Home is the nicest word there is. -Laura Ingalls Wilder The home should be the treasure chest of living. -Le Corbusier At the end of every vacation, I am genuinely dragging my feet, bags, and fiancé begrudgingly across the airport as we make for the most dreadful of all places—home. We have to leave these blue skies, palm trees and beautifully concocted cocktails for the horror that is our California lifestyle. Can you imagine? Upon arriving home, even leaving the airport, our now refreshed eyes send a signal to our recently washed brains. "Look around," they tell us, "Do you see how beautiful this place is?" they inquire. Can this be the place we left? Why did we ever leave? Absence makes the heart grow fonder and the eye more attuned. That is how home feels and why we always return. In our second issue in our newly adopted home (we hope you loved the pineapple patterned inaugural issue and it is still on your coffee table), we hope to show you the wonderful
place you call home from our perspective, with freshly rubbed eyes. We begin with an interview with world renowned chef Wolfgang Puck who dishes (literally) about his Palm Desert restaurant WP Kitchen + Bar (pg. 30). Talk with architecture superstar Chris Pardo about his new project Arrive Hotel (pg. 94), explore Joshua Tree (pg. 88) and set up a fantasy dinner at The RitzCarlton (pg. 112). We then add color to your life with the ever bright and bold Trina Turk (pg. 56), ride scooters with social phenom "Two Dudes" (pg. 72), get Yogi fashionable at Korakia (pg. 44) and take you shopping at our favorite spots around the valley (pg. 84). I would take a deep breath if I could, but in our "content is king" driven publication, we still show you awesome workouts, take you on our version of the perfect day, show you a sneak into an amazing new restaurant, look at midcentury modern homes and ...... (I officially ran out of breath before stories). You get it.

Making THE ISSUE
Joe Magnani and Jared Schlachet of JSquared photography captured the portraits of Wolfgang using a Canon 5D Mark III with a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. “To light, we used 2 Profoto Acute 2 packs,” Jared said. “The key light was a Elinchrom Rotalux and the full was a small Photek umbrella. The light on the background was a 7" reflector diffused,” he noted. The team did some classic kitchen looks in studio with Wolfgang in his chef’s coat and some with him looking fly in a suit. Shooting at Wolfgang’s Beverly Hills restaurant, Spago, was a blast. Spago's renovated design from Waldo Fernandez serves as the perfect backdrop with its clean and simple aesthetic, incorporating natural elements to add an organic feel. Not to mention the kitchen that the team was able to shoot in was a ton of fun, as well. Don’t let Wolfgang with a knife in hand scare you—he’s the sweetest and even took a moment on camera for Instagram to say how much he loves LOCALE.

Ò My boyfriend and I love to watch movies at the Palm Springs Regal cinema after work. For quick pre-movie bites, we go to Appetito for the Crispy Brussels Sprouts and handmade-pastas, Pho 533 for Vietnamese fusion, or Sherman’s Deli for good old-fashioned deli fare and yummy desserts. regmovies.com/theatres appetitodeli.com pho533palmsprings.com shermansdeli.com
Ò Monday is a perfect day to drive up to Landers for a sound bath at Integratron and then a tour of Gubler Orchids right across it. For breakfast, try La Copine on Old Woman’s road on the way. For lunch drive to out to Crossroads at the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park for their vegetarian options. After exploring the park, go to Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown place for family style Tex-Mex cuisine and the live music. integratron.com gublers.com crossroadscafejtree.com pappyandharriets.com
Ò Another escape is the quaint town of Idyllwild 45 minutes away in the mountains. Take Hwy 74 back and stop at El Paseo and enjoy its ‘Rodeo Drive’ appeal. There are so many places to dine, but I happen to love Trattoria Tiramisu, which is tucked away and offers you authentic Italian cuisine served by Italian-speaking waiters. elpaseocatalogue.com tiramisutrattoria.com
Ò For a lovely Mediterranean setting with great food, I love wine Wednesday at Catalan in Rancho Mirage. Order the Pomegranate Basil Martini and you’ll be hooked! catalanrestaurant.com
Ò It’s Twilight Thursday at the spa at Two Bunch Palms and communal night at its restaurant Essense. So after work I soak and relax in the lithium-infused 600-yearold waters and have a great meal at the bar with their great selection of tapas. Ò Saturday mornings I visit the Palm Springs Farmers Market to get my favorite green shake then play tennis at the Palm Springs Tennis Club. Cap it off with lunch at Spencer’s. Then if the weather is great, we hike up the Museum Trail, Tahquitz Canyon or Indian Canyon depending on our mood and then have a real date night meal at either Workshop Kitchen or Eight4Nine. certifiedfarmersmarket.org palmspringstennisclub.net eight4nine.com spencersrestaurant.com workshoppalmsprings.com

Ò As soon as it 5 p.m. I'm ready for the weekend! Dinner at Okura Robata Grill & Sushi Bar. I mean, really, who doesn’t love sushi but who doesn’t love sushi on a Friday night? Besides an awesome happy hour menu that starts at 4:30 p.m., they have an allyou-can-eat menu that includes some of the most amazing sushi rolls ever. Try the Marilyn Monroe or The Madonna roll…. then wash it down with a Lychee Martini.

Ò I'm a horrible golfer, but I do a darn good job pretending I know what I'm doing. SilverRock Resort literally allows you to golf right up against the Santa Rosa Mountains and it allows to me to have my “woosahhh” moment…where I pretend I'm as great as Annika Sörenstam.

Ò Thursday movie nights are a nice way to get ready for the weekend! Pearls of Wisdom from Greater Palm Springs’ Culinary Creatives
WRITTEN BY: LAUREN VILLA PHOTOGRAPHED BY: ARTURO GONZALEZ
R AY R O D R I G U E Z Owner, Cork Tree California Cuisine and Las Casuelas Terraza Q: What makes a great chef? Ray Rodriguez: My family co-owns the restaurant with the Delgado family. I think the Delgado and the Rodriguez family have successfully matched upscale dining with a resort feeling. We maintain a high emphasis on quality, presentation, service and ambiance but we do it in a relaxed and easygoing atmosphere. People come into the restaurant from all different activities—maybe it’s a night at the theatre, or maybe it’s an afternoon off the golf course—either way, we make everyone feel comfortable while still offering an upscale dining experience.

PAT R I C K S E R V I C E Operations, Cork Tree California Cuisine and Las Casuelas Terraza Q: What makes a great restaurant owner? Patrick Service: You need to find the right balance in dialogue with your customers, you have to have something interesting to say that grabs their attention. You have to find out what it is that they want and you have to do it with your own voice, your own style and impart what makes you unique, what your voice is and a voice that people want to listen to in terms of the menu, the décor, the ambiance and you have to be able to translate that through your staff.
S C OT T W I N A N T Food and Beverage Director at Vue Grille + Bar
JOHN TRUDEAU Managing Director, Two Bunch Palms Spa Resort
Q: What makes a great drink? Scott Winant: I think what makes a great drink is similar to what makes a great dish. It’s something the person making the cocktail has really put their heart into, something that has passion behind it.
Q: What makes a great chef? John Trudeau: The best chefs practice the basics of cooking over and over again. They have mastered them. It’s just like any sport, you have to practice the basics consistently. So it’s practice … and reading and researching all the time to improve your technique.
K E L LY M C FA L L Owner, Wilma and Frieda’s Cafe
W I L L I E R H I N E & J O H N PA S C H A L Owners, Eight4Nine
Q: What is your signature that differentiates you from everyone else? Kelly McFall: We have a farm to table freshness about us that makes everything different. Even if it’s bacon and eggs, the type of quality of product that we use makes a difference. We make our own English muffins from scratch and our biscuits and jams are all done in-house. So, if you’ve got an eggs Benedict you’re gonna get something you’ve never had before with a homemade English muffin.
Q: What makes a great restaurant owner? Willie Rhine: Hands-on experience. I have been in the restaurant business for almost 20 years, [working] all the way from server to general manager and, now, owner. I think Eight4Nine is about the dining experience. It’s more than just good food or good service or good ambiance—it is about everything coming together to create an unforgettable dining experience.

What Does The FOX Say? Fox and Fiddle: Rancho Mirage’s New British-Style Pub WRITTEN BY: SARA HYLAND Fox and Fiddle is keeping up the oldest of traditions. Through emulating the centuries-old British-style pub, the longest running of any eating, drinking and entertainment experience of the Western hemisphere, as well as remaining at the forefront of popular trends, this establishment cannot be beat in terms of hybridity. No longer simply a gastropub found throughout Canada, Fox and Fiddle is making its way to the Coachella Valley. Pioneered by President, CEO and Fox and Fiddle fan Kurt Gardner, this venue is in safe hands as they undergo an evolution. As a resident of Rancho Mirage, Gardner will personally develop and lead the business to success. While many restaurants like Fox and Fiddle tend to be chain locations and fall short when it comes to the enthusiasm that an owner operated location provides, this one promises an exceptional dining experience. Nestled in the former Sam’s Sushi location at The River at Rancho Mirage, the space is a perfect fit for any business wanting to station

He is indisputably one of the first celebrity chefs working today and is largely responsible for the acceptance of California as more than a state full of movie stars and beaches but a legitimate cuisine. He defined California cuisine as we know it today: a fusion of Asian, Mexican, blended with French and Italian styles but made with fresh, local ingredients. So, how did a chef from Austria come to define cuisine on the West Coast of the United States? The story is one of a boy who found his calling early in life and never looked back.

Wolfgang’s mother was a chef herself in Austria, and he often could be found cooking by her side. Due to his early interest in the kitchen, Wolfgang started training to become a chef when he was just 14. Heading to France as a young chef, he worked at a series of fine dining, Michelin-starred restaurants where he developed and honed his skills. When a friend suggested he move to the United States at age 24, he headed not to America’s culinary capitals of New York or Chicago or Las Vegas but to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1973. Two years later, leaving the cold and snow behind, Wolfgang headed west, never looked back, and became part owner of Ma Maison in West Hollywood. It was here he cultivated California cuisine and became locally known as a chef on the rise. Then came Spago, his first creation in 1982, and from there the rest is history. Immediately popular for its unique menu items including inventive pizzas with toppings such as smoked salmon and caviar, the restaurant put California cuisine on the culinary map. Spago picked up two Michelin stars and a James Beard award along the way while Wolfgang earned the James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef not once, but twice. He had arrived.
N
ow, with Wolfgang Puck restaurants scattered throughout the world, his name has become a brand unto itself. However, his life and cooking are still based in California where he can frequently be found at the Santa Monica farmers market with his kids picking up the freshest produce. When he cooks at home, he focuses now on simpler meals in contrast to his early days of his training and as a chef when he thought “If I have 25 ingredients in one dish, then I have achieved something,” Puck says. These days, he looks for dishes that are far less complicated in preparation but allow the principle ingredients to be the star. And when the dishes are served at home, he likes to serve everything family style so everyone can taste a little bit of everything. In this way, it brings everyone to the table and if it were up to him, “every restaurant would be this way.” This approach is felt in the newly renovated and renamed, WP Kitchen + Bar in Palm Desert (previously Wolfgang Puck Pizza Bar). It’s more upscale now but still casual with seasonal menus based on what’s fresh and dishes that feature the main ingredient. In this way, it's reflective of the way that Wolfgang cooks at home. Plus, there are a lot of small plates for sharing so you can try many different dishes if you’d like. The style of the food is true Californian with inspirations of Mediterranean cuisine, and some include a bit of the spice indicative of the Mexican influence. This mix of cuisines is on full display with dishes like Crispy Calamari served with spicy marinara or a Fennel Sausage Pizza with ricotta and caramelized onions. The bar has also received praise for its selection of tequilas and mezcals
that complement some of the spicier dishes. Also, they have a housemade sangria that you can enjoy while sitting and relaxing on the outdoor patio. So, whether you come for an after-work drink, work lunch or leisurely dinner, there is surely something for everyone in your group to enjoy. And the food will change with the seasons. Winter months will see heartier soups and stews and more grilled meats. But what exactly will be on the menu is yet to be determined. Part of the reason for the success of Wolfgang’s restaurants is that he allows the individual head chefs at each location to bring their creativity and ideas to the table because after all, he can’t be cooking at all his restaurants every day. So, he supplies to the format and the vision but allows each chef to experiment and try something new, to let their own talents shine through. In this way, WP Kitchen + Bar differentiates itself from chain restaurants where the recipes are coming from headquarters, and there are line cooks who are churning out the same dishes day after day. This is a restaurant unto itself with a head chef who takes Wolfgang’s vision and translates it into dishes based on the season, the available ingredients, and direction of the menu. This is why so many people who have come to work for Wolfgang Puck stay for years—they are not soldiers in Wolfgang’s army but creative individuals who are given the tools to create. The WP Kitchen + Bar chef may make something not on the menu at any other Wolfgang Puck outlet, but if it passes muster with the kitchen and waitstaff, it may end up being a favorite local dish. Because of this, when you visit WP Kitchen + Bar in Palm Desert, you may be able to order one of Wolfgang’s signature dishes, but you can try a dish truly available nowhere else.

Native Knowledge Wolfgang eats at his own restaurants frequently. Recently, while in the Cancun airport, he waited 20 minutes in line at one of his newer concepts, The Kitchen Counter, for a pizza. Unrecognized by the employees working there, upon ordering (and paying), he was told it would be another 15 minutes for his pizza to be prepared. He just wanted to see if all this time and waiting was worth it—and it was. The pizza was nicely cooked and had good spice (he even snapped a picture of it).

Communal Style Dinners Bring Conversation to the Table WRITTEN BY: NICK CIMARUSTI
Ú
If you walk through Sparrows Lodge’s pleasantly meandering central courtyard and pass under the open-air barn archway, you’ll encounter a dinner experience unlike any other in Palm Springs. Since November 2015, Sparrows Lodge has been hosting communal-style garden dinners from Chef Gabriel Woo’s Barn Kitchen. Under the cover of blossoming orange trees and lanterns, guests and nonguests alike enjoy Chef Woo’s rotating seasonal menu. Fresh herbs and vegetables from the Sparrows’ garden are used along with other locally sourced ingredients. Wednesdays always feature a chicken dish while Saturdays are for steak, with lunch served every day. The fare sticks to the basics of a hearty

meal—meat, vegetables, starch and, of course, dessert—plus every communal supper is kicked off with a surprised amuse bouche from Chef Woo. He says his favorite part of Sparrow Lodge’s communal dining is talking to guests at the end of dinner. Chef Woo’s background in catering inspired him to create a low-key, relaxed dining expiring that brings people together. Seated around two tables in the secluded outdoor garden, a maximum of 24 guests enjoy the desert’s most intimate al fresco dining experience. A champagne toast at dusk begins the meal and from there guests share stories, food and even numbers as friendships are formed and dinner is served.

REBEL WITH A CAUSE: The cocktail list pays homage to the rebel spirit of the restaurant’s beginnings with classic libations and a sense of humor.
Q: TELL US ABOUT YOUR HISTORY AS A BARTENDER. HOW HAS PURPLE PALM CHANGED SINCE YOU’VE BEEN HERE? Brandon Infusino: I’ve been a bartender for eight years, and five of those have been here. I started as a bar-back at the Renaissance Esmeralda [now the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort & Spa] and the bartender there sort of took me under his wing, but my girlfriend was who really motivated me to become a bartender. She knew the former sous chef here and everything worked out. When I got here, the menu was all basic resort drinks, and now I’d like to think it’s more interesting and crafty, which makes it more special for guests. 40 | LOCALE MAGAZINE
Q
TOP FIVE LIBATIONS TO ORDER: RIO RITA: Tequila, blood orange puree, lime juice, ghost pepper MOJAVE MULE: Vodka, lime juice, bitters, peach and ginger beer COVERED WAGON: Bourbon, Gentiane lemon, ginger beer THE PURPLE GANG: Vodka, muddled grapes, lemon, pinot noir float APEROL ON FIRE: Aperol, gin, lemon juice, singed orange
NATIVE KNOWLEDGE: Opened in 1936, the Colony Palms Hotel was originally owned by alleged mobster Al Wertheimer. He even established a basement casino and speakeasy in the hotel.
“WHEN I GOT HERE, THE MENU WAS ALL BASIC RESORT DRINKS, AND NOW I’D LIKE TO THINK IT’S MORE INTERESTING AND CRAFTY, WHICH MAKES IT MORE SPECIAL FOR GUESTS.” —BRANDON INFUSINO
Where do you draw your inspiration from to make your libations? BI: I can draw inspiration from my surroundings or taking the time to be creative in my downtime. I can also be inspired by my clientele. They’re not stupid, so I trust their judgment. Every season, I like to change it up for them. In summer we provide drinks conducive to lounging by the pool, so there’s a lot of sparkling drinks. In fall, we have drinks like the Gangster Groove, which has allspice dram and ginger beer in it—which are very seasonal flavors. Q: What are some of your favorite ingredients to work with? BI: Gin, because it’s a versatile mixing spirit. I personally like Nolet’s gin because it has predominant flavors like Turkish rose and white peach. I also like working with rosemary and thyme, fresh juices. Q: You use a lot of accessories and tools in your libations. Are those essential? BI: They need to have a purpose. When I use those, they’re not for “ooh’s and ahhs.” None of it is meant to be gimmicky—when I light something on fire with a blowtorch, it’s to bring out flavors. Q: There’s a libation on the menu called Brandon’s Famous Sangria. What makes your sangria different from others? BI: It’s not as sweet as most sangrias. There’s a tartness that comes from pomegranate juice, and spice that comes from fresh cinnamon sticks. I also make a white sangria in the summer with a white peach puree. Q: Can you give us your top three tips for making the best libations? BI: One, avoid store-bought sweet and sour— always use fresh-squeezed juice. Two, use agave nectars and simple syrups. And three, try to incorporate purees and fresh herbs from your garden if you can. Be creative. Q: What is the biggest mistake people make when mixing libations? BI: I would say most people tend to build all the ingredients in a glass. Mix your ingredients in a shaker tin and then pour it over ice.

What separates Panache Optical Gallery from the rest of the optical industry is the quality. For nearly four years now, owners Steven Niezgoda and Arthur Douville have been delivering handmade, limited edition and custom made-to-order superior products that never cease to disappoint. The Palm Springs location opened in January of 2015, boasting an inventory of over 3,000 eyeglasses and sunglasses. It’s safe to say they found their place in the eyewear business and aren’t planning on turning back anytime soon. But how did they get here? Before opening their first location, Steven and Art noticed styles and brands in eyewear were becoming far from unique and the quality was falling short at an alarming rate. Color options left too much to be desired and frames were becoming more and more of the same. Art, an optical industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience under his belt, had inside knowledge of the big wigs’ disinterest of breaking from the status quo. He knew customers wanted more choices for their eyewear fashion, and that they deserved more than what was being offered to them. Thus, Panache was born.
High Index lenses to the newest gradient polarized lenses. However, they are by no means a doctor’s office. Panache is an eyewear fashion house. For sunglasses, say goodbye to the typical black shades and choose from grey, yellow/orange, green, amber/brown, and even rose/red. Panache is also proud to offer custom eyewear crafted from genuine buffalo horn, making a natural lightweight frame with a marbled color and texture. Stainless steel, wood, titanium, and nylon are also available.

DISPOSITION Trina Turk’s Bright and Bold Designs Are the Epitome of Palm Springs Fashion
WRITTEN BY: MOLLY BROOKS
THE EXPER T
TRINA TURK Founder of Trina Turk
Savvy Seamstress: Started sewing at 11 years old
Bright, bold and anything but boring, Trina Turk is the epitome of Palm Springs style. Locals love to beat the desert heat in Turk’s effortlessly chic styles and make an impression with her handdesigned prints and patterns. Starting the Trina Turk empire out of her house, Turk has grown the brand immensely in the last 20 years. The woman behind it all talks about her experiences in fashion, what draws her to the California desert and much more.

What inspired you to join the fashion world? Trina Turk: My mom taught me to sew when I was 11 years old
and I just thought it was a lot of
fun. After that, I heard you could be a fashion designer and knew
that’s what I wanted to be. I didn’t really know what it meant to be
in fashion, but I thought it was so
cool that you didn’t have to follow patterns and that there was so much customization involved.

Q: Working in the industry before branching off on your own, what were you aiming to achieve when starting your own line and company? TT: I studied apparel design in college and my first job was working with Brittania Jeans in Seattle. It was a really large company and I started as an assistant designer. After that, I worked at OP down here in California and that’s really where I learned the great use of patterns and textiles. It was where I learned to work with print. I decided to go out on my own because I wanted to design something that I wanted to wear. During those previous opportunities, I spent a lot of time in low-priced junior apparel, but that wasn’t what I was interested in. I just wanted to be my own boss, and see what it would be like to work for myself. Q: How would you describe your personal style? TT: My style is a mix of vintage and Trina Turk. I’m also very into a menswear vibe. I like to mix things together. If I had to describe it in a concise way I would say that my style is fairly simple with touches of textile use and a menswear influence. Q: How does Palm Springs influence your designs? TT: I grew up in California until I moved to Seattle with my parents when I was young. Then in the ’80s I couldn’t stay away and moved back. California is so unique, between its climate and landscape, there is so much variation. California has endless inspiration. As for Palm Springs, I have this Slim Aarons photograph of these women sipping cocktails by the pool and they just seem so glamorous. To me that represents Palm Springs so well, and I just want to recreate that glamour that existed in the Palm Springs heyday. Q: Where do you draw inspiration for your designs in general? TT: Being on the West Coast is so different from the East Coast. We are outside of the New York fashion mecca and things are a lot less traditional. I draw inspiration from this area in general. It lets you wear whatever you want, like the bright prints and vibrant colors we are identified by. There is a lot of optimism represented in my designs, as well. We do dark colors and we have black pants, but in general our lines are sunny and optimistic just like the Golden State. Q: Why did you choose to open your first retail store in Palm Springs? TT: My husband and I had been going to Palm Springs a lot, and we were looking for a house to buy — which we eventually did in 1998. Most of the wealth had moved south to Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert and people had left Palm Springs behind. But a bunch of creative types were moving in, from up north like Portland and Seattle, and there was excitement building up around the area again. So, when we all moved down there, there was no place to shop. If you forgot an outfit, you either had to go thrifting, which wasn’t that bad then, or drive to Palm Desert. I had that Slim Aarons picture in my head and thought of the style of old Palm Springs and what it could be again. I told my husband that if we found a space we liked, then we should open a store. We then came across this modern furniture store, and I just loved the space and it worked out that their lease ended in September 2001 and we opened up shop that spring of 2002. It’s now our biggest store and has the largest selection from our Mr. Turk line, as well. Q: Why do you think you’ve been such an influence in fashion in Palm Springs? TT: When we first opened up, there was nothing out there. It was a no man’s land. If people were in the area, our store was their destination, it wasn’t like they were just walking by. Soon after though, we sparked a revitalization of the area, and neighborhoods began filling in around us. That wasn’t on purpose, we had no idea that was “I just wanted going to happen. The neighborhood is now to be my own vibrant, though, and is a fun place for people boss, and see what it would to walk around and shop. I do think we helped be like to work give an identity to Palm Springs fashion. When for myself.” you go to the desert, you have to wear color and bright prints. It feels funny to wear black —Trina Turk

in Palm Springs. Trina Turk gives a nod to vintage resort wear, as well, and we helped men embrace color and print with our Mr. Turk line. Q: How do you think the Trina Turk brand has evolved in the last 20 years? TT: Well, we are a much bigger company. I started the line working out of my house and now we have 150 employees and 10 retail stores. That is big, because we used to be solely a wholesaler, which we still are in a large part, but now we have our own stores on top of that. Honestly, stylistically we haven’t changed much, we’ve stuck to our brand’s identity and if I brought back an old collection, it wouldn’t be out of place. Our designs have become much more detailed, but we have maintained that effortless style. We have always made simple silhouettes that let the patterns, prints and textiles speak for themselves. Q: You’ve expanded into so many sectors of the industry. Do you have a favorite line to work on? TT: I enjoy the styling, but for me the most interesting and enjoyable part to work on is the fabrication. We develop all of our own prints, weaves and color combinations. We make our own versions of fabrics, to our specifications and liking. I also love figuring out which print works best for which category. Some of the prints we produce work better on a smaller scale like a bikini, while others could work on a large scale and could be used on a home furnishing piece.
60
Q: What are your favorite things to do when you’re not working in fashion? TT: I love architecture and interior design. We go on architecture tours all the time, in both Palm Springs and Los Angeles. I love looking at midcentury modern homes. I also love to shop vintage fashion and furniture. Being in fashion, I’m really involved in the art world, too, because those interests are so similar. Q: You’ve traveled around the world, so where is your favorite place you’ve been? TT: Bali was amazing. Morocco was amazing. Italy was amazing. My mom is Japanese, so the whole family went to Japan during the Cherry Blossom Festival, which was a really cool experience. I really enjoy traveling and I think it is one of the most inspiring things. There really isn't a place I’ve been that I haven’t liked. You just have to have an open mind. Q: Do you have favorite places in your home state? TT: I love Los Angeles because it’s my hometown, but I grew up in San Jose. So, San Francisco was the first big city I had ever been to as a kid. Visiting there when I was younger was like I had died and gone to heaven. It’s really just a special city and I didn’t realize that when I was a kid. Not all cities have cable cars, bridges and big zoos! That city will always have a special place in my heart.

365 DAYS TO LIVE WELL Dr. Nicole Ortiz Fills Us in On Natural Aging Solutions WRITTEN BY: ALANA ARONSON
Dr. Nicole Ortiz Naturopathic Primary Care Doctor, Co-Founder of Live Well Clinic Tis the season for savory treats and decadent sweets! One of the “sideeffects” of a joyous holiday season can be a decrease in physical activity, and a lack of attention to what we are intentionally putting into our bodies. Fear not, because Dr. Nicole Ortiz of Live Well Clinic is offering up some tried and true solutions to recover from the indulgent holiday festivities we all partake in! Q: What are Live Well Clinic's most popular services in the fall and winter? Dr. Nicole Ortiz: There is no season in health optimization. We work with patients year round to support a life program that focuses on energy, hormone balance, sexual health, nutrition, and brain function. As a group however we offer our 21-day cleanse program, which has grown quite a following. This group cleanse is done each year in the desert once before “season” and once after the holidays. It entails 21 days of self love, packed with fresh healthy food, and void of alcohol or coffee. It is the perfect program for general detoxification, shedding the holiday pounds, ditching the sugar addictions, and reintroducing healthy practices into a daily routine. One of the best aspects of this cleanse is the community support. We meet weekly as a group and join together to share experiences, track progress, and encourage one another. When you sign up for the cleanse, you receive a book I specifically wrote
to guide you through the process. It contains a shopping list, recipes, helpful tips, and explanations behind each step and restriction. Q: What is your advice for maintaining healthy skin all year long? NO: Skin health must be addressed from the inside and the outside. This includes diet, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory foods and healthy fats (lots of them). A natural skin topical treatment with key ingredients for your skin type is necessary and should be started by your teen years. The more natural you go, the less chance of skin cancers or skin reactions to chemicals or fillers. I use regenerative facials personally and give them to all of my patients wanting a natural skin regeneration. I also love to utilize stem cells and ozone in my treatments when the patient is open to a completely natural facelift or skin resurfacing. Q: What do you recommend for recovering from the sweets and stress of the holidays? NO: A 21-day cleanse because it takes the temptation out of your life. When you participate in the cleanse you are completely free of sugar. Studies prove it takes 21 days to break a habit and sugar is one of the most addictive substances. Q: Do you offer any holiday gift packages? NO: We customize gifts including services and supplements for a unique gift of health to any special someone. If you follow our Facebook or newsletters we have featured specials and complimentary lectures every month.
One of Live Well Clinic’s most popular services is their IV nutrient therapy, which replenishes nutrients to the body.

ADVENTURE T W O D U D E S SHOW US A WHOLE NEW SIDE OF GREATER PALM SPRINGS
WRITTEN BY: MOLLY BROOKS PHOTOGRAPHED BY: TAYLOR LEWIS
What comes to mind when you think of Palm Springs? Well, when envisioning Palm Springs, most think of resorts, pools, spas and golf, lots and lots of golf. Little do people know, though, that there is actually a lot of adventure to be found in California’s desert destination. That’s at least what Stephen Snavely and Sam Schneider are trying to tell you in their Two Dudes video series for Greater Palm Springs.

Two Dudes is a series of five videos, which mostly star Schneider doing a bunch of shenanigans around the Greater Palm Springs Area. There are brief appearances by Snavely, but his presence is most known behind the camera. These two dudes make what many think is a retirement community look fun, adventurous and edgy—exactly as it is. Their quirky video series showcases the eclectic adventures to be had in Palm Springs and will have you heading east on the I-10 for your next vacation.
he project came to life when the area’s Convention and Visitors Bureau approached Snavely about creating a production to show a different side of Palm Springs. Snavely has done work for the bureau before, but this project was a lot different. The Greater Palm Springs CVB wanted a series of videos to promote the plentitude of outdoor adventure in the area. Knowing Snavely’s work style, he was a good fit and was essentially given free reign of the project. When he received the project, right away Snavely thought Schneider would be a perfect partner in the endeavor. His outgoing personality and gift of gab made him a natural fit in front of the camera. Snavely and Schneider met about five years ago and have always wanted to collaborate on a project. The pair are good friends, but couldn’t make their schedules align to work together.
the way. Schneider found that the people they would come across would generally want to help and tell them about something they should check out. Word of mouth was the best way to find these unique shooting locations. The Two Dudes were on a mission to prove the preconceptions of Palm Springs wrong, and they said there was very little pre-production done before filming. The videos they created represent a very carefree way of doing Palm Springs, so they had to be a bit spontaneous. Snavely and Schneider have tried everything from partying their way through the Coachella Valley to camping out in Joshua Tree National Park. Each video they shot had a theme and you can watch them doing things like racing BMWs, climbing cliff faces and tasting specialty brews. The two-minute videos are very authentic and not scripted at all. They are targeting millennials as their audience, but the edgy, no B.S. way they go through Palm Springs is really appealing to anyone.
Both of these guys run their own production companies out of Los Angeles. Snavely, originally from Texas, is the founder of Snavely Media and Schneider, from Florida, is the founder of Bad Beards.
Snavely says his favorite part of this project was the people he met. The individuals they came across were phenomenal. He said it’s those people, living out there, who create these awesome opportunities and really cultivate a unique culture out in the desert.
Together, Snavely and Schneider treated this new project like a true adventure. Even though neither are from Palm Springs, they knew there was more to the destination than just golf courses and spas. So they took off with GoPros and DSLRs in hand, shot each video in less than a week’s time, and found their inspiration along
If you’re looking for ideas for your next adventure, make sure to check out what the Two Dudes are up to on YouTube. The series is sure to inspire some fun, whatever that means to you. They prove that Greater Palm Springs is definitely a place where there is something to do for everyone.

THE VIDEOS THEY CREATED REPRESENT A VERY CAREFREE WAY OF DOING PALM SPRINGS, SO THEY HAD TO BE A BIT SPONTANEOUS.

PURE GENIUS PURE BARRE Palm Desert’s Leading Lady
WRITTEN BY: ALANA ARONSON PHOTOGRAPHED BY: TRAVIS MCCOY
THE EXPER T
KYLIE KOLZ Manager, Pure Barre Palm Desert
Highlight Outside of Fitness: Her Bachelor’s in Journalism
Pure Barre has established itself across California, and the nation, as a brand with consistency, integrity and never ending motivation to its students. The success of Pure Barre has much to do with the leaders within the brand itself. Kylie Kolz, manager at Pure Barre Palm Desert’s background in athletics and her dedication to her family and students are just some of the factors that contribute to the studio—and brand’s— success. Kylie’s successes in academia, athletics and as a motivator in her community truly shine through her practice and teaching of Pure Barre. We found out just what inspires, drives and excites her—and what is on the horizon for Pure Barre.
79
Q: ATHLETICS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PART OF YOUR LIFE, FROM DANCE TO HOCKEY. HOW DOES THE PRACTICE OF BARRE COMPARE TO THE OTHER SPORTS YOU HAVE ENJOYED IN YOUR LIFE? Kylie Kolz: Barre is obviously most similar to my dance, gymnastics and cheerleading experiences— there’s a lot of musicality, flexibility and body weight conditioning involved with each sport, and these are also the basis and essence of Pure Barre. However, what I loved about being an athlete and competing in tournaments is the overall competitiveness and sportsmanship that being apart of a team or competition entailed. With barre, you “compete” against yourself—which is a very different mindset, but can be equally as challenging. Whether you are an athlete competing for the championship or a regular barre-goer, you have to bring your best self day in and day out to make changes and attain the best version of yourself.
80
IT’S IMPORTANT TO KEEP CHANGING AND EVOLVING AS A PERSON, AS A TEACHER, AS A MANAGER AND AS A STUDIO.” —KYLIE KOLZ
BARRE: DEFINED Pure Barre offers a full-body workout that lifts your seat, tones your thighs, abs and arms and burns fat in record-breaking time. Their method focuses on small, isometric movements, which creates a high intensity, low impact workout that delivers fast results. Each 55 minute class works every muscle group to fatigue, then stretches them back out to create long, lean physiques without bulk. Instructors are trained to get clients into the correct setups and form to maximize their work. There are modifications for every aspect of class, you just have to ask! This is why Pure Barre is for any and every body. SOME REMARKABLE RESULTS Increased strength Better flexibility Improved posture Increase in selfconfidence
Q: Tell us a little about the philosophy of Pure Barre. KK: Pure Barre is more than a workout—it’s a lifestyle. All of the studios across the nation (and a few in Canada!), foster a strong sense of community, welcoming clients of all sizes and fitness backgrounds to empower one another in achieving one another’s fitness goals. As long as you can hold on to the ballet barre, you can do Pure Barre! Q: Who is the ideal barre student? KK: The ideal barre student is someone who is looking for something new and different to add to their workout repertoire or even those who just want to begin a workout routine for the first time. Pure Barre is also great for those who are limited as far as mobility, injuries or individuals who are new to working out. Q: Where do you draw your inspiration from, and how does that inspiration translate into your role as a Manager at Pure Barre Palm Desert? KK: Every day is a fresh start, and you’re not promised tomorrow. Both of these truths are daily motivation and inspiration for me. It’s important to keep changing and evolving as a person, as a teacher, as a manager and as a studio. Luckily, there are so many opportunities to grow in the Pure Barre community/corporate structure, which is very inspiring and a big motivator for me. I draw most of my inspiration from my teachers and clients though, hands down. We have a few clients in our Palm Desert studio whom travel to Haiti and Uganda to better those communities, families and children. And I get to be a small part of their day, motivating them and encouraging them to push themselves for one more hour to be even better than when they walked in the door. The least I can do is give them 100 percent of my time, dedication and personal attention to help them reach their fitness goals. Q: What is your proudest moment inside the fitness industry? KK: I have my proudest moments every day in
the fitness industry. Watching and being apart of the workings of Pure Barre Palm Desert is so rewarding. To know that I’ve not only taught and influenced my staff and teachers, but also that they’re passing on their love and knowledge of the technique to our clients makes me so happy! Q: Who are your role models? KK: My family. Without question or hesitation. My dad is an extremely hard worker, always leading by example, and has shown my brother and I that working hard and being passionate about what you do will always take you as far as you want to go. My brother shares this same passion towards the things that are important to him in his life. My mom is beautiful—inside and outside. She is thoughtful, creative, caring and always putting everyone before herself, which has always translated into being involved in the community. My parents have also taught my brother and I the importance of having morals and values.
WHETHER YOU ARE AN ATHLETE COMPETING FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP OR A REGULAR BARRE-GOER, YOU HAVE TO BRING YOUR BEST SELF DAY IN AND DAY OUT TO MAKE CHANGES AND ATTAIN THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF.” —KYLIE KOLZ
Q: If you could bring Pure Barre to any country or city in the world, where would it be? KK: I’d love to bring Pure Barre to Steamboat, Colorado. I absolutely love it there—the seasons, the mountains, the healthy lifestyle, the food, etc. I think a location in Steamboat, would not only do well, but thrive. Q: What is next for Pure Barre Palm Desert? KK: Pure Barre Palm Desert has only just begun. We’ve been open since March and we’ve already accomplished a lot. Our teachers will continue to develop, grow and expand their knowledge, understanding of the Pure Barre brand and technique. We hope to bring the new platform, cardio barre class into the mix soon too! We hope to continue improving and expanding our involvement in the community, motivating our clients to be the best they can be, and bringing in new clients from all walks of life to try the largest and fastest growing barre franchise in the nation! Pure Barre is just picking up steam, and the sky's the limit!

MAKE YOU CRAYOLA’S FAVORITE • Herb orders each color crayon individually packed (3,000 to a case) to complete his sculptures.
Herb Williams’ Crayon Sculptures WRITTEN BY: TAMARA PHILIPS
The colorful world of artist Herb Williams hasn’t always been so bright. The iconic crayon sculptures that Herb creates have been a sweet end to a creative journey that began with frustration, and almost ended before it even began. Herb initially began his work with any form of materials he could get his hands on, but in a small town in Alabama, and later as a college student in Florida, his resources were limited. “Everything I would make I just saw somebody else’s voice in it,” Herb says in the mini documentary, The Call of the Wild. “I couldn’t sleep; I just couldn’t rest until I found something that felt like my own.” It wasn’t until he threw in the towel, giving up on art, that he had a creative epiphany within a dream that led him to crayons as his medium. Once he began sketching his soon-to-be crayon masterpieces, the rest is history. With his art, Herb has learned he likes to identify iconic objects that society perceives to fit one role and then reintroducing them in different subtexts. “I can have a fun, happy medium, but still energetic,” Herb says. “It’s kind of my misleading hook— where you think it’s all going
to be bright and happy fun stuff, but it could have some darker meaning.” For example, he has used his pieces to address issues dealing with more adult matters, such as sexuality, religion and social hierarchy. To convey these messages, he needs a ton of crayons—like thousands of each color for one sculpture. Herb is one of the only individual wholesalers of Crayola crayons in the world. His work even holds records with Ripley’s and Guinness and has been placed in public spots like children’s hospitals, corporate lobbies, museum walls, and wait for it...The White House. We’ll put President Obama down as a fan! And here in the Coachella Valley, Herb had two of his crayon dog sculptures (Burberry Bulldog and German Shepard) on display at Raymond Lawrence at The River in Rancho Mirage, but the dogs were recently moved to LA. Check back to see when Herb will grace the store with more of his pieces.

I arrived early in the morning at the Joshua Tree National Park Oasis Visitor Center as the sun began beating down on the desert. A practically perfect morning in the summer left the park nearly empty and peaceful. Community Outreach Ranger George Land welcomed me with excitement and an enamel pin with a drawing of a Bighorn Sheep, and ‘Joshua Tree National Park’ written on it. I quickly put the pin on with pride as we hopped in our car and made our way into the park. George warmed us up with some jokes and briefed me on some facts about the nearly 800,000 square acres we were about to get a glimpse of. If you tend to think of the desert as a wasteland, Joshua Tree will shatter your notions. Life is abundant here, as the plants and animals have adapted to the heat. Over 750 plants, 60 species of mammals, 25 species of snakes, and 250 species of birds live within the park. Joshua Tree has a special ecology that brings two ecosystems together. The eastern half of the park, is the Colorado Desert, which is part of the Sonoran Desert. The western half of the park is the Mojave Desert. With a tip of the hat like a badass cowboy from George to a fellow ranger in the entrance booth, we entered the park. As we turned a corner in the park, it was easy to see where the Colorado Desert ends and the Mojave begins. Joshua trees and yuccas, a cornerstone of the Mojave, suddenly surrounded us from every angle. I was beginning to feel the magic. 90 | LOCALE MAGAZINE
About a 10-minute drive from the booth and we were at our first stop, Keys View. I got out of the car, and a cool breeze hit me. George commented on the chill, and said it is often cooler than Palm Springs in the park by about 20 degrees. We walked up a small paved path to a panoramic view of the entire Coachella Valley and some faraway mountains in the distance. The smog was rolling in, but a small bit of Signal Peak across the Mexican Border peaked through. After taking some time to admire the view, we jumped back in the car and headed down to Cap Rock a short ways down the road. A rock perched like a small hat on top of a rock formation gave it it’s name, but Cap Rock is known primarily for its connection to the death of country musician Gram Parsons. Parsons was known to drive out to Cap Rock to get high and commune with nature. He made it known that if he died, he wanted to be cremated and have his ashes scattered in the park. When Parsons died of a drug overdose in 1973, his body was to be shipped to New Orleans for a funeral. Awaiting transport at LAX, two of his friends drunkenly stole his corps in a run down hearse posing as workers of a mortuary, and high tailed it from LAX to Joshua Tree. They drove to Cap Rock, unloaded the coffin, dosed it with gasoline and set it on fire—illegally cremating him. A short loop trail leads back to a shaded area behind Cap Rock where a pilgrimage of musicians and

Native Knowledge: Many people call Joshua Tree the “Seussian Forest” because they think that The Truffula trees, featured in his book The Lorax, are inspired by them.
Native Knowledge: You will notice small openings in curbs along the road. This is for desert tortoises so they don’t try to get over the curb and flip over and get stuck in the road.
Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses are a must to protect yourself from the hot desert sun
Water is only available at a few locations around the edges of the park and there are no convenience stores in the park so be sure to bring enough of both for your stay. If you are hiking, be sure to bring enough water for the length of your hike.
This is remote wilderness, there is no cell coverage in the park, so do not count on your phone for navigating or in case of emergency. Pick up some maps in one of the visitors centers.
fans go to pay their respects. A cross of pennies, some dying flowers, and a rock shaped like a coffin with the words “I remember every word you said, your voice still rings inside my head. RIP Graham Parsons,” sat as small tokens left as a makeshift memorial lay in the place that is thought to be the burning site. It’s very unlikely that two drunk men dragged a heavy coffin all the way over to where we stood no where near the road. The actual burning site is near a stop sign just in front of Cap Rock— but it’s a perfect spot for a story where a rock n’ roll legend has become folklore. There is a lot of the park that we couldn’t see on our three hour tour. I would suggest going for at least the weekend if you want to experience the whole thing. But if you are looking to do a day trip, there is a lot to see along Park Boulevard, which is the main road we followed. October through May is the best time to explore because summer temperatures can reach up to 110 degrees, but international visitors flood the park the whole year. If you plan to camp, most of their eight campgrounds are first come first serve, so arrive after Thursday and it is likely you won’t find a spot. Two of their campgrounds can be reserved ahead of time through Reserve America’s website. If you aren’t a camper, Airbnb is a great alternative to stay near by. Our last stop before leaving the park was Skull Rock, which resembles a melted Frosty the Snowman skull,
created over time by erosion. It’s a fitting omen for the most important thing I learned while in Joshua Tree: It is essential to come prepared, as people have died in the park from preventable accidents. George reminded me that when you get here “you make an agreement with nature to use common sense and good judgement.” Joshua Tree is a wilderness park, meaning there are no facilities like gas stations or convenience stores in the park. A map—which you can get at the visitor center—plenty of water, as well as food and sun protection are necessary for any amount of time spent in the park. Whatever you plan to do here, you have to come prepared whether it’s hiking, camping, or climbing, otherwise you are essentially risking your life. Our tour ended as the park began to fill with families and girls taking artsy Instagram photos with their phones. We headed back to the visitor center to drop off our new friend George and said our goodbyes while I picked up a souvenir patch in the gift shop. Driving away, I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get to see the Bighorn Sheep from my new pin, but as I was mesmerized by the wild-armed Joshua trees and their bright green leaves against the blue sky, the car came to a screeching halt. A cartoonish fire-engine-red snake slithered across the road as I caught my breath from the sudden stop. It was undeniable that this place was visually magical.
There are rattlesnakes, venomous scorpions, and spiders in the area. Avoid getting bitten or stung by paying attention to your surroundings!
Though pets are allowed on a leash no more than 100ft off the road or camping, Dogs can easily get overheated and their paws can burn on the pavement, so if you can avoid bringing them, you should.

CHRIS PARDO Designer and Owner of Chris Pardo Design: Elemental Architecture
Favorite Place to Relax: Sparrows Lodge
It’s unclear if Chris Pardo sleeps at night. We’re not sure how he could possibly have the 6-8 hours of recommended rest with everything that he handles in a day. He owns several businesses, has offices in Palm Springs
and Seattle, and still manages to enjoy his favorite Tiki bar—which he also owns! Owner of Chris Pardo Design: Elemental Architecture, his work can be seen in homes and businesses across several states—including his own growing hotel brand. We sat down together to see what inspires him.
95
OUTDOOR INSPIRATION “Hiking! Amazing trails, you can get elevation really quickly and I go up the hill and look over construction projects I am working on. Tahquitz Falls is a great place to hike, relax and think.” LOOK AT ME NOW
FAVORITE WATERING HOLE “Bootlegger Tiki bar, a tiny bar that I opened in the old Don the Beachcomber building. It’s behind Ernest Coffee.”
Did you always want to go into design? Chris Pardo: When I was six years old my mom subscribed me to a couple of home and lifestyle magazines and I started drawing floor plans of homes and going to open houses—thought maybe I would be an interior designer. Well, I ended up going to school for architecture but transferred out and went into hotel management. A couple years later I ended up going back to school for architecture, which was the right fit after all.
Q
Q: Tell us about styles you like, your “aesthetic”. CP: When I do buildings, it is a modern aesthetic. Restaurants and interior design are more project dependent. The restaurants are all a little softer, or more eclectic than the modern buildings I tend to create for other homes or businesses. Q: You have offices in Seattle and Palm Springs, which came first? CP: Seattle came first; I went to University of Washington. For my thesis I built two houses and started my firm up there—but I started coming down here about three and a half years ago to work on the Arrive Hotel project. Each time I came I stayed a bit longer, and now I haven’t been back to Seattle in about three years! Q: Which do you call home? CP: Palm Springs is my home, I have an office of eight people and I hardly ever leave except for work The weather is too good here!
Chris’ dad never thought he would make money in architecture—he says his dad told him he is bad at math! Look how that turned out!
Q: Besides the sunshine, what keeps you here? CP: I came down on vacation and rented a midcentury home, I love the architecture here. The more I explored Palm Springs, I realized it is a museum of amazing architecture. I tied up the parcel to build Arrive Hotel and since then I have met so many amazing people. You walk into every coffee shop and meet people talking about design. After I did the hotel, clients started finding me here. Now I am working on projects all over the city—reinventing downtown Palm Springs. I enjoy keeping the midcentury modern look but taking it into the present. Q: What can guests look forward to when they book a stay at Arrive Hotel? CP: It is a unique hotel, I came up with the brand about seven years ago—and we opened this last February. The concept is like you’re staying in a home. You check in at the bar and we give you your favorite drink for free. If you need anything, you are connected to the staff via text. There is no front desk, no lobby—like you’re home. We really don’t overcharge. For example, the mini bar is at-cost, there are no resort fees and no parking charges. It’s easy travel. Q: What inspired this? CP: After working in hotel management in Beverly Hills and New York for five years, I understood the frustrations that guests have. I also traveled nine months out of the year working, and—for example—it would take 35 minutes or more to have
my car brought up front to leave a hotel. A series of experiences as a traveler inspired this mentality of easy travel. The frustrations led to this concept and a friend of mine and I made it a reality. Q: What is the future for Arrive Hotels? CP: I am working on a project in Downtown Los Angeles and Austin, Texas. The design language of those projects will speak to their locations. In Palm Springs, the feel is modern but midcentury. We take the design look of the region and progress it forward—make it unique to where you are. The feel of the hotel—the food, retail and more—will feature local distributors and designs. The coffee in Palm Springs features Joshua Tree coffee, the hotel in LA will feature a local roaster as well. Q: Tell us about the Coachella bathroom project. CP: The first project I did for them was 1,400 bathroom stalls—in a series of four midcentury looking buildings with a steel roof and steel stalls. It blends into the polo fields. It needed to look correct during the festival and also when there isn’t a festival and the polo field is empty. I ended up doing eleven houses for them also—which will be used to host bands and performing artists during the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals. The homes all have private pools, large outdoor overhangs and are on 20,000-square-foot lots—and they’re very energy efficient.

“We are not just a special occasion restaurant. We are a restaurant for all occasions.” —GENERAL MANAGER DAMIAN J. JENKINS
A
s the much anticipated holiday season rolls around, many of us look for opportunities to celebrate with family and friends over a great meal in a beautiful environment. When temperatures drop everywhere else, Palm Springs remains a comfortable paradise. One of the highlights of your outing this season might be The Edge Steakhouse in The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage, which offers a dazzling holiday menu to please all palates. Refined and sophisticated, the holiday-ready milieu at The Edge offers the perfect fine dining experience one looks for in a prime steakhouse, yet the friendly service contributes to a more relaxed experience than most high-end steakhouses provide. Set right on the edge of a cliff with full-length glass windows, providing unparalleled views of the San Bernardino Mountains and the Rancho Mirage area, the resort’s dining area is a favorite with Coachella Valley locals. The Edge steakhouse provides a vibrant yet romantic ambiance. Waiters are dressed in white dinner jackets with open collars, recalling the glamour of the Rat Pack era. Their modern steakhouse menu is sure to please even the most exacting foodies, and their
notable wine list, as well as their chic cocktail choices will make any night a success for all. The dining room offers a lively scene with mood-enhancing lights and music, as well as a dry-aging room and a chef’s table, both of which are conversation starters. Those wishing for more privacy can choose a table off to the side, conducive to more quiet conversations. The restaurant’s Executive Chef Bruno Lopez, who originally hails from France, has had a long career during which he’s collected many awards and honors. He is an officer of the Ordre National du Mérite Agricole, and his resume includes titles like Chef de Cuisine at several high-end restaurants in France, Southern California, Canada, and also working as the private chef for the French Consulate in Los Angeles. The menu he designed for The Edge reflects his diverse culinary background and draws inspiration from the cuisines of Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. Alongside General Manager Damian Jenkins and the dedicated team of mixologists, sommeliers, and servers, they aim to provide an unforgettable night to all of their guests.
INTERVIEW WITH EXECUTIVE CHEF BRUNO LOPEZ Q: When did you decide to become a chef? Bruno Lopez: I was 10 or 12 years old and in the Boy Scouts in France. We did a lot of weekend camping, summer camp, stuff like that, and I was kind of fed up with camp food, so one day I went to my mom and said, "You have to give me some tips on cooking." And she did. Next thing I knew, I was cooking for my troop. After high school I decided to follow my dream and went into the career of cooking. Q: What would you recommend a first time visitor to try at The Edge? BL: The charred octopus is one of our signature appetizers that is cooked sous-vide for a few hours and then charred on a grill at 1200 degrees. We serve it on a tray of mushrooms and octopus ink. Our dry-aged steaks are also very popular and we offer a three-pound lobster that is perfect for sharing. Q: How is your holiday menu different from your yearround fare and does it change each year? BL: During the holidays we focus on traditional favorites, but last year we had turducken, which is a boneless turkey stuffed with a boneless duck, stuffed with a chicken, all cooked together and served with traditional trimmings. Q: Then what foods make you feel like celebrating? BL: In France we do not have Thanksgiving, of course, since it’s an American holiday, but I celebrate it here and love all the traditional food that goes with it. The turkey, which I prefer filled with mixed fruit, and I really enjoy pumpkin soup. I also have to have a slice of pumpkin pie because I have a sweet tooth. And I like leftovers the next day with a glass of good wine. Q: Do you have any advice for home cooks? BL: Around the holidays, people are always pressed for time. There are a few things that can be prepared in advance. For example, you can do a lot of the side dishes a day or two in advance. In France, we say almost everything tastes better the next day. So, don’t be afraid to cook things the day before, then you have more time to spend with your family. Or just come to The Edge so you won’t have to spend any time cooking.
INTERVIEW WITH GENERAL MANAGER DAMIAN J. JENKINS Q: What do you think your guests enjoy the most at The Edge? Damian Jenkins: They enjoy the view, and the food, of course, but also the chef’s table, where parties of up to 14 people can dine in an area with an exhibition kitchen. Here, the chef will come out and personalize the menu for the guests. We also have a sommelier on site who will create a nice wine pairing. It is a lovely, semi-private experience, and a lot of people reserve it for the holidays. Q: What are some culinary highlights on the menu? DJ: Our prime beef comes directly from Amish farmers, and we have 21, 35, 60-day dry-aged beef that is very popular. Our Australian cut tomahawk, which is a 42” steak is very unique. Of course we offer lots of great old world, new world, as well as boutique wines. Q: Are there any secret food offerings readers should know of? DJ: We have a three-pound Maine Lobster that is not on the menu but it has been really well received and every time we bring it in as a special it sells out. We also surprise our guests at times by bringing in oysters as a special. We have, for example, Kumamoto oysters from Japan, which are smaller, and in my opinion the smaller the oyster the higher the quality, and they have a weaker flavor to them, which a lot of guests love.

here are four home collections available within the community: the Milano, Amalfi, Bellagio and Cortona. The homes have between two and four bedrooms, 2,400 to over 5,400 square feet of prime desert living space, and prices from the high $900,000’s to just over $2.9 million. Each home is built with a 10-foot disappearing pocket door, marrying the indoor-outdoor feeling that many desire when living in the desert. Many of the homes feature a guesthouse ideal for visiting family and friends.

Upon entrance to the 502 show home, one will make way through a short hallway and arched open doorway into the great room with a fireplace and built-in media center. The entrance is actually quite dramatic, since you can look straight through to the exterior pocket door to the outside world of palm trees and rolling acres of lush green golf course. The home also features limestone flooring in the majority of the house, a perfect complement for the transitional design elements throughout. Homes in this collection range from 2,400 to roughly 2,900 square feet.

A private courtyard entry welcomes prospective buyers to progress to the home’s entry that’s marked by rotund tower elements. In the heart of the home, a removed wall between the kitchen and dining room creates a refreshing opening that showcases new finishes. In the stunning kitchen, honed Perla Venata Quartzite adorns the generously sized island and countertops. Its wet bar countertops match those in the kitchen. porcelain wood-like tile from Bedrosians’ Allway’s Collection are found throughout the entire home. Residence 723 of the Bellagio Collection features an open floorplan that blends the master bedroom with its outside veranda. The desert sun is invited in to act as a source of natural light through the master’s wide sliding glass door. The 4,587 square-foot floorplan features an impressive grotto overlooking a four burner stove with built-in pot filler faucet. The triangular island with sink can afford for extra seating while you and your guests discuss new Club facilities coming in 2017. The grand finale of the home is quite possibly the outdoor entertaining pavilion, seeing as it resembles an individual in a beautiful backless gown. The backdrop couldn’t possibly be more breathtaking. The Cortona Collection is the most grandiose, ranging from roughly $2.6 to $2.9 million. The
master bedroom of Plan 923, and the collection’s largest floorplan, includes a direct vent sealed gas fireplace with log set, ideal for chilly desert nights, and beautiful wooden crown moulding below an inverted ceiling with recessed lighting. Going into the master bathroom one will find natural stone tile wrapped around a soaking tub. The formal dining in the home’s communal living space looks out onto the courtyard and through to the guesthouse. To hear the desert’s natural lullaby of the coyotes howl and the owls hoot, the pocket doors in the family and living room can be opened to turn on this night time melody. Although the homes are fabulous as is, onsite designers and an architect are available to accommodate buyers’ every architectural and design need. From flooring to cabinetry and from built-
ins to electrical, their expert team helps buyers customize their homes to suit their personalities. Wrap around pools, redesigned kitchens, additional wine rooms and garages, and guesthouses with two rooms instead of one have been common requests. Toscana Country Club offers 36 holes of Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf along with a wide array of dining, fitness, tennis and spa amenities all surrounded by a landscape that’s dotted with olive and cypress trees. Since an overwhelming number of people who seek a luxurious hideaway in the desert are already homeowners, it’s imperative that they seek only the best in their second home. The residences here give buyers an unmatched desert experience; this could be your opportunity to live like a globetrotter without ever leaving your charming desert home. LOCALE MAGAZINE | 119
