100 My Style

Plant-Based For This Normal Heights Shop, Atmosphere and Adventure Are Second Nature

editor's note Some days call for a salad and an hour at the gym. Other days call for an ice-cold IPA, a deep dish pizza and a side of no regrets. Life is all about balance. And as much as I love eating clean and feelin’ good, a little indulgence is necessary to keep things fun. I’ve got to be honest— my love for good beer extends far beyond my love for salad. With that said, I hope this issue makes you reaaallly hungry for some new foodie adventures. We’ve rounded up everything from stellar happy hours and food hall favorites to sly speakeasies and the best tacos in town. With pages chock-full of decadent brunch dishes and Michelin Starred must-haves, our March foodie guide is sure to leave your tummy rumbling. And the best part? We created it using all 26 letters! But before you dig in, prepare for a giggle as our cover star Rob Riggle dishes on life as an actor, veteran, mayor and family man. Let’s just say

this story is packed with stacks upon stacks of poker chips and a lifetime supply of delicious fare in an all-youcan-eat fashion. Once your mouth is fully watering, thumb through and find a slew of creatives and collectors who’ve managed to turn their dreams into reality. Among them is Aaron Hennings, a San Clemente native who turned socks into a worldwide sensation (pg. 88), January and James, owners of Wild Island Collective (pg. 100), Leslie Cohn and Jeff Pitroff, the brains behind a nonprofit taco shop (pg. 108) and so many more! Whether you’re still trying to maintain that New Year bod or you’re ready for some flavorful adventures, I encourage you to skip the salad, show your taste buds some love and dig into this amazing San Diego Foodie Guide with relish! I’ll raise my pint to that. Bon appétit!

The clock strikes noon. Rob Riggle sits comfortably on a beige velvet couch in the Mayoral Suite of Harrah’s Resort Southern California, poised and relaxed. Today, our team of stylists and photographers were determined to bring Riggle’s on-screen knack for absurdity to life with a series of over-the-top shots built on the concept of decadence and—most importantly—fun. Takin’ a Gamble Dressed sharply in a dark blue dinner jacket, white dress shirt and black tie, Riggle sat down for a game of blackjack with $4.2 million in chips stacked around him. As Riggle goofed and smized for the camera, models Madison Ashley and SNT JMS joined in on the million-dollar shot with boujee, celebratory flair. “Rob’s personality really brought this shot to life,” says photographer Jared Schlachet.

Funner

Time for a Trim With Harrah’s state-of-the-art barbershop at our disposal, Riggle headed in for a risky trim as blindfolded Ashley posed confidently with trimmer in hand. “Because it’s the spring issue, I chose light fabrics like linen, which lend an easygoing feel; I wanted to create that relaxed vibe,” says wardrobe stylist Melissa Souza. With a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ attitude, Riggle played the fool in this ironic, haircut-gone-wrong shot, hamming it up as usual. Feast Your Eyes From stacks of jumbo crab legs and juicy sausage links to decadent cakes and ice cream, Riggle sat down at the Buffet for the lunch of a lifetime. “For this shot, we snuck in Rob’s Adidas shoes because why not be comfortable in your own kicks when they’re not going to be in the shot?” shares Souza.

THANKS A BRUNCH

Ò “Nate’s Garden Grill is my favorite laidback, out-of-the-way brunch spot,” says Thaheld. “The biscuits and gravy will send you over the moon. There’s live folk music often, and it’s adjacent to a plant nursery with lots of animals for the young ones to check out. It’s out of the way in City Heights and very unsuspecting.” @natesgardengrill

LOCALE MAGAZINE

KEEP IT 100

Ò When it comes to finding the best locally sourced ingredients for Snake Oil Cocktail Company, Gonzalez recommends Specialty Produce. “They have everything you might need,” he says. “The quality is always on point, and the staff is awesome. Get there around 10 a.m. to noon before the craziness happens.” www.specialtyproduce.com

OLE TOWN ROAD

Ò “I am always intrigued by the road less traveled,” Thaheld says of Grand Ole BBQ. “Although it has gotten quite popular, it still feels transportive to go to this roadside destination for the stellar barbecue and live honky-tonk music on the weekends. Get there early and get a seat out back, so you can enjoy the live jams. Don’t forget to try the Lady Bird’s Texas Red Chili.” www.grandolebbq.com

NEAR AND DEAR

Ò When it comes to the food and drink scene, it’s always important to support sustainable efforts. “KINDRED puts a lot of soul in their dishes and tries to be eco-friendly but always focuses on flavor,” notes Gonzalez. “It has a really cozy bar, the atmosphere is casual, there’s great music—it’s perfect for hanging out with some friends. Order the Rice Above; it’s a great choice!” www.barkindred.com

STRIKE GOLD

“The love that is put into cocktails and experience—we always try to bring our customers a little bit of the passion that we have for this industry.” —Irving Gonzalez

Ò Gonzalez’s favorite place to grab a drink is El Dorado Cocktail Lounge. He says, “The atmosphere there is really chill, the staff is super friendly and they put serious effort into their cocktail creations.” But when it comes to brunch, it’s hard to beat the Westgate Hotel (and their flavored bellinis). “Ask for bartender Alex— he makes the best bloody mary around!”

Ò Brunching in San Diego is practically a religion, and Morning Glory is our church. From the tiles to the teacups, every detail lends to the eclectic, effortlessly cool vibe. UNDENIABLE ELEGANCE

Ò My girlfriends recently took me to Animae for my birthday, and it did not disappoint. We ordered family style, so we were able to try a bit of everything. The unique ingredients unexpectedly meld together to create bold, delicious flavors. Plus, the design and decor are undeniably extravagant in a rich and refined way. www.animaesd.com

ROOFTOP RENDEZVOUS

Ò Carte Hotel is a hip new hotel in Little Italy with a great rooftop bar—Above Ash Social—which is open to the public. The surrounding buildings frame out the best view of San Diego Bay. They have amazing craft cocktails, a projector-size TV, couches and fire pits! www.hilton.com

MY CUP OF TEA

Ò I like to swing by Copa Vida in East Village when I am heading into our IDEA1 offices for morning meetings. They have a great selection of teas, which is why I’m such a fan. Try the seasonal jalapeño version of their hibiscus iced tea. I live for it! www.copa-vida.com

Ò The Lakehouse Hotel and Resort is a beautiful little oasis in San Marcos that seemingly pops up out of nowhere. It’s newly renovated and beautiful but retains the timeless charm of the ‘60s when it was first built. The property is comprised of two top-notch dining options—Decoy, an elegant upstairs eatery, and Dock Bar, a downstairs casual restaurant floating on the water.

3 PLACES TO GO FOR A GREAT COCKTAIL IN SAN DIEGO

RESIDENT OF San Diego, Cortez Hill LOCAL LIVING 10 years

1. Raised by Wolves 2. Fifth & Rose 3. Park & Rec (I love ping-pong)

LOVE WHAT YOU DO

I love AVANT! The building itself has an incredible history. We have an onsite vegetable garden with a master gardener, Trish Kydd, who works with me and the team to grow the produce that is served at AVANT. The best thing about AVANT is our Table 65 tasting room.

TASTE OF SD

Ò My fiancé and I like to do a “date night food tour.” Our tour starts at Herb & Wood for their hamachi crudo and oxtail gnocchi. We wash that down with one of my favorite drinks in town, Mezcal & Flowers. We then shoot over to Born and Raised for the dry-aged meatball. After, we head to Cowboy Star for a “dessert” of A5 striploin and a nice glass of whiskey—you can’t really go wrong with anything Chef Victor and his team create at Cowboy Star.

“The best thing about AVANT is our Table 65 tasting room.” —Christopher Gentile

MEET YOU AT THE BAR!

Ò Raised by Wolves is my favorite place to grab a cocktail. I love hitting this spot with a belly full of dumplings from Din Tai Fung. I’m a really simple cocktail type of guy, but when I bring friends to Raised by Wolves, they usually go for something more adventurous. I really like this spot because there are no distractions—you can have a great conversation in a dimly lit room, turn off the phones and just enjoy your company. raisedxwolves.com

Ò I really enjoy staying at Pendry. Although I only live a few blocks away, when the lady and I are going to a festival at Waterfront Park or just planning a fun night out, we like to go to the Pendry for our staycation. Honestly, my favorite brunch spot in SD is Provisional Kitchen at Pendry. Chef Brandon Sloan never disappoints, and I’m a sucker for bucatini bolognese. www.pendry.com/san-diego

PRETTY IN PASTEL

Ò Chef Andrew Bachelier and the team at Jeune et Jolie have done a killer job. I love a great-tasting menu experience, and the Carte Blanche menu here does not disappoint. The decor perfectly matches the food, and the service staff is super knowledgeable—all unwavering in approach and elegance. www.jeune-jolie.com

LET’S ROLL

Ò The omakase menu is incredible at Sushi Tadokoro; the fish is fresh and delicious. It’s definitely a hidden gem because it’s located in Old Town—it’s not a tourist trap, and it can be a bit tricky to find if you don’t know where you’re going. ROSEWATER

Humor • [hyoo-mer] n. A quality which appeals to a sense of the ludicrous or absurdly incongruous.

From stand-up and slapstick to improv and over-the-top exaggerations, humor grants us the ability to drop our shoulders and appreciate the irony of life. It relieves us, challenges us and changes us. The next few pages detail the rise of a 49-year-old Kansas native whose comedic presence preserves the art of humor as we know it. A man who embraces life, on- and offscreen—one laugh at a time.

Ladies and gentlemen, Rob Riggle.

C

Comedic actor, United States veteran, mayor of Funner, CA and father of two—Riggle is no slouch when it comes to breadth of experience. His knack for laughs, however, dates back to his childhood vacations at his family’s lake house in the Ozarks and his days in high school, where he was voted “most humorous” by his classmates. “I don’t know if I ever knew I was funny. I just knew I got reactions,” remembers Riggle. With no TV at the lake house, Riggle found alternative ways to amuse himself. “In the evening, my sister and I and my cousins, would entertain the adults by putting on skits. Then we’d pass the hat...and we’d, you know, make money—quarters and dollars and whatever.” Being the youngest of the bunch, Riggle had little say in his own character choices, playing whatever role his cousins assigned. “They’d say, ‘Rob you come in and you’re the whatever’ and I would go, ‘Okay!’” Riggle mimics, with an obedient, child-like inflection. As a child of the ‘80s, Riggle grew up watching comedic giants in fan-favorites like Caddyshack, Ghostbusters and Stripes. “I always appreciated comedic acting and watching those guys. It brought me such joy, and it was something I always wanted to do,” says Riggle. Unlike most other comedians, Riggle earned his pilot’s license and served 23 years in the United

States Marine Corps as a public and civil affairs officer, traveling to places like Liberia, Albania and Afghanistan. “We were shot at. Being exposed to that kind of stuff happens these days; it doesn’t matter what your job is,” Riggle explains. After nine years of active duty, Riggle switched to the ground side to free up his schedule and give comedy a go. “I didn’t have much training in [comedic acting], but I just knew I loved it and wanted to try it,” says Riggle. Now known for his roles in hits like The Hangover and Step Brothers, as well as his stints on “Saturday Night Live” and as a correspondent on “The Daily Show,” Riggle learned that his switch from combat to comedy was no misstep. “Most people go through life and you never get to be obnoxious—you shouldn’t be. But when you get an excuse to be obnoxious, it’s the greatest gift in the world,” he says with a grin. If you recall, Riggle's overly hostile character Randy in Step Brothers is just that—obnoxious, frequently punctuating Brennan's younger and more successful brother Derek's sentences with "POW!" But for any comic, there is a learning curve when it comes to knowing if and when to cross the line. “When you’re young and you’re starting out, you don’t know what boundaries are, and you don’t know what works and what doesn’t, so you just kind of throw it against the wall,” Riggle explains. “You learn the subtleties [as you go] and how to dial it up or dial it down.”

Go Chiefs!

•When in Kansas City, Riggle’s go-to spot to watch the Chiefs is at Brick and Mortar on 75th and Broadway. When in SoCal, Harrah’s Resort Socal’s poker room is his ideal spot to play cards and watch the game.

Corps to Comedy

•While there is no direct link between comedy and the Marine Corps, Riggle credits intangibles like mental toughness and how to handle rejection as a means of preparation for show business.

A Serious Side

•Riggle starred in a movie called Midnight Sun where he took on a more dramatic role as Bella Thorne’s father.

Rules for Rehearsal

•According to Riggle, three unwritten rules in the acting industry are “show up on time, know your lines and don’t chew up the scenery”—a term used to describe when someone’s performance is overpowering.

While it’s no secret he has mastered the role of the “comedic jerk,” Riggle’s favorite role to play is “arrogant ignorance,” which, in his words, is “large and in charge but totally wrong-headed.” This may ring a bell when it comes to his role in Hollywood’s bachelor-party-gone-wrong classic, The Hangover, where Riggle plays Officer Franklin, a sadistic, taser-happy cop. “I always enjoy watching that type of person on screen, so I always enjoy playing that type of character,” says Riggle. And while his portrayal of a jerk on screen is nothing short of priceless, and at times believable, he has managed to form lasting friendships with his costars. In the iconic Step Brothers Catalina Wine Mixer scene, Riggle fondly recalls a snippet of his character Randy (that was cut from the film due to length) where his friendship with fellow actor Jake Johnson blossomed.

W

“We shot these fantasy sequences...where everybody kinda drifts away to their fantasy. They made one for me, but my fantasy sequence for my character was...in a high school locker room and Jake Johnson was a dealer, and I was buying my first set of steroids from him,” Riggle laughs. “That was a happy moment. And Jake looked ridiculous.” Since their locker room exchange, Riggle and Johnson remain good friends on- and off-screen, working on films like Let’s Be Cops, web series “Kuganauto” and Netflix animated show “Hoops”—set to release in 2020. “He’s just funny, relaxed, cool and we vibe,” says Riggle. Prompting laughs from viewers is no problem for someone like Riggle, but when it comes to his own kids, he’s just like every other dad. “Early in the morning, when I’m driving [my kids] to school and they are super cranky...I sing the words to their songs wrong and drive them nuts,” he says with a smirk. “I know what I’m doing. I love to watch them spin.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 45

“ “You’re holding 50,000 volts little man; don’t be afraid to ride the lightning!” — R O B R I G G L E AS O F F I C E R F R A N K L I N , T H E H A N G O V E R May 15, 2019 marked the start of a new era for this funny family man as he entered the world of “politics.” Donning a lustrous purple suit with gold embellishments, Riggle took the stage and welcomed his leadership role as mayor of Funner, CA. And as you could have guessed, the inauguration ceremony was nothing short of extravagant. From moonwalks and flamethrowers to zebras, giraffes and llamas, Harrah’s Resort Southern California sure knew how to make a mayor feel welcome. “They actually lit the pool on fire for a brief minute,” says Riggle. “It was a big deal. It was a BIIIIIG deal.”

M

But the fun(ner) didn’t stop there. The celebration featured a harpist, gold confetti cannons and stacks of decadent donuts and desserts. “They had all kinds of great food—most of it had gold in it. Which is all I asked for,” he smirks. “I kept it real simple; I said ‘Put gold in the food.’” Since his inauguration, Riggle has introduced an abundance of “funner” aspects at Harrah’s Resort Southern California. From launching a collection of cabana packages at Dive—the BrunchBana, the BabeBana and the BroBana—to introducing themed culinary specials including the Riggle’s Regal Donut and Riggle’s Go-To Chili Mac and Cheese, he has established his mayoral flair and propensity for fun. Riggle also implemented the Mayoral Hotline, where guests can dial ext. 4242 and select from a menu of options, including Mayoral Life Tips, bedtime stories and the mayor's favorite sounds from Funner. And when it comes to making the most of your stay, Riggle puts it best: “You gotta lay all your troubles at the door... They’ll be waiting for ya when you leave. And when you’re here, it’s all fun all the time.” As a man with an affection for the outrageous and a slew of absurdly iconic lines, a simple stroll down the street for Riggle is anything but ordinary. “People yell [my lines] at me all the time in the weirdest places,” he giggles. “It’s usually ‘POW!’ from Step Brothers and ‘In the face!’ from The Hangover. I also get a lot of ‘Not you, fat Jesus,’ and ‘You’re

holding 50,000 volts little man, don’t be afraid to ride the lightning!’” Just like the rest of us, Riggle too enjoys a good laugh. And when he’s not the one in front of the camera, there are a handful of comics who make even him laugh. From stand-ups like Sarah Tiana and Adam Carolla to the entire cast of “The Office,” Riggle makes time to not only study his craft, but revel in the talent that surrounds him. “I really respect all comedians… Everybody has people they gravitate toward more than others, and I’m like that too. But I love the fact that they are out there doing it,” says Riggle. When it comes to flexing his funny bone, Riggle has no plans of slowing his roll. With an unannounced movie in the works, another season of ABC’s extreme mini-golf series “Holey Moley” (featuring Steph Curry) and working on a new pilot for CBS that he will star in and produce, his future plans are bold and bright. You can also check out his new show on Discovery, “Rob Riggle: Global Investigator,” that was recently released in February 2020. Aside from his pursuit of comedy and current projects, Riggle continues to work with a variety of organizations that support veterans and their families. “I do my own golf tournament called the Rob Riggle InVETational up in Westlake Village to raise money for the Semper Fi fund, which was started by a bunch of Marine wives right out here in Camp Pendleton. They do amazing work,” says Riggle. With numerous accomplishments under his belt, giving back to those who serve is something that will always be a part of his life. “Once a Marine, always a Marine. I feel a need to continue to give.” No matter where he finds himself, Riggle continues to grace people with his outlandish on-screen personas, his humble charm and his heart for humor. "Comedy brings infinite joy into people’s lives. Just imagine a world without comedy or laughter—no thanks! Laughter is the best medicine... I take great pride in what I’m doing with my life!”

“I am proud to say that I can trace every seafood item on our menu back to its origin. —Chef Jojo Ruiz

Name: Jojo Ruiz Job Title: Executive Chef, Lionfish

Gaslamp Quarter

Seafood restaurants are a dime a dozen in San Diego, but Lionfish—located in the Gaslamp Quarter—certainly stands apart from its contemporaries. A funky two-story establishment with dark blue hues and cast-iron fixtures, Lionfish is one of only three Smart Catch-certified restaurants in San Diego and a fervent promoter of ethical food sourcing. This position is not one that Executive Chef Jojo Ruiz takes lightly. “I am proud to say that I can trace every seafood item on our menu back to its origin,” he says. “I want to teach diners about sustainability with seafood, our oceans, and for them to learn from the cuisine we create. It’s why I believe I was led in the direction of being a chef— to make a change.”

E | Written By: Sarah Hood | Photographed By: Julie Jones

To that end, Lionfish gathers much of its fresh fish and locally grown produce from nearby farmers markets, utilizing whichever items are in season. Lionfish also partners with sustainable hatcheries, such as Pacifico Aquaculture in Mexico. “People usually think of farm fish as a negative thing, but it’s actually good for the environment,” he explains. “If we keep eating wild fish exclusively, they might go extinct.” Furthermore, Lionfish promotes eco-friendly dining by using recyclable to-go boxes, biodegradable straws, and silverware instead of single-use plastics and Styrofoam.

E Is for Ecological SUSTAINABILITY IS KEY AT LIONFISH IN THE HEART OF THE GASLAMP QUARTER

The menu at Lionfish evolves on a regular basis, depending on the season. One of Chef Ruiz’s favorites is the Sashimi salad with local seaweed, Japanese cucumbers, and Dashi pickled onions. He calls this dish “fresh, beautiful and using the best of the best products from the farmers market and all our sustainable fish from the sushi case.”

East Village

L u East Village's neighborhood restaurant and butcher shop, Cowboy Star combines contemporary American cuisine with a western flare. Co-founders John and Angie Weber based Cowboy Star’s design around a Hollywood western theme, as seen through the cow-skulls, the photographs of classic country music stars and the portraits of midwestern landscapes mounted on the rustic brick walls. The restaurant’s friendly staff goes the extra mile to accommodate patrons with dietary restrictions, meaning individuals on the lowsugar, high-protein keto diet are in safe hands. Cowboy Star’s ribeye steak is dry-aged for roughly one month to create a delicious, surprisingly juicy cut with minimal seasoning. This dish is typically served with mashed potatoes, but for a keto-friendly option, try it with the Carrots Confit topped with chimichurri sauce or the roasted Brussels sprouts served with apples and a sweet maple vinaigrette dressing. While Cowboy Star is considered high-end compared to other steakhouses, the expense is justified, given that the restaurant prides itself on only using ethically sourced products, such as USDA approved prime angus cuts and certified fresh fish under the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Standards. Boasting highquality steak, locally sourced produce, and top-of-the-line customer service, Cowboy Star provides the perfect place to stick to your keto habits but enjoy a fine-dining experience.

DR. PETER LEE is a renowned plastic surgeon and also the Founder and CEO of Wave Plastic Surgery Center, the largest practice of its kind in the nation. Wave took Southern California with such success that a new facility recently opened in San Francisco, with even more on the horizon. Dr. Lee uses his business to help bring more options to more people, paying special attention to individualized patient care. It’s safe to say that your beauty is in good hands with Dr. Lee and the team of doctors at Wave!

At the age of 14, Dr. Lee began attending a university for a special physics program, but before long, he decided that he wanted to work with something more tangible. Dr. Lee then turned his focus to medical school, in an effort to make a difference in peoples’ lives. He says, “[Plastic surgery] is not just medicine and science, but art and creativity as well—it all goes hand in hand.” Now, Dr. Lee is an award-winning plastic surgeon with international acclaim. He also travels to teach microsurgery, with an emphasis on minimal incision. Dr. Lee has a unique perspective on plastic surgery that rebuffs the pervasive vanity stereotype of the industry. He (and Wave, by extension) believes that cosmetic surgeries are primarily about increasing a patient’s quality of life. Having the ability to fix your flaws with surgery allows people to gain confidence and shed whatever insecurities they carry. According to Dr. Lee’s personal philosophy, “Aesthetic treatments are a cure for a lot of people who aren’t as confident, and when you do something to make yourself look better, it changes who you are.” 84 LOCALE MAGAZINE

“Wave covers all spectrums, and we offer the most realistic, honest expectations.” —DR. PETER LEE

ONWARD AND UPWARD • Wave has set its sights on expansion and plans to open up locations in the South and East Bay—after that, the company is off to take on the Big Apple! SPEC-TACULAR SOLUTIONS • At Wave Plastic Surgery Center, there’s a large focus on providing care for Asian-predominant surgeries like the double eyelid procedure. Dr. Lee saw a need for this specialization in the industry.

While Dr. Lee has worked with sick patients in the past and has even performed reconstructive surgery for people suffering from cancer, he enjoys his current occupation because, “In the cosmetic realm, you’re not sick—you’re healthy. You’re looking for improvement.” Dr. Lee sees the curative function of plastic surgery in his work, which he believes is often overlooked since the changes that occur appear only on the outside. What the common observer cannot see in cosmetic surgery patients are changes to their everyday happiness. “The gratification of increasing a patient’s quality of life is what I enjoy,” Dr. Lee explains. Whether you want to lose a few extra pounds or that wonky family nose you inherited, it’s important to never let the small things keep you from going out and enjoying life. As Dr. Lee puts it, “When we stop doing things is when we get older.” Dr. Lee’s spirit of improving a patient’s quality of life through cosmetic surgery translates over to the company model as well. Wave Plastic Surgery Center recognizes the importance of well-informed and singularized cosmetic surgery care, from the first interview to the last checkup. “We invest heavily in a variety of options,” explains

LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS • Wave Plastic Surgery Center has locations in Los Angeles, Irvine, Rowland Heights, Arcadia and San Francisco. Pop by for a 30-minute consultation with an expert plastic surgeon if you think cosmetic surgery might help improve your quality of life.

“[Plastic surgery] is not just medicine and science, but art and creativity as well—it all goes hand in hand.” —DR. PETER LEE

Dr. Lee, which is why Wave Plastic Surgery Center is set up to allow for specifically designed individual care, the likes of which are rare in cosmetic surgery clinics. Since Wave is so much larger than other plastic surgery companies, they can offer a much wider selection of procedures which, in turn, gives patients a chance to sit down and decide on the absolute best path for their foray into cosmetic alterations. “Something we stress [at Wave] is to feel out and get an answer from the patient,” he says. Dr. Lee and the doctors at Wave Plastic Surgery Center are aiming to do more with their skills than just alter a patient’s physical appearance— they want to empower people by giving them the control to change parts of themselves that hold them back in life. Wave has doctors from different backgrounds with varying realms of experience, but all of them are there for one reason: to help their patients experience life exactly the way they want to experience it. Dr. Lee’s humanistic approach to cosmetic surgery, as well as his success in his field, has opened a platform where anyone has the power to change anything they don’t like about themselves. “Wave covers all spectrums,” says Dr. Lee, “and we offer the most realistic, honest expectations.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 85

Street Dreams JASON HUGGINS TURNED HIS PASSION INTO A PROFESSION WITH SAN DIEGO STREETWEAR LABEL 5&A DIME WRITTEN BY: KERI BRIDGWATER PHOTOGRAPHED BY: BHADRI KUBENDRAN “I heard somewhere that when it comes to business, you either have to be the first to do something or the best one doing it,” says Huggins, who, together with sister Darcie, opened East Village streetwear store 5&A DIME in the mid-2000s.

lows of running a small business, including the addition of Darcie’s popular The Goodstuff Cookie Co. in 2014. “There have been some steep learning curves for sure––my biggest regret was waiting so long to make 5&A DIME a brand. We did the store first, branding second; but since 2015, have focused solely on our apparel line.”

Initially selling designer toys, books and apparel as a third part of the equation, Huggins’ cool “sis and bro show” dynamic has seen the duo ride out a recession, oversaturated streetwear market and rise of e-commerce throughout their 15 years in business. “When we opened in 2005, it was a case of the right time, right place,” he says. “5&A DIME was the only store from here to LA where you could get labels like Crooks & Castles, The Hundreds and Rogue Status. On some release days, we’d make $5,000-$6,000 in sales and thought, ‘Hey, this is easy!’”

While Huggins’ coordinates production, Darcie and her boyfriend are behind the eyecatching graphics, often working with local creatives and social collectives like The Travelers Club, Tito Boy, Locals Only, Never Made and tattoo artist Sergio Hernandez, aka “Splurgeo.”

A passion for collaboration and foresight to diversify helped Huggins adapt and navigate the highs and

5&A DIME’s classic stack logo is still a top seller, but limited-edition drops and special runs always go fast. Despite the street cred cachet, there are no “too cool for school” vibes at the store. “At the end of the day, 5&A DIME is a family business–– my mom, dad, sister and I built this together. We always have and always will make shopping here a personal experience.”

Old School • A Sacramento native, Huggins grew up around the West Coast snowboard, skateboard and BMX scenes. After moving to San Diego in the mid-’90s, he cut his teeth in retail, working at Jim Ruonala’s legendary PB skate shop, Pacific Drive. In a town where people love wearing flip-flops, five guys had an idea to revolutionize an overlooked everyday accessory. In 2009, socks were an underappreciated apparel category. Aaron Hennings—along with Jeff Kearl, Ryan Kingman, John Wilson and Taylor Shupe—saw an opportunity to inject personality into a product that would allow people to show self-expression. Soon enough, Stance was born and has changed the way we dress our feet ever since. 90 LOCALE MAGAZINE

“ WE WANTED TO ESTABLISH STANCE IN THE WORLD OF PERFORMANCE SOCKS BY SHOWCASING OUR PRODUCTS ON SOME OF THE MOST DEMANDING ATHLETES IN THE WORLD.” — AARON HENNINGS

One Wheel? No Problem • Each team member has talents, but not all of them can do circus tricks. Hennings continues to impress his staff with his unicycle skills!

“Socks were the last piece of apparel on the human body that didn’t have a branded category leader,” Hennings says, “so we figured it was time to claim it.” The idea to create Stance was rooted in the belief that an ignored product category could be disrupted and brought to life with a heavy dose of creativity. “We knew that great brands become category leaders by disrupting markets that have been neglected, asleep and ripe for innovation,” says Hennings. Hennings and his partners have deep roots in the surfand-sport apparel industry.

Prior to diving into the sock and underwear industry, he served as Art Director at Billabong for nine years. When deciding on a name for the business, the men focused on the connection to feet. “Stance has a double meaning for us, referencing both the physical positioning of the legs and feet during activities like skateboarding and basketball, as well as being an intellectual or emotional

attitude,” shares Hennings. The deeper meaning of Stance shines through at the company headquarters in San Clemente. There is space for employees to play and physically express themselves, whether it be on the skate ramp or the volleyball court. There are also more traditional artistic expressions throughout the space, such as murals, paintings and photographs. But the most unexpected feature at Stance headquarters? It would have to be “a custom-built Harley Davidson ’58 Panhead motorcycle parked in our front reception area...leaking oil,” says Hennings. The mantra of Stance is to embrace “the uncommon thread.” Within the first five years of business, they’ve helped turn socks into one of the most popular accessories worldwide. You can find Stance in 40 countries and counting,

“ WE WANTED TO BUILD A COMPANY THAT WAS A REFLECTION OF OUR PERSONALITIES AND CREATE A PLATFORM FOR THE THINGS WE LOVED.” — AARON HENNINGS

igniting global creativity. “We wanted to build a company that was a reflection of our personalities and create a platform for the things we loved,” shares Hennings. “Stance was born as partbusiness opportunity, part-fashion movement and part-entrepreneurial undertaking.” In 2015, Stance laid new ground by becoming the first official sock of the NBA. “We wanted to establish Stance in the world of performance socks by showcasing our products on some of the most demanding athletes in the world,” explains Hennings. “Basketball has a connection to both on-court performance and sneaker culture. The NBA was interested in our ability to provide a product to both markets.” Stance continues to provide the league’s 30 teams with branded designs, which are available for fans through retail outlets.

The mantra of Stance is to embrace “the uncommon thread.” “We are working with Chicago-based graphic design artist Cody Hudson as part of our ‘Untitled’ collection,” Hennings shares. Donovan Mitchell, a Utah Jazz player who is the latest Stance brand ambassador, is working with the company on limited edition socks that feature his favorite emoji and his own personal Spida logo. After all the success, Stance continues to be wellgrounded. “The greatest rewards have been the ability to bring creative ideas to fruition as well as build a brand and working environment that provides

deliverance from corporate confinement,” Hennings says. Is there any compliment that still gets Hennings fired up? Fans will send in photos of their new tattoos featuring the Stance argyle logo and tell the team how much they admire the brand. Now that’s modern brand loyalty! Consider yourself a Stance fan? Then get ready for oneof-a-kind products in 2020. Stance has some incredible technologies launching this year, featuring enhanced fabrics that place an emphasis on durability and softness. We’re ready for all the feels.

Northern Native • Though Hennings grew up playing on Orange County beaches like Trestles and San Onofre, he calls Canada his second home, given the fact that he is half Canadian. LOCALE MAGAZINE 91

ARTISTIC MEDIUM

Arrieta’s various, lively paintings are made using two main mediums: acrylic watercolor and gouache paint, which is an opaque watercolor typically used by commercial artists for illustrations and design work.

ARTIST CAROLINA ARRIETA MERGES PASSION AND CREATIVITY WITH BRIGHT, BOLD DESIGNS WRITTEN BY: ISABELLA COOK PHOTOGRAPHED BY: MICHAEL WESLEY

Carolina Arrieta always knew she wanted to pursue a career in the arts. At 28 years old, Arrieta has successfully done just that. Not only does she produce visually stunning paintings celebrating the female form, but Arrieta also co-owns a baby clothing company, called Wild Wawa, with her mother and sister. She combines her knowledge of art and fashion to produce a unique artistic style that you can’t help but appreciate, no matter the medium. “I grew up knowing for sure I’d do something creative,” states Arrieta. Though Arrieta was born in LA, she spent most of her formative years living in Peru with her family. Her parents also owned a baby clothing operation, and Arrieta fondly remembers the intricate

embroidery her mother would sew into the items. After high school, Arrieta returned to the US for an education in fashion. “I always painted,” recalls Arrieta, “especially when I was in fashion school.” She took this passion for painting to art school where she studied illustration design at Art Center of Design in Pasadena. Now Arrieta combines art and fashion by hand-painting designs for Wild Wawa. As Arrieta says, “It’s bringing my art into the fabric.” Her favorite part of being in the industry is being able to see her work not just in a painting, but on people as well. On top of co-owning a successful clothing company, Arrieta also creates paintings for art shows, commissions and more. She draws inspiration from growing up in Peru along with her travels since then. Arrieta enjoys painting female forms the most and uses this passion

before digitizing them. In Arrieta’s words, “It’s nice to keep that handcrafted touch in there.”

to bring representation to strong, confident women through art. “I don’t really tend to plan my paintings—it’s very organic,” she says. Rather than having a regular painting schedule, Arrieta paints when she wants to and when she has the time. She describes her schedule as highly flexible. “Some days, I’ll do an entire day of painting, eight to 10 hours—it’s meditative,” she explains. Arrieta plans to continue to pursue both her career in painting and her role at Wild Wawa, where they’ll soon begin designing and selling clothing for women and children. You can support Arrieta and her art by following her on social media or by commissioning or purchasing her work. There’s certainly more amazing art to come, and Arrieta has no plans of stopping anytime soon: “It’s all I’ve ever known. I love it.”

The motto of San Diego’s Tacos Libertad is “tacos for good,” which pretty much sums up the philanthropic business model behind these delicious street-style tacos. While customers order and eat as usual, the restaurant takes the profits and donates them to an anonymously chosen charity every month. Leslie Cohn, co-founder of the Cohn Restaurant Group, and Jeff Pitroff, operations manager at Tacos Libertad, are the people behind this charitable operation. Anyone looking for a unique and all-around feel-good dining experience needs to get down to Tacos Libertad for both the food and the cause.

The restaurant itself is located on busy University Avenue in Hillcrest, and a line is often seen sprawling out the door and onto the curb. With the delicious smell of street tacos done right, along with trendy yet comfortable decor indoors, it’s easy to see why Tacos Libertad is a local favorite. Customers can order their tacos in the front of the restaurant and eat there or head to the backroom—a glamorous speakeasy that’s perfect for sipping drinks and savoring tacos. Tacos Libertad is also conveniently located near several bars, making it the perfect pit stop for a night on the town! Tacos Libertad was founded nearly three years ago and has since helped over 30 charities. Their mission? To make the world a better place, one taco at a time. “We wanted to focus on one charity each month,” explains Cohn. So each month, a charity is selected to receive a donation of at least $3,000 guaranteed. If Tacos Libertad makes more than the minimum, the excess goes to the charity, and if they make less than the minimum, they still ensure the monthly charity receives its full donation. Tacos Libertad has raised over $108,000 for charity so far, and that number is growing larger with each taco sold. Among the numerous charities benefitting from Tacos Libertad is the Center for Gender Affirming Care, which received almost $12,000 in July 2019 in celebration of Pride. “It was pretty amazing,” declared Pitroff. Since the Hillcrest Pride Parade marches by the Tacos Libertad storefront every year, the restaurant and its team members hold the issue close to heart. “With the buzz and excitement, you can tell Hillcrest is very community-oriented,” says Pitroff. “It’s

such a fun little spot, and everyone’s got so much life and character!” The concept of tacos for charity almost seems too good to be true, but Tacos Libertad is as real as the tacos they sell. Anyone out there wondering how they can get involved and help the community, swing by Tacos Libertad for a mouthwatering meal. And even if a taco or two doesn’t seem like a big donation, rest assured, they add up. “People think they can’t make a difference,” explains Cohn, “but tacos are $4.50!” There’s no better feeling than eating a good meal for a good cause, and it’s up to the hungry people of San Diego to get out there and eat tacos for charity. “We can’t do this without the community,” Pitroff says, “and we’re so appreciative.”

WRITTEN BY: BEN HITCH • PHOTOGRAPHED BY: KAMBRIA FISCHER Surfer pro Mele Saili is a toes-on-the-nose and acrylics-on-canvas kind of girl. Born and raised in and around San Diego, always close to the beach, Saili has come to be of common tongue in both the surf and art world.

Surfer pro Mele Saili is a toeson-the-nose and acrylics-oncanvas kind of girl.

It would’ve seemed fitting for Saili to be riding the waves before she could walk with her family’s surfing heritage, but at the time, the sport seemed too familiar. “[My family’s surfing background] is exactly what kept me away from the beach,” she says. But at the age of 13, Saili finally dove in and from those first few swells, she’s been traveling the world, representing and surfing for herself. Out of the water but never far from the beach, Saili finds peace and a breath of fresh air away from the surf through art. Beyond her family’s artistic background, Saili draws inspiration from artists like the

talented photographer and painter Ed Templeton, street artist Barry McGee and Margaret Kilgallen—a contemporary graffiti artist and painter. Their collections moved her to incorporate acrylics and charcoal into her own art. When it comes to her personal style, she says, “I guess I’d call it weird; I really like fine lines like in good tattoo.” And where it may seem natural for surfing and art to coexist, Saili uses art to find different means of expression than she might out on the water. And even if the ocean froze over, she admits, “I’d still be by the beach, I love the forest meets the water perspective.” On her days off, just like you and me, you can find Saili on the couch watching Johnny Tsunami or scrolling through the popular Instagram “wipeout” account @kookslams—which she may or may not have made an appearance on back in the day.

Close Call • Saili had a bull shark breach within feet of her while waiting for the next set, proving to be one of her scariest moments on the water. Born for the Beach • Even if the ocean froze over, Saili would still be near the beach with a “forest meets the water perspective.”

If this setting sounds even slightly familiar, then it’s time to brighten up your workspace. Numerous scientific studies show there is a direct link between decreased employee stress levels in relation to displaying greenery around the office. In fact, when plants are present, individuals typically feel more at ease, resulting in increased productivity and motivation. So, why not include greenery in your office?

I

Sure, not all of us are gifted with green thumbs, but luckily, the creative team at Santa Ana’s Instant Jungle International is. Specializing in an array of plant types, including tropical foliage, traditional plants and even silk creations, Instant Jungle is a full-service wholesale and retail nursery that provides both interior and exterior designs, plant installation and plant maintenance. Interior Sales Representative Carol Grandy offers the 411 on the services this local exotic plant kingdom provides, along with advice on where to begin when developing a personal green haven. For those who may be more horticulturally challenged than others, it would be wise to opt for a plant that requires less maintenance. Grandy explains, “There are some plants that don’t require water on a weekly basis; however, they should be dusted, checked for pests and have any yellow or brown leaves removed.” She notes that dracaenas and pothos are easy to keep alive as they are very adaptable to interior conditions. Another important factor to take into consideration is the amount of natural light available in the intended space. Many indoor plants do not require an abundance of natural light, but some is certainly needed. On that note, some plants should be avoided entirely. “Anything that is meant to grow outside in full sun will not survive inside. You cannot acclimate an olive or citrus tree to interior conditions no matter how much your decorator wants you to!” says Grandy. Aside from aesthetic appeal, Grandy explains that these plush assortments also bring added benefits to individuals— mentally and physically! “There was a study by the University of Queensland in 2014 that found plants increase productivity [at] work by 15%,” Grandy notes. The study concluded that by incorporating plants in the workspace, employers were showing their employees that they cared about their welfare. “Plants create a more comfortable and enjoyable workspace,” Grandy says. 120 LOCALE MAGAZINE

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE GREEN AND SERENE Transform Your Workspace With Instant Jungle’s Tropical Foliage Installations

Believe it or not, beautifying the office by adding some decorative floral flair—married with varying shades of nature’s greens—can go a long way in transforming a dull workspace into a colorful, happy place. “We can customize any [arrangement] to fit our clients’ needs,” Grandy says. If you’d prefer to leave it to the experts, its 40 years of experience and extensively trained technicians make Instant Jungle your go-to for design consultation, installation and maintenance. Here, Grandy takes us step-by-step into the creation process of a wall installation piece for an office.

Step 1:

• It’s important to first get a feel for the space you are working with. Style, layout and mood all play a role in creating the desired ambiance. “I met with our clients to tour their facility and get a read on what they envisioned in their building,” Grandy explains. “I assessed the light levels, measured the spaces in each location, made notes and took pictures.” She recommends to “select something that fits the space and will survive with the amount of lighting available.”

Step 2:

• Once the overall look and feel has been determined, brainstorm ideas of the best plant options that will work in the space. “I was able to make several suggestions to them on the spot and [the clients] were very receptive,” Grandy says.

Step 4:

• Confirm which options are available and begin pairing your plants with complimenting accents. Grady says, “I sent our client images of several plant wall designs, so they could choose the plant pallet that they liked best [and] that would survive on their walls.”

Step 5:

• Finalize, install and maintain! “Plant maintenance is very important!” Grady explains that regular weekly maintenance is best, so try and make it part of your weekly routine. “Check and maintain the plant first thing Monday morning when you arrive…or make it the last thing you do on Friday before you leave.”

Step 3:

• Begin mapping out the plant of attack. “I went back to the office and selected which wall systems would work best in each location, along with containers and the right plane for each space.”

Dream (Home) Come True THE KAMINSKIY TEAM IS HERE TO MAKE YOUR REMODELING DREAMS A MAGNIFICENT REALIT Y

WRITTEN BY: DIEGO E. GAXIOLA PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: KAMINSKIY DESIGN AND REMODELING

It all started with a modest sketch on a piece of paper for the owners of 18555 Polvera Dr, a one-acre property located in the rolling hills of Rancho Bernardo. With a vision needing guidance from a trustworthy expert, Kaminskiy Design and Remodeling was the first to come to mind, a highly reputable San Diego-based designand-build remodeling company. The Kaminskiy team helped design and remodel a home that would provide both an ideal atmosphere to raise a family and ample living space to entertain guests. They took on big design aspirations, quickly turning wild remodeling dreams into a truly magnificent reality.

RECORDBREAKING RESULTS Ò The gorgeous

home sold quickly after the remodel and surpassed the sales record by about 15% for the highest price ever sold per square foot in The Trails.

THE SMARTEST WAY TO LIVE Ò Kaminskiy

believes making your home a “smart home” is a fabulous investment during a renovation. Automating processes and creating “scenes” that can be activated with one push of a button is something that anyone can appreciate.

Kaminskiy Design and Remodeling was founded in March 2005 by husbandand-wife duo Sergei and Elena Kaminskiy, with the fundamental mission of providing the best customer service possible through consistent contact and superb communication. What distinguishes Kaminskiy from other design and remodeling companies is their personalized approach throughout the life of a remodeling project. The Kaminskiy team always begins with an in-home design consultation to achieve a better understanding of what their clients wish to achieve. For this home particularly, they were faced with a big problem: though the home was just over 3,400 square feet in size, the dark wood-planked ceilings and walls separating the various living spaces made the home feel less spacious than it really was.

K

Kaminskiy’s design specialists then further discussed key details that were to be included in the home. At the Kaminskiy state-of-the-art design center, the team presented the proposed plans and reviewed the elements that would be incorporated into the design. Sergei explains one of the main focuses of the home renovation by stating, “The inspiration behind this home was to create an open living concept while utilizing modern design elements. The goal was to create the perfect home for entertaining and raising a family at the same time.” Pleased with the proposed plans, the homeowners gave the green light for phase one of the renovation process: the demolition. To successfully deliver spectacular results, Kaminskiy Design thoroughly addressed every

aspect of the living space, beginning with the front entrance of the residence. Originally, the home’s front entrance lacked grandeur, failing to accentuate the sheer beauty of the rest of the property. Sergei and his team proposed adding a bright and elegant entryway upon entering the home. He explains, “The foyer area was an addition that we built to give the home a better first impression and more grand entry.” The completed foyer provides guests with a magnificent first look into the home, complete with light gray walls and a breathtaking chandelier marking the center of the space. Choosing pieces that are not just beautiful, but also timeless, is something Kaminskiy Design takes into consideration when taking on a project. The foyer’s sumptuous design shifts guests’ focus into the heart of the home—the central great room, which is an ideal place to entertain. The large great room was an area that Kaminskiy’s team truly transformed, turning what felt like a quaint, dated room into a vibrant central gathering space. The great room itself consists of a relaxing fireplace, sitting area and a formal dining space. An opulent chandelier hangs above the dining area, providing the space with a touch of glamour while still staying true to the overall contemporary feel. Sergei gives insight into the team’s reasoning behind the design: “By installing recessed lighting into the ceiling and painting the wood planks white, it helped make the space much brighter and more inviting. Removing the walls that separated the space helped create the open-space concept we were going for and made the space perfect for entertaining.” In addition, the team removed the dated flooring in the great room and kitchen,

replacing it with much more inviting hickory-engineered flooring. The kitchen was another area of the home that had true potential but was in need of a major facelift. The removal of the soffits in the kitchen area helped bring in even more natural light from the newly installed windows and doors that lined the space. “All of the doors and windows were replaced with dual-pane, energyefficient windows and doors,” states Sergei. The kitchen was tastefully designed to incorporate a large island that’s perfect for cooking and entertaining guests. The juxtaposition of white and brown cabinetry was a design touch that added a modern flair to the kitchen area. Though each and every room in the fourbedroom, four-bathroom residence was exquisitely renovated, the master bedroom is a part of the home that will truly take your breath away. Upon entering, you are met with a luxurious sanctuary, complete with high ceilings, an enlarged walk-in closet and spalike master bathroom. From lavish quartzite on the bathroom wall to high-grade porcelain lining the shower, no detail was spared in the space. The walk-in master shower was also turned into a steam room, complete with aromatherapy and aesthetically pleasing chromatherapy lighting. With a virtually endless amount of amenities, it is hard to imagine leaving the beautiful home. Taking on even the smallest home remodel— let alone an entire home renovation— may seem like quite a daunting task. However, having Kaminskiy Design and Remodeling experts on hand to help guide you throughout a project is sure to yield worthwhile results.

Experience the miracle of the Mud Mor Wrap, a 55-minute detoxifying treatment that uses mud from an ancient Canadian lakebed. Who knows? You could be greeted by a family of moose as you soak up the pristine mountain views, blissfully meandering back to your cabin. DINE AND UNWIND

ADVENTURE AWAITS

• From sunrise to sunset, the cozy comfort of the Rustic Inn Bar & Bistro makes it a great place to gather and chill with friends. Enjoy a warm cup of coffee on the stunning outdoor patio or watch the sunset as you sip and savor your meal—and your day! The locally sourced menu features Americaninspired cuisine, including delicate panseared trout and mouthwatering bison tenderloin. Sip on a signature cocktail from the bar or perhaps a glass of award-winning red from the wine cellar. For all you early risers out there, don’t miss the gourmet daily breakfast buffet of eggs, crispy bacon and potatoes, along with a variety of pastries, fruits, coffee, teas and fresh juices.

• Just a short snow coach ride away from Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, adventure-seekers can enjoy the resort’s epic yearround outdoor activities. Hit the slopes and crush the powder with unlimited access to world-class skiing and snowboarding during winter; March into early April are ideal times for hiking, golfing or just lounging creekside with a fishing pole. “Even experienced anglers will be impressed by the size of the trout they can catch in our exclusive stretch of Flat Creek,” explains Rustic Inn Representative Courtney Carter. “We have also partnered with the Jackson Hole Fly Fishing School to offer fly fishing casting lessons for our more adventurous guests.”

• The crystal-clear waters of Flat Creek flow through the resort, helping to create a thriving natural habitat. You can enjoy a long walk around the wetlands or melt into a rocking chair in front of the fire to roast marshmallows. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of an elk! With the help of both local and national environmental organizations, “wildlife has returned to the property,” says Carter. And if experiencing the Old Faithful geyser or the Yellowstone Caldera is on your bucket list, you’re in luck—call up a free resort shuttle ‘cause Yellowstone National Park is only a short drive away.

Nestled just outside of downtown Jackson, this picturesque paradise sits on 12 beautiful acres, offering guests the finest in outdoor activities and wildlife fun.
