Once a year, the Fourth of July comes around and most people look forward to a day of barbecues, fireworks and a whole lot of patriotism. But our readers and devotees know that the best way to celebrate Independence Day is by also going to the pre-party July 3rd, aka LOCALE Magazine’s Annual Red, White and Luau. This year, all hands were on deck as the number of attendees reached capacity at the stunning Paséa Hotel & Spa in Huntington Beach. They reveled in the sunshine as they ate bites from tons of

local restaurants in the area. Each spot showed off the best of their menus in the hopes to win the custom-designed trophy, with partygoers voting OLA Mexican Kitchen as their winner. But what is excellent fare without something equally appealing to wash it down? Sailor Jerry Mai Tais, Hendrick’s Gin Martinis and Lapu Lapus crafted by the Royal Hawaiian gave sippers some real Hawaiian flavor. The liquid courage was much appreciated, as everyone swayed to live music from Bambaata Marley, Cali Conscious and an exceptional performance by the Hālau Hula a Kawika lāua ʻo Leinani Hula and Fire Dancers. See you next year!

THAT’S A WRAP!

®

EDITOR'S NOTE There’s something about the holiday season that gets me thinking about home. Thanks to a number of house moves (hello U-Haul, my BFF) and trips in and out of the country, I’ve learned that home isn’t so much one specific place, but a connection to who and what you love most—be it through food, decor or location. In this issue, I invite you to reconnect to what makes you feel most at home. You’ll find a good dose of inspiration in our Escape Experts (pg. 91); six design pros who have the key to giving any space a personalized touch. From a pollinator-garden designer to an abstract artist, we seriously covered it all. And when your family comes to visit, our Escape Guide (pg. 103) will be your go-to handbook for where to take them to eat, shop and hangout in SoCal so everyone’s happy—even your artsy Aunt Carole. Plus, our cover stars, Tony and October Gonzalez, are sharing

what they’ve learned about making family time a priority in between their hectic business and travel schedules (pg. 202). Post-NFL life looks pretty sweet on them. Is home all about food to you? It is for Chef Ryan Garlitos in our Meals Deconstructed (pg. 165). Get the breakdown on the dish that reminds him most of his childhood and remains his restaurant’s top seller. If you’re raring to get started on your holiday shopping, our Gift Guide (pg. 175) has everything you need for every person in your life, including an insanely cool splurge page for when you want to treat yourself (it is the season of giving after all). So whether you’re jet-setting off for a well-earned vacay or looking to revamp your surroundings before family arrives, I hope this issue is one that you’ll always keep close on hand for lastminute inspo, I know it will be for me. Happy Holidays.

Having never been to the Warwick before, I was in awe of the moody glitz and glam decor of the lounge. From the blue velvet curtain and dark green walls to the black and gold accents throughout their lower level, I knew it was the perfect place to photograph Tony and October Gonzalez, who I had yet to meet.

H

When I walked upstairs, October, lovingly referred to as ‘Tobie,’ was sitting in a chair as hair and makeup artist Heather Balaam enhanced her natural beauty, and stylist Kaylee Jackson was excitedly hanging each look up on the rack, all while photographer Wil Cohen continued to test his lighting downstairs. Everything we heard about Tony and Tobie being genuine, allaround great individuals and a real power couple was proving true with each conversation. It was only solidified when Tony decided I needed a nickname

he could call me, deciding that ‘K-Lab’ fit me best. Throughout the photoshoot, everyone watched them laugh in between poses, and we couldn’t stop commenting on how together, these two radiate. Tony and Tobie are simply, Tony and Tobie. Talking to them didn’t feel like an interview, it felt like I was getting advice on life. There’s a passion that flows from their voices when they talk about who and what they love—family, people and traveling. Their way of viewing the world is contagious. It’s filled with positivity and a strong sense of adventure no matter where they are or who they’re surrounded by, an outlook we can all use. After wrapping the photoshoot, I said goodbye to Tony and Tobie and walked out of the Warwick, leaving with a sweet sense of familiarity of the place and people I had not known just two hours before.

ESCAPE The ARCHITECT

CHRISTOPHER BRANDON Credentials: President, Brandon Architects, Inc. BEST FOOT FORWARD • “We really pride ourselves on being client focused. We get to know the client, that person’s background, likes and dislikes, and their vision.”

AWARD WINNER • One of Brandon’s favorite projects is Acacia in Corona Del Mar, a contemporary duplex featuring natural light, lots of glass and pockets of exterior space that won design awards and was featured in The Wall Street Journal. DYNAMIC DUO • Brandon runs the firm alongside his wife, Kaley, who handles the business side of things.

Sometimes your greatest challenge is actually your greatest blessing. Christopher Brandon took a chance on creating his dream firm after the 2008 recession took its toll on his career. After starting out small, Brandon is now at the top of one of the most prestigious architectural firms in Orange County. Brandon Architects, Inc. is a youthful collection of creative, enthusiastic minds. With the mantra of “smart design leads to better living,” Brandon admits, “Every project is different and every day is different. Orange County is the ideal place to be.”

KARLIN MEEHAN STUDIOS The Spurgeon Building, 4th Floor 206 W 4th St Santa Ana, CA 92701 www.karlinmeehanstudios.com

The ABSTRACT ARTIST

Credentials: Founder and Artist, Karlin Meehan Studios PAYING IT FORWARD • “I never had a woman mentor growing up. I want to inspire and help others to believe that they can do it too.”

BIGGER IS BETTER • Meehan’s favorite project was a special piece commissioned by lululemon at South Coast Plaza. “It was such a marker in my career and it showed me that I can dream bigger.”

Karlin Meehan, who grew up in Newport Beach, was encouraged by her parents to “Be the best you.” Meehan turned from a career in law to pursue her true love: art. “I realized that fearbased beliefs about not being able to make money as an artist were keeping me from my dream.” Today, Karlin Meehan Studios is focused on unique, colorful, abstract pieces. “Abstract art is taking on a life of its own, you never get bored.” The process of creating custom paintings for her clients is what Meehan truly enjoys. “I’m a happy person naturally, and I enjoy being able to work with people to get a piece of joy in their space.” 92 LOCALE MAGAZINE

HISTORY IN THE MAKING • The Spurgeon Building was once owned in part by Meehan’s father. Built in 1913, it was one of the first office buildings in Santa Ana and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The ORGANIZER

SARA BARBA Credentials: Founder, XOXOrganizing and Right Hand Gal HELPING OUT MOM • Barba started Right Hand Gal after realizing that many of her clients needed help beyond organizing a space. “Moms have to do 100 things per day. If we can put 50 of those things on our plate, she will be able to handle the rest.”

XOXORGANIZING AND RIGHT HAND GAL 714.333.5683 www.xoxorganizing.com Photoshoot Location: JONATHONS COASTAL LIVING 18305 Euclid St Fountain Valley, CA 92708 714.434.0110 www.jonathonsdesign.com

DOWNSIZE FOR HAPPINESS • One of Barba’s favorite projects was a bathroom that desperately needed help. “We took it down to only the bare essentials. It worked perfectly and made her life so much easier.”

FAMILY TIES • Entrepreneurship is in the blood. Barba’s family has owned and operated a Persian bakery in Southern California for many years.

The child of Iranian immigrants, Sara Barba firmly believes that their circumstances growing up led her to where she is today. “We lived in a one-bedroom apartment with very little space. I couldn’t leave my things all over the place, so I had to be very efficient and organized with everything that I had.” Cut to seven successful years later, Barba has a thriving business, many grateful and devoted clients, and has recently expanded with Right Hand Gal personal assistants. “It’s been a total miracle. I love what I do and I have clients [who] are supportive and encouraging. I love helping people change their daily lives from chaos to functional.”

The GREEN THUMB

ROBIN JONES Credentials: Lead Garden Girl and Beekeeper FOR A GOOD CAUSE • Jones’ favorite project is working with Camp Pendleton, where she’s designing a garden and apiary, and teaching them about beekeeping.

UN-BEE-LIEVABLE • According to Jones, the importance of bees cannot be underestimated. “Honey bees pollinate 70 percent of our food crops. Supporting them is so critical to the ecosystem and our future.”

BEE SAFE • Jones used to be deathly allergic to bees, but using Venom Immunity Therapy (VIT) from an allergist resolved the allergy and made her arthritis vanish.

With a family legacy of farmers, including a beekeeping great-grandmother, Robin Jones made the decision to leave a successful career in advertising to reconnect with her roots. “It seemed like such a natural fit with the gardening and a lovely way to honor her memory,” Jones says. Now, she’s become a successful culinary gardener, apiary designer and beekeeper in Southern California, working with people to spread education and beauty with every project. Jones not only designs gardens for residential clients, but also with chefs, resorts and corporations. The results are not only thrilling for them, but she truly enjoys sharing knowledge on growing your own food. “It’s wonderful how amazingly flavorful fresh-grown food tastes,” she says. “I am always as excited as my clients for their first harvest.”

The INTERIOR DESIGNER

KEVIN E. SMITH Credentials: Founder and Principal Designer, Details a Design Firm BRINGING THE OUTSIDE IN • “I always find inspiration with the home and the client during the design process. I am also inspired by the ocean, nature and the views.”

PLAYING FAVORITES • “We did a project in Newport Beach by Fashion Island which had clean, modern lines and a minimalist feel. It was a lot of fun, challenging and turned out great.”

COOL FOR SCHOOL • When Smith came to California from the Midwest, he attended Interior Designers Institute in Newport Beach and has never looked back.

Growing up in the Midwest, Kevin E. Smith had no idea he would become one of Orange County’s most sought-after interior designers. “I came to design later in life, but once I realized it was my passion, I grabbed it by the horns.” Now at the height of Details a Design Firm, Smith has been designing dream homes in OC for the last 20 years. “There are so many different styles of homes and the opportunities are endless,” said Smith. “We take the whole envelope, right to the property line. We think about the exterior as much as the interior so that everything is enhanced and reflects who you are.”

The VINTAGE HUNTER

JENI MAUS Credentials: Owner and Designer, The Found Shop

FLEA FINDS • Maus enjoys shopping in Europe, but also finds great pieces at flea markets in Massachusetts and Texas.

FAVORITE FINDS • One of Maus’ favorite European pieces is a large, French farm table that she uses for a desk/design table. “For a while, it was part of the inventory for the rental side, but I just loved it so much that I decided I needed to see it every day.”

INSPIRATIONAL MOMENTS • “My favorite thing is to sit down and take my time looking at coffee table books and magazines on design. It always inspires me and opens my eyes to new ideas.”

After being at the helm of Found Vintage Rentals for over eight years, Jeni Maus knew that the next step had to be a retail space featuring all the gorgeous vintage pieces that she scours the globe to find. “The Found Shop is a lifestyle store—you can find everything from smalls starting at around $5, all the way up to high-end, vintage furniture.” Maus loves being able to travel to Europe to find the perfect pieces. While the rental division of The Found Shop is still flourishing, there is now another location in Northern California. Maus sees the store as “a design and creativity outlet. Fullerton is a great community and we knew it was the perfect place to be.”

Justice for All MEET THE NONPROFIT MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OC’S MOST VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES WRITTEN BY: JORDAN SMITH PHOTOGRAPHED BY: AKIN ODEBUNMI

William Wise and Brooke Weitzman founded the Elder Law and Disability Rights Center, a nonprofit firm that represents vulnerable or homeless people in OC, with the goal of filling a need in the community. Since their opening a year and a half ago, their mission is blossoming into much more— ensuring all people can maintain stability and to live with dignity. Both Weitzman and Wise had experience working for traditional free legal services. However, they found that they were turning people away from the free services for a variety of reasons and that those people also were not able to afford a traditional lawyer. The Elder Law and Disability Rights Center, which offers legal services on a sliding scale, was founded as a way to bridge the gap between often unaffordable private legal services and traditional free legal services. Services that the ELDR Center provides vary based on a client’s need. This is because Elder Law provides service for an array of legal issues, and often looks at a group of people rather than a specific issue. “We want to address the gap in services that people couldn’t get,

140

and fill the justice gap to ensure all people have access to living with dignity,” Wise says. The ELDR Center has been involved in lawsuits involving homeless people, including the displacement of homeless people near the riverbed in Anaheim. “We want to reshape how Orange County talks about homelessness and shift the conversation to talk about what we are going to do about the housing crisis,” Weitzman says. As a nonprofit with no government funding, it is a unique model but one that allows them to tap into the private market and provide a variety of services. The fees they charge are a way to meet their own expenses. They are also able to coordinate with many providers in the area and are very active in the Orange County Bar Association. With this unique model of sliding scale services in Orange County, Wise and Weitzman hope that they can inspire others to do the same. “There is an obligation and responsibility of being a lawyer, and that comes with making the world better,” Weitzman says.

TWIST ON TRADITION “The sweet potato is one of the main seasonal vegetables in the fall, and I gave the sweet potato a twist by making it two ways: sweet potato skin strips for a nice crunch to the palate and I also pureed the sweet potato.”

THE PROCESS “The pork belly is fresh from a local butcher, I oven roast it and flash fry it so it's crispy on the outside and juicy inside. The pork belly chicharron is layed on the sweet potato puree; I top it with fresh arugula, queso fresco, house-made pickled red onions and the crispy sweet potato skins.”

SWEET AND S AV O RY “The combination of savory, with the bite of onion and lime, makes this a unique and wellrounded dish.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 151

Sip on the Navy Grog, a blend of black Jamaican rum, 151 demerara rum, pimento dram, grapefruit juice, lime juice, and black and white syrup. “The inspiration for the Navy Grog comes from classic tiki cocktail lore,” says Norton. “Navy Grog was a refreshment for British sailors in the 1700s. Ours is a spin on the tiki recipes that evolved through the ‘50s and ‘60s.” Or try the Royal Blue Hawaiian, a tropical concoction of coconut Hawaiian rum, blue curaçao, Caribbean pineapple liqueur, lemon juice and coconut syrup. “The Royal Blue Hawaiian is all about putting bright, tropical flavors into a visuallyappealing drink that says, ‘Welcome to the islands!’” says Norton. Family Favorites • Chef Garlitos especially loves the dinuguan (a pork blood stew) that his father cooks and the pinakbet (a dish where vegetables are cooked in a shrimp sauce) that his grandma made. Winner Winner, Filipino Dinner • Chef Garlitos held a monthly pop-up dinner featuring a tasting menu of modern Filipino food just for fun. He never intended to do more than one, but the inaugural success led him to continue putting on more and more.

After cooking the sauce and infusing these flavors seamlessly, it is strained and pureed into a barbecue sauce-like consistency. He picked pork over other meat because it was his favorite adobo version growing up. “I think pork, especially pork belly, is something that lends itself to the adobo flavor,” says Garlitos. “Adobo is very strong, and there’s a lot of vinegar, a lot of soy sauce and a lot of pungent aromatics.” To accompany the strong taste and fragrant aroma, he adds mung beans and braised greens with turnips and green onions sprinkled on the top. “The idea was to distill the flavor of adobo to a component of the dish, but also to put things around it that complement it,” says Garlitos. The starchy mung beans add a distinct flavor, especially when they coat the pork. He was inspired to include the legumes with the adobo as his family would serve the mung beans and adobo dishes side by side. “And the natural thing to do when you’re eating at the table, especially if you were like me. I was a very curious eater, I would literally mix everything together,” says Garlitos.

Practice Makes Perfect • Chef Garlitos started cooking professionally at 23. He went to culinary school, but most of his training was informal as he learned more about cooking by teaching himself and cooking in kitchens under different chefs. Native Knowledge • The full-service, full-bar, sit-down restaurant opened in 2016 and was named after his grandmother, Irenia.

Filipino food has become an emerging culinary trend as more dining connoisseurs are interested in tasting the cuisine from this Southeast Asian nation. Here in Orange County, Chef Ryan Garlitos creates modern Filipino food at his Santa Ana restaurant, Irenia. As an OC native and Filipino-American, he showcases a culinary interpretation of his culture that reflects the influences of his heritage, Southern California upbringing and the restaurant industry. Instilled with traditions and taste memories, Chef Garlitos demonstrates the intricate ways they combine throughout the Irenia menu, but most notably with his pork adobo.

F

166 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Adobo is a popular, staple meal of the Philippines which consists of meat (typically chicken, pork or fish) marinated and cooked in a sauce usually made from vinegar, soy sauce and garlic. The dish is unique because there are many regional variations and each cook includes different ingredients and cooking methods to create their adobo. “The more you kind of delve into Filipino food, regionality and history, it varies so much depending on what island you came from,” says Garlitos. “You grow up and that’s the version that you know, and I feel like everyone grows up that [way].” With such a diverse dish, adobo was the perfect opportunity for Garlitos to share his version with the world. Chef Garlitos’ adobo is braised pork belly in adobo au jus with ginisang mung beans and braised turnips on the side. The pork is slow-roasted and seared in a pan, so the meat is crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The cooked pork is then covered with a scrumptious adobo sauce, the foundation of which is a flavorful combination of vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, bay leaves and peppercorns. “It’s all the same things that go into your normal adobo braise, but the way we make it is kind of different,” remarks Garlitos.

Similarly, the use of braised greens were inspired by past experiences where his family would mix vegetables such as bitter melon leaves, mustard greens and spinach in with the mung beans. Since Irenia is a restaurant that serves “seasonally-influenced, Filipinoinspired cuisine,” they utilize the greens, which add bitterness to the dish, but vary them with the season. In the past, they’ve used Chinese mustard greens, American mustard greens, Yu Choy and radishes from Los Angeles and Orange County farmers markets in the adobo. “For us, that’s an opportunity to incorporate [vegetables] into a dish that goes to [the] table that also adds a different layer of flavor [and is] dynamic,” notes Garlitos. On top of all this flavor is more texture, as Garlitos includes roasted, crispy green onions as well as turnips and radishes that are braised in a vegetable stock and roasted to caramelize. Since adobo is not a Filipino stew, Garlitos chose his ingredients carefully to ensure that each part contributes to an overall delicious dish. “I wanted to do one that was kind of true to what I grew up eating and that goes along with the food that we do,” says Garlitos. The adobo, served family-style, is best enjoyed with a Filipino drink from the bar and in the company of friends and family. “Food is memory, food is family,” says Sarah Mosqueda, Irenia’s Head of Operations. Irenia displays this concept significantly through the family-style menu and restaurant decor; the walls infuse echoes of the past with elements of the present through decorations of Filipino baskets, artwork of globes, a neon Irenia sign and photos of grandma Irenia. Like the adobo, the restaurant pays homage to Garlitos’ roots while also looking towards the present.

The world is full of the fantastic and the unexpected—things we are simply amazed by, and things we are amazed by due to its simplicity. In the culinary world, we sometimes equate the quality of something due to the complexity of its construction, but that is not always the case. Sometimes the deciding factor of the most delectable food we eat is its quality; where the truth is in its details.

T

When it comes to hot sauce, the quality of your ingredients is the only thing that matters. To separate yourself from the competition, you have to put your best foot forward. Enter TRUFF: the only sauce you’ll ever need, and the subject of your dreams at night. Based out of Huntington Beach, the sauce was developed by co-founders Nick Aljuni and Nick Guillen through countless hours of trial and error over the course of a few years. "We had played with 200-300 renditions of the sauce,” said Guillen. “But at one 168 LOCALE MAGAZINE

point we thought ‘less is more,’ and we really wanted to let each ingredients speak for itself." Created using a masterful blend of chili peppers, agave nectar and black truffle oil, TRUFF just might be the most luxurious hot sauce on the market right now. Are you curious yet? To put it simply, this sauce is as elevated as they come. It’s everything you could want in your favorite hot sauce, with an unexpected decadence. The chili peppers demonstrate the perfect amount of heat, while the truffle oil and organic agave nectar add a bit of sweetness and aroma to round out your experience. The moment you twist the geometric truffle-shaped cap off the bottle, your senses will immediately be entangled by the decadent aroma, followed by the tapered rush of spices. If you aren’t immediately raptured in by its fragrance, the taste will surely lasso you in.

More, More, More • Despite it’s savory elegance, TRUFF proves to be quite a versatile hot sauce that can be used to elevate salmon, rice bowls and bloody marys.

COME FULL CIRCLE WITH NEW, LOCAL FASHION LABEL KENYONTE DYER

WRITTEN BY: SABRINA AZADI PHOTOGRAPHY BY: AKIN ODEBUNMI

As far back as he can remember DeYoung Williams was influenced by fashion. But it was his combined love of graffiti art and tees that was his initial calling. What started as sketches for T-shirts led to several partnerships that has now, years later, guided him into his latest venture, his clothing label Kenyonte Dyer, named after his late brother. And this October his collection—designed for both men and women—will be showcased at LA Fashion Week. “It’s the first time I’m going as an independent, and I’m really excited. LA Fashion week has a lot of diversity. There are a lot of designers that are really working hard to show their art. And to me, fashion is art and not just a popularity contest,” says Williams.

A

But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for him. His brother’s untimely death, a result of a minor surgery that went wrong, brought Williams’ life to a complete halt. “That was a big event in my life; it changed everything. None of this would have happened if that didn’t happen, which is ironic. But it made me realize if I’m still here then I can overcome anything,” says Williams. Since then, it’s

given him a sense of urgency to strive for what he wants. This continues to be his source of motivation for his clothing line. With jobs designing for other brands and even a stint at law school, he realized he needed to go back to doing what he loves best—fashion and design. Although he hasn’t been formally trained, he thinks of it as a blessing. “When you go to school you’re taught a basis, when you’re self-taught it’s sink or swim, so sometimes you advance a lot further,” says Williams. Inspired by the surf and skateboarding culture prevalent in OC, with its unique coastal style mixed with the diversity he’s exposed to in LA, gives him a lot of creativity to pull from. “It’s this coastal region that all these brands like Volcom, Roxy and Hurley came from. People take these brands here and make it their own. Where else would you see someone mixing Vans with Chanel?” says Williams. Music has had a role to play too, as listening to the rock band A Perfect Circle has inspired his latest show. And for his clothing line, his ultimate goal is to bring together all of these influences and create something contemporary and meaningful—one thread at a time.

Living Like a Local • “I love it here [in Newport Beach]. This is my oasis. I am in LA a lot, but it’s not home to me. Newport and Laguna feel like home. Every day I’m inspired by what I see.” Native Knowledge • Williams’ favorite place to surf in OC is Blackies.

If their eyes didn’t have to be fixed toward the camera during the photoshoot, they were on each other. They genuinely enjoy being together, and you can tell. Whether it’s the way they look at one another, how they play off of each other during conversation or the way they joke back and forth, former NFL superstar and Hall of Fame candidate Tony Gonzalez and his wife, former Co-Host on “Beat Shazam,” October (Tobie) Gonzalez, are enjoying being in and with every moment, place and person they come in contact with. Eleven years and four kids later, Tony and Tobie continue to stay rooted in the same things they have been since they first met in 2003: quality time with each other, family and friends, whether at home or across the world.

While spending time as a family has always been a priority and something that happened consistently even during Tony’s 17-season-long football career, the end of his playing days meant more time together, which is something they say they feel lucky and thankful for.

W

“We’re in a very blessed situation where Tony only works during the football season right now and a little bit during the regular season, so unlike a lot of parents out there, we get a lot of extra time with our kids, so we take advantage of that,” Tobie says. “We don’t take it for granted. We enjoy it. We love being together and it doesn’t feel like work or like we have to make an effort because it’s something we love to do. It’s just part of our routine.” Tony and Tobie share that for them, the best way to spend time together is through traveling because of the way it enlightens and enhances a person’s character and life. For Tony, he learned this at a young age during his Clark Griswold-like road trips with his father, driving to the East Coast and stopping everywhere along the way. “What I learned along the way is how there’s a lot of character [growth] in being a foreigner. Even though I’m still in America, I’m different in somebody else’s city or town, and so I think that it’s great character [growth] for children and adults.” Tony says. “It’s great for not just me, but for the kids, too, and for their well-being.” The now Fox Sports NFL Pregame Show Analyst looked to his wife, and she complimented her husband’s desires for their family and continued to talk about how much emphasis they put on

how they raise their children, highlighting the importance of exposing their family to different cultures outside of their own. “It was a huge concern for us moving from Orange County to Beverly Hills and raising our kids around so much money and privilege,” Tobie shares. “All of those things that our kids [are] subjected to, you want to balance that out with showing them some culture, teaching them how to respect people who come from all different walks of life,” she says. “I think traveling has really gifted them with that knowledge and I remind them every day that it is a gift to be able to experience new things and see new places.” For Tony and Tobie, they know the world is a big place and that traveling can do wonders when someone gets to experience people from all different walks of life, who have different religions, practices, culture and values. “That’s the beauty of traveling and the kids get to see it,” adds Tony. “We’re passionate about traveling and making that part of our experience.” Tony recalls his favorite vacation so far, their most recent family trip to attend Mindvalley U, a yearly conference held in a different city around the world. This year, the month-long event took place in Tallinn, Estonia. During the event, they attended lectures on everything from entrepreneurship and emotional intelligence to classes on leadership and what it means to be a feminist. Tony and Tobie said they find this type of education priceless since they feel strongly about customizing their children’s education through homeschooling and want to broaden their minds and create a love for learning. “We were out there learning something, but also, in the afternoon and at night we were all together

having lunch and dinner in this beautiful medieval town and that just made it magical for me,” Tony says. “I just love that we were doing breakfast, lunch and dinner together, but during the day we went our own separate ways. We’re learning something but also getting good quality time together.” Naturally, his gaze fixes toward Tobie as he ends his sentence and she picks up where he left off, saying, “What makes it special is when you’re out of the country, you don’t have a lot of distractions like your friends or [the children’s] friends, activities, work and all of these different things that are pulling at you. When sharing a hotel room with your kids and you’re really discussing things with the people that you love the most—you’re just focused on each other.” Even though traveling is their favorite thing to do together as a family, Tony, Tobie and the children love to spend time with each other and close friends and family while they’re home, sometimes having people over five days out of the week. They’re real ‘people people,’ as Tobie says. “We believe in community,” Tony starts to explain.

E

“Right,” Tobie chimes in. “It takes a village, and we’ve created our own village. It’s just a huge community of family and friends who are basically our family that we’re surrounded by all the time. We’re very social people. We’re very open door policy, very ‘everyone come over to our house.’” Tony and Tobie’s hospitality goes far beyond their front door; it stretches through the cities of Huntington Beach, Los Angeles and beyond. Knowing how fortunate they are to spend time together as a family and have a strong hand in their children’s education, they aspire to help those who don’t have the same opportunities. For over four years, Tony has been involved in Scholars’ Hope, a charity focused on helping children in low-income areas where school dropout rates are high. Serving as Scholars’ Hope Ambassadors, the Gonzalezes help the children in the program who are referred to as ‘flights’ as they start their educational journey in fourth grade and continue until they graduate high school. The program has a 100 percent graduation rate with a

collective GPA of 3.8 with each graduate from the program going to college. “They’re showing that it doesn’t matter where you’re from, as long as you [have] the right people in your corner,” Tony says. In Los Angeles, Tobie is an ambassador at Baby2Baby, an organization founded by Kelly Sawyer Patricof and Norah Weinstein that provides diapers, clothing and all basic necessities to low-income children 12 and under. Working with this organization, Tobie is a part of the program’s donations to homeless and domestic shelters, foster care programs and children’s hospitals. “It’s important to give parents an opportunity to get a leg up when it comes to supporting their families and getting a head start so that they can lead a better, healthier life,” Tobie says. Choosing to be a part of these charities was an easy decision for the Gonzalezes because the purpose of each organization is the same desire they have for their own children. “It’s about developing good human beings,” Tony says. “It’s teaching kids how to talk for themselves, how to believe in themselves, how to get up when they get knocked down, how to read a room, how to be courteous, how to be grateful, how to conquer fears. “A butterfly can’t see its wings, it doesn’t know how beautiful it is,” Tony continues. “But [these programs] teach kids to see how beautiful they really are and what they’re capable of doing and how magnificent they are.” Whether it’s through charities at home or traveling abroad, the Gonzalezes are all about the people around them. It can be someone they just met, a friend or a family member, and undoubtedly, they will dedicate themselves to getting to know and spend time with who they’re with because that’s just who they are. With their clear love for people, family and travel, there’s a certainty that they’re not slowing down anytime soon. As a family, they’ll continue to make an effort to be outside of themselves, to think of others and, as always, to see more of the world together. “The motto I live by is ‘the world is a great book and those who don’t travel only read one page,’” Tony says. “We are reading our book. We’re trying to read as many pages of it as we can as we travel with our family throughout the world.”

Bloom Where You Are Planted ROSALIE GWEN PAPERIE SHOWCASES THE POWER OF FLOWERS WRITTEN BY: AMEIHIA TURINGAN PHOTOGRAPHED BY: HANNAH WILSON

For Cara Olsen, art brought color and light in a period of darkness. After experiencing chronic pain that specialists were unable to diagnose, she fell into a deep depression which made it difficult to get out of bed. One day, she saw watercolor paintings on Pinterest and decided to buy a cheap set of paints. Even though her initial experiment with watercolor was “horrible,” she continued with it and eventually grew this passion into a business. Olsen entered the entrepreneurial world five years ago when she sold watercolor and graphite portraits on Etsy. After adding flowers behind the portraits, she gravitated beyond faces to just plants. Eventually, her floral affinity would bloom into her current online store, Rosalie Gwen Paperie, which specializes in botany art. In her pieces, she has depicted flowers from violets to magnolias to hyacinths. “I just have always loved flowers and think that each one has a story to tell,” states Olsen. Along with commissions, she sells prints, website logos, phone cases, gift wrap, gift tags, pillowcases and stationary like greeting cards and envelopes. As a watercolor artist, she enjoys seeing her flowers “transform into something that looks almost

real” whenever she adds more paint. Describing her style as “lootanical” (a portmanteau of loose and botanical), her art is both detailed-oriented yet unconcerned about getting everything perfect. “I am an artist who does not believe in perfect art whatsoever. I think the mess and the mistakes are actually part of the magic,” says Olsen. Her creative process also reflects this style. On some days, she sits down, mixes colors on a palette, and paints whatever comes to mind. “[Loose art] is a concept of what [an object] would look like if the mind wasn’t so strict about what it was creating,” explains Olsen. Other times she enjoys making pieces which involve heavily researching a flower, selecting two to seven photos to study how it works, and spending the next two to seven days creating the artwork. In the years since first trying out painting, Olsen has found her magic by capturing the beauty of flowers through watercolor. Especially when managing fibromyalgia and Hashimoto’s disease alongside a business and toddler, Olsen demonstrates how far passion and strength can take you. “I am so lucky to be able to have turned something that brings me so much joy into a business that I love,” remarks Olsen.

What’s in a Name • Olsen’s business name is a combination of her middle name, Rosalie, and her daughter’s middle name, Gwen. Flower of Choice • While she draws all sorts of flowers for her pieces, her favorite type are wild pink roses. WORKOUT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON WITH THESE ON-THE-GO MOVES WRITTEN BY: KATHY GOTZ PHOTOGRAPHED BY: AKIN ODEBUNMI

One of the greatest challenges we face while traveling during the holidays is adhering to our daily nutrition and exercise routine. That being said, simple exercises like squats, burpees and pull-ups can be performed while traveling, and take minimal space and time to complete. To help offset additional calorie intake (hello, pumpkin pie!) and the unavoidable sedentary hours that come with traveling, a HIIT workout is the best choice. Lori McKee Lever, an Elite Personal Trainer and REV32® Coach at Renaissance ClubSport Aliso Viejo, put together the following calorie-burning HIIT workout just for you.

TRICEP DIP (30 seconds)

The World is Your Gym • Lori recommends getting in a bit of exercise anytime, anywhere. “Walk instead of public transportation, or take the stairs instead of escalators or elevators.”

• Sitting in a chair, place your hands on the edge of the seat. Move your bum forward off the front of the chair with knees slightly bent in front of you. Lower your body down by bending your elbows, then press your palms into the chair and extend your elbows, pushing yourself back up to the starting position. Lori’s Pro Tip: “For a more advanced exercise, stand on one foot to perform the Single Leg Chair Squat. Perform this exercise for 30 seconds [on] each leg.”

PULL-UPS (30 seconds)

• Lay on the floor face up with legs straight out while gripping the edge of a desk or table. Lift your upper body by pulling your chest towards the edge of the desk, then gently lower yourself down to the starting position. Lori’s Pro Tip: “To make this exercise easier, bend knees and place feet flat on the floor.” Wrap It Up • Lori recommends performing each set for 60 seconds with a 30-second rest between each move. After completing all the steps, rest for one minute.

SUPERMAN (30 seconds) • Lay on your belly with arms by your sides, palms up, then lift your chest, shoulders and head up off the floor. At the same time, lift your straightened legs and feet off the floor, squeezing your glutes. Hold the position. Lori’s Pro Tip: “For good form during this exercise, don’t tilt your head to look up. Keep your head in line with your spine and feet.”

Just for Fun • “Arguably the most fun part of my job is doing the media flights. I will fly either a local media personality or, my favorite, a hometown hero. We perform all the maneuvers we do in the show,” he explained.

No Engine Required • While at the academy, Major Felker was on the Wings of Blue parachute team, becoming a three-time national champion! Catch the Show • The USAF Thunderbirds will be coming to Huntington Beach Oct. 20-21 for the Great Pacific Airshow.

The United States Air Force has been innovating flight since its founding in 1947. While these advancements allow the USAF to protect and serve, it also paved the way for pilots to demonstrate their mastery of flight. In 1953, the Thunderbirds were founded. The USAF Thunderbirds travel the country performing aerobatic feats for enthralled audiences. With earnest precision, the entire team is dedicated to fulfilling their duty making each performance safe and fun for all.

Sky’s the Limit

The current Advanced Pilot and Narrator for the Thunderbirds is Irvine local, Major Branden Felker. While Felker is still in his first season as a Thunderbird, his love of flight and serving his country goes back to childhood. “Ever since I was about 8 years old, I wanted to go to the [Air Force] Academy. I visited there on a vacation with my family and just fell in love with the place,” he explained.

As Felker grew older and learned more about the USAF, he buckled down and studied hard. He started flying Cessnas in high school, taking lessons from his aunt. This culminated into acceptance into the Air Force Academy, where he studied aeronautical engineering, doing graduate level research and having his work published.

He then spent five years after graduation training new pilots in the T-38, which led to him flying the F-16—the same jet flown by the Thunderbirds. Part of the 64th Aggressor Squadron, he helped train combat pilots by mimicking enemy aircraft battle scenarios. Now a Thunderbird, his job includes complete oversight of the show from start to finish. Arriving days early, he meets with the local crew and now runs every possible logistic with each team member, making sure the show goes off without a hitch. The rest of the crew—mechanics, medics, pilots and everyone in between—arrive the next day to finalize prep and put on a spectacle. During the show, the pilots perform maneuvers with tact and grace on a 10-ton machine. Barrel rolls, nose dives, vertical takeoffs—you name it, the Thunderbirds do it. As narrator, Felker introduces the pilots, maneuvers and runs commentary during the show. The child from Orange County who dreamed of flying now eats, breathes and sleeps flight for the USAF. He added, “I always tell young people to try and give themselves as many opportunities as possible by not unnecessarily closing doors. Work hard with what is in front of you right now because you never know where it will lead.”
