Blanket Statement With Pop Up Picnic Co., Bites, Beverages and Beauty Are Included

editor's note These past few months have felt far from normal. Shops are closed, restaurants, stadiums and beaches are empty and our couches are getting a whole lot of use. While our anxieties may be high and our morale low, we look forward to the day we can host a backyard barbeque with our closest friends, sip summer cocktails at our favorite bar and get that much-needed haircut. But in the midst of this crisis, one thing has become abundantly clear: us SoCal locals are a resilient bunch. From drive-by birthday parades to supporting local restaurants with nightly take-out orders, we continue to find ways to make our neighbors smile. With that said, we’ve created a spectacular Shoppe Guide full of inspiring entrepreneurs, nifty gifts and gadgets and springtime essentials that will have you swooning. The people and products that grace these pages are not only authentic, but they hold a special place in the San Diego community. Among them is a denim darling who repurposes an

American staple (pg. 55), a local shop owner who is bringing print back in style (pg. 60) and a gal who’s mastered the art of the quintessential picnic (pg. 112). Gracing the cover of this issue is English actor Clive Standen. Aside from his studly stature and ability to do his own stunts, you’ll find a father of three and an individual who embraces modern masculinity (pg. 32). Inspiration is everywhere, my friends—especially in our local communities. I hope these pages ignite a sense of resilience and creativity during these uncertain times. Whether you spot the perfect gift for your bestie, discover a new restaurant or find yourself planning the perfect post-quarantine getaway, this issue is here to make you smile and look forward to the good days that lie ahead. Meanwhile, here’s to hoping that haircut happens sooner than later. Happy Reading!

Yucca Valley

The day of Clive Standen’s photoshoot began with blue skies, brisk, 45-degree weather and a dirt road off the beaten path. Music filled the airstream at The Desert Yacht Club, as hair and makeup stylist Aiprll Patino and stylist Neil Cohen got Standen photo-ready for the day. The group, accompanied by Pippo the resident cat, walked out to the Stargazing Boat, parked on the peak of a hill, where Standen was ready to soak up the sun—and the spotlight. Leading Man “I am in the middle of Joshua Tree, shooting in the beautiful surroundings, and I’ve got Mumford & Sons playing in the background with some lovely people and great clothes,” said Standen. “This is pretty much the perfect day!” An Idyllic Setting The Desert Yacht Club was an incredible location for the photoshoot, not only for its plethora of backdrops and helpful staff, but for its natural surroundings as well. “I love how surreal this location is,” Patino said. “It’s gorgeous— the clouds, the sky, the landscape—it’s beautiful, it’s bizarre, it’s amazing.” Nothing But Blue Skies “Clive was so kind to everyone and eager to try different looks, locations and poses,” LOCALE’s production coordinator, Lauren Lewellen, said. “When the production team arrived the night before, it was pretty windy, but we woke up to blue skies. It’s been a perfect day with the perfect team and the perfect subject.” Desert Daydream “Anytime you’re shooting out near Joshua Tree or Yucca Valley, I’ve always felt that it was a dreamland,” photographer Tae Kwon said as he was setting up between shoot locations. “You can just do whatever.” And with a subject like Standen, who was eager to climb around and experiment, the results were nothing short of incredible.

PLANTING A SEED

Estancia La Jolla has over 75 different succulents and plants on our 10-acre property, and we provide guests with guided garden tours! Upon check out, all guests receive a complimentary basil seed packet, so they can take a piece of Estancia home with them.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Ò NINE-TEN Restaurant & Bar at the Grande Colonial Hotel is one of my favorite people-watching spots in La Jolla. Everything from their burgers to their Rueben sandwiches are delicious, and it’s so much fun to take out-oftowners here. Sit outside on their patio and order off their fabulous wine list. What more do you need than a bottle of rosé and your favorite visitors?

COMMUNITY COLLABS

Ò The partnership aspect of my role is actually the most fun. The focus of our #SelfCareSunday program, which is a series where we partner with a local fitness studio each month, is to put on a day that includes an outdoor fitness class, complimentary cocktails and snacks from amazing local vendors. Proud studio partners so far have included F45 La Jolla, The Boxing Club, CorePower, Club Pilates and YogaSix.

THAI THIS!

Ò Bangkok Bay Solana Beach is one of those places where you will crave their food on a weekly basis. This hidden and tucked away restaurant in a random strip mall off Highway 101 is home to the best Thai food you will have in all of San Diego! Try the summer rolls with tofu and peanut sauce and cashew chicken! Order extra peanut sauce; trust me on that one. www.bangkok-bay.com

TE AMO, TEQUILA

Ò At Death by Tequila, every drink and cocktail comes with a metallic straw, and they take great pride in showcasing all the awesome local farms they work with on a rotating basis. They pay close attention to every detail and to the story they tell, which makes a marketing gal like me extremely impressed! www.deathbytequila.com

WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES 5

Ò Catania has one of the best happy hours in all of La Jolla; you can’t beat a $9 Rosa Rosa Spritz (think Aperol Spritz with gin and rosemary) while overlooking the dreamy La Jolla Cove at sunset. They also have a great lunch special that includes pizza or pasta and a salad for just $16! www.cataniasd.com

Rise and Grind Creative Director of Grind & Prosper Hospitality Group Shares His Favorite Parts About SD

San Diego NAME: Huy Hoang JOB TITLE: Creative/ Brand Director and Photographer, Grind & Prosper Hospitality Group

3 REASONS I LOVE WORKING AT GRIND & PROSPER:

RESIDENT OF: San Diego

1. We create an awesome experience for people through food and atmosphere. 2. There is always something new and cool happening. 3. We all work hard, but play harder (haha!).

LOCAL LIVING: 38 Years

SHOWING SUPPORT

I love that Grind & Prosper gives back to the community because, at the end of the day, the community looks out for us. The COVID pandemic is living proof of how we’ve all looked out for each other.

A DRINK THAT PACKS A PUNCH

Ò I’m not a beer drinker, so when I’m not drinking tequila or rum, I crack open a JuneShine. Like traditional kombucha, JuneShine contains probiotics, antioxidants and vitamins, and I love that they use sustainable, organic products. They have a couple of cool intimate tasting rooms and have fun events from time to time. Follow them on social media for updates (@juneshineco).

TRIP TO THE TROPICS

Ò Head to Leilani’s Cafe in Pacific Beach for the best Loco Moco—a Hawaiian dish layered with rice, hamburger patty and an over easy egg, all smothered with gravy. It’s a candidate for the Cholesterol Hall of Fame, but it’s totally worth the splurge! They have a Polynesian store next door that has all sorts of fun gifts too. www.leilaniscafe.com

WAVES AND BEATS

Ò Living in Southern California, there’s so much to do. I love surfing, taking my camera out to shoot photos and traveling in my Eurovan. My favorite event, which happens twice a year, is in our own backyard: Crssdfest. It’s awesome to see so many worldrenowned producers, DJs and bands. Get your tickets to the after parties—you never know what artists might show up to play for a secret DJ set. www.crssdfest.com

NICE TO MEAT YOU

Ò I love to take out-of-town visitors to Cowboy Star; their selection of steaks is amazing. Their 8-ounce Hokkaido Wagyu New York is flown in from Japan and aged for 23 days. They are open for lunch, and they have a $13 tasty burger where the patty is made with all the ground up trimmings from their steaks. www.cowboystarsd.com

FEELING FISHY

Ò TJ Oyster Bar has delicious Baja seafood fare for an affordable price. I typically order the whole fried snapper. The skin is crunchy and seasoned with spices and herbs, and the fish is so soft on the inside. It pairs perfectly with a michelada with tamarindo. I can spend all day here just having drinks with friends; I just need a designated driver! www.tjoyster.com

Last summer, we flew out to the New Belgium Brewing headquarters in Fort Collins, Colorado to help deconstruct a huge 20-foot beer barrel and use it in a co-branded timepiece. They are a zero-waste brewery that uses an impressive solar panel system to provide electricity for brewing their beer!

On the surface, Clive Standen is what you’d picture as the definition of manliness. He’s played warriors, is an athletic champion and does his own stunts. Get to know him a little better and you’ll find that beyond the biceps and the beard is a caring father of three, an ambassador for marine life and someone who loves singing along to Mumford & Sons. In other words, Standen represents less of what it means to be a “man’s man” and more of what it means to be a man of the modern age.

Already very active with Muay Thai boxing and professional stunt training, Standen’s acting career began in his teens, which was around the time his mother had decided to go back to school so she could teach drama therapy to children with Down Syndrome. “I was 16 and very impressionable...and I really looked up to my mum and all the [21-year-old drama students] she was working with,” he says before cracking a smile. “At the same time, there was also a girl I really liked...and that’s where it started.”

A

With the support of a mother and teachers who believed in him, Standen decided to take the idea of acting professionally more seriously. “I’ve always been that person where you give me an incentive and I suddenly get tunnel vision, and I ride toward that goal,” he explains. From there, he decided to take classes to further his education on the subject but was disappointed by the amount of armchair knowledge the courses required. “I couldn’t just do theater, which was frustrating to me at the age of 16. I was like, ‘Why isn’t there a course that is practical to being an actor?’” Standen recalls. “A lot of the courses were all theory...and I had already read all the books that were on the syllabus. So I did a year of theater studies and [then] dropped out—I didn’t want to be a historian, I wanted to be an actor.” Standen found his place in performing arts courses, which not only allowed him to practice his craft, but it also let him explore the more physical side to performing, and this is where he was able to tie in his knack for athletic training. “It all came in handy for the stunts I do now!” he says. “I’m a little insane and crazy and a bit of a lunatic when it comes to stunts.” Needless to say, the combination of his acting and physical training fared well for him in his career. Best known for his role as Rollo in “Vikings” and Bryan Mills in the “Taken” TV series, Standen’s acting career has taken him around the world, through ancient and modern times alike. When he wasn’t sword fighting in Camelot or throwing axes in Kattegat, he was pulling off a heist in Rhode Island or getting hit by a car (then stealing said car). “It’s simply not true that you just walk into jobs,” Standen explains. “Usually you get cast for what your strength is. I’m a very physical actor; I have a very physical presence, and I got into acting to play numerous different characters—and characters that were far removed from myself.” “I don’t actually like playing onto type,” he continues. “But usually, that one audition you get right at the beginning of your career is the one where people go, ‘I can just see him playing that role!’ I think I was thrown into the historical epics, the dramas that are more physical, and now I can branch out.” His roles have all been very different characters to play, but there is something Standen loves about each of them: they are flawed. “I don’t think anyone’s perfect,” he says. “There’s something I hold on to and think about quite a lot: in Chuck Palahniuk’s ‘Fight Club’ (the book), the first time the main character sees Tyler Durden is on the beach, and he’s getting driftwood and shoving it in the sand…” The passage Standen’s referring to continues: “What Tyler had created was the shadow of a giant hand. Only now the fingers were Nosferatu-long and the thumb was too short, but he said how at exactly four-thirty the hand was perfect. The giant shadow hand was perfect for one minute, and for one perfect minute Tyler had sat in the palm of a perfection he’d created himself.” (Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club). “The point of that scene in the book is all you can expect from perfection is a moment, and if you look for anything more, you’re going to be disappointed,” Standen explains, “and I think human beings are the same. You can have many moments of perfection in any one day, but you have to look for them and appreciate them.”

Extracurricular Activities When he’s not working, Standen is an acting ambassador for Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

He’s Got the Beat “I did a lot of contemporary dance training,” Standen shares, “and I think it actually helps with the choreography of fighting and the sword play—you pick up the moves and your movement ability is so much better.”

Parental Guidance “We have this little game around the dinner table now where I go, ‘Say one good thing about your day and one bad thing about your day,’” says Standen, “and none of the other kids or anyone around are allowed to question that bad thing… It’s about being readily available to communicate your feelings with the people you love.”

Location, Location, Location Some of Standen’s favorite filming locations have been in the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland and Tybee Island in Georgia.

Nice Handiwork Standen is a former international Muay Thai boxer, a fencing gold medalist and is ambidextrous with a sword.

Standen never shies away from his characters’ flaws. Instead, he embraces them, letting those imperfections add texture and humanity to the roles. Aside from being flawed, the roles throughout his career have all tended to be rough around the edges. Whether he’s played the honorable knight, the battlehungry viking or the vengeful ex-CIA operative, they can categorically be called men of violence. However, Standen’s most recent role of Anthony Lavelle in “Council of Dads” is a change of pace.

S

“There seems to be a big thing about toxic masculinity,” Standen says. “There’s nothing wrong with a man who cries and expresses emotion. And I wanted Anthony to be a hugger, a kisser. He’d hold his heart on his sleeve: when he’s angry, he’s angry; when he’s emotional, he’s emotional, you know?” Over the past few years, the term “toxic masculinity” has become an undeniable buzzword. The term not only challenges how our society sees men, but how our society shapes these men as well. It’s an idea that’s been around since the ‘80s, and it’s just now catching on in the mainstream. While the current rhetoric may seem like it’s mostly focused on calling out men for being

predatory or too aggressive, the term was originally created to question why our society raises our boys to feel shame for emotional expression, to utilize violence as an indicator of power and to be overtly self-reliant, among other points. While his warrior-type roles haven’t necessarily been poster boys for today’s idea of healthy masculinity (presumably due to the time periods the stories are based in), Standen has attempted to bring a more relevant portrayal of modern masculinity to his present-day characters. But not everyone has been on board with it. “I did have some time on ‘Taken’ [during] a very emotional scene...the scene felt very much like the scene in Se7en with Brad Pitt yelling, ‘What’s in the box? What’s in the box?’” Standen shares. “And I played the scene really emotionally—I had tears in my eyes— and the director came up to me and went, ‘Can we do another take? But can you stop the tears, because tough guys don’t cry.’” Despite this note, Standen felt strongly about this scene and continued to deliver an emotional performance, but by the time production was finished, each one of Standen’s tears had been edited out.

In a stark contrast, Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, the producers of “Council of Dads,” were seeking the opposite from their actors. “One of the reasons I signed on [to ‘Council of Dads’] was Tony Phelan saying, ‘Let’s just stamp out this toxic masculinity,’” Standen says. “And I told him that story, and he said, ‘Well, you’re not going to get that from me.’”

I

The NBC show, which aired this past March, follows the Perrys, a family that has just lost father and husband Scott Perry to cancer. In his remaining months, Scott had created a Council of Dads to help take care of his five children after he’s gone— from driving lessons to words of wisdom. “It’s been really great to play a character that’s emotionally ready,” says Standen. “There’s a lot of violence and gratuity in the world right now... and ‘Council of Dads’ has a really positive message, and it’s full of joy...and optimism about moving on, and finding humor through grief, and it’s about who shows up. It really mirrors the modern family today, I think.” Aside from its relevance, one reason Standen believes the show will resonate well with its audience is because he has seen the parallels between the story and his own reallife experiences firsthand. “‘Council of Dads’ works on so many levels, but what’s interesting to me, especially with my character, is the role of a father in our society,” Standen explains. “My dad left when I was eight years old, and I haven’t seen him since. I had an amazing man who stepped in and took over that role, and I don’t like calling my stepdad my stepfather—he’s my dad. Anyone can be a father, but it takes a strong man to be a dad.” “‘Council of Dads’ is about a man who dies of cancer...but it doesn’t have to be about death; there are lots of families out there where dads just walk out, they leave or they’re away on business for very long periods of time,” Standen continues. “So on one hand, it’s about the role of single moms and how hard they work, but it’s also about how important the role of a father figure is.” On-screen, Anthony Lavelle is a man without a family, whose superpower would be “the ability to talk to children on their level.” Standen describes his character as the “cool uncle” that kids can trust and talk to, but he’s still able to fill in as the strong male role model. “But what’s interesting is that he’s never had anyone love him,” Standen shares, “and he needs this family as much as they need him.” Another way that Anthony paralleled reality is that Standen plays the best friend of a man battling cancer, a role he has played in real life. “My best friend—best man at my wedding, best friend I have in my whole life—was diagnosed with cancer, and he was very, very ill,” Standen says. When he originally met with Rater and Phelan, who wanted him for the part of Anthony, Standen pitched himself to play the role of Scott Perry, who dies in the first episode. “I start crying in my interview with them, going ‘I’m not sure I can play this role because my best friend is dying of cancer, and I don’t want to be the guy on TV playing the best friend.’ And they said, ‘Well, maybe this is why you need to play this character.’” This is a man who has fallen backwards off a three-story-high wall (on purpose), but the role of Anthony daunted him on a much deeper level. “Most of the roles I’ve played in my career have been far removed from me,” he explains. “It’s very hard for me to go, ‘This is me. I’m playing myself.’” But Standen remembered advice he had received in drama class: if you’re scared of a role, you should play it. Fortunately, Standen’s friend is now in remission. “He’s a lot better now,” he says, “but it was terrifying at the time.” Standen’s hope for ‘Council of Dads’ is that it sparks real-time conversations within families and creates a platform where difficult, but important subjects can be broached. He believes that an open line of communication is key—not only to strong, inclusive families, but to raising the next generation as well. “It’s about communicating. There’s a lot of anxiety and depression and things that people are ashamed to talk about, and I think it’s important to vent by talking,” Standen notes. “And again [it comes back] to who shows up...about loving yourself and living in the moment,” he says with a grin. “All you can expect from perfection is a moment—so live that moment!” LOCALE MAGAZINE 41

“I love the design process. Placing and replacing different designs until I’m happy with the final pattern takes hours and is so much fun. My absolute favorite part, though, is adding finish to the final product and seeing all of the grain come to life beneath the different finishes. My Patriarchy Portrait illustration and my Sunburst Mosaic are my favorites—I never tire of looking at them.”

“For us, making things provides a break from our hectic world. It’s an opportunity to unplug and truly enjoy the process— not just the end result. That’s what we’re really into; it’s not just going through the motions of making something, it’s experiencing each step of the process, both as an effort to improve your skills and to just zone out.”

Simone is a coffee connoisseur, a sunshine soaker and (undeniably) a sustainable savage. She opened The Nada Shop one year ago in the heart of Encinitas, right off the buzzing Highway 101. Customers can bring in containers from home or buy them at the store. “We have the ability here to plant the seed,” says Simone. “They might

think twice about getting that plastic water bottle or bringing their own cup to get coffee.” It’s these gentle micromoments that have the greatest ripple effect. “Little things you can do here and there add up to make a really big impact,” says Simone. “It doesn’t have to be an absolute mentality.” People can make small switches to their daily habits to live more sustainably. Walk to the cafe or ride a bike. Keep a Zero Waste Kit in your car, which is one of The Nada Shop’s essentials. “If you go get coffee and don’t have your reusable cup, just get a coffee and don’t get a lid with it,” Simone says. Even those seemingly minuscule actions add up to a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

> Art at L’Atelier starts at $5 and ranges up to $5,000, depending on the product or art piece.

WHY

> “I think the experience of interacting with any artist inspires and excites people,” says Viannay. “To come to a place that is in constant flow and growth and see an item you might buy being made right here—it’s something you cannot buy on the internet.”

EAN GENIE DENIM

It’s All About the Perfect Fit

> Jean Genie Denim offers personalized custom fittings for denim, specializing in vintage Levi’s, transforming each pair into new silhouettes based on each client’s specific needs. Co-founder Cassidy Michelle shares that each pair of jeans is unique, just like our bodies, so they are always fitted with that in mind. MISSION

> Michelle’s goal is to encourage people to move away from the trend of disposable, cheaply made clothing and reinvent an American classic staple by forming an impeccable custom fit, all while contributing zero waste.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND

> Jean Genie Denim specifically only carries “true vintage,” made-in-the-USA Levi’s in their denim studio. “The weight of the denim, the way it ages and how they were originally constructed is something very special,” Michelle says.

PRICE POINT

> Jeans range from $75-$225 per pair. Tailor fitting and original hem is $35. Distressing ranges from $15 to $55. Mending and patchwork start at $15.

WHY

> Michelle believes what we invest in wearing should enhance how we look and feel about ourselves, not detract from it. One of her specialties is mending and patching even the most destroyed favorite old pairs, giving them new life.

KIDDOS

Julia Wheeler Creative Director

> Seaesta Surf is a local brand dedicated to letting kids be kids—long days in the waves, snacks on the beach and naps in a hammock. “We work with independent artists to create all of our exclusive prints, and all of our swimwear is partially recycled,” says Creative Director Julia Wheeler. From patterned one-pieces and comfy boardshorts to beachy button-ups and custom rashguards, Seaesta Surf is a sunny San Diego brand perfect for any kiddo that loves to surf, eat and nap! 1. “The Pommes Button-Up Shirt in Tan Camo is the easiest way for your kiddo to dress up and still look casually cool. Pair this with a matching pair of boardshorts and they’ll be extra styling.” 2. “The Surf Eat Nap Snapback Hat has our motto (and basically everyone’s goal) printed on a hat. Your little can wear this accessory year-round to keep the sun off of their face while they surf, eat or nap.”

This FemaleOwned Business Channels Creativity Into Edgy and Empowering Designs

W

With some sass, a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor and a hell of a lot of drive, Courtney Wall, the founder and creative director of Lady Killas, has created a brand that is all about embracing your badass side. The online-based clothing and merchandise line and the female empowerment group have been Wall’s passion projects and creative outlets since 2017.

3. “In the Sea Ripple Tie Dye Boardshorts, your kid will be the coolest one on the beach! Bonus: they are 50% recycled and 50% organic.” 4. “We collaborated with San Diego artist Denisse Wolf to create the Tigres Sorbet Swimsuit. She hand-painted these tigers to create a grr-ific wearable art piece!” 5. “Rashguards don’t have to be covered in cartoon characters to be cool to kids. Keep them protected from the sun in the Calico Crab Rashguard with UPF 50+.”

Lady Killas is essentially a onewoman shop, but as Wall puts it, “The brand is made by many. I couldn’t run the business without my crew of die-hard friends… Simply put, we’re a group of badasses who believe in equality and the hustle.”

The brand is not only a line of merchandise, but also an organization whose purpose is to grow and empower women in leadership. Wall wanted a way to bring together women in the design

industry, so in 2017, she started a meetup group that eventually grew into a network of artists, designers and leaders. Wall then put her empowerment-inspired products online that same year. She says that the black-and-white designs make her pieces simple, but fun and easy to wear. Ranging in price from $10 to $30, the shop’s items are also accessible and affordable to badasses of any income bracket. The sayings on the shirts are relatable too, as they are pulled from pop culture, hip-hop lyrics and Wall’s own life experiences. “The brand doesn’t take itself too seriously,” she says. “The voice mirrors my own after a glass of wine. It’s casual, sarcastic and empowered.”

Situated in the quaint neighborhood of Golden Hill, Girl on the Go opened its doors with the unique idea of offering luxury, affordable skincare services during the evening hours for working professionals. Unlike most spas, Girl on the Go is open until 10 p.m., Monday through Friday. “I wanted to find a way to help men and women who work hard be able to still treat themselves,” says Dana Gray, owner and head esthetician of Girl on the Go. The late-night notion quickly caught on, and over the years, Girl on the Go has evolved into a full-service wellness spa, offering massages, event makeup services, airbrush tanning, waxing and all-natural skincare treatments. One of the salon’s most popular treatments is the Pure Bliss spa experience—a 2.5-hour facial and 58 LOCALE MAGAZINE

body treatment that’s designed to put you into a deep state of relaxation and leave your skin feeling silky smooth. The experience begins with a dry brushing and body scrub and finishes with a hydrating hair treatment, scalp massage and foot massage. With 15-plus years of experience in the beauty industry and an innate passion for wellness, Gray takes pride in the allnatural approach. Girl on the Go sells four different skincare brands; among them is best-seller Ilike Organic Skin Care, a Hungarian brand that uses solely cold-pressed pulp instead of essential oils. “With Ilike, you get all of those natural essences from the plant,” says Gray. Using products with the highest level of active ingredients, Girl on the Go is here to help you reach your wellness goals—no matter your schedule.

RINTS + PAPER

Seaside Papery Is Anything but Two-Dimensional

> Print isn’t dead! While we may live in the digital age, Seaside Papery has been alive and kicking since its establishment in 2004. Owner Jori Fentiman first opened her shop in Coronado as a way for people to find personalized stationery and invitations locally rather than opting for mass-produced chain store products. While the store still receives a significant amount of customers purchasing stationery, they’ve introduced a range of products that also relates to our tech-driven society. “In this digital world we live in, it’s really great to witness people enjoying what may seem like mundane items,” says Fentiman. Many of the technological products they sell are created by stationery designers. Seaside Papery often works with local artists and companies, as well as craftsmen across the country, to design locally themed products. “This way, we are able to combine our ideas with their talent,” Fentiman explains. Her background in graphic communications paired with her buying experience from retail stores went hand-inhand when finalizing the concept of her shop. Seaside Papery’s aesthetic appeals to an array of ages, genders and demographics. “We have something for everyone, whether it be a unique fountain pen from Germany or a handmade alpaca from a small family in Tijuana,” notes Fentiman. The colorful shop aims to be a creative haven for patrons; the longer they stay, the more there is to discover. ADDICTED TO THE ‘ZA It may seem odd or even ridiculous, but Cattaneo admits to having a Margherita pizza almost every night for dinner.

MATTEO CATTANEO OWNER

Would you be surprised to hear that there is another new restaurant in San Diego? Probably not, but Matteo is not like the others scattering around South Park or San Diego County as a whole. Matteo is the latest concept to join the Buona Forchetta family, and while there is pizza on the menu, the eatery is striving to reinvent the term “neighborhood restaurant.” Matteo will offer Italian cafe staples, delectable renditions of breakfast classics and a place to call home when you don’t want to be at your actual home. Above all else, Matteo is a 100% nonprofit restaurant dedicated to raising funds for community programs and educational opportunities for the youth of San Diego.

W

With a one-way ticket to the beach, Matteo Cattaneo was leaving on a jet from his family’s Italian vineyard. After arriving in San Diego, it was not the kitchen that Cattaneo found. His initial intentions were to study law, but with the help of a part-time job at a friend’s restaurant, a fueling fire began to grow, and a love for hospitality was born. Cattaneo was working in La Jolla when the idea to open a pizza restaurant came to light. His dream was met by confusion and disarray regarding the food choice, the neighborhood and leaving his current position. But he was set on his mission, and Buona Forchetta was born. Cattaneo reached deep into his Italian roots to bring a neighborhood pizzeria 80 LOCALE MAGAZINE

FAMILY AFFAIR Proving Cattaneo is just like any other, his tattoo sleeve was not well-received by his mother. KEEPING IT TRADITIONAL In the seven years since opening the first Buona Forchetta, Cattaneo and the team have not put a single piece of pineapple on any pizza.

to South Park, which regularly has lines around the block just to buy a slice or two. Expanding beyond South Park to Liberty Station, Encinitas and Coronado, Buona Forchetta has become a staple in SoCal Italian dining. And because four Forchettas wasn’t enough to fill the plate, Cattaneo opened Enoteca Buona Forchetta (next door to Buona Forchetta South Park), serving up delicious drinks, tasty tapas and perfect paninis. But wait, there is more! Gelati & Peccati, a Roman-style pizza stand in North Park, and Carbón, a barbecue restaurant in South Park, are soon to be joining the Forchetta family. “I don’t have any free time,” says Cattaneo with a wink, “but when I’m not at the ‘office,’ I am with my family.” A father and husband, Cattaneo takes every moment away from the restaurant to be at home with the family. But don’t be surprised if you see his kids running a restaurant, because each of Cattaneo’s restaurants are certainly built from his Italian family heritage that never really separates family from work. It may seem that he is spread thin from Coronado to Encinitas and back down to South Park, but South Park is where it all started and where Cattaneo has found a community to help support his efforts—not that there’d be any problems, given the delicious food. Matteo, the newest addition to the Forchetta family, opens its doors to a new methodology of the community restaurant. Matteo was conceived with the community at the forefront of its aesthetic.

a seat with a menu or approach the counter to order; both options present the real problem of what to choose from the mouthwatering menu. There is fresh-baked bread and pastries, Benedicts, griddle cakes, frittatas and, above all else, breakfast pizza. The entire menu is made fresh with the purest ingredients, and the pastries are overseen by former Cardamom Cafe owner/baker Joanne Sherif. While Matteo’s food certainly sits on the top of a pedestal, it’s the quality that helps give back to the community by way of schools and various charities—every dollar made over daily expenses goes right back into the community. Before its doors opened, Matteo held an open poll for suggestions of organizations that would receive contributions from the restaurant. “It will be a rotating list of charitable organizations that our proceeds go to,” adds Cattaneo. “[Currently,] we’ve helped to initiate an art program with McKinley Elementary School and are working with different sectors of the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs.” Matteo is intended to be a gathering place for the South Park community where you should expect to run into your neighbors, buy freshly baked bread for dinner (if you can get out the door without sneaking a bite) and enjoy a moment of peaceful sanity, knowing your happy tummy is contributing to the greater good. Matteo’s flavors will tickle taste buds, hours will be lost in conversation and, best of all, your contributions will extend back into the surrounding community.

“The ‘Ohana’ spirit is spread through the food we cook, the warm service we provide and the amazing guests that keep coming back.”

When You’re Here, You’re “Ohana” • Eat Local. Drink Local. Employ Local. Herb & Sea prides itself in hiring only the best local talent, highlighting its commitment to the neighborhood and nearby community. The Perfect Pairing • Wash down your flaky bun with a carefully crafted cocktail. The chef recommends the Rum & Sun, a tropical rum cocktail inspired by the brunch menu with blood orange, ginger, lime and maraschino liqueur.

In Hawaiian culture, the word “Ohana,” which means “family,” extends far beyond just immediate family and close relatives. The term signifies an idea of togetherness—that we are all better together. It’s the spirit of friendship and unity, gathering friends and neighbors together as one that rests at the heart of Herb & Sea.

—EXECUTIVE CHEF SARA HARRIS

It’s not just another day at the beach for the kitchen crew and staff. Led by Executive Chef Sara Harris, this seafood-forward coastal hot spot dishes up daily farm-to-table favorites like roasted oysters and bone marrow and wood-grilled Una salmon. Since its opening in November 2019, Herb & Sea incorporates bright, balanced flavors expertly crafted with creativity and purpose. The contemporary coastal design features an exhibition kitchen, offering guests a warm and inviting family atmosphere. In collaboration with Executive Pastry Chef Adrian Mendoza, Chef Harris creates a weekend brunch menu rich in flavor and family. They settled on a Hawaiian-inspired menu as an ode to Kealani’s, a throwback to a treasured local eatery that once occupied the historic art deco building. “The ‘Ohana’ spirit is spread through the food we cook, the warm service we provide and the amazing guests that keep coming back,” says Harris. “We want to be known as a neighborhood staple to our Encinitas community like Kealani’s was.” The shining star of an already inventive brunch menu that includes Crab Louie Avocado Toast and spicy wood-fired Hawaiian pizza, is the deliciously decadent pineapple upside down cinnamon roll. “This was the first item we created for our brunch

menu,” she explains. “We tested the dish with staff, and needless to say, it was an instant hit!” As hordes of hungry sun-kissed brunchers feast under bright clay-beaded chandeliers, these rolls are delicately removed from a hot oven with the sweet aroma permeating the air. Spiraling inside this masterpiece is a combination of cinnamon, brown sugar, velvety butter and creamy candied macadamia nuts. They are baked upside down with a slice of juicy pineapple and a dash of brown sugar sprinkles that turns into a mouthwatering caramelized gooey glaze, infusing the culinary confection with maximum deliciousness. Like a volcano of ooey gooey goodness erupting with flavor, the dish is finished in style with the proverbial cherry on top. “It’s a mouthful—both the name and the bite,” she highlights. “They are a labor of love that you can taste!” From the open-kitchen concept to the rounded oyster and raw bar, Herb & Sea invites guests to experience a kitchen in action. Chef Harris conducts her symphony of sweetness in front of a live audience. They say home is where the heart is; well, if your heart beats for bold, seasonal seafood specialties blended with innovative and ingenious dessert offerings, welcome home. LOCALE MAGAZINE 87

SOLANA BEACH’S RANCH 45 OFFERS UP LOCAL PROVISIONS WHILE STAYING TRUE TO ITS ROOTS

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: MARAELIA ROMAINE AND MIKE SMITH

Built on the farm-to-fork approach, Solana Beach’s Ranch 45 prides itself in letting the rancher, fisherman and farmer shine on each plate. “It’s a subconscious approach...It’s who we are,” says Pam Schwartz, co-founder of Ranch 45.

Solana Beach

FOOD

The vision for the eatery extends back to its original roots. The restaurant’s name is a tribute to the Brandt family, who established their cattle business in 1945 and became one of the first ranchers in Southern California to go all-natural–– no hormones and no antibiotics. Famous for their beef and sustainable practices, the family grows and harvests all of the grass and grains that the cattle are fed and recycles all of the water that goes through their plant. “They work hard to reduce waste by using each part of the cow instead of dumping unwanted parts into a landfill. It’s really cool what they do,” says Schwartz.

• From fresh cuts of meat to hearty breakfast options, Ranch 45’s farmto-table approach goes beyond the traditional.

DECOR • Wood furniture and industrial accents give the space a cozy, rustic feel.

Scattered throughout the Ranch 45 menu, you’ll find various dishes featuring the famous Brandt Beef, such as the mouthwatering Brandt Burger, the corned beef Reuben sandwich and the savory shaved ribeye taco. While Ranch 45 boasts an extensive menu of locally sourced ingredients and responsibly raised meats, the restaurant houses a butcher shop and offers live cooking classes. “We are so many things in such a little space,” Schwartz explains. From grilling and smoking to salad-making and children’s baking, guests can learn the origins of their food and how to best prepare the meats sold at the restaurant’s butcher shop. Through these offerings, Ranch 45 has established itself in the local community and continues to educate its patrons on the value of sustainability.

PRICE • Breakfast options hover around $12, while lunch dishes range from $10 to $15––affordable prices for locally sourced ingredients!

VERDICT

For Schwartz, Ranch 45 has allowed her to put her skills to use in restaurant management, wine service, education and sourcing local ingredients. “I grew up in the farming community, in a small town in northern Florida; we just ate what was available,” she says. As a graduate from the Culinary Institute of America, Schwartz’s career has been focused around fine dining, her passion for hospitality and making sure that people are well-fed and happy. “The best is seeing somebody who’s not necessarily having the best day, come in and walk out with a smile on their face. That’s what it’s all about.” 100 LOCALE MAGAZINE

“In order to have a good experience, you need to have a good bartender willing to step up to that responsibility.” —Erick Castro

“I started waiting tables and realized that the bartenders were having all the fun—I was like, ‘Yo, I need to get back there,’” Erick Castro says. That was back when Castro was 22 and attending San Diego State University. Flash forward to 2020, and Castro is now the host of the award-winning podcast “Bartender at Large” and co-owner of Polite Provisions and Raised by Wolves, where he leads their groundbreaking cocktail programs. 110 LOCALE MAGAZINE

“Even before I got into the fancy cocktails, I saw it [bartending] as a responsibility—I saw that the bartender was coordinating the experience and the good time for everyone at the bar. In order to have a good experience, you need to have a good bartender willing to step up to that responsibility,” Castro explains. As with any job in the hospitality industry, there are certain obligations in terms of customer care. So when it comes to recommendations, Castro says that it all depends on the guest’s mood; “Are they here to celebrate? Are they looking for something stiff? Are they looking for something to sip on while they enjoy the company of their friends? One of my favorites on the menu at Polite Provisions is the Layover in Paris (grapefruit liqueur, absinthe and sparkling rosé).” And what would this legend’s advice be to those who dream of being a great bartender? “The best advice I’d give someone is going to be advice that’s going to make them a good person—you can’t really separate the two. Work on your listening skills. If you can become a better listener, you can become a better bartender. So much of what being a bartender is stems from communication, whether it’s your team, boss or, more importantly, guests,” says Castro. Described as a “love letter to the art of bartending and the world of craft cocktails,” “Bartender at Large” aims to tell the story of the cocktail industry from a bartender’s perspective. The podcast actually started out as a successful documentary; Castro and his team traveled across the US, interviewing different bartenders. “From there, it ended up turning into a podcast, and the podcast became way bigger than the documentary ever was. People don’t think a segment of

CASTRO’S GOTO DRINK? •An old fashioned.

STAYING IN •“On a Friday night, you won’t find me at any bar! I’ll pop in to Raised by Wolves and Polite Provisions to see how they’re doing, but then I head home. I’m too old to be hanging out at bars when it gets too crazy,” says Castro.

this market is big enough to care about craft cocktail bartenders—you’re dealing with a segment within a segment within a segment.” Turns out, people do care, and it’s people all over the world. The podcast’s fastest-growing market is overseas, mainly in the UK and Australia. “Bartender at Large” sits down with the bartending and cocktail industries’ biggest names to talk about everything from cocktail techniques to selfcare in the bar industry. “The podcast really didn’t get good until episode 50—almost a year in. Since we were in uncharted territory, we were kind of just free-willing it. It got repetitive,” explains Castro. He discusses an episode they recorded on burnout, and the realization that they didn’t want to fake happiness on the podcast. “We were all just kind of burnt out, so we decided to talk about burnout,” Castro says, “We received tons of feedback and thank yous. That episode kicked open the door for us on what’s possible. We don’t always have to talk about why we like the old fashioned; sometimes, we can talk about issues that are swept under the rug.” Castro’s outlook and goal for every episode is to add value to people’s everyday lives and to constantly engage and communicate with the audience. “If we’re talking about real issues that people wrestle with and deal with that aren’t really being addressed, then I know the episodes and the content are going to become more timeless,” Castro explains. While we’re all wondering what the hospitality industry is going to look like post-COVID, Castro offers a bit of insight. “I think with bars having a lower capacity, they will have to focus more on providing an experience that people will be willing to pay for and enjoy as opposed to volume. We’re not going to be able to pack bars full anymore. We’re going to have to see how we can tailor that experience so that customers are willing to stay and possibly come in at times they wouldn’t normally before,” he says. Until the glorious day when everyone is back at the bars with friends, put your Airpods in, pour yourself a glass of whisky and tune in to the latest episode of “Bartender at Large.”

Kimmons’ favorite spot to set up a picnic is the green huts at La Jolla Cove. “Our tables are a good height, so you can sit overlooking the water.”

WRITTEN BY: NADINE BLANCO PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: JUSTIN CRITZ PHOTOGRAPHY When Lauren Kimmons staged a Valentine’s Day picnic to promote her vintage rental company in 2011, she didn’t think it’d be the inception of what would later become Pop Up Picnic Co. In fact, she recalls not giving the idea much attention at all until people outwardly expressed their love for her work. “We kind of just kept getting requests for it, so I just kept doing them and offhandedly called it a ‘pop up picnic.’’’ Having started her career in the wedding industry by renting out vintage furniture and designing events, curating a beautiful picnic came naturally to Kimmons. In 2016, the stress of the rental company led her to sell the business, but at that point, buzz around her “pop up picnics” grew even stronger. Eventually, with her innate creativity and entrepreneurial

When revamping the concept for this new business, she drew from her wedding industry background. “So often, you do these magnificent events, but it’d be cool to have a micro-event that feels just as special—that you can do for everyday stuff—and that’s how the picnic aspect came up,” she says. “One of the things that’s so nice about living in San Diego is having these beautiful sceneries and places to set up picnics.” Today, Kimmons creates immersive picnic experiences where the locations speak for themselves, needing only to add finishing touches like fresh flowers, unique decor and fresh charcuteries sourced from Mona Lisa Italian Deli and Venissimo Cheese. THIS SOCAL COMPANY IS SHAPING THE ART OF POTTERY AS WE KNOW IT WRITTEN BY: DIEGO E. GAXIOLA PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NIKI CRAM Founded over 45 years ago, ARCHPOT is a family-owned small business behind the design and creation of breathtaking fire and water features and gorgeous pottery, found in a multitude of locations around the country. “Something a lot of people don’t know, being a smaller family business, is that we are in some pretty well-known hot spots. The Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Fashion Island and Pelican Hill in Orange County and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC,” explains ARCHPOT’s General Manager Tim Hall. An Orange County local, Hall, reminisces of his humble beginnings, detailing how the company transformed from a wholesale nursery to a highlyreputable manufacturer.

F

Thinking back to his childhood, Hall states, “I have always been creative and originally wanted to become an architect.” After Hall and his family moved from Mission Viejo to Tustin, he began to shadow his father, immersing himself in the art of pottery creation and familiarizing

himself with the challenges often faced when running a business. “The family business started off with plants—we were a wholesale nursery. Later came the marriage of plants and imported pottery, creating Architectural Pottery in 1989,” he says. Hall attributes a lot of his creativity to others’ creations on social media. “People inspire me. I like to see what is out there, and I ask myself how I can do better. How can I put a product out there that people will want in their home or business space?” In 2019, 30 successful years later, the family decided to rebrand the company, unveiling the name ARCHPOT. “Of course, in every family business, there are challenges. Any challenge we have had has resulted in growth,” explains Hall. With the continued expansion of the company, Hall and his team are able to focus on delivering products that truly distinguish themselves from others in the market. From the material and finish process to ARCHPOT’s utilization of high-tech and lightweight cement, the company is constantly striving to create products that exemplify expert craftsmanship. Overseas Inspiration • When Hall was just 17, he took a trip to Greece where he watched handthrown pottery being shaped. It was at that moment he realized the creation of pottery was indeed an art form. In the Works • Currently, ARCHPOT is working on custom Belize fire tables for the historic Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. “We are taking such pride in this project because of the historic location.”

“I love our location. It’s so fun to get to know the whole design community out there!” —Maria Isles

Names: Maria and Max Isles Job Titles: Owner/Designer and Woodworker/Furniture Maker, Isles Interiors

Ever since she was little, Maria Isles wanted nothing more than to be an interior designer and to own her own shop. And while life initially took her off-course from that dream, by the time her son was old enough, she went back to interior design school. That was eight years ago. Since then, Maria finished school, and she and Max found a space to turn Maria’s business goals into reality. “We found this little space on old Newport

I’d ask, ‘Can you make a coffee table in a week?’ And he’d be able to whip it up! He’s so talented—it was the perfect combination for us to start a business like that.” Isles Interiors is not only a culmination of the couple’s talents and skill sets, but of their styles as well. “It’s so nice to design [pieces] together with the client’s input,” she shares. “It all works out really well.” “It’s fun to bring out a story for the client—whether it’s the room or the whole house, it just really has to flow,” she explains. To achieve that, Isles Interiors’ process relies on finding or creating one-of-a-kind pieces that tie it all together.

1. Have a good relationship with your client. 2. Map out your story and your plan. 3. Don’t deviate from the plan! 4. Find unique or custom pieces.

From Max’s conscious selection when it comes to materials to Maria’s enthusiasm for antique and reclaimed pieces, the couple is putting an environmentally friendly stamp on a style that is uniquely and completely theirs. “We mesh really well together,” Maria says. “It’s fun being creative with him!”

For Sara and Rich Combs, what began as a cross-country road trip to escape the daily grind turned into a booming project, dedicated to helping others reconnect with themselves and with nature.

“without questioning it,” they bought The Joshua Tree House. While it originally began as a home for them to reset and work on their own projects, the Combs soon found success in listing their home as an Airbnb.

“We really fell in love with Joshua Tree on that trip,” Sara says. “After we went back [home] to New York, we kept thinking about how good it felt there, how creative we felt there with the open landscape.”

“We realized other people were craving a space like that as well,” Sara shares. “We eventually opened it up full-time for bookings, and then we fell in love with creating spaces for people where they can reconnect with nature and have that time to reset.”

In 2019, the pair took on their largest and most challenging project yet: The Posada in Arizona. “We got this property in Tucson that was an old, abandoned inn, and we wanted to renovate it,” Sara shares. “It was the biggest space we’d ever done, and we just went for it because it felt perfect.” They soon found

After a coffee chat in the city, the ladies immediately started talking about launching some sort of business for their shared love. NEAT Method launched in 2011 and has now expanded to 65 markets across the United States and Canada. Their fresh perspective on organizing resonates with individuals across North America and shines through their half-million followers on Instagram. “We really worked on the branding and quickly had other women reach out. Ashley and I saw the importance of growing our business and giving women like us the opportunity to grow their business in their own market,” Graves explains. Katie Koentje, owner of NEAT Method in the San Diego market covering SD and Orange County, joined the team seven years ago and has been an integral part of the NEAT expansion. “I always knew I wanted to own my own business, and when I found NEAT and Ashley and Molly, I knew it was time to take the leap,” Koentje says. Koentje is also the director of franchise training within the company, helping to train new owners when they launch. “My favorite part about being a NEAT Method owner is being surrounded by 65-plus female business owners who support, challenge and care about each other; #BetterTogether,” states Koentje. The NEAT team are experts in home organizing, moves, relocations and even virtual organizing. They tackle everything from pantries to kid’s rooms and everything in between with the goal of making each space effective, sustainable and stylish. Organizational solutions are implemented into each space, such as labeled baskets, color coordination and limitations on items. Graves explains that the first step in organizing a space is taking everything out of it. “It’s hard to see everything you have unless it’s all out in front of you. It’s harder to eliminate something. You can’t judge whether you need the item until you see that you have five black t-shirts all together. Once everything is out and categorized in like piles so you can see it, it’s easier to begin,” says Graves. But once you tackle organizing your home or have professionals assist, what’s the secret to staying organized? Graves confidently states the answer is two-fold: putting limitations on spaces and having assigned organizational solutions implemented in the space. Additionally, NEAT Method is in the process of launching their own unique product line. “We’re really excited about offering that!” exclaims Graves. So whether you’re procrastinating cleaning out your cluttered closet or simply want the organized Insta-worthy pantry of your dreams, the ladies of NEAT Method are here to help you jumpstart your journey to total tidiness. 132 LOCALE MAGAZINE

HOW TO CREATE A PRODUCTIVE AND ORGANIZED WORK-FROM-HOME SPACE NEAT Method’s Tips for Working From Home

W

Working from home is a more common lifestyle these days, and if your time at home has been extended and unexpected, it’s time to create an effective work environment. Molly Graves, co-founder of NEAT Method, shares a few tips on creating an organized office space.

STEP 1 DESIGNATE

• “Having a dedicated workspace in your home is important—even if that means that the space is used for something else in the evenings. When you work from ONE spot, you are less likely to lose any important work documents.”

STEP 2 DESIGN

• “When we say design, we don’t mean become an interior designer, rather, determine what your aesthetic is in the rest of the house and try to recreate that in your workspace. Create an environment that is inviting and entices you to want to sit and work there all day. Don’t just throw the space together; put some thought into it—add a photo, corral your favorite pen and paper and, above all, if the space is needed later (for example, if you choose the dining room table), make sure your space can be easily put away at night by having a basket to collect your work items to store for the evening.”

STEP 3 DE TAILS

• “It is all about the proper use of organizational solutions. Find a basket from home that could be used for paperwork, appoint a favorite mug to use to store your writing utensils and keep recycling and trash [bins] nearby. Making your workspace easy for you to use will make it more enjoyable to be there!”

STEP 4 DEDICATE

• “A functional workspace takes five minutes at the beginning and the end of every day in order to be successful and functional. It is important to create routines around setting up and putting away your work items so that you can focus on other things in your life. Keeping work at work has a new meaning since many are working from home. Having habits that help you remove work from your living space allows you to take a much-needed break from your work life no matter where you are working.”
