Erik Hale

I have two areas that I consider home; the small Northern California town of Hughson (pop.1100), that I was raised in and coastal Orange County, where I have lived for the past 10 years raising my family. I have moved around quite a bit due to semi-nomadic parents and a stint in the US Army. Only later in life have I experienced the beauty of community. I started Locale Magazine to focus on what is amazing about where we live and why it is such a unique locale. Our area is overflowing with culture and diverse businesses that I intend to bring into the spotlight. It is my hope that our readers take the time to visit the places we mention, they are truly special.

Coming from a nomadic family, Melissa Lunt has spent equal amounts of her life in Northern California, Florida and Hawaii. Currently a resident of South Laguna, Melissa embodies the soul of the Southern California lifestyle with a passion for creativity. She practices yoga, is an avid reader and does not believe in microwaves. As Senior Project Manager and Designer at the boutique advertising and branding firm Nzsch, she has participated in developing successful brands and campaigns for a diverse clientele.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Ashley Hickson had made yearly visits to her family in sunny Southern California, quickly realizing that there wasn’t anywhere else she would rather live. Ashley found her calling after achieving the position as the editor of the school yearbook and newspaper in high school. When she relocated to Orange County at the age of 17, she began her studies at Chapman University in Old Town Orange. Upon graduation, Ashley pursued her dream and began working with the Orange County Hotel Magazine, where she was a key player in production. Ashley has since moved onward and upward to Locale Magazine where she is currently the “Chaos Manager” and is THE go to girl for everything LOCALE.

Chaos Manager Cameron Oden is a talented photographer from Costa Mesa, California. Cam recognized his passion for photography at a young age and finished High School early so that he could get a jump on his career. This is not, I repeat, not a sushi or sashimi battle. We know that there are great sushi restaurants like Fusion in Laguna Beach, Genkai in Corona Del Mar and Ikko in Costa Mesa. How is sushi different than sushi rolls, you ask? How is filet mignon different than a Philly cheese steak? Sushi and sashimi are judged on availability, freshness, cut and presentation. They are usually savored in small bites and served with chilled Sake in quiet traditional restaurants. Sushi Rolls are much different. The roll is a party of flavors that explode in your mouth, conjured up by creative chefs using unusual ingredients and incredible presentation shared with friends over cold beers and edamame. It is not unusual to find people slapping wood to rock songs at Cal Beach on the Newport Peninsula or throwing back shots at Tommy’s in Tustin. Sushi rolls hold a very unique place in our beach culture and we intend to find out who does it best. We have selected eight restaurants that you may or may not expect to serve sushi rolls. We sent a team of four roll lovers to determine who had the best sushi roll. We judged the contestants on taste, presentation, originality and ambiance. The following eight restaurants were all very high on our list of favorite spots so we knew this would be a very close contest. Buckle up, as we are about to guide you through our SUSHI ROLL THROWDOWN.

Kitiyama nearly won this contest. The head chef Yama joked with the judges as he wielded his ultra sharp knives through the fish almost without looking. If you have not visited Kitiyama it is assuredly worth a visit. The restaurant is not what you would expect as you turn off the 73 access road and into the gated lot. The inside of the restaurant is perfect for business lunches and romantic getaways with its secluded booths and Japanese rooms. The grounds of Kitiyama are immaculate, boasting a rock garden and waterfall beyond the outdoor patio. There is usually a wait at the Sushi Bar where Yama has been holding court for over 30 years, so make sure to arrive early. A seafood company owns Kitiyama, so it was no surprise to us the freshness of the fish. Yama was masterful in presentation and combining flavors. We all agreed that we could not wait to stop back in for more of Yama’s hospitality and wonderful rolls.

Our jaws hit the floor when James pulled out the gold. He had already presented us with the marvelous multi-colored roll when inspiration hit and he shaved gold filings on top of the now named “24K” roll, which looked too nice to eat. James is the manager of Mosun but still likes to get behind the bar to wield his creative influence over the sushi roll menu whenever he can. James was in charge of our stay and it was surely memorable. From the pre-roll selection of sushi in a shot glass to spicy edamame, everything was displayed perfectly.

Reel Standouts

There is nothing like lounging on a patio, sipping white wine as four people buzz around making sure that you are completely accommodated. For those of you that have not been inside Scott’s since the transformation, you are surely missing out. Fabrics have been replaced with lush leather and gold chandeliers with flattering white lights to accent the red walls, fireplaces and rich woods accentuate the thoroughly modernized restaurant. Music played through strategically placed outdoor speakers as we settled into our lounge chairs and indulged on a myriad of dishes. The judges truly felt that Scott’s might have been the overall winner on more than one of the dishes presented.

BEAR

FLAG

FISH CO.

Bear Flag Fish Co. is one of the most popular, up and coming restaurants in Orange County. We were surprised when Thomas (Thos to friends) agreed to participate in our sushi roll battle as the chef. He was pretty sure he would win and ultimately was not far off. Thos greeted us with a concoction I had never witnessed. He had presented a thinly sliced, rice free roll on a bed of salad greens that surrounded a martini glass filled with dressing. We were to pick up the roll along with the salad and dip the combination, into the martini glass. It was an unlikely combination but a huge hit. Fantastic and original. It seems like Bear Flag does everything right. 17

Chef profile: Jose “El Jefe” Cid The Cid doesn’t fall far from the tree. A famous theologian once noted that “the entire fruit is already present in the seed.” Even though the Cid’s (pronounced seeds) use a different spelling, the entire Mahe’ organization is present in this family. I thought it unusual at first that two of the sushi chefs shared a last name. When I pried further I discovered that there were seven Cid’s working for the Mahe’ family between their two locations. The patriarch of the family is

1 m

trusting his every selection with his incredibly decadent concoctions like fried banana, whip cream and Ahi. Mahe’ has embraced the Cid’s family and like with any family dinner, when you sit down it just feels comfortable. You have probably driven by Mahe’ on your way to the Long Beach Grand Prix or to a day of shopping in Belmont Shore. You may have thought, “that’s a cute little place” or said to your spouse “we should stop there the next time we come this way”. But you did not stop. This is well worth the stop. If Mahe’ was closer to your house you would be there all the time. They seem to know everyone that walks in, and not in that “hey, buddy” way you get from someone you met at a wedding once, but more like “good to see you bro, it’s been too long”. The relationship with the customer stems from exceptional service. Toby Reece, the owner, who greeted us when we arrived is that kind of person that makes everyone feel like they just walked into his home. His personality is mirrored in his employee’s actions creating this wonderful atmosphere. They know their customers, know their fish and serve incredibly fresh sushi in great tasting combinations. This is why Mahe’ has won our Vs. Sushi Roll Throwdown.

Jose, but all of the customers have dubbed him “Jefe”. Jefe has rolled Sushi in this area for over 20 years. He started at Daimon’s in Sunset Beach and moved on to Mom’s in Long Beach, then went to Tsunami for a spell before finding a home at Mahe’ over ten years ago. He loves working there so much that his family started joining him in his commutes to work adding six Cid’s to the Mahe’ family over the past decade. It is easy to see how anyone might want to follow Jefe to work as he tantalizes the customers that sit down,

Peanut butter and jelly cupcake.

To some, these words alone are nearly enough to cure even the most persistent sweet tooth. Luckily for us, we do not need to subsist on words when there is a bounty of local cupcake joints that are glad to appease our fix. The cupcake, once reserved for church socials, potlucks and school holidays has become a delicacy and a destination. Cute stores, vibrant walls, timeless packaging and clever taste combinations have given us all a reason to say "yes" to dessert again. Maybe it’s the size of these super cute pastries, but we believe that they should not count towards our daily caloric intake. Put aside your pre-conditioned responses to the dry store-frosted cupcakes, drive or call in an order to one of these fantastic area bakeries, lock your "calorie conscious" in the closet and enjoy.

If you want a cupcake that looks like something your mom made but taste surprisingly better, visit husband and wife team Todd and Leslie Lewis at this bakery in Laguna Niguel. Leslie is a hyper-creative baker that routinely creates cupcakes for her "Cupcake Project" blog that spill over into what you find behind the pastry cases. She sets each day with a sincere goal to simply “Make people happy and treat them to something Divine.”

What makes a gastropub different than my corner bar? The big difference between Haven Gastropub and everyone else is the attention we give to all facets of the operation. Our food stands out as a large factor in setting us apart. We strive to make nearly everything from scratch in our kitchen, including our ketchup. We utilize fresh, seasonal ingredients, sustainable seafood, and do our best to use only humanely treated animals for our meat dishes. The beer selection is extremely different than your average bar. We have 14 unique beers that constantly rotate on tap, and over 60 choices in the bottle. We don't carry anything from mainstream, commercial breweries in the U.S. Nothing average, and nothing that we wouldn't want to drink ourselves. We do the same with the wine and spirits selection. We currently have 45 wines by the glass, always trying to bring unique offerings to our guests. The spirit selection keeps growing, as we find liquors that aren't stocked at your corner bar. We have a selection of bourbons, singlemalt scotches, and whiskeys that is over 50 bottles deep.

What gives you the most enjoyment at Haven?

C

Seeing people have a great time. We just want to give people a place to hang out with their friends, have dinner with their spouse, or bring the family in. We welcome all by appealing to a wide demographic. We do our best to give people an experience that they tell their friends about. We built Haven as the place we would like to spend our time somewhere we would want to go out and eat and have drinks. We really enjoy it when others feel the same way.

Charlie Palmer, Lucca Cafe, SOL Cocina, Mesa, Lola Gaspar. All of these places try to do the same things that we do – they are brave and fearless. They are willing to take chances and elevate the industry for all restaurants in Orange County and beyond. We need more restaurants that are willing to stand apart from the norm. The times, they are a'changing.

So how did you get a half-million people to attend your grand opening? You'd be surprised at how easy that was. The city threw a huge party in the streets to welcome us! Everyone had to see what was going on! Seriously though, the Orange International Street Fair marked our first night of business. We filled every seat and were 3 deep at the bar within 15 minutes of opening our doors. It's the only way to open a restaurant!

What one thing can the at-home chef do to get better results when cooking? Plan ahead. Chop what needs to be chopped, pre-heat your oven, have everything at your fingertips. Organization leads to a more enjoyable cooking experience.

What makes this prawn meal so special and what beer would you pair it with on a hot summer afternoon? These Jumbo Prawns just taste great. The cheesy grits under the prawns, the salsa spilled over the grits, and the glistening bacon wrapped around the prawns. What's not to like? We serve it with Duvel Green here at Haven Gastropub, but any ice cold brew with a hint of citrus will do the job. Just NO Bud Light!

Greg Daniels has been working in the restaurant industry for the past 12 years, working as bartender, manager, cook, and consultant. He joined the team at Haven Gastropub to showcase his version of “gourmet comfort food.” Classically trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Pasadena, CA, he immediately began a career working with the best chefs in Orange County. Under the tutelage of Pascal Olhats of Tradition by Pascal, and then on to Napa Rose with Andrew Sutton, he learned what it means to feed people great food. At Haven Gastropub, he puts out dishes that aren’t found at your neighborhood bar and grill. Examples include mussels steamed in Stone Brewery’s Arrogant Bastard Ale, a roasted neck of lamb, short ribs braised in Firestone IPA, and an almost famous gourmet Haven Burger. Nearly everything is proudly made from scratch, down to the ketchup you’ll have with your fries.

180 magic force tugs at our souls to find water. Even though we rarely give a thought to its value because of its abundance, the comfort we feel in the presence of large bodies of water is ancient and tied to our literal dependence. Whether dipping our toes in a pool, splashing through the surf, or nursing a margarita as the sun dips behind the ocean, we are at ease around water. So, if you have been confined to a cubicle, loosen your tie and make your way to that large body of water that is our backyard. Hop into one of our favorite joints, pull up a west-facing stool, order something served in a frosty glass and enjoy the 180 degree view and 360 degrees of freedom.

“What’s a Schooner?” a girl asks the waitress. “It’s what everyone’s drinking,” she says, pointing at every table in the bar. The rowdy, funloving crowd enjoys their goblets of beer around family-style tables, with old friends and new ones who happen to take a seat nearby. A few people walk in from the beach to grab lunch and a drink while others come to watch the game. Stick around late enough and you might see a parade of costumes from a theme party down the street. The crowd is a mix of college kids and people who have known each other for years, but they all share a love for this laid back pub with a killer ocean view. People flow in and out of Mutt’s like it’s their second home, and this pseudo-family wouldn’t have it any other way. Native Knowledge: For the best views, head up the steps and grab a seat at the ocean-facing bar.

3Thirty3 offers a private view of Newport Marina, where diners sit directly above the rippling water. A woman sits at a bistro table sipping a cocktail and watching the people in the restaurant around her. Colleagues discuss business over a meal in the dining room and men in dress shirts settle in at the bar, having a beer or two before heading home. As the sun fades, the crowd transitions into a nightlife scene. Friends move from the bar to the wrap-around couches overlooking the water and order a round of drinks. The posh lounge area is open late, perfect for a pre-club drink or after-party munchies any night of the week. Native Knowledge: Great spot for a quiet lunch or early drink.

The Rooftop Lounge & Bar

2100 West Oceanfront | Newport Beach | 949.673.2100

1287 S Coast Hwy | Laguna Beach | 949.376.9718

The breathtaking 360-degree view at The Rooftop Lounge is one of the best coastal scenes in Orange County. It takes only half an hour for every seat on the patio to be filled, and those who follow stand against the wall in hopes of a table clearing soon. The bartender tells two girls they can eat on the ledge if they want, but the view is so spectacular that waiting isn’t so hard. This is where one can appreciate the beauty of Laguna Beach away from the fast-paced energy of Main Beach, and the rooftop offers a picturesque view in every direction. The warm weather, cold drinks and awesome atmosphere keep people coming back for more. Native Knowledge: It gets cool even in the summer. Ask for a blue blanket and camp out near a heater.

21 Oceanfront Every aspect of 21 Oceanfront is elegant, romantic and sophisticated in a way that instantly sweeps a woman off her feet. Each dining room provides an intimate setting for couples and small parties to enjoy a glass of wine while admiring the view. Every waiter assists in upholding the fine dining ambience, prepared to fill your glass and meet every request at a moment’s notice. Each diner is treated like family, served and cared for with the utmost respect. This is where new couples fall in love and others celebrate special occasions, or simply enjoy a well-prepared meal in a wonderful place. Native Knowledge: Show up early and take advantage of the people watching and views from the long oak bar.

This is destination dining at its absolute definition. Every element of the restaurant is sexy and chic, from the gorgeous Mediterranean décor to couches where diners lounge surrounded by candles, sipping cocktails and watching the sunset over the Pacific. Javier’s provides all the lavishness and leisure of a South American hotspot where one can indulge any day of the week. Grab an Organic Margarita at the door and enjoy a romantic dinner date or a fun night out with friends. The panoramic view of the coast surrounding the patio is the finishing touch to an unforgettable dining affair. Native Knowledge: This is not your typical flip-flop joint. Dress to impress.

Saturday Morning Breakfast The Beachcomber 15 Crystal Cove | Newport Coast | 949.376.6900

Even with the miles of shore lining Orange County, there are precious few restaurants that reside on the sand. Park across the street and walk under PCH or grab the five minute shuttle for a buck. Upon arrival, do not be dismayed by the wait time. The waiting area is the Pacific Ocean guarded by cliffs dotted with colorful historic cottages. The view is so nice you might just give up your table the first time your name is called. For breakfast, order a coffee and a basket of Beach Beignets. The Bootlegger bar is fully stocked and a great place for a cocktail. Native Knowledge: Show up at 5 and help them raise the Martini flag.

Walking into Duke’s feels like stepping into a tropical party on the beach. A charming Hawaiian girl offers leis to guests as they are led to their table, each with its own spectacular view of waves crashing on the pier. The dining room is filled with families young and old, some grabbing a bite to eat after playing in the ocean and others who are spending the day on Main Street. The Barefoot Bar is where the real fun happens. Surfers order drinks from the tiki hut, eyeing all of the beautiful women in the room. They laugh, flirt and sip their drinks while waiting for their food to arrive. The light-hearted atmosphere encourages everyone to let loose, have fun and enjoy each other’s company. Native Knowledge: Monday is “Aloha Hour” (happy hour) all night. Try something mixed with passion fruit juice.

Family Day Getaway Coliseum Pool & Grill - The Resort at Pelican Hill 22701 Pelican Hill Rd.. South | Newport Coast | 949.467.4676

A Tiger Martini is placed on the table at the Coliseum, its red-orange color matching the sunset beyond it. This Roman-inspired oasis in the hills of Newport Coast has a subdued extravagance that is both enchanting and inviting. On one side of the terrace is a party of ten sipping glasses of wine and tasting decadent desserts, their laughter filling the air. Kids in bathing suits run in and out checking in with parents, yet nothing distracts from the tranquil mood the Coliseum exudes. This is the ideal same-day getaway that helps time stand still for a moment while you unwind. When it’s time to leave, your only thought will be planning your return. Native Knowledge: Free Valet. Wonderful selection of toys for the kids. -Jami Crabtree

Will KNOWS WINE 5 minutes with William Lewis | Sommelier/Managing Partner | The Winery Restaurant & Wine Bar Do you change the wines you drink in the summer? When it comes to wine I have my favorites, but they change with my mood, time of day and above all, the season. During the summer months, I expect to pair wines with the seasonal contemporary California regional cuisine – this means lots of fresh, line-caught fish and flavorful vegetables. On a warm summer day, I find that guests prefer to relax with a nice, crisp glass of wine.

What will you be recommending? Helfrich Gewurztraminer, Alsace, 2007 – a crisp, zingy wine with hints of grapefruit. Halter Ranch Rosé, Paso Robles, 2009 – this is ripe with hints of raspberry, cherry and blood orange, with spicy undertones, and goes great with grilled meats. Levendi, Symphonia, Cabernet, Napa, 2005 – with its black fruit nose and vanilla-violet scents, this is an extremely smooth wine. Robert Weil, Kabinett, Riesling, Germany, 2006 – with just the right balance of peach and lemon flavors rounding out into riper fruit, this wine still remains dry. With the perfect balance between fruit and dry acidity, this is an excellent selection for warmer temperatures.

We know you know wine but what would you suggest with The Winery’s signature YG Pizza? Oh, and if wine’s not your thing, I love an ice-cold White Ale Hoegaarden. With 650 wines we WILL end up finding the wine that’s right for you… after all, that’s my job.

Which wine varietals do you think are the most underrated? Any particular country/region? I like the Cabernet Franc from Viader or the Crocker and Starr bottling are a couple of favorites. The German Robert Weil, Halbtrocken, Riesling Kabinett, 2007 is possibly one of the best white wines in the world. Any vintage of this is great. Perfect balance of fruit, acid and sugar. There is something in the glass for everyone.

Considering everybody is a bit more cash conscious these days, what white and/or red would give the most bang for the buck? On our wine list right now; I like the Louis Martini Cabernet from Sonoma, 2007 simply delicious, The Edward Sellars, Le Thief, 2006/7 red blend from Paso Robles. This is one of those that has some flavor for everyone.

What’s your favorite table wine for the heart conscious, glass-a-day wine drinker? The Patz & Hall, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2007. This red wine does not have too much alcohol, but lots of flavor and “heart conscious”. It goes with most foods

What blends are new and hot?

ABOUT WILLIAM LEWIS Having worked in the restaurant industry for many years, William Lewis, Managing Partner and Sommelier of The Winery Restaurant & Wine Bar has achieved Level II Certified Sommelier with The Court of Master Sommeliers, the examining body for the Master Sommelier Diploma.

If we haven’t visited The WInery yet what makes you special? The Winery Restaurant & Wine Bar features a full-service bar with spirits and beers, but my passion lies in the more than 650 wine selections on hand in our 800-square-foot temperature-controlled cellar. Right now, we are nearing our capacity of 6,500 bottles, so you can count on a great selection – which is key when I have so many discriminating palates gathered under one roof on any given night. 29

MagazineLayout6-17-10.indd 29

New and Hot wines. For us the Edward Sellars Le Thief again, The Decoy red from Duckhorn, this is a Cabernet/Merlot blend with all of the quality from Duckhorn Winery in a second label. The Orin Swift, “Papillon” red blend. All of these are red and blends because they are “crowd pleasers”, easy to drink, with good amount of fruit, spice, oak, and complex finishes but are approachable early. The prices range from $48.00 (Le Thief) to $65.00 (Decoy) to $95.00 for the Papillon.

I understand that female wine makers are starting to make their mark. Is there anyone in particular we should keep an eye out for? Yes. Alison Green Doran with Levendi Winery. She makes a couple of Chardonnays and Cabernets. Great job! She really “listens” to the terrain and the grapes.

For those that like a nice, light dessert aperitif and don’t want the gusto of a port, what would you put in front of them? Maybe something to go with a summer dessert? Try a nice light dessert sparkling wine. This has the sweetness that you need, but not the weight. This pairs well with lighter styled desserts such as fruit tarts, cakes, soufflés, sorbets and mousses, both chilled and warm. There are a few out there with great value. The Winery Restaurant & Wine Bar is located at The District in Tustin (2647 Park Avenue, Tustin, California 92782). For more information, call (714) 258-7600 or visit www.TheWineryRestaurant.net.

Bella Bleu Harper’s Westerly Boutique Sydney Michelle Shop L. Herman

Shop L. Hermann: 357 N. Old Newport Blvd., Newport Beach

That’s What She Said. All right ladies. I am sure you are wondering who I am and why I am shouting at you from the seat of my fixed gear bicycle, in heels no less. My name is Sam and I am here to guide you through your recovery. Close your eyes. Image tonight is “girls night out”- dinner, cocktails, dancing. What are you wearing? Now open your eyes. Look in your closet. Do you own that imaginary outfit? I Didn’t think so. I get it, you’re busy. You hardly have enough time for yourself in between work, errands, and the kids. Finger paint has become your makeup and your idea of fun is grocery shopping for tomorrow morning’s staff breakfast. Yoga pants, tank top, Nike’s, and a USC hat have become your daily uniform, much like the house robe and curlers were in our mothers generation. It’s time to make a change, literally. Grab your bike and follow me as we check out the best our area has to offer.

OK. Kickstands down. I know that was a little bit of a workout but a smaller size never hurt anyone. Our first stop is in Newport Beach at Haute Cakes for a Mona's Breakfast of egg whites and oatmeal. Don't skip this meal because we have some shopping to do. The first shop is only a few pedals away.

Head Over Heels:

462 E. 17th St., Costa Mesa

Ok, first spot is for our first love, shoes. These are your dream shoes at what your husband wish they would cost. They may not be red on the bottom, but they are cute and will not break the budget. They have aisles upon aisles of shoes, jewelry and candy and SHOES. Just across the street now (I know it is a little tricky to pedal with the new shoes but you’ll deal), no heavy peddling yet.

Bella Bleu:

333 E. 17th St., Costa Mesa

Here, it’s all about looks and fit, not the label. Eclectic jewelry, flirty tops, and fun dresses are surrounded by accessories and beyond. You definitely won’t leave Bella Bleu feeling guilty.

This next boutique is easy too. It is a little harder to pedal with a full bag, but who's complaining? I know what you are thinking (we are stopping here?) but this place is a FIND. Patina is an ultra-bohemian boutique overflowing with goodies inside, a cottage behind a car wash. This is the definition of a hidden gem.

Patina:

178 Wells Place, Costa Mesa

The boutique is divided into 3 rooms, as it is a house. You first step into the accessories room where you are surrounded by jewelry and other accessories. Pick out some jewelry by Nicole Richie’s House of Harlow 1960 from one of the glass cases. As you move through the house, try on some bohemian pieces by Rebecca Taylor and Patterson J. Kincaid. If vintage pieces are your thing (everyone should have a few), Patina also offers the cutest throwbacks. If you haven’t shopped at Patina, you haven’t shopped in Orange County. Trust me now and thank me later.

Back on the bicycles ladies. Next time, you will bring a backpack.

Ok, quick detour as we get in some downhill to see Laurie at Shop L. Hermann. Tucked into a wooden shopping center across from HOAG Hospital (where your husband will be when he finds out what we spent today) is a tiny shop with a flair for finding treasures. Pedaling back up Newport Blvd we coast to a stop at my favorite affordable fashion boutique. Valerie never fails to say "hey gorgeous" when you walk in and that is often times worth the stop.

Hey Gorgeous!:

1808 Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa

Playful outfits line this tiny shop. It is small but that allows her to turn her looks quickly. If you see something here you should grab it (super reasonable) before its gone for good.

Getting tired? Mojito's at Habana

on me.

Now pedal. Feeling better? Good. Lets walk next door to a place I adore. Treasury Dept.:

2930 Bristol St., Costa Mesa

The items in this store can’t be located anywhere else. You won’t find the usual suspects here, but what you will find is one-of-a-kind pieces from unknown designers such as BreannaLee, Guy Baxter, and American Gold. Sounds expensive, doesn’t it? You thought wrong. Everything in the store is sold at a fraction of the actual market price. The Treasury Dept. offers clothes with a vintage vibe if you’re in the mood for a throw back, or you can even find clothes with an architectural edge if you’re more of the modern type. This one-stopshop is an absolute must.

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. But this is no mirage, my friends. This is the Treasury Dept.

Ok. Now we will see if the salad we had at the Gypsy Den was enough or if we should have hit up Valhalla Table for sausages. Four miles of heavy pedaling along the back bay later we arrive on Balboa Island. No chocolate covered frozen bananas today, it is summer by the way.

Sydney Michelle:

307 Marine Ave., Newport Beach

If you’re looking to dress like a native this is the place to go. With this location along with its LA counterpart, Sydney Michelle is a favorite of the stars. The bright pink interior, beachy location, and playful clothing make this boutique the ultimate California girl experience. They stock everything from comfy James Perse and 291 sweats to chic Philip Lim and Whitley Kros dresses, this boutique is loaded.

This is going to be a long ride. Good thing there is plenty of beautiful coast and shops between here and our next destination in Laguna beach. On your left we are now passing some of our favorite stops (too many stores and not enough time).

Wave to Erica! Fantastic new reincarnation. She never fails to impress. We will stop here next time.

funky prints, and distressed denim to create edgy yet feminine looks. The attitude doesn’t stop at the clothes, however. The shoes, bags, and jewelry also have a bit of a twang. Tap into your “funkiness” and let loose at LF.

Sasha:

550 South Coast Highway, Laguna Beach

After that little uphill climb we should catch our wind at this adorable boutique. The namesake can always be found behind at this store pointing out staples, jewelry and her own line of shoes. Upscale beach wear abounds in this land of tourist shops. Load up everyone. 2 more blocks and we can call it a day. The last stop is definitely worth it.

H.:

1045 South Coast Highway, Laguna Beach

If H. were your closet we would not be here today. The newest addition to the many H. Lorenzo stores in Los Angeles, this spacious store, has such an array of clothing and accessories that you may want to block out a couple of hours for your return visit. H. has tables of jeans, shorts, and t-shirts surrounded by racks upon racks of dresses made of luxurious fabrics, jackets with breathtaking silhouettes, and tops so beautiful you wonder if you’re worthy enough to even take a glimpse. Haute Hippie, Marc Jacobs, and Victor & Rolf are only three of the numerous design labels you can find here at H. This is the perfect place to buy that statement piece you’ve been searching high and low for. If you’re ever going to splurge, do it here. It’s almost impossible not to. Leave the bikes and lets walk down to The rooftop bar above K’YA for some happy hour priced drinks.

How’d you do? Westerly Boutique: 2908 E. Coast Hwy Corona Del Mar

Wave to Lindsey! She carries “The” labels you want. We love this shop but will stop again soon. After an easy five mile jaunt along the coast passing Crystal Cove, Ruby’s Shake Shack, Fetneh Blake and Las Brisas we cruise downhill past The Cottage and can now coast into our next stop.

Well this is where I leave you. I sure had fun burning calories and heating up your plastic. I hope I opened your eyes and your wallet. Today is a day to move forward, put the recession behind us and start looking cute again.

Until next time…..Stay Beautiful Ladies! -Samantha Korb

something lovely about Wednesdays. For me, it is the one day in the week I have no class, no clock-in time, and all my town’s wonders are available to me. I spend such days buzzing around -- and all this activity makes me hungry. I know a special local secret: If you bring your old beach towel to Generic Youth at 1609 Pomona Avenue in Costa Mesa on a Wednesday afternoon, they will feed you lunch. I am a starving college student and writer, so a deal like this speaks straight to my soul. With the sun shining in a way that says summer is on the heels of today, I skip over there in a spring dress and rainbow sandals. High on the list of reasons why I love this place is that it is always crawling with adorably stylish, surf-soaked boys. Folks at Generic Youth are close to the heart of all of us local riffraff who call Costa Mesa home. The vibe at Generic Youth is reminiscent of the surf culture Costa Mesa was built on, as welcoming as a beach barbecue with your best friends. With burgers hot on the grill and the sound of classic oldies wafting through the open doors, it feels like trade winds have brought me to the right place for a perfect afternoon. Generic Youth is the brain child of Jeff Yokoyama and his daughter CoCo. They started the environmentally conscious company in 2006, but Jeff is no newbie to the industry. Jeff has seen success since the ’80s, starting companies such as Maui and Sons, Pirate Surf, and Modern Amusement. The man is truly gifted and dreams up all the designs himself before passing them to Sergio Cigüil, the master of in-house creation. During my visit, I caught a glimpse of Sergio working on some seriously stylish samples of pea coats for fall. In the space where all the magic happens, beautiful fabrics tower to the ceiling and piles of used beach towels await their rebirth. GY runs on the concept of recycling and reuse.

space offers everything from furniture, art, handmade clothing, GY’s own line of hot sauce and even haircuts. If asked, they probably would even read your tarot cards.

Everything is made from deconstructed clothing and end rolls of fabric that might otherwise be considered waste. The minds at GY covet what some see as discards, or even trash, to create beautiful clothing that are gems for everyone else. The message is loud and clear for all to see in the art posted on GY’s walls. Large-format Gap advertisements retrieved from a dumpster have been reworked and collaged to express

Costa Mesa is the only place you can find these items unless you happen to find yourself in Kamakura, Japan, where GY opened a second store in March. Keeping things intimate makes them seem considerably more innovative than everyone else. “Kinda like a club” says Scott Andrews, a familiar face at Generic Youth, “only everyone’s invited.” At GY, I get the same feeling as when I go out vintage shopping and find something I just cannot live without. Because each item is handmade and unique, there is that moment

Large-format Gap advertisements retrieved from a dumpster have been reworked and collaged to express the designers’ concern for improving the environment. the designers’ concern for improving the environment. These days most companies simply say they are green and yet continue to discard massive amounts of material on a daily basis. It is not enough to simply talk change; one must also truly embody the ideals of it. GY does that to the fullest. As I peruse the items, two adorable interns work diligently -- cutting fabric on a picnic table inside the store. They make both men’s and women’s clothing, with many pieces equally appealing to both. My eyes are drawn to a selection of vintage Quicksilver board shorts from Jeff’s private collection. I am also intrigued by several new sweatshirts crafted from used beach towels that would perfectly complement my summer wardrobe. Mounds of clothing and creations are there for me to explore in the rather small space they call home. I love this store. It feels like art in motion and appeals to the artist in me -- every time I leave I go home to create something beautiful. The

of sensing the fashion gods have brought you there for a reason – it’s fashion fate. On this Wednesday, having experienced several such moments, I venture back outside for a burger and some sunshine. We all lead busy lives, but everyone needs time to take it slow and enjoy the day. So, while you are in Costa Mesa for lunch, why not take a moment to stop

by and see what’s going on at 1609 Pomona Avenue. As Dave Allee of Almond surfboards told me, “This is the only time of the week I close my shop -- Burger Wednesday.” I say cheers to that, Dave, cheers to that. - Erin Belair

My name is Erin Belair. I am a local writer living in Costa Mesa. Just graduating with a degree in creative writing from UC Irvine. I was given the chance to write this piece for the first issue of Locale Magazine. I was thrilled with the chance to flex my skills so soon after graduation, but after finding out my first assignment was on boxing I felt something close to terrified. I had never hit anyone or anything in my life, aside from the books. I was not even sure if I physically possessed the capabilities. A million thoughts were racing through my mind as I drove to the very end of 16th street on the west side of Costa Mesa in search of RVCA headquarters. I was nervous in the sort of way, like the first day of school or going on a first date. I had never done anything like this in my life. I couldn’t believe the luck of my life. I was invited to RVCA for a boxing lesson in their private gym with world famous boxing coach Jason Parillo. I truly had no idea what to expect, and my assignment was to capture every twist, duck, and punch of the experience. I quickly realized that this was why I became a writer, and the variety of situations I will find myself in are well worth the hard work. Everything about the morning made me nervous. RVCA is a locally based company that has spanned the globe in popularity, with representation across North America, Europe, and Asia. I have always been a huge fan of what they do, and just going to their headquarters seemed to be one of the most unique things I have had the chance to do, RVCA has always been at the forefront of fashion and art trends. I have attended countless parties in Costa Mesa thrown by RVCA in the positive sponsorship of local art, progress, music, and surfing. While they have always been a presence in the surf and skate culture, in recent years RVCA has expanded their team of sponsored athletes to include professionally trained fighters, such as BJ Penn and Vitor Belfort. RVCA’s dedication to these athletes includes owner Pat Tenore decision to convert a section of their warehouse into a state of the art training facility in 2009, including a 30 foot fighting cage. This was my final destination. 50

back to the lobby. With anticipation mounting, Parillo arrived. He led me back to the gym and as I followed I was captivated by all the large format prints from the talented RVCA photographers and I tried to catch glimpses of the new clothes hanging on long endless rows behind school yard metal fencing. While he introduced himself I was surprised by his small stature. His formative power exuded and that was enough to make me feel weak in the knees. Although we stood eye to eye, when I shook his strong scarred hand I thought quickly of how many faces it had come in contact with over the course of his career.

Before going to RVCA I did a little online research, like any skilled writer would, on the importance of boxing and the low down on boxing coach extraordinaire Jason Parillo. I learned that many of the fighters Parillo works with fight for the MMA arena, Mixed Martial Arts. I didn’t know much about the sport before this, but I am now convinced it takes a dedication and skill level that most people would need a lifetime to cultivate. MMA combines several types of fighting disciplines such as jiu jitsu, kickboxing, wrestling, Thai boxing and traditional boxing, just to name a few. Parillo’s coaching focuses the fighters on the art of traditional boxing. It doesn’t happen often, but ideally a fight will not go beyond the point of standing and striking. Boxing skills are essentials. Jason kept reiterating that those in the know of boxing, “80 to 90 percent of fights end up on the floor, but 100 percent start on the feet.” The seriousness dedicated to our session told me that boxing was more than a sport, a pastime, or even a job to Parillo. He explained to me how, “a trainer can count your reps and run you through the fundamentals of a workout, but a coach will add inches to a person.” Parillo is most definitely a coach, in every sense of the word. I learned the truth of those words when interviewing Parillo. A few more people filtered into the gym to prepare for Parillo’s next training session with Vitor Belfort. When Belfort arrived I was stunned by the sheer massiveness of his person. He towered over me in the way I would expect someone in his profession to, but to experience it in real life was awesome. He reminded he me of one of the greek titans I spent so much time reading about in school. The width of his arm was that of my neck, and when I shook his hand I was made fully aware of the power behind them. I could see exactly what Parillo had meant when he described the essence of being a coach. The strength, the power, and the control that I could see in Belfort was a true testimony to the art of boxing Jason had instilled to me over the course of the day. Once I arrived, parked my car on the quiet street, and found my way inside, I told the pretty receptionist that I was here for my

session with Jason Parillo. I tried to sound like a confident fighter going in to kick some butt. Surprisingly she let me through, and I wandered through the typical warehouse, then there was the gym I had heard so much about. I had a good five minutes in there before someone realized that I should be waiting in the lobby. A stereotypically artistic looking man in a flannel and horn-rimmed glasses escorted me back out to the receptionist to wait for Jason. Within those precious five minutes before I was taken back to the lobby I got an incredible impression of the space. It was early in the morning and the gym was completely empty. I could hear people working in the warehouse, sorting massive amounts of fabulous clothing. I felt as if I had stumbled onto an alien planet. I walked out onto the mats, my feet digging into the soft flooring with each step; later being scolded for having on shoes. On the left side were two huge mirrors and in front of me hung a dozen different punching bags varying form the size of my head to larger than my entire body. I had really started to question what I was doing there, how totally out of my element I was, the anxiety quickly began to grow. Then, there it was. Behind the bags. The 30 foot fighting cage. It was much larger and much scarier than I had ever imagined; this was the real thing literally the same thing you see on television, but far more intimidating in person. Reality was setting in, I am going to be inside of that thing. In that moment while I stood there in shock and awe, the man with the glasses showed up to take me

Having seen the gym once before at this point, I found it easier to keep my gaping jaw in check, and now noticed how beautifully the place was put together. I was impressed, but not surprised because if anyone could make a gym look like a work of art it would be RVCA. The space is simultaneously calming and serious, using whites, grays and blacks for nearly everything inside the gym, creating an aesthetically pleasing environment. It evokes an air of focus and dedication to the art of the MMA craft. In addition to the mats and the cage the gym is also outfitted with step and rowing machines, treadmills, and a seating area with a flat screen t.v. and even PlayStation. Lastly, I noticed two walls entirely covered in what looked to be hieroglyphics, but in actuality they are amazing fonts and creative design listing the names of those who work in the gym. I felt like I had been let into a secret club, and my appreciation for the opportunity began to relieve my anxiety. Just as I suspected, Parillo was straight down to business. He taped both of my hands, covering them from the knuckles and past my wrists. He then found the cleanest pair of gloves that existed in the gym and tightly laced them up for me. My hands were lost and instantly sweating inside the massive white gloves. I was starting to look like a boxer and I became more excited. While Parillo did this he told me briefly about his career and what it is he does, local to Costa Mesa, he works out of the RVCA gym training professional athletes and training clients he has maintained relationships with for over ten years, which includes Tenore. He helped open LA boxing in 1992 and taught personal and group lessons there for nearly 17 years. While a majority of young athletes grow up playing typical sports like soccer, baseball and basketball, Parillo began swinging only one thing - fists. He began martial arts at the age ten, kickboxing at fifteen, and finally fell in love with boxing shortly after under the supervision of Coach Jesse Reed in Westminster, California. Fighting in both the amateur and professional ranks, Parillo’s career was cut short after sustaining a detached retina and experiencing nerve damage in his left hand. Parillo showed me a thick scar running nearly

the entire length of his left arm from three surgeries to his elbow. There were two scars near his left eye and a fresh cut to his upper lip; I must admit I began to find these battle wounds rather sexy. I suppose that goes to show that the old saying, ‘chicks dig scars’ is actually true.

grasping the movements and I was more surprised when he took me up into the fighting cage for some real punches. It was elevated from the rest of the gym so once inside I could see over everything else, it’s ominous presence now discovered. Inside the ring was firmer than the mats we had been on, we were now literally caged in surrounded by white

We went out onto the mats and this time I took off my tennis shoes and socks. The gray mats clung to me feet and the air the air was heavy with a thick layer of salt and sweat that seemed to emanate from the gloves and mats that sat in the far corner. Once in front of the full length mirror I laughed at myself because I had spent more time

Parillo guided me into what would be my first boxing stance, and then started showing me the basic techniques of weight and balance. He emphasized that as a woman my power and balance are coming from my hips. With my weight on the balls of my feet, and my knees slightly bent, I started throwing jabs and hooks while twisting my hips, and pushing with my back leg for the final bit of force. It was an interesting feeling throwing punches in the air at nothing, but I tried to focus on the movement of my legs and hips. It only took a few moments before I realized that this is a serious workout. It was a heat in my body I have never felt before that started at the back of my neck and crept over my shoulders; I could feel my thighs and waist stretching and warming as I squatted and twisted in front of the mirror.

metal fencing and padded post that wore the RVCA name. The magnitude of force usually exuded in this ring kept running through my mind, unable to ignore the images of serious fighters training where I was now standing.

I was surprised when Parillo said that I was

Parillo hit the buzzer to start our round, and

the sound was something I’ve only heard in the movies. It pumped me up and I began bouncing around in the way I had seen Sylvester Stallone do in every Rocky movie. He wore hand pads and at first I wasn’t sure how hard to hit them, but I quickly realized I was allowed to hit them as hard as possible. He was kind not to laugh at my meager punches, I cannot believe the power he must withstand when he is on the receiving end of Penn. I am sure, compared to the fighters he works worth, my punches were laughable landing on his hands. I used the same movements I had learned in front of the mirror to land the punches in his gloves. My first few attempts were questionable, but once I made a solid connection with my right fist to his left glove, everything changed. It felt right. It felt unlike anything I have ever felt in my life. I could feel it in my bones, and the crisp popping sound it made echoed through the cage. There may have been other noise, there may have even been music playing, but all I could here was Parillo saying, “right, left, right, right,” and my glove cutting through the air before that perfect “pop”. I could tell by the shocked look on his face that he was surprised not only by the effort I was putting into it, but also by the punch my novice arms could pack. After a few minutes the buzzer would sound and drag me back to reality. Between rounds, I was given a moment to breath and Parillo would go over what I was doing well and where I was falling short. The one thing I couldn’t seem to get every time was the slight twist of my wrist making my fist go from vertical to horizontal, which was the final element in that connection. As each round went by and I began to grow more tired, I became aware of how many facets of my body were being used in this sport. My thighs and shoulders were burning, my wrists and elbows felt like they were becoming unhinged, I wanted to keep going. What was originally an assignment, work, just another Wednesday, was now becoming a necessary part of my life. I clenched my jaw and gritted my teeth in the last round and ...Continued on page 96

I’d like to make something clear, right off the bat, I’m from the wonderful city of chicago. to the contrary of most, i actually prefer the Snow and sub-zero temps of the midwest.

Now that I’m a resident of southern California, I thought I should try and immerse myself in the SoCal way of life. Step 1. Yoga. I’ve tackled regular Yoga over the past couple of months, but the time has come to move upward and onward to Bikram Yoga.

That said, I’ve never participated in Bikram Yoga. So, the thought of voluntarily locking myself in a 110-degree room surrounded by halfnaked strangers for an hour and a half with an instructor telling me to stand like a tree, was not exactly my idea of fun. Being the open-minded person that I am, I never put the kibosh on anything new.

I decided on a Tuesday morning that I would attend my first Bikram Yoga class on Thursday night. Immediately after making that decision, I began to mentally prepare myself for the extreme conditions my body would endure in a mere 58 hours and counting. Before I knew it, it was Thursday night. I threw on some black spandex shorts and a black racer back tank

(black is slimming, right?) and hit the road with my A/C on full blast. I shivered my way to Costa Mesa and there I was- completely out of my element. I entered the Bikram studio and was slapped in the face with heat and humidity. I then heard a voice say, “Just wait ‘till you get in the room.”. Wonderful. I introduced myself to Patrice Simon, the owner’s wife, who was nice enough to not look at me as if I were an alien. Patrice then instructed me to grab a mat that was hanging from one of the racks just outside the front doors. I stepped outside to do just that and thought to myself, “this is my last chance to escape.” Ignoring the devil on my shoulder, I walked back

inside, grabbed a handful of towels and signed myself in. I was briefed by our instructor prior to the hour and a half I would be spending in his lair while I tried to internally motivate myself. I was told to kneel down and keep my head above my heart if I felt “off.” Well, I thought, how do you define off? As I shook off my cynicism along with my flipflops, I walked into the room that could quite possibly become my grave. People were already laying on their backs completely immobile waiting for the session to begin. Brilliant, I thought. Yes, it was excruciatingly hot and on top of that, it was so humid

I could have taken scissors to the air. But the four fans on the ceiling were making it, relatively speaking, tolerable. The clock struck 8:30 and the fans began to cease spinning. This was it.

our instructor because he clearly knew more than I. After the standing portion of the class we moved onto our backs. I had never been so elated to stare at a ceiling. In between floor poses we were

Not only was I doing good for my body, but this was like a form of therapy without the verbal emotional spill. I had already begun to sweat and we hadn’t even struck our first pose. I, along with one other girl, was introduced to our class as a newcomer to the world of Bikram. As if I wasn’t going to stick out like a sore thumb already, I had just been branded in public. It was probably for my own good, God forbid I fall over in tree pose. Now that I felt completely vulnerable and naked, I decided to try and embrace the class. I was not here to judge, I was here to try something new. The first 20 minutes of class I moved through the poses like a limber cat, being the ex-gymnast that I am, I sweat at the rate of a 300 lb. man. To put that in perspective, some people call me pocked-sized. The only thing that brought me some level of comfort was continually wiping myself with a towel. Prior to this moment, I didn’t know shins could produce their own sweat. I was then publicly shunned as our instructor suggested to stop wiping myself with a towel because I was putting the toxins back into my body. Talk about a lose-lose situation. If I continue to wipe my sweat with a towel I would defeat the entire purpose of the class, but if I stop wiping sweat with a towel I would drink my sweat as if it were a beverage. To ensure I get the most out of this experience, I put the towel down and glued my top lip to my bottom lip. After the first 20 minutes I was actually getting used to the hot and humid conditions. I focused on my physical movements and listened to

MagazineLayout6-17-10.indd 58

Before I knew it, the hour and a half had ended. I was coming back down to earth with my eyes closed still immobile on my back. Contrary to my own assumption, I actually remained in that position for a few minutes after class ended. Slowly I emerged feeling like a whole new woman. I thanked my instructor and exited the room to talk with Jeff and Patrice about my experience. They told me I was glowing and looked like I handled Bikram like a champ. They spoke the truth.

able to just lie on our backs as our instructor turned the fans back on. Pure ecstasy. I heard his voice say,

As I walked out of the studio, down the stairs, and to my car, I found myself smiling for no apparent reason. I felt my blood flowing, I felt clean

“Just be present. Stay in the room…”

and free of toxins. I would without a doubt take this class again, maybe I will be become a Bikram junkie.

I felt my cynicism start to erupt and then I thought to myself, “Where else would I go? Even if I wanted to escape this room I would move at the pace of a sloth.” I mentally slapped myself for those thoughts and took the advice of our instructor, I cleared my mind and immediately felt a sense of power and energy that I had never felt before. This definitely would not be my last time taking Bikram Yoga.

As I approached my car, my friend, who also attended the class with me, rolled down her car window and asked me, “So how are you doin’?” I responded, “I’m floating! Let’s go run a marathon!” For fear of my physical safety, I spared myself the strain of a marathon and went home. What I thought was going to be an unpleasant experience, ended up being the best ninety minutes of my week. I really enjoyed the hot yoga, may I suggest you try it, too! -Samantha Korb 2937

The Lost Art of

he old Marty Robbins tune, El Paso, croons through speakers. A client in a red patent-leather chrome chair is eased into a near full-reclining position. The intoxicating aroma of sandalwood fills the air as the hum of the lather machine warms the shaving cream to a perfect temperature. Standing next to his client, Donnie “Hawleywood Chops” Hawley expertly drags his straight razor in exaggerated strokes across the long leather razor strap attached to the chair. “Need a cold one?” someone asks without regard to common civility. “Sure,” the client answers, his head rising hesitantly, all too aware of the sharp instruments hovering close by. Inside the walls of the Hawleywood’s Barbershop in Costa Mesa is a time much different than ours today. The era of the shop is stuck firmly between The Andy Griffith Show and Happy Days, sights and smells

included. This is your fathers’ traditional shop with a few tattooed exceptions. A certain air of class wafts through this gentleman’s shop that reassures us that the tattoos are not indicative of the atmosphere. Hawley, the shop owner, is emphatic about “The Rules.” He admonishes the shop assistants for not keeping towels stocked or sweeping the floor to his standards and is especially hot-pressed about the dress code. On this Saturday, we find the barbers “suited and booted” in their Saturday best. They wear skinny black ties, bloused trousers and buttoned vests covered by crisp white short-sleeved jackets with oversized silver zippers promptly tucked underneath their starched collars. Hawley finishes sharpening his razor blade and returns it to its case. He now dips the beaver brush into the bowl of steaming lather where

he works up a nice foam. As the lather is allowed to “set up”, he removes a steaming towel from the heater, juggling it back and forth in his hands like pizza dough before he lays it evenly over his customer’s face. Thirty seconds later, the towel is removed and the man in the chair takes a long pull from the cold Pabst waiting in his right hand. It is hard to pinpoint a time when men in America stopped going to a true-blue barber. Maybe it was the 70’s when long hair was all the rage, or possibly the 80’s when a period of excess resisted the frugality of the barber’s chair. Whatever fad removed the luster, the modern longing for normalcy and simpler times have sent customers back in packs. An appointment is necessary to get a cut or shave at Hawleywood’s. In fact, it is the first question you are asked when you call or when you enter. There are

The barber moves expertly around the man’s face where he hovers, stares and finally dives side to side checking the length of the sideburns. The shave is finished but the experience is not. Donnie raises his client into a sitting position and applies aftershave that heats the skin, moments later waving his hands to cool the burn of the alcohol. n Newport Harbor, even the warmest summer days can begin with a chill. As my family and I pulled our luggage up the ramps that lead into the belly of the Catalina Flyer, it proved to be a difficult ascent: a coastal eddy had engulfed the harbor, dropping the temperature by ten degrees and misting morning dew on the plank. As we left our luggage to find a seat, I let my imagination wander to a simpler Catalina Island timecirca grandparents. I saw the ladies and gentlemen boarding the S.S. Catalina in their summer best, bound for this three hour coastal trip. I imagined cabin boys loading steamer trunks and men smoking pipes while their pomade gleamed in the sunshine. There were women noshing on jumbo shrimp and sipping champagne as the horn blew for departure. The loud pull of the departure siren snapped

me back to present day. I was surrounded by the same charming spirits of past, yet modern day customs had plainly taken over. Jeans and flip-flops replaced smart suits and crisp dresses while the glistening hair came in the form of spiky ‘dos, compliments of hair gel. The ladies were drinking Bloody Marys and mimosas. Despite the modern twists, the excitement in the eyes of the passengers mimicked those of our predecessors. As we approached Santa Catalina Island, the eddy began to lift and the sun shone down on the jewel that is Avalon. Although the island is over twenty-two miles long and eight miles wide, the life Glenmore Plaza Hotel of Catalina thrives in the one square mile encompassing the city limits of Avalon. The hotels and homes along the shore mimic an accomplished artist’s pallet and boast greens, pinks, reds and blues. If you squint a little,

Catalina thrives in the one square mile encompassing the city limits of Avalon.

Avalon might look like any costal town along the Riviera. As we disembarked, we were immediately greeted by the shuttle driver who would take us to our lodgings for the weekend at the Glenmore Plaza. Upon our arrival, our room was not quite ready but the accommodating

staff allowed us to stow our luggage while we ventured out to see what Avalon had to offer. Island life can be a little difficult to adjust to. Coming from Orange County, we are eternally readying a response to the often asked “what are we going to do now?” In Avalon, it took us a few hours to comprehend the idea of simply relaxing. After all, this was the purpose of our getaway. Mexican food is a safe bet in any coastal Southern California town, so we decided to dine at Mi Casita Restaurant on Catalina Street. We were warmly greeted and I was comforted to see that we would dine in a red vinyl booth near an open window. The sun was on my back as I finished my 18oz margarita on the rocks and noticed that the chill I had felt earlier was starting to fade. We finished our lunch and made our way back to the historic Glenmore Plaza Hotel. The hotel, originally built in 1881, is a true Victorian with wood paneling and tooth-edged crown molding throughout all four floors. The building has a rich history that includes survival of two

fires that otherwise demolished the city of Avalon. In short, the Glenmore is one of the most unique places to stay on the island. Jimmy, the proprietor’s son, led me on a tour of the Amelia Earhart and Clark Gable suites which are offered among the fifty rooms at the hotel. My imagination got the better of me again as I peered into Gable’s suite with its lime green walls, 1940-esque furniture and wooden spiral staircase in the center of the room. I almost saw Mr. Gable himself, taking a break from a day of Glenmore Plaza Hotel Bedroom shooting Mutiny on the Bounty while dealing cards to a table of men in their high-waisted pants and open-collared dress shirts. I walked past this imaginary group and ascended the staircase to the circular bedroom above. As I crested the stairs, I gasped at the 240 degree views on the city, bay and casino. According to Jimmy, this area had once been a pigeon coop. I couldn’t help but think that this

magnificent room had once been a colossal waste of real estate. After settling into our room, we decided to do a little exploring. We walked along the water towards the Casino. To my surprise, I discovered that gambling has never been allowed at the Casino on Catalina. In fact, the word casino describes a gathering place that offers a myriad of activities. We sat on a seawall for quite some time, watching divers awkwardly enter and exit the ocean up a series of fifteen rocky steps in an attempt to become open-water certified. As we were leaving the Casino, we noticed a blood red golf cart (not an unusual sight as there are over 1200 on the island) with a sign from a late night walking ghost tour. We called and made a reservation to meet with a group at 8:00 PM after dinner. Walking, shopping and napping balanced our afternoon before we headed to dinner. The napping occurred at the Sea Breeze Day Spa where I had booked massages for my wife and me (reservations strongly advised) for the late afternoon. Lourdes, the owner, was welcoming and accommodating- she even worked my

know what’s going on in Catalina, I recommend skipping the tourist sites and pulling up a stool at Steve’s Steakhouse.

We finished our dinner and made our way towards the flashing flashlight near the Casino- it was time Upon Jimmy’s recommendation, for our walking ghost tour we walked one black from the of Catalina Island. When we hotel to Steve’s Steakhouse arrived, there was a group of where we were greeted by twenty holding flashlights and Steve himself. Steve suggested staircases and down dark alleys, all the while the current Taste of Avalon champion dish- the learning about hauntings and tales of ghost flank steak with mushrooms and caramelized sightings. I was relatively unaware of our exact location until I looked up with apprehension onions. It did not disappoint. If you want to

One last check to make sure I am fastened in, say a little prayer, now jump. Standing at the top of "Hog's Back" high in the hills above Catalina, I needed a little inspiration. "Come on honey!” my wife encouraged, "You will be fine, a ten year old girl just went and she lived.” The thought of gliding over tree tops at speeds of 40-45 MPH had always seemed intriguing when looking in brochures or watch someone else try it on TV or in a movie. "I would like to try that someday," I would hear myself say nearly every time witnessing someone "zip-lining" over some remote jungle or forest. Now that I was here, however, I was not as courageous.

The Santa Catalina Island Company has spent $11M returning Catalina Island to its roots as a vacation destination for the family. They have completely remodeled the Pavilion Hotel and turned the Descano Beach Club into something you would expect to find in Miami Beach. They have also added the Zip Line Eco Tour, Sea Trek Undersea Adventure and a GPS walking tour. Walking sounds pretty good right now. "Ok, OK, I am going," I respond to my now somewhat despondent family. "I am just making sure it is safe for you guys, sheesh". So here I go, jumping off a perfectly good platform, free-floating 300 ft. above the canyon floor. Did he say 300 ft.? I wonder aloud. "GO DAD" I hear from my supporting brood.

and realized that the tour had stopped directly in front of our hotel. The chill had returned. I listened to stories of ghosts and hauntings that were appropriate for a Victorian hotel built in the 1800s and were not necessarily disturbing when it was someone else’s home for the night. I approached the tour Steve’s Steak House Bar & Grille guide as cool as I could and asked her with a nudge, if the stories about the Glenmore were true. They were, as far as she knew. I later confirmed this with Jack- a long time resident and night manager at the hotel. Sleep would be hard to come by tonight. We woke up Sunday morning and made our way to the lobby for the traditional continental fair of oatmeal and muffins. I grabbed a paper and we went back up to our room to enjoy the main reason we came to Catalina: some good old-fashioned sleep. Now feeling completely rested, we decided to explore the island. Steve (of the famed steakhouse) graciously offered to loan us his golf cart and we gladly accepted and took a spin past the country club, campgrounds and out to the botanical gardens. We stretched our legs and explored the local fauna before returning to the hotel to pack for our return voyage. Making our way back to the ship, we observed the day-trippers wearing straw hats from Luau Larry’s and campers with three day beards and overstuffed backpacks and were grateful for the decision to stay in a hotel. The Catalina Flyer pulled out of the harbor and steered us back to our hectic lives. With a deep breath, I promised to return again to our island neighbor whenever I needed to warm my bones or chill my heart. -Erik Hale

That was the last thing I remembered about being unsure because as soon as I left the platform I was flying. Yes, I was tethered to the "line" above my head and helmet securely fastened. This was incredible, I had views. From a perspective that I had never experienced; looking down at the Island from here I had one of those moments where I could not believe I was this close to home. Don't you normally have to be in the rain forest somewhere to try this? Here comes the platform....and were safe. All puffed up with new found courage I turned and yelled "let's go guys....what are you waiting for?” That's when the operator reminded me that this is the first of six courses we will be zipping through today. "That's OK. I'm ready now".

How I got my husband into Spanx hile men around the nation equate their masculinity to the number of calluses on their knobby, over-worked hands, California’s own metro-sexuals have taken a stand and have put the “man” back in manicure. This last decade has brought a sense of acceptance upon the twenty to forty-something male communities that have men driving to spas in droves. The salons and spas of Orange County are strongly catering to our men in the form of gentlemen’s facials, mani-pedis and waxing services. Even Spanx, the wonderful barely-there undergarment that women have been pouring themselves into for years, has officially introduced Spanx for Men (available at Neimen Marcus, $55 and up.) Men in tights have never sounded so appealing. As a thirty-something woman living in Orange County, I spend hours a month investing in my physical appearance: hair appointments, waxing services, makeup, shopping for cute clothes, and working out. Alex, my husband of a year and half, caught my eye seven years ago. He was charming, tanned, and groomed. And I liked this. A lot. It was a relief that I did not have to convince my husband that spa treatments and hair

products were the way to go- he already knew this. Thus, our relationship began. Of course, our marriage is based upon more meaningful content than just outward appearances, but why not look and feel great while enjoying coffee over stimulating conversation? After a harrowing year of cutting back in this tight economy while slaving for pennies, I knew that my hubby deserved a day of rest and relaxation. So, I got on the phone, set some appointments, and a few days later we were off to survey what Orange County had to offer the boys. Alex’s day of pampering began with a haircut at Crew Salon at The Lab in Costa Mesa.

I knew from the beginning of our relationship that Alex and his hair were a package deal. If I were to love one, I must love the other equally. Alex has been going to Crew for years and will not let anyone but Dave, his stylist, touch his hair. He credits Dave for creating his fashion-forward coifs, and thanks Crew for his fashion-policing abilities. As Dave works his magic behind the chair, Alex gets to observe what Orange County’s most fashionable stylists are wearing and I get schooled as a result. In the last seven years,

I have learned that long denim skirts are not okay in the summer, Sauconys are not cool shoes, a man can never own too many pairs of Nikes, and that Alex had Ryan Seacrest’s hair years before he hit the Idol stage, guylights withstanding. Thanks Crew. Our next stop took us a few miles down the street to Paul Mitchell the School’s Skin Academy. In the day and age of pennypinching, there is no need to sacrifice quality hair and skin services. The Skin Academy offers a very reasonably priced menu (about half of the cost of a high-end spa) featuring

face and body waxing, facials and back treatments. Yes, this is a school, and YES, the treatments are superb. After checking in with the front desk at the Skin Academy, Alex was led to a changing area where he was given a soft robe to wear. The back treatment began with a gentle cleansing and exfoliation of Alex’s back followed by a massage with essential oils. The finishing touch was a masque that was applied and remained on his back for twenty minutes. The student had mummy- wrapped my husband in a white sheet and placed a heat lamp at his feet. It’s a good thing that only minimal snores escaped. Had he been lying on his back, however, the building would be shaking with every guttural escapee. After sixty minutes of back treatment bliss, Alex was just getting started. Next on the agenda: Spa Gregorie’s in Newport Beach. Spa Gregorie’s is located in the heart of Newport Beach’s shopping mecca Fashion Island and is known for facials, massages and body treatments, all of which are favored by both men and women alike. Upon entering the spa, the tranquil atmosphere relaxed us immediately. I am lucky to have a husband who, although anxiety-ridden and overly concerned with what others may be thinking,

appeared to be as relaxed in this atmosphere as he would be, say, on a golf course or any other androgynous territory. We were greeted by the front desk staff that promptly had Alex fill out a short consultation form. Short is good. While women love to embellish all of our skin woes onto these note cards for the unsuspecting esthetician or massage therapist, men like to question the necessity of this. As the first sign of Alex showing any contempt to filling out yet another card, I shot him “the look.” He complied. Good boy. I waited in the quiet room of the spa while

Alex changed into his robe and standard spa slippers. He exited the locker room and made a beeline for the largest Lazy Boy in sight. As he sunk into the chair, he picked up a control device. The heavens parted and choirs of angels sang. While my husband had found the ultimate massaging-vibrating-comfy chair, I reveled in the fact that I would not have to hear any whining for a back rub, at least for the evening. After a short period of relaxing, the esthetician performing the services greeted us and led us back to her treatment room. Alex got cozy on the bed while Karren, the esthetician, prepared for his eyebrow arch ($25 and up). Now, I must interject momentarily.

As women see it, waxing is the best thing to happen since credit cards and shopping malls. And, it is necessary. Very, very necessary. And men, guess what? We do it to look better for you. Yes, it is slightly uncomfortable, but

the results are well worth it. While we women go full force with our waxing services, having hair ripped out of all sorts of unspeakable areas, we just ask that you men clean up a little bit around the eyes. We promise that it makes you look younger and fresher. And by younger and fresher, we mean hotter. Alex got through his eyebrow arch like a champ. Karren used a purple hard wax that has calming essential oils to quiet the aftermath of angry hair follicles. Also, she took special care to make sure my husband left with man brows- in other words, that his

The next step was the one hour Classic Facial ($100). Alex’s cheeks were pink from the previous day at the beach where he had “scored some sick waves,” and Karren used extra care while cleansing his skin, even making sure the steamed towels weren’t too hot. After a gentle exfoliation, my unsuspecting husband’s face was prepped for extractions. This was the fun part. My husband was blessed with a beautiful complexion that will always make him look five years younger than he is thanks to genetics and excess oil production. When I look at this soft-as-ababy’s-bottom face, I see a glorious mound of pores that are begging to have the life squeezed out of them. The esthetician concurred. While she squeezed and pressed on his nose, we both gawked in wonder and hardly noticed Alex’s occasional “dude!” and “owww, stop!” I did hold his hand, however, and assure them that this was a necessary sacrifice in the name of beauty. I just happened to be benefitting from it as well. During the facial massage that followed, Karren used a hydrating blend of cranberry and other essential oils that smelled heavenly. My husband was “stoked,” despite the sore redness of his nostrils. Spa Gregorie’s was our last stop before home. Now came the fun part- Spanx. Alex was not pleased when I disclosed that I had this wonderful undergarment waiting for him at home. For all he knew, he would be pulling on a flesh-colored body suit that resembled something he would wear surfing in the winter. Much to his surprise, the Spanx were not like this at all. Spanx for Men are fitted undershirts that come in three styles: short-sleeve, v-neck and tank top. Those geniuses at Spanx just knew that simplicity is the way into my husband’s heart. Alex slipped on the white v-neck and admired the thin, snug material that was actually quite comfortable. Suddenly, the look on his face shifted from “do I have to do this?” to “this isn’t so bad; in fact, this is sick!”

When Alex put on a t-shirt over the Spanx, I saw his official look of approval. The fabric and fit of the Spanx smoothed out those slight bumps that had appeared over the last Bring in this ad and receive

seven years. Since I was ready to show my husband off, I made him take me out to dinner. It was my way of getting a ‘thank you’ for planning his pamper party. As we relaxed in our booth at our favorite restaurant, I smiled at Alex’s glowing face. He was refreshed, bright-eyed and not-so-bushy browed. And boy, did he look good in tights. -Lara Rossmann Pham

lthough fashionably late, summer has arrived. For those lucky enough to share this coast as a permanent resident, second home owner or vacationer, this weather means abandoning comforters and climbing under crisp sheets cooled only by sea breezes. It means opening windows, tying back curtains, collecting sea shells and kicking off shoes. The casualness of this beach lifestyle often betrays the sophisticated tastes of its residents.

We have gathered a few minutes with Angela Marie Tesselaar, one of the most sought after local designers, to give you tips to achieve a Soph Beach home. Will “Soph Chic” replace “Shabby Chic”? Gone are the days of Shabby Chic ruling the Coastline décorcode. I, for one, find nothing chic in being shabby. I have always admired Rachel Ashwell’s effortless approach to creating easy breezy environments. Inspired by the South of France and Italian Riviera, I feel that her sophisticated style relays a more tailored and understated sensibility to what is relevant here in Southern California.

Do I have to spend a fortune to gain sophistication? The less you say, the more you feel which is paramount in any comfortable living environment. The essence of the SOPHISTICATED BEACH ESTHETIC is realized only in the details and what does not have to be said aloud. The vibe is quintessentially restrained and subdued. A modern beach home is a sanctuary, a refuge reflecting what is truly important: the comfort of family and friends. All of your senses are engaged without feeling overwhelmed.

If I started over in my home, where should I start? Make sure that the tone is consistent and quiet. It’s all about TEXTURES! Subtle palate, tone-on-tone, approachable yet tailored. Frequently used materials: linens, lightly antiqued leathers, hand troweled plaster, cashmere, natural woods, honed marble, textured French limestone, oxidized bronze and polished chrome accent; materials that get better with age.

What is the single item you adore right now? Mariage Freres Blanc candles are A MUST! A subtle fragrance is delightful way to create a signature environment and I totally dig the complexity of The Blanc’s white tea buds paired with soft woody notes.

Do things I find at the beach belong in the Soph Beach home? Artifacts pay homage to the sea and create interesting conversation pieces. Mounted objects add depth and sophistication to the décor and or any art collection.

You mentioned the five senses and I think we touched them all except for sound. What do you suggest? I always have pleasant ambient background tunes flowing throughout our home. More important, your house music should relate to everyone from teenagers to the grandparents. I highly recommend the Café Del Mar C.D. collection available at www.cafedelmarmusic.com.

hether it’s been a crazy demanding workweek or a strong martini is just beckoning you at full volume, any gal around can find an excuse to catch up with her girls! No doubt, it’s always the right time have some serious fun via girls night out—true Orange County style. Treat yourself, ladies. You’re worth it! And we’ve found just the place for you to let loose and dish the dirt with your favorite gal pals. Just up pretty PCH, across from the beautiful Crystal Cove Park destination, you’ll find Mastro’s Ocean Club. Girls night out has found a perfect spot in Mastro’s for nestling up in their cozy, nautical-themed lounge, with one sweet little cocktail and a lot of mingling! This place is perched at just the right peak to give any guest a full ocean view (hence the name Ocean Club, right?). The dim mood lighting puts anyone in the automatic mix and mingle mood, while the cushy chairs are just begging you to stay a while. Don’t mind if I do! Oversized coral-crafted lamps line the dark granite bar top and the bartenders show off some mixology magic make this local spot the best in drink, food, fun and atmosphere. This is what’s it’s all about in your County. But let’s face it—treating yourself to a special girls night out in a Titaniclike lounge like this requires that perfect outfit to accompany you. And if you’re heading out to a swanky joint like the Ocean Club, you want to be noticed amidst the crowds. Dashing and daring dresses paired up with killer kicks and awesome accessories are essential in what you throw on for a night out like this. Find color that pops and gets those heads a’turnin’! You want to have just the right outfit that gets those girls of yours saying, “Hey, where’d you get that?” I’ll tell you where you got it: Westerly boutique in Corona Del Mar. Centrally located in this beautiful beach town that most call CDM, Westerly is tucked away in a fresh spot surrounded by several shops, restaurants and bars (not to mention the beachy So-Cal waves are just a stone’s

MagazineLayout6-17-10.indd 86

throw away!). Tassel lanterns drape Westerly’s welcoming storefront, and all around you can spot special pieces that you’ll want to welcome home to your own closet. From drapey bohemian-inspired tops and glitzy glam dresses, to sassy swimwear, this place has got every buzzworthy trend covered. And one of the best parts is the variety they’ve got stocked here—there truly is something for every local lady. And have we mentioned the accessories yet? Well here we go…accessories are full to the brim at this sweet boutique. Local designers and artists fill the jewelry trees, and adorn Westerly with big necklaces, matchless golden earrings, and things you can, bottom line, find nowhere else. Handbags and clutches are all around, bringing bursts of color to every shelf. You’ll not only love the threads in Westerly boutique, but you’ll love the amazing staff. If you’re lucky, you might even run into Westerly’s owner, Lindsey Garland. A San Clemente native, Lindsey started her career in Los Angeles as a stylist, working under big-time name Elyse Walker. Her Pacific Palisades business and fashion experience with Elyse took her straight to the top of stylist experience and Lindsey eventually decided to branch out and capture the fashionista in every girl by opening a boutique of her own back in her Orange County motherland. Together with her freelance artist boyfriend (who created all of the artwork in Westerly, I might add), Lindsey opened up Westerly in July 2008 – naming it after the ‘westerly winds’ that generate swells for surfers to enjoy. You can sure tell this place is ocean-inspired too—from the dream-weaving jellyfish lightly painted on the walls behind the register, to the bare dangling light bulbs that highlight display tables throughout the store, mimicking lanky octopus legs. It really is so much fun to shop here—so much to see and experience in one coastal-lovers’ spot. So on this fabulous girls night out on one breathtaking So-Cal summer night, you’re bound to have a memorable time when you’re dressed to the nines and hittin’ up one of the best OC night spots around. Whether you wind up in Mastro’s main bar, filled with mood-lighting and socializing, or find yourself amidst the cozy fireplace patio outside or even the scenic lighthouse patio overlooking that calm evening sky, you’re sure to be one standout lady up in here, thanks to Westerly!

here are dozens and dozens of remarkable local destinations where you can take that special someone out for a fine evening of fun and entertainment. You can head up and down the local Pacific Coast Highway alone and find amusement on the right and left sides. But tonight we’re heading North County for some homegrown, all-American baseball fun. It’s date night for you two at the world-famous Angel Stadium— meaning time to let loose and play ball! Whether you’re a red-bred Angel fan who just can’t stay away from rooting for your team, or you’re more the type that goes for just the fireworks, nachos, and beer, a night out to an Anaheim Angels game is a perfect summer spot to sit back and relax. That’s right; surround yourself with your Orange County neighbors who enjoy where they live just as much as you do. A short trip from coastal OC, Angel Stadium of Anaheim is the ideal baseball fan venue, seating over 45,000 people and serving up tasty fare at three appetizing full-service restaurants. Everywhere you look, you’ll find tried and true sports fans, friendly fellow So-Cal neighbors, and of course food food food! Oh right, and there’s a pretty darned good team playing for you out on that big green field too. And on this sort of a casual date night evening, it’s really all about having some good ol’-fashioned fun. Good thing you went to The Closet in Costa Mesa for your fan-ready wear! Carrying a larger-than-life selection of stylish choices for both guys and girls, The Closet is a simple, modern, but funky spot right by your favorite eateries and drinkeries, just off of coast-bound Newport Boulevard in Costa Mesa (also with 3 other locations: Fashion Island, Irvine Spectrum, and Huntington Beach’s Main Street). When you walk into The Closet, it’s straight down to business here and all about the clothes! A lot like your date night’s destination venue, there’s not a ton of fancy shmancy décor to distract you from what you’re really there for (which is nice for a change!). The white walls inside of this class-act store are the perfect slated background to the diverse mix of clothes and accessories that the boutique carries. For both the male and female, The Closet has one of the best selections in town of everyday outfits, nightlife threads, denim of all colors and styles, as well jackets, coats, vests, hoodies, and so much more. Being a hybrid store of sorts, The Closet planted its roots in surf and skate, but now gambles in the fashion industry as well. Among the racks

you’ll find major brand favorites like Modern Amusement, Obey, RVCA, Stüssy, Hurley, Vestal, and Volcom. In fact, The Closet was RVCA’s first account, as well as Green Apple Tree’s first account. They’re just crazy about supporting the latest designers like these that are true ‘California Couture’ and thrive on being ultra progressive in the items they carry. That’s right this place is big on strutting the best in modern designer garb—part of their mission statement actually. Isn’t it just the best thing ever when you can find remarkable new labels from up-and-coming designers that you just can’t find anywhere else? The Closet agrees and is a bona fide brand incubator for local and non-local designers to bring their latest onto the scene in the comfort of their own Closetstyle home, and at an accessible price point too. The Closet has been around for years, and affiliates its success to a dedicated team of people who have worked to build partnerships and support the local business of this unique type of storefront. If you haven’t stopped by yet, swing by—you’re in for a real California Couture treat. Hey Ladies: on this particularly playful date night be sure to go the sporty but stylish route. That’s right Miss Sporty-Spice, you’re gonna want to select just the right thing to wear in order to thoroughly impress your guy. Show off a comfy outfit for that 7th inning stretch, not lacking statement and style: a sweet fedora, great sunglasses, standout kicks and a warmer layer for when the sun goes down. Don’t forget a little handbag to hold a few Angels fan items you picked up (and maybe even a fly ball)! And guys for you: come on and put a little effort into that game day wear! Don’t even think about wearing your so-called ‘lucky’ Angels jersey on date night—not until it’s a fully steady relationship, that is—you must dress to impress! The Closet makes it super simple for you, offering the best in California classic wear. Have we mentioned prices yet? Most scenes as hip as this place have sky-high price tags that nearly no one can afford. But you’ve hit the style jackpot right here in your own Orange County backyard. Are you surprised though, really? Well, your date night at the Angels Game in picture perfect Orange County-land is just a few Friday night fireworks away from being a complete dream come true! That’s right, make sure to pick up a Friday nite game ticket during the summer and you’ll get quite the post-game show with legendary stadium fireworks lighting up the sky (and lighting up your eyes for your cute date to see!). This is one beloved local spot, people— dressed up by one of your new favorite ‘closets’ in town, and all ready to shout “Go Angels!”

For both the guys and the girls this season, it’s all about the classic look for back to school—nothing but simple fashions that make a lasting statement. An honorable mention goes to the fact that the accessories make the girl on this coming first day of school, don’t forget! Get creative and mix it up with jewels, watches, and hair accessories. It’ll make those kiddos stand out in a school crowd during the dreaded cafeteria-filled lunchtime hours, and have ‘em landing one cute dance date in weeks flat! Guys- this season keep it going with the ‘playing it cool’ vibe and staying in tune with the latest and greatest in Surfside’s ideal back to school gear.

When it comes time to pick out that brand spankin’ new back to school outfit for the younger ones in the fam, you really can’t go wrong when shopping in a one-of-a-kind funky store like CC Roo (also conveniently located right on 17th in Costa Mesa). There is nothing stale about this pink, orange, and blue-colored boutique. CC Roo boasts the best in

If these kids are hittin’ the books, the slopes, the waves, or even the playground, just make sure you’re having them stop by both Surfside and CC Roo for everything they’re gonna need to survive another September through June. Just watch when your family’s back in the fall, everyone post-PTA meetings will be asking about the sweet back to school wear you’ve scored, and you can casually tell them that you shop like a local and live like one too!

on’t let that name fool you and more importantly, don’t let the logo scare you (besides, no woman is quiet, is she?), The Quiet Woman restaurant is a must-eat and must-see for any OC local. Another CDM gem, hidden behind bougainvillea and vintage brick walls, this inviting dinner spot boasts a ‘welcome home’ ambiance. The Quiet Woman opened its gorgeous doors in 1965 and has been a beloved spot for generations of locals. With that sort of history, this is the ideal eatery to celebrate any occasion, especially an anniversary. You might want to make this your new south county celebration spot for drinks and live entertainment fun! A marvelous anniversary dinner like this demands a dashing and daring outfit to sport! We’ve paired one hidden gem restaurant with another hidden gem boutique for your special night out on the OC town— Solutions Denim is the answer to your anniversary outfit prayers. Walk through the doors of Solutions and you’ll find not only a gorgeous white chandelier in the center of the room, but literally racks and racks of casual, everyday clothes along with beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces that are perfect for dressy nights out. Everything from accessories to shoes to denim of all colors and styles, this is your newest one-stop-shop to fill up that closet of yours (in fact, you might need to find another closet in the house to support your new shopping habits!). For this extra romantic night out you can see that we’ve grabbed a stunning and shining outfit that can effortlessly be dressed up or down—perfect for this anniversary occasion as well as future nights out on the town. Accessories are a must as well, adding that extra sparkle and glitz in this dimly lit dining room. In fact, all of the fashion selections in Solutions Denim will have you adorned in fashion-forward looks and a longing to come back to the store for more.

Owner Susan Cianciulli Bailey opened this specialty Solutions Denim store with a clear vision to find clothes that truly fit any type of body for any type of occasion. The idea to open her own boutique blossomed when she was at a mandatory ‘motivational’ sales conference for her retail job (we’ve all been to those, right?) and the speaker asked the crowd “What motivates you? What gets you out of bed in the morning?” Susan thought over and over how she could answer that question to herself—and she kept coming back to her very own closet! I love it! She was passionate about clothes, accessories and especially DENIM. Thus began Susan’s stylish road to creating Solutions Denim—now with two gorgeous locations: Newport Beach and Los Feliz. Solutions, of course, focuses on that style staple we all love: denim! With a full ‘denim bar’ and ‘denim menu’ you’re sure to find the best of the best in over 200 styles of designer denim and in every price range possible. And what other place in the county has a mission statement declaring, “total honesty – the better you look the better we look”? This darling denim shop fully acknowledges that trying on jeans is a pain from time to time, but they promise a comfy environment where you’ll find gorgeous clothes in every shape and size. Who doesn’t love that kind of a guarantee? What’s also extra special about Solutions spot is the fact that they carry brands that are normally found only in Hollywood’s most elite of boutiques—so, lucky you doesn’t have to travel far to grab these threads! To top it all off, personal shoppers await you at Solutions to find that perfectly pretty and rightfully sassy outfit for vacations, cocktail parties, anniversaries, you name it. They can fit and service anyone from 13-60 years old, from size 2 to 18 ladies sizes, Solutions gives each customer a full head-to-toe fitting and styling. I’m darned denimly impressed, if I do say so myself! You are certainly guaranteed one perfect night out in home sweet Orange County home on your celebratory anniversary occasion. A sassy outfit that says ‘I love you’ and an appetite fully satisfied. Get out there and celebrate, you two! 94

...FIGHT CLUB Continued from page 53

gave every punch everything I had left. Parillo laughed and asked me if I was getting tired, but he kept pushing me. He didn’t treat me like a girl that had come into his gym to write a story, he treated me how I imagined he treated everyone else he works with and it was tiring and ruthless. Aside from the actual punches Parillo was teaching me, he kept talking about the “mentality of fighting.” At first I did not understand what he meant but as the morning progressed it became more than clear to me, a lot of the time boxing is not going to be practical if I am in a street fight or getting attacked. But what can help me is the mind set and the mental state I gain from learning to box. Parillo stresses that, “people kind of cringe at the thought of punching someone in the face,” and that the certain confidence I will gain from knowing I can defend myself will make all the difference in such a moment. Learning not only the techniques, but becoming both confident and willing is as much a skill as the art of fighting itself. By the end of my time in the ring my bangs were sweated to my forehead and my limbs felt filled with lead, but inside I felt I had tapped into a part of myself I didn’t know existed. Physically if I had the strength I would have kept going all day, but I think that will have to wait for another time. I hate to sound cliche, but I felt seriously empowered by this experience. Jason unlaced the white gloves and unwrapped the sweat soaked tape. My hands now felt naked and weightless in the open air, and the right one shook violently with exhaustion. We sat down on a grey leather couch surrounded by Monster energy drink coolers and PlayStation controllers. I tried to conduct some semblance of an interview despite the fact that I was physically exhausted. I had to record the entire thing on my cell phone because my right hand shook so badly I could hardly write. I tried to pretend that was normal, but I am sure he saw right through me. Parillo casually went through a list of accomplished athletes he has trained and while there are far too many for me to list some of the most note worthy include 2 time UFC Champion BJ Penn, who is preparing for his next title opportunity and former UFC Champ Vitor Belfort. In addition to these great fighters, Parillo has worked with Prize fighter Danny Perez, of Long Beach, World Extreme Cagefighting Champion

MagazineLayout6-17-10.indd 96

Jose Aldo, Boxer Paul Spadafora, Boxer Francois Botha, as well as other UFC fighters like Justin McCully and Heath Herring, to name a few. The years Jason has spent coaching have truly paid off. When I asked him what the highlight of his career was he was hard pressed to choose because he has been fortunate to train so many accomplished athletes. But if he had to choose one which stood out it came while training Johnny Tapia, a five time world boxing champion who Parillo traveled with to New York to work in his corner. “I knew I had a career when walking into Madison Square Garden, Johnny Tapia turned to me and said, “now you can say you’ve trained your first world champ.’ I was just a kid at the time, like 27. It gave me the reassurance I needed to make the transition into training these guys.” Jason then glanced over at Vitor who had arrived and was jumping rope with such skill and at such great speed that I couldn’t even see the rope, only the whistle it made while cutting through the thick air of the gym. It was time for Parillo to get back to work with a more serious fighter than myself. In that short hour I learned a lot about myself, more than I had anticipated. It never occurred to me that a person of my frame could use their body in the ways that I did that day. The experience gave me a feeling that I can describe only after the fact, because the calming confidence I now carry myself is something I was never aware that I was missing. These days you can find Parillo at the RVCA gym, in Hilo, Hawaii where he works with Penn, or flying around the world to wherever he may be needed. If you are fortunate enough to have an opportunity like this, do not think twice and take it, this was truly an experience I will never forget. An incredibly humble thanks goes out to Parillo and everyone at RVCA for giving me this opportunity. -Erin Bellaire
