SOMETHING IN THE AIR ®

EDITOR'S NOTE This beloved San Diego issue serves as not only the last issue of the year but also my last issue as its editor. It’s been a wildly fun ride and it was my pleasure to attempt to capture all that this city is in glossy print form. But before I get sappy, here’s what this issue is packin’, and trust me, you won’t want to put it down. We made this Escape Edition full of concepts that hopefully awaken the wanderlust inside of you. Whether your heart is pulling you to travel across seas to Bali, across borders to Mexico or across the I-5 to San Francisco, we have you covered. The new year comes with new challenges, and I challenge you to add some diverse geotags to your IG feed. But if that’s not your thing, that’s cool too. We have a killer staycation shout out (pg. 68) and a cheat sheet on how to spend 24 hours in Barrio Logan (pg. 142). You can tour right here in your own city—I mean, it is America’s Finest. Our Escape Guide lists out the places to take your fam when they come to visit for the holidays. Yes,

there’s something even for your sister that’s been vegan for two weeks, those club-crazy cousins and golfing spots for grandpa! This season’s gift guide is basically singing its own rendition of Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” with an abundance of choices for your girl squad (pg. 115)—the trendsetter, the luxe lover, the makeup pro, the friend that’s always on the go and everyone in between. Foodies, we didn’t forget about you. Turn the page to our Meals Deconstructed (pg. 94). Hint: there’s a loaded mac and cheese flight waiting for you. Plus, your go-to date night spot, Little Italy’s Herb & Wood, transformed into our stunning photoshoot location for Olympic gold medalist, SD native and our cover star Shaun White (pg. 128). In the words of Ron Burgundy—which can never be overused, btw—you stay classy, San Diego. Continue to be you; never change; HAGS! But, clichés aside, it’s been awesome to get to know you and to tell your story because, without a doubt, it is always worth telling.

COVER

Shaun White was all calm and smiles on the day of the shoot. Despite the traffic, the sun was bright, the vibe on set relaxed and, the setting was cool and quiet, minus some quintessentially cool music in the background. In suits and modern athleisure curated by stylist Sara Borgese, Shaun was pleased with each look. In bright red jackets and velvety sets, even his team was surprised at how sophisticated and relaxed he was—we joked that he should take on another side hustle as a pro model. Watch out, David Gandy.

S

Photographer Nick Isabella was behind the camera, capitalizing on the perfectly modern, yet creature-of-comfort-friendly atmosphere at Herb & Wood in San Diego's Little Italy. “Working with Shaun was easy and smooth. After discussing the concept the team had about the look and feel of the photos, we fell into a groove and worked together seamlessly. I felt like Shaun

trusted my creative ideas and he seemed comfortable and confident throughout the entire shoot,” added Isabella. When I sat down with Shaun after the shoot, he had just ordered some much-needed fuel—in the form of a loaded sandwich—to get him ready for the drive back home to LA. But as the conversation started, he didn’t even touch that sammy. It sat to the side as we chatted on and on about medals and the place San Diego still holds in his heart. At one point, I had to remind him to eat, but we were having too much fun talking about how my mom is one of his biggest fans and how skateboarding will be making its debut at the Olympics in Japan in 2020. It was about 4 p.m. when we had to hit the road—peak rush hour in these parts. But it didn’t matter. Shaun’s sandwich disappeared, and so did he, but not before saying “hi” to my mom. She was pretty stoked. I may or may not be the favorite child now.

ESCAPE The HOME AND GARDEN MERCHANT

THERESA RENFRO Credentials: Owner, en concordia

THIRSTY SKIN • Renfro began hosting monthly “Cocktail + Clean Beauty” events to introduce her clients to new products, while also getting to know what they like.

MY PREROGATIVE • “en concordia is like a big collage with one huge piece of ‘because I wanted to,’” says Renfro.

DEFINE THIS • “en concordia” means “in harmony.”

Located in Point Loma, Theresa Renfro’s en concordia is a home and garden boutique for consciously-curated products from brands who stay true to their vision and business ethos. “For me, creativity is honoring myself as [an] individual while attempting to connect with someone else,” says Renfro. In opening her shop, she was able to achieve a work-life balance without fear of failure or mom guilt. She says, “I’m proud to have taken the leap straight off the entrepreneurial cliff to pursue my interests and life’s goals and have that decision actually benefit my daughters, rather than it being a trade-off.”

ASHLEY GOLDMAN Credentials: Founder, The Gold Hive

MURAL MUSINGS • Goldman’s home office has a mural she handpainted herself based on a landscape etching dating to the 1600s. “It took me hundreds of hours of (wo)man power, but now I have something that nobody else in the entire world has!”

STAY CLASSY • Goldman prefers to stick with the classics instead of adhering to trends. “I try to avoid quick trends and instead aim for classic styles that will fit the old home and withstand the test of time.”

Inspired by the uniquely-designed homes of the 1970s, Ashley Goldman yearned for something similar when she and her husband purchased a 1915 craftsman bungalow in 2015. Ever since then, Goldman has constantly been renovating her vintage home. “We like the history of an old home and want to maintain that craftsmanship to last another century,” says Goldman. Goldman finds inspiration everywhere—from social media to open houses in her own neighborhood. “Creativity comes when I apply the inspiration to a project in my home for a unique end result that’s a blend of the things that I absorbed,” she says. 34 LOCALE MAGAZINE

ROOM REDO • “Simply swapping out a light fixture, hanging an appropriately-sized piece of art and reducing clutter can completely transform a room,” Goldman says. “Never underestimate the power of paint!”

The RESORT PRO

DARRELL PILANT Credentials: Senior Vice President and General Manager, Harrah’s Resort Southern California BASIC HUMAN NEEDS • “We’re all human beings and we want interesting things to do,” says Pilant, who said that this was one of the main ideas behind Harrah’s Resort SoCal’s transformation.

BEST VIEW IN THE HOUSE • Pilant likes to visit the connection bridge between the resort towers. “It overlooks the entirety of the reservation and has a great view of Palomar Mountain.”

SIP AND SWIM • Harrah’s Resort SoCal’s swimming-pool complex is home to the only swim-up bar in Southern California.

Early in his career, Darrell Pilant loved being told things couldn’t be done. That admonition made him into the visionary he is today, but he may not have gotten there without embracing creativity early on. “Finding imaginative solutions to challenging problems is probably where my love for creativity started,” says Pilant. Since 2014, the resort has not only added more rooms, but has been outfitted with unmatched amenities such as a 400-foot-long lazy river, a craft cocktail bar and even its very own craft brewery—and they’re still pushing for more. “We decided that an elevated level of fun needed a place,” Pilant says. It’s no mistake that Harrah’s is located in Funner, California.

The WOMAN WITH A PLAN

HALLIE LEITTER

Credentials: Director of Sales, The Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows A PIECE OF HISTORY • Originally built in 1946, The Lafayette Hotel has been a favorite among classic celebrities. After decades of shuffling ownerships, the hotel was resurrected and returned to its former glory in 2011.

OLD BUT NEW • “The ‘Yesterday Today’ brand really represents what we’re trying to incorporate here,” Leitter said. “We restored the hotel to its original state, ‘Yesterday,’ but bring the essential comforts of ‘Today.’”

Hallie Leitter believes that one of the keys to well-executed ideas is to light up a room and be able to talk to every single person in that room. “My creativity comes from watching people and their reactions,” says Leitter, who adds that great things flourish out of people who are genuinely engaged in the moment. This is why Leitter and her team at The Lafayette Hotel completely submerge themselves into any new event or concept that comes their way. With a clear vision and all hands on deck, the results are often better than they could have imagined. Of course, loving what you do is another key component. “When you love what you do, the outcome sells itself,” Leitter says.

PARTY OF THE YEAR • The Lafayette Hotel is where you want to be to ring in 2019! Head to Lafayette where you’ll take a time machine straight into the ‘60s. “We’re all so proud and thrilled to entertain our guests in such a mod way,” Leitter notes. LOCALE MAGAZINE 35

Credentials: President and Creative Director, Momma Pots ONE OF A KIND • All of Momma Pots’ designs are custom made. Tiongson and her team hand-pour and hand-paint each pot made to order, so no two are the same.

POT IT LIKE IT’S HOT • Of all the plants that find new homes in her custom pottery, Tiongson says that the ghost cactus might be her favorite.

ROOTING FOR WOMEN • Tiongson is particularly proud of Momma Pots’ HGTV feature. “What inspires me more is successful women and to be able to go after your goals and accomplish them.”

“I’m not one to be defeated. I had to do something,” Blaine Tiongson says after recounting a dark period in her life. That “something” was transforming her backyard into a lush park, leaving behind the rat race to explore her newfound passion for horticulture. Wanting to share the therapeutic benefits of gardening with others, Tiongson started Momma Pots in 2017. She finds creativity in anything, particularly lines and colors of the world, which translates into her pottery designs. Hoping that her art will help people be more conscious of Mother Nature, Tiongson adds, “Maybe they’ll be inspired to look around and actually see all the natural beauty that’s in their environment.”

The LANDSCAPE DESIGNER

SARA BENDRICK

Credentials: Landscape Designer and Host, “I Hate My Yard”

THE LUCKY ONE • Bendrick, who has a degree in Landscape Architecture, was chosen out of thousands of applicants to be the host of DIY Network’s “I Hate My Yard.”

ALWAYS SUNNY • Bendrick loves sunflowers! “They completely brighten up a space in a matter of months with their warm, yellow flowers.”

When Sara Bendrick asked the producers of DIY Network’s “I Hate My Yard” why they chose her to host the show, they told her she had two things: credentials and passion. Bendrick’s passion for art and nature is rooted in her early desire to learn by doing instead of watching. When she’s not busy transforming clients’ backyards into personalized oases on television, Bendrick conserves some of that zealousness for herself. “I have to give myself enough unscheduled work time to find my creative streak,” says Bendrick, whose passion came full circle when she renovated her parents’ overgrown yard into a cozy entertaining space. 36 LOCALE MAGAZINE

PRO TIPS • “Landscaping on a budget can create a lot of creative opportunities. You can use basic materials but arrange them or color them to make them unique to your yard,” notes Bendrick.

THIS LUXURY HIGH RISE IN BANKERS HILL HAS SWEEPING VIEWS AND STUNNING AMENITIES

WRITTEN BY: BIANCA KASAWDISH PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: WILLIS ALLEN REAL ESTATE

“The single most important thing in a home is how it makes you feel. With the accelerated pace of the world around us, to have a place where you can recharge and be thankful for all that you have been blessed with is a beautiful thing,” says Elizabeth Courtiér, Historical and Architectural Specialist at Willis Allen Real Estate. There is a unique charm about the refined neighborhood of Bankers Hill. Nestled between museums, elegant restaurants and quiet bars, the San Diego experience is just a stroll away, and just a short drive from the heart of downtown San Diego.

“[This is a place] where you leave your worries behind and enjoy the here and now. It has a serene, cleanlined modern feel and a fabulous open floor plan.” —Elizabeth Courtiér 72 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Truly, the redesigned space was created with the future owner in mind, ensuring that it would not just be a home, but be a place that complements and elevates their own lifestyle.

T

HISTORY LESSON Bankers Hill was home to over 8,000 people in 2018 and still has some of the original mansions and landscaping from when the city was developed in 1890.

SAY ‘AMEN’ TO AMENITIES With three-car, secure parking, a 24-hour concierge, a private foyer, extensive built-in storage and a storage unit, transitioning from a larger property will be seamless.

Traveling through the neighborhood, you catch a glimpse of the elegance of Old San Diego. Many of the homes in the area date back to the late 19th century, creating an established, primarily residential area. Within the historic community, on the 11th floor of Park Laurel, this single-story unit not only complements the neighborhood of Bankers Hill, but is a testament to the luxurious, high-end lifestyle this stunning high rise offers.

18-month, “down to the studs” remodel to be what it is now.

Often referred to as “Park Laurel on the Prado,” the stunning Park Laurel building features twin, 14-story towers and 94 luxury residences, all with sweeping views of San Diego’s Balboa Park. Park Laurel has raised the standard for modern, urban day living for well over a decade.

In the stunningly transformed condominium, enter into the open space and experience tranquility in more ways than one. Enjoy the open concept of the house from room to room. Whether you’re in the spacious family room or the master closet that was doubled in size to create a boutique experience, every inch of space was designed with maximum-use in mind. Aside from the charm, the home is as functional as it is beautiful.

The home features two bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, an office/guest room, a private elevator foyer and more. It’s urban chic, with neutral tones, light wood and light marble that brightens up the space and gives it a modern, airy feel. Courtiér describes the experience of this unit as similar to that of a high-end boutique hotel experience, with over 3,000 square feet and incredible ocean, bay and city light views, making it the perfect place to enjoy San Diego’s sunsets. The seller’s husband was the original developer of Park Laurel. He felt strongly that this location was the very best that Park Laurel had to offer given its “protected,” sweeping panoramic views. Originally designed as a Tuscan-style apartment with textured walls, earthy tones and a mosaic entrance, this property underwent an

Courtiér shares her client’s architect, Marc Tarasuck, and celebrated interior designer, Robert Wright, with Bast-Wright Interiors, who created this property to function more like a home than a condominium. Courtiér perfectly describes the apartment as a “place where you leave your worries behind and enjoy the here and now. It has a serene, clean-lined modern feel and a fabulous open floor plan.”

With floor-to-ceiling windows and a mix of minimal textures, the entire home represents refined luxury. The stunning city view is the focal point and can be seen in its entirety from almost every room. “High-end buyers tend to be quite discerning as they have often either built new or remodeled previous residences. It’s the little things,” Courtiér says. In this property, those little things take this unit to the next level. It’s the details like the hidden refrigerator in the master bathroom (perhaps for keeping beverages and midnight snacks handy), the mitered glass corner in the sumptuous master steam shower so that even in the shower you can admire the stunning view and the sliding

mirror, which allows you to hide that maybe “not so tidy” office, and then slide it open once more to catch the San Diego skyline that makes this place simply stunning. Courtiér’s favorite design element of the home? The visual restraint that the architect and interior designer used in making the focus of the space the jaw-dropping, dynamic, sweeping panoramic views. Whether it’s of the ocean, the bay or the skyline, it’s all right before the future owner’s eyes. For some, what makes a space feel like home is all in the details, while for others, it’s the larger statement pieces. Whether someone prefers the refined pieces or the traditional, grand furnishings, this Park Laurel location has it all. From the statement wallpaper and marble bathrooms to the sleek and minimalistic design of the kitchen, this condominium can be home to anyone. Truly, the redesigned space was created with the future owner in mind, ensuring that it would not just be a home, but be a place that complements and elevates their own lifestyle. But what is it exactly that makes a house a home? This is essentially subjective. For Courtiér, it’s the kitchen. “My favorite part of the home is typically the kitchen because that is where everyone tends to gather and celebrate. The open plan in this unit is ideal as it ensures that your guests can have a glass of wine with you without being underfoot,” she says. A home can be many things. For some, it’s a quiet escape after a long day. For others, a place to entertain night after night. For this home, it’s a perfect combination of the two.

Local Chefs Show Off Their Take on Seasonal Ingredients

Fall is a magical time in the culinary world, thanks to in-season ingredients that make dishes spectacular in flavor and color. To celebrate the season, we challenged six local chefs to create unique dishes using seasonal ingredients for a competition that highlighted their creativity and expertise. Some chefs kept their recipes and garnishes simple in order to let the winter ingredient shine, while others presented transformative dishes worthy of an art gallery.

Chances are when you think of Southern food, you think of fried chicken. While you can find a variety of chicken options on the menu, you’ll have a change of heart once you look over the mac ‘n’ cheese, and especially after you take your first bite of the Smokehouse flavor—the house favorite.

Movie Menu • Suckerfree offers One (Dino) Rib on their menu, which is a fun play off Chris Rock’s role in the movie I’m Gonna Git You Sucka.

Each mac ‘n’ cheese, while different in taste, has the same base cheese sauce and elbow macaroni. On the flight, you’ll find the same foundation, but with distinct tastes giving it a unique presence on the menu. The Smokehouse has barbecue brisket that’s been cooked low and slow in-house for six hours, blanketed in a smoked gouda cheese, a house-made barbecue sauce and cornbread crumbs. The Blackened Shrimp is made with red shrimp, delicious blackened seasoning and then it’s topped off with pepper jack and Parmesan cheese. Last but not least, the Lobster & Crab mac is made with lump crab, lobster claws and tails, and covered in a white cheddar sauce you’ll want to lick off the bowl.

That New New • Executive Chef David Mendiola will soon be rolling out a new menu adding more seafood dishes, including his “signature” Oysters Rockefeller. Cheeky Past • The restaurant’s building was built in 1910 and used to be an adult bookstore.

Executive Chef David Mendiola, a San Diego native, grew up in a family full of cooks and has now been a professional chef for almost 10 years in fine dining. “With all the effort I’ve put into my career, Suckerfree is the place that fits me the best,” says Chef Mendiola.

Brunch It Up • Suckerfree not only serves a supper that’s nostalgia-worthy, but also serves a Southern brunch every day until 2 p.m., so you don’t have to wait for Sunday Brunch.

Located in the Gaslamp Quarter, Suckerfree brings back all the nostalgic feels from the ‘80s and ‘90s with their old school hip-hop vibes in a rustic and urban setting. The art on the walls display movies and characters from those decades and correlates to items on the menu, like The Big Mick and Boogaloo Shrimp N’ Grits. It’s a place that’s all about people and food by making sure that customers leave feeling happy and satisfied, something that Owner Ron Suel has instilled in the restaurant culture. If you’ve been wondering why the restaurant is called Suckerfree, it’s because the owner wanted to create an environment where there is a “nononsense feel” and everyone is welcome. You find that in dishes like the mac ‘n’ cheese flight, where the flavors are familiar, but diverse in their own right. According to Suel, that was no mistake. “Suckerfree to the restaurant means that we stay loyal to the soil and do not allow suckers to penetrate our attitude, space or time.”

E

Every day there’s a new foodie trend sweeping

social media, and San Diego is always on top of the next best thing. Cocktail flights are probably most

common, but recently, foods are being incorporated into the flight presentation as well—and this mac ‘n'

cheese flight from Suckerfree Southern Plate & Bar is

a must try. Mac ‘n' Cheese is one of the most popular

comfort foods in the country, and an integral part of Southern cuisine and culture. Suckerfree offers the best of this classic

cheesy dish with a flight that features three different flavor profiles: Smokehouse, Blackened Shrimp, and Lobster & Crab. With

indulgent flavors and a whole lot of cheesy goodness, Suckerfree is putting their stamp on a Southern classic.

Introvert, Extrovert

• Lawless’ online personality is outgoing and extroverted on social media, but she admits in reality, she’s the total opposite. “I am actually a very introverted, private person and being ‘on’ most of the time does not come naturally to me. I am someone who needs quiet, alone time to reflect and recharge.”

Calling All Tomboys

Annie Lawless’ transformation is reflected in every aspect of her life, from the inside out. The founder of a successful juice company, she detoured from the family business of law to pursue her passion for nutrition. But her transformative journey didn’t stop with juice. The philosophy major decided that what she put on her body was as important as what she put in it. Her formula of confidence and consciousness paid off. She's on the fast track of success as CEO of Lawless, a cosmetics line always free of animal testing, carcinogens, toxins, and hormone and endocrinedisrupting ingredients.

A

Q: How did your health challenges lead to a wellness empire? Annie Lawless: I had terrible eczema as a child...when I removed gluten from my diet, my eczema went away entirely, and that was a big lightbulb moment for me that what we put into our bodies is directly correlated to how we look, and how we feel. This sparked a major fascination within me for health and wellness, which has remained my passion ever since. 102 LOCALE MAGAZINE

• “I was an extreme tomboy growing up...I didn’t get into makeup until I was about 14 after a fateful trip to the MAC store, and that was the turning point for me. I suddenly loved all things feminine, and have loved makeup, hair and fashion ever since!”

Nerd Alert

• Lawless has her bachelor's degree in Philosophy. “I’m a huge nerd! I still spend a lot of time reflecting on the nature of the mind, human brain states, the meaning of our existence and why we are here.”

Found The One

• Nope. Not a man, just the palette of your dreams. With 18 shades ranging from a light white to a matte black, Lawless has created the ONE palette. “My idea for this palette was simple—I wanted to create the perfect palette, the ONE palette that has everything you need in one place.”

“LAWLESS IS NOT A N A M E L E S S , FAC E L E S S B R A N D. W E H AV E A R E A L P E R S O N B E H I N D I T, W I T H H E A R T A N D S O U L .” —ANNIE LAWLESS

“I DECIDED TO TRANSITION OVER TO CLEAN COSMETICS B U T F O U N D T H AT EVERYTHING ON THE MARKET WAS VERY SHEER COVERAGE, NOT LONG WEARING, NOT PIGMENTED AND THE PA C K A G I N G L E F T M U C H T O B E D E S I R E D.” —ANNIE LAWLESS

Q: Describe your journey through the wellness space from cold-pressed juice to cosmetics. AL: I felt a big disconnect between my beauty routine and all of the chemicals in the cosmetics I was using in relation to how much I care about what I put into my body and everything else I do to avoid harmful toxins. I decided to transition over to clean cosmetics but found that everything on the market was very sheer coverage, not long wearing, not pigmented and the packaging left much to be desired. Q: With so many significant players in the beauty space, how did you manage to cut through the noise to stand out? AL: I feel there is a white space where Lawless sits in the beauty space. There are clean beauty brands that aren’t sexy, still have some crappy ingredients like silicones and talc, and the performance isn’t on par with the big conventional brands. Then there are the major players of mainstream brands that perform well, feel sexy and are packaged beautifully, but have terrible ingredients we really don’t want to be putting on our skin every day. Lawless brings those worlds

together. We create truly clean cosmetics with the feel, look and performance of the major conventional brands. Q: How do you use social media platforms to engage with your followers and authentically build your community? AL: Social media is an incredibly powerful tool in creating a real human connection with your customers. Lawless is not a nameless, faceless brand. We have a real person behind it, with heart and soul. Social media allows us to reach out and touch each other, which creates a relationship between the brand and our consumers, beyond just purchasing a product. Q: What advice do you have on pursuing your passion? AL: Get in the game of life and do it. Don’t wait for other people’s support and approval. Trust yourself and your abilities. A lot of times, following your passion may mean going off the beaten path or taking a different route than others expect of you. There is no guarantee things are going to work out, but if you don’t go for it, you will not even have a chance to succeed.

A former healthcare boss babe, Tracy Younger is here to break the mainstream medical mold with ALCHEMĒ. “I was a healthcare executive in the hospital world. I opened outpatient departments and wellness centers, but when I tried to bring in functional medicine, it was kind of laughed off,” said Younger. So instead of sticking with the status quo, she made the move to start her own business that did, in fact, integrate functional medicine. Fast forward to present day, and ALCHEMĒ, Younger’s medical wellness outpost, just celebrated their first birthday. The bright establishment takes a fresh look at medical wellness by merging functional and aesthetic medicine, with services designed to uncover and treat the root cause of the health problem versus simply looking at the symptoms, which is common in mainstream medical practices. Younger broke these services into two categories: “Inner” and “Outer.” Inner ALCHEMĒ treatments begin with cutting-edge, integrative medical appointments that assess all aspects of a patient’s life and environment that contribute to their well-being and health, as well as advanced laboratory and genetic testing. After ALCHEMĒ’s physicians review the patient information, they devise a personalized treatment plan, with services ranging anywhere from nutritive IVs to traditional Chinese medicine. Meanwhile, Outer ALCHEMĒ tackles specific aesthetic concerns because when you look good, you feel good. Think skin resurfacing, laser hair removal and more. She hopes to expand the fullservice one-stop wellness shop to different markets, but right now, you can find ALCHEMĒ tucked in Little Italy with an organic cafe and wellness boutique attached. “We really do some remarkable things. When I see people finding the root cause of issues, it inspires me. On the aesthetic side, I just want people to feel great. It can be a few small tweaks and it makes such a huge difference. I think people are surprised that it doesn’t take much to feel good. I love to see patients get so excited and feel their best,” concluded Younger.

The drive from Orange County to San Diego wasn't the best. I crept along, weaving my way through rubberneckers as they gawked at accident after accident. When I arrived on set, the first topic of my conversation with Shaun White was about none other than the traffic. He drove down from L A , w h i c h a d d s o n a n e x t r a 3 5 - 4 5 m i l e s t o t h e t r e k . We a g r e e d t h e t i m e s p e n t o n t h e r o a d t o a n d f r o m “ A m e r i c a ’s F i n e s t C i t y ” h a s g o t t e n w o r s e — I guess the rest of the world has caught on to how fine it truly is. Here's the thing: that traffic can't take away from the gorgeous route along the sea, so rather than letting the drive drag him down, Shaun maintained a sort of u n p r e t e n t i o u s , u n b o t h e r e d c o n f i d e n c e c o n s i d e r i n g a l l t h e f u s s . We s a w a g r o w n - u p v e r s i o n o f t h e f o r m e r l y l o n g - h a i r e d s k a t e r / s n o w b o a r d e r t h a t d a y.

Our interview began with the 2018 Olympics. America was, and still is, in a confused, turbulent place. With everything that’s going on politically, socially and so on, both then and now, the sense of patriotism isn’t at its strongest. But come time for the Olympics, our red, white and blue hearts burst with pride once we hear that national anthem and see our flag fly when one of our own wins big. That rang true for me and my family when we watched Shaun complete the most epic, spine-tingling, goosebumpinducing run, earning him an uncontested gold once more.

O

Looking back, it all boiled down to a bit of luck and a whole lot of hoping for the best. “I had never done that run before. I had basically taken this big crash training in New Zealand, and it put this huge mental block, you know, doing that trick again in training...I just couldn't get around it,” he recalled. “And I made a promise to myself after the crash that I wouldn't do that trick again unless the conditions were absolutely perfect. And so, throughout the season, all these things...kept me from doing this trick.” But when the time came, the fear disappeared, and he went for it. “I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna make it,” he told himself as he sped down the halfpipe, hurling his body high up into the atmosphere and flipping and twisting like nothing the world had ever seen. Shaun compared it to a fear we can all relate with: “Think about making a speech in front of the world, and you haven’t read your lines yet…you gotta wing it. You’ve gotta own it.” When the time came, the pressure faded and his skills and training took the wheel. “Right when I landed I was just so happy…but then there’s still the judges,” he said in all seriousness.

He held back celebrating too much at first, the anticipation building as he awaited the results. We all felt it at home, damning the networks for holding back for dramatic effect. “That was an eternity. That wait was awful,” he rolled his eyes. "But then that score came through, and it was just unreal. Once I won, it all just came pouring out.” The hunt for this medal started right after his loss in Sochi in 2014. “The whole journey wasn’t really a physical one. It was mental. I had the tricks to win in Sochi, I just mentally wasn’t there,” he explained. It became a “come to terms” moment for Shaun. He dug deep into the relationships in his life, be it with family or the friends he had lost touch with along the way, regaining focus on the people that stuck by his side through it all. As the momentum was building for Pyeongchang 2018, Shaun felt ready. But fate tested him again with a devastating crash only a few months before the games. “I remember when I immediately hit my face…and boom…[it] was split open and I had pulmonary lung contusions and my lungs were full of blood. I couldn't fly home because [the blood] was filling the lung space…that was a long recovery and frustrating thing and that really kind of made me question everything,” he said. It’s on par with the course to get an injury here and there as a pro athlete, but this was beyond what he had ever fathomed. His family assured him that if he needed to call it a day, there would be no judgment or loss of street cred. “You’ve got medals, you’ve got awards,” they would tell him while he healed. But Shaun wasn’t finished “I had come so far, and that was the real challenging point of the season. I can take upsets and losses to rebound, but getting hurt is just such a bummer.”

MOUNTAIN MAN • Shaun’s favorite mountain is Mammoth. In fact, at one point, he was part owner. “It’s so close, and it's like going home,” he said. READY TO ROLL • When he needs some music to pump him up before a run, Shaun is all about high energy and rock ‘n‘ roll. IDOL BEINGS • The other athletes who inspire Shaun the most are Andre Agassi and Muhammad Ali. In fact, Ali’s book was one of the first he read as a young adult. NATIVE KNOWLEDGE • When in San Diego, Shaun explained, the “first thing I do when I get home is go to Juanitas on the 101…it’s been there for ages.” He’s also a big fan of Fish 101 and Coffee Coffee. “Anything I can skate to or ride my bike to,” he joked.

“LA’s great, but there's nothing like coming this far down. If this scenario was up in LA, I would have never left.” —Shaun White

The scars are now battle wounds, remnants of a challenging moment that solidified how truly emotional and triumphant that win in 2018 was to Shaun. “I’m not glad that it happened, but in ways I’m just like, I respect that it happened. It put me in a position of ‘how badly do you really want this?’” he asked. “The one thing that kept me going was the fact that I just felt it. I knew I could do it. I knew when push came to shove I would step up to the occasion.”

T

The return of the king in January of 2018 was a sigh of relief for Shaun but a moment that gained him, yet again, legend status. Another medal and another triumph after a long, bumpy and painful road. The entire process from Sochi to this point proved he had found the physical and mental balance just in time. “That's why, at the finish line...it was such an emotional release,” he added. Now, what does the Shaun White do after such a massive victory? Fans might think he retreats to some glamourous den in the mountains to spend his days snowboarding just for fun while he sips on hot cocoa. Wrong. Shaun has plenty of side hustles that keep him busy when he isn't on the slopes. Between his philanthropy work with the Boys & Girls Club, taking ownership of the music and sports festival Air and Style, co-authoring his soon-to-be-released memoir with Neil Strauss and more, he is constantly on the move. But he always makes time to revisit his roots. Shaun is a San Diego native through and through. Growing up in the city meant sunny days filled with surfing on pristine beaches, skateboarding in parks with pros like Tony Hawk, hanging with pals and, of course, ample trips to the nearby mountains for some snowboarding. SD is a kid’s dream come true. “I remember being able to walk to school every day because it was such beautiful weather and I felt safe. I felt loved...I felt like I could do anything. Especially now that I'm older…you realize the things you take for granted,” he shrugged, but reminisced that “it was kind of like the perfect place to grow up.”

His mom still lives in SD, and he regrets selling the home he had right on the beach. It was just too big and lonely for someone so young, considering all of his friends held 9-to-5 jobs like accountants, engineers, etc. But San Diego beckons for him to return often, and he doesn’t resist. “LA’s great, but there's nothing like coming this far down. If this scenario was up in LA, I would have never left.” In moving to LA, Shaun’s discovered a few other passions within his creative wheelhouse that might surprise you. In all senses of the word, Shaun loves design, be it interiors or fashion. The interest developed as a result of his collabs over the years. Think Shaun White snowboards, Shaun White board boots, Shaun White hoodies and more. That translated into his WHT SPACE clothing line and now he has a bug for home renovation and interiors. He gets inspiration from everywhere and everyone, like contemporary designers and hotels he has appreciated in the past. At the cover shoot, he donned elevated looks that reflected his updated attitude. His fashion sense has evolved. It’s as though he belonged in Gucci’s new ad campaign alongside Harry Styles. “I try,” he shyly smiled when I called him a fashionista. It all stems from his signature red, flowing hair. Shaun’s desire to stand out amongst the crowd started when his schoolmates were bleaching and spiking their short locks. He grew his mane long and luscious, and the rest is history. Our time drew to a close, but not before I could bring up skateboarding and it’s introduction to the Olympics in Japan in 2020. I asked if he would compete, knowing that skateboarding is just as much a part of Shaun’s DNA as its snowier counterpart. “I am [thinking about it], and I'm taking it at a slow pace. Normally I just dive in,” he said with a furrow of his brow. “But to be kind to myself I was like, ‘look, you just finished this marathon that is the last Olympics.’” For now, we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, he’s enjoying life outside of training, like going to Cabo to join in on a buddy’s bachelor party. If we do ever meet again and he does decide to try for another gold medal, I would tell Shaun to go big or go home, but then again, he always does.

Antonio the Great THE “MAYANS M.C.” STAR GETS REAL ABOUT INSPIRATION, CREATIVITY AND WHAT’S NEXT

WRITTEN BY: KEANA MCGRATH PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: PLATFORM PUBLIC RELATIONS

Actor Antonio Jaramillo, currently known for his role as Michael ‘Riz’ Ariza on “Mayans M.C.,” sat down with us to talk about his roots, what inspires his creativity and what’s next. Jaramillo spent the majority of his childhood in an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico, before moving to San Diego as a teenager where he was able to attend school and work. Throughout his journey, Jaramillo always had a passion for the arts and theater, but it wasn’t until his mid-20s when he discovered acting. Since his arrival in Hollywood, he has graced the stage and screen in many memorable performances, and we can’t wait to see where he goes next.

A

Q: How did you start your acting career? Antonio Jaramillo: I started my acting career on stage working in the theater, not knowing that it would end up being my profession, that it would give me a sense of self and a wonderful life. Initially, I just saw it as a way to learn about myself and those around me by investigating human behavior.

Q: Where exactly would you say you find your creativity and inspiration for your roles? AJ: I find creativity in everything around me; in what I see, what I hear, what I feel, what I touch. In short? Life is creativity! People inspire me as well as discourage me, teach me and challenge me every day, making me a better actor. Q: Are there any projects in particular that have really excited you? AJ: Well, I have to say, being a part of such a cool and sexy show as “Mayans M.C.” is awesome! I mean, to go to work every day and ride a Harley Davidson? Also, working on “Shades Of Blue” with Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta was an amazing experience as well as working with Oliver Stone, Salma Hayek, John Travolta and my brother from another mother, Benicio Del Toro, in Savages was super cool!” Q: So what’s next on the horizon for you? AJ: Right now, I am fully committed and devoted to playing the role of Michael ‘Riz’ Ariza in “Mayans M.C.,” but whenever possible I will go back to the stage and continue to work in the theater until I get to Broadway!

Family Guy • Even though Jaramillo makes a living at playing bad guys and other serious roles, in his daily life he is very silly and enjoys clowning around with his children and making them laugh. Major Inspiration • Jaramillo’s decision to become an actor was fully realized in his mid-20s after coming across the writings of Anton Chekhov, and later Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams.

Running on Passion

• Sharoshkin has never taken any formal business classes. According to Sharoshkin, his success is “100 percent running on passion.”

Work It Out

• The Boxing Club is not just for boxing! The club also has Pilates, yoga, kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu, Muy Thai and spin classes.

When Artem Sharoshkin got on a plane and traveled from his native country of Russia to San Diego to attend his sister’s wedding, he was blown away by the city. Even though he was only 16, he knew he would return one day. A couple of years later, in 2004, Sharoshkin did just that. With limited English, he arrived to San Diego ready to find his passion and enrolled in classes at a local community college to pursue a veterinary degree and on the side, found a job detailing cars at a car wash. But it just so happened that The Boxing Club was right across the street.

W

When Sharoshkin lived in Russia, he had taken a couple of boxing classes. He enjoyed it and even had a passion for the sport. But where Sharoshkin is from, most kids start training at a young age and because of that, Sharoshkin never thought he would be able to train enough to work professionally within the sport. When Sharoshkin’s sister surprised him with a 30-day membership, he went in with the intention of simply training. He took a couple of boxing classes, and felt unimpressed at his performance. However, the gym also offered Muay Thai and to his own surprise (thanks to his own perseverance and consistency), he excelled in the sport. Within six months, he went from beginner classes to more advanced classes. Shortly after, 140 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Sharoshkin started sparring with others at the gym, and within one year, he had his first fight. The start of Sharoshkin’s big break happened when a custodian at The Boxing Club quit. In a pinch, management asked Sharoshkin if he wanted the job and he accepted. Within three years of walking in the door of The Boxing Club, Sharoshkin not only turned into a professional fighter, but also transitioned his custodial job into a full-time coaching position. His plate started to fill up between school, coaching and training, and Sharoshkin realized something had to give. “I was training for a huge fight in Japan and the workload became too much,” he said. “Degree or no degree, I’d be making the same amount of money.” After dropping out of college, Sharoshikin’s career skyrocketed; he become a professional fighter and a state and national champion. In 2013, the opportunity arose for Sharoshkin to buy The Boxing Club, and because Sharoshkin had climbed the ranks and served in various staffing positions, he knew the ins-and-outs of what the club needed. Sharoshkin believes his most significant achievement to this day is that he was able to “save the company’s name and brand.” His team worked hard to shift to a more customer service-based model. In the past five years, The Boxing Club has broken many membership records at their UTC

location and in early-September, they added a second location in San Diego’s East Village neighborhood. “Long story short, we’re here!” The Boxing Club exudes serious Fight Club vibes, complete with an Edward Norton painting. The clean aesthetic and high ceilings that go up to the second floor where the pilates, spin and yoga studios are housed, provides an airy feeling and makes clients excited to work out. A huge mural of Muhammad Ali greets clients as they walk through the door. Behind the muraled wall is an open-plan gym floor, with state-of-the-art cardio equipment and two areas for classes in addition to the ring that separates the space between them. The Boxing Club offers a variety of classes including boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, spin, yoga and Pilates as well as traditional gym equipment. Sharoshkin says he is proud of their culture in the fact that his trainers are “extremely knowledgeable fighters as well as fitness fanatics,” which allows everyone to grow in a nonalienating environment. As for what inspires Sharoshkin? “It’s not about the money. You want to be known for leaving a legacy behind. We try to do this with The Boxing Club, with our coaches, our culture and the charity events we do.” By the looks of his East Village gym, Sharoshkin is well on his way. LOCALE MAGAZINE 141
