Bundtinis are good for business.

Erik Hale The Hoff (a.k.a Head Lifeguard) The sun sets late, the beaches are packed, the Peninsula has traffic like the 405, we eat on our patios, drink on rooftops, watch movies on the beach, bust out the beach cruisers, put our feet in the sand, read long novels, take in afternoon baseball games, set bonfires, play 6 man, focus on our tans, complain about sunburns, make s’mores, take road trips, BBQ, surf, swim, snorkel, paddle and have FUN. I <3 Summer.

Say thanks with a box of bundtinis — but get enough so they’ll share.

There shall be eternal summer in the grateful heart. ~Celia Thaxter

hef Shachi Mehra wasn’t always a chef. Growing up, she wanted to be a doctor, so she went to school pre-med and took all the required courses from calculus to biology and ended up landing a job working with a successful doctor. Then, one day she looked at her medical mentor in his element and came to the realization that in 25 years, she wasn’t going to be as happy as he is in his field. So, she tried to think of something else to do with her life before it was too late.

C

Her sister suggested attending culinary school, because Shachi had always loved to cook. Shachi considered the idea and quickly contacted a pharmaceutical salesman she’d met at the doctor’s office who was friends with one of New York’s top chefs. She had nothing to lose. Her interview with the chef at Trap Rock lasted 45 minutes and ultimately landed

Shachi her first job as a cook. Shachi held onto her career at the doctor’s office for six months, but said as soon as she walked into that kitchen, she knew that “this is what I was supposed to do.” “Once I followed my real passion, I feel like doors just started opening for me,” Shachi said. “I feel like everything happens for a reason.” Chef Shachi continued on the path that seemed to have been lain for her and quickly honed her own chef skills while trailing winner of BRAVO’s Top Chef Masters 2011 Chef Floyd Cardoz at Tabla. She apprenticed under his leadership, mesmerized by his expertise in preparing Indian-style dishes, for two years. Then, like every great chef should, she traveled … to India, Tokyo and Sydney, and after cooking in London for a couple months, she moved to Newport Beach to open the first US location of Tamarind of London.

On November 14, 2011, Tamarind of London opened its doors here in Crystal Cove at Newport Coast. It bears similarities to its Michelin-honored predecessor in London, and no doubt has filled its tables just based on the brand recognition which already exists, but Tamarind of London in Newport is making its own mark with a coastal twist. “What we’re doing here [at Tamarind of London] is accessing all of India,” Chef Shachi said. “A lot of people haven’t even tried true Indian food. In London the relationship with Indian food is everywhere – they’re like 7-Elevens. Even pubs have Indian curry night. It is very engrained in their culture,” Shachi continues to explain. “A lot of people here are coming in as their first experience eating Indian food. We’re doing very traditional dishes, using traditional spices and flavor profiles, but changing the presentation a little by incorporating what California has to offer, too, making it more approachable.” The space where the States’ first Tamarind has arrived was previously inhabited by Sage on the Coast, but the daring new design relinquishes no resemblance to its prior residents. The completely refurbished restaurant is astonishing, capturing its customers’ attention with a bold red color palette, defined by the piece de resistance: three red custom-cast art pieces, which are also working tandoor ovens. Splashes of more bright red can be seen in the glass-tile kitchen surround and hood while warm wood sculptures and furniture as well as glitzy brass details are artfully placed around the dining room and bar area to balance the striking scheme of red. “To watch something be built, adds to your relationship with the space,” Chef Shachi said. “It was a lot of fun to be a part of every detail from demo to the finished space.”

The integrated idea of bold yet comforting can also be detected with a Tamarind of London dining experience. Make sure to come hungry, because the list of menu items will tempt you to choose more than one. Most of the menu’s “Firsts” average about $10 and will give diners a proper representation of what Tamarind has to offer while allowing adventurous eaters the ability to consume

I WANT TO INTRODUCE PEOPLE TO FLAVORS THAT THEY HAVEN’T BEEN SHOWN IN TERMS OF INDIAN FOOD, AND I REALLY WANT PEOPLE TO BE ANTICIPATING WHAT WE’RE GOING TO DO NEXT.” multiple menu items. Chef Shachi recommends starting with the Steamed PEI Mussels ($11) with coconut milk, fennel and toasted coriander for that extra Indian punch of flavor. An item from the “Breads” category is a must as their version of fresh Naan is made right in front of your eyes. For a couple dollars more, try the Goat Cheese & Scallion Naan with black pepper, and you’ll be requesting seconds. And what good would the exquisite Tandoor ovens be if they weren’t used for firing food. Tamarind prides itself on its offering of Tandoori Kebabs, ranging in price from $20 for classic Tandoori Chicken with black salt to $29 for Australian Lamb Chops elevated by the additions of red chili, malt vinegar and green papaya. Traditional accompaniments like black lentils, basmati rice and smoked eggplant can be added to any order for less than $10. Try Tamarind’s Three Green Saag, a traditional Indian side dish that has been Orange County-fied as this healthier rendition is made with mustard, spinach and kale. From the “Mains” Chef Shachi proudly describes her patrons’ praise for her Spicy Duck Curry with star anise and cinnamon for $21. “The Duck Curry was one of those things that I wasn’t sure would be well received, but it’s one of our highest sellers,” Chef Shachi said. Most of Chef Shachi’s recipes use very traditional flavors and spices due to her upbringing in a Hindi household, but she also allows herself to be naturally inspired by all of the cultures she came across while living and working in New Jersey.

SummaTime 2012

“I grew up eating peanut butter and jelly for lunch and traditional Indian food for dinner,” Chef Shachi admits. You also might not expect a bar scene at a fine-dining Indian establishment, but then it wouldn’t be Newport Beach without the scene. Tamarind hosts an explosive happy hour, serving seasonallydriven cocktails with witty names. Created by Shanty Dutta and General Manager Maneesh Rawat, the cocktail menu offers a very different set of ingredients and flavors than you’ll find in any other bar. Tamarind’s favorite summertime-inspired cocktail Pimms O’clock mixes Pimms No. 1, fresh strawberries, cucumber, oranges and fresh lemonade to embellish on the London classic. Fruit-driven non-alcoholic cocktails are also available for $6. While Chef Shachi already appears confident in her new coastal establishment, she hopes her guests will appreciate her commitment to exposing them to a new approach on authentic Indian cuisine. “I want to continue to showcase Indian food in a way that really hasn’t been done before. I want to introduce people to flavors that they haven’t been shown in terms of Indian food, and I really want people to be anticipating what we’re going to do next,” Chef Shachi said.

ho has “The Right Stuff” to keep Orange County crowds coming through their

doors?

LOCALE’s

editors decided it was time

to

compile

and

compare all of the “New Kids On The Block” for this issue’s VS. With new restaurants popping up all over the county in the past year, it’s easy to miss the gems amongst the treasure trove of tasty new eateries. And, we recommend you not judge a book by its cover. Many of our favorite picks have landed in unassuming locations, trading expensive spaces for high-quality food. We are proud to present our list of nine restaurants we hope will be “Hanging Tough” for years to come.

ASADA

DISH: CARNE ASADA If you are lucky enough to grab a patio seat on a warm Summer afternoon at the new Asada restaurant in Laguna Beach; then, you are “lucky enough.” Positioned perfectly in downtown Laguna Beach, Asada affords the luck-holder of patio seating to lounge comfortably, enjoying the weather and the people watching. We arrived mid-afternoon and the usually-packed patio seating was available to our surprise. We were greeted quickly by a knowledgeable wait staff that recommended an off-menu margarita and delivered salsa both warm in taste and temperature. The warmth of the salsa blended perfectly with the warm tones of wood and paint of this upscale, yet casual space. Scott McIntosh, formerly of Nick’s, has transformed the former home of Javier’s into what feels like the inside of a posh luxury yacht. The interior of the restaurant pairs wonderfully with the rich, well thought out menu. We were served roasted jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese, wrapped in bacon and served with a jalapeno jelly dipping sauce as well as their signature Carne Asada – a pile of USDA prime beef, marinated in agave and prepared with roasted scallions. The food was wonderful, the service was spectacular, and the attention to detail was unlike that at any other restaurant we visited on this journey. Congratulations Scott, you and your family have a winner on your hands.

Proof that healthy recipes can be scrumptious and slimming, 17th Street’s newest shop Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop has already drawn a host of followers. The bright yet rustic establishment is “keeping it earthy” with refinished fixtures and furniture and pops of brilliant color on the floor from vintage, personalized produce ads. The outdoor space is lined with seating, boxed herbs and veggies, and the restaurant is attached to Greenleaf’s marketplace where you can purchase produce and groceries form local vendors as well as protein shakes and juice blends (try the Fat Burning Lemonade – perfect for a hot summer day) for that quick healthy fix. Executive Chef Kristi Ritchey’s powerful story of fighting obesity on the Greenleaf “diet,” enabled her to lose 110 pounds. Her own life-change positions Chef Kristi as the perfect person to deliver flavorful, fun and healthy food. Greenleaf’s Harvest-to-Home concept hopes to develop a community of neighborhood customers as they have at their Beverly Hills and Century City locations. Encouraging that community feel is a large communal table, covering nearly half of the interior dining space – the ideal place to enjoy our favorite signature or build-your-own salad. We were served the Antioxidant Orchard, a tasty conglomeration of fruits, veggies, nuts, herbs and mixed greens with a pomegranate whole grain mustard vinaigrette for $10.95. This Greenleaf favorite is even more mouthwatering with the addition of their pan roasted salmon, but can make it a little pricey. Every salad has a recommended wine pairing and is served in stylish bright, white dishes. Greenleaf’s Thin-Crust “Pizza’s” (they are actually made with whole wheat tortillas!) are only 500 calories and come in several flavors. And don’t leave without a side of Baked Sweet Potato Fries with Avocado Pesto – avocado and sweet potatoes?! A heavenly new pairing that I now crave. Whether this new eatery becomes your weightloss solution or the next great place to meet your neighbors, we’re sure you’ll love the eco-friendly experience.

IL DOLCE DISH: ORECCHIETTE WITH RAPINI & SAUSAGE

Wife behind the counter and Husband at the stove. The smell of charred almond wood warming the pizza oven to over 800 degrees permeates the air. You might feel like you are walking into a cafe in Sicily instead of a renovated strip mall across from Triangle Square, and might expect typical Americanized Italian fare strictly based on the location, but your expectations are wrong. Roberto, the Argentine owner and chef of IL Dolce has developed a quiet reputation among locals as a purveyor of fresh, homemade Italian food. He imports Antimo Caputo Flour from Italy, serves Italian Angelo Poretti beer and makes his own mozzarella in the kitchen from a mix of milk, salt, water, cheese and curd. We were fed like we were sitting at a farm table after clearing a field, starting with a bright beet salad, one of their famous prosciutto e rucola pizzas, and we finished with the sweet, spicy and creamy deliciousness that is his version of Orecchiette with rapini and sausage. The pasta was served in a heaping portion, producing mountains of steam in an immense, white family-style bowl that was perfect for sharing. Our team of four clanked spoons on several occasions as we fought over the sausage and sauce. Il Dolce is a perfect family restaurant in the dining room and the kitchen.

SEA LEGS

DISH: SQUID INK RISOTTO WITH BABY OCTOPUS AND PIQUILLO

DISH: SAUSAGE SLIDERS

“We’re kind of like the bullies on the playground. We force you to do food our way,” said Owner Jason Quinn. Quinn’s stubborn attitude is well-received to those who know his food. As the winner of the Food Network’s Great Food Truck Race in 2011, Quinn’s Lime Truck specialties certainly seemed destined for bigger and better things; and, with the 2012 opening of Playground, Quinn set out to surprise adventurous palates with his contagious passion for playful food. The Playground’s menu is printed daily just minutes before the doors open, consisting of the freshest, hand-picked proteins and produce. In fact, menu item availability is based on quantities which can be picked up by the Chef that day. The Playground has a freezer, but it is smaller than most residential freezers, meaning everything Quinn serves you is farm-to-table fresh. So, onto the Playground’s in-your-face food … We couldn’t resist that day’s “Attempt for the Perfect Food Porn” for $13, so we started with that. A bold take on a classic Croque Madame, this dish definitely qualified as erotic eats. It was melt-in-your-mouth delicious and oh-so sinful. CUCINA ENOTECA

DISH: SHORT RIB PAPPARDELLE Unable to focus on my paper menu, I can’t take my eyes off this compound of a space. Taking after its San Diego predecessor, Cucina Enoteca in the Irvine Spectrum has a homey, hippy rusticity about it that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. Surprised by the juxtaposition of the bright neon orange chairs and flowered tablecloths just beneath the antler chandeliers, I thought I must be dreaming. There are so many facets and features hidden like little treasures for diners to discover, and when I found out that all of the fixtures and even the furniture were designed and produced in San Diego to sell (in addition to the retail shop which houses an impressive collection of culinary accessories, apothecary and wine), I nearly forgot about eating all together so I could start shopping. A collage of old wooden shoes covers one wall while flea market finds are making my eyes meander in every direction. Cucina Enoteca is a vibrant new eatery that feels alive and comfortable and elemental. The ambiance drums up memories of dinners at the family farmhouse and so does the food! Executive Chef Joe Magnanelli plays to an Italian palate with simple and intentional eccentricities. The menu begins with a section titled Vasi (or vessels in Italian) and each is served in a mini mason jar with Tuscan toast. We skipped to the Antipasti section and munched on one of my favorites – stuffed fried squash blossoms ($9.75). Cucina Enoteca serves their version with purple basil pesto. The server assured us that we couldn’t leave without tasting the customer-favorite Pizza Bianco ($14), which was deliciously crispy and cheesy; but, our favorite dish was the Short Rib Pappardelle ($19.50), a classic home-style stew-like pasta feast. The pappardelle was fresh and perfectly aldente while the 24-hourbraised short ribs and cremini mushrooms put us over the top. But wait – there’s more. We had to sample the Zeppole ($7), Italian-style donut holes with vanilla crema, dulce de leche and sugared cinnamon. I am telling you, these donuts are even more delish than those I’ve tasted in Italy. Don’t forget to check out their artisan cocktail list and weekly wine tastings of their more than 150 labels!

Tired of fighting off the Main Street scene in Huntington Beach? Located in an underrenovation strip mall on Beach, Sea Legs Wine Bar is that comfortable, loungy locale that we 30 and 40-somethings have been longing for after too many years of fiestas at Fred’s. This beach chic eatery is beautifully adorned with wine-barrel and shell art, tufted chairs, linen banquets, glass chandeliers, personal photography vignettes and an all around cottagey elegance. A nautical theme converts the charming space into a Hampton-esque hideaway for wine connoisseurs with a stunning floor-to-ceiling glass wine cabinet replete with a library ladder behind the quartz bar. Co-owner and self-proclaimed “wine snob” Jennifer Duboudieu said she “can’t wait to fill her wine cabinet and have a place to make memories without leaving home,” which was the derivation for the Sea Legs concept. Sea Legs also sells wine-related gifts like custom picnic baskets for a day at the beach or on the boat, olive oils, chocolates and caramels and decorative serving trays. The simple tapas menu at Sea Legs is divided into two sections: Whites and Reds, making it easy to select the right type of wine with any of their delectable California-style dishes. We munched on a refreshing Roasted Beet Salad ($8), Bruschetta ($6), and their house-made Sausage Sliders ($8). Their take on the slider blended pork sausage with fennel, paprika and micro basil topped with a spicy tomato sauce and melted provolone cheese. If you’re not in the mood to pair that substantial small plate with wine, try one of their ten craft beers on tap. Sea Legs is an excellent place to gather with friends or take a date. And as this newbie announces upon entry: “If you are lucky enough to drink wine by the sea … you are lucky enough.”

STARFISH DISH: CRISPY SPRING ROLLS

IRON PRESS DISH: FRIED CHICKEN WAFFLE SANDWICH AND TATER TOTS WITH HANGAR 24 ORANGE WHEAT BEER

An innovative eatery consisting entirely of bar seating, The Iron Press at Costa Mesa’s OC Mart Mix is making waffles for an audience. With its interactive seating, customers can view the ironing of waffles right in front of their eyes. Already accustomed to the industry, Founder Leonard Chan who also co-owns California Shabu Shabu, Shuck Oyster Bar and Arc Restaurant, was influenced by waffeliers in San Francisco and Seattle to create a communal waffle house in his neighborhood. The simplicity of this establishment seems almost futuristic. Orders are punched in via individual IPods. Glimpses of recycled everything from gaslines for foot stools, signs, the concrete bar and glass pendants hover throughout, and two rotating art walls bring pops of color to this otherwise industrial space. Intrigued by the forward-thinking concepts, I waited for my waffle and beer pairing and turned my curiously placed silverware (they set up the silverware horizontally?) in its regular, vertical position. Chan’s recommended duo matched one of their 30 draft beers Hangar 24 Orange Wheat with a spicy take on chicken and waffles. The hand-sliced fried buttermilk chicken breast was accompanied by jalapeno maple syrup and coleslaw, and let me warn you: if you like spicy, their accompaniments are even spicier! We also tasted the Tater Tots with a side of Sriracha Ketchup – another fiery food pairing. The Iron Press also promotes education and advocates student involvement in creating their menus by working with Orange Coast College to create new sandwiches once a month. Now that’s a course I would have signed up for: How to Pair Beer with Waffles by The Iron Press. Check it out.

Nancy Wilhelm is a master. She has transformed the former three decade home of an “Asian inspired” restaurant into an inspired Asian restaurant. She began with what she believed was a relatively simple concept. She asked Chef Jarvis Yuan to create a menu that takes advantage of coastal cuisine throughout Asia. She wanted a menu that mixed the elements of food from places like Korea, India, China, Vietnam and Thailand. It turned out to be a much larger chore than she anticipated. Even though the foods of these regions are similar, they are also tremendously unique in their flavors and preparations. We visited Starfish on a very full stomach. They were the last stop on our ninerestaurant tour, and we loved – not to mention devoured – everything they put in front of us. If I blindfolded you on the drive to this restaurant, you might be able to tell you were near the ocean (as it is situated just across the street from the Montage and Treasure Island beach). If I took off the blindfold when you entered you would never guess that the aqua leather benches, tasteful art and dark wood finishes reside in a shopping center. We were greeted with a Lagniappe Margarita (Espolon Silver Tequila, muddled kumquat, fresh mint and lime, agave syrup and soda), then with Saigon Rolls and finally with Wagyu Banh Mi sliders. Nancy stepped away from her restaurant for over an hour and sat with us like friends. She shared her successes and failures creating this restaurant. It was one of the most pleasurable stops on our journey.

SLAPFISH DISH: SLAPFISH AND CHIPS

Andrew greeted us with an electric smile that seemed to charge his sense of humor. If the interior of this restaurant reminds you of their food truck in regards to the minimalism, it is partly a coincidence and decidedly due to an intense focus on the food above all else. Coowners Andrew Gruelle and Jethro Naude had a plan and it started with a truck. When they joined the immensely popular food truck market it was simply part of the business plan. They figured the best way they could attract clients to a brick and mortar restaurant was to make food that attracted clients that were willing to follow you around. It didn’t hurt that for six months their former food truck business acted as a rolling billboard for their soon-to-belaunched restaurant. The restaurant, furnishings and platings are utilitarian. The fish and flavors are, in contrast, anything but practical. The menu contains the clever naming you would expect from former food truck operators, with names like “Slap me fresh, plate” and “Because we had to, fish tacos.” Their focus on social media has also added creative touches to the menu with one item dedicated to an online contest to create a dish. The winner receives an item on their chalkboard menu and unlimited orders of that item during their 90-day reign. The key to the restaurant is the fish. The owners are also partners in a fish distribution company. They are able to take advantage of the absolute best cuts of fish at wholesale pricing. Their goal is to bring fresh, sustainable seafood to the masses at affordable pricing. They nailed it.

A Farmers’ Market Manual for Orange County

Market

grew up on canned vegetables and preserved fruits in the wintertime – unless we were lucky enough to have a bag of cut-from-the-cob frozen corn left over from the previous summer. Sure, we had our summertime gardens bright and bountiful with cucumbers, carrots, squash, tomatoes and sweet peas which my brother and I would sneak as we ran barefoot through the sprinklers; but once the first frost settled in, the joy of having fresh veggies disappeared. But here in Orange County, we don’t have to wait out the weather, because local farms

can plant and harvest fresh crops throughout the entire year! With the explosion of our appetite for farmto-table fresh goods, now is the time to get out there and discover and support our local purveyors. LOCALE foraged through our neighborhood farmers markets to find what we think are the highlights of this land of milk and honey. Don’t forget to bring cash when you head out on your own harvest hunt – most of the market vendors don’t take credit cards, but not to worry - $25 should fill your bag. Enjoy exploring the mosaic of markets scattered across our sunshine-abundant county.

Tuesdays

Use LOCALE’s comprehensive Orange County Market Manual to find a location near you on a day when you’re free to shop the farms!

Orange County Fair & Events Center Farmers Market

Corona Del Mar Farmers Market

8 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa | Hours: 9 am – 1 pm

PCH & Marguerite Avenue (behind Bandera), Corona Del Mar | Hours: 9 am – 1 pm

Proclaimed to be the oldest farmers market in Orange County by one day (opened just before the Fullerton Farmers Market), the Fairgrounds Farmers Market is celebrating its 30th year. One of my favorites due to the variety of vendors and the fact that it’s also a food truck destination during market time, the fairground farms exhibit exotic eats like Mycality Mushrooms out of Arcata, California, which sells shiitake, oyster, maitake, king oyster and lion’s mane mushrooms by the bag. The market has also more recently added an organic beef producer and a salad-sandwich steward, but I can’t hit these stands without stopping by to chat with “the Hummus Guy” at Baba Foods out of Chula Vista for a mid-day dip, exploring today’s catch at Dry Dock Fish out of Fullerton or sampling unique Japanese and Chinese veggies from one of my favorite merchants. Live music sets the pace for my stroll here. There is so much to choose from that you can certainly skip the grocery store. La Bahn Ranch even sells milk and whole chickens!

FARM FRESH GUIDE Favorite stand:

The Bread Gallery, owned by husbandand-wife team Dawn and Gunther, offers authentic German baked goods, including pretzels, rolls, fat-free Bavarian baguettes and vegan sweets. All of their products are handbaked daily and they’re healthy!

FARMERS MARKET vs. SUPERMARKET MUST-HAVE: Farmfresh, hormone-free large brown eggs from La Bahn Ranch of Temecula. You will never go back to grocery store eggs after tasting these rich cartons of colorful eggs.

market-to-meal idea:

Pick up some seasonal squash blossoms, stuff them with ricotta cheese and roll them in flour and a beaten egg for the perfect fritto misto-style summer appetizer.

Between the boutiques of this nautical neighborhood and just behind Bandera is the lively bustling beach-side Corona Del Mar Farmers Market. Started in May of 1996 by Rick Heil, also the operator of the San Clemente Sunday farmers market, the Corona Del Mar market carries a true sense of community between the friendly vendors. Heil says a market’s “gotta’ have good growers, and many of these vendors are the core that have been with me since day one. There is a true camaraderie between the farmers here.” The stands run in a line facing other vendors with a small pathway for patrons. You can feel the family element surrounding the market. I am greeted with a smile from the French Baskateer but become distracted by the crowd gathering around the boxes of cherries at the Verni Farms stand from Clovis, California. Representing Verni Farms on behalf of his great grandfather, Adam Halaby encourages me to taste the cherries for myself. I end up leaving with a bag, which I eat in its entirety on the way to the next market because they’re so sweet. Verni Farms also make their own olive oil and harvests unpasteurized almonds. Moving through the aisle, I’m intrigued by Basil Tops, a natural pesto maker selling several flavors in handy bags, and am suddenly enthralled by the luxurious aroma of Clean Living Soaps from Santa Monica. Fascinating flower varieties and orchids can be found at the end of this market while a slew of asparagus varieties including purple, jumbo and extra thin are on display at the Zuckerman’s Farm stand. The quality of the Corona Del Mar Farmers Market will have me coming back regularly to bask in the glory of these gifted farmers.

FARM FRESH GUIDE Favorite stand:

Neff Ranch Premium Fruits & Fresh Squeezed Juices. I am already a fan of freshly-squeezed OJ, but have you ever tried freshly-squeezed apple juice without the addition of sugar? I promise you’ll be a convert.

FARMERS MARKET vs. SUPERMARKET MUSTHAVE: Mangi Con Amore, my favorite fresh pasta stand that used to reside regularly at the OC Fairgrounds market. Try the Traditional Trofie pasta with their Pesto Genovese sauce.

The Crow Bar and Kitchen: 2325 E. Coast Hwy | Corona Del Mar, CA 92625 | (949) 675-0070

eated on the patio at Gulf Stream, he perplexedly peered across the street at the empty establishment, and while he sipped his wine, he wondered why the building remained uninhabited despite the cawing crows perched on the roof’s edge. He had made this neighborhood his home, but it was missing something – a place to gather without pretention, a place to appreciate unfussy food and fun service. He wanted to set forth a culture reminiscent of a childhood dining experience he’d had while traveling through Austria. This restaurant was in a house and consisted of two tables; the entire family serving terrines of comforting soup, and the 8-year-old Steve Geary could see the joy in the owners’ faces as they watched him spooning ladles of soup into his satisfied mouth. That’s why Geary opened The Crow Bar and Kitchen. He wanted to see the pleasure in his guests’ faces as he hosted them in his own restaurant. Combining kitschy crow art with the comfort of eating in a kitchen, Geary had created a concept that he knew his neighbors would flock to. And Geary has more ventures up his sleeve with the upcoming launch of three other concepts under the Eat Crow umbrella, including another larger-scale Crow Bar and Kitchen and locations which will be “running the gamet of culinary cuisines.”

Crow Burger Kitchen: 3107 Newport Boulevard | Newport Beach, CA 92663 | (949) 673-brgr Visit www.crowbarcdm.com and www. crowburgerkitchen.com for daily and seasonal specials at each location.

You’ve been a Corona Del Mar resident for more than a decade – where are you originally from and what made you chose Corona Del Mar as your place to land? “When I was growing up, my Dad was in the service, so we lived abroad. I was lucky. I got to live in Germany when I was a kid and traveled to Italy a lot, which exposed me to a lot of things that I’ve come to value. I was also the youngest of four boys, so I always got stuck in the kitchen, but now I value it. The pleasure in the process of cooking with my Mom contributed to my background in the restaurant industry. I like to see, serve and be that part of the hospitality chain. That’s where the nexus and creation of my restaurants came from.”

How did you make the move from commercial realtor to restaurateur? “It was serendipitous. I would be eating at Gulf Stream and saw that this space was always empty. It was just the right time to make the career move.”

Explain how the Crow Bar concept came to life?

Let Them

“I originally wanted to do a more wine-centered restaurant like the enotecas in Italy, but the more research I started to do, the more I discovered the craft beer market was really the exploding market at the time (although our wine list is still exactly the same as what I would have chose for a wine bar). I liked the gastropub idea – fine dining elements, service and food with the casualness of a pub. There was nothing like that around the OC when we opened the day after Thanksgiving in 2007. People caught on quickly.”

I’m curious. What does the crow branding signify? “We were trying to think of an animal-centric name like the Eagle in England, because most of the pubs were named after barn yard animals. The Crow is one of the smartest birds, and I don’t think people realized how many crows are actually living around here.”

The idea of the Gastropub seems to be popping up in every city. How do you intend to keep the Crow Bar establishments interesting to eager eaters? “Ever since we began, the idea was seasonality. You can come here three, four, five, six times a month and have a completely different experience in having a burger and a beer. This can be anything you want it to be.”

What’s your favorite dish on the menu? I love the chicken paillard – a whole chicken cut in half, which right now is served blackened and spicy. But my favorite is the Black Label Burger. It’s like eating a steak

in hamburger form. It’s made from a 21-day dry-aged ribeye. We’re crazy enough to put it in a grinder and make a burger out of it. If you were served that at a steakhouse, it would cost $45. It’s meaty and rich with caramelized bone marrow butter. It’s epic – it’s better than a steak, and it’s only $19.

The locals love you, but I see you’ve had some high praise from visiting celebrity chefs like Mario Batali. “We get a lot of chefs from the area that come here. They love to gravitate to us, because they appreciate what we’re doing. When Mario came it validated what we’re doing, but we love our locals.”

Why is community stewardship so important to the Crow Bar and to the success of other OC establishments? “You can’t just take from the community, we have to give back. I like to give back to the locals like the churches and schools and consistently donate dinners. I don’t know why more people don’t do it. It seems so logical and nonsensical to be a part of something.”

Tell me more about your philanthropic involvement and how the Crow Bar and Kitchen have lent themselves to these causes. “We try to participate in four or five events a year where we donate time and food to causes like Share Our Strenth, Slow Food USA and Meals and Wheels. We’re doing a food drive this Thanksgiving at one of the local kitchens.”

Who dines at the Crow Bar and Kitchen? “The demographic ranges from young kids with families to 20-somethings on doubledates to octogenarians. I’ve had more people come in and tell me ‘this place reminds me of the place I grew up eating in at . . .’ We don’t target anyone in particular. Everyone is welcome.”

I notice quirky quotes throughout your restaurant like “Eat here or we both may starve” or “You can’t be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline – it helps if you have some kind of football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.” Does that reflect the kind of sense of humor you hope your diners will appreciate about this neighborhood pub? “I peruse websites to find funny quotes about food and alcohol. It’s quite the dichotomy – I want people to take what we’re doing seriously, but I want them to have as much fun with it as I am.”

hose endless days of saltwater and sun, moonlit nights filled with romantic potential, cherished childhood memories of catching fireflies, and the smell of fresh cut grass after a summer rain may be images your mind reflects upon when dreaming of summer. Locale Magazine wants to make this summer a memorable one, too, so we've compiled seven of our Editor's picks for our favorite summertime locations, serving the most unique, hand-crafted margaritas guaranteed to make your mouth water! Locale Magazine and Tres Sietes Tequila have proclaimed the MARGARITA as the ultimate 2012 summer cocktail, and we've done our homework. First up is “Tequila 101”. Our exclusive ROAD TRIP along the coastline through South County includes a few unexpected surprises and promises to give you...MARGARITA MADNESS!! So raise your salt (or sugar) rimmed margarita and say "Ole" to Summer 2012, may the possibilities be endless!

TEQUILA 101

At Locale Magazine our tequila of choice is Tres Sietes. Its diversity and unparalleled purity places this spirit on a level of its own. Here is your exclusive guide to three of Tres Sietes’ premium tequilas:

Tres Sietes SILVER

PALATE: rich vanilla, cherry and honey, creamy texture PAIRS well with: grilled steak, BBQ chicken and chocolate desserts TASTE: adrenaline inducing, sweet brown sugar and mouthwatering agave

Tres Sietes REPOSADO

PALATE: vanilla, mango, white pepper, cinnamon PAIRS well with: bacon-wrapped scallops, spicy or sweet dishes TASTE: perfectly sun-ripened pears, banana and taffy

Tres Sietes ANEJO

PALATE: cucumbers, hints of tobacco, bread dough and peppered peaches PAIRS well with: ceviche and chilled shellfish TASTE: Resplendent with cherry and butterscotch; a signature triumph Each establishment Locale visited on our margarita madness tour was required to create a signature margarita using a Tres Sietes tequila of their choice. Enjoy our guide and discover the amazing summer cocktails created just for our readers...

EL CHOLO

Irvine? Really? We told you Locale had a few unexpected surprises! Trust us when we say this third generation, familyrun venue is just as impressive as the original “El Cholo” built in 1923 in Los Angeles. Frequented by “Old Hollywood” glamour, the starlets and movie royalty would flock to this authentic Mexican establishment, and not just for the food, mind you, for the Margaritas!! Now here’s an interesting little tidbit about the origin of the margarita: according to “The Great Margarita Book,” in 1934 a beautiful showgirl named Rita DeLaRosa was allergic to alcohol with the exception of tequila. A smitten bartender improvised a cocktail for her and the “Daisy” (Spanish translation: Margarita) was born! But here’s the contradiction, El Cholo opened in 1923, 11 years prior to the story in question. Could it be that El Cholo was the original margarita maker? Hmmm...guess you’ll have to judge for yourself. El Cholo-Irvine wowed us with a spin on the original. We loved the Tres Cholo (muddled fresh cucumber & jicama, Countreau splash, Tres Sietes Anejo, house sweet and sour, fresh lime juice).Tart, fresh with a ‘pop’ of jicama. A faceslap of flava! Locale Lowdown: The “Skinny” margarita will save you a whopping 500 calories as opposed to the traditional Margarita which comes in at 650 calories! SUNSETS BAR

This little jewel of a joint sits directly across the highway from Doheny State Beach. Outdoor seating is ideal for sipping Tres Sietes featured margaritas and watching the sizzling summer sun slide into the Pacific. After dark, things heat up at the House of Aloha with live entertainment, pool tables, darts and tons of special events. (Their event calendar is updated on their website.) If Aloha had a face it would be General Manager Ava Watkins. Her kilowatt smile and genuine hospitality make it impossible to resist one of her signature maggie's: Pineapple Cilantro (Tres Sietes Reposado, agave nectar, fresh pineapple, muddled cilantro, lime, splash of sweet and sour). Or spice thing’s up with their Cucumber Jalapeno (Tres Sietes Silver, agave nectar, fresh cucumber, jalapeno, lime, sweet and sour). NOT your mother's margarita!!

MI CASA

(Rancho Santa Margarita) Even if Rancho Santa Margarita seems like the other side of the planet, please make the trek and visit this brand new Mi Casa location. This is the brainchild of Nathalie and Ryan Moore, third-generation family members of the original classic Mi Casa on 17th St. in Costa Mesa. They’re also newlyweds. Brave, aren’t they? Though it’s located in a strip mall, this beautiful, uniquely hip restaurant had not yet celebrated their Grand Opening when we were invited for a visit. In an unusually organized fashion they have it together here, no obvious kinks to work out like most new establishments. The decor is contemporary and warm. The bar is really cool with brick walls, brown leather booths and an engaging staff, to boot. The centerpiece and focal point of the bar is a huge, crazy, cartoony looking burro piece of art. It was made exclusively for this new location by Todd Marinovich, the smokin’ hot trailblazer artist in the OC. Nathalie designed and selected everything from soup to nuts (pretty impressive for her first venture). But her biggest attribute is her unbridled enthusiasm which we experienced first-hand. She created a masterpiece just for us. May we introduce you to the (drum roll, please) Tres Fresas Strawberry Cucumber Margarita (a.k.a. “Summer in a Glass”) (Tres Sietes Reposado, fresh muddled cucumber, summer strawberries, fresh lime, 100% agave nectar, basil garnish). This cocktail tastes like the feeling of a relaxing summer breeze. COYOTE GRILL

Located just south of downtown Laguna, tucked between Table Rock and Thousand Steps Beaches, the unmistakable Coyote Grill comes into view. Painted bright peach & turquoise, Coyote Grill is easily recognized for its unique appearance and Baja-style cuisine. A local hangout for 23 years, Coyote Grill has also been featured on the Food Network by Rachel Ray. When Kim “Coyote” Bryant originally opened “their home along the sea,” it was intended to be a family affair. Daughter Desiree is currently General Manager and with the help of numerous siblings, has maintained her father’s vision. Confident that Coyote Grill would be left in capable hands, he since has moved to the Big Island of Hawaii where he grows Kona coffee. Of course, Coyote Grill grinds and serves his beans, brewed daily. Boys Night Out is Coyote’s featured rita with fire-roasted Serrano peppers add just the right amount of heat and kick (1 tsp. serranos, Tres Sietes Reposado, agave, lime juice); the Girls Night Out (fresh strawberries, muddled cucumber, agave nectar, Tres Sietes Silver & lime juice) is just as fierce and a perfect beginning to a wild, summer night. CITRUS CITY GRILLE

If it’s been awhile since you’ve been to Downtown Orange then plan a day trip. Don’t say we didn’t warn you about that wacky traffic circle that conjoins Glassell St. north and south and Chapman Ave. The uber chic “Citrus City Grille” is on N. Glassell, so keep your eyes glued to the street signs or a serious case of the ‘spins’ could ensue. Old Town Orange is an eclectic mix of antique stores, organic Berkely-esque eateries and college bars (Chapman College). But this establishment is a dichotomy of contemporary sophistication. When Locale Magazine recently paid them a visit, we were not disappointed. They created three (Tres!) delightful summer concoctions for us to try. But we must warn you, we couldn’t decide on just one so you may have to try all three! Sit outside, set your watch to SUMMATIME and experience the Cozmolita Margarita (Tres Sietes Silver, cranberry juice, splash of fresh squeezed lime with a sugar rim), or the California Sour Margarita (Tres Sietes Anejo, fresh orange, lemon & lime juices, splash of Coke with salted rim), or the refreshing Tres Citrus Margarita (Tres Sietes Silver, fresh squeezed orange, lime & lemon juices, pure agave served with salted rim, shaken pour over ice). All three were created exclusively for Locale Magazine and our esteemed readers by Chris, Citrus City Grille’s manager and mixologist. Sip responsibly and enjoy-you’ve just had your week’s worth of vitamin C! Locale Lowdown: Are you a fan of Coachella? That’s probably the reason manager Chris Ingerson looks familiar-he’s the dude responsible for the entire setup and teardown of this famous Inland festival! EL MATADOR

You’ve passed it a million times. It’s been in the same location on Newport Boulevard since 1966, a small, traditional Mexican food place. Nothing flashy. It sounds cliché, but better words were never spoken when it comes to this eatery, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Until you’ve actually gone inside, you don’t know what you’re missing! This is the real deal. A timeless mélange of mariachi goodness infused with eye-popping painted walls. Think Tijuana meets Betty Crocker. But here’s the deal: it totally works! The staff is mucho friendly, the food is home-style authentic Mexican, and the charming bartender Alex mixes a smooth “Skinny” Margarita (fresh squeezed lime juice, Tres Sietes Silver, splash soda water, agave nectar). His inspiration for a lower calorie alternative (150 calories) came from his Mama. It’s simple, light and fresh, like a clean resplendent lemonade. But here’s the REAL skinny...you won’t feel guilty tomorrow when you put on that neon string bikini!

he celebrating never stops—June means graduation month for those student types, and you better be ready for some party time with friends and fam! We know that you’ll be lookin’ out for the best graduation celebration spots to hang that robe and tassel. That’s why we’ve picked STARFISH Asian Coastal Cuisine in Laguna Beach as the perfect coastal getaway to make a graduation toast. Just across from the famous Montage Resort and steps from one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire world, STARFISH is a true blue gem. In fact, their oceanminded turquoise booths and cool, dark decor is the perfect Asian Coast backdrop for a So Cal event like this. Owners Larry Montgomery, Mark Hanna and Managing Partner Nancy Wilhelm keep STARFISH at the front of the locals’ minds with this nearly year-old culinary concept (check their website to celebrate their 1-year-anniversary party!). The menu features “AmerAsian” cuisine, highlighting tastes from Thailand, Vietnam, China, Korea, and India. Order any of these “AmerAsian” menu items, and you’ll be dining on exotic ingredients like ginger, lemongrass, Thai basil, jasmine, and curries. The summer rolls, ahi poke, garlic noodles, and even the ribs are all favorites—flavors that will surely make you wanna explore the menu of this coastal cuisine. Cozy up to the happenin’ horseshoe-shaped bar, and order up a fancy sake, a Buddha’s Kiss, whiskey blossom or any passion fruit cocktail. Wilhelm says, “I knew a great bar was a must!”—And she did it right. Colorful sangrias, boutique wines, and a list of beers on tap are perfect for raising your glass to that special grad. Not only is the food and drink at STARFISH superb, the service and fun modern atmosphere are the cherry on top! Servers are ready to give newcomers their best recommendations (although it’s hard to choose with all of this great grub).

STARFISH, like all good restaurants in my opinion, has specials every night of your 7-day week: happy hour every night from 3-6pm, and a late night menu on Fridays and Saturdays—this is definitely the place to be in Laguna for not only a memorable graduation dinner, but a midnight snack or after-party locale.

Bella Bleu on Orange County’s own magnificent mile that is 17th Street in Costa Mesa is dressing every grad this year. No wonder “live. love. shop.” happens to be the boutique’s coined mantra! Walk into Bella Bleu, and it may look like any other sweet boutique in the neighborhood…which might be true until you take a look at the prices on BB’s awesomely cute skinny jeans, flowy tops, and colorful accessories! Bella Bleu breaks the rules and offers cute threads at unbeatable prices. You can surely spend your graduation money easily in this place, and practically get yourself an entire new wardrobe with how far that hard-earned dollar goes. This summer, Bella Bleu is carrying great printed florals, color-popping denim, cool summer tanks, on-thetown clutch purses, and my personal favorite: shoes! Since Bella’s opening in 2007, it’s brought in fashionistas of all ages and all styles, selling everything from basic jeans and tees to printed blouses and statement accessories that fashion risk-takers will surely sport. Graduation party dresses and summery beachwear are what line the racks and shelves here—I don’t think I’ve ever been to Bella Bleu when it’s not buzzing with customers and the dressing rooms aren’t filled with try-ons and girls telling each other “that’s cute!” Bella Bleu’s large boutique space on 17th Street is the kind of spot where you can just drop in for fun when you’re not looking for anything in particular, and walk out with two shopping bags full of goods. It’s just that tempting, in price and in style, so watch out. You have been warned!

ey ladies! There’s nothin’ like sipping on a cool glass of Chardonnay to freshen up your day, and The Winery Restaurant in Tustin’s The District shopping center is where the good drinks get poured. Here, they call it “crush hour”—a new take on the traditional happy hour (mostly because it’s better, we don’t kid!). Crush hours at The Winery are Monday through Friday at 3:306:30pm, Monday thru Thursday at 9-10:30pm, Friday & Saturday at 9-11:30pm. Sundays you can experience the ultimate crush hour from 4:30-10pm, with their weekly live jazz starting at 6:30pm. Crush hour will have you enjoying conversation while sipping on yummy martinis, special prices on whites and reds, featured beers and discountedlydelicious appetizers. Cosmos and cocktails line the crush hour menu, and are the perfect way for you to unwind with your gals. Oh, and appetizers—yeah, don’t even get me started. The YG’s Alsatian “Pizza” with crème fraiche and gruyere, the artisan cheeses, fondue, and delish flatbreads are all mouth-watering items to pair with your drinky-drink. Yum, yum, and yum! The Winery is the restaurant host to the best in wine country cuisine, offering wine pairings amidst their scrumptious menu (can I say ‘wine’ one more time? Hiccup!). If you decide to dine here for the whole shebang, you should know that Executive Chef & Partner Yvon Goetz is the spearhead behind the contemporary California regional menu. Yvon and the culinary team here use only the freshest ingredients—Opah, Ono and Mahi Mahi are jetflown in from Hawaii, landing in The Winery’s oversized, open-air gourmet kitchen, which diners get a window view into and directly to your plate. If crush hour hasn’t gotten you too tipsy, take a stroll over to the limestone and granitelined room called The Cellar. This large-scale, temperaturecontrolled wine cellar is located right inside the restaurant and home to up to 7,500 bottles of vino. A little bit of wine country right here in OC, who knew? Now you do.

Just down the freeway from this established wine country eatery is newbee boutique Bardot. Newport Beach has yet another fabulous boutique in the stylish Bardot— by the looks of the selection and retail goodness in this store, you’d never know that this is their first location, born March 2012. Neighbors with a popular local coffee shop and retro cupcakery, owner Dana Harmon knows that her boutique is someplace special. The name of this fashion spot is—you guessed it—inspired by Brigitte Bardot herself, whose quintessential seaside style made her a forever fashion icon. And we think Miss Bardot would be proud. The selection at this boutique is unreal. Harmon brings in a well-edited collection of pieces from both larger brands like Vince, 12th Street by Cynthia Vincent, and Haute Hippie, as well as up-and-coming designers like Clover Canyon, Otis & Maclain, and Golddust Dresses. Bardot is also the proud carrier of local OC designers Merritt Charles, Ceek, and KORE Swim, once again showing that love for the locals. Harmon’s goal “is to showcase unique yet accessible items that you can’t find anywhere else, [making] customers feel beautiful every time they put them on.” Love her! When you step into Bardot, you’ll get that bright and airy feeling that you’ve been invited into a space of California coastal fashion. At Bardot boutique, their customer service is another something bright, and a philosophy not to be overlooked. It’s obvious the staff here wants to build lasting relationships with customers and give them the personal shopping and styling service that really makes a boutique, a boutique! For that very reason, you can find owner Dana Harmon in her store each and every day, getting to know the sweet shoppers who stop by. It’s honestly a great spot to spend your afternoon shopping and browsing with the girls—maybe pre-crush hour, dare I say?

here’s a first time for everything, right? You took your first steps, had your first day of school, had your first love, and now it’s time for (yet another) first. Hey, it’s all gotta start somewhere, right? Now, it’s no secret that there are plenty of great date spots around adventure-town OC, but throw the whole ‘dinner-and-a-movie’ idea out the driver-side window and think outside the box. This summer, head to The Observatory on the border of Santa Ana and Costa Mesa (formerly known as The Galaxy Theatre). If you don’t yet know about this little treasure, then read on. This unassuming concert venue has been around for years, and chances are you’ve passed by it without even knowing how cool it is inside. The Observatory hosts big bands like Sea Wolf, Thrice, Shiny Toy Guns and the Silversun Pickups, and even local bands that have that crazy-cool cult following. On any given night you can see the latest in local talent while sipping a drink or noshing on dinner here, while wandering the vintage halls of The Observatory. When you drive up to this venue, it’ll sure have you guessing—what cool hotspot could possibly be off of Harbor Boulevard? Well hold your

breath, because once you enter the double doors of this local-goer concert venue, you’ll start to see the magic. It’s sorta like stepping back in time— high ceilings, big stage, dinner theatre-style booths so you can eat while enjoying the entertainment. There’s a big space up front for you to show your date your rock star moves and even get your dance on. Ticket prices here range anywhere from FREE to $25, so you can spend most of your cash on wining and dining your first date (if your rock star moves fail you). Great spot for great music on any given summer’s eve. And what shall you wear on this first date? Something to impress, of course! Lobby boutique at the hipster “anti-mall” that is The Lab in Costa Mesa is where you’re bound to find just the right threads. Step through the broken wall-shaped front entrance at Lobby and you’ve entered a fashion spot for both guys and gals unlike any other. Owner Ryan Jaso has done it all—experienced a boutique clothing line for years, worked in sales, marketing and production, even managed local artists. With Ryan’s latest love in this bite-sized but bountiful Lobby boutique, he’s proud to tell me about their recently celebrated 1-year anniversary in April.

Such a fun and fashionable celebration it was! Established in 2011, Ryan says, “we like to think in a digital world we bring the personal touch back to customer service by offering special orders to customers or calling them when their favorite lines come in.” Now that’s customer service, circa 2012! Their boutique specializes in unique brands for men and women, such as For Love & Lemons, Wildfox, Stylestalker, Chambers, Freshjive, Neon Brunette Vintage, Publish and Sabre, and even the occasional sprinkle of the local brands that often don’t have a place to call home in OC. I love how Lobby carries not only clothing for guys and gals, but also some items for the home and accessories too! Handmade jewels and stylish sunglasses will add those finishing touches to your Lobby outfit, and that special touch of style to show off on your first date. There is honestly a little something for everyone at Lobby, a sure spot for summertime shopping.

Saks Fifth Avenue 3333 Bristol Street Costa Mesa, CA 92626 saksfifthavenue.com

ast forward from first date and set your sights on the BIG 10—the anniversary date that’s a must celebration. Ten years is big, an entire decade together of getting through the small stuff and triumphing the big stuff. We are sure you feel deserving of a romantic night out and a good look to accompany. That’s why we say head to Saks Fifth Avenue at Costa Mesa’s epic South Coast Plaza for a little dressing up! In case you didn’t know, Saks Fifth Avenue was the fashion brainchild of Horace Saks and Bernard Gimbel. The pair operated independent retail stores on New York’s famous 34th Street way back when in the early 1900s. Saks and Gimbel dreamed of a fashionable specialty store, and years later that became a reality with the purchase of a site on upper Fifth Avenue. With the opening of this dream store in 1924, Saks Fifth Avenue was the first large retail operation in what was then primarily a residential district. Such a crazy thought in NYC! Over the decades, and now with 46 stores throughout 22 states, Saks has given its chic customers high quality men’s and women’s fashions,

aromas surrounding the famous Italian spot just steps away. Just behind Saks and all of the other tempting South Coast stores is Antonello Ristorante—a favorite among Orange County locals and Italian food connoisseurs. Since 1979, Antonello has prided itself on Old World Italian cuisine, which I later learned is described Cucina Nostalgica Italiana. All of the dishes here are made with nothing but the freshest ingredients, and each a perfected creation by Antonello’s serious chefs. A little assistance creeps in every now and again, of course, from owner Antonio Cagnolo’s mother, Mama Pina. (Gotta’ love that.) A menu filled to the brim with lovely antipastos, fresh pasta dishes, soups and salads, and even fish, poultry, veal and beef entrees—we’re guessing your taste buds are tingling even as you read! With more than 700 foreign and domestic wine labels, you’ll never go thirsty amidst these Italians either. Sit down in Antonello’s romantic, dimly lit dining room and crack open that dinner menu over a glass of wine. The antipasti selections are delicious, and just a warm-up to the gnocchi, linguine, fettuccine, spaghetti, or risotto comin’ your way. Italian-inspired steaks and seafood are up next, and make sure

In true department store fashion, Saks Fifth Avenue has a huge selection of not only men’s and women’s apparel, but shoes and handbags, jewelry and accessories, kids store, beauty and fragrance, and items for the home that you’ve shared for 10 years (plus!) together. With almost every brand in the book, Saks has it all for both the man and wife in this relationship, making it easy to find just the right outfit for your big anniversary night out. Might even be your one-stop-shop for picking up that perfect anniversary present too— just make it good. you try the lamb chops, which get rave reviews amongst regulars. Owner and proprietor Antonio Cagnolo and his staff just may not let you leave until you’ve shared one or two of Antonello’s desserts: the must-have are the profiteroles, which are small mocha custard-filled cream puffs mixed with chocolate and topped with hot ganache. Don’t tell me you can pass that up, can you? And if you want the BIG 10 anniversary dinner flavors to last, take home a bottle or two of Antonello’s famous gourmet pasta sauces. othing says summertime more than a night out under the So Cal summer stars, kickin’ back and listening to live music. Sounds dreamy, right? Well dream no more and get yourself over to Port Restaurant & Bar in the heart of Corona Del Mar. They’re serious about their music here at Port—every single night of the week there is a set of spectacular live music. Rock on! From acoustic pop and rock to international and flamenco, you can get in touch with all five senses just minutes from your home base. Because the music sets the scenery here at Port, the place has that grandly inviting vibe that makes you want to stay all night. Take a seat on their patio or heated atrium, and you just might want to stay all night. While you’re takin’ your time here, order up any of the amazing eats from Port’s contemporary continental menu. The self-proclaimed ‘best happy hour in town’ will hit the spot, with drink specials, and dollars off tapas, pastas, pizzas and more. Try out their infamous Port gnocchi, or the tiger shrimp kabob, seared ahi tuna, or calamari fritto, and you’ll be wow’d into ordering more. Port makes for a perfect night away, to soak in your day at the beach and then head over to this “ocean-side bungalow” of a destination. The cocktail menu is not to be beat—they’ve got all of the top-shelf fixings, including a killer selected list of vintage port (makes sense though, right?). Port knows its wine here—the wine list before you is a true testament to the expertise of their house sommelier. But don’t let their fancy wine list and live music soundtrack fool you, this Corona Del Mar restaurant and bar has a relaxed European aura about it, perfect for a night out. And what do you wear out to this all-day, all-night occasion of music appreciation? We’ll tell ya! Brand spankin’ new and runway ready, Corona Del Mar’s Delano Boutique

just opened its doors this summer. Congrats new Locale faves! Corona Del Mar can never have too many shops and boutiques, in my humble opinion, and the Newport Beachraised mother-daughter team that owns the spot is hittin’ the ground running. Owners Tamara and Britt Delano began designing their own line of luxury activewear, since they could never find yoga or gym wear that they loved. What’s unique about this shop and the DeLano style in general is that they strive to give shoppers a style that can take them from workout to night out. Boom. Versatile threads that can be simple and casual or layered and dressy is something hard for most fashionistas to pull off, but these gals wear it well! Prices range anywhere from $65 to $265, as they carry their own Delano brand along with cute, cute bracelets, stylish yoga mats and fun lil’ sandals. There’s a standout difference as you walk into the Delano boutique—the clean, contemporary and modern vibe inside this storefront has a sophisticated, European style with Southern California flair. You may just do a double-take when you peruse the Delano goods, as their stuff’s been seen worn by dancers from Dancing with the Stars and the stylish ladies of Real Housewives of Orange County. Delano Wear has actually existed online for a few years now, until the DeLano gals decided to take this milestone step and open up a brick and mortar. The Delano collection is actually handcrafted right here in OC, and constructed of wrinkle-free, quick drying fabrics imported from destinations like Brazil and Italy (ooh la la!). You can feel and sense the quality as soon as you put their activewear on your hot bod, and find that the gentlemen love the touch and feel of it too! It’s obvious that the Delano team spends a ton of time perfecting each and every design to give YOU the perfect cut and fit. Can’t go wrong there—especially when rockin’ their threads on a warm summer night with music under those stars.

An irreverent fashion column by Jennifer Hood, guest featuring Zech Francis of SOCIETY Clothing

Popsicles melting in the hands of passengers aboard runaway, beachbound motorcycles - that’s the picturesque rendition of this year’s summer. Hop along for the ride. This hot and heavy season calls for bright sorbet colors and sandy neutrals, vibrant patterns mixed with gritty accessories, and well-worn fabrics. Free and easy with a touch of rebel rouser is the idea. Grab your shades and your thongs (the ones for your feet) and start your engines. This summer will be a wet and wild one if we have any say in the matter.

Frozen bananas at the Balboa Fun Zone and then off to Blackies to troll for surfers in retro short trunks. It’s a hard life, but someone’s got to do it - preferably in summer-worthy pastels, patriotic high-waisted short shorts, fancy bra tops, sheer day dresses, and islander prints. Top it off with sassy shades and rough and tumble accessories. Now hail your knight on a shining Triumph and motor it to Newport Dunes for a movie on the beach under the stars. 1. Get your brain and body going with an espresso, or latte, or that beast of a drink with the whipped cream and the chocolate shavings in the shape of the Matterhorn. Shopping for an entire day is draining physically (walking miles in cute heels), emotionally (seeing your butt in full panormam thanks to that extra mirror in the dressing room is suicide), and financially (#OMGMyVisaIsMaxed). So grab a madefrom-scratch pastry (Kean carries local Blackmarket Bakery goodies), and get caffeinated for the day. 2043 Westcliff Drive, Suite 100 Newport Beach, CA 92660 (949) 642-5326 | www.KeanCoffee.com

The Hair Cut:

The Hair Color:

“Start with a precision cut that’s customized specifically for your texture and face shape as it will give you versatility to wear your hair loose and tousled for the beach or polished and professional for the work day. For product usage, keep it minimal. You don’t want to look as if you have anything in your hair. One of my favorites is Kerastase Elixir Ultime ($54). It’s perfect for all hair types and lengths, great for controlling frizz and adds a beautiful shine.” Tani Cole, Creative Director

“For the summer, brighten up your look with a soft, natural progression of deeper to lighter tones, adding highlights around the face. As seen in our Spring/Summer 2012 Collection, Athletica, complement blondes with warm, golden tones and pair rich brunettes with shades of bronze and nutmeg.” Adriana Harrison, Color Director

Please introduce yourself to our lovely fashionhungry readers. I am Nichole Carroll Designer/ Stylist of Tyler Rose Swimwear. TRS was born in 2001 and I currently call Costa Mesa home.

Tell us about the “aha” moment when Tyler Rose was born in your mind?

The Life and Times of Tyler Rose Swimwear’s Nichole Carroll

L

iving in Southern California means many of us spend nearly seventy percent of the year in a swimsuit, so a good bikini becomes like a best friend; you share all the best times together. It is a hunt every year to find the perfect suit, and in Tyler Rose Swimwear (TRS), I have finally found a place to pledge my bikini allegiance. Their collections of mix-andmatch bikinis open a door of endless fashion possibilities and the chance to really express your own personal style with their choices. The cut and functionality of these suits will have you simply beside yourself with excitement to be nearly naked this summer. I had a chance to sit down and chat with Nichole Carroll of TRS about what it takes to be the boss of the bikini babes.

by ERIN BELAIR Photography by JENAVIEVE BELAIR

When I graduated college, I wasn’t passionate about my career path. Rather than doing what everyone else said I should do, I decided to take a leap of faith and do what I loved, which was fashion. There were so many brilliant influences along the way, but my “aha” moment was a picture of my mother circa 1970 in a lavender bikini on a houseboat. I loved everything about it and wanted to recreate it. Eleven years ago no one was selling separates. As we all know, not everyone is onesize-fits-all. Since day one, I made it my mission to create a brand by designing a unique line that concentrated on the perfect fit sold as separates with the ability to be mix-‘nmatched. I always incorporate my personal style, inspirations, and all things I love.

I’m totally in love with the music you use on your website, tylerroseswimwear.com. What role does music play in your line? Thank you! I am completely influenced by my love of music. The Bikini Cave has music on all the time and has everything to do with my inspiration for my collections. Music simply lights up my passion. It helps guide and express my creativity.

What is the Bikini Cave? The Bikini Cave is our office, the Bikini Compound. It’s where all the magic happens. I’ve been calling it that for years.

That’s very Batman of you, I love it! Do you have any formal design training? Nope, self-taught. I am so fortunate to have a few amazingly talented friends who encouraged and guided me along the start of my journey. I’ve previously worked with a few apparel and shoe companies and while there, I learned a lot about the fashion industry and what it took to execute it all from start to finish. My passion, hands-on experience, creativity, and drive to “do and learn it all’ has taught me so much.

What/who are your greatest inspirations? It starts with my love of a band or musician, fashion icons, and The Glamour Era of Hollywood and Old Palm Springs. Anything vintage and everything 50s, 60s & 70s when taking a holiday really

meant something.

Where does a new line start for you? Anything can spark the inspiration. Then the vision of what I want to create is born. Mainly music helps to fuel the inspiration process. From there I create my inspiration board and go with my gut. I love turning old into new with a different updated twist and making it my own. Originality is key. I sit and cut all my samples for days, locking myself in the Bikini Cave, creating as I go, and operating in the present. I have collected so many amazing treasures over the years. I keep all the things I love around me in my Bikini Cave, and they are all a part of the creative process: books, music, magazines, clothing, records, fabrics, jewelry. I also ask a few of my close girlfriends and let them in on the process. After all, I design for them.

Tell us about the process a swimsuit sees going from dream to derriere... Inspiration, then I create my vision, which guides my creative process, hunting for and creating fabrics, always evolving my cuts, styles and bold colors and textures, creating combos to set myself apart. It all leads to locking myself away, creating bikini magic until I can’t cut samples any longer. Samples are then sewn and fit. It’s what I live for. The end result is creating a mix‘n-match bikini wardrobe which someone will covet as much as I do. It’s an amazing feeling to be able to do what you love and have someone else love and respect the process as much as you. Best reward.

What are your plans for the future? I am going to continue growing the TRS brand and currently we are in the process of expanding our junior line (T by Tyler Rose). The opportunities are endless. All my hard work is paying off, and I am very fortunate. The best is yet to come.

Where does the name Tyler Rose come from? I have a half-brother Tyler and a half-sister Erin Rose, my line is dedicated to my friends and family.

Do you wear your own designs? Absolutely, it’s the perk of making my own line. I am like a kid in a candy store everyday.

What makes your suits different than the other dozens selling at surf shops around here?

If you could paint the perfect scene for your suits to be worn in what would it look like?

We are known for the bikini that blends form and function without sacrificing esthetic appeal. I have created and styled my trademark suits born of classic Palm Springs, Old Hollywood style and infused them with the essence of the sun-kissed California girl.

On every poolside, beach, yacht and music festival from here, around the world and back. Imagine an afternoon where the breeze is warm and balmy, the sun is shining, the water is a perfect temperature, and the sounds of a killer summer playlist light up the background with the people you love.

What would your advice be for someone who wants to launch their own apparel line?

Laguna Beach Old Pottery Place 1200 S. Coast Highway, #106 Laguna Beach, CA 92651 949-715-4646

season to season so you can revamp the old with the new, which in turn creates a longer life for your favorite pieces. There are just so many options with TRS. We are proud to be made in the USA.

Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. Believe, know that anything you love and/or do takes work and lots of it but if you have passion, vision, focus and drive, a great work ethic mixed with originality you are already steps ahead of the rest. However much money you think it will take and however much time you think it will take, triple it! Most of all know what your strengths are and focus on those. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Learning from others' mistakes is perhaps the best way to strategize success.

What are some words you always live by?

Who is your target market? Who do you think of when designing new suits?

Water with organic lemon juice, boring but true. And if it’s a cocktail, I’m a huge tequila fan.

These suits – and the women in them – are glamorous and fierce. They pull no punches and take no prisoners. They’re not for the faint of heart and they are not to be taken lightly. Our target market is for the gal who exudes confidence, is a leader of fashion, and most of all, prides herself in being different from the rest. (We also have Mommy and Me (TRS Teenies) for ages 0-7.)

If you could choose anyone to wear your swimsuits, dead or alive who would it be? Brigitte Bardot and Alyssa Miller on the Cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue 2013! Creative Visualization ;)

What are you thoughts, theories, and methods on fabrics?

Walk poolside like it’s a runway. “Fashions fade — style is eternal.” -Yves Saint Laurent “There is no such thing as spending too much money on a bikini.” -my mother once told me. “Frankly, it’s most important to look your best when you are wearing the least.” -Gigi Mortimer

Favorite movie? Blue Lagoon, North Shore, Blow, The September Issue, 16 Candles, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Anchor Man, Scarface, and anything James Bond.

Favorite drink?

Favorite season? Bikini season!

Favorite vacation spot? Anywhere tropical, especially Haleiwa, North Shore

Favorite song? I have way to many to pick just one favorite, the list is long and all seem to be #1, but if I had to pick, it would probably start with a Zeppelin song.

Favorite spot in Orange County? Besides the Bikini Cave? HA! I love being outside riding my beach cruiser on the boardwalk.

Favorite lifestyle magazine? Of course, Locale!!

I can’t reveal my method to my bikini madness; it’s the sugar & spice to Tyler Rose Swimwear! But I can tell you that TRS is about building a bikini wardrobe, it is all about mix ‘n match, and you can buy a TRS bikini and combine them with any past, present and future collections. We also reintroduce trims, fabrics, colorways and details from

T

HE MILLENNIAL GENERATION OF LATE TEENS AND TWENTY-SOMETHINGS are preparing or currently forging ahead into adulthood via that American rite of passage, a career. This group of confident, liberal, upbeat and open-minded young adults were culled to have everything going for them, but they are coming up against a challenge when it comes to the job market. According to a Pew Research Center study in 2010, the 18 to 29-year-old Millennial generation, made up of about 50 million people, was found to be the ”most educated” generation to date as well as the most unemployed group of workers in the last four decades. Millennials are starting to doubt the promises that were written in rainbow chalk on their elementary school blackboards. “Follow your dreams and anything is possible.” How do you get to that perfect place high school counselors raved about, where salaries and life’s meaning meet? Brian McAllister, Mike Marriner, and Nathan Gebhard might have the roadmap. It’s called Roadtrip Nation, an experiential and educational platform for post grads and young adults to investigate their interests and their real world career applications in the communities beyond their doorsteps and the world beyond their county and state lines. Brian McAllister remembers the “now what?” post graduation sentiment. He is one of the founders of Orange County-based initiative Roadtrip Nation. What is it? It’s a business, a non-profit, an education approach, all centered around helping people find their road in life. “It’s a mindset,” says Brian McAllister. Eleven years ago, following their graduation from college, Brian, Mike, Nathan and a friend set off on a roadtrip in an old RV. The four were looking to interview people who inspired them and hopefully find their own life purpose and career paths along the way. Today that trip has morphed into a book deal, documentary, television series, speaking tour, production company, and educational initiative.

Brian motions to the green and blue RV we’re sitting in. It’s the same one they took their first roadtrip on. The RV is parked in the warehouse office of Roadtrip Nation in Costa Mesa. It’s staffed by about 40 employees who found their own career paths in the roadmap to purpose that Brian and his friends started by chance back in 2001. searching for the best way to unravel the story behind Roadtrip Nation. “This all started almost out of frustration,” he says. “My friends Mike, Nathan, Amanda and I didn’t identify with the career paths presented to us when we graduated from college.” The lack of direction prompted questions among the group. How do successful people get to where they are? Did they ever face ambiguity of purpose or did they always know what they were going to end up doing? “We realized we just needed to listen,” says Brian. “We started cold calling people who inspired us to ask them how they found the answers to these questions. Our initial interviews led to an idea.” The four post grads bought Brian’s parents’ old RV and decided to take a roadtrip. Their goal was to meet these passionate people face to face, interview them, learn from them, and hopefully find their own road along the way. They bought some video cameras to document the trip, and with little planning, set off in search of answers. What started as a simple road trip sparked a lifelong journey none of them could have imagined when they left their Orange County homes. Somewhere along their interviews and searching across America, they met a Forbes Magazine writer who was inspired by their voyage. She wrote a story on them for the prominent publication. The Forbes article led to a book deal with publishing giant Random House. The book released in 2002 and led to a book signing tour and TV spots on NBC’s “Today Show” and “ The Carson Daily Show” to name a few. All the while, Brian and his friends were taking the footage from their road trip and editing it down into a documentary called “The Open Road.” The searching college grads had turned into authors, producers, filmmakers, and the headline speakers at colleges and schools across America. It had only been a year since they had set out with no real master plan, and here they were with their lives in full-time promotion of their story, their book, and their film. From the outside looking in, it seemed that the four had found their calling. But they weren’t there yet. Amanda stepped away from the project to become a teacher, the career path she had found her purpose in through their trip. Brian, Mike and Nathan remained and prepared to push the roadtrip mentality even further. “The more we shared our stories with students and searching young adults,

the more we wanted those people to be able to do their own road trip and find their own answers,” explains Brian. “We didn’t want to be motivational speakers. We wanted to create a platform for others to road trip and find meaning.” Brian, Mike and Nathan decided to make their recent experience into a community outreach business.

The group’s transition from speakers to road trip recruiters would not be a hard one. From their speaking tours they had already made connections with college career centers across the nation. With all the publicity from their book and documentary, it was relatively easy to secure funding from corporations. They put the plans together and garnered the funding to create Roadtrip Nation, an outfit that would give opportunity to a new team of searching roadtrippers. Within one more year Roadtrip Nation was live and their team of second generation roadtrippers were heading out in the blue and green RV with their own film crew. One RV became three. The teams grew. PBS created a TV show around their adventures that still airs today, currently reaching 80 million households. Despite their huge success, the guys still felt that Roadtrip Nation had not reached its full potential. The utmost ease of participation was always the driving force behind their company. They wanted as many people as possible to be able to learn and grow from Roadtrip’s offered experience, which led to the question: why restrict roadtrips to RVs and teams based out of the company’s Orange County headquarters? Brian, Mike and Nathan decided to drop the iconic blue and green RVs and encourage self-formed teams and even individuals to take their own roadtrips in their own vehicles. No matter what the vehicle, the story and the findings behind each roadtrip were what was crucial to share. Usergenerated content remained the cornerstone. Content was the key to the collective learning and growing that Roadtrip Nation was formed to foster and promote.

There was a man named Michael Jager who owned his own design firm. He told me in an interview, “the world will conspire to support you. You just have to do everything with distinction.” I will never forget that.

2

My favorite interview was with Dr. John Craig Venter. He was the scientist who decoded the human genome, arguably one of the most important discoveries of the 21st century. It turns out he went to Orange Coast College back in the day. He would go to school and surf during the day and then tag inventory at Sears at night. He had no clue what he would do with his life. Then he was drafted into the war and that’s how he learned medicine. That began a lifelong

15% Blogs, video footage, written interviews, and photos were collected from hundreds of roadtripper interviews and put onto roadtripnation.com. The website was becoming a vault of interviews and information on successful people, businesses, and careers. “Everyone knows what they’re good at or what they enjoy doing,” says Brian. “What they learn through us is that their interests can have a place in the world and workplace. An interest-based approach is the foundation of everything we do here. Roadtrippers choose their interests, and then we facilitate the investigation of it from different angles and applications.” Brian and his growing team continued to push the boundaries of how to inspire personal successes. Their movement had always hinged on educating, but now they would formally align their efforts with the hubs of American learning, our schools. Roadtrip Nation created RoadtripNation.org, “an education organization with curricula focused on helping high school students explore pathways and possibilities for their future.” “Really, the younger you are the more in tuned you are to

career in science and medicine. He told me, “I could’ve done this when I was five. I used to blow things up and put them back together all the time. Now I use computers to do the exact same thing.”

3

From that first trip, the common thread among all our interviews was that there was never a plan - at least not a linear plan. Their success and meaning came about through perseverance and overcoming adversity, not by knowing every exact move to make.

The whole goal is to inspire selfdiscovery, career exploration, community engagement, and ultimately exposure to possible future pathways. Students then create content about their findings and share it with roadtripnation.org through their own personal online profiles and blogs. “You have to engage young people and students,” says Brian. “You have to encourage them to ask ‘why’ and then show them how their course work and classes are applicable to what interests them and what is going on in the real world.”

Today Brian, Nathan, and Mike continue to lead Roadtrip Nation on into further accessibility. The media side of the company is stretching its reach out into other countries, licensing content to spread the Roadtrip message. Brian still believes that the local hub is where the success of the initiative will stem from - local teachers, parents, students, and business owners who are passionate about seeing their communities and youth thrive. The team has high hopes for the futures of their Roadtrip grads and the Roadtrip program. “Nate believes we’ll inspire the person who will go on to cure cancer,” smiles Brian. And he believes it.

isiting Disneyland has become a rite of passage in America. Almost anyone who lives in southern California has childhood memories studded with the nostalgia of visits to the magical place where anything is possible with a little bit of pixie dust; of walking Main Street while eating ear shaped ice creams; stopping, awe struck, to let our faces light up under the glow of summer-night fireworks. From the moment you push the turnstile, you enter a world of fantasy and imagination. A land where your favorite characters -- the heroes of your dreams -- become real and those very same dreams don’t seem so far away. That’s all Walt ever wanted for us. Band Name: Jeramiah Red Established: 2008 Hometown: Brea, CA Band Members: Wes Dickson Vocals/Guitar Ian Cullen Guitar/Vocals Tim Miller Bass Matt Pleskacz Drums Travis Ruiz Harmonica/Percussion Website: www.jeramiahred.com

When did Jeramiah Red start playing together, and how did you become a band? We started playing in 2008. We are a product of two former bands that weren't quite satisfying our musical needs anymore.

What was the location of your first gig? Besides Matt's living room, the first actual venue we played was The Whiskey. It was a pay-to-play kind of thing.

What local band(s) influence your music? Robert Jon & The Wreck, Nicole Vaughn & Her Lovely Band, The Silent Comedy and Brett Schickling

Where was your favorite place you played? The New York-New York in Vegas was awesome for the experience. Red Bull treated us great, and 139

we got to play with Brandon Summers, an amazing Violinist. The Fox Theater in Pomona is also a new favorite, because the venue itself is unreal and they made our band sound huge. The OCMA's was great too.

You recently won the Best New Artist tag at the OC Music Awards. What is the next award you are shooting for? Best Old Artist and Best Live Band

What was the largest and smallest group you have played in front of? The Largest is a tossup between The Fox Theater, OC Fair or the OC Music Awards. I'm not that good at estimating crowd sizes, but I'm going to guess the OC Fair. There are already thousands of people there, and we were in front of a lot of them. The smallest was definitely in Monterey Bay. We played in front of the bartenders, and Travis' girlfriend.

SummaTime 2012

Is it more fun to play live or record in a studio? Live, definitely. Recording in a studio is a bit too isolated. We really feed off of the energy of the crowd. It's a blast. There's nothing else like it.

If you were playing Guitar Hero, which band would you be? Booby J & The Tag-a-longs or Timber Bitz

If we are one of your adoring fans and we see you out to lunch locally, we will most likely be eating where? Pretzels and Mustard at The Shady Nook

Where can we watch you play? We're going to be on a Summer Tour for most of July and part of August, but we will be back performing at the Angel game on August 10th, so grab a beer and a hot dog, and come hang out.

e u g a e L Their Wheels Go ‘Round And ‘Round All Through the OC Community

N

ever in my life did I expect to learn such a well-seasoned lesson in a building just off the 22 freeway in Orange. Filled with junior high and high school-aged, local skateboarders, Emo haircuts and TOMS shoes, I felt the strong sense of community and determination to make an impact. On a normal weeknight in Orange County when many of us are at happy hour, watching American Idol or hanging out with our families, there is a meaningful ritual and family gathering occurring for the National Scholastic Skateboarding League (NSSL). A little known, but rapidly expanding, tribe of passionate young skater guys and chicks, the NSSL started planting its roots in March 2010. Founder and President of the league Katrina Foley started the group when she saw a need in her own son. Katrina is the mom of a kid, like many other kids in OC, with a longtime passion for skateboarding. She noticed that her son young Foley was glued to his board. Katrina started to pay close attention to her son and his friends. They skated on the

streets and in shopping centers that mostly shooed them away; and finally, Katrina realized these skater kids just needed a venue that was friendly, encouraging

let the rubber meet the road. With her own personal connections to the city council and the school board, Foley asked a few schools and districts to implement skateboarding clubs and make this thing official. Those skateboarding clubs grew quickly amongst junior high and high schoolers at a few select schools in Orange County, and pretty soon, teachers were on board and supportive of the idea. When four teams of young skateboarders grew to 23 teams of young skateboarders, Katrina and her closest confidants knew they were onto something.

This team is the brains behind the operation of the NSSL, and what really makes the wheels turn (pun intended) these kids to keep up something that they loved and did well. After a few meetings and brainstorming sessions with friends and community members, Katrina Foley

The NSSL is now fully established as a non-profit charitable organization comprised of 11 active board members, team parents, school faculty advisors, volunteers and skate coaches. The board members meet on a regular basis, coming up with grassroots ways to support the kids, find outlets for them to skate and compete, and brainstorm additional ways to connect these students to make a community. This team is the brains behind the operation of

the NSSL, and what really makes the wheels turn (pun intended). Being a skateboarding club that’s a part of the NSSL allows students to compete and attend skating events and competitions at some of the major skate parks in the county, get private coaching from pro skaters, and even take regular tours of big-name skate companies in the area. Requirements for being a skateboarding club established within the NSSL are: having a minimum of 5 riders to make a team; and, all riders must achieve a 2.0 GPA or higher in order to compete in any of league’s events, which Katrina affirms is a great way to keep the students motivated to make the grade and stay in school, while practicing something they love. Tonight I’m at one of the NSSL’s many events in Orange County at the Vans Skatepark in Orange, watching skater kids of all ages compete. I walk into a skate park full of proud moms and dads, young spectators, and junior high and high school-aged skaters who are warming up for their big competition. The energy and sheer volume in this room is what strikes me – I’ve never seen so many junior high and high schoolers excited to be in a room with their parents, void of eye-rolling and embarrassment. Skateboards hit the ground, tiny board wheels roll across the stagelike skate banks, and kids watch each other and observe, hoping they’ll be just as good when they’re up next. Students from all over are here to compete and show their stuff. When 145

I find NSSL Founder Katrina Foley amidst the crowd, she’s wearing her proud-Mom face, eager to introduce me to NSSL students and some of her board members who are helping out with tonight’s competition, judging, emcee’ing, scorekeeping, and just plain cheerleading. After a few minutes of chatting with Foley, I ask her what her favorite part of all of this is. “Camaraderie,” she said. “It’s not like any other sport; there is no rivalry and everyone is supportive of all of the teams here. There’s a closeness and a feeling of community.” She ends her sentence and pivots to watch her son as he hits the floor to compete. Katrina and I watch him together, and I know this place is something special.

Karena Gibbs, an NSSL board member as well as a school psychologist, tells me in an enthusiastic voice all about all of the benefits she sees the students carry when they join in the NSSL community. Karena grew up skating. You can still tell by her laid-back style (old school Vans included) and approachable demeanor that she still has a heart for the sport. Gibbs was a teacher and long-time school administrator, and she, without a doubt, believes in the project and the ways the students become connected and grow by being part of a community that stresses the importance of being an all-around good athlete. The more I talk to Karena, the more I hear about another one of the fantastic facets of the NSSL – the company tours. Between ride time, students get to take full tours of major skate enthusiast companies like Volcom, Vans, RVCA where they learn all of the ways they can apply their passions to the real world when they grow up. Whether it’s art, design, accounting, photography

SummaTime 2012

or videography, there’s a culture of active sports at companies like this right here in the OC, and these kids get the inside track just for being a part of the NSSL. I stop to talk to Sandro Viola, a junior in high school from San Clemente. Sandro won first place in his last skate competition, and tonight he’s back for more. He tells me of his victories, “the more I think about it, the less good I do. I just like to skate.” He goes on to tell me that he loves that there’s no rivalry, just a family and sometimes that’s just what these kids need. When Sandro “grows up” he tells me he wants to work in the [skateboarding] industry. I think he’s on the right track after what I’ve witnessed here.

Alex Barragan, a Northwood High School junior from Irvine has been skating for four years and loves it. All of his friends are in the NSSL, and they practice together at different spots all over the OC. Alex’s skate coach is a pro skater, and he’s had the unique opportunity to skate at the Volcom skate park, amongst other parks in the county. Ava Cavanaugh, a local seventhgrade skater girl who’s about half my size, rolls up to me to check out why I’m here tonight. Ava is one of six girls in the league, and she’s one tough little cookie. She tells me how sometimes it’s intimidating to be skating around all of these older boys, but she finishes by saying, “I come out and try hard, and my parents come to support me.” Sarah Thompson, another girl in the league, is equally brave and spunky. Sarah has been skating for just over two years, and she’s come a long way since she’s been with the NSSL, her mom tells

me. “Sarah’s grades have gone up, her excitement for life has spiked and she sets real goals for herself,” says mom. Sarah tells how she loves the cheers she gets when she competes but also loves the companies and entrepreneurship she’s learned about since being involved. Thompson is sponsored by Silly Girls Skateboards, which she herself tells me about with a humbled, yet sparkling, realization that she’s really going somewhere. When asking students, teachers, parents and board members what stands out to them the most about the NSSL, there’s an answer that gets repeated over and over again: the community. Whether it’s John Rael, the team parent who gets students their paperwork and drives carpool, or Tristan Stegmaier a teacher at Northwood High School and NSSL team coach, everyone involved boasts about this feeling of family and supportiveness. Stegmaier tells me “skating is a microcosm of life. These kids learn discipline; they mentally overcome hurdles, and grow so much during these years.” He’s watched 16-yearolds become 18-year-olds and seems amazed at the progress and improvement they make. “Plus, parents know where their kids are four times a week.” Tristan sees how students are able to show their parents that they are reliable, they can achieve goals, and work for something they’re passionate about, which is a valuable lesson for anyone. Expect to hear more about the NSSL community over the coming years as they expand throughout California and eventually nationwide. ith summer around the corner, feeling a little more adventurous, determined to try something new, I shed my work attire for outdoor gear and decided to feed the adrenaline junky in me by putting the pedal to the metal on a go-kart track. I had heard about K1 Speed. It sounded fast. Winding through the nicely groomed streets of Irvine, the location immediately sparked my interest. It was surrounded by corporate businesses with people in suits running to and fro. I wondered what business they had racing go karts?

PEDAL TO THE

There was no putt-putt within my range of sight, and to this, I was relieved. There was also no pot-bellied man eating cotton candy and taking tickets like the usual gokart venue, another win for K1 racing. In fact, all the employees were rather handsome. I thought I could spend some serious time here. It was just then that a go-kart went whizzing by in my peripheral vision, tearing around a tight turn, and taking off again. Jiminy Crickets! I could not have been more wrong in my pre-go-kart judgments. I knew right away this was no ordinary run of the mill go-kart track. Guiding me toward a kiosk with computers, I was required to fill out proper information to legally allow myself to race. Any one under the age of 18 needs an adult to sign off and every driver must be at least four feet and ten inches tall. Every few moments I would hear the karts turn the corner, and my attention would be immediately stolen. It was at this moment I also noticed we were inside and I wasn’t choking on exhaust. There was not a single trace of environmentally hazardous, stomach turning noxious gas that is usually emitted by go-karts. This led to my first question.

by Erin Rose Belair photography by jenavieve belair

These karts top out at close to 45 mph and take a turn like a champion.

I learned that K1 Racing exclusively uses electric karts. Score one for K1. Their karts are badass and environmentally conscious. Using electric motors also allows them to offer more than double the horsepower of traditional gas-powered karts. These karts top out at close to 45 mph and take a turn like a champion. Without becoming the next Danika Fitzpatrick, this was as close as I was going to get to the Daytona 500. To say I was excited is an understatement. I was downright giddy like a schoolgirl on her first date. We went through a brief safety tutorial on the colored flags, the pedals, how to reverse, and the few, but very important, rules like no bumping. These are not bumper cars they are racecars and while it is all fun and games, safety here is no joke. After the serious stuff was over, I put on my helmet and began sizing up my competition. Two sizeable tracks with tricky turns in each take up most of the facility. During special events they can move the barriers and make one huge track. The karts were all waiting in the pit and we were each assigned a number. They flipped a switch on each kart as I buckled in and got a handle on the steering wheel. Of the two tracks, a race was already taking place on one. While waiting to begin, I watched the other drivers for pointers. I liked the way number seven took the turns tight but he seemed to slide out and the guy behind him caught up at every curve. I made a note to get my technique down immediately so I could school all these other drivers. The time had come and we slowly rolled out of the pits together. Because the karts are electric, they can remotely operate them and control your speed while coming in and out of the pits. They can also remotely shut your kart off in case of an emergency. We crossed the start line and suddenly my kart had a life of its own. It revved up beneath me, and we took off into the first turn. Clearly my competitors had done this once or twice as I was quickly left in the dust. It didn’t take long, maybe the next two turns (a quick twenty seconds) before I figured out what was what. When I did figure it out, it was on, pedal to the metal indeed. As I started to gain more confidence, I went faster

I decided I was happy with my performance and my next thought was:

let’s do it again!

and faster and started to catch karts eight and nine. It was difficult to maneuver around the other karts but as soon as I saw an opening on the straightaway I was through and onto bigger and better things. Sometime in my fourth or fifth lap I started to test just how fast I could take the turns. This was where things got a bit tricky. There is a science and method to the madness. If you take the turn too tight you’ll skid out and lose control. If you take it too wide you risk being passed by other drivers, and if you take it too slow, well that’s just no fun. So after a few rounds, I developed a method in which I would take the turn tight and fast and let off the gas to control my drift. My knuckles were white from gripping the steering wheel, my cheeks hurt from smiling, and my heart was beating through my chest. No one could hear my self-motivated cheering and squealing over the screech of tires and roar of the engines, but I think that’s for the best. By the time the race ended after an adrenaline-pumping, side-splitting 14 laps, I managed to come in third place. I decided I was happy with my performance and my next thought was: let’s do it again! K1 Speed is open seven days a week to the public as late as 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. I had done what they call an “arrive and drive” in which you show up, sign up, pay 20 dollars, and then race. They also offer a slew of packages if you come with at least eight drivers, you can rent out one of the two tracks. They can rent out the entire facility for corporate events, birthday parties and Bar Mitzvahs. One of the best parts about K1 Speed is that they remember, even if we don’t, that fun isn’t just for the kids. If anything, this place is geared towards adults having a good time. Seriously throw your husband’s next birthday party here and you’ll be getting praise all year long. They also have meeting rooms with wireless access and 110’ display screens for corporate occasions. I can’t think of a better way to reward your employees or build team morale and camaraderie. It’s fun, innovative and seriously awesome. K1 Speed is constantly expanding, because people just can’t get enough of it, operating now in five different states at over a dozen locations with two in Orange County: Irvine and Anaheim. K1 Speed has special deals to keep you coming back like buy two races get one free, a Groupon deal coming out every three months, and 5 dollars off if you check-in on Facebook or Foursquare upon arrival. You can visit their website k1speed.com for all operating hours, pricing, and locations. You can also read up on all the incredible avenues K1 Speed offers for you to explore racing. There are classes you can take to brush up on your skills. There are leagues you can join to flex your competitive side, and there are junior karts at many locations in case you want to start training your kids to be the next Mario Andretti. Never again in my life will I scoff at go-kart racing as a carnival past time. K1 Speed means serious business and serious speed. It was only days before I went back again.

iriam and Olivia Nervo were born and raised in the Melbourne suburb of Ivanhoe. By the age of 16, the duo had made a name for themselves on the modeling scene, but really wanted to pursue music. After their acceptance into the Opera Australia Academy, the sisters decided to diversify and focus on a pop music career. NERVO are Mim and Liv Nervo. They emerged as hit songwriters for acts ranging from Kesha to Kylie; Guetta & Rowland; Pussycat Dolls and more. They've remixed Katy Perry, 30 Seconds to Mars, Cobra Starship, topping club and sales charts worldwide. Their big break-through as songwriters came when they co-wrote Guetta's worldwide smash "When Love Takes Over," featuring Kelly Rowland, which charted at #1 in 11 countries across the globe. They embarked on their second bus-tour of USA in late June, supporting Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj on the Femme Fatale arena shows, launched a Las Vegas residency with the Wynn Group, and then they hit the uber-cool Identity run, with the hottest talent on the electronic scene. We caught up with the beautiful and talented twin sisters when they played a sold out show at the Yost Theatre in Santa Ana.

SYNCHRONIZED SOK:

Who wanted to become a DJ first? We had a bunch of friends in London and a lot of them were DJs. They were budding lawyers, accountants, bankers and whatever, but they were all DJs. We just started with them. It was a natural progression

Is there much bickering over the music and/ or style that you play, or do you have similar musical tastes? We are constantly pushing each other. We fight about what music to play all the time. It is a creative squabble.

Is there more work involved in the making of the music or playing it live? Making the music. Coming up with an idea can happen very quickly. We can write a song in half a day, but it can take weeks and weeks to produce the record.

What part of performing live gives you the biggest thrill? Seeing people react to your records. To bring that happiness and excitement to other people gives us such a kick.

Which DJ taught you the most? We spent every day for a month on the bus with DJ Chuck-E and he just knows how to read a crowd so brilliantly. He

mixes other people records to keep the energy going the whole time. He has given us a few pointers. He will tell us, "you should have played this longer” or “...hold the crowd longer, you had them.”

SOKAHOLIC PASS:

Have you ever made a big mistake? I pulled out the SD card on the wrong CD. Mim pulled out a speaker cord mid-set; she was trying to charge her phone and pulled out the speaker cord. It was silent for like 20 seconds.

What is the smallest crowd you have played in front of? What was the largest? Last year at ID in Tampa we played in a small tent up against Aoki and Kaskade and only four fans showed up, so we asked them to come up on stage. The great thing was that our friend DJ Chuck-E joined us and played alongside us for the same four fans. Tomorrowland festival [largest crowd), and I am really bad at this but would guess about 40,000.

allroom is back. The renaissance period tradition of formal dancing in front of large groups has experienced a world-wide revival. There are televised dancing competitions in 30 countries acrosss the globe from Albania to Vietnam. In Orange County, The Newport-Mesa chapter of The Assistance league felt that by combining the popularity of ballroom with the following of local celebrities they could raise money for a great cause.

It was truly one of the greatest nights of my life; an experience that will never leave my heart.”

Since 1940, The Assistance League of Newport Mesa has funded various local charitable programs that benefit children of our community. Locale Magazine was contacted by The Assistance League and asked if our resident “right-arm,” Ashley Hickson, would participate as a celebrity contestant in Dancing for Tomorrow’s Stars. After getting over her fear of public performance, she agreed and set out to help raise public attention and funding along with five other celebrity dancers. The event surpassed the Assistance League’s high hopes for these charitable programs by raising over $100,000. Thanks to the tireless work put in by the committee, co-chairs, volunteers and dancers, the Assistance League of Newport-Mesa has already been able to clothe 1,569 kids, provide dental care and screening to 3,206 children, and served a total of 5,479 adults and children this year alone.

Did you have experience as a dancer before you were asked to compete? I danced ballet as a child, but hadn't practiced any ballroom dancing until my lessons started on February 1st.

How many hours did you have to practice to get ready for your performance? Century Dancesport in Tustin gave us 25 lessons, which are each 45 minutes long, to practice with our professional dance partners.

Who was your dancing partner? How much help was he?

Event Chairperson: Jill Ayres Celebrity dancers: Ashley Hickson, Sara Guggenheim Jarrett, Brett Lawrence, Heidi Miller, Adam Aldrich, and Mike Sanchez. Professional Dancers: Slawek Rozsak, Eddie Alba, Natalie Schultz, Melaina Larson, Eric Turcio and Alessia Minaeva. Judges: celebrity attorney Leigh Steinberg; entrepeneur David MacInnis, and member of the American Ballet and English National Ballet, Christina Lyons. Beneficiaries: Cheri Harris Children’s Dental Health Center, Operation School Bell, Kids on the Block, and Community Outreach Program.

Slawek Rozsak was my professional dancing partner and he was a complete joy to be working with. He is an incredibly skilled dancer and was helpful in teaching the methods and routine; but what I really appreciated was his ability to make me keep my nerves down and enjoy the whole experience for what it was.

What were you told would be the hardest thing to learn? The lifts of my paso doble and the speed of the quickstep were what I expected to be the most difficult, but personally, the challenge of performing in front of so many influential people of our community is what presented my biggest hurdle. Luckily, Slawek was able to keep me laughing, along with Jill Ayres & Jim McAleer's reminders that we were there to have fun and raise money for the children.

Did your partner ever drop you? HAHA . . . No, thankfully, but I'm sure there were times when he wanted to! I was pretty certain that I would be getting sick after one of the lifts, but luckily my adrenaline was running too high for my body to notice its nausea.

How did you choose your music? Slawek and I went over a few songs together, and both agreed on Adele's Set Fire to the Rain, and Hey Pachuco from The Mask. Both had great energy and flowed wonderfully with the dances he choreographed, so they were a perfect fit. I'm really happy that we went with both of those songs, because you hear them so much throughout practicing that if there was anything about the song you didn't like, you could easily hate it by performance time.

Do you plan on continuing your dance education? Yes, absolutely. I have taken a few lessons since the performance and can't imagine not continuing dancing, especially with Slawek as my partner.

How did your dancing help the local community, and would you do it again?

Dancing for

Our dancing raised money for the Assistance League of NewportMesa's philanthropic programs, which mainly benefit children in the local area. They provide new clothing for children in the upcoming school years and dental work for those children whose families may not be able to afford it. I would absolutely both help the ALNM raise money in any way again, as the league was a pure joy to work with, and would LOVE to relive our Dancing for Tomorrow's Stars event. It was truly one of the greatest nights of my life, an experience that will never leave my heart.

great team of agents to not only sell our product but to represent individual homeowners and investors with the same level of service and expertise.

Which house that you built are you most proud of?

haute cakes caffe What prompted you to enter the field of real estate?

Nourishing the Neighborhood Since 1990

Since a very young age, I have had an interest in the real estate business. Was it being on the construction site at seven years old when my parents built our family home or touring large-scale condominium and hotel towers in major cities in college with a close family developer friend? I’m not sure … it’s just something that has always been in my blood. From the construction and development aspect, I really enjoy creating nice environments and improving homes and neighborhoods. From a brokerage aspect, I really enjoy negotiating deals for people and putting them in homes that are truly right for them from both a financial perspective and lifestyle perspective. I know I am in the right business when I can go home after a long day feeling like I have never worked a day in my life. This business is a true passion.

What was the scariest part of the housing downturn? There were a number of scary aspects of the housing downturn. I was determined to preserver and make it through … to be one of the last men standing. It was very disheartening to see capitalism and our free markets come under attack. America’s free market capital system has created more opportunity, more innovative ideas, products and services than any other system in the history of the world. I looked at the down turn as more of an opportunity than a disaster.

Why did you choose Balboa Island for your new home base? I have always loved Balboa Island. For years it has been my evening jogging venue of choice. Over the years, I have developed a number of spec residences on the Island and thought it would be a great home for my full service real estate operation. Since opening the office last spring, we have contracted with a number of Island residences to build them their own custom residence, represented a number of Island residences with the sale or leasing of their homes, and currently have several spec residences under construction.

Prior to the recession, I was primarily a developer of infill tract housing projects and coastal spec houses. During the recession I realized that I needed to create efficiencies and bring all aspects of the business under one roof. For starters, I created Waterpointe Custom Homebuilders Inc. This allowed me to control the construction process. Tightening the belt and controlling costs was very important. Waterpointe Custom Homebuilders has allowed me to do just that. Our cost of construction dropped drastically as did the time it took to build a house. As a perfectionist, controlling the quality and warranty service process was equally as important. We have a great team. Now instead of just building houses for my development company Waterpointe Homes, I am able to pass on the same value and service to individual homeowners looking to build their own home. This year I will probably build more custom homes for individuals than for my development company. I also created Waterpointe Real Estate Group, a luxury boutique brokerage office on Balboa Island. We have a

I am always most proud of the next one, because in order for there to be a next one, it means that a potential client or buyer has recognized the quality and value of a past home that we have built and are willing to make an investment to purchase one of our spec homes or entrust us to craft their future custom residence. I always strive to make the next one even better than the last one. I truly enjoy creating homes for families to create memories. The most touching comment I have ever received about one of our homes came the other day from a four-yearold little girl after her first visit with her parents to her new home in the Port Streets that we had completed earlier that day. Her comment was: “This is unbelievable.” To me, we do more than just build houses. We build homes.

Where do you see your company in ten years? I strive to have a brand that ten years from now, is so well known and so respected as a marquee of quality, value and service that nobody in Newport Beach would even consider building a custom residence without at least giving us the opportunity to meet.

Who do you admire locally? I have great admiration for the products and destinations that Irvine Company Chairman Donald Bren has created. From the residential housing developments, office and retail projects all the way to what I consider the crown jewel of the California coast The Resort at Pelican Hill, every detail is attended to and maintained with pride.

What is your favorite secret local restaurant for lunch? If I told you then it would no longer be a secret. For lunch, I can usually be found sitting at the bar at R&D Kitchen eating a Mediterranean tuna salad, watching CNBC or at Gary’s Deli in Corona Del Mar.

What do you love most about your Balboa Island location? I feel very blessed to have a morning commute that consists of PCH, Bayside Drive and Marine Avenue. There is something about driving over the island bridge every morning that puts a smile on my face. The design of our office is more that of a luxury coastal home than an office, which makes going to the office a pleasure. I feel that the office has been very well received by the island.
