A NOTE FROM OUR

PUBLISHER This is the fifth time I have written my publisher's notes for our September issue. I had to pause after writing that for quite some time. How did 10 percent of my life go by in a flash? When I wrote this the first time, I had just left a perfectly good job, hired my first employee, Ashley Smith, and rented 400 square feet above Kéan Coffee. All while spending every waking hour of the previous 90 days selling advertisements, setting up delivery locations, taking pictures and preparing for our first launch party. I was exhilarated and exhausted. I was afraid and full of hope—I was naive. Upon reflection, I don't believe that any other cocktail of emotional and physical state would have propelled me through the first year. My first publisher’s notes were certainly influenced by my then nine year old son’s affection for the "Dork Diaries" as I described my perfect day. (See photo.) Looking back at what I thought was cool eight years ago is probably the same feeling you get when you see yourself in bedazzled True Religion jeans in (hopefully) an old photo. I can kind of remember why I thought those things were cool, but it was long before so many more cool things were available. So much has changed in San Diego since that first edition, beginning with my perception. My perfect day now looks very different. Our breakfast and brunch game has been elevated, and now with four different markets, I am as likely to be at brunch at Cody’s La Jolla as I am to be at The Mission. I still go to The Living Room Coffeehouse in La Jolla Cove, but there are at least five new coffee joints vying for the caffeine crown in North Park. Nightlife has switched to Oxford Social Club. I want to go paddle boarding, but I still don't have a board and not sure how much I would go if I did. I still love Hodad's, in fact, I had one this week, but I am now more likely to eat the PS Salad from Pacific Standard Kitchen.

My perfect day now includes: Ò Waking up early and sending emails. Ò A walk with the F-word (Fiancé). Ò Waking up Makena, taking her to singing lessons and tucking her into bed. Ò Chaperoning sleepovers of three or four girls and making coconut pancakes. Ò Searching for the perfect Instagram picture. Ò Motivating my sales team with longwinded speeches. Ò Flipping through a new issue our talented Art Director, Reilly, has finished. Ò Listening to editorial pitches. Ò Talking with my son about college. Ò Party planning like J-Lo in the Wedding Planner. Ò Trying out a new restaurant and breaking my habits. Ò Listening to new music—the newer, the better. Ò Planning vacations. Ò Snuggling on the couch with my family. Today is so much different, but it is still perfect. How did we get to eight years? Day by day. P.S. Speaking of change, my partner and COO, Ashley Smith, who married my longtime friend and Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Mike Smith, just had their first baby. We would like to welcome Scout Leo Smith, born June 7, 2017 at seven pounds, five ounces and 19 and a half inches to the LOCALE family.

That guy back then was overworked and stressed out at his previous job and just wanted a day to have fun. His perfect day was a day off. Scout Leo Smith 7lbs .5oz & 19.5 In

MAKING THE ISSUE I arrived at Salt Culture, a boutique owned by Rob Machado’s wife, Sophie, about 30 minutes prior to the actual interview with Machado. Growing up in Huntington Beach, Machado has always been an icon to the residents of Surf City, USA. I remember during the summers at the US Open, my friends and I would watch him compete and we'd storm the shore when he came out of the water to try and snap a picture with him on our flip-phones. His name is engraved on the Surfing Walk of Fame on Main Street and his face on the side of the surf shops lining PCH, but now I was given the chance to meet him. When Machado arrived, he was exactly what I expected—welcoming, warm and kind, complete with his famous, long, sun-kissed hair. All of my nerves that I previously had began to melt away as we walked inside the boutique. He mentioned how he helped his wife set up the store; a cozy, trendy shop that I could picture myself coming back to. “It’s pretty vibey, huh? I helped create this area,” he said. As we started talking, it felt as though I was talking with a friend, not someone who once held the title of the second highest ranked surfer in the world. At the start of the shoot, the photographer, Michael Wesley, mentioned to Machado, “I had a good omen on my way over here. A song from September Sessions came on,” a movie Machado starred in in the past. During the shoot, Wesley asked Machado to look directly in the camera. Machado did as asked, however reluctantly. He was humble and jokingly said how awkward he felt in front of the camera. Once we finished shooting at Salt Culture, we made our way to Swami’s, a local surf spot well known in the surf community. As we made the trek down the steep stairs that led to the beach, people stopped Machado to say hello. Rather than brush them off, he stopped and spoke with them patiently as though they were old friends. At the end of the staircase, Machado quickly changed and hopped in the water without skipping a beat. It would’ve taken me an extra 10 minutes to adjust to the cold water, but it was like second nature to him—this was where he belonged.

Dog’s Day Norbert the Dog is Bringing Smiles to Children’s Faces WRITTEN BY: VICTORIA RAMIREZ PHOTOGRAPHED BY: JOE NARDELLO

“Norbert is adorable and quirky, and I think both of those things combined make him an incredibly unique creature,” said his owner, Julie Steines. He snores very loudly, makes funny little sounds and even his gait is endearingly charming. Norbert’s signature trait is his tongue that sticks out due to a few missing teeth.

N

Norbert has a large following—the Norberthood—on Instagram at over 500,000 followers. Over time, Norbert gradually gained fame over Instagram for his stylish outfits, loving personality and cute appearance. “I think that the more that we put ourselves out there through volunteering and just posting fun and inspiring content, people like it, especially now with all of the hardships and unthinkable things that occur in the world, and Norbert provides an escape from that,” said Steines. Steines and Norbert emphasize that “Volunteering and doing our therapy work is the foundation of everything that Norbert embodies.” After relocating from Boston to Los Angeles, Norbert and Steines started looking for ways to get involved in their community. That’s when they came across the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. “It’s fantastic because I have first-hand experience on how those dog visits affect the patients, families and even the staff at a hospital,” said Steines.

LOCALE MAGAZINE

Steines explained, “Our priority is to simply bring the patients comfort and joy and we hope that the children are able to escape the reality of their circumstances of being in a hospital even if only for a few minutes.” Not only are these visits rewarding and important to the patients, but also to Norbert and the other therapy dogs. “I think they have a sense about them to know that they are making a difference as well.” His signature move is giving high-fives to everyone he meets. “Every patient visit is unique and special in its own way, but the most memorable aspect for us is leaving the patient smiling who maybe wasn’t as happy prior to our visit,” said Steines. Norbert is also the inspiration behind the Norbert book series that Steines and her mother, Dr. Virginia Freyermuth, have written and published through their publishing and education company, Polly Parker Press. They were inspired by Norbert’s story of finding his unique purpose in life, and after two years, the book was published in 2013 and two more books were later added to the series. In addition to volunteering at CHLA, Norbert’s other philanthropic involvements include supporting Los Angeles Mission, Lil BUB’s BIG FUND for the ASPCA, Just for Kids Sake Foundation and Boot Campaign. Norbert truly does embody the belief that no matter how big or small you are, you can make a positive difference.

One way Julie motivates Norbert to take a quality photo is with food or his favorite treat, organic turkey.

PLAY TIME

When Julie’s husband, Mark Steines, is done taking pictures, Norbert likes to unwind by playing with stinky socks, his favorite play toy.

DAYS OFF

Norbert’s favorite activities include spreading smiles and therapy visits, eating and taking naps on people’s laps.

FROM TRAPEZE FLYERS TO EXTREME SCOOTER RIDERS, THESE SEVEN EXPERTS ARE THE MOVERS AND SHAKERS OF SAN DIEGO

PHOTOGRAPHED BY: DAMIEN NOBLE ANDREWS, GREY LOCKWOOD, & JOSIE GONZALES

The world is full of remarkable people whose trials have created incredible stories. We found a collection of seven Do Experts that defy belief, living everyday right here in San Diego. Whether they fly trapeze at 84 years old, or create beautiful art that tells a story out of sugar, they inspire us by imparting an idea that we can all pursue what we dream of doing. They don't say anything about it being easy, and all embrace a similar grit that drives them forward when life gets hard. We embraced a chance to understand the philosophy within the remarkable, and listened to what they shared about becoming their best possible selves.

“HEALTHY EATING HABITS, ALWAYS HAVING EXERCISE IN YOUR LIFE AND MAKING WHAT YOU DO SOMETHING THAT YOU LOVE IS THE KEY.” —Betty Goedhart Photographed By: Damien Noble Andrews

BETTY GOEDHART 84-YEAR-OLD TRAPEZE FLYER

Q: You've ice skated, played polo for 15 years and mountain climbed among other things in your lifetime, but what makes a person try flying trapeze at the age of 78? Betty Goedhart: I remember my parents took me to a circus as a little girl. I saw the flyers and thought that must be the most wonderful feeling in the world! I told myself, if I ever get the chance, I’m doing it. I watched a class at Trapeze High in Del Mar at the fairgrounds, now it’s in Escondido, and I loved it! After trying it I’ve been going back ever since. I do it four times a week. I can hardly wait for those days when I fly.

that enjoyed simple, healthy food. And that has stayed with me all my life. Healthy eating habits, always having exercise in your life and making what you do something that you love is the key.

Q: What do people think about an 84-year-old that flies almost every morning? BG: When I first went I had a lot of comments like, ‘You’re gonna get hurt,’ and this is ‘really stupid’ to do at this point in my life. My coach Dave Ayers told me, ‘If you do this, and pay attention to what I’m saying, you’ll be alright.’ The main thing I like about Dave is safety is number one in his book.

Q: After flying trapeze, what's next for you? BG: I have thought about this. I do realize that I can’t do this forever. I belong to another keep fit club in San Diego. I go there twice a week. My workout is mostly stretching, and I work on silks. It’s super great to strengthen and stretch every muscle in my body, and that I can probably do forever. There’s always something you can do to enjoy where you are. I’m going to have fun with whatever I’m going to do!

Q: What is the key to a longer, healthier life? BG: I have been very fortunate that I grew up with a family 44 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Q: When are you joining the circus? BG: Well, I never really wanted to perform. It’s something that I can do for my health. And doing something that I really enjoy is really good for me. We do have shows at our club here about two to three times a year. We put on great little shows, and people who perform in Cirque du Soleil come to Dave to keep up their talents.

“I THINK ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS ABOUT DOG TRAINING IS THAT WHAT WORKS TODAY WON’T WORK LATER, WHICH IS GREAT BECAUSE AS THE DOG GETS BETTER, WE HAVE TO GET BETTER.” —Christie Branch Photographed By: Josie Gonzales

CHRISTIE BRANCH DOG OBEDIENCE INSTRUCTOR AT PAW COMMONS

Q: You obviously have a special relationship with dogs, can you describe your connection with them? Christie Branch: I love how dogs live in the moment. They’re all about who you are right now. They don’t look into the past, and they don’t try to predict who you’re going to be. I think dogs are the coolest animals on the planet. They co-evolve with us over time. It’s such a special connection people have with dogs.

Q: Do you hope that your work inspires others to take better care of their pets, or even follow a similar path as yours? CB: Absolutely! I say every day, ‘What works for one will not work for all.’ It’s important to find something unique that suits you and your dog. When people come here, they find out how much it’s individually customized and catered for you and your dog. My work encourages people to find that unique relationship.

Q: What inspired you to work at Paw Commons? CB: I received my Animal Science degree from Virginia Tech. San Diego is a city that loves dogs. Pet resorts and doggy day care are a growing thing. This is a great place to be. Everybody here at Paw Commons loves dogs as much as I do. It’s wonderful to be surrounded by people who love the exact same thing. We all benefit each other.

Q: What’s next for you and Paw Commons? CB: “The LAB” is our next big thing. It’s something that I don’t think is offered anywhere else. It’s not a board and train program, and it’s not a group class. It’s taking what you’ve learned in class and continuing that education. The LAB bridges the gap between the two programs and allows for a longer learning curve for you and your pet. I think one of the greatest things about dog training is that what works today won’t work later, which is great because as the dog gets better, we have to get better. We have to constantly be moving forward.

Q: What can a dog expect in a visit to a Paw Commons luxury suite? CB: They can expect a very spacious and very comfy room. They get a TV in the room and they can watch the same great movies they watch in daycare. Staff stop by all throughout the day for walks, potty breaks and often you’ll catch staff just hanging out with the dogs in their room. It’s a small home away from home. 46 LOCALE MAGAZINE

“WE ALSO HAVE OUR ‘GRITTY GIRL’ PROGRAM FOR TWEENS AND TEENS, WHICH TEACHES THEM TO CULTIVATE THEIR GRIT AND FIND THEIR GRACE. IT EQUIPS THEM WITH THE TOOLS TO GET THROUGH GRITTY MOMENTS.” —Kate Nowlan Photographed By: Grey Lockwood

KIMBERLY CACCAVO & KATE NOWLAN FOUNDERS OF GRACEDBYGRIT

Q: How is it that you two met? Kate Nowlan: I was Kim’s sons’ swim coach at The Boys and Girls Club in Solana Beach. Kim was training for a triathlon, and since I coached women’s running groups for fitness and running goals, she hired me to train her. The triathlon was for Chelsea King, to raise money for the Chelsea Light Foundation. We saw a real lack of performance apparel and we talked a lot about it as we ran. I think it was a diversion tactic for Kim to stop me from thinking about the running. Q: Where does the name GRACEDBYGRIT come from? Kimberly Caccavo: Once we decided to launch this business we tested our apparel and it was fantastic. So we thought, ‘How can we come up with a name that tells the story of us and our material?’ We focused on what we had in common, and we were both confronted with a life changing event at some point in our lives. How we make it through these moments is what we are defined by. You 48 LOCALE MAGAZINE

need grit to get through those moments, and grace comes afterwards. And since grit and grace were perfect to describe our apparel GRACEDBYGRIT is what we ended up with. Q: Can you each tell me about a gritty moment of your own? KN: I found out I was pregnant as a junior in college when I was 20 years old. Now I have a beautiful 16 year old. But it wasn’t the plan, and it was a gritty moment that showed me what I was made of. KC: My life has been a series of gritty moments and sprinkled by grace. My mom was a single mom, and I ran the house for her and my brother until she met my step dad. I got my chemical engineering degree and met my husband in college. My husband got leukemia and I lost him by the time I was 30. It was really hard. But now I remarried, and I have two teenagers. Q: How does it make you feel when women share their gritty moments with you? KN: One time when I was on the 101 between

Carson and Solana Beach, I saw a couple of women wearing our clothes. She had stage four cancer, but she said she loved to stand up paddleboard, and the GRACEDBYGRIT clothes she wore felt like armor. One of best gifts we’ve been given in starting this business is the strength behind those stories. Q: Your apparel is almost entirely for women, but how can men support GRACEDBYGRIT? KN: We used Start Engine to open an opportunity for anyone to own some of GRACEDBYGRIT. With investing comes perks. We’ve had a lot of men invest for their daughters and wives, because they want them to enjoy the benefits. We also have our ‘Gritty Girl’ program for tweens and teens, which teaches them to cultivate their grit and find their grace. It equips them with the tools to get through gritty moments. Imperfection is part of life. Our Health and Wellness Coach Sarah Andersen runs the program. A lot of men sign their daughters up.

“WE WANT THE EXPERIENCE TO BE REWARDING. YOU FORGET THAT YOU’RE WORKING OUT BECAUSE IT’S LIKE THERE’S A PARTY GOING ON.” —Maria Disla Photographed By: Grey Lockwood

MARIA DISLA OWNER, PURE INDOOR CYCLING

Q: When did you decide that you were going to open your own indoor cycling gym? Maria Disla: Two years ago I moved to San Diego. I moved in downtown and there were no spin studios. There are some spin classes in other gyms, but no specific spin studio. Q: Your spin classes are a sensory feast. What’s it like to ride during one of your classes? MD: Riding in a class at Pure is like having that expectation that you’re going to workout and push yourself, but giving yourself the time to enjoy it. We want the experience to be rewarding. You forget that you’re working out because it’s like there’s a party going on. If you can forget you’re working out while you’re working out then that’s a win win. Q: How is the cycling theater able to meet the needs of every rider? MD: The group atmosphere while riding in unison makes you feel like you’re doing something bigger. I don’t like working out by myself because I think about other things and I get distracted. But here, I’m with everyone and we let it go, and escape together, and work toward an individual goal together. 50 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Q: You’re located right in the heart of downtown. How do you feel Pure makes a connection with that community? MD: Part of the concept of the studio is based on the fast-paced, want things done yesterday attitude. The studio is very self-serving. You check yourself in, grab your shoes, and your bike is already reserved. A lot of people come in on their lunch break and don’t have time for all these things you usually have to do, so you can be in and out in 45 minutes and on with your day. I love maximum efficiency. Q: How important is it for you that everyone needs to make an effort to stay fit and live a healthy life? MD: A big reason why I started a studio is because in my previous job—I was working really long hours and travelled four days a week. I actually developed a heart condition in my mid-20’s. It was a wake-up call to me. It put things in perspective. I asked, ‘Is this what I want to do? Is this how I want to live; with a job that hurts my body?’ I wanted to give myself the time that everyone needs to find that thing in their life that keeps you fit and healthy. Fitness is not just about outward appearance, it’s about how it makes me feel and how it makes me happy.

“I SKATED, I RODE BMX AND I RACED DIRT BIKES. I ALSO WAKE SKATE AND LONG BOARD, SO PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING. BUT SCOOTERING HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE MOST FUN.” —Clayton Lindley Photographed By: Damien Noble Andrews

CLAYTON LINDLEY EXTREME SCOOTER RIDER

Q: Where do you hail from, and is that where you started a life of freestyle scootering? Clayton Lindley: I grew up in Amarillo, Texas and moved to San Diego when I was 16 years old. That’s when I started scootering. I did a lot of other action sports too. I skated, I rode BMX and I raced dirt bikes. I also wakeskate and long board, so pretty much everything. But scootering has always been the most fun. Q: What got you into scootering, and who brought you to your first skate park? CL: Actually, I did it for the first time after watching a video. Where I lived I was the only scooter rider. My friend Justin and I were the only ones that did action sports. We watched a bunch of YouTube videos and that’s what got us into it. Justin is more of a skater, and he really helped me progress. Q: How big is the freestyle scooter population at skate parks versus skateboarders? CL: Massive. It depends on what skate park really, but scootering 52 LOCALE MAGAZINE

has definitely taken over skateboarding. I know in Australia, surfing is number one and scootering is number two. This shift has really taken place over the last four to five years. Q: How do the tricks you’re able to do, and people watching your abilities inspire others to try freestyle scootering? CL: I get a lot of direct messages on my Instagram from people. If I post something and a kid really likes it, they tag it. Then when they show me videos of them trying it out the next day it’s really cool. The kids watch my tricks and try to do what I do. A lot of kids look up to me because they think it’s a really cool thing. Q: What keeps you driving toward learning new tricks and challenging yourself regularly? CL: I’d say it’s probably just the feeling you get when you land a new trick after trying to land it for a couple hours. You fall a lot, and you get angry. But then when you finally land it, it’s the best feeling in the world.

“I COULDN’T TELL A COMPLICATED STORY THROUGH TWO DIMENSIONAL PAINT.” —Andrea Chung Photographed By: Josie Gonzales

ANDREA CHUNG ARTIST FEATURED AT THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART SAN DIEGO Q: Your exhibit in the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is titled “You broke the ocean in half to be here.” Where does that come from? Andrea Chung: The title comes from a poem by Nayyirah Waheed. The rest of that line is ‘…only to make nothing that wants you.’ It’s the perfect theme for what my work is discussing. The largest part of the exhibition are two site-specific installations featuring lionfish. It’s a really beautiful fish, but the problem is they eat everything and are destroying so much. They don’t have any natural predators, so it’s a really good metaphor for colonialism, which came in and decimated everything in the Caribbean.

Q: You started out as an illustrator and a painter, but I’ve heard you be described as a “mixed media conceptual artist.” Can you please explain that evolution? AC: It was mostly through grad school. I applied to be in the painting program and I was waitlisted. I did, however, get into the interdisciplinary program. I was so poor that I was painting on butcher paper with black and white acrylic paint. A lot of materials came out of not having any money to buy things. I started thinking of migration and how people were items that were imported and exported and it all related to sugar. I painted with sugar and even did my first sculpture with sugar.

Q: How does your art help you connect with their way of life? AC: My work helps me make sense of their history. A lot of things that happened in the past are very hard to learn about. Slavery is a hard situation to wrap your head around and how it affects your family and how it reverberates to now. And how the affects of colonialism are still present today. I’m reading ‘Return to the Postcolony’ by TJ Demos right now, and it helps explain that broad narrative.

Q: How does using materials in your pieces allow you to express yourself better than other art mediums? AC: The materials have a loaded history. Even though sugar is a mundane thing that we take for granted, it really has shaped the way the world looks and comes with its own history. It helps me connect to a certain audience. I don’t think that painting with traditional materials does that for me. I couldn’t tell a complicated story through two-dimensional paint.

“THE BEES ARE THE GIRLS NEXT DOOR. MOST OF THEM ARE FEMALE AND A LOT OF BEEKEEPERS CALL THEM THEIR ‘GIRLS.’” —Hilary Kearney

Photographed By: Josie Gonzales

HILARY KEARNEY OWNER AND BEEKEEPER AT GIRL NEXT DOOR HONEY Q: “Girl Next Door Honey” is actually a very literal name to your business. Who are the girls next door? Hilary Kearney: The bees are the girls next door. Most of them are female and a lot of beekeepers call them their ‘girls.’ I also look like the girl next door. I had a neighbor that got stung and I brought over a jar of honey for him. He thought I made the label just for him. Q: Would you say “Girl Next Door Honey” is a byproduct of your work? HK: Yes. Absolutely. I only harvest if I really think they have an excess of honey. I wanted to create a business where I wasn’t relying on my bees, where it could make it hard on them. If I get under financial pressure I don’t want to be hard on them. I only do a harvest if I can. Q: The buzz is that your Hive Tour is a great activity for a date or family outing. What will visitors experience in the tour? HK: You get to suit up in a bee suit, which is fun, and people immediately start taking selfies. Then we stand around hives and open them up. We pass around frames of bees and I tell Girl Next Door Honey 619.921.8189 www.girlnextdoorhoney.com

interesting facts, such as that they can recognize people’s faces. Then we do a honey tasting at the end. It’s a really fascinating tour and people realize how interesting honey bees are. Q: How do you hope that your work, like your Backyard Hives program, impacts San Diego and beyond? HK: The goal of the Backyard Hives program is to inspire people to care about bees and learn about them. It gives them a connection to the bees. They see them every day, and start paying attention to environmental factors that affect the bees. You connect to the eco system in a way you haven’t before and start thinking about things, like stop using pesticides. Q: What can people plant to help our bees? HK: Sunflowers are good ones, poppies and they love herbs. It’s best to plant native plants, which are also in need, and the bees love them. We also have a very low percentage of tree canopy, which San Diego is working on. So plant a flowering tree, which gives more flowers than you can plant in your garden.

PALM SPRINGS Written By: Quintan Valles

No California road trip would be complete without a pass through the bright and beautiful city of Palm Springs. There’s just something about that diamond of the desert that pulls you in and makes you want to stay for a while to soak up the warm weather, rich culture and the spectacular sunbaked scenery. We have taken the liberty of mapping out the most exciting activities, the best bites and the sweetest places to stay in the city.

RIDE THE AERIAL TRAMWAY

The Indian Canyons hike is a beautiful example of natural landscape in the Greater Palm Springs area. Whether you are a nature enthusiast or simply need a break from the hustle and bustle of city life, it allows you to experience Native American culture and the breathtaking scenery of the desert landscape.

If you want to see Palm Springs, and I mean really see Palm Springs, then take a ride on the sky-bound Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. See the city and the surrounding natural landscape like never before as you and your pals ascend two-and-a-half miles in a rotating tramcar. So hop in and leave your cares, worries and fear of heights behind.

If you’re a dog lover with a penchant for the extreme, the Wolf Mountain Sanctuary is just the place for you. It is a nonprofit organization that seeks to preserve the wolf species and create a more complete understanding of these majestic creatures. Get your fill of furry friends that are kind of like your dog at home, if your dog was big, gray and could probably eat you.

FACTS ABOUT THE CITY The Santa Monica Pier was originally created for the disposing of sewage. Santa Monica is named Silicon Beach for the various tech companies located there. The original ferris wheel was auctioned off to a bidder in Oklahoma City.

California is a state of endless beauty, from scorching deserts and towering ancient trees to the Golden Gate Bridge and the Hollywood Sign; there is no limit to the beauty the state has to offer and there is no better place to road trip than on the end of Route 66 in Santa Monica. This city is where authentic tacos and Ethiopian food can be consumed on the same day, but still the best part may be the fact that you don’t have to leave California to embark on an incredible road trip! “As a person that loves music, you can’t help but to be fans of the people around you.” —Angie Keilhauer

Angie Keilhauer’s Musical Journey from “The Voice” to Her Second Album WRITTEN BY: AMANDA LENOX PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NICK ISABELLA

Big breaks aren’t easy for a musician. No one understands this more than country artist Angie Keilhauer. Keilhauer was a full-time engineering student working in a Mustang-only salvage yard, when she was offered a job as a full-time musician on Carnival Cruise Lines. Keilhauer was able to pay for her first album with the money she made on the cruise, and started touring the East Coast—when she was invited to audition for “The Voice.”

B

“You don’t see the number of times that you have to try before that break happens. A lot of times people think failure is a scary thing, but a lot of times, it just makes it better when you are actually able to make it,” Keilhauer said. Although Keilhauer was only on the show for three rounds on Blake Shelton’s team, she enjoyed the creative and supportive environment. Despite the competition on the show, it was easier to be competing with people who became friends. “As a person that loves music, you can’t help but to be fans of the people around you,” Keilhauer said. Also, as an added bonus they have great advisors to help them on their journey. Keilhauer remembers one of the biggest compliments she received from Gwen Stefani:

“One of my favorite things that you have, is that I believe you. Never lose that.” After winning a singersongwriter competition at the Del Mar County Fair, Josh Williford from Acoustic Spot Talent reached out to Keilhauer, and was interested in booking her to play more shows in the San Diego area. Now, Keilhauer has played throughout the country, with several gigs being in San Diego. However, she always makes sure that those shows have a “laid back, cool” vibe. Fans can find Keilhauer playing at some of her favorite venues in San Diego, including Le Papagayo, Union Kitchen & Tap and Alfonso’s of La Jolla. Keilhauer is currently working on her next album and is loving the songwriting process. She finds her best songs are being written while moving, on flights and in the car. “They have to be perfect. There’s something so magical and addicting and beautiful about saying something exactly the way you want to say it,” said Keilhauer. She finds inspiration from artists like Janis Joplin, Melissa Etheridge and Johnny Cash. She’s also enjoyed the collaborative process of cowriting, and some of the songs that have come from that process. Keilhauer hopes to release her next album winter of this year.

BORN IN AUS TR ALIA , MACHADO BECAME AN OFFICIAL SAN DIEGAN WHEN HE WAS FOUR YE ARS OLD. GROWING UP IN AMERICA’S FINEST CIT Y DURING THE L ATE ‘70S, MACHADO LIVED AN IDYLLIC CHILDHOOD. HE LIT UP AS HE REMINISCED ON THE MEMORY, “SAN DIEGO IS INCREDIBLE, AND TO GROW UP IN NORTH COUNT Y WAS PRE T T Y SPECIAL...I’ VE HAD THE OPPORTUNIT Y TO TR AVEL THE WORLD AND I ALWAYS COME BACK HERE AND I’M IMPRESSED. IT’S NOT LIKE A PL ACE THAT I WANT TO GE T OUT OF; I ALWAYS COME HOME AND I’M STOKED TO BE HERE,” MACHADO SAID AS HE SAT UP A LIT TLE STR AIGHTER.

With a father who loved surfing, Machado recalls never feeling pressured to pick up a board, “We were always just down on the beach so it was kind of a natural fit. I watched my dad surf and that’s the same approach I took with my kids.” His dad would come back from his surf sessions refreshed and pumped, which intrigued Machado to give the sport a try. He began, as most surfers do, by letting the waves push him, eventually advancing to body boarding to get a feel for the motion of the waves. Until one day, while he was lying on his board, a wave came. He paddled and paddled as hard as he could when, in one swift movement, he hopped up on his board, caught his balance and rode his first wave. “When I stood up on a wave it just changed my whole perspective about everything, really. I was blown away like, this is what I want to do. It just changed everything for me,” said Machado. Famously known for his long, shaggy hair and goofy foot stance, Machado started entering contest after contest and collecting trophy after trophy, eventually earning the number two spot in the world in 1995, eight World Tour victories in 2000 and a Pipeline Masters win under his belt that same year. After a successful career in competitive surfing, Machado was offered a unique opportunity—the opportunity of a lifetime. Hurley was going to pay Machado to travel the world as a free surfer. No competitions, no more heats, just Machado, his board and the ocean.

“When I first started surfing, being a free surfer wasn’t really an option—it was kind of unheard of back then and as I went through my competitive career, the whole free surfing side became viable,” Machado explained. “I kind of transitioned into it really easy. I think I’m competitive for sure, but I don’t know if I really thrive off competition; I was very much more into just the whole act of going surfing.” With a family in San Diego, and a true love for where he lived, Machado couldn’t stay away from home for too long. “I traveled so much around the world. I’ve been on the road a whole lot and every time I come back home I still felt really connected to this place; I always wanted to have my roots here,” said Machado. When his daughter was born in 2001, Machado started visiting local elementary schools and found something that didn’t sit right with him—old drinking fountains that the children referred to as “gross” and refused to drink from. The unappealing and most likely unhealthy water led parents to send their kids off to school with plastic, single-use water bottles. So, he took to the high schools and saw students lined up at vending machines to purchase water. “Here are our children, going to school to learn and to get an education and they have to buy water? It just left a bad taste in my mouth,” Machado recalled. This ignited a fire inside of the easygoing surfer to take action, and in 2004 the Rob Machado Foundation was born. The foundation began putting water filling stations in the majority of schools in the North County area; allowing students to bring their own bottles to eliminate the amount of waste created by them, while simultaneously giving kids access to free, clean water. He’s also started programs in the elementary schools including recycling and garden programs where the students are able to grow produce used in their school lunches. “We want kids to realize where their food comes from and that they can grow their own food and recycle. So it’s just all positive things that you can carry on through your life that we’re having to relearn,” said Machado.

Going to the beach at Cardiff and seeing trash abandoned by the weekend tourists catapulted the second aspect in the Rob Machado Foundation—trashcans that effectively keep litter off the beaches and out of the ocean. “After a long weekend, especially in the summer, we’d get down [to the beach] and the trashcans would have trash falling out the sides. The seagulls find food in there and they’re digging and pulling stuff out, the wind’s blowing and the next thing you know, the parking lot is covered in trash,” Machado said somberly. That’s when Machado came up with the idea to put a protective roof, which he refers to as an “R2D2” lid, on top of the trash can, effectively keeping the trash in and stopping it from spreading to the ocean. The foundation also increased the number of trashcans so beachgoers have easy access to one nearby. Beach town locals are no strangers to a beach filled with trash after a large event, and Machado was no exception. Fed up, he created The Green Team, a volunteer group made up of people from all over, including volunteers from Chicago and even Mexico, who come out to perform massive beach cleanups for the SWITCHFOOT Bro-Am, where they broke the record and diverted 83 percent of waste from the landfill in 2015. With a focus on keeping concert goers hydrated, the foundation also created a Water Oasis in collaboration with Hurley. Since then, The Green Team has also held local beach cleanups as well. Coming from a place of influence in the community where he resides as a hometown hero, Machado has created positive change for the city he’s called home his whole life. Spreading awareness of recycling and inspiring others to take action is what Machado hopes his foundation will accomplish. “Doing the right thing is really what it comes down to,” said Machado. And by instilling lifelong lessons in children about taking care of our planet, giving local schools access to clean water and keeping trash from harming marine life, ‘doing the right thing’ is an understatement.

Ten thousand hours is a very long time. But according to professional Kendama player TJ Kolesnik, that’s what it takes to truly master something. He acquired this philosophy from one of his favorite books, “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell. In it, the author studied the best in the world from a variety of disciplines and found it took that many hours of practice to become world-class. After eight solid years, TJ has far surpassed that number.

KENDAMA IS A JAPANESE SKILL TOY THAT INVOLVES A WOODEN TAMA (A BALL CONNECTED WITH A STRING) AND A KEN (A STICK WITH THREE CUPS AND A SPIKE). ALTHOUGH IT’S AN ANCIENT GAME, IT’S CURRENT FORM BORROWS HEAVILY FROM B-BOY CULTURE AND FREESTYLE SPORTS. THE BEST PLAYERS, (LIKE TJ) HAVE UNIQUE STYLES THAT FEEL LIKE WELLCHOREOGRAPHED STREET PERFORMANCES.

TJ grew up in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. His first love was the snow, and he became a competitive skier traveling around the US. During that time, he cultivated his love for the ability to improvise, a central talent in the world of Kendama. Introduced to the game by a friend, TJ didn’t immediately take to it. It was only months later when he ran into it a second time that he finally became hooked. “The cool thing about Kendama is that it’s such a creative toy. You can create your own style,” says TJ. So what exactly does it mean to be a professional Kendama player? It means having a deep love for a deceptively challenging game. It means having a profound appreciation for a small, but uniquely passionate culture. In less-abstract terms, it means that like any athlete it requires an enormous amount of hours. TJ must put in the work, often a frustrating and slow process, in order to master the movement and flow needed to outperform his competitors. With such a high-level of skill in the circuit, this is no small task. For TJ, though, it’s about much more than that. He strives to “be a good role model, advocate and ambassador for the sport.” During his 2016 “Make Waves” world tour, he traveled throughout Japan, Singapore, Sweden, Canada and the United States. It was the realization of a lifelong dream that started when he learned the definition of the phrase: “to make a significant impact.” More than a typical promotional tour, TJ wanted to personally touch the players who had been supporting him and his 84 LOCALE MAGAZINE

career. While he loved every place he visited, he left his heart in Japan due to a love for the unique culture and food. Kendama is huge in the country, and although he was far from home, the community made him feel as if he had never left. Kolesnik also has other passions including modeling, which he hopes to continue pursuing as his career as a public figure grows. To-date, he’s worked on several high-profile campaigns including Volkswagen and various clothing brands. “I’ve always liked to be in front of the camera,” he said, unapologetically. What’s unique is that this simple game is surging in popularity now, while young people are losing their attention spans faster each day. Kendama is forced to compete with the digital noise of video games and reality television that pervade our society. But that makes this return to a simpler form of entertainment both welcome and unexpected. Maybe it’s a sign that at our core, we all desire those quieter moments. The ones where we can work towards a goal for no one but ourselves. So what does the future hold for TJ? “I feel like I have a lot of opportunity on my plate right now. I’m just waiting to see where life takes me,” he said. It seems to be a vague answer, but the way the 24-year-old says it, he sounds excited, but focused—the same way one of Gladwell’s Outliers might say it. No matter what comes his way, we’re certain he’ll put in the time it takes to master it.

SO WHAT EXACTLY DOES IT MEAN TO BE A PROFESSIONAL KENDAMA PLAYER? IT MEANS HAVING A DEEP LOVE FOR A DECEPTIVELY CHALLENGING GAME.

“I FEEL LIKE I HAVE A LOT OF OPPORTUNITY ON MY PLATE RIGHT NOW. I’M JUST WAITING TO SEE WHERE LIFE TAKES ME.” — TJ KO L E S N I K

GLOBAL PHENOMENON Almost every culture has a version of Kendama, including the SpanishPortuguese “Boliche” or “Balero” and the English “Bilbo Catcher.” TEACH ‘EM YOUNG At various times throughout history, Kendama has been taught in Japanese schools to teach children hand-eye coordination and patience.

“It’s a bully system—a brand new kid who just wants to skate and enjoy this freedom that I feel every day and they show up to a skate park with a new board and new helmet and they’re immediately shut down by other kids,” said Ryan. He wanted the skate park to be a place that everyone would feel accepted and safe and he knew he had to help his fans, especially the ones that felt isolated. “The support and the love was just crazy so I wanted to be able to give that back because I was in a position to start doing that,” said Ryan. He started participating in events with charities like Children’s Cancer Research Fund and The Make-A-Wish Foundation, and eventually created The Sheckler Foundation with his mother and manager Gretchen Sheckler-Hachee, who is both the Director and CEO of the foundation. The inspiration for The Sheckler Foundation started after a young girl named Casey, diagnosed with leukemia, requested to meet Sheckler through The Make-A-Wish Foundation. His hit TV show “Life of Ryan” had already aired on MTV and the world was getting to know him on a more personal level, especially his relationship with his brothers. “She looked at my strength and was impressed and I looked at her strength and the scar, the beautiful scar that went down her neck and I couldn’t imagine the fight she had been through,” said Ryan. It was then that he knew he wanted to do more for others. “At that point in my life

my worries were hitting a rim on a curb, it was selfish. She really opened my eyes, and that’s when it really started.”

With a mission to help causes that benefit children and injured athletes in the action sports industry, The Sheckler Foundation works to raise money for their “Be the Change” program, a web-based initiative that allows the foundation’s supporters to participate in where the charity donates money raised. About six to 12 times per year a $10,000 grant is given to a “Be The Change” recipient, which is voted on through the website. “It’s so incredible to see the can-do attitudes that come from these children that have been through so much,” said Gretchen, “We are so grateful to experience these moments with them.” The money for the grants is raised through the foundation’s two major events each year: The Oakley Golf Tournament and Skate For A Cause. This month is the Oakley Golf Tournament at the Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point. The gala will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9 honoring Sheckler’s longtime agent and The Sheckler Foundation board member, Steve Astephen. Sunday, Sept.10 will be the golf tournament at the Monarch Golf Links. This event always draws a large crowd of celebrities and action-sport athletes who will enjoy a vintage nautical themed golf tournament with a whole day filled with activities on Monarch’s unique golf course with ocean views at every hole. Golfers will also be able to enjoy cocktail hour during sunset, a 200-foot helicopter ball drop, an awards ceremony and more.

What sounds like the line up for a morning of Saturday cartoons is actually only a small portion of the roster of the North County Derby Alliance—a roller derby club based out of Oceanside. The organization has made it their mission to have a positive impact on their community while rolling through their season and picking up wins. The ladies, who range in age from early 20s to over 50, work together to promote several charitable organizations, both locally and nationally. 96 LOCALE MAGAZINE

WHAT’S IN A NAME? Roller Derby players typically choose names that are reflective of their personalities or that tell a quirky story. For example, Sweet Cyanide is sweet... but deadly. GET IN DERBY SHAPE In order to keep up their fitness for their games, the ladies do a variety of different workouts. Some enjoy running or cycling, others do CrossFit, but all the women focus on healthy eating and staying active. NEXT BOUT October’s match up will be against the Dirty City Roller Rats. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the bout starts at 5 p.m.

Primarily, the team works with the Women’s Resource Center in Oceanside. Whenever the facility hosts events, the players volunteer in a variety of capacities. They have done things like provided childcare, ran and monitored activities and interacted with guests. June’s bout (game) included a canned food drive for the center. “Last year, [the resource center] did a Christmas event for the women and children at the facility. They had the team provide entertainment for the children while the parents were able to go out and shop for the kids. That was just one of the things we did there,” Marcella Maynard, head of Promotions, Sponsorship and Public Relations for NCDA said. “They are in a facility where they are trying to escape violence, so they have a really hard time trusting anyone with their kids. We come in so that they have someone they know and trust.” Also known as “Shark Bait,” Maynard has been involved with the team since its inception in 2015. She’s participated in many of the charitable projects the women have worked on and helped support a number of different causes. “We have always looked for charities that are out there to help children. We’ve done things like the Undie Run, where we were one of the highest contributors for the event. We also help out our derby sisters and brothers in the community,” Maynard said. A former player faced a daunting breast cancer diagnosis and the team rallied

around her. Even though she no longer skated with the women, her derby family adopted her cause and began putting on events like car washes and bake sales to raise money. “It’s a big ol’ family to us… it’s not just derby. A few years ago, there was an accident where a plane crashed into a vehicle on I-15. Our coach was in the car, several players were in the car. One of our players passed away and others suffered serious injuries. We did some big fundraisers to help them and their families out,” Maynard said. In addition to supporting worthy causes, the ladies also want to provide strong, positive role models for younger children in the community. They want to be seen as strong, confident athletes and women—not just sexy girls on roller skates. Despite gaining momentum and popularity over the last decade, roller derby is surrounded by misconceptions. The common belief is that the women are violent, scantily clad and looking for a fight. Many people are unaware of the athletic ability, coordination and endurance it takes to be a successful derby player. “Roller derby is perceived as a rough, mean sport. Our goal is to put it out there that we are athletes. It’s not always a fight, or bootie shorts, or anything like that. Our league has established that we are classy. We want to be perceived as strong, female athletes. You’re not just there to body slam someone. It’s a real sport—we

run on our skates, we move in every direction. We can stop at the drop of a hat. It’s similar to soccer or football— we just don’t have a ball. We’re not just rolling around in circles,” Maynard said. Derby also creates a community for the women. By joining the team, they instantly become part of a family. The team started as a collection of women who had a vision—to have a non profit league that would help them empower women and recognize female athletes. Their first meetings, in 2015, helped them build a board of directors, and from there, they started skating. They practiced at skate parks, got their name out there and eventually found a home base at the Army Navy Academy in Carlsbad. “Once we had that ‘home’, we started getting booked for games and scrimmages. We technically didn’t have a full bout roster until the 2016 season. We played with South Coast Roller Derby and Winetown Rollers, just to get our name out there. We’ve been blooming. People contact us wanting to play us,” Maynard said. From a handful of women, lead by founders Meg G’ Byte and Shay Z, the team has filled out their roster, boasting 24 players. They have also started building their junior team, which is for co-ed skaters, aged five to 17. Maynard said that interested players can simply show up to their practices or reach out to the organization through Facebook.

ISLANDS ARE EXCITING, encapsulated worlds that inspire some of the

greatest stories ever told—”Gulliver’s Travels,” “Swiss Family Robinson” and “The Odyssey,” to name a few. Growing up an avid reader, my imagination often wandered to outlandish, far away locales in the middle of the sea. I even sketched many of my own treasure maps, complete with erupting volcanoes and lurking sea serpents. Years later, I finally got the chance to realize my childhood fantasies of nautical exploration, just off the Southern California coast in Channel Islands National Park.

My girlfriend and willing adventure partner, Mallory, and I arrived at Ventura Harbor an hour early for our 11 a.m. departure. The morning sun was gentle and a soft breeze carried with it a hint of salt, the perfect recipe for an excursion on the high seas. We joined a queue of bird watchers and sugar-rushed kids outside of Island Packers Cruises, all of us anxious to board the double-decker catamaran docked below. For almost 50 years Island Packers has been the facilitator of education, recreation and scientific research on all five of the Channel Islands. We were about to set sail for the largest, Santa Cruz, where we would be camping for one night in Scorpion Canyon Campground. Once everyone shuffled on and the all clear was given, the twin engines rumbled to life and we scooted our way out of the port. A sea lion lounging on a buoy lifted a fin as he rolled over, undoubtedly wishing us bon voyage. The shoreline grew fainter and the motor really opened up, sending strong gusts ruffling through my hair. White splashes erupted from the ocean surface as dolphins played in our wake, much to the awe of every passenger. The captain’s voice scratched over the intercom, informing us that for every visible dolphin, there were likely four more concealed beneath in this

enormous pod. Nutrient rich waters that surround the Channel Islands create a sanctuary for biodiversity and the largest concentration of marine mammals on Earth. In addition to several different dolphin and porpoise species, 27 different whales have been seen there, offering a year-round spectacle for nature lovers. An hour passed by and the boat anchored in the azure waters of Scorpion Harbor, where you can rent kayaks and paddle around rocky spires. After retrieving our gear, we set out on the quarter mile hike to the campground, taking in the towering sea cliffs and ranch house relics of a bygone era. We were carrying provisions for the next 24 hours, along with sleeping bags and a tent, so the straps of our backpacks weighed especially heavy on our shoulders as the temperature rose. While both day trips and camping are an option on all of the islands, only Santa Cruz is equipped with running water; be extremely prepared if you plan to stay overnight and if you pack it in, pack it out. We stopped to grab a map and check out the airconditioned visitor center, where exhibits tell the story of Santa Cruz’s rich, layered history. For over 9,000 years before European contact, the Chumash people occupied the island and traversed the channel in plank canoes to trade valuable

What’s in a Name?

• Santa Cruz Island’s name came from a Chumash Indian who found a staff and returned it to the priest who had left it. To show their gratitude, the Spaniards called the island “La Isla de Santa Cruz,” which translates to the Island of the Sacred Cross.

shells and pelts with other tribes on the mainland. During the Civil War, an estimated 24,000 sheep roamed the surrounding hills and valleys as ranchers strained to meet the skyrocketing demand for wool. Smugglers even exploited the desolate coastline to stockpile their loot, adding intrigue and lore to the region as only pirates can. Papery bark crinkled softly underfoot as we reached our campsite in a welcoming grove of eucalyptus trees. Not long after setting up, we received our first visitor, a sniffing island fox with a creased left ear. Santa Cruz is home to a resurgent population of this native canid, found nowhere else in the world. After being nearly wiped out, they now spend the day scavenging for scraps of careless campers, so we locked our food up before heading out on a hike. From the campsite, there are several trails that branch out to various extents of the island, like Montañon Ridge and Potato Harbor, but those were a huge time commitment, so we opted for the short loop to Cavern Point, a picturesque climb high above the shore. It was the ideal spot to watch the sun set along the length of the coastline, as vibrant orange shifted to a deep fuchsia, and pinpricks of light began to appear in the heavens. The sky darkened and we made our way back to the beach to settle in for an

hour or two of stargazing. There, 20 miles from the nearest city lights, the cosmos could be appreciated in its full splendor. The Milky Way rose out of the southern sky like the arm of a glimmering colossus, its band a complete arc across the inky darkness. Some easily recognizable constellations peered down at us as well: Orion’s Belt, the Big Dipper and Sagittarius. The next morning, Mallory and I set out on a trek across the island to Smugglers Cove, determined to make the most of our remaining time. Though strenuous, the views along the way were unmatched; the rich earthen hues of the mountains clashed with vivid aqua blues and green swaths of vegetation. A dip in the waves was a refreshing reward, but the cobblestone beach made sunbathing an uncomfortable endeavor. In the waning minutes of our island excursion, we lounged by the rocks at Scorpion Anchorage, soaking our tired feet while awaiting the ferry’s return. There’s something humbling about sitting on the shore, waiting to see a boat materialize on the horizon. It strengthened my appreciation for the remaining wild places on the planet. Whether you choose to visit for a day or stay for a week, Santa Cruz Island is an extraordinary opportunity to create your own story.

Wear layers and bring binoculars to help spot marine wildlife in the distance. • Plastic grocery bags are prohibited on lands within Channel Islands National Park, along with pets and campfires, to protect the health of endangered species. • Follow the “Leave No Trace” guidelines and give all wildlife plenty of space when viewing them.

Chef Hanis Cavin, a San Diego native, has always had a knack for creating spectacular dishes that everyone enjoys. With three locations spread out in the county, patrons have the opportunity to revel in the artistry of pork goodness. Chef Hanis’ desire to create the perfect pork dishes led him to find the most flawless specimens and flavors.

Q: WHAT WAS THE FIRST MOMENT THAT MADE YOU SAY, “I REALLY WANT TO BECOME A CHEF”? Hanis Cavin: I took home economics in high school and part of it was cooking. My teacher came to me one day and [said] that I have talent and should really pursue. Being the know-it-all high schooler that I was, I said, ‘No’ and became a construction worker. It was not for me, and it dawned on me that I wanted to be a chef so I went to the New England Culinary Institute and my life changed forever. It’s my passion, plus I love food. I was destined to be a chef.

Scouts Honor Chef Hanis taught a local Boy Scout troop how to use a La Caja China. For the Love of Tradition Chef Hanis Cavin loves Mexico because he was able to find traditional pork recipes that had been used for generations. He learned from the people there and appreciated the culinary art they had practiced throughout history.

Q: What sets your establishment apart from other restaurants? HC: We are a fast casual dining experience. When we first started, there were little to no counterstyle restaurants. Plus, I think the anticipation builds when the customer is in line. While you’re waiting, you get to smell all of the food being made in the kitchen, and the excitement just builds up while you are waiting. We also provide a comfortable environment that is like being at home, but nicer. And we’re affordable. We have the same high quality food but for eight to 10 dollars.

Shack, North Park was not the hip and popular neighborhood that it is today. We were certainly taking a risk opening a new type of fast-casual restaurant in a neighborhood that had heavy police activity.

Q: Your love of pork is evident, but how did it all begin? HC: It all started with a ham and cheese sandwich. For most people, bacon is their introduction into the world of pork. But for me, I had this amazing ham and cheese sandwich and it changed my life forever.

Q: Carnitas’ Snack Shack has become a sensation all over San Diego. What do you think makes it a fan-favorite? HC: We have high quality food that people definitely enjoy. We have a family-friendly atmosphere and affordable prices so all people can enjoy quality food at a reasonable price.

Q: How did you come up with your menu? What was your inspiration behind it? HC: I came up with it after years of dreaming about and cooking with pork. My inspiration was that I finally had my own place where I could do whatever I wanted and was able to think outside of the box.

Q: What are some upcoming projects that you are working on? HC: Well, we just recently opened two locations within Petco Park so getting that up and running smoothly has definitely kept me busy!

Q: What were some of the challenges you had to overcome when you first opened Carnitas’ Snack Shack? HC: Well when we opened the Snack

Q: All the dishes at Carnitas’ Snack Shack are delicious, but what is one dish that everyone must try when they come to your restaurant? HC: The Triple Threat! It’s a sandwich filled with pork loin schnitzel, succulent pulled pork, bacon, pepperoncini relish and some housemade shack aioli.

Q: What restaurant do you frequent outside of your own? HC: My go-to is Colima's Mexican Food, but I enjoy going out and trying new places. Most recently I was very impressed with my experience at KINDRED.

BAO WOW! u ‘Bao’ is a traditional Chinese steamed bun. The San Diego Bao is a staple in beach street foods with a fluffy steamed bun filled with bold flavors.

Q&A With Executive Chef Michael Ground Q: If you had to choose, what is one bao dish that everyone must try when they come to Bao Beach? Michael Ground: The Char Siu Bao. It’s a marinated pork shoulder with pickled carrots and a freshly steamed bao bun. The Char Siu definitely creates an explosion of flavors in your mouth. But if you ask anyone on our team, every person has their own personal favorite. It’s just best to try them all.

Bao Beach takes the traditional bao dish and transforms it into a culinary masterpiece.

In sunny San Diego, every day is a good day to go to the beach—it’s usually sunny and 70 degrees, so it’s never a bad idea to head on over to Mission Boulevard. Walking down the bustling street, locals will be greeted by the enchanting aromas coming from Bao Beach. All who find themselves at this hidden gem can kick back, relax and enjoy some much needed sustenance.

Bao Beach is definitely a community hot spot! This innovative beach-front restaurant creates some of the most mouthwatering food anyone will ever taste. The combination of a friendly staff and laid back atmosphere makes for a perfect beach hangout. After a long day at work, you can always come back to this stress-free and joyous place in order to recharge for the week. Plus the prices are very reasonable, so you don’t have to feel like you are breaking the bank in order to treat your taste buds.

B

There are so many tasty options that you must try. From the Spicy Tuna Poke Bowl to the Bulgogi Street Fries, you can always expect a decadent meal at Bao Beach. But of course, while here, one must try the bao. Bao Beach uses fresh and flavorful ingredients in all of their creations. Who wouldn’t love that? In addition, every bao dish features a perfectly steamed bao bun; this fluffy delight is a total treat that you will be sure to enjoy. Each and every bao dish is crafted with a distinctive flavor profile. The Carnitas Bao is filled with tender Mexican-style braised pork and topped off with house-pickled cucumber, shallots, tangy barbecue sauce, and some cilantro, plus a mixture of rock sugar and peanuts are sprinkled on top. The Bulgogi Bao pays homage to the unique flavors of Korea. First, they start with a nice sized helping of Bulgogi also know as Korean

marinated beef. Next, they top it with house-made kimchi, green onion and a special Sriracha ketchup. Finally, they sprinkle some sesame seeds on top to finish this savory treat off. One bao that everyone must try is the Char Siu Bao. This wonder consists of tender pork topped off with crisp cucumbers and pickled carrots. Then some pickled daikon, crisp jalapeño and barbecue sauce are added to the mix before finishing off with refreshing cilantro. Talk about an explosion of flavor in your mouth! Then you have to try the Karaage Chicken Bao. It’s a new take on bao using a Japanese-style fried chicken with pickled cabbage and cilantro. Lastly, the team at Bao Beach tops it off with a special spicy mayonnaise that incorporates the wellknown Japanese Kewpie mayo. The Market Vegetable Bao features sautéed seasonal vegetables on top of one of their fluffy bao buns. Did we mention the Shrimp Bao? This includes crispy fried shrimp, pickled cabbage, spicy mayo and fresh cilantro. Bao Beach takes the traditional bao dish and transforms it into a culinary masterpiece. They combine original ingredients with mouthwatering flavors only to produce an explosion of scrumptious goodness in your mouth. Each and every bao dish masterfully created at Bao Beach is a must have for anyone and everyone who comes to San Diego. Executive Chef, Michael Ground, explains the delicious wonder known as the bao.

Q: Bao has become an Instagram sensation! Why do you think it is so popular? MG: For one, the food is very colorful and easy to photograph. We use fresh ingredients in our bao, which creates an appealing dish for the eye. Q: How did the concept of the bao dish come to fruition? MG: With any new restaurant, we wanted to make sure the neighborhood was given something they didn't have. We had a lot of fun creating this concept. Our focus was to create flavors that match the regions and ingredients that they came from. Q: Talk about the ingredients that go into a bao dish. What makes them unique? MG: Each dish has a different flavor profile depending on the region they came from; we also use local fresh produce and quality meats in all of our food, which gives the bao dish its bold flavor. San Diego has a heavy Mexican influence. Baos are unique because it is our take on a San Diego favorite, the taco, and infused with Asian flavors. Together, you get a unique treat perfect for a day at the beach. Q: What would you say is the most challenging ingredient to work with? MG: Definitely the steamed buns. They are the star of the show, and hold everything together—literally. If you overcook them or under cook them, it can really ruin your day. LOCALE MAGAZINE 115

LOCALE MAGAZINE 119

Q: HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED WITH VILLAGER GOODS?

Josh Landan: We wanted to create a company where my friends and I could consume the product. We really wanted to make a product that was healthy, affordable and something we could use. Q: How did the sports world inspire you to create Villager Coconut Water? JL: Our product is great for athletes. For those who are active, staying hydrated is very important. It’s healthy, hydrating and has a lot of potassium, which prevents muscle cramps. Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced while creating Villager Coconut Water? JL: The biggest challenge is getting the product from the Philippines. We really wanted to make sure we found a quality product, but also keep the cost low at $2.49 so anyone could buy our product. But I would have to say that dealing with a supply chain on the other side of the world is the biggest challenge. Q: Why did you decide to go to the Philippines to acquire your coconut water? JL: The Philippines was the best choice for us to produce a high quality, organic, and not from concentrate product. Those combinations are not offered a lot of places in the world. Q: How did your experience with the Saint Archer Brewing Company help you when you started Villager Goods? JL: Saint Archer taught me everything. Having never gone to college, Saint Archer was my bachelor’s degree and my MBA all rolled into one from Harvard. All of those lessons and experiences have led me to Villager Goods. Q: When was the moment that you realized that you wanted to switch from the brewing industry to the coconut water world? JL: My time at Saint Archer had run its course and I wanted to create a healthy product for adults and kids. My wife, Jannine, and I have three kids under the age of 10 so living a more health conscious lifestyle has become a priority of ours. So, that being said creating a product that

120 LOCALE MAGAZINE

we were already buying on a regular basis was a no-brainer. Q: How does it feel to have finally created your product? JL: Awesome! It never gets old to see someone I don’t know enjoying our product. When I walk through the stores and see our product on the shelf or when I see people posting pictures of it on social media, it’s just amazing and it’s an accomplishment in its own right. I think the most rewarding aspect of it is that we were also able to create something healthy but tasty for both adults and kids. We wanted to give kids and adults healthier alternatives to energy drinks and sodas so, it has been great to see that come to life. Q: What sets Villager Coconut Water apart? JL: Our coconut water is organic and not from concentrate. Those two things are a rare combination on the coconut water shelves. Also, our original flavor is among the leaders for the least amount of sugar. The other thing is, it’s a great story of world-class athletes leaving big endorsement deals to build something that they believe in. Q: Coconut water has become so popular over the past few years. Why do you think this drink trend has taken off? JL: I think it’s because people want a healthier alternative. They also like the taste of it, especially since there are multiple flavors. We have a chocolate coconut water that kids love, and it tastes good. So, I think that’s why coconut water is becoming attractive to everyone of all ages. Q: Coconut water is a great drink on its own, but it can also be mixed in a variety of ways. What’s your favorite way to mix up Villager Coconut Water? JL: Coconut water is tough to beat in

a really good smoothie. I know a lot of people will mix it with vodka, but I think that our coconut water mixes well in a smoothie. It really gives the smoothie the perfect thickness and it pairs well with any type of fruit you would use. Q: Can we expect any new products to come in the near future? JL: Yes. We will be coming out with more organic beverages and foods in the coming months. Q: Who is your ideal audience that you are trying to reach with your product? JL: Young parents and kids are our ideal audience as that is what we are. Q: Did action sport filming help with meeting some of your fellow Villagers? Who are some of the professional athletes that helped you create your brand? JL: Yes. The only reason why I met and ultimately developed close friendships with all of these athletes was because I was making films with them for so many years—Paul Rodriguez, Mikey Taylor, Eric Koston, Andrew Reynolds, Alana Blanchard, Taj Burrow, Pat Moore, Jack Freestone, and so many others.

THE FATHER OF SURFING

Don’t Touch

Mai Drink Escape to Hawaii With Duke’s Mai Tai WRITTEN BY: IAN HAYS PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NATHAN WHELAN Southern California is known for its pristine beaches and beautiful weather. But there is something about Hawaii that calls out to mainlanders. The water just seems a little bluer; the warmth in the air is just a little friendlier. Hawaii is synonymous with vacation. Unfortunately, we can’t just take a vacation whenever we want to the island paradise. But, Duke’s is the next best thing to a Hawaiian vacation. Each Duke’s location is perfectly placed a stone’s throw from the water. As you dine, take in the salty breeze and observe the surfers and frequent suntanners. Bask in décor designed with an upscale and chic beach bungalow in mind. But what completes the Hawaiian vacation experience is their famous Mai Tai. The cocktail is served in a festive

glass fashioned in a Polynesian tribal mask style. It also comes complete with a mini toothpick umbrella and pineapple slice.

Ò Duke’s is named after Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, world famous surfer and swimmer. He won multiple Olympic medals in swimming, setting records along the way. He is also credited with bringing surfing to the masses and popularizing it everywhere ocean meets sand.

HAWAIIAN HIATUS

SPIRIT OF ALOHA

Ò Duke’s and the T S Restaurants family run “Legacy of Aloha,” their charitable organization. It is “grounded in the spirit of giving without an expectation of receiving anything in return” with a focus on community outreach. They work to curb hunger, assist the elderly, save the environment and positively promote Hawaiian culture within each restaurant’s local community.

But looks will only get you so far. It is the taste that really transports you to your favorite island resort. Duke’s Mai Tai is a trade secret. But, it does boast fresh Hawaiian juices and two kinds of rum. THE TRIO BEHIND...

...San Diego’s newest hot spot, Pete Cich, Doug Sondomowicz and Rob McShea, identified a need within the Carlsbad community for a gathering space where friends, families and furry pals could come together and enjoy great food and good company. The design of Park 101 allows for guests to enjoy comfortable outdoor space, with firepits and seating, as well as indoor booth and bar accommodations. With everything from tasty drinks to delicious dishes, Park 101 is sure to be your new favorite spot to hang out.

Up in Smoke u The structure

for Park 101 was actually built around the smoker for Park Smoked Meats. The device was so large that it had to be installed before the building was completed. It is capable of churning out about 2,000 pounds of smoked meat per day.

Park 101 is home to four different food and drink concepts, but they are all housed under one roof, or lack thereof. Each unique venue has specialty items and focuses on different kinds of food or drink. The space has been designed so that guests can grab what they want and go anywhere. Guests can visit any of the options and enjoy as they see fit.

connections in all of the available outlets for guests to use. The space was intentionally designed so that visitors could charge their devices while they relaxed, or so that diners could use Park 101 as an office away from work. 126 LOCALE MAGAZINE

This feature of Park 101 presents a cafeteria-style service line with carving stations, six different smoked proteins, as well as salad and side stations. According to Executive Chef and Pit Master, Ryan Tuskan, the ultimate tray would include brisket, tri-tip, sausage and turkey with a side of their Broccolini Pomegranate dish, some mac and cheese and extra pickles, always. “I’ve learned to really celebrate California-forward cuisine. We use what we have available to us to produce really awesome dishes,” Tuskan said.

Q&A WITH

Co-Owners Pete Cich and Doug Sondomowicz

GARDEN PUBLIC MUST ORDER: Tamarack Sunsetter

Thirsty visitors to Park 101 can find what they need at Garden Public. It offers 32 craft brews on tap, as well as wine, Lillet spritzers, sangrias and snacks. During your visit, make sure you try The Frosé—watermelon, sparkling wine and watermelon agua fresca, but offerings vary seasonally. “Southern California is big on fruit—and it’s so accessible here. I always want to use and experiment with whatever I can,” Park 101 Partner and Beverage Director, Rob McShea said.

DELI & DOUGH MUST ORDER: Acai Bowl

This eatery features a grab and go window curbside to make walk-up orders easy for passersby. They offer everything from coffee to indulgent ice cream sandwiches, but the real hero is their acai bowl. With flax and chia seeds, bee pollen, berries and seasonal fruits all served in a cantaloupe bowl, this dish makes for the perfect, healthy pick-me-up. “We take pride in providing the highest quality products from fresh local produce to our organic coffee roasters. The great thing about Deli & Dough is that it's quick, convenient and you can get healthy options on to go," said General Manager Jennifer Pohlkamp.

Make Your Own Frosé Ingredients u 2 cups chilled Pinot Grigio u 1 cups frozen peaches u 1 cups frozen pineapple u 1/2 cup ice Recipe 1. Place the fruit and wine in the blender and pulse until smooth. 2. Add in the ice and blend until you have a slush-like consistency. 3. Pour into glasses and enjoy!

Q: What do you look for when you develop a new restaurant concept? Pete Cich: We look at the location first and foremost. For Park 101, we really envisioned the courtyard space and rooftop ideas. Doug Sondomowicz: We look at the community and we ask, ‘What’s missing?’ We knew this was a good location because it’s a high traffic intersection, close to the ocean. Q: You have worked together on several successful businesses. What has that been like? DS: The Shore Club really started the whole thing. PC: Shore Club was the first thing we did together, which drove us to launch additional venues and concepts. DS: From there, we learned about building a brand and embedding ourselves in the community. PC: We figured out how to cultivate a culture and dive into the community. Q: What were some of the challenges you faced in opening Park 101? PC: It started in 2014—we had land use issues, licensing challenges and we were appealed by some of the neighbors. It took a full year of dealing with those trials and tribulations before we even really were able to really get started. DS: Rain was a major issue on this project. That really set us back, just dealing with the weather. On top of that, we had to move a major gas line, which meant digging up the streets, which was super expensive and took a lot of time. Q: How do you plan to make Park 101 an asset to the Carlsbad Village community? DS: We are going to be their goto family friendly establishment, with a unique food concept and fun atmosphere. PC: We’re creating one big space

for the community. It’s actually almost like its own little city here. We’re providing multiple concepts in one space. DS: Our team does a lot of work within our communities. We do beach clean ups, we work with charities and we try and support the areas that support us. Q: How did you develop the overall concept for Park 101? PC: A lot of it was driven by the licensing. We can’t do table service, so we decided we’d go cafeteria style. We don’t have a full liquor license, so we knew we’d have to be creative with our drinks. We just built things up from there. DS: We worked together with chefs from all of our locations. We threw ideas out there, and if people liked it, we went with it. We did tastings and if we liked something, we put it on the menu. We really wanted to create a food concept where people had options—they could get something super healthy or they could splurge if they wanted to. We really left it up to the diner. PC: We had to make sure we had the healthy stuff because Doug is always trying to watch his girlish figure. Q: What do you like about working in this industry? DS: This is all I know. It’s what I’ve always done, what I grew up around and what I learned how to do. PC: This is the perfect fit for me. Coming from a football, sports background, this gave me that family feeling, that community vibe. All of the people involved, working together to create something awesome. DS: It’s the constant challenge of building something and seeing it come to life. PC: There are so many similarities to working with a team—especially on the management level. We’re constantly coaching, team building, working together. It made for such an easy transition for me. LOCALE MAGAZINE 127

History Lesson u Park 101 inhabits the footprint of the former El Corral pottery store. This business was a mainstay in North County and had been open since 1947. It was the last independently owned seller of Fiesta Dinnerware. The store also sold fountains, pottery and concrete lawn ornaments. The former owner decided to close the doors on El Corral in late 2013, when the partners behind Park 101 were able to snatch up the iconic location and start making their plans shortly after.

TAMARACK DECK MUST ORDER: The Charcuterie Board

Overlooking the rest of Park 101, as well as the heart of Carlsbad Village and the Pacific Ocean, Tamarack Deck serves up an incredible charcuterie board. Choose from a variety of smoked meats and cheeses, and pair them with pickled vegetables, fresh fruits and house-made dips. “If you come to Park, you get a little bit of everything. We've got great food, drinks, and we provide an atmosphere for you to create your own perfect experience,” Pohlkamp said.

There is nothing more stressful than when your phone is on two percent right as you’re trying to capture the perfect picture or hail an Uber. Portable chargers can be pricey and usually not very aesthetically pleasing, but now there's WattzUp Power! Co-creators Richard Vaughn and Wallace Vu started out with a sourcing and production company. WattzUp Power became an idea when they were working with Asics/Onitsuka Tiger to create 3D sneaker USB flash drives. Soon enough, the concept for a sneaker shaped power bank was being drawn up. The first ever chargers were released as a partnership with Asics/Onitsuka Tiger in the summer of 2015, and WattzUp Power officially came to be later that year. WattzUp Power chargers are anything but ordinary. They aim to connect with the people buying them, providing designs that are fun and differ from the simple tube or brick power banks that are already out in the market. They even had special edition chargers with celebrities like DJ Khaled and Kinjaz to brands like Vans and Nickelodeon giving the chargers an extra edge.

Changing Perspective CEO Jeffrey Sternberg says his goal for KOI is to open as many centers as possible in an effort to create a shift in the way we look at and treat illness and our expectations as patients. In fact, at KOI people are referred to as “clients” rather than “patients” because, as Sternberg says, “The idea that we spend thousands of dollars on healthcare and are not treated as we would be spending the same amount of money anywhere else is unacceptable.”

KOI Wellbeing is Helping Patients Be Their Best Selves One Natural Remedy at a Time

WRITTEN BY: MELISSA COLOMBO PHOTOGRAPHED BY: KAMBRIA FISCHER

The koi fish holds tremendous value across cultures as it represents health, strength, individuality, beauty, success and longevity. These are the perfect adjectives to describe KOI Wellbeing, a naturopathic wellness clinic located in La Jolla. KOI offers a variety of services, including a range of IV therapies, nutrient injections, hormone balancing, consultations with naturopathic doctors, specialty lab testing and more. CEO Jeffrey Sternberg, Co-Owner Leah Freeland and Medical Director Dr. Brooke Leverone created KOI Wellbeing with a mission to provide easily accessible healthcare solutions, based on natural elements and grounded in science, that allow people to function at their full capacity.

135

Sternberg says that the idea for developing KOI came after his own visit to a naturopathic doctor who introduced him to IV therapy. “I’d never had that experience, where he sat down and took a great deal of time with me and explained that this (being infused with vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants and amino acids) is what it would feel like if I was where I was supposed to be. And I walked out feeling fantastic,” said Sternberg. Sternberg got his start in the health field in traditional Western medicine. However, he began to see the value in personalized, sciencebased naturopathic treatment following his experience. He liked that naturopathic medicine and techniques, rather than just treating and suppressing symptoms with medications, are a quantifiable way not only to see what people are lacking, but also target the issue with little to no side effects.

Freeland started her career in public accounting at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Working in the healthcare field with businesses ranging from start ups to Fortune 500 companies, she is excited to be able to merge her professional skills with her passion for naturopathic medicine.

F

She believes that a major part of naturopathic medicine is understanding the impact it has on people and being mindful of the trust that clients put in naturopathic healthcare. That’s where Freeland sees KOI’s use of quantifiable lab testing as being important in proving whether a treatment or recommendation works. “When people come in, they’re entrusting you with their health, and that’s an important responsibility we don’t take lightly. We provide an environment in which the client optimizes their health and receives the care they deserve,” said Freeland.

course at Bastyr University. “I was really excited to be able to be in a setting like this, where it was so accessible and to have people answer screening questions, receive the appropriate treatment and walk out the door feeling so much better,” said Leverone. IV therapies have seen a major spike in popularity over the last few years among everyone from celebrities and wellknown bloggers to everyday people. KOI is no exception as their IV therapies are consistently one of their most popular forms of treatment. “You’re optimizing performance on every level when you’re getting all your required nutrients and the IV therapy is a quality, immediate treatment,” said Dr. Leverone. “This is especially true for clients with chronic conditions— those clients are having huge benefits as a result. However, they are really for everyone looking to optimize their wellness and athletic performance.”

Making their clients feel relaxed and well-cared for is an important part of KOI Wellbeing. The center even designed their office with the intention to resemble a spa, rather than a doctor’s office. While appointments are offered, they are not required for most services.

Many clients opt for consultations with KOI’s naturopathic doctors in order to understand the root cause of their illness or condition, and where their deficiencies lie. KOI’s doctors typically order lab and/or genetic testing, create a detailed treatment plan and spend an hour going over test results and recommendations.

“That helps to lessen the barrier when taking care of yourself,” said Sternberg. “You’re more likely to go get seen if you don’t have to wait and make the appointment. I think medicine needs to be that way—it shouldn't be difficult.”

For those still skeptical of naturopathic techniques, it’s important to remember that natural doctors are trained, primary care physicians in the state of California and are required to continue their education and maintain a license to practice medicine.

Dr. Leverone’s background is slightly different than that of her colleagues, as she grew up with a strong focus on eating healthy and opting for natural remedies instead of medicinal. Naturally, after graduating from the UCSD pre-med program, she found a home in practicing naturopathic medicine and was invited by Freeland to be a part of opening KOI in its early stages.

“We want to avoid skepticism as much as possible,” adds Sternberg. “Everything we do here has to be quantifiable and backed by science.”

“I’ve done IV therapy for years,” said Dr. Leverone who teaches the IV Infusion

136 LOCALE MAGAZINE

And for those who are still unsure, Freeland’s advice is simple. “Just come in! We have clients that come in with a ton of questions. And once they realize how calming and beneficial everything is and how great and welcoming the staff is, they leave their reservations at the door.”

Living a Healthy Life KOI Wellbeing was opened with the idea that people have a right to address their health concerns, overall wellness and to ultimately reach optimum health. “And that shouldn’t be restricted or limited or otherwise kept from them by insurance companies or medical systems,” said Sternberg.

Services Offered at KOI Wellbeing • IV Therapy • Nutrient Injections • Naturopathic Doctor • Hormone Balancing • Bioidentical Hormones • Detoxification Programs • Specialty Lab + Genetic Testing • PRP Facials

Leggings have become the most versatile piece in every closet. To take your legging game to the next level, Goldsheep’s stand-out leggings are here to help you make a statement.

Started by Keri Wilson, Goldsheep is not about taking the safe route; they know it’s better to stand out than to blend in. Growing up in Orange County, creativity was always a part of Wilson. From spray-painting murals and sewing her friend’s clothes, the idea for Goldsheep was always there, but it truly came to life in New York. “I used to walk to work every day in the city and see thousands of black [leggings] walking. I thought it looked so boring. I would also notice all the street art throughout the city. I started taking pictures of the street art and the idea came to me that it would be so awesome to have this art on my legs. I made my first prototype in my bedroom,” said Wilson. Each legging is unique since they are handmade when they’re ordered. “Every print is a photograph or piece of art created in 138 LOCALE MAGAZINE

our shop in Costa Mesa. I think at this point it’s very easy to spot a Goldsheep print because it's super bright and fun and is like pop art on legs,” said Wilson. For Wilson, coming up with designs is a fun task and she sees art in the ordinary. “I honestly get my inspiration everywhere.” Not only do they want to dress everyone in fun prints, they also want to give back. One of their newest collections is inspired by Girl Scouts and proceeds go to benefit Troop 6000 in New York, which is made up of young girls in the New York shelter system. Goldsheep is manufactured in Orange County, bringing it back to Wilson’s roots. Mainly available online, you can find leggings in 17 locations around California. Goldsheep expanded to include shirts and accessories so you can polish off your look. Once you start, you won’t be able to stop buying these soft, trendy leggings—nor will you want to.

NIKKI HARTH, cofounder of Surfhouse Adventures in Leucadia, is also the CSO, or Chief Stoke Officer. He wants nothing more than to stoke you out, and to do that he built a boutique motel designed to enable travelers to experience surf breaks in his hometown.

N

Harth and his brother Sander grew up a mile from Surfhouse, and ask guests to step into their world. Guests are encouraged to experience their hometown by riding their waves, eating food from their favorite restaurants and experiencing their Southern California life. That’s why we decided to find out more about Harth, and how he uses his hometown to share the stoke.

Q: How does Surfhouse Adventures “share the stoke”? Nikki Harth: California Surf Adventures was our first business where we provided surf tours and camps. But we had to put people in other hotels. Now they can stay at Surfhouse. But a hotel can only be so much, and where it’s located can make a big part of your experience. We’re stoked on Leucadia, and we’d like our guests to be also. Q: What made you open a boutique motel in your own community? NH: When we were growing up, our family from Norway would come to visit. There was nowhere in Encinitas to stay, so they always stayed at our houses. We found this location a long time ago and kept our eye on it. You can’t beat it; you’re right in the heart of Leucadia. We wanted to give people a taste of Leucadia and that’s what this gives them. Q: How do you go about customizing a surf experience? NH: It’s all based on their comfort level and what they’re looking for. If they’ve never surfed before we won’t go to the big breaks. We have a Southern California ‘hit list’ where we visit some of the hot spots and more challenging waves.

ONE IN A MILLION Surfhouse is very much a self-serving boutique motel. Not only is there no reception area, but their bookings are handled through Airbnb. This is part of a new division of Airbnb for hotels, motels and B&Bs. Surfhouse is one of the first. PARTY TIME Surfhouse offers the option of booking out the entire hotel. Designed for small businesses, sales meetings and corporate retreats, one of the rooms can transform into an office. It has a Murphy bed and a conference table—in the shape of a surfboard, of course.

Q: Can you name a few breaks off the “hit list,” and what you like about those breaks? NH: There’s Trestles up the way, which is iconic for people visiting California. There’s also San Onofre, and those are two of the iconic breaks in San Diego. We also like to head to La Jolla, which is a little more scenic, and picks up good swells in the winter. But usually we read the forecasts and find the best waves in North County and go for those. Q: You’re still young, but there’s no doubt you found your home here. Do you see yourself here for the rest of your life? NH: This is the place where I have roots, and our entire family all live within a mile of each other. There’s definitely more travel to be done, and experiencing new places, but Leucadia is always the home that we’ll come back to. We like that fun, small town vibe. Q: You guys don’t have coffee machines in your rooms. Why is that? NH: Everywhere up and down the 101 corridor there are ‘mom and pop’ businesses we want to support. There’s The Beer Room, The Regal Seagull and Surfy

Surfy [Surf Shop]. I’ve gotten to know the owners there very well, and not always just business wise. We knew them from long before Surfhouse. And it’s a good model to keep them in business so they don’t die out. Q: Do you feel that when you share the Leucadia experience, you’re asking people to experience a part of your life? NH: Yes. We have our recommendation book for guests when they show up. All of those are places I go during the week, and they’ll probably see me there. I’ll see every guest at coffee in the morning, or The Regal Seagull or on the waves. They sort of step into my bubble. Q: What can folks expect from Surfhouse Adventures in the future? NH: [We are going to start to] run week long surf camps. They’ll include accommodations, breakfast and then afterwards we’ll go on a surf guided trip depending on your ability. So if you’re better, we might drive to find some more challenging breaks, but beginners surf Beacon’s. Come join us, we’ll stoke you out.

Waterman was born in LA, but his family relocated to Santa Barbara when he was a kid. Playing at the beach, soaking up the sun and always being in the ocean was standard. Every summer, his family would head to the East Coast to visit relatives. Even though the beaches were different, the fun and frolic were still the same. Growing up in such an idyllic way would prove to be the catalyst that changed his life. In 2016, after spending over a decade in and around the entertainment industry, Waterman wanted something more, “I wanted to produce something tangible

Making quality, durable pool floats in gorgeous colors and patterns seemed like the perfect way to have fun and make good use of his experience with beach living. Waterman knew that Float Naked could bring a special twist to the luxury pool float market: “We knew we could complement the industry and yet still retain our unique style,” said Waterman. Needless to say, Float Naked has received an incredible response in a short period. Starting out with an online store and an Instagram following, Float Naked will soon be available in select stores around the US and Australia. A new collection for summer 2017 is available, and a collaboration with Parker Palm Springs is currently in the works. Float Naked also plans to put together a percentage of sales to donate to Oceana and the Surfrider Foundation in the near future. Waterman is enjoying all the success that Float Naked has brought. “It’s a really exciting time now. We try to keep our growth as organic as possible, but we never know what that tipping point will be,” said Waterman.

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Duvinh Ta: I was born and raised in San Diego. I left for a little while for culinary school in San Francisco. I then moved to Hawaii and found this company. I’ve been with this company for about 13 years now. I spent a little over a year in Hawaii at Kula Grill, and I’ve been here around 12 years. I have been the chef for about three years. Jake’s is pretty much my family. The office manager even married my wife and I! Q: What’s your goal running Jake’s kitchen? DT: I want the restaurant to be a full experience. I want guests to walk in through the door and feel welcomed as if they are a guest in someone’s home. I want them to leave feeling happy and full. Q: Where do you draw inspiration from? DT: I get ingredient inspiration from going out to eat and traveling. Cookbooks as well. Q: What’s your favorite dish to prepare at Jake’s Del Mar? DT: The seafood pot—the amount of love that goes into the tomato saffron broth! Q: What are some hidden gems on the menu? DT: Our ribs! We’re known as a seafood restaurant, so they’re often overlooked. The almond crusted scallops and Strawberry Shortcake at dinnertime too. My favorite brunch items are the egg white frittata, crab benedict and French toast. Q: What should guests look forward to at Jake’s Del Mar? DT: Guests should look for a seasonal menu—that’s a big push. But, we want them to also be able to find things on the menu that they have loved for years. We’ll always be changing, but have our roots.

NO NEED TO BOOK THAT TRIP TO ITALY WHEN YOU CAN HAVE YOUR PIECE OF MEDITERRANEAN PARADISE IN SAN DIEGO

WRITTEN BY: SARAH HOOD PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: WILLIS ALLEN REAL ESTATE

Winding its way through eucalyptus-lined hillsides and past one-lane drives leading up to sprawling estates, San Dieguito Road enchants passersby with its tantalizing glimpses of long-established private communities. But as you travel down the eastern-most section of the road, you’ll find yourself approaching a rather different sort of community—just as exclusive as its neighbors to the west, and yet warmer and more openaired. Welcome to Santaluz, the newest addition to San Diego County’s collection of gated communities and, as its elegant name implies, an almost holy location for the residents who adore their sunlight-bathed houses.

VIEWS During the summer, the estate’s large back patio doubles as front row seats for the community’s hot air balloon festival.

ou can’t help but wonder if you have entered into another world as you proceed, with the Tuscan-style homes evoking images of timeless little villages situated against a Mediterranean landscape. A pristine golf course lies amongst the gentle, grassy hillsides and tidy walking trails, and nestled between the eleventh and twelfth greens is a private driveway belonging to an estate of particular elegance. When you reach the end of the lane after a lengthy drive under a canopy of olive trees, you realize that you have discovered the ultimate destination for privacy—6,274 square feet of paradise. The single-level property’s most notable feature is on display the minute you pull up on the breezeway: this Hacienda-style house has been intentionally designed for both indoor and outdoor living. When you set foot in the courtyard by the front entryway, you are greeted by a spectacular lounge area, complete with an outdoor kitchen for evening barbecues. Just through the front doors is a living room that, just like nearly all the other rooms, offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding canyons. Furnishings in various shades of beige, brown and gold complement the chiseled-stone floor and the wood ceiling. To the immediate left of the front door is a wrought iron entryway that welcomes you into the dining area. Bordered by ceiling-high cabinets along the walls and by tall French doors on the far side of the room, this airy space is an ideal setting for wining and dining, especially since the little passage to the right contains a built-in wine cellar. Walk straight across the intersecting

hallway and you’ll find yourself in a spacious kitchen featuring more dark wood custom cabinets, granite countertops with a stone backsplash, and an enormous island. The presence of side-by-side refrigerators and a double oven hints at infinite cooking possibilities, while the adjoining family room promises to perk up your afternoon through its onyx-lined mini-bar. Two parallel hallways on the left-hand side of the kitchen lead you to a secondary wing whose rooms skillfully combine luxury with functionality. Just off the kitchen, you find a pantry with bright terra-cotta-colored walls, while the next room on the right displays a laundry area large enough for you to wash, fold and organize in one clean and convenient spot. Down the hall you’ll see one of six bathrooms, which maintains the sleek brown and beige color theme with a tiled shower, dappled onyx countertops and deep bronze details adding spots of contrast on the light fixtures and faucets. Stepping into the last room in the corridor denotes a notable shift in tone as you enter a game room that exudes a far more casual atmosphere than anything you’ve seen in the rest of the house so far. Complete with a pool table and mounted TV on the wall, it’s the perfect place to wind down after a long drive. As you turn to the right of the living room, you will find a hallway that will take you to the heart of the primary wing of the house, where five bedrooms, an office and the rest of the bathrooms are located. The office showcases handsome built-in bookcases and a fireplace hewn from stone, along with a cast-iron chandelier. The other spare rooms all beckon you in for a bit of rest after a long day and entice you to sit at vanities

tucked into alcoves or enjoy a relaxing steam shower in their bathrooms (some of which contain plenty of closet space). However, the final room in the corridor is the ultimate treat in pampering: the master suite surrounds you in tranquility and enchants you with an incredible view of the property. Once you tear your eyes away from the vaulted ceiling and spotless Travertine floors, you’ll be drawn into the enormous walk-in closet that can house even the most expansive of wardrobes. Also enclosed in this suite is a lavish bathroom in which you can marvel at the twin sinks, spotless free-standing tub and the full shower that appears to be the size of a small sauna. Once you move outside to the pool and recreation areas, it becomes apparent that no expense has been spared to make this already remarkable house a vacationer’s dream hideaway. The pool itself is a wonder to behold: surrounded by natural stone and flanked by a graceful waterfall where it meets the adjacent hot tub. Multiple fountains and outdoor furniture dot the premises, along with fire pits for marshmallow roasting and a couple of bocce ball pits for additional fun and games. It is here, beyond the walls of the house, where you enjoy the best views that Santaluz has to offer—views that extend all the way to La Jolla on exceptionally clear days. As you bid farewell to this one-of-a-kind estate, you feel a sensation almost akin to leaving for home after a weekend getaway. Having had a taste of the most exquisite lifestyle imaginable and having indulged in unbelievable pampering, you’ll wish that you could stay a little longer before plunging back into reality.
