Editor's Note 72

How to Make

HOW TO COMMIT TO COLOR

Dear Reader, Not only does this book mark the beginning of my favorite time of year, but it also marks the 100th issue produced by LOCALE Magazine. As you can imagine, turning 100 is a big deal, so at the turn of this significant milestone, I couldn’t help but be reminded of fellow centenarian, my 101-year-old great grandma (whom I call GG). GG was born in 1918 and has lived through world events that most of us only know of due to our history textbooks. Her family immigrated from Portugal, and lived on and worked a rural farm in California’s Central Valley. She grew up in that countryside, fell in love with her high school sweetheart and then raised a family of her own. Two generations later, she helped raise me, and my childhood was full of stories of her spirit and stubbornness (two things she was never short on) as well as her signature pearls of wisdom. So when it came to building this issue, I tried to keep those pearls in mind, and I hope you can find them as important as I do: 1. “Find what you love to do.” Through these pages, we have found so many different passions to bring to you. From the “visual optimism” that is Leslie Schneider’s Instagram page (pg. 70) to tips from Danielle Nagel on how to transform your home into something bright and beautiful (pg. 72), this issue is chockfull of artists, creators and business owners who have made a career out of their true callings.

2. “So long as you’re healthy and have your family, that’s the main thing.” We hope this issue finds a home inside yours throughout this holiday season; that it’s thumbed through by friends and relatives as they cozy-up on your couch, finding all the things they want to try while with you—whether it’s the home-style cooking of Coyote Grill’s Desirée Gomez (pg. 134), planning a trip together while reading our Hotel Guide (pg. 93) or creating a few Lillet cocktails (pg. 143). 3. “Just have fun.” There are two people gracing the pages of this issue that sum this up perfectly. The first is Neal Hruby, creator of Date the City, who ventured to La Quinta with his gorgeous girlfriend Shaelee Hansen and planned a fun-filled, day-long date in the charming town (pg. 115). The second is Cover Star Kira Kosarin (pg. 74), whom I had the pleasure of interviewing. Meeting her in-person was nothing short of a good time, and her humble and hard-working attitude still resonates with me to this day. So to those of you reading this, I hope that both GG and this issue leave you feeling inspired, especially in this season of reflection and upcoming change. I hope that you find your passions, and I hope that as you’re surrounded by the ones you love, you’ll cherish the health and time that you share. But most importantly, don’t forget to have fun. After all, “that’s the main thing.”

Happy Reading,

JORDAN NISHKIAN Editor jordan.n@localemagazine.com | @wordsbyjordan

“My eyes can take a lot of makeup,” Kira Kosarin said to Makeup Artist Brian Bond as she took a seat in his chair, bare-faced and beautiful. From the moment she walked into the makeshift dressing room at American Recycled Clothing, Kosarin’s confidence flooded the space. And while her energy was bold and tenacious, it was an energy that lifted those around her, filling everyone with inspired anticipation.

M

While Bond and Hair Stylist Malena Villavicencio buzzed busily around her, Kosarin remained calm and conversational. Despite her youth, Kosarin was the picture of professionalism—although that didn’t stop her from exchanging nerdy millennial jokes with me. Talking to and being around Kosarin was like meeting a friend of a friend, and it was easy to see that feeling was mutual throughout the room. Even as our interview veered offtopic, it turned into a conversation that drew in nearly the entire production team. Even Production Manager Renée Calder took a few moments’ pause from her tasks to listen in as Kosarin spoke of her travels to Malta.

After getting all glammed up, Kosarin was ready for her closeup. “I went for the polished look of expensive skin with a ‘90s metallic eye,” Bond explained. And it was a choice that vibed perfectly with Kosarin’s personality, the edgy looks Stylist Teresita Madrigal had curated and the photoshoot location itself. “The look of flawless skin against the rough background of vintage denim photographed beautifully and gave [us] the contrast and pop we needed!” Villavicencio added, “The clothing choices really inspired my looks for hair! I loved the tight pony I created by pulling three sections of hair into one, guaranteeing a long-lasting style that could be photographed for hours.” And with the way Kosarin was moving to classic ‘90s R&B as she danced in front of Photographer Tae Kwon’s camera, the structural integrity of that ponytail was definitely put to the test. After the photoshoot was called to wrap, everyone packed up and began to make their way out of the labyrinthian warehouse, but not before hearing a “thank you” from Kosarin. “I love you guys,” she said with a smile. “Thank you so much!”

HOW TO MAKE

How to Commit to Color Dazey LA’s Danielle Nagel Makes Her Apartment More Awe-Worthy With the Power of Color WRITTEN BY: JENNIFER PELLERITO • PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: DANIELLE NAGEL

“Not being afraid of color and just going for it is a statement in of itself.” —Danielle Nagel

Expert : Danielle Nagel Credentials: Founder, Owner and Designer, Dazey LA Tip 1

• “It’s okay to mix different shades. If you’re going to mix shades, mix a lot of different shades so it looks intentional.”

Tip 2

• “Test swatches – it will blow your mind how different it looks on the wall versus a swatch. Even just one shade up or down can have an entirely different look. Our room was shockingly bright [yellow]; it wasn’t cute! But then we went with a slightly more gold, subtle yellow and it looked so much better.”

Tip 3

• “Not being afraid of color and just going for it is a statement in of itself. It does tie everything together because it’s so bold. It’s all so bold.”

Tip 4

• “Pulling together inspiration from images and different Pinterest boards can really help

get a clear vision of what colors you want.”

Tip 5

• “It can be really helpful to keep [colors] in the same tint. Our kitchen and living room are both lighter shades of pink and sage.”

Tip 6

• “We have green in our living room and green in Phillip’s office. We have pink in the kitchen, and also my office is blue and pink and then we have pink in the living room. You can tell there’s a theme throughout.”

Tip 7

• “Accent walls are a great way to start exploring color. They’re easy to paint and paint back or paint different— it’s just one wall. If our entire room was yellow, the whole room would have a yellow hue that bounces off the walls. What’s great about an accent wall is it doesn’t really mess with the light in that room as much.”

The power of color is a strength that Danielle Nagel, Founder and Owner of Dazey LA, knows how to wield in fashion, art and design. One of her latest interior design projects is the Dazeywood Penthouse, an apartment she shares with her boyfriend, Phillip Butler, in Beachwood Canyon, Los Angeles. Featuring bold colors in every room, the apartment is emblematic of Nagel’s identifiable signature style—fearless, feminine and uplifting. “When you really commit to a color, that’s when you’re going to make something awe-worthy,” says Nagel. Steeped in funky, Art Deco and ‘90s-inspired décor, the design infuses lush, velvety textures in sunny yellow, bubbly pink, sage green and baby blue. How can you get the look? We spoke with Nagel to get the inside scoop. 72 LOCALE MAGAZINE

she may be known for her four-season stint as superhero Phoebe on Nickelodeon’s “The Thundermans,” but since the show ended in May of last year, Kira Kosarin has begun to explore—and conquer—the industry on and off-camera. Never one to shy away from hard work or from showcasing her many gifts, Kosarin is turning heads and wowing the world with her can-do spirit and multifaceted talents. With a debut R&B album, an international album tour, a role in a HULU hit and a co-directed TV pilot episode under her belt in 2019 alone, it’s clear that Kosarin is just getting started.

Coming from an incredibly gifted home, Kosarin attributes her interest in performing to her family, particularly to her composer uncle, her actress mother and her music director father. According to Kosarin, her whole family “did Broadway Theater in different capacities,” and her early childhood is vividly marked with memories of watching them from the wings. “I grew up, basically backstage, watching my mom perform and my dad produce music and my uncle conduct—so I always knew I wanted to be in show biz.”

C

“I specifically knew I wanted to do TV and film by the time I was 12,” Kosarin continues. “I took a comedy acting class in Florida and I got hooked immediately.” Young Kosarin’s childhood continued to blossom with more memories of theater life, only this time she was the one taking a bow. “I had done regional theater in Florida, community theater, school plays and all that good stuff,” she says, “and then this acting teacher who found me in Florida invited me out to LA for a summer workshop. I went, met my agent and sort of never left.” From there, Kosarin’s name speckled the credits of various shorts and TV shows as small roles, but by the time she was 14, she had landed a leading role on “The Thundermans.” “It’s so hard to sum up what I learned on ‘The Thundermans’ because it was ages 14 through 20—I learned everything!” she explains. Her time as Phoebe Thunderman not only offered her an incredible, first-hand learning experience, but it also provided her with a network of amazing people and resources. “It set me up in every way; it set me up for directing and just being on-set. It set me up for how to have a full-time job at 14 years old and have people relying on my ability to, you know, be a responsible, adult human-being and do my work every day,” Kosarin says with a smile. “We also traveled a lot for the show, so that was my opportunity to see the world for the first time, which was really cool.”

Now as an adult, Kosarin wants to pay what she learned forward to the next generation of young talent. This summer, she worked with Camp Hollywood, a “summer intensive acting camp” put on by Kosarin’s old acting school, to co-direct a pilot episode of “The Lerners.” Not only does this program build professional experience for its students, but it also creates short films for their reels. “When I first moved to LA, I did [Camp Hollywood] for three years before I booked ‘The Thundermans,’ and it sorta taught me everything I knew,” Kosarin notes. Little did she know, Camp Hollywood would later re-enter her life to help her hone in her skills behind the camera. “I’d been shadowing sitcom directors all over the country for the past couple years kind of waiting for an opportunity to direct for real, and I got a call from the school saying ‘Hey, Japheth Gordon is going to do our first sitcom, come direct for us,’” Kosarin recounts as an eager smile illuminates her face, “and I was like, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’” Kosarin was ready to accept this new role with all of its challenges, and building a sitcom pilot in 10 days from start to finish surely presented its own obstacles. “It’s crazy because I wasn’t just directing—I was in editing for seven nights and built the laughtrack from scratch. We actually built a sitcom in 10 days...and we were making it work as we go, trying to make it the best sitcom it could be. And it totally worked out,” she says. “I’m really proud of it.” Co-directing “The Lerners” pilot and being back with Camp Hollywood was an amazing experience, but for Kosarin, working with the next generation of talent was the highlight. “That’s the whole reason I want to direct kids’ shows,” Kosarin explains. “There’s so much that I wish people had told me when I was that age starting off, so to be able to see these kids literally, exactly at the same point in their journey as I was nine years ago, [I want to] try to interject with things that would have made my life easier back then.”

Have No Fear • “When you first start performing, your body is going to know, it’s going to feel that adrenaline and give you a response,” Kosarin advises. “So your job is to take that feeling and consciously interpret it as excitement and anticipation, rather than nerves and anxiety.”

To All the Boys She’s Loved Before • According to Kosarin, each Off Brand song is directly inspired by a prior relationship. She laughs, “There are only seven songs on this album, so if you were one of the boys who made it in there— even if we only dated for like, three weeks, you’re welcome.”

A Swift Learner • The first song Kosarin learned to play on the guitar was “Our Song” by Taylor Swift. After picking her up from a voice lesson, Kosarin’s dad stopped in a guitar shop with her. At the time, she could already play the flute and piano, but he thought a guitar would be a better accompaniment for her vocals. By 5 p.m., Kosarin was back at home with her new guitar and a Taylor Swift songbook, and by 2 a.m. she had learned to play every song in the book.

6lack and Blues • One of Kosarin’s dream song collaborations would be rapper 6lack. “His features are just nextlevel,” she says.

“With the industry I’m in, there’s so much intersection of art and commerce, so it’s easy to lose the joy in the art that I’m making, and I find that rotating between different facets of my creative career keeps me going.”

—kira kosarin

While acting and directing are both paths she definitely plans on continuing to explore, her music career currently takes precedence. “Music’s kind of the number one true passion,” says Kosarin. Even though it meant the world to her, Kosarin made an active choice to not pursue music for a while. She felt what many of us feel when pursuing our passions—fear. There’s a fear that our dream will betray us and it won’t work out, or if it does work out, it becomes a career, which would strip the joy from it. “And to be quite honest,” Kosarin adds, “the industry threatens to take the joy out of music at every turn, but then, every once in a while, I get to be in a room with some really talented, creative people who remind me how wonderful it is to be in an environment where you can make things you’re really passionate about with other people who are equally as passionate and talented. That collaboration makes it worth it.”

W

When going through the seven songs in Kosarin’s Off Brand album, the passion in her voice is apparent, but upon closer listening, you hear the spirit of her words. Each song, from the upbeat confidence of “Area Code” to the sultry, confrontational nature of “Crazy’s Your Type,” takes on its own meaning. When you press play on her songs, you feel that you’re instantly transported inside an intimate conversation or eavesdropping on an emotional encounter— hearing words that, if merely spoken, would fall flat with the weight they carry. Instead, they come alive with her music—and this was exactly Kosarin’s intent. “When I started writing music, it was a means of clarity,” she explains. “It was my diary. It was a way of articulating things that I couldn’t figure out how to articulate any other way.” Through Off Brand, listeners can directly hear and relate to how different relationships have affected Kosarin and how she worked through different emotions, such as writing “Wandering Eyes” and her single “Vinyl” when she was 16 and dealing with heartbreak. She wrote, and continues to write, experiences which are true to her. “It’s funny; I really write music for me and for things that I need to say, and maybe for a person I want to say something to but I can’t, so I say it to an invisible version of them in a song,” Kosarin divulges. “The problem with that is that it wasn’t until I released my album that I realized, ‘Oh, wait—

other people also hear these lyrics and are now hearing my deepest, darkest secrets while listening to the radio.’” Off Brand is brimming with power and hyperconfidence, and Kosarin attributes that to her alter-ego, “Bad Bitch Kira,” who exudes sass and can speak unfiltered in a way Kosarin sometimes struggles with in real life. “A lot of [Off Brand] was to make me listen to that super-confident, sassy part of me,” Kosarin laughs. “Because in real-life, I’m super-nice!” (Totally true, by the way). While her songwriting had its start as something therapeutic, Kosarin is ready to focus more on expression. “Now that it’s my job, I feel like [music is] a means for me to try on different versions of myself,” she says. “Each song emphasizes a totally different part of my personality, and being in rooms with other writers dramatizes those differences even more.” And with musical inspirations stemming from her “dad’s music,” such as James Taylor and the Eagles, from singer/songwriter-based artists like Colbie Caillat and Sarah Bareilles, and from the worlds of modern R&B, hip hop, trap and EDM with artist like SZA, Kehlani, H.E.R., Childish Gambino, Frank Ocean, Chance the Rapper and Bryson Tiller (whose Trap Soul majorly influenced Off Brand), there is so much more for Kosarin to delve into and explore. That exploration isn’t just confined to music. While 2019 has shown endless promise for her music career after her album release, her Off Brand tour and her first performance at Slimefest in the UK, she has big plans to continue to broaden her horizons in other fields of interest. “With the industry I’m in, there’s so much intersection of art and commerce, so it’s easy to lose the joy in the art that I’m making, and I find that rotating between different facets of my creative career keeps me going,” Kosarin notes. And she hopes to inspire others to do the same in their everyday lives. “Find as many things as you possibly can that you’re passionate about, pursue a lot of them, stick with the ones you're somewhat good at and then try to make them all work,” she advises. “Keep planting seeds—you have more time than you think. Just keep training, keep getting better at all those things, look out for opportunities and keep working. I don’t know, man, wanting to do something creative is really tough, but if it works, it’s a really great way to live.”

If Walls Could Talk THESE LIVING WALLS ARE BRIDGING AGRICULTURE AND DECOR FOR A NATURAL FLAIR

In the plant kingdom, one man reigns as king of the jungle. That man is Greg Wallace. Nearly 40 years ago, a seed was planted that Wallace grew into a blooming—eh hem— we mean booming business. Stemming from his own Southern California roots, Wallace took over an Orange County botanical business in 1980 and, what started as a simple side gig, developed into four decades of working in the field of plants, and his company, Instant Jungle, is still thriving today.

I

Instant Jungle is an industry leader when it comes to the latest plant furnishing trend: living walls. These installations act as living, breathing art that can complement any personal or public space. When it comes to choosing your living wall, there are three different types of applications (tray, module or TerraScreen wall) to consider after deciding whether the plants will live inside or outside. Design concepts and aesthetic are meticulously mulled over, and a method to frame the wall and how it will adhere to its new vertical home are picked. Depending on which system is chosen, a living wall can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to install from start to finish. Instant Jungle works hand-in-hand with landscapers

and customers to ensure that the wall is functional, aesthetically pleasing and matches its surroundings. This form of agricultural art can range in scope from a single wall to an entire rooftop and everything in between.

Greg Wallace CEO, Instant Jungle

“Plants create a nice environment and ambiance and they just really enhance [an area]. We stage with plants to soften things, make them look warm and friendly,” says Wallace. While the living walls still remain one of the top trends in the flora field, Wallace acknowledges that “architectural plants are really popular again…[they are] coming back and making a stronger statement because it also kind of ties in with the drought-tolerant trend.” If you recall, droughttolerant plants began sprouting like weeds with all sorts of species of succulents invading the industry. Wallace jokes, however, that “we’ve had rain and we have short-term memory,” so he predicts this trend may soon be watered down, so to speak. Wallace explains, “The cool thing is we can use anything that is on the property. We have different decorative containers. We have different ways to wrap [our plants]. We offer underplanting so you can do a forest, a jungle…we can create the whole element or illusion, whatever you want to create.”

working at Strouds Linens that Weston met a man who ultimately guided him into a career in real estate. 88 LOCALE MAGAZINE

STREET-SMART • Weston suggests renting in the area or the specific neighborhood you are looking to purchase a property in before making your final decision. Immersing yourself directly into a community is the best way to get an unbiased sense of the true culture and dynamics of an area.

Weston was thrilled to be working in an environment where his strong work ethic would be rewarded. “In a very short period of time, I was Strouds’ top salesman,” Weston recalls “In fact, I was so quick to move the vendor’s product that they incentivized me so I could motivate the other employees I worked with to push more product.” Jim Klisanin, broker and owner of Baytown Realty in Seal Beach, was purchasing linens with his wife when he first met Weston. Back at home, Klisanin’s wife discussed with him how impressed she was with the young man’s professionalism, insisting her husband invite Weston to Baytown Realty. After meeting with Weston, Klisanin urged him to quit his job and come work for him instead. From handing out market update flyers across the city to placing Fourth of July flags in residents’ front yards, Weston did it all. After months of assisting Baytown Realty, and just after his 18th birthday, Weston obtained his California Association of Realtors Salesperson's License. “While going to school and working as a licensed realtor, I was able to make $96k my first year in the business,” explains Weston.

In just this last year, Weston has closed nearly $100 million in overall sales thanks to his continued attention to detail and the same high standard of professionalism he has held since he first joined the workforce. While discussing the real estate industry today, Weston adds, “Individuals are now, more than ever, understanding the importance of a seasoned real estate agent.” For Weston, being a seasoned real estate agent is only part of what customers get to experience when working with him. “I don't think anybody can argue that customer service is always at the top of their list and I want to create an experience that is truly next-level,” he explains. When asked how Weston creates a genuine sense of trust and understanding between him and a client, he answers, “When you tell someone something at 10 in the morning, tell them the same thing at three in the afternoon.” Being someone who continually sticks to their word and always stays truthful with clients is one of the many aspects that has led Weston to great success. Looking towards the future, Weston continues to focus his efforts on creating an unparalleled customer experience when working with him. “Off the grid doesn’t mean rustic,” explains Ida Alwin, one of the owners of Baltic Sands Properties, an environmentally sensitive desert design company. The idea of fully sustainable homes was born in the winter of 2016, when Ewa & Jacques Marais came to the desert to visit Alwin, their niece. Today, Alwin is Owner and Operations Manager of the company, and Ewa Marais is the CEO. Marais is an interior designer whose work has been featured in many décor magazines and has designed homes for many years in South Africa. Alwin comes from a career in TV production in London. Her love for the desert brought her to Johnson Valley, California, where she built a prototype sustainable home.

According to Alwin, Baltic Sands homes are completely 100 percent off-grid, and each has its own well. “They’re completely solar powered,” she points out. “We use mini-splits—one of the most energy efficient products on the market—to heat and cool the homes.” In addition to their ability to control the temperature in individual rooms, mini-splits utilize air purifiers, she adds. They’re powered by solar panels, and energy is converted from the solar panels to the homes. Each home also comes with its own backup generator.

The first Baltic Sands home, JT1, sold very quickly as an Airbnb property, and JT2 is currently on the market at $799,000. Both have sleek, contemporary designs, an open floor plan and high ceilings. ESCAPE /// GUIDE

SAN DIEGO BEST OF THE WESTS

For the

World Traveler Who’s Homesick for California You don’t have to travel to the Palace of Versailles to experience French antiques and tapestries, Persian rugs and crystal chandelier decor, as The Westgate Hotel San Diego offers all of that and then some. Situated in the heart of downtown San Diego, the 223-deluxe room (160 of those are kings) hotel offers an exodus to another world, waiting with open arms for the ideal staycation hug. And since that hug comes in a world that is decidedly French-inspired, it makes perfect sense that The Westgate offers a restaurant that is très chic. French-style architecture and decor spill over into The Westgate Room, where you’ll find savory beef tenderloin, as well as an array of seafood from lobster to Bay scallops paired with Baja Prawn. Delicious California cuisine with French influences certainly supports The Westgate’s emphasis on wellness, as stimulated taste buds and warm bellies are evidence of that. But The Westgate Hotel takes it to a whole new level with its AquaVie Spa. There are few places in the heart of a major city where you can find relaxation, peace and quiet, but the AquaVie Spa not only offers just that within its private walls, but also advanced wellness treatments. Since health is a theme for staycationers at The Westgate, you won’t be disappointed by the 40,000 square feet of “sleek custom-designed workout spaces” at the AquaVie Fitness + Wellness Club. Not only does it offer 200 cardio and weight machines, which eclipses most local gyms, but also spin classes, pool access and even a running track on the fourth floor, all of which allow you to zone out while you workout, and zone in on stunning downtown San Diego views. A GO O D WALK. . . SPO ILED? Ú Mark Twain said, “Golf is a good walk spoiled,” but he should’ve added that if the first tee is a short walk from your bed, golf becomes a walk improved. For the

Local in Search of the Perfect Staycation The friendly Westin staff offers a free shuttle service within a five-mile radius of the resort, and within that area is Carlsbad Village and no shortage of activities and food to keep you occupied. But that’s assuming you’d even want to leave the resort in the first place, as the Mediterraneanstyle hotel offers everything from entertainment to first class relaxation. After a day out at the beach or golfing at the adjacent The Crossings 18-hole golf course, you may want to take time to treat yourself at the Ocean Pearl Spa. Their healing body treatments are enhanced by products and methods inspired by the sea, relaxing visitors with services such as the Vitamin Sea Massage or the Mermaid Facial. And of course, what day would be complete without a world-class dinner eaten while watching a stunning sunset view? The 20|Twenty, named for the picturesque, near-panoramic view of the western sky, will have you warming up next to a fire pit while the ocean breeze kisses you as it blows through your hair. Locallysourced food is the restaurant trend these days, but 20|Twenty is a class above, proven by their constant rotation of ingredients and cocktails based on the best locally sourced ingredients. For the casual eater and drinker, The Westin Carlsbad also offers the 7 Mile Kitchen, which serves pizza and beer on tap—‘nough said. But the designers of this coastal retreat had Southern Californians in mind when they included a complete rental service for athletic gear. So if you want to use “forgetting your runners” as an excuse for not working out during your staycation, you’re fresh out of luck.

Greatest Hits • Many Tavern House guests have asked Wilhem to bring back their favorites from his other restaurant concepts like the Voodoo Shrimp Martini and fried chicken, which are on the current Tavern House menu. He hopes to revisit more classics as weekly specials.

Tavern House pays homage to the traditional Mexican recipe while also infusing Wilhelm's personal twist on the dish after experimentation.

Wilhelm. “I wanted something that was a little lighter, a little cleaner and a little fresher.” While other Veracruzana dishes use different types of whole fish, Wilhelm chose red snapper fillets due to the snappers’ prevalence in Mexico and texture. When baked, the fish becomes extremely flakey and soft while bathed in the tomato, oregano and cumin flavored sauce. The soft texture of the dish pairs well with the side of paprika and turmeric-scented red rice.

Tavern House Kitchen + Bar is elevated above the water, lending a beautiful view of the Newport Harbor and the blue sky as you enjoy a meal. Like its name suggests, Tavern House is a place for gathering and celebration. Opened in July 2019, Tavern House is the newest offering by Orange County restaurateurs David Wilhelm and Gregg Solomon. Serving items from the coastal cuisines of Hawaii, Mexico and California, the restaurant celebrates the beach lifestyle through comfort food and flavorful drinks. With an emphasis on seafood dishes, one order that has quickly become a staple amongst guests is the Red Snapper Veracruzana.

The Red Snapper Veracruzana is a baked red snapper immersed in a smoky ranchero sauce on a casserole dish. The dish starts with a tomato based sauce mixed with garlic, onions, oregano and cumin. Red snapper fillets are layered over the sauce and then topped with sliced heirloom cherry tomatoes, green sweet castelvetrano olives, capers, fresh oregano, garlic and olive oil. The Red Snapper Veracruzana is baked to perfection and oozing with flavor in just 10 to 12 minutes. “It starts [with] a little bit of ranchero on the bottom but the fresh heirloom tomatoes weep their juices out as the dish cooks so it creates a really highly flavorful sauce,” explains Wilhelm. “It’s super-healthy, light, but with tons of flavors all working together to compliment the flakiness of the snapper.” The dish is created in the style of Veracruz cuisine. Tavern House pays homage to the traditional Mexican recipe while also infusing Wilhelm's personal twist on the dish after experimentation. After testing different approaches to preparing this dish, Wilhelm developed one that worked for him, which satisfied customers. “[The dish is] oftentimes [served] with [a] premade sauce basted over the top of the fish and everything,” says

For Tavern House, using seasonal offerings and sustainable practices plays a big role in bringing the dish to the table. Due to his experience with Aquarium of the Pacific’s former Seafood for the Future program, Wilhelm has a deep understanding of aquaculture, the implications of overfishing in the ocean and the importance of using sustainably sourced ingredients which he brings to Tavern House. The restaurant adheres towards the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch list which suggests which fish to buy or consume based upon the environmental impact of the fishing or farming method. “We won’t serve any fish on or off the menu that isn’t compliant with the listing of acceptable species,” says Wilhelm. Due to its delicious flavors, the Red Snapper Veracruzana has made a big impression on Tavern House guests. “It’s already become one of our signature dishes; I didn’t intend it to be so,” says Wilhelm. “I thought people would really enjoy it and we’ve gotten lots of great comments on it. It’s the highest-selling seafood entrée on the menu.” And in just a few months, Tavern House has cemented its place in the Newport Harbor. Through new blue color palettes, light wood flooring, carpeting and decorative lighting, the space transformed from 3-Thirty-3 Waterfront into Tavern House. With a new contemporary look, Tavern House breathes energy into the space from the new decor and food. Combining coastal seafood with the Newport Beach lifestyle, the restaurant has become a place for the local community to celebrate together. “‘Tavern’ is in the name because the early taverns started out being a gathering place for people,” says Wilhelm. “Not just about food or drink, but [also] about socializing. [A] party of six or eight [can] walk in and everybody can find something on the menu that they enjoy.”

As you walk down the wooded pathway opposite from the Packing House, you see a glass structure sitting in the distance, gleaming under the gentle sunlight, surrounded by clusters of trees and bushes. The structure is made entirely out of glass and resembles a dreamy fairytale greenhouse, the perfect morning or afternoon spot to enjoy a delicious, healthy and organic meal. A wooden sign is posted by the entrance, spelling out “Cultivation Kitchen” in forestgreen letters.

FOOD • Within the first bite, you can taste how clean and organic all of the ingredients are.

When the owner, Dale LaFlam, first envisioned this concept of a healthy kitchen, he took it to the next step and created a business plan with another purpose in mind, to give back more than [they] take: “In terms of the food, our goal is to help other local purveyors, small farmers and pastry companies grow their businesses. That’s part of our way of giving back.”

DECOR • Sitting in a glass structure surrounded by beautiful plants is an unforgettable fairytale-like experience.

One of their most popular menu options is the Mix-N-Match Healthy Plate: choose a protein as your main entrée with two additional sides. The popular choice is the 100 percent sustainable salmon with freshly-sourced rainbow potatoes and the crunchy roasted broccoli with a cilantrolime vinaigrette that is to die for! Together, the combination comes at a very affordable price with the highest quality organic ingredients. You won’t be able to find any other restaurant who can beat these prices and LaFlam’s unwavering high-standard of health and sustainability. Another top choice is the Tropical Dragon pitaya bowl. Bright pink blended pitaya, aka dragon fruit, is topped with mango, pineapple, toasted coconut and gluten-

PRICE • Their prices are very affordable and reasonable, and just under $16 for their most expensive combination. WINE IN • All of their wines are organic and sustainable. LaFlam recommends the Furmint, a Hungarian white wine.

free granola. The pitaya is slightly sweeter than most blended fruit bowls, which really brightens up your palate. If you’ve never tried pitaya before, Cultivation Kitchen will whip up the best fruit bowl you’ve ever tasted. “We don’t take tips here,” LaFlam says. “We are not a full-service restaurant. We are fastcasual, or what we like to call ‘fresh-casual.’ We try to let our customers know that but the reality is, we can’t catch everybody, and sometimes we come out to find a couple bills sitting on the table. So...at the end of every month...any cash that comes from tips all goes to a local charity called Riverbed Farms, a full functioning, sustainable, urban farm right here in Anaheim.” 146 LOCALE MAGAZINE

• Cultivation Kitchen is the perfect place to bring a date, hang out with family, share a drink with friends and, of course, enjoy a delicious healthy cuisine in the heart of Anaheim.

RAISE A GLASS TO TURA ALCOHOLIC KOMBUCHA FOR A HEALTHIER ALTERNATIVE WRITTEN BY: RAPHAEL MADRID PHOTOGRAPHED BY: JOHN GLOVER STYLED BY: JACLYN KERSHEK

It’s hard to believe that just 10 short years ago, the only libation choices widely accessible to us were regular ol’ beer and the variety of hard alcohol we are quite familiar with. Times have truly changed for the better with microbreweries and distilleries sprouting up in just about every able town in America. Now, the variety has ascended to the pinnacle with the addition of Tura Alcoholic Kombucha.

I

The phrase “You can’t have your cake and eat it, too,” doesn’t really apply here, does it? In fact, it looks like you can have your cake, eat it and reap its benefits too. Tura is the perfect brew with the benefits of kombucha and the crisp bite you expect from an alcoholic beverage. While all kombucha naturally contains alcohol, Tura takes an additional step to create this certified organic, gluten-free kombucha that is four percent ABV and only 120 calories, making it the best alternative to beer since beer itself. Tura was developed by a humble team of kombucha enthusiasts led by Product Developer Annette Fritsch. Brewed in small batches

with a base of fermented tea, organic cane sugar and carefully selected symbiotic cultures of bacteria and yeast, Tura is the synthesis of a refreshing alcoholic beverage that is the embodiment of kombucha’s ancient origins and today’s modern techniques. Before the creation of Tura, Fritsch found joy in experimenting in the complexities of kombucha’s fermentation. As a thirdgeneration yogi, meditation practitioner, student of Ayurveda, avid kombucha drinker and curious brewer, Fritsch wanted to craft a great tasting, hard kombucha that would fit within her lifestyle and the lifestyle of many others living well. “While I have dedicated most of my life to fermentation, I’ve found that kombucha fermentation is one of the most unique, given the interaction of different types of fermentation working harmoniously together— all to create something refreshing and delicious!” said Fritsch. It’s that spirit and dedication that birthed Tura’s natural greatness.

Brewed in small batches with a base of fermented tea, organic cane sugar and carefully selected symbiotic cultures of bacteria and yeast, Tura is the synthesis of a refreshing alcoholic beverage…

Any Way You Like It • Tura is available in six-pack bottles, 16-ounce cans and on draft.

Reap the Benefits • Kombucha contains probiotics and has been associated with reducing blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

I’m Jennifer G. Wilson and I write the blog Jennifer G. Lifestyle. I started my blog in 2013 and have loved it ever since. I typically post about all of my favorite things: fashion, beauty, travel, interiors and daily life. In addition to blogging, I work full-time as a residential interior designer. Juggling two jobs is definitely a challenge at times, but I love what I do and there is never a dull moment. Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved shopping and dining, so SOCO & The OC Mix is essentially a one-stop-shop for me!

I have a love/hate relationship with the sun. I love warm, sunny days but hate how bad the sun is for my skin. That being said, I’m obsessed with skincare and basically anything anti-aging. There is almost nothing I wouldn’t try at least once, and I blog about most of my experiences with products and procedures because I like to keep things real.

Jen of all Trades

I have dabbled in a career in just about everything that I love, from jewelry designer to fashion writer to wardrobe stylist. I went back to school for interior design, became an interior designer and then launched my blog, Jennifer G. Lifestyle (formerly Modern Ensemble) and the rest is history.

Ú After a long day on my feet, it always feels good to end the day on a healthy

note, and an early dinner at Greenleaf is the perfect way to do that! They have so many menu options, all created using only the freshest ingredients. It’s hard to choose what to order, and I usually go for one of their delectable salads or handmade sandwiches. Regardless, I know I’ll be enjoying a colorful, nutritious (and delicious!) meal that I can feel good about eating.

They’re Your Car People THE GMS OF AUDI FLETCHER JONES SHARE WHAT DRIVES THE DEALERSHIP’S FUTURE

WRITTEN BY: DIEGO E. GAXIOLA PHOTOGRAPHED BY: DAVID ALONZO HERNANDEZ

From the famous Fletcher Jones license plate covers that we are used to seeing on our daily commutes to the distinguished MercedesBenz center that has graced Newport Beach’s Back Bay since 1991, the premier auto dealer continues to lead the industry in unprecedented customer service and a refined inventory of luxurious vehicles. Utilizing the same core values and standards that the family-owned auto dealer is known for, Fletcher Jones is set to open its newest Audi location where Highway 73 and the 55 South freeway meet—literally! Complete with an all new management, philosophy and location, Audi Fletcher Jones’ main goal is to provide an exciting experience that every individual should enjoy when shopping for an Audi.

General Manager Dave Gonzalez and General Sales Manager Taylor Bradford are looking forward to the unveiling of the new Audi Fletcher Jones location, set to open in 2020. Growing up with an appreciation for cars thanks to his father, Bradford was first hired at Fletcher Jones’ MercedesBenz of Ontario and quickly learned the ins and outs of the auto business. Following his success at the Ontario location, he was hired at Audi Beverly Hills, another Fletcher Jones company. He quickly caught on to one key component distinguishing Fletcher Jones from other

luxury automotive dealers stating, “At Fletcher Jones, we are not interested in a one-off transaction—we want to be your car people.” Gonzalez began working as a sales manager for Mercedes-Benz Fletcher Jones in Las Vegas back in 2006. Over the next decade, he continued to excel, managing locations in Fremont, California followed by four franchises in the Chicago, Illinois region. Ultimately, Gonzalez was offered the position of General Manager of Fletcher Jones Motorcars in Newport Beach. From humble beginnings as a boy with a passion for cars, to managing the nation’s number one MercedesBenz dealership, Gonzalez’s story truly embodies the American dream. From expert guidance while shopping for an Audi vehicle to preferred owner benefits like complimentary car washes and a relaxing guest lounge, individuals will receive an unrivaled car-buying experience at the new location. Bradford adds, “We really wanted an opportunity to bring that same feeling that customers in the past have felt when buying from Fletcher Jones to our new location here in Orange County.” Whether you’re in the early stages of car shopping or ready to purchase a beautiful new Audi, take a moment out of your week to truly “experience the Fletcher Jones difference.”

Paving the Way FOUNDER AND CEO OF BURNHAM USA EQUITIES SCOTT BURNHAM IS THE PROPERTY PRO OF NEWPORT BEACH WRITTEN BY: MICHELLE JACO PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NIKI CRAM

Deemed an innovator in the industry and a revered pioneer for his creative efforts in revamping a large stretch of Orange County’s retail and office landscape over the last four decades, Scott Burnham, founder and CEO of Burnham USA and BurnhamWard Properties, continues to prove, time and time again, that doing the right thing is good for the community—and for business.

D

Since his graduation at USC, Burnham has applied his innovative, community-driven approach to development throughout Southern California. Within Newport Beach’s Lido District, Burnham has also influenced a renaissance of the area. Burnham is credited with drawing various leading tenants to the Lido District and has been instrumental in reinvigorating the previously sleepy retail scene in the village. He has reimagined storefronts such as Honor Coffee, Jolie, Amour Vert and Aleph Gallery, ARC Butcher + Baker and more. Additionally, he has reinvented what is now considered to be some of Newport’s most creative office spaces, including “3700,” which now

serves as HQ to notable tenants such as, Skin Laundry and Drunk Elephant (skincare product leader and media darling) among many others. The Burnham-Ward team has recently attracted global tech leader SAP to Newport Beach, together with the opening of its HanaHaus, both located within 3366 Via Lido. Parts of the building are open to the public, including the region’s first Blue Bottle Coffee. The Lido endeavors are close to Burnham’s heart, as he is a Newport native with a sincere passion for his hometown and a commitment to doing the right thing when it comes to property ownership. “Our team takes the responsibility of property stewardship very seriously, creating community through property,” he says. “This includes being respectful of the past, creating new concepts while maintaining the architectural and historic character of each property, and working with innovative, like-minded people and municipalities who can support our endeavors. Then, we go a step further to thoughtfully curate each environment with the right tenants who will add something important and special to our community.”

Property Powerhouse • Burnham USA Equities, Inc. was established in 1990, and together with BurnhamWard Properties, the company has thrived in the last few decades, now overseeing a wide portfolio of company-owned assets, including lifestyle centers, office, medical and residential properties.

Dirt by Day, Date by Night THIS FORD RAPTOR CLEANS UP NICELY WRITTEN BY: JAMEE LIND PHOTOGRAPHED BY: AKIN ODEBUNMI MODELS: KATIE BOZNER AND JEREMY GRINACOFF OF BRAND MODEL & TALENT AGENCY, www.brandtalent.net

Sitting in your office parking lot Monday morning, spotted with the mud and the toils of the weekend, is your customized Ford Raptor. You’re obviously upset about the dirt, but you can’t be brought down too far when you know what lies underneath that dried inch of sand. Your only actual worry is getting it cleaned before your dinner date later on tonight.

S

But again, you know that the dirt can be managed; your expectations, however, cannot. When you’re trucking through the dirty bliss of an open California backroad, or zooming past the city lights of downtown, you need a vehicle as diverse and complex as yourself. You already know that the factory presets of a modern-day truck inhibit your free-flowing lifestyle and limit the travel capabilities of both you and your vehicle. That’s why you went with a customized KG Custom Ford Raptor in the first place, to hint at how bold you actually are compared to those around you. A customized Ford Raptor is considered “the best truck in the market,” according to Ruben Pina,

General Manager at KG Custom. Built for both athletes and other high-end professionals, Pina notes that this is a car no one is going to be able to not notice, and that’s exactly what you’re going to need to impress your date tonight—just cleaned up a little first. “In the social way we live, it’s a car that really pulls to our attention,” Pina said, furthering on about how their Ford Raptor caters to the needs of every highend driver. From cold air intakes to customizable brakes, the KG Custom design brings its clients the ultimate horsepower. “You have function, aesthetics and aggressive styling,” said Pina. “Contractors, construction, athletes, guys that want to go surfing— it’s the best, all-around getaway truck.” The car wash is squeezed in after your last meeting, something you were never too worried about in the first place. You are a little worried about how the date will go, but more excited to see what’s in store for the night, with your freshly cleaned customized Ford Raptor making it a much smoother ride (and first impression).
