Editor's Note 53 Experts

WHAT’S YOUR CRAFT?

Fashion has always held a special place in my household. My dad, who has made a career in the industry, started the tradition off beautifully: by designing my mom’s wedding dress. Many years of walking with my dad around Fashion Valley (his second home) while he was dressed in his usual cleanly-pressed suits and perfectly-polished Oxfords garnished many compliments: “Your dad is so stylish!” “He’s such a fashionable man!” This led me to wonder something—what’s the difference between ‘stylish’ and ‘fashionable?’ Well, a quick Google search would tell you that the difference between the two terms is that being fashionable is having a knowledge of trends while being stylish is having elegance and class. But I thought it would be more fun to show the difference with an entire magazine. No matter what definition you prefer—being on-trend, being effortless or even a mix of the two— this magazine was created with you in mind. We’ll be introducing you to some local Shoppe Experts (pg. 53) who are making names for themselves with their incredible, handcrafted goods. And, in our Humanitarian Profile (pg. 92), you’ll also get to meet an amazing nonprofit that’s providing school uniforms to kids in developing

countries in exchange for their used and tattered clothing. Then we’ll be taking you for a tour of some of our favorite places to shop in OC, SD, LA and Greater Palm Springs in our Shoppe Guide (pg. 71). From there, we’re fueling up with Cafe Gratitude’s spin on a macrobiotic bowl in Meals Deconstructed (pg. 110) and taking a first look (and bite) at the incredible Louisiana Purchase (pg. 108). We’ll then meet up with larger-than-life muralist Delilah Strukel (pg. 130) and take a look under the hood of KARMA Automotives’ Revero (pg. 120). But, if that wasn’t enough of an adventure for you, we’ve rounded up some Sin City locals to give you all their tips and tricks for getting the most out of Las Vegas (pg. 142). To top it all off, three-time Olympic gold medalist, Kerri Walsh Jennings, is gracing our cover! The beach volleyball star shares with us her winning mentality, her work with p1440 and her ongoing journey to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. When it comes to encapsulating hard work, dedication and the summery, breezy beauty of San Diego, Jennings aced it (as usual)! As always, thank you, San Diego! I hope you enjoy exploring this issue’s pages as much as I enjoyed helping to create them.

COVER

Photographed By: Ryan Hensley, ryan-hensley.com | @ryan__hensley Model: Kerri Walsh, @kerrileewalsh | @platform1440 | www.p1440.com Location: Los Angeles, CA Written By: Annie Kim, @akorakim Styled By: Jane Arreola, styledbyjanelle.portfoliobox.net | @janellelyn Hair & Makeup By: Roxy, roxylook.com | @roxylook Apparel Provided By: Lululemon Athletica, shop.lululemon.com

“Do you want to spread out the medals and put London on top?” asked Photographer Ryan Hensley as he prepared to snap a few shots of Kerri Lee Walsh Jennings holding her 30-year beach volleyball career in the palms of her hands—three Olympic gold medals and one bronze. “No. I’m leaving room for Tokyo,” replied Jennings in a confident tone that could have been mistaken for as stern, that is, if you didn’t know the context. It was a breezy, sun-filled day at Hermosa Beach as the therapeutic sounds of the ocean waves and gentle whispers of the wind played as white noise well-known to every beachgoer. Jennings wore a p1440 swim top and black bottoms from Lululemon. With every pose and action shot—despite Jennings saying she felt bloated—you can clearly see the outline of an eight-pack on her long torso. Her Amazonian figure is the result from years of training to be the best in the world. “We’re never satisfied. We’re always trying to find ways to be better,” shared Roxy—an LA-based makeup artist and Jennings’ good friend— about their group of tight-knit girlfriends who are, this comes as no surprise, all incredibly strong and talented human beings. Roxy’s dark,

free-flowing hair accompanied her rambunctious personality, which kept Jennings naturally laughing throughout the shoot. There were several phases and locations to Jennings’ photoshoot. From the rope workouts to the kitchen poses to the beach, the Olympian was a natural, working the camera from all angles. The part of the shoot that visibly added another layer of joy to the room was the arrival of her husband, Casey Jennings, with their three children, Joseph, Sundance and Scout. Jennings greeted each kid with a hug, kiss on the cheek and an “I love you.” As Jennings was preoccupied with the photoshoot, Casey rushed to prepare snacks for the kids. “Dad, did you put broccoli in my shake?” asked Joseph, the oldest of the three. “Even if I did, you wouldn’t know,” teased Casey with a smirk. The loving interactions between the power couple and their adorable trio was a heartwarming sight to witness. Watching the Jennings’ playful family dynamic almost made me want to rearrange my life and start a family of my own, sooner rather than later. But then, I realized the giant kid that I still am and talked myself out of it on my two-hour drive home.

LETTER TO... KOPARI BEAUTY CO-FOUNDERS WRITE A LETTER TO THEIR SUPPORTIVE FANS

Hi Kopari Fans, Kiana and Gigi here, aka the cofounders of Kopari Beauty. For those of you who aren’t familiar, Kiana is our Hawaiian-born wellness guru who is the mastermind behind product development by day and mama to baby Kennedy by night. Gigi is a former stay-at-home mom of three, generous philanthropist and head of retail partnerships and global expansion for Kopari. We want to start off by thanking you for your unwavering commitment to our little coconut brand over the past three years and hope that you continue to follow along on this crazy journey of ours. Before we even had the idea for Kopari Beauty, our friends all thought we were coconut crazy. As female founders from two different generations, we connected over a shared obsession for coconut oil. We use coconut oil as a cure-all for everything—in our kitchens, on our kids’ skin ailments and for every beauty hack imaginable. Truth is, we are both so in love with coconut oil’s many benefits, and we felt everyone needed to know about it. In 2015, we launched Kopari Beauty with just four products with the goal to provide the purest, coconut oil-based, natural beauty products. Since our launch a little over three years ago, we’ve been committed to offering better-for-you products that meet our consumers’ needs in every aspect of their lifestyle, from skin care to body care, to our most recently launched personal care line. Our ultimate goal is to listen to our consumers and create products that help them maintain clean lifestyles. Because of this, we have devoted 2019 to expanding our personal care line, with the recent launch of our Coconut Toothpaste line as well as expanding our Coconut Deodorant offerings to three additional scents by mid-year. We have numerous other exciting products coming your way, and you won’t want to miss them.

Gigi Goldman & Kiana Cabell

We are also dedicating much of 2019 to giving back to the community that has given so much to us. We recently visited the Philippines this past spring where our coconuts are sourced to build a Kopari village for those who lost their homes due to natural disasters. Giving back fills our souls and will continue to remain a focus for Kopari in the coming years.

“I BELIEVE IN GOLD,” states a determined Kerri Lee Walsh Jennings, threetime Olympic gold medalist and one-time Olympic bronze medalist. “I really want that fairytale ending. I want to go out on top, and I want to go out being a bright light and a beacon in the sport.” Although everyone already views Jennings—who currently holds the most career victories leading with 133 wins and is possibly the greatest beach volleyball player to have ever played the game—as the brightest beacon in the sport, she is not yet satisfied. But, that is what makes Jennings great. This is the mindset of a champion, and her story will tell the makings of one. “ L I V I N G I N T H E M O M E N T. Only Ballplayers Here • The Olympian has always considered herself as just a ballplayer. “I hate it when people say you’re an amazing female athlete,” says Jennings. A Legacy of Her Own • With p1440, Jennings’ mission is to leave the game of beach volleyball in a better place than when she came in.

At the young age of 10, Jennings fell in love with the game of volleyball within the first minute of stepping onto the wooden court outlined in white. At that time, Walsh was sporting dirty blond front bangs and spouting lanky limbs from her slender, athletic figure. She had no idea that that was the beginning of an intense love affair, the kind that’s rarely heard of and would later transform into an empowering movement that inspires people everywhere. Today, people cannot imagine a beach volleyball court without seeing Jennings fly through the air in her signature ponytail braid, embodying all the elements of grace, fierceness and power, as she slams a perfect set down the line with a simple thumb-down turn of her wrist. Before the volleyball even hits the sand, the crowd will already begin cheering. Jennings is a volleyball phenomenon that inspires entire world-class arenas to rise to their feet every time she steps onto the court. The 6-foot-3-inch Olympian credits her family and support system for her success. “When I was growing up, I was very encouraged, supported and empowered by the love within my family. My parents and everyone I have been surrounded by has given me nothing but support and it helped me believe in myself and that continues to this day,” explains Jennings. “When you’re unconditionally loved and you feel that, it feels like it’s impossible to fail and it makes you braver. I am the product of that.” APPAREL PROVIDED BY: p1440 | Lululemon Athletica www.p1440.com shop.lululemon.com

After graduating from Stanford University as a student athlete, which was Jennings’ first big dream come true, and playing in her first LOCALE MAGAZINE 43

Olympics in 2000, the fearless ballplayer took her extraordinary volleyball skills from indoors to the beach. “I’m a homebody. I love the Golden State and being near my family. Beach volleyball allowed me to chase my big volleyball dreams,” she says. “It allowed me to partner with my childhood idol, Misty May, and hit all the goals that I was chasing indoors.” When asked how the duo continued their streak of greatness for so long, Jennings replies, “I don’t know to be honest with you… From the very first moment we knew what we wanted, and we wanted to be the best in the world and...to win a lot. And we never apologized for that. I think we rose to our expectations. I don’t think we allowed our expectations to scare us.” Throughout the years after May’s retirement, Jennings played with several talented beach partners but her goal of being the best in the world has always remained the same. If anything, the 40-year-old Olympian and mother of three is setting bigger goals to achieve and higher expectations to reach. Jennings is currently training to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo—and win Gold—with her new beach partner, Brooke Sweat, who Jennings describes as “rad and so ready.” “High expectations are a beautiful thing in my mind,” says Jennings. “I want to always expect and know that I have more in me, and that’s been my journey in sports.” In preparation for the upcoming Olympics, Jennings upholds herself to a daily routine that aligns her physically, mentally and emotionally. 44 LOCALE MAGAZINE

The Olympian is very attuned with her inner self and has purposefully set every workout, meal, recovery session and meditation practice to prepare her body, mind and soul to perform at her best during all hours of the day. Jennings completes two to three workouts each day. Her training sessions are a cumulation of morning meditations, daily beach practices, pilates and intense, twice-a-week strength training. “I like diversity in my training. It keeps my mind and body fresh,” she says. “I have both sides of the workout—the egocentric ones that feel more masculine and gnarly, and then, I have the Jedi ones where it really hones me and allows me to sustain the greatness that I want.” Meditation, nutrition and recovery—layers that form the foundation of Jennings’ ABCs—are a big focus for the dedicated athlete. “I believe to be great, you need to have your body, mind and spirit aligned,” Jennings explains. “Every day I talk to God and myself to figure out how I want my day to feel, how I want a certain practice or training session to feel and I try to get totally aligned so that I can live in my best and highest self.” Without fail, Jennings always starts her day off with meditation. “Every morning, there’s a moment where I am in silence and in solitude, just getting connected to my day and myself,” says the busy mother of three. Then, she has her morning celery juice and coffee with all kinds of good-for-you stuff mixed in and prepares breakfast with her husband, Casey Jennings— who is also a beach volleyball professional—for their three beautiful kids: Joseph, Sundance and

Scout. There is no shortage of excellence in the Jennings household. After breakfast, the entire family is off and running by 8 a.m. With years of wear and tear on her body, including six shoulder injuries and several broken bones, Jennings’ goal is to train more mindfully and with purpose, something she wishes she had done sooner in her career. “I started by running into brick walls and I did that for 15 years. It’s kind of the culture. We’re taught to suck it up and go, and I appreciate that,” explains Jennings. “I’m capable of carrying a big load. I just believe that I can mindfully carry a big load, now. I have better tools to lean on, instead of just grit and bear it.” Whether it be an everyday beach practice or the final match of an Olympic game, Jennings prepares for everything the same way. Consistency and meditation are important components of Jennings’ success. Meditation helps clear her mind and set her intentions. “The spirit within us is enormous,” she exclaims. “If we create time every day to sit with our spirits, I feel like we’re all unstoppable and we’re all infinitely capable. We just need to create that space within ourselves to know that.”

Throughout Jennings’ successes, it has been another dream for her to share her hard-earned wisdom for anyone else trying to achieve their dreams. Alongside training to win Gold in the upcoming Olympics, Jennings has teamed up with her husband, Casey, to create p1440, a digital platform and event series that goes beyond the lines of the beach volleyball court. The objective of p1440 is to elevate beach volleyball as a community and sport—from broadcasting matches on national television to fighting for higher wages for beach professionals—and provide people of all ages and skill levels with

access to the exact resources that are used by elite athletes. The four pillars of p1440— Competition, Development, Health & Wellness and Entertainment—are inspired by the power couple’s way of life. The pair has access to some of the best experts and resources in the world to help them elevate their game as players and as people. “Through p1440, a huge focus for us is to give people the access that we have to our experts. You shouldn’t have to be a professional athlete to have access to the best,” says Jennings. The groundworks of p1440 are all the layers in Jennings’ life that helped her develop and perfect the life’s fundamentals. “Everyone who is a master in their craft really does the ABCs well,” she says. “We are the creators of our lives. I [want] to inspire people to get down the ABCs of their life and to really customize them so that they can feel good in their days.” Jennings’ hope is that by providing the community with access to these various options that have been the roots to her success, people can rely on p1440 to figure out what works best for them so that they can live all 1,440 minutes of each day with purpose and win in their game at life. So, how are champions made? “Living in the moment. That’s where the richness of life is at. That’s where our power is at as individuals. Not five minutes ago, not a year and a half from now when I’m winning my fourth gold medal. It’s right now,” express Jennings. “It’s right now and what we do with it dictates how our next moment is going to be— and our next and next.”

Words have always had a way of helping Sarah Foster, Founder, Designer and Chief Foul Mouth of BAD BAD, overcome some of her struggles. It’s with a sense of unapologetic, foulmouthed appeal that she set out to create a jewelry brand that showed her “badass” attitude with simple explicit words and messages of encouragement.

Swearing Is Caring

SARAH FOSTER CREDENTIALS: Founder, Designer and Chief Foul Mouth, BAD BAD “My favorite design is the Desire bracelet, particularly the one that reads ‘JUST BE YOUR FUCKING SELF.’”

The uninhibited language used on her dainty jewelry presents empowerment to her and to her customers. Her jewelry is intended to be worn every day; she likes it to be reminder to persevere and be strong in whatever it is you’re going through in life—and all tinged with a tongue in cheek sense of humor that makes you proud to wear it.

“My very best work comes when I’m passionately frustrated about something whether it’s personal or something unjust in the world.”

“I want my designs to be worn by that single mom who needs something to remind her of her strength. I want my work to be loved by a group of girlfriends who all wear the same design to stay connected while they support their friend through a difficult time. I want the everyday woman who’s working towards her personal goals to wear my work to feel badass.”

Stay Gold • Much of Foster’s work comes in rose gold, silver and yellow gold, but Foster’s favorite is the latter: “[Yellow gold is] warm, reminds me of the sun, honey and youth.”

From Trench to Treasure • “In the beginning, I designed for professional athletes and brands like Nasty Gal and BuzzFeed. I also did commission work for multiple New York Times bestselling authors. I’m in the metaphorical life trenches with my customers and friends, so it’s easier and more real to design for them.” A Personal Touch • “I design for myself first and foremost unless it’s a custom order, of course. When it comes to creating from nothing, my best work comes from tapping into what I want to read and wear. It’s a personal process for me. I design to overcome my own internal struggles and fears.”

Yokishop’s philosophy stems from the Japanese term “mottainai,” a direct translation for “using the whole fish.” But for Designer Jeff Yokoyama, a veteran of clothing design for 39 years, it’s a business model.

Renew and Repurpose

JEFF YOKOYAMA CREDENTIALS: Designer, Yokishop

He creates unique clothing from existing products and materials that have been discarded in the market. Each pattern is created and each garment hand-cut and sewn in their Newport Beach studio with an aim to provide jobs and create a smaller carbon footprint. Selling directly to the customer as well as to a selection of handpicked boutiques in LA, Hawaii and Tokyo, their ethos is not only doing the right thing but also being different in the process.

Back to Vintage • “I get my inspiration from old clothing. This is a huge passion of ours as well as a huge responsibility.”

“I buy defected military shirts and jackets, from camo to khaki to just army green, and we repurpose those [materials] by putting different things on them from our other company called Mucho Aloha.”

“[My favorite item is] the beach towel hoodie. From the used beach towel, it becomes part of the body. Then I go to the Goodwill where they’re discarding tons of sweatshirts and purchase them for $2 a pound. I’ll use the sleeves, the hood, the rib, the zippers—I tear them all apart and add them onto the beach towel hoodie.”

Baked Goods • Over-production is not something that’s a part of Yokoyama’s practice. “We’re like a bakery,” he explains. “We make every day and then every day someone comes in and purchases something.”

Founder and Designer Analisa Jimenez of Marloe began designing leather items back in 2014 with the goal of creating the opposite of fast fashion. Believing that great design and craftsmanship shouldn’t come with a hefty price tag, she produces hand-prepped and handmade leather goods with attention to detail.

Simplicity Is Key

ANALISA JIMENEZ CREDENTIALS: Founder and Designer, Marloe

Each bag is thoughtfully designed and handmade in Marloe’s Bellflower studio and always produced in small batches in order to help reduce waste and to create unique items. A big effort goes into using the majority of each hide to reduce their carbon footprint. Whatever isn’t directly used goes into scrap bins that are then used for small leather goods and their interactive community workshops.

“Just like our products, the name Marloe is timeless and can be carried over though ever-changing styles and trends.”

“I’ve adopted the Danish philosophy of design, which is ‘Everything should have a purpose.’”

You may be surprised to learn that it takes Shoemaker Debra Hovel about 40 hours to make a pair of custom shoes. Her avant-garde style can be described as either Marie Antoinetteinspired, complete with bows, frills and embellishments, or veer to the other side of the scale with exotic skins and contemporary shapes that look like they’d be worn sometime in the future.

One Step Ahead

DEBRA HOVEL CREDENTIALS: Designer, Maker and Founder, Debra Hovel Footwear “I prize color, unique designs and comfort that make men and women want to stride. No mincing along for me. Strong powerful movement.”

Before embarking on her career, Hovel and her husband, Richard, had a design consultancy company, which meant she had always been involved in researching trends and colors. With shoes, she took that experience and turned it into something that she was able to create with her hands—but to be worn on the feet.

“My shoes are made to wear without socks— lots of color and happy combinations. Tan, happy feet in nice leather-lined shoes are my idea of great California style.”

“I love designs with references to the past but with something unique that will make people stop and ask me where I bought those shoes. I recently made several pairs for myself that illustrate this idea.”

She’s a Natural • “Nature puts all colors and patterns together and that amuses me to do the same with shoes.” Sole-ly Yours • Hovel never designs the same pair of shoes twice. Each pair is unique.

For the Athlete

• Philippa recommends the Sophia bikini from their spring collection. “It has a bandeau-style top with a strapless option and a classical straight option that is just perfect for the athletic woman.”

For the Blogger

• “Our summer collection is perfect for our bloggers and Instagrammers. With their tropical colors and flirty flair, these bikinis are perfect for those who want the perfect photo op,” said Philippa.

For the Lounger

Philippa Brenninkmeyer, CEO and Founder of Indigo Swimwear, just knew that she was meant to create something to change the world. “I grew up in the fashion industry, and I’ve seen the waste within it,” said Philippa. “Because of that, I knew I wanted to make a brand that reduced the waste and create a brand with a purpose.” After traveling to several different countries, Philippa discovered her fashionably ecofriendly direction in Australia.

P

• “The Eve bikini is the best type of swimwear for those who like to relax and chill in the sun,” shared Philippa. “It offers more coverage and creates a comfy but sexy look for all who like to lounge in the sun.”

For the Traveler

• “All of our products would work for the traveler,” said Philippa. “We carry something for everyone and every traveling situation.”

While in Australia, Philippa had the opportunity to stay in the environmentally-conscious community of Byron Bay. There, she not only learned more about the oceanic cleanup effort but also zoned in on how she could make an impact and further assist with restoring the beauty of the oceans around us. Thus Philippa decided to create a “swimwear [line] with a purpose.” Philippa spent months trying to find the perfect fabric for her swimwear until she found ECONYL® yarn. While using ECONYL® yarn, made from repurposed fishing nets and ocean waste, Indigo Swimwear creates stunning pieces so you can strut your stuff at the beach or pool while contributing to worldwide ocean cleanup efforts. This material takes items that pollute the oceans and recreates it into something that can be used once again. 80 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Indigo Swimwear not only helps with the oceanic cleanup effort, but it also gives back to the communities Philippa drew inspiration from. While in Bali, she was “introduced to the R.O.L.E Foundation,” a charity group and future partner of Indigo Swimwear that helps with cleaning ocean waste as well as teaches local children and their communities how to sustain an eco-friendly environment in their community. Through a partnership, the R.O.L.E Foundation, Indigo Swimwear not only partners with them to further educate Bali beach communities but also contributes to their 'Zero Waste to Oceans' initiative by giving a percentage of all

pieces sold to the Surfrider Foundation’s San Diegan cleanup efforts. Although Indigo Swimwear assists in helping reduce oceanic waste, it is a phenomenal product that has the perfect fit for all body types! Women can look and feel confident and beautiful in their new bikini while knowing that their swimwear is environmentally sound. According to Philippa, this initiative is fueling the future of the brand. Indigo Swimwear is in the works to expand its line to both children and men, further proving that, no matter what, Indigo Swimwear has something for everyone.

FOR SAMNANG TOR, THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS THE LAST STRAW

WRITTEN BY: MAYANDRA ROBBINS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: AUDRIANA SHOCKENCY

Samnang Tor Creator and Owner, Samnang Shop

These gorgeous, round Bulat bags are a great accessory to own. Each color complements any outfit one may wear.

One Step for Womankind

A girl can never have too many accessories. Plus, with beach season coming up, it’s imperative to have that one adornment that ties an outfit together. Follow Samnang Shop where you can find the perfect accent piece; Samnang’s Bulat bags are unique works of art that anyone would want to have. Everyone can attain the ideal outfit of the day all thanks to the creator and owner of Samnang Shop, Samnang Tor. With an outstanding sense of style and a desire to create and explore, Tor is an influential wonder woman to keep your eye on.

A

With a name meaning “lucky” in Cambodian and “happy” in Indonesian, Tor is the happy-go-lucky genius behind Samnang Shop. After escaping from Cambodia during the Vietnam War at a young age, Tor found refuge in Texas. By the time she was 18, Tor knew she was destined to create, explore and seize the experiences that life had for her. Seeking adventure, Tor had the opportunity to move to Las Vegas,

giving her the ability to meet new people as well as listen to the whimsical happenings of their lives. With a love for fashion, travel and adventure, Samnang made a point to experience and learn from new environments across the globe. During a trip to the magnificent Southeast Asian country of Balu, Tor found her inspiration. Inspired by the masterfully-skilled female artisans that populate Bali markets, Tor created a brand that would not only influence West Coast fashion but would also pay homage to the countries where she drew inspiration from. These gorgeous, round Bulat bags are a great accessory to own. Each color complements any outfit one may wear. Every bag is made with Ata Straw and lined with traditional Batik fabric, adding to the unique flair of the Bulat bag. Individually woven with locally sourced Ata straw, each and every Bulat bag tells a story of beauty, strength and resilience. Tor is the embodiment of a strong, trustworthy and independent woman. She has style and the ability to conquer whatever she sets her mind to. She is full of grace and exudes her confidence through each and every product at Samnang Shop.

• “I’ve always had the desire to be a positive influence [to] women and show them that there is more to life than what may be presented,” said Tor. She Is Beauty, She Is Grace • According to Tor, a Samnang woman is “open, trustworthy and happy. She is easy to talk to, she has grace and is someone you can look up to.” All-Rounder • Tor originally thought the Bulat bag looked like dumpling steamers that her mom would use because they were so round.

HOW YOUME CLOTHING’S UPCYCLING PROGRAM IS GIVING BACK WRITTEN BY: EMILY TORRES PHOTOGRAPHED BY: JOSIE GONZALES

“WE TAKE THEIR OLD CLOTHES AND TURN THEM INTO PATCHES, WHICH GO ON OUR BRANDED APPAREL. EVERY PIECE OF APPAREL HAS A UNIQUE, ONE-OF-AKIND PATCH THAT TIES YOU TO A COMMUNITY IN AFRICA.” —LAUREN WALLIS

SHOP FOR A CAUSE • Right now, YOUME apparel is available for purchase online, at local events and at pop-up shops. This year, YOUME is beginning to adventure into retail. Stay tuned! ALL AGES • YOUME offers men’s, women’s, children’s and babies’ clothing, so your whole family can get in on the fun.

A seemingly simple encounter with a young boy donning tattered clothing in Uganda turned out to be one of the most important moments for social good entrepreneur, Lauren Wallis, and future communities in Africa to come. This brief interaction was actually the impetus and motivation behind Wallis’ YOUME Clothing, a San Diegobased nonprofit whose mission is to empower impoverished communities while connecting people around the globe to a bigger story—through a unique, collaborative clothing exchange model that fosters long-term, sustainable growth in at-risk locations. As the organization grows, so do the communities that come together to create a better future.

A

94 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Born in 2010 (and officially established as a charitable organization in 2012), YOUME invites school children in impoverished African communities to donate old, tattered clothing in exchange for new school uniforms. The donated pieces of clothing are cleaned and processed into patches, which are placed on branded apparel that is sold to provide funding for community-led projects in the children’s communities. Those projects address both immediate and long-term systematic needs, like schoolroom expansion, clean water well installation and repairs, garden builds, teacher training and solar panels. “My friend was living in Uganda and working with relief and aid organizations and forming relationships in the country,” said Wallis, co-founder and president of YOUME Clothing. “But, while there, he sensed this dependency growing on well-intentioned foreign aid. People were dropping off clothing, but community members weren’t invited into the process. We came up with

the idea to meet the most immediate needs with school uniforms: a big barrier to education. In exchange for new uniforms, the kids would give up something old. They’re a part of the process. We take their old clothes and turn them into patches, which go on our branded apparel. Every piece of apparel has a unique, one-of-a-kind patch that ties you to a community in Africa.” YOUME Clothing works with partners like Enduring Communities and Voices Awake in Kenya, Uganda, Swaziland, Malawi and Mozambique to facilitate exchanges with approximately 200 children per year who swap out tattered clothing for new uniforms. From start to finish, the process invests back in the local community—at every level. “We work with a tailor to make the new uniforms in the local economy, giving back into the local area and country. If uniforms aren’t needed in the community, but say warm clothing is, we still purchase incountry,” explained Wallis. The clothing exchange is more than just local children from the community bringing their oldest and most tattered piece of clothing—it’s a celebration with music, dancing

“AS A SMALL NONPROFIT, WE’VE BEEN ABLE TO DO SO MUCH, CHANCE TO RECOVER • This summer, YOUME will be releasing new apparel designs. The proceeds from these clothing items will fund projects in Mozambique that will provide aid after the country was hit by Cyclone Idai and floods earlier in 2019.

YOU DO YOUME • Join YOUME Clothing by purchasing apparel online or at local pop-ups, or by connecting for local volunteer opportunities.

AND IT MAKES ME EXCITED TO SEE WHAT IT COULD BE WITH GRANT FUNDING AND A BIGGER STAFF.” —LAUREN WALLIS

and a shared meal, just like any other party! The process begins with YOUME developing a partnership with leaders of local nonprofits, churches and NGOs. An exchange will be scheduled and then the process—and party—begins! No step towards community empowerment is left out: through a partnership with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in San Diego, YOUME Clothing employs Somalian, Kenyan and Ethiopian women from the local San Diego refugee population. These women transform children’s old clothing into usable patches, which are sewn into one-of-a-kind YOUME products like shirts, sweatshirts and onesies. The proceeds from this unique apparel then go directly towards a variety of need-driven projects led and sustained by the local community and trusted partners. “We work with partners to fund projects that are needed most in that area,” said Wallis. “Recently, we repaired three water wells in Mozambique which gave about 1,500 people access to clean water.” YOUME Clothing currently offers men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, as well as African-made accessories like woven bags. Not only do the products contain a unique piece of someone’s story sewn into the fabric, but they are also created with eco-friendly, sustainable practices and locally-sourced materials. “As a small nonprofit, we’ve been able to do so much, and it makes me excited to see what it could be with grant funding and a bigger staff,” said Wallis, looking forward at the direction of her organization. With a simple encounter in Uganda that inspired the organization’s model and mission for connection and community, Wallis has stitched together a social good dream: a nonprofit that moves a step beyond a traditional aid organization— empowering all who are involved. • The Lobster Mac & Cheese almost didn’t make the menu. Chef Schwandt’s boss hated the idea of the dish. However, two weeks later, he got a text from him saying how much he loved it. He clearly must have tried it.

LO B ST E R M AC & CHEESE

• “The Lobster Mac was inspired by the San Diego Spiny Lobster season, which takes place every year in October,” said Chef Schwandt. “By adding lobster to mac and cheese, my thought was that it would entice a guest to try an ingredient that is very local and seasonal.” Unlike other versions that chop their lobster up and toss it with the pasta, Leroy’s serves the gently-warmed half lobster with lemon and butter still in the shell as a garnish!

• “Leroy’s delivers a truly locavore experience, and the menu presents diners with flavors that reflect the season’s freshest ingredients. We also offer a rotating menu of seasonal craft cocktails and a tap list highlighting some of the city’s best microbreweries!” exclaimed Chef Schwandt.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE • Leroy’s has a nice, casual vibe and is great for the whole family or a romantic night (or brunch) out! There is live music every Wednesday and Thursday evening starting at 6 p.m.

Cultivating Creole in Every Bite

FA L L I N LO V E AT F I R S T B I T E W I T H LO U I S I A N A P U R C H A S E

WRITTEN BY: ANNIE KIM • PHOTOGRAPHED BY: KAMBRIA FISCHER

Every day at 4 p.m., you can hear the swanky, soulful tunes from a New Orleans Jazz band playing from the ceiling speakers of Louisiana Purchase, one of San Diego’s newest Southern restaurants. Executive Chef Quinnton Austin, the culinary visionary and a New Orleans native, marinates the charm and character of his hometown into every item on the menu—creating diverse cajun flavors and creole tastes with a Chef Q twist. The restaurant’s contemporary French Quarter atmosphere and open loft layout allow a gentle waft of ocean breeze to flow from the opulent patio seating into the indoor dining space, fusing the love from New Orleans with the San Diegan way of life.

E

FOOD • Louisiana Purchase’s diverse menu offers a variety of cajun flavors and creole tastes inspired by the influences of New Orleans.

Chef Q describes the food at Louisiana Purchase as a freedom of expression, saying, “It’s exactly how I would do it back in Louisiana… It’s homestyle soul cooking.” There are three particular dishes—the Alligator Andouille Cheesecake, North Park Gumbo Yaya and Crab Cake + Chicken Skin—that will transport you to New Orleans with each flavorful bite.

DECOR • With a modern French Quarter atmosphere fused with the cool ocean breeze, you’ll feel the comforts from both worlds: Louisiana and California.

The Alligator Andouille Cheesecake is the main palate pleaser. The cheesecake is a masterful blend of wholesome ingredients and tender alligator sirloin soaked in buttermilk. It’s doused in a vibrant mustard yellow-colored crawfish cream topped with fresh watercress and cilantro. The North Park Gumbo Yaya is a chocolatecolored, dark roux gumbo with a lighter consistency that holds a smoky flavor immersed in a variety of creole spices. It’s filled with piquant picks from both land and sea, including crab, shrimp, andouille sausage and blackened redfish—all extra goodies from the Executive Chef himself.

PRICE CHEF’S ORDER • While Chef Q has a knack for creating extraordinary dishes, his favorite thing to eat (and cook) is a cajun ribeye marinated in a little Worcestershire sauce, olive oil and A. 1. Steak Sauce.

• Guests can enjoy creative handcrafted drinks starting at $14, and indulge in their Biggie courses ranging from $9-$75.

VERDICT

For a smaller bite with a big Southern taste, the Crab Cake + Chicken Skin is a menu item that should not be skimmed over. The dish serves two crab cakes paired with fried chicken skin and truffle goat cheese resting on a bed of rooted vegetable marinara. To top it off, their cocktail menu serves a collection of creative drinks with a New Orleans flair. “I want them to feel like you’re in Louisiana when you step in here—from the music, the hospitality and from everything we got goin’ on...,” explains Chef Q. “We welcome you with arms open wide. Feel the love. Eat the love. Drink the love.” 108 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Cafe Gratitude named this dish the “Whole Bowl” because “it contains all of the nutritional elements that one would need to get through the day.”

#Blessed • “I’m vegan, and it’s been an incredible palette for me to work on for the past 10 years,” shares Chef Ellis. “Now we have seven restaurants—yeah, I feel really blessed.” Appetizing Affirmations • When ordering your food at Cafe Gratitude, use “I am” statements such as “I am Radiant” or “I am Invigorated.” Love Where You Work • “We have an aspect of transformation within the work environment,” Chef Ellis says. “People come to work and they feel, ‘Oh, I can be myself here,’ and feel supported by the community we are working for.”

The bowl is a gorgeous mix of a variety of deliciously good-for-you flavors.

F

Foodies, rejoice! Cafe Gratitude is serving up a

staple menu item that carnivores, herbivores and

omnivores can all

agree on. The Whole Bowl is Cafe

Gratitude’s take on a macrobiotic bowl, which, according to Executive Chef Dreux Ellis, has been on the menu

“since day one.” “It’s been the numberone seller on our menu for 12 years!” Chef Ellis says. “It’s crazy popular.”

A macrobiotic bowl, otherwise known as a Buddha bowl, is a convenient and tasty way to enjoy a macrobiotic diet, which stems from the Buddhist principle of yin and yang balance. “Traditionally, a macrobiotic bowl has a grain, a legume, a pickled item and usually a root vegetable as well,” Chef Ellis explains. “And then a sea vegetable—in our case it’s sea palm. Then we brighten it up with our Tahini dressing.” The root vegetable gets switched out seasonally, typically with a butternut squash for winter and garnet yams for the summer. “We tried other things, but those seem to be the crowd favorites, so I usually keep that switch-out,” explains Chef Ellis. Cafe Gratitude named this dish the “Whole Bowl” because it “contains all of the nutritional elements that one would need to get through the day.” Full of protein, carbs and good fats, the Whole Bowl has “all the elements of a complete meal,” which Chef Ellis believes is the reason why people gravitate towards it so much. The bowl is a gorgeous mix of deliciously good-foryou flavors. When it first comes out of the scratch kitchen, you instantly smell the intoxicating, earthy aroma of the adzuki beans and a garlicky bite from their house-made tahini sauce. Once on the table, you’re greeted by an amazing collage of color. The rich greens of the sauteed kale and strands of tender sea palm are only accented by the bright, warm jewel tones of the kimchee and the butternut squash. Served with a choice of quinoa, brown rice or both, each bite of the Whole Bowl offers a new mix of flavors and textures. The smooth, creamy butternut squash mixed with the slight chew of the grains comes alive with the acidic tang of the kimchee. The rich and delectable tahini acts as

a binding agent for all the elements of the dish. Bright and herbaceous, the tahini absolutely blossoms when mixed with the flavors of the bowl, particularly with the beans, butternut squash and sea palm, which offers a lovely, reminiscent taste of the ocean. The Whole Bowl is topped with almonds and sprouts, which brings a fantastic crunch to the softer elements of the bowl. The Whole Bowl is an incredible representation of the food Cafe Gratitude serves. “I love food that is fresh enough to have been cooked in a home kitchen,” shares Chef Ellis. “We’re a scratch kitchen and we make everything on-site, but it’s not fancy food. It’s well-done, handmade food.” Whether you’re a die-hard vegan or you’re looking for a healthier meal, Cafe Gratitude has a beautiful, plant-based menu that could impress even the biggest of meat-eaters. But Chef Ellis, a vegan chef, encourages a plant-based lifestyle for a number of reasons. “Personally, the benefits of a plant-based diet are a compassionate lifestyle first of all, and the health benefits are very clear—the reduction of heart disease and other degenerative diseases—and often the unspoken benefit of a plant-based diet is that it’s so delicious,” he explains. “There’s this perception out there that it’s a limited way of eating and it’s actually a rich and vibrant lifestyle.” Not only is there dedication to creating delicious food, but there is also a clear commitment to their community. “I love the fact that we are creating food that supports a number of things. It supports regenerative agriculture, animal welfare and a general sense of giving back as opposed to taking away,” Chef Ellis says. “That’s always been our primary operational mission since the beginning and it still is today.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 113

The lithium-ion battery within every Revero model is what powers the electric motors, providing individuals with up to 50 miles of pure-electric driving range. Once the vehicle exceeds the 50 miles of naturally-powered electric driving range, the gas-powered generator automatically engages to create more electricity, allowing for nearly 300 more miles of travel. In instances of long-distance travel beyond 300 miles, the Revero’s lithium-ion battery may be recharged or the gasoline tank can be filled to proceed to the desired destination. Recharging KARMA vehicles is convenient: it only

takes an astonishing 24 minutes to reach 80 percent. Aside from the Revero’s vast array of ecofriendly characteristics, the customizable options available for owners are what set the automotive company apart from its competitors. Individuals are given the chance to design their Revero by utilizing KARMA’s interactive website features, enticing exploration and redefining the idea of what luxury electric vehicle customization entails. Potential owners are presented with a selection of stunning California natural landscapes, allowing them to determine which image resonates with their own unique lifestyle. The exterior and interior color options may sound familiar to most because, like KARMA Automotive, the available color schemes were inspired by the versatility and pure allure of SoCal. From the sleek “Crystal Cove” interior design collection to the breathtaking “Balboa Blue” exterior paint collection option, each color was thoughtfully-formulated to allow individuals to create a vehicle that truly exemplifies uniqueness and unsurpassable luxury.

deems as “an example of what customization can mean for KARMA.” The signature pearlwhite, layered glass flake exterior is utilized to encapsulate the moment sunlight gently shimmers through the tips of the ocean surf, while the ominously-dark carbon fiber wheels create a lively juxtaposition of colors. KARMA Automotive is thrilled to announce the renaming of their Moreno Valley facility. Now known as KARMA Innovation and Customization Center, or KICC for short, the name change is utilized to reaffirm KARMA’s core values as a company, highlighting both innovation and customization. KARMA Automotive’s West Marketing Manager, Laura Johnson, shares what the state-of-the-art facility has to offer, stating that, “If an individual brings in a purple Hermes handbag with the hopes of purchasing a car in that same color, our team will be able to color match that exact piece.” With the continued successes and exciting future plans for KARMA Automotive, the Revero truly proves to be an excellent fit for those seeking a vehicle that fully encompasses the SoCal lifestyle.

In a new market scene that is literally ablaze with a constant influx of new products, San Diego-based NANOCRAFT CBD has set themselves apart from others trying to make a name for themselves in the cannabidiol arena. Not only do they use top-quality, hemp-derived CBD products scientifically engineered for “the athlete in all of us,” but NanoCraft also sets itself apart with their dedication to philanthropy through their charitable organization, NanoCraft Kids.

“We really want to change the CBD market and our community with our products. And we have a number of ways we’re doing that with our innovation, our unique products and the charities we work with.” —Todd Erwin, Co-Founder of NanoCraft CBD

Going With the Flow • The idea for NanoCraft CBD was actually born out of Erwin and McKellar’s original idea for a business venture—they wanted to create and market CBD-infused coconut water. As they worked to develop and scale their business idea, they branched out beyond just creating a line of waters into a full range of CBD products.

“We really want to change the CBD market and our community with our products,” says NanoCraft CBD Co-Founder Todd Erwin. “And we have a number of ways we’re doing that with our innovation, our unique products and the charities we work with.” Erwin and his business partner, Stefan McKellar, founded NanoCraft CBD three years ago with an ambitious mission. They wanted to change the perception of CBD products and help people see the benefits they provide. They wanted to disassociate from the negative stigma that has attached itself to marijuana and identify as an industry leader in the health and fitness market. Simple education was one of their greatest obstacles—consumers needed to know that CBD products aren’t synonymous with weed. “We really want to stop people in their tracks. We need to be able to address the misconceptions and be able to tell people, ‘No, this isn’t the same thing as weed. CBD is different, and here’s why in order to get them to recognize the benefits of our products,” Erwin explains. 128 LOCALE MAGAZINE

H2-Oh! • NanoCraft waters will soon be available in three varieties: CBD water, CBD Energy water and CBD Recovery water. These waters are gluten-free, vegetarian, organic and non-GMO. They contain only CBD derived from hemp. What’s Next? • As the market changes to adapt to the widespread use of CBD products, Erwin and McKellar are hoping to get their products on the shelves of big box stores like CVS, Wal-Mart and GNC, as well as popular gyms and fitness centers.

THC vs. CBD • Tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol are the two primary cannabinoids that occur naturally in marijuana plants. THC is the agent responsible for the “high” that recreational marijuana users experience. CBD, on the other hand, is nonpsychoactive and does not have these effects.

“We work hard to make sure that every part of our user experience is excellent, from our packaging to our website, and of course the taste.” —Stefan McKellar, Co-Founder of NanoCraft CBD

By harnessing the health benefits that CBD offers, without the “high” that THC provides, the pair believes they can blend science and nature to benefit everyone’s wellbeing. Their line is unique and varied, including soft gels, enhanced water, supplements, pain sticks and drops. This variation promises a safe introduction to CBD products that new users can be comfortable with as well as a range that those who are more familiar can explore. “What we want people to see is that they’ve got options. The hope is that people can use CBD to reduce their dependence on the drugs that do harm. You hear of people getting hooked on Xanax and opioids—these people are just looking for relief. And while everybody is different and nothing is guaranteed, some people are seeing great results using CBD without the unwanted side effects,” McKellar says. While promoting health benefits and fostering education and understanding around CBD is very important for Erwin and McKellar, they also aim to be a leading brand in the CBD market that consumers could trust. “We like to think of ourselves as the Nike of the CBD market,” notes McKellar. “We are a top-tier brand that provides a top-quality product. We work hard to make sure that every part of our user experience is excellent, from our packaging to our website, and of course the taste.” In order to build trust in their brand, NanoCraft CBD makes science-based information readily available to consumers via data-based blogs and research on their website. NanoCraft CBD also

heads the second-largest CBD education group on Facebook. Additionally, the company has dedicated itself to philanthropy, contributing $1 from each product sold to charitable organizations, such as the Mauli Ola Foundation and Child Hunger Sucks, through NanoCraft Kids. “We wanted to make sure that we could put something back into the community with what we were doing. The two organizations that we work with are really focused on helping out kids and that’s really important,” McKellar explains. “We’ve already been able to give about $10,000 [through our charitable organization] so far this year. We’re hoping to reach our big goal of being able to donate $100,000 by the end of the year. We’re on track to reach that and I really think we can.” While the popularity of CBD continued to grow rapidly over the last several years, the use of CBD health products by athletes and other individuals is still under question. NanoCraft CBD is doing their part to bring awareness and promote the benefits that CBD promises. Fortunately, the athletics industry is making strides by connecting NanoCraft CBD sponsorship agreements with athletes in a variety of sports including surfing, tennis and golf. “There were times when we were literally bootstrapped, trying to make this happen. We had to keep pushing through all of that. And we couldn’t do it without the team we have here,” says McKellar. “We’ve been able to surround ourselves with people who have our same vision. And we’re so lucky for that—none of this would be possible without them.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 129

Hey There, Delilah

WANDERLUST • Though Strukel was born and raised in San Diego, she got her name “Wandering Delilah” from traveling across the country with her parents at a young age.

WE’RE BRUSHING UP WITH MURALIST DELILAH STRUKEL

WRITTEN BY: EMILY TORRES PHOTOGRAPHED BY: BHADRI KUBENDRAN Everyone loves a good snapshot in front of a mural— we’re guilty as charged. Not only are these large-scale art projects beautiful, but they also tell a bigger story. What, then, is the story, and who is telling it? In San Diego, that storyteller is Delilah Strukel. A young San Diego State University student and burgeoning entrepreneur, Strukel is the painter and muralist behind some of your favorite spots, including murals and backdrops at Eco Chic Salon, Vin de Syrah, Bivouac Ciderworks, Devil’s Dozen Donuts, Flower Hill Promenade and Modern Love Group’s famed parties. “I have been an artist my whole life,” said Strukel, about her start in the art world. “I always gravitated towards being creative.” Strukel always favored art classes over any other subject and started to create oil paintings at a young age. When she was in high school, this gravitation towards art also began to tug her towards an entrepreneurial venture. She started to sell oil paintings to friends and family, and when she began college, she started to display her canvas works at galleries and small shows in the city. Just less than two years ago, Strukel experimented with her first large-scale mural.

130 LOCALE MAGAZINE

“I enjoy working in environments that are social, where people pass by and can see me working,” explained Strukel, referring to her murals. “People get more connected to the piece when they meet the artist, and they appreciate the process more when they have seen it in person.” Evident in her often feminine depictions of plants, cow skulls and other natural elements, Strukel is most inspired by nature and travel. Her interest in both travel and nature dates far back; when she was just nine years old, she went on a cross-country road trip, which sparked both her wanderlust and her affinity to the natural world. Now, she frequents spots like Joshua Tree, Anza Borrego, Salvation Mountain, Ocean Beach and Encinitas for surges of inspiration for paintings that showcase both life and death (though she insists she wants viewers to interpret and connect with work independent of her intended symbolism). When Strukel looks towards her growing, artistic career, she envisions a life where she travels and creates beautiful work in new places. “I’m always trying to expand as an artist, but I want to stay true to myself,” said Strukel. “I want to be open to growth and new ideas.”

Considered a true visionary, Hugh Kaptur played a significant part in the development of the architectural design for the Palm Springs community from the late 1950s through the 2000s. His designs are fluid and organic with features that add protection from the harsh elements of the intense desert heat. This first major exhibition of Kaptur’s work reveals his impact on midcentury architecture, and lectures and tours will complement this exhibition which includes Kaptur’s architectural models, photos, slides and other materials.
