Shoppe Guide

Prints and Paper Seaside Papery Is Anything but Two-Dimensional

editor's note These past few months have felt far from normal. Restaurants require masks, the scent of sanitizer lingers in your car and “six feet apart” is starting to feel like a thousand miles. While our anxieties may be high and our morale low, we look forward to the day we can buy concert tickets again, go see our favorite team play and safely hug our closest friends. But in the midst of this crisis, one thing has become abundantly clear: us SoCal locals are a resilient bunch. From driveby birthday parades to supporting local restaurants with nightly take-out orders, we continue to find ways to make our neighbors smile. With that said, we’ve created a spectacular Shoppe Guide full of inspiring entrepreneurs, nifty gifts and gadgets and warm-weather essentials that will have you swooning. The people and products that grace these pages are not only authentic, but they hold a special place in the San Diego community. Among them is a denim

darling who repurposes an American staple (pg. 75), a local shop owner who is bringing print back in style (pg. 80) and a gal who’s mastered the art of the quintessential picnic (pg. 50). Gracing the cover of this issue is American soccer star Landon Donovan, who was a childhood hero of mine. As fearless on the field as he is behind the camera, Donovan dishes on his World Cup experience along with life as a player, coach and dad (pg. 30). Inspiration is everywhere, my friends— especially in our local communities. I hope these pages ignite a sense of resilience and creativity during these uncertain times. Whether you spot the perfect gift for your bestie, discover a new restaurant to support or find yourself planning the perfect postquarantine getaway, this issue is here to make you smile and look forward to the good days that lie ahead. Happy Reading!

San Diego

It was a misty morning at Torero Stadium in San Diego. American soccer star Landon Donovan emerged from the locker room in a black polo, slip-on sneakers and a matte-black stadium jacket ready for a day in front of the camera. Our team of photographers and stylists were eager to capture Donovan’s poise and dedication to the game with a series of shots in a place he’s best acquainted—the pitch. BLEACHER REPORT • For the first look, stylist Melissa Souza opted for a classic, comfortable fit. “As a retired soccer player and manager of a new team, I wanted to bring a sporty element to his personal style,” says Souza. As he posed amongst the bleachers, jogging up and down the shiny stairs, these first few shots captured Donovan in his new home where his team, Loyal SC, will continue to host their opponents. IN THE BACK OF THE NET • Dressed in a crisp, white quarter-zip sweatshirt, navy sweats and a charcoal blazer, Donovan headed down to the field for some fierce shots taken through the netting of a soccer goal. “Bring back the steely stare. Hold that—that looks great,” says photographer Nick Isabella. With his hands gripping the net, Donovan’s tenacious drive and passion for the sport shined. But in Donovan’s words, this iconic soccer shot was “all about the outfit.” LOCKER ROOM LOOK • To wrap up the day, the crew headed back to the Torero Stadium locker room for a series of casual-cool shots. As Donovan posed confidently in a striped T-shirt, gray collared jacket and a pair of slim pants, Isabella snapped away and got a shot that captured Donovan in a state of levitation, as he jumped straight-legged off of one of the locker room benches! After several hours of trying to capture the star that is Landon Donovan, Isabella looked down at his camera screen and smiled. “That’s a wrap!”

Rise and Grind Creative Director of Grind & Prosper Hospitality Group Shares His Favorite Parts About SD

San Diego NAME: Huy Hoang JOB TITLE: Creative/ Brand Director and Photographer, Grind & Prosper Hospitality Group

3 REASONS I LOVE WORKING AT GRIND & PROSPER:

RESIDENT OF: San Diego

1. We create an awesome experience for people through food and atmosphere. 2. There is always something new and cool happening. 3. We all work hard, but play harder (haha!).

LOCAL LIVING: 38 Years

SHOWING SUPPORT

I love that Grind & Prosper gives back to the community because, at the end of the day, the community looks out for us. The COVID pandemic is living proof of how we’ve all looked out for each other.

A DRINK THAT PACKS A PUNCH

Ò I’m not a beer drinker, so when I’m not drinking tequila or rum, I crack open a JuneShine. Like traditional kombucha, JuneShine contains probiotics, antioxidants and vitamins, and I love that they use sustainable, organic products. When they are open, the brand has a couple of cool intimate tasting rooms and have fun events from time to time. Follow them on social media for updates (@juneshineco).

TRIP TO THE TROPICS

Ò Head to Leilani’s Cafe in Pacific Beach for the best Loco Moco—a Hawaiian dish layered with rice, hamburger patty and an over easy egg, all smothered with gravy. It’s a candidate for the Cholesterol Hall of Fame, but it’s totally worth the splurge! They have a Polynesian store next door that has all sorts of fun gifts too. www.leilaniscafe.com

BRUNCH AND BEATS

Ò During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have found ways to support some of San Diego’s local DJs. Most of them are our friends who we have built relationships with over the years. We’ve created (socially-distanced) weekend events for the DJs to come and play music such as brunch tunes on the weekends at Miss B’s Coconut Club and DJs and on the roof overlooking the Carlsbad Village. www.missbcoconutclub.com

NICE TO MEAT YOU

Ò I love to take out-of-town visitors to Cowboy Star; their selection of steaks is amazing. Their 8-ounce Hokkaido Wagyu New York is flown in from Japan and aged for 23 days. They are open for lunch, and they have a $13 tasty burger where the patty is made with all the ground up trimmings from their steaks. www.cowboystarsd.com

FEELING FISHY

Ò TJ Oyster Bar has delicious Baja seafood fare for an affordable price. I typically order the whole fried snapper. The skin is crunchy and seasoned with spices and herbs, and the fish is so soft on the inside. It pairs perfectly with a michelada with tamarindo. I can spend all day here just having drinks with friends; I just need a designated driver! www.tjoyster.com

PLANTING A SEED

Estancia La Jolla has over 75 different succulents and plants on our 10-acre property, and we provide guests with guided garden tours! Upon check out, all guests receive a complimentary basil seed packet, so they can take a piece of Estancia home with them.

Ò One of my favorite restaurants to grab takeout from is Sushi Nekosan, which I just found out existed due to my daily walks around downtown La Jolla during the pandemic. It’s a small place but they have THE best vegan sushi ever; I crave their Sweetie Pie and Taste Like Tuna rolls on a weekly basis. I always take my order to the beach near Marine Street as it’s less crowded and the ocean there specifically reminds me of the beaches in Europe, which gets me dreaming of all the travels I wish to do once this pandemic ends!

The focus of our #SelfCareSunday program, which is a series where we partner with a local fitness studio each month, is to put on a day that includes an outdoor fitness class, complimentary cocktails and snacks from amazing local vendors. Proud studio partners so far have included F45 La Jolla, The Boxing Club, CorePower, Club Pilates and YogaSix.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Ò NINE-TEN Restaurant & Bar at the Grande Colonial Hotel is one of my favorite people-watching spots in La Jolla. Everything from their burgers to their Rueben sandwiches is delicious, and it’s so much fun to take out-of-towners here. Sit outside on their patio and order off their fabulous wine list. What more do you need than a bottle of rosé and your favorite visitors? www.thegrandecolonial.com/nine-ten-lajolla-restaurant

Long Beach NAME: Lauren Trickett JOB TITLE: Lillet Brand Ambassador

3 FAVORITE LILLET DRINKS

RESIDENT OF: Long Beach

LOCAL LIVING: 2 Years

MELTING POT

There are different languages spoken in California. This variety creates a beautiful sound we get to hear when walking down a street or sitting in a restaurant.

LIKE THE FRENCH

Ò When hosting at home, I love surprising guests with a French margarita. Adding this elegant twist to a familiar classic is always a crowd pleaser. You’ll need 2 ounces of Lillet Blanc, 1 ounce of Olmeca Altos blanco tequila, .75 ounces of fresh lime juice and half an ounce of agave or honey syrup. Shake and strain it over ice and garnish with an orange wheel.

HAPPY HOUR AT HOME

Ò After bartending for 12 years, making complicated cocktails at home is something I only do on special occasions. My go-to is usually a Lillet and soda water with a slice of orange and fresh mint from the garden. It’s a simple cocktail that is light and refreshing, which is perfect for winding down after the 405 commute, and before you start the battle of “What’s for dinner?”

LILLET www.lillet.com

ORANGE YA GLAD

Ò One of the main components of Lillet is the housemade orange liqueur that helps comprise its unique signature flavor. When they first began making this, they would use the peels from thousands of Hattian and Spanish oranges in the liqueur and donate the fruit of the oranges to local schools and hospitals.

ANY WAY YOU WANT IT

Ò Lillet is one of the most versatile spirits I have ever come across—it will really surprise you how many ways it can be used. You can drink it on the rocks or make it into a French mojito; it’s fantastic when using it in the traditional Thanksgiving cranberry sauce or freeze it with lemonade for a summer treat. If you want more beverage inspo, follow @ lillet.usa on Facebook and Instagram!

SEAFOOD SENSATION

Ò Lillet is incredible with seafood. The region of Bordeaux, where Lillet comes from, is known for its vast marine cuisine, so it makes sense that the two would be suited for each other. I love to make a simple panseared halibut with summer veggies and fresh tomatoes. After searing the fish, I use butter and Lillet Blanc to deglaze the pan and sautée the veggies.

San Diego NAME: Aaron Linekin JOB TITLE: Market Development Manager Beer Division, Constellation Brands

COMPANY CULTURE

I love working for Constellation Brands because of the brands themselves. Each of our brands have individual stories to tell. It is great to see our customers making memories while enjoying one of our beverages.

RESIDENT OF: San Diego LOCAL LIVING: 50 Years

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

The things I love the most about living in San Diego are the sunnyand-75 weather and endless surf. Where else can you surf in the morning and go to the snow in the afternoon? It’s pure paradise.

CONSTELLATION GIVES BACK

Ò Constellation encourages each employee to get involved in their local community. We are prompted to engage in and give back to a cause that is personal to each of us. Twice a year, I organize a beach clean up with our wholesale partner and the Surfrider Foundation.

FIRE UP THE GRILL

Ò My favorite drink to make at home is a Corona mango seltzer with a chamoy or Tajin rim. The light mango flavor and spicy Tajin makes for the ultimate summer beverage—best enjoyed with friends, of course!

ONE WITH THE WAVES

Ò During the height of the COVID-19 shutdown, I did a lot of surfing. I grew up surfing in Point Loma and try to get in the water as much as I can. Surfing with friends brings calm to the current situation—nothing like a little salt water therapy to clear the mind!

CHEERS TO THAT

Ò Lately, I have been sipping on Corona Hard Seltzers. The flavors are light and not overwhelming, and each can only has 90 calories! If I am able to crack open a few on a sunny day by the pool, I know it’s going to be a good day.

#TBT

Ò If I am pairing my drink with a meal, I opt for a cold Pacifico, which goes perfectly with smoked BBQ tri-tip and horseradish sauce. I love this meal because it reminds me of summers growing up, spent surfing in Northern Baja.

THREE WORLD CUP APPEARANCES, SIX MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS AND 213 PROFESSIONAL GOALS ONLY BEGINS TO DEFINE THE LEGEND THAT IS LANDON DONOVAN. As a player who put US soccer on the map, Donovan continues to take the game to the next level. But instead of lacing up his own cleats, players from around the world have come to play for him at San Diego’s newest professional club, Loyal SC. And within 30 minutes of talking to the seasoned soccer star, one thing became crystal clear: Donovan’s passion for the game lies far beyond the goals, the wins and the fame. For Donovan, soccer is the ultimate equalizer—a game that unites and ignites people from around the world. “It’s the only sport where you can step into a bar—there’s a game on—and you find yourself sitting next to someone born in Kenya, who’s sitting next to someone born in Argentina, who is sitting next to someone born in Kansas. They have a mutual love and respect for the game, and they care about each other just because of what this game is. I’ve never seen that in any other sport, nothing even close,” says Donovan as he slips on his sneakers.

Development Program), and he successfully made the team. After moving from the state and regional teams to the national team for youth players in the same year, Donovan was approached by a scout for a club in Germany. “Until that point, it hadn’t occurred to me that this could be something serious,” says Donovan. But after a few short years in Europe, he made a decision that would change the scope of US soccer forever—he returned stateside to play Major League Soccer.

“And that right there is very special.”

His move to the states lit a fire in the hearts of Eurocentric American fans—fans who had faith that Donovan would raise the game to new heights in this country—and that he did. After 32 goals and three years with the San Jose Earthquakes, Donovan made a move to the Los Angeles Galaxy to be closer to his family. “I’m an LA boy at heart,” admits Donovan. “It was home for me. Having my friends and family—and eventually my wife and my kids—come and watch was really special.” His success with the LA Galaxy sparked a movement among young players. “I think by playing in my home city, it gave other American players who thought they were ‘supposed to be playing on the bigger stage,’ permission to come back and help build something here.”

Before “Landon Donovan’’ became an American soccer household name, there was a humble beginning for the young footballer. As his mom puts it, from the time Donovan could walk, his older brother eagerly awaited a playmate. “If we had a chance to go outside and play soccer, or basketball, or tennis, we would do it,” says Donovan. “I got an initiation into the sport really early.” His relationship with soccer was unique, however. Growing up, Donovan and his brother weren’t allowed to watch TV in the house. “Because of that, I had no knowledge of the bigger soccer world. I literally just liked to play,” says Donovan. At the ripe age of 14, Donovan had the opportunity to try out for ODP (Olympic

“I remember walking down the tunnel to the stadium...and realizing how lucky I was to play in a World Cup. It sticks with me to this day.” —LANDON DONOVAN

For Donovan, there’s no place like home, but when it came to stepping onto the South Korea World Cup stage at the mere age of 20, it wasn’t something he shied away from. “I remember walking down the tunnel to the stadium and looking over at one of my teammates (Demarcus Beasley, who I had played with since I was 16) and realizing how lucky I was to play in a World Cup. It sticks with me to this day.” While his World Cup debut in the moment seemed to be a nod toward his rising stardom and tremendous talent, he quickly found it meant something so much more. “Not everyone lives like we do,” says Donovan, with an emotional pause. “Being able to see the world really helped me as a human being. It gave me a level of compassion. And if you don’t travel, you never know that—you can’t understand it,” he explains. Admittedly, Donovan has dealt with a series of tumultuous ups and downs in his personal life. “I am crazy driven and crazy ambitious,” he says, “so how I do anything is how I do everything—I commit myself. But that’s exhausting.” As someone who comes from a family with a history of mental health issues, he’s learned how to understand and manage his own. “Seeing a therapist has positively impacted my life as much or more than anything else I’ve ever done,” says Donovan. These challenges, paired with resilient dedication and love for the game, have granted him the ability to understand people and their own struggles. “My number one core value is compassion, and I think the majority of that comes from this sport.”

San Diego to play for Donovan and his team of coaches, his perspective remained the same. “I want to help these young players make better lives for themselves. It’s selfish, honestly, because it’s what gives me the greatest pleasure,” he smiles. In order to do what he does best, Donovan brought in assistant coaches Carrie Taylor and Nate Miller to work with the team from a tactical and organizational standpoint. “These are two really driven, hard-working people who have earned it every step of the way,” expresses Donovan. After several months of time off due to the COVID-19 crisis, Loyal SC resumed play in early July with an updated season structure. The team will continue their 16-game regular season with hopes of qualifying for the 2020 USL Championship Playoffs. “It was certainly challenging to have COVID hit right as our season started,” admits Donovan. “But our organization handled it extremely well. I feel very fortunate to be part of such an incredible club.” Loyal SC continues to work closely with San Diego’s Rady Children’s Hospital to get each player tested. Despite his strong leadership and playoff ambitions, Donovan surprisingly dials back when it comes to raising his two sons. “I don’t want my kids to be forced into anything,” he says. His wife points out, “He won’t even kick the ball around with them.” With a strong belief in allowing his kids to be who they want to be, he adopts a hands-off approach when it comes to parenting. “When they’re born, I want to open the present and see what I got,” he explains with a smile.

His heart for the game and passion for people will provide the foundation for his next venture. “When you’re in a team environment, you’re not successful by accident. You learn how to impact games, impact seasons and impact people.” And Donovan will continue to do just that. This time, however, it will be from the sideline as coach of San Diego’s Loyal SC.

Donovan’s accomplishments feel less like trophies on a shelf and more like experiences that have shaped the man. He continues to impact the game of soccer and its people with humility, grace and a competitive spirit. And when it’s all said and done, and people hear the name “Landon Donovan,” he hopes they say one thing:

As players from Africa, Jamaica, Panama, Great Britain and other countries filtered into sunny

“He cared.”

Ú Nonprofit organization San Diego Craft Collective started a campaign selling handmade, reusable cloth masks. “Part of our mission as a nonprofit is to support local craftspeople, so we came up with the Mask 2Gether project where people in the community buy a mask, and we donate a second mask,” says Steffi Dotson, president and founder of San Diego Craft Collective. Dotson and her team have donated twice to Rady Children’s Hospital and to the City of San Diego’s Convention Center; they also plan on launching Craft 2Gether, a new project where they will sell craft kits, and for each kit purchased, they’ll donate a kit to a child in need.

Ú Highland Valley Vineyards donated 20% of all wine sales from early March to May 15 to the San Diego County Food Bank. Their generous donation was matched by another food bank donor, making the final contribution equivalent to over 18,000 meals. “With so many of our customers coming in to purchase wine, we felt it would be nice to extend this appreciation to those less fortunate during this particularly difficult time,” says Ray Schnorr, co-owner and co-winemaker at Highland Valley Vineyards. The winery continues to support a variety of important initiatives in San Diego, including the Rotary, Poway Arts and the YMCA. “We are proud to give back to our community,” says Schnorr.

Ú Inspiration is everywhere—especially in our local communities. During the height of the COVID-19 crisis, San Diego business owners took big steps to ensure the love and support of our healthcare workers, the unemployed and those most at risk. From crafting protective face masks to generously donating meals, these five companies (and the teams behind them) are nothing short of inspirational.

In It Together Ú In the month of May, East Village Association launched their EV Ambassador Program—a project designed to create a centralized communication between the business and residential communities during the COVID-19 crisis. Volunteers were assigned to 10 neighborhoods to serve as the main point of communication between business owners, residents, property managers and the East Village Association. Their duties included the circulation of important information like providing updates on current business offerings, homelessness and cleanliness, as well as performing routine checkins. Through this program, East Village Association worked to ignite a sense of togetherness, preserve the spirit of community and keep communication alive in the neighborhood. Within the past six months, like other SoCal communities, East Village endured a difficult economic crisis that included the shutdown of restaurants and bars and the closure of shops, museums, venues (including Petco Park) and other small businesses. In efforts to comply with safety regulations and keep the community connected, the East Village Association stepped up to the plate with a game plan to help keep local businesses afloat. “We started talking about the idea of a curbside dining program back in early April and got the city involved to figure out how it could work logistically,” explains Diane Peabody Straw, executive director of East Village Association. “The goal is to allow restaurants to expand their space so that they can serve more people while maintaining social distancing.”

The curbside dining initiative began in late June with the expansion of additional patio seating onto the sidewalk in front of each participating restaurant. “This allows restaurants to have more square footage to work with to make sure tables can be properly spaced,” says Straw. J St, which is normally filled with cars, was shut down for pedestrians to walk, providing more room to pass one another and maintain distance. “We hope to reignite a sense of confidence in people so they feel comfortable enough to engage with the local businesses, recognizing that the proper safety measures are in place.” As of now, EVA plans to continue the program through the end of the year, depending on its overall effectiveness and California’s state of emergency. According to Straw, the East Village community is young, vibrant and very diverse. “We see a huge range of working professionals from tech to art to everything in between,” she explains. At one point, it was estimated that East Village was home to over 15,000 dogs, and the majority of residents live in apartments. “This speaks to a very active community,” says Straw. “We wanted to create a place where people can come down out of their apartment buildings, walk their dogs and enjoy East Village again.” As EVA works to unite the community, the association’s larger-scale events have been put on hold, such as the 10th annual East Village Opening Day Block Party and placemaking programs that include the display of public art. “Since March, we have consistently used the word ‘pivot,’” says Straw. “We have pivoted our focus to find ways to

Restaurants have been potentially hit the hardest during the pandemic, but despite the trying circumstances they face, many have stepped up in unique and selfless ways to give back to the community. “It’s been really inspiring to see,” says Straw. MAKE pizza+salad pledged for every pizza purchased, they would give one to a first responder, police officer or Clean and Safe worker in East Village. “Anytime someone wanted to stop in for a pizza, they were taken care of. Seeing things like that are really cool,” Straw says. Social Tap and a few other restaurants worked to provide affordable, large family meals for takeout and reasonably priced meals for those who were laid off, while the owners of Breakfast Republic dedicated one of their locations entirely to serving free meals to anyone who had been laid off—no questions asked! “We are seeing so much generosity. And in a time of such uncertainty, that is really powerful,” says Straw. “As the largest neighborhood in Downtown San Diego, we are dedicated to making sure we pay attention to all corners of East Village, providing programs that are beneficial to everybody in our community.” As the people and businesses of East Village press on and look toward a vibrant future, EVA continues to provide support to those who need it most.

Kimmons’ favorite spot to set up a picnic is the green huts at La Jolla Cove. “Our tables are a good height, so you can sit overlooking the water.”

WRITTEN BY: NADINE BLANCO PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: JUSTIN CRITZ PHOTOGRAPHY When Lauren Kimmons staged a Valentine’s Day picnic to promote her vintage rental company in 2011, she didn’t think it’d be the inception of what would later become Pop Up Picnic Co. In fact, she recalls not giving the idea much attention at all until people outwardly expressed their love for her work. “We kind of just kept getting requests for it, so I just kept doing them and offhandedly called it a ‘pop up picnic.’’’ Having started her career in the wedding industry by renting out vintage furniture and designing events, curating a beautiful picnic came naturally to Kimmons. In 2016, the stress of the rental company led her to sell the business, but at that point, buzz around her “pop up picnics” grew even stronger. When revamping the concept for this new business, she drew from her wedding industry background. “So often, you do these magnificent events, but it’d be cool to have a micro-event that feels just as special—that you can do for everyday stuff—and that’s how the picnic aspect came up,” she says. “One of the things that’s so nice about living in San Diego is having these beautiful sceneries and places to set up picnics.” Today, Kimmons creates immersive picnic experiences where the locations speak for themselves, needing only to add finishing touches like fresh flowers, unique decor and fresh charcuteries sourced from Mona Lisa Italian Deli and Venissimo Cheese. SOLANA BEACH’S RANCH 45 OFFERS UP LOCAL PROVISIONS WHILE STAYING TRUE TO ITS ROOTS

Built on the farm-to-fork approach, Solana Beach’s Ranch 45 prides itself in letting the rancher, fisherman and farmer shine on each plate. “It’s a subconscious approach...It’s who we are,” says Pam Schwartz, co-founder of Ranch 45.

Solana Beach

FOOD

The vision for the eatery extends back to its original roots, while the name, Ranch 45, is a tribute to the restaurant’s inherent values of ethical farming and sustainability. In an effort to uphold these values, Ranch 45 sells and serves Brandt Beef products in their restaurant and butcher shop.

• From fresh cuts of meat to hearty breakfast options, Ranch 45’s farmto-table approach goes beyond the traditional.

The Brandt family established their cattle business in 1945 and became one of the first ranchers in Southern California to go all-natural––no hormones and no antibiotics. Famous for their beef and sustainable practices, the family grows and harvests all of the grass and grains that the cattle are fed and recycles all of the water that goes through their plant. “They work hard to reduce waste by using each part of the cow instead of dumping unwanted parts into a landfill. It’s really cool what they do,” says Schwartz.

DECOR • Wood furniture and industrial accents give the space a cozy, rustic feel.

Scattered throughout the Ranch 45 menu, you’ll find various dishes featuring the famous Brandt Beef, such as the mouthwatering Brandt Burger, the corned beef Reuben sandwich and the savory shaved ribeye taco. While Ranch 45 boasts an extensive menu of locally sourced ingredients and responsibly raised meats, the restaurant houses a butcher shop and offers live cooking classes. “We are so many things in such a little space,” Schwartz explains. the origins of their food and how to best prepare the meats sold at the restaurant’s butcher shop. Through these offerings, Ranch 45 has established itself in the local community and continues to educate its patrons on the value of sustainability. For Schwartz, Ranch 45 has allowed her to put her skills to use in restaurant management, wine service, education and sourcing local ingredients. “I grew up in the farming community, in a small town in northern Florida; we just ate what was available,” she says. As a graduate from the Culinary Institute of America, Schwartz’s career has been focused around fine dining, her passion for hospitality and making sure that people are well-fed and happy. “The best is seeing somebody who’s not necessarily having the best day, come in and walk out with a smile on their face. That’s what it’s all about.”

PROTECTIVE MEASURES •When reopening, all health and safety precautions are taken into account to ensure guests’ confidence in dining out.

“WE WANTED TO DO OUR PART TO GIVE BACK TO ALL THE FIRST RESPONDERS out there

working long hours and putting themselves at risk. It was about supporting them in whatever way we could, and

the best and most obvious way we saw was through meal donations,” says Natasha Ross-Prickett, GPH’s regional

manager/partner. After their first large donation, other

departments and hospitals reached out, and deliveries to

local law enforcement agencies were made. A partnership with local nonprofit Frontline Foods was born shortly

thereafter, and they ended up delivering 2,000 meals to frontline workers in San Diego. Recognizing that children and families were also going to be impacted by the pandemic, the charitable efforts didn’t stop there. A longstanding relationship exists between GPH and It’s All About the Kids—a local nonprofit that assists families struggling to feed their children. By volunteering weekly, supplying PPE, donating over 150 meals to volunteers and donating funds to provide over 20,000 pounds of groceries for children and families in need, GPH contributed to those hit hard by the pandemic. GPH employees took action of their own, starting GoFundMe fundraisers and supporting their colleagues in various ways. “We told our staff from each venue, as well as the staff at all our sister restaurants, that we would supply 58 LOCALE MAGAZINE

meals, groceries and dry goods for them whenever needed. We also bought meals for other displaced hospitality workers in our extended industry ‘family,’” says Ross-Prickett. Grocery pick-ups and staff dinners were held with other San Diego restaurants. “So often people think of San Diego’s dynamic bar and restaurant scene and see it as a huge cutthroat competition with everyone vying to be the best and most popular place; however, at times like these, you really see the true heart of the industry and the sense of community that unites them. The overwhelming support we received from everyone during the closure definitely inspired us to keep moving forward with our donations and support to others,” explains

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS •“They’re all microactions that contribute to a larger goal, which is raising the spirits of those around us in our community. Offering small things like a warm meal, strong cocktail or a fun virtual game night, keeps people in touch and brings some joy to an otherwise awful time,” says Ross-Prickett.

Ross-Prickett. Other initiatives taken were offering $5.04 (based off the 504 area code of New Orleans) meals at Louisiana Purchase, live streams with local DJs and live-stream trivia nights for locals and hospitality workers. GPH was able to still show genuine support for those struggling.

In these hard and unexpected times, the support and love the San Diego community has for each other shined through. Everybody was going through these hard times together while supporting each other. “In many ways it was confirmation that we [GPH] have been doing it right. We were reminded that cultivating relationships and creating a good company culture with an amazing staff is extremely valuable. In this business, you often get caught up in the day-to-day hustle and bustle; quarantine and the shutdown actually gave us time to stop and appreciate these things,” says Pete Cich, owner and founder of GPH. Implementing the

necessary changes while having to constantly adapt throughout this year has shown the strength and resilience of the San Diego hospitality industry as a whole. In addition, each GPH restaurant supported a different nonprofit organization on Juneteenth, donating percentages of sales to the NAACP, The San Diego Urban League, The Bail Project and YoPace. A culinary expo called “Bad Boyz of Culinary” has been planned to showcase several San Diego Black chefs. Ross-Prickett says that Grind and Prosper Hospitality will continue to work with the Black community of San Diego by supporting and partnering with small Black-owned businesses. GPH is hopeful for brighter days and good things ahead. Cultivating community relationships and giving back when possible is at the forefront of the GPH beliefs. “We hope to come out of it better than we went in,” says Ross-Prickett.

“I love the design process. Placing and replacing different designs until I’m happy with the final pattern takes hours and is so much fun. My absolute favorite part, though, is adding finish to the final product and seeing all of the grain come to life beneath the different finishes. My Patriarchy Portrait illustration and my Sunburst Mosaic are my favorites—I never tire of looking at them.”

“For us, making things provides a break from our hectic world. It’s an opportunity to unplug and truly enjoy the process— not just the end result. That’s what we’re really into; it’s not just going through the motions of making something, it’s experiencing each step of the process, both as an effort to improve your skills and to just zone out.”

“Creating an intricate wall hanging often starts at my sketchbook. Once I have a design, I spend hours or days just tying knots. Finally, I meticulously trim until each piece is complete. My favorite part is stepping back to see the piece right before the final trim. I love seeing how a sketch can evolve into something completely new as I progress.”

“Seek inspiration, visualize, sketch ideas, convert sketches to designs, communicate designs to weavers, await the magic. [The best parts of designing are] experimenting with colorways and shapes, awaiting the final product and unveiling what a drawn design becomes as a woven piece of art. Creativity is the manifestation of my thoughts and vision into reality—it is my freedom.”

“I work a little backwards. I create an item first, and from that item I formulate a mood and story. Production... is almost always challenging and oftentimes painful but a necessary evil. It looks a lot like Band-Aids and broken nails—I’ve worked with my hands for years now, which basically means never having a decent manicure, but it comes with the territory.”

Simone is a coffee connoisseur, a sunshine soaker and (undeniably) a sustainable savage. She opened The Nada Shop one year ago in the heart of Encinitas, right off the buzzing Highway 101. Customers can bring in containers from home or buy them at the store. “We have the ability here to plant the seed,” says Simone. “They might

think twice about getting that plastic water bottle or bringing their own cup to get coffee.” It’s these gentle micromoments that have the greatest ripple effect. “Little things you can do here and there add up to make a really big impact,” says Simone. “It doesn’t have to be an absolute mentality.” People can make small switches to their daily habits to live more sustainably. Walk to the cafe or ride a bike. Keep a Zero Waste Kit in your car, which is one of The Nada Shop’s essentials. “If you go get coffee and don’t have your reusable cup, just get a coffee and don’t get a lid with it,” Simone says. Even those seemingly minuscule actions add up to a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

4. “It only makes sense that being in Little Italy, we carry the best items from Italy! We are one of the few boutiques in the US that carries one of the biggest Italian resort wear brands. One of our Italian dresses, From Positano with Love is the perfect piece to make a statement in.” 5. “Inspired by the crystalline views of Capri, our Italian handmade leather sandals can be customized with intricate Swarovski designs and the Tuscan leather colorway of your choice.”

The Nada Shop is home to a range of refillable household, body care and beauty goods. From patterned one-pieces and comfy boardshorts to beachy button-ups and custom rashguards, Seaesta Surf is a sunny San Diego brand perfect for any kiddo that loves to surf, eat and nap! 1. “The Pommes Button-Up Shirt in Tan Camo is the easiest way for your kiddo to dress up and still look casually cool. This FemaleOwned Business Channels Creativity Into Edgy and Empowering Designs

W

With some sass, a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor and a hell of a lot of drive, Courtney Wall, the founder and creative director of Lady Killas, has created a brand that is all about embracing your badass side. The online-based clothing and merchandise line and the female empowerment group have been Wall’s passion projects and creative outlets since 2017.

3. “In the Sea Ripple Tie Dye Boardshorts, your kid will be the coolest one on the beach! Bonus: they are 50% recycled and 50% organic.” 4. “We collaborated with San Diego artist Denisse Wolf to create the Tigres Sorbet Swimsuit. She hand-painted these tigers to create a grr-ific wearable art piece!” 5. “Rashguards don’t have to be covered in cartoon characters to be cool to kids. Keep them protected from the sun in the Calico Crab Rashguard with UPF 50+.”

Lady Killas is essentially a onewoman shop, but as Wall puts it, “The brand is made by many. I couldn’t run the business without my crew of die-hard friends… Simply put, we’re a group of badasses who believe in equality and the hustle.”

The brand is not only a line of merchandise, but also an organization whose purpose is to grow and empower women in leadership. Wall wanted a way to bring together women in the design

industry, so in 2017, she started a meetup group that eventually grew into a network of artists, designers and leaders. Wall then put her empowerment-inspired products online that same year. She says that the black-and-white designs make her pieces simple, but fun and easy to wear. Ranging in price from $10 to $30, the shop’s items are also accessible and affordable to badasses of any income bracket. The sayings on the shirts are relatable too, as they are pulled from pop culture, hip-hop lyrics and Wall’s own life experiences. “The brand doesn’t take itself too seriously,” she says. “The voice mirrors my own after a glass of wine. It’s casual, sarcastic and empowered.”

Situated in the quaint neighborhood of Golden Hill, Girl on the Go opened its doors with the unique idea of offering luxury, affordable skincare services during the evening hours for working professionals. Unlike most spas, Girl on the Go is open until 10 p.m., Monday through Friday. “I wanted to find a way to help men and women who work hard be able to still treat themselves,” says Dana Battaglia, owner and head esthetician of Girl on the Go. The late-night notion quickly caught on, and over the years, Girl on the Go has evolved into a full-service wellness spa, offering massages, event makeup services, airbrush tanning, waxing and all-natural skincare treatments. One of the salon’s most popular treatments is the Pure Bliss spa experience—a 2.5-hour facial and 78 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Girl on the Go sells four different skincare brands; among them is best-seller Ilike Organic Skin Care, a Hungarian brand that uses solely cold-pressed pulp instead of essential oils. “With Ilike, you get all of those natural essences from the plant,” says Battaglia. > Print isn’t dead! While we may live in the digital age, Seaside Papery has been alive and kicking since its establishment in 2004. Owner Jori Fentiman first opened her shop in Coronado as a way for people to find personalized stationery and invitations locally rather than opting for mass-produced chain store products. While the store still receives a significant amount of customers purchasing stationery, they’ve introduced a range of products that also relates to our tech-driven society. “In this digital world we live in, it’s really great to witness people enjoying what may seem like mundane items,” says Fentiman. Many of the technological products they sell are created by stationery designers. Seaside Papery often works with local artists and companies, as well as craftsmen across the country, to design locally themed products. “This way, we are able to combine our ideas with their talent,” Fentiman explains. Her background in graphic communications paired with her buying experience from retail stores went hand-inhand when finalizing the concept of her shop. Seaside Papery’s aesthetic appeals to an array of ages, genders and demographics. “We have something for everyone, whether it be a unique fountain pen from Germany or a handmade alpaca from a small family in Tijuana,” notes Fentiman. The colorful shop aims to be a creative haven for patrons; the longer they stay, the more there is to discover. Beach Babe •“I love the ocean—sometimes I’ll even work from the beach. If I won the lottery, I would keep my company, travel and spend most of my time seaside,” says Caffrey.

Four years ago, Shiloh Caffrey and her family left behind their fast-paced SoCal lifestyle and moved to the tiny medieval village of Montone, Italy. Afterschool sports practices and morning commutes were swiftly replaced with afternoon wine tastings, kickball games in the backyard and a cherished sense of togetherness. With just three restaurants, a handful of houses and a couple hundred residents, Montone offered Caffrey and her family of four an opportunity to experience the purest form of Italian living. “Southern California is so fast-paced,” says Caffrey. “It’s not LA or New York City, but there is such an importance placed on being productive and efficient. Living in Montone was a huge contrast—it kind of felt like quarantine!”

Words to Live By •The company’s motto, Life’s Worth Celebrating, means “pausing in whatever moment it is… and celebrating both the big and the little things,” explains Caffrey. Fully Stocked •“My husband and I always laugh about how if we had to close the company tomorrow, we would be left with hundreds of bottles of wine we are obsessed with,” jokes Caffrey.

3 Favorite Styles of Bubbles:

1 Brut Nature Zero residual sugar, dry, pairs well with food

2 Rosé Always in my fridge, great for hosting

3 Vintage Champagne Pricier, aged longer, perfect for a special occasion

After 12 months of cherishing local Italian culture and exploring a number of family-run vineyards and wineries, they decided to move back to California, spending the next six months in Napa Valley. “There is so much knowledge of the industry [in Napa] so I started studying wine. People are so versed in it that even the local liquor stores carry such amazing wines!” says Caffrey.

“The bottles I curate are meant to represent a particular season, year and plot of land; I love that they tell a story.” —Shiloh Caffrey

The slow-paced life of Italy and the traditional wine-making techniques they use, paired with her education from Napa sparked a creative passion for authentically made champagne. “But San Diego is home for us,” she explains. So her family returned to Encinitas, but Caffrey found herself in a predicament. She noticed that the bottles available in San Diego are essentially all over-priced, mass-produced, label-driven champagnes and sparkling wines. “I had to do something about it,” says Caffrey. With a dose of encouragement from her husband and a love for clean-farmed, boutique bubbles, Caffrey launched We Drink Bubbles––a champagne club that delivers premium, hand-crafted, smallbatch sparkling wines from around the globe right to your doorstep. Caffrey obtained the licensing to sell alcohol online, and by the time her family had resettled in San Diego County, she had formed relationships with wine reps and put together her first club shipment. “At the time, most people I knew were buying champagne by the case at Costco anyway,” says Caffrey. “So, I sent an email out to all of my best friends and acquaintances who I know like champagne, and that kind of got the ball rolling. Champagne is one of the easier things to convince people to try, and when you have a product that you’re passionate about and you know is good, sharing it is really easy.”

an all-natural process. From planting the vineyard to putting the cork in the bottle, each wine comes from one specific family-owned vineyard and is made in a much smaller batch. “The bottles I curate are meant to represent a particular season, year and plot of land; I love that they tell a story. It’s a farmers market product as opposed to a mass-produced bottle,” she says. And while her selections rotate frequently, each wine contains no added sugars or chemicals. “The difference you feel when you’re drinking cleaner, non-chemically farmed wine is huge––it becomes a no-brainer!” Ready to join the club? Us too! Here’s how it works: the idea is that you can get as many bottles as you want, when you want them. Whether you’re a bubbles fanatic and can’t wait to try a variety of vintage champagnes or you just want to dip your toes in the water, We Drink Bubbles lets you customize your membership without any fees––you just pay for the wine! The bottles rotate, so you recieve new selections every month and you can pause, skip or gift whenever you like. “I wanted to cater to older and maybe wealthier people who want high-end champagne on hand and also those who are in their 20s [and] just want to try it,” says Caffrey. During the past few months, it’s been difficult to find ways to celebrate with cancelled graduation ceremonies, restaurant closures, birthdays spent at home and a plethora of safety regulations in place. But for Caffrey, aside from sharing her passion with others, she believes that life is worth celebrating, which is her company’s motto. “It means pausing in whatever moment it is…and celebrating both the big and the little things,” she says. So whether you just finished a tumultuous work week or you’re having the gals over for a birthday brunch, there is always a time and a place for a pop, fizz and clink!

This stunning craftsman hotel, modeled after Greene and Greene’s famous Gamble and Blacker Houses in Pasadena, boasts an impressive 170 rooms and sits along some of California’s most breathtaking coastline. Farm-to-Fork

Ú Credited with being a

leader of the farm-to-table movement, Executive Chef Jeff Jackson designed The Lodge’s signature menu at A.R. Valentien around locally sourced ingredients. The concept is rustic and simple, but the dishes are packed with flavor and rotate with the seasons. The decor reflects elements of restaurant namesake Albert Robert Valentien, who was an American artist known for his botanical watercolor paintings and ceramic works.

Ú A major feature of The Lodge is its proximity to the Torrey Pines Golf Course. Overhauled in 2008 for the U.S. Open, it consists of two courses, which are both over 7,000 acres and par 72. The Lodge offers numerous packages sure to impress any golf lover! When you’re done with your round, catch a quick bite at The Grill, a popular hangout for golf enthusiasts.

to splurge, consider booking one of The Lodge’s five premier suites. In addition to private balconies and fireplaces, the Gamble and Blacker Suites come with their own full kitchens. Don’t be alarmed if your private chef suddenly disappears; they probably just slipped out through their separate entrance! 4

The Finishing Touches

Ú Look for unique design elements scattered throughout the property, from the impressive Torrey Pines stainedglass front doors and the Tiffany glass lamps throughout the lobby to the handcrafted fixtures, pinecone motifs and kilts worn by the bellmen. Another impressive detail: the interior wood used to craft The Lodge is violin grade.

Disconnect & Reconnect CAMP UNDER THE STARS AT THIS RETRO TRAILER POND SET ON 130 ACRES IN PASO ROBLES

WRITTEN BY: TAYLOR GORSKI

Call up your girlfriends, your SO or a group of your wine-loving friends and road trip up to The Trailer Pond located on the California Central Coast. Situated in Paso Robles (about 200 miles north of Los Angeles), The Trailer Pond is where camping meets wine tasting. Not just sleepin-a-tent kind of camping, but one-of-a-kind camping in vintage trailers (that are oh, so Insta-worthy).

Paso Robles

The Trailer Pond is tucked away on 130 acres of the organically farmed, boutique Alta Colina winery.

Upgraded Camping

Do Not Disturb

• Five bright, retro trailers surround the property’s pond, each with their own little front porch. Each trailer sleeps one to three adults. While you sleep in comfort— and style—it’s still a camping experience. “There is a communal outdoor camp kitchen that includes all pots and pans, communal bathrooms, hot outdoor showers and an amazing dock for lounging under the night sky with perfect visibility of the stars!” explains Holm.

• Spend a weekend unplugged, outside in the sunshine and with a glass of vino in hand. Private wine tastings are available on the Sundowner Deck, and catered farm-to-table dinners are available for groups. Hike through the bright green vineyards, take a relaxing private yoga class and relax with sunset movie nights in the magical vineyard. Don’t forget your film or disposable camera!

Travel With Friends • Individual trailers are available for booking, as well as group offerings and packages. Whether it’s a bachelorette party, a work retreat or a romantic weekend away, The Trailer Pond awaits your next weekend adventure.
