PUT YOUR $ WHERE YOUR HEART IS

Dear Reader, If you’re more of a summer gal like me, then you start to panic when the sun suddenly drops at 4:45 p.m., signaling the start of chilly temps and drizzle. It may sound silly, but the winter months take some adjusting to for a summer-lovin’ blondie like myself. Over the years, however, I’ve found a way to come to terms with seasonal changes and see the bright spots in each of them. From cozy sweaters and spiced cider to the look on Grandpa’s face when he opens “socks” for the third time, there is truly so much to revel in! These pages are a tribute to the little things worth celebrating this holiday season and in the new year to come. As you thumb through, you’ll find thoughtfully curated stories of locals like Kris Kirkpatrick (pg. 110) bringing handcrafted art to life or Jina Javier’s (pg. 42) ingenuity in crafting a space with chic and timeless aesthetics. Not to mention, our charming cover star, Toddy Smith (pg. 46), who made his way on the six-second video platform we all fondly remember as Vine. Before dashing to the nearest department store, flip on over to our Shoppe section, where you’ll find five enchanting San Diego boutiques chock-full of authentic goods (pg.

122). Whether it’s perusing through Seaweed and Gravel’s assortment of vintage treasures or enjoying the flourishing outdoor sanctuary that is Landmark Plant Co., “put your $ where your heart is” and show the locals some love this season! A new year brings new flavors, and our Foodie section offers a little slice of everything. Relish in Il Dandy’s artful execution of Calibrian-inspired dishes, such as the cavatelli with rabbit and shaved truffle (pg. 92). Take in Morning Glory’s souffle pancakes and modish design, featuring iridescent windows and glossy pink accents—making for the picture-perfect brunch stop (pg. 100). Once the new year hits, I’m always itchin’ for a new adventure. From a road trip through the turquoise lakes in the Canadian Rockies (pg. 74) to a day well-spent on Cedros Avenue, our Escape Guide is sure to give you the travel bug. With all that being said, I hope the people and places that grace these pages leave you feeling grateful and inspired. I hope that this issue excites you, ignites you and becomes the bright spot during this season of togetherness. Here’s to the little things that make us smile this season!

Cheers!

The phrase “YouTube star” has taken on somewhat dirty parlance in recent years due to a handful of ill-advised stunts, comments and posts from some of the most (in)famous individuals to hold that job title. Still, even the staunchest social media haters would be hard-pressed to find much in the way of ammunition against a guy like Toddy Smith.

T

Sure, he’s phenomenally goodlooking, successful and widely loved, but he deftly carries all that without a hint of the entitled posturing that might be a calling card of some of his colleagues. During the course of a fairly long, sweaty shoot, Smith was nothing if not courteous, prepared and consummately professional. He arrives on time and sits through the oftentimes grueling processes of hair, grooming and styling without a single complaint. It’s this attitude that earns him copious praise from the crew, as his persistently upbeat vibe permeates the entire set.

“Toddy is the overall perfect canvas...I wanted to work with the natural texture and wave of his hair... We love wild,” says makeup artist and hair stylist Lexi Kleyla as she applies a pomade stick to his coiffed hair. Fast-forward a few minutes, and Smith is right where he belongs: in front of the camera, posing in a series of colorful, retrotinged set-ups. “Fun, fun, fun,” says photographer Travis McCoy, as he snaps away at Smith—who’s holding an ‘80s boombox over his head à la John Cusack in Say Anything. Friendliness aside, Smith is always keenly open to creative input. “He’s a rockstar at heart so he’s always open to a (new) aesthetic [and] trying different looks,” raves wardrobe stylist Teresita Madrigal. Rockstar is certainly one way to describe Smith, but it may be too small of a box to fit his technicolor personality and grand ambitions. Based on the experience of this shoot alone, it’s clear that Smith defies clichés, stays true to himself and always—always— leaves a lasting impression.

HOW TO MAKE

Kind Design in Mind Jina Javier, the Mind Behind Leo by Liv3, Talks Style, Simplicity and Self-Care WRITTEN BY: KERI BRIDGWATER • PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: AMBER THRANE

“I envisaged creating this escape and place of calm, but with a cozy at-home vibe as well.” ––Jina Javier

Expert : Jina Javier Credentials: Owner and Founder, Leo by Liv3 Step 1

• “What’s your business, and who are you hoping to serve? Hone in on your message and feeling that you want the space to create for your clients. For wellness and self-care, it should be warm and inviting—transseasonal fabrics like velvet and natural elements, such as living plants, help soften the environment.”

Step 2

• “Collaborate with like-minded creatives to help bring your vision to life. I followed Solstice Interiors on Instagram and knew I wanted to work with [Founder] Katie Gebhardt. In turn, Katie introduced me to the Moniker guys. During a tour of their studios, it was pure luck that I met Janie Rochfort, who ended up creating our mural.”

Step 3

• “Design should feel timeless. Don’t be so trendy that you just

become known for being an Instagram spot because what’s the longevity in that? Create a space that feels authentic and true to your style.”

Step 4

• “I’m a big believer in intuitive decisionmaking, but sometimes, it’s good to sleep on things when choosing key items like paint colors, fabrics and materials. And when it comes to decor, don’t be afraid to alternate price-points by mixing custom pieces with high street finds.”

Step 5

• “Consider incorporating extra feel-good touches—it’s often the little things people appreciate or notice the most. Our self-reflection postcards (a collaboration with Hatched Collective) that clients can send to themselves and the “Be Good to Yourself” decal on the floor are two great examples.”

A KonMari Method devotee, Jina Javier counts megahit book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by pro-organizer Marie Kondo as the source of a fresh perspective and the aesthetic inspiration behind her first solo business venture, Leo by Liv3. Javier, who co-owns and operates San Marcos lifestyle boutique Liv3 with her sisters, opened the designforward nail salon and wellness space last December. From establishing an initial concept and collaborating with designers to sourcing accent decor, beautiful spaces don’t just happen—they take time and dedication. The perfect balance of modern meets bohemian whimsy, North Park nail bar and wellness space Leo was a labor of love from concept to completion. Here, Javier shares, in her words, her top five steps in creating a meaningful business with an inviting and trendy, yet timeless aesthetic. 42 LOCALE MAGAZINE

“I got my start...making videos on Vine with my friend Scotty [Sire]. We would get off our shift bartending and then just go home and make stupid stuff together.” —TODDY SMITH

48 LOCALE MAGAZINE

It’s just past 8 a.m. in a slightly muggy studio space in Downtown LA, but T O D D Y S M I T H is ready to roll. Both literally, insofar as his seemingly boundless supply of energy, and figuratively, since he’s strolled in holding a Canon XF100 Camcorder. Then again, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, given that the 28-year-old Smith has made a name for himself as a prolific content creator, boasting over one million subscribers on YouTube and 2.4 million followers on Instagram. Smith’s fans respond in droves to his content, which runs the gamut from sincere video diaries and slice-of-life travel vlogs to irreverent comedy bits—all delivered with a 20-gigawatt smile and a sense of candid authenticity. But despite his rapid ascent up the new-media ladder, today offers Smith a chance to take on the most tested of old-media rituals: the photoshoot.

B

Before long, a thrum of activity ensues as wardrobe, hair, grooming and lighting are all set up simultaneously. Flashy outfits from upmarket designers like Gucci, William Lei and Menlo House are paraded out and probingly considered. Amidst the maelstrom, however, Smith seems serenely composed. Perhaps the soaring trajectory of his career has prepared Smith for this moment, or perhaps he’s comforted by the presence of long-time friend Darren Nuzzo, who’s looking around the set in slightly more wideeyed fashion. Nuzzo’s known Smith since they were both just two creatively-inclined kids attending Edison High School in their scenic hometown of Huntington Beach. Then, after graduation, Smith began splitting his time between attending college near Orange County and working as a bartender at numerous SoCal nightspots. There, Smith says, “I got my start...making videos on Vine with my friend Scotty [Sire]. We would get off our shift bartending and then just go home and make stupid stuff together.” But for the young audience on Vine—the then-nascent six-second video app—these videos were anything but stupid, and Smith had soon amassed over 330,000 followers on the platform. On Oct. 27, 2016, cataclysm struck when Vine’s parent company, Twitter, tanked the financially unstable app, disabling all uploads permanently. “[One minute] I was living in a house in LA with four other Viners, which was fun...then Vine died, and everyone panicked,” recalls Smith. “At first,

they were all trying to make Facebook videos. Then, people were realizing they could make money off YouTube videos, so I started getting into that as well, and I found this passion for making [longerform] content.” On YouTube, Smith found his footing and hit his stride, building a new audience brick-by-brick. Nevertheless, Smith largely eschewed the need to embody an over-the-top character to garner views. Instead, he connects with viewers by giving them time to become acquainted with his naturally buoyant personality. The majority of Smith’s most popular videos do not rely heavily on scripts or structure; he instead employs a naturalistic véritè style, that depicts their subject in his natural habitat—whether it be it at home or on the road, hanging out or light-heartedly goofing around with a host of fellow YouTube creators such as Jason Nash, Matt King and Jeff Wittek. “I am funny in real life, but when I make videos, I try to capture what’s actually happening with me and my friends,” states Smith. “It’s slowerpaced than a typical vlog that’s just cut-cut-cut... I’m not a stand-up comedian. When [the humor] happens, it happens, but if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. I’m not trying to force it. I want people to feel something when they watch my videos and to really experience the emotion that I’m feeling at that time.” In regards to the full breadth of his content, Smith can perceive a definite progression on display. “It’s like growing up with us over the last few years,” he remarks. “[It’s] the evolution of ourselves.”

Rockin’ It •Fashion-wise, Smith is always interested in trying different looks, according to wardrobe stylist Teresita Madrigal. She remarks, “He’s a rockstar at heart, so he’s always open to a [new] aesthetic.”

Back to Reality •Smith’s first experience with traditional media was an appearance on the reality show “Sweet Home Alabama,” wherein city men compete with country gents for the love of a Southern belle. Smith appeared on the show’s fourth season, but was eliminated just after making the top three.

One for the Books •When asked to choose a highlight from his book, Smith picked a diary entry from his travels to Thailand, while Nuzzo selected the preface and prologue as the strongest pieces.

Screen Sensation •Of all his YouTube videos, Smith says his absolute favorite is the latest installment of “Just The Diaries,” a semiimprovised comedy series in the vein of “The Office.”

“Before [the videos], I started writing short stories a number of years ago, and that’s where I truly found my passion for making stuff.” —TODDY SMITH

B

Back in real-time at the studio, Smith brings this ethos to life, gamely making his way through the gamut of outdated technology over the course of the shoot— twirling the cord of an old landline phone around himself and mugging while yelling into a chunky ‘90s cell. Smith is particularly taken by a series featuring a purple blazer inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. “I’m gonna post that one to Instagram when we’re done here!” he quips. But, never does he light up more than when paired for a shot with his old pal Nuzzo, both clad in ensembles that conjure to mind a ‘70s cop show duo. When someone jokes that Nuzzo is the brains and Smith is the brawn, he selfdeprecatingly chuckles along and strikes a Starsky & Hutch-style pose, employing his skill at taking a punchline to its logical endgame. “I’m trying to enjoy [it all],” he says with a grin. “But with each step I make, I say, ‘I’m not gonna be happy until this next thing is achieved.’ And then when it is, I start thinking, ‘what’s next?’” As it turns out, what’s next for Smith and Nuzzo is no prime-time mystery—the pair recently wrote a book together, titled “I’ll Give You a Dollar If You Consider This Art.” This latest effort, which came out in October, is a source of great pride for Smith, who sees it as a natural next step. “Before [the videos], I started writing short stories a number of years ago, and that’s where I truly found my passion for making stuff,” he says. “The creative process behind the book started years ago, when Darren and I were both experiencing different things in our lives, and we started putting them into action on the page. We were both going to school at the time, and we would talk about creating this, but we never thought it would really happen... So it’s been an ongoing process for some time. We have this email chain that started and sparked everything... We would send work back and forth, edit each other’s stuff and it all just grew from there.”

Much like Smith’s diverse output on YouTube, “I’ll Give You a Dollar...” is a kitchen-sink compendium consisting of poems, comics, short stories, diary entries and philosophical treatises. “Now we’re creating art in this new media world where everyone’s putting content out on these different platforms, from YouTube to Instagram, to Reddit, to Twitter,” says Nuzzo. “So we didn’t just sit down and say, ‘Let’s write a novel.’ We said, ‘Maybe we’ll start writing a novel for five days, then maybe three poems, and we’ll do comics for a week…’ It took us a while to embrace that we were so diverse and could take on a variety of different genres.” Smith agrees wholeheartedly, stating, “It’s how people consume media now. Everything is very quick. It flows nicely how we set this up because everyone today, myself included, has a very short attention span... But the book also shows a different side of myself and what I’m capable of. The stories are fiction, but they come from a non-fictional place about my life and Darren’s life. When [fans] read it, they’ll experience what we have over the course of our lives. It captures a human connection between two people.” No one can say for sure where said life-course will take Smith next. But as he flashes that perfect smile while standing atop an old tube TV in his slick leather drivers like a conquering hero, it feels like the smart man’s bet would be up, up and away. If you ask Smith, however, he remains everpragmatic about the future, joking about how the next generation of consumers seems to be moving over to new platforms like TikTok. In facing the winds of change, Smith knows he must also grow with the times. “When I think about the young kids who are watching me now, I remember that they’re going to get older too,” he remarks with a sly grin. “And one day, they will be the people in charge—the casting directors and company heads. Hopefully, they’ll remember me then, too.”

Saving the World, One Home at a Time

“Off the grid doesn’t mean rustic,” explains Ida Alwin, one of the owners of Baltic Sands Properties, an environmentally sensitive desert design company. The idea of fully sustainable homes was born in the winter of 2016, when Ewa & Jacques Marais came to the desert to visit Alwin, their niece. Today, Alwin is Owner and Operations Manager of the company, and Ewa Marais is the CEO. Marais is an interior designer whose work has been featured in many decor magazines and has designed homes for many years in South Africa. Alwin comes from a career in TV production in London. Her love for the desert brought her to Johnson Valley, California, where she built a prototype sustainable home.

“They’re completely solar powered… We use minisplits—one of the most energy efficient products on the market—to heat and cool the homes.” —Ida Alwin

“We were always interested in environmentally sensitive housing, but Ida approached us with a business plan,” Marais says. “My husband and I thought it was a really great idea. Who better to partner with than somebody who’s as passionate about it as Ida?”

According to Alwin, Baltic Sands homes are completely 100 percent off-grid, and each has its own well. “They’re completely solar powered,” she points out. “We use mini-splits—one of the most energy efficient products on the market—to heat and cool the homes.” In addition to their ability to control the temperature in individual rooms, mini-splits utilize air purifiers, she adds. They’re powered by solar panels, and energy is converted from the solar panels to the homes. Each home also comes with its own backup generator.

According to Alwin, Baltic Sands homes are completely 100 percent off-grid, and each has its own well.

“We were always interested in environmentally sensitive housing.” —Ewa Marais Home Sweet Home • Who is Baltic Sands’ ideal home buyer? “Because we’re not building in highly populated areas, they’re usually vacation or secondary homes,” Alwin states. “Or people who run businesses like Airbnb.” Good for All • Marais notes that as their company expands, they would like to build homes for people in various economic brackets. “In the future, we could build sustainable low-cost cabins for communities in rural areas.”

The first Baltic Sands home, JT1, sold very quickly as an Airbnb property, and JT2 is currently on the market at $799,000. Both have sleek, contemporary designs, an open floor plan and high ceilings. Two more sustainable homes are being designed in nearby Pioneertown, in addition to a third in Joshua Tree. “We have a strong vision,” says Alwin. “We want to bring off-grid, sustainable living to a mass market.”

SAN DIEGO BEST OF THE WESTS

For the

World Traveler Who’s Homesick for California You don’t have to travel to the Palace of Versailles to experience French antiques and tapestries, Persian rugs and crystal chandelier decor, as The Westgate Hotel San Diego offers all of that and then some. Situated in the heart of downtown San Diego, the 223-deluxe room (160 of those are kings) hotel offers an exodus to another world, waiting with open arms for the ideal staycation hug. And since that hug comes in a world that is decidedly French-inspired, it makes perfect sense that The Westgate offers a restaurant that is très chic. French-style architecture and decor spill over into The Westgate Room, where you’ll find savory beef tenderloin, as well as an array of seafood from lobster to Bay scallops paired with Baja Prawn. Delicious California cuisine with French influences certainly supports The Westgate’s emphasis on wellness, as stimulated taste buds and warm bellies are evidence of that. But The Westgate Hotel takes it to a whole new level with its AquaVie Spa. There are few places in the heart of a major city where you can find relaxation, peace and quiet, but the AquaVie Spa not only offers just that within its private walls, but also advanced wellness treatments. Since health is a theme for staycationers at The Westgate, you won’t be disappointed by the 40,000 square feet of “sleek custom-designed workout spaces” at the AquaVie Fitness + Wellness Club. Not only does it offer 200 cardio and weight machines, which eclipses most local gyms, but also spin classes, pool access and even a running track on the fourth floor, all of which allow you to zone out while you workout, and zone in on stunning downtown San Diego views. A GO O D WALK. . . SPO ILED? Ú Mark Twain said, “Golf is a good walk spoiled,” but he should’ve added that if the first tee is a short walk from your bed, golf becomes a walk improved. For the

Local in Search of the Perfect Staycation The friendly Westin staff offers a free shuttle service within a five-mile radius of the resort, and within that area is Carlsbad Village and no shortage of activities and food to keep you occupied. But that’s assuming you’d even want to leave the resort in the first place, as the Mediterraneanstyle hotel offers everything from entertainment to first class relaxation. After a day out at the beach or golfing at the adjacent The Crossings 18-hole golf course, you may want to take time to treat yourself at the Ocean Pearl Spa. Their healing body treatments are enhanced by products and methods inspired by the sea, relaxing visitors with services such as the Vitamin Sea Massage or the Mermaid Facial. And of course, what day would be complete without a world-class dinner eaten while watching a stunning sunset view? The 20|Twenty, named for the picturesque, near-panoramic view of the western sky, will have you warming up next to a fire pit while the ocean breeze kisses you as it blows through your hair. Locallysourced food is the restaurant trend these days, but 20|Twenty is a class above, proven by their constant rotation of ingredients and cocktails based on the best locally sourced ingredients. For the casual eater and drinker, The Westin Carlsbad also offers the 7 Mile Kitchen, which serves pizza and beer on tap—‘nough said. But the designers of this coastal retreat had Southern Californians in mind when they included a complete rental service for athletic gear. So if you want to use “forgetting your runners” as an excuse for not working out during your staycation, you’re fresh out of luck.

If Walls Could Talk THESE LIVING WALLS ARE BRIDGING AGRICULTURE AND DECOR FOR A NATURAL FLAIR

Stay Palm

• “I’ve always been intrigued by fishtail palms,” Wallace muses. “It’s one of those plants where you either love them or hate them.”

Plant-setter

• Wallace reveals the next trendy plants are Philodendron Monstera, Calathea varieties and Fabian Aralias.

WRITTEN BY: JANE ADLER PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NATHAN WHELAN

In the plant kingdom, one man reigns as king of the jungle. That man is Greg Wallace. Nearly 40 years ago, a seed was planted that Wallace grew into a blooming—eh hem— we mean booming business. Stemming from his own Southern California roots, Wallace took over an Orange County botanical business in 1980 and, what started as a simple side gig, developed into four decades of working in the field of plants, and his company, Instant Jungle, is still thriving today.

I

Instant Jungle is an industry leader when it comes to the latest plant furnishing trend: living walls. These installations act as living, breathing art that can complement any personal or public space. When it comes to choosing your living wall, there are three different types of applications (tray, module or TerraScreen wall) to consider after deciding whether the plants will live inside or outside. Design concepts and aesthetic are meticulously mulled over, and a method to frame the wall and how it will adhere to its new vertical home are picked. Depending on which system is chosen, a living wall can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to install from start to finish. Instant Jungle works hand-in-hand with landscapers

and customers to ensure that the wall is functional, aesthetically pleasing and matches its surroundings. This form of agricultural art can range in scope from a single wall to an entire rooftop and everything in between.

Greg Wallace CEO, Instant Jungle

“Plants create a nice environment and ambiance and they just really enhance [an area]. We stage with plants to soften things, make them look warm and friendly,” says Wallace. While the living walls still remain one of the top trends in the flora field, Wallace acknowledges that “architectural plants are really popular again…[they are] coming back and making a stronger statement because it also kind of ties in with the drought-tolerant trend.” If you recall, droughttolerant plants began sprouting like weeds with all sorts of species of succulents invading the industry. Wallace jokes, however, that “we’ve had rain and we have short-term memory,” so he predicts this trend may soon be watered down, so to speak. Wallace explains, “The cool thing is we can use anything that is on the property. We have different decorative containers. We have different ways to wrap [our plants]. We offer underplanting so you can do a forest, a jungle…we can create the whole element or illusion, whatever you want to create.”

A road trip

through the Canadian Rockies has always been on my bucket list, but it seemed so daunting that I postponed it until I was better equipped. Little did I know that there is something there for even the most novice of adventure seekers. From the turquoiseblue lakes and the towering jagged mountains to the abundant wildlife amid dense forest, this drive was undoubtedly the most scenic of my life. And if you’ve driven on the 74 Freeway in the summer months, navigating the stretch between Banff and Jasper is a piece of cake.

Banff Stay Ú A 90-minute drive from the Calgary airport, this little resort town is a perfect home base for exploring the surrounding area. Stay right in the heart of downtown at Mount Royal Hotel to be close to plenty of shops and restaurants, or for epic views of one of Banff’s most famous glacial lakes, experience the luxurious Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. MOUNT ROYAL HOTEL 138 Banff Ave, Banff, AB T1L 1A7 Canada 866.606.6700 | www.banffjaspercollection. com/hotels/mount-royal-hotel FAIRMONT CHATEAU LAKE LOUISE 111 Lake Louise Dr, Lake Louise, AB T0L 1E0 Canada 403.522.3511 | www.fairmont.com/lake-louise

Explore Ú Take the Banff Gondola to soak in a panoramic view of six mountain ranges from above. Pro tip: take the first gondola at 8:30 a.m. to secure a parking spot and have the viewing deck almost completely to yourself. The two most famous turquoise glacial lakes in the area are Lake Louise and Lake Moraine. Going later in the day in the summer (after 4 or 5 p.m.) is encouraged if you want to ditch the crowds, and since there is daylight until about 10 p.m. in the summer, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the sights. the many hikes around the area. We rented a canoe at Moraine Lake, as it seemed to be less crowded and just as picturesque. If you’re feeling adventurous, take on The Devil’s Thumb climbers’ trail—a 7.4-mile hike with an elevation gain of 2,897 feet—for an incredible view of both lakes at the top. If you’re like me and begin panting profusely at the slightest incline, the 1½-mile hike to Fairview Lookout at Lake Louise is good enough to catch a sight from above. Eat & Drink Ú If you’re a whiskey drinker, Park Distillery Restaurant & Bar is a must-stop. Be sure to try the Plain of Six Glaciers cocktail served with their housemade Park Glacier Rye, or try a Skoki Lodge, served with their Park Maple Rye and a scorched piece of wood on top of the glass to give it that smoky flavor. STARTING LINE Ú When planning your trip, note that there will most likely be no snow or ice in the summer, but driving in the winter is a completely different story. If you are not experienced in driving through snow, I recommend going from June through August. If you are going back to Calgary, you will be taking the same road back, so plan for stops on the way up and the way down. We did the Icefield experience on the way up and explored Peyto and Moraine Lake on our way down.

PAY THE FEES TO SAVE THE TREES Ú Be sure to pay the Banff National Park and/or Jasper National Park fees when driving into the city. It’s easy to drive past the toll booths; there are open lanes for cars that already have passes, so keep an eye out. If you don’t have your ticket on your dash, you will be fined. WHY SO BLUE? Ú As a glacier melts into a lake, it scrapes the bedrock, creating sediments or glacial silt that causes the water to appear bright turquoise and milky.

The two most famous turquoise glacial lakes in the area are Lake Louise and Lake Moraine. Jasper Ú Once you finally make it to Jasper, book a stay at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, or for a little more rustic feel, drive a little further north to the secluded Overlander Mountain Lodge. Enjoy breakfast at the Sunhouse Cafe before making your way to Maligne Lake, one of the most Instagrammable places in Jasper National Park. FAIRMONT JASPER PARK LODGE 1 Old Lodge Rd, Jasper, AB T0E 1E0 Canada 780.852.3301 | www.fairmont.com/jasper

The Icefields Parkway Ú As you make your way up toward Jasper, you can catch a glimpse of Bow Lake from the road, and Peyto Lake is only a short 10-minute hike (and well worth the stop). The Icefields Parkway is the road between Banff and Jasper. It takes about 2 ½ hours to traverse, but you will want to stop about every five minutes because the views are that amazing, and you might spot a bear like we did! You can’t miss the receding Athabasca Glacier as you drive down the parkway. Ride in one of the massive buses up onto the glacier to see it up close or take a quick look at the bottom. If

you aren’t afraid of heights, a little bit down the road is the Columbia Icefield Skywalk, where you can step out onto a glass platform separating you from a 918-foot drop. Both of these experiences require a checkin and tickets at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, so book in advance. Also, keep in mind that these experiences will take a few hours, so be sure to factor that in when planning your day. It’s hard to believe that just 10 short years ago, the only libation choices widely accessible to us were regular ol’ beer and the variety of hard alcohol we are quite familiar with. Times have truly changed for the better with microbreweries and distilleries sprouting up in just about every able town in America. Now, the variety has ascended to the pinnacle with the addition of Tura Alcoholic Kombucha.

I

The phrase “You can’t have your cake and eat it, too,” doesn’t really apply here, does it? In fact, it looks like you can have your cake, eat it and reap its benefits too. Tura is the perfect brew with the benefits of kombucha and the crisp bite you expect from an alcoholic beverage. While all kombucha naturally contains alcohol, Tura takes an additional step to create this certified organic, gluten-free kombucha that is four percent ABV and only 120 calories, making it the best alternative to beer since beer itself. Tura was developed by a humble team of kombucha enthusiasts led by Product Developer Annette Fritsch. Brewed in small batches

with a base of fermented tea, organic cane sugar and carefully selected symbiotic cultures of bacteria and yeast, Tura is the synthesis of a refreshing alcoholic beverage that is the embodiment of kombucha’s ancient origins and today’s modern techniques. Before the creation of Tura, Fritsch found joy in experimenting in the complexities of kombucha’s fermentation. As a thirdgeneration yogi, meditation practitioner, student of Ayurveda, avid kombucha drinker and curious brewer, Fritsch wanted to craft a great tasting, hard kombucha that would fit within her lifestyle and the lifestyle of many others living well. “While I have dedicated most of my life to fermentation, I’ve found that kombucha fermentation is one of the most unique, given the interaction of different types of fermentation working harmoniously together— all to create something refreshing and delicious!” said Fritsch. It’s that spirit and dedication that birthed Tura’s natural greatness.

Hungry for More BLACKTOP RESTAURANT GROUP IS BUILDING AN EMPIRE ON A FOUNDATION OF SANDWICHES AND TACOS

WRITTEN BY: BEN HITCH • PHOTOGRAPHED BY: BRIANNA MOSS There should only be a handful of things you think of when you hear the word blacktop: tetherball during recess, “shooting some b-ball outside of school” with the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and a restaurant group stemming from a duo born and raised in SoCal.

T

The brainchild of Craig Applegate and Clayton Wheeler, Blacktop Restaurant Group is the driving force behind an expanding collection that includes Board and Brew and Casero Taqueria, with the potential of more to come.

“It’s truly all about bringing the food we love into new, rad communities and sharing our passion with the world we grew up in.” —Craig Applegate and Clayton Wheeler

Back in Black • SoCal is truly the heart and soul of Blacktop. After Applegate and Wheeler both attended the University of Colorado Boulder, they returned to their stomping grounds hungry and ambitious. Get on Board • Though Applegate and Wheeler opened their first Board and Brew in 2013, Wheeler first fell in love with the Board and Brew sandwich back in high school. 90 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Though Applegate and Wheeler can’t remember the exact date they met (it dates back to diapers), they found success in their collaborative efforts after helping to open Rimel’s of Del Mar. In and out of the restaurant, they were friends and partners, and the pair had sights on bringing the best food to San Diego County all under one name: Blacktop Restaurant Group.

Blacktop Restaurant Group was founded in 2014, a year after the duo opened its first Board and Brew in Carlsbad Village. After the immediate success, it was off to the races with visions of a second, third and eventually a seventh. “The Blacktop Group had to be formed, because with any more than one, it’s a group,” adds Wheeler. There is no doubt Board and Brew set the foundation for Blacktop, and despite Applegate and Wheeler being called nuts for wanting to open a Mexican restaurant in SoCal, they added Casero Taqueria to both Bressi Ranch and their portfolio. And truly, Casero Taqueria was the goal from the start, “to open something that was truly ours, and now we’re pressing nearly 800 tacos a day,” they mention, calculator in-hand. Blacktop is now the mothership to eight restaurants with a mixture of sandwiches, brews, margaritas and thousands of tacos. It’s a team of roughly 200 employees that have come to form a family. As one of the fathers of that family, Applegate says, “It has been amazing to see all the employees grow on both a personal and professional level within the Blacktop family.” As the kitchens close and doors get locked up for the day, Applegate and Wheeler are excited about the future and the momentum they have. Neither could point to the number of ventures they hope to open. “It’s truly all about bringing the food we love into new, rad communities and sharing our passion with the world we grew up in,” they explain. Simply put, Blacktop Restaurant Group is focused on putting out the best they can, and when the time is right, perhaps another Board and Brew, a second Casero Taqueria or a totally new concept will be opening in your neighborhood.

92 LOCALE MAGAZINE

By incorporating clean lines and shapes with bright colors and textures, designer Agostino Sannino has melded classic Italian midcentury decor with a modern-day Art Deco twist. “We wanted to do something a little bit different than many traditional Italian restaurants and bring our culture into the design,” explains Sannino— and culture he brought. A modernized replica of the

Italian “Bronzi di Riace” statues stand boldly as a centerpiece, with plexiglass bubbles that represent the ones found on the original statues when they were pulled out of the sea. To contrast this piece of history, Sannino installed a sinuous neon electrolier to hover above a semi-private dining space, illuminating a long shelf of plants that resemble the Calabrian landscape.

AN ARTFUL EXECUTION

• Il Dandy’s brassy accents and futuristic design work in tandem to give this stunning restaurant a glossy and inviting interior. Sleek marble tables and blue velvet chairs hug the perimeter, offering the eye a pop of color. Let’s just say, chic is an understatement.

Sannino worked closely with the chefs in order to create a cohesive story and overall feel. “You don’t just want to have a business; you want to create an experience from the moment they walk in to the second they leave,” explains Sannino. The poignant clash between cultural and contemporary decor makes Il Dandy an aesthetically unparalleled masterpiece.

Seeing Red • Choose your spirit (tequila, vodka or gin) for your bloody mary, just be sure to order the Red Monster—a house bloody mix with lime, horseradish, shrimp, roasted jalapeño, Tajin on the rim and a stuffed olive.

All Hands on Deck • As a second location prepares to open in Las Vegas, Chef Alfie is still at the “office” seven days a week—as he says, “I’m not afraid to get in the kitchen and throw down with the team.”

“[Toast] was a blank canvas to really make mine, and there is just something so inviting about the farm life.” —Chef Alfred “Alfie” Szeprethy

Classic Combinations • The menu is designed to be super nostalgic, reintroducing the classics to millennials with a bit of a twist. Chef Alfie explains, “I’m a brunchy kind of guy; I like my options, and I love my breakfast at all hours of the day.” Starting from Scratch • Chef Alfie has been Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza’s Corporate Chef for the last seven years and was given a blank canvas for design when it came time to curate what is now Toast Gastrobrunch.

textures. The saccharine acidity from the syrup and the earthy, sweet crunch of the pistachio crumbles is sure to dazzle the taste buds of its indulgers. Finally, the density of the stacks of phyllo, still surprisingly light on the fork, plays against the continually softening brioche—the crescendo of this stunning symphony. Upon entering this brunch utopia, you’ll notice the space is walled with rustic wood paneling and accented with barn-red stools and wicker chairs accompanying the surrounding tables— all supporting Chef Alfie’s vision of a farm environment: full of family and good food. Naturally, why wouldn’t there be a 4-foot-tall cow grazing in the middle of the restaurant? Don’t worry, she’s fenced in.

When your mission is to brunch, brunch you will… and maybe loosen your belt. If you’re heading to Toast Gastrobrunch, it’s going to be an event. Toast’s menu is filled with standouts like smoked brisket hash, coffee cake cakes and (you guessed it) an assortment of incredible topped toasts. The bar menu is stacked with flaming coffees, bubbles and bloody marys to assist as you fork through your dish. And when it comes time for the big show, the house specialty, the coconut pistachio kanafee is, well, coco-nuts.

W

The coconut pistachio kanafee is a visual masterpiece that tastes as good as it looks. On presentation, it resembles a lilypad floating in a dark lagoon, boasting with forthcoming flavors of unworldly proportions. The black ceramic plate glistens with an orange blossom syrup as it soaks into the toasted brioche foundation. Perfectly positioned on top of the brioche are sheets upon sheets of phyllo dough (same as used in the famous sweet baklava), covered in a snowfall’s proportion of shredded coconut. And just when you think the tower of flavor may have reached its peak, a healthy crumbling of pistachio tops off this gorgeous house specialty, adding vibrant color and texture. The pastry is a classic and was not intended to reign supreme atop Toast’s menu. “It earned the title of house speciality,” says Partner and Executive Chef Alfred “Alfie” Szeprethy. The intricacy continues through the layers of phyllo as the ricotta’s creamy, soft texture proves to be the perfect bonding agent and catalyst for the pyramid of flavors. The orange blossom syrup enhances the dish with just the right amount of acidity, complementing the coconut pistachio kanafee’s tower of contrasting and savory

Toast’s unique dining atmosphere captures the “soul of the farm” through its charming furnishings and artful ambiance. “It was a blank canvas to really make mine,” Chef Alfie explains, “And there is just something so inviting about the farm life.” Beyond milk pails and egg cartons on the shelves, the walls include a few playfully painted avocados in a bit of a dispute, with one saying “I said you’re the good kind of fat,” a piece of toast confessing “You’re my butter half,” and, as any brunch joint should state, “You say tomato, I say bloody mary.” Needless to say, everything about Toast is comfortable, quaint and (most importantly) delicious. According to Chef Alfie, Toast Gastrobrunch is the culmination of “working extremely hard to bring something to Carlsbad that was missing—a delicious and unique breakfast experience.” It’s an environment for friends, family and recovery from the prior night’s proceedings, where the door is always open and the food takes you on a magical journey away from the complicated bits of life. You can’t go wrong with any choice from the menu, but only one bite of the coconut pistachio kanafee will prove why the house specialty is just that—special.

Happiness Is Handmade KRISTOPHER KIRKPATRICK SHARES HIS PASSION BEHIND CUSTOM CRAFTSMANSHIP

Forest Forager • Being from the Bay Area, Kirkpatrick is used to working with the best wood in the world. Believing in sustainability, he prefers to use redwood, walnut and maple, but only from trees that fell naturally.

WRITTEN BY: MATTHEW J. BLACK PHOTOGRAPHED BY: MANNY MENDEZ

Then, Kirkpatrick got the worst news: from a lifetime of extreme sports activity, his shoulder had such severe nerve damage that his neurologist told him he’d lose all movement between his wrist and shoulder.

T "

S

Kirkpatrick creates functional art that brings people’s visions to life.

Some years back in the Berkeley Hills that overlook San Francisco Bay, Kristopher Kirkpatrick decided he was going to take on a new hobby; he was going to take up wood shaping and create a table. If he was going to do it right, he had to find the right wood, so he bought a beautiful, thick slab of fine reclaimed California redwood.

Kirkpatrick made his way to sunny San Diego with his wife, and when he went out on his own, he could barely keep up with orders. Today, he chooses his clients very carefully. “My favorite part of every project,” Kirkpatrick explains, “is when clients call to evaluate me; I actually evaluate them.” His interview process is very important, as Kirkpatrick has his own visions, but he wants to bring others’ visions to life. “I like to hear their story, take their words and create something for them. The process is totally interactive, and it’s totally custom.”

“I like to hear their story, take their words and create something for them. The process is totally interactive, and it’s totally custom.” —Kristopher Kirkpatrick

Out of Office • Kirkpatrick’s studio is in a barn on a 21-acre farm in Valley Center, North County where he can run his chainsaw without neighbors complaining. If you want to be inspired by his studio, you may visit by appointment only. 110 LOCALE MAGAZINE

In the crossroads of his life— between careers, as corporate America fit him like a coffee table with stools—Kirkpatrick wanted to work with his hands, but that dream was slipping away. The slab of redwood, which could’ve mocked him, suddenly called to him, so he taped an electric sander to his hand, and for 10 hours a day, the vibrations between wood and man stimulated his nerves so much that he now has full capability in his entire arm. Now, Kirkpatrick creates functional art that brings people’s visions to life.

His most famous table style is also his most unique, as one look at his Blue Water Resin Tables will have you wondering how something so beautiful could be functioning art. Kirkpatrick learned about epoxy through his apprenticeship, and when he decided to pair it with wood cut from under the waters of the Panama Canal; he decided to recreate the waterway. The result is a table style that even woodworkers would say defies belief. “I get texts from people years later: ‘Just sitting here admiring your table,’” says Kirkpatrick. “It’s a very personable experience, and the client is very much involved. If you want your vision brought to life, perhaps you should get involved too.”

Her True Colors Are Shining Through SARAH GROSSMAN REVEALS HER BRIGHT VISION BEHIND HER BLOG

WRITTEN BY: ANDREA DIAZ PHOTOGRAPHED BY: MARY CAROL FITZGERALD Playfully positioned in front of La Jolla’s Favorite Color Mural, self-professed “art nerd” Sarah Grossman spills the inspiration behind her blog, Polychromist. “I wanted to share my view of the world in some way,” says Grossman. Pops, hues and shades are everything when it comes to artistic expression, and while her blog primarily focuses on the art of fashion, she draws enthusiasm from a variety of people, places and events. The dictionary defines polychrome as “painted, printed or decorated in several colors,” which perfectly represents Grossman and her creative process—one that she describes as being all over the place at times. She has been working on Polychromist, her colorful art fashion blog, for over two years now, and believes there is inspiration to be gathered from everything and everyone. Grossman strives to find the perfect balance between art and fashion in order to showcase them both within an environment, whether it is to find a look that matches the location or one that contrasts it. “All I want to do is showcase art here in San Diego and around the world and come up with designers along the way.” Grossman strikes a couple of playful poses as she jumps and

turns for the camera, all while talking about current projects. “I often find myself working on eight to 10 looks at a time, and right now, I am really excited for the upcoming fall collections.” Sarah Grossman is not only the name behind @polychromist, but she is also the associate director, special events and corporate relations coordinator at The San Diego Museum of Art. Naturally, being pulled in several different directions brings its own challenges to the mix. “Finding enough time to create constant content is probably the biggest challenge of all,” she admits. As Grossman removes her colorful coat to reveal a stunning little black dress, she explains the role artists play today in the era of social media. “Even though social media has become more popular, our museum attendance has actually gone up,” she notes, while illustrating that this has been a direct result of peoples’ presence online that has made them want to be present in person as well. “I even find myself planning trips around the museums I want to see.” As Grossman fixes her signature dark, long bob, she begins to gush over her new-found career and smiles—admitting that her favorite part of it all is the never-ending excitement of new projects, new artists and how far away she is from monotony.

Dirt by Day, Date by Night THIS FORD RAPTOR CLEANS UP NICELY WRITTEN BY: JAMEE LIND PHOTOGRAPHED BY: AKIN ODEBUNMI MODELS: KATIE BOZNER AND JEREMY GRINACOFF OF BRAND MODEL & TALENT AGENCY, www.brandtalent.net

Sitting in your office parking lot Monday morning, spotted with the mud and the toils of the weekend, is your customized Ford Raptor. You’re obviously upset about the dirt, but you can’t be brought down too far when you know what lies underneath that dried inch of sand. Your only actual worry is getting it cleaned before your dinner date later on tonight.

S

But again, you know that the dirt can be managed; your expectations, however, cannot. When you’re trucking through the dirty bliss of an open California backroad or zooming past the city lights of downtown, you need a vehicle as diverse and complex as yourself. You already know that the factory presets of a modern-day truck inhibit your free-flowing lifestyle and limit the travel capabilities of both you and your vehicle. That’s why you went with a customized KG Custom Ford Raptor in the first place, to hint at how bold you actually are compared to those around you. A customized Ford Raptor is considered “the best truck in the market,” according to Ruben Pina,

general manager at KG Custom. Built for both athletes and other high-end professionals, Pina notes that this is a car no one is going to be able to not notice, and that’s exactly what you’re going to need to impress your date tonight—just cleaned up a little first. “In the social way we live, it’s a car that really pulls to our attention,” Pina said, furthering on about how their Ford Raptor caters to the needs of every highend driver. From cold air intakes to customizable brakes, the KG Custom design brings its clients the ultimate horsepower. “You have function, aesthetics and aggressive styling,” said Pina. “Contractors, construction, athletes, guys that want to go surfing— it’s the best, all-around getaway truck.” The car wash is squeezed in after your last meeting, something you were never too worried about in the first place. You are a little worried about how the date will go, but more excited to see what’s in store for the night, with your freshly cleaned customized Ford Raptor making it a much smoother ride (and first impression).
