind the city employees’ floating tree. Soon the Tournament of Lights turned into a festive Christmas celebration for all to enjoy. Down the road, the Ring of Lights home decorating competition began and still serves as a colorful backdrop to the parade. Dozens of homes along the parade route feature over-the-top holiday decorations with new buildouts, moving displays and thousands of lights from roof to ground. Today the Tournament of Lights, now called the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, features as many as 100 boats. The parade is proudly hosted by the Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce and is hailed as “one of the top ten holiday happenings in the nation” by The New York Times. The parade is now the premiere event of the holiday season in Southern California.

In 1907, Scarpa began the tradition of lighting boats by taking a group of visitors from Pasadena across the bay in a gondola decorated with Japanese lanterns. One year later, on July 4, 1908, the first lighted boat parade took place. Scarpa, along with his fellow small boat operators, put together a loosely organized affair consisting of nine vessels. The parade, illuminated by Japanese lanterns, was led by Scarpa’s gondola and followed by eight canoes. Thus, Scarpa has been credited with creating the first lighted boat parade.

With the pandemic lasting longer than anyone expected, you could easily say “the times, they are a changin’.” It’s reassuring, though, to remember that humans are built to adapt. DINE AL FRESCO AT AVILA’S EL RANCHITO “We’ve adjusted our takeout process,” says Maribel Avila Ley, owner of Avila’s El Ranchito. “We’ve created a curbside pick-up area that allows for contactless takeout options.” One new feature for take out is liters of margaritas to go. Get Avila's quality craft margaritas to enjoy in the comfort and safety of your own home. Avila Ley says that many people are ordering mini burritos by the dozen to go and keeping them in the fridge or freezer to eat as leftovers. “They’re small, so they make an easy snack. Just toss them in the microwave or toaster oven, and they’re ready to go,” says Avila Ley. AVILA’S EL RANCHITO 2800 Newport Blvd Newport Beach, CA 92663 949.675.6855 www.avilaselranchito.com

Sereni-Tea HOW KIRRA LIFE IS BRINGING INNER PEACE TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND BEYOND—ONE SIP AT A TIME WRITTEN BY: JORDAN NISHKIAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY: COREY WILSON & VIVIAN KIM
HOMETOWN HEART
Each flavor is inspired by places from where the husbandand-wife duo is from, particularly Paige’s childhood in Hawaii and Clancy’s memories of Australia and South Africa.
Co-founded by power couple Jerrod Clancy and Amanda Li Paige, Kirra Life is a tea crafted from bright tastes, healthforward ingredients and a relaxing special ingredient—25 milligrams of CBD. The result? A line of beverages embodying flavors from the duo’s childhood memories that transports the drinker to a simpler, sunnier state of mind. Ironically, the brand, which is so focused on inner peace, was birthed from chaos. When Clancy, an Aussie transplant, resigned from his job in LA, it opened him up to seeking opportunities he was excited about—but he needed to move quickly before his visa expired. While some would scramble and settle, Clancy was patient and used his time to pursue his passions.

“I always say this brand is our baby in some sense—it’s like our relationship turned into a brand.” —Amanda Li Paige
By marrying his knowledge of CBD and the beverage industry with their love of tea, Clancy created a product that both he and Paige would want to drink themselves. “As far as delivery methods for CBD go, tea is what resonated the most with both of us—we both love drinking tea,” Clancy says. “And our hemp, in particular, is nanosized, which basically means that it’s been formulated to enter the body through your bloodstream instead of through your stomach.” This results in drinkers getting 95% of the CBD versus 70% from nonnanosized CBD. The pair’s keen eye for quality doesn’t end

with Kirra Life’s hemp extract; it’s also evident in the brand’s flavors and ingredients. The brand’s teas are only sourced from wholesalers in the US, and each ingredient is approved by Paige, who has experience in the wellness industry. “I always say this brand is our baby in some sense— it’s like our relationship turned into a brand,” Paige says. And what was born over the couple’s stovetop is more than a tea; it’s an experience. “When you drink this, we want you to have that moment of stillness no matter where you are,” Paige continues. “Let your mind be on vacation…have that moment of ease.”

Prior to officially launching in 2017, Bradley and Roxanne Reitler started a business making raw almond milk. “We had almond pulp left over, and we didn’t want to waste it. We tried making so many different things from it, then finally decided to make a raw cake with it,” Roxanne explains. The duo made a raw carrot cake after numerous concoctions that turned out delicious, and the idea for Meet the Source spiraled from there. Meet the Source is a small team of just four individuals, along with the co-founding husband-and-wife duo. Everything is handmade; everything is made to order. A lot of love and a lot of labor goes into making these treats. One bite and you’ll be wondering why you’ve been eating “regular” cakes, pies and desserts your whole life— whether you have food sensitivities or not. All desserts and treats are made with ingredients you can pronounce, real foods and the highest-quality ingredients found at your local market. “The almonds [come] from a farm up north. We sell Meet the Source at the farmers market every Saturday in Irvine, and [we] also get our fruit from there for our cakes,” says Roxanne. Meet the Source partners
The almond flour is, of course, made inhouse along with just four other natural ingredients to create the crust. The homemade filling is then poured over the crust to create a smooth consistency and then chilled in the refrigerator. After the cake is settled and ready to be served, it’s topped with their very own homemade coconut whipped cream! Whether you are looking for a weekend treat or something to bring to your friendsgiving this year, don’t wait, get your holiday orders in now. “We do require 72 hours on cakes, and especially during the holidays when it’s busy; we cut off orders two weeks before Thanksgiving.” All cakes can be ordered online. Next time you’re at your local coffee shop or market, you’ll most likely spot Meet the Source’s bliss balls which pair perfectly with any coffee drink. As far as looking ahead, this duo explains they are going to be in some larger retailers pretty soon, and customers can look forward to some different packaging that’s been in the works for over a year. Cakes will also soon be available to ship all over California! Whoever says you have to give up desserts certainly hasn’t tried Meet the Source. RESTORE YOUR YOUTHFUL GLOW • Liftique offers various options to combat the three signs of aging, which are sun damage, skin laxity and volume loss, according to Dr. Hakimi. “We devise a customized plan that addresses all three factors with you,” he adds.
2
THE ANTI-AGING VITAMIN A • Dr. Hakimi firmly believes in Retin-A, or retinoic acid, a derivative of vitamin A that helps skin cells reproduce at a faster rate for a youthful glow. “I can’t emphasize it enough: everybody should be on Retin-A for life,” he says.

Sunscreen, the Simple Secret • Dr. Hakimi strongly advises everyone to apply sunscreen every two hours. “It’s amazing what this basic skin care regimen will do,” he says. “The skin that emerges will be of a better quality than the one previously exposed to UV radiation and sun.”

Let’s face it: with the gyms closed and more time at home in front of the mirror, feeling flawless and youthful can be pretty difficult these days. Luckily, Newport Beach’s Liftique is offering an array of surgical and nonsurgical treatments for the face and body, so you can re-emerge looking and feeling better than before lockdown. Here to weigh in is Liftique’s boardcertified plastic surgeon and Chief Medical Director, Dr. Michael Hakimi, with five expert tips.
“When we came back after lockdown, we went overboard to ensure the safety of our patients and our staff.” —Dr. Hakimi Confidence Is Key • Unlike other botox and plastic surgery clinics, Liftique encourages clients to feel confident at the age they currently are. “The window for looking 20 years younger has passed. The goal is to look the best you can at the age you are,” Liftique Founder Meryl Kern explains.
4
TURN BACK TIME IN THE SUN • Liftique also offers laser treatments for those with residual sun damage, which is a favorite among Southern Californians. “We have a very strong IPL machine that is designed to remove sun spots; it’s a minor procedure with minimal down time,” says Dr. Hakimi.
5
SURGICAL PROCEDURES • Dr. Hakimi recommends surgery for women who either have more advanced skin looseness or those whose expectations may not be met with less invasive procedures. “I have a very frank and transparent conversation with patients to gauge which method is going to have a bigger ‘wow’ factor,” he says.

Garrett Weston is a household name in the sport of selling homes. With over $1 billion in residential transactions, you can say this guy really knows how to go big and get homes. But he’s more than just a real estate guru; he is a persona, a brand—he is, Mr. Weston.
This guy brings the bread and the butter to the table. He is white-glove service from start to finish. No task is too small or too mundane for Mr. Weston. He eats, breathes and sleeps real estate and has perfected his craft after nearly two decades in an industry that is saturated with talent—but none quite like his. And his clients love to use him as a “compass” when considering their next real estate transaction.
The most difficult house to sell to date? •His own farmhouse contemporary he painstakingly designed and had built, only to get a knock on the door from someone asking to buy the property.
T
Having a job at 12 and work permit at 15, Weston has always been a “rise and grind” kind of guy. Even in high school, he was a teen by day and budding businessman by night—working a full-time job that helped him find his footing in the real estate world. Weston is someone who oozes passion, and his gusto is contagious. And while many agents in the business delegate duties to their team, as a self-made man, Mr. 140 LOCALE MAGAZINE
“Make the connection to an emotion. Emotion drives price.” —GARRETT WESTON
“I pride myself in getting back to people right away. My goal is to answer every call, and if I can’t pick up, my finger is on the trigger to shoot a text...” —GARRETT WESTON
Weston finds satisfaction in being a part of the process. “I take pride in working in the business as well as on the business,” he says. “I’m there every step of the way.” And he has taken that saying to heart. “I built the business. I built a farm. I built a household name,” says Mr. Weston. Mr. Weston always goes the extra mile (or three), quite literally. He starts each day with one of his custom preselected coffee drinks from a touch screen coffee/espresso maker. Then he completes a rigorous workout with his personal trainer or a 3 mile walk. “It’s so good for the mind and body to keep moving,” he says. And while each day varies, you can assure he is always reachable at any given moment. “I pride myself on getting back to people right away. My goal is to answer every call, and if I can’t pick up, my finger is on the trigger to shoot a text and call back as soon as I can,” says Weston. In a day and age where people expect you to be available on demand, it seems only natural that the never-ending nature of his business can get exhausting—but not for Mr. Weston. He still has the spirit of that 18-year-old kid who spent hours handing out market update flyers across the city and placing American flags in the front yards of his farm area from sunup to sundown. And even though he promises white-glove service, Weston is never afraid to get his hands a little dirty for the sake of a sale. That’s what you get with Mr. Weston, a veteran real estate agent who knows the roots of the business because he truly started at the bottom and worked his way up. Unlike his larger-than-life personality, Weston takes a sort of “soft sale” approach to his business, letting his past work speak for him. He understands that a home is an intimately personal environment and to allow an agent into your sacred space is a huge deal for most
people. You want someone who cares, who really sees everything from the handprints in the concrete to the tally marks on the doorframe. Mr. Weston stages the house in a way that highlights its key features, educates himself on every nook and cranny of the home and creates an ambiance that allows potential buyers to really see the space for what it is and what it can be. “Make the connection to an emotion. Emotion drives price,” explains Weston. When it comes to creating an atmosphere, there is nobody who knows how to set the tone better. “Play to your demographic,” he says, meaning know who this house is likely being marketed towards and create elements in the home that reflect that target audience. There are so many things that are often overlooked when setting up a private showing. All of the senses should be incorporated when a potential buyer is sizing up a spot, and Mr. Weston acts as your personal concierge to guide you through a home. “There’s an art to being informative and offering up some key points but not being overbearing and not hovering over people,” Weston adds. And this is clearly an art he has perfected with 40-60 transactions per year and countless accolades. He has been involved in record-setting transactions, including the sale of the most expensive residences in several Orange County communities. Weston treats every showing, every interaction and every first meeting like an audition. The goal is to be unforgettable. But, like all great characters, he eventually has to kick off his loafers, put away his suit and tie and get some shut-eye so he can do it all again the next day. Exit, Mr. Weston. Speak the Language •Most of us know how to say the basic Spanish greetings. If you want to learn more about the Mexican culture, however, Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal offers a Spanish Baja Cultural Immersion package. Participate in three 90-minute Spanish classes and learn about Mexican traditions! Educational Support •The resort is bringing virtual educational programming to guests by partnering with national tutoring service, TakeLessons. My wife and I love adventure, travel and discovering new places and cultures. Fortunately, we have visited dozens of countries around the globe over the past decade and typically spend our free time planning our next escape. I found myself wondering several times over the past six months if we would ever travel again; it was a constant source of consternation. The decision to travel, once we were able to, did not come easy. We weighed numerous factors, including the flight’s length, availability of direct flights and how safe we would feel once we arrived. Over the years, Mexico has been our most frequent destination. We decided to make Cabo San Lucas the destination for our first vacation since the pandemic began for a few different reasons: the short (two-hour) direct flight, the fact that we had both been learning Spanish and—mostly—our love for the food, culture and people of Mexico. From the moment we landed until the time we left, we knew we had made the right decision. We arrived home feeling safe, rested and ready to plan our next excursion.

Test Your Courage •Looking to make the most of your trip? The resort offers a variety of curated experiences, such as swim classes with a whale shark, snorkeling with a sea lion and surf lessons!
5 MUST-TRY RESTAURANTS: El Farallon •Enjoy a tasting flight of champagne paired with sea salts from the cliffside Champagne Bar. Dig into a romantic five-course dinner while watching the sky change colors and listening to the waves crash below.
Acre •A full hour’s drive north and off a mile-long dirt road, we found Acre—a beautiful property lined with treehouses, rescued animals and modern bohemian elegance.
SUR Beach House •SUR serves the best sushi we have ever had. There is a beach club where you can rent chairs and swim with beautiful views of the Arch of Cabo San Lucas.
Don Manuel’s •The main restaurant at Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal has amazing views, great food and entertaining live music at night. A “mesero” made sure to stop at our table each time we dined to teach us a few Spanish words! but nothing we saw looked like the place we would find ourselves at: our magnificent resort.
We rented a car when we landed and made the 45-minute drive south through the desert to Downtown Cabo San Lucas. We had visited Cabo San Lucas many times before but had never stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, where we would be staying for the next five nights. As we listened to our navigation, we were guided on a series of lefts and rights that took us through the heart of downtown. There were casinos and nightclubs (mostly closed) along with restaurants (mostly open),
W
We arrived at the resort’s gate and saw nothing but a mountain. Where was the hotel? The guard checked his list, found our name and instructed us to drive through the mountain. We drove hundreds of yards through a tunnel that was lit by dozens of chandeliers. It cut straight through the mountain, leaving the city noises behind and transporting us to a side of Cabo we did not know existed. In front of us was 24 acres of beachfront property framed by the Pacific’s beautifully blue waters. We had arrived.
Talay •This tiny Thai food trailer might seem out of place in a posh resort like the Montage Los Cabos, but sitting at picnic tables under the lights was an ideal date night.

We had booked the Estrella Suite on the fourth floor at Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal. Before we could checkin, we secured our masks, had our temperatures checked and then were escorted to our room, which was sealed with a notice that it had been cleaned properly according to the Hilton CleanStay guidelines. Our host made sure to point out (without touching a thing) that all surfaces had been cleaned—from the TV remote to the light switches—immediately reassuring our safety and health.
“We left feeling stressed and returned feeling blessed.”
The Estrella Suite has a living room, dining room, bedroom, an enormous bathroom with a soaking tub and a private dip pool. I knew by looking at my wife that she was thinking what I was thinking: we may not have to leave our room at all. Adding to this sentiment was the fact that they offered room service breakfast in the pool on a floating raft, supplied a new bottle of tequila each day, and you could see the waves breaking on the sand from every corner of our suite. We left feeling stressed and returned feeling blessed. After six months of solitude, the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal proved to be exactly what we needed. We felt safe during our entire trip, cared for by the staff and cannot wait to return. We are so happy to feel safe traveling again.

Comprised of Creativity
WORTH THE SHOT • Benoit’s incredible aerial gallery photography is mainly done with helicopters. Shooting out of a doorless helicopter with his camera enables him to get incredible shots of places like New York City and the beaches of California on a huge scale.
TURNS OUT, THIS REAL ESTATE AGENT AND INVESTOR HAS A CREATIVE SIDE WRITTEN BY: ERICA JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHED BY: JOHN GLOVER Creative people often need multiple outlets to fully express themselves, and Benjamin Paul Benoit is one of those people. After a successful career as a print model, Benoit decided to step behind the camera. Success came quickly with commercial print work, doing headshots for other models and actors along with real estate and lifestyle photography. Yet even with all that success, it wasn’t long before another passion would take hold—being a real estate agent and investor; and why not? When you’re on a roll, you don’t want to lose momentum!
C
Using his photography earnings, Benoit started investing in real estate and then decided to get his license, so he could help others have a piece of the market. Benoit explains, “I’ve always known that I would eventually get into real estate. I like to believe that buying, selling and investing in real estate is my career, while photography is my therapy.” Even though the real estate game is fairly new in comparison, Benoit has already scored success with
properties in the Belmont Shores area and recently purchased a Spanish-style duplex to renovate and flip. “I love helping people buy and sell properties while also investing in the market for myself. I plan to own large, multifamily units at some point.”
If you want to get the full effect, take a stroll around the Riley Arts Gallery in Manhattan Beach to check out Benoit’s limited-edition large prints. If you’re looking to buy, sell or invest in the OC market and need an agent with a discerning eye, Benoit is the perfect fit. To purchase prints or set up a photoshoot, you can contact Benoit at www. benjaminpaulgallery.com or visit Riley Arts Gallery in Manhattan Beach.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN • Modeling for commercial print ads for clients like Target, Michelob, Levi’s and johnnie-O was indeed lucrative, Benjamin admits. “The work never slowed down, but I knew it would end eventually; that’s why I turned to photography, and soon, my agent was using me to shoot.”
Being able to enjoy the best of both creative worlds is something most people only dream about, but Benoit’s approach is simple: “I’ve always thought that finding a hobby that makes money is the best gift that you can give yourself. That’s why I will always continue to do photography for the rest of my life, regardless of how busy my real estate career gets.”
Benjamin Paul Benoit Real Estate Investor/ Agent and Photographer
BIG DREAMS • Owning a gallery of his own is a longterm goal for Benjamin. “A gallery of my own in a great location is the big goal—a place where I could feature my own work [and] also top creatives from around the world.”
