IT’S A COOK-OFF! ®

EDITOR'S NOTE What makes you come alive? For me, it’s a variety of things. Dribbling a basketball, listening to the new Drake album, savoring a bite of a tasty meal, or going on a much-needed family vacation—all things that give me a boost to keep going and to keep striving. In this issue, I hope you feel refreshed, recharged and overcome with a new sense of willingness to take on the days ahead. A great place to start is our Alive Experts (pg. 51); seven women who are straight killing the game in their respected fields, and who beg to ask the question, “Nice for what?” Keep the motivation going with our Alive Expert spotlight on the city’s first pro rugby team, the San Diego Legion (pg. 86). Who knows, maybe you’ll even want to suit up and hop in a scrum after reading their story. Plus, our cover star shows us how creating music makes him feel alive (pg. 76). Get a behind-the-scenes look at one of

reggae’s hottest artists with a last name you’ve probably heard of, Ziggy Marley. If food gets your juices overflowing, flip to our Foodie Experts (pg. 99) who dish on their one-of-a-kind creations that look good enough to eat right off the glossy page (Note to self: attempt to input scratch-andsniff pages in next issue). Need an escape? Cabo is calling your name! Our Escape Feature (pg. 149) on the top destinations in Los Cabos and Cabo San Lucas is a must read. The pages will transport you to sandy beaches and out-of-this-world spa treatments, no passport necessary. Leave this story open on your coffee table as a major hint to your bae. So, I’ll ask you again: What makes you come alive? Sit with this question as you read this September issue and whatever it may be, whatever gives you butterflies, I encourage you to pursue it wholeheartedly.

If only the walls of The Roxy could talk. They’d probably playback live sets of Neil Young or Bruce Springsteen or B.B. King or Prince, all in their prime. They’d recollect when Bob Marley & The Wailers made an appearance in 1975, and what the crowd was like. Well, 43 years later, almost to the day, David “Ziggy” Marley’s name is in lights out front.

I

But before the 9 p.m. showtime that night, Ziggy arrives to an empty Roxy at 10 a.m. for the cover shoot. Backpack slung over one shoulder, he’s every bit of the laid-back guy you’d imagine. “It was a blast working with Ziggy Marley,” said photographer Ryan Hensley about the cover shoot. “As usual, I shot with my tried-and-true Canon 5D mark III to capture every moment in the greatest detail.” Hensley said his favorite part of the day was when Ziggy spontaneously started playing and singing “Rebellion Rises” with his guitar for the shot. And I think we’d all agree the impromptu acoustic set was all our favorites. Makeup artist Lexi Kleyla reflects on the “amazing moment in time” when she had the opportunity to groom Marley.

“I wanted to keep his grooming very minimal and only use a few important products,” she said. “I started with the Instant De-Frizzer by Living Proof to keep any flyaway hairs down. Then I moisturized his skin with Bogavia’s Essential Face Cream followed up with a small amount of Ultimate Coverage Foundation by Becca Cosmetics. He looked amazing!” Speaking of amazing, his ‘fit for the shoot was on point, reflecting not only his style but also the style and vibe of the location. We can thank wardrobe stylist Teresita Marie for that. “Ziggy is a total rockstar. He's a truly creative artist that easily connects with his outfits and makes it looks so effortless. I was able to create cool, masculine and totally rugged looks that he's been pulling off for years but with just a little more sauce,” she added that he liked his looks so much, he took some to go. “He fell in love with a vintage pair of boots I found at a shop in Santa Cruz around 2010. Eight years later, they're going on tour!” Finishing up his last leg of touring in September, the true rebel with a cause, fighter for peace and advocate for love, Ziggy, and his impactful lyrics, are just what we need right now. One love!

This Vegan Dishes on His Favorite Spicy Foodie Spots Around San Diego

EXPERT: Ricky Borja CREDENTIALS: Vice President of Hotel Operations, Viejas Casino & Resort MONDAY ¢ A great Mexican place to take friends and family to (vegan or not) is Ranchos Cocina in North Park. Their menu is large in variety (over 80 selections), authentic and for me, about 80 percent of the menu items can be made vegan. Ask for the spicy salsas—spicy cilantro salsa is my favorite. www.ranchoscocinanorthpark.com

TUESDAY ¢ I traditionally ask my colleague David (Vice President of Food & Beverage) to pick us up some fast food breakfast at none other than Plant Power Fast Food. All of their items are vegan—The Big Zac will change your perspective on a vegan meal. www.plantpowerfastfood.com

WEDNESDAY ¢ My favorite go-to spot is our newly-opened Ginger Noodle Bar, which is a Southeast Asian fusion, quick-serve concept. My favorite, since I am sucker for spice, is the Thai fried rice. I have them prepared with no egg, no chicken, extra veggies, add tofu and all the chili peppers they have on the line. www.viejas.com

THURSDAY ¢ There isn't anything too hot for me—anything. Along my search for heat, I found my favorite restaurant, Plumeria in University Heights. Puppies Make Me Happy will do just that—make you happy. Do Some Good Puppies Make Me Happy donated over $60,000 in 2017 to a variety of dog charities.

Puppies Make Me Happy, an apparel company launched in 2013, was started by Niels Skou in hopes of bringing positivity to the world with products that you can’t help but smile when you see. Initially, the company was said to help raise money for hearing aids for hardof-hearing dogs. Though this mission might not have been their sole focus, Puppies Make Me Happy has done quite a bit to help dogs in need; in fact, 100 percent of the proceeds from their Rescue Puppies line benefits dog-related charities and shelters.

The company began designing and selling t-shirts inspired by a mutual friend, the founder of Groceries Apparel, but since then, has expanded to include a variety of products like activewear, swimwear, tank tops, beanies, hats and, in the near future, highperformance sunglasses. Not only do they sell products that make dog parents everywhere want to get their wallets out, but they also make sure everything on their site is both high quality and ecofriendly. Puppies Make Me Happy also cuts, sews and prints their line in LA, using an American-made fabric termed “PuppySoft” that simulates petting a soft puppy.

Whether you’re looking to sport your new swimsuit to the beach, your leggings to the gym or just snuggle up with your pup in your super-soft tee, Puppies Make Me Happy will do just that—make you happy.

WHO RUN THE WORLD? THESE LOCAL BUSINESS WOMEN SHARE ADVICE ON HOW THEY ARE KILLING IT IN THEIR FIELD

WRITTEN BY: EMILY TORRES

PHOTOGRAPHED BY: BHARDI KUBENDRAN

Girlboss (n): a strong, ambitious, curious woman redefining success on her own terms. San Diego isn’t just beaches and bars. It’s filled to the brim with females taking the reins across all industries—from woodworking to public relations to restaurants. LOCALE sits down with these women warriors to get insight into how they are leading their businesses and living their dreams.

AMANDA WHITWORTH Credentials: Founder, Sawdust + Soul DRESS THE PART • Amanda feels the most herself when she’s in overalls in her shop with sawdust flying around. AMANDA IN THREE WORDS: • Soulful • Sincere • Sassy

IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY • Both of Amanda’s parents owned their own businesses, her mother an interior designer, her father a carpenter, so she grew up with an entrepreneurial spirit.

“I’ve also learned the art of taking breaks when I need to. You can’t expect to constantly produce if you [aren't] taking adequate time to rest. I mean really rest. Get lost in a book, go on a hike, get in nature, see friends, travel. Disconnect. Turn everything off. When I do, I always come back to my art with fresh eyes and a new perspective.” “I do my best to stay in alignment with my integrity. I try really hard every day to just be myself, regardless of what people think of me or my work. I think to be successful, you have to do that.” “I recently realized the importance of staying connected to other creatives in a stage of collaboration—either physically or just running ideas by them.” J PUBLIC RELATIONS 2341 5th Ave San Diego, CA 92101 619.255.7069 www.jpublicrelations.com

Q&A • Jamie believes in asking these two questions during any misstep in the business: “What was my role? How did I contribute?”

“I am a huge proponent of managing in the moment. If I think someone’s idea is brilliant, I’ll tell them. I also make sure that if there is a problem about something, I voice it, rather than sitting as I stew on it. It creates an open work environment, where you know where you stand, ultimately fostering collaboration and confidence.” “I think I was inspired by my maternal grandmother, who was one of the hardest workers. She always told me that if I wanted something, I could have it—if I worked for it and believed I could get somewhere. It didn’t matter if I was the smartest person in the room; if I was willing to work hard, I could get it.”

“‘The devil is in the details’ is not a lie. While it is important to define the global vision of your brand, your company culture, efficiency and long-term success is sustained by knowing who you are and what you do, from the ground up.” “To grow, you have to be willing to take risks. Yet, it’s important to calculate that risk. The fear of failure shouldn’t stop you. Remembering past failures and being reminded of how you overcame them is a great motivator and source of strength.” “Early on in my career I didn’t handle confrontation well. I was then reminded of my mother's voice when I was a young girl and had a conflict with a friend or foe. First, she would ask ‘What did you do?’ and then ‘How do you think the other person feels?’ This has become the greatest tool for me to resolve differences, whether with myself and others, or between team members.” GASLAMP QUARTER ASSOCIATION 614 5th Avenue, Ste E San Diego, CA 92101 619.233.5227 www.gaslamp.org

“The challenge I've overcome in the historically male-dominated field of tattooing has been to carve out a leadership space of my own so I could bring along my own way of doing things. There wasn't exactly a beaten path ahead of me, but it’s been rewarding to find my own way.” “My secret sauce is one part sugar and 10 parts red hot chili oil.” “Every morning, I'm motivated by my enthusiasm for the amazing animals and people around me, including my two pit bulls Buju and River, the love of my life Loni, the amazing artists at BUJU Tattoo and all of our wonderful clients.”

“To be honest, I debated whether or not to do this interview because it’s hard to look at myself as a ‘successful woman in business,’ but you know what? I am! I, like many other women, feel self-doubt and set self-imposed barriers. I support, encourage and uplift other women, but when it comes to my own accolades, I get shy. I worked hard to get to where I am, and I shouldn’t be embarrassed to celebrate my success.” “As I get older, I’ve learned to care less about what others think about me and just be my authentic self. TRAVEL BUG • In her spare time, Nichole travels and has visited 12 countries and counting.

“I did play it safe at first—only creating items that were trendy and stayed within the lines. It wasn’t until 2016 when a fire within grew, forcing me to acknowledge how I only get one chance in life, so I better do it right. That means celebrating the person I am and who I want to be—not censoring or dimming myself for the benefit of others.” “For me personally, being a successful woman is truly about being aware of my own happiness and in control of my life as it is, day to day. I have what I need. I’m in the position to give some of what I have to others.” “I have a business in which people purchase my items to express and celebrate themselves. SHOULDER BLADE RETRACTIONS

“Starting on all fours, shoulders stacked over wrists and hips stacked over knees. Keep core engaged. Without bending the elbows, squeeze your shoulder blades together. Then create the action of pressing the floor away and pull your shoulder blades apart, like you are puffing up your upper back. Then repeat by retracting shoulder blades (squeezing together) then pressing away. To make this exercise harder, come into a plank pose with knees off the ground.”

AquaVie Fitness + Wellness Club: Photographed By: Nick Isabella | Styled By: Janelle Arreola | Hair & Makeup By: Lisa Leedy | Model: Loree Rapp of Brand Model & Talent, www.brandtalent.net

2

PUSH-UPS

“This one is really basic but it’s one of the best. Work on form. Don’t worry about going all the way to the floor, instead focus on [keeping the] core engaged and squeezing your shoulder blades together as you bend your elbows. See how many you can do with perfect form instead of how many total reps you can do. [This] can always be done on the knees to make it easier.”

3

EXERCISE BAND CURLS & EXTERNAL ROTATION

“Using an exercise band, place the center of one foot (for easier) or two feet (for harder) on the middle of the band with the handles in each hand. Stand tall, shoulders pulled back. Imagine as if you have a book on your head. Curl the band half way up, pause, then externally rotate arms by pressing thumbs away. Keep elbows close to the body. Bring arms back in and lower back down.”

4

ROW INTO TRICEP EXTENSION

“Using a bench (or two chairs if at home) place the same knee and hand on the bench. Kickstand the other leg so that hips are level. Using a dumbbell, draw elbow in towards ribs, pause there and extend arm straight for the tricep extension, bend back in and return to starting position.”

5

COMBINE ARMS IN FULL-BODY MOVEMENTS

“To get extra arm work, hold weights in hands and do shoulder presses while lunging. Or in between sets of lower body or abs do a small set of push-ups. Yoga is also another way to tone arms. Find different ways to incorporate them into your workouts. One of my favorites is a squat with a bicep curl into a shoulder press.”

DO WORK Ò When it comes to home workouts, Elyssa likes the TRX. “My favorite piece of equipment is the TRX Trainer. It can be pricey, but it’s worth the investment. You can do a whole body workout and take it with you when you travel.”

BUNS OF STEAL 1

USE YOUR LEG

“The same way we lift weights to tone our biceps or other body parts to effectively get every corner of the ‘seat,’ as we call it in Pure Barre, is to let the leg be the weight. You want to effectively use the butt to lift the leg up and down like a weight.”

2

SMALL MOVEMENTS

“Go small when using just the glutes, rather than giving the body the option to have stronger muscles take over.”

3

TUCK YOUR HIPS

“Use opposing forces to get the most out of your glute workout. By tucking your hips under, sliding your leg back and then lifting, you get the most out of the work that is being done. You want to isolate the glutes.”

Photographed By: David A. Hernandez | Hair & Makeup By: Heather Balaam | Model: Madison Ashley of Brand Model & Talent, www.brandtalent.net

4

HEAVY TAILBONE

“By keeping your tailbone heavy you are protecting your back and making sure most of the work goes into the butt instead of the back, which is a common mistake when doing anything related to the seat section.”

5

SUPPORTING LEG

“Most times in seat section, the supporting leg works as much as the working leg. It’s a dual exercise so you are getting work on both sides even though it feels like all the movements are coming from one leg at a time.”

6

KEEP IT IN YOUR CORE

“Core is key for proper alignment and ensures that you are focusing on all the right points of contact. It starts at the core to hold the body in the correct spot so you can just focus on making the movements come from the seat.”

7

STRETCH IT OUT

LAZY DAISY Ò We get it. Sometimes you can’t squeeze in a workout. Here are some sneaky ways to work your abs on those days you are stretched for time: 1. When sitting at your desk, contract your ab muscles, pulling your belly button towards your spine. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 10 times. 2. Another great ab trick to try at the office is to lift your feet off the ground, holding for 10-15 seconds at a time, 10 times. You can start off lifting one foot at a time if needed.

Z I G G Y M A R L E Y walks into the empty, dark room with a huge smile on his face. He takes in a deep breath, “Ah, The Roxy,” he says looking out onto the undressed, spot-lit stage where he’ll be jamming later that night. He continues to slowly move throughout the room, dreadlocks grazing the back of his knees, continually in awe. He looks back at his entourage and repeats to himself, “It’s the Roxy!” They nod in acknowledgement of the historical music venue on Sunset Boulevard. It’s his favorite club venue to perform in to date, and it’s written all over his face.

During the photo shoot, Marley starts strumming his favorite song off his new Rebellion Rises album, the song with the same name. An unplugged acoustic version of the chorus begins to fill the hot room. “Rebellion rises,” the lyrics continue. “Walks of life, let’s stand together/ Dance all night with each other/ Love is its weakness/ The system I protest/ And we are its biggest threat/ The plague of consciousness.” It really becomes more of an anthem than anything else; words that you should continually repeat to yourself as you are set to brace the day. This song, and all 10 songs on Marley’s recent album, goes beyond surface level. The lyrics and truths it elicit oozes out the speakers and grabs hold of your soul, your feelings and your empathy for humanity. “I wanted to give a voice to humanity,” Marley, eldest son of reggae icon Bob Marley, says about the album. “I wanted to encourage humanity.” And man, don’t we need it. In a world today that is in no greater need than to be ‘plagued by consciousness,’ relaying an encouraging message is what Marleys are so very good at—three little birds and all. Music is typically a mirror of what is being reflected by current society. But, Marley says that he moved on from ‘political music’ roughly 10 years ago. He’s gone on record to say that he used to be a political musician but is now a spiritual one. “If I’m serious about connecting people to music, I have to connect on a human-tohuman level,” he said in a Big Think interview. “We cannot change the political or social system of the world unless we change us as individuals.” In his “Rebellion Rises” music video, there are people—all shapes, colors and sizes—holding a piece of cardboard with a portion of the lyrics on it as if to symbolize a protest sign, something we far too often witness on our news feed. But Marley challenges us

with his new album. He challenges us to not think of the word ‘rebellion’ as a negative connotation, but rather in a new affirmative light. “My inspiration was to cause a rebellion that entails the opening of our hearts. That entails the awareness, the consciousness and to bring the world more together. There is divisiveness, there’s war, there’s racism—and that’s what the rebellion is for. Humanity inspired me,” he said. “We’ve been against things, but no one ever focuses on what we are for so we can’t really go out and get it. We have to put all of our energy in what we are for.” Music is a vessel to share how we’re really feeling, how we’re feeling about ourselves, humankind and the well being of our planet. Through this art form, the eight-time Grammy Award winner shows us that your art can be your message to the people. “This album talks a lot more about outer change, change within society. Which still entails the change within oneself, but this album is more about outward looking in, rather than the inward looking out.” These themes are universal; this isn’t only an American thing that we need to hear, it’s a global thing. Going on an international and national tour for almost two years continually, the African drum percussions and Jamaican guitar licks that accompany Marley’s impactful musical lines go past borders, he says. “I’m very happy to see these songs and the messages that they entail is translating beyond language. Everybody can’t understand when I sing ‘Circle of Peace,’ not everybody can understand when I sing the song ‘Rebellion Rises,’ but it connects with all human beings.” He doesn’t want them to be concerts, but rallies rather—a rally full of rebels.

“My inspiration was to cause a rebellion that entails the opening of our hearts. That entails the awareness, the consciousness, and to bring the world more together.” —ZIGGY MARLEY

“This is the reaction to what we are presenting to the people, that they are feeling this camaraderie, this rebellion—in the most positive sense of the word ‘rebellion,’” he said. “Not the stereotypical way with violence, but rebellion with peace and love.” Marley has a way with words that after sitting, grooving or moving to his entire 35-minute album or fangirling at his sometimes three-hour shows, you walk away changed in some way. The lyrics have soul, as he explains, and without that, they cannot live on. “I know what them feel, I see what them feel. Them feel humanity; them feel a connection with other human beings. Them feel a oneness with each other,” his voice is steady, unwavering talking about the live crowd. “Them feel a power because when human beings stand up for good in this planet, it is the most powerful thing. When we stand up for love and peace and justice together, without biases and hate. And [when we] peacefully speak of these things we want to see, it’s the most powerful thing that could ever be.”

M

Marley was born in the ghettos of Trench Town, Jamaica, but as his father became more renown they were able to move out. And yet, he always took them back to where they came from. They would return to serve and be surrounded with the impoverished. Marley just says it’s who he is. Those seeds planted way back then take root today with his continued philanthropic work in communities around the globe. Much like his foundation URGE, Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment, that aims to aid children in Jamaica, Africa and wherever else is in need through health, education and awareness about the environment. Recently, CNN coverage of a massive pile up of plastic and pollution in the ocean near the Dominican Republic went viral. Marley shared it on his Instagram, and took it personally to decide that he too needed to make a change. “Even if I cannot completely stop using plastic, I want to reduce my plastic use. Even the littlest thing that you can do is as effective as the biggest thing because everything adds up. It’s the small things that add up that make the change,” he said.

And if you, too, want to help change the world, he encourages you to also take small steps to make a big impact. “Small things count. You don’t have to be a legend or a president; it’s every little thing. Pick what you see—whether it be the environment, whether it be racism—and it’s the little things you do.” Then, after a beat, he added, “To change the world, it starts with how you interact with people that you see everyday. Just everyday interactions with other human beings; every little thing you do has an impact.” This, he says, is one of the major life lessons he took from his dad. A legend in the music industry, Bob Marley was also a person who sought after making the world a better place in anyway he could. He was a man of action, and we know actions speak louder than words. Ziggy, one of 11 children, said it was how his father interacted with people, talked with people— all things by doing, not by him telling him what to do. “Live the good life, don’t talk the good life,” he reflected on what he continues to put in practice from his father. Ziggy was 12 years old when his father died from cancer. “Live a positive life, live a loving life, live a life that is not only for ourselves but a service to others also. You have to take care of yourself, of course, but you still have to set that example that doing good for other people is very rewarding in itself. “Lead by example is a lesson I would take from my father, and I will pass it down to my children,” he added, “and hopefully, my life is a good example for them to see what can be done, not just for yourself, but for others.” Now the head-nodding beat of “One Love” is reverberating off The Roxy’s walls. The sold-out show is singing along while Ziggy and his band serenade them with a classic. He’s dripping with sweat, his eyes are closed; Marley transforms into a new persona on stage. The red, yellow and green lights beam down illuminating this homage to his late father. The entire set list is filled with musical chords that intertwine and unite the world. As the tour continues throughout North America, Marley will continue to spread the music, and spread a whole lot of love.

Rather, it’s the trampling of fresh grass, followed by plangent cheers from thousands of onlookers reverberating off the bleachers at University of San Diego’s Torero Stadium from the efforts of the city’s first professional rugby team: the San Diego Legion. While rugby may not be nearly as ubiquitous as any of the major sports in the United States, SD Legion have been

According to head coach Rob Hoadley, one of the largest turnouts came towards the beginning of the year and steadily progressed from there. “Our crowds have grown, and obviously, each week there’s more at stake,” he said. “A great game was our second home game against Utah (Warriors) where we won with literally the last player of the game. And really I think the crowd got us over the line, they were unbelievable—it’s the loudest I heard this place for rugby. So that got people a lot more excited about it. So when we played last week, it was a critical week against Austin, and it was the largest crowd we had.” That game resulted in a 31-17 win for Legion, before capping off their regular season with a convincing 23-5 victory over the previously undefeated Glendale Raptors, thereby cementing their first season with an impressive record of 5-3, and clinching a playoff berth. This was certainly no small feat for an expansion team. Indeed, those clubs typically take time to grow across many sports. Torero Stadium is no slouch of a venue—it’s an expansive, comfortable space, housing the university’s football, along with men’s and women’s soccer teams. Ryan Matyas, center and wing, says the team’s undefeated record at home has a lot do with the charisma and brother-like mentality between his teammates both on and off the field. “We’ve had a really good showing here at home, a really good fan base. We’ve had two close games— Houston and Utah—it came down to the last couple minutes of the game, and it was going to be ‘do or die’ and we were able to pull out a win, [and] show our resilience as a squad and... show the heart of this team,” said Matyas. “And I think that’s what really defines us; the band of brothers we have on this squad, the respect that we have for each other not only as teammates but individuals off the field.” That shared sense of camaraderie—an undying loyalty to your teammates—is a crucial axiom to take into next season from their victory in the season finale, according to back row Drew Gaffney. “We really had that connection before the game, where we’re playing for one another. The guy to your left, the guy to your right— they’re your friends,” said Gaffney. “You’re putting your body out there for them, and they’re doing the same for you.” The San Diego Legion will look to take their momentum and a full crew into next season, beginning January 2019, with a pre-season start date of November 2018.

Fine Tuned JOSH JOSÉ WILLIFORD IS HITTING ALL THE RIGHT NOTES WITH HIS MUSIC AGENCY, ACOUSTIC SPOT TALENT

GO AZTECS! • Josh is from Goleta, CA, but attended college at San Diego State University. A FAMILY AFFAIR • Josh’s wife also works at Acoustic Spot Talent!

ALL GENRES, ALL DAY • Josh claims that all music is his favorite kind of music. He will admit that Latin music and punk rock have a special place in his heart, but his favorite song of all time is "Bottom of The Barrel" by Amos Lee.

WRITTEN BY: EMILY TORRES PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NICK ISABELLA

With musical beginnings traced back to a middle school talent show performance of “Twist and Shout,” Josh José Williford has always had music in his genes. Needless to say, it was only a matter of time before he dove headfirst into the music industry and founded Acoustic Spot Talent, a local live music agency that specializes in placing musicians at corporate events, as well as managing live music programs at upscale hotels, restaurants and resorts. Williford began his career working in medical sales, then quit a six-figure position and took a part-time job bussing tables at Burlap in Del Mar so he could start Acoustic Spot (they would later become one of his largest clients). He booked his first musician at Encinitas hotspot Union, attending every weekly concert for months. From the beginning, he was committed to forming and sustaining personal relationships with both artists and venues. As word began to spread, he slowly started to book gigs at L'Auberge and Duck Dive. Fast-forward seven years and Acoustic Spot Talent now manages over 70 gigs per week—and thousands of artist submissions! Williford now serves as the A&R Director of Solana Beach’s Acoustic Spot Talent, scouting and vetting new artists and venues, as well as managing existing spots and musicians. They have

now hired an agent, David Heffernan, who manages the weekly placements at the local venues. While Williford is still involved with that process, his main focus these days is on high-budget private and corporate events and expanding their business model into other markets. But Williford is committed to going beyond just a typical artist and agent relationship by dedicating himself to getting to know his venue partners and musicians as people. The three key traits he looks for? Attention to detail, courtesy and charisma. "We work with great people, who happen to be amazing musicians," he explained. And it pays off. Most of his artists stick around for the long haul, working with Acoustic Spot Talent for years because of Williford’s own attention to detail, charisma and knowledge of the music industry. “Josh has been with me from beach bar gigs to Disney World and now opening for Jake Owen. Whenever I’m back in town for a few days, he always has perfect gigs to plug me back into the local community,” said Acoustic Spot Talent artist Angie Keilhauer. Williford’s footprint with Acoustic Spot Talent is all over town, including at Cannonball, Herringbone, L’Auberge Del Mar, Duke’s, Rustic Root and Pendry San Diego. We will wait with eager ears to see what’s on deck from Williford and his team.

From the beginning, Williford was committed to forming and sustaining personal relationships with both artists and venues.

Southern Comfort SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY WELCOMES SAN DIEGANS WRITTEN BY: NADYA MIGALKO PHOTOGRAPHED BY: JOSIE GONZALES Acting partners in The Corner Drafthouse, Dan Sobek and Executive Chef Ruben Zamarripa, are bringing us local Southern California flair with a no-nonsense, local cuisine. The menu is full of mouthwatering options and the beer list is on point. To sit down in this restaurant is to relax and feel right at home, see your neighbors and fill your belly with the comfort of refined home cooking. Although Dan has an extensive fine dining background, when it came to creating The Corner Drafthouse, he and his business partner David Creviston wanted to go with something they felt was missing in the neighborhood of Bankers Hill. They identified what was missing and decided to fill that void.

A

Originally from Kansas City, Dan says, “I grew up in the Midwest, and I come from a huge family and everybody cooks. All the family gets together just about every weekend, all the guys are outside barbecuing, and all the women are inside making side dishes and everything else. All the family functions always centered around food.” And his curiosity for cooking thrived in that environment from an early age. He remembers starting to experiment at 5 years old, partly from interest and partly from necessity. He reminisces, “It was a lot of self-discovery, to be honest. Both my parents

worked and I would always joke that I learned to cook because I was hungry. And I kind of just started playing around with some things, trial and error is a great way to learn.” That playing around turned into precision and determination and led to a successful career as a chef. “So, then I went to college and studied hospitality management but then after college, after my undergrad, I decided I really wanted to get serious. I got my first job washing dishes when I was 14, and worked in restaurants through high school and college, every position, front of house and back of house,” he explained. It’s important for a restaurant owner and a chef to understand all the inner workings of a restaurant this way. It was when he attended Johnson & Wales University, in Charlotte, North Carolina, that everything became serious for him and the South a huge influence in his style. He may have put some of that aside during his time in fine dining when he was working at ultra-luxury hotels, including the Dorchester Hotel in London, The Waldorf Astoria in New York City and the Five-Diamond, Five-Star Setai Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York City, but a refined approach to simple food permeated his being and it is now here for us to enjoy.

Local Chefs Show Off Their Take on Seasonal Ingredients

Summer may be winding down, but San Diego’s restaurant scene is just heating up! Culinary experts throughout the county are experimenting not only with the traditional staples of a solid California lunch like avocado and fresh tomatoes, but also with more unusual fare, such as octopus. The resulting dishes are hotter than the Santa Ana winds, and that’s not just because of the chili powder and salsa in the recipes! We challenged six local chefs to demonstrate their prowess in the kitchen by designing a custom dish featuring one of the aforementioned ingredients. Needless to say, the results left a pleasant taste in our mouths.

The spirit-forward blend of Japanese whiskey and amaro helps cut through the bit of spice that the marinade offers.” METRO, LET’S GO • “Anyone who’s dined at Cloak and Petal can tell you that it’s pure sensory overload—just like the food. GOOD COOKIN’, GOOD LOOKIN’ “We poach the octopus in hot water multiple times until it has reached the desired color before slow-cooking it for a nice and tender texture. Once the octopus has been chilled and sliced up, we combine it with large chunks of salted Persian cucumbers and toss them both in the spicy kimchi sauce. Scallions are served on the side.” 100 LOCALE MAGAZINE

FINDING YOUR BALANCE “In terms of texture, the highlight of the meal is the contrast between the soft, tender octopus and the crunchy cucumbers. The flavor is rather strong thanks to the ingredients in the kimchi sauce, which includes garlic, ginger and chili powder. The best way I can describe the taste is fire and ice—cold but spicy at the same time. The sesame oil balances everything out.”

SPICE AND DICE “Start by braising the octopus until tender—about 45 minutes to an hour—and allow it to cool down. Once the octopus is ready, we toss it in our secret chili rub and sear it on the plancha. The taco is assembled on a warm corn tortilla with red onion, spicy aioli, piña salsa and chopped cilantro. • The fried onion and garlic add an amazing texture to the raw bowl that’s not to be missed. Jachura explains that when it comes to poke, “a lot of people are stamping them out now, and they’re not really focused on quality.”

With the recent rise of poke restaurants, one has to ask: what sets Grubby’s apart from the rest? I discovered that the difference is all in the details. Set in The Shoppes at Carlsbad, Grubby’s is a modern space, offering a variety of unique options. With a history of pushing for higher-quality ingredients, owner Justin Jachura and his best-friend-since-sixth-grade, Nhan Lam, have been making a name for themselves by going the extra mile, instead of settling for what everyone else is doing.

major highlight to the menu as well. Of all the available fresh fish and creative rolls, the Aguachile Roll, Executive Chef Dave Warner’s signature creation, has quickly become a standout menu item. “We wanted a nice, fresh roll. Something fresh, something cool, something familiar, something that really over-delivers,” said Warner. Comprised of shrimp, spicy tuna and a variety of produce, the roll puts a Japanese twist on the beloved Mexican dish, aguachile. “We’re so close to Mexico… aguachile is a staple dish down there—shrimp, cilantro, avocado, lime juice— very bright, bold flavors,” explained Chef Warner. While many foodies might be more familiar with ceviche, aguachile is a similar south-of-theborder delight featuring shrimp that’s marinated in lime juice, cilantro, onions and a variety of spices. The citrus works to activate the shellfish in a process called denaturation, in which the shrimp turns firm and less transparent as if it has been cooked.

Home is Where the Heart Is • Executive Chef Dave Warner worked at JRDN for eight years, took a brief hiatus to work at other establishments, and recently returned to the restaurant. “It’s great,” he said. “It’s like coming home every day.”

Slow Cooker • Chef Warner’s favorite dishes are the low and slowcooked ones—like the restaurant’s juicy carnitas plate or rich short ribs offering.

The sizable roll is plated alongside eye-catching purple flower petals and the expected mounds of ginger and wasabi—not to mention the delicate drizzle of vivid green sauce. The presentation of the Aguachile Roll is striking, but its bold and well-balanced flavors speak for itself. Inside a tightly-wrapped cylinder of fluffy rice and soft seaweed, diners will find spicy tuna accompanied by delicate pieces of cucumber and yamagobo (pickled burdock root). “Of all the rolls we offer, its flavor profile is the brightest. The presentation is great; it’s covered in sauce, there are pickled onions on there. If you dropped all our rolls on the table, your eyes might gravitate to the Aguachile first—its colors and presentation are just so vibrant.”

After undergoing renovations for several months, the oceanfront restaurant reopened in March 2018 with a revamped interior and menu that brings a renewed sense of vitality to the popular seaside spot. The restaurant’s newest menu iteration focuses on small, shareable plates, including a bevy of tasty options like Korean-style lamb lollipops and their signature steamed mussels with chorizo, while still offering its trusty, go-to plates, like an indulgent dish of braised short ribs or perfectly-cooked scallops. All of these options are sure to wow diners’ taste buds, and pictures of the plates are bound to incite a liking frenzy on customers’ Instagram feeds, but it’s the restaurant’s new sushi bar that has truly cemented JRDN as the crown jewel of Pacific Beach dining. Upon entering JRDN, you’re welcomed by fresh sunlight, a sophisticated color palette of deep grays, rich blues and creamy whites, and a colorful, iridescent divider. Behind the divider, catch a glimpse of the restaurants’ sushi chefs, hard at work precisely chopping raw fish and delicately inserting freshlypickled vegetables into fluffy rice. The newly-installed sushi bar has become not only a focal point inside the venue but a

On top of the roll, there are the traditional components of a Mexican aguachile dish expertly repurposed to fuse with elements of Japanese cuisine. Avocado, thinly sliced pieces of lemon, pickled onions and soft morsels of shrimp that have been poached and marinated in rice wine vinegar, round out the dish. The vibrant green sauce over the roll is simple yet indulgent, featuring lime juice, cucumber, jalapeno, cilantro and a touch of aioli for added creaminess. The decadent sauce is the work of Head Sushi Chef Javier Enciso, who credits his Chicano upbringing with his skill for pairing together complementary flavors traditional of Mexico, such as spicy jalapeños, herbaceous cilantro and tart lemon. One bite of the Aguachile Roll will send your taste buds into glorious overdrive. The combination of fresh fish, notes of citrus, elements of heat and the finishing taste of pickled onion is truly divine. The roll’s complex flavor profile and opulent presentation seems more reminiscent of a sushi roll inside a highticket restaurant, but JRDN’s casual, beachy vibe, the Aguachile Roll’s reasonable price tag and the symphony of Mexican-inspired flavors anchors you back to the present moment— inside one of San Diego’s most fantastic beachfront eateries. “The Aguachile Roll is quickly becoming a customer favorite,” said Chef Warner. “Our specialty rolls are fun, innovative and kind of approachable for the crowd coming up from the beach.” As warm weather draws even more visitors to the neighborhood, JRDN is sure to have its tables full and its customers leaving satisfied. Visit JRDN, located inside Tower23 Hotel, during your next jaunt to Pacific Beach, and try the Aguachile Roll for yourself.

Located in La Jolla, Downtown San Diego, Encinitas and North Park, The Taco Stand has fresh, flavorful food that will have your mouth watering before your first bite. Chef and General Manager of The Taco Stand North Park, Juan Alvarez, stated, “Every Taco Stand upholds the standard of the slogan ‘Hecho a Mano’ in everything that we do.” No matter what you order, everything will be made by hand with authentic Mexican flavor. With their south-of-the-border feel and delectable tacos, this will be your new go-to place. One of the most popular pairings at The Taco Stand? The Al Pastor Taco and a nice, cold Corona Extra. The Al Pastor (which won second place at Tacotopia twice) is

a seasoned combination of sweet, tart and spicy flavor profiles. This Mexican delicacy features pork marinated in sweet and tart spices, combined with a special mix of vinegars. Then, it is placed on a rotisserie, allowing all of those flavors to meld together in perfect harmony. Finally, it is stuffed into one of their handmade tortillas with cilantro, onions, cilantro sauce and a chargrilled pineapple. The only thing that could make this taco any better is if it is paired with a Corona Extra. With its smooth and refreshing taste, the Corona Extra “has a light crispness that balances out the sweetness of the Al Pastor Taco,” Alvarez said. Top it off with a touch of lime, and the Corona Extra is an absolute must with the Al Pastor Taco. Enough said, head over to The Taco Stand—you can thank us later!

At some point in every woman’s life, she’s stood in the mirror and wondered why she didn’t look a certain way. Be it skin issues or not reaching the unachievable standards set for women, it’s almost impossible not to fall victim to this mindset. She was hopeful that New York, a city filled with top doctors and dermatologists would provide her with what she needed to rid her of the painful acne, only to find the same answers she was given before. “She just felt like no one was helping her get to the root cause and that was really her lowest low,” Danielle said. Around that same time, Danielle, who struggled with her body image, hit her low as well. “I remember being 9 years old and trying to hide diet pills in the cart at Costco when I was shopping with my mom,” she explained. “I had been informed by those around me and 122 LOCALE MAGAZINE

culture and magazines that I didn’t look like I should in a way that manifested over the years to come and I [started to rely] on diets. It was never really about my nutrition or my health; it was really about my waistline.” Before she was about to graduate, Danielle decided to participate in a 21-daylong retreat in Arizona that included a one-week water fast, followed by eating only raw foods for the duration. Once she returned, she was diagnosed with gut issues, pneumonia and a low immune system. “That was really my ‘ah-ha’ moment where I just realized that I was so willing to go to these extremes because of this body I thought I had to have or that I didn’t have,” she said. “I had strayed so far from this idea that food is nourishment and food is medicine.” Although she had been studying medicine, she was never required to take a nutrition class, so she switched paths and changed her focus. Doing so gave Danielle the opportunity to learn about the gut and microbiome, the bacteria in your gut that dictates everything about your health from your hormonal balance and energy levels, to how many calories you absorb from your food. “The way to eat for a healthy gut and microbiome is to get as many fresh plants into your diet every single day and to get a variety of color, which means a variety of nutrients,” Danielle explained. After learning about the importance of the microbiome, she and Whitney devised a meal plan for each other based on the science behind it, which helped form Sakara’s nine pillars of nutrition. After just two weeks, they started to see results. “It was the first time in 12 years that [Whitney’s] skin finally started to clear after trying so many things. And for me, my transition was realizing I spent a lifetime counting calories and carbs and always

worrying about what not to eat, when really the solution was I needed to focus on what I should eat.” After seeing tangible results, Whitney and Danielle shared this newfound information with their friends, who obviously wanted to get in on it. Once they had several clients, they took note of the importance of providing a ready-to-eat product, rather than offering just recipes. “We decided to try and make it a business. We had no idea what we were doing. We were really broke. We threw a dinner party and we sold tickets that raised about $700...that’s really how we got started,” Danielle recalled. Once word got out, Sakara Life took off. “If you create a product that really changes lives, it spreads like wildfire,” Danielle said. And spread it did! Organically reaching celebrities like Lily Aldridge, the company grew from the founders cooking in their kitchen in 2012 to now employing 100 people and delivering across the continental US. “We deliver fresh so nothing is frozen. Everything has to look beautiful, it has to taste really good and it has to deliver results,” she said. In fact, within just three to five days, you can expect to see your skin glowing and a reduction in bloating, and within three weeks you’ll experience a biological and sociological change that will last for weeks to come. The best part? There’s no calorie counting and no guilt—all they ask is that you put your trust into Sakara Life and you will see real results that customers across the nation have experienced. “It’s really a personal journey. For me, the empowering part of this journey is [that] food is supposed to make you feel better, not worse,” Danielle said. “We invite you to get to know your body a little bit better and really learn how to listen.”

Made to Move THIS LOCAL ATHLEISURE BRAND WILL FIT YOUR ACTIVE LIFESTYLE, AND THAT’S NOT A STRETCH WRITTEN BY: MARISA THRASHER PHOTOGRAPHED BY: DAMIEN NOBLE ANDREWS Five years ago, Joe Kudla, a former collegiate athlete who suffered from back pain, had one of those “a-ha” moments. Upon a friend’s suggestion, he started taking yoga classes to ease his back pain. Kudla fell in love with the practice. However, he quickly realized there was a severe lack of athleisure options for men to choose from, and the idea for Vuori Clothing was born. “Men make up 30 percent of yoga practitioners so we thought it would be an easy sell since there weren’t a lot of options in men’s yoga clothes that wasn’t an ‘afterthought’ by established brands. In addition, those brands were competing on price and not quality,” stated Kudla.

F

Fast forward to 2014. Kudla started his own line, Vuori—pronounced Vee-or-ee—to fill the void in the market. The brand originally focused on men’s yoga clothes, but when their initial sales were slower than

anticipated, the team needed to delve deeper into what their customers needed. “To our surprise, we had a slower start. We realized guys weren’t spending time shopping in yoga studios...or for yoga clothes, period,” he added. “We spent time thinking about it and concluded that if we were going to be successful, we needed to focus our efforts on our customer. We had to understand them better. Once we did that, the business really started to grow. We found a recipe that worked.” Vuori launched an e-commerce site a few years ago, and now they have opened the flagship store in Encinitas. His second store opened in June in Manhattan Beach, and there are plans to open a third location in California later this year. Most recently, Vuori has expanded its collection to include women’s items. “We built a brand inspired by the active, coastal lifestyle,” he said. “What keeps me going is the desire to reach more people to send a positive message about leading that healthy and active life.”

9:50 A.M. CATALINA EXPRESS

• Taking a ferry always amps up excitement for a day or overnight trip! It’s like leaving civilization and heading out into the unknown, especially when your destination is a gorgeous island! We enjoyed some cocktails on the ferry and, quite literally, soaked in the sunshine and saltwater breeze. The ride goes by so fast when you’re admiring those amazing blue ocean views. 320 Golden Shore Long Beach, CA 90802 800.613.1212 www.catalinaexpress.com

I’M REMI ISHIZUKA (pronounced 'Ray-Me'), an LA-based fitness and wellness blogger with a passion for healthy living and self-care. I fully believe that healthy habits can create long-lasting change along with the support of a community like Instagram! Recently, my boyfriend and I had the chance to visit the beautiful Catalina Island. I went once in eighth grade and have always wanted to go back. I have fond memories of swimming with Garibaldi fish and relaxing on the sand, but never knew about the other amazing outdoor activities available. It’s the perfect little destination for someone who loves adventure and wants to stay active!

Work it Out • I love to work out in the morning at least five to six times a week before starting my day! The endorphins make me feel powerful and strong, and set the pace for a productive day.

Island Vibes • It is so impressive to think that the Catalina Express has been transporting visitors to and from the island daily since 1981!

12:30 P.M. GOLF GARDENS MINI GOLF

• This super beautiful mini golf course is, according to those in the mini golf world, one of the hardest! Hang out here for an hour and get a round in. And don’t worry, you won’t be too far from the relaxing fun. The course is less than a block from the beach. Ian, my boyfriend, loves golf. He had a blast kicking my butt on the course! We went early in the afternoon and it was the perfect way to work up our appetites. No reservations required! 10 Island Plz Avalon, CA 90704 877.778.8322 www.visitcatalinaisland.com

11 A.M. CATALINA AERIAL ADVENTURE

• We wasted no time and made our way to one of the most exciting activities on the island! I’m all about the adrenaline every once in a while and luckily not too afraid of heights! The Aerial Adventure is a whole course that they let you take at your own pace and own difficulty level. Definitely the best full body workout you can get on the island! You also climb and swing your way through eucalyptus trees. How amazing is that? It’s like your own personal jungle gym, except you’re suspended in the air! I would suggest going first thing in the morning when the air is cool.

It’s the perfect secluded beach getaway where you can sip on a cocktail like their signature Original Buffalo Milk, and choose delicious foods from their wide menu selection! We strolled in and enjoyed some Greek fries with feta cheese and tzatziki sauce, plus a huge bowl of fresh fruit with chili powder! So refreshing and definitely gave me those island vibes. 1 St Catherine Way Avalon, CA 90704 310.510.7410 www.visitcatalinaisland.com

• Everything is different on this side of the island. Remote and lush! Hop in a biofuel Hummer and climb all the way up the hills. Don’t forget to put your camera down, apply some sunscreen and soak in the amazing views at every curve. But definitely get the shot at the top! Be sure to look out for bison, eagles and even foxes! Island Tour Plaza Avalon, CA 90704 877.778.8322 www.visitcatalinaisland.com

ZIP LINE ECO TOUR

You get to learn all about the island’s ecosystem as well. I would probably do this daily if given the chance. Too fun!

• If you enjoyed the Aerial Adventure, try the zip lines as well! If you scream, it’s okay, no one will judge. It’s about two hours long and there are five separate lines, so be prepared! But don’t worry, your heart rate isn’t elevated for the entire two hours. You get to learn all about the island’s ecosystem as well. I would probably do this daily if given the chance. Too fun! 1 St Catherine Way Avalon, CA 90704 877.778.8322 www.visitcatalinaisland.com

5:15 P.M. CASINO TOUR

• I’ll be the first to admit I don’t know a thing about gambling. Good thing there’s not actually any gambling going on in this casino! This tour is about the history of this amazing, massive building. The world’s largest circular ballroom lives inside this casino with a 50foot ceiling! There’s also a theater, promenade and ballroom that once held up to 6,000 dancers. This tour gave us some great insight into everything from the murals to the architecture. I loved learning it all! 1 Casino Way Avalon, CA 90704 877.778.8322 www.visitcatalinaisland.com

7 P.M. BLUEWATER GRILL

• This seafood restaurant has great vibes and amazing food! Their specialties include cioppino, fish and chips, and homemade New England clam chowder. The smells alone made my mouth water. If you’re looking for a party, they offer a wide range of cocktails and even liter jugs!

Picture This • Other fun activities, if you have more time, are to tour Avalon in a golf cart through Catalina Island Golf Cart Rentals, which take about an hour, or to stroll along Via Casino—perfect for Insta snaps!

Native Knowledge • Hike to Catalina Chimes Tower. The hike is along a paved road but has some nice incline to challenge yourself a bit. An insiders tip is that the chimes still chime beginning at 8 a.m., so time your visit right to hear them!

WRITTEN BY: NADINE BLANCO PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: WILLIS ALLEN REAL ESTATE

Nestled high above the San Diego Bay sits a sanctuary that transports you to a secluded Hawaiian paradise without having to get on a plane. From Cabrillo’s tide pools to Humphreys by the bay, Point Loma is full of hidden treasures. But none are more exquisite than the unassuming home perched at the end of Gage Place. Step beyond the gate and escape onto almost an acre of island-inspired tranquility that you wouldn’t know was there otherwise. There’s something mystical about the way this home embraces you and soothes your soul. But this aura, of course, was all by design.

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE The Frazees were grateful to every single person that helped construct their home, so they hosted everyone in the finished product and held a Hawaiian house blessing.

FORGET THE UBER There are plenty of ways to get around town these days, but why waste time driving around the bay to get into the city? Water taxis from Point Loma can take you across the bay for as little as $6.

Nicholas Frazee, of the former paint-manufacturing business, and his wife conceived 3402 Gage Place with the help of commercial architect Alan Campbell in 1988. Regular vacations to Hana, Hawaii inspired Mr. and Mrs. Frazee to build their own private slice of paradise in their home base of San Diego. They say that home is where the heart is, and in this home, compassion radiates through the walls as if the Frazees poured their own souls into its very foundation. Though the reality of it may not have been that dramatic, the Frazees certainly had a huge hand in the home’s scrupulous construction. For Campbell and his team, the 18 months spent constructing this home from the ground up was a labor of love. Organic craftsmanship is prevalent throughout the space. A handcarved Torrey pine welcomes you in the foyer and draws the eye to a hand-painted mural of a serene scene from nature. The rich scent of Spanish cedar wafts down from the exposed beam ceilings that it constitutes. The glossy, hardwood flooring is solid Koa wood sourced directly from the islands that inspired the Frazee’s dream home. Every detail of the home passed under the eyes of Mr. and Mrs. Frazee. The house was built from each end (meeting in the middle) in order to crane in the numerous handselected boulders. The stones of the dining room fireplace were thoughtfully picked, then hand-carved and stacked to perfection. Mrs. Frazee hand-selected the cascading boulders that decorate the backyard. She even personally saw to the meticulous placement of each boulder throughout the property. To know how involved the Frazees were in

building this house adds a meditative aura to what is an already zen oasis. For a property of this stature and prestige, the Frazees managed to build an estate that is grounded and not ostentatious. This is a family home with enough room for every member to have their own space. Six bedrooms are incorporated into this multilevel home, but that’s only the beginning. The very ground floor is where you’ll find a family room and a game room, complete with a bar kitchen, another bathroom and access to the backyard. There’s a room with front-yard access big enough for an in-home gym, as well as a fully-functioning sauna to accompany the black-bottom pool. The main level opens up to a formal dining room that comfortably accommodates at least 14 guests, as well as an office and a butler’s pantry. The kitchen boasts a full-size, built-in Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer faced in exotic woods, a professional-grade range and stove, and a glass-panel pantry that evokes a chic, modern feel. Also on the main level is a casual dining area and living room for more intimate gatherings or relaxing moments. The top level is a 600-square-foot, fullfloor master suite that you may never want to leave. A sitting area opens up to a private balcony that has its own staircase leading down to the backyard. The master bathroom boasts the options of a sunken tub or an indoor/outdoor shower. But the best part about the master suite is the boutique closet, which truthfully, is big enough to be another room. The layout of this home has meandering hallways that are just narrow enough to

maintain an inviting, cozy vibe throughout the entire space. Lest you forget, this is a sprawling estate that takes up almost 40,000 square feet of land. It might be almost too easy to get lost in this estate’s numerous enclaves, but you’ll never forget where you are thanks to the incredible views of the San Diego Bay. The back of this home opens up to Downtown San Diego, Coronado Island and on a particularly clear day, all the way down to Mexico. Nearly every room in the house boasts an east-facing view that will make waking up in the morning your favorite part of the day. What may be the best part of this breathtaking property? It is completely secluded. The estate is laid out similar to a baseball diamond. The house itself is arranged in a C-shape. The spacious backyard encompasses about a third of the property, enclosing the aforementioned pool, two built-in barbecues, a raised dining terrace and a grassy stretch just large enough for pets and kiddos to run around. Recently sold, this home sits in a prime central location; it’s not far from numerous yacht clubs, sightseeing, shopping and everything else that San Diego has to offer. After a busy day of exploring the city, you’ll want nothing more than to kick off your shoes, relax and watch the ongoing activity of the city and bay while tucked away in your quiet, cozy bedroom. After all, this home was built as a sacred space. And as much as you wanted to get away in the first place, you’ll soon come to realize that this is exactly where you need to be.
