Welcome to our 2019 FOODIE San Diego issue! Once a year we dedicate an entire issue to shining a light on our vibrant and innovative “Foodie” culture. In the coming pages we ask locals to detail their favorite weekly stops in our Native Knowledge section (pg. 22), my favorite recommendation being fish tacos from Ironside Fish & Oyster—make sure to put that on your “must try” list. We pit local mixologists against each other in a battle that turned out to be very fruitful for all of us (pg. 47), and I suggest that you ask for Moe Girton at insideOUT to make you a Sunkiss Squeeze. In our Foodie Guide (pg. 57) you will be transported around the globe without leaving our country or its borders. Make sure to try the Death Star margarita at Galaxy Taco to feel like you are on vacation. You will need your actual passport to try the food in our next story as we fly to Japan with food blogger sisters

@hangrydiary for a tour of Tokyo’s food scene (pg. 71)—extra-fluffy pancakes included. Like the business partners (and best friends) that they are, Alisha Marie and Remi Cruz arrived together with a mini entourage of BFFs-turnedproduction-team in tow to the frothy pink dreamworld that is to become their cover photo shoot.

To say that pink was the theme of this session would be an understatement. With the flamingo-hued backdrops, an electric neon sign shouting the words “GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS” and feminine props like heart-shaped balloons and giant pool floats, the scene was a full-fledged Instagram wonderland, wrapped up and tied with a Pinterest bow. And the cherry on top? The clothes! With an array of candy-colored statement pieces to pull from the wardrobe rack, Cruz made an entrance in her first look: a pale pink pleather mini dress. Marie followed suit, stepping out of the fitting room in a fringed, bright fuchsia number, which Wardrobe Stylist Sara Borgese cinched with a skinny white belt. With Remi’s long, dark, beachy waves and Alisha’s choppy, blond, chin-

length locks, their chic looks and lovable “fun girl” personas complemented the style for their cover photo shoot. Snacking from a take-out container as Beauty Stylist Artist Jennifer Mau carefully dusted highlighter along her cheekbones, Marie begins explaining the backstory on her career as a social media influencer, which currently sees her as the co-creator of the recently-launched podcast “Pretty Basic” which she started with—you guessed it—Cruz. The other half of the duo only needed some finishing touches, having arrived already fully-lashed and glossed. For two girls who make their living in front of a camera, this shoot was a piece of cake for photographers Jared Magnani and Joe Schlachet. After making their way to the set, the pair tapped into their arsenal of pretty poses, played with fun props and blew bubbles with a plastic wand. In their natural element, the cover shoot theme created a world that’s perfectly suited for Marie and Cruz–best friends turned top digital influencers.

A Letter To My Younger Self, Today, I am 40 years old. There is so much I wish I could have told you 15 years ago as I worried about the life ahead. The fact is, you already established a solid foundation for the future. You were 25 years old, had big dreams, a strong work ethic passed down from your family and the worst thing you could become in your own mind was mediocre. Here is some advice to take along with you to ease the road ahead; you have never followed anyone or anything, and because of this you have often traveled the longer road. Know that even though your path won’t be the same others have taken— yours will be windy, bumpy and at times dark—that is okay. Don’t compare your path and timeline to those around you. If you stay focused on what you want out of your life, you will arrive at your destination. Because your personal and professional aspirations are big, you are willing to take risks to get what you ultimately want, or at least think you want at the time. This will open up a journey filled with the highest highs but also the lowest lows. Embrace those lows. Do not become a victim of your circumstance. You should know your greatest triumphs and motivations to learn will come after the dark times, making you enjoy the ride up and feel forever grateful for every ounce of happiness during the good times. Remember—compromise but never settle. Determination will power you forward. Your ability to stay true to yourself will remain your lighthouse. Trust your gut—it has always been your most powerful tool. Don’t let your motivation to achieve be the fuel to prove people who didn’t believe in you wrong. While it was good motivation at one point in your life, it isn’t healthy. I urge you to do things for yourself and for those who truly matter. I promise you, you’ll barely remember why some of those opinions of naysayers influenced you. Always remember that time with your family and your closest friends should be a priority, period. It doesn’t seem it at 25, but life moves fast and tomorrow is not a guarantee. Jamie, you have always been enough, you deserve the life you have always dreamed of. Go get it, girl!

Most models are used to facing rejection, but where some might see roadblocks, Deddeh Howard saw an opportunity. Born in the African country of Liberia and raised in Cote D’Ivoire, Howard moved to Los Angeles at the age of 19 with a dream of pursuing a modeling career. After being turned away by several agencies claiming they “already have a black model,” she decided to take matters into her own hands. With her photographer boyfriend behind the lens, Howard recreated major ad campaigns featuring white models, recasting herself in each shot and comparing the images side by side, launching what would become The Black Mirror Project. Seeking to raise awareness about the lack of diversity in the modeling and entertainment industry, Howard created an inspiring platform to fight for equal representation for women of color. “The project was created to inspire women like me who don’t feel represented or beautiful,” says Howard. “My goal is to keep inspiring, helping and spreading the word of diversity because I truly believe that we all matter.” Already an Instagram-verified lifestyle blogger and YouTuber, Howard was able to shine a light on her cause through social media— showcasing women of all colors and ethnicities and increasing their visibility while garnering a loyal following. Word of Howard’s mission spread and the project quickly went viral, sending her on a bonafide publicity circuit. While Howard believes there is still work to be done to achieve equal representation, thanks in great part to the popularity of her vision, the industry is beginning to listen.

Model Behavior

“It starts with the brands demanding that diversity [should be] featured in their campaigns,” Howard explains. “What they demand, the market will deliver. It also takes the vision to represent the world we live in today and not just a limited scope.” Howard says she’s grateful for the outpouring of support she’s received from the media and from fans around the world. The “baby steps” she’s witnessed toward greater inclusion is a beacon of progress for women across all industries and professions.

Tuning into one video inevitably leads to another, until hours have passed, making it easy to understand why viewers emerge with the distinct feeling that they’ve just acquired a new best friend. Chock-full of goofy hijinx, rapid-fire editing, dizzyingly colorful graphics and electro-pop music intros, it is the stuff of pure Gen Z fantasy. Now doubling their efforts, the 24-and-25-year-old influencers have brought their bubbly personalities (and a combined fanbase of over 28 million social media followers) to the airwaves in the form of a podcast called “Pretty Basic.” Having already pulled in a whopping five million downloads since launching in October, these girls are taking 2019 by storm with a live, four-city minitour set to kick off in April, including a one-night stop at the San Diego Observatory. Both natives of Orange County, Marie and Cruz had some pre-awareness of each other’s existence when they each started creating YouTube videos 10 years ago. They had some mutual friends in common, and once they both had developed an internet presence, each became a fan of the other. “We always kind of knew we’d be best friends,” Marie explains, referring to the time before their mutual agent played influencer matchmaker and made the introduction. “In fact, someone just sent me a screenshot recently of a comment I posted on one of [Marie’s] old videos that was like, ‘Oh my God, I love your channel!’” Cruz says. Adding to their list of commonalities is the shared fact that both girls found support from their families in putting college on the back burner to pursue YouTube as a full-time career. Cruz’s parents gave her one year to focus on growing her following, and the rest, as they say, is history. Carving a niche as a lifestyle vlogger, in an arguably oversaturated industry that’s still in the process of writing its rule book, is a task that many have tried and few have mastered.

“At the time when I started, 10 years ago, it was like you had to fit this kind of picture-perfect mold,” Marie explains. “Back then, the lifestyle genre was more about tutorials and these master gurus telling people how to do things, making it seem like you were an expert and your life was perfect. But I process things out loud, and now sometimes I’ll just have a question and make it a conversation [on the podcast] and we’ll talk things through, versus my videos where it’s just me talking to a camera.” This notion of relatability, of breaking the fourth wall with viewers and showing their genuine personalities allow viewers a glimpse behind-the-scenes of an otherwise glossy exterior, which is the key component to both the girls’ individual popularity and of their subsequent podcast. “Being able to open up and be vulnerable, which ‘Pretty Basic’ has helped me with a lot,” Cruz explains, “has really helped me grow my audience without even trying because they see that I’m not perfect.” Marie agrees, adding, “I came into this realizing that I’m not…a supermodel. I’m not Kylie Jenner. I shouldn’t even try to play those parts because it’s not who I am. I try to be myself as much as I can, and I think a lot of people like that and relate to it because no one is glammed up 24/7.” Cruz also understands the scrutiny that comes with physical appearance, having documented much of her inspiring 60-pound weight loss journey via her YouTube channel. “I think having someone always giving some kind of input on every aspect of your life [has been a challenge],” she says. “I cut my hair and people were freaking out about it. Something as small as that to something as big as my body transformation, it’s like everyone has an opinion about what I’m doing or not doing correctly. It’s crazy to not have any aspect of my life that someone isn’t judging.”

“My favorite thing about the podcast is when we get listeners who tell us that we helped them get through something.” —Alisha Marie A lack of privacy and becoming the target of blatant uncensored opinions from the general anonymous public is one of the prices one must inevitably pay in exchange for internet fame. While most of the girls’ fanbase is accompanied by overwhelming support and lavishing loving comments on their video star “BFFs,” the callous negativity of internet trolls is shockingly abundant, as illustrated in one of Cruz’s videos entitled “Fat vs Skinny,” which was published in November of 2018 and has received close to two million views as of press time. In this video, Cruz points out the hypocrisy in reactions from members of her following regarding the way she comports herself as a physically altered version of her former self. While she reiterates that her fun personality hasn’t changed along with her physical appearance, she receives an onslaught of backlash to her once-silly ways, now filed under the category of “slutty.” The plot of the video sees her seek to re-create a staged photo originally posted by Alissa Violet, fellow YouTube star and model, who strikes a sultry pose in a bathing suit. Cruz notes that although Violet’s picture received a barrage of gushing support, after capturing herself in the same pose and posting the photo to Instagram, Cruz’s post received quite the opposite. Seated at a kitchen counter in a hooded onesie, Cruz reads and shares screenshots of the alarmingly hurtful array of insults she receives in the comments—everything from shaming terms like “slut” and “hoe” to even suggesting that she become a porn star with the insinuation that she’s seeking male approval. In the face of all this negativity, learning to love herself has been the ultimate lesson. Having the courage to take such hostility in stride is a new societal phenomenon, the likes of which former generations have never endured. Adopted first by millennials and perfected by the incoming Gen Z population, the ability to desensitize and mute the angry white noise of a phantom internet chorus–a digital mob airing its grievances online and projecting

their insecurities onto those on the other side of the screen–is an essential skill to master in today’s social media-driven society. While many young internet users have faced some form of cyberbullying, not all have experienced brushes with strangers the way that public personas like Cruz and Marie have. “[Being recognized in public] is the weirdest thing,” Cruz says. “People are so nice and polite, but I always have this realization that they know so much about me and I know nothing about them. They’ll be like, ‘How’s your dog? How’s your mom?’ But it’s so cool knowing you have that connection to people.” Finding that work/life balance is another challenge. In a YouTube video posted in May 2018 entitled “This Isn’t Goodbye...,” Marie describes the creative burnout she experienced from the pressures to create and post content on a consistent basis. The hustle led to overworking herself to the point of exhaustion, causing her to take a much-needed two-month hiatus to focus on herself and emotional wellbeing. Now that she’s back in fighting form, “Pretty Basic” has breathed new life into the world that she and Cruz share and they’re glad to be able to reach their followers in a new way. Their fun banter is full of endearingly honest glimpses into their personal lives, with the easiness and familiarity of old friends at a slumber party. “My favorite thing about the podcast is when we get listeners who tell us that we helped them get through something,” Marie explains. “We forget sometimes that we’re talking to an audience, it feels like we’re just talking to each other. Our personalities really balance each other out.” “I never get sick of her,” adds Cruz. “Maybe one day!” As for the podcast and their personal brands, the future is bright. In addition to the mini-tour, a year full of brand trips and personal growth is on the horizon. “The sky’s the limit,” says Cruz. “We always say, ‘There are no ceilings.’”

The jaw-dropping Cotton Candy Burrito is best paired with a plain hot or iced Americano, according to Lee, who claims a sweet latte would render the burrito “tasteless.” We’ll take his word for it! LAB Dessert & Coffee, formerly known as Blush Desserts, is tucked away in a Kearny Mesa shopping center, but it’s not to be missed—the sweet smell can lure you in from a mile away. Guests who enter the shop can expect a flawless fusion of vintage and modern style, gorgeous lighting and, of course, a myriad of inventive and colorful indulgences. LAB’s menu is packed with dozens of other sweet treats, including 14 different flavors of house-made macarons, macaron ice cream sandwiches, snow ice and cloud cheesecake. When serving the anago, Chef Saotome used a long, metal utensil to slice the eel into two. It was truly amazing! Sunday mornings in San Diego typically begin early for MICHAEL JOHNSON. While the rest of the laid-back city enjoys a lie-in, he is up and about at 4:30 a.m., converting pizza joint Long Island Mike’s in Kearny Mesa into a gigantic kitchen and processing center for his non-profit Hunger 2 Help, otherwise known as the Burrito Boyz. By 5:15 a.m., Johnson and his staff are cooking up to 130 pounds of potatoes and cracking approximately 1,920 eggs, which youth and adult volunteers will later assemble into mouth-watering burritos. Within two hours, the team will have produced and packaged 600 burritos and, after assigning various duties to the younger volunteers, will be preparing to take the food to feed the homeless in East Village.

“We always give the kids an inspirational talk before we take our caravan on the road,” says Johnson. “[We hope] that they will connect with people and know them by name. Our goal, which we try to impart through these pep talks, is to provide hope, dignity and comfort to a population that often doesn’t receive the help it needs.” The outing that would soon morph into Burrito Boyz occurred in 2012, when Johnson’s then 17-year-old son Alex presented him with a Christmas list featuring multiple expensive items. Drawing from his own experiences working with the homeless in his hometown of Cleveland, Johnson decided to take his wife, his son and his son’s friend, Luke, to make breakfast for San Diego’s homeless population in the hope of helping the teens gain perspective and learn to appreciate the things they had. Says Johnson, “We chose burritos because they were the easiest type of hot breakfast to transport and make in large quantities.” That first Sunday was a success—not only did the quartet administer 54 burritos along with water bottles, but the two young men also asked if they could do it all again on the following Sunday. 80 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Much to Johnson’s surprise, Alex, Luke and their friends—the original seven Burrito Boyz—worked on this new enterprise through Christmas 2012 and beyond, steadily recruiting other youths and their parents as volunteers. According to their official website, the Burrito Boyz have convened in the East Village for 428 consecutive Sundays and served over 217,000 people as of publication date. Johnson describes these gatherings as “a big family dinner in the home territory of this population. We started out going from one sleeping bag to another, but now we use tables and have everyone stand in line to collect their food.” In addition to the burritos and water bottles, the volunteers distribute necessities such as toilet paper and feminine products, dog and cat food, pastries and other miscellaneous items. Meanwhile, the teen volunteers set up a special area for homeless children to play games and receive goodie bags, while the adults provide books at a miniature lending library, whose materials are dispersed through the encampment. Johnson and his crew also provide information on housing and employment and various other resources for the homeless men and women they assist, although they typically wait to do so until they have earned an individual’s trust and respect. For the past four years, Burrito Boyz have been successfully “developing relationships over meals and working over the course of months to build friendships that may not have happened otherwise,” says Johnson. “We understand that there are many different reasons why someone might be homeless and that just handing someone a pamphlet or dropping them off at Father Joe’s is not a permanent solution. Instead, we get to know each person as an

individual, and when they finally reach the point where they feel comfortable opening up to us, that’s when we encourage them to seek help.” Despite the attention that the Burrito Boyz’s philanthropy has garnered from media outlets all over the world, Johnson remains grounded by the immediate demands of his family’s enterprise, including ongoing efforts to become more environmentally conscious in 2019. “We’ve made a point of collecting more trash from the streets than we bring in,” says Johnson. “But now we really want to step up our efforts and teach the homeless how to be better neighbors.” In recent weeks, the Burrito Boyz have been providing their homeless customers with reusable canvas bags emblazoned with the non-profit’s unofficial motto: “Serving the world one burrito at a time.” Individuals are encouraged to bring their bags with them each Sunday to receive a special treat. Johnson also hopes to eventually stop relying on plastic water bottles and potentially introduce reusable bottles and a refill station to the community. For now, he is eager to “improve our overall efficiency so that we have more time to engage new homeless friends.” If the way to one’s heart truly is through the stomach, he should have no trouble with that at all.

Growing up on a Southern California ranch surrounded by horses, 4-H member and math lover Bryan Vaughn may have seemed like an unlikely candidate for 2018 Fashion Week San Diego’s Top Designer. But, his experience was likely what catapulted Vaughn to earn the title this past fall. After a brief stint in a structural engineering program, Vaughn felt an undeniable urge to apply his problem-solving skills to fashion design in 2007. In 2016, he launched his line, VaughnBerry, and never once questioned his decision.

VaughnBerry primarily focuses on menswear with an artistic approach. “VaughnBerry takes classic and familiar silhouettes and then blends them with fresh and different outlooks. As a menswear designer first, I have always felt this genre was stale and boring to a certain extent. I grew tired of seeing the same nicely-fitted black and blue suits walking the red carpets,” Vaughn explained. “No longer do men have these stale options. In VaughnBerry, textiles make all the difference in design. I love to use eccentric textiles that are feminine in nature. Fabrics like chiffons, brocades, faux furs and lace are great examples of textiles you will find in my menswear.” The designs are targeted to the traditional gentleman who doesn’t take himself too seriously and is not afraid to take risks. According to Vaughn, “This man travels with the belief that the adventure is more important than the destination.” While primarily focused on menswear, the line also includes designs for the modern woman. “The greatest thing I am learning about VaughnBerry is that even women are wanting to wear my menswear. In fact, my menswear inspires my womenswear. The VaughnBerry woman loves expressing herself as a woman, but wants to be taken seriously in this modern world,” Vaughn said of his androgynous designs. The line breaks these traditional style boundaries for men and women by gleaning inspiration from Vaughn’s lifetime love of nature and the environment. “I always had a love of animals and nature which is a huge aspect in my line today. Everything we need to exist is in nature,” Vaughn noted. “I’m fond of hiking and traveling, and the sites I’ve come across bring out emotions I have never felt before. The textures, landscapes, animals and weather all tell a raw and evoking story. Those stories provoke thought and feelings within myself, and I tell that story through my designs. When I watch my designs come down the runway, I love to watch the audience’s reaction.

When I see my feelings in the reactions, I know I’ve done my job.” Not only do Vaughn’s designs tell a story about nature and the feelings it can evoke, but they also work to preserve the environment. “I find trends wasteful and too impactful on the environment and the whole fast fashion industry is living proof,” Vaughn explained. “Touching back on my inspiration, I love nature and look to preserve as much of it as possible when it comes to my line. I’m looking for ways to make my line 100 percent sustainable, and that’s a trend I support fully. As a fashion designer, I am not looking to follow trends. Instead, I’m looking to create trends that will last forever.”

It’s only fitting that this nature-minded and boundary-breaking line was donned by 2018 Fashion Week San Diego Top Model, Jaenna Wessling. Wessling is both an environmental scientist and an Asian-American model who is breaking the norm of traditional models. Wessling, who began modeling in 2017 and appeared in her second FWSD in 2018, has made it her mission this year to avoid fast fashion brands. “My goal is to move toward more sustainability. I hope that the fashion industry will move toward fair-trade and higher quality,” said Wessling. Similar to VaughnBerry’s disruptive designs, Wessling is blurring the lines for traditional models, too. The print and runway model has Filipino, German and Irish heritage. “I grew up not really seeing Asian-American models. I would love to see more representation from people who look like me in the media,” Wessling explained. While Wessling is breaking barriers for racial diversity in modeling and environmental science, Vaughn is continuing to blur the traditional boundaries in menswear and womenswear across the country. • The most unusual place that Quigley and Fan have gone to harvest materials is Wales. Says Quigley, “We stayed in a barn and foraged in the surrounding farm for firs, vines and patterned stones.”

It’s a Must-Read!

Oceanside has a reputation for being an easy-going beach town, an ideal place to raise a family near the calm beauty of the ocean. But within this even-keeled city, business owners Danielle Quigley and Sue Fan have established a space for their suburban customers to embrace their wild sides. Their shop, Wild Habit, sources natural and organic materials from a variety of locations throughout the United States, from forests to fens and beyond, and transforms these items into jewelry, decor, furniture and other statement pieces. Says Fan, “We take beautiful things in nature and show you how to use them to make your home warm and wild.”

All it took was a trip to Antarctica to bring these two outside-the-box thinkers together. Quigley and Fan originally met in college, bonded by their careers in photography and a mutual love of journeying through the great outdoors and designing products from materials found on their adventures. As they discovered a market for their unique creations, the women found themselves expanding their passion into a full-fledged business enterprise. Fan elaborates, “We began to gather anything we could find in nature—stuff we found on our walks, like birch bark 98 LOCALE MAGAZINE

in New Hampshire or sheddings from deer antlers in Maryland. We once sourced cacti from Joshua Tree here in California!” From there, Fan and Quigley shape their findings into entirely unique products, with no two items being the same, even within a singular line of lamps or wall hangings. The results, according to Quigley, are entirely unpredictable and completely representative of the shapes and colors found in nature; one can expect plenty of curves and soft lines, as well as hues of green, brown and white. The duo also accentuates their wares with contemporary elements. “As much as we try to bring the outside in,” says Quigley, “we also try to balance our natural vibe with modern features. For example, we might use a bit of shiny bronze or rose-gold accents to complement our wood products.” This aesthetic also extends to Wild Habit’s physical location. Fan describes the premises as “a big open space with a clean, modern feel” that complements the earth-hewn tones and textures on display. There is also a dedicated DIY area in which customers can use the natural materials that Fan and Quigley scavenge to make terrarium necklaces, birch bark stamps and any other crafts they can imagine. Not surprisingly, the store and its products have attracted artists and “plenty of transplants from Los Angeles and elsewhere who are drawn to this woodsy style,” says Quigley. Many families have

also embraced Wild Habit’s free-spirited creations; according to Quigley, “We have a strong community here in Oceanside who contribute to its ‘gritty and pretty’ vibe. We know our customers by name, and we love that people get to take nature with them when they leave our shop.” Wild Habit is equally dedicated to teaching its customers “the importance of respecting nature and leaving the wild to be wild,” says Quigley. Not only do she and Fan practice recycling and environmentallyfriendly sourcing in their sojourns, but they also promote charities that will give back to the landscapes that they adore. “We do our best to be as sustainable as possible in designing and selling our goods,” says Fan. “Ten percent of our proceeds go to an Arbor Day non-profit, and one tree is planted for every single item we sell at Wild Habit.” As 2019 dawns and new adventures beckon, Quigley and Fan anticipate reaching out to new customers and going bigger and better with their craftsmanship. To that end, the women can look to their own customers for inspiration—or rather, their customers reach out to them. “People often send us stuff that they find on the ground,” laughs Fan, “or else they’ll bring the material into the shop and try to make something out of it. We keep up to trend by observing what interests our clients.” It certainly seems that the ladies of Wild Habit won’t be at risk of losing their customers’ interest any time soon.

looking for. But it was the mixture of career aspirations, passion and deviating from the mundane concept of the traditional workout that eventually led to SPARKCYCLE’s May of 2014 opening in the scenic La Jolla area—one of the factors she credits to the company’s successful debut.

You could say Stephanie Cochrane, founder of the energetic, polished and increasingly popular spin class company SPARKCYCLE, may not have expected to get into the fitness industry prior to starting her career journey. In fact, her creativity, business-savvy ambition and willingness to try new things had little to do with spin class at all. What started as a way to de-stress and unwind after work then became a part of her normal routine. From there? The idea sparked and that creativity, business-savvy drive and adventurous quality fueled Cochrane to take the ride of her life.

In her early years, she began as an equestrian who competed in show jumping and participated in three sports in high school. Fast-forward to college, when Cochrane began working at a nonprofit where she gained knowledge about building businesses and brands while also practicing real estate on the side. This made for a busy lifestyle—something which cycling helped her manage.

“We had people who were excited about bringing this concept to San Diego, and I really have to attribute it to having really good people on our team. And the La Jolla community was super welcoming,” Cochrane said. “People got really excited about it.” But perhaps the true moment came when Cochrane found what gave her a great sense of gratification—seeing the joy and happiness her spin cycle classes brought to others.

“It was finally something I would look forward to doing after working. I was working maybe 10 to 12 hour days sometimes,” said Cochrane. “I would find myself leaving work early or at a normal time to go cycle in Orange County, and I just fell in love with it.”

This then funneled into the next evolution of her vision for the company: creating a space that reflected a sense of friendship, camaraderie and a jubilant community within each class—one that instills relationships both inside and outside.

The then 26-year-old Cochrane discovered a newfound love for her spin class—a place allowing for an escape from the daily Orange County chaos. She would also often visit San Diego to see her brother, only to find that the area didn’t seem to offer the same type of workout routine she was

in love with it. I was like, ‘oh my gosh, this feels amazing’—just seeing the joy and the excitement and the adrenaline after a class...that’s what it’s all about.” After seeing success in La Jolla, Cochrane opened another location in Point Loma’s bustling Liberty Station in April 2017. Both locations feature a vibrant, immersive experience with low-dimmed rooms and around 40 bicycles per class. The music alone provides plenty of incentive to get the full, calorie-searing workout with reverberating beats bouncing off the walls and the rhythm of pedaling classmates around you. But don’t be fooled, this experience can be enjoyed by riders of all levels. “We want people to feel welcoming and inclusive, and we want people to feel comfortable and empowered—it’s

not just for the cool kids,” Cochrane says. “Honestly, it’s intimidating to go to a boutique fitness class, so we want people to feel amazing when they leave the studios. Our instructors are welcoming and we try to make it accessible while still challenging so that you leave feeling challenged and inspired.” As for SPARKCYCLE’s future? Cochrane is still pedaling strong. Her passion for bringing people together through the joy and rigor of cycling still drives her today. “I’ve been so fortunate to be able to be in an industry where I get to work with people that want to be doing what they’re doing—people who are passionate about improving people’s lives. I love the freedom I have right now, and the ability to be creative and put smiles on people’s faces.”

If you’re an avid Insta follower of the coffee shop, then you’ve most likely double-tapped on some of their creatively colorful concoctions—and you can thank Barista Jenny Fong for that!

Do you have a love for coffee and art? JF: I just thought it was so fascinating how I could get creative with latte art! Do you have a favorite design or creation? JF: I started with a basic heart rosette and now I’m able to do a swan! Now I want to progress and become more advanced to perfect my craft with more creations.

How did you get into it? JF: My sister decided to open shop and she needed help, so I thought ‘Okay, this was going to be really cool!’ How long have you been creating latte art? JF: Well, I never thought about it because I didn’t have any experience until my sister needed art, then it took me around three months to have it down and I’ve ended up loving it. So I’ve been doing it a while now, most days after school in the afternoons and weekends.

What was your inspiration behind becoming a latte artist? Jenny Fong: My sister signed me up for classes and I also went on YouTube to watch some video tutorials and they were so helpful. Then when my sis got a Breville machine for home, I would practice, like, two to three hours a day after school and I would find myself more interested and inspired. Once I understood the basics, I would want to challenge myself to do more complicated art.

Can’t Rush Art • If you’re ordering one of Fong’s signature rainbow lattes, be prepared to give the artist time to do her thing! The intricate process takes around five minutes to perfect.

Have you done any latte competitions? JF: I only did one and I was so nervous against the other competitors but out of 64 I made the top 11 before I was eliminated. It was really fun but nerve-wracking. Can you describe the popular rainbow latte? JF: People see pics on Instagram and when they come in they want what they’ve seen. We use food coloring in the milk and the creation takes a lot of work, so it’s only a weekend thing, which works because during the week people just want grab-and-go coffee and not so many rainbows.



A Glowin’ Good • On the moonlight hikes, guests can use black lights to discover cool insects that glow in the dark, like scorpions.
